The New Squidbeak Splatoon

    X (Agent X)
Awakened from a 12,000 year stasis, he is Dr. Light's final creation. Is given the honorary designation of "Agent X" by Cap'n Cuttlefish after the Kamabo Corp. incident.

Tropes:

    Artemis Delos (Agent 5)
Orion's older sister and a headstrong, hotheaded girl who mains Dualies.

Tropes:

  • Genki Girl: Is a cheerful social butterfly.
  • Genius Ditz: Actually has better grades than Karlene and Hinata, but only because they do study sessions. Iris finds out that Artemis has issues with her attention span, which is holding her back.
  • Has a Type: Cute Octoling girls.
  • Height Angst: She's a foot shorter than her Inkling peers and has been poked fun at for it, though Iris thinks it makes her more adorable.

    Orion Delos (Agent 6)
Artemis' younger brother, quieter and more reserved, but also smart and a skilled Charger sharpshooter. After becoming part of Leviathan, he finds that he feels like he's missing something in terms of his gender identity.

Tropes:

  • Berserk Button: Hurting her sister. The Cohozuna finds this out the hard way, though this also works against him when Hyper Storm H captures her, allowing Ballade to ambush him from behind.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: At the end of "The Pleasant Phantom Thief" he undergoes physical therapy that alters his body to be basically female in every way aside from his sexual organs.
  • Instant Expert: Downplayed - due to his smarts, he's able to quickly get a grasp of how to perform the Hadouken, though his first attempts are functionally similar to Dan Hibiki's Gadouken. It's still enough to allow him to stun Hyper Storm H briefly.
  • Intersex Tribulations: Discovers after fusing into Leviathan that he identifies as, at the very least, non-binary, preferring a more feminine body and appearance while still using male pronouns. Unfortunately, this gets him sexually assaulted by two bullies, resulting in some trauma, but he still manages to gather the courage to continue pursuing his experimentation with help from his friends, resulting in him fusing with Artemis and discovering that his gender dysphoria is caused by his lack of female genitalia (rather than having male genitalia instead, as he finds he's most comfortable with both), causing him to identify as intersex.

    Marie (Agent 2)
One of the two Squid Sisters, Marie recruited Artemis and Orion to save Callie and the Great Zapfish.

Tropes:

    Callie (Agent 1)
One of the two Squid Sisters, Callie was brainwashed by DJ Octavio when she went to visit him.

Tropes:

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Was at first, before Marie fixed her. Except the brainwashing is much deeper-rooted, and she's currently a sleeper agent for Octavio, who is actively reprogramming herself to prevent herself from being reverted to her old self again.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Finds out to her shock that she actually has attracted the eye of multiple Octoling girls who she befriended while she was working for the Octarians.
  • Genki Girl: Well... It's Callie, of course she is.
  • Robosexual: Has a crush on Zero, and started going out with him at the first opportunity.

    Ethan Springs (Agent 3)
One of the original two Agents who fought against Octavio in Octo Valley. A Roller main and something of a battle junkie. Is currently dating Marino.

Tropes:

    Ayane Higashi (Agent 4)
One of the original two Agents who fought against Octavio in Octo Valley. A quiet and stoic Charger main.

Tropes:

  • Amicable Exes: With Ethan - they used to date, but it didn't work out.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Ayane makes it clear she'd yank out Marino's skull and beat her to death with it if she hurts Ethan or breaks his heart.
  • The Stoic: By comparison to the other Agents. The fact that she actually becomes rather emotive during an argument with Ethan blindsides everyone else.

    Axl Slade (Agent 7)
A former Lieutenant in the Octarian Army and Iris' first (and for a while only) friend, he's a Mimic Octopus capable of manipulating his form to a degree that other Octolings can't. Usually uses Dualies.

Tropes:

  • Cain and Abel: The Abel in his dynamic with Lumine, to the point where the latter threatened to kill him when they were younger.
  • Closet Key: For Orion.
  • Maternal Death? Blame the Child!: Hinted that he suspects that his father blames him for his mother's Death by Childbirth. His older brother Lumine, on the other hand, absolutely does.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: As a Mimic Octopus, he's capable of manipulating his form and ink around him to change his shape in various ways, though there are limits to this ability.

