Makoto Fujiwara's peerage

    Makoto Fujiwara
Rank: King
"I'm no hero. Or at least, that's what I keep telling myself. I don't exactly know who I am. A couple days ago I didn't even know I was an angel"
Makoto Fujiwara is a high school student at Kuoh Academy, who also happens to be the son of the Seraph Gabriel and a human. He claims to have little interest in women, so naturally, he becomes surrounded by them.
  • Accidental Pervert: Given he's in a group of sexy devils, this is very inevitable. It takes him less than one chapter for him to walk in on someone naked.
  • Accidental Proposal: As mentioned below, Makoto managed to beat Sona at a game of chess, thus fulfilling her requirement that she will only take a man that can beat her in chess and landing a spot on Sona's short list of marriage candidates.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: He somehow manages to beat Sona in chess, despite Rias and Akeno teaching him for only about a week and a half at that point. Makoto didn't even know what he was doing half the time he played, yet he still managed to break through Sona's defenses and eventually checked her king. He wasn't able to replicate this fluke when he faced her again later, but she is still impressed by his ability.
  • Actually Pretty Funny:
  • A Friend in Need: His very first scene may show him cutting a class, but it is quickly established that he will go out of his way to help someone who is in need, with his Establishing Character Moment being him jumping over a fence to heal a classmate who twisted her ankle. Soon after, he would risk his life to heal Aika, who had been attacked by fallen angels, help Asia, from buying her groceries to saving her from Freed and Raynare, and even save Raynare herself when her higher-ups turn on her. And that's just the first story arc.
  • An Arm and a Leg: His right arm is cut off by Halja and is replaced by a Dragon arm.
  • Berserk Button: Do not threaten his friends. Especially Asia.
  • Big Brother Instinct: His desire to protect Asia from being killed is what prompts him to accept the Holy Pieces.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He's incredibly intelligent, being one of the top students in his class, but he would rather skip class and watch anime.
  • Brought Down to Badass: after his right arm is injured and immune to magical healing by Korgull's captured Null Ripper and unable to use Dividing Gear, he still manages to pose a threat to him using only his Power of Retribution on just his uninjured left arm, and proceeds to help Sairaorg and Rias defeat him.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: While he's confused about his situation after killing Kalawarner, Raynare tries to assassinate him.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Inverted. Rias and especially Akeno (the latter of whom he later becomes a couple with) are typically the only people he's able to let his perversion show to. In contrast, he has some trouble going all the way in his dancing practice with Venelana, getting embarrassed while handling Rias' mother's youthful figure.
  • Celibate Hero: Subverted. He claims to have no interest in romantic endeavors, but in reality he just has a Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality.
  • The Danza: In-Universe. The name of his character, Makkun, in Miracle Levia-Tan is just Serafall Leviathan's Affectionate Nickname for him.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Frequently makes witty remarks about the situation he's in, no matter how grim.
Aika: Y'know, I keep telling you to get a girlfriend, but you didn't have to go that far...
Makoto: I don't want to hear a word about whether or not I have a girlfriend ever again.
  • Did You Just Romance Cthulhu?: He appears to be "definitely not building a harem of the most potent devils in the underworld"; gaining the romantic interest of not just Rias and Akeno, who are powerful by themselves, but also being regularly flirted with by even higher devils such as Grayfia and even Serafall Leviathan.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father vanished when he was young, and his mother interrupts or gives a Non-Answer every time the subject comes up until she reveals he was killed by the Himejima clan in the same fashion as Akeno's mother.
  • Dismemberment Is Cheap: Zig-Zagged with getting his arm cut off by Halja. While it quickly replaced by a dragon arm that is functionally identical (other than Rias and Akeno having to suck on it regularly to contain its human form), the event leaves him temporarily unconscious from the blood loss and he would have been finished off by Halja if Yuma and Sirzechs didn't stop her.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: He develops these the morning after he is kept up most of the night by anxiety dreams caused by Rias' arranged marriage and his Sacred Gear awakening.
  • First-Person Smartass: His sarcastic attitude extends to his narration, where he will often make snarky quips about his situation and frequently lean on the fourth wall.
  • Genre Savvy:
    • He highly suspects that Yuma was trying to pull a Prank Date on him, listing three potential scenarios when she asks "could you do something for me?"
    • He's fully aware that he's accumulating a harem, especially after they start sleeping in the same house as him.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: He tries to get Yuuto out of his Heroic BSoD through this method, but he interrupts the slap and tells Makoto to stop "acting like Rias Gremory."
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Manages to survive countless injuries due to his Angelic Healing.
  • Goroawase Number: His old online handle Fuji0510 stands for the first syllable of his last name and 0510 spells out "Ma-ko-to."
  • Healing Hands: Has this due to being an angel, but is not as strong as Asia in this regard.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: He can be cold and rude sometimes, but he genuinely wants to help people.
  • I Can Still Fight!: After Korgull declares to Sairaorg that he had beaten him and ended the Rating Game for him, Makoto suddenly attacks him with his uninjured hand, being held up by Asia, declaring that he is not done yet.
  • I Am Who?: Due to an enchantment, he is unaware of his true nature for 17 years to protect him from Halja.
  • Insistent Appellation: He insists on being on a First-Name Basis with Rias, much to Koneko's initial frustration. When Koneko insists, he calls her "President Rias."
    • He briefly breaks that trend when he decides that he needs to respect her more as a Mentor Archetype. She tells him that she kinda liked it when he called her Rias.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: He has this attitude towards his "Armor Break" after he accidentally strips Hagane Sasaki with it.
  • Magnetic Hero: He attracts characters of all sorts, and Matsuda and Motohama make not of this as transfer students start coming in like flies.
Makoto: What can I say? I have a magnetic personality.
Motohama: Yeah. I don't think your personality is what's magnetic.
  • Nephilim: He's referred to as one, being the son of an angel and a human.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite being a self-proclaimed Celibate Hero and an angel, he will show Covert Pervert tendencies on occasion, and is implied to be aroused by seeing Rias naked.
Akeno: This isn't turning you on by any chance, is it?
Makoto: (while getting a Nosebleed) Not at all. Why would you get that idea?
  • Nosebleed: Surprisingly, not immune. He unknowingly gets one while Akeno is suggestively sucking his dragon spirit out from his finger and will have to occasionally "wipe his nose" when one of the devils (usually Akeno) says or does something lewd.
  • Not So Stoic: He's normally aloof and unfazed by even someone as manipulative as Raynare. However, the moments he does show strong emotion ends up being the key to him unlocking his powers, as he finds out when he has trouble using them a few days after he discovered them fighting Raynare and Halja. Played for Drama when someone he cares about is threatened. Played for Laughs when he's being caught off guard by Akeno's constant teasing.
  • The Nudifier: His "Armor Break" ends up being this, even though it's only supposed to tear through armor.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Besides being an angel, this is his other contrast to Lovable Sex Maniac Issei. He isn't the Celibate Hero he makes himself out to be but, despite the fact he is considering having children at some point, he is averse to pretty much anything sexual, mainly because he would become a fallen angel if he crossed the line, and goes on the defensive frequently such as when Rias offers to help bathe him even in a Modesty Towel. Akeno particularly likes to mess with him because of this, offering to take off her bathrobe entirely when he is taken back by her rubbing his shoulders in nothing but one. Over time, he slowly starts getting over it, as evidenced by the different reactions he gives when he walks in on Rias sleeping in her usual attire at the beginning of Volume 1 and the end of Volume 2.
  • Psychosomatic Superpower Outage:
    • He is initially unable to reuse his Power of Retribution after first using it against Raynare and Halja as he is unable to nail down the proper emotional frame of mind. He is able to generate an uncontrolled burst through rage, but he learns to focus it better through determination to protect his comrades.
    • This happens again as he has trouble maintaining his Balance Breaker form as he deals with the anxiety from Rias being poisoned and having to lead her peerage while she recovers from illness.
  • The Red Mage: He is efficient at both dealing damage and dealing with it.
  • Samaritan Relationship Starter: He has kindled many a friendship by helping people with their problems. These include helping Asia buy groceries and later saving her from Freed and Raynare, offering his coat to Hagane, and consoling Rossweisse.
  • Save the Villain: He saves Raynare from Freed when Halja tries to have her killed.
  • Secret Art: Has access to the Power of Retribution, the holy variant of Power of Destruction, thanks to his mother.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: He denies that he's in a relationship with anyone in the harem at any chance he gets.
  • Superpower Lottery: Has access to a wide amount of powers, including healing, light weapons, his mother's Secret Art, and Dividing Gear.
  • Surpassed the Teacher: He manages to be a better English teacher to Matsuda and Motohama than the actual teacher, thanks to his innate language skills as an angel. Though, Makoto believes that's in part due to them being distracted by "erotic daydreams" in the middle of class.
  • Too Qualified to Apply: His enhanced abilities and reflexes from being an angel (which was unbeknownst to him at the time) caused him to be denied entry into the track-and-field and swim teams from fear of being mistaken for doping.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His Divine Parentage makes him incredibly strong but it takes him time to learn a lot of his abilities.
  • Verbal Tic
    • He commonly says "Good grief," a common translation of "yare yare."
    • He will also say "Not gonna lie" before making a low-key perverted statement.

