Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Well, if I have to choose, I'd go with Adaptational Angst Upgrade, because of his father's death and all.

I am talking about the DC Animated Universe Superman, not the DC Extended Universe one. Thanks to his alternate counterparts, the DCAU Superman is even the incarnation that started the Evil Superman trend. Based on everything that I said about him in this post. does the Superman of the DCAU undergo Adaptational Personality Change, Adaptational Seriousness, or Adaptational Angst Upgrade?

The Mandalorian S3E7 "Chapter 23: The Spies" has this two examples:

  • We Gotta Stop Meeting Like This: Said almost verbatim by Moff Gideon upon seeing Bo-Katan behind the blast door after he captures Din.
  • We Meet Again: At the end of the episode, Moff Gideon comments on the recurring-ness of his confrontations with the Mandalorians.
Moff Gideon: Bo-Katan... We have to stop meeting like this.

My problem is that I think the tropes are not compatible; in this case it's either one or the other. We Gotta Stop Meeting Like This seems to be more about acquaintances/allies, so despite being closer to the actual words said, I'm wondering if We Meet Again doesn't fit better, since they are indubitably enemies.

I found this on YMMV.Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3:

  • Just Herefor Godzilla: Not rather in case of what's in the movie but in bigger picture with whole Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some have already decided that after 3rd Guardians movie they won't watch any other MCU projects from then.

I feel like this is misuse because it doesn't mention anyone watching the film for a specific character but I wanted to get some more opinions. If it does count wouldn't it belong on YMMV.Marvel Cinematic Universe instead

What counts as a "sequel" for Surprisingly Improved Sequel? Because this example was just added to American Dad!:

American Dad isn't a sequel to Family Guy, it's a completely different show by the same creator. Though the two works sometimes make references to one another, the cast and settings have nothing in common.

From Erma

  • Weirdness Censor: In Part 5 of The Family Reunion, when Erma and Mitsu and Momo started fighting, many people were completely unfazed of the supernatural stuff happening during their fight, especially when Yori is strecting her neck infront of everybody. Except for one guy with glasses who is the only one not unfazed.

Im having a hard time judging this one, mostly because im not sure if im understanding Weirdness Censor correctly, but I don't think it's an example

For the entire time they're at the airport all the visible bystanders are staring directly at the main cast. Even before mitsu and momo show up and fight erma just her family walking around is turning heads. They may not have terribly strong reactions but they definitely seem to notice all the yokai walking around. When meeting sam yori notes that foreigners usually freak out more than the locals so it seems familiarity has something to do with it.

From YMMV.Hi Fi Rush:

  • Americans Hate Tingle: Actually, Americans like Chai. It's Japanese players who don't. While Chai suits the Shōnen hero archetype at first glance, his outward disrespect towards his opponents is seen as problematic in Japanese media, where even the most despicable villains are typically given some form of respect or understanding by the hero.

Now this is a bit of a complicated case, as while Hi-Fi Rush was directed by John Johanas and published by Bethesda (which is an American studio), the game was developed by Tango Gameworks, which is a studio located in Tokyo Japan, which leads me to question. Does this qualify or not?

Neither Miles or Scorpion were in position to know if it was Cletus or Norman.
I disagree with this. In Absolute Carnage #2 Miles hit Norman!Carnage in the face with a Venom Touch-infused punch after he stabbed Gargan — exposing his head — and Eddie addressed Norman by name in #3 while protecting Gargan from him; and after Miles was infected by a symbiote Norman!Carnage took him to meet Cletus — with one of the stories in Carnage Reigns confirming that at the very least Miles knew that there were two different Carnages active at that time, and that Cletus' appearance was very different from Norman's.

[up] Based on that additional info, it's sounding like a continuity snarl unless they cover that later in the series. I'm wary of saying it's definitely a miss while the story's still ongoing, but we can say it seems inconsistent if we provide that context in the example.

[up]6 That's not a sequel, so I'd call it misuse.

[up]5 If they notice but aren't fazed because yokai are not new to them, it's not Weirdness Censor.

[up]4 Sounds like it's trying for an inversion, which doesn't make sense for Americans Hate Tingle. Is this thought as a Japanese game? Are there a lot of Japanese players?

[up]3 I wonder if the entry might not work either way. I think of him as a creator of an eclectic mix of stuff. The ones that won Oscars were the poignant films, but maybe that's just the Academy.

I think "one entry in their work is so different from the others" better fits He Also Did or Creator's Oddball, but (1) I agree that even Jonze's 'serious' films are a little out there and (2) his filmography is practically half Jackass stuff.

If an actor dislikes what was done their character in a sequel they didn’t participate in, would that count as Creator Backlash or Disowned Adaptation? I’m asking this in light of something said on Twitter recently about ‘’Xenoblade Chronicles 3’’. Here’s how the entry would go

But which trope does this fit under?

