• Due to how transliteration works, i.e. reading the name aloud in the original language and then recording a rough approximation, any American The Adjectival Man superhero becomes "-men".
• Beast Wars: While for most Transformer media names were just transliterated^note Translation usually causes Narm and it's hard to adjust a seemingly simple name grammatically while keeping gender, number, prepositions and other stuff correct — for example, "Star Destroyer" literally translates to either "destroyer of stars" or "destroyer from the stars" and you have to pick one, BW was an exception.
  • Due to clunky translations, Rattrap, Cheetor, Airazor, Blackarachnia and Silverbolt were renamed to Плъхотрон (Plăkhotron, "Rat-o-tron"), Леотроп (Leotrop, inexplicably), Стрела (Strela, "Arrow"), Черна Вдовица (Cherna Vdovitza, "Black Widow"), and Сребробот (Srebrobot, "Silverbot"), respectively.
  • Rhinox, Waspinator, Quickstrike, Depth Charge, Starscream and Optimus Primal had the mundane parts in their names translated, separated and adapted into adjectives where necessary: Носорогс (Nosorogs), Осинатор (Osinator), Бърз Удар (Bărz Udar), Торпедо (Torpedo), Звезден Писък (Zvezden Pisăk, "Star Scream"), and Оптимус Първичен (Optimus Părvichen); the latter caused some weirdness with the introduction of Optimus Prime, who became Оптимус Първи (Optimus Părvi, "Optimus the First").
  • Megatron, Tarantulas, Dinobot, Inferno and, oddly, Rampage and Ravage, had their names unchanged, save for a bit of Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable in the case of Tarantulas because in Bulgarian, the word "tarantula" has the accent on the 'U', and the 'I' in Dinobot sounded like "tin".
• Harry Potter:
  • The series mostly avoids that, instead going for transliteration. One notable exception is the Polyjuice Potion, which is renamed to многоликова отвара (mnogolikova otvara, "many-face potion").
  • Voldemort's name is another unusual example — since the translator (correctly) figured out that Voldemort's name came from French mort ("death"), she knew the R was silent and his name was spelled as 'Voldemor' (see the above explanation about the transliteration). This (among other things, such as the 'I' in 'Riddle' and the verb 'I am' sounding nothing alike) caused some trouble in Book 2 when the anagram of Tom Riddle's name turned into a clunky "Here I am also Lord Voldemort" and added a bunch of letters to the name 'Marvolo', changing it to Мерсволуко, Mersvoluko.
• The Lord of the Rings did this a lot.
  • Bilbo and Frodo's last name was rather well translated to Торбинс (Torbins, from торба, "bag") and Bag End to Торбодън (Torbodăn, rhymes with 'pun', but some readers assumed it is an English name like 'Thorbodden', "Bagbottom"), Sackville-Baggins Влачи-Торбинс (Vlachi-Torbins, "Drag-Baggins"), and Gollum as Ам-Гъл (Am-Gull, onomatopoeiae for taking a bite and gulping, respectively).
  • Other translations were not so lucky, such as Dunharrow, which became Черноден (Chernoden, "Blackday").
  • The translator sometimes confused Tolkien's etymology, both in Conlang and real-life languages (mostly Celtic or Middle/Old English) used as Translation Convention, and used this false etymology as a base for translation.
• Star Wars mostly uses transliteration, but this results in some unintended hilarity, like 'Darth' being turned into "Dart", Yoda sounding like "The Iodine" or 'Darth Maul' like "Dart Mall" (although there were no typical shopping malls in Bulgaria yet when The Phantom Menace came out). 'Sith' is also transliterated like "sit", but in combination with 'Lord' or with a plural suffix, it sounds like "a full lord" (one who's had enough to eat) and "the full ones", respectively, so instead the title is translated as "sitski lord" and "of the Sith" in Revenge of the Sith became na Sita ("of the [one] Sith"). It still kind of fits, since out of the three Sith Lords in the movie, only Sidious is having any kind of revenge.
• A Song of Ice and Fire:
  • The translator usually tries to go for a Woolseyism and usually succeeds in making translated names sound "folksy". However, some names end up inaccurate. Riverrun for example is translated as "River Fall" despite no waterfalls nearby. Highgarden is even more egregious, because the translator took the 'high' part of the name and ran with it, turning it into "Mountain Paradise". Storm's End, on the other hand, is a case of Incidental Multilingual Wordplay because krai means both "reach" as in the far end of a territory, and "end", so it means "Stormy Reach" and also hints at the name's other meaning of "the end of storms".
  • Other names are less successfully translated, especially in cases of Lord Country — while, for example, 'Hornwood' is easily translated as "Rogov Les", 'Lord Hornwood' gets turned into "Lord Rogov Les", which sounds either like You No Take Candle or as if the lord himself is a wood.
  • Many unusually spelled names got transliterated in a very weird way — some names like 'Reyne', 'Jeyne' or 'Poole' got a -и (-ee) instead of a silent 'e'. An odd exception is 'Jaime' which instead of being read like 'Jamie' was made to rhyme with "rhyme".
  • Tywin's name also got transliterated as "Tivin".

