Earth Defense Force: GGG—Gutsy Geoid Guard / Gutsy Galaxy Guard

Pronounced "Three-G." GGG is a classified military defense program founded after the appearance of alien EI-01, secretly backed by the Japanese government, and the global powerhouses in space technology courtesy of incorporating Japan's Space Development Corporation into its structure, which also serves as the group's public face.

Originally named as "Gutsy Geoid Guard," based undersea beneath a man-made island near Tokyo called G-Island. The force is tasked to defend Earth from the predations of the Zonders. After G-Island is trashed in episode 30, the global scope of GGG was unraveled, leading all operations to go public. The central base then relocated to the outskirts of Earth; renaming their force as "Gutsy Galaxy Guard."

Codenamed as "Cyborg Guy," Gai is the main protagonist of the series. Gai was originally a New Meat astronaut working for the Space Development Corporation, but was fatally injured by El-01 during one of his space missions. He was lucky enough to be saved by Galeon and was found in a coma holding a mysterious stone to which secret intelligence later termed it “G-Stone.” In order to preserve his life, his father turned him into a cyborg, and used the G-stone Gai was holding as his main life support. Because of his new cyborg body, he is stronger, faster and more durable than any human, which is why he considers it his responsibility to use his enhanced body to protect humanity with the rest of the GGG. In battle, he can do a fusion with Galeon to form the Super Robot GaiGar, which in turn can do another fusion with other "Gao Machines" called the Final Fusion, forming the titular mecha GaoGaiGar. When on foot, Gai has several abilities which he can use to fight enemies hand-to-hand, including his Will Knife and Hyper Mode, the latter which can be activated for two minutes at a time to make Gai even stronger and faster.

Note: To view images relating to his "Evoluder Form" as presented starting GaoGaiGar: FINAL, please head over to GaoGaiGar vs. Betterman.
  • Ace Pilot: What he was training to be before the accident that led to his becoming a cyborg. He gets plenty of opportunities to prove he's still got chops, too.
  • Adventurer Outfit: Wears a brown linen shirt with white pants for one of his dating hours with Mikoto.
  • Animal Motifs: Lions. He has the character for lion in his name, his long red hair is similar to a Lion's mane, and Galeon, the mech he pilots, is modeled after a lion. Also, the series recurring theme of the power of courage means the choice of a lion as his motif is 100% deliberate, considering that Lions are often used as a symbol of courage.
  • Anti-Regeneration: As Genesic GaoGaiGar, he beats Palparepa so badly the latter struggles to regenerate.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Hurting or threatening Mamoru is a wonderful way to get some super-cyborg/Evoluder fist rammed down your throat.
  • Big Eater: There's an occasion where, when he and Mikoto are on their lunch break, you can see a half-dozen or so empty gyuudon bowls on his side. Apparently, it all gets incinerated inside his body and serves him no nutritional benefit, being entirely for his sanity.
  • Broken Bird: Zig-zagged. He was an enthusiastic new astronaut, proud to be "The World's Youngest Astronaut" at the age of 18, performing his first ever space mission. Then outer space sent an alien crushing his spaceship, making him Legally Dead (see below), and became one of the new experiments of classified military technology. He's careful not to really show this to most folks (especially Mamoru, who's usually our point-of-view character) but there are some moments where the mask slips and it's clear he's a lot more conflicted about his circumstances than he shows outwardly.
  • Can't Have Sex, Ever: When you're nothing but a head attached to a walking weapon, it's not like you have much of a choice. We do get subtle hints throughout the series that this is a problem for Gai and Mikoto.
    • After the main run of the series, both Gai and Mikoto’s genetic makeup has changed into the same type of species. While this regained Gai’s right to copulate, he decided not to. See him on GaoGaiGar VS. Betterman for that entry.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Gai is willing to fight dirty in battle, as shown by the famous punch he gives to EI-02 immediately after it regenerates the minute was in striking range. Another is when he proceeded to disarm or destroy all of EI-14's weapons before could use any of them. Then there is EI-13 which Gai delivered a curbstomp battle to, not letting it even regenerate or get up in the fight. The most famous examples, besides E1-02 is against Palparepa/Zonuda were all the prior moments are rolled into one.
  • Experienced Protagonist: The series began with Gai a few years in of being GGG's pilot, albeit painstakingly unstable and in constant need of repair. He was also already an experienced astronaut, only to become a cyborg due to a fatal injury from a space mission.
  • Fiery Redhead: As Cyborg Guy. Evoluder Guy has auburn-ish hair.
  • Gentle Giant: Gai's height towers at 6'7" (201cm), making him the second tallest person on the team note  and is by default, a man who's nice as a cuddly bear as long as he doesn't get the call to take out Zonders.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Despite Gai being a paragon of heroism and generally friendly person, he shows no tolerance for threatening or putting civilians, especially kids, in harms way. He'll gladly avenge his friends/allies if they are injured or damaged. He's also shown to not be as easily forgiving when he rejects J's claim of no longer being an enemy despite J willingly taking a lethal blow from Pasdar meant for Gai and then suicide attacking Pasdar. He's also willing to fight dirty, see Combat Pragmatist above. His attitude is best surmised against the Sol Masters:
Gai: You 11 Planetary Masters of Sol! I... will... destroy... ALL OF YOU!!!
  • Happily Married High-School Sweethearts: With Mikoto starting from FINAL.
  • The Hero: Doy.
  • Hot-Blooded: To the core. Many would say that Gai is the pinnacle of Nobuyuki Hiyama's Hot-Blooded typecasting. Hell, he even pilots a robot that has GAR in the name!
  • Large Ham: Zigzagged — in battle he is the pinnacle of the Screaming Warrior; outside, he's quite a calm man.
  • Legally Dead: When he was found after the EI-01 incident, in order to save his life using the newly found G-Stone, his father Leo Shishioh was forced to submit Gai's death certificate and even hold his son's public burial, so that Leo could proceed in preserving his son's life at the cost of turning him into an experimental weapon. Even Mikoto was unaware of Gai being alive until Leo found Mikoto sobbing at Gai's grave, and secretly told her about this classified project. This is why Gai is codenamed as "Cyborg Guy" rather than using his real name, and is also why Mikoto is so high-strung about Gai being put in danger - she has already experienced the pain of his death once, and what she's living right now is a dream that she's afraid could end at any moment. note
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He was a short-haired Bishōnen to begin with, but once he became a cyborg, his hair was lengthened to be designed as his supermode battery pack. Once he evolved into an Evoluder, his long hair turned back to average mid-length, but he end up growing his hair back to long length by the time of FINAL.
  • Ma'am Shock: Male version. Gai wasn't keen on Mamoru calling him "oji-san" ("Mister") in the first episode, citing that he's only 20. note  Mamoru settles on "Gai-nii-chan" ("Big brother Gai", lit.).
  • Mad Scientist's Hot Son: Both biologically and literally. He's the biological son of inventor, and GGG's lead mechanical engineer, Leo Shishioh, and got his good looking genes from his mom. Then when he got fatally injured into near death, his dad kept his life via turning practically more than 95% of his flesh into a walking weapon.
  • Not So Above It All: Gai's generally good natured and what one would say is the ideal, pure hero. But even he has moments of vice such as when he and Mikoto meet an old highschool friend Sumire in the 14.5 EP featured in Gao Gai Gar Blockaded Numbers. Sumire at first seems like she's interesting in Gai, but it later turns out she has a Boyfriend and that she likes Gai by seeing him as an Idol she looks up to. His expression and reaction suggests he likes the idea of having a fan. But Mikoto thinks instead he's dissapointed that she didn't show interest in him in a romantic way. He even gives a nervous laugh while looking at Mikoto.
  • Punny Name: "Cyborg Guy" and "Evoluder Guy" were meant to play on the English Homonym to Gai's name as a joke.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: His first act of business after obtaining Genesic GaoGaiGar.
Gai: You 11 Planetary Masters of Sol! I... will... destroy... ALL OF YOU!!!
  • Technopath: After becoming an Evoluder. To be blunt, his newly gained superpowers are boiled down to computer programming, hacking, and breathing in space.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Given to Palparepa during the climax of their last battle in FINAL.
Gai: The reason you tried to seal off GGG...! The reason you couldn't come close to the G-Crystal...! The reason you isolated GaoFighGar...! The reason you didn't come to directly attack our Earth...! It's all because you feared us! The G-Stone's power can only grow and surpass the power of the Loud G-Stone! This is the energy BORN FROM COURAGE!!
  • Spell My Name With An S: Gai or Guy? His full, legal name is written as "獅子王 凱", with his given name written as "Gai" in kanji, and the Gai in GaoGaiGar comes from his name. On the other hand, his codenames, which are his name for most purposes given that he's Legally Dead, are written in katakana, which is the same as how the western name "Guy" would be spelled, and official Sunrise material with English text consistently gives his real name as "Guy" as well. You wouldn't think this would be an issue for a Japanese man, but given that his father is named Leo and his uncle is named Liger...
  • Teen Genius: Do you know how long and hard it takes to become a professional astronaut? Gai earned his qualification at age 18, which means he sacrificed all of his childhood to get this job.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Goes into this after fighting EI-03, and would have crushed the core he'd just ripped out (killing the Zonderized human), if Mamoru hadn't gotten there in time. Also towards the end of his fight with the Zonuda, though that's more 'frenzied' than 'rage'.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: Primarily by his father. He takes pride in being the "Strongest Cyborg in History".

