Miller Family

     Ginny Miller

Portrayed by: Antonia Gentry

A fifteen year old girl who struggles with being more mature than her mother.

     Georgia Miller

Portrayed by: Brianne Howey

A single mother in her early thirties with a teenage daughter.

  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Downplayed compared to some examples. Georgia is in her early 30s and mentioned to have gotten pregnant with Ginny when she was 15, Ginny's current age, explaining their close age range as mother/daughter.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Georgia is a near-constant source of embarrassment for Ginny, such as teasing her about her dating life to showing up at school dressed like a model with a nice car, shining the spotlight on herself.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Georgia's main survival strategy. She puts on a pretty and smiling face... and then stabs you in the back.
  • Dude Magnet: According to her daughter Ginny, Georgia has no trouble attracting men at all, which is not surprising given her beauty and charm. Georgia later even describes herself as a magnet for them.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: She is considered a blonde bombshell who is very attractive for the men around her.
  • Freudian Excuse: It's implied that Georgia's immaturity can be linked to her Teen Pregnancy with Ginny that led to some form of arrested development, leaving the woman as an immature adult.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: Thoroughly averted as much of the story is about her struggling to survive as well as raise her child properly.
  • Justified Criminal: Most of things that Georgia has done has been to either survive, escape abuse, or protect her children.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's immature and morally sketchy for a mother but she does try to make sure her kids have a better life than her.
  • Mama Bear: Georgia is extremely protective of her children, often to murderous lengths.
  • Oblivious to Love: Oblivious to Joe's fellings for her.
  • Parental Favoritism: Downplayed, Georgia loves both her children but she definitely gives more attention to Ginny than Austin, to the point she can be unintentionally neglectful of him.
  • Parents as People: Georgia can be emotionally neglectful towards her children by being immature and irresponsible, but her heart is always in the right place and she does try out giving genuine love to her kids.
  • Proud Beauty: Georgia is quite aware of her good looks, showing them off with outfits which show her cleavage and legs often, plus always making herself up before going out.
  • Stacy's Mom: Georgia is very attractive, which is noticed by boys her daughter's age and also by Maxine.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: As far as we know, she killed three people. Two of them were abusive men that she killed to protect herself and her family. The third one was mercy killing.
  • Womanchild: Can be extremely petty for a 30+ year old, somewhat justified as she only had Ginny at 15 and didn't have the most well-developed childhood during her formative years.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Downplayed - When Georgia learns Austin is being bullied at school, she takes her son over and has him punch the bully in the face before she herself grabs his bloody nose and threatens to break it if he tells anyone. Georgia then cheerfully returns the sobbing child to his mother.

     Austin Miller

Portrayed by: Diesel La Torraca

Ginny's half-brother

  • Nice Guy: Easy to get along, it takes a lot for him to finally turn on his father.
  • The Quiet One: Is more taciturn than Ginny.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Austin regularly displays this, an unfortunate consequence of emulating his mother Georgia. He’s quick to throw a punch at a boy’s nose as soon as his mom says to, stabs that same boy in the hand with a pencil, sets the garden on fire, refuses to talk for some time, takes a gun and shoots his father without a hint of hesitation, and according to Paul, is way too comfortable with an axe.

Teenagers

     Maxine "Max" Baker

Portrayed by: Sara Waisglass

Ginny's best friend.

  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: To her mother Ellen. Max is a selfish and rebellious teenage girl who is prone to misbehaving.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She is not deadpan like her brother, but is easily one of the snarkiest characters, as she likes to snark about everyone.
  • Drama Queen: She overreacts when when she finds out that Ginny slept with Max's brother Marcus, being melodramatic and refusing to forgive Ginny for months.
  • Genki Girl: It's downplayed as she doesn't always act like this, but when in a good mood Max is bouncy, extremely cheerful and energetic.
  • Hot-Blooded: She is the most excitable and emotional in her group of friends.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being self-centered and occasionally unreasonable, she genuinely loves her friends.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Max is only occasionally called Maxine in the series.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: Max jokingly says she'd have her phone surgically grafted to her hand if she could.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The fun-loving Energetic Girl, while her brother Marcus is the stoic and brooding Savvy Guy.
  • Tomboyish Name: Max for Maxine, a slightly tomboyish lesbian.

