The Children

    Shunsuke Takano
The protagonist of the game.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: Shunsuke wonders this when discovering Yuuichi's father's corpse. By that point, he has seen so many horrors that he is able to analyze the corpse rationally.
  • Driven to Suicide: In the Everybody Dies End, he kills himself out of despair at being the only survivor.
  • The Hero: He is the kid who serves as the leader of the group and seeks to save them from the twisted town.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Hiroto references this just before the final battle. He advises Shunsuke to be absolutely sure about his desire to try and help Yuuichi, as people with such emotional issues would be a full-time commitment.

    Sayaka Akatsuki
One of Shunsuke's best friends, a free-spirited tomboy. The original Kinder game reveals her surname is Akatsuki.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: While she was already a tomboy, her personality in Re: Kinder becomes more bizarre, saying random and inappropiate stuff for shits and giggles.
  • From the Mouths of Babes: She regularly says very unchildlike things. For example, at one point the player can listen to her and Ryou play a game of 'adultery between a boss and his secretary', with her blackmailing Ryou over some incriminating photos she took.
  • Sarcasm Mode: When asked if everything is okay:
"Oh, it’s fine. While you were gone, we had two heart attacks, a pregnancy, and an abortion, but other than that."

    Ryou Shimoya
One of Shunsuke's best friends, a shy and meek boy. The original Kinder game reveals his surname is Shimoya.
  • Ankle Drag: If the wrong action is chosen, he gets dragged into the dome and killed.
  • Dies Wide Open: If the player fails to notice that Ryou disappeared from the party in the dark room, the corpse will be seen hanging upside-down in a closet with blank, white eyes.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Ryou can end up getting ripped in half, and then into more pieces.

    Rei Nimura
A loud and outgoing 5th grader Shunsuke meets after Yuuichi destroys the town. The original Kinder game reveals her surname is Nimura.
  • Broken Pedestal: Yuuichi brings up an actress that Rei happens to look up to, then points to a porno on his father's shelf. It involves said actress getting inappropriate with dogs, leading to Rei thinking about that in shock.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Rei gets slapped by Shunsuke when she insists on Hiroto's death being all her fault.
  • Hysterical Woman: She screams and runs into Yuuichi's house if Aya isn't rescued in time, leading to her and Shunsuke finding nothing but a corpse. She will also insist on everything being her fault if Hiroto dies later on, until Shunsuke slaps her. Her unique ability is also Hysteria.
  • It's All My Fault: Rei will insist on Hiroto's death being her fault, should that child die.

    Aya Hibino
A gloomy 4th grader Shunsuke meets after the town is destroyed. The original Kinder game reveals her surname is Hibino.
  • Delayed Causality: This is how her death is played out. Shunsuke and Rei are relieved, and think they made it in time, only for the corpse's head to fall off.
  • Driven to Suicide: She mentions wanting to disappear at one point, and can succeed with a pistol.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Aya's defining trait.
  • False Reassurance: On the rooftop of the abandoned building, Aya asks Shunsuke to leave her alone. Shunsuke makes her promise to not jump off the roof. She agrees. After all, she's got a gun.
  • Off with His Head!: Aya's death, though it's not noticeable immediately.
  • The Quiet One: Aya's so quiet that she can slip away without anyone noticing.
  • Sneaky Departure: Aya pulls this twice because of a desire to disappear. Both times can end in death.

    Hiroto Yamakawa
A mature 6th grader Shunsuke meets after the town is destroyed. The original Kinder game reveals his surname is Yamakawa.
  • And I Must Scream: The False End has him turn out to have been conscious when skewered by a lightpost.
  • Badass Normal: Hiroto participates in all three Mistress battles and takes one down solo.
  • Cool Big Bro: He's the stronger of the kids and tries to act as a reliable older brother to them.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: If he fails to defeat the third Mistress, he will be skewered by a lightpost.
  • It's All My Fault: Hiroto thinks this when Rei runs off, wondering if he was too harsh.

    Takumi Katsuragi
A shy boy Shunsuke meets after the town is destroyed. The original Kinder game reveals his surname is Katsuragi.