    Asia Argento
Rank: Bishop
"The people I work for are selfish and cruel... It takes all the strength I can muster from God not to become like them. But you're different. You go out of your way to help those in need."
A priestess girl with the power of Twilight Healing who becomes Makoto's first servant.
  • Adaptation Species Change: She is reincarnated as Makoto's angel servant instead of as Rias' devil servant.
  • Back from the Dead: As an angel this time.
  • Damsel in Distress: At the end of Volume 1 when she is captured by Raynare.
    • Damsel out of Distress: She is seized by Diodora in Volume 2, but she escapes his grip and gives him a slap for his troubles.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Raynare doesn't perform the ritual on her and wasn't planning to. Instead, she is stabbed by Freed when Halja catches wind of Raynare's plan to betray her.
  • Doorstop Baby: Like canon, was left at a convent as a child.
  • Emergency Transformation: She is reincarnated into an angel after she is killed by Freed.
  • Healing Hands: Her Twilight Healing.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Played for Laughs when she takes a dodgeball for Makoto during the Gremory-Sitri dodgeball game. Complete with Say My Name from Makoto.
  • I Am the Noun: A funny example when she is escorting Makoto to the Club Room when he is heavily fatigued following a night of Anxiety Dreams.
Makoto: Shouldn't I go see the nurse if I'm fatigued this bad?
    Asia: I am your nurse.
    Makoto: Fair point.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: How she meets her end in this version courtesy of Freed Sellzen.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: She is sweet and nice to virtually everyone and is completely unaware to the innuendo that some of the others, particularly Aika, try to throw around. Makoto gets particularly miffed at any attempt by Aika to try and corrupt her, such as when she convinced her that bloomers are part of the Dodgeball uniform.
Aika: Well, I heard that it helps for a boy to keep his fingernails short whenever he's active.
    Makoto: What!? That's absurd!"
Matsuda: I knew you were suspicious!
    Asia: Active in what?
Makoto: Do not answer that, Aika!
  • The Heretic / You Can't Go Home Again: She was excommunicated after healing a devil, later revealed to be Diodora, unknowingly, which lead to her working for the Fallen Angels and Rogue Exorcists for lack of anywhere else to go.
  • The Ingenue: Her innocence, especially compared to the people she worked for, convinces Makoto that he needs to protect her. She's also oblivious to any innuendo that Aika throws at Makoto.
  • Now, Let Me Carry You: After his right arm had been gravely injured by Korgull's captured Null Ripper, Makoto is left unable to stand from the pain until Asia helps him up and helps him stand while he assists Sairaorg and Rias in defeating Korgull.
  • Rescue Reversal: After Makoto saved her in Volume 1, she eventually returns the favor at the climax of Volume 6, by coming to Makoto's rescue with Rias and helping him stand back up after his right arm had been unhealably injured by Korgull.
  • White Magician Girl: She becomes the group's primary healer after she is resurrected.

