Slick Frame at the beginning of most episodes

Ask Mario is a YouTube series based on the Super Mario Bros. franchise created by voiceover artist Slick Frame. In this series, the Mario Bros (both voiced by Slick Frame) and Bowser answer questions found in the comments section on YouTube. It was first released on YouTube in 2019, and its animation style consists of multiple PNGs of each character as made by artists such as Nintendrawer and DoJayMi.

Ask Mario follows the comedic hijinks in the interactions between the Mario Bros, Bowser and the show's "Tech Boy" Slick Frame as they answer questions sent in by fans. In addition, starting in Season 2, there have been guest characters making appearances, such as Donkey Kong and DoJayMi, providing even more opportunities for hijinks.

The whole series can be found here.

Ask Mario provides examples of:

  • Absurd Phobia: Mario's fear of pianos, thanks to his encounter with an evil one in Super Mario 64.
    • Bowser is revealed to have once been scared of clowns in "TV Escape!”
  • Accidental Misnaming: In all his appearances on the show, DK calls Luigi "Green Mario". He gets a Pet the Dog moment near the end of "TV Escape!" when, while saying goodbye to the Mario Bros, he starts to say "Green Mar-", and then, after seeing Luigi's sad expression, switches to "Luigi".
    • He also mistakenly calls Slick Frame "Red Hood Guy", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Sick Phlegm" and "Scrawny Hood Guy".
    • Cappy calls Slick Frame "Sick Phlegm" in "Bowser Serenade".
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Bowser has this reaction when he hears that he ran all the way back to the stage when he could've used his Klown Kopter in "SUPER CROWN SCARE!".
  • Affectionate Nickname: Princess Peach mainly calls Mario by "Sweetie."
  • Always Wanted to Say That: In "TV Escape!", DoJayMi says he always wanted to use his "Be not afraid" bit.
  • Anything but That!: Bowser's reaction to Slick Frame's threat to put him in Icicle Mountain from Super Smash Bros. Melee.
  • Argument of Contradictions: Bowser and DK's argument about where chicken nuggets come from in "TV Escape!".
    • Slick Frame and Mario's argumemt over whether people choose what they like in "Ask Mario- Amiibo Edition!"
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Luigi asking Mario why he didn't take him along in Paper Mario 64.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Luigi describing why he hates Dimentio:
Luigi: He took over my mind, tried to destroy all worlds, and worst of all, he insulted my mustache!
    • Bowser imagining several things that his minions could make Mario do if they possessed him with a capture hat: drown in quicksand, walk under a Thwomp, get eaten by an eel, jump into a bottomless pit, drown in poison, swim in lava, and write offensive tweets that ruin his image forever.
    • When Luigi asks why Mario gave Bowser Jr. a stern look while talking with him in Bowser's Fury, Mario has this to say:
Mario: Luigi, imagine if King Boo had a son. An obnoxious, bratty little kid who tried to frame you for vandalism, kidnaps your princess over and over, constantly attacks you, and- worst of all- tickles you with a paintbrush! If he came up to you and asked you for help, would you use less muscles to smile?
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: After Slick Frame enters the scene in "TV Escape!" and as he sees that no one's in the TV anymore:
Slick Frame: Hey guys, sorry to keep you waaaiiit a minute. How'd you get out?
  • Author Avatar: Slick Frame appears on the show in the form of PNGs, with the only exception being the "Amiibo Episodes", which are live-action episodes, taking place in his sound booth, where viewers can see the real deal.
    • When Mario, Luigi and Bowser watch SMG4, Mario expresses surprise at the series' creator appearing in it. Slick Frame, affirming the self-inserts, notes that he sees the appeal.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Bowser Jr. wants to answer questions in "FURY KOOPY!", he says "Let's hear 'em, nerd boy!", Luigi explains that he doesn't know where Slick Frame is, only for Jr. to say, "I was talking to you, dummy!"
    • At first it seems like Bowser Jr. was grounded for corrupting his father with a magic paintbrush, only for Bowser to reveal that Jr. is grounded for painting Mario's mustache on Bowser's face.
  • Banana Peel: "Donkey Kong is here!" opens with Mario slipping on one.
  • Berserk Button: Whatever you do, DON'T CALL DAISY "DIET PEACH" TO HER FACE. Amiibo!Bowser found this out the hard way in "Peach and Daisy Amiibo!".
    • Do not remind Mario of the CDi game.
    • Don't remind Bowser of Bowsette, or anything related to fanart, for that matter. He also doesn't like being called by "Koopy."
    • Luigi does not take kindly of the use of Cappy in any way. Especially from a previous episode where Mario revealed he used him on Yoshi which caused Luigi to get real upset with him. When Bowser brought up Cappy as an idea for Mario's Final Smash, Luigi quickly shoots the idea down.
    • Also, for Slick himself, insulting Diddy is a major "No" for him. When Cranky did this, Slick responded with a death threat to Cranky.
  • Big Ball of Violence:
    • Happens at the end of "King K. Fool!" when Bowser and DK beat each other up and get the Mario Bros. caught up in it.
    • Slick Frame attacks Bowser in one at the end of "Peach's ???" when the former sees his tablet in Bowser's possession.note
  • Big Eater: Discussed in "Bowsette Google Search?!" when Mario points out that he and Luigi have seen Bowser eat lots of junk food and expresses doubt that Bowser could still stay in shape without exercising.
