Sun Pirates

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/op_sun_pirates_symbol.png

A pirate crew formed by the Fish-men and Mermen slaves Fisher Tiger freed from Mariejois, as well as other inhabitants from Fish-Man Island swayed by Tiger's charisma, like the Arlong Pirates and the Macro Pirates. They are exceptionally dangerous as their nature as Fish-men and Mermen mean they can easily swim in the sea to ambush and flee. They also happen to have a signature sun brand designed to erase the Celestial Dragon marks of slavery, even those who didn't originally have the mark have the sun tattoo as a sign that everyone is equal, whether they are a former slave or not.

After Tiger dies, eight years before the beginning of the story, and Jimbei assumes leadership followed by accepting an invite to join the Seven Warlords, the original crew breaks off between those who support Jimbei's decision, the Arlong Pirates who go rogue in the East Blue, and the Macro Pirates who ironically go into the slave trade themselves. During the timeskip, after Jimbei resigns from the Warlords to support Whitebeard, they then sought protection under Big Mom's flag, but have renounced it after deciding to help out the Straw Hat Pirates against her forces. As of the end of the Whole Cake Island arc, Jimbei has left the crew to join the Straw Hats, leaving the leadership to Aladdin. The last time they are seen, they face off Big Mom's fleet in a clearly desperate battle, though Jimbei later notes that they indeed survived.

    In General

  • Breaking the Fellowship: Jimbei becoming a Warlord didn't sit well with Arlong, so he and his original Arlong Pirates left, and a third party split, creating the Macro Pirates. The crew itself went into something of a hibernation period as that decision allowed the remaining crewmates to return home to Fish-Man Island; that ended after Jimbei resigned from the Warlords, forcing them to reunite as an active subordinate crew under Big Mom as part of the agreement for her protection of Fish-Man Island.
  • Delaying Action: They fight Big Mom's crew to give the Straw Hats a chance to escape.
  • The Dreaded: In addition to Jimbei's (former) status as a Warlord of the Sea, the Sun Pirates as a whole are an extremely powerful and feared crew. So much so that Big Mom considered the promise of their allegiance along with a monthly candy tribute enough to extend her protection to Fish-Man Island.
  • Embarrassing Tattoo: They had the Hoof of the Flying Dragon, the mark of slaves of the World Nobles. So that no one could distinguish those who were and weren't slaves, each member had themselves branded with their crew emblem
  • Fish People: All of the crewmembers are either Fish-men or tritons.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Twice in a row. They sacrifice their ship, built by Fisher Tiger, to trick the Big Mom Pirates into thinking they've destroyed the Thousand Sunny. It only works for a few seconds, so they all fight the much more powerful Charlotte Family to allow the Straw Hats to escape.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: After Jimbei renounces his position as a Warlord during the Paramount War, the crew is forced to reunite as an independent pirate crew and leave Fish-Man Island. Rather than just remain on the run, however, they elect to make an agreement with Big Mom and become her underlings in exchange for her protection of Fish-Man Island. While it's hardly ideal for anyone except Big Mom since it came with an Arranged Marriage with one of her daughters for Aladdin and their people being forced to give her a monthly tribute of candy, it does maintain the peace of their home and prevents slavers from swarming the place again, something that became a concern after Whitebeard, the island's original protector, died.
  • Made a Slave: Many of them used to be slaves of the Celestial Dragon who were freed by Fisher Tiger, however, they hid the slave brands with the Sun Pirates tattoo to make it impossible to tell who is a former slave and who isn't.
  • Mark of Shame: Defied. Tiger rebrands all the slaves he set free with a new symbol, thus forming the Sun Pirates. He then also marked every other member of his crew with the exact same brand, making it impossible to tell which of his crewmen had once been slaves.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: The Sun Pirates, under the command of Fisher Tiger, fight the World Government’s oppression with violence, assaulting ships to free the slaves. However, in his deathbed, Tiger admits that his actions would just lead to more violence since humans and fishmen would never get along this way.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: While they violently assault ships and Marine forces, Tiger forbids anyone to kill, so they wouldn't be on the same level as the World Government.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Arlong and his closest followers (Kuroobi and Choo) were this in the past. Macro and his pals were more like token jerkasses.
  • Token Human: Koala, among a group of Fish-men, which Tiger tried to use to motivate themselves not to kill humans and show their best for humanity.
  • Undying Loyalty: They say they'll follow Jimbei whatever choice he makes, even if it's to buy the Straw Hats some time by fighting one of the Four Emperors' crews, despite knowing they have no chance of victory.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Jimbei tried to avert this by becoming a Warlord of the Sea. The pardon he received from the World Government would allow the ex-slaves to return to Fish-Man Island. After he resigned, they had to leave, though.

    Fisher Tiger "The Great Adventurer"

Fisher Tiger "The Great Adventurer"

Voiced by: Kouji Ishii (JP), Gabe Kunda (EN)

Age: 48

Debut: Chapter 521 (Manga), Episode 415 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fisher_tiger_anime.png

"There are plenty of compassionate humans in this world! I know that! It's foolish to die and leave only hatred as a legacy! I know that! But my reason is overpowered by the demon in my heart! My very flesh refuses their blood! I cannot love humans...ever!!"
Chapter 623

A legendary Tai Snapper (a.k.a. Red Sea Bream) Fish-man and first leader of the Sun Pirates. He was known for climbing the Red Line with his bare hands, wreaking havoc on Mariejois and freeing thousands of slaves, both human and Fish-man. He later took the Fish-men with him and formed the Sun Pirates, a crew composed of former slaves and new Fish-men alike. Along with Queen Otohime, he fought for stopping the racism between Fish-men and humans with his own "methods," but bled to death because he refused a transfusion of human blood.

His first and only bounty was 230,000,000 berries.

