Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

What mediums can Sequel Gap apply to? The description states that it can’t apply to Sequel Series or Continuity Reboots, but if that’s the case, then there’s lots of misuse in the examples. Furthermore, can it apply to seasons of TV series? And what about comic books? Can it apply when there’s a large gap between issues of a single comic? Could it apply to fanfictions?

It’s quite confusing, and I need to know what can apply or not, since I’m sponsoring Speedy Sequel, which will serve as the inverse of Sequel Gap.

Are the following examples from War On Everyone being used correctly?:

  • Depraved Bisexual:
    • Mangan gets out of bed with a woman and a man in an obvious post-coital situation to go and behead Padraic. Given that he's in the middle, it's fair to assume the woman wasn't the only one being "shared."
    • Mangan drops some not-so-subtle hints of this in his introductory scene, where he intimidated Birdwell by describing violent anal sex as both the worst and best thing about jail.
  • Dirty Cop: Bob and Terry regularly augment their salaries by shaking down small-time crooks, including planting drugs and beating up anyone who looks sideways at them.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Zigzagged. Mangan has two young daughters, but the fact that he allows Birdwell, a confirmed pedophile, around them doesn't bode well.

^^ That should get its own Trope Talk thread; discussing the scope of a trope is beyond this thread’s purview.

^ Depraved Bisexual: Yes. Dirty Cop could explicitly say they are cops but otherwise yes. Even Evil Has Loved Ones doesn’t really show how he cares for them.

Does this one fit? I found this example in the RL section of Victorious Loser:

  • While Bernie Sanders and Andrew Yang lost the 2020 Democratic Presidential Primaries to Joe Biden, their ideas gained more traction and acceptance among mainstream Democrats. As part of his pact with Sanders, Biden agreed to some of his key platforms like student loan forgiveness and raising the minimum wage to $15/hour. Likewise, Yang's campaign propelled him into the national spotlight and lead to people opening up to his idea of Universal Basic Income. The economic recession caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic further gained credence to minimum wage raised and guaranteed income.

Comparing it to the Barry Goldwater example, this example seems rather weak. As far as I know, there's still no federal minimum wage or student loan forgiveness in the US and I'm not sure if Bernie Sanders was, at some point, expected to win the election. Maybe someone who knows about US politics can help out.

[up] Politics guy and American here, Bernie was indeed the frontrunner at one point. And there has been more acceptance of progressives in general, Biden has done some things that the progressives have wanted such as withdrawing from the war in Yemen and the Democrats did legitimately fight for the minimum wage increase. On top of that Bernie Sanders is now Senate budget chair and another progressive, Ohio senator Sherrod Brown, is now banking chair, so the progressives have gotten some traction. Yang I don't think was ever a frontrunner, although he is currently running for mayor of New York City and is ahead in the polls, so...maybe?

Not sure if Bernie or Yang were completely victorious, there's still some resistance to their ideas within the Democratic Party and America as a whole, so maybe they don't fit, at least not yet. The example should have waited some time, things could change rapidly or stay the same. Too soon.

The most that can be said is that the more progressive Dems have pushed the Overton window to the left, and so a higher minimum wage, student loan forgiveness etc. is even in mainstream conversation. But I don't like it; it's too contentious and falls into the pitfall of troping real-life politics.

[up] That too. The entry is possibly too contentious. Right now the divide in the Democratic Party is still really ugly, as the Neera Tanden nomination debacle (and pretty much anything political on Twitter or Reddit) has shown, so maybe just delete the entry for being too contentious.

I think we're steering way too far into taking political sides, which should be a strong no on RL examples of any trope.

On ComicBook.Crisis On Infinite Earths, I found these zero-context examples which need looking at:

I've not read the comic, only seen the Series.Crisis On Infinite Earths 2019 Alternate Continuity adaptation, so can't fix the work page for the comic-book.

Also for Franchise.Lupin III :

  • Public Domain: The work effectively is de facto in the public domain for complex reasons relating to copyright law, and the name Arsene Lupin had fell into common use, although the original work of literature that the series' source material derives from, Arsène Lupin was still under copyright at the time!

Is this a legitimate Bad Boss example? It comes form a mystery TV show.

When an employee doesn't lock up Paul's store, allowing vandals to get in, Paul fires the guy despite his apologies and offer to help repair the damage. Then, after being exposed as a Serial Killer and with nothing left to lose, Paul goes back and kills the poor guy.

[up][up][up]The Writers Cannot Do Math example is very terse but doesn't seem to lack in context.

Edit: I mean, it's easy to improve:

  • Writers Cannot Do Math: An infinite number of universes is destroyed... one at a time in a finite amount of time — which is mathematically impossible.

Thanks. My concern is about whether there's an overlap. When Paul kills Theo (the employee) he's no longer his employee, while at the time Theo is his employee Paul shouts at him harshly and fires him albeit under somewhat understandable circumstances. Do the two overlap enough?

