    Ruby

Ruby

The Charmer

"True beauty lies in the heart! The heart that is capable of love!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ruby_adventures.png
Original appearance

The male protagonist of the RS Arc. Despite being the son of Gym Leader Norman, Ruby is deeply fixated on Pokémon contests and the beauty and appearance of his team. Naturally, this has put him at odds with his father. First Pokémon(s) are a Skitty named Kiki, a Poochyena named Nana, and a Ralts named Rara. His starter is a Mudkip named Mumu.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Ruby is able to guess what nature a Pokémon has. This comes into play when he lured one of Blaise's Slugma's (Who had a Calm nature) by using a green Pokéblock into the submarine.
  • Bishie Sparkle: Whenever he says something related to beautifying or contests, sparkles show up.
  • Commonality Connection: He gets along with Hoenn Fanclub Chairman for their love of contests, so much so that he's the only person in Hoenn Ruby has emphathy for early on in the arc.
  • The Bet: Both he and Sapphire made a bet to accomplish their goals within 80 days. It ends in a tie.
  • Camp Straight: Flamboyant and has very girly habits, but definitely in love with Sapphire whether he says so or not. Completely averted with his original personality.
  • Catchphrase: "Beautiful!!"
  • The Chosen One: To Rayquaza and the prophecy of destroying the Delta Meteor along with Sapphire.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: He initially decided not to help Sapphire save Hoenn from Groudon and Kyogre's wrath, but he goes back and helps her a short while later
  • Covert Pervert: Notable example includes him taking an unconscious Sapphire's measurements. Justified; it's for modifying a change of his clothes for her.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He does whatever he can to avoid direct Pokémon confrontation. Push him into it or remove him from the public eye, however, and you'll learn quick that five years isn't enough to dull his blade.
  • Deadpan Snarker: A mild one, but especially towards Sapphire in the RS chapter.
  • Death Glare: At one point in the Ruby/Sapphire chapter, he does such a glare towards a rampaging Lileep and Anorith. The two immediately calmed down afterwards from pure fright.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: Downplayed. Unlike his game counterpart, Ruby is near-sighted and has to wear glasses to see clearly, which he isn't fond of.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: "I'm running away from my home because my father can't accept my dream to be a Pokémon Coordinator!"
  • The Dandy: Very much so; he's rather fashion obsessed.
  • The Fashionista: A male version since he's more into Pokémon contests than gym battles.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: More so for his Pokémon than himself, but he covers up his scar and dislikes using his glasses.
  • Forgotten Childhood Friend: He and Sapphire for each other.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: As The Charmer, he's the master of Contests.
  • Good Is Not Nice: For one example, after escaping from Courtney's clutches following their first confrontation, he casually cuts the wire holding her and sends her plummeting into a flaming inferno. She survives, but geez!
  • Idiot Hair: There's one under his hat.
  • Implausible Deniability: The defining characteristic of his later relationship with Sapphire. At the end of the RS arc, HE MADE A DAMN LOVE CONFESSION, but when questioned on it in the Emerald arc says he doesn't remember anything.
  • Instant Expert: He mastered Mega Evolution way before Sapphire and Emerald. First with Latios, and then with Mumu who he hasn't even trained to perform Mega Evolution.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Fashionable: He even made a new outfit to barbarian Sapphire out of his own spare clothes to achive this.
  • It Was with You All Along: His search for the ultimate Contest Pokémon. A Milotic, which Feefee eventually evolves into.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rather impetuous and vain, but his heart's in the right place.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Special mention for actually having a closet full of identical outfits, including multiples of his hat. Seen here.
  • Jerkass Ball: Had two What the Hell, Hero? moments in a row prior to the climax of the Ruby & Sapphire arc; He first refuses to aid Sapphire in saving Hoenn from destruction because ''"It wasn't his problem"'' and then takes out his anger on his Feebas for losing a contest. It wasn't until after his Feebas abandoned him for his actions that he realizes the error of his ways.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: When summoning Celebi. No matter how much of an Asspull it may be, it. Was. AWESOME.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The Camp Straight to Sapphire's Tomboy. The fact that he's named after the pink or red colored Ruby, while Sapphire is named after the blue colored Sapphire accentuates this.