    Irina Shidou
Rank: Knight
"Well, if that thing's from Hell, then our Holy Swords shall smite them! Amen!"
A girl whose family Makoto and Gabriel stayed within England during a Summer Break in Middle School. She is later tasked alongside Xenovia with protecting Gabriel and retrieving the missing Excalibur pieces.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She originally had these before growing them out in twin-tails, which initially confused Makoto when they reunited.
  • Childhood Friend: Downplayed. Makoto spent one summer in England with her family and she thinks they are in this relationship because of this.
  • Church Militant: She became an exorcist and was assigned to protect Gabriel when the Purist Faction stole the Excalibur pieces.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She is not as Hot-Blooded or impulsive as Xenovia, but she can occasionly act out of touch with reality, notably when she tries to buy a painting online that Makoto can clearly see is fake.
Irina: C'mon! I thought you would be on my side, here! Xenovia didn't understand because she's Catholic!
Makoto: Anyone with half a brain would question why the apostle Peter is throwing kisses!
Irina: Wait, that's what he was doing?
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Subverted. Makoto initially doesn't recognize her due to her change in hairstyle but then immediately remembers when given a picture of her when they first met.
  • Genki Girl: She's loud and energetic, visibly geeking out when her supervisor extended her assignment in Kuoh after helping defeat Kokabiel.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her current hairstyle, which was a drastic change from when she and Makoto first met in Middle School.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: She is loyal to Makoto and faithful to God in spite of his death and Halja's usurpation of his throne, making her the ideal candidate for Hauteclere.
    • She also insists that Makoto himself is "too pure" to even consider sex when Aika makes a joke that Makoto is sexually active... right before Xenovia offers to get him condoms if he is ever sexually active.
  • Modesty Shorts: She wears bike shorts under the Kuoh Academy uniform to "help prevent flashing."
  • Morph Weapon: Her Excalibur Mimic, which she often keeps on a string on her arm. She eventually passes this on to Makoto after she gets Hauteclere.
  • Only the Pure of Heart: Hauteclere's key requirement is purity of heart, Gabriel claims she "can't think of anyone who is more qualified." She demonstrates this through her unwavering faith in God and loyal friendship with Makoto.

    Xenovia Quarta
Rank: Knight
"The Church didn't want the Underworld potentially getting their hands on Excalibur. I don't see the problem with Lady Gabriel's son assisting us, though!"
An exorcist from the Church who is tasked with protecting Gabriel after Grigori steals three of the Excalibur pieces
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: She never threatens to kill Asia in this version, mainly because she wasn't turned into a devil.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Like Asia, Makoto offers to reincarnate her as an angel instead of a devil.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Her Hot-Blooded nature makes her attack with a "Brute force strategy" that she eventually has to train herself out of.
  • BFS: Her Excalibur Destruction, which Makoto describes as "almost like a battle axe." Durandal also counts.
  • Black-and-White Morality: Downplayed compared to her original stance in the original series and Played for Laughs when she briefly decides against rooting for the Occult Research Club on account of them being devils, until Makoto tells her that the Student Council is also composed of devils, upon which she decides to root for Makoto's team with Irina. She decides devils aren't so bad after all after seeing Makoto's comradery with the Occult Research Club during the Sports Tournament.
  • Church Militant: She was one of the exorcists sent to protect Gabriel after the theft of the Excalibur Pieces from the Purist Faction.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Even though her being an angel has toned down her talk of copulation, she will still make the odd comment every now in then, particularly about Makoto's reproductive functions, including offering to buy condoms for Makoto if he is ever "active" while he was in class.
  • Hot-Blooded: She acts quite impulsively and typically acts before she thinks. Part of her training starting in Volume 5 is to have her act more strategically and rely less on brute force.
  • Master Swordsman: Even more so than Irina, due to her having the capability to wield a holy sword from birth, including one of the Excalibur fragments and later Durandal.