    Iris Mizuno (Agent 8)
An Octarian noblewoman and a former Colonel in the Octarian Army, she has a split personality named "Colonel". She uses a prototype Splatana.

Tropes:

  • Love at First Sight: Gained a crush on Artemis from the very moment they met.
  • Split Personality: Colonel is a separate personality she developed to cope with the stresses of her upbringing.

    Karlene Knight (Agent 9)
A trans girl and the leader of an ink battle team consisting of herself, Artemis, Hinata and Iris. Uses normal shooters.

Tropes:

    Hinata Fujiwara (Agent 10)
A cheerful Inkling girl who mains a Splatling, she sees the positives in everything due to a mental condition, but can still pull her weight just fine.

Tropes:

  • Genki Girl: Much like Bobble Hat, though this is due to a mental condition. She's positive about nearly everything.

    Liam (Agent 11)
The leader of an ink battle team consisting of himself, Orion, Koji and Axl. Uses a Roller.

Tropes:

  • Bully Hunter: Protected Koji from bullies before he transitioned, and stuck around him so the bullies wouldn't try again, resulting in their friendship.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Has anger issues, and he's aware of it. It used to be bad enough that he drove Karlene away years ago, before they reconciled.

    Koji (Agent 12)
A trans guy and Liam's second in command on their ink batting team. Uses a Blaster.

Tropes:

  • Chessmaster Sidekick: While Liam is no slouch in terms of smarts and ability, he has anger issues and tunnel vision that Koji is around to restrain.

    Zero (Agent 0)
Dr. Wily's final creation, meant to be the ultimate combat robot. Ultimately was fixed up and came over to the side of the heroes, being given the honorary designation of "Agent 0" by Cap'n Cuttlefish.

Tropes:

  • Ax-Crazy: When he's got the The Virus inside of him and brainwashed by Tartar.
  • Chick Magnet: Attracts a lot of female attention, and he's aware of it.

    Cap'n Craig Cuttlefish
130 years old and a veteran of the Great Turf War, the Cap'n is the leader of the New Squidbeak Splatoon.

Tropes:

  • We Used to Be Friends: Laments that his friendship with Octavio fell apart due to the war and wants to somehow reconcile.

Inkopolis

    Marina Ida
Part of Off The Hook, an expert engineer, Pearl's roommate and Marino's younger sister.

Tropes:

  • Gadgeteer Genius: Like in canon. She was even able to reverse-engineer the Time Skimmer.
  • Sentimental Drunk: She gets very friendly with Pearl when she's had a few bottles, ranging from gentle cooing to "Do me now!".
  • Shrinking Violet: At times. She very much turns into a flustered wreck when Pearl teases her about how attractive she is in front of everyone else.

    Pearl
Part of Off The Hook and Marina's roommate. Loud, boisterous and not shy about showing her affection towards Marina.

Tropes:

  • Super-Scream: Uses the "Princess Cannon" twice during the final battle of the Octo Expansion arc, first to destroy the NILS Statue and then to stun Gamma long enough for X, Axl and Iris to finish the job.

    Ciel
A robotics doctor and a former Octarian engineer who designed the Octobot King, she wants to create a new renewable power source to resolve the Octarian energy crisis and remove a pressure point between Inklings and Octarians.

Tropes:

  • The Atoner: Regrets being involved in the creation of the Octobot King.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Like Marina, though her specialty is largely in the field of robotics.

    Merga (Hydro Dragoon)
Ciel's first notable robotic creation, based on both X and Zero's blueprints. A water dragoness robot designed to step into X's role as a protector of Inkopolis, as both a fighter and as a search and rescue specialist. Also, she's Ayane's roommate.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Heroism: Was programmed to be a heroic and empathetic person by Ciel, whereas Merga in Freedom Planet 2 was the Big Bad blinded by Moral Myopia and Revenge Before Reason, and Magma Dragoon was a traitor to the Maverick Hunters who destroyed Sky Lagoon (likely killing thousands of people) for a chance to fight X and Zero. Though considering both her components, it remains to be seen whether she'll stay heroic or not.
  • Blood Knight: She's a female version of Magma Dragoon, of course she is.
  • Combat Medic: As part of her search and rescue kit, she also has in-built healing spray.
  • Composite Character: Of Merga and Magma Dragoon, largely retaining her appearance from the former with visual and personality aspects of the latter.
  • Kamehame Hadouken: Was programmed with mastery of Ansatsuken, and can throw both normal Hadokens and water-based versions.
  • Making a Splash: Naturally, since she is a water dragon robot.