  • May–December Romance: Courtney certainly seemed interested...
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Does this after realizing the consequences of yelling at his Feebas, Feefee.
    • Once again ORAS realizing how much damage keeping Sapphire out of the loop had caused.
  • Non-Action Guy: What he becomes due to believing It's All His Fault. While he managed to repel a Salamence that attacked him and Sapphire five years prior to the bet, he dropped competitive battling after he mistakenly believes he tainted her "crystal-clear heart". This is also why he just accepted all the scoldings Sapphire gave him.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: At first, he refuses to help Sapphire save the Hoenn region from certain catastrophe.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: More like Obfuscating Incompetence. See It's All My Fault.
  • Olympus Mons: The most prominent among the Dex Holders. To list:
    • He absorbs the Blue Orb into his body and thus he is able to control Kyogre, even if he only commands him to return to his slumber.
    • Celebi joined him shortly before going to Hoenn.
    • In the beginning of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he befriends Latios and use him to travel to the Sky Pillar.
    • Also in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he and Sapphire are chosen by Rayquaza to assist him in protecting the world from the Meteroid.
    • Finally, Diancie briefly joins him for a contest at the end of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: In the absence of an audience to view his battling prowess.
  • The Run Away: His father practically hunts him down for doing so.
  • Scars Are Forever: He was badly injured by a Salamence when he was younger, and the scars remained even after those years.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend : To Sapphire. He openly denies his feelings for her when the chips are not down.
  • Significant Name:
    • He's named after the pink/red-colored Ruby, which fits quite well with his status as the pink boy to Sapphire's blue girl.
    • His birthday is the 2nd of July, in which his month’s birthstone and zodiac sign’s (Cancer) birthstone is ruby.
  • Stoic Spectacles: Ruby actually has bad eyesight. When he's sewing, they may count as Nerd Glasses, but he also wears them when he's figuring out battle strategies. He actually looks pretty intelligent in them.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: When he takes off his hat, he really looks like mini-Norman.
  • Super-Speed: his Running Shoes allow him to keep up with cars. Much better than their game counterpart, which amounted to researching running.
  • Theme Naming: His Pokémon's names all consist of part of their species' name (a single kana in Japanese) repeated twice: Nana the Poochyena, Kiki the Skitty, and so on.
  • Took a Level in Badass: While he was already a badass to begin with, ORAS has Ruby getting down and dirty on the likes of Zinnia and the Draconid People, and mastering the art of Mega Evolution on Latios without formal training.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Continues the trend of one per generation. His eyes become particularly sharp when he fights seriously away from public eye.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: With Sapphire as Ms Wild and Ruby himself as the Uptight. Inverted from their time as kids.
  • We Can Rule Together: Offered by Courtney in the R/S Saga, when she asked him if he wanted to join Team Magma.
  • What the Hell, Hero?
    • He demonstrates Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass on instinct before Sapphire, and yet he still refuses to help save Hoenn from the maniacs in Teams Magma and Aqua. Sapphire was not pleased at all. Wallace has to spell it out for Ruby before he does this.
    • In the ORAS Chapter his decision to not tell Sapphire about the meteor or what the training was for backfires on everyone horribly, resulting in Sapphire becoming temporary mute from the shock.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: An arguable Rare Male Example. That being said, Hoenn also has Wallace and Steven.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Played strangely. After his love confession at the end of RSE, Ruby continues to play it cool and not give any hint of his feelings. Even five years later, where Sapphire is obviously still in love with him, he stays aloof.
  • With My Hands Tied: His fight with Blaise in the submarine, as he's backed into a corner and his arms are tied to his sides. He manages to escape unharmed, though.

