• Actor-Shared Background:
  • Antonia Gentry is biracial like Ginny, although she has a white father and black mother instead of a black father and white mother.
  • Mason Temple, similarly, is half Taiwanese and half white the same as Hunter.
  • Humberly González is Latina like her character Sophie Sanchez.
• California Doubling: Set in New England, it's filming locations are Coburg and Toronto, Ontario.
• Dawson Casting: Antonia Gentry was 23 playing the 15 year old Ginny when the series started. This also goes for most other teenage characters on the show.
• Disabled Character, Disabled Actor: Clint Baker, Max and Marcus' dad, is deaf. He's played by actor Chris Kenopic, who is deaf too.
• Fake American:
  • Though the characters are Americans, most support roles were played by Canadians, such as Nikki Roumel (Young Georgia), Mason Temple (Hunter), Sara Waisglass (Max), Humberly González (Sophie), Raymond Ablack (Joe), Katie Douglas (Abby), Chelsea Clark (Norah), Jonathan Potts (Mr. Gitten) and Sabrina Gredvich (Cynthia Fuller), due to being filmed in Ontario.
  • Australian Felix Mallard played Marcus.
• Queer Character, Queer Actor: Humberly González plays Sophie, who dates Max (a girl) while she's also mentioned to have dated boys and girls before and dates a boy after Max as well. González is queer herself.
• Real-Life Relative: One of Joe's employees is Padma. His actor (Raymond Ablack) and hers (Rebecca Ablack) are siblings.
• Underage Casting: Brianne Howey plays Georgia, mother of Ginny (whom she gave birth to at 15). Antonia Gentry plays Ginny, who's eight years younger than her.
• Write What You Know:
  • Director Anya Adams, lead character Antonia Gentry and showwriter Brianna Belser are all biracial women like Ginny. The trio collaborated on giving input to her character on the series. Real quotes were even used from Antonia Gentry's life for things which people say to Ginny.
  • The much-criticized "Oppression Olympics" exchange Ginny and Hunter have is another example. Gentry and Mason Temple (Hunter) largely wrote each other's dialogue as well, based on actual things people have told them.