  • Affectionate Nickname: People from the Fish-Man district affectionately call him "Big Brother Tai" because of the loyalty he inspires in them.
  • Animal Motifs: Given his name, his motif is the Tiger, reflecting both his rebellion against the Celestial Dragons and his contrast to Otohime, his pacific counterpart, who has a Dragon motif.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: In the anime, in addition to his natural charisma and heroic feats, Tiger became the leader of the Fish-Man Pirates by personally beating down all the members, including Jimbei and Arlong, in the Fish-man District who only agreed to join him afterwards.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Tiger cares for his fellows and inspires such loyalty from the members of the Fish-man district that they hold him up and affectionately refer to him as their "Big Brother Tai" a sentiment that is passed to all members of the Sun Pirates.
  • Byronic Hero: In his lifetime, Tiger fights to free slaves and stop racism against Fish-men but he's prejudiced towards humans as well. He's aware that his way of thinking is wrong and that there are good humans out there, but he cannot overcome his hatred for humans and dies because of it.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He's briefly mentioned by Boa Hancock while she reveals her past, as the men who organized a slave rebellion and freed the Gorgon Sisters from the Celestial Dragons. Nearly a hundred chapters later, Tiger postumously returns to the story playing a bigger role in Fishman Island's past alongside queen Otohime.
  • Coat Cape: Like many authority figures in One Piece, Tiger wears a pirate coat over his shoulders that makes him look even more imposing.
  • Commonality Connection: While Tiger hates humans, he quickly grows attached to Koala due to her past as a slave to the Celestial Dragons, which left the little girl traumatized. Said past is similar to his, as he was captured and made a slave as well, but revealed only in his final moments.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Tiger brands the little girl Koala, burning her flesh and making the girl scream. However, he only does it to mark over her previous Slave Brand, to drive home the point that she's free and break the terrible mental conditioning her slavers have inflicted on her.
  • Cycle of Revenge: Defied. He's well aware of how hatred is passed on, and despite his personal hatred towards humans, he made sure to treat humans and Fish-Men the same (for example, freeing all slaves from Mariejois) so as not to continue it. On his deathbed, he even states that it is not the duty of his generation to end the hatred between humans and Fish-Men, but rather the duty of future generations, by teaching them the dangers of it. His point is only reinforced by the actions of Hody Jones, who became a Fish-Man supremacist willing to kill his fellow Fish-Men and destroy Fish-Man Island to achieve his goals, all because Arlong did the exact opposite of what Tiger told him to do and taught Hody to hate humans.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: During his adventures, Tiger was captured and enslaved by World Nobles at Mariejois. As a slave Tiger was abused, tortured and humiliated by his masters, which led to his hatred of humans.
  • Death by Irony: A blood transfusion from a human could have saved him...but it was denied to him. It turns out, that's just the story his crew made up to keep his heroic image while, in truth, he hated humans too much after his enslavement to accept the one that was offered, even though he knew that there was no logical reason to refuse it.
  • Deathbed Confession: After being lethally wounded, Tiger refuses a human blood transfusion and reveals the reason behind his hatred for humans as well as his true past: he was captured and enslaved for years before getting free, and climbed the Red Line to free the other slaves because he couldn't bear to let anyone else suffer what he had. With his final words, he admits that co-existence between humans and Fish-Men is possible but he won't be able to love humans.
  • The Dreaded: The feats told about Fisher Tiger, especially when he climbed the Red Line and invaded Mariejois, and his violent assaults on Government ships make him feared across the world and among the Marines.
  • Dying Declaration of Hate: In his final moments, while recognizing that his hatred is wrong, Tiger admits that, because he was enslaved by the Celestial Dragons (who represent the worst of humanity), he simply cannot love humans. In a tragic twist of irony, said hatred leads to his death, because he refuses a human blood transfusion that would save his life.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Though he hates humans, in his rampage through the Holy Land he freed slaves of all races because he felt no one should have to suffer like that.
  • Face Death with Despair: In his dying moments, Tiger was full of regret as he admitted that, because of his experience, he was unable to love humans. He was aware that his hatred was irrational and that refusing a blood transfusion would've lead to his death.
  • Fantastic Racism: Tiger despised humans like most of his kind. Although unlike many of the Fish-man pirates who would follow him, he had a fairly nuanced view. He's aware that the whole hatred is ridiculous and that there are good humans out there like there are good Fish-men but he's just been mistreated too much for that understanding to truly reach his heart. In the end, he died because of his hatred, since he couldn't stand the idea to have human blood in his veins.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Tiger meets his demise when Koala's parents sold his location out in exchange for the Marines not kidnapping Koala again, just after he took care of the little girl and brought her back home. This betrayal destroys the last hope for Tiger to love humans and dies with a deep hatred of them.
  • Fatal Flaw: His Irrational Hatred against humans is what leads to his death because he refuses a blood transfusion with human blood. What makes it tragic is that he knows this, and tries to overcome it... but in the end, he can't and dies warning his crew about the dangers of hatred.
  • The Fettered: Unlike his subordinate Arlong, he's careful not to allow his anger at humans to overcome him because he knows it would damage his cause.
  • Foil: Fisher Tiger is a contrast to Queen Otohime. Both were Fish-men who wanted peace with humans, had a mutual respect for one another despite their difference in beliefs regarding humanity, and were assassinated. However, while All-Loving Hero Otohime wanted co-existence with humans, Byronic Hero Tiger thought it was best for humans and Fish-men to remain separate.
  • Foreshadowing: During Tiger's return, Jinbe notes he was gone a lot longer than his usual adventure. The fact that he was gone so much longer than normal hints something happened to him during his most recent adventure. This hints he was captured by the Celestial Dragons and made a slave by them.
  • Good Is Not Soft: While Tiger wants to free slaves and fights the corrupted World Government, being a pirate, his methods are very violent, in contrast to queen Otohime. His crew would assault and sink Government ships, although he forbids his men from killing anyone, and brands Koala, a young child, with the Sun Pirates' brand to hide the Celestial Dragon's one.
  • A Hero to His Hometown: The very act of attacking Mariejois and freeing the slaves held there that would forever brand him as a criminal to the rest of the world turned Fisher Tiger into the beloved hero of Fish-man Island.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: In-Universe. Fisher Tiger is described as a selfless man who fought to free slaves and died because he was denied a human blood transfusion. While he did fight the World Government and freed many slaves, Tiger was a very complex person and died because he refused to have human blood in his veins.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: In his final moments, Tiger bursts into tears, with mucus falling from his nose, while he declares that he can't love humans anymore. The way he cries underlines the sincerity of his feelings and his regrets.
  • Irrational Hatred: Played With and discussed. He has suffered under human oppression, but he's aware that not all humans are like the ones who tormented him. However, despite knowing this and acknowledging that it's unfair to the humans that are good, he still can't bring himself to overcome his hatred towards all humans and even dies as a result of refusing a lifesaving transfusion just because it would put human blood in his veins.
  • Knight Templar: Unlike Queen Otohime, Fisher Tiger is much more extremist with his fight against Fish-men's oppression and believes that humans and Fish-men cannot live together. On his deathbed, he admits that he knows good humans do exist and that they are not so different from Fish-men but he can't overcome his irrational hatred, the latter of which he deeply regrets.
  • Large and in Charge: Tiger, the first captain of the Sun Pirates, was much bigger than the already large Jinbei and Arlong, who used to be part of his crew. It visually marked his authority over the crew.
  • Malcolm Xerox: In contrast to Otohime, who is based on Martin Luther King, Fisher Tiger takes inspiration from Malcolm X. He raises a pirate crew of former Fish-man slaves and espouses their races' superiority in response to humans (and specifically the Celestial Dragon's) discrimination against them, and would violently raid Marine ships as acts of rebellion or to free slaves, although he forbids his men to kill any human. However, he is killed because his hatred of humans runs so deep that he refuses to accept treatment for a mortal injury because the only blood available for a transfusion is human blood. To really drive the point home, he is contrasted with the queen of Fish-Man Island, Otohime. While Tiger believed that the differences between humans and Fish-men are irreconcilable and they must live separately, Queen Otohime tried to encourage cooperation between the two races. Both ended up betrayed and killed for their trouble — ironically, Tiger was betrayed by humans, while Otohime was assassinated by a Fish-man who wanted to stoke anti-human racism. Fittingly enough, Tiger's played by the African-American Gabe Kunda in the Funimation dub.
  • Morality Chain: Tiger was the only one able to hold some of the more extreme members of his crew in check, like Arlong, who would have killed every human they met if it wasn't for Tiger's no-killing rule. After he died, Arlong reunited the Sun Pirates members who held the same hatred for humans under his flag and created a small pirate empire forcing humans to give them monthly taxes.
  • Morality Pet: Tiger harbors a deep hatred for humans and believes Fish-Men and humans shouldn't live together. However, he develops a soft spot for Koala, a young human girl enslaved by the Celestial Dragons and freed by the Sun Pirates, while he helps her overcome her trauma and find her way back home, hinting he may change his mind about humans. Unfortunately, the encounter with Koala's family is just a ploy to ambush him, said betrayal breaks the only chance he has to mentally reconcile with humans.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His name was Fisher "Tiger", and he's a badass adventurer.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: Tiger's sleeveless shirt was always unbuttoned, keeping his chest and the Sun Pirates Tattoo constantly on view, the former as a sign of confidence and the latter not only to indicate his status as Sun Pirates captain, but in hindsight that he hid his slave brand, and thus his past as a slave.
  • Noble Bigot: Tiger hated humans, but during his rampage in Mariejois he still freed all the slaves, both humans and Fish-men. He also refused to kill the humans that come after him, since he realized that it would only prolong the cycle of hatred.
  • One-Man Army: Simply walking in the path of a Celestial Dragon is already considered blasphemous while he scaled the multi-kilometre high sheer wall of the Red Line with his bare hands, and then he singlehandedly laid waste to the holy city of Mariejois, freeing thousands of slaves.
  • Oppose What You Suffered: After being made a slave by the Celestial Dragons, Tiger vowed to never have anyone suffer what he did and began a rebellion against the World Government, where his crew would assault ships and free their slaves. Although said experience made him resents humans, Tiger didn't make any distinction and freed slaves of all races.
  • Punny Name: His name is a nod to the Sea Bream, the fish he's based on, which is called "Tai" in Japanese.
  • Rebel Leader: In life, Fisher Tiger was the leader of the Sun Pirates, who opposed the World Government and free the slaves from the Celestial Dragons.
  • Red Baron: Fisher Tiger was known as "The Adventurer" because of his experiences and long journeys he did across the world.
  • Red Is Violent: His red skin visually communicates his violent and extreme methods to fight slavery and discrimination. It’s not a vibrant shade of red to denote that, while his actions are violent, they have good intentions.
  • I Regret Nothing: Inverted. In his final moments, Tiger regretted his hatred towards humans and wished he could have loved them so he could accept a blood transfusion and saved his life.
  • Seadog Beard: Tiger had a long beard to indicate that he went through many adventures and is an experienced pirate.
  • Shrouded in Myth: After his death, Fisher Tiger has become a legendary pirate and a symbol against humans' oppression over Fish-Men. Before appearing in his flashback, many characters talk about his incredible feats, such as climbing the Red Line with his bare hands and invading Mariejois, and how he died because he was denied a human blood transfusion. The last of these, however, is a lie fabricated by his followers to not taint his image; in truth, Tiger himself refused the blood transfusion, aware that it would cost him his life.
  • Slave Brand: In his last moments, Tiger revealed that he hadn't gone to a long journey but had been enslaved by the Celestial Dragons, meaning that he hid his slave mark under his sun tattoo, and was deeply ashamed of it.
  • Slave Liberation: He's revered as a legendary liberator of slaves and a hero to Fish-Men even long after his death. He hated slavery so much that it surpassed his racism against humans and led to him freeing slaves of all races, such as Boa Hancock and her sisters.
  • Sword and Gun: In a flashback, he's shown holding a cutlass and a pistol (along with two other swords and a bazooka) during his assault on Mariejois.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon:
    • Follwing his name, he's the "Tiger" who opposes the "Celestial Dragons".
    • Following Otohime's dragon motif, she is the "dragon" to Fisher Tiger's "tiger". She's the queen of Ryuugu Kingdom, aka "Dragon Palace Kingdom", as it took inspiration from the tale of Urashima Taro. They did not oppose each other, however, and held a mutual respect even as they disagreed on foreign policy.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Enforced this policy on his crew toward humans; they would beat them up, steal food and supplies, and even sink their ships, but killing was a no-no. He believed that doing so would provoke humans to lash out at other innocent Fish-men, who would then retaliate on innocent humans, perpetuating a Cycle of Revenge.
  • Tragic Bigot: Tiger suffered so much abuse at the hands of humans that, even though he knows intellectually that he shouldn't hold them as a species responsible for his torment, he simply "[can't] love the humans anymore". This irrational hatred is what leads to his death.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: For One Piece Film: Gold. One of the slaves he freed during his attack on Mariejois was Gild Tesoro who would go on to create the Gran Tesoro, essentially one man's private Mariejois.
  • Your Size May Vary: While portrayed as big, in most panels he doesn't look like he's twice his crewmates' size as his official height states.