Ruby's Pokémon

Nana

One of Ruby's starter Pokémon. A Delcatty that is used in Cute rank contests.

Rara (Ruru)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rara_gardevoir.png
One of Ruby's starter Pokémon. A Kirlia that is used in Smart rank contests. Due to being stuck with Wally for most of Ruby's adventure, she was unable to participate in contests and Fofo was used in her place. She evolves into a Gardevoir in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc.

Mumu (Zuzu)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mumu_5.png
A Pokémon that Ruby got from Professor Birch. A Swampert that is used in Tough rank contests.

Fofo (Popo)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20171010201337fofo.png
A Castform that used to belong to Mr. Stone until he was put into a coma because of Team Aqua. She is used in Smart Rank contests due to Rara being with Wally.

Feefee (Mimi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20101104005416feefee.png
A Milotic that Ruby caught as a Feebas, much to his chagrin. After some Character Development, he found out that even though she is ugly on the outside, she is beautiful on the inside, causing her to evolve into a Milotic, a Pokémon he had been searching for. She is used in Beauty rank contests.

Plusle

    Sapphire

Sapphire Birch (Sapphire Odamaki)

The Conqueror

"What did you train yourself for?! Shouldn't it be to help those who are in trouble?!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sapphire_oras_chapter.png
Original appearance

The female protagonist for the RS arc. The yang to Ruby's yin, she assists Prof. Birch in his studies and is more than ready for anything nature can throw at her. After an argument with Ruby, she sets off both their journeys with a bet - she'll see Pokémon contests in a new light if he can get all the ribbons in 80 days, while she seeks to get all the local badges in that time limit. First Pokémon is an Aron named Rono while starter is a Torchic named Chic.

  • Adaptational Badass: The most aggressive version of the character, especially moreso than May is as a NPC or from the anime.
  • Adaptational Deviation: She's the only version of May/Hakura not to be a Pokémon Coordinator, choosing to compete in the gym circuit instead.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: In comparison to most depictions, in which May is a Nice Girl in both the games and the anime, Sapphire is very snippy with Ruby (if not outright aggressive), and is more than willing to throw down with her own bare hands.
  • Badass Adorable: She deserves special mention—she actually FIGHTS Pokémon unaided!
  • Badass Normal: One of a small list of humans who fight Pokémon unaided. She does have her own, but she's hardly helpless without them.
  • The Bet: Both she and Ruby made a bet to accomplish their goals within 80 days. It ends in a tie.
  • Book Dumb: She has trouble reading kanji, or complex words in the English version. Subverted once she got the tough-sounding words out of the way, as she went down as the first to score perfect marks in Roxanne's written exam gym challenge.
    • That being said, she still has problems writing, as seen when she loses her voice in ORAS, her penmanship is atrocious.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Breaking a (weakened) fountain and sprinting while carrying two full-grown men and a woman near the start of the arc should give you an idea what she's capable of.
    • She's strong enough to carry boulders bigger than she is for the sole purpose of smashing Emerald's face in for teasing her.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: As shown by the above quote. She always goes out of her way to help any person or Pokémon in need, and chews out Ruby big time for refusing to do the same.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: During the ORAS arc when Ruby is suspiciously hiding that he’s spending time with Lisia. Turns out that they were making contest clothes for himself and Sapphire that he wanted to keep a suprise.
  • Cute Bruiser: Extremely cute, and an excellent battler.
  • Cute Little Fangs: To emphasize how much of a Wild Child she is, she is typically drawn to have a couple of small fangs.
