Current Letter Bees and their Dingoes

    Lag Seeing
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lag_manga_color.jpg
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro

The main protagonist. A very focused and unfailingly polite young boy. He is a former letter delivered by Gauche Suede to his aunt. His encounter with Gauche inspired him to become a Letter Bee. His Spirit Amber attack is called "Red Needle" and is able to visualize the memories held within whatever it is shot at. He can also somehow control the direction it goes. He has Spirit Amber implanted in his left eye socket.

  • Adaptational Dumbass: In the manga, he figures out that Gauche never actually got his heart back, and was merely Noir acting according to the memories he got from Lag's letter bullet. In the anime, Niche and Noir have to spell this out to him.
  • Ancestral Weapon: Sylvette gives Gauche's Nocturne #20 to Lag as Gauche wanted Lag to have his gun when Lag became a Letter Bee too.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: He makes an adorable girl. In the Veritably Abbey arc, he disguises himself as a young named Lala, and in Episode 42 of the anime, he pretends to be Sylvette.
  • Berserk Button: Making light of the heart within letters or destroying other people's mail is one of the few things that gets him very angry.
  • Chaste Hero: He's only 12, so he never considers his intimate relationship with Niche as anything romantic. Subverted later when he proclaims his Love Confession to Sylvette, showing that he's not completely Oblivious to Love.
  • Determinator: He sees everything he starts to the end, no matter what.
  • Energy Weapon: Like everyone else, but he can also shoot them from his hands.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Gauche, as a result of their travels to Cambel. Part of it involves learning of each other's pasts, and part of it involves fighting together against a Gaichuu.
  • Foil: To pre-amnesia Gauche. Gauche is rather stoic, while Lag is a crybaby. Lag's goal is to reunite with his Missing Mom, while Gauche pursues a promotion to help take care of his sister, despite knowing that it will separate them for a while. As a Letter Bee, Gauche is strictly by-the-book, while Lag is more willing to bend the rules and go beyond the call of duty.
  • Glass Cannon: Like most Bees, but he seems to take the cake. He has excellent firepower with his Akabari needles, but he's vulnerable to being injured, or to draining himself by overexerting himself.
  • Goal in Life: Three. To become Head Bee, to find his mother again (which ties into the first, since she's most likely in the capital) and to see Gauche again.
  • Guns Akimbo: In the finale of the anime, he wields Nocturne and Gymnopiede together.
  • Hand Blast: Because his Spirit Amber is directly attached to his body, Lag can fire heart bullets from his hand without needing a gun.
  • Heroic BSoD: Lag suffers a severe blow to his confidence after Gauche's Face–Heel Turn
  • Heroic RRoD: He puts a lot into his heart bullets; using a lot weakens the user, and using too much will turn them into an Empty Shell. As a result, he gets sick often.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the end, he sacrifices himself to defeat Spiritus and bring back the natural sun.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He greatly admires Gauche, the Letter Bee who inspired him become one himself.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His hair covers up his left eye to conceal the red Spirit Amber in his eye socket.
  • In Place of an Eye: Within his left eye socket lies a piece of red Spirit Amber containing a Spirit Insect, implanted during his time of birth.
  • Inhuman Eye Concealers: His hair bangs cover the Spirit Amber in his left eye socket.
  • I Will Find You: His main goal from early in the series is finding his mother who was taken to Akatsuki when he was little. After hearing about his hero Gauche's mysterious disappearance, Lag makes finding him his other goal.
  • Loophole Abuse: He occasionally takes advantage of this.
    • In Niche's introductory story, Connor tells him that since Niche's postage slip doesn't have all the information, the Letter Bees can't legally ship her. Lag points out that since he isn't an official Bee just yet, the rules don't apply to him.
    • At the end of Niche's introductory story, Lag delivers her to Love Someone Down, but forgets to get a stamp to confirm receipt of the delivery. He comes back to realize that Love Someone Down is a freak show, and Niche breaks out. With Niche's shipping information no longer legible and Lag having forgotten to get a stamp, he considers the delivery incomplete, and has Niche accompany him.
    • Rei asks Lag to find out who's sending postcard letters to her, but the actual artist, Kimidori, forces Lag to swear that he won't tell Rei. Lag agrees, only to hear Colbasso try to falsely claim credit for what Rei did. Lag then says that he promised not to tell Rei, but not to shoot a Shindan, so he fires Akabari at the postcard to show Rei the truth.
  • Magical Eye: He has red spirit amber implanted in his left eye, which gives him stronger heart capacity, firepower and also allows him to fire a heart bullet from his own body, such as from his palm.
  • Meaningful Name: "Lagrima" means tears.
  • Nephewism: After his mother was taken away, he lived five years with his aunt Sabrina. Lag lovingly calls Sabrina his second mother.
  • Nice Guy: He's a very kind and caring boy who easily empathizes with others.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: Every time Niche walks around naked, Lag would frantically run after her, trying to get her wear something.
  • Prone to Tears: He's called a crybaby for how easily he starts crying when he's emotional.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes are naturally red and the Spirit Amber in his left socket is also red. Subverted because he's very benevolent.
  • Save the Villain: On numerous occasions, Lag has chosen protect his enemies, often risking harm in the process.
    • At the end of the Blue Notes Blues arc, he stood up to protect Sarah from the mob.
    • He grabs hold of "Roda's" hand to try to pull her up in the battle near Veritably Abbey.
    • In Episode 48 of the anime, he and Niche shield Garrard and Valentine from Noir when the latter shows up to interrogate the former pair at gunpoint.
  • Series Goal: His goal is to reunite with his Missing Mom, as well as Gauche Suede.
  • Serious Business: Letters and memories, of course. He gets offended at Moc's perfunctory approach to the job, and is furious when Chico tears up an undeliverable letter.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!:
    • During the confrontation with Niche's sister, he replies to her rant about Niche being corrupted by "foolish humans," by saying that to him, someone who hurts her own sister is foolish, and he can't think of anyone who isn't foolish.
    • In Episode 44, Lawrence tries to unnerve Lag by saying that his heart is full of hatred, and he should rely on that for his power. Lag fires back with, "That isn't the heart I want to deliver!"
  • Soul Jar: He's essentially a shard of the Sun given form by the Spirit Amber. Inside him is the souls of many people that the Sun stole to be its light, among them the part that Gauche lost in the Day of Flicker.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Since the anime ends after the battle with Cabernet, Lag does not perform a Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Terrible Artist: After seeing Kimidori's picture postcards to her old friend Rei, Lag's inspired to the same for his old friend Gauche. Cue hilariously badly drawn picture of Gauche firing a Kurobari, which Lag shows to a thoroughly unimpressed Sylvette.
Lag: I can't draw, Niche! No way I can do what Miss Kimidori did...
  • To Be a Master: He wants to be Head Bee.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: Red Needle typically can destroy Gaichu and convey memories to people that resolve their problems, sometimes in the same shot.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: In contrast to people like Mock, wants to see all deliveries through to the end and do so in a way that is good for the sender and recipient.