    Rossweisse
Rank: Rook
"Ever since I met you at that bar, you seemed like such a kind person. It would be an honor to be part of your guard."
A Valkyrie who initially works as Odin's personal bodyguard. After being left behind by Odin twice, she is convinced by Rias and Makoto to work for the school as a teacher and is reincarnated as angel as Makoto's first Rook.
  • Adaptation Species Change: She is reincarnated into an angel instead of a devil.
  • Bodyguard Babes: She was this when she was working as Odin's bodyguard, though Odin was more concerned with flirting with waitresses.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: This happens both of the times she is left behind by Odin in Volume 4. She is particularly susceptible to this whenever her relationship status is brought up.
  • Mystical White Hair: She has silver hair and is a Valkyrie.
  • Samaritan Relationship Starter: Makoto coming to get her when Odin abandons her at the Church conference convinces her that he's "superior management."
  • Sensei-chan: She is only slightly older than the students and they, particularly the Perverted Duo, start fawning over her almost immediately
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's roughly Makoto's height, being only one centimeter shorter than him.
  • Vague Age: While it is most likely she is slightly older than Rias, Makoto interrupts before it is confirmed whether or not she is of legal drinking age.
  • Younger than She Looks: Despite her mature demeanor and having graduated university, she is only slightly older than Makoto.

Rias Gremory's peerage

    Rias Gremory
Rank: King
"Thank you again for what you did last night. I knew I could trust you. My name is Rias Gremory, by the way, and yes, I am a devil. It's nice to meet you. I can call you Makoto, right?"
The President of the Occult Research Club and the heir to the House of Gremory who comes to Makoto's aid when he is attacked by fallen angels.
  • Arranged Marriage: She was forced into an engagement as the Heir to her Clan and attempts to elope with Makoto to avoid it.
  • Club President: She is the president of the Occult Research Club as leader of her peerage of devils.
  • Cool Big Sis: To the ORC in particular and the school as a whole.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": This was normally not an issue with Makoto, since Makoto's Insistent Appellation was First-Name Basis. However, when Makoto decides to change his mind when he feels he needs to respect her more as a Mentor Archetype, she whispers in his ear that she "kinda liked it" when he called her by her first name. She later explains that the reason she went to him to try and escape her arranged marriage because this showed her he "liked her for the girl that is Rias and not just Gremory" and the prestige that would entail.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Makoto describes her as the girl of every boy's dreams before correcting it to everyone.
  • Elopement: Since losing her virginity to Makoto is obviously out of the question, she attempts to plan a private marriage with Makoto behind her family's back to avoid her arranged marriage, but she is interrupted by Grayfia before she could pop the question to Makoto.
  • Friendly Address Privileges: As Makoto's mentor relationship with her grows, he briefly decides to start referring to her by her title like everyone else. She then insists, quite seductively, that she was perfectly fine with him referring to her by her name.
  • Mentor Archetype: She's the primary one who shows Makoto the ropes, especially when he becomes a master himself.
  • I Am Your Opponent: After Korgull ambushes Makoto in an attempt to retire him to force a victory for Sairaorg, leaving him barely able to stand with Asia's support, she finally comes to the battlefield herself to reassume her role as her team's King.
"You did well, Makoto. I will take over from here."
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Her Secret Art makes her this, being adept at the devestating Power of Destruction.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Even though Akeno and Makoto are the Official Couple as of Volume 4, her relationship with Makoto as True Companions still gets a majority of time.
  • Runaway Fiancé: Downplayed in actuality as Rias merely is willing to elope with Makoto through a private court marriage to escape her wedding with Riser before Grayfia stops her. However, it is played straight in a nightmare Makoto has where she asks him to suddenly run away with her in the middle of the night.
  • Secret Art: She inherited the Power of Destruction from the Bael clan on her mother’s side.
  • Sexy Mentor: She is quite beautiful and seductive, which occasionally takes Makoto off guard when she is trying to help and support him.
  • Sleeps in the Nude: Makoto finds this out the hard way. When Makoto offers her some of his mom’s old pajamas, she immediately stated she can’t sleep with clothes on.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She doesn't seem to mind Makoto walking in on her (or walking in on Makoto) with little to no clothes on.
  • Sick Episode: Volume 6 is this for her as she drinks poisoned champagne and Makoto has to lead her peerage against Sairaorg Bael.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: She tells Makoto this when he worries about being stuck in her shadow.

    Akeno Himejima
Rank: Queen
"My, my. You are such a goof. This isn't turning you on by any chance, is it?"
The Vice-President of the Occult Research Club who Makoto meets shortly after Rias.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Subverted. When Makoto sneaks into the club room while he's trying to hide to avoid being implicated with the Perverted Duo's peeping, she jokes that she happens "to have a thing for bad boys." In reality, she falls in love with him because of the good person he is.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: After being bedridden after Enrico injured her leg with an unhealable attack, she teases Makoto for brooding over his failure to save her instead of using this opportunity to take advantage of her.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: She is "uncomfortably disappointed" when Viser is revealed to have been taken care of already by Enrico Stark. She takes enjoyment in "punishing" her opponents and personally congratulates Makoto when he uses Excalibur Mimic as a "creative form of punishment" to dispatch of one of Kokabiel's cerberi.
  • Cool Big Sis: She is one of the schools two "onee-sans" and is considered by Makoto to be "the only girl to rival Rias in sheer head-turning."
  • First Kiss: She gives Makoto his first one at the end of Volume 2.
  • Hidden Depths: Makoto is so used to her being The Tease that he is caught off guard when she shows her soft, sentimental side.
  • Hurricane of Puns: When Rias catches her and Asia in Makoto's bed, she starts rattling off innuendos about them giving him "the night of his life" and "relieving him" to potentially insinuate that they had sex with him.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: Has purple eyes as a fallen angel, which her father was initially apprehensive about.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother was killed by assassins from Himejima clan when she was young.
  • The Mistress: She suggests that she appears like this to Makoto when they go to the Himejima mansion together to investigate Ravel Phenex's kidnapping.
    • After she and Makoto become the Official Couple, she actually becomes open to Rias being this to Makoto, much to the former's chagrin.
  • Official Couple: She and Makoto become this as of the end of Volume 4.
  • Ominous Adversarial Amusement: During her fight with Kuisha Abaddon, her opponent hears her "familiar giggle" as she narrowly flies out of the trap Kuisha had set with her Hole ability and flies behind her during the flash of light magic she redirected from Akeno's Holy Lightning, having already set up the finishing blow directly above her.
  • Say It with Hearts: Many of her more sensuous statements are suffixed with a tilde.
  • Serious Business: She is on the verge of waging war when Rahab Amon interrupted her date with Makoto.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Her flirting with Makoto includes massaging his shoulders in nothing but a bathrobe.
  • Shock and Awe: Her forte, which we first see used against Dohnaseek and Mittelt.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: While she does tease him for it, Makoto's pure heart is ultimately what attracts her to him, especially as she could be seen as "impure" as a fallen angel, and she cherishes him telling her that being a fallen angel had no bearing on him still liking her.
"I've always secretly envied you and your mother. Your wings are bright and pure, while mine are tainted even though I did nothing to deserve them."
  • The Tease: She constantly teases and flirts with Makoto in an attempt to get a rise out of him.
Akeno: Yuuto, for one, is so popular with the ladies that he's used to girls hitting on him, but you're so aloof that reactions like that are priceless.
Makoto: Aloof? Where did you get that idea?
Akeno: I think you just answered your own question.
  • Verbal Tic: She carries over her use of "my, my" ("ara ara") from the light novel.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Makoto says that she can be identified with this "energy."