     Mamoru Amami (Latio)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a01_03.png
Click to see full body image
Voiced by: Maiko Itou (JP), Veronica Taylor (EN)

Born Latio from an alien planet coded as “Green Planet,” Mamoru was sent to Earth by Galeon upon birth and was adopted by The Amamis.

Now an elementary school boy, Mamoru began exhibiting the power to purify Zonder cores away from their human hosts by coming in contact with Zonder E1-02. Since then, GGG enlists him as their “Special Member” to bring his powers to task, as well as analyzing his powers in relations to the “G-Stone.”

  • Badass Adorable: He's able to battle Primevals and Zonuda.
  • But Now I Must Go: At the end of the series, he leaves Earth with Galeon on the mission to take out various other types of Zonder lifeforms throughout the universe.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Wah-Ha~!" He caught the influence from his dad.
  • Expy: He's pretty much the happy kid version of Takeru Myoujin.
  • Happily Adopted: As Mamoru’s origin of birth became clear later in the story, The Amamis comes clean with him as to how they became his adoptive parents. Mamoru wholly understands, appreciates, and willing to continue to love his parents to bits.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Although his purification abilities are mainly used to revert Zonderised humans to normal, they can be used as a weapon, as seen in FINAL when he vaporized Pei Le Cain.
  • Kid Hero: He's nine years old when the series start.
  • Moses in the Bulrushes: How his parents met him; a take or leave from one giant robot lion.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: He is usually brown-haired, but his hair turns green when his powers activate.
  • Puppy Love: All throughout the series, it's really clear that he and Hana have this relationship and they're both a little embarrassed - but still happy - about it.
    • Hana wears a wedding dress at the end of episode 49 and gets a smooch on the forehead from Mamoru before he left Earth showing how official it is.
  • Shounen Hair: His hair is a big ball of fluff with its length as long as he is, yet it can stay up-straight all by itself as if it has no gravity problems.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In spades. Starts out by flying towards the giant Shinjuku-crushing robot in the first episode, and eventually works his way up to fighting Zonuda alongside Galeon.

Gai's high school sweetheart. As if nearly losing Gai in the EI-01 incident wasn't bad enough, it also landed on her house, killing both her parents. Nonetheless, she has remained loyally at Gai's side through his reconstruction and rehabilitation, and continues to work by his side in the GGG Main Order Room.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: When she turns into Zonuda, this is what happens.
  • Bridge Bunnies: Mikoto is Gai's operator while piloting GaoGaiGar and her job includes initiating the Final Fusion
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Throughout the course of the television series, even though Mikoto and Gai have technically been dating since high school, Mikoto never had guts to actually confess her feelings towards Gai in any form; as Mikoto was shown holding onto her unsent Love Letter to Gai stuffed in one of her photo albums. It isn't until the Z-Master was defeated that she gives her letter to Gai. And then after being beaten as Zonda that the two admit their love for each other.
  • Fanservice Pack: In FINAL, her chest is even bigger than before, and her fairly conservative uniform from the TV series is replaced by one that shows off plenty of cleavage and some noticeable panty shots.
  • Godiva Hair: Towards the end of FINAL, she is depicted as completely naked, with her undone hair covering the naughty bits.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She calls her hairstyle, "The Bunny".
  • Happily Married: With Gai starting from FINAL.
  • High-School Sweethearts: She and Gai have been dating since high school, and the love the two have for each other is plainly obvious.
  • Manchurian Agent: As the host of the New Machine Species.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Mikoto already had flattering proportions in the TV series, but FINAL is where she truly graduates to this; aside from her increased measurements, her new uniform leaves little to the imagination, and she even appears naked near the end, with only her hair protecting her modesty.
  • Power Floats: As Zonuda, her feet never touch the ground.
  • Tender Tears: She cries a lot for her man, Gai better be paying her with lots of apologies after each battle.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In FINAL. Not only does she smash the G-Crystal to enable the Genesic Drive, but she also works with Mamoru to telepathically free Gai from the Chemical Bolts, and she's strapped into the Goldion Crusher at the end.

     Koutaro Taiga

The leader of GutsyGeoidGuard which is later renamed as, Gutsy Galaxy Guard, Taiga is an idealistic individual who authorizes all of the organization's operations, including deployment of the robots of the organization and the approvals for the use of Final Fusion and Goldion Hammer, amongst several other weapons used by GaoGaiGar.

  • Badass Normal: Especially after an episode in which he fought off possessed employees with a golf club. We find out in a Drama CD that he used to lead a Sentai-esque commando team. Yes, he used a golf club as his primary weapon then.
  • Benevolent Boss: He cares deeply for every member of his organization, either them be humans, cyborgs, or A.I robots.
  • Big Good: As the chief of GGG he is this.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: They stand up quite a bit.
  • Father to His Men: He cares a lot for all his subordinates, especially Gai and Mamoru.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Easily one of the kindest characters in the show.
  • Hot-Blooded: Even for a guy who mostly hangs out in the Main Order Room, he manages to pull this off well.
  • Hot-Blooded Sideburns: Has those to match his personality.
  • Large Ham: Almost every single order is done in the most epic way possible.

     Leo Shishioh
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a35.png
Voiced by: Kenichi Ogata (JP), Marc Diraison (EN)

GGG Japan's lead mechanical engineer and Gai's Father. Rather spry for his old age, and regularly wears rocket skates.

