"I would never have thought to have cast the five of us as a season, and I could have not have projected or forecasted the alchemy that we had."
Guy Montgomery during the Five Friends + Friends Watch Party

David Correos

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tnz_david_correos.png
"I feel so hollow inside right now!"
A New Zealand comedian, actor and writer. He is best known for winning the Billy T Award in 2016, and for being nominated for the Fred Award in 2021. He has also appeared on Three current affairs show The Project, comedy panel show 7 Days, and YouTube sketch comedy channel Viva La Dirt League.
  • All for Nothing: He has an unfortunate tendency of putting a lot of energy into his tasks only for everything to come crashing down around him.
    • When tasked with squirting lotion the longest distance on a tarp, he spent an incredibly long time putting together a slide, only to end up spitting some lotion onto the tarp and having that count as his one and only attempt.
    • When tasked with becoming a hometown hero, he flew Paul out to Christchurch for a tour around his favourite hang-out spots and introduced Paul to his family. However, Paul looks bored in every photo and Jeremy ranks this attempt dead last for how pedestrian it was.
    • For the task to see who could build the highest tower of onions, he effectively cut several into slices and was able to pile them up one onion at a time at a relatively respectable height, putting him in contention to win. However, with less than 10 seconds left in the task, he tries to lay one last slice onto the tower, unbalancing it to the point that it falls over once he lets go of it. What makes matters worse is that, because he cut them up, all that was left of his presentation was half of an onion, putting him in last place.
Jeremy: ...that whole speech was a sob story, you ended up in the bath, crying in the onions, and the saddest part about it was the bit that was left was a half-onion!
      Paul: Yes.
Matt: (pointing at David with a gleeful smile) You're shitter than me!
    • For the final studio task, he put a lot of thought into balancing the ingredients in the salad he was making...only to be told he needed to disassemble the salad and return the ingredients to their original positions.
  • Apologetic Attacker: After his, Guy, and Laura's diss track against Matt and Urzila was played during "Eat Your Asses", he immediately apologized for the harshness of the lyrics, said he'd tried to get the task cut from the season, and presented Matt and Urzila with meat platters as peace offerings.
  • Ascended Extra: David was retained as a guinea pig to trial test different live tasks in Series 1 before he was asked to participate in Series 2.
  • Berserk Button: David is usually a cheerful guy but, as Matt has proven, he doesn't like cheaters and would go into a comical rage over such instances.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: David established himself as a good-natured bumbler prone to epic screw ups in tasks. But during the diss track task in "Eat Your Asses" he started spitting out vicious lyrics that left Guy and Laura stunned and Laura even had to pull him back and calm him down once they finished their rap.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Paul sarcastically introduces one clip of David by mentioning his "calm and rational approach".
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • He was particularly having a bad day for "Heat Stroke" due to unexpected complications during the VTs.
      • Float the Brussel Sprout: He had failed to properly secure the helium balloons to the brussels sprout which then predictably floated towards the ceiling. So David waste time climbing onto the scaffolding and mildly injuring himself to retrieve it.
      • Transform the Lab in Darkness: A miscommunication with the lighting guy left him no other choice but to strip naked in hopes of changing the vibe of the room. Unfortunately, Jeremy decided his attempt was only worth 1 point despite protest and worsened by the fact Laura, who won the task and was supportive of David's plight, chose not to swap her points with David's when given the chance.
      • Squirt Sunscreen the Furthest: Spent a really long time (around 46 minutes) making a hydro slide out of pool noodles and mixing the lotion with his mouth. As if it weren't tragic enough, David accidentally spat the lotion on the tarp, counting it as his one and only attempt.
    • He's also singled out for a trick task in the Grand Final and ends up spending two hours untying shoelaces.
  • The Cameo: He appears in Series 3 Episode 7, during the spot the difference task.
  • Cathartic Scream: There are very few tasks that don't feature David screaming to let off some steam. The most prominent case is probably during the eating the grape task from "Completing the Set" in which he screams in his clip and while reacting to his clip.
  • Consistent Clothing Style: Like his pre-recorded task outfit, David wears a multitude of brightly-coloured Hawaiian shirts during all the studio segments.
  • Determinator: David risked genuine injury climbing into the rafters of the kitchen to retrive his helium balloons for the brussel sprouts task.
    • He performed any of his tasks while suffering from two herniated disks in his spine which he needed surgery to fix following the shoot.
  • Did Not Think This Through:
    • He's had a number of mishaps with helium balloons
      • In one instance, he neglected to fill his balloons entirely, causing them to drop straight to the ground.
      • In another, he filled the balloons entirely but neglect to properly secure them, leading to them floating out of reach.
    • For the prize task in "Completing the Set", he brought in $50 that he intended to give to the episode's winner in exchange for $0.50. Guy immediately saw the flaw in his logic and pointed out that the episode's winner would receive the cash outright without needing to pay him the $0.50.
  • Epic Fail: He consistently comes in last on timed tasks, often taking at least thirty minutes longer than his next-closest competitor. In fact, longest task attempts on TMNZ all belong to him.
Paul: Sixteen minutes and six seconds was the time to beat...it took David nineteen minutes to spot the grape!
  • Genre Savvy: According to Sam Smith — who co-writes the tasks with Paul — David was googling "how to be a good Taskmaster contestant" in an attempt to gain an edge on tasks.
  • Handicapped Badass: Not physically, but he had two herniated disks which he needed surgery to fix following the shoot. It didn't slow him down at all.
  • Hidden Depths: For those unfamiliar with his background, David shares that he used to be a weightlifter in "Unbung".note
  • Naked People Are Funny: He's stripped off on multiple occasions.
    • His first and final prize task submissions featured photos of him wearing nothing but skimpy briefs.
    • A genuine on-set mishap during the transform-the-lab task led to him panicking and stripping down to his birthday suit in 12 seconds in an attempt to change the vibe of the room.
    • In another lab task, he stripped off all his clothing to reveal he'd tied a necktie around his nether regions like a loincloth.
  • Nervous Wreck: Played for Laughs. He is very prone to screaming and hysterics when things aren’t going his way, which is frequent.
  • Shout-Out: His task outfit was inspired by Master Roshi of Dragon Ball Z albeit with boots rather than jandalsnote  as he needed to move around a lot.
  • Suddenly Shouting: He has a habit of suddenly bursting out in loud shouts (occasionally accompanied by angry pounding on the floor) when frustrated.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: As the grape-eating task from "Completing the Set" was being played, David was dramatically cringing before his attempt was shown because of how bad he knew it was going to be.
Guy: I feel like it would be rude not to notice that David's had his head in his hands the entire time this conversation's been happening.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: He innocently threw out Guy's attempt at floating a brussels sprout the longest, thinking it was just garbage. Guy didn't mind too much as he was comfortably in second place for that task.

