Defenders

Defenders are Pokémon whose role is to ensure nobody scores through the zones. They can easily take hits and lock down enemies with crowd control, although their damage is not to be underestimated.

    In General
  • Mighty Glacier: Most of the Defenders have high HP that can be built towards more offensive builds and more offensive crowd control skills.
  • Stone Wall: As most of the Defenders have high HP, they can be built more defensively with more recovery moves and more defensive crowd control skills.

    Snorlax (Kabigon)

Snorlax (カビゴン, Kabigon)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unite_snorlax_2.png
Snorlax is a bear-like Pokemon who likes to sleep and eat. Found obstructing roads in the Kanto region by sleeping, this Pokémon is tough enough to block the important objectives and score goals with his body as well as powerful enough to defeat enemies, even if his health is lower.

  • Advancing Wall of Doom: A well-placed Block can effectively turn Snorlax into one of these, cutting off enemies from their goals and pushing them directly into the path of your allies to be overwhelmed.
  • Barrier Warrior: Block is a move that can prevent opponent Pokémon from passing through a very large barrier that Snorlax generates.
  • Big Eater: Snorlax has the Glutton Ability, which doubles the effects of Berry items on the field upon consumption.
  • Forced Sleep: Yawn is an AOE Hindrance move that forces the opponent under the AOE to Sleep.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: Tackle is a Dash move where Snorlax throws his body forward to stun and damage anyone within the line of range. Upgrading this move will give Snorlax either Heavy Slam or Flail.
    • Heavy Slam is an AOE move where Snorlax can stun its opponent by jumping then slamming himself on the floor.
  • Limit Break: Its Unite Move allows it to slam its body on the floor, healing itself as well as stunning surrounding opponents within the set radius. After a set amount of time, it can use the Unite Move again to generate another shockwave by literally turning on the floor.
  • Non-Elemental: Snorlax, being a Normal-type Pokémon, has access to 6 Normal-type moves..
  • Starter Mon: Snorlax is the Defender option for the player's first Unite License.
  • Stone Wall: Snorlax is not only bulky, it also has a lot of moves that prevents opponents from passing through Snorlax, making it a threatening presence in areas with tight chokepoints.

    Crustle (Iwapalace)

Crustle (イワパレス, Iwapalace)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unite_crustle.png
Crustle is a Bug/Rock Pokémon from the Unova region.

  • Barrier Warrior: Rock Tomb deals lined AOE damage in front of Crustle, then makes a barrier at the end of the line.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: As expected from a Bug-type, Crustle can learn X-Scissor, a melee Bug-type Pokémon where Crustle shoves its target away three times with three slashing motions. Said opponent is stunned during the duration of the move.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Rock Tomb is rather tricky to aim, as you have to account for its travel time, and a wrongly placed barrier will cut off your teammates' movements instead. Properly aimed, though, it is the only hindrance that can stop Pokémon under Unstoppable effects, or cut off escape routes for certain kills.
  • Dishing Out Dirt:
    • Rock Slide is an AOE move that stuns the opponent underneath the Area. This will be replaced by either Shell Smash or Rock Tomb, a linear AOE move that makes a rocky barrier at the end of the area.
    • Stealth Rock, only available to replace Fury Cutter, is an AOE move that deals a slowly increasing damage over time to the opponent under the specified area.
  • Shed Armor, Gain Speed: Crustle can use Shell Smash to increase its own Attack and Sp. Atk at the cost of its Def and Sp. Def, therefore temporarily turning Crustle from a Stone Wall to a Mighty Glacier — not falling into Fragile Speedster unlike the usual examples since removing the armor does not decrease his still high Hit Points.
  • Stone Wall: In addition to having high HP, Crustle is built to withstand damage with its Passive skill, which decreases damage as its HP lowers. Its damage output, however, is rather lackluster compared to its fellow Defenders.

    Slowbro (Yadoran)

Slowbro (ヤドラン, Yadoran)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unite_slowbro_0.png
Originally hailing from the Kanto region, Slowbro is a Water/Psychic Pokémon that is well known for its slow uptake on situations. Despite having a ranged attack, it is surprisingly bulky and can survive in fights not by tanking but through crowd controls.