  • Cool Old Guy: What else could a old guy who creates giant robots to defend the earth and wears rocket skates be?
  • Einstein Hair: To show how brillaint he is.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He designs gadgets ranging from epic super robots for combat, to the wacky little things for his convenience. Like his "hair powder applier", and "Nail-Clipper Robot".
    • Do you know how Mikoto's radical Girlish Pigtails were formed? It was done by a type of static-controlling hairband to make her hair "stick" evenly onto those bands and form whatever hairstyle she can dream of. That very hairband was invented by Leo Shishioh, and was sold like hotcakes in public. note
  • Gag Nose: Something he shares with his brother.
  • Killed Off for Real: Especially jarring for an anime example. It only had a muddled Foreshadowing, happened within seconds, and he was stuck in such a situation, with such a short time frame, that the only thing a genius like him could was to scream "NOOO!" He appears alongside his wife as a Spirit Advisor to Gai shortly after.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: While he and Liger are different age, they look like identical twins. Despite their vastly different fashion choices, note  the only other way to tell them apart seems to be that Leo has thin eyebrows and large mustache, Liger's are other way around.
  • May–December Romance: It's implied via Leo's flashback that he and his wife, Kizuna are this.
  • Mission Control: In Main Order Room, of course, but prior to the events of the TV show he gave orders to the special commando team ID5, which Taiga and Hyuuma were once part of.
  • Sibling Rivalry: His relationships with his brother Liger could be a bit less of an insult war at times.
  • The Smart Guy: He is one of the world's top ten scientists.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: And he should thank his wife for giving their son her looks.

     Liger Shishioh
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a15_0.png
Voiced by: Kenichi Ogata (JP)

GGG America's lead mechanical engineer. He's the elder brother of Leo Shishioh, uncle of Gai Shishioh, and Father to Renais Cardiff Shishioh.

  • Cool Old Guy: He's technically older than Leo, but he still dresses like a teenage rockstar. And is actually a grandfather to Sakura.
  • Rocket Punch: The hand doesn't come off, but he still uses a rocket booster to give his brother a Liger Uppercut.
  • Sibling Rivalry: As mentioned above with Leo.
  • The Smart Guy: Liger, like Leo, is one of the most intelligent persons of the world.

     Geki Hyuuma

Voiced by: Hisao Egawa (JP), Marc Thompson (EN)

  • The Big Guy: Barring Gai and perhaps Mamoru, he is the only major human(oid) member of GGG that does any form of direct fighting (and trained Hyoryu and Enryu as well). Justified, in that he has a a military background and GGG seems to consist of mostly civilians.
  • Genius Bruiser: He's a very muscular guy who also serves as the mission strategist in the GGG.
  • A Glass in the Hand: A Running Gag involves him crushing his communicators. (He actually carries several in his vest.)
  • Macho Camp: Looks the part, but his sexual orientation is never even remotely hinted at.
  • Hot-Blooded: Perhaps even rivaling Gai's. However, he's also GGG's mission planner and keeps a cool analytical mind in this capacity.
  • The Strategist: Hyuuma's official position in GGG is "mission strategist", not "Muscles McMuscles".

     Kousuke Entouji
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a38.png
Voiced by: Tsutomu Kashiwakura (JP), Wayne Grayson (EN)

GGG Intelligence Operator and computer programmer. Slovenly but kind-hearted.

  • Genius Slob: His only really negative character trait. The guy's lack of hygiene is pretty noticeable.
  • Heroic BSoD: Papillion's death in FINAL hit him pretty hard.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Tends to act this way towards Volfogg. It's believed that he was friends with the dead agent Volfogg's Super AI was based on - this explains why Volfogg's death against Penchinon hits him so hard.
  • Improbably High I.Q.: Officially 300. Although it seems his father programmed Bay Tower Base's main systems, Kousuke did everything else. Alone.
  • Mission Control: Although he generally only communicates directly with Volfogg (who belongs to GGG Intel and is, at least technically, a subordinate).
  • Tragic Keepsake: The large bow Papillon places in his hair.
  • Ugly Guy Hot Girl: Just how did he get Papillon?
  • Workaholic: To the point that he sleeps better in the base than at home.

     Kazuo Ushiyama
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a37.png
Voiced by: Hiroaki Ishikawa (JP), Marc Thompson (EN)

GGG's Mechanic Operator, and is in charge of repairs and maintenance. Tends to be more of a background character than the other main GGG characters.

  • Animal Theme Naming: He has the surname of "Ox Mountain."
  • The Caretaker: Seems to be taking care of his three younger brothers, in the absence of any parents, and they are luckily never the source of angst for him. Otherwise, this is his basic job description towards the Yuusha Corps as well, and at one point we see him watering the plants in the background of Main Order Room.
  • Mission Control: To the point where if he leaves the base, it's because he's not working, or someone dragged him.
    • And then he goes and drives Drill Gao into battle.
  • Stout Strength: Aversion — he's big and a bit wide, but is of average strength and health. (Hyuuma frequently tells him to work out more, in fact.)

     Swan White

Voiced by: Hiroshi Naka (JP)

Chief of GGG China, and lead developer of Twin A.Is Fuuryu and Rairyu.

  • Asian and Nerdy: Even though GGG Japan's Leo and Liger are as Asian and nerdy as Long-Li, but Long-Li's mindset is less flexible compare to them when it comes to socialization.
  • Expy: Of Gendo Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He may be very prideful and demeaning of others, but he's willing to soften himself up to adapt new philosophies, and has the heart to do the right things for the right people.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: He turns them on sometimes when he's in the mood to be sinister.

GGG Mecha

     GGG Mobile Unit & Multi-Robos

Galeon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a43_6.png

An extraterrestrial robotic lion who saved Gai's life following his encounter with EI-01 and brought Mamoru to his foster parents.

Galeon is able to fuse with Gai to form the mechanoid GaiGar, and form the titular GaoGaiGar through Final Fusion with the Gao Machines.

  • Animal Mecha: He is a Lion Robot.
  • Black Box: On Galeon's back, containing information about G-Stone based technology, used as the basis for most of the robots in the cast.
  • Combining Mecha: Galeon can combine with Gao Machines to become Gaogaigar.
  • Noisy Nature
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The Amamis refer to Galeon as the "North Pole Lion", due to the circumstances under which they first met him (it wouldn't be surprising if the rest of the world did until GGG went public).
  • Papa Wolf: If Galeon senses that Mamoru is in trouble, he'll go help him. And actually hurting him will result in general rage. Kill him, and no god can help you.
  • Transforming Mecha: Can transform into Mechanoid Gaigar by fusion with Guy.

Hyoryuu (Ice Dragon) and Enryuu (Fire Dragon) are a pair of highly-advanced AI's developed by GGG, and installed in a pair of Transforming bodies; a crane and firetruck respectively. When the two brothers' sympa-rates reach 100%, they are both able to combine their bodies via Symmetrical Docking and merge into Chouryuujin (Super Dragon God).

Hyoryuu's the elder twin using a high tender voice, while Enryuu's the younger twin using a coarser voice.