    Niche
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/niche_in_manga_cover.jpg
Voiced by: Ayumi Fujimura

She is Lag's personal bodyguard, AKA Dingo. Niche was a letter Lag encountered on his way to the Bee-Hive and he delivered to her destination, a side-show circus called Love Someone Down. She is actually the "Child of Maka" (lit. the Child of Greatness) and as a result, has golden, 'sword-like' hair, blue eyes and arms resembling that of a bear.

  • 10-Minute Retirement: She tries to quit being Lag's dingo after drinking poisoned water and subsequenly losing to Roda. She gets better.
  • A-Cup Angst: She normally does not dwell on it, but she will look upon her own chest unfavorably when she's comparing herself to other girls, especially if she perceives a girl as a "threat" (in the sense of her "stealing" Lag away from her). Her excitement of being temporarily aged up is even soured when she realizes she lacks an ample bosom and body (in comparison to Sylvette and her sister).
  • Badass Adorable: She's small, cute as a button, really strong, and her hair can become sharp like a blade. She's able to put up a good fight against Gaichuu, but since she can't fire Shindans, is unable to defeat them herself.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She decides to become Lag's Dingo because he's the first human who has treated her so nicely.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Very attached to Lag and takes her job to protect him very seriously.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Since Lag is her world, she's generally not pleased when she's not the center of his. She also dislikes being assigned as Aria's dingo, since she thinks of herself as Lag's dingo first and foremost.
  • Clothing Damage: Since Lag forbids her from hurting people, she tends to destroy people's clothes when she attacks with her Prehensile Hair.
  • The Comically Serious: She's a grumpy little girl who doesn't understand jokes, but her rather odd habits, and the way people (especially Lag) reacts to it is frequently used as a source of comedy.
  • Cute Monster Girl: She looks like a cute little girl with bear-like claws and Cute Little Fangs.
  • Damsel out of Distress: In second chapter, Lag realizes he just delivered Niche to a circus and heads back to rescue her. When he arrives, Niche already escaped from her cage and destroyed the circus on her own with no problems. Then, she runs into a Gaichuu and Niche can fight it off before Lag fires the heart bullet to finish it off.
  • Dramatic High Perching: She likes jumping to high places while Lag looks up to her from the ground.
  • Forehead of Doom: She has a large and shiny forehead.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has her golden hair tied in twintails that look adorable in a cute little girl like her.
  • Going Commando: At first, she wears nothing under her dress because she doesn't like underwear. Lag convinces her to at least wear his boxers so she doesn't go around flashing everyone.
  • Hide Your Otherness: She wears oven-mitt-like sleeves to cover her bear-like claws.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: When she hears Dr. Thunderland Jr. wants to dissect Steak, Niche gets furious and goes to take Steak back because she won't let anyone else eat him.
  • I Have Many Names: Many people have given her different names through the years, but she never had one she liked until Lag named her Niche.
  • In a Single Bound: She can jump very high.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She doesn't like to wear clothes (the only reason she does is because Lag asked her to), and would strip whenever she's annoyed with Lag to spite him.
  • It Was a Gift: Lag only gave her his boxers because he had no other underwear for her to put on, but since it was the first gift he gave her, she keeps wearing them and refuses to try any other underwear or pants.
  • The Lancer: She's a hot-headed fighter who accompanies the sensitive Non-Action Guy Lag.
  • Little Miss Badass: Despite her childlike looks, she's the primary fighter in Lag's team and one of the best dingoes in the series.
  • Malaproper: Often gets complicated words wrong, such as when Lag mentions that a letter has a fixed delivery date in Episode 13.
  • Never Given a Name: When Lag asks her for her name, she says she doesn't have one. Lag names her Niche after the place he found her and after she takes a liking to Lag, she decides to keep the name.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: Her sea blue eyes are proof that she's a Child of Maka.
  • Prehensile Hair: Her hair can morph into virtually anything, including weapons.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Despite her childlike appearance, she's been around for at least two hundred years.
  • Satellite Character: Her role and prominence mainly center around being Lag's Dingo. Her characterization and motives also focus on her wishing to be by Lag's side and protect him.
  • Serious Business: Being a Dingo.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Despite being sad to say goodbye to her, Lag initially thinks it's too dangerous for Niche to be his dingo as a young girl. He gets over it fairly quickly.
  • Third-Person Person: She refers to herself as "Niche".
  • Took a Level in Badass: She can now make some pretty intricate things with her hair, after training with her sister.
  • Tsundere: She can come off as unfriendly and somewhat rude at first, but she quickly becomes fond of Lag and cares about him. She's still easily annoyed when he pays too much attention to other girls.
  • Tsurime Eyes: The way her eyes slant upward highlights her headstrong personality.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Described as such by the so-called "Roda", who notices that Niche has powerful abilities, but doesn't use them anywhere near their full potential.
  • Wild Child: Her personality is close to feral and she shows very animal-like traits like licking wounds and sniffing for danger.
  • The Worf Effect: Niche is stronger than most ordinary humans and can generally hold her own against Gaichuu (although a Shindan is necessary to actually destroy the Gaichuu). As such, people are shocked whenever an opponent is able to get the upper hand against her, such as "Roda," Niche's sister and Hazel Valentine.

    Steak
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/steak_letter_bee.png
Voiced by: Naomi Nagasawa

A strange creature that followed Niche from Love Someone Down and usually is a Head Pet. Steak seems to have accepted that one day Niche may make good on her desire to eat him.

  • Emergency Food Supply Animal: He's named Steak because Niche considers it her emergency rations.
  • Head Pet: He's usually sitting on Niche's head when the group are travelling together.
  • Last of His Kind: He appears to be a Kapellmeister, a species that once co-existed harmoniously with the Spirit Insects, and was thought to be extinct.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: Nearly his entire body is mouth with a corresponding amount of teeth. As Lag and Connor found out.
  • The Nose Knows: He can sniff out the weaknesses of Gaichuu.
  • Shout-Out: To Fizzgig from The Dark Crystal.
  • Team Pet: This small animal accompanies Lag and Niche in their travels and doesn't have a real purpose other than be their pet.