  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Slowbeam is one of the very few hindrance effects in the game that works on Unstoppable opponents, making Slowbro a very powerful disabler.
  • Delayed Reaction: Slowbro has a passive skill Oblivious, which turns every instance of damage into damage over time, making him die later than normal.
  • Making a Splash: Slowbro, being part Water-Type, has access to three Water-type Moves:
    • Water Gun is a move where Slowpoke shoots water. As soon as Slowpoke evolves to Slowbro, it will have access to:
      • Surf, a Water move that creates three pulses of water which Slowbro rides. This can also push the opponent away.
      • Scald, a Water type move that mechanically works similarly to Water Gun, but also Burns the opponents as well as slowing them.
  • Mutual Disadvantage: With Telekinesis and Slowbeam, Slowbro essentially has two long-duration stuns, which leaves them helpless against your team's damage-dealers; to counteract this, Slowbro is also immobilized while using them, meaning it needs team support to actually take down the opponent, and it can't easily use them to escape.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: In the original game, Oblivious is an Ability where the user cannot be affected by Infatuation, Taunts, and Intimidate. While this skill might have been mildly useful against a Wigglytuff if it was applied like that in this game, the current interpretation of this skill makes Slowbro more tanky and more usable in general situations.
  • Psychic Powers: Slowpoke has two Psychic powers in its set, one of which will replace its Slack Off move.
    • Telekinesis is a Hindrance move that allows Slowpoke to use its psychic power to make its opponent float. If it uses it again, the affected Pokémon may be dragged to Slowpoke.
    • Amnesia is a Recovery move that nullifies damage before making Slowpoke immune to Hindrances as well.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: One of the first-gen Defenders that is sold for cheap at 6,000 coins, with simple and easy to use skills for newbies. He nevertheless remains relevant even to the higher leagues since he comes packed with disables and is a beast to take down.
  • Support Party Member: Even for a Defender, Slowbro's damage output is horrible, with a weak basic attack and only one move capable of doing anywhere near noticeable damage, and it's as slow as its name implies. On the other hand, it also has access to an absurd amount of crowd control, as basically everything it does will hinder the opponent in some way.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Telekinesis effectively immobilizes an enemy, or pulls them towards the user.
    • Limit Break: Its Unite Move, Slowbeam, takes this further by putting up a protective shield to ensure Slowbro doesn't go down easily while holding its target down.

    Blastoise (Kamex)

Blastoise (カメックス, Kamex)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unite_blastoise_8.png

One of the starters of the Kanto Region, Blastoise is a bipedal Water-type Pokémon that resembles a turtle.

  • Barrier Warrior: Blastoise has two skills that give him extra shield, making him viable in wearing Score Shield.
    • Surf+ gives him a bonus shield when the initial wave hits any Pokémon.
    • Its Unite Move, Hydro Typhoon, gives him a shield as well.
  • Cooldown Manipulation: Blastoise's Boosted Attack lowers the cooldown of all of its moves, encouraging him to spam its basic attacks while all of its Moves are in cooldown.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Using Rapid Spin turns all of its moves from from ranged attacks to melee attacks. Even if it counts as melee, Rapid Spin and its other attacks draw power from its Special Attack stats, qualifying him for this status.
  • Making a Splash: Blastoise, being a Water-type, has access to four different Water-type moves.
    • Water Gun is a Water-type move where Squirtle shoots water from its mouth. This move can be replaced by Hydro Pump or Water Spout.
      • Hydro Pump is a Water-type move that spews heavy volume of water to push its opponent up to the end of the attack, stunning the opponent who is pushed back the farthest as well.
      • Water Spout is a Water-type Hindrance move where Blastoise can slow down the opponent who is underneath the designated Area of Effect.
      • Surf is a Dash move where Blastoise makes a wave from its initial position to a certain radius, pushing everyone away to beyond that radius while damaging everyone within said radius. Only Blastoise has a Surf where it can move anywhere at the end of the move, making him able to act out while the enemy is still being hit by Surf.
    • Use Your Head: One of Squirtle's initial moves is Skull Bash, a Dash move where Squirtle quickly moves to one place, attacking anyone within the line using its head. This skill can be replaced by Rapid Spin or Surf.
      • Spin Attack: Rapid Spin is a Buff move that makes Blastoise continuously spin around in place to continuously damage anyone within its vicinity, making himself invulnerable to any Hindrances. While underneath the Rapid Spin, it is able to use Hydro Pump and Water Spout as well. See Stance System below for more details.
    • Limit Break: Blastoise's Unite Move, Hydro Typhoon, is a powerful Unite Move that deals damage within Blastoise's vicinity.
  • Shell Backpack: Befitting a turtle and justified by the holowear concept, but notably zig-zagged, being in full effect for, eg, the fashionable outfit but averted for the firefighter one.
  • Stance System: Blastoise's Rapid Spin momentarily changes how Blastoise plays. Upon using the skill, Blastoise is now not only Invulnerable to any Hindrance for 8 seconds, it is continuously attacking anyone within its melee range. This attack can extend its reach just by spamming the Basic Attack button. Furthermore, under Rapid Spin, its other two moves changes its properties as well:
    • Water Spout, instead of being a AOE that targets a certain Circular area, is now a channeling move that continuously attacks anyone surrounding Blastoise under Rapid Spin. However, to use this move properly, one must hold the R Button continuously.
    • Hydro Pump, instead of being a Line move, is now an AOE that pushes anyone away from Blastoise. Unlike Water Spout, this is not a channeling move.