  • An Ice Person: Hyoryuu's weapons.
  • Attack Reflector: Enryu's Mirror Shield.
  • Chest Blaster: Chest Thriller/Warmer, cold and hot respectively.
    • Also, SUPERNOVA!!
  • Combining Mecha: "Symmetrical Docking!" Note that Chouryuujin's personality seems to be Hyoryuu's expression (relatively polite) with Enryuu thinking ("I'm gonna stop that meteorite WITH MA CHEST!").
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Choryuujin gets cut straight down the middle by P-Vater, but given the nature of the combination, this does absolutely nothing to Horyuu and Enryuu themselves.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Chouryuujin primary objective is saving lives - if his life is all it takes to save a few lives, he'll deflect meteorites with his body.
  • Historical In-Joke: Chouryuujin killed the dinosaurs!
  • Hot-Blooded: Enryuu is, but Hyoryuu's closer to The Stoic. (They have a scene where they, twin robots that literally grew up together, argue about this in regard to which one of them is better suited to protecting Mamoru. note )
  • Playing with Fire: Enryuu's weapons.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Hyoryuu being the blue one and Enryu being the red one.
  • Running Gag: Enryuu never seems to be able to land properly. Eventually he just rolls with it, ultimately getting so good at it that he can catch a falling Eiffel Tower lift while landing.
  • The Slow Path: How they come back from one Heroic Sacrifice: by waiting and reactivating in the present.
  • Taking You with Me: SUPERNOVA's very powerful, but it requires the brothers to turn their ChestBlasters to "infinite" at point-blank range, forcing a win through temperature shock. But they don't walk away from it...

Fuuryuu (Wind Dragon) and Rairyuu (Thunder Dragon) are brother machines to Hyoryuu and Enryuu developed by GGG China. Their vehicle forms are a cement mixer and dump truck respectively, and by default, they would perform the symmetrical dock with each other forming Gekiryuujin (Assault Dragon God). When enhanced by THE POWER, they would be able to perform cross-symmetrical docks with their Japanese brothers to form Genryuujin (Mystical Dragon God) note , and Gouryuujin (Strong Dragon God). note

Fuuryuu's the elder twin using a proper high pitch voice, while Rairyuu's the younger twin using lower coarse voice. Both of them have a prideful yet obedient personality, but they softened up and became very polite once they got the hang of their Japanese brothers' way of socialization.

  • Arm Cannon: Fuuryuu's mixer barrel cover's Gekiryuujin (and Gouryujinu)'s arm.
  • Blow You Away: Fuuryuu.
  • Combining Mecha: Although unlike Choryuujin, Gekiryuujin seems to have Fuuryuu's thinking with Rairyuu's expression - he has a cool head, but is a little rude.
  • Hot Wings: Shan Tou Long / Maximum Tou Long
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Fuuryuu's the blue oni, Rairyuu's the red oni.
  • Running Gag: Enryuu's problem carries over to Rairyu.
  • Shock and Awe: Rairyuu's element.
  • Sky Surfing: Rairyuu rides his dumper to fly.
    • Which is ironic considering he's shown to be just as incompetent as Enryuu at landing.
  • Taking You with Me: Apparently, Gekiryuujin's been carrying around a powerful self-destruct device in his left shoulder. He uses this, in a Shout-Out to Getter Robo, to destroy Ptulone in FINAL.
  • Wind Is Green: Fuuryuu, natch.

Goldy Marg

Voiced by: Hisao Egawa (JP), Greg Abbey (EN)
An important Multi-Robo built to perform as the Hammer weapon. Goldymarg is also designed to be the sturdiest of GGG robots in order to protect GaoGaiGar from being damaged by their Goldion Hammer reaction upon execution. Given the short time frame of his creation, his AI was based on Geki Hyuuma rather than being developed from scratch like the others.
  • The Big Guy: He has a lazer cannon, but prefers to use his fists and his nigh-indestructible body in mechanoid form to fight. He knows how to use them, too; only King J-Der is physically stronger than he is.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: His whole personality.
  • Genius Bruiser: It doesn't come up much (Goldy's very much aware that he's the Finishing Move), but he IS based on GGG's mission planner. He does exactly the right thing when the 31 Primevals attack Orbit Base, for example.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Even though he doesn't have a mouth, in the last episode of FINAL, after Pisa Sol is destroyed, one could tell he was smiling before the screen faded to white.
  • Hot-Blooded: Well, his personality IS based on Geki Hyuuma, so...
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: The handle of the Goldion Hammer is the barrel of his tank form's gun. The tires of his tank form 'nails' in hand form.
  • Tank Goodness: His vehicle form is that of a tank.

Volfogg

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (JP), Marc Thompson (EN)

An AI Robot with the vehicle form of a police car developed for GGG's Intelligence Division, and assigned to protect Mamoru in battle. Can combine with the vehicles GunGrue and GunDober to form Big Volfogg.

  • Back from the Dead: Volfogg's AI is based off of an intelligence agent who was killed before the start of the series.
  • Badass Arm-Fold: Probably his signature stance, even his transformation sequences tend to end with it!
  • Combining Mecha: With the Gun Machines into Big Volfogg, who is much more suited to direct combat. (Unlike the other Yuusha Corps, they are the same person and not a gestalt personality.)
  • Expy: As the resident ninja robot that can transform into a police car, he harkens back to Shadow-Maru from Brave Police J-Decker.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: He consistently speaks politely and formally in the Japanese version, which helps reinforce his refined demeanor.
  • Helicopter Blender: Big Volfogg's Murasame Sword. Justified, as it's purpose-made and he's coating them with Mirror Particles during use - enough that it can double as a shield in a pinch.
  • Ninja: Justified, as he actually belongs to GGG's intelligence department and was designed around intelligence gathering and recon. In practice, Volfogg is closer to a Real Life ninja, while Big Volfogg resembles a fictional one.
    • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Almost literally even, since he is a ninja police robot and comes back from the dead a couple of times.
  • The Stoic: He largely remains calm, and he never raises his voice outside of battle.
  • Transforming Mecha: He can turn into a police car.

