Diamond

The Empathizer

“The ‘time’ that me, Pearl, and Lady spent, and the ‘space’ that we travelled all over, are the most important ‘time’ and ‘space’ to me. Not just for me… The people and Pokémon who treasure this ‘time’ and ‘space’ have come here for that. You have no right to take away something that important for your own selfish reason!!”

The first hero of the DP arc. His name is usually shortened to Dia. He's the fool in the comedy duo. He's always shown to be always eating and sleepy. But despite his foolish looking face, he is also quite sensitive to his surroundings and can detect the smallest things in a situation. First Pokémon is a Munchlax named Lax and starter is a Turtwig named 'Tru'.

Diamond's Pokémon

Lax (Bē)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lax.png
A Munchlax that is Dia's first Pokémon.

Tru/Wig (Rū)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tru_torterra.png
A Pokémon that was supposed to go to Platinum's bodyguards but ended up with Dia.

  • Big Eater: Not quite as big as Munchlax (though what is?).
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Ground is his secondary type as a Torterra.
  • Flechette Storm: Using standard Razor Leaf.
    • Friendly Sniper: Using "Mach-One-And-Only" Razor Leaf, unleashing one powerful and incredibly fast leaf instead of a storm. This is about the only time Razor Leaf is used this way.
  • Green Thumb: Is Grass-type as a Turtwig and a Grotle and it's his primary type as a Torterra.
  • Mighty Glacier: Like most of Diamond's Pokémon, he is slow but powerful and durable.
  • Quality over Quantity: Can either blast out a bunch of Razor Leaves with poor accuracy and speed, or a single one that's lightning quick and accurate.

Don (Pū)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20181216030519diamond_don.png
A Bastiodon that Dia got as a Shieldon from Byron. He evolved during the infiltration of Team Galactic's base.

Kit/Tung (Rī)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kit_lickilicky.png
A Lickilicky that Dia encountered as a Lickitung. He attacked the president of the Pokétch company for teasing him and evolved when Dia battled him to protect the man.

Moo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diamond_moo.png
A Mamoswine that Platinum caught and later gave to Dia.

Reg (Gī)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diamond_reg.png
A Regigias that Platinum encountered after her defeat at the hands of Jupiter. It saved her, Candice, and Maylene and snuck into her Poké Ball so it can come and help them later during the final battle against Cyrus. Due to orders it was given in the past, it refuses to leave its Poké Ball unless it's necessary.

  • Big Damn Heroes: According to Dr. Footstep, its job is to do this and refuses to leave its Poké Ball unless it's really, truly needed.
  • Golem: The leader of the trio.
  • Non-Elemental: It's Normal-type.
  • Olympus Mons: One of the few legendaries to be on a Dex holder's regular rotation.
  • Super-Strength: Strong enough to go toe to toe against Dialga and Palkia. It's species were said to tow entire continents in the past.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: It seems to take its leave once Dia's taken out by Giratina. Subverted as the next chapter reveals that it went to fetch Rotom's appliances.

Rotom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rotom_adventures.png
A Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum encountered in the Old Chateau. It tricked and teased them by going into various appliances, but they eventually found it and trapped it in a television. Later, Dia and Pearl returned to the Old Chateau to protect Rotom from Charon and befriended it. After Charon was defeated, it joined Dia.