    Mamoswine (Mammoo)

Mamoswine (マンムー, Mammoo)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unite_mamoswine.png
Mamoswine is a Ground/Ice-type Pokémon that was formerly thought to be extinct, as its population dwindled in number after the Ice Age.

  • An Ice Person: Being a partially Ice-type Pokémon, Mamoswine's boosted attack allows him to freeze an opponent. It also has access to three Ice-type moves:
    • Ice Shard is an Area move where Swinub throws three ice shards. This move will eventually be replaced by one of the two other Ice-type moves listed below:
      • Icicle Crash is an Area move where Mamoswine produces a bunch of small falling icicles on the area before producing a larger one. The larger icicle can be destroyed by using Tackle or High Horsepower, which freezes anyone in the vicinity as well as granting a small area that increases move speed.
      • Ice Fang is a move where Mamoswine hooks the target
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: Swinub has access to Tackle, a Line move that pushes Swinub from one point to another, damaging anyone within the area. By Lv 8, this move will be replaced by one of two Ground-type moves listed below:
    • Dishing Out Dirt: Being partially Ground-type, Mamoswine has access to two Ground-type moves
      • High Horsepower is a Line move where Mamoswine charges in one linear direction before stomping at the end of the line.
      • Earthquake is an Area move where Mamoswine jumps in a specified area, and anyone within Mamoswine's landing area will be pulled towards Mamoswine when the move hits.
      • Limit Break: His Unite Move, Mammoth Mash, has Mamoswine repeatedly stomp an area, making him immune to Hindrances as well as slowing down the opponent. The final stomp throws his opponents up, therefore stunning them.
  • Kevlard: Has access to the Thick Fat ability, which has more passive mechanics than usual:
    • Every time he attacks, his Defense and Special Defense increases.
    • When using any Ice-type moves, his next attack becomes a boosted attack.
    • If any of his Ice-type moves freezes any opponents on the goal, they will score more slowly than usual.

    Greedent (Yokubarisu)

Greedent (ヨクバリス, Yokubarisu)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unite_greedent.png
Greedent is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Gen 8. Known for its love of berries, he will use his skills to stockpile Berries as ammunition for his skills.

  • Combat Medic: Greedant is supposed to use his berries to stockpile for moves. Nothing is stopping other player mons from picking them up, friend or foe. At the same time nothing is stopping Greedent from using Stuff Cheeks to drop a chunk of healing on an ally instead of for himself. If they aren't careful, however, they won't be able to manage stockpile benefits/self heals and team healing properly.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Greedent has been marked as Expert for the necessary micromanagement of his berry resources. Most of the moves are mildly usable by themselves, but where Greedent shines is how his moves come out sooner than expected, making him able to dish out more damage than what's expected from a Defender.
  • Edible Ammunition: Has access to two moves that use his berry stacks.
    • Green Thumb: Bullet Seed is a Grass-type move where Greedent shoots a bunch of seeds on a linear AOE. As well as slowing down his opponents, this move will increase damage depending on how many berries Greedent has stacked.
    • Breath Weapon: Belch allows Greedent to deal damage in a cone-shaped area in front of him. This move will have less cooldown depending on how many berries Greedent has stacked.
  • Delicious Distraction: Covet is a move where Greedent chases berries summoned in front of him, granting him invulnerability as well as increasing his movement speed at each berries he consumes. In addition to both of these, Greedent may use either Bullet Seed or Belch while running.
    • Limit Break: His Unite Move summons different kinds of berries in a specific area where Greedent jumps to deals damage on said area.
  • Non-Elemental: Greedent is a purely Normal-type Pokémon with different attacks.
    • Grievous Harm with a Body: Tackle is a Dash move where Skwovet throws his body forward to stun and damage anyone within the line of range.
    • Status Buff: Defense Curl is a Buff that gives additional defense to Skwovet/Greedent.
  • Stomach of Holding: Cheek Pouch allows Greedent to not only heal from every berry, regardless of type, but also let Greedent store up to five berries on his tail. This is a double edged sword, however, as Greedent will drop said berry if he is hit.