    Connor Kluff
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/connor_manga_color.jpg

The Bee who escorted Lag to his interview. Connor made regular deliveries to Campbell Litus as Lag was growing up, and seems to be popular with the townspeople. He has a hearty appetite and a stocky build, and tires easily. His Dingo is a hound dog named Gus whose skilled at tunneling. His Spirit Amber attack is "Yellow Bomb" and uses pieces of his hunger via landmines.

  • Big, Bulky Bomb: Yellow Bomb can make some pretty big explosions.
  • Big Eater: When he's not fighting, he's often shown chowing down on food, especially a bit of pizza. His attacks use pieces of his hunger.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He can't bring himself to tell Lag that Gauche is no longer a Bee.
  • Eyes Always Shut: His eyes appear to be always closed.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: His Dingo is a hound dog that he almost always carries on his back.

  • Nice Guy: He's a friendly and kind-hearted individual.
  • Quit Your Whining: To Lag, in the wake of Lily's getting her heart eaten, saying that this time, he's not crying for others, but himself.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: A short one. When Reverse takes Sunny's heart, Connor tries his best to get it back.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Despite coming across as laid-back and not particularly bright, he can be rather intelligent.
    • During the race against the Letter Pigeons, he waits until the road workers take a lunch break so he can go past them on the more direct route to the goal. His patience and intelligence allows his team to regain the lead from the Letter Pigeons.
    • In the Honey Waters arc, he notices that the so-called Spirit Amber that Sarah is using is not the genuine article, because it doesn't emit the same sparks that the real thing does when firing a Shindan.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: He uses mines to blow enemies up.
  • Tunnel King: His dingo, Gus, can use
  • Wham Line: Identifying the Gaichuu that ate Zazie's parents' hearts.

    Gus

Connor's dingo, a large dog.

  • Big Friendly Dog: He's a large dog that's docile and friendly.
  • Tunnel King: He's adept at digging holes in the ground, from small holes in which Connor can plant mines to tunnels.

    Zazie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zazie_manga_color.jpg
Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio

A Bee who specializes in killing Gaichuu and actually has very little interest in deliveries. For the record, he IS good at those too. His parents were killed by Gaichuu when he was a child, leading him to become a Bee in order to exact vengeance. He likes cats; in fact his Dingo is a panther named "Wasiolka." His Spirit Amber attack is "Blue Thorn" and shoots pieces of his hate.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Volume 16 is centered on him, as he finds the Gaichuu that stole his parents' hearts
  • Ascended Extra: He gets significantly more screentime in the anime than he does in the parts of the manga that they adapt, and is often a central character in filler episodes.
  • The Big Guy: Out of the three main Bees, he's the least likely to be captured.
  • Catapult Nightmare: After being defeated by Noir, he wakes up from a vision of Noir this way, only to end up inadvertently headbutting Lag.
  • Cute Little Fangs: To go with the cat theme.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: As a young boy, he learned that people can't be trusted upon seeing a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who ran an orphanage.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: His parents were 5 million rin in debt, and knew that he'd be taken as collateral, so they abandoned him outside an orphanage and returned once they paid off the debt.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He gets a tad hot under the collar.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He looks up to Jiggy Pepper, and is rather excited at the chance to fight alongside him against Cabernet.
  • I Can Still Fight!: In Episode 20, despite his broken arm, he returns via Big Damn Heroes to help Lag.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's gruff and brutally honest, but always does what he believes is right and cares for hisf riends.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: He looks after stray cats.
  • Meaningful Name: In-Universe, his name means, "One who lives honestly."
  • Only One Name: For the most part, until his past is revealed.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents had their hearts eaten by a Gaichuu. They also had left him behind for 10 years, and he, as a result of his trust issues, couldn't recognize them as his parents.
  • Parting-Words Regret: The last thing he said to his parents before they got killed by a Gaichuu was that he didn't believe that they were his parents.
  • The Power of Hate: His Shindans are shards of his malice. Subverted during his fight with Jeel, when the Shindan that gets through to Jeel is motivated by the sadness of having to shoot a friend.
  • Revenge: His reason for joining the Letter Bees and the source of his power.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: His Shindanjuu is a sawed-off shotgun. Blue Thorn fires several small projectiles per shot, a bit like a shotgun blast.
  • Wham Line: He tells Lag in passing that Gauche is no longer a Bee, and as such, Lag's the current record-holder on the entry exam.
  • The Worf Effect: He's one of the more skilled fighters among the Letter Bees. As such, when he loses to Noir, it's a good sign of how skilled Noir is.
  • You Killed My Father: He eventually comes into a confrontation with the Gaichuu that ate his parents' hearts.

    Wasiolka

Zazie's dingo, a panther-like cat.

  • Panthera Awesome: A large cat, as well as one of the more effective animal dingoes.

    Jiggy Pepper
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jiggy_manga_color.jpg
Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai

The resident Express Delivery specialist, a young adult Bee who occasionally shows up when the manga decides to be extra cool. Has two adopted siblings, Nelli and Nello, though Nello, the boy, eventually dies of an illness. He left their hometown to become stronger to protect them. He also had a bell tower built there. His Spirit Amber, Sea Blue Ultramarine, is in his motorcycle. His Dingo is a hawk named Harry.

  • The Ace: He has the third best record for the Letter Bee exam, after Lag and Gauche, is a highly respected express delivery Bee, and is one of the few Letter Bees besides Lag who hails from Yodaka. All this shows that he's one of the more respected Letter Bees in the series.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Note that in this case, 'aloof' does not mean 'bad'. He really does love and care for his adoptive sister, he's just sort of understated about it. As in 'to the point that she completely despised him until discovering just how much he's done to take care of her over the years'.
  • Badass Biker: Zazie and Lag certainly think so.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Despite everyone at his town thinking he was just selfish, Jiggy became a Bee because he wanted to be a stronger man for his surrogate younger siblings who looked up to him.
  • Big Brother Mentor: To Lag and Zazie.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Lag from a lighthouse. Really.
  • Cool Bike: It runs on heart!
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: He uses a revolver Shindanjuu in addition to his heart-powered bike.
  • Scars Are Forever: Two on the right side of his face, right near his eye.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He can come off as overly serious and cold, but Jiggy is a very nice person who looks after others.
  • We All Die Someday: In the manga, he tells Cabernet this.
Jiggy: If you've developed a heart, Cabernet, there's something you should learn. Every life ends.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: He scolds Lag for letting himself fall prey to the lighthouse's illusion, which forced Niche and Jiggy to save him.

    Lily Confort
Lag's partner during the Cabernet interception mission. She lacks confidence in her abilities and hates the fact that as a Bee she is often rejected by society. She holds Lag in very high esteem, having heard of his reputation, and admires his dedication, abilities and confidence.