     Marcus Baker

Portrayed by: Felix Mallard

Max's twin brother and Ginny's neighbor.

  • Deadpan Snarker: He most likely gets his dry wit from his dad.
  • Freudian Excuse: Marcus may be a difficult person, but is also deeply upset because his best friend died of cancer the previous year.
  • Friend to All Children: Marcus gets along well with Ginny's brother Austin and their cousin Caleb.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In the first season, he is sort of a brooding jerk and a bad boyfriend to Padma, but he genuinely falls in love with Ginny.
  • Only Sane Man: Marcus comes across as this, having a reasonably deadpan reaction to most of what goes on around him.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The stoic and brooding Savvy Guy to his sister Maxine's fun-loving Energetic Girl.
  • Stalker with a Crush: He climbs through Ginny's window the first day he meets her, even when they barely knew each other.
  • Troubled, but Cute: A classic example. A good-looking and enigmatic loner who is struggling with a Freudian Excuse and suffering from depression, falls in love with the main heroine, and she loves him back.

     Abby

Portrayed by: Katie Douglas

A friend of Ginny and Max.

  • Freudian Excuse: Her parents are divorcing (which has clearly traumatized her) and she's having self-image troubles (even taping down her legs to appear thinner and has an implied eating disorder). She also called for a meeting with her friends to open up about her negative feelings regarding this, only to be met with a Kick the Dog moment by Ginny.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She can be as rude and selfish as Ginny and Max, but is not a bad person and has her caring moments.
  • With Friends Like These...: She and Ginny have moments of being terrible friends to each other.

     Norah

Portrayed by: Chelsea Clark

Another friend of Ginny and Max.

  • The Generic Girl: The least developed out of Ginny's friends, and this makes her also the most harmless.
  • Satellite Character: She is another friend who hangs out with Ginny, Max, and Abby but we don't know much about her.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Played by a Filipina-Canadian actor and is adopted by white parents.

     Hunter Chen

Portrayed by: Mason Temple

A student who dates Ginny.

  • The Ace: He is popular at school, part of a band, and also a very good student.
  • Big Man on Campus: He is well-liked at school, and one of the most popular guys, but never acts like a jerk because of it.
  • Loved by All: At least in-universe, he is liked by all the characters except Marcus.
  • Nice Guy: A kind and thoughtful boyfriend to Ginny.
  • Nice Guys Finish Last: Despite being a studious and popular Nice Guy, his relationship with Ginny doesn't last, because the one Ginny truly loves is bad boy Troubled Teen Marcus.
  • Romantic False Lead: He dates Ginny in season 1, but he was never meant to be the one for her.
  • Token Minority: Has East Asian and white descent, and is the only prominent boy of color at the school.

Adults

     Ellen Baker

Portrayed by: Jennifer Robertson

The Millers' neighbor and the mother of Max and Marcus.

  • Nice Girl: Friendly and easygoing, and tries her best to be a good mom.
  • Stepford Smiler: Behind her cheery friendliness, she has to deal with two teenagers like Max and Marcus, which is quite stressful for her.

     Paul Randolph

Portrayed by: Scott Porter

The mayor and Georgia's love interest.

  • Chick Magnet: It's stated that most women in town are attracted to him.
  • Nice Guy: He appears to be a good-natured and caring person, especially to Georgia.
  • Office Romance: He is the Mayor who gets involved with his assistant Georgia.

     Joe

Portrayed by: Raymond Ablack

A bartender who has met Georgia once in the past.

  • Dogged Nice Guy: Silently pining over Georgia, and often helping her.
  • Nice Guy: One of the most selfless and generous characters.
  • Ship Tease: With Georgia, since he has an obvious crush on her, even though she is dating another man.
  • Token Minority: Joe is among the only men of color in the town, played by Indo-Guyanese-Canadian Raymond Ablack.
