Our protagonist (Cover illustrated by the author themselves)
When you woke up to a cat monster from hell that tried to burn you alive as soon as you wake up, learn that you’re in a world where Disney movie villains are turned and twisted into pretty boys, that you have no magic, can’t go home anywhere, and with an appearance that is definitely not yours in short order... well, even weirder things might as well happen.
- black or white summary

black or white is a Twisted Wonderland fanfiction and fan-novelization by torinokomachi/shuusigure telling the story of Shiina Yuu and her adventures in Twisted Wonderland.

black or white is the first installment of the "growing in color" verse and it's related universe with the following installments:

Not to be confused with the Manga of the same name or of the 2014 film.

Tropes pertaining "black or white":

  • Acceptable Breaks from Canon: Due to the game still being on-going, the story had plot points that will make it diverge from the main game in general and some world-building expansion in the story that is revealed in other adaptations didn't get fully adapted here, such as how Japanese and English are a common tongue in Twisted Wonderland in this story, but the light novel reveals that the school had an area wide translation spell for everyone.
  • Actually Pretty Funny:
    • Yuu doesn't get to fully see it, but Ruggie's reaction to her hosing Leona to escape and distract him is mad and unrestrained cackling. Trey also had a similar reaction to hearing that Yuu hosed Leona like she's punishing a misbehaving cat.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Shiina Yuu is an example of this due to being more willing to take matters into her own hands and defend herself when prompted.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • Mrs. Rosehearts pasts is expanded upon due to the additional factor of ghosts and that of Riddle's deceased aunt to explain how she eventually became the Abusive Parent that she was to Riddle. Namely, Emilia Rosehearts had been on the receiving end of Successful Sibling Syndrome for as long as she remembered since childhood in hopes of being able to gain her parents' attention and love and grew to resent her sister for it. When Irene later died, she did get what she wanted but it ultimately left her feeling hollow as they still compare her to her dead sister, with her actions and control over Riddle's life all fueled from the Sibling Rivalry she was pit on by her parents.
    • The dorms are expanded on to have specific quirks that mimic the land of whom of the Great Seven is the dorm inspired from, such as the Heartslabyul dorm mimicking the atmosphere and rules of Wonderland back in the Queen of Hearts' prime, the quirk of the dorm atmosphere allowed ghosts of all kinds to be visible 24/7 and can be functionally human in that area, for an example.
  • Adaptational Jerkass:
    • Downplayed Trope, but Crowley is much more dismissive of Yuu than he would have with the canonical Yuu due to Shiina Yuu's independence. However, Unreliable Narrator is in play so while a lot of Crowley's actions are in line to what he has done in canon, Crowley is seen as a bigger jerk in Yuu's head than he actually was.
  • Adaptational Origin Connection:
    • In the main game itself, Mrs. Rosehearts wasn't known to be twisted from anyone from Disney Animated Canon. In this story, she is mentioned to be inspired and twisted from the Red Queen from the 2010 live action of Alice in Wonderland for this story due to Adaptation Expansion.
  • Adults Are Useless:
    • Crowley is a deconstruction in this story as his lack of involvement in Yuu's own matters and well-being end up souring her opinion of him due to Yuu having already been on the receiving end of it in her past and lost complete trust in him over time. It comes to a boil when Book 6 rolls by where Yuu snapped and cut him off for trying to act on being a responsible guardian after leaving her be for as long as he did.
    • The other Night Raven College staff averts this for Yuu, addressing her mistrust of them before it's too late like Crowley did. This is why Yuu accepts and is grateful for being under Crewel's guardianship by Book 6 as Crewel had already gained her trust by that point.
  • Alice Allusion:
    • Invoked with the Unbirthday parties as guests from outside of Heartslabyul are referred to as an "Alice" and had a dress code to match along with a male and female version of the replica signature outfit.
  • All-Accessible Magic: Lilia taught Yuu of an ancient method of conjuring magic via borrowing magic from the world into a medium such as writing up runes on objects and/or using a customized magical pen to write the rune anywhere with the pen as the medium conduit. While the method had been considered legitimate and had basis in ancient history, many magicians in Twisted Wonderland derided Yuu for being a "fake" due to the magicians feeling that the method is an attack on their pride and break the status quo of Twisted Wonderland that a magicless individual are beneath those born with magic. Additionally, this method has been considered obsolete and impractical in the modern day of Twisted Wonderland that the Fae are the only known practitioners of this method due to their natural affinity to nature, and Yuu inherently being magicless is the only reason why she could safely use this method to conjure magic.