    Jimbei

The helmsman of the crew and the second captain after Tiger's death. He later leaves to join the Straw Hat Pirates as their helmsman.

    Aladdin

Aladdin

Voiced by: Takashi Nagasako (JP), Brad Smeaton (EN)

Age: 46

Debut: Chapter 620 (Manga), Episode 540 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aladdin_anime_8.png

One of the Mermen slaves Fisher Tiger freed from Mariejois. He is the ship's doctor and first mate of the Sun Pirates, under Jimbei. Currently married to Charlotte Praline, one of Big Mom's daughters, which allowed the Sun Pirates to become subordinate to the Emperor.

    Wadatsumi

"Large Monk" Wadatsumi

Voiced by: Kōki Miyata (JP), Trina Nishimura (EN)

Debut: Chapter 606 (Manga), Episode 525 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wadatsumi_anime.png

A tiger blowfish Fish-man of gigantic proportions. He has a very childish personality and is naive and gullible, as shown when Zeo deceives him. Despite being (initially) a member of the nasty Flying Pirates, he's kind and gentle, as he feels really sorry when, with his clumsiness, he accidentally destroys two towns. Due to his enormous size, he's very strong and can inflate himself to become even bigger.

In his debut, he's a member of the Flying Pirates, led by Vander Decken IX. After being betrayed by his captain, he loses the will to fight, until Zeo convinces him to fight and take an energy steroid. After defeating Surume, he's taken down by Sanji and Jimbei, and exiled from Fish-Man Island.

In Jimbei's mini-adventures, the former Warlord meets Wadatsumi and helps him apologize to the inhabitants of the towns he destroyed.

During Whole Cake Island's arc, he's seen as a member of the Sun Pirates.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: 50 foot is an understatement with this guy. He's so large he can hold the Thousand Sunny in the palm of his hand. And he, just like a blowfish, can grow to become even bigger.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves the Thousand Sunny from certain destruction by replacing it with the Sun Pirates' ship.
  • Carpet of Virility: His chest and belly are really hairy.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: When inflated he's much larger and more destructive, but he cannot speak or the air will leak. As a result, his hands are busy with keeping his mouth closed while Sanji and Jimbei easily deal with him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Despite his becoming much stronger with the Energy Steroid, Sanji and Jimbei have an easy time with him.
  • The Exile: By the end of the Fish-Man Island arc, Wadatsumi goes into exile for understandably causing pain and suffering among the island's citizens. Also because his huge size makes it physically impossible to contain him in a prison.
  • Fish People: He's a large tiger blowfish Fish-man.
  • Gonk: With his small eyes, large lips and flat nose, he's really silly-looking.
  • Good Is Dumb: He's a kind-hearted individual but also easy to trick.
  • Hair Antennae: His hair forms a single antenna on the top of his head.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Wadatsumi first appears as a minor antagonist during the Fishman Island arc. He later befriends Jimbei during the latter's cover story, and ends up joining his crew. Wadatsumi next appears as an ally of the Straw Hats during the Wholecake Island arc, even saving their lives at one point. Downplayed in that he was never evil, just very dumb and easy to manipulate.
  • Inflating Body Gag: Faithful to his Fish-man type, he can inflate himself, becoming round and even larger.
  • Kill It with Fire: He's ultimately defeated by Sanji's "Hell Memories", which set the Fish-man on fire. He's also affected by the boiling seawater caused by Charlotte Oven.
  • Manchild: Despite his size, he has a really childish personality.
  • Motor Mouth: When inflated, he talks fast to prevent air from leaking.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He's really sorry to have accidentally destroyed two towns. Jimbei helps him make amends to the inhabitants.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: After eating an energy steroid, he's enraged and his eyes turn red.
  • Significant Birth Date: His birthday is February 9th, Pufferfish day, reflecting his Fish-man type.
  • Super-Strength: Given his size, it's not surprising he's strong enough to destroy entire cities.
  • Teeth Flying: Loses a tooth after Luffy punches him with a jet pistol.
  • Villainous BSoD: While not a straight-up villain, when Vander Decken IX betrays him, he begins to cry and loses the will to fight.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Appearance-wise, his voice doesn't sound like that of a gigantic Fish-man, but fits his childish personality.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He doesn't wear any shirt (given his size, it's already a miracle he has somehow found a pair of pants that fit him), but, considering his cartoonish body proportions, it borders with Fan Disservice.
  • The Worf Effect: He's defeated by Surume, but, after eating an Energy Steroid, he quickly defeats the kraken to show how much stronger he has become.
  • Yōkai: He is mistakenly referred to as an Umibōzu by Usopp.

    Charlotte Praline

Charlotte Praline

Voiced by: Yuko Tachibana (JP), Sara Ragsdale (EN)

Age: 29

Debut: Chapter 830 (Manga), Episode 790 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/charlotte_praline_anime.png

"My oh my, shouldn't you boys be a bit more worried about lil' ol' me? Shashasha!"

The 21st daughter of the Charlotte Family, a human-hammerhead shark mermaid hybrid and the youngest in a set of twins, her older sister being Prim. Praline serves as Totto Land's Minister of Design, and was arranged to marry Aladdin, the first mate of the Sun Pirates, to seal an alliance between them and the Big Mom Pirates.