    Pearl

Pearl

The Determiner

"To me, everything begins with one's willpower!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pearl_9.png
The second hero of the DP arc. He's the straight man of the comedy duo and is very loud and shouts quite a lot. He's somewhat The Leader of the team. First Pokémon is a Chatot named Chatler and starter is a Chimchar named Chimler. His father is the leader of the Battle Frontier, and thus he has a great wealth of battling and training knowledge, which he often shares with Platinum Berlitz.
  • Androcles' Lion: Helping that wild Luxray had its perks.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: He can tell what attack a Pokémon is going to use just by looking at their movements.
  • Balance, Speed, Strength Trio: Pearl is the speed of his group and his team tends to have Pokémon with high Agility stats.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Pearl's the tsukkomi.
  • Butt-Monkey: Despite his treatment of Dia, Pearl isn't immune from this early in the arc, like when he offers a Buneary a berry in Hearthome City only to get hit by its ear or getting doorslammed by Solaceon News Press.
  • Bystander Syndrome: He at first doesn't want to have anything to do with Team Galactic because he believes that his and Dia's only priority is to protect Platinum. He changes his views as the arc goes on.
  • Catchphrase: Shared with Dia for their routine, "When you think of Pokémon!"
  • Childhood Friends: With Diamond.
  • Decoy Protagonist: No, he's not as important to the plot as Diamond or Platinum. But early chapters would have you believe otherwise.
  • Determinator: Well he is very closely related to Azelf, the Pokémon of willpower. His very title is even "The Determiner".
  • Expy: To Sun Wukong, as he's the hotheaded companion. It also helps that he obtains an Infernape early in the story.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The thief, with team of Fragile Speedster Pokémon that are swift, strong but frail.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: With the rest of the Sinnoh trio, he specializes in both Personalities and Legendary Pokémon, particularly Azelf.
  • Gender-Blender Name: "Pearl" is usually a girl's name.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Him and Diamond.
  • Heroic BSoD: Goes into one after failing to protect Azelf from Team Galactic. He snaps out of it quickly, though.
  • Hot-Blooded: Possibly moreso than Gold as he shouts almost every chapter.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: His treatment of Dia (before he calls him out on it) occasionally tiptoes from the well-meaning to abusive and he had been very put off by Platinum's behavior at first, but he cares deeply for the both of them. By the end of the DP arc he also seems to have dropped the jerk part completely.
  • Keet: It's downplayed in comparison to Barry. This does not mean much.
  • Lady and Knight: The Knight to Platinum's Lady.
  • The Leader: Type III. While Platinum is the face of the Sinnoh trio, he's the one who actually takes charge.
  • The McCoy: Until he turns into a Kirk by the end of the DP arc.
  • Mistaken for Special Guest: He and Dia are assumed to be bodyguards because of the color scarves they wear.
  • No Indoor Voice: Goodness gracious no.
  • No Time to Think: A wild Stunky stink-bombs Platinum unconscious after multiple bike-riding failures agitate it, and she starts rolling straight downhill. Pearl saves her ass from a messy trip off Cycling Road by utilizing Prinplup and Chimler's abilities through pure intrinsic knowledge and reflexive thought.
  • Only Sane Man: He has his faults, but compared to Dia or Platinum, he's certainly the most level-headed among the three of them and often has to keep the other two in line.
  • Pungeon Master: Being a Straight Man who helps come up with their jokes, this is a necessity.
  • Ship Tease: With Platinum, especially in the early chapters.
  • Significant Name: His birthday is on the 6th of June, in which the birthstone is pearl.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: He's very literally referred to as the Straight Man.
  • Theme Naming: All of his Pokémon have "ler" in their names.
  • Trying Not to Cry: All 3 Sinnoh dex holders cry the first day they are separated from each other, but only Pearl wipes away tears and puts a determined look on his face.
  • Tsundere: Is this to Platinum and Dia, but especially heavy on the tsun to Dia, as shown here.
    • Also here - Pearl has Chatler memorize Lady's location, and Diamond comes to the conclusion that Pearl did it in case something dangerous happened to her. Pearl quickly denies it and insists that he just wanted inspiration for their next comedy act, complete with a nervous stutter.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Orange.
  • Unstoppable Rage: He unleashes his entire team (and Rotom) out at Charon when he thinks that Dia is killed.
  • Verbal Tic: When he's being especially serious, he calls Diamond by his real name instead of Dia. "Dia- No, Diamond..."
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Dia calmly calls him out for not listening to his opinions and generally treating him like his underling. He realizes his mistakes, however, and the two quickly patch up after their battle with Cyrus.
  • With a Friend and a Stranger: With Dia being the friend and Platinum being the stranger.
  • Wrong Assumption: Early in their journey, he mistakes Platinum for being their guide after seeing how knowledgeable she is of various locales.

Pearl's Pokémon

Chatler/Chahiko (Perahiko)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chatler.png
Pearl's first Pokémon that he uses in his and Dia's Manzai skits. Tends to repeat everything says.

Chimler/Chimhiko (Saruhiko)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chimler.png
A Pokémon that was supposed to go to Platinum's bodyguards but ended up with Pearl.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Fighting is his secondary type as a Monferno and Infernape.
  • Flaming Hair: Flame-shaped prior to its final evolution, and just plain flames as Infernape.
  • Playing with Fire: Is Fire-type as a Chimchar and it's his primary type as a Monferno and Infernal.

Rayler/Rayhiko (Torahiko)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rayler.png
A Luxray that once had his claws broken as a Luxio and was ostracized from his pride. After Pearl helped him connect with him pride again, Rayler eventually evolved and became the leader. Later, he joined Pearl's team to help him face off against Team Galactic.

Zeller/Zelhiko (Zeruhiko)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zeller.png
A Buizel that was caught in the explosion of one of Team Galactic's bombs and gained a distrust of humans in the process. Pearl captured him while training but the Pokémon doesn't want to listen to him.

Digler/Dighiko

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/digler.png
A Diglett that Pearl caught while training to battle Team Galactic.

Tauler/Tauhiko (Taurohiko)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tauler.png
A Tauros that Pearl caught while training to battle Team Galactic.

