Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

From the Fan Wank Transformers bullet:

A fan author named Stormcloud seems bound and determined to use every Beast Wars character not in the show in his fics. The end result was fight scenes that were so step-by-step and plotted out that they resembled a pre-publishing RA Salvatore, with character names made up of bad animal puns.

[up][up]Yeah... That and at least one other service. No special handling involved, and I can't imagine how convoluted and messed up the implementation would have to be to actually have issues with such a query.

If I recall, that entry used to be discussing the snarky Easter Egg response the site once gave when checking itself, and apparently when the site removed that joke someone just reworded the entry.

Well, it looks like the original entry was a ZCE. This explains a lot.

I'm voting just to remove it; it's not an example now and there's nothing in the history for us to work with regarding its former example status.

Reposting from the previous page, probably for the last time as I've no idea how many times I'm allowed to do that:

So...a while ago, I noticed a trope of mine from was removed from the Ray Fox YMMV page:

  • Audience Awareness Advantage: Despite that Meva City despises Ray from chapters 1 through 3, its easier for the audience to be critical of Morales and the Meva Province while being sympathetic to Ray given that unlike the citizens, they know what actually happens in full context.

For reasons I cannot get into without potentially violating community guidelines on rehashing stuff, Fighteer and I have agreed it's a bad idea for me to even edit and revise anything I've written on that page, so I've no intentions of changing anything.

With that said; how is this not an example? I don't know if this is the right place to ask but I figured vice versa applies with this section of the website.

It doesn't look wrong so much as insufficiently explained. Reading that doesn't at all tell us how or why the audience's thoughts might differ from the character's.

Found this on Kingdom Hearts:

  • Woolseyism: In the Japanese version, the Chernabog battle has the same music as any other Disney villain battle. In English? What else?

Can Woolseyism apply to battle music? I know this trope is for dialogue but not sure if this counts as an example.

This example looks like it should be Very Loosely Based on a True Story from Straight Outta Compton:

  • Broad Strokes: Generally, the movie is stated to be this by the people involved in the real-life events with a few notable exceptions. Several of the more unbelievable scenes, however, actually did occur.

and Ghost Busters IDW Comics seems to have possible trope misuse:

  • Broad Strokes: While the movies are the main basis of this continuity, the events of the 2009 video game which had different versions for different consoles and some stuff from the Real Ghostbusters cartoon are also part of the backstory.

would the stuff that got cut here and here count as "troping real life people"? everything that was cut was either about a Let's Play type of streamer or stuff they've made outside of streaming, nothing about who they actually are as a person (which is what i initially assumed the gripe was).

i was asked to come here after an ATT thread regarding potentially sketchy cutting reasons, but the conversation ended up becoming "don't revert this because it's troping real life people", so i'm here to confirm if that's indeed the case.

[up] I would say not necessarily. Many of the items cut here referred to the creative content they put out, such as a Series Mascot or a Twitter shitposting account that posts strange but ultimately fictional tweets.

I was told to skaddle over here for this question... If a work contains both nightmare sequences and ordinary dream sequences, can they both be listed under Dream Sequence on the work's page, or should they be split between the two tropes as appropriate? Nightmares and ordinary dreams can serve the same narrative purpose of revealing a character's hidden feelings, though nightmare sequences specifically have more uses, I think.

[up][up]this is basically what i said over on ATT, but people seemed to disagree... literally nothing about it was pertaining to recent real life drama, and even the person who committed the cut realized they did it erroneously. anyone else have any other thoughts?

personally, it kind of doesn't make any sense to throw the "don't trope real people" rulebook at at an online persona (see: here), but that's just my opinion.

The music video by Ryuusee of Neru's Vocaloid song "Law-Evading Rock" includes a figure named the Law-Evading Prince at 1:50-54, who looks suspiciously like Joker as a civilian in Persona 5.

I would like to make sure whether it's an intentional Shout-Out or not.