  • Act of True Love: She fully intends to follow her husband Aladdin of the Sun Pirates when he decides to break away from Big Mom's crew, despite knowing that no one survived doing that. Eventually, she makes good on her intentions in Chapter 860 as she and the Sun Pirates are seen preparing to leave Totto Land, after tying Pekoms to a large rock to prevent him from squealing to Big Mom.
  • Anime Hair: Praline's hair is tied into a bun where most of it extend outwards horizontally like a hammerhead shark's head.
  • Arranged Marriage: Married Aladdin so Big Mom could seal an alliance with the Sun Pirates. There haven't been any problems so far.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Nope. Despite being a daughter of Big Mom, she's a loving wife (if a little possessive) and a nice lady overall. She even sides with her husband's crew over her own mother out of love, despite knowing the dire consequences of leaving, and helps the Straw Hats escape her pursuing siblings by singing to the sea slugs that were scouting the ocean.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Praline's bun, the pattern of her lower shark body, and her frilled clothes make her reminiscent of a noble Frenchwoman, considering exactly who she descends from...
  • Bear Hug: She does this to her husband, who's small compared to her.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: She's a lovely half-hammerhead shark mermaid who is devoted to her husband and has no loyalties to her own family, especially Big Mom. She even helps the Straw Hats escape Big Mom's children who're tracking them down by singing to the scout sea slugs in the ocean and distracting them from capturing the Thousand Sunny.
  • Big Little Sister: At 800 centimeters, Praline is the tallest among Big Mom's children, including her older siblings.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She is enraged at the thought of her husband Aladdin of the Sun Pirates leaving her alone when he decides to leave Big Mom's crew. Then she subverts it by declaring that she'll follow him and his crew over Big Mom any day which she eventually does follow through on.
  • Compelling Voice: Her song hypnotized the scout sea slugs into abandoning their posts.
  • Defector from Decadence: While she has a lot of privileges by virtue of being a daughter of a queen and Emperor, she chooses to leave them behind in Chapter 860, departing Totto Land with her husband Aladdin and the Sun Pirates despite knowing the consequences of doing so. By Chapter 884, she and the Sun Pirates cement themselves as allies by musically distracting the scouting sea slugs from capturing the Straw Hats.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In her debut episode, she scolds Aladdin on the assumption that he's abandoning her after eavesdropping on the Sun Pirates' plan to leave their alliance with Big Mom. At first, it appears she wants Aladdin and his crew to stay...but then she reveals that she'd happily choose her husband over her own mother and gives Aladdin a big hug, which embarrasses the Sun Pirates. This shows how devoted she is to those she genuinely loves, which eventually proves true when she teams up with the Sun Pirates to help the Straw Hats escape Totto Land, fully cementing her betrayal of the Charlotte Family.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: She was listening in when the Sun Pirates were talking about leaving their alliance with Big Mom, which makes her assume her husband, Aladdin, was going to leave her behind as well. This gets everyone scared...but then Praline reveals that she loves Aladdin too much to stay loyal to her mother, and wants to leave as well which she eventually does in Chapter 860.
  • Expy: Her being a (half-shark) mermaid who sings to the sea slug scouts to distract them (with Aladdin and the Sun Pirates accompanying her with musical instruments) has shades of The Little Mermaid.
  • Flower Motifs: Pink roses adorn her jacket, and roses represent love. She is very loving to her husband, Aladdin to the point of deciding to leave with the Sun Pirates when they choose to leave their alliance with Big Mom.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Episode 790 reveals her hair to be a dark blonde color. While she's one of Big Mom's daughters, she doesn't share her mother's traits at all. She sides with the Sun Pirates because her husband is one of them and ditches her biological family the first chance she gets, and later on she helps the Straw Hats escape detection by singing to the sea slug scouts in the ocean.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She's a half-hammerhead shark mermaid thanks to the gigantic human Big Mom marrying a hammerhead shark Merman.
  • Happily Married: She loves Aladdin to the point where she feels more loyal to him and his crew than her own mother, Big Mom. She decides to make good on her intentions to leave Totto Land with them, despite knowing the consequences.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: She was revealed in the One Piece Vol. 4 magazine to be the younger twin sister of Charlotte Prim, another human-Merman hybrid. It's averted as they're fraternal twins — Praline is a hammerhead shark mermaid whose hair is tied into a bun that resembles the appendages of the aforementioned animal; Prim is an octopus mermaid whose bundled hair resembles an octopus, with most of her hair tied up into a cylindrical shape with the rest hanging down in eight strands, like tentacles.
  • Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Unlike Big Mom, she is a beautiful, loving wife who's devoted to her husband (perhaps a little more so) and is quite friendly.
  • Mafia Princess: Was this by virtue of being one of Big Mom's children, hence her Arranged Marriage with Aladdin. She even leaves her birth family behind when the Sun Pirates decide to leave Big Mom's territory in Chapter 860.
  • May–December Romance: Her age is at 29 years, while her husband, Aladdin, is two decades older than her at 46 years. Despite this, they are Happily Married.
  • Meaningful Name: Praline is named after a confection that contains nuts and sugar; while she's ultimately a good person, she can be a little nutty (pun intended) and possessive when it comes to her husband Aladdin of the Sun Pirates (though she's more loyal to him than her mother Big Mom). Alternatively, her name takes after the "Pralinières", young women who were also called "casket girls" due to them carrying all their belongings in small jewelry boxes. These women were also candy-makers who were taught lessons that would allow them to marry higher than their station. Praline herself, despite her mother being a pirate, is of high birth due to Big Mom's "Emperor" status and global affluence.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Praline wears an open, frilled, rose-themed jacket and nothing else underneath.
  • Retcon: When Praline was first introduced in Chapter 830, it was mentioned that she's Big Mom's 29th daughter. It was changed to being the 21st in Volume 87 when Volume 86 mentions that Joscarpone is the 29th daughter.
  • Scary Teeth: She has shark teeth due to being a hammerhead shark mermaid, but it's subverted as it doesn't detract from her beauty, and she's a good person despite being one of Big Mom's daughters.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: With her husband, Aladdin; when she embraced him and declared that she'll follow him to the ends of the earth, the other Fish-men were seen blushing heavily and covering their faces in embarrassment.
  • Signature Laugh: "Shashasha".
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She hasn't appeared in enough pages to constitute a single chapter, but she plays a pivotal role in helping the various enemies of Big Mom escape by removing the sea slug scouts.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's the only female member of the Sun Pirates.
  • Statuesque Stunner: At 26'3", she's technically the tallest child of Big Mom though that's largely due to having a long, mermaid body. In any case, she's a very large, yet physically attractive mermaid that dwarfs her husband and most of the members of his pirate crew.
  • Threatening Shark: Subverted; despite being a (half) hammerhead shark mermaid, she's actually quite lovely. She even helps the Sun Pirates tend to Pekoms' injuries after he is shot over the edge of a cliff by Capone Bege and helps the Straw Hats escape Whole Cake Island by singing to the sea slugs that scout for Big Mom in the ocean.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: She dwarfs in size her husband, Aladdin, despite him being already pretty big.
  • Token Good Teammate: She at least suggested that she'll follow her husband more than her own mom anytime. That eventually comes true, with her supporting Aladdin and the Sun Pirates' decision of betraying Big Mom. She later cements herself as a trusted ally of the Straw Hats by distracting the sea slugs from detecting their escape with her singing.
  • True Blue Femininity: Aside from her shark-like teeth, she's very feminine and her clothes have a blue color scheme, as she wears a blue jacket and blue frills.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Scary Teeth aside, Praline's quite attractive-looking. The same could not be said about her mother.
  • White Sheep: To the audience, she looks like one due to her nice (if slightly clingy) personality and the fact that her loyalties lie with her husband, Aladdin, and the Sun Pirates, rather than her own mother, Big Mom.
  • Youthful Freckles: Praline has lots of facial freckles, and looks quite lovely compared to her mother.

Arlong Pirates

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arlong_flagge.png

A crew composed of Fish-Men and in effect a splinter crew of the Sun Pirates, once under the rule of Fisher Tiger and later Jimbei. This small portion of the crew was led by Arlong who settled in the East Blue in order to start an empire of Fish-men. The most important members include Momoo the Sea Cow, Kuroobi the Manta Ray Fish-Man and Choo, an Archerfish Fish-man. To keep the heat off them, they regularly bribe a corrupt Marine Captain named Nezumi. They are the main antagonists of the Arlong Park Arc.

The crew is subsequently defeated by the Straw Hats and scattered, either arrested or free.

