False Reassurances in Fan Works.

Crossovers
  • In The Bridge (MLP), Godzilla Junior has to assure his crying student, Chibi Moon, that he can handle Grand King Ghidorah alone no problem and needs her to get the others to safety; knowing full well Ghidorah is too strong for him to fight on his own. He's just trying to spare her the possibility of seeing him getting killed and try to help.
  • Evil And Ham: Arachne tells Sophia's PRT handler that if she copies all of the Ward files for her, she'll be given everything she's earned and a safe place. After the exchange takes place, she's given a stack of false bills, then drugged and framed for possession, ensuring that she'll wake up in jail.
  • In The Games We Play, when they reunite after a long time, Blake asks Jaune if he's still working for the White Fang. He tells her no... because he's Bavarian Fire Drilled his way into becoming the de facto leader.
"I don't work for the White Fang anymore, if that's what you're asking," I said, which was true. Nowadays, it was more like they were working for me.
  • In The Night Unfurls, Vault gives one to his former comrade Maia after declaring his intention of a Sex Empire. He tells her, "Don't worry, you'll enjoy it. You won't have to worry about starving or any more wars."

Code Geass

  • In Code Geass: The Prepared Rebellion, Lelouch does this to Clovis twice in a row. First, he says he believes his big brother when he says he's innocent in his mother's death... but he's still guilty of serious war crimes. Then he says that he won't kill him... because C.C., being the wronged party, is the one who deserves to deal justice.

Death Note

Dragon Ball

  • Dragon Ball Z Abridged:
    • The movie TFS Movie: Lord Slug Abridged, has Popo telling Kami that he doesn't torture cats. Given what Mr. Popo is in the DBZ Abridged setting, that isn't much reassurance for anything else.
    • In the series proper, finding himself outmatched against Freeza, Vegeta asks Krillin to "almost kill him" (since Saiyans become stronger every time they're beaten to near-death). Krillin is confused as hell and asks if there are "no repercussions for that". Vegeta replies that he "will not punch [him]". Krillin notes that as "oddly specific".

Genshin Impact

  • Descensus Averno: Lumine reassures Mavey that she won't kill the Liyue spy. And she doesn't. Instead, she tortures them by removing all their fingernails in order to get the information she desires.

Good Omens

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi

  • A Game for the Fool: Wei Wuxian insists that the mass-produced talismans aren't illegal. Technically speaking, they aren't... mostly because the cultivation sects don't know where the cheap talismans that are breaking their monopoly are coming from.

Harry Potter

  • In the Harry Takes No Crap series, Professor McGonagall refuses to listen to Harry's Cassandra Truths, which results in him getting seriously hurt. After she's reamed out for her willful ignorance, she asks Harry for his forgiveness, claiming that he can come to her with anything. Harry replies that she won't have to worry about him coming to her unforgiven... as she'll be the last person he approaches for help, if he bothers with her at all.

Invader Zim

  • Invader Zim: A Bad Thing Never Ends: When about to shoot a nervous Bob out of a cannon at the Membranes' house to try and get past their security system, Zim addresses his concerns about the safety of this plan by saying that Zim isn't in any danger from it. Bob, understandably, protests that that's not what he meant.
  • Ruby Pair:
    • When Tenn expresses disbelief that GIR will be able to get her and Zim out of a Cyberflox jail cell in "Meeting of Ruby Eyes", Zim scoffs that GIR is "perfectly reliable at least 75 percent of the time". Naturally, this does nothing to make Tenn feel better.
    • In "Beefus Megabombus", when Tak's Ship is hooking itself into Skoodge's PAK, it tells him that the process will "only hurt a lot". He barely has a chance to question this statement before he's screaming in pain.

Kim Possible

  • In Buried, Drakken assures Kim's kidnapper, who had locked her in a coffin and buried her alive, that if he tells him Kim's location, he'll never have to work again. Once he hands over the information, Drakken and Shego promptly kill him.

The LEGO Movie

  • A Piece of Rebellion: President Business has Ma and Pa Cop guest-star on one of Emmet's broadcasts so that Good Cop/Bad Cop will realize he has them as unwitting hostages. He personally reassures the pair that he's certain GCBC will make it back home in time for Taco Tuesday.