  • Defiant Strip: Sapphire was introduced in a skimpy Garden Garment, but Ruby freaked out and convinced her to put on regular clothes. Later, when Sapphire gets ultra pissed off at Ruby's selfishness, she strips right in front of him, making him freak out, and puts her garden garment back on.
  • Forgotten Childhood Friend: To Ruby.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: As The Conqueror, she's the master of Gym Battles.
  • Garden Garment: The outfit she wore as a Wild Child included nothing but a grass skirt and a leaf bra.
  • Hero Worship: Wants to be just like Red.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Red's achievements were actually the motivation for her journey in the first place.
  • Heroic BSoD: The revelation that Ruby knew about the meteor hurtling toward the planet and kept her in the dark shocks her so badly that she loses her voice for much of the ORAS arc.
  • Hot-Blooded: Not as much as Pearl, Gold, or Black though (She may have started out on par with them, but she mellows out by the end).
  • The Ingenue: Was this when she was younger. It's also part of what crushed the younger Ruby so much when he thought he'd scared her.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She has absolutely no qualms in going around in a leaf bikini or taking her clothes off in front of strangers.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Wild Girl", courtesy of Gold.
  • Jungle Princess: She becomes this due to believing It's All Her Fault that Ruby got hurt. That same Salamence in Ruby's tragic backstory cut him up before he chased it off. She blamed herself for her own weakness and inability to fight, and went native as part of her assistance in Prof. Birch's research to rectify that. Along the way, she engaged in some badass grinding, and only went from there after her wager with Ruby.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The tomboy to Ruby's Camp Straight. The fact that she's named after the blue colored Sapphire, while Ruby is named after the pink or red colored Ruby accentuates this.
  • Mood-Swinger: Tends to be this in the remake arc whenever Ruby's in the picture.
  • Primal Stance: Sometimes assumes this pose when wearing leaves.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Hilariously with Ruby. Played straight in the beginning, but in the Emerald arc, she's ready to beat the shit out of him whenever he claims to have forgotten what exactly happened during the RS climax, including their love confessions to each other.
  • Significant Name:
    • She's named after the blue-colored Sapphire, which fits quite well with her status as the blue girl to Ruby's pink boy.
    • Her birthday is the 20th of September, in which her month’s birthstone and zodiac sign’s (Virgo) birthstone is sapphire.
  • The Speechless: Rendered this temporary during ORAS after finding out that Ruby was keeping her out of the entire Delta Meteor incident loop.
  • Tomboy: Her goal is to beat all of the gym leaders in Hoenn, and she scoffs at the idea of participating in contests.
  • Tomboyness Upgrade: An aggressive, super-strong Wild Child, she is initially one of the most tomboyish female leads. Her arc eventually reveals that she started out a cheerful, feminine dress-wearing little girl before a traumatic incident. Once she and Ruby patch things up, elements of her old personality start resurfacing in the present, making her more of a Tomboy with a Girly Streak.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Post-Character Development, remnants of her old personality are starting to surface back up, such as her admitting that the way Ruby grooms his Pokémon is beautiful and her being a romantic. She's even eager to do contests with Ruby by the ORAS arc.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: With Ruby as the Uptight and her as the Wild.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: The tragic backstory left her bitter and perpetually angry youth, especially towards Ruby, who accidentally caused it in the first place.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: While normally fearless, a recount of her fight with Frontier Brain Tucker during the Emerald saga suggests she still has trouble dealing with Salamence, most likely due to her encounter with one.
  • Wild Child: Gold even nicknames her "Wild Girl". Sounds accurate, given her aggression and willingness to wear grass and leaves.