  • Almighty Janitor: While Arlong is the most blatant, having a bounty much lower than it should be, the entire crew is not considered much by the Marines despite being formed by Fish-Men who have traversed the Grand Line with the likes of Fisher Tiger and one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Jimbei. While there are many reasons for this, the main reasons why the crew's collective bounty isn't higher is because they're deliberately keeping a low profile to avoid Jimbei's attention and because Arlong is bribing the Marines in the immediate area to ignore his rule over Coco and the surrounding villages. The general reputation of the East Blue as "the weakest sea" also likely plays a part, with the Marines not wanting to incite panic among the populace by making them aware they have such a powerful pirate in their midst.
  • Badass Crew: Being Fish-Men, they are pretty damn strong; on average, their race is ten times stronger than humans, and even more so underwater.
  • The Cameo:
    • They make a cameo in Hatchan's mini-arc and in a flashback on Sabaody. Momoo is seen with the Caribou Pirates and has a nasty shock as he recognized Luffy and Sanji.
    • They have a more extensive one during the Fish-Man Island arc flashbacks, which is more-or-less their Start of Darkness.
  • Dub Name Change: With the exception of Arlong himself, his three officers were given different names in Germany, albeit with identical meanings.
  • Fantastic Racism: All of them share Arlong's hatred of humans and believe to be superior just because of their Fish-Men traits. This makes their defeat at the hands of the Straw-Hats, who during the Arlong Park Arc is comprised exclusively of humans, much more ironic. The only exception is Hachi, who probably just followed Arlong on a whim; Nami even admits he isn't as bad as the others, and eventually comes to forgive him after he shows that his Heel–Face Turn is genuine.
  • Jerkass: With the exception of Hachi, the whole crew is made up by racist fishmen.
  • Moral Myopia: They kill, blackmail and enslave humans because it is their "divine right". If a human hurts them, it's unforgivable. They (un)knowingly act like Celestial Dragons.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: They're a Grand Line-level pirate crew in the middle of the East Blue, the weakest sea in the world. Prior to the rise of the Straw Hats, they are unquestionably the strongest pirate crew in the eastern seas. Even the Pirate Armada wouldn't have been able to match them despite the severe numbers-advantage, especially if the battle was on the ocean, and especially after Mihawk trounced their crew and left a mere fraction of the original armada left for survivors. A later arc reveals this was deliberate. Any aspirations Arlong had of growing stronger and dominating the Grand Line died after Vice-Admiral Borsalino (the future Admiral Kizaru) crushed him in battle when he tried to avenge Tiger's death, and any attempts to subjugate and terrorize humans in that stretch of sea would catch Jimbei's attention, who would kill all of them for spurning Tiger and Queen Otohime's last wishes and dreams. So, Arlong slunk off to the East Blue instead and tried his luck there. It's also deconstructed because it's all but stated that years of lounging around in the East Blue made them weaker, which is one of the reasons the Straw Hats were able to take them down.
  • Oh, Crap!: Momoo, whenever he meets the Straw Hats...or is threatened by Arlong.
  • The Psycho Rangers: For the Arlong Park arc, the major officers in the crew serve as this for the Straw Hats. Arlong is the Big Bad and loses to Luffy, Hachi is The Dragon and defeated by Zoro, Kuroobi is The Brute and is beaten by Sanji, and Choo is a Cold Sniper and is defeated by Usopp. Mohmoo acts as the Team Pet.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: The Arlong Pirates are taken into Marine custody once the Straw Hat Pirates free the Conomi Islands from Arlong's grasp and never reappear in the story, not even when Luffy infiltrates Impel Down. The only one to escape from custody is Hatchan, who gets his own Mini-Adventure and meets the Straw Hats again at Sabaody Archipelago.
  • Species Loyalty: They, especially Arlong, are really against hurting each other.
  • Take Over the World: They claim their ultimate goal is to take over the East Blue, and intend to use Nami's sea charts to achieve that. That is why Arlong is furious when Luffy begins destroying Nami's room and the charts within at the end of their fight because Luffy is also destroying Arlong's ambitions by doing so.
  • Technical Pacifist: Used to be this when the crew was part of the Sun Pirates.
  • Undying Loyalty: They are loyal to Arlong above all else. After Tiger died, they split off from the main group because Arlong left.
  • Villainous Legacy: They are defeated early in the series at the end of the East Blue saga, but their legacy remains in the New Fish-Man Pirates, the first major antagonists after the Time Skip. Hody and his crew are the direct byproduct of the Arlong Pirates' racist rhetoric (especially Arlong's), a band of virulent racists willing to do anything, including harming their own kind, to achieve Fish-Man supremacy. Worse, they seek to take things even farther than their predecessors did by conquering the entire human race.
  • We Have Become Complacent: The Arlong Pirates go unchallenged for eight years because they made sure that no one strong enough to take them down was sent after them by keeping their actions on a down low outside of the East Blue. This leads to several of them, including their top officers, believing they are actually invincible and that no one had a chance at beating them, causing them to underestimate the Straw Hats, which leads to their defeat.
  • We Were Your Team: The Sun Pirates split up after the death of their leader. Arlong refused to follow Jimbei's more pacific approach and made his own crew with the Sun Pirates that followed his ideology.

"Trying to oppose the Fish-men is like going against nature itself!"

"Saw-Tooth" Arlong is a Sawshark Fish-man (a species of humanoid fish), the captain of the Arlong Pirates, hugely racist towards humans. He was a former member of the Sun Pirates, but after their captain, Jimbei became one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he broke off, taking his former crew with him, and searched for easy targets in the relatively tame East Blue. There, he and his crew enslaved Nami's home island and forced her to work for them as a cartographer, after killing her surrogate mother Belle-Mère. With her cartography skills and his connections with the Marines allowing him to operate under the radar, Arlong's plan was to turn the East Blue into his own personal empire.

Arlong and the rest of his crew are imprisoned after the Straw Hats put an end to his reign. Hachi is the only one to escape while Arlong's fate remains unknown.

Prior to his capture, his bounty is 20,000,000 Berries, the highest of all of the East Blue before Luffy defeats him.

