Characters / Blue's Clues: Family Members

Go To

Don't be fooled, although the protagonists are in fact a big Family of Choice who love and support each other unconditionally, they all still have their own individual families who love them. The purpose of this page is to organize these family members together, so that it is easier to find them.

    open/close all folders
     In General
Tropes shared among the protagonists' family members.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: The main characters’ grandfathers will usually have thicker eyebrows than usual.
  • It Runs in the Family: Whatever the main characters were talented at, typically the family will likely share the same talent or interest.
  • Shared Family Quirks: In most cases, their family members will share the same peculiarities, even if on different levels, Steve's grandmother always wears green stripes like her grandson, and acts like The Gadfly like Joe, Lola sings at random moments like Josh and so on.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: The animated characters look a lot like the protagonists that they should be related to, to the point where they look almost recolors. The exception is the grandfather's clock, which although not so similar, still has the same color palette as his granddaughter's.

Tickety's grandfather

  • Ambiguous Situation: It is unclear whether his name is actually grandfather clock, or if the characters are calling him grandfather like they do Steve's grandmother and Grandfather Thyme.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: A sentient grandfather clock, accompanied by a sentient pendulum.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has eyebrows that are noticeably wider than those of other characters.
  • The Blank: Like Sidetable, he can enter an inanimate form when not interacting with other characters.
  • Cute Mute: He usually doesn't speak, with only his inner voice being heard and despite being elderly he is as adorable as the rest of the characters.
  • Doting Grandparent: Implied. Although we never see their interactions on screen, Tickety seems to love and admire him greatly, which is presumably reciprocal
  • Gigantic Adults, Tiny Babies: It's a big Grandfather Clock a little bigger than Steve, but his granddaughter is a little alarm clock.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: His granddaughter is tiny, while he is taller than Steve.
  • The Quiet One: He never speaks a single word on screen, although we can hear him speak when Steve and Blue Skidoo enter him in "Blue's Surprise at Two O'Clock".

Actress: Rue McClanahan
Series: 1 (Blue's Clues)

Characteristic Pattern : Green Stripes

Joe and Steve's grandmother, who is also the person who organizes the treasure hunt from "Blue's Big Treasure Hunt".

  • The Cameo: Although she never appears directly on screen beyond her debut episode, she was frequently referenced through drawings as the series went on.
  • Cool Old Lady: A lady who inspired her grandson Steve's love of mysteries and organizes a treasure hunt just for his amusement.
  • Granny Classic: A Old lady who teaches her grandchildren to sew, likes to cook, wears glasses and likes rocking chairs.
  • Needlework Is for Old People: Although she was never shown sewing, she was the one who taught Steve how to sew when he was very young.
  • No Name Given: Only called Grandma by her Steve, her real name is never revealed.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Like Steve whenever she is portrayed she will be wearing green striped clothes.
  • Unnamed Parent: She was never given a name and was exclusively called Grandma in all her mentions and appearances. In a Tik Tok, Angela Santomero implied that her name was really Grandma.

Series: 2
Episodes: 4 note

Mrs. Pepper's mom, who as the name suggests, is a talking Cayenne Pepper Shaker.
  • Acrofatic: She is a little heavier than the other members of her part of the family and also is physically fit to the point that her skidoo animation is a backflip.
  • Big Fun: She is noticeably bigger and broader compared to the rest of the family, and as Marty McParty can testify she is extremely fun to be around.
  • Cool Old Lady: She's an elderly lady, who is so lively that she rivals Marty McParty in excitement, as well as being very athletic and an incredible cook.
  • Doting Grandparent: She is patient and encouraging with her grandchildren (who are the reason she is grateful on Thank you Day).
  • Family Theme Naming: daughter and eldest grandaughter, she is based on a kind of spice involving peppers, she is named after ground cayenne.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: Inverted. Grandma Cayenne is one of the oldest members of the Spice family but also one of the tallests.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Old: She hasn't changed much from Mrs. Pepper's childhood to Cinnamon's birth, although she appears to have aged a bit in her appearance in the reboot, by looking a little wider and taller.
  • Small Parent, Huge Child: Inverted Trope. Grandma Cayenne is noticeably bigger than her daughter Mrs. Pepper.
  • Vibrant Orange: She is dark orange in the reboot and is a happy and spicy lady.

One of the family's aunts who, as the name suggests, is a living nutmeg pot.

  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: She's is thin, Grandes Cayenne is big and Grandfather Thyme is Short.
  • Identical Grandson: More like an identical nephew, she actually looks like an older version of Cinnamon, except a little lighter.

