The Paragon Guard

  • Heroes “R” Us: The Paragon Guard is a group of superheroes that are known to recruit and train other heroes to continue the legacy when they're gone.

    Arronax

Arronax / Chesa Agbayani

The daughter of a Karagan queen and the protector of the whales, her official title is Princess Arronax of Nereiri. When blending into society outside of her homeland, she sometimes uses her civilian alias Chesa Agbayani. The character has seen changes in depiction over the decades, including briefly becoming a daughter of the Greek god Poseidon in a 70s retcon that was later reverted.
  • The Ace: Arronax was a prodigy from birth (which is one of the reasons why Crisan resents her). She is noted to be a fast learner, a powerful fighter with strength greater than the already mighty Karagan strength, a swift and enduring swimmer who is no slower on land, an incredible beauty, and an intelligent queen. Trained from youth to utilize her full potential, it’s no wonder why Arronax is one of Wonder Comics’ most prominent superheroines.
  • Action Girl: Being one of Wonder Comics’ premier heroines, Arronax is known to be a strong warrior who can more than hold her own in a fight.
  • Action Girlfriend: Was this to Clifford “Cliff” Mallory, a normal human man who lived a normal if not somewhat dissatisfying life before he met Arronax. Though Cliff is no stranger to brawls, more often than not he was no match in pure power or magic to the adversaries Arronax regularly fought, and she took care of much of the action stuff while he found his usefulness elsewhere.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: During the Bronze Age, Arronax’s origin was briefly revamped to have her be the half-human demigod daughter of Poseidon instead. However, this change was reverted back to her being an alien princess, though the retcon would be referenced multiple times afterward.
  • Alien Fair Folk: She belongs to the underwater alien race of the Karagatao, who were formerly of the planet Karaga before they moved to Earth following Karaga’s demise. The Karagatao are often equated with merfolk, if not outright serving as the base for the myth. Cliff Mallory, her first love interest, thought that Arronax was a mermaid as well when he met her and called her such.
  • Alien Princess: Is introduced as the princess of Nereira, one of the many nations of Karagatao. Eventually gets an upgrade to alien queen though and has stayed that way ever since in the comics.
  • All-Loving Hero: Learns to become one despite her militaristic warrior upbringing. Her years being a hero to both her own people as well as to others had taught her a lot in the ways and value of mercy and compassion. Though she can seem hard at first, Arronax is ultimately fueled by the love she has for others and her belief in the inherent value of life.
  • Aloof Big Sister: Was this to Crisan during their childhood, to the point where Arronax didn’t even think much when Crisan was banished from the palace and sent out to survive on his own. This is something that Arronax regrets deeply as she grew.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Officially stands at a height of 6’0” and, depending on the artist, is often drawn to have her warrior princess background accentuated through a more visible musculature. She is also noted to be quite beautiful by both human and Nereiran standards.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Many of her interactions with other female characters have often come with subtext that were rarely missed, especially when it came to rival princess Caimiva. It didn’t help either that Arronax was modeled after her creator, Maj Lindqvist’s real life girlfriend, Mary Grace Ocampo. However her bisexuality was never confirmed until the 2010s, and since then Arronax has been openly bisexual.
  • Ancestral Weapon: The Trident of Nereira, Arronax’s weapon of choice, is a weapon that goes back to her earliest ancestors.
  • Animal Lover: Has a love and appreciation for sea animals, and grows to have the same for land and sky animals as well. She is often gentle toward them and is respectful when she has to eat them as well.
  • Anti-Magic: Is often given an inherent or trained resistance to magic.
  • Apparently Human Merfolk: Seems this way at first, as on the surface Arronax often walks around not looking much different from a human. However, like all Karagans, her true form is much, much scalier, with colorful fins as well.
  • Badass Boast: Being a long-lived queen and superhero with many accomplishments under her belt, Arronax likes to give these to her enemies to remind them just exactly who they’re messing with.
  • Badass in Distress: Although Arronax is very capable, she is also no stranger to falling into peril and even needing other people to save her. Her troubles range from being imprisoned within her own palace, being hunted down by her own subjects, getting her teeth knocked in by Poseidon, being in the mouth of a huge sea monster, or being mind-controlled by the sea witch Scylla.
  • Battle Couple: Is this with many of her love interests such as Cliff and Liemos when they fight side-by-side together, especially if said love interest is a superhero in their own right.
  • The Beastmaster: Her telepathy is versatile, and though she usually uses this to command and summon sea animals to her side, Arronax has also been able to do this with other types of creatures.
  • Big Sister Bully: Although Arronax was more so aloof toward Crisan more often than not, she had her moments where she was unnecessarily unkind to him, which affected his perception of her for years to come. Arronax regrets these moments.
  • Blood Knight: Although Arronax has lost any taste for unnecessary killing and bloodshed, she still enjoys a good fight here and there, still reveling in the thrill of one. She likes to seek strong opponents to hone her skills against.
  • Brother-Sister Team: When she and Crisan put their differences aside, they find that they do in fact work well as a team.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Arronax has been depowered on more than one occasion. Each time, however, she has proven that she is still very capable, having had various martial arts and weapons training over the course of her life.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to her younger brother Crisan’s Cain (however she has often fulfilled the other role to Crisan as well, considering the way she used to treat him in childhood).