    Aika Kiryuu
Rank: Pawn (x8)
"Oh, but you've been my hardest one yet. I got those two's measurements the day we met. But you're so boring I'll be lucky to get your size before we graduate."
Makoto's Childhood Friend who becomes a devil after Makoto and Rias save her from a fallen angel attack.
  • Almighty Janitor: Despite her being a Pawn. Between the Downfall Dragon Spear and her ability to Rank Up, she can go toe-to-toe with a Queen piece such as Enrico Stark and win, albeit with a power boost from Makoto.
  • Ascended Extra: She was a side character in the Light Novel but becomes a main character early on here.
  • Counter-Attack: The DDS allows her to absorb and release attacks.
  • Emergency Transformation: Her reincarnation into a devil was almost this before Makoto managed to save her.
  • Entendre Failure: She attempts to insinuate that Makoto's training with Rias was in a sexual sense but the meaning is completely lost on Asia.
Makoto: More mundane than you think.
  • Female Gaze: Along with having the Distaff Counterpart to Motohama’s "size scouter," she also shows more than a passing interest in Sairaorg’s well-built physique.
  • The Gadfly: She enjoys messing with Makoto and teasing him.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: She thinks this is just as good material if not more than BL, as evidenced by her reaction to Akeno groping Rias.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Picks up the slack for Makoto as she can read people's "manhood" with her Scary Shiny Glasses and generally fantasizes about things such as being with Yuuto.
  • The Peeping Tom: She peeps on Makoto and Yuuto bathing for BL doujinshi material until Rias reels her back claiming that "it is rude to peep."
  • Yaoi Fangirl: She likes "smutty doujinshi" and encourages the idea of "Makoto x Kiba".
    Classmate: Wait, don't tell me...
Aika: Yep! Yuuto and Makoto are totally a unit!
Makoto: No we are not! Stop trying to give the Doujin Club ideas!

    Yuuto Kiba
Rank: Knight
"As a Knight, I'm sworn to serve Rias Gremory and her allies. You helped me out once before, so I would be glad to return the favor..."
A fellow second-year and the school's resident Chick Magnet.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Aika attempts to invoke this with him and Makoto, which Makoto doesn't like.
  • Casting a Shadow: He creates a sword of darkness with Sword Birth to counter Freed's swords of light.
  • Chick Magnet: So much so that Makoto initially believes that his Sacred Gear ability is attracting women.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was experimented on by corrupt priest Valper Galilei and was disposed of along with his friends when the experiments failed. He was the only survivor only because he escaped and ran into Rias.
  • Fragile Speedster: His piece in a nutshell. He's so fast that Makoto struggled to keep up with his fight with Freed.
  • Heroic BSoD: Goes into one in Volume 3 after being shown the picture of Makoto and Irina with the Holy Sword Ascalon and is escalated when he overhears about Xenovia and Irina possessing Excaliburs and the theft of three of the other pieces.
  • It's Personal: Like canon, he has a vendetta against the Fallen Angels and Exorcists due to his history with the Holy Sword Project. This comes to a head in Volume 3 with the theft of Excalibur by the Purist Faction.
  • Master Swordsman: He can take on experienced swordsmen such as Freed, especially in conjunction with his Sacred Gear, Sword Birth.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His late peers from the Holy Sword Project refer to him as Isaiah, but he was given the name Yuuto Kiba by Rias.
  • Only Sane Man: One of the more normal characters in a melting pot of odd characters.
  • Suicide Mission: Makoto argues that his crusade to destroy Excalibur is this.
  • The Paralyzer: He uses an electricity sword to stun Jin Kamado, allowing Aika to ambush him and land the finishing blow.