    Platinum

Platinum Berlitz

The Understander

"...It's an interesting world out there. I've learned many things I wouldn't otherwise have if I'd stayed cooped up at home!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/platinum.png
The third hero of the DP arc and the heroine of the Platinum arc. She is the princess of the group and is supposedly on a journey to Mt Coronet to honor a family tradition. She acts very snobbish at first but is later revealed to be also sheltered and curious. First Pokémon is a Ponyta and her starter is a Piplup. She's lightened up quite a bit in the Platinum arc.
  • The Ace: She develops into this throughout her Sinnoh journey. By the time she visits the eight gym she is able to win the badge without Dia and Pearl's help.
  • Bad Liar: An odd case. Whenever she lies, it's.. not very convincing, but unlike other examples she can do it with an extreme straight face. This is actually a Running Gag in the early chapters of the Diamond and Pearl arc, where Pearl catches her acting out actions she's interested in, and plainly denies doing so when he confronts her about it.
  • Balance, Speed, Strength Trio: Platinum is the balance of the trio who befitting of her knowledgeable mind, has Pokémon in her team for almost any situation and can utilize rental Pokémon just as well as her trained Pokémon.
  • Birds of a Feather: She gets along well with Mr. Backlot, where Pearl remarks that it must be from their rich status.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Many of the new experiences she picks up on her journey end up helping her out in her Gym Battles.
    • Chekhov's Boomerang: And one of her learned skills (mastering roulette) was used again in the Platinum arc.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Like Sapphire, she took up the Gym quest instead of their male counterpart. However, while Sapphire is a Hot-Blooded Wild Child (with a mostly male team), Platinum is an aloof Ice Queen (with a mostly female team)-interestingly reflecting their starters and home regions very well. Also, while Sapphire receives less development than Ruby in RS arc, it's Platinum who changes the most among the Sinnoh Trio in the DP arc.
    • She can be also seen as one to Ruby. Both of them have affluent families, has a water starter with an almost female team, and is the Superego of their respective trios with Tsurime Eyes to boot. However, Ruby's love for Contests doesn't exactly match what Norman had in mind, while Platinum aspires to follow her father's footsteps in becoming Rowan's assistant.
  • Damsel in Distress: She often got into danger in the early chapters of the DP arc, necessitating her "bodyguards" Dia and Pearl to come rescue her. This completely disappears once she took up battling and became an Action Girl.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Plot-wise, she's the most important among the Sinnoh trio, but by the end of the Diamond and Pearl arc it's clear that the trio are the real heroes of the story.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: To Dia and Pearl. She acts all snobby at first and considers the two as just mere hired commoner guards but later warms up to them.
  • Determinator: During her first Super Contest.
  • Expy: To Xuanzang/Tripitaka, where hers is the most clear among the trio. She's a scholar who goes on a pilgrimage while accompanied by bodyguards, where she would be in distress few times early in the arc. Her Ponyta/Rapidash would then represent Yu Lung. (Tripitaka is frequently played by a woman in live action adaptations) Also to Selphy in FireRed and LeafGreen. Both are very rich ladies with an old butler named Sebastian.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The mage, due to having a balanced team between her friends and having a great analytical mind.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: With the rest of the Sinnoh trio, she specializes in both Personalities and Legendary Pokémon, particularly Uxie.
  • Lady and Knight: The Lady to Dia and Pearl's Knights.
  • Lady of War: Is technically one due to her personality and prowess in battle.
  • The Leader: Type IV of the Sinnoh leaders, though it's sometimes shared with Pearl.
  • Magic Skirt: Not a single panty shot. Jeez, she's 12 years old, that really doesn't need to be said.
  • Nice to the Waiter: It takes time for her to act like this to Dia and Pearl, but once the truth got found out they eventually do become her True Companions.
  • No Name Given: Her real name isn't revealed in the manga until the release of Pokémon Platinum.
  • Not So Stoic: Early on she would always try to keep her elegant and dignified image at all times, but she would occasionally slip, such as when she would laugh at Dia's jokes or visibly daydream. Pearl would never miss such moments.
  • Oblivious to Love: Is completely clueless regarding Diamond's obvious crush on her.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Before the Platinum Version game was released, she didn't want to give her real name to commoners. Her nickname may be "Ojou-sama", "Missy", or "Lady" depending on the version you're reading.
  • Ojou: Rich, elegant, formal, and dignified (except when she isn't).
  • Protectorate: She's becomes this to Dia and Pearl. Justified, since both are her bodyguards.
  • Rich Bitch: A little bit at first.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: As she is rich enough to (relatively) do whatever she wants, she has a little trouble in the Battle Castle, where only Castle Points may be spent, as this is the first time she has a limited budget to achieve her ends. She ends up spending barely any of it, but she manages to win by cashing all of it in for info on her opponent.
  • Serious Business: She treats the game corner roulette like this, where it allows her to win against Maylene and advance through the Battle Arcade.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: The crux of her character. She has a lot of knowledge, but not much experience of the outside world. Her time with the boys slowly waves this away.
  • Ship Tease: With both Dia and Pearl.
  • The Smart Girl: Platinum says she reads ten books per day and she is very much associated with the Pokémon of Knowledge, Uxie.
  • The Spock
  • The Stoic
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Averted. You do have to wonder how in the world a blonde mother and a brunette father had a bluenette child.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Although by the end of the DP arc she's mostly just Sugar.
  • Taught by Experience: How she mainly wins her Gym battles.
  • Tsurime Eyes: To reflect her cold demeanor.
  • Unstoppable Rage: When she believes that Byron kidnapped and imprisoned her father, she is furious.
  • With a Friend and a Stranger: The stranger to Dia and Pearl's friend.

Platinum's Pokémon

Rapidash

Platinum's first Pokémon and her mode of transportation. Started out as a Ponyta but later evolved.

Empoleon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/platinum_empoleon.png
The Pokémon that Platinum chose for herself while starting her journey. Started out as a Piplup and later evolved into a Prinplup and Empoleon.

  • An Ice Person: Knows Blizzard and Ice Beam.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Its prideful nature resembled Platinum in the beginning of the arc, as noted by Pearl.
  • Pride: As a Piplup, she was very prideful. It died down a bit once she evolved.

Lopunny

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/platinum_lopunny.png
A Pokémon that Platinum caught while on her way to Snowpoint City.