    Emerald

Emerald

The Calmer

"It's not the Pokémon battles that I like! It's the Pokémon...and the people who like Pokémon!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emerald_oras_chapter.png
Original appearance

The protagonist of the Emerald arc. He is the second main character in the manga not to be based on a game protagonist. A trainer who loves Pokémon battles but not Pokémon (at first), he utilizes a variety of gadgets and is a genius at item battles. He challenges the Hoenn Battle Frontier in his arc, claiming that he will subdue the Frontier Brains in the seven days prior to the opening ceremonies. He's the first main character whose first Pokémon is actually a starter*, in this case Sceptile.

  • Anime Hair: Justified, as he's using hair gel to make himself look bigger. Between the events of the Emerald chapter and Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire chapter, he started wearing his hair down.
  • Anti-Hero: Comes across as Nominal by the series' standards, but a Disney one overall.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Just one glance tells him the origin site of a Pokémon. Given just how he calms the (unnaturally) frenzied Pokémon in the arc, it qualifies. He also demonstrates this during his Battle Factory challenge, making tactical switches to build his team out of Pokémon he's never used before, based on the roles he needs them to fill. It's no surprise why he quickly bonded with Noland after their battle.
    • Emerald's subsequent challenges of the Pike and Pyramid turn out to be this too, as he handpicks teams specifically tailored to counter each facility's gimmicks.
  • Artificial Limbs: His hand extenders & platform shoes can count as this.
  • Badass Bandolier: He wears two of these in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
  • The Bet: He made one with the Frontier Brains that he will beat them all in seven days.
  • Berserk Button: Do not call him short. Just... Don't.
    • Referring to people or Pokémon as "tools" to use as one pleases hits home very hard for Emerald given his backstory. Guile Hideout declaring this is enough for Emerald to give the villain his angriest Death Glare in the series.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Just don't say it in his face.
  • The Call Put Me on Hold: At first he was refused to be given a PokéDex, only to be given to him much later after undergoing both the Secret Test of Character and several months of Training from Hell.
  • Canon Foreigner: Like Yellow, he doesn't have a game counterpart.
  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • He was shown as a shadow at the end of Crystal, although you can't even recognize him since he hadn't been given his distinctive hair by then.
    • The panel of his trainer card appears in the Ruby and Sapphire arc.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His parents died so he moved from relative to relative, and they bullied him for being short. He considered Pokémon, which play with him and offer him help when needed, his only friends. But others then said that he was only using them as 'limbs'. This caused him to ran away finally and vowed not to rely on Pokémon anymore.
  • Drought Level of Doom: Emerald has to battle many times before facing the Frontier Brain in each facility, so it counts.
  • Friendless Background: The Loner Type.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Uses a variety of gizmos and gadgets to calm down wild Pokémon, fight better and make himself look bigger.
  • Height Angst: Emerald is extremely short, and has been bullied about it his whole life. It's given him a complex, and he does everything he can to hide his true height.
  • Hero-Worshipper: It was due to Crystal's selfless actions for her community that motivated him to become a Dex Holder in the first place.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Rebuffed and insulted the Pokémon team he gained for their affections so no one would insult them for being like substitute limbs for him.
    • When he encounters a rampaging horde of Battle Frontier rental Pokémon under Guile Hideout's control, Emerald prioritizes pacifying the Pokémon he feels are suffering the most.
  • Honor Before Reason:
    • He refuses to acknowledge that the bonds he's formed with his Pokémon contribute to his victories, and to prove this point he exchanges his roster for a team he's never used before. To battle a Frontier Brain. After witnessing the Heroic Resolve of his Sceptile saving him from being defeated by Ruby.
    • When fighting his way through the Battle Tower to confront Guile Hideout, he refuses to break the rules of the Battle Tower despite fighting for his life and the lives of everyone in the Battle Frontier.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Type B.
  • Important Hair Accessory: His green gem in his forehead. Turns out the gem was used in a failed attempt to control Rayquaza earlier in the Ruby and Sapphire arc.
  • I Work Alone: The first time he met them, he refused Ruby and Sapphire's offer to help in his mission.
  • Improbable Hairstyle: Justified. Again, hair gel. He wears a much more normal hairstyle in the ORAS chapter.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He really does come to like his team, but he puts up quite the arrogant front.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Emerald was a loner prior to his debut, until he finally comes to terms with his true desire to forge bonds between fellow Dex Owners as well as Pokémon.
  • The Napoleon: The only character in the series shorter than Yellow (until the Sun and Moon arc)! His equipment provides a marginally effective ruse, but it can't hope to last.
  • Significant Name:
    • He's named after the green-colored emerald, which fits quite well along with his companions Ruby and Sapphire.
    • His birthday is at 31st of May, in which his birthstone is emerald.
  • Third Wheel: Has to suffer through Ruby and Sapphire's unusual relationship.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: His eyebrows extend beyond his hair. Presumably another one of his enhancements, as his eyebrows are normal in ORAS.
  • Urine Trouble: He has a rather weird habit of peeing from the windows of tall buildings. ViZ changes this into different things whenever possible such as him pouring a can of soda onto Ruby and Sapphire.
  • V-Sign: He does this after he gets 17 consecutive wins in the Battle Factory.
  • Walk on Water: His shoes made by the Trick Master allows him to stand on water, which he used to look for Birch when Hoenn was flooded by Kyogre.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • When he recalled his three most trusted Pokémon and replaces them with another prior to the final Battle Dome Match, which he loses horribly. Crystal subtly gives him this by sending him his replacement team, taking longer than usual and without a friendly message like she usually does.
    • Later, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he gives a speech about this to everyone, asking why they were so intent on using only lore (Zinnia) or technology (Devon) to stop the meteor. This causes a collective realization about the need to cooperate.

Emerald's Pokémon

Sceptile

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emerald_sceptile.png
Emerald's starter Pokémon that got from the Battle Factory. Briefly partnered with Wally before being lost at sea.

Sudowoodo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emerald_sudowoodo.png
A Pokémon that Emerald encountered when he first arrived at the Battle Frontier. She later followed him because she wanted join his team.

  • Berserk Button: As with all Sudowoodo, getting wet sets her off. She's introduced attacking Todd because he thought she was a tree and watered her.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: She's Rock-type.
  • Team Mom: She's very nurturing towards Emerald.
  • When Trees Attack: Not actually a tree, but she mimics one.

Dusclops

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emerald_dusclops.png
A Pokémon that Emerald encountered at the Battle Pike. He later followed him because he wanted join his team.

Mr. Mime

A Pokémon that went rampaging because of Guile Hideout. After being calmed down, it was given to Emerald by Norman.

Mantine

A Pokémon that went rampaging because of Guile Hideout. After being calmed down, she was given to Emerald by Norman.

Allies

    Supporting Characters

Professor Birch

The Hoenn Pokémon professor, and father of Sapphire. Unlike the previously mentioned professors, he seems to do much more field work.

