Nest Freemark

John Ross

  • Bad Future: Wanders through it every time he dreams.
  • Boom Stick: His staff.
  • But Now I Must Go: At the end of every successful mission.
  • Deuteragonist: Second most important viewpoint character after Nest.
  • Handicapped Badass: Gained his limp and his badassery at the same time.
  • Heroic BSoD: For most of A Knight Of The Word after a particularly bad mission leaves him unable to deal with the world.

Two Bears/O'olish Amaneh

The demon

  • Big Bad: Of Running with the Demon, responsible for all that happens in it.
  • Bastard In Sheep's Clothing: He fakes Affably Evil really well, but underneath it, he's a monster to the core.
  • The Corrupter: Seems to get off on this.
  • Creepy Blue Eyes: Pale and washed out.
  • The Heavy: Of Running with the Demon. He causes all the story's problems.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He's Nest's dad.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Part and parcel of his Corrupter persona.
  • No Name Given: Only known as "the demon".
  • The Nondescript: Is described as having an utterly bland appearance, save for the pale blue eyes. His powers help him out here too: when he's in the room with you, you're always sure you know him from somewhere and his name is just on the tip of your tongue; when he leaves people typically forget he was ever there at all.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Like all demons, this is his goal in the long run.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Nest's grandmother, Evelyn spurned him. His response? Wait for years, seduce her emotionally fragile daughter Catelyn, get her pregnant and then reveal the truth about himself, driving Catelyn to suicide.
  • Smug Snake: He's quite effective, but his own viciousness, and underestimation of Nest and her grandmother royally screw him over.
  • The Sociopath: Has no real emotions, and no connections to anyone else.
  • The Soulless: Lost it to the Void long, long ago.

Stefanie Winslow

  • Becoming the Mask: Explicitly averted; in fact, she regularly kills people not only to sate her demonic hunger but also to avoid becoming too human.
  • Big Bad: Of A Knight of the Word, trying to lead John down the same path that Nest's father tried to lead her.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Pretends to be a supportive girlfriend. Actually a monster.
  • The Corrupter: Tries hard to do it to John.
  • Glamour Failure: Although she is otherwise good at shapeshifting, the scrapes and bruises that she suffers while in hellhound form hunting Nest cannot be concealed even after she shifts back into human form.
  • Hellhound: Her preferred form for hunting and fighting.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Feeds on the homeless.
  • Love Interest: To John Ross.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Uses nightmares and frightening dreams to try and force John into murdering an innocent man, an action from which he will not recover, and which would have triggered his fall to The Void.
  • Morphic Resonance: For all of her shapeshifting abilities, her wounds carry over from shape to shape; see Glamour Failure above.
  • Shapeshifter: A changeling, who can change into any form it wishes.
  • The Soulless: All demons have sold their souls to the Void.
  • The Vamp: To John, trying to seduce him into evil.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Can change shape at will.
  • Yandere: She is willing to kill anyone—human, faerie or demon—who interferes with her plans for John Ross.

Findo Gask

  • Big Bad: Of Angel Fire East and Genesis, hunting Ross and Nest in the first, and overseeing the end of the world in the latter.
  • The Chessmaster: Gask plots out his schemes in great detail before launching them, and accounts for most possibilities.
  • Demon Lords And Arch Devils: Or as close as The Word and the Void's demons get to that title. He's the oldest and most powerful demon around and the others defer to him accordingly.
  • The Dreaded: Especially by Genesis. And for good reason. He's the one who finally took out John Ross.
  • Elderly Immortal: Gask is one of the oldest demons, and unlike many of his colleagues, looks the part.
  • Evil Old Folks: Appears as an elderly man.
  • Evil Sorcerer: His role in Genesis. The text actually describes him as looking like an evil Gandalf.
  • For the Evulz: Kills and destroys out of sheer love of chaos rather than hatred for humanity.
  • Hero Killer: Gask specializes in killing powerful servants of the Word. His killing of several Knights of the Word has ensured his infamy among his enemies.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Manipulates Larry Spence into helping him "investigate" Ross by playing on his obsession with Nest, and has Penny lure Bennett back into using drugs.
  • Meaningful Name: Possibly. "Findo Gask" is one of the oldest settlements in Scotland. Gask doesn't remember much of his past, but it's probable he has unintentionally named himself after the place where he was born.
  • The Older Immortal: Gask is the oldest demon alive, and the others respect him for his experience if nothing else. Penny Dreadful refers to him as "Grampa Gask", much to his annoyance.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Like all the demons he wants the end of the world.
  • Sinister Minister: The disguise he adopts in Angel Fire East.
  • The Soulless: All demons have sold their souls.
  • The Stoic: Little of what Gask is feeling ever shows on his face.

The Void

The Word

  • All-Powerful Bystander: The Word and the Void never directly confront one another.
  • Big Good: All the Knights of the Word and other good aligned characters ultimately serve The Word.