  • Abnormal Dental Growth: As a shark fish-man, Arlong can regrow his teeth in a matter of seconds and use the discarded rows of teeth as weapons.
  • Always Someone Better: While Arlong talks a big game, he's a pushover compared to Jimbei who takes Arlong's punches without even flinching, then knocks the guy out in only a few hits.
  • Arch-Enemy: Arlong is Nami's most personal enemy, for killing her mother, enslaving her village, and forcing her to join his crew in order to buy her home back. While Nami comes to forgive and befriend Hachi, one of Arlong's former subordinates, and Jimbei, the one who is indirectly responsible for letting Arlong loose in the East Blue in the first place, she makes it clear that she will never forgive Arlong.
  • Arc Villain: Arlong is the main antagonist of the titular Arlong Park arc. He's responsible for Nami's tragic past, having killed her mother and holding Coco Village hostage.
  • Benevolent Boss: As horrible as he is to humans, Arlong genuinely cares for his crew and is horrified when Zoro slaughters them or when Luffy uses one of his men as a human shield.
  • BFS: His Shark Saw sword (kiribachi) is about as big as he is, complete with a Serrated Blade of Pain.
  • Big Brother Worship: He used to look up to Jimbei and Tiger since he grew up with them. Even when Jimbei was being rude to him, Arlong showed nothing but admiration towards him, until Tiger died and their friendship fell apart.
  • The Bully: He turned into this after Borsalino and later Jimbei whooped his ass — the minute that Arlong knew how outclassed he was, he decided to set up shop in the East Blue so he could freely throw his weight around.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Turns out that his ambition becomes this in the worst possible way — there's an entire Fish-Man crew that agrees with his world view on Fish-Man Island, and they're shaping up to be fine villains themselves. At least, until they get beaten by Luffy and the Straw Hats and suffer a Karmic Transformation...
  • Climax Boss: Of the East Blue saga. He's Nami's Arch-Enemy and the primary driving force of many of her actions since she first met Luffy and Zoro, and he's also the strongest pirate in the East Blue. On top of giving Luffy a more difficult fight than any other previous antagonist, his defeat causes Luffy to receive his first bounty and fully establishes the Straw Hats as the strongest pirate crew in their home sea, signaling that there's nothing left for them to do there and that they're ready to enter the Grand Line.
  • Dirty Coward: At the end of the day, Arlong is a craven racist bully who, after getting pulverized first by Borsalino and then by Jimbei later on, realizes how outclassed he is, and decides to run to the East Blue to set up shop because he knows the chances of anyone being able to pose a threat to him there are slim to none. Rather than put in the hard work to get stronger so he won't lose again and achieve his ambitions in the Grand Line where it would actually matter, he just takes the easy way out and lives them out in the One Piece equivalent of a backwater.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: After his captain, Fisher Tiger, refused a blood transfusion out of his sheer self-loathing inner hatred of humanity in his final moments, Arlong decided to make every human's life a living hell, starting with a village that had nothing to do with the racial discrimination, all For the Evulz and out of spite.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: His friendship with Jimbei fell apart due to Arlong refusing to listen to Tiger's dying wish for peace between humans and Fish-men. Jimbei decided to follow that wish and became a Warlord so that Sun Pirates could go home to their families, but Arlong saw that as Jimbei cowardly serving the government that murdered Tiger and vowed to start a race war against humans. Jimbei didn't take kindly to this and would've beat him to death had he not had brotherly affection for Arlong.
  • Dub Personality Change: He's more Faux Affably Evil in the 4Kids dub, with many of his lines delivered in a more cheerful tone and him occasionally cracking jokes. Hachi/Hatchan became "Okta" (and female for a time), Kuroobi became "Schwarzgurt" and Choo became "Kiss".
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: While he and Tiger could never see eye to eye, Arlong still loved him like a brother, and was just as devastated by Tiger's death as the rest of his crew.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Back when Arlong and Jimbei were younger and both in the Sun Pirates, the latter's brutality when fighting the Marines or other opponents was sometimes so harsh that Arlong himself would tell him to stop. The dynamics have reversed since then, with Arlong becoming violently hateful of humans while Jimbei is more tolerant towards them (to the point that he eventually joins a mostly-human crew of his own free will — ironically, the very same crew that defeated Arlong and ended his reign of terror).
    • While he was still a jackass towards Koala, even he was still disgusted by the torment the Celestial Dragons put her through as their slave, Arlong looking disturbed as she'd compulsively clean her own bleeding nose from a ship deck.
    • Arlong draws the line at harming his fellow Fish-Men, even if they don't agree with his racist beliefs. Notably, that's one standard that Hody Jones does not have, which is one of the reasons both Hachi and Jimbei consider him far worse than Arlong.
    • Discussed when talking about his deal with Nami with his crew, with him insisting he intended to honor it, with them talking him out of it. While its possible he was being sincere, his attitude when confronted about it later implies he was being coy the entire time.
  • Evil Laugh: "Sha-ha-ha-ha!"
  • Exact Words: Nami makes a deal with him to serve as his cartographer until such time as she can scrape together 100 million Berries. He never said he wouldn't tell the Marines where her stash was when she's only 7 million away.
  • Fatal Flaw: Arlong has two flaws that lead to his defeat:
    • Wrath. The prejudice toward fish-men by humans led him to become angry and cruel as an adult, and his excessive temper keeps getting in the way of his own ambitions, such as when he returned to Foolshout Island after Tiger's death hoping to go on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge only to get his ass kicked by Vice-Admiral Borsalino.
    • Cruelty. His cruelty to Nami is what leads to his defeat because she befriends one of the few people in the East Blue capable of defeating Arlong: Luffy. Once his cruelty finally becomes too much for her, she asks Luffy for help, who doesn't hesitate to invade Arlong Park with the rest of the crew to kick Arlong's ass.
  • A Father to His Men: Despite being a General Ripper to humans, he is as attached to his True Companions as Luffy is to his own, thus his only Pet the Dog moment. Because of that, he takes at least four different levels of Unstoppable Rage, each for his three defeated Elite Mooks and one when Luffy uses a fallen Mook as a shield to his bite attack.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Zigzagged between this and Affably Evil. He seems like a cool guy to hang around with, as long as you're not human. Even if you are a human, he pretends to act nice before ripping you to shreds. However, while he possesses a strong contempt for humans, he deeply respects and cares for his crew.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Arlong lived out his childhood in the worse parts of Fish-Man Island and sometimes went to the surface overlooking Sabaody Park with his friends, developing an admiration/envy of human life. As an adult, he modeled his Arlong Park headquarters after the Sabaody Park, implying that a part of him wanted to be human. This makes his racist beliefs come off more like bitter rationalizations meant to compensate for his desire for a lifestyle he could never have because of his race. While it would seem like the discrimination and slavery his people suffered was also a major factor, it's important to note that Arlong himself never experienced any of it firsthand and his former captain Tiger died only because Tiger would not accept the blood of a human — which Tiger himself admitted was wrong. In spite of this though, Arlong became a Fish-Man supremacist waging a "holy war" towards humans. Despite being part of a marginalized group, the way Arlong turned out is largely his own doing and many characters, including his former crewmates Jimbei and Hatchan openly acknowledge that he didn't have any valid excuse to take his anger out on a group of innocent humans. Even after learning about Arlong's past, Nami refuses to forgive him, and Jimbei admits that if he had known what Arlong was doing in the East Blue, he would've killed him.
  • The Fundamentalist: Arlong has a deep hatred for humans and, in a flashback, he tells a young Hody Jones that a "holy war" is being waged between the Fish-Men and humans, making him one of the main causes of the Fish-Man Island arc.
  • Furry Reminder: Like an actual sawfish, Arlong can grow a new set of teeth to replace the previous ones when he breaks them.
  • Gone Horribly Right: By inspiring Hody Jones to follow in his footsteps as a violent, human-hating Fish-Man supremacist, Arlong is indirectly responsible for all the trouble Hody causes, up to and including the near-destruction of his home and the near-usurpation of the royal family (as well as the assassination of Queen Otohime). One of the few standards Arlong keeps is not harming his fellow Fish-Men unless provoked first, while Hody attacks even other Fish-men if they don't support his cause, including Arlong's younger sister, Madam Sharley.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Flashback sequences in the Fish-Man Island Arc reveal how he spread of the rumor that Tiger died being denied a blood transfusion, which added fuel to the prejudice Fish-Men have with humans. He also influenced Hody Jones and his friends to embrace hating humans at the expense of everything else, being indirectly responsible for the birth of the New Fish-Man Pirates.
  • Greed: For all his racist rhetoric, it gradually becomes clear that Arlong values money more than his beliefs; otherwise, he would've done a lot worse to the islands under his eight-year control besides extortion and would've never tolerated Nezumi and Nami as much as he did. Terrorizing humans is more of a side-benefit than an actual motive. As proof, it's later revealed that one of the reasons why Hyouzou (an unapologetic mercenary) didn't join Arlong when he went to the East Blue is because Arlong was too tight with his wallet and wasn't willing to pay Hyouzou much, if at all, to come with him. That's why Hyouzou became Hody's subordinate instead — Hody doesn't care about money and so was willing to pay the other Fish-Man as much as he wanted for his services.
  • Hellish Pupils: When his rage hits the breaking point, his pupils and irises become narrow slits, emulating the eyes of a Sea King.
  • Hidden Depths: Arlong, at heart, is a coward who doesn't really believe a lot of his racist rhetoric. After facing the overwhelming power of one of the real top dogs of the world in Borsalino and being confronted with the sheer power difference between himself and Jimbei, he decided to run away to the weakest sea on the planet instead of growing stronger to fulfill his ambitions in the Grand Line, where accomplishing them would actually mean something. All his plans were centered on East Blue, with not a hint of him ever turning his attentions back to the Grand Line, because he was too scared to try and measure up to the real monsters there. This deeply contrasts the arrogant, racist front he puts up in front of his crew and the people he enslaves, likely as a way of compensating for his personal inadequacies.
  • Hypocrite: While Arlong's hatred of humans is legitimate, his belief that Fish-Men are the superior race to humans is proven fraudulent in the Fish-Man Island arc after it's revealed that one of the reasons why Arlong ran off to the East Blue is because he got his ass kicked by the very human Borsalino (the future Admiral Kizaru), an experience that scarred him and left him too scared to try and measure up to the (similarly human) monsters that live in the Grand Line. He still espouses it during his time in the East Blue anyway for the sake of his ego, and it's an easy idea for him to feed to both his subordinates and victims when he's living in the weakest sea in the world, where there is little to no suitable opposition capable of stopping him.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: His eyes are light blue, which reinforces his connection with the sea (being a Fish-Man) and cold and calculating mind.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Getting destroyed by Borsalino and Jimbei in separate fights made him aware of the gulf in power between him and the world's heavy hitters. Rather than using that as an impetus to put in the work to become stronger, he showed himself for the Dirty Coward that he was and ran to the East Blue, where he knew that the opposition would be far weaker and he could stay off the World Government's radar enough to not get a Captain or better sent out to deal with him.