  • Heroic Sacrifice: Knows Healing Wish which she used to fully heal Platnium's Rapidash who promptly knocked out Candice's Frosslass, to her complete shock.
  • Non-Elemental: She's Normal-type.
  • Righteous Rabbit: A rabbit-like fighter.

Froslass

A Pokémon that once belonged to Gardenia. She was given Cherrim during the battle on Spear Pillar.

Allies

     Sinnoh

Professor Rowan

The resident professor of Sinnoh.

Sir Berlitz

Rowan's assistant and Platinum's father, he is the richest man in Sinnoh.
  • Distressed Dude: He and Professor Rowan get trapped by Team Galactic.
  • Named by the Adaptation: He technically still doesn't have a name, but is given a surname. In the games, he's just called 'Professor Rowan's Assistant'.
  • Properly Paranoid: So your 12 year old daughter insists on going out on a journey? Well, hire a pair of bodyguards to go with her! On said journey, his daughter gets caught up in Cyrus' plot to destroy and recreate the world.

Paka and Uji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/paka_and_uji.png

Platinum's hired bodyguards. They tail the protagonists after a mix-up causes their charge to go with Diamond and Pearl.

Roark

Gym Leader of the Oreburgh Gym and foreman of the local mines. He specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. He is Byron's son.

Gardenia

Gym Leader of the Eterna Gym. She specializes in Grass-type Pokémon.

Maylene

Gym Leader of the Veilstone Gym. She specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon.

  • Adapted Out: She doesn't have her Machoke.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: In order to differentiate her Riley, the other trainer with Lucario as their Signature Mon, she instead uses Riolu as her Signature Mon.
  • Barefisted Monk: Specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon.
  • Big Eater: Probably as a direct result of her impoverished lifestyle.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Thanks to her training she is very fit, which allows her subsist on a small amount of food and walk through the snow in her regular atire.
  • Cute Bruiser: She may look cute, but she’s capable of fighting on her own even without Pokémon.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: She despises Platinum at first, but becomes one of her closest friends and training partners after being defeated.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: To prevent overlap from sharing the same Signature Mon like Riley, she instead uses the unevolved Riolu.
  • Ki Manipulation: Her Riolu knows Aura Sphere which the Emanation Pokémon can't learn normally.
  • Parental Neglect: Her father spends all his time gambling so he doesn’t pay attention to her.
  • Perpetual Poverty: She initially was jealous of Platinum's wealth and is often shown to be hungry. During the battle at Spear Pillar, she outright says that she is poor. This comes from some Ascended Fridge Horror taking place here, since in the games her dad is a gambling addict who rarely leaves the place, which is fully shown here.
  • Signature Mon: Riolu instead of a Lucario like in the games.

Crasher Wake

Gym Leader of the Pastoria Gym. He specializes in Water-type Pokémon. He later trains Pearl following the events in Lake Valor.

  • Cool Mask: And he refuses to be seen without it.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Somehow forgot that his gym consists of a series of underwater tunnels and as such when his Quagsire throws Tru and (accidentally) Platinum into the water, Platinum is able to get out of her overalls and back into her regular clothes and the duo swim through the tunnels and up behind Crasher Wake and Quagsire and the Mud Fish Pokémon is finished off via Giga Drain.
  • Large Ham: He is a professional wrestler after all.
  • Making a Splash: Specializes in Water-type Pokémon.
  • Mask Power: He wears a mask and he’s a Gym Leader, one of the strongest trainers in Sinnoh.
  • The Mentor: To Pearl later on in the DP arc.
  • Oh, Crap!: Twice, first when his Quagsire accidentally flings Platinum into the water, due to her overalls having been hooked onto Tru's shell and again when Platinum and Tru pop up out of the water behind him, having forgotten about his own gym's layout.
  • Rain Dance: His Floatzel and Quagsire know this move which they use to refill Lake Valor after Team Galactic's bomb destroys it.
  • Signature Mon: Floatzel.
  • Super-Strength: His Quagsire's strong enough to lift and fling Tru into the water (and Platinum by mistake)
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He never wears a shirt, which is fitting being a wrestler and all.

Fantina

Gym Leader of the Hearthome Gym. A Ghost-type specialist who also enjoys contests. Like Cynthia, she is very fond of the Sinnoh Trio and looks out for them whenever they're in the neighborhood.

  • Adapted Out: She doesn't have her Gengar.
  • Batman Gambit: Her gym gimmick is to force her challengers into thinking logically to reach her then totally breaking that logic when it comes to actually challenging her.
  • Composite Character: She's got her Drifblim and Mismagius from her DP team and her Duskull from her Platinum team.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Lax gets rid of Duskull with a super-effective Lick and Drifblim is seen off by a super-effective Blizzard from Empoleon which punches through Ominous Wind.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: She used Trick Room in her Gym Battle, which allowed Lax, the last Pokémon Platinum had, to go first.
  • Hypocrite: When Platinum and Lax start playing with the stuff in Trick Room, Fantina angrily says they're in the middle of a battle. This, coming from the woman who had her Mismagius set up Trick Room to land numerous cheap hits on Platinum's Pokémon.
  • The Hyena: She laughs hysterically at just about any joke of Dia and Pearl's.
  • Signature Mon: Mismagius.
  • Soul Power: Specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon.
  • Master of Illusion: Her Mismagius can create illusions to disorient her opponents.