     The Mic Sounders Unit

Mic Sounders the 13th

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a47.png
Click to see his Boom Form (Close-up)
Boom Form (Full Body)
Voiced by: Mitsuo Iwata (JP)
A robot developed by GGG America. His default form has the appearance of a gigantic toy robot, gleefully serving as a transportation ship for GGG members to fly around town. But when things get serious, he would be able to transform into a badass rocker robot shooting out sound waves to distract or destroy his enemies depending on what "music disc" he's playing. His AI was based on Stallion White.
  • Badass Adorable: Mic is a Cute Giant toy robot who can turn into a humanoid mecha with The Power of Rock to empower the heroes or weaken the enemies.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: One second Mic is a complete goofball of a giant toy robot that just cannot be taken seriously. The next? He's a flying robot rock star and every time he puts on a concert, it can wreak havoc among his enemies! Good thing he performs for the good guys!
  • Bishōnen Line: He goes from a silly, cutesy, and cartoony-looking robot shaped vaguely like a jukebox to a humanoid mecha in his Boom Form.
  • Gratuitous English: A huge part of his gimmick - he sprinkles his speech with English terminology that the kids at home will probably be able to parse and talks like Japanese isn't his first language.
  • Keet: Mic is a lovey-dovey socializer who loves to stir up parties, parades, and mingle with humans; especially the kids. No other super robot in super robot history can top Mic in keet-ism.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: With his goofy appearance and demeanor, combined with how he frequently plays with the children, it's clear that he's meant to appeal to the younger audience members.
  • Lethal Joke Character: Contrary to show tradition, he is introduced as pretty goofy and completely harmless in his miniature Cosmo Robo form. However, after System Changing to his Boom Robo form, he reveals the ability to use sound waves to destroy anything on a cellular level. He would be a complete game-breaker if he didn't need to have special music discs created and tuned precisely to his specific target in advance, lest he accidentally destroy the Earth.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: His moveset. Without using special disks (stored in his flying platform "Studio 7" and inserted into the disk player in his chest), he can manipulate sound to have physical effects. With disks, he can do things like shatter objects by manipulating their specific frequencies - up to and including the Earth.
  • The Power of Rock / Musical Assassin: Plenty of both, since he can both use his music to empower the heroes or weaken the enemy.
    • There's a scene, just before GGG leaves for Jupiter, where he's playing in a concert for the Orbit Base staff.
  • Primary-Color Champion: There's no better way to show the world that he's "Made In USA".
  • Spell My Name With An S:
    • Mic himself isn't a problem... but his transport is. The eye-catches title it the "Baribarien", and it's spelled in kana as バリバリーン ("baribariin", essentially). Mic's pronunciation of it, however, often led fansubbers and others to call it things like "Barbarian" or "Barbareen", since the onomatopoeic connection it has is way less clear than some of Mic's other equipment ("baribari" is onomatopoeia for the ripping sound teeth can make... and what does the front of the vehicle look like?) "Baribarien" also doesn't lend itself terribly well to the phonetics actually used by バリバリーン.
    • Also, when it flips over and becomes Mic's stage, it's pretty clearly meant to be the "Studio 7"... but the eyecatch accidentally calls it the "Stadio 7". Whoops!
  • Theme Naming: Mic's equipment is largely named after the Japanese onomatopoeia which it invokes. The "Baribarien" is explained above; the "Giragirahn VV" keytar is related to the "kira-kira" sound effect, of sparkling or being dazzling; his Dokadokahn V microphone is a twofer, both an onomatopoeia for making noise and "dokaan" being the sound effect for an explosion (thus his title of "Boom Robo").
  • Unseen Prototype: Averted. Later on in the series we get to see the other 12 Mic Sounders robots.
  • Verbal Tic: "DA-MON-NE~!" "NE~!" when he's in his Cosmo mode, then "DA-ZEE!" "ZE!" for his Boom mode.
  • Wingding Eyes: From wacky text to slot machine, his Cosmo Form has this huge screen for his eyes to let him play with all kinds of fun emotions.

Civilians & Other Characters

Voiced by:
[Isamu] Kōzō Shioya (JP), Ed Paul (EN)
[Ai] Sayuri Yamauchi (JP), Eileen Stevens (EN)

Mamoru's adoptive parents. Isamu works at the Space Development Corporation note  while Ai is a stay-at-home mother. They tend to fret a bit when Mamoru might be in trouble.

  • Character Catchphrase: "Wah-Ha~!" It runs in the family.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Daddy Isamu would flip in happiness to welcome his son back home albeit by drifting and destroying their mail post.
  • Good Parents: Basically, they're the Japanese Kents: they lovingly raised a boy from another world as their own, who'd later become the savior of mankind. Hell, they even named him Mamoru, which means "to protect"; it's obvious they were raising him to be a good boy.
  • Meaningful Name: Mamoru's father is "Isamu", meaning "Bravery" or "Courage". His mother's name is "Ai", meaning "Love". Both are extremely valuable traits to pass down to their son.
  • Muggle Foster Parents: And, as far as Mamoru is concerned, they are his parents.

Hana's older middle school female cousin who's into masculine hobbies such as military mechanics, motorbike racing, and professional wrestling.

Kizuna Shishioh

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3e370474fcae7699c75116cc977bcdb5.png
Voiced by: Konami Yoshida (JP)
The wife of Leo Shishioh and Mother of Gai. She was an astronaut presumed dead from her crew's fatal space mission to explore Jupiter.
  • Death by Origin Story: Her presumed failed space mission is what inspired her son, Gai to follow her footsteps in becoming an astronaut, so that he would be able to have the chance to one day travel to Jupiter to investigate her cause of death. note
  • Posthumous Character: When she died at Jupiter, her spirit somehow survived thanks to THE POWER. She attempted to communicate with her son, but even with THE POWER, all she could do was project visions of her younger self silently expressing one of three emotions (the "Three Sisters") into Gai's optic processor, and only when Gai was in space. This was more than enough to save her son's life several times. During the battle at Jupiter near the end of the original series, she is reunited with Leo after his death, and the two of them are able to bestow THE POWER upon Gai and the other GGG Brave Robots.

Mamoru's Biological Parents

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a55_01.png
Voiced by:
[Cain] Koichi Chiba (JP)
[Cain's Wife] Masako Ikeda (JP)

The ruling couple of The Green Planet who developed Galeon, and sent off Galeon with their son, along with their planet's most valuable source material, the origial G-Stone away as Zonders destroy their planet. Among Mamoru's biological parents, only Mamoru's father is named.

  • Big Good: Cain is the one who created the G-Stones and Galeon, and embed his knowledge data within Galeon to allow the heroes to create the technology they need to fight the Zonders.
  • Moses in the Bulrushes: Sent their son away on Galeon to the Blue Planet (Earth) to escape the mechanicalization of their home planet by Zonders.
  • Posthumous Character: Long since dead but Cain's knowledge data is stored within Galeon.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Fragments of Mamoru's mother's conscience is saved amongst the G-Crystal base located on a natural satellite near the battle grounds against The 11 Planetary Masters of Sol. Mikoto is the only one who can hear her voice, with her image appearing in Mikoto's vision as she bids farewell to Mamoru and Kaidou at the end of FINAL.

     Mamoru's Classmates

Hana Hatsuno

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a42.png
Voiced by: Konami Yoshida (JP), Eileen Stevens (EN)

Mamoru's classmate who has a long-standing (mutual!) crush on him. Tends to get caught up in Zonder attacks throughout the show.

  • Character Catchphrase: "Kowakunai, Kowakunai..." ("I'm not scared, I'm not scared...") Mamoru taught it to her, back in Hokkaido. Given the dangers she often faces, it's more of a Survival Mantra.
    • Badass Creed: Hits a climax when she attacks the Zonderized Assistant Principal on her own.
  • Damsel in Distress: Poor girl.
  • Dog Walks You: Played as a Running Gag. Justified by Yosef being at least twice Hana's size. She has better luck with Yosef's puppies in FINAL - but there's a whole pack of them!
  • Nice Girl: She's a very kind child.
  • Puppy Love: Hana and Mamoru have a Childhood Marriage Promise dating back to when they lived in Hokkaido (4 years before the series started). They make good on it in the last episode.
  • Weirdness Magnet: At times, it's like the Zonders have their eye on her rather than Mamoru. (Luckily, at no point do they seem to be aware of her connection to Mamoru.)
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: After finding out that the Mamoru she knows is an alien, Hana starts to suspect that the original Mamoru was replaced by an alien doppelganger. Fortunately for all concerned, she's wrong.

Sueo "Ushii" Ushiyama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a49_6.png
Voiced by: Hiroaki Ishikawa (JP)

Another classmate of Mamoru and the youngest brother of Kazuo.

  • Animal Theme Naming: His family holds the surname of "Ox Mountain," and his friends uses the Affectionate Nickname of "Ushii" on him.
  • The Big Guy: Subversion - while he's definitely the largest of Mamoru's friends, his defining trait is his interest in military mechanics (some of which are leaked from his older brother) ...and he's probably not as strong as Reiko.
  • Expy: Of Takeshi Goda from Doraemon. But his personality and actions are no way near like a bully, and instead is a rather competent big brother figure towards his friends.