    Koneko Toujou
Rank: Rook
"Don’t get any ideas…"
A deceptively petite first-year who happens to be a super-strong nekomata.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: After her sister supposedly lost control of her powers and killed her master, she feared that the same would happen to her if she began to use them.
  • Can't Catch Up: She begins to become self-conscious of this when she starts to struggle against a group of Khaos Brigade mooks, apologizing to Rias for "having trouble catching up." She later opens up about this to Makoto after using up her energy doing late-night training by herself and breaking the seal on her nekomata form and he convinces her to unseal her powers.
  • Cat Girl: Like her sister, she is also a nekomata. However, she keeps them sealed at all times because she fears she will lose control of her powers just like her sister. However, Makoto convices her to embrace who she is by saying he isn't "any less of a stupid delinquent" because he now has a dragon hand.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She has an extremely dry sense of humor, definitely rivaling Makoto in this regard.
  • Dislikes the New Guy: She initially thinks Makoto is a "delinquent" and refers to him almost exclusively as such after he refuses to refer to Rias as "President." She cuts this out by the end of Volume 2 after their fight with Hagane Sasaki.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She starts to slowly care more about Makoto the longer he's in the group, especially after he saves her life during their fight with Hagane Sasaki.
  • Mighty Glacier: Extremely strong, but not nearly as fast as Kiba.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: She effortlessly moves an altar that Makoto struggled to budge despite their size difference.
  • Older Than They Look: If Makoto didn't know who she was, he would have confused her with an elementary schooler.
  • One Head Taller: Makoto is over a foot taller than she is at 174 cm, (5'9") while she is 138 cm (4'6").
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Kuroka reveals that Koneko's true name is Shirone.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Not towards Makoto, but towards Riser after he tries to peep on the hot springs, Megaton Punching him out for his troubles.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Makoto initially assumed that Rias wasted the Rook piece on her. He was proven otherwise when she hurled a church pew at Freed.

    Ravel Phenex
Rank: Bishop
"Relax, Makoto. I’ll make sure you stay nice and warm."
Sister of Riser Phenex who was also his Bishop before he traded her to Rias.
  • Damsel in Distress: She is held hostage by Milcom Amon in Volume 2.
  • Power-Strain Blackout: This happens to her during the second round of the Rating Game against Sairaorg Bael. She uses her power of Immortality to break through Liban Crocell's Gravity Jail and regain control of her body. However, that and using high-level explosive magic on par with Yubelluna's multiple times against Gandoma Balam causes her to literally burn through her energy, causing her to collapse and retire from the game.
  • Hidden Depths: After she helps clean the school's pool, she refuses to swim with the others. She ends up being the best swimmer out of all of them when Koneko shoves her in.
  • Imagined Innuendo: Koneko gets defensive when she tells Makoto that she'll "make sure you stay nice and warm" during his training.
  • Kill It with Water: Very much downplayed, since she can get in water enough to be quite a good swimmer, but, likely because of her fire affinity, water makes her "feel weird" and she also doesn't care for how it messes up her hair.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Koneko constantly refers to her as a fried chicken, much to her chagrin.
  • Ojou: Like Rias, she is the daughter of a noble devil family.
  • Playing with Fire: Her signature ability is fire, courtesy of being of the house of Phenex.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: Being a noble devil doesn't stop her from being a potent fire mage and master tactician.
  • Tsundere: She acts this way towards her brother, who originally added her to his Battle Harem to fill this and the little sister role. She's more of a Nice Girl to Makoto.

    Hagane Sasaki
Rank: Rook
"It wasn't you, Lord Milcom. I wanted to work for someone else besides the Goddess of Death. So, I jumped at the opportunity."
Milcom Amon's Rook who infiltrated the Himejima clan and whose magic armor is immune to Holy and Demonic powers. She eventually runs away from Milcom's peerage and joins the Occult Research Club.
  • Apologetic Attacker: She apologizes profusely when she accidentally punches Koneko right in the head.
  • The Brute: While she's normally an unassuming Japanese girl, she is extremely tough thanks to her armor.
  • Defeat by Modesty: She's defeated by Makoto after he accidentally strips her with Armor Break.
  • Friendly Enemy: She's extremely friendly, to the point Koneko insists on getting on with the fight instead of her greeting Makoto and apologizing for their last encounter.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She runs away after the Rating Game with the Gremory family and joins the Fujiwara household at the end of Volume 2.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: A non-fatal example. She takes the full force of Ladora Bune's dragon fire using her Mark 3 armor, giving Yuuto an oportunity to slash Bune's arm with the dragon-slaying holy sword Ascalon. Even though they ultimately do not defeat Ladora, it is not entirely a Senseless Sacrifice as Sairaorg is forced to use his one Phoenix Tear to heal the wound, allowing them to spend the rest of the game gradually weakening Sairaorg and his team.
  • Meaningful Name: Hagane means "Steel".
  • The Mole: She acts as this while working for the Himejima clan, and is implied to have written the hostage note.
  • Mighty Glacier: She isn't very mobile, but she hits like a truck and is immune to two common types of magic.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: While not nearly as petite as Koneko, she is still very much deceptively tough.
  • No-Sell: Her armor nullifies demonic and holy magic. The same can't be said for Shinto Fire magic or Dividing Gear.
  • Samaritan Relationship Starter: Combined with Defeat Equals Friendship. Makoto's act of offering his jacket after accidentally "Dress Breaking" her convinces her to run away and join the Occult Research Club.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Most certainly, considering her "steel" is a powerful suit of armor.
  • Token Good Teammate: Even while still part of Milcom's peerage, she was the nicest of his servants and later performed a Heel–Face Turn.

