Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Asking, since it doesn't include actual shooting, but is functionally identical.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

  • You Wouldn't Shoot Me: During the bridge stand-off in the end, [spoiler: Indy threatens to cut the bridge down, preventing the Thuggees from getting the Sankara stones via Heroic Sacrifice. Mola Ram pushes Willie and Short Round on the bridge, assuming that Dr. Jones wouldn't sacrifice his own friends and even openly goads him to go on with his threat while nonchalantly marching on the bridge. Cue Indy cutting the rope anyway, much to the shock of everyone].

You Wouldn't Shoot Me, as written, seems very much about guns in particular. I don't think this example works, it feels like a different trope.

I've posted this several times now and I still haven't gotten a response:

Would this count for Already the Case:

  • An episode of Perfect Strangers had Larry, Balki, Jennifer, and Mary Ann take a trip to a ski lodge where their cabin gets buried by an avalanche. Larry and Balki try to dig an escape tunnel, but only manage to tunnel back to the buried cabin. Larry is about to give up when Balki gives him a speech on perseverance. He concludes the speech with "If George Washington had given up at Valley Forge, we'd all be speaking English now!"

[up] That sounds more like Walk into Mordor. Already the Case implies that Balki had outside access from the cabin for whatever reason (like having long arms to stick out the window, what have you) so I'm not sure why it's listed under that trope.

Would this be Bunny-Ears Lawyer or Success Through Insanity? It seems like the latter, but the way the page reads I'm not sure if a certain level of insanity is required and, if so, if this entry reaches it.

  • The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You: Miss Naddy is an inverse-Occidental Otaku, a Japanese woman who loves America so much she dresses in a skimpy cowgirl outfit and regularly speaks in mangled Gratuitous English/Cowgirl drawl. In chapter 118, this gets her in trouble in her job as a Japanese language teacher when a senior teacher gives her warnings about her incomprehensibility. While that issue is resolved, a bonus page for the chapter reveals that very incomprehensibility is key to Naddy's success. Having to parse Naddy's nonsense makes the students engage with the material more, to the point they were paying less attention when she was being made to speak more normally.
Her completely borked language is interesting enough to keep the class engaged. Not only that, because they have to concentrate harder to decipher what she says, student grades have actually gone up since Naddy started teaching. How stupid is that?

[up][up] That's not the part I was talking about. The part I thought might be Already the Case was Balki saying "If George Washington gave up at Valley Forge, we'd all be speaking English now." despite the fact that English is the official language of the United States.

That is absolutely Already the Case, yes. It might help to trim down the text before that part, since it seems to be distracting.

[up][up] Ah, then yes.

[up] Yeah, I'm not really sure why there was so much extra information. It could still say though if Balki's line is --> potholed to that or just appears under the other info.

ETA: If you find a way to keep the info about how they "only manage to tunnel back to the buried cabin" I would still recommend potholing that to Walk into Mordor since there's enough context.

Is this Epiphora, even though the "blackshirt" lines aren't right after each other?

  • SCP Foundation: From an untitled song of Incident Log: 6382-SCN-02: "Blackshirt", in two different verses and spread with a line between repetitions:
    You ain't shit, blackshirt
You just a number in a ledger, you be leavin' on a stretcher
    'cuz you dead, blackshirt
And they don't cry for screws, ain't that the truth
    You ain't shit, blackshirt
Callin' momma for instructions on the eve of your destruction

    You ain't shit, blackshirt
Them Guccis ain't for runnin', and you know the end is comin'
    Better hide, blackshirt
Or you'll drown in the flood of your own blue blood
    You ain't shit, blackshirt
Shriekin' orders down the phone until your ass is overthrown

    You ain't shit, blackshirt
Your bullshit won't protect you from that thing what's gonna wreck you
    When it ends, blackshirt
'cuz it's comin' down soon, and you ain't immune
    You ain't shit, blackshirt
We gonna empty out them cells and blow your asses all to hell

[up](x5) I guess Bunny-Ears Lawyer because she keeps her job, which she's good at, despite being noticeably quirky. I don't think it's Success Through Insanity because it seems more like she's really eccentric rather than unstable.

[up]I don't think it counts because not every line ended with "blackshirt" and Epiphora examples seem to involve every line ending the same string of words.

Reposting. In Characters.Yu Yu Hakusho Main Villains, Jerkass is listed in Elder Toguro's folder. However, a Sub-Trope (i.e. Jerk with a Heart of Jerk) is already listed. Can I delete his Jerkass entry?

[up] That's where I'm at. Naddy isn't unstable. It's made clear Naddy can turn her 'Muricanism off as needed. In fact the chapter starts because her doing so triggers an Out-of-Character Alert from the rest of the cast.