  • Satellite Character: There is very little to him besides being Sapphire’s father and Norman’s friend.

Wally

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/200px_wally_adventures.png

A major supporting character who at one point temporarily holds a Pokédex. Ruby helps give him some Pokémon training when Norman (who doesn't show up until after Ruby's gone, much to his relief) rejects training him, but the two get separated soon thereafter. His "starter" is Ruby's Ralts, Rara, who was eventually returned to her true trainer. His first Pokémon is a Kecleon.

  • Badass Adorable
  • Big Damn Heroes: In ORAS his Altaria catches Ruby when he is thrown into the air by Rayquaza.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Has green hair, a green outfit, and green Pokémon! All six of them, not to mention he was important in waking Rayquaza! It's never commented on in the manga itself, but the tradition is carried on in the webcomic Pokémon-X, which flanderizes it into an incredible obsession with Pokémon that have ANY green at all on them. This is subverted in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire where he has both an Altaria and a Magnezone, two Pokémon with no green on them.
    • This was to mark that Wally is the supposed third hero representing "Emerald" for the RS saga but the writers decided to just make a new character actually named Emerald midway. At least they still gave Wally some plot related action.
  • Dragon Rider: Straightest example here. He has a Flygon.
  • Handicapped Badass: The kid appears to have an awful respiratory illness, and it gives him some complications near the end of the arc when he trained under Norman en route to Rayquaza. Does he let that stop him?
    • The ventilation mask he wears for said respiratory illness lets him breath in Rayquaza's ozone filled room.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Well, he was never really dying, but he was weak in body. But like it says above, he proves himself badass.

Gabby and Ty

(Maryanne and Tyler in the Chuang Yi version).

A reporter and her cameraman, these two ally themselves with Ruby and Sapphire early on, determined to find out who is responsible for reeking havoc in Hoenn.

  • Ascended Extra: From a couple of random battlers in the games to major supporting characters.
  • Dub Name Change: Were renamed to Mary Anne and Tyler in the Chuang Yi version.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Gabby, who is determined to figure out the dangers Team Magma and Aqua pose to Hoenn.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In ORAS, they were revisited by Absol and became determined to learn of the new danger threatening Hoenn. However, the pictures of the meteor they took were leaked to the media, letting everyone know that a meteor was going to collide in few days.

    Gym Leaders

Roxanne

Gym Leader of Rustboro City, Roxanne graduated from the Trainer's School and is thus very knowledgeable. As part of her gym challenge, any challengers must pass a written exam before battling her.

  • Adapted Out: Doesn't have her Geodude.
  • Badass Bookworm: She is a Gym Leader but is always carrying a book around. She even keeps her Poké Ball inside one!
  • Barrier Maiden: When Gym Leader are sent to stop Kyogre and Groudon from meeting each other, her Nosepass actually manages to block Groudon dead in its tracks and is only stopped by Courtney taking people hostage in order to make Roxanne throw away the battle.
  • Canon Foreigner: Graveler and Cradily.
  • Book Safe: She actually keeps Poké Balls inside that book of hers.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Specializes in Rock-type Pokémon.

Brawly

Leader of Dewford Town's gym, Brawly specializes in Fighting-types. He usually trains his Pokémon by surfing with them. He is apparently a disciple of Bruno's.

Wattson

A jolly old man who specializes in Electric-types, Wattson is pun-cracking Gym Leader of the Mauville Gym.

Flannery

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flannery_adventures.png

Fire-type using Gym Leader of Lavaridge Town, Flannery tried to protect the fires of Mt. Chimney from Team Aqua, but failed.

Norman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/norman_adventures.png

Ruby's father and a Normal-type specialist, Norman was just became Gym Leader of Petalburg City when Ruby ran away from home, for which he swore to hunt him down. Afterwards, he trains Wally to be a Pokémon trainer.