For comparison's sake, I show their appearances. Note that while Joker's eyes are black in the following image, they are sometimes depicted as bright red in other artworks:

I created the page FanFic.The Clinton Fics but are these tropes used properly:

  • Alternate History: Although it's a minor change from real history, chanfes from real life did occur that were minor.
  • invokedAnonymous Author: The author's identity was not known, and "Joe Wilson" (the author's name on the sites) was stated to be "a pseudonym for security purposes".
  • Artistic License – History: Bill Clinton never visited Chile in 1997, and did not visit Santiago at all.
Also, the following other things did not happen:
  • Bill Clinton did not have a Japanese-American woman as Secretary of Health and Public Services, that role was filled by Donna Shaiala, a Lebanese-American.
  • Monica Lewinsky did not do a BBC News 24 interview in London about the affair with Bill Clinton.
  • Tony Blair and Bill Clinton did not do a CNN interview together in-studio, although this was included for alternate history reasons.
  • Out of Focus: Al Gore does not get much of a role, if any, in the stories and is only there to provide a mouthpiece for Bill Clinton on certain things.
  • Pretty Fly for a White Guy: The author turned Bill Clinton into this, probably for comedy purposes, when the real Bill Clinton was nothing like this.
  • Real-Person Fic: The fanfic qualifies as this, although it's got more of an alt-history bent than any of the traditional features of this genre.
  • Stylistic Suck: The website was created in August 2011 but looked far more like a Geocities site from the 2000s, right down to use of Comic Sans MS font.

Is the following example from Kung Fu (2021) being used correctly, as I was under the impression that Fandom Rivalry needed to go both ways?:

Also from the same page is this example being used correctly?:

[up]3:

  • Shout-Out: I don't know Joker and dark-haired guy in a suit seems like a fairly common character design. Is there anything else that could point to it being a reference? You may wanna ask this in the Persona forums as well since folks here might not know more than me.

[up][up]Most of those are Zero-Context Example. I notice you have a tendency to say "this happens" instead of actually listing the context. For example:
  • Alternate History: You just say "Minor changes from history happen" twice. What minor changes?

I think that page has a bigger problem as well; it doesn't seem verifiable at all, which is a requirement for work pages.

[up]: Yeah, I think Fandom Rivalry should go both ways. Gratuitous Special Effects wants to be Special Effects Failure.

Does the example from Stuart Saves His Family seem more like it should be Misaimed Marketing rather than Uncertain Audience?:

  • Uncertain Audience: Al Franken noted in an interview with Vanity Fair twenty years later about the film's marketing attracting the wrong audience. It was aimed at Saturday Night Live fans, while the film was a dramedy focusing on serious subjects like addiction, verbal abuse, and family trauma.
Al Franken: Somebody wrote a review that said something like, "Watching Stuart Saves His Family go into the multiplexes is like watching a platoon of rookie soldiers head into an ambush. The people who will like this movie won’t go to it, and the people who will go to it won’t like it."

And from the same page is the following example being used correctly?:

  • Misblamed: No one intended Stuart Saves His Family to be an "SNL" film. Ramis read Franken's "Daily Affirmations" book and thought that it would make a great basis for a movie. The fact it was based on a sketch from the series was almost coincidental. Unfortunately, Paramount Pictures had no idea how to promote the film except as an "SNL" sketch movie.

I found this example in Acclaimed Flop that reads a little weirdly:

  • While The Legend of Korra got positive reviews (minus the Sophomore Slump), it never managed to do well in traditional viewership numbers past its first season. Because of its Darker and Edgier nature, the second season was moved to Friday night from Saturday morning despite the show being targeted at teens/ young adults. Its ratings tanked after the move but it continued to do well on Nick's website and other digital platforms. Eventually, it was outright pulled from the live schedule and moved online but whether or not it was due to the ratings or the content (the second episode shown exclusively online had a brutal, unambiguous murder by asphyxiation on-screen) isn’t definitively known even though Nick said they had always planned to do it.

I don't know if this show is considered a flop since, from what I understand, it is still quite popular and did well during its original run. The entry, however, reads like it's unsure of what it's trying to say. I'm hoping someone more familiar with the series can weigh in.

It's also the subject of an almost edit war (I say "almost" because the third person who re-added the entry was not the original writer of the entry).

I'm considering adding an example to Literal-Minded about the game show Let's Make a Deal and its Zonk prizes, which are often literal versions of popular prizes. Write-up here:

  • On Let's Make a Deal, many of the Zonk joke prizes on the series are literal versions of different kinds of prizes. Examples include "Horse Shoes" (shoes that look like a horse), a "Coin Purse" (a purse that resembles and is the size of a coin), and "Laundered Money" (money hanging from a clothespin).

I am worried, however, that it violates Examples Are Not General. Is there some way to include this example without making it too general?