At the same time, my understanding of the distinction of the two tropes is a Bunny-Ears Lawyer is successful despite their quirks, where Success Through Insanity is someone who is successful because of them, and Naddy is firmly in the latter.

I don't know if Misaimed Fandom has a cleanup, but this was just added to Inside Out.

  • Misaimed Fandom: The film is supposed to be a visual representation of the mind of a child when growing up, essentially a Coming of Age Story set within the mind itself. Looking at the film metaphorically, joy and sadness get "sucked out of the mind" trying to keep core memories intact from the interference of sadness, allowing anger, disgust, and fear to build up, causing you to break down your former personality traits in an aimless attempt to become joyful and sad again. Once joy and sadness return using the strength of imagination, your emotions combine and get more complex, creating more faculties for the personality and creating more emotionally complex memories.

I have no idea what this example is saying, and it makes zero mention of people missing the point of the film.

Reposting from the previous three pages so it doesn't get lost:

From Kai's section in Characters.Mobile Suit Gundam:

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Arguably with Defrosting Ice Queen Sayla. Their first encounter involved a Bitch Slap, she rolled her eyes at him for most of the show... it's also worth noting that Sayla fully fits the description of the ideal girlfriend Kai's describing at one point... and eventually he offhandedly and casually says he loves her. It’s not shown if she reciprocated, but as the show goes on she at least softened up with him, and Kai's the one who catches her after she escapes A Baoa Qu, when she's naturally quite happy to see him.

Since Administrivia.Examples Are Not Arguable, what should we do about this entry?

[up] The only thing that makes that sound arguable is the first sentence. The example itself seems to hold up. Maybe cut first sentence and rewrite the start of the second to something like:

"Kai's first encounter with Defrosting Ice Queen Sayla involved a Bitch Slap, she rolled her eyes at him for most of the show..."

  • Creator Killer: Despite the film becoming a box office smash hit, getting universal acclaim and got nominated for a Oscars, including Best Picture, its director Lisa Cholodenko didn't a another movie after this film and hasn't directed a film ever since 2010.

Isn't this when the film causes a creators career to die because this doesn't seem to be that?

From Human-Focused Adaptation

  • Fate Series:
    • Inverted. It's also a (mostly) human/humanoid take. Whereas the first few installments had a greater emphasis on the human Masters (the Fate/stay night saga, Lord El-Melloi II Case Files), many of the spin-offs will put focus on the Servants instead, with the Master either playing Supporting Protagonist or backup. Fate/Grand Order even plays around with this by taking alternate versions of previous Masters and turning them into Servants, either by posession or due to the feats they accomplished in their own timeline.
    • Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA is one of the few straighter instances of the trope, as the focus is on Magical Girl Warriors that primarily use Servants as powerups.
    • Capsule Servant is also primarily about the antics of the human Masters, as the Servants are reimagined into more traditional Mons in this universe.
    • The Servant Universe is a parody of the franchise's usual inversion, as it takes place in a timeline where only Servants exist. There used to be regular humans around, but that was generations before everyone figured out how to put Saint Graphs in their body.

These don't seem right to me. I mean, the majority of servants are human,, spirits sure but that doesn't seem like what this trope is meant to be for.

On Spider Man Spider Verse Miles Morales

  • Insistent Terminology: Every time [Miles'] powers accidentally activate at the beginning, he tries to convince himself that it's just puberty.

The trope seems to require a character correct others when they use the "wrong" term, but this example doesn't mention that aspect.

[up] That'd be Refusal of the Call since he's in denial that the "call" even exists.
[up][up] + [up][up][up] Both of these tropes rely on continuation of a story's mythos being shoved aside for whatever reason, so yeah they aren't examples. For Fate Series I think the idea of servants outnumbering Mons through a force of training or just transformation would belong to Faeries Don't Believe in Humans, Either since it either seems like humans are in supplementary material or more clearly just aren't discussed in the Servant Universe.

I'm currently in the process of brushing up Intouchables, and it has right now the following:

Aside being bare-bones, even if it's expanded with proper explanation - Driss is having serious family issues and Philippe, his cripple-employer-turned-best-friend, decides Driss is more needed at home than as his personal, live-in caretaker - the situation in the movie just doesn't seem to fit the trope. They don't have any sort of fight, their friendship is at its peak and even the reason why Driss is dismissed as the caretaker is due to the fact that both men have deep respect to each other and their personal lives.

As far as I understand, this completely disqualifies the use of the trope. Even if they do part their ways, it's precisely because their enduring friendship and the only reason why it is even listed is simply because they do part for a time being - at least until Driss can sort out problems of his nephews. So should it be expanded to cover the whole situation, or simply cut due to not being an example?