    Chico Nege
A Letter Bee candidate who failed the exam, but passed the retest.
  • Establishing Character Moment: She grabs a letter out of Lag's hand, concludes that it can't be delivered because the sender and addressee are unknown, then tears it to shreds. This establishes her approach to the job, which is completely different from Lag's.
  • The Rival: Declares herself to be Lag's rival for the Head Bee position.

Other Personnel

    Largo Lloyd
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/largo_manga_color.jpg

The Master of the Bee Hive. Seem to have a more invested interest in Lag and his deliveries for reasons unknown.

  • Alliterative Name: Largo Lloyd
  • Benevolent Boss: He's well-respected by his employees. Aria in particular appreciates him, since after her dingo retired, he saw past her clumsiness in the field and noticed that she was better-suited to office work.
  • Body Horror: His internal organs are his mother's who was also used in the experiments and made part tree.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He can be quite frivolous sometimes. Lag's jaw drops when he finds out THIS man is in charge.
  • Busman's Holiday: After he's fire, which he takes with a grain of salt anyway, he continues his investigation into Reverse.
  • The Chessmaster: Often out gathering information... and threatening those who don't give it up.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: He doesn't think much of Lawrence's plan to consume the artificial sun and shroud Amberground in darkness, saying that if it were up to him, he'd take over the entire world instead.
  • Guile Hero: Implied.
  • Mr. Exposition: He IS in charge.
  • Scars Are Forever: Revealed in Chapter 50 to have massive scarring as a result of government experiments.
  • Stoic Spectacles: A smiling example.
  • Ship Tease: With Aria and Elena, before she died.
  • Smoking Is Cool: In the manga, he often has a cigarette butt in his mouth.
  • Team Dad
  • Trickster Mentor: Up until the reveal, he had some elements of this.

    Harry

Jiggy's dingo, a hawk.

    Aria Link
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aria_manga_color.jpg
Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu

The Sub Master of the Bee Hive and Largo's right hand, taking care of the minor things for him. She was see earlier in Gauche's memories as a letter bee and his love interest. Aria's Spirit Amber ability is the Heart Restoration Bullet, which she executes by playing music on her violin. The music has a healing effect on everyone who hears it. The closer one stands to her while she is playing, the stronger the healing effects. Her Spirit Amber attack is "Crimson Melody" and is executed by playing her violin. Her Dingo is Bolt, a large dog which is now old and retired.

  • Elegant Classical Musician: She plays the violin.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Her outfits tend to be like this, especially in the manga. Lag ends up staring at her after she dons her old Letter Bee uniform, which is a little... tight on her, and when she frets about having gained weight, he reassures her that she looks sexy.
  • The Klutz: She's said to be legendarily klutzy, so much so that Dr. Thunderland wishes he could dissect her.
  • Magic Music: Aria's Spirit Amber ability is the Heart Restoration Bullet, which she executes by playing music on her violin. The music has a healing effect on everyone who hears it. The closer one stands to her while she is playing, the stronger the healing effects.
  • Meaningful Name: An "aria" is a type of song for opera.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • Musical Assassin: Her Crimson Melody attack can take out multiple Gaichuus at once.
  • Nerves of Steel: When Hodai Franklin attacks her, hitting her on the head and drawing blood, Aria remains calm and convinces him to accept the letter. Even Niche is impressed.
  • Sexy Secretary: She's rather attractive, and better at administrative work than she is at making deliveries.
  • Ship Tease: With Gauche, of course and sometimes her boss.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She can be cold and professional, but is also very warm-hearted.
  • Team Mom: For all Bees.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: She and Niche have trouble working together when paired up on a delivery. Aria's used to having her retired dingo Bolt around, whereas Niche insists on working with Lag. Their fighting styles are incompatible, so both of them nearly get their hearts devoured by the Gaichuu. In the end, they manage to work together and prevail, resulting in them gaining some respect for one another.

    Bolt

Aria's dingo, a large dog.

  • Big Friendly Dog: A very large dog who's willing to catch Aria when she falls.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: He was rather effective back in his prime, so much that he ended up getting most of the credit for Aria's successes.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: Aria sees the thunderbolt-shaped scar on his head, and decides to name him "Bolt."

    Dr. Thunderland Jr.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thunderland_jr_manga_color.jpg
Voiced by: Hideo Ishikawa

A biologist who belongs to the Third Bioscience advisory panel of Amberground divisions specializing in pathology. He collects corpses for dissection and study, earning him the nickname "The Corpse Doctor." He has a morbid interest in dissection. Not as evil as he looks.

  • Comedic Sociopathy: Thinks dissection is a marvelous thing to talk about while standing over an unconscious body.
  • Eyepatch of Power: His most distinguishing feature is an eye-patch covering his right eye. He seems to have lost his eye on the Day of Flicker.
  • Insistent Terminology: It seems odd when no one calls him "Dr." or "Jr."
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While he does dissect A LOT of things, he uses them to create cures for diseases. Also, for the corpses he finds, he erects little memorials for all of them.
  • Mad Scientist: You get the feeling that he and Stein would get along GREAT.
  • The Mentor: To Mana Jones in Episodes 21-22. He was one of the few who saw potential in her research and her passion for science, so he stood by her, even after she ended up going blind in an accident.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: "Corpse Doctor."
  • Only Friend: To an extent, as he says he's never had a friend, but speaks fondly of how Gauche seemed to understand him.
  • The Professor

    Dr. Thunderland
Voiced by: Shoto Kashii

Thunderland Junior's father, who makes appearances in the bonus sections of the manga volumes to talk about Amberground, and the various people and places Lag finds in his travels

  • All There in the Manual: Provides information that isn't openly discussed in the manga, but also adds quite a bit of his own opinion, especially where his son is concerned.
  • Cool Shades
  • Mr. Exposition: In the extras, he provides background information about the setting.

    Mock Sullivan

A Letter Bee whose approach to his work is starkly different from Lag and Gauche's; he simply believes in getting letters to their destinations and is willing to write off letters as "cold letters" without tracking down the sender or recipient.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Gets Lag's name wrong despite having just been told it.
  • Jerkass: Says in no uncertain terms that he doesn't think much of Lag as a Bee and dislikes his approach to delivering letters.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Refusing Nelli's request to deliver Nello's letter to Jiggy isn't exactly a nice thing to do, but he's right that he's under no obligation to deliver letters if Nelli can't afford postage. By the end of the Kyrie storyline, Nelli decides to work in order to save up for the postage.
  • The Reliable One: He's the only Letter Bee Garrard likes besides Jiggy Pepper, since Garrard doesn't think much of Lag's ambition to become Head Bee, and blames Connor and Zazie for the failure to defeat Cabernet at Veritably Abbey.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: He's an unpleasant individual with a snake dingo.