    • In "Rosalina or Peach?", Bowser makes Slick Frame order 50 boxes of 20-piece chicken nuggets with buffalo sauce for him.
  • Big "NO!": Bowser does this when he sees Luigi wielding the Infinity Gauntlet in the latter's Imagine Spot of a game based on Avengers: Endgame.
    • Both Bowser and Luigi do this to stop Mario's awful singing near the end of "SMG4 reaction!".
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Bowser does this sometimes if someone annoys him too much.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Luigi does this when he hears that Mario used Cappy to capture Yoshi.
    • Bowser does several in a row when he sees a clip of the evil piano from Super Mario 64.
    • Bowser Jr. does this on the phone when he realizes Mario tricked him into typing "Bite me, Junior. Love, Mario".
    • This is the first thing Mario and Bowser do when they hear a question about the former treating Jr. like a son.
    • Bowser Jr. does it again when Mario says that the former would make a good sidekick or hero.
    • This is how Bowser reacts when he realizes that he said Slick Frame could use the former's credit card.
  • Blah, Blah, Blah: Slick Frame does this while rambling on about how weird he finds Toads eating mushrooms.
  • Blatant Lies: Luigi tells Mario that his singing was good, despite that he clearly didn't enjoy the latter's off-key rendition of "Lifelight".
    • When a concerned Mario asks a nervous Bowser if he's okay in "Luigi and Daisy's First Date?", the latter says he is, despite clearly sounding and looking otherwise.
  • Blue with Shock: The characters can sometimes become this when shocked, as well as disgusted.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Luigi uses Mario's line "Let's get this train wreck a-rolling!" in "SUPER CROWN SCARE!", which the latter lampshades.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Bowser's seventh idea for a prank to play on Mario is to have him enter a warp pipe leading to a women's locker room, a lava chamber, or a lava chamber in a women's locker room.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Given that this is a show where characters answer questions from fans, this trope runs rampant throughout the series.
  • Brick Joke: In "Bowsette Google Search?!", after Bowser fails to catch Slick Frame while chasing him, the former vows to get the latter when the episode ends. Sure enough, at the end, Bowser is still intent on attacking Slick Frame.
    • In "Rosalina or Peach?" Bowser demands that Slick Frame order lots of chicken nuggets with buffalo sauce for him. At the end of the episode, Slick Frame brings in the chicken nuggets, but reveals that there was no buffalo sauce, so he got honey mustard instead, incurring Bowser's wrath.
Bowser: You have three seconds to start running. (Slick Frame drops the nuggets with an Oh, Crap! expression.)
    • In the beginning of "Bankruptcy Blues", Luigi has a question he wants to ask Mario, only to forget what it is. Later in the episode, he finally remembers his question; he wanted to know if Donkey Kong took place in Brooklyn or New Donk City.
    • In "MARIO PARTY RAGE!", Luigi asks Donkey Kong whether or not he'll punch Bowser, and DK replies, "We'll see." Later, after Mario unwittingly eats an orange grenade that DK wanted Bowser to eat, and gets sent flying off the screen, the big ape says, "Worth a try," and punches Bowser into an offscreen turntable.
    • In "TV Escape!", DoJayMi lies about not drawing Peach, whose artwork was still in progress, and Bowser threatens to roast the true artist alive and make everyone watch. Near the end of the episode, Slick Frame reveals the truth, incurring Bowser's rage.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Mario states that if Bowser jumpscared Luigi in Luigi's Mansion, a lot of kids playing the game would've wet their pants.
  • Brutal Honesty: Bowser engages in this a few times, such as criticizing Mario's singing or rating Slick Frame's annoyingness at infinity.
  • Bucket Booby-Trap: A variant in "Bowser Pranks Mario!": Bowser's third idea for a prank to play on Mario is rigging the doors of Ghost Houses with buckets of Luigi's diarrhea.
  • Buffy Speak: Bowser sometimes does this when talking about a word he doesn't know, like "platypus" or "turntable".
  • Bullying a Dragon: In "Peach and Daisy Amiibo!", Amiibo!Bowser makes fun of Slick Frame for trying to tear up oranges in his garbage disposal, insults his mother and mocks his taste in clothes. In response, Slick Frame threatens to tear up Amiibo!Bowser in the garbage disposal, attempts to run him over with his car, and puts him in his toilet, repsectively.
  • Butt-Monkey: Bowser and Slick Frame. The former even lampshades it in "King K. Fool!" when he complains about the others constantly making fun of him on the show.
  • Call-Back: Upon being asked about what games the Mario Bros. and Bowser would like to see remastered or get a sequel to in "Bowsette Google Search?!", Bowser says "Bowser's Inside Story! On Nintendo Switch!", which he previously chanted in the first episode when Mario and Luigi chanted "Please remaster Thousand-Year Door!"
    • When Mario says that Yoshis don't mind being punched, Bowser reminds him of when he said that they're okay with being dropped off cliffs.
    • In "Rogen Kong!", when the Mario Bros and Bowser express their annoyance at Slick Frame's frequently asking for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door to be remastered, Slick Frame reminds the Mario Bros about the chant they did in the first episode.