  • The name John is usually translated as 約翰 (Yeuk-hohn), as is the German name 'Johann'.
    • A few other names of Biblical origin are also translated with a "Y" sound instead of a "J", such as Joshua (約書亞, Yeuk-syū-a), Jacob (雅各布, Ngáh-gok-bou), or Joseph (約瑟夫, Yeuk-sāt-fū).
  • Names with R-sounds are typically transliterated to have L-sounds instead due to a lack of R-sounds in Cantonese as a whole, which can lead to some awkward connotations in transliterated names.
  • Similarly, names with N-sounds can sometimes be transliterated to have L-sounds as well due to less conservative pronunciations of Cantonese slurring N-sounds into L-sounds.
  • Most British politicians and major government officials have their names Sinicized into Cantonese, starting from the colonial era and lasting until present day, when most other Western names are directly transliterated in the modern day. Read more here.
• Classical Native American names: First, an explanation: Due to the way Chinese languages work, many classical Native American names, when translated literally to either language, rather than being transcribed phonetically compared with non-Native names, could make them sound like stereotypical names for Chinese warriors straight from either a Wuxia film or from Romance of the Three Kingdoms.     • Her parents' names are translated similarly as "Dad Chu" and "Mom Chu" (朱爸, 朱媽), but the Hopps Family Farm is still the Hopps Family Farm (哈氏家族農場, Hā-sih Gā-juhk Nùhng-chèuhng, the "Farm of the Ha Family/Clan"), which begs the question of why the translators didn't give Judy the actual Chinese surname "Ho" (何, Hòh, pronounced like a non-rhotic "hor" rather than "hoe") or something similar instead, which sounds much more like "Hopps" and fixes the slight Dub-Induced Plot Hole.
  • Nick Wilde's given name to Ah Lik (阿力, A-lihk). To be fair, 阿 (Ah) is a prefix used for diminutives (or nicknames) in Cantonese, and in contemporary Cantonese, speakers often slur N-sounds into L-sounds (as mentioned above), so it's close enough to "Ah Nick" and thus makes it a lot more downplayed than it initially seems with the given context.
  • (Mayor) Leodore Lionheart to Sze Wing-shek (獅永石, Sī Wíhng-sehk), where 獅 (Sze) means "lion" and sounds the same as the Cantonese surname Sze (施/司/師, Sī).^note They also sound like other Cantonese surnames which are pronounced similarly but with different tones. 永石 ('Wing-shek' in Cantonese) is a Chinese name that means "eternal stone".
  • Dawn Bellwether to Miss Baa (咩小姐, Mē Síu-jé), where 咩 (mē, pronounced similarly to "meh" stretched out) is the onomatopoeia of a sheep's baa and 小姐 (Síu-jé) is an honorific meaning "Miss".
  • Benjamin Clawhauser to Benji (賓治, Bān-jih or Ban-chi), which also evokes the image of fruit punch (雜果賓治 in Hong Kong Chinese).
  • Gazelle to Ga-sai Baby (嘉西BB, Gā-sāi Bìh-bī), where 嘉西 (Gā-sāi) sounds like a transliteration of "Gazelle" and she's named similarly to a beloved celebrity's stage name.
  • Emmitt Otterton to Lai Ah-man (賴阿文, Laaih A-màhn), where 阿文 (Ah-man, the given name) is a Chinese given name sounds like "Emmitt" in Cantonese and 賴 (Lai, the surname) is a Chinese surname looks similar to the Chinese character 獺 in "otter" (水獺).
  • Mr. Big to Godfather (教父, Gaau-fuh or Gau Fu). Very subtle, isn't it?
  • Mr. Manchas to Mr. Pau-man (豹紋先生, Paau-màhn Sīn-sāang), where 豹紋 (Paau-màhn) translates to 'leopard-patterns'.
  • Gideon Grey to Ah Tun (阿鈍, A-deuhn), where 鈍 (deuhn) means obtuse (as in an obtuse angle) or more indirectly, slow-witted.
  • Downplayed with Doug, who's called Uncle Tak, or Uncle Doug (德叔, Dāk Sūk), where 德 (dāk) means "virtue".
  • Woolter and Jesse to Dragon-8 and Dragon-9 (龍八, Lùhng-baat, Lung-bat; 龍九, Lùhng-gáu, Lung-kau), respectively.
  • In Zootopia itself, Tundratown is Teng-teng Town (騰騰鎮, Tàhng-tàhng Jan), which is pronounced the same as "shivering" in Cantonese (騰騰震, tàhng-tàhng-jan); Little Rodentia is, in layman's terms, "Rodents, One Nest" (鼠·壹窩, Syú Yāt-wō) and sounds like the title of a cheesy TV soap opera or private housing.