    Krank
Mock Sullivan's Dingo, a cobra.

    Calibus Garrard
Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue

A government official and former Bee. Lloyd at one point idolized him.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed in his anime debut in Episode 30. He's cynical and abrasive, like in canon, and even shoves a boy aside, but he seems to want to teach Lag about how he sees the world instead of shunting him off to the Cold Letters division. Subverted when he turns out to be a Marauder.
  • Adaptational Villainy: He's a Marauder in the anime.
  • Badass Boast: When he's about to be tested for entering the capital, he tells Canon "You don't think we're qualified? Of course we are!!! We're going to the Capital! The next time you see me, I'll be Head Bee!! Don't you forget it, missy!!" Subverted as it turns out he was Tempting Fate.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When the Cabernet shows up outside Yuusari, he and Hazel head the defense team to fight it off, despite showing no concern to the people's well-beings earlier.
  • Break the Haughty: He was rather full of himself when he applied to be Head Bee, but facing a gatekeeper who was able to see into his Dark and Troubled Past, as well as the Awful Truth behind Amberground, broke him.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's absolutely badass when he fights the Cabernet.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: His attempt to enter the capital.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: What made him fail the test to get inside the capital and end up living in the "middle ground", Kagerou. He went through utter hell in his childhood, with an abusive mother who eventually killed his father. And then what he's seen and done since he's gotten inside Akatsuki.
  • Fake Memories: The one happy memory he has of his childhood is fake.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He allows himself to be swallowed by the Cabernet, so that others will have a chance to kill it before it can destroy Yuusari.
  • Hidden Depths: This very cynical and unpleasant man actually used to have hopes and dreams, just like Lag did. In the manga version of the Cabernet fight, he gets some of his fire back.
  • Jerkass: He's a bitter and cynical man who assigns Lag the duty of delivering cold letters simply for daring to aspire to be Head Bee.
  • Karma Houdini: In the anime. He and Valentine are placed under arrest, but escape in the chaos of the battle with Cabernet, and ultimately disappear to start a new life.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • In his introductory episode in the anime, he shoves a young boy aside just for asking questions.
    • In Episode 42, he abducts Sylvette (actually Lag in disguise) to use as bait to lure Gauche/Noir out, fully intending to kill both of them, since he believes Reverse no longer needs Gauche.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Going to the capital and finding out the truth utterly broke him, but he manages to regain his spirits.
  • Laughing Mad: After Canon suggests that the man-made sun is made of the hearts of those who entered Akatsuki, he breaks down laughing as he says that hope is merely an illusion in Amberground.
  • Motive Rant: In Episode 47, when Lag asks why he betrayed the government to join Reverse despite having been a Letter Bee, Garrard says he realized that all his work simply amounted to delivering hearts to the artificial sun.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Subverted. It wasn't him being an ass when he sacked Lloyd, it was him giving Lloyd a chance to fight the government and expose the capital's secrets.
  • Pick on Someone Your Own Size: Seems to have it out for Largo, Gauche and Lag.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Hazel's Red.
  • Smug Snake: Actually, he's just a Shell-Shocked Veteran.
  • Stoic Spectacles
  • Sunglasses at Night: He constantly wears sunglasses in the dimly lit world of Amberground.
  • Tempting Fate: Despite making a Badass Boast, he learns that the test is beyond anything he could have ever imagined, and it breaks him.
  • To Be a Master: Another person who wants to be Head Bee and has no problem stepping on small stones in his path to being it.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In the anime, he shoves a young boy aside during his introductory episode and later would have murdered Sylvette once she served her role in luring out Gauche.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: In Episode 42, he declares that Reverse no longer needs Noir, and is willing to kill him until he's talked down. The same applies to "Sylvette"/Lag, whom he'd taken hostage, since the hostage would no longer be useful. Two episodes later, he shoots Jeel in the chest with a revolver when Zazie's Shindan manages to get through to him, calling Jeel "Useless trash".

"Being a dingo is my life!! I don't know how to do nothin' but protect!! I'll protect you! And I'll protect my old hometown! What could be simpler than that?"

The Dingo of Calibus Garrard. Would be suffering from Small Name, Big Ego if he wasn't as tough as people say he is. A bit childish.

Amberground Government

Enforces a very strict class separation & bars travel between the 3 districts for all except those given proper clearance.
    Empress of Amberground

  • Family Business: Her family has been in charge of the task of "Empress" - which is to protect the light of the Sun - for generations, and Anne is the newest Empress.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Her true identity is Anne Seeing, Lag's mother who was taken away years ago.
  • Shout-Out: Her statues resemble the Virgin Mary.

    Jick Barrol

Commander of the Imperial Guard and Largo's father.

Reverse

A revolutionary group trying to cause a "Reverse" in Amberground. May not or may not be much better than the government they're trying to topple over.
    Lawrence
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lawrence_tegami_bachi.jpg
Voiced by: Koji Yusa

The leader of Reverse.

  • Adaptational Villainy: His anime version is far more maniacal and callous than his manga version, especially in his decision to sacrifice those who could not become spirit to power up Cabernet.
  • Big Bad: As head of a revolutionary movement that does less than noble things to advance his cause, he's the main antagonist for much of the series.
  • Blasting It Out of Their Hands: In the anime, he uses his gun to shoot Lag's Nocturne #20 out of his hands. Luckily, Lag still has Gauche's Gymnopiede.
  • Break Them by Talking: He does this to Lag in Episode 43, saying that Lag's inability to fire a Shindan is because he doubts whether he should see Gauche as his enemy, that he's gradually realizing why Reverse is fighting the government, and he's no longer sure whether the government is worth fighting for.
  • Death by Adaptation: In the anime, he lets his heart be absorbed by Cabernet in order to empower it enough to consume the artificial sun.
  • Face Framed in Shadow
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has a few diagonal scars crossing his face, which makes him seem even more sinister.
  • Never Bareheaded: He wears a top hat in all his appearances.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: Despite ostensibly wanting to overthrow the government for the good of the people, he's willing to do some awful things, such as stealing letters, sacrificing his followers and unleashing a massive Gaichuu.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He suffers one in Episode 49, visibly losing composure after realizing that Lloyd Out-Gambitted him and thwarted his plan to feed those unable to become spirit to the Cabernet.

    Noir
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/noir_manga_color.jpg
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama

A Marauder for Reverse who steals letters from Bees.