Takayasu Sunou

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a51.png
Voiced by: Tsutomu Kashiwakura (JP)
Another of Mamoru's classmates. Comes from a fairly rich family, and has a habit of trying to impress his friends with trendy techs and tales of family trips.
  • Expy: Of Suneo Honekawa from Doraemon.
  • Hair Flip: Does this a lot.
  • Idle Rich: Another big part of his personality.
  • Ocular Gushers: Resorts to these when either A) Reiko cuts him down a few notches or B) when he's caught up in a Zonder attack.
  • Rich Bastard: Shows signs of growing into this. That is, if Reiko hasn't humbled him out of it by then.

Reiko Komori

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a50.png
Voiced by: Miki Narahashi (JP), Annice Moriarty (EN)

Somewhat stuck-up classmate of Mamoru and Hana. Her family is even richer than the Sunous, and she takes great delight in one-upping Sunou or otherwise deflating him whenever he starts bragging.

  • Character Catchphrase: She loves to use the mixed-language phrase "chou very" (or "super very", fully translated) as an adjective for things.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: We find out in a CD Drama that her father is dead and her family, while once rich, is actually broke — we get a peek at this during episode 26 (when the gang thinks the rest of their class is dead, and Reiko simultaneously is a bit calmer and also a bit more morose about the idea), and that may be her cheap apartment that she's in front of in her first FINAL appearance. She hides this from her friends but acts 'rich' for seemingly this trope.
  • Hidden Depths: They don't get explored much — she's a very tertiary character after all — but they are there. One of the Drama CDs gives us a peek at it, and we also get a glimpse of it in episode 26 of the show itself. As noted, her father died before the start of the show, and it's clearly had an effect on the poor nine-year-old Reiko. In episode 26, in particular, she's a lot more philosophical about the idea of most of her classmates dying than a grade schooler has any right to be, and it's clear that a lot of her attitude is a front to avoid showing her friends her pain.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: She may detest the weaklings around her and have her own subordinates in school, but she's generally good to those she recognize as her friends from the bottom of her heart, and in particular she's a genuine friend to Hana.
  • The Nicknamer / Fun with Acronyms: Comes up with acronyms for just about anybody. Especially attractive males.
  • Precocious Crush: She's fallen pretty hard for her "long haired hunk", AKA Gai Shishioh. She is also highly annoyed to discover he's already taken.
  • Super-Strong Child: Hoists up Mamoru, Hana, Takayasu, and Usshii all at once as they attempt to save Hana dropping into the ocean when they were stuck on EI-02.
    • She picked up a teacher's desk and hurled it at a window trying to escape from a Zonderized vice principal.
  • Valley Girl: Has the voice and attitude of one in the English dub. What did you expect, since she's voiced by Annice Moriarty?
  • Woolseyism: Since the English dub only dubbed 25 episodes and didn't dub Episode 26, the episode where Reiko actually admits she's broke, the dub flanderizes her into a full-on rich girl with no signs of being broke whatsoever.

Valnar

A Killer Whale residing in G-Island Sea.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When GaoGaiGar has lost all of his energy fighting a powerful Zonder robo Valnar appears and has her G-Stone come in contact with GaoGaiGar's giving Gai the strength he needs to defeat the Zonder.
  • Emergency Transformation: She was brought to the brink of death after being purified and was transformed into a cyborg like Gai in order to survive.

Red Planet

Walking Spoiler Warning: Two members listed on this section shared identity relations to The Four Machine Kings, while one is in relations with Mamoru; for which the 3 characters will play important roles in the later half of the series which cannot be hidden. Readers are bound to be spoiled by reading the contents listed in this section.

     Ikumi Kaidou (Arma)

Voiced by: Sayuri Yamauchi (JP)

Born Arma from an alien planet coded as “Red Planet” who descended to Earth at birth, and happens to be adopted into the same neighborhood as Mamoru. Ikumi eventually became classmates with Mamoru; usually quiet and distant from people. He does not play any significant roles for most of the series until Soldato No.J-002, as Pizza of The Four Machine Kings begins to appear around him.

  • Artificial Human: Not especially played up, though.
  • Bloody Horror: Only shown as silhouette, but during his first confrontation with Palus Abel in episode 3 of FINAL, his body is completely twisted and mangled by her attack. However, when he is seen later attached to Pia Decem Pit's computer, he seems to be fine.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: A more familial version. Ikumi avoided becoming too attached to his human classmates and family in order to avoid hurting any of them when he was gone, and to avoid leaving any openings that enemies could exploit. It didn't work—not the first time, anyway.
  • Meaningful Name: Arma is Italian for "weapon".
  • Override Command: Palus Abel used him to shut down Soldato J's J-Jewel.
  • Psychic Powers: The first hint that there's something not quite right about Kaidou is when he starts throwing telekinetic blasts around.

Click to see him as Pizza (Zonderian Form/Human Undercover Form)
Voiced by: Mitsuaki Madono (JP)

Introduced as Pizza, the most aggressive and warlike of the Four Machine Kings. His martial pride causes him to clash with Gai at several points throughout the series and eventually causes him to remember details of his past.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Just when GaoGaiGar is on its knees and about to be torn limb from limb by three of the Primevals, the J-Ark shows up out of nowhere and blasts two of them to smithereens in the space of about a minute.
  • Cool Mask: Both his Zonderian form and original form have this.
  • Cool Plane: His victims usually employ a sky motif while he himself uses one in the final clash between GGG and the zonderians in Tokyo city.
  • Cool Starship: J-Bird and J-Ark
  • The Dragon: Is the most powerful of the Four Machine Kings and also the one that becomes Gai's rival.
  • Expy: Of Cyborg 002.
  • Fallen Hero: For the first half, but he eventually manages to pull himself back up.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Noticable since he turned before being purified by Ikumi.
  • Redemption Promotion: As Pizza, he was powerful enough to fight Gai to a standstill, but was held back by Pasdar's manipulations and couldn't lay a hand on the monster alone. As Soldato-J he's able to beat things that make Pasdar look pathetic in comparison.
  • The Rival: To Gai.
  • Sinister Schnoz: He has a pointy, beak-like nose and is one of the initial antagonists. The sinister aspect is subverted when he becomes his true identity of the heroic Soldato-J, as he retains said nose.
  • That Man Is Dead
Mamoru: You're Pizza of the Four Machine Kings!
Soldato-J: That was a false name! The man named Pizza is dead! I am J. Reborn by the J-Jewel as Soldato-J!

     Tomoro- 0117
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a25_2.png
Click to see him as Pinchernone ([Above] Zonderian Form / [Below] Human Undercover Form)
Voiced by: Tsutomu Kashiwakura (JP)

Introduced as the insidious and calculating member, Pinchernone of the Four Machine Kings. Pinchernone is best known for his sailor uniform/Monster Clown outfit and his downright creepy laugh. He serves as another foil for Pizza, whom he works most often with, and the two could almost be considered friends, if machine lifeforms can have friends. Pinchernone also develops a rivalry of sorts with Volfogg.

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: He IS a Zonderized computer, after all; and he gets better after purification.
  • The Brute: When the Zondarians take direct action and turn themselves into Zonder Robos, he's just about had it with Volfogg...
  • Cool Boat: Pinchernone's victims usually have some kind of naval motif, and his Zonderian form is that of a ship. Eventually, his true form is revealed to be Tomoro-0117, the main computer of J-Ark.
  • Cool Starship: Tomoro is the main computer A.I. of J-Ark.
  • Evil Laugh: BRRREEEEEEEEE!
  • Heel–Face Turn: Like Soldato J, he gets purified by Ikumi.
  • Humanoid Abomination: His human form barely looks human. His teeth are so massive, he's stuck with a permanent Slasher Smile. He's always sitting, even while falling. Also: BRRRREEEEEEEE~!note
  • Would Hurt a Child: As Pincherone, he often suggested eliminating Mamoru for his ability to purify Zonders, and occasionally directly went after him in his schemes.