    • When DoJayMi asks who said anything about getting the Mario Bros, Bowser and Donkey Kong out of the TV, Luigi answers, "Uh, you, on the phone, like 4 episodes ago?"
    • When Slick Frame sees the broken TV and says, "That's a lotta money down the drain," Bowser quips, "Just like your oranges?"
    • At the beginning of "It's Toad Time!!!", Bowser notes that the new studio, revealed near the end of "TV Escape!" still had no color yet.
      • Later in the same episode, Bowser and Mario get into an escalating argument like in "Bowsette Google Search?!". Slick Frame stops their fight, telling them it's no time for a callback. Mario even asks Bowser, "To be continued?" and the latter confirms it.
    • Slick Frame and DoJayMi also say "To be continued" to each other when Bowser tells them to stop fanboying over The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
    • Horatio also gets mentioned in "Bowser Serenade".
  • Calling Me a Logarithm: When Toadette first claims that Bowser is a telepath to trick him, he angrily asks, "What did you call me?!"
  • Calling Your Nausea: After Luigi imagines having a spinoff game based on Avengers: Endgame, Mario says, "And I am going to throw up."
  • Camera Abuse: DK punching Bowser into the TV screen looks like this. It's what finally gets them out of the TV.
  • Cardiovascular Love: Hearts appear around Mario when he reminisces about his Faceship in "Yoshi Abuse?!".
    • The same thing happens with Luigi when he thinks about Daisy near the end of the same episode.
    • In "Bankruptcy Blues", hearts briefly appear around Bowser and in his eyes when he says that Peach makes him feel warm and fuzzy inside.
  • Catchphrase: Starting with "Donkey Kong Is Here!", Slick Frame has "Amateur/lazy video/audio editing skills activate!" whenever he's about to change the video software or audio.
  • Chainsaw Good: After finding out that DoJayMi was the artist who hadn't finished the artwork for Peach yet, Bowser chases him and Slick Frame around the studio with a chainsaw.
  • Chirping Crickets: These play in the background during an awkward pause after the Mario Bros are asked what their adventure in Hotel Mario was like.
  • Clip Show: "TV Escape!" begins with clips from episodes 13, 14 and 17, to show how the Mario Bros, Bowser and DK spent the past few episodes trapped in a TV.