    Trevenant (Ohrot)

Trevenant (オーロット, Ohrot)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unite_trevenant.png
Trevenant is a dual Grass/Ghost-type Pokémon originating from the Kalos region. In Pokémon Unite, Trevenant deals more damage when his HP is lower.

  • Cast from Hit Points: Almost all of Trevenant's moves will sacrifice a few of his HP.
  • Green Thumb: As partially Grass-type Pokémon, Trevenant has access to three Grass-type moves.
    • Branch Poke is a Grass-type move where Phanthump/Trevenant jabs in a designated direction, dealing damage as well as decreasing the enemy's movement speed. At Lv 7, this move can be replaced by Horn Leech or Pain Split.
    • Wood Hammer is a Grass-type move where Trevenant wields a hammer that hits a large area in front of him. If this hammer hits, he will have access to a follow up attack that slams a bigger hammer in front of him.
    • Life Drain: Horn Leech is a Grass-type move where Trevenant charges forward to deal damage, stun, shove, then throw the target as well as recover Trevenant's HP. After this, Trevenant's next three basic attacks will deal more damage as well as reduce this move's cooldown.
  • Healing Factor: Trevenant wields the 'Natural Cure' Ability where, after reaching 35% or less of his max HP, he will recover his health every 0.5 seconds for 4 seconds, with a cooldown of 100 seconds. In other words, he has a free Focus Band with reduceable cooldown.
  • Limit Break: Trevenant's Unite move, Phantom Forest, casts an AoE damage in a specified location and marking anyone who gets hit. Anyone marked receives bonus damage from Trevenant's allies. In addition, Trevenant receives a shield that grows the more enemies it hit and Trevenant will receive more HP recovery as long as he's still shielded.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: As a partially Ghost-type Pokémon, Trevenant has access to three Ghost-type moves.
    • Will-o-Wisp is a move where Phantump shoots two consecutive flames in one direction, dealing damage and burning enemies as well as reducing Atk and SpA. At Lv 5, Will-O-Wisp can be replaced by Wood Hammer or Curse:
    • Curse is a Ghost-type move where Trevenant sacrifices 4% of his HP to make an aura that deals damage over time as well as decreasing enemy movement speed, where the lower Trevenant's HP is, the slower the movement speed of his enemy will be. In addition, every time Trevenant receives or deals damage, Trevenant builds up a counter that can deal damage when released, resetting the cooldown of Branch Poke, Horn Leech, or Pain Split when said counter is at maximum.
    • Synchronization: Pain Split is a Ghost-type move where Trevenant links himself with an enemy for 6 seconds. During this link, some damage that Trevenant receives will transfer to the linked enemy. The less HP Trevenant has, the more damage will be transferred to his enemy. In addition, if Trevenant's HP is lower than his enemy's HP, Trevenant will continuously leech HP from his enemy.