Miraculous Ladybug

  • BURN THE WITCH:
    • Chat Noir reassures Lila that they're "taking you where you need to be". Naturally, it turns out that they've fallen under the sway of Witch Hunter's More than Mind Control, and are taking her right to where the akuma and mob are setting up a funeral pyre.
    • Witch Hunter cheerfully informs Lila that the smoke inhalation will kill her long before the flames do. Oh, she'll still feel the pain of being burned first, but won't suffer through the whole thing.
  • The Karma of Lies:
    • After Adrien helps her out, Lila sincerely thanks him, declaring that "I feel like you've given me a second chance." He thinks that she's referring to how he 'took the high road' with her, unaware that she's actually setting him up as her Unwitting Pawn, as well as how he entered the passwords to the Agreste emergency fund account right in front of her, giving her a chance to screw him over even harder than she originally intended.
    • When Lila transfers a large sum of stolen money into eurobonds, the teller cautions that she needs to be careful with handling them. Lila replies "I'll be sure to watch out for thieves."
    • Audrey tells Adrien that "As long as you're in my care, I will treat you as if you were my own child." Being well aware of how she neglects Chloe, Adrien can only shudder in response.
  • Tales of Karmic Lies Aftermath: Used multiple times in the in-universe film Ladybug: Miraculous Journey:
    • Chat Noir sees a couple in danger of falling off a rooftop during an akuma attack. Instead of doing anything to help them, he reassures them that they'll be fine — even if they fall to their deaths, Ladybug's Miraculous Cure will bring them back. Sure, they'll still be traumatized, but he doesn't give a damn about that.
    • Ms. Bustier's fictional counterpart is a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who lies to her bullied students, offering them empty words of encouragement and claiming things are well in hand when she has no intention of punishing their tormentors. Especially not Emily, whose rich parents she wants to keep happy with her.

My Hero Academia

  • Death Daggers: Endeavor demands to know where his youngest son was while he was busy fighting. Shouto replies that he was 'following in his footsteps'. Endeavor takes this to mean that his son was being heroic; in reality, while Shouto was helping out others, he's actually referring to the fact that he now has blood on his hands.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • In Changeling, Twilight discovers that almost every pony is a changeling (to the point that Earth Ponies and Pegasi have actually been extinct for centuries, and there are only five unicorns left, and the only adult ones are Celestia and Luna). Except Pinkie Pie. She's at least fifteen different changelings.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

  • The Child of Love: In the omake of chapter 7, the author thinks Asuka is going to hit him. However, Asuka reassures him that she will not slap him. Axel calms down... and Asuka proceeds to kick his groin.

One Piece

  • 'Til You Feel It All Around You: After being de-aged by a mysterious force, young Zoro demands to know if he's managed to become the best swordsman yet. Sanji tells him that "You haven't lost since the day I met you," tastefully omitting any mention of his encounter with Mihawk on that day. He also silently notes that he's not counting any losses to opponents who weren't swordsmen.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

  • Subsumption: Kyubey claims that, while an intelligent witch "would be rather fascinating to behold", "in all likelihood", none exist. The series follows one such sapient witch.

Superman

Supernatural

  • In Under the Big Top, after Sam confronts Castiel about how his breakup with Dean is affecting the rest of the troupe, Castiel assures him that "After tonight, everything will be better." Castiel plans on committing suicide that night.

Touhou Project

  • This is played for tragedy twice in the Gensokyo 20XX series. The first time, in 20XXIV, with Sakuya and Yuuka, as the latter decides it would be better to let the former die thinking that nonexistent emergency services were coming. The second time, in 20XXV, apparently, as it was mentioned that Ren told Reimu things would be alright and that he wouldn't die, which occurred before he passed away.

Worm

  • Mauling Snarks: When Jacob confronts the Council of Teeth after they sent the Butcher to kill Taylor, the Council hastily assures him they had no idea that Taylor is his niece and they never would've targeted her if they knew. Jacob happily announces that in that case, he won't kill them in revenge for attacking his niece. No, instead he'll kill them because they sent a murderer after children.

X-Men

  • In X-Men: The Early Years, Beast assures the Professor that he, Angel and Iceman won't start anything with a pervert boy who previously harassed Jean. Xavier notes they didn't agree to stay away from that boy and gets worried.
Xavier: Have fun. No trouble, and stay away from Will Anderson. Is that understood?
    [...]
Hank: (matter-of-factly) You need not worry, sir. If there is any trouble. I can guarantee that one of us will not be the first to start it. You have my word.
Xavier: (narrowing his eyes) You know, if Scott were with you, how you phrased that would worry me.