For Chinese transcriptions, traditional characters are given for the Taiwanese translation, while simplified characters are given for the Mainland Chinese and Singaporean translations. For consistency's sake, the pinyin system is used to transcribe the names as pronounced in Mandarin itself.

• Captain Underpants to Nèikù Chāorén (內褲超人, lit. "Underpants Superman") in Taiwan:
  • However, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is titled Nèikù Duìzhǎng (內褲隊長, lit. "Underpants Captain", which is a literal translation, given that a person's titles in Chinese are given after the name, and not before like in English)
  • George Beard to George Hu (DreamWorks, Taiwan). It's more understandable when you know that the Chinese surname Hú (胡) sounds the same as "beard" and is simplified as such in the Mainland.

    • Lois Griffin to Lú Lālā (盧拉拉), where Lú (盧) is her maiden name (most likely derived from her given name in the original, Lois)

    • Gabrielle (Delacour) to Ga'r (佳兒, Jiā'er). For context to how this got twisted, 佳 (jiā) acts as transliteration of the Ga-syllable, while keeping the naming pattern of her sister Fleur (花兒, Huā'er)
    • Professor (Minerva) McGonagall to Professor Mài (麥教授, Mài Jiàoshòu, taking just the "Mc" part)
    • Rubeus (Hagrid) to Ruba (魯霸, Lǔbà, lit. "rash/rough dominator" but also close enough of a transliteration)
    • Dolores Umbridge to Dorothy Umbridge (桃樂絲·恩不里居, Táolèsī Ēnbùlǐjū), which uses the "Dorothy" name transliteration in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but also transliterates her surname as roughly "kindness does not reside inside".

    • (Mayor) Leodore Lionheart to Shī Míngdé (獅明德), where 明德 (Míngdé) is a Chinese given name that means "bright/clear virtue" (his surname is explained above).
    • Dawn Bellwether to Yáng Miēmiē (楊咩咩), where 楊 (Yáng) is a very common Chinese surname which sounds the same as 羊 ("sheep"), and 咩 (miē, pronounced roughly "myeh") is the onomatopoeia of a sheep's baa.^note Together (羊咩咩), they are an affectionate, diminutive way of saying "sheep".
    • Benjamin Clawhauser to Hóng Jīnbào (洪金豹), where 洪 (Hóng) is a relatively common Chinese surname and 金豹 (jīnbào) means "golden leopard".
    • Gazelle to Big Sister Zhìlíng (志羚姐姐, Zhìlíng Jiějie), where 志 (zhì) translates to "ambition; will" (a common component in names, and may be a nod to the message in "Try Everything"?), and 羚 (líng) translates to "antelope".

English to Czech

In general, because Czech is a flexive language, names that allow for it will often be subtly changed to be easier to use, even if they remain essentially the same. This applies more often to female characters, as Czech female first names have a tendency to end with -a and foreign female names often don't. Even if such change does not occur, surnames of female characters will usually be fitted with the -ová or -ská ending common for Czech female versions of surnames (which can lead to less ease of use when the surname ends in a vowel, but old habits die hard).

• Jan Kantůrek, who does the Czech translations of Terry Pratchett, has a lot of fun with this trope. Sometimes he simply turns the names Czech by making them easier to use in his flexive mother tongue (thus, Magrat becomes Magráta), but very often a full change is required and joyfully provided (one of the fan favourites is Kyselá Prdel, "Sour Ass", for the village of Bad Ass, complete with a brand new origin story). The results can be somewhat mixed, but in a comedic series, this usually has a lot less adverse effect (and much more positive effect) than it would have in a more serious work.^note Kantůrek has repeatedly received awards for his translations of Discworld, and both his Dub Name Changes and the awards are even more impressive when you learn that his command of English is passive only.
• The Czech translations of J.R.R. Tolkien's Meaningful Names usually do this very accurately yet quite naturally (although some nuance in some cases is inevitably lost anyway). 'Baggins' is a good example: the Czech equivalent introduced by František Vrba, Pytlík, literally means "bag", and at the same time is an actual Czech surname.
• An old, turn of the 20th century translation had Huckleberry Finn as 'Frantík Finnů' ("Francis").