    • The Mario Bros thinking SMG4 stands for "Super Mario Galaxy 4" in "SMG4 reaction!".

    • Luigi thinking Slick Frame has Taylor Swift's phone number.

  • Covered in Kisses: Luigi returns from a date with Daisy like this in "It's Toad Time!!!".
  • Cuckoo Finger Twirl: Both Mario and Slick Frame have PNGs that show them doing this.
  • Curse Cut Short: In "Donkey Kong is here!", when Slick Frame's video editing puts the Mario Bros, Bowser and DK inside a flat-screen TV, Bowser says "Oh, you son of a..." then gets censored by a bleep.
    • In "Rogen Kong!", when asked why Donkey Kong got his name, Bowser starts to say that it's because DK's "a big dumb a-", only for Mario to tell him to watch his language. It's then subverted when Bowser confusedly asks, "Dumb... animal?"
    • In "Peach and Daisy Amiibo!", After Slick Frame drops Amiibo!Bowser in a toilet for insulting his taste in clothes, the latter says "Oh, you son of a..." before the former closes the lid.
    • When Luigi gets a question claiming that Professor E. Gadd sold King Boo in a garage sale, he gets into an angry rant and says, "Why, the little swirly-eyed, snot-nosed mother-" before Mario stops him and reveals that the claim was false.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Mario and Luigi are quickly reduced to this when shown pictures of Bowzer puppies, much to their namesake's annoyance.
    • Toadette is reduced to this when she sees Buckinberry in a cat suit in a Super Mario 3D World image.
  • Deadly Prank: Bowser's first, fourth, fifth and eighth ideas for pranks to play on Mario: moving his house into an active volcano while he's sleeping, putting a flamethrower in his toilet, cutting the brake line in his go-kart, and painting Poison Mushrooms to look like 1-Up Mushrooms. Mario lampshades the first idea as being more like homicide.

    • When Slick Frame tells the Mario Bros, Bowser and Donkey Kong that they're going on a field trip, Mario is excited until he realizes Slick Frame said "you're" instead of "we're".
    • In "Peach and Daisy Amiibo!", after Mario asks if Slick Frame fired his artists again, and the latter denies it, it takes Mario a few seconds to realize what Slick Frame said.
    • Slick Frame has used a couple in response to DoJayMi's puns.
  • Delirious Misidentification: After Slick Frame, who got stomped on by Fury!Bowser, gets up and Luigi asks if he's okay, the first thing the dazed Slick Frame says is "I'm fine, Tails and Sonic." Then at the end he calls Luigi "Waluigi".
  • Didn't Think This Through: Slick Frame tends to not look before he leaps on certain things. Most notably, he puts the main characters (and DK) in a flat-screen TV to give them more elbow room using his "lazy/amateur video editing skills"... only to later realize that he has no idea how to get them out. They end up being stuck in their for almost a year before breaking out by complete accident.
    • Mario calls Peach during "Waluigi in Smash?!" in hopes of her delivering a special message celebrating ten episodes of the series, only to remember too late that he should've asked her in advance.
    • When Bowser notices one viewer that asked him a question has his name in their username, he threatens to find where they live and sneak into their room while they're sleeping if they try to hack into his bank account. When Luigi asks what Bowser would do to the person, Bowser realizes he hasn't really thought of anything, and suggests maybe farting on the person's pillow and giving them pinkeye.