    Kuroka
Rank: Bishop (mutated)
"The name's Kuroka, by the way. Tell Shirone I said Hi."
A notorious stray devil who was eventually hired by the Grigori, working alongside Yuma Amano and Lint Sellzen. She is a nekomata and the older sister of Koneko.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: She doesn't make an antagonistic first impression like in the source material.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She is a stray devil who wears a black kimono, but is still as friendly as the rest of the devils.
  • Cat Girl: Specifically, a nekomata. She even throws "nya" into much of her dialogue.
  • Crime of Self-Defense: She killed her master to protect her sister Koneko from his experiments, becoming a wanted stray devil as a result. These charges are lifted after she protects Koneko again from Ahab Amon on the basis that Rias takes her in as her servant.
  • Kimono Fanservice: She is noted by Makoto as wearing her kimono rather loosely.
  • Pretty Freeloaders: The most egregious example out of the harem as she starts crashing at Makoto's house uninvited as of Volume 4.
  • Sexy Shirt Switch: She stole one of Makoto's shirts and was wearing it while she was crashed on Makoto's couch. Though, this was happening while Makoto was still fighting Iblis in the Underworld.
  • Verbal Tic: She tends to insert "nya" into her sentences or even her words.
    "Well that was unfortunyate..."
  • Women Prefer Strong Men: After he helps defeat Kokabiel, she shows an interest in bearing Makoto's children. It appears to be brief as this interest appears to have waned in Volume 4.
Kuroka: That was an impressive display earlier. Do you want to make a child with me? I really want the child of a dragon and angel!
Yuuto: (narrating) Okay, what!? Is she trying to seduce him?
Makoto: Unless you're fine with the child of a dragon and fallen angel, then I must decline.
Kuroka: I would be fine with that~

    Rahab Amon (Spoilers)
Rank: Knight
"Lord Ahab Amon may be my father, but my mother is the former angel Iblis. That’s why I can wield a holy sword so well."
Milcom's angel-devil hybrid half-sister who stole Ascalon from Gabriel. After being defeated, she forms a Bōsōzoku gang to hunt Makoto down.
  • Affably Evil: Even before her Heel–Face Turn, she was only antagonistic towards the club while doing a job for the Khaos Brigade. She is much more neutral with Devil Heaven.
  • All Bikers are Hells Angels: She's the leader of a Bōsōzoku gang that quickly became notorious in Kuoh Town shortly after Iblis' invasion of the Underworld.
  • Born of Heaven and Hell: While she shares a father with her half-brother, Milcom, her mother was the then-angel Iblis.
  • Brought Down to Badass: During the Rating Game with Sairaorg, Misteeta Sabnok seals her use of Arondight with Trick Vanish. That doesn't stop her from beating him down with her fists to force him to break the seal.
  • Defector from Decadence: While she had already decided to defect before, discovering her father's secret prison full of kidnapped Sacred Gear users was clearly the last straw.
  • The Dragon: She was the secondmost threat after Iblis in Volume 4, stealing Ascalon to try and assassinate Makoto and Sona.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She decides to ultimately side with Makoto as she views him as a chance to defeat her family after she finds out how Makoto defeated her mother. She "calls dibs" to join Rias as her final Knight at the end of Volume 5.
  • Hybrid All Along: She is intially assumed to be a pure devil, but she is revealed to be half-angel.
  • I Am Not a Gun: She has gained the reputation in the Khaos Brigade as a "unbeatable" "perfect hybrid" with "no weaknesses," which she resents.
  • Kryptonite Factor: Averted. Because she is a angel-devil hybrid, she is not weak to light weaponry and holy weapons.
  • Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: After seeing just how furious Akeno could get when she claimed she and Devil Heaven "ruined their date," she decides to tell her gang to leave them be and says she'll settle it some other time.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • She is named after a Jerichoite prostitute from the Book of Joshua who hides the Hebrew spies scouting the city just like this character assists the Occult Research Club with finding her father's prisoners.
    • Her gang, Devil Heaven, aside from being a play on the Hells Angels, alludes to her mixed parentage.
  • One Hero, Hold the Weaksauce: Because she is part-angel, she is not weak to light and holy weapons like other devils and in turn has a higher affinity with them.
  • Phantom Thief: She stole Ascalon before Gabriel and the Gremorys could even notice who did it.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: She only works part-time with the Khaos Brigade and is less willing to fight with Makoto otherwise. Her primary loyalty is with Devil Heaven.
  • Weapon of X-Slaying: She steals Ascalon, which is not only a Holy Sword that is strong against devils, but, as Makoto found out the hard way, dragons as well.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: She is a angel-devil hybrid and also wields Arondight, Lancelot's holy sword that has the properties of a holy demonic sword.