     Goodra (Numelgon)

Goodra (ヌメルゴン, Numelgon)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f39290a3_0bf5_4064_899d_61b64a55834b.png
Goodra is a Dragon-type Pokémon originating from the Kalos region.
  • Breath Weapon: Goodra can learn Dragon Pulse which has him shooting a shockwave in the designated direction and if the center hits opponents, it deals more damage and restores Goodra's health with health also being restored if the opponent is affected by Gooey.
  • Horn Attack: Sligoo can learn Power Whip which has him lashing out at opposing Pokémon with his horns, damaging and slowing them. He can also pull distant opponents towards him.
  • Limit Break: Right as Rain which has Goodra summoning rain to fall around him and gradually restore his health and turns all of his basic attacks into boosted ones.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Bubble surrounds Goomy with a shield to protect him and if it ends or if he uses it again, the bubble shield pops and enemies take damage and are slowed.
  • Making a Splash: Goomy starts with Bubble and can upgrade it into Muddy Water when he evolves.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Dragon-type, but his only Dragon-type move is Dragon Pulse.
  • Ramming Always Works: Goomy starts with Tackle which has him charging at an opponent and throwing them and bouncing back if it does hit.
  • Status Effects: Goodra focuses on slowing down opponents via his ability Gooey or his moves such as Power Whip or Acid Spray.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Sligoo's Power Whip can pull distant opponents towards him.

     Lapras (Laplace)

Lapras (ラプラス, Laplace)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e8503b28_c3af_4d93_ab5d_bb0f88dda016.png

Lapras is a Water/Ice-type Pokémon originating from the Kanto region.

  • An Ice Person: Part Ice-type and can learn Ice Shard and Ice Beam, both of which freeze enemies and the former can shove frozen enemies and the latter can make enemies take damage over time and stop them from moving on frozen ground. Lapras can also move faster if he's on frozen ground.
  • Limit Break: Lapras Express which has Lapras summoning a wave and riding it forward and gives him higher speed but lowers it if he hits an obstacle. If Lapras hits a foe, he stops and damages and throws the foe and he can use the move again while riding the wave and shoot the wave forward. An ally can ride on Lapras's back and can dismount at any time.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Bubble Beam grants Lapras a shield when used.
  • Making a Splash: Part Water-type and can learn Whirlpool to deal damage over time, Water Pulse to slow down enemies and Bubble Beam to grant himself a shield and slow down enemies and envelope them in bubbles and slow them down.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Lapras Express allowing an ally to ride on Lapras's back is a reference to the Orange Islands season of Pokémon: The Series wherein Ash and his friends rode around on Ash's Lapras's back between islands.
    • Perish Song's ability to be used three times references how in the games, once Perish Song is used, the user and enemy faint within three turns.
  • Non-Elemental: Can learn Perish Song which KO's enemies if their health falls below a certain amount of their max HP.

     Umbreon (Blacky)

Umbreon (ブラッキー, Blacky)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0546.png

Umbreon is a Dark-type Pokémon originating from the Johto region.

  • Anti-Escape Mechanism: Can learn Mean Look which traps an enemy in a circular black zone and stops them from moving out of it. Not even Eject Button can bypass Mean Look's barrier, and it lasts a very long time compared to standard disabling effects (lasting 3 seconds in a game where 1-second or less stuns are the norm).
  • Casting a Shadow: Part Dark-type and can learn Fake Tears as an Eevee, Foul Play and Snarl.
  • Combat Medic: Umbreon can learn Wish wherein he makes a wish for an ally Pokémon and that ally receives reduced damage for a short time and then the Wish comes true, restoring their health.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Being a Dark-type, Umbreon relies on many tricky effects such as dealing increased damage to opponents with Foul Play based on their Atk. and using Snarl to lower their Atk, Sp. Atk. and Spd.
  • Immune to Flinching: As Eevee, his ability is Anticipation, which periodically makes him immune to a displacement effect or stun. As Umbreon, it upgrades to Inner Focus, which additionally makes him unstoppable for a short duration when it triggers.
  • Jack of All Stats: Umbreon's kit is extremely versatile, to the point that the only thing keeping him from effectively being an All-Rounder is not having enough damage output to be a main carry. Depending on the moves chosen, he can be played as a frontline tank with decent damage, a pure disabler focusing on singling out opponents, or even a bulky Supporter thanks to his ability to heal allies.
  • Limit Break: Moonlight Prance where Umbreon recovers health when not in combat and he leaps up, stealing opponent's shields for himself and then slams to the ground and damages enemies and leaves them unable to act and for a short time, can steal a portion of opponent's shields.
  • Non-Elemental: Can learn Swift as an Eevee and Mean Look.
  • Super-Scream: Can learn Snarl which lowers enemy's Atk, Sp. Atk and Spd. Once it ends, it stuns all enemies in the area of effect.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: His Eevee form's tail pattern indicates that Umbreon is male.