  • I Have Your Wife: This is how he holds Nami in his grasp. He'll free the villages from his reign of terror if she pays him 100 million berries, but she'd better work fast to earn that money since he won't stop punishing the villagers if they fail to pay his taxes.
  • Inappropriate Role Model: To Hody Jones, who idolized him growing up. Arlong is essentially the main reason why Hody and his friends turned out the way they did, and before Arlong was defeated by Luffy, Hody intended to eventually become his right-hand (Fish) man. While Hody eventually grew out of his admiration for Arlong (mostly because Arlong failed to achieve any of his ambitions), there's no question about the influence the older Fish-Man had over him.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Implied during the flashbacks of the Fish-Man Island arc. He constantly boasts about his superiority and the superiority of Fish-men in general during the East Blue saga, while the flashbacks reveal he got his ass kicked by the human Borsalino and his "brother" Jimbei and was forced to flee to the weakest sea in the world to find any sort of personal success.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: During the Sun Pirates' time with Koala, Arlong states that her parents probably hate Fish-men and later adds that them bringing her back won't make the villagers stop hating them. He was right.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: After eight years of killing innocent people, enslaving villages and threatening humans, Arlong finally gets what's coming to him at the conclusion of the Straw Hats' battle with the Arlong Pirates.
  • Kill Me Now, or Forever Stay Your Hand: After Arlong is released from prison, thanks to Jimbei becoming a Warlord, an unimpressed Arlong decides to break away from the Sun Pirates and lead his own crew again, promising to spread the hatred of the Fish-men for humans wherever he goes and goads Jimbei to kill him where he stands if he has a problem with it. Frustrated that Tiger's last wishes were going to waste, Jimbei savagely beats him, but he stops at the last moment, as he could never bring himself to kill his own "brother".
  • Large and in Charge: He's a large Fish-Man who's the captain of the Arlong Pirates. When he stands up during his crew's battle with the Straw Hats, he's noticeably taller than his underlings and dwarves Luffy.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He breaks the deal he made with Nami to let her buy back her village from him by tipping off the Marines to her secret stash just as she was about to reach her goal. This leads to Nami begging Luffy for help, which promptly leads to Arlong losing everything instead of just Nami and Coco after the rest of the Straw Hats invade Arlong Park and kick the asses of him and his crew.
  • Make an Example of Them: He murders Belle-Mère to show the villagers what happens if they don't pay up for his tax.
  • Making a Splash: Due to his strength, he can throw water drops with the force of a shotgun blast.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: He's a Grand Line-level pirate who decided to set up shop in the East Blue (and plotted to take it over). This was deliberate. Arlong got a taste of what a real big fish in the Grand Line was when Vice-Admiral Borsalino (the future Admiral Kizaru) chewed him up and spit him out when he tried to avenge Tiger's death, and then Jimbei gave him a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. Realizing he'd never be able to measure up and wanting to avoid Jimbei's attention, Arlong all but fled to East Blue with his loyalists and tried to live out his ambitions there instead, knowing that the Marines present would either be too weak or too corruptible to stop him. It's also a deconstructed example because it's heavily implied that Arlong spending so much time squatting in East Blue actually made him weaker because he didn't have sufficient opposition to keep in shape.
  • Not So Similar: With his "successor", Hody Jones. They're both Fish-Man supremacists who seek to subjugate humanity, with Arlong even serving as a role model and inspiration to Hody. They both also grew up in the Fish-Man District, where a lot of their racism is rooted in. However, as the Fish-Man Island arc goes on, the differences between them become much clearer. Arlong genuinely loves his crew, refuses to harm his fellow Fish-Men (even if they don't agree with his beliefs), and ultimately is willing to compromise his racism for the sake of his greed. Hody doesn't give a damn about his crew and is willing to do anything to achieve his goals of Fish-Man supremacy, even if it means shedding the blood of his fellow Fish-Men, and caring for nothing else but his hatred. A big reason for these differences is that Arlong has legitimate reasons for his racism, having seen the worst of humanity during his time on the Sun Pirates (up to and including the death of Fisher Tiger at the hands of humans), whereas Hody simply hates humans because that was all he was ever taught to do. Thus, Arlong is an actual person with other motivations besides hating humans, while Hody is nothing more than a vessel of empty hatred.
  • Now That's Using Your Teeth!: Arlong can chew a cannonball — one that's been fired — to bits with no effort. His moniker in the VIZ translated manga is "Saw-Tooth". And even if you manage to break his teeth, he can just grow a new set because of his shark heritage. During his fight with Luffy, however, he explains that it's really the strength of his jaws that allows him to bite through steel and metal. As proof, Luffy put Arlong's detached teeth in his jaw and bit Arlong with it, but he wasn't harmed that much.
  • Oh, Crap!: Arlong's reaction when he sees Zoro's wound. Not because of the wound itself, but because he realized that if someone can walk and fight with a wound like that, that someone will become very dangerous in the future.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Enforced. Normally, Arlong has no issues getting into the action immediately, but when the Straw Hat Pirates arrive to fight the Arlong Pirates and Luffy wrecks their remaining subordinates with Momoo, the officers ask him to sit by and let them handle the Straw Hats because they fear that Arlong would end up destroying Arlong Park in rampage. Once Arlong starts participating in the fight, he does indeed start a rampage that destroys a good chunk of his park.
  • Pet the Dog: While Arlong is a vicious and racist Fishman who despises humans and holds entire islands hostage, forced to pay him every month, he does care for his crew and is horrified when he finds his entire crew beaten by Zoro.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Arlong is a horrifically brutal and sadistic racist and Fish-man supremacist who sees nothing wrong with enslaving entire human villages and murdering anyone who doesn't pay absurdly high taxes.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Arlong is willing to put his racism towards humans aside for profit and prefers bribing corrupt Marines over attacking them.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Arlong utters "Die for your foolish love!" just before he shoots Belle-Mère at point-blank range.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Arlong costantly boasts about the strength of the Fish-Men race and his presumed superiority over the humans. At the same time, he's a fierce fighter and a dangerous pirate.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Both Arlong and Jimbei were still pretty violent in the original Sun Pirates crew though ironically, Arlong was the calmer one and gradually got worse, while Jimbei was the exact opposite.
  • Sadist: He laughs at Nami's misery after he breaks his promise to her. He then brags to his crew about he would keep Nami under his control for the rest of his life.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: He bribes Marines to keep his operations in the East Blue low-profile, and believes that money is the lifeblood of the world. This is also, among a few other things, one thing that sets him apart from Hody Jones: Arlong, while thinking that humans are worthless scums, only uses his racist motive for getting money; Hody goes to the next level and becomes an actual Fish-man supremacist who will kill his own kin if they happen to help humans.
  • Serrated Blade of Pain: His main weapon, the Shark Saw (kiribachi) is a pole with huge teeth set into it, similar to a sawtooth shark.
  • Shark Fin of Doom: During his fight with Luffy, he decides to build up speed underwater for his Shark on Darts attack, briefly leaving his dorsal fin visible before diving. Luffy actually believes that it's just some random shark before Usopp corrects him.
  • Shark Man: Arlong is Sawshark type of Fish-man, which gives him a pointy saw-like nose and sharp teeth.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: A ton of his dialogue is nothing but him going on and on about how Fish-Men are superior to pathetic, puny humans, especially in his back-and-forth with Luffy during their fight, to the point that one of Luffy's most defiant things during said fight is simply telling him to shut up about it.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He's a cruel and sadistic Fishman, while his younger half-sister Shyarly is a kind mermaid.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: When Koala left for her village, he broke the Sun Pirates' mood by saying that she would grow to hate Fish-Men as any other human. He turns out to be wrong.
  • Sinister Schnoz: He is a Sawshark Fish-Man, giving him a sharp nose that adds points to his villainous design. It's hard enough to resist Zoro's blade (albeit while he's heavily injured), though Luffy manages to break it with his bare hands.
  • Slasher Smile: Arlong is an evil Sawshark Fish-man with a wicked smile of sharp teeth.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Arlong honestly thinks he "is the rage of all the Fish-men" and can Take Over the World just by being a Fish-man squatting in the weakest sea. Later arcs make it clear most Fish-men don't really care for his ideals, and many of them are much stronger to boot; Jimbei gave him a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown after he announced his desire to continue terrorizing humans after Tiger told him not to with his dying breath. Arlong was scarred by his near-death experience at the hands of a fellow Fish-man and ran off to East Blue mostly to avoid attracting Jimbei's attention. The other reason is because he knew he couldn't hack it in the Grand Line after he got his ass handed to him by Borsalino.
  • Super-Strength: A Fish-man is, on average, ten times stronger than the average human, but Arlong is even stronger than the average Fish-man and when a family can't pay the loan, Arlong lifts their house and turns it upside down.
  • Take Over the World: His primary goal is to take over the East Blue — likely because it's the weakest sea and therefore the only place he has any chance of taking over.
  • Thin Chin of Sin: Arlong has a long, triangle-shaped jaw, which adds points to his design and visually communicates that he's a brute.
  • Threatening Shark: Arlong is a sawshark fish-man, his fish trait adds points to his design, making clear from a first glance that he's a vicious pirate.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Arlong was one of the cruelest members of the Sun Pirates. While there were some other unsavory characters in the group, he was always the first to suggest violent terrorism toward humans. He was even about to kill a slave just for being a human asking them to send her home.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: One of the conditions Jimbei had for becoming a Warlord was Arlong's release from Impel Down. Arlong decides to repay this by spitting in Jimbei's face, calling him a coward for not wanting revenge against all humans, and then running off to East Blue after Jimbei spared him from his wrath out of brotherly affection to hide from his attention.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Like an actual shark, when truly pissed off, Arlong goes into a berserk state and his attacks become more vicious.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He, Jimbei, and Tiger grew up together in the Fish-man District and were basically blood brothers. Alas, the friendship died off with Tiger himself, as Jimbei decided to heed Tiger's dying wish to seek peace with humans, while Arlong wanted to make them pay for killing Tiger. The argument ended in a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown in Jimbei's favor, and they never saw each other again after that day.
  • You Are a Credit to Your Race: Arlong shares a respect for the corrupt Marine captain Nezumi for their mutual love for money and considers Nami the only exception to the humans, although the latter is only an object to him.

