Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Halo (2022)

I am wondering if this would be a good example for the Kwan character on Halo's series. However, it seems a complicated example to explain so I was curious if someone could help me with it.

  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Kwan thinks she's the hero of a plucky resistance against an evil Empire. Since her rescue from the Covenant, she's devoted herself to trying to liberate Madrigal from the UNSC's control. However, none of the people want to rebel due to fear of the Covenant and veteran Halo fans know that it is a far bigger danger than local tyrants.

[up]I would say no. Wrong Genre Savvy is more a character thinking they're in a Star Wars like resistance story, only to find out they're actually in a Aliens survival horror story.

That example almost seems like the writer changed their mind halfway through writing it as the second half doesn't follow from the first, i.e. "I think I'm the leader of a glorious resistance, however, nobody wants to rebel".

I found this on the Trivia.Spider Man No Way Home page:

  • Role Reprise: Tons.
    • From Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy:
      • Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe return as Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Norman Osborn / Green Goblin, from all three films. In doing so, they break the record previously held by Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart for the longest run playing a Marvel character in film.
      • Alfred Molina returns as Otto Octavius / Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2. Notably, he confirmed his role in an interview months before the first trailer came out. He too breaks a record, for the longest gap between appearances.
      • Thomas Haden Church returns as Flint Marko / Sandman from Spider-Man 3.
      • J. K. Simmons once again plays J. Jonah Jameson, after doing the same in the post-credits scene in the previous film. This is only technically a role reprise, however, as this iteration of Jameson is unconnected to the one Simmons portrayed in the Raimi films.
    • From The Amazing Spider-Man Series:
    • Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock, marking the first appearance from a character introduced in one of the Netflix Marvel shows (in conjunction with Kingpin on Hawkeye in the same week).
    • Following up on The Stinger from Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock/Venom, marking the first time a character from Sony's Spider-Man Universe appears in a MCU film proper.
    • The European Spanish Dub manages to get back literally all the voice actors from both the Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy AND The Amazing Spider-Man Seriesnote , starting with Roger Pera as Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, a.k.a. Peter 2, and Iván Labanda as Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, a.k.a. Peter 3. Funnily enough, this includes actors who had also voiced other characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe beforenote . Pera himself voiced Bruce Banner / Hulk when the character was played by Edward Norton, but more noteworthy would be Juan Antonio Bernal, AKA the Spaniard voice for Tony Stark / Iron Man, who voices Max Dillon / Electro. The cake though is taken by Salvador Vidal as Norman Osborn / Green Goblin, who also voiced Hank Pym and General Ross, being the only voice actor in the franchise thus far to have voiced three different characters (although, fortunately, never in the same movie).
    • With the exception of those mentioned in The Other Darrin, the Brazilian dub keeps the voice actors the characters above had in their previous appearances, even those who already voice other characters in the MCU (who don't appear in this movie, except for the one mentioned in Acting for Two above), like Márcio Simões (Sandman and Nick Fury), Jorge Lucas (Norman and James Rhodes) and Eduardo Borgeth (Lizard and Vision).
    • Likewise, while Peter 2's original voice didn't come back, the Latin Spanish dub brought back the voice actors for all the villains, as well as Javier Olguín as Peter 3, and Humberto Solórzano as J. Jonah Jameson.
    • In the Japanese dub, Manabu Ino and Tomoaki Maeno reprise their respective roles as Peter-Two and Peter-Three.
    • Every single European French voice actor from the Spider-Man Trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man Series reprised their role, with the addition of Eddie Brock/Venom from Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

Since the Role Reprise trope requires a wait time of at least five years and actors continuing to reprise their roles in an installment of an ongoing franchise doesn't count, which entries can be kept and which entries can be cut?

[up]The actors from Raimi's Spiderman and from the Amazing Spiderman movies definitely count. Those franchises were effectively done with years ago (2007 for Maguire et al and 2014 for Garfield et al).

Charlie Cox/Daredevil (and Vincent D'Onofrio/Kingpin) is a little iffier, that "went off the air" in 2018, but I'd still count it unless we want to be super pedantic. The Netflix Marvel stuff was also effectively shut down, so his cameo would be a reprise (I doubt he's coming back).

Tom Hardy/Venom ... I would say does not count, I believe he's still in the MCU family going forward, so his role hasn't "ended" the way the others have.

I can't speak for the dub VA folk ... it reads like so much padding and entry pimping to me, but I'm probably in a minority on that.