  • All There in the Script: After the prologue of the game is fully adapted in black or white, the author posts snippets of future events not covered in the main story yet in the "Of things to come" tag and also in the blog's fanfiction tag. Story trivia's and other miscellaneous tidbits of the story are also in the author's tumblr blog.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Yuu starts out feeling disoriented and not knowing much of herself or of the world, but she had the luck of having Amnesiac Resonance allowing her to adapt accordingly and survive.
  • Amnesiac Resonance: Yuu has muscle memory and emotional remembrance to her advantage and it later allowed Yuu to fully remember her past before being brought to Twisted Wonderland.
  • Bifauxnen: Yuu has a boyish appearance and Tomboyish Voice that makes it easier for her to hide her biological gender. She otherwise doesn't actually reveal it unless someone asked politely, like Kalim and Lilia did. Yuu also being a Bokukko according to one of the author's trivia post hides it further. While she is later comfortable enough to speak the truth, she still sticks to boyish manners of dressing and clothing due to being comfortable in it.
  • Bland-Name Product: A handful of these are mentioned in the story:
    • The Patrick Johnson books is one for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series.
    • Twisted Wonderland's Apple equivalent is called iBerry. There's also Encord for the Discord chat client equivalent.
  • Cain and Abel:
    • Emilia Rosehearts is the Cain to Irene Rosehearts' Abel. Even after Irene's death, the gap of Irene's successes and virtue is too much that it left Emilia resentful for so long.
  • Cerebus Retcon:
    • In this story's adaptation of the Octavinelle chapter, Grim accepted Azul's deal not because he was lazy, but because he is feeling inadequacy at the pace of Yuu's own growth and feared that he Can't Catch Up with her and be left behind.
  • Connected All Along: Twisted Wonderland is revealed to be the very world that Yuu's grandmother had once been spirited away to in the past.
  • Cursed with Awesome: The author reveals that the Shiina family's supernatural powers are a result of Yuu's grandmother having been Trapped in Another World as punishment of her maternal family's greed and offense against a god and when she returned, said aspect becomes something that had a chance to be inherited by her descendants in a 50/50 chance as a side effect and reminder. However, due to living in a time where people slowly lose their belief in the supernatural, the younger generation who inherited a variation of this aspect see's it as a curse.
  • Crossover: Has two official crossover stories that serve as a What If? scenario:
  • Dark and Troubled Past: A few of the Original Characters, along with Yuu herself can count:
    • Shiina Yuu was born with a strong sixth sense but due to living in an era where most people no longer believe in the supernatural, she was shunned and was labelled as a Creepy Child by her peers and even her teachers, her only ally in her elementary school was the school nurse who'd become her honorary uncle, but one incident left her completely scarred and hurt that it destroyed her initial idealism in people and the world. Just when she recovered from the ordeal, her grandmother passed away from old age and her relationship with her own family slowly starts to strain due to having to decide between the living and the dead, which convinced Yuu to easily give up in the hope of returning back to her original world.
    • Irene was Riddle's deceased aunt and during the time when she was still alive, she and her sister are pit against each other by their parents in a twisted manner of Sibling Rivalry to help "motivate" each other to be better which left Emilia completely bitter and resentful of her. When she later died from overworking herself, she haunts after her sister before she saw her sister's controlling tendencies to her nephew first hand and is left lingering in the living world and haunt after her nephew out of guilt for being the reason why Riddle grew up the way he did.
    • Kasper Latifi seems like he has a relatively well-cared life as a spoiled child of a rich family, but it's later revealed that the family is undergoing a Succession Crisis behind closed doors and Kasper had a Traumatic Superpower Awakening of his unique magic when one of his relatives back-stabbed him for the succession of the family. The incident and the thought that someone he loved as family betrayed him traumatized him so much that he had said memory repressed for years.