  • The Atoner: He eventually decides to atone for sacrificing so many hearts for Reverse's mission.
  • Becoming the Mask: Despite having pretended to be Gauche for a little while after being shot with Lag's letter bullet, Noir becomes a bit more like Gauche over time.
  • Blunt "Yes": In Episode 42, Lag asks whether shooting Noir with a letter bullet full of all of Lag's memories of him in order to bring Gauche back was All for Nothing. Gauche says yes.
  • Evil Counterpart: As a Marauder, he's one to the Bees, being someone who steals letters.
  • Hand Cannon: He wields Gymnopiede, a revolver-type Shindan.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After being shot by Lag's bullet, he gains some of his old memories, and gradually shifts from being an enemy to being Lag's ally. In the end, Lag says that both Gauche and Noir are his friends.
  • If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: In Episode 42, he offers to kill Lag as a show of his loyalty to Reverse.
  • Jerkass: He's cold and dismissive of Lag when they first meet. Essentially, he has all of Gauche's dedication to his job- in this case, for a criminal anti-government group- and has none the bonds that brought out Gauche's kinder side(with the possible exception of Roda).
  • Meaningful Name: His name means "Black" in French, likely a reference to his black clothes and Spirit Amber.
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: He wields a revolver-type Shindan. It's unclear whether the cylinder is necessary, since the gun doesn't fire actual bullets.
  • The Stoic: He's even less emotional than Gauche, and almost never loses his cool.
    • Not So Stoic: In the anime, he loses his cool when confronting Lawrence over his plans for "those who could not become spirit".
  • Third-Person Person: Occasionally delves into this to keep his personas as Noir and as Gauche separate.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: Noir is actually the missing Letter Bee Gauche Suede. Or more specifically, Noir is what the shell of Gauche's body became after he completely lost his heart.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He's a prominent and cold-hearted antagonist with white hair.

    The Girl in White
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roda_manga_color.jpg
Voiced by: Yui Horie

Noir's Dingo.

  • Blade Run: During her first fight with Niche, she manages to land on one of Niche's hair blades.
  • Breaking Speech: She gives one to Niche, leading to her 10-Minute Retirement.
  • Covered with Scars: When Lag accidentally sees her bathing, he discovers that her body is riddled with scars.
  • Dark Action Girl: She's a cold and ruthless individual, as well as one of the few people able to defeat Niche in a fight.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Niche, since she's Noir's dingo.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: She's correct about how Niche drinking the honey water was a foolish move that prevented her from helping Lag. Niche understands, which is why she temporarily quits being Lag's dingo.
  • Light Is Not Good: Her clothes and hair are white, but she's on the antagonistic side.
  • Person with the Clothing: Referred to as the 'Girl in White'.
  • Pet the Dog: In the anime finale, she saves Sylvette, and tells Niche she's come to consider her a worthy dingo.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She calls Niche a failure of a Dingo because she made herself sick by drinking poisoned water and that's why she wasn't able to help Lag when he needed her. Her speech and losing to her are enough to make Niche try to quit being a Dingo.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: She wears a purple scarf around the neck.
  • The Stoic
  • Take My Hand!: Refuses Lag's, despite being somewhat touched he offered.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She has white hair and works for the main antagonist organization.
  • Worf Had the Flu: In Episode 41, she gets a rematch with Niche, but ends up losing to her. Part of the reason is that Niche Took a Level in Badass, and part of the reason is because Roda is distracted by thoughts about Noir's current situation.

    Jeel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zeal_tegami_bachi.jpg
Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai

An agent of Reverse who fought Zazie.

  • Anti-Villain: A cross between a Noble and Well-Intentioned villain. He works for Reverse, but in order to protect those who could not become spirit. In the anime, he ends up being more heroic than Zazie when he saves a child's life while Zazie is too distracted by a Gaichuu.
  • Beast Man: A cross between a man and a wolf
  • Body Horror: He was also subject to many of the same experiments as Zazie.
  • Death by Adaptation: In the anime, Lawrence shoots him in the chest, seemingly killing him.
  • No-Sell: Because of the hatred in his heart, Zazie's bullets of malice don't affect him. Instead, a shindan composed of sorrow is what gets through to him.
  • The Power of Hate: He's motivated by this, just like Zazie is, and says that his hatred is even stronger than Zazie's. Despite this, Zazie believes that Jeel truly wants to protect other victims of experimentation, so hatred isn't what's driving him.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: He calls Zazie out on abandoning a kid hanging from a cliff to destroy a Gaichuu, since the kid ed up falling before Zazie can reach him, resulting in Zeal saving him instead.

    Mie

    Sunny
Voiced by: Masayo Kurata

A young nun at the Veritably Abbey in Lamento Town. She is a good baker, and has a crush on Connor.

    Signal and Signales

Two guards who are stationed on either end of the Bifrost bridge. They're agents of Reverse who'd lost their sight on the day of the Flicker.

  • Angsty Surviving Twin: Triplet example. They're both bitter over their brother's death when the airship crashed as a result of the Flicker, which cost both of them their sight.
  • Everyone Has Standards: They hate the government, but refuse to sacrifice people to bring down the artificial sun.
  • "Get Out of Jail Free" Card: The government overlooks their participation in Reverse because they helped Largo carry out his plan to thwart Reverse's scheme.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: One has bandages over his left eye and one has bandages over his right.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: They're bitter over losing their sight and their brother on the day of the Flicker, and blame the government. The government gave them a job watching the Bifrost crossing, but also locks them up at their posts. Subverted when they ultimately help betray Reverse.
  • Twin Telepathy: Their hearts are connected, which allows them to communicate with each other.

The Suede Family

    Gauche Suede
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gauche_manga_color.jpg
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama

Lag's mentor and hero, who delivered him to his aunt in Chapter 1. He's a lively and pleasant young man, something remarked upon by those who've met him. He likes weird soup. It's revealed he has no memories of his mother, as a result of the Day Of Flicker. Aria believes he focuses all of his attention on his sister as a result. His Spirit Amber attack is "Black Needle" and his Dingo is a white dog named Roda.