Byron

Gym Leader of the Canalave Gym and the father of Roark. He hands out the Mine Badge to Trainers who defeat him. He specializes in Steel-type Pokémon.

  • Adapted Out: He doesn't have his Bronzor, Steelix or Bastidon.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: First his Bronzong easily crush Empoleon with a Payback and then Platinum's Ponyta easily beats them both.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: Specializes in Steel-type Pokémon.
  • Hot-Blooded: He’s very impulsive, attacking the Dex Holders immediately after assuming they are intruders.
  • The Leader: Acts like this to the Gym Leaders uniting them to fight against Team Galactic.
  • The Medic: Is this during when the Gym Leaders are fighting the Galactic Commanders in Spear Pillar, healing their Pokémon underground.
  • Signature Mon: Bronzong since unlike in the game, he gave his Shieldon to Diamond.

Candice

Gym Leader of the Snowpoint Gym. She specializes in Ice-type Pokémon. It is her duty to watch over Lake Acuity and Snowpoint Temple.

  • Adapted Out: She doesn't have her Sneasel or Medicham.
  • Berserk Button: She's quite mad when she realizes that Platinum just wants to get the battle over with to protect Mesprit at Lake Acuity.
  • Exposed to the Elements: She claims that nothing should get in the way of fashion, elements be damned. And she even dubs herself, Maylene, and Platinum as the 'Thin-Clothed Trio'.
  • Genki Girl: She’s very energetic to say the least.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her hair is styled in pigtails and she loves fashion till a point her outfit completely clashes with the icy environment of Snowpoint City and its surrounding areas.
  • Hot-Blooded: Despite her main type.
  • An Ice Person: Specializes in Ice-type Pokémon.
  • Magic Skirt: It is so short, it could be a health hazard in Snowpoint.
  • Signature Mon: Froslass. She would later give this Pokémon to Platinum.
  • Super-Speed: Her Snover is able to take down Empoleon with a Seed Bomb, having launched it as soon as the Ice/Grass-type was struck by Metal Claw.
  • Tempting Fate: She thinks she won her battle with Platinum when Lopunny abruptly faints during the battle with Froslass. Then, Rapidash comes charging out of his Poké Ball and knocks out Frosslass with one blow as it turns out Lopunny used Healing Wish to knock herself out and fully heal Rapidash.

Volkner

Gym Leader of the Sunyshore Gym. He specializes in Electric-type Pokémon. He has been depressed since he hasn't had a good fight in ages and is constantly looking for something to regain his excitement back.

  • Adapted Out: He doesn't have Ambipom, Luxray, Octillery or Jolteon.
  • Bash Brothers: To Elite 4 Member Flint in the Battle Frontier.
  • Blood Knight: Volkner desires exciting fights with very strong fighters.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Get Volkner excited in a duel, and he shifts from apathetic to outspoken on his battles as Giratina found out.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He’s easily the strongest of the Sinnoh Gym Leaders but he’s become bored fighting weak trainers and so he has no drive to battle.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: His Raichu beats Empoleon, but Elekid and Electivire fall to Lopunny and Rapidash without much problems.
  • Jerkass: Uses up enough electricity for his gym to result in the rest of Sunyshore to go into a total blackout, just because he was bored. He also completely ignores Byron's call for help at the Spear Pillar and heads for home instead.
    • He redeems himself in the Platinum arc when he and Flint help defeat Giratina. Perhaps he's developed into a Jerk with a Heart of Gold now.
  • Shock and Awe: Specializes in Electric-type Pokémon.
  • Signature Mon: Electivire.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: The Straight Man to Flint's Hot-Blooded Wise Guy.
  • Worthy Opponent: Views Platina as one, impressed by her knowledge on Pokémon battles and the experience she accumulated following her defeat to Jupiter.

Looker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/looker_adventures.png

Member of the International Police and helps Platinum investigate the Distortion World so he can find information on Team Galactic.

  • Ascended Extra: Gets a lot more to do in Black 2 & White 2 than he did in the games.
  • Badass Longcoat: A brown one that fits with his Interpol design.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his eccentric personality and his status as a Butt-Monkey, he was shown to be a very capable Police Agent and trainer.
  • Butt-Monkey: His gadgets have a tendency to break and when they do, he gets hurt in the process.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Or rather, calling your gadgets, with him shouting the name of the Interpol equipment whenever pulling one out.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He doesn't look like it, but in the BW arc he manages to make it to the top 8 of the Unova League.
  • Interpol Special Agent: It’s his job. He has been seen on several missions in the manga. He investigated the Distortion World alongside Platinum in the Platinum arc, he infiltrated the Pokémon League to find if one of the participants was a member of Team Plasma in the Black & White arc and he worked alongside Blake to arrest the Seven Sages in the Black 2 & White 2 arc.
  • Known Only by Their Nickname: Looker is obviously not his real name and we will likely never learn what it really is.
  • The Lancer: Looker ends up being one to two Dex users: Platina in order to help her investigate the Distortion World to apprehend Team Galactic, and to his younger but direct superior in the force Blake to arrest the sages of Team Galactic.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Looker puts on a pair of gag glasses while participating in the Unova Pokémon League. Leo even blurts his name out in the Black and White 2 arc.
  • Put on a Bus: Is hospitalized after his return from Stark Mountain, where he returns at the very end of the Pt arc to arrest Team Galactic.
  • Signature Mon: Croagunk.
  • Undying Loyalty: Once he accepts Blake as his superior, he stays by his side and aids him, even when he's kicked out of the International Police. This impresses the Interpol.