A Smelt-Whiting Fish-man and an officer of the Arlong Pirates, he's the most cool headed member, and only loses his temper after Usopp annoys him during their battle.

Like the fish he's based on, he has the ability to spit water projectiles from his mouth, making him a fitting opponent for Usopp.

He has a bounty of 5,500,000 berries.

  • Blush Stickers: He has pink dots on his cheeks, but in this case they don't make him look any cuter.
  • Cold Sniper: True to his fish type, he can spit water from his mouth, and he's the sniper of the Arlong Pirates. He's also more cool-headed than his fellow members.
  • Dub Name Change: In Germany, he's called "Kiss", which isn't far off from his original name.
  • Furry Reminder: Like an actual archerfish, Choo is able to spit water projectiles from his mouth.
  • Gag Lips: Has a protruding mouth (with very large lips) which can spit water. It's also a Visual Pun on his fish-type Japanese name (Kisu also means "kiss"), since his lips resemble those of a kissing mouth.
  • Gatling Good: When gets angry enough, he can shoot water bullets like a machine gun.
  • Kill It with Fire: How he is defeated. Usopp launches alcoholic sake at him, splattering his body with alcohol and then igniting the liquid, whacking him with a hammer and rubber band until he passes out.
  • Making a Splash: Choo can shoot water bullets out of his huge lips.
  • Punny Name: Choo is the sound of kissing. He's a smelt-whiting Fish-man with huge lips.
  • Super Spit: His specialty is spitting out shots of water. Fitting for a smelt-whiting Fish-man.
  • Underestimating Badassery: His arrogant personality makes him underestimate Usopp when he chases him. This causes Choo to lose his temper and ultimately lose to him.

    Kuroobi

Kuroobi

Voiced by: Hisao Egawa (JP), Brian Zimmerman (EN, Odex), Sean Schemmel (EN, 4Kids), Patrick Seitz (EN, Funi), Salvador Reyes (Latin Spanish Dub)

Age: 36 (Pre-Timeskip), 38 (Post-Timeskip)

Debut: Chapter 69 (Manga), Episode 31 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kuroobi_anime.png

A Ray Fish-man and an officer of the Arlong Pirates and the most arrogant and cruel member. He's the only one to not completely trust Nami, and proves to be right.

He's a master of Fish-man Karate, a fighting style practiced only by Fish-men.

He has a bounty of 9,000,000 berries.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Aside of being a literal (Fish-man) karateka, he's very confident of his abilities and looks down on humans, but Sanji gives him a good lesson.
  • Combat Pragmatist: As Sanji dives underwater to rescue Luffy, Kuroobi follows to fight him where he has a clear advantage. He drags Sanji to the bottom of the pool, knowing the sudden change in pressure would damage the human. However, Sanji breathes air into Kuroobi's gills, forcing the latter to resurface.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: At first is on the giving end against Sanji when the two are fighting underwater, but once the fight is moved out of water, the situation is reversed and Sanji defeats Kuroobi quickly.
  • Dub Name Change: In Germany, he's called "Schwarzgurt", which is a literal translation of his name ("black belt").
  • Jerkass: With the exception of Hachi, all of the Arlong Pirates are really unpleasant, but special mention goes to Kuroobi who takes great pleasure in hurting the others, either slashing Genzo for attempting to defend Nami, or trying to give Sanji the most painful death possible. The latter comes back to bite him in the ass.
  • Logical Weakness: Sanji works out that Fish-men have two respiratory systems in order to live amphibiously, and that they must switch between them when going from sea to land. Therefore, while they're underwater their gills must work the same as a fish's. He then exploits this while Kuroobi is drowning him by blowing air into his gills, asphyxiating him and getting him to release his grip. This moves the battle out of water, annulling Kuroobi' field advantage.
  • Meaningful Name: Kuroobi means Black Belt, fitting for a practitioner of Fish-man Karate.
  • Properly Paranoid: He doesn't like or trust Nami, suspecting that she's planning on betraying them. She has no true loyalty to Arlong, and, according to him, tried to have him killed on multiple occasions. She even helps Zoro and Usopp escape from Arlong, faking the latter's death.
  • Sinister Stingrays: Kuroobi is a ray fish-man and an evil pirate who firmly believes in fish-men superiority. His ray attributes, specifically the fins on his forearms, are triangular, giving his design more edge that communicates danger.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Mocks Sanji saying he's too weak to defend Nami, only to be on the receiving end of a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown at the end of the fight.
  • You Are a Credit to Your Race: Despite his racism against humans, he compliments Sanji for his strength, then mocks his willingness to fight for Nami, calling it a waste.

Macro Pirates

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/macro_pirates_portrait_8.png

A Trio of Fish-men kidnappers briefly allies with the Flying Fish Riders.

  • Black Sheep: Macro was among the big brothers (dubbed the cruelest) of the Fish-Man District, which included Tiger, Jimbei and Arlong. You know you are a Black Sheep when Arlong is better than you morally.
  • Brutal Honesty: Tansui and Gyaro often remarks that Duval is a oaf and similar stuff. Macro usually call them out on this.
  • Guns Akimbo: Macro's main weapons during his days as a Sun Pirate.
  • Ignored Epiphany: They saw firsthand the unspeakably horrible trauma inflicted upon slaves when they were part of the Sun Pirates, including their beloved late captain, Fisher Tiger, but that didn't stop them from going back to being slave traders after his death.
  • Informed Ability: Macro, Tansui and Gyaro all brag about their skills (strength, Fish-men karate and fencing style) before being one-shotted by Hacchan's Takoyaki Punch attack.
  • Jerkass: Macro isn't quite a Complete Monster (mostly because he's so minor in the grand scheme of things), but the fact that he used to be a Fish-Man Pirate and is involved in the slave trade before and after joining the Sun Pirates, something his former captain Tiger hated, is quite low.
  • Making a Splash: Tansui is apparently a Fish-Man Karateka. Probably not a good one, though.
  • Master Swordsman: Subverted with a ton of bricks. Gyaro thinks he is with his Goldfish Fencing style, but isn't even close to being in Hatchi's league.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: The trio had ties to a kidnapping ring under Duval, and personally attempted to kidnap Camie and sell her into slavery numerous times, despite having spent years freeing slaves under Tiger and seeing the life slaves live under the World Government.
  • Terrible Trio: The Macro Fish-Man Pirates, which doubles as a Oddly Small Organization.