  • The Ace: Gauche holds the record for the best time on the Letter Bee exam and is considered a promising Bee. Quite a few people are disappointed when he apparently gave it all up after earning the rare privilege of entering the capital.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • He wants to become the Head Bee so that he can make life easier for his younger sister.
    • During their journey to Campbell Litus, Gauche claims he's only protecting Lag because it's his job to deliver him safely to his aunt. It doesn't take long before Gauche grows attached and starts caring for Lag as if he was a little brother.
  • Big Brother Mentor: He teaches Lag all what being a Letter Bee is about and inspires the boy to pursue the profession while caring for him as a friend and older brother figure.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Chapter 42.
  • Chekhov M.I.A.: At the start of the series, part of why Lag wants to be a Letter Bee is to meet Gauche again, but he soon discovers Gauche went missing some time ago. Lag swears he will find Gauche and bring him back to his little sister. As to be expected, Gauche eventually appears again, but he's now not the same person anymore because he's a member of Reverse going by the name Noir.
  • Consummate Professional: At the start of the series, he takes on the job of delivering Lag as a human package without asking too many questions about it, and initially refuses to try to get to know Lag out of a belief that he doesn't need to know anything about the mail. When he wakes up in Sabrina Mary's house, he immediately asks her to stamp the receipt for Lag.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Lag, as a result of their travels to Cambel. Part of it involves learning of each other's pasts, and part of it involves fighting together against a Gaichuu.
  • Hand Cannon: His Shindanjuu, like most others, is in the form of a pistol.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: His Dingo is a white dog.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Whatever happened during the blackout of the Day of the Flicker, it caused Gauche to forget everything about his mother. Aria thinks something caused Gauche to lose part of his heart that day.
  • Promotion to Parent: With both of their parents gone, Gauche became his younger sister's only caretaker.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted initially.
  • The Stoic: He's rather unemotional most of the time, in stark contrast to Lag.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He can come off as cold and overly focused on the job to those who don't know him well, but shows a softer side to his friends and family.
  • To Be a Master: Like Lag, he also wants to be Head Bee.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He loves "The Three Brothers' Soup" that tastes disgusting to everyone but him and his sister.

    Sylvette Suede
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sylvette_manga_color.jpg
Voiced by: Nana Mizuki

Gauche's younger, handicapped sister. Like Lag, she was also born of the Day of Flicker. After Gauche leaves for Akatsuki, he disappears, leaving her to assume he's dead. Some years later she encounter Lag, who promises to find her brother. She covers the rent and expenses on her house by making and selling dolls and renting a room to Lag and Niche.

  • Apron Matron: Twenty years early, even.
  • Badass Normal: A Handicapped Badass Normal!
  • Dead Guy Junior: Gauche named her Sylvette after her mother, who died giving birth to her.
  • Handicapped Badass: The "Wheelchair Leopardess" can catch up to and take on RHINO-DRAWN CARRIAGES. And WIN.
  • My Girl Back Home: She provides Lag and Niche with a home to return to. Whenever they go out to a delivery, Sylvette stays waiting they come back safe and sound.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: To Niche again, though mainly she wishes Niche would wear more girly pants. Also, Sylvette has to remind Niche to brush her teeth.
  • Plucky Girl
  • Self-Made Woman: While lonely, she manages to do just fine without her brother and before Lag comes along. Also, her dolls are pretty popular.
  • Team Mom: Despite her young age, she acts the part of a mother in her interactions with her tenants Lag and Niche. It's often easy to forget she's only twelve like Lag because she almost always behaves like the adult in the house.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Like Gauche, she also likes weird soup.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: It takes a while before Niche warms up to Sylvette.
  • Weapon for Intimidation: She still has Gauche's shindanjuu, which no longer has the spirit amber in it and can't fire shindans. She uses it as a "bluff" to scare off people like debt collectors.
  • Wise Beyond Her Years: She's only 12, the same age as Lag, but Sylvette is very mature and independent due to her older brother's disappearance having forced her to grow up fast and make a living for herself.

Lag's Relatives

    Sabrina Mary
Voiced by: Ikuko Tani

Lag's aunt who lives in Campbell Litus. Gauche delivers Lag to her in the first chapter. Lag stays with her for five years before leaving to become a Bee himself.

  • Apron Matron
  • Cool Old Lady: She's a good deal older than Anne Seeing, but is a caring woman
  • Two First Names: Her surname Mary is a very common given name for women.
  • Tsundere: Yells at Gauche for not thanking Lag for dragging his ass into town but gives him food and water for the return trip back to Yuusari. Despite this, she's actually grateful to Gauche, and later asks Lag to apologize to him on her behalf.

    Anne Seeing
Voiced by: Aya Hisakawa

Lag's mother. She was taken to Akatsuki at the beginning of the story and no one has seen her since. She is the one who implanted the Spirit Amber in Lag's eye.

  • Express Delivery: She was spontaneously impregnated with Lag on the Day of Flicker and gave birth to him on the same day.
  • Missing Mom: She was taken away by the government at the start of the series, and one of the reasons Lag wants to become Head Bee is so that he can go to the capital to find her.

Kyrie

A Dying Town on the Yodaka side of the Bifrost crossing to Yuusari. It's Jiggy Pepper's home town.

    Nelli

Jiggy's surrogate younger sister and Nello's older sister.

  • Cool Big Sis: She's a kind and loving older sister to her ill brother Nello. She's rather upset that Nello had promised to protect her, because she had wanted to protect him.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Her brother's untimely death, and Jiggy leaving town, caused her to become bitter toward Jiggy and determined to deliver Nello's letter at any cost.
  • Didn't Think This Through: She shows a remarkable lack of foresight when she assumes that she'll only need Lag's crossing pass to get through.
  • Easily Forgiven: Lag doesn't hold a grudge against her for trying to steal his crossing pass, and even helps her understand that Jiggy didn't abandon her. Averted with Niche, who refuses to forgive her and even threatens to kill Nelli.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: With her baggy and boyish clothing and a hat over her short hair, she easily passes as a boy. It helps with her plan to impersonate Lag.

    Nello

Jiggy and Nelli's younger brother, who died of an unknown illness some time before Lag reached Kyrie.

  • Declaration of Protection: He promised to protect his sister Nelli, despite her being older and in better health than him.
  • Poor Communication Kills: He sobs that he's "so angry" about something related to Jiggy, which Nelli assumes is about Jiggy's departure. In reality, it's because he couldn't keep his promise.
  • Posthumous Character: He died some time of an unnamed illness before the start of the story.

Honey Waters

A town with strong anti-government leanings, which has been off-limits to Letter Bees for years. It's named for the poisonous golden waters.

    Hunt and Sarah

The de facto spiritual leaders of the town.