Guy Montgomery

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tnz_guy_montgomery.png
"Am I going to have to use my fucking wits for this? I hate that."
Guy: It's just a very cool T-Shirt with a picture of Paul as a 14 year old boy
Paul: I would like to say, I still have no idea how he got that photo.

A New Zealand comedian, actor and writer. He is best known for being a host of the podcast The Worst Idea of All Time, and previously being a host on U LATE for TVNZ U. He is also does a yearly podcast on American Thanksgiving called Til Death Do Us Blart. He was a writer on the Three satirical news show Jono and Ben. In 2014, he was the winner of the Billy T Award for up-and-coming New Zealand comedians.

  • Did Not Think This Through: He admits during the studio recording of "Feel my bean" that his prize submission of a voucher entitling the bearer a delivery of $100 in cold, hard cash was poorly thought out as he placed no usage limitations on it.note  To his annoyance, episode winner Urzila decided to cash in this voucher during the NZ's national lockdown.
  • The Gadfly: He wears t-shirts with blown-up childhood photos of Paul on the front during both the pre-recorded and studio segments to throw Paul off balance. What particularly unnerves Paul is the fact that they're private family photos, meaning someone close to him is in league with Guy.
    • Guy is also the contestant most likely to tear down his contestants attempts in the studio.
  • Impossibly Tacky Clothing: In addition to his t-shirt with a prepubescent fourteen-year-old Paul, the rest of his outfit for his pre-recorded tasks is just as weird with red shorts, a light blue bucket hat and matching socks.
  • Running Gag: In every episode of his series, he would unveil a different T-shirt with an Embarrassing Old Photo of Paul Williams underneath his shirt or jumper. This is done in-between the first task or ad break and without much fanfare until Paul comments on it (and by the looks of "At Your Service", Paul stops pointing it out altogether).
  • The Unreveal: Throughout the season, Guy wears t-shirts with photos of Paul on the front. Though Paul mentions that they're all private photos that Guy only could have gotten with the help of a family member, it's never revealed who provided access.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: When tasked with finding a can of beans hidden within 144 cans of tomatoes, he opts to use the claw end of a hammer to get to the cans' contents faster.

Laura Daniel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tnz_laura_daniel.png
"I went to drama school...it cost me 60,000 dollars!"
Jeremy: Laura, that's the second time you've tried to Lady and the Tramp someone in this series
Laura: Sorry, Tried to? Successfully Lady and the Tramp someone.