On the Mandalorian Trivia page, should I put this under Teasing Creator or Trolling Creator?

  • In between the releases of Chapters 11 and 12, Insider asked Ming-Na Wen if she believed in the chance of Lucasfilm bringing back Fennec Shand, last seen unconscious from a gunshot to the chest in Chapter 5. Wen answered with an incomplete, "She got shot at close range. So...," then told the reporter to start a #FennecLives petition. Unbeknownst to Insider, Wen already filmed three new Mandalorian appearances, the first of which dropped about two weeks after the article's posting.

Been going through the Pokémon character pages lately and found a few issues.

  • Shellos and Gastrodon are listed as being examples of Stock Ness Monster when the only thing they have in common with the creature is their body shape. Is this a valid example?
  • Lots of Pokemon have examples that are just Name of Trope: Can learn X move. Advice on how to improve this type of example?
  • Some Pokemon have The Dreaded listed as a trope, with the corresponding example being that they have the Intimidate ability (debuffs their opponent's Attack). Is this misuse?
  • The character sheet for the Pikachu family has these listed as examples of The Artifact. Are they misuse?
    • Pikachu remains the Series Mascot, but its role in marketing for the entire Pokemon franchise, outside of the anime, has been downplayed slightly in Gen VI. Unlike a few other Pokemon, it hasn't received very many new features or gratuitous appearances outside of the anime and its merchandising, apart from Pokémon Speak in the games and a slight increase in base stats. Pikachu being outdated was actually acknowledged by Game Freak themselves in a TV program on Japan's NHK network, which also showed that for this reason, they created a new Pikachu character with a more mature personality for Detective Pikachu.
    • Raichu became an artifact pretty much as soon as Yellow Version came out towards the end of Gen I. After Pikachu solidified itself as not only the mascot, but having a reputation of never wanting to evolve, Raichu became little more than a bully to be upstaged by its unevolved form every 4 or 5 seasons in the anime. Notably, none of the Pikaclones in future generations even have the option of a 'Raichu' form, staying Pikachu-like forever. Competitively, Pikachu can have better offense than Raichu if it has a Light Ball, and better defense if it has Eviolite, meaning Raichu only consistently outdoes it in Speed and HP. And Gen VI continued the non-evolving trend by introducing Cosplay Pikachu instead of a potential "Mega Raichu." This ended after 19 years when Pokémon Sun and Moon gave Raichu an Alola form with a brand-new Ability and one-of-a-kind Z-move.

To address the concerns in order:

  • Shellos and Gastrodon are just based off slugs. Bulbapedia doesn't mention any elements in common with the Loch Ness monster. If any Pokemon counts for the trope, it'd probably be Lapras.
  • For tropes about moves, explain what the move does and how it relates to the trope. Personally I think it's a bit redundant to list that for every Pokemon that can learn the move, though, unless it was once their Secret Art.
  • The Dreaded does fit the impact of Intimidate (terrifies opponents as soon as the Pokemon enters battle), so maybe it could fit?
  • I don't think Pikachu is The Artifact at all. Besides the fact Pikachu wasn't designed specifically to be the series mascot (originally Clefairy was gonna be the mascot), it's still very prominent in not just the merchandising and anime, but the games. Pokémon GO constantly has themed Pikachu, and we very recently had a main series game that was partly themed around Pikachu. And Raichu still exists in later games and it's just as important as any other Pokemon, so I don't see how it's The Artifact here. Plus the entry admits that Raichu became relevant again in Gen 7.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

This example from RWBY was removed from TheDogBitesBack.Web Original:

  • Adam had been abusive to Blake, being manipulative, possessive, even slicing off Yang's arm to torment Blake and outright trying to kill her for leaving after she couldn't stomach his atrocities anymore. Later, he stalks her across Anima before getting Blake alone, leading to a one-sided battle as he tries to murder her. However, Yang eventually shows up and the girls resolve to defend one another, culminating in them killing Adam by stabbing him with shards of Gambol Shroud.

Is this a true example and if so, should it be put back?

~lizardgai4 and I cannot reach an agreement whether the example below belongs to Dream Emergency Exit (doing this in a dream wakes you up) or Slap Yourself Awake (self-inflicted pain keeps you awake).

Garfield and Friends: In "Fair Exchange", Garfield dreams about switching bodies with his owner Jon. Garfield pinches himself in order to stop dreaming.

I think SYA's sub-definition "self-inflicted pain breaks illusion" is close enough and explicitly excluded such examples from DEE when I launched it, but lizardgai4 thinks (I guess) the trope's about staying awake and not really related to dreaming.

Slap Yourself Awake is keeping yourself awake by inflicting pain, not when you're already asleep and dreaming. Still conscious and actually slapping v. asleep and dreaming of slapping.