  • Captain Fisherman: The underwater-themed hero of the Paragon Guard, being from an underwater-dwelling alien race with incredible swimming, strength, and storm powers to boot. Anyone who only ever underestimates her as the “fish woman” ends up learning their lesson very quickly.
  • Catch and Return: Most people who try to attack her with a projectile weapon often find themselves on the receiving end of it once she flings it right back at them with twice as much force. She has even done this with bullets.
  • Celebrity Superhero: Is well-known and beloved as both a superhero and queen. Is not above showing up to events or taking a few seconds to sign autographs for adoring fans.
  • The Champion: Of Nereira in general, often coming to represent them in gatherings of other nations, whether in words or fists. Despite the many flaws she sees in her nation and her work to remove those flaws, she still deeply loves and cares for her people and culture and commits to her role as queen.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Responsibility has been drilled into her head for as long as she could remember. As such, Arronax takes it upon herself a lot to save anyone who is in danger, whether it comes to an individual or an entire nation, leaving less time for herself.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Has the classic super enhanced strength, durability, and speed. She also has control over liquid and storms, telepathy, precognition, regeneration, can travel through dimensions, absorb essences with her trident, among other things.
  • Cultured Badass: Being queen of an entire underwater civilization, Arronax has a lot of knowledge of etiquette, music, literature, language, general arts, etc. of many cultures.
  • Cunning Linguist: Arronax knows a wide variety of languages and picks up on them quickly as well.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Sahaika was a cruel woman, and not even Arronax, her prodigal daughter, was fully spared from her cruelty either. Not to mention the fact that Arronax was actively participating in bloody and horrific war battles ever since she was 12 years old thanks to Sahaika’s militarism.
  • Depending on the Artist: Arronax is sometimes drawn with varying levels of musculature depending on who’s drawing her. Her true Karagan form also ranges from ‘basically a scaly human’ to ‘true alien fish monster.’
  • De-Powered: The end of her original comics run saw Arronax depowered to be a normal human woman living with Cliff. However, when she was eventually brought back with a revamped backstory, her powers returned. Didn’t stop her from being de-powered more times over the course of her adventures afterward though.
  • [[Determinator Determinator]]: Arronax is never one to give up easily. Even when she’s been beaten down and seemingly broken, Arronax would get up and continue to fight with all the strength of a raging tsunami.
  • [[Did You Just Punch Out Cthulu? Did You Just Punch Out Cthulu?]]: Not only does she often fight gods and eldritch abominations, but she also often comes out on top of these fights as well.
  • Dodge the Bullet: When Arronax isn’t just taking the bullet and letting it bounce off of her, she has also shown that she is swift enough to be able to dodge loads of them as well.
  • Dude Magnet: Many men over the comics seem to be attracted to Arronax, ranging from the average background character with an Arronax fan shirt to some of her fellow Nereirans or superheroes. However, Arronax has only ever gotten with a select few of her admirers
  • Effortless Amazonian Lift: Has done this to both Cliff and Liemos multiple times, though has done it with Cliff more frequently. She’d just pick him up and sling him over her shoulder and Cliff would love it every time. She is also often able to effortlessly lift other people, such as her own teammates.
  • Elemental Motif: Water. Arronax not only has the power to manipulate water, but like the element itself, she can be both soothing and kind as well as ferocious and raging–and also in that, like the flow of water, Arronax can change, which she does coming from a brutal warrior princess to a truly all-loving heroine.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In her first comic appearance where she saves Cliff from a shipwreck despite the fact that she did not know him and the fact that he was a human, a species that she and her people at this point looked down upon. And this was done with no expectation nor hope for a reward.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Many women in the comics have stated or hinted at some sort of attraction to Arronax.
  • Experienced Protagonist: She was trained in a variety of skills since her youth, was involved in active warfare by the time she was 12, had prior adventures and experience as an independent superhero as well as on a team with the Jackal Patrol. By the time the Paragon Guard forms, Arronax has no insignificant amount of experience.
  • Fantastic Racism: Nereirans were not known to be particularly kind and accepting of other species, races, or cultures, and this racism and xenophobia only got more violent after Sahaika took the throne, despite Sahaika being half-human herself. This reflected in Arronax’s earliest adventures where she still looked down on humans and other Karagan nations according to her upbringing (again, despite having human blood as well), however she learns, grows out of this, and comes to defend the diversity of life, with her promoting this acceptance after she ousted Sahaika and took over the throne.
  • Fish People: The Karagatao are a scaly underwater-dwelling alien race. Arronax’s true form has brilliant blue scales and dark golden eyes.
  • Fish out of Water: Quite literally. Arronax sometimes has difficulty keeping up on rapidly changing trends of the modern age, not to mention that oftentimes she feels out of place among other humans as an alien fish queen.
  • Flash Step: Arronax is very quick, even quick enough to leave afterimages in her wake. And if you think she’s fast in dense water, just wait until you see her when she’s out on land in the air.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The mature, calm and responsible sibling to Crisan, who is more brash, outwardly emotional, and hotheaded.
  • Friend to All Children: Arronax has a soft spot for children. She has zero tolerance for anyone who dares try to harm one.
  • Genius Bruiser: Arronax has unnatural strength even by Karagan standards and has been raised in a warrior culture. That being said, she has the brains to back up the brawn.