     Soldato No.J- 019
A member of the Soldato-J army and the only other survivor aside from J-002.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Happened after he kills his Arma.
  • Doomed by Canon: Seeing as he wasn't mentioned by anyone before or afterwards...
  • Foil: To Soldato-J 002. Both are the only survivors of the Primeval War. Both were forced to wander the wastelands of their home planet and became Zonders. The differences are that Soldato-J 0019 became a Zonder of his own free will by smashing his J-Jewel and killing his Arma while Soldato-J 002 was brainwashed into becoming one and he still has his Arma after returning to normal.
  • And I Must Scream: 019's Arma managed to make him remember his past as a warrior, unfortunately she couldn't purify him completely so 019 was left as an slave of the Primevals.
  • Shadow Archetype: What 002 might have turned out if he'd never been freed from the Zonder menace.

     Arma 019
A female Arma that worked with Soldato No.J-019 until somehow they got separated, Arma would eventually reunite with her partner now as a servant of Primevals who would murder her, with her last strenght she made the warrior's memories return but failed to purify him.

     Abel
The leader of the Red Planet, she is responsible for many important devices and characters in the GaoGaiGar universe such as the Soldato-J Army, the J-Jewel, and the 11 Planetary Masters of Sol, just to name a few. While very little is known about her personally, her impact is felt across the series long after her demise.
  • Ambiguously Evil: It's honestly difficult to say as to whether or not she should be considered a Greater-Scope Villain or paragon, primarily due to the fact that almost nothing is known about her personality. On the one hand, Cain considered the creation of the Pas-Q machine so heinous the he created Genesic GaoGaiGar to stop it. On the other hand, she's also responsible for the creation of the Soldato-J army and the Arma, which includes J-002 and Kaidou, both of whom would prove instrumental in helping GGG save the universe time and time again. The closest we ever see of Abel is her doppelgänger, Palus Abel of the Sol Masters, which doesn't paint a pretty picture about the real Abel. Though given that Pei La Cain wound up being far more malicious than the real deal, her Sol Master counterpart might not a viable source for insight on what she was actually like. Ultimately, whether she was a Well-Intentioned Extremist who didn't realize the long-term consequences of her actions or merely the loser of an Evil vs. Evil power struggle against the Zonder is anyone's guess.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: If Palus Abel is any indication, she wasn't much older than Mamoru and Kaidou were at the beginning of the series.
  • Evil Counterpart: Or "Morally Ambiguous Counterpart" to Cain. Like Cain, she was the ruler of her planet and created her own countermeasures against the Zonder menace. However, she was far more extremist in her actions, which led to her being indirectly responsible for many of the perils Earth faces.
  • Fling a Light into the Future: Her creation of the Sol Masters and the Pas-Q machine was supposed to be this, as their purpose was to recreate the Trinary Solar System after the Zonder were defeated. Unfortunately…
  • Gender-Blender Name: "Abel" is typically a masculine name.
  • Posthumous Character: She presumably fell with the Red Planet.

Antagonists: Zonders

Living humanoid beings, human or alien, who gets infected with Zonder Metals will become "Zonders." Zonders will almost invariably fuse with mechanical objects and inorganic matter to form a biomechanical "Zonder Robo." These Zonder Robos would immediately seek out and eliminate the stress source from their hosts, then at a certain point will begin to produce Zonder Spores and mature into Zonder Metal Plants. Nearly all of them possess fast regeneration, can fuse with machines that are not protected by a G-Stone or GS Drive, and produce a force field that is referred to in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 as a Zonder Barrier.

A Zonderian can fuse with similar types of material to form a "Zonderian Robo," bearing similar properties to that of a Zonder Robo.

All Zonder Robos and Zonderian Robos are collectively identified by GGG using the code "EI," standing for "Extraterrestrial Intelligence".

     In General
  • The Assimilator: Zonder Metal can absorb machines, often replicating their functions. Strangely, it does not seem to absorb humans, even when they are inside the converted machines.
  • Bishōnen Line: Their life cycle goes shaggy, mechanical humanoid Blob Monster -> Robeast after fusing with a human -> Robeast seeding more Zonder Spores to make other Zonders -> Intelligent humanoid Zonderian with the capacity to become a Robeast if need be.
  • Gone Horribly Right: They were created to absorb stressful emotions and convert them into energy to relieve stress. They're still acting on that goal, they simply believe that they need to assimilate all life in the universe to do that.
  • Mechanical Abomination: Pasder and all of the Primevals are this. They're sapient pieces of the Z-Crystal, the object that controls everything that's been corrupted by Zonder Metal. They can create Zonder Metal within their bodies to create new minions, and they assimilate almost any material - including moons!
  • Our Monsters Are Weird: While many Zonders look like garden variety Humongous Mecha, there are some that become incredibly strange objects that barely look mechanical.
  • Robeast: Most of them are this, and all Zonders have the potential to grow into one.
  • Theme Naming: Every named Zonderian's name starts with P, except the Zonuda and Z-Master.
  • The Virus: New independent Zonder creatures seemingly can only be created through infecting sapient species.

Zonderians

     EI-01: Pasder
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/62da28d5_a066_41a5_9688_d5e3efcbe369.png
Voiced by: Kenichi Ogata (JP)

The original Extraterrestrial Intelligence that landed on Earth at the beginning of the show, hence its designation. Pasder spends the next two years regaining his strength before finally reawakening and summoning four Machine Kings to begin the process of slowly Zonderising the entire planet. As soon as he finds out that Galeon is awake, he orders all four to hunt down and destroy the "Legacy of Cain" (No, not that one) but is ultimately defeated by our heroes with a liberal application of hammer to the face.

  • Arc Villain: Of the first half of the series.
  • Dark Lord on Life Support: Was badly injured after his crash landing in the backstory of the show.
  • Dirty Coward: Downplayed Trope. Pasder doesn't cower in fear and puts up one hell of a fight against GGG when forced to, but at the same time he never once takes one step out of his hideout and is visibly fearful and hateful of Mamoru as the "Legacy of Cain."
  • Disk-One Final Boss: Though his defeat seemingly signals the end of the Zonder menace, he is immediately succeeded by the 31 Machine Primevals.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He possesses a deep, booming voice and is quite evil.
  • One-Winged Angel: Takes a giant humanoid form whose lower body is fused with the entire city of Tokyo. Swan describes it as if it were Satan.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: While we the audience know his name, GGG only ever refer to him by the codename they gave him: EI-01.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Doesn't personally take direct action against the GGG, until episode 30.
  • Satanic Archetype: Is likened to one by Swan after taking on his gigantic humanoid form. Pasder is an evil being that fell from the sky, dwells deep underground, and works through minions he corrupted into their current hideous forms. Swan may not have been too far off the mark.
  • Tokyo Tower: After absorbing a large amount of machines, Pasder disappears to hide under Tokyo Tower for 2 years.

Primada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a53.png
Human Undercover Form / Zonderian Form
Voiced by: Sayuri Yamauchi (JP)

The most outgoing and playful of the four Machine Kings. Primada usually appears as a ballerina with clothes made of car parts, and is almost always dancing in her on-screen appearance

  • Dance Battler: She incorporates her ballet skills into her technique when fighting in her human form.
  • Cool Car: She doesn't have one, but her Zonderised victims usually take the form of one, and also sometimes motorcycles.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's the sole female member of the Four Machine Kings.