A New Zealand comedian, actress, writer and current affairs reporter. She previously appeared on the Three sketch comedy show Funny Girls, satirical news show Jono and Ben, and is currently a reporter on the TVNZ 1 current affairs television show Seven Sharp. She is also one half of the comedy pop music duo Two Hearts with fellow comedian, fiancé (at the time), and Taskmaster New Zealand Creative Producer, Joseph Moore.

  • Censored for Comedy: During the bean tin task in "Feel My Bean", her cursing was bleeped out purely for comedy as the episode aired with all the other cursing uncensored.
Laura: How many swear words can I say on this show?
Paul: I think that's up to you.
Laura: OK, well *bleep* you, you little *bleep*-ing little *bleep*!
  • Consistent Clothing Style: Her task and studio outfits all favor bold colours and strong, feminine styles.
  • The Gadfly: In "Unbung" she reveals she went on dates with the partners of all the men in the cast, trotting them out one at a time to mess with their heads. Especially David.
Laura: You find that amusing, David?
    David: What the fuck?
Laura: I also took your girl!
    David: What the f—?!?!
  • Lady Drunk: Heavily downplayed, but she admitted to having drunk half a bottle of wine during the Hopscotch task, and drank seven shots of scotch during it despite being, in her own words, "properly fucked" already.
  • The Mole: During the team task where she and her teammates had to fill Paul's car with balloons, Laura had to stealthily sabotage her team's efforts because of a previous trick task. Needless to say Guy and David were not exactly pleased with the revelation.
  • Pink Is Feminine: She wears an all-pink outfit in the pre-recorded tasks as well as some of her studio outfits.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When complimenting the Taskmaster for winning the prize task in "At Your Service"
Laura: And I can't wait to receive the headnote  at the end...Pfft [Covers her mouth upon suddenly realising what she said while the audience erupts in laughter]...and the statue.
  • The Unintelligible: When she advocated for David in the transform-the-lab task, Jeremy suggested she swap her five points for David's one, causing her to babble incoherently while trying to backtrack her comments.
  • Verbal Backspace: When Jeremy offers to give her five points to David in the lab transformation task, she immediately walks back her comments in favour of David's attempt to keep her standing in the task rankings.

Matt Heath

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tnz_matt_heath.png
"I'm not a big fan of thinking too much."
An actor, producer, radio host, sports commentator, columnist and musician. He was guitarist and singer for the 2000s band Deja Voodoo, and runs the motion graphics company Vinewood Animation Studios. He also hosts the Radio Hauraki Matt and Jerry Breakfast Show, with the Taskmaster, Jeremy Wells.
  • Butt-Monkey: Picked on by the Taskmaster and the rest of the cast over his perceived ineptitude in tasks.
Guy: Things have gotten pretty dire when you're taking tips from Matt Heath.
  • Call-Back: In "Completing the Set", he wore Angella's jumpsuit from Season 1 to protect himself from getting dirty in the Taskmaster Pond.
  • The Cameo: He unintentionally made an appearance in Season 4's "Truffle Pig" when a clip of his and Jeremy's radio show was played for Melanie's attempt at winning something by pretending to be a caller in order to win tickets to Evil Dead Rise.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: For all the jokes about Matt's apparent incompetence at tasks and lack of foresight, his performance in "Bing Bang Schlong" is the single-best in all of Taskmaster New Zealand's history when it comes to final scores, with him earning 26 points, a rare point total he shares with the UK's Tim Vine (from Series 6's "H") and Richard Herring (from Series 10's "I Hate Your Trainers"). The only person to have surpassed him in an episode with standard scoring are Sophie Duker, who earned 28 points in Series 13, and Dara Ó Briain, who earned 30 points in Series 14, on the UK original. Beyond that, there are only Katherine Ryan and Richard Osman in Series 2's "A Pistachio Eclair" (with 30 and 27 points, respectively) was thanks to a live task that allowed contestants to earn points beyond the 5-point scale.
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Notably became the first person to intentionally cheat on Taskmaster New Zealand. While building a castle out of Weet-Bix, he could get extra materials by eating dry biscuits. Instead of completely eating the biscuits, he took a few bites and hid the rest in his pockets, which got caught on camera and led to himself and Urzila getting disqualified.
  • Did Not Think This Through: He has a habit of barreling ahead with tasks without considering task parameters, resulting in him being placed last more than once.
  • Gentleman Detective: His one-minute film in "At Your Service" ends with a Detective Reginald Bathgate coming in to defeat the villain (after he's killed everyone else) and twirling an umbrella in victory. Paul says that Matt spent most of the task time developing that character.
  • Extreme Omnivore: The cast were told explicitly not to put any of the prize task submissions for "Bing Bang Schlong" in their mouths because almost all could cause harm. Matt ignored this and ate some of his own submission (because he knew what was edible and what wasn't) and then took a swig of petrol.note
  • Failed a Spot Check: While performing the most festive Christmas song without using any forbidden words, he somehow said one ("tree") in the very first verse despite practicing and re-reading the lyrics seven times.
  • Genre Blind: As mentioned in the finale watch-along, Matt had never seen any episodes of the NZ or UK versions of Taskmaster, meaning he wasn’t aware of certain methods to complete tasks like asking the Taskmaster’s Assistant for help with certain actions.
  • Genre Savvy: Despite not watching the shows before, he quickly became aware that some of the tasks had tricks to win them, such as the one tin of beans he had to find in a pile of tinned tomatoes being marked underneath and visible through a glass table, or when given confusing instructions and told to find the endpoint, it was right at the start point.
  • Hidden Depths: Matt is often mocked for being more inept than most of the contestants, but in "Bing Bang Schlong" he was the only one to work out north (as opposed to guessing or relying on a faulty compass), reasoning that the house will be north-facing to take advantage of the sun—and correctly guessed that the convoluted directions would eventually lead back to the task's starting point anyway.
  • Motor Mouth: Paul remarks that Matt is very chatty during tasks, to the point where he gets sidetracked and forgets what he's actually supposed to do.
  • Never My Fault: Sometimes blame Paul and other circumstances for his poor performance in tasks when it's obviously his own doing.
    Matt: That was Paul's idea!
Paul: Don't blame me for this!
Guy: You don't have to do Paul's ideas.
Matt: Yeah, but I didn't have any of my own.