    • Mel Ansell was born Melvin Diamandis, who was raised by his parents to be the perfect heir until one day, Melvin ran away from home in secret due to growing fed up with his parents control of his decisions and life and found a purpose in music. But when his parents are against it and wants him to be the perfect heir of the family, he devised a plan to run away for good and get himself disowned. He is later adopted by a visiting couple who took him in and he rechristened himself as Mel Ansell in the present.
  • Deconstruction Fic: The story served as one to some aspects of the canonical Yuu's situation and some common tropes and plot threads found in most fan-novelizations of Twisted Wonderland with a good dose of realistic consequences applied to them:
    • In game, the canonical prefect is content to stay as the Non-Action Guy for most parts. In black or white, however, Yuu has to actually find a way to defend herself by taking Lilia’s offer to teach her how to wield the world’s mana because her near death against an overblotted Riddle made her realize that there is little to no stopping others from using magic on her even with the rules in place due to Night Raven College student body being majorly Jerkasses and she would get easily killed with magic due to being inherently magicless and defenseless against it.
    • Unlike several fan-novelizations where the Yuu and/or Ramshackle Prefect of the story suddenly gained the ability to use magic, Yuu actually had to learn magic from scratch using the oldest known method possible due to being inherently magicless and it’s not something that her sixth sense can even cover. As such, Yuu remains magicless and is considered a magician by a technicality that her method isn't illegal and had some credence that it used to be used by magicians in the ancient past.
    • Unlike the game, Yuu gradually and completely lost trust in Crowley's authority over time due to Crowley reminding her of her previously apathetic teachers who were content to throw her under the bus because they couldn't bother to act as a proper teacher for a Creepy Child who can see the supernatural.
    • Most fan-novelizations often make the Ramshackle Prefect be on the receiving end of a harem from the main casts. In black or white, Yuu's awareness of her own weaknesses as a magicless individual made her far more guarded and hesitate to trust easily that it resulted in Yuu having a strictly platonic relationship with most of the named cast due to them noticing Yuu's guarded stance, and those that actually do like her romantically can be counted by one hand.
  • Did You Just Have Tea With Cthulhu: Yuu casually talking with the ghosts nets this reaction among Yuu's new friends.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Child: A variant of a guardian and his ward occurred with Crowley and Yuu. Crowley treated Yuu much like the canonical Yuu and had assumed her to be a regular person who ultimately wanted to return to her original world. Crowley never bothered to actually see her as a person with her own issues nor did he attempt to address the mistrust she had on him. It all comes to a blow come a future snippet in Book 6, in the aptly named "you lose at zero trust" future snippet where when Crowley decided to be a proper guardian, Yuu had blown him off for finally acting too late and Crowley doing so shortly after Shiro's true identity was revealed didn't sit well for her and it comes off as Crowley being a kiss-ass, with Crowley eventually giving his guardianship of her to Crewel. The author described Yuu and Crowley's relationship in black or white to be that of "a neglectful parent who tried to rectify their neglect too late for the child to want their parent back".
  • Dramatic Irony: Several examples occur throughout some points of the story:
    • When Yuu see's flashes of Riddle's past, Riddle talks of how he had met an invisible fairy godmother and how he kept her presence a secret. The Side B story reveals that Che'Nya not only knew who the "fairy godmother" was, the whole ploy was actually Che'Nya's Idea to give Irene a chance to communicate with her nephew without fully compromising her presence.
    • One of the future chapter teasers has Ace asking Yuu if she had anyone that she wanted to return home to, with Yuu admitting that she'd like to return to see her grandmother. Shortly after this discussion, Yuu remembers that her grandmother's already dead for 8 years, so Yuu essentially has no one that she wants to see and return home for.
    • Crowley is initially dismissive of Yuu and didn't really believe in her relevance to the world of Twisted Wonderland at large due to being a human from another world. The eventual Connected All Along reveal ends up proving him wrong. By the time Crowley tried to salvage his relationship with Yuu as guardian and ward, she is far too important for him to be able to use and make a potential Unwitting Pawn out of her and she has no reason to trust him at all then.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: A G-rated example. There was a moment where Yuu guesses some bits of her first year friends character and bits of their home life based on how they take their coffee and drinks. For an example, Deuce preferred his sweet and note that he is unused to the actual coffee flavor and more used to instant ones due to potential struggles of living with a single parent, and Kasper demands multiple additions to his own drink to correlate with his own background as a Spoiled Brat from a rich family.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Beyond the main casts, some of the Original Characters also had their own issues that caused them to clash, with Yuu dealing with her own trauma from her past among some examples.