  • Don't Say Such Stupid Things!: How Bowser tells Luigi to stop pitying himself in one episode.
  • Dreadful Musician: Mario's performance of "Lifelight" and his attempt to sing the ending speech in "SMG4 reaction!" are very shrill and off-key.
    • Mario also does a dreadful performance of one of the pieces from Super Mario 3D World.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: How Luigi reacts when Mario reveals he was only joking about the possibility of Lady Bow eating the former, which understandably freaks Luigi out.
  • Dumb Muscle: Bowser, full stop, though he doesn't consider himself stupid. He thinks chicken nuggets grow on trees, for crying out loud!
    • Donkey Kong isn't much better, what with the poor grammar in his English subtitles, and he thinks chickens lay nuggets.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The first four episodes originally just had one PNG per character. Thankfully, these were later remastered with multiple PNGs for everyone, making them more expressive.
    • In the first episode all the questions are from Slick Frame, whereas the rest of the show involves questions posted by various viewers in the comment section on YouTube.
      • Also, the first episode is the only one without a specific title.
    • Bowser was originally voiced by Slick Frame in the first two episodes, but starting in the third episode, "Rosalina or Peach?", he was voiced by Tyler Fultz. Luigi lampshades the change in this episode, asking "Is it just me or do you sound different?" After an awkward pause, Bowser replies, "It's... just you."
  • Embarrassing Damp Sheets: Discussed in the Season 1 marathon. After Bowser calls Luigi a bed-wetting sissy, Mario says, "Hey, Luigi doesn't wet the bed," then, after a pause, adds, "Well, actually..." before catching himself.
  • Epic Fail: Discussed in "Peach and Daisy Amiibo!", when Slick Frame reveals that he broke his garbage disposal trying to tear up three small oranges in it (and without peeling them, no less). This leaves the Amiibo!characters laughing their heads off.
  • Excited Episode Title!: Most episodes have these.
  • Exit, Pursued by a Bear: Quite a few episodes end with Bowser chasing Slick Frame around the studio.

    • Slick Frame has this when he tells DK about liking Diddy Kong better than him, only to regret saying it.
    • After Donkey Kong is asked why he got his name, Luigi looks up the answer on his phone and this happens:
Luigi: (to Donkey Kong) According to the Mario Wiki, Shigeru Miyamoto says that he chose the name "Donkey" to... (gets nervous) uh, reflect your, uh, stupidity? (DK growls) His words, n-not mine.
    • Toad starts telling Mario about Toadette's crush on the latter in the first two Paper Mario games, only to remember that was a secret.
    • Mario has this when he starts talking about how Luigi used to have a crush on his lab partner.

  • Go to Your Room!: After Bowser Jr. snickers about his dad being called "Koopy" over the phone, the latter says this. After Jr. points out that he's already in his room, he gets sent to his dad's room instead.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: The Trope Namer is explained here. Apparently, Bowser isn't invited to the spin-offs. He just shows up and everyone tolerates his presence as long as he follows the rules.
    • The series itself is an example, as Bowser is legally obligated to appear on the show as part of his contract with Nintendo. Except not really.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: At one point in "King K. Fool!" Bowser describes the uncomfortable environment he's in as "hostile as heck".
  • Got Me Doing It: As soon as Bowser quips that there won't be "mush room" for other characters if Nintendo keeps making Toads, he immediately regrets what he just said and Mario asks if DoJayMi rubbed off on him.

    • Earlier in the same episode, Mario himself has this when he realizes he doesn't have a good reason for not taking Luigi with him in Paper Mario 64.
      • Even earlier than that, after Mario mentions that Goombario started a Mario fan club since their adventure, the former feels guilty for not keeping in touch with the latter.
    • Slick Frame has this in "Ask Mario- Amiibo Edition!" when he realizes that his liking Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door isn't any different from the people he fired having their own different tastes in things.

  • Hypocritical Humor: In "Rosalina or Peach?" Mario compares Bowser to people who are so obsessed with being cool that they wear shades indoors. After Bowser threatens to kill Mario if he doesn't shut up, the former starts wondering where his shades are.
    • Lampshaded by Luigi in the Season 1 marathon when expressing his displeasure that Mario won't let him make a Hotel Mario joke, but will allow Peach to do so.
    • Mario thinks Bowser's a creep for keeping pictures of Peach under his bed, only for Luigi to say, "You're one to talk," causing an embarrassed Mario to try denying that he does the same thing.
    • Lampshaded by Mario in "MARIO PARTY RAGE!" when he notes that Donkey Kong is okay with Cranky kidnapping Pauline, but not with Mario caging Cranky.
    • After Mario calls Bowser "Koopy" yet again in "King K. Fool!", Bowser replies, "Stop calling me names, you dingbat!"

Toad: Did you guys really think that was me?
  • Ignorant of Their Own Ignorance: Bowser. He thinks he's smarter than he really is. Slick Frame: (with a Death Glare) Diss Diddy again and you'll be seeing Wrinkly Kong a lot sooner.
  • In-Series Nickname: Bowser calls Slick Frame "Tech Boy" and Luigi "Greenie".