    Yuuichi Mizuoka
A strange 2nd grader Shunsuke meets after the town is destroyed. It's quickly revealed he's the one responsible for it and traps the other kids in the Friends Game.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: In the original Kinder he was gloomy and moody, lashing out at others and believing he doesn't deserve forgiveness for his actions. In the remake he's more cheerful and theatrical, but it's revealed it's a facade and his personality is no different from the one in the original game.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He's a 2nd grader, making him the youngest of the kids.
  • Big Bad: He is the one behind the transformation of the town and the one running the Friends Game.
  • Catchphrase: In Re:Kinder he tends to appear while saying "Vamos cantar!", which is Portugueses for 'Let's sing'. In the Japanese version he says it in English instead.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: Re:Kinder turns the last phase of the final boss into this. Yuuichi only uses Campanella, which paralyzes every party member, except for Shunsuke because he's wearing the White Rose Ring. And winning merely requires the player to use the Red Rose Book.
  • Creepy Child: He murders people, including other children, without a second thought.
  • Dissonant Serenity: He is disturbingly cheerful, given all the horror he inflicts.
  • Driven to Suicide: He contemplates doing this so Shunsuke will leave him alone and partially out of guilt for everything he has done, and does so in the True End.
  • Enfant Terrible: He is a second grader who is responsible for killing the townspeople and turning it into a wasteland.
  • Freudian Excuse: Yuuichi watched his mother struggle with mood swings and suicidal depression, and getting no help from her abusive, unfaithful husband or incompetent doctors that insisted there's nothing wrong with her. And when Yuuichi reached his limit with tolerating this, and his mother was having another moment of contemplating on jumping off a building, he paralyzed and pushed her off.
  • Laughably Evil: He makes frequent jokes, Non Sequiturs, and references, and keeps a goofy attitude. He is also a Reality Warper who brutally kills adults and children alike.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Yuuichi was one for his mother, keeping her from going insane from the abuse his father leaped onto her, until things reached their limit and he killed her.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: He killed his mother by pushing her off a building when she was already suicidal, making it look like she jumped of her own free will.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Sometime after the third Mistress battle, Yuuichi begins to feel deep regret for all the killing he did.
  • One-Winged Angel: The image of his final boss form in the original game changes during his final phase, which includes growing wings. In the remake, he takes on this form from the beginning of the fight.
  • Reality Warper: He can control the town and make monsters appear to menace the characters.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He killed his father and his mother as revenge for the abuse he received.
  • Stepford Smiler: Underneath his jokey, non-stop smiling is a broken kid with an abusive childhood.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He kills Takumi no matter what, and he can also kill the other children depending on the actions the player takes.

Adults

    Mami

    Yuuichi's Mother
  • Driven to Suicide: Subverted. The Sea of Memories seems to show that Yuuichi's mother jumped off a building in front of him. In truth, he pushed her off.
  • Stepford Smiler

    Yuuichi's Father
  • Abusive Parents
  • Asshole Victim: Played with. Yuuichi's father gets portrayed as one for most of the game, but he acknowledges later on that his behavior was him lashing out. The player can also get a chance to read a message written by him, where he admits his problems, including that he's too weak of a person to help his son, and asks for help on a message board. The response he was given was less than helpful.

Bosses

    Princess Hanauta Mitsugi
The first of the three Mistresses.
  • Plant Person: She appears as a little girl surfacing from a big rose as her lower half.
  • Puzzle Boss: Beating her requires the use of the Block skill. Every so often, two turns after her heart beats, she will unleash a powerful attack that will serve as a Total Party Kill if not blocked.
  • Total Party Kill: One of her moves, Heart of the September Rain, will instantly kill your party if they aren’t blocking it.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: She basically serves to show that the bosses will require more puzzle-based thinking than most RPGs. If you simply try wailing on her, you will die.

    Princess Hitokata Sakuragi
The second of the three Mistresses.
  • Creepy Doll: She takes on the appearance of a small, blonde doll with soulless eyes.
  • Puzzle Boss: To defeat her, you need to pick up the Diamond Bell in the Hag Shop before entering the battle with her and use it, otherwise she will keep healing herself.
  • Total Party Kill: Her Lamentations of a Mermaid attack will wipe out the whole party.

    Princess Utsuroi Momogi
  • Eye Scream: To beat her, Hiroto must choose to Aim For The Eyes, to temporarily blind the boss and allow the player a chance to grab items to properly defeat it.
  • One-Hit KO: Her Four of the Narcisscus Month attack will insta-kill Hiroto if he has the bottle.

    Nightingale

    Creepy Teddy
  • Killer Teddy Bear: It tries to kill Sayaka near the beginning of the game, and can succeed if the player messes up.

    Rapunzel
  • Foul Flower: It is a tiny little flower that tries to pull in Ryou and must be beaten to save him.

    Obake Asphalt/Tyltylmytyl
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: You can’t actually hurt it- you need to run away from it and find Aya.
  • Invincible Minor Minion: Tyltylmytyl replaces Obake Asphalt, who is the sole random encounter enemy. It only appears during one segment of the game, when the player has a short time-limit to find Aya before Yuuichi kills her, and cannot be harmed. It's the only battle in the game that the player can actually run away from.
  • Random Encounters: Unique in that it is the only enemy to be randomly encountered, and only during a single, specific section.