  • There's an interesting case in Mickey's Christmas Carol. In the original English, the characters look and sort of act like specific Disney characters but have names from the Dickens story, so the protagonist is Scrooge McDuck as Ebenezer Scrooge and so on. In the Finnish dub, rather than give them a bunch of English names the kids wouldn't recognise, they're just called with the Finnish names of the Disney characters, so the protagonist is called Roope Ankka (Scrooge McDuck). An exception is that Daisy Duck as (Isa)Belle is called Kultu Kimallus (Goldie O'Gilt) instead of Daisy since she's in the role of Scrooge's (whichever's) past girlfriend.
    
    There are a couple of other kind of examples here too. The good employed Fezziwig becomes "Reilunen" ("fair" + name suffix), and, for some ungodly reason, the Ghost of Christmas Past sounds like he's saying he's the "Ghost from Christmas Porridge".
• Elinor Wonders Why to Ilona ja luonnon ihmeet (Literally The Joy and the Wonders of Nature. However, Elinor's name is translated Ilona, which means it could also be Elinor and the Wonders of Nature in context).
  • As mentioned above, Elinor becomes Ilona, which means 'joy' in Finnish.
  • Ari to Lari.
  • Olive to Noora.
• The Famous Five are an unusual case. Julian becomes Leo and George/Georgina becomes Pauli/Paula. Timmy is always referred to as Tim. The names still sound English, but are easier for Finnish children to pronounce.
  • Similarly, Nancy Drew is known as Paula Drew.
• The Harry Potter translation changes any name that has a meaning or allusion or could be seen as having one if you squint. (Except for Potter...) Also some names that just don't. For some reason, "Trelawney" is analysed as "tree only shorter plus lawn plus name ending" and becomes the nonsensical "Punurmio". A different case is when Igor Karkaroff changes to Igor Irkoroff because Karkaroff sounded too similar to another "translated" name.
  • The translator wrote a book about the process of translating the Harry Potter books, and the example of the process of translating "Hogwarts" is somewhat illustrative: it became "Tylypahka", which means something like "Dourwart", because she debated with herself about which meaning of "hog" to go with and chose one you won't easily find even if you look through several English dictionaries. When, as it turned out later, it was really about the animals called hogs. Then again, this may be just as well, since if she'd gone that route, we might have ended up with the blatantly ugly "Sikapahka" — think "Pig-wart".
  • The name of Voldemort became Tom Lomen Valedro, anagram from Ma olen Voldemort (I Am Voldemort).
• The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings turn English names into Finnish (English is assumed to be translation from Westron). Non-English (Quenya, Sindarin, Adûinac, Khazad) names are left alone. Kersti Juva knew her stuff: that is exactly how J. R. R. Tolkien himself intended. The only notable exception is Rivendell which was not translated into Rotkolaakso. Some not-really-modern-English in names, which Tolkien intended to sound somewhat familiar to English-speakers, also gets translated into modern Finnish, including at least "Rautapiha" ("iron yard") for "Isengard" (which according to Wikipedia means "iron fortress").
• In The Incredibles, most characters' names are changed into a Finnish equivalent, such as Robert "Bob" Parr becoming Ilari "Ilu" Vaara. The supers were also given different names, such as Elastigirl becoming "Neiti Rajaton" (Miss Limitless), Frozone becoming Hyytäjä (Chiller/Freezer), and Mr. Incredible becoming Herra Ihme (Mr. Wonder/Miracle), which also manages to preserve his "i" initial. Syndrome's name is simply translated directly ("Syndrooma"), while Mirage's name isn't changed at all.

But like its English counterpart (before LotR), the image it evokes was more that of pixie- or fairy-like creatures, an association Tolkien desired to avoid (for the same reason he wrote of "dwarves" instead of "dwarfs"), supposing instead the older, less-used term Alb(en)/Elb(en) for the translation. ^note He probably went with Elben versus the more "classical" Germanic word Alben because Alben still has the rather spooky connotations of The Fair Folk; the German Albtraum, which literally translates as "elf-dream," means "nightmare."