Characteristic Color: Blue Stripes

Josh's grandmother, a Filipino immigrant to the storybook world
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: A singer as good as her grandson Josh, no wonder her favorite hobby is karaoke.
  • Color Motif: Like Josh, she is associated with blue, albeit a darker shade.
  • Cool Old Lady: Lola is a great cook, singer and is looked upon with admiration by several members of the yellow house (most notably her grandson Josh).
  • Cool Teacher: At least in the controversial "Blue's Clues Nursery Rhymes" she works as a kindergarten teacher and even here she is a Cool Old Lady. It is not known whether she works or worked as a teacher at canon at some point.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": Her name is canonically Lola, which means grandma. Meaning her grandchildren are calling her grandma while other people are calling her by her name.
  • It Runs in the Family: Like her grandchildren, she has a love of cooking and music in general.
  • Stealth Pun: Her name is a joke on the fact that she is a grandmother, Lola is a real name of Hispanic origin but also the Filipino word for grandma, making her Josh’s lola Lola.
  • The Storyteller: She is seen in some official videos of the series retelling to the viewer some stories about Josh and Blue's adventures from the first season.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: To Steve and Joe Grandmother. As Steve and Joe's grandmother she wears the same clothing standard as her grandson, is the answer to Blue's clues for her debut episode and is the main inspiration for her grandson's goals.
  • True Blue Femininity: A classic and adorable grandmother who, like her grandson, is associated with the color blue

Linda and Paulo

Location: Philippines
Actor: Genny Sermonia (Linda), Jason Sermonia (Paulo)
Series: 1 (Blue's Clues & You!)
Episodes: 2 note
Characteristic Pattern: Red Floral (Paulo) Gray Stripes (Linda)

Josh's cousins who live in the Philippines.

  • Brother–Sister Team: They were not seen separately in any of their appearances, always working together.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: They first appeared as the "Feelin’ Filipino" email video before having a major role in “Kamusta Philippines”.
  • Floral Motifs: Red flowers, which are the colors of the floral sculpture they make for their cart at the parade and the flowers on Paulo's floral shirt. Red flowers are associated with passion in addition to respect, desire, and courage, which are also the themes of their standout episode, where Josh and they need to overcome their Stage Fright together as a family because they love to sing.
  • It Runs in the Family: Like their cousin Josh and their grandmother Lola, they are extremely artistic in multiple areas with the most visible being singing.
  • Shrinking Violet: Downplayed. While they don't appear to be shy, they are kinda insecure about singing in front of people outside their family, preferring to stick to karaoke. Fortunately, being with Josh and Lola makes them lose that insecurity.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Successful cousin syndrome in this case. It is implied that they feel this way about Josh, even saying that unlike Josh, they are only good at singing karaoke.

Slick

Location: ???
Voiced By: Benjamin Hum
Series: 1 (Blue's Clues & You!)
Episodes: 2 note
Characteristic Color: Green

Slippery's cousin.

  • The Ace: Implied by Slippery but never shown on screen that Slick is better than him at almost everything he does.
  • Bubble Gun: One of his equipment as a "Smell Buster". The bubbles he releases are capable of cleaning anything they touch in a matter of seconds.
  • Character Catchphrase: When someone mentions the word "fast": "I'm faster than lightning"
  • Clashing Cousins: Downplayed. Slippery has a one-sided rivalry with him, but Slick never notices, only thinking they are in friendly competition.
  • Delinquent Hair: Although not actually a delinquent, his "hair" is meant to resemble a Greaser.
  • Fast as Lightning: His Character Catchphrase is to say that he is faster than lightning.
  • Greaser Delinquents: His design was created to project this trope, being a super fast and arrogant racer with a giant pompadour (made out of toothpaste) that he makes a point of combing whenever he's trying to look cool.
  • Green and Mean: SubvertedTrope. He's green, but despite being a bit arrogant, he's generally quite pleasant.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He's generally a nice guy, but he seems to have a hard time reading the room and realizing that his constant bragging about how fast he is is making his cousin uncomfortable.
  • Nice Guy: Arrogance aside, Slick is genuinely a friendly guy who just wants to have a good time competing with his cousin. He also seems quite willing to help the members of the yellow house, at the cost of his own comfort, even though he doesn't live there himself.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Downplayed. He's the manly man for Slippery sensitive guy. Slick is designed to look like a delinquent driver, is quite confident of his abilities, and acts more arrogantly, meanwhile, Slippery is more sensitive and emotional, with little confidence but a lot of kindness in his heart.
  • Spirited Competitor: He's competitive, cocky, and loves racing in general, and wants to be the fastest runner, which hurts Slippery a little, but he also values his teammates and opponents and is a genuinely nice and friendly guy.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Slick is basically a Palette Swap for Slippery with the color green and a pompadour made of toothpaste.
  • Unknown Rival: He never seems to realize that his cousin harbors some resentment for him being faster and a bit arrogant, and just assumes they are on good terms.