Often taking the human form of a silent old train conductor, Polonaise is the most unassuming of the four Machine Kings.

Zonder Robos

     EI- 02 to EI- 74

EI-02: Garbage Amalgam Robo

The second EI, and the first Zonder faced in the show. He was formed from a homeless man from Garbage Island named Kinzou Kodakarayama's desire for revenge against City Hall.
  • Animal Motifs: Horses. Kinzou had bet money on horse races which he lost, causing him great stress.
  • Fire/Ice Duo: It's arms had a freezing beam and a heat ray.
  • Starter Villain: The first Zonder Robo that GaoGaiGar fought.

EI-03: Iron Ball Machine Robo

A Zonder formed from the aggressive reigning champion of the SMW Pro Wrestling League, Bomber Death, merged with both the wrestling ring he was on and a nearby demolition crane.

EI-04: Triple Locomotive Robo

A Zonder formed from Youichi Yamanoguchi, a troubled boy who envied the power of steam locomotives, merging with a near-by steam locomotive.

EI-05: Space Shuttle Robo

A Zonder formed from Youichi Yamanoguchi, who escaped due to Mamoru not being there to purify him. He merges with a Space Development Corporation space shuttle mounted to a new type of engine.

EI-06: Trailer Robo

EI-07: Tanker Robo

EI-08: 300-Series Shinkansen Robo

EI-09: Airship Robo

EI-10: Motorbike Robo

EI-11: Submarine Robo

EI-12: Isolde Robo

EI-13: Mascot Machine Robo

EI-14: Military Transport Robo

A Zonder formed from Dave, a bullied crew member merged with a large, military-transport aircraft.
  • Bishōnen Line: At first it resembled a monstrous plane. After absorbing the destroyed tanks and attack helicopters, it reformed into a humanoid Humongous Mecha.
  • Curbstomp Battle: While GaoGaiGar is initially hindered by EI-14's fog and pinned down by its hail of gunfire, lacking Big Volfogg's defenses against such things, GaoGaiGar is nonetheless easily able to destroy the Zonder once ChoRyuJin's Eraser Head dissipates the fog.
  • Expy: Its final form heavily resembles a MS-06 Zaku II from Mobile Suit Gundam.
  • Flunky Boss: It sent an army of radio-controlled tanks and attack helicopters to dealt with Volfogg, only entering direct combat after they were all destroyed.
  • Sudden Lack of Signal: A key component of EI-14's battle is the communications-disrupting fog that covers the battlefield, isolating its targets to make them easy prey for the armed vehicles it controls.

EI-15: GGG Mecha Parts Robo

Born from Minoru Inubouzaki, a tech genius with a grudge with Entouji. He fused with the GGG base's operating system until he was stopped by Entouji's and Volfogg's actions, before being purified he manage to reach the maintenance hangar where the GaoMachines spare parts are kept which were absorbed to turn into its Zonder Robo form.

EI-16: Long-Range Cannon Robo

A Zonder formed from a young man studying for the Tokyo University entrance exams. He is merged with the Schwerer Gustav unit 2, "Dora", one of the Nazi railway guns developed during World War II.
  • BFG: An 80cm cannon on rails, the original of which was able to destroy targets that were heavily fortified or even underground. EI-16 uses it to demolish universities and attempts a direct hit on GaoGaiGar.
  • Combat Tentacles: The rails that EI-16 runs on are also part of it, and it uses them to immobilize GaoGaiGar so it can line up a shot.
  • Fixed Forward-Facing Weapon: The original Gustav's cannon could not turn horizontally, only vertically. EI-16's cannon has the same restriction, but it can change its facing via Zonder shapeshifting.
  • Long-Range Fighter: The Gustav was siege artillery designed to fire from very long distances, and GGG has difficulty pinpointing what is even causing the destruction from EI-16's shots for this reason. However, the Zonderized version of the cannon is not nearly so defenseless at close range as the original.
  • Mighty Glacier: It's enormous and powerful, but it hardly moves at all during the actual battle, not even having a Humongous Mecha form.
  • Removed Achilles' Heel: Several times when GGG attempts to plan around the original Gustav's shortcomings, EI-16 is able to circumvent them with its Zonder abilities. First, it's able to fire a second shot after its first much sooner than expected, forcing ChoRyuJin to try and block the second shot with his body. Next, when GaoGaiGar attempts to sneak up on it from behind, the Zonder uses the surrounding rails to restrain GaoGaiGar and simply shapeshifts to face it.

EI-17: Tire Robo

EI-18: Micro-Machine Amalgam Robo

  • Doing In the Wizard: Its strange appearance and abilities are due to manipulating nanomachines rather than magic.

EI-19: Science Lab Robo

  • Breather Boss: While its use of hostages doesn’t make it an effortless fight, it fails to meaningfully damage any of the protagonist mechs whereas Zondar from EI-15 upwards managed to disable at least one of them per skirmish.

EI-20: Gravity Manipulator Robo

EI-21: B-52 Bomber Robo

EI-22: Weather Star Robo

EI-23: Sound Robo Alpha

EI-24: Sound Robo Beta

EI-25: SeaDart Robo

EI-26: Pizza Robo

EI-27: Pinchernone Robo

EI-28: Polonaise Robo

EI-29: Primarda Robo

EI-72: Gold Tiger Robo & EI-73: Silver Puma Robo.

Two Zonder Robos born from Koutaro Taiga and Geki Hyuuma after being attacked by the Arm Primeval. Exclusive to Blockaded Numbers.
  • Caped Mecha: In their combined form.
  • Fusion Dance: The two merge together to become one giant robot.
  • No-Sell: Absorbs the Goldion Motor to prevent the Goldion Hammer from being used on it.

EI-74: Signal Robo

Antagonists: 31 Machine Primevals

     ZX- 01 to ZX- 31

ZX-01 Fist Primeval, ZX-02 Hair Primeval & ZX-03 Jaws Primeval

The first Primevals that attacked Earth.
  • Curbstomp Battle: They give one to GaoGaiGar, and end up receiving one from King J-Der.

One of the 31 Primevals, and the one that gets the most screentime.
  • Arch-Enemy: To J because of their shared history.
  • The Dragon: To Pagliaccio and Heart Primeval. May also qualify as The Heavy, since he is the most active of the Primevals.
  • Gravity Master: He can create and control gravity shockwaves with surprising precision, to the point that he claims that they're "undodgeable".
  • Morphic Resonance: All of the forms he takes has a huge arm.
  • Red Right Hand: Almost literally: his right arm is huge.
  • Tin Tyrant: Briefly appears as one during a flashback to a fight between him and Soldato J.

A seemingly robotic clown who gives orders to the 31 Primevals. Oddly, neither GGG nor the J warriors take note of its presence.

The combined form of the 31 Primevals and the master program controlling every Zonder Metal and Zonder lifeform in the universe.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: It was created to manage the Zonder Metal that turned stressful emotions into energy until it went rouge.
  • All Your Powers Combined; As the fusion of all the Primevals it has access to all their powers.
  • Assimilation Plot: Its plan involves assimilating all the universe lifeforms so there won't more negative emotions.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It's an enormousnote  vaguely humanoid being with only eye that can produce Zonder Metal with no issues.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Its destruction stopped the Earth's Zonderisation.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Its existence is the reason of all the conflicts in the show.