Urzila Carlson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tnz_urzila_carlson.png
"I don't need to win. I just don't need to embarrass my family."
A South African-New Zealand comedian and actress. She is best known for being a frequent panelist on the Three panel show 7 Days, a judge on the The Masked Singer Australia, and a regular panelist the Panel Quiz Have You Been Paying Attention?.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Urzila is on the larger side, and the cast are visibly appreciative of her entry of boudoir photographs for one prize task, with her even offering Jeremy his own copies.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Urzila is loud and outspoken, and at one point tells Paul that when a task requires her to wrestle or box him she will easily win.
  • Butch Lesbian: She evokes this in her pre-recorded tasks by wearing work clothes complete with tool belt.
Urzila: I'll take off my tool belt first. It doesn't have tools in it, I'm just a lesbian.
  • Dirty Old Woman: Frequently objectifies and sexualizes Paul and even claims he's in love with her.note
  • The Gadfly: In the "Time Travel" task she essentially performs a monologue about her time in boarding school while smoking. However, since she hadn't learned to speak English at this point, she speaks in Afrikaans, to Paul's genuine confusion. She later admits that she hadn't told him in advance that she wouldn't be speaking English.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: She immediately cashes in her prize voucher for one French kiss from Laura after she wins "Feel My Bean".
  • Hypocritical Humour: Claims that having shoes a full set of teeth is enough for her hometown, Benoni, to be proud of her. When Paul repeats one of her claims to clarify, she becomes aghast and tells him not to judge.
  • Mean Boss: She takes on this dynamic with Paul, abusing, belittling, and harassing him at every turn.
  • N-Word Privileges: Makes several jokes about her hometown of Benoni in South Africa, but grows aghast when Paul does so.
  • Pink Is Feminine: She wears a hot-pink high-vis jacket and matching sneakers for the pre-recorded tasks.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Urzila will freely admit to putting little effort into tasks she knows she won't win, most notably during the Christmas song task.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: While everyone else tried and failed to finesse the lotion squirting task, Urzila simply slams her hand down on the nozzle and handily wins by a large margin.
  • Too Much Information: While constructing an inappropriate wedding cake, she starts off on a graphic riff about bowel movements that makes Paul very uncomfortable.
Urzila: You've got the ring of shit, basically like a toilet bowl. And then you've got the solid "Hey, I don't have a lot of fiber, but when I do I have a lot of fiber!" And here, the red on it, it's just the pressure as it comes through ripping and tearing...You get ointment that you can just, like, get right in there and that can be solved like in a day or two. If you have short fingers, you have to ask your neighbour! 'Cause I've got really short fingers, but my neighbour, Gary, he can get in there! Whoo!
