Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

I downvoted WMG since people have said it hasn't really proven to have any issues yet. (Got massively ninja'd because I forgot to refresh the page in hours)

Parents as People has some real life examples... Which would it fall under: Narrative, Characterization, and Plot Tropes, or Morality Tropes?

Can I add Parents as People to the crowner? It doesn't seem possible in real life since it needs a narrative, and every parent ever is pretty much this.

Keet went through TRS last year to narrow the description. It still needs lots of cleanup (I added a link to the thread to my signature to bring awareness), but Keet.Real Life is the worst of the misuse. It's a mess of gushing and shoehorning that includes Justin Bieber, Quentin Tarantino, and Doug Walker. Considering the new definition specifies that it's an Audience Surrogate for female viewers, it should probably be NRLEP as a characterization trope.

Keet cleanup

It's so amusing to me how often Doug Walker gets shoehorned onto real life pages. I think it's the same people (person?) entry pimping him years ago.

[up]x5 [tup] I think this trope is about how the parents are presented, so it's narrative dependent. Add it to the crowner.

I think it's also safe to add Tsurime Eyes/Tareme Eyes and possibly Cartoonish Companions as well.

[up] Not to be a Soapbox Sadie, but one of the entries on Cartoonish Companions seems rather ableist to people with Down's Syndrome. I second adding all of them to the crowner.

And that one was already removed. Thanks!

Discussion a few pages ago decided to cut the Real Life sections for Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!, Hollywood Tourette's, "L" Is for "Dyslexia", and Super OCD as stereotypes; can they go directly to NRLEP due to consensus to cut already having been implemented?

Also, consensus determined that Year Inside, Hour Outside is not impossible in real life, so it should be removed. I have an example involving cosmological voids that I would add.

I think Keet should be NRLEP, but the rationale is wrong. It looks more like gossip similar to Adorkable.

[up] I'm starting to wonder if we should have a section in Aluminum Christmas Trees for tropes. Tropes that people think are made up by fiction but are actually Truth in Television. Year Outside, Hour Inside would be one of those. I thought that it was Reality Is Unrealistic, but it seems to just be about believing the fictional version of a trope is real.

I'm still looking for consensus to add Parents as People to the crowner.

[up] Wrong trope; that's Aluminum Christmas Trees. Of course; I can immediately name Hellfire as well (the closest real life analog is chlorine trifluoride). There is, however, speculation that the trope is really YMMV; see its entry at Sandbox.Tropes Needing TRS.

As for Parents as People, I've already !voted in support of your proposal; are you waiting for at least one more comment?

I just removed the Real Life section for Out with a Bang and Agony of the Feet for violating NRLEP. I looked at Yandere, but I don't think it has the same problem as before it was cut. (There's no gossip.)

So Beautiful, It's a Curse, however, is a different story. I suspect that it's too common in real life, and it's prone to gossip. The first few examples violate Examples Are Not General.

We need to stop adding stuff to the current crowner. It is getting way to long. Finish out what is already there, then make a new one.

Latino Is Brown, Do Not Touch the Funnel Cloud, Worst News Judgment Ever, and the ones about cops can be called. It's likely that many others are long overdue to be called.

I forgot to mention adding Tsurime Eyes, Tareme Eyes, and Cartoonish Companions to the crowner.

EDIT: Hospital Hottie's description claims NRLEP, but it is not listed on NRLEP and has a Real Life section.

I would like to nominate A Tankard of Moose Urine for the crowner. It's essentially being used as "complain about alcoholic drinks you don't like", not to mention it's so common that it makes up 40% of the page's word count.

Will anyone call the old entries in the list?

EDIT: Calling Do Not Touch the Funnel Cloud and Latino Is Brown in favor of cutting.

[up][up]That trope already came up, and after it came up, I commented that Bad to the Last Drop is basically a non-alcoholic A Tankard of Moose Urine in terms of examples.

[up] Then we can add both to the next crowner, since that page also has an absurdly long section that amounts to "coffee exists" and "use this space to complain about coffee brands you don't like".

It was definitely added without consensus by ~Katsuhagi. If you want to propose something, that's fine, but you should post in the thread and get some agreement instead of just adding it to the crowner right away. And when you do add something to the crowner, your reasoning should be more definitive than "I'm thinking this should be on here".

Some of the examples on Overly Narrow Superlative don't fit the trope or are Zero-Context Examples. Based on the examples that do fit, I suspect that it's too common in real life. It's been placed on Sandbox. No Real Life Crowner Candidates.

I'm back!

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