  • Good Is Not Soft: On average, while Arronax is very much a force for good in the world, she is also still very much the warrior she was raised to be. Not to mention that at times she can come across as a hardened person.
  • Good Princess, Evil Queen: Was the good princess to her mother Sahaika’s evil queen. However, Arronax would eventually become the kind, heroic queen that her mother never was.
  • Heal It with Water: One subset of her powers is that Arronax can heal wounds with water.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has multiple over the course of her life, from political backstabbings to tough family matters to the deaths of people close to her. One moment is after Corion decimates a large number of Nereirans in a successful attempt to get his hands on Neirium, which Arronax takes hard.
  • The High Queen: The powerful and noble queen of Nereira, however this is also at times challenged with Arronax’s own flaws and struggles coming to the front especially when it’s shown that not all her subjects love her. Still, at her best, Arronax is a determined benevolent queen making up for her mother’s tyrannical rule, building bridges between her people and the other worlds around them.
  • Hope Bringer: As one of the most iconic superheroines of the Wonder Universe, Arronax is a symbol of hope for many. To the Karagatao, after decades of nonstop warfare with each other, Arronax was the one to bring enough hope to bring a new era of peace.
  • I Am X, Son Of Y: Sometimes introduces herself as “Arronax, daughter of Nereira” or some variation of it. Initially introduced herself as “Arronax, daughter of Queen Sahaika” before she understood the kind of person her mother was and promptly stopped doing so.
  • Immune to Bullets: Her scales are tough and strong to the point where normal bullets cannot penetrate them. If she feels like showing off, then Arronax would also stand there and let the bullets hit and bounce right off of her until her attackers run all out.
  • Interspecies Friendship: With many of her teammates on the Paragon Guard, with fellow alien Kite being a notable one.
  • Invincible Hero: Arronax is strong, with scales tough enough to withstand any blow, and a will that is just as powerful as well, not to mention the fact that she has no obvious physical weakness. Although Arronax is far from being a surefire victor all the time, with her getting her ass kicked in fights more often than not even with her might, she is among one of the Wonder Universe’s strongest and most famous heroes for a reason.
  • Jumped at the Call: Although Arronax has her moments of doubt, when she is given responsibility she almost always readily accepts it. Arronax is not one to turn down a mission when people need her, and she knows she is a queen and has been prepared for it since birth. She rarely, if ever, complains that she ‘just wants to be normal.’
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Arronax can and will fight in whatever she’s wearing if she has to. She can be attending a high social party in the best-looking and elegant, but most impractical dress she has, and she’d still find a way to kick ass.
  • Lady of War: Is royalty who can kick butt any day, should she be challenged. Even during a fight, she keeps an air of grace and nobility around herself.
  • Made of Indestructium: Even beings of incredible power such as Corion cannot break the Trident of Nereira, which can withstand any attack that is short of pure cosmic power.
  • Mama Bear: Is fiercely protective of children, especially her surrogate children.
  • Not So Above It All: As royalty, Arronax is expected to be mature at all times, never to stoop to childish games. However, Arronax has often shown that she really isn’t above it all, often jumping in on games along with her friends or holding petty grudges.
  • Parental Substitute: Is this to Marituva and Reyali, who were orphaned at different stages in their lives.
  • Princess Protagonist: Was introduced as one in her first comics.
  • Prongs of Poseidon: A trident is Arronax’s primary weapon of choice. The Trident of Nereira is near indestructible, forged from Neirium, and gives her fine control over weather as well.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Arronax is the queen of the seas, and with that comes the fact that Arronax can beat down anyone who challenges her.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Still looks fairly young for a human woman, however Arronax is actually over a century old and still has many years to go before she starts slowing down.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Arronax tries her best to wield her authority responsibly. Though she is a queen of Nereira first, Arronax has also extended her compassion to other people of different nations. A far cry from the bloodthirsty, iron-fisted ruler that her mother had been.
  • Rebellious Princess: Her time being a hero on the surface world has taught her the value of compassion and mercy, something that her mother has tried to stomp out of Nereiran culture since she took over the throne. Despite having been raised to be a violent, hard warrior princess, Arronax eventually comes to defy what is expected of her and become the kind royal that her people needed.
  • Redheads Are Ravishing: Has brilliant red hair, in both her human and Karagan forms. Her hair color stands out to many people and is often considered a factor into her attractiveness, especially to her fellow Nereirans.
  • Rightful Queen Returns: Pulls this a few times over the course of her queenship, after she’d get ousted from her throne and someone else takes over. She always comes back, though.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Arronax is a queen of an entire kingdom, and as such she commits to her responsibilities to them, whether it’s in diplomatic matters where she’ll have to use her words, or actively fighting for them on the battlefield.
  • Secret Identity: Had one as Chesa Agbayani in her earliest comics, however within the modern era Arronax has had little need for a true secret identity. Any human alias she takes are more so just temporary measures should she ever feel the need (or desire) for it rather than her actually living double lives.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Can communicate with other animals, notably those of the sea.
  • Warrior Princess: Comes from a society that highly values a warrior’s strength and courage. This reflects even in her earliest comics appearances and affects her values even farther down the line, with her being very capable of taking care of herself and fighting for others.