Others

    Gabriel Fujiwara
"You've had these powers from birth because I too am one."
The doting mother of Makoto Fujiwara and a counselor at Kuoh Academy who acts as the Occult Research Club's advisor. She's actually the last surviving Seraph who passed on her angelic powers to Makoto.
  • Archangel Gabriel: She is secretly this as she is in hiding after Halja took over Heaven.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 6 has her narrating Halja's takeover of Heaven and subsequent escape to Earth, where she finds out Halja pulled a Reset Button.
  • Berserk Button: Do not harm anyone under her care and especially do not willingly damage her property (Kokabiel learned the latter the hard way).
  • Big Fancy House: She is gifted one by the Gremorys after she helps save the life of one of their servants.
  • Brought Down to Badass: She loses two of her twelve wings after her initial confrontation with Halja and her power begins to wane over the first ten years as an exile on Earth, to the point she struggles against the human mage Suou Himejima. This still doesn't stop her from mowing through all the other assassins and later effortlessly obliterating Kokabiel, albeit with a power boost from her son.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: Her quality of life actually improved drastically after her husband's death thanks to a newfound relationship with the Gremory family. She has a Big Fancy House and a job at a prestigious private school.
  • Harem Nanny: Is happy to take care of the ORC for obvious reasons.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: Her failure to protect her husband and Shuri Himejima became was such a painful memory she refuses to bring it up until the Himejima clan is implicated in the capture of Ravel Phenex.
  • Insistent Terminology: At Asia’s welcoming party, she refers to Asia as Makoto's "partner". When Makoto corrects it to "servant," he is completely ignored.
  • I Want Grandkids: Really wants Makoto to find a partner to bear her grandchildren, which was one of her primary reasons for enrolling Makoto in a former One-Gender School and even lets the ORC sleep in her house.
  • Last of His Kind: Became this after Halja wiped out the angels when she took over Heaven to gain the power of the Holy System. With Makoto and the Holy Pieces, however, this became averted.
  • The Matchmaker: Intent on hooking up Makoto with members of the ORC. She's especially interested in pairing Makoto up with Rias and goes ballistic on Riser Phenex when he insists on marrying her.
  • Samaritan Relationship Starter: Her and Akeno saving the life of one of the House of Gremory's servants leads to them forming a long-lasting relationship that helps kick off the plot.
  • Same Character, But Different: She doesn't act quite as childish as she does in the Light Novel, which is justified as she spent 18 years as a refugee on Earth and raised a child.
  • Stacy's Mom: Her youthful appearance hasn't gone unnoticed by the Perverted Duo.
Matsuda: Tell your mom I'm available!
    Makoto: I most certainly won't!
  • Sue Donym: "Gabby" is just a shortened version of her real name.
  • Younger Than They Look: If the Bible is anything to go by, she is over 2,000 years old at least and yet she doesn't look much older than her son.

    Yuma Amano/Raynare (Spoilers)
"I did enjoy myself, Makoto. We should do this again some other time."
The leader of a gang of fallen angels who is sent by Halja to assassinate Makoto.
  • Adaptational Heroism: She initially still opposes the Occult Research Club, but she also is trying to take Halja down and kidnaps Asia not to take her Sacred Gear, but to draw Makoto in so she can convince him to help her defeat her master.
  • Adaptational Modesty: She never wears the Stripperific outfit she transformed into in the anime. She merely reveals a pair of black wings like in the original Light Novel and Manga.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While she still tries to kill Makoto, she is much less malicious towards him and views him as a Worthy Opponent and a potential ally.
  • Arc Villain: Of Volume 1. She tries to assassinate Makoto and later tries to wrap him up in her coup against Halja by kidnapping Asia.
  • Bastard Angst: Before finding out Azazel had been "obliterated" by Halja, she furiously sought to prove herself worthy of being his daughter. After the other fallen angels revealed this, her focus then changed to getting revenge.
  • Be All My Sins Remembered: Even after pulling a full Heel–Face Turn, she still feels guilty about trying to kill Makoto and she believes that she isn't worthy of forgiveness.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She saves Makoto from Halja at the end of Volume 2.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: She not only tries to trick Makoto but betrays Halja as well. She ends up getting a taste of her own medicine as both her boss and servants end up turning on her, with only Makoto willing to stop them. She gets better.
  • Composite Character: She takes some of the characteristics of Vali, including leading the Anti-Hero Team and being a Worthy Opponent of the hero.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She no longer wants to be called "Raynare" after deserting the Khaos Brigade, and insists on the name she used in her date with Makoto.
  • Double Reverse Quadruple Agent: It's unclear at first whether she's on the side of Halja, Makoto, or just in it for herself. The first, at least, is disproven by Halja trying to kill her and saving him later clears things up much more. She's largely over this by Volume 4 and eventually joins the Occult Research Club proper.
  • Enemy Mine: She was also against Halja, and tries to convince Makoto to join forces with her, which he isn't convinced of.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: She has this both to her when Halja finds out her plan to betray her and from her when she finds out Freed and Mittelt betrayed her with Halja.
  • Get It Over With: After Makoto defeats her, she requests that he be the one to finish her off before her boss can do it for him. He is, of course, interrupted by Halja attempting to do that exact thing.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She decides to defect from the Khaos Brigade after she finds out what Halja did to Azazel.
  • Heroic Bastard: It's revealed in Volume 4 that she was a love child of Azazel. Before the events of Volume 1, she was closer to a Bastard Bastard.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: She is supposed to have this power, but because she failed to finish off Makoto, Yuma Amano is still in Makoto's contact list. Which she uses to call for backup when the Occult Research Club disappears after he is trapped in a Mirror Dimension.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: She tries to convince Makoto that they share a common enemy, but he isn't convinced until Halja tries to kill her.
  • Pragmatic Hero: She is this initally after her her Heel–Face Turn. Despite having defected from the Khaos Brigade, it's obvious she doesn't want to associate with the Devils and Occult Research Club and wants to take matters into her own hands against Halja.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: Even after making a full Heel–Face Turn, she still does some morally-grey things like helping break Kuroka out of prison so she could protect Koneko when Milcom tipped her and Lint off that his father was planning to attack the Occult Research Club after Makoto found the entrance to his hidden prison.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She survives after Makoto decides to spare her when it's obvious she and Halja are not allies.
  • The Vamp: She tries to manipulate Makoto by offering to be his boyfriend. This backfires when he reveals that he was onto her con the entire time.
  • Worthy Opponent: She takes enjoyment with sparring with Makoto.
  • You Killed My Father: She doesn't take Halja killing Azazel lightly.