  • Expy:
    • The author mentions in their tumblr that Yuu in black or white was partially inspired by Natsume Takashi from Natsume Yuujinchou, albeit snarkier and not as nice as the character that she was inspired from.
    • The author also mentions that Yuu's grandmother, Kaname, was inspired by Natsume's grandmother, Reiko in return, though Kaname is far friendlier and much more beloved by the supernatural than how the supernatural perceive Reiko in Natsume Yuujinchou.
  • Fantastically Indifferent: Due to Yuu's own experience with the supernatural, Yuu doesn't bat an eye at seeing the beastfolk or fae beyond her initial confusion at Grim and Lilia due to the disorientation of being brought to another world.
  • First-Person Smartass: With the story written in first-person Point of View, Yuu often has snappy and snarking remarks to the things going on around her but she rarely voiced out most of them unless prompted.
  • Grandparent Favoritism: Yuu is very close and fond of her own grandmother. She was hit the hardest with her grandmother's death due to the death being Yuu's first experience in learning mortality.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: A result of Yuu trying to be more proactive in her survival in Night Raven College results in her being seen as this to the Night Raven College population due to seeing Yuu's method of magic as something that is against the status quo of Twisted Wonderland that magicians are more valued than those without, and Yuu learning and using such method is challenging such a status quo. While Yuu does eventually garner the respect of the student body, she's under no illusion that it will last due to her cynicism.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: How Floyd eventually views Yuu as he is more intrigued by the blood lust repressed underneath her calm facade and wants to see it leak out. Jade is also implied to have a similar opinion as Floyd in one snippet and wants to see Yuu causing carnage.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • The chandelier in the dinner hall still gets broken. Instead of it breaking because Deuce tried to stop Grim, the chandelier broke because of Deuce trying to stop Ace, who was planning to ditch from doing the dorm’s chore.
    • Yuu, Ace, Deuce and Grim still meet Chen’ya after escaping from the unsuccessful Unbirthday Party, though the circumstances that they meet in are slightly different.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Yuu received the canonical "Shrimpy/Koebi-chan" nickname from Floyd at first, but this later changed to "Sharky/Same-chan" when Floyd noticed the underlying Blood Knight side of Yuu. Leona likewise switches his nickname of her from "Herbivore" to "Omnivore" due to sensing the repressed anger and Blood Knight in Yuu on top of recognizing that she isn't as soft as he expected.
    • Mel gave those he is close to and friends with nicknames such as Grimmy for Grim.
  • I See Dead People: Yuu has the ability to see the supernatural which also followed after her in Twisted Wonderland.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Yuu, while ultimately heroic, her heroism is tempered by her cynicism and is snarkier than she looks.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: The story having tidbits and vignettes of future events not covered yet in the AO3 upload leads to this effect to some of the plot twists and reveals of the story, some of which are also applied in the Persona 5 crossover AU What If? story black bird. Namely, Yuu's grandmother was spirited away to Twisted Wonderland in the past and the fact that she's spirited away at all becomes the source to how Yuu's family and some of her relatives had a supernatural ability or have a sixth sense, and the death of Yuu's grandmother is a huge turning point that affected how she eventually grew up before she was brought to Twisted Wonderland.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • Yuu exploits this for Ace and Deuce's benefit during the duel against Riddle by pointing out that there's nothing in the description that says that the duel can be an endurance match and points out Riddle potentially having a lower stamina than a regular teen boy because of what they learned of his past from Irene. While Riddle eventually found out about the plan and stopped it, he still commends them.
    • This is essentially why Yuu is allowed to use her brand of magic in Night Raven College by the staff when they learn of her use of it, as her method to conjuring and using magic is technically not illegal and had basis in the history of Twisted Wonderland, and is considered legitimate.
  • Named by Adaptation:
    • In the game itself, neither of Riddle's parents are given a name. The story gave them the name Emilia and Joshua Rosehearts respectively.
    • Kalim's half-siblings weren't mentioned by names. In this story, two of his siblings are given the name Nadir and Asha.
    • Some of the ghosts and talking paintings are given names. The Ramshackle residing ghosts (Sans Lando) are named Louie, Sans and James, a messenger ghost in the academy is named Archie, and one of the talking paintings is named Francis, among some examples.