  • The Bus Came Back: They return late in the anime and start new jobs. Hunt works as Dr. Thunderland Jr.'s assistant, while Sarah runs a talent agency.
  • Genius Bruiser: Hunt is a large and muscular man with two powerful beast arms who knows how to treat honey water poisoning and later becomes an assistant working under Dr. Thunderland.
  • Gentle Giant: Hunt is a rather large man, especially in the present day, and has a good heart.
  • Heel Realization: After seeing the memories contained in Lag's bullet, they realize that their lies caused Ann's father to die.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sarah can be somewhat abrasive, and came up with a scheme that indirectly caused a man's death, but she did it all for Hunt and has enough of a conscience to eventually realize that she was wrong.
  • Nice Guy: Hunt is a decent person at heart who cares for Sarah and repeatedly insists that she stop lying. He also helps Lag escape, gives Niche medicine for her Honey Water poisoning and apologizes to Ann for her father's death.
  • Work Off the Debt: Both Hunt and Sarah were in a freakshow as a means of paying off their debts.

    Ann
A 14-year-old girl Lag meets while in town.
  • The Cynic: She's deeply bitter and cynical, not only refusing to believe in Hunt and Sarah but also having little faith in the Letter Bees. She even tries to burn the letters after Cidre returns, before Lag stops her.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father tried to deliver the letters after the Bees stopped coming, but lost his heart to a Gaichuu and died.

Blue Notes Blues

    Spoiler Character
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/niche_sister.jpg
Voiced by: Mami Koyama

Niche's older twin sister who was separated from her when they were babies. Unlike Niche, she managed to grow up and find her way back to Maka. Also unlike Niche, she knows just how and why she came into the world.

  • Arc Villainess: She's the antagonist of the Blue Notes Blues Arc.
  • BFS: She can transform her hair into a gigantic sword.
  • Big Sister Mentor: She teaches Niche some new tricks.
  • Broken Bird: She's not a bad person, but cynical and broken by 200 years of loneliness and separation from her sister.
  • Cute Little Fangs
  • Cute Monster Girl: Like Niche, she looks like a human woman with Cute Little Fangs and large, bear-like claws that almost reach her feet. Although, Niche's sister is sexy instead of cute.
  • Dark Action Girl: When initially introduced, she's a cold and even cruel individual who easily defeats Niche.
  • Forehead of Doom: Like Niche, she has a prominent forehead.
  • Godiva Hair: Since she's always naked, her Prehensile Hair is the only thing covering her naughty bits, often wearing it as a bikini.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Like Niche, it doesn't seem like she ever learned the importance of wearing clothes.
  • Long-Range Fighter: She can make some impressively intricate things with her hair and rarely has to change her stance while fighting.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a voluptuous woman who never wears any clothes and only uses her Prehensile Hair to make herself a bikini that still leaves little to the imagination.
  • Naked on Arrival: From her first appearance, she never wears any clothes with only her hair covering what must be covered.
  • Never Given a Name: She doesn't have a name. Lag merely calls her "Onee-san," a word for an older sister, presumably because she's Niche's sister.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: She transformed from an infant into the appearance of a young woman after she was separated from her sister and it dawned on her that she is effectively alone in the world.
  • Prehensile Hair: As another Child of Maka, her golden hair is a powerful weapon that she can move and transform at will.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She looks like a young woman in her late teens or early twenties, but she's around 200 years old.
  • Separated at Birth: She and Niche were separated in their infancy when the villagers of Blue Notes Blues threw them into a river.
  • Stripperiffic: Just so she doesn't go Full-Frontal Assault, she wraps her Prehensile Hair around her body as if it was a bikini.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: When she stops being aloof and hostile, she's quite nice.
  • Tragic Bigot: She hates humans because the villagers of Blue Notes Blues tossed her and her sister over a cliff when they were just babies, making them responsible for the twins being separated.
  • Verbal Tic: When she gets upset, she trips over her words.
"Let's cuh. Cut. Cut you open and see what's inside."
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Lag shoots her with a Shindan and shares his memories of Niche, Niche's sister loses her composure over how Niche became friends with a human. It takes a Shindan at point-blank range to get her to give up the fight.
  • Wild Child

    Maka
The resident God of Blue Notes Blues. People make sacrifices to her and while she does protect the land, she does it for no one's sake but her own.
  • Dragons Are Divine: Maka is a very powerful dragon-like creature that is treated as a Physical God within the setting.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: She looks like a cross between an eagle and a dragon, covered in golden fur and about 100 meters in height.
  • Pet the Dog: She helps Celica live long enough to have her daughters and raises the oldest when she makes her way back to her.
    • Also, she genuinely does protect the land.
    • She takes Niche and Steak to a healing lake.

    Celica *SPOILERS*
Voiced by: Kana Ueda

The mother of Niche and her sister.

  • Death by Childbirth
  • Human Sacrifice: Because she had no living relatives in town, she was chosen to become the next sacrifice to Maka in order to warm up the fields to grow crops because the tempature went down due to the Spirit Amber Mining in the area by the Amberground Government. After hearing her pleas, Maka allowed her to live until she gave birth.
  • Missing Mom: Her twin daughters never knew her because she died when they were babies.
  • Not Afraid to Die: She was perfectly fine with Maka eating her (she doesn't) so long as she saved her daughters' lives.
  • Posthumous Character: She died about 200 years before the start of the main story.

Gaichuu

A species of giant armored insects that feed on heart.

    Gaichuu in general

    Cabernet

A giant dragonfly-like Gaichuu that Noir awakened and sent after the sun.

  • Climax Boss: It's built up as a major antagonist, and requires nearly all the protagonists' efforts to defeat.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Despite being a significant opponent, the story continues for some time after its defeat. However, it's the Final Boss for the anime adaptation.
  • Dreadful Dragonfly: It's one of the most dangerous Gaichuu, and takes the form of a dragonfly.
  • Final Boss: The last enemy Lag defeats in the anime adaptation.
  • Flight: It's one of the few Gaichuu that can fly.
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • In the anime, it shifts into a form that has no gaps in its armor after its first few fights with the protagonists. After absorbing Lawrence, it regains its wings for the final battle.
    • In the manga, it gradually evolves, gaining tentacles and even transforming into a human-like form.
  • Removed Achilles' Heel: In the anime, after transforming for the first time, it gets a layer of armor that covers all of its gaps. Niche and her sister are forced to break a hole in its armor to render it vulnerable.

    Laphroiag

The Gaichuu that devoured Zazie's parents' hearts, killing them.

  • Scary Scorpions: It's first introduced as a scorpion-like imprint.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Despite being a mere ordinary Gaichuu, and only appearing in a single story arc in the manga, it had a great impact on Zazie by killing his parents.

    Spiritus *SPOILERS*
The Gaichuu that resides inside the sun.

  • Eldritch Abomination: A truly horrific being that goes far beyond a simple insect monster.
  • Final Boss: The final Gaichuu encountered in the series.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's impossible to talk about without revealing one of the key secrets about the world- the sun itself is a Gaichuu.