  • The Ace: Wattson recognizes him as the strongest Gym Leader in Hoenn.
  • Adapted Out: Lacks his second Slaking and Linoon.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Given how kind he is in the games and anime, it can be a shocker to see Norman be such a stern disciplinarian.
  • Back from the Dead: He is revived when Celebi takes Ruby and Sapphire to a slightly different timeline at the end of the Ruby & Sapphire chapter.
  • Calling the Young Man Out:
    • After his battle with Ruby in the Weather Institute, he chews him out for running away from home and tells Ruby that he better finish what he started.
    • In the ORAS arc, he once again chastises Ruby for acting rashly, telling him that such act would hurt those closest to him.
  • Canon Foreigner: A pair of Slakoth.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Unfortunately, forcibly controlling Rayquaza kills him.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: His death is relatively peaceful. However, his body being set ablaze by Maxie in front of his son is not. He thankfully gets better thanks to a Cosmic Retcon.
  • Dragon Rider: Wally's Flygon was originally his.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: Subverted. Ruby assumes that his father is dismissive of his desire to compete in contests, which leads to Ruby running away the day their family moved to Hoenn. Turns out Norman was always going to let him go. While Norman admits he doesn't see the appeal in contests and wants Ruby to take part in regular battles, he acknowledges it's his decision on what he wants to do with his life.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He knows awakening Rayquaza will kill him, he still do it to protect his son.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Yes, he's far from the nicest dad, but he genuinely loves his son and becomes supportive of Wally's wish to be a Trainer later on.
  • Non-Elemental: Specializes in Normal-type Pokémon.
  • Olympus Mons: He awakens and controls Rayquaza in order to deal with the Groudon and Kyogre crisis.
  • Parents as People: He does care for Ruby and eventually accepts Ruby's decision to pursue Pokémon Contests as opposed to battling, but that doesn't mean he will go easy on Ruby and he is understandably very upset when Ruby runs away from home.
  • The Scapegoat: Taking the blame of accidentally freeing Rayquaza, which was indirectly caused by Ruby.
  • Took a Third Option: When the Gym Leaders are deciding on which stance adopt regarding Team Aqua and Magma, he just leave as he recognizes that both groups are equally shady.
  • Super-Strength: He can crush a phone with his BARE HANDS. And judging by his wife's reaction he does this regularly. It comes in handy when he and Ruby are subject to a Literal Cliff Hanger.

Winona

Supervisor of the Hoenn Gym Leaders much like Erika is of Kanto's, Winona is the Fortree City Gym Leader. She specializes in Flying-types.

  • Action Girl: The most powerful female Gym Leader in Hoenn.
  • Adapted Out: Doesn't have her Tropius, Swellow or Pelipper.
  • Amicable Exes: She was in a relationship with Wallace but they had a falling out before the story's events, though they have no problems working together.
  • Blow You Away: Specializes in Flying-type Pokémon.
  • Canon Foreigner: Masquerain and Beautifly.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: She easily loses her second battle with Sapphire thanks to Sapphire having Troppy, Phado and Rono attack Masquerain, Beautifly and Swablu with super effective Aerial Aces and a Rock Blast.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: As she reveals to Sapphire at the beginning of Emerald, the reason of her breaking with Wallace was that he refused the Champion position in order to stay with her out of love, and she took the fact that he stays by her side despite being vastly stronger as a burden.
  • Hostage Situation: During the climax of Ruby & Sapphire, she is defeated and taken hostage by Archie and Maxie to force Wallace to surrender.
  • Maybe Ever After: With Wallace. While Wallace has always been clear regarding his remaining feelings for her, Sapphire's teasing at the start of Emerald imply that she still carries a torch for him.

Tate & Liza

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_o6fctctomd1rgvmfqo1_1280.png
Twins who share the title of Gym Leader of Mossdeep City, Tate and Liza act as the guardians of Mt. Pyre. Afterwards, they help train Ruby and Sapphire for their battle with Groudon and Kyogre.

Wallace

A contest master and water specialist, Wallace was originally the region champion, but gave it up so he could be closer to Winona the Gym Leader of Sootopolis City. He take Ruby under his wing and later took the title of Champion again during the final battle in Hoenn.