I don't think dub VA's should count for Role Reprise but I don't think there's a current stipulation that they don't.

From More Popular Replacement (Arrow tree):

So I thought this trope was about characters. Such as say this one character comes in to replace a divisive character and becomes more popular then the old one or an actor takes over a role from another and si seen as the definitive actor for the character. Can just new show runner is liked more especially since this seems like just an excuse to complain about the old ones.

hello, had a question about Celebrity Power

does the trope include historical celebrities (e.g. Elvis Presley) or do celebrity examples have to be from modern times? Also do they HAVE to be alive as opposed to people filed under Historical Badass Upgrade (and Historical Domain Superperson)?

Is this an example of Rule of Symbolism?

Near the end of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Jobu Tupaki and Evelyn square off for the final time. Whereas Jobu's fighting stance has her fists clenched in an aggressive stance, showing how she's ready to fight her mother to achieve her goal of finally killing herself, Evelyn's stance looks as though she's holding out her arms for a hug, showing that she doesn't truly want to fight her daughter but instead plans to convince her to that life is worth living.

All is not lost. Not yet.

[up][up]I believe any and all celebrites (including deceased ones like Elvis or Liberace) do count. I'm not quite sure what you mean by your second question, are you asking do they have to be alive in the work? If so, then I would say .... yes?

[up]Ehhh, I believe Rule of Symbolism is for when said symbol is shoved into the narrative simply to be symbolic. While I'm sure the fighting stances are supposed to represent ideas, they are also fighting stances used to kick ass, so not an example.

[up] yes, I was asking if a celebrity has to be alive and with superpowers in a work for it to count as a Celebrity Power

Both Historical Badass Upgrade and Historical Domain Superperson pages mentioned that an example of Celebrity Power is where a person is a celebrity who is alive in order to count, but I don't think the page for Celebrity Power wasn't very clear on if the example can be a living or dead celebrity

[up][up]My brain is fuzzing out now, so apologies if I'm not getting it. When you ask does a celebrity have to be alive, do you mean alive in real life right now in real life (say Tom Hanks fighting zombies)? Or just in the work (as in Abraham Lincoln fighting zombies)?

This from YMMV.Lego Star Wars is being debated on ATT:

  • Better Than Canon: Many fans find The Skywalker Saga's adaption of the Sequel Trilogy to have improvements over the source material due to their changes. These include nixing the relationship between Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and Rey, giving Finn more involvement in the plot, changing it so that Luke never ignites his lightsaber over a sleeping Ben and adding some Ho Yay between Finn and Poe. Admiral Ackbar also gets one last Fandom Nod in before his death, often panned for how quickly it happens, by trying to say his memetic "It's a trap!" line again before being sucked out the window. Even the final lines of the trilogy end up getting tweaked, removing the common critique of "Rey who?" being unintentionally hilarious.

Better Than Canon is being contested arguing it only applies to fan works, but it's being questioned if it can apply as it's official but not canon.

My impression was it shouldn't as official means it has canonical status even if alternate continuity and we have Author's Saving Throw and Fix Fic to cover the improvements. Thoughts?

But ... LEGO Star Wars isn't canon. It's not from the original creators, and the events aren't going to be referenced by canon works in the future.

My two cents, it's a valid example.

I found this in Scenery Censor where I think it's ZCE in disguise. Here's the example:

  • Lifeforce presents a remarkably inconsistent use of this trope. The main antagonist of the movie, an otherworldly female vampire only known as Space Girl, is played by an incredibly hot Mathilda May and remains totally naked like 90% of her screen time. The best example of this is when Space Girl is facing three hapless security guards during her Full-Frontal Assault on the Space Research Center. While her breasts are unobstructed, a railing and then the head of one of the guards blocks her groin. The very next scene has her in full display as she zaps them out of her way, following by an escape sequence her breasts, bush and butt are in full view of everyone.
Also, not to mention that at the end of this example, the troper described the details of nearly every naked body parts that was shown onscreen. To me, that sounds a bit perverted and creepy. Do you think details like this allowed in here?

[up]I would say none of that should be kept, it's the kind of thing that is typed one-handed it's so specific with the details.

In fact, I'm not even sure it's an example at all, considering that there is full frontal nudity in the film. I'd just axe the entire thing as it seems nothing but a flimsy excuse to showcase someone's "appreciation" for the actress.