     Sinnoh Battle Frontier

Palmer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/palmer.png
The Tower Tycoon of Sinnoh's Battle Tower. He is the father of Pearl.

  • Adapted Out: Lacks most of his Pokémon.
  • Badass Longcoat: Although not that long since it stops at his knees.
  • Generation Xerox: Pearl is a lot like him.
  • Insistent Terminology: Frequently insists that Pearl call him Daddy instead of just Dad.
  • Parental Abandonment: Debatable case. Pearl mentions he wasn't around much and Palmer himself is saddened by the fact that he learned secondhand that Pearl was involved in a life and death battle at Spear Pillar. On the other hand, he taught Pearl a great deal about battling and is highly respected by his son. Also, the only specific event we see in Pearl's backstory has Palmer finding him and Dia when they got lost.
  • Parents as People: He loves Pearl but since he spends all his time battling and wasn’t aware of Pearl’s involvement in the battle against Team Galactic he thinks he’s a terrible father.
  • Signature Mon: Cresselia.

Darach

Butler of Cailtin and battles in her place in the Battle Castle as the Castle Valet.

  • Adapted Out: He doesn't have Empoleon (for obvious reasons) nor Entei.
  • Battle Butler: For Caitlin.
  • Composite Character: He's got Houndoom and Staraptor from his Silver Print challenge and Gallade from his Gold Print challenge.
  • Mood-Swinger: When he battles, he switches from his usual reserved manner and takes on a more bloodthirsty personality. According to his own comments, he was unaware of this until people actually told him.
  • Signature Mon: Gallade.

Caitlin

Frontier Brain of Sinnoh's Battle Castle. Due to her powerful Psychic Powers, she is not allowed to battle or else her abilities will go out of control. She later becomes one the Elite Four of the Unova region.

  • Adapted Out: Gothitelle's her lone Pokémon in the Unova arc.
  • Cute and Psycho: When she loses control.
  • Madness Mantra: Fightfightfightfightfightfightfightfightfightfightfightfight.....
  • Psychic Powers: Manifesting in her hair drastically lengthening and attacking people.
    • By the time the story rolls into Unova, her control has increased. With her Gothitelle helping her, she can transmit messages from people whose location she does not know, ie, the kidnapped Gym Leaders.
    • She also specializes in Psychic-type Pokémon.
  • Signature Mon: Gothitelle.

Dahlia

Arcade Star of Sinnoh's Battle Arcade. She loves to dance and it extends to her Pokémon as well.

Thorton

Factory Head of Sinnoh's Battle Factory. Uses machines to help calculate the probabilities of his chances in battle.

  • Awesome by Analysis: He is always analyzing things down to percentages and uses that to formulate his strategies.
  • Catchphrase: After giving the percentages of something he will add “ah, don’t mind that number.”
  • Failed a Spot Check: Fails to notice he's actually lost his fight with Platinum because the Alakazam she was using had used Drain Punch.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He invented a Pokémon analyzer that he uses to determine his strategies. He was also able to repair a Team Galactic spy robot.
  • Heroic RRoD: Sits out the final fight because the expenditure of fixing up the Galactic spy robot causes him to conk out.
  • Mood-Swinger: He switches from calm and rational to a crybaby when he loses to Platinum.
  • Not So Stoic: Tends to have the same glazed-eye expression on his face no matter what, but Platinum's victory causes his stoic exterior to crack and then outright shatter.

Argenta

Hall Matron of Sinnoh's Battle Hall.

Riley

A friend of Byron's that was asked to help train Diamond in battling before he goes to Lake Verity. He has the ability to use Aura.

Buck

A trainer who battles at the Battle Frontier. He is Flint's younger brother.

  • Adapted Out: He doesn't have any of his Battleground or Battle Tower partner teams.
  • Fiery Redhead: A trait he shares with his older brother Flint.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is very loud and straightforward. This backfires on him when he releases Heatran, inadvertently letting Charon take control of it.
  • Signature Mon: Claydol.

Marley

A trainer who battles at the Battle Frontier.

  • Adapted Out: She doesn't have any of her Battleground or Battle Tower partner teams.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: She wears a black and white frilly dress.
  • Olympus Mons: She befriends Shaymin and it decides to stay with her.
  • Signature Mon: Arcanine.
  • The Stoic: She generally doesn’t express emotions but she shows a softer side around Shaymin.

Mira

A trainer who battles at the Battle Frontier.

  • Adapted Out: She doesn't have any of her Battleground or Battle Tower partner teams.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Loud and childish. Seconds after entering the Distortion World, and being told that everyone should stick together, she immediately runs off.
  • Signature Mon: Alakazam.

Cheryl

A trainer who battles at the Battle Frontier.

