YMMV / Ginny and Georgia

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: Ginny's selfish and bratty attitude towards her mother and friends and always playing the victim didn't do much to endear her to a lot of people. Eventually, both Georgia (in episode 6) and Abby (in episode 8) have their moments when they get sick of her attitude and give Ginny a slap. For the many viewers who can't stand Ginny, these moments were very satisfying.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Using someone's ashes as gunpowder for fireworks? Teetering at the Moral Event Horizon. Those same ashes belonging to someone that harassed Georgia and would've done the same to Ginny as a toddler? Darkly funny.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Joe, for being a genuine Nice Guy and astoundingly handsome.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Though Georgia is caught in a love triangle between Paul and Zion, most fans would rather she get with Joe instead.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Georgia's storyline was far more well-received when compared to the high-school plot, being considered one of the predominant reasons why viewers stuck with the show.
  • Narm: A lot of the more dramatic moments within the storylines of the teenagers are thought to come off as unintentionally funny and cringe-worthy due to the show's poor attempt at depicting Gen-Z high-schoolers; by far the most infamous example is the argument between Ginny and Hunter in episode 8 in which they accuse each other of being whitewashed, with both criticizing one another for not being more stereotypical (Hunter even name-dropped the term "oppression Olympics").
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The most famous thing about this show is an incident involving what was considered a tasteless one-liner. The line "You go through men faster than Taylor Swift" was proved so controversial even Swift herself called the writers out on it, with her callout gaining worldwide attention after she posted it at the start of Women’s History Month.
  • Padding: It's been noted by reviewers how the show tends to have a musical/dance number/montage in almost every episode that doesn't actually bring anything to the story. If anything, it just adds to the Narm factor of the show for being unrealistic.
  • The Scrappy: Ginny. Her self-absorbed and destructive personality, It's All About Me attitude, and selfish treatment towards her friends and mother do her no favors, but just to rub salt in the wound, she has little to no redeeming qualities beyond her Big Sister Instinct toward Austin. While some were willing to forgive her flaws since she's a teenager and does have a tumultuous home life, most people found her extremely unlikeable and hard to sympathize with. To say nothing of the first season finale and her running away with Austin...
  • Spiritual Successor:
    • Believe it or not, of Gilmore Girls, which has been pointed out even before the show had started airing. And, despite the tonal differences, the characters' personalities and dynamics, the setting (a little New England town with some magic), and even the premise ("They are mother and daughter AND also best friends") call back to the WB series. Though it could also be considered the other way round and seen as a Deconstruction of the earlier show since the dysfunctional and erratic, self-centered behavior of the characters turn them into pretty messed up individuals.
    • In tone, some reviewers have pointed out the show is similar to Desperate Housewives; with characters having soapy and totally over-the-top secrets.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • One of the main criticisms of the show is that most of the high school characters are extremely selfish and petty, frequently disregarding basic logic and mature thinking that's ridiculous even from a teenager's perspective. This made it very hard for viewers to sympathize with them, to the point that many ended up rooting against them.
    • Ginny, as stated above, is a big offender. She's prone to initiating fights with her mother Georgia and often insults her unprovoked, whilst Georgia is only trying to give her kids a good life (something she didn't have due to having Abusive Parents, which Ginny becomes aware of and outright dismisses). She also gets very defensive and hostile with anyone who disagrees with her poor behavior (including repeatedly cheating on her loving boyfriend). Many viewers felt bad for Georgia for her poor relationship with Ginny.