    Red Kite

Kite

Harpy alien and the last of his species, helped found the Paragon Guard
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Kite is named after a Red Kite, and his appearance resembles one as well. He also can fly and make bird noises.
  • Heroes Fight Barehanded: Normally, Kite fights without any handheld weapon. He uses his powers, sure, but is no stranger to kicking and punching.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the fifth Paragon Guard movie, Kite dies at the hands of the villain, Neighptyr, while distracting him in order to rescue his teammates and allow them time to defeat him.
  • Last of His Kind: Kite's entire planet was destroyed, leaving him the only living Harpy Alien left.
  • Light-Hearted Rematch: In his first appearance, Kite and Arronax start out fighting one another. They are only stopped when Kite realizes she is the person he's supposed to warn about Beverly. Later, Kite and Arronax have several moments, sometimes shown, most times not, where they have a rematch, this time without trying to kill each other.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Kite only is ever seen wearing his signature red sweater and scarf. Sometimes, such as when he's trying to hide his alien appearance, his outfit will have an added ushanka, mask, and pants, though he is hardly seen without his red sweater.
  • Recruit the Muggles: Several times, Amy and Jack, Kite's friends, have come to his aid in battles or other missions. For example, in Kite's debut comic, Amy and Jack were shown helping him fight off Beverly before he was captured.
  • Secret Public Identity: Kite does not have an alias. His teammates simply call him by his name.
  • Strong as They Need to Be: His power levels have been known to be adjusted for storyline or drama's sake.
  • Superheroes Stay Single: After the death of his life-partner, Condor, and also extinction of his species, Kite was never seen in a romantic relationship with anyone again. The current explanation is that he just never got over the death of Condor.
  • Superhero Origin: While his powers didn't come from anything special; he was born with them, much like the rest of his species, the destruction of his planet is what caused him to join the Paragon Guard.