Antagonists

     Team Galactic

General tropes:

  • Heel–Face Turn: At the end of the Platinum arc. Cyrus disbands Team Galactic, the three admins decide to follow him, and the advanced grunt is no longer in Team Galactic due to the influence of Sird gone. The only one to avert this is Charon.
  • Synchronization: The members work in perfectly coordinated groups, to the point that they take action at exactly the same time. Deconstructed when it's shown by Paka, Uji, Diamond and Pearl that that can easily be taken advantage of with stalling and crowd control tactics, as shown when the four of them take out an entire platoon on their own.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Want to create a united world, with the executives (except Charon) all believing in their boss' plan.

Cyrus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/220px-Cyrus_Adventures_4746.png
The Leader of Team Galactic. He wishes to control Time and Space. The Sinnoh Trio first met him at Mt. Coronet, where he attacked them with Probopass and Magnezone.

  • Adapted Out: He lacks his Crobat.
  • Big Bad: Of the D/P arc and one of the most powerful. He fights CYNTHIA to a standstill! And he probably would've won if he didn't need to get to the Spear Pillar. Then he goes on absolutely destroy six Gym Leaders at the same time, by himself.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Most members of Team Galactic are motivated by their fear of... getting pinched. On the arm... to be fair, it does look like it hurts.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With the Sinnoh trio at the end of the Platinum arc, but with Dia in particular.
  • Knight of Cerebus: His intimidating presence makes the rather lighthearted DP arc take a serious turn, especially in Solaceon Ruins.
  • Lack of Empathy: Cyrus almost seems inhuman. If something doesn't interest him, he pretends it doesn't exist. This changes in Platinum.
  • Large Ham: Though he generally tends to match the stoicism of his game counterpart, when he gets going, he... really gets going.
  • Manly Tears: After he summons Dialga and Palkia, you begin to see tears come out of his eyes after witnessing his plan come to fruition. He's also seen with tears running down his face while he tries to prevent his plan from being ruined. The colored back cover of 25th anniversary artbook shows them as blood.
  • Olympus Mons: Using the Red Chain, he controls Dialga and Palkia and forces them to fight each other to create a new universe.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: He intends to destroy the universe in order to remake it in his own image.
  • Pet the Dog: More like "Pet the Shaymin".
  • Signature Mon: Probopass and Magnezone.
  • "Spread Wings" Frame Shot: One chapter has him standing with his Honchkrow's wings spread behind him, making him look like an angel of darkness.
  • The Stoic: Not So Stoic when he's in Large Ham mode, though.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He believes that while Emotion, Knowledge and Willpower can make a complete world; the current world always has one that is lacking. He wants to make a new world without these aspects, which he believes, will be perfect.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Perfectly willing to smack Dia across the face with the Red Chain of all things.

Mars

One of the three commanders of Team Galactic. She first encountered the DPP trio at Valley Windworks.

  • Affably Evil: She comes off as a nice person (at one point trying to get Diamond to watch a potential explosion with her as if they were friends), and laughs at Diamond and Pearl’s jokes, but she is willing to do evil things as a member of Team Galactic.
  • Canon Foreigner: Has an Electivire and Yanmega.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: A lot more...out there than in the games. She thinks Team Galactic's evildoing is fun, and not in the usual For the Evulz sense either, she's just honestly that weird in the head and can't fathom how anyone couldn't find it fun too.
  • Cute and Psycho: She's cute and childish, and as an official profile states, she "walks to the beat of her own drum".
  • Evil Counterpart: To Diamond.
  • Evil Redhead: Albeit oddly likable, as stated below.
  • Giggling Villain: She laughs a lot, especially compared to her colleagues.
  • Lack of Empathy: Which serves to highlight her contrast to Diamond. She truly cannot comprehend why other people don't feel the same way about things as she does.
  • Perky Female Minion: Probably the most cheerful of the three commanders. Doesn't necessarily prevent her from enjoying the prospect of blowing up Lake Verity a little too much, but considering her state of mind...
  • Pet the Dog: According to Pearl, "She watched our routine, so maybe she's not all bad!"
  • Signature Mon: Purugly.
  • Villainous Crush: Thinks that Volkner is cool and that they'll make a cute couple since they both have Electivires.

Saturn

One of the three commanders of Team Galactic.

Jupiter

One of the three commanders of Team Galactic. Wears a warmth supporter on her left leg.

  • Adaptational Curves: Zigzagged. She is the most well-endowed of the two female Galactic Commanders even in the games, and her outfit is already more form-fitting than Mars there as well. But whereas in the games her outfit just fitted her body, here her outfit is absolutely skintight, resulting in her boobs and butt bulging out of it and making her curves much more noticeable.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance: She doesn't appear until Platinum reaches Lake Acuity, while in the games she's encountered as early on as Eterna City.
  • Adapted Out: Her signature Pokémon Skuntank is nowhere to be seen, with her team looking nothing like in game; Sableye, Gastrodon, and Tangrowth.
  • Dark Action Girl: She defeats Platinum, Maylene, and Candice by herself without even breaking a sweat, and even when she's overcome by the latter two later, she still goes down fighting. She is also probably the most individually powerful of the three commanders.
  • Determinator: The last commander to go down in the final battle; she stayed in the game long after Mars and Saturn had been knocked unconscious.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Platinum.
  • Karmic Defeat: By Maylene and Candice, the same ones she defeated and gloated over earlier.
  • Male Gaze: Many panels specifically show her from a higher angle to show off her large chest, or from behind to emphasize her butt.
  • Signature Mon: Tangrowth.
  • The Stoic: For the most part, but can occasionally slip into Not So Stoic in battle.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Cyrus. She's close enough to him to even know what town he grew up in.