Does the example below fit Handicapped Badass?

  • In Harry Potter and the Ice Princess, when talking with Ron and her Ravenclaw dorm-mates about how he uses an old wand, Elsa observes that Ron must be more powerful than he knows if he’s able to get the results he gets in class while using a wand that didn’t choose him.

[up]Handicapped Badass is using 'handicapped' as a synonym of 'disabled', not 'fighting with a handicap'. So no.

[up][up]Neither. She didn't create the work and a sequel is not an adaptation.

[up] in that case should these entries from the Creator Backlash entry for Alien³ be removed?

  • James Cameron criticized the sequel harshly, specifically citing what became of Bishop, Hicks, and Newt, though in recent years he has said that aside from that he thinks the movie is fine.
  • Michael Biehn was reportedly so annoyed about his character's fate that he only allowed the use of his likeness in exchange for a hefty paycheck (so hefty, in fact, that it was more than his entire fee for Aliens). Biehn later regretted his angry decision to deny them any chance to use his likeness - in hindsight saying it would have been a great chance to work with Fincher. He joked that "I was very stupid when I was younger" when, upon hearing that there was a dummy mockup of him with his chest exploded like he'd been host to alien, he replied "I don't care how much money you give me, that alien is not coming out of me." More seriously, he says that if he had known David Fincher would end up being David Fincher, he wouldn't have fought as hard to be paid for his photograph, instead currying favor with a brilliant director in hopes of future work.

YMMV.Redfall

  • Hype Backlash: The game was hit hard by this after release. With Arkane Studios, creator of the well liked Dishonored series, Prey (2017), and Deathloop behind the development of Redfall, many fans had high expectations. However, what they ultimately got was at worst a clearly rushed and incomplete game riddled with bugs and borderline non functional AI, or at best a So Okay, It's Average by the books open world shooter that doesn't do anything to set itself apart from its competition. What really hit the nail in the coffin was that the game was sold at a AAA price of $70 USD when many reviewers agreed its overall quality was more akin to an indie game worth less than half of that.

Hype Backlash isn't about backlash for overly praised work?

[up] Yes, it's necessary for the work to first be received with praise and then suddenly be hated to count for Hype Backlash. Redfall failed pretty much from the start, so I say they don't count.

Reposting from page 1092 so it doesn't get lost:

From Kira's section in Characters.Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Heliopolis:

  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Of Amuro Ray, the original Gundam pilot. They're both technical geniuses, emotional characters, and protagonists, but where Amuro only had one real friend initially, Kira has several who are very important to him. Amuro infamously fought with his CO and deserted; Kira was nothing but supportive of Murrue and the AA and vice-versa. A distraught Amuro spent the series deciding against a Relationship Upgrade with his good friend Frau; a distraught Kira made the decision to sleep with his crush Flay very early on. Amuro also fully awakens into a powerful Newtype by the end of his series; Kira only starts to awaken into the Cosmic Era equivalent at the end of his, principally because of the downplayed nature of Newtypes in the Cosmic Era. The vast difference in temperaments and reactions between them outweigh the few glancing similarities.

Does this example fit?

On Trivia. The Legend Of Zelda Links Awakening

  • Ascended Fanon: The entire game was this, in a sense. Rather than start as an official Zelda title, Link's Awakening was more of a personal project for fun's sake during the dev team's off-time, one that was fortunately received with interest and praise upon being revealed to Nintendo's higher-ups. A happy accident in hindsight, as the remodeled For the Frog the Bell Tolls engine and most of its assets would make development of the Oracle series games a much easier task.

Does this really count? Even if it started off as a fun personal project rather than an "official" title, the fact that it was made by the devs in-house means this is probably misuse, since Ascended Fanon is meant to be unofficial fan ideas becoming canon.

From Columbo S 03 E 04

  • Idiot Ball:
    • Keppel just had to hold on to that calibration converter. Couldn't have, say, thrown it into a random garbage can somewhere.

So Keppel uses a 45 from a display case in his office and a 22 caliber converter to kill the victim, then returns the gun to its case and hides the converter inside a lamp. Once the murder is discovered the police search the entire building including his office and run ballistics on all his guns. Of course they turn up nothing, the gun barrels are clean not to mention the wrong caliber and they don't find the converter.

Now lets look at this from keppels perspective, the most damning piece of evidence is cleverly hidden inside a room the police have already thoroughly checked, why would he risk moving it? Especially with that nosy detective columbo hounding him everywhere he goes.

Later in the episode it's shown that he was right to be confident in his hiding spot. columbo is certain the murder weapon is still in the building but has no idea where it could be and doesn't even consider a converter, he only finds it by manipulating keppel into revealing its location.

I guess the argument could be made that disposing of it would have been safer, but I don't think keeping it was stupid.