  • O.C. Stand-in: Shiina Yuu is this to the canonical Yuu out of necessity due to the canonical Yuu being a Protagonist Without a Past.
  • Original Character: Outside of Yuu being an O.C. Stand-in, there are other characters, both minor and major that expanded on the universe such as Lyle Martin, Kasper Latifi and Mel Ansell, among some of them.
  • Papa Wolf: Lilia grew to quickly be one for Yuu as he easily chastised Crowley for not thinking through about Yuu's other needs and necessities shortly after and later accompanied her for shopping for her necessities.
  • Parents as People:
    • Yuu with her parents. Though this applied to her whole family than just her parents and is played for nuance. While they are understanding and supportive, they are ultimately still people. Yuu's own mother and the oldest of her two little brothers once hurt her in a Moment of Weakness due to the cruelty of gossip and rumors from those outside the family, with Seiran being too young to understand the complexity of Yuu's school life, and her father struggling to fully understand her. Yuu's relatives and their friends were willing to try and help, but they lived all the way out in Tokyo and still had their own lives to attend to, which left Yuu having complex feelings about them and convinced that she doesn't have a place in her own home and family anymore.
  • Point of Divergence: The story's protagonist is if Shiina Yuu, who is an O.C. Stand-in to the canonical Yuu, is assertive of her stance and actions and proactive in trying to find a way to survive in another world and defend herself, which resulted in these changes:
    • Lilia is the one who filled in about the exposition of Night Raven College to Yuu instead of Crowley in virtue of Yuu bumping into Lilia who was on his way to the entrance ceremony, instead of hiding in the library.
    • Yuu enlisting the nearest student she can find to deal with the fires caused by Grim has those three students eventually seek her out and befriend her. Said action ended up catching attention to herself with Kalim in particular looking for her.
    • Due to Yuu going shopping with Lilia for clothes and other necessities, Crowley is the one to deal with Grim instead when he invaded Ramshackle.
    • Yuu stopping the fight before it officially started means that Ace, Grim and Yuu herself avoided the punishment of having to clean 100 windows while the circumstances that led to the chandelier breaking is something else.
    • Due to seeing the mirage of a white haired girl wandering around Heartslabyul grounds, said girl helps them out together with Lando to escape from Riddle’s wrath at the first Unbirthday Party in the Heartslabyul chapter and eventually reveal Riddle’s past to them instead of hearing them from Chen’ya. This also led to Deuce and Grim avoiding the “Off with Your Head” treatment.
    • Lilia offering to tutor Yuu in the Twisted Wonderland equivalent of Formalcraft led to Yuu eventually being considered a magician. Showing off everything that she learned under Lilia’s tutelage led to all the teachers recognizing Yuu’s potential and made a request to separate Yuu and Grim from the 2-in-1 student program so Yuu won’t be hampered by Grim’s lack of progress. Unfortunately, this led to the Cerebus Retcon of why Grim accepted Azul’s deal.
  • "Rashomon"-Style: The combination of the story following mainly through Yuu's point of view in combination of the side stories and Unreliable Narrator results in the events being viewed differently according to the characters.
  • Rejected Apology: Riddle's apology to Yuu for nearly killing her in his overblot was rejected with Yuu reasoning that she isn't the one that Riddle should be apologizing to, and that if he does wish to apologize to her, she wants him to apologize because he wants to, not because he is obligated to.
  • The Reveal:
    • Twisted Wonderland is the very world that Yuu's grandmother was once spirited away to and Shiro, Yuu's new familiar, was formerly her grandmother's.
    • Shiro is not only a former familiar of Yuu's grandmother during the time she is still in Twisted Wonderland, he is also one of the Twisted Wonderland equivalent of The Four Gods as the White Tiger.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Discussed Trope between Yuu and Lando, who surmised that Riddle tried to use his Unique Magic on Grim during the failed unbirthday party that led to the duel but failed due to Lando and Irene's timely rescue. Lando surmised that since Yuu, who had been the main offender who called out to Riddle outside of Ace and Deuce, is magicless, Riddle tried to seal off Grim by proxy instead.
  • Shared Universe:
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Summary has one to Homestuck.