Advanced level Grunt

This refers to the unnamed grunt who has had more encounters with the DPPt trio than the other grunts, whom Cyrus seems to be give as much responsibilities to as the four commanders. He shows great interest in the Pokédexes.

  • Anti-Villain: He arrives to release Mr. Berlitz and Professor Rowan early, stating that he sees no point in making them suffer unnecessarily. He also mentions that he prefers to avoid a fight with Platinum. The worst things he does he only does because Sird is controlling him.
  • Badass Cape: Which is how he is visually distinct from the regular Galactic Grunts.
  • Blackmail: He makes Professor Berlitz provide funds for the Galactic Bomb by tricking him to think that Platinum is in their hands.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Sird implanted her consciousness into him. This is why he becomes so fixated on the Pokédexs.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: He (subconsciously) places priority of obtaining the Pokédexes over that of guarding the three lake guardians due to Sird's brainwashing.
  • Elite Mook: Despite looking just like an ordinary Galactic Grunt, he is not part of the Hive Mind and is trusted with important tasks.
  • Helpful Mook: He tells Platinum about TG's plans to detonate the Galactic bomb in a week's time. Later, he also tells Diamond where the three lake guardians are being held.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After being freed from Sird’s mind control he is haunted by the crimes he had committed.
  • No Name Given: Despite having as much personality and screen time as the commanders.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: He can be differentiated from the rest of the grunts by the cloak that he wears over his Galactic uniform.
  • Personal Mook: To Cyrus and Sird.
  • Taught by Experience: After over 400 chapters, someone finally notices that all dex holders tend to get involved in battles that could decide the fate of their regions/world. Possibly because he's brainwashed by someone who's had previous encounters with them.

Charon

The chief scientist of Team Galactic. Appears briefly in the Diamond/Pearl arc and goes on to become the main antagonist of the Platinum arc.

  • Big Bad: Of the Platinum arc.
  • Brainwashed: He has a machine that lets him take control of Pokémon.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Appears unnamed before the finale of the Diamond and Pearl arc as the head of the Red Chain project. In the final chapter of the arc, he reveals his name and importance, going on to be the next arc's Big Bad.
  • Dirty Coward: When things go south for him, he reveals himself to be totally cowardly.
  • Dragon Ascendant: After Cyrus is pulled into the Distortion World by Giratina at the end of Diamond & Pearl Charon makes his move, setting himself up to be the Big Bad of the Platinum arc.
  • Evil Laugh: He sports this frequently.
  • Gotta Catch 'Em All: Is obsessed with collecting all the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon in Sinnoh so that he can use them to rule the world.
  • Jerkass: Not the nicest person around. Most exemplified when he taunts Pearl about Dia’s supposed death.
  • Karma Houdini: In the Diamond and Pearl arc. Finally gets his just desserts in the Platinum arc.
  • Kick the Dog: He mocks Pearl when it looks like Diamond's been killed by Giratina.
  • Mad Scientist: He’s the one who created the Red Chain as well as a machine that lets him control Pokémon and he is clearly not right in the head.
  • Olympus Mons: Over the course of Platinum he manages to take control of Heatran, Darkrai and Giratina.
  • Oh, Crap!: Tons and tons once his plans start falling apart such as when Reg appears with Rotom's devices to allow it to change, behind him no less and when he and Giratina get walloped by Garchomp's Draco Meteor.
  • Signature Mon: Slowking.
  • Villain Has a Point: When Cyrus and his 3 commanders take their leave, he shouts if the heroes will just let them get away scot-free.

Sird

Initially appearing as a part of Team Rocket's Beast Trio, Sird would be revealed to be a Team Galactic Commander in the Diamond and Pearl chapter. For more info, see here under Beast Trio.

    Creation Trio

Dialga and Palkia

Two Pokémon sought after by Cyrus so he can achieve his goal to create a new world. After summoning them, he controlled them with the Red Chain and forced them to fight until Time and Space began to distort. They were eventually freed by the efforts of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

Giratina

A Pokémon roaming the Distortion World, an alternate dimension. Afterword Platinum begins investigating it.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rre.png
  • Adaptational Villainy: In Pokémon Platinum, it directly interfered with Cyrus's plans as he would destroy both worlds they lived in, and the disaster it caused was only because of its presence. Here it teams up with Charon and deliberately drags Dialga and Palkia into the Distortion World in an attempt to usurp them.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Charon in the Platinum arc.
  • Casting a Shadow: Knows Shadow Force.
  • Combat Tentacles: Has these in its Origin Forme. It uses them to drag Dialga and Palkia into the Distortion World at the end of the Diamond & Pearl chapter.
  • Dracolich: It is Ghost and Dragon-type.
  • Know When to Fold Them: After getting sneak attacked by Volkner and Flint's Pokémon and seeing everyone glaring at it, Giratina cuts its losses and returns to the Distortion World.
  • Olympus Mons: It is an incredibly powerful Legendary Pokémon, being the master of anti-matter.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Dragon is its secondary type.
  • Soul Power: Ghost is its primary type.