    Marino Ida
Marina's older sister, she is a former elite Octarian operative and now a supermodel.

Tropes:

  • All Amazons Want Heracles: Almost immediately starts going out with Ethan after he defeats her in a rematch.
  • The Atoner: Feels remorse for helping kidnap the Great Zapfish the first time and nearly killing Ethan.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Is Marina's sister in this series.
  • Shipper on Deck: Thinks Marina and Pearl are perfect for each other, and even gives Pearl some bedroom tips.

    Dr. Thomas Light (AI)
The digitized mind of the good doctor, still around to help X find his footing in the strange new world.

Tropes:

  • Big Good: One of the few figures to serve as this.
  • Miles to Go Before I Sleep: He makes it clear to Wily's AI that he knows the time of humans is over and he plans to delete himself once squids and robots are living together in harmony and equality.

    Ahato Mizuta (DJ Dedf1sh)
An Octarian soldier who tried to make it to the surface but ended up being roped into working for Kamabo Corp. against her own will, she willingly underwent the Sanitization process to remove her emotions. Is now undergoing treatment to reverse her Sanitization.

Tropes:

  • Happiness in Slavery: Or, at least, emotionlessness in slavery. Due to being forced to work for Kamabo against her will, she decided to undergo the Sanitization process willingly so she wouldn't feel utterly miserable doing so, and so she could focus entirely on her music.

    Professor Marcus Gaudile
A platypus medical professor at the Inkopolis University Hospital.

Tropes:

    Cinnamon
An Inkling medical postgraduate and Professor Gaudile's assistant, and Marino's roommate.

Tropes:

  • Nice Girl: Is generally pleasant to everyone she meets, and nursed Marino back to health.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: She's Gaudile's assistant rather than his creation/daughter.

    Mr. Grizz
The head of Grizzco, he's willing to pay out quite a bit of money in exchange for the collection of golden eggs. Seems to know more about the human era than he should.

Tropes:

  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: As per usual, sending a bunch of teens into a highly hostile environment.
  • Loose Lips: Reveals that he's aware of the term "Robot Master" when he first "appears". Zero finds this suspicious.

Octarian Empire

    DJ Octavio
The Emperor of the Octarians, DJ Octavio is a veteran of the Great Turf War, a former friend of Cap'n Cuttlefish and now seeks to start the war again to try and take control of Inkling territory.

Tropes:

    Gate
An ambitious Octarian scientist, the main antagonist of the "Unswimmingly" arc, and one of the main targets of the mission the arc focuses on. Also, he's Alia's ex-boyfriend.

Tropes:

  • Crazy-Prepared: He developed his own set of security systems in the base he's stationed in explicitly in anticipation of the New Squidbeak Splatoon infiltrating it, and powered up his Shapeshifter Mode Lock device in advance of their arrival in his lab.
  • The Dreaded: The fact that he's involved causes Iris to suggest the New Squidbeak Splatoon should be more prepared for whatever he might have in store. Turns out she's right.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: So far has shown no combat capacity, but his experiments are still dangerous enough that his direct involvement isn't necessary... Yet.
  • Shapeshifter Mode Lock: The device he created forces Inklings and Octolings into swim mode and prevents them from changing back.

    Ferham
One of the Octarian generals. Also, Callie's ex-girlfriend.

Tropes:

    Red Slade
One of the Octarian generals and the leader of the "Red Alert" regiment. Is Axl and Lumine's father.

Tropes:

  • Parents as People: He's evidently not the best father, but it's also hinted that he knows that. When he encounters Axl again, he's quite friendly towards him, though the feeling isn't exactly mutual.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Is Axl's father rather than his former boss.