BE PUNTED INTO A PLAYER CHARACTER
You are now Shiina Yuu, and you are heavily disoriented
    • Yuu's advice for Riddle to get up on his feet to try and make amends refers to Fullmetal Alchemist, where Ed had said similar words to Rose.
    • Yuu's "Alice" attire was inspired by what A3's Masumi wore in "Alex in Wonderland".
    • Irene, the mirage that showed up in the Heartslabyul mazes is Riddle's deceased aunt who was inspired by the White Queen from the Alice in Wonderland 2010 live action. This also extends to Mrs. Rosehearts herself being the Red Queen against Irene's White Queen with their relationship reflecting the characters they are inspired from.
    • Yuu compares the overblotted form of Riddle to the half-nightmare forms of the Sino Alice cast.
    • Yuu's method of magic that Lilia is teaching her is inspired from Fate/Prototype.
  • Spiritual Antithesis: With Counting Sheep. Both stories had a similar concept of an Amnesiac Hero Yuu who are both Trapped in Another World. But the two stories took on a different tone and direction to how the Yuu of the respective stories react to their new circumstances.
    • black or white serves as a Deconstruction Fic towards the canonical Yuu's situation and gears towards a shounen-esque take of the usual Twisted Wonderland novelizations in part due to black or white Yuu's more cynical and pragmatic approach to her circumstances, while Counting Sheep reconstructs aspects of the canonical Yuu's situation due to Backstory Horror combined into Counting Sheep Yuu's friendliness.
    • Counting Sheep Yuu is optimistic and her airheadedness garnered worry from the cast who eventually get pulled to her due to warming up to her optimism and eventually form a polyamory with her, while black or white' Yuu is a snarky cynical Jerk With A Heartof Gold who is far more guarded due to awareness of her own situation and doesn't trust easily, so she had a strictly platonic relationship with a majority of the cast due to them recognizing how guarded she was, while those that do like her romantically can be counted by one hand.
    • Counting Sheep Yuu remains a magicless individual and her story focuses on a Heal the Cutie arc due to hints of her Dark and Troubled Past, with bouts of turmoil due to canon events occurring and how Yuu eventually helps the students recover with her kindness. black or white Yuu chose to take matters to her hands and eventually found a way to safely borrow magic from the world under Lilia's tutelage, with her story being about Yuu adapting to her new circumstances but refuse to lay down and stay weak and magicless, leading to a more action-ized story where Yuu plays a more proactive role to the events happening to her than to stay in the sidelines.
  • Too Much Alike: Grim and Kasper both come at odds with each other due to being near similar. Yuu even noted privately about that similarity.
I think Kasper’s from a rich family with how often he mentions his family surname and how he’s from a merchant family. So he’s probably used to having things done for him, like the Spoiled Brat from a rich family that he is.
Grim is just a bratty kid in the form of a cat in comparison.
Maybe that’s why they both don’t get along on the get go.
    They’re both brats.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Due to the story majorly following Yuu's point of view, several aspects and moments come off as this as it follows Yuu's own personal thoughts and what she gathered so far with the information she got.
  • Wake-Up Call: Overblot Riddle is this for Yuu, which prompted her to realize her own limitations as a magicless individual and take the stand to defend herself. The fight and the near fatal consequence that it costs on her is why Yuu readily accepted Lilia's offer to teach her Twisted Wonderland's brand of old magic by borrowing magic from the world.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: While Yuu initially decided to not return home out of pragmatism and genre-awareness that there's no way that she can go back home easily, Yuu's eventual recovery of her memories have her eventually decide to not go back to her original world at all due to feeling that she no longer had a place in her original world anymore.
  • You Lose at Zero Trust: One future snippet in the author's tumblr blog is literally named as such centering how Crowley had lost Yuu's complete trust by the point of the snippet's setting and to showcase how the story will further diverge from the canonical events of the game from that point.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • Kalim's brotherly instinct and care for Yuu comes from Kalim seeing flashes of his half-siblings in her and see's her as a second chance that he couldn't have with his own siblings.
    • Yuu found herself being reminded of one of her little brothers, Seiran, in Ace, due to the two having near similar personalities.
    • On the negative side, Crowley reminded Yuu of her previously apathetic teachers who were content to throw her under the bus and Crowley not bothering to address the issue only made Yuu distrust him.