    Lumine Slade
Red's second in command, son and older brother to Axl, whom he holds in contempt.

Tropes:

  • Cain and Abel: Is the Cain to Axl's Abel. He even openly threatened to kill Axl when they were younger.
  • Maternal Death? Blame the Child!: Blames Axl for their mother's death.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Axl and Lumine had no relation in the X series, aside from being New Generation Reploids. Here, they're siblings, and in fact Lumine is older than Axl.

    Scarface
One of the Octarian generals.

Tropes:

  • Blood Knight: Is eager to engage in honorable battle with the New Squidbeak Splatoon. The feeling is mutual with Ethan.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Absolutely understands why the New Squidbeak Splatoon are fighting and why so many Octolings are fleeing Octarian society, but he is fighting to prevent his country from collapsing entirely.
  • The Rival: With Ethan, and the feeling is mutual, considering Ethan is eager to fight him when he finds out Scarface has appeared.

    Botos
One of the Octarian generals. Not an Octoling, unlike the others, but more like the Octo Samurai. Like his Command Mission counterpart he's a greedy coward who sucks up to his superiors for more power.

Tropes:

  • Dirty Coward: Which is why Ethan and Ayane can't help but make fun of and troll him at every opportunity.
  • Fat Bastard: Like his original counterpart, which his enemies also make fun of.

Kamabo Corp. & and Wily Numbers

    Commander Tartar
An AI created by an unnamed Professor, he was made to pass on humankind's knowledge to the next generation of sapient species. However, due to going rampant and seeing Inklings and Octarians as failed successors to humanity, he decided to try and bring back humankind instead. Is initially the antagonist of the "Octo Expansion" and "Hostile Takeover" arcs, being usurped by Wily and Quint, respectively.

Tropes:

    Dr. Albert Wily (AI)
The digitized mind of the mad scientist who threatened the world many times, his AI has degraded and he knows almost nothing but hate, at this point...

Tropes:

  • Killed Off for Real: His AI degrading enough that he neglected to back himself up resulted in his demise once Gamma was destroyed.
  • Villains Want Mercy: As usual, once things don't go his way, he prostrates himself and begs to be spared. His luck finally runs out, however.

    Quick Man
One of Dr. Wily's Robot Masters, Quick Man is cocky and overconfident. He is Axl's main rival during the Octo Expansion arc.

Tropes:

    Shadow Man
A ninja-themed Robot Master, originally a Kuiper Droid created by Ra Moon before he was restored by Dr. Wily. He is Iris' main rival during the Octo Expansion arc.

Tropes:

  • Faking the Dead: Does this to escape being destroyed after Iris defeats him the second time.

The Mega Man Killers & the Genesis Unit
A group of six robots set aside by Tartar to act as a backup plan in case his original plan falls through. At the end of "Hostile Takeover" after both Quint and Tartar are Killed Off for Real, they decide to make amends for the hard they've done.

Tropes:

  • Heel–Face Turn: Finding no other purpose after Wily and any viable successor are gone, they accept the invitation to redeem themselves, cleaning up their own messes and becoming Ciel's lab assistants.

    Quint (Spoilers!)
An alternate timeline version of Mega Man. Initially taken over by a backup copy of Tartar, he decides to take matters into his own hands using the Time Skimmer, becoming the final antagonist of the "Hostile Takeover" arc.

Tropes:

  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Self-destructs after admitting his folly because he was infected by the Sigma Virus from an alternate timeline.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Tries to change the timeline to save humankind, and later decides to go further and take control of the entire timestream.

Other

    Morrigan Aensland
Yes, that Morrigan Aensland. First appears in the Unswimmingly arc as a spy in the Octarian base where Gate is conducting his experiments. Is considered neutral in the conflict, as far as anyone currently knows.

Tropes:

  • But Not Too Bi: Averted. She straight up drains Marie and Callie with a kiss, and both of them can't help but feel the experience was rather intimate.
  • Shapeshifting Seducer: Can take on the form of an Inkling or Octoling, and uses the former to seduce Marie and Callie.