  • Adapted Out: Not him but his Milotic. What is arguably his ace is nowhere to be found here likely in order to make place for Ruby and Feefee's relationship. He also lacks his Emerald Team as well.
  • Amicable Exes: He and Winona were in a relationship but they had a falling out before the story's events, though they have no problems working together.
  • Badass Boast: When he take the Champion's Cape and face Archie and Maxie.
Wallace: If you recognize this cloak, there's no need to spell my name. If you cannot recognize this cloak, you're not fit to know my name!
  • Canon Foreigner: A Clamperl.
  • Demoted to Extra: Just one of the many people who shows up in the climax of ORAS.
  • Gratuitous English: All of his Pokémon have classic English names such as Elizabeth and Phillip.
  • Instant Fan Club: He had 4 girls that dressed like him and followed wherever he goes until Ruby essentially took their place.
  • Making a Splash: Specializes in Water-type Pokémon.
  • Maybe Ever After: With Winona. While Wallace has always been clear regarding his remaining feelings for her, Sapphire's teasing and her reaction to said teasings at the start of Emerald imply that she still carry a torch for him.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: His acceptance of the role of Champion and confrontation with Archie and Maxie is as awesome as it can be. However, they force him to stand down by threatening Winona's life and giving him a brutal beatdown once he complies.
  • The Nicknamer: One of the few characters outside of the 'Dex Holders to nickname his team. French names, even.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Normally a very friendly person, but you do not want him angry at you.
  • Stripperiffic: His outfit in ORAS. It's so bad that it's never fully shown — it's always mostly covered by other characters or by being off-panel.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Does this to Ruby after he lashes out at his Feebas following his lost in a contest. Immediately afterward, Wallace himself gets this from Swimmer Jack, who thinks Wallace goes too far in calling out Ruby.

Juan

Wallace's mentor and the previous Sootopolis Gym Leader as well as a Water-type specialist. He takes the position again when Wallace decides to take up the Champion position once more. He trains Ruby and Sapphire, both physically and mentally, for the final battle.

  • Adapted Out: Lacks most of his team aside from Kingdra and Luvdisc.
  • Canon Foreigner: A second Luvdisc.
  • Gratuitous French: Put various French words into his sentences from time to time.
  • Making a Splash: Specializes in Water-type Pokémon.
  • Old Master: Not incredibly old but he was Wallace’s mentor and did retire from running the Sootopolis Gym.

    Hoenn League

Steven Stone

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/steven_adventures.png
The current Hoenn League Champion and steel-type specialist, who normally spends his time searching for rare stones. He is tasked with awakening the three Regis to help stop the battle between Kyogre and Groudon.

  • Adapted Out: His sole member of his team from the games is Metagross.
  • Back from the Dead: He sacrifices his life to awaken and control the three Regis, but Celebi revives him later.
  • Canon Foreigner: Beldum and Metang.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Forcibly controlling the Regis to seal off Groudon and Kyogre's fight from the rest of Hoenn kills him.
  • The Cameo: Appears as the previous owner of the estate Platinum purchases in the beginning of the Platinum arc.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: Specializes in Steel-type Pokémon.
  • If I Do Not Return: He gives Wallace his position as Champion before going off to awaken the Regis. He already knowed he would die because of it.
  • Olympus Mons: He awakens the Regis at the climax of Ruby and Sapphire.
  • Super Mode: He can use Mega Evolution.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Despite being the former Hoenn Champion, he had a hard time fighting Zinnia off. It was revealed that this was because he had his Metagross give his life force away months ago, and it hadn't fully recovered yet.

Sidney

One of the Hoenn Elite Four. Specializes in Dark-types.

Phoebe

One of the Hoenn Elite Four. Specializes in Ghost-types.

One of the Hoenn Elite Four. Specializes in Dragon-types.

    Hoenn Battle Frontier

Todd Snap

A photographer who follows Emerald on his Battle Frontier challenge.

  • Mythology Gag: At the end of Emerald, Professor Oak sends him off to the island from Pokémon Snap to complete the goal from it.
  • No Indoor Voice: He shouts an awful lot of his lines.
  • No Name Given: His name is never actually given. His name actually is revealed to be Todd in Pokéspedia.
  • The Watson: In regards to Emerald's mission and the rules of the Battle Frontier facilities.

Scott

The owner of the Battle Frontier, he can recognize a trainer's potential. Often acts in his own interest in order to make his Battle Frontier a success.

  • The Chessmaster: Sort of. He knew all about Jirachi, Emerald and Guile, but kept silent about it to all of the Frontier Brains in order to "help them get stronger".
  • Non-Action Guy: He's not a Pokémon trainer.
  • Red Herring: Scott acts awfully cagey, is never around when Guile Hideout attacks, and is certainly up to something. He's not Guilt Hideout. He does know about Jirachi, he just didn't say anything because he didn't think the Frontier Brains would be much help either way.

Noland

One of the seven Frontier Brains, also known as Factory Head Noland. He is in charge of the Battle Factory, and also takes care of all the rental Pokémon used in the Battle Frontier facilities.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: His specialty as the Frontier Brain of Knowledge.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: He uses a rental Mawile in his battle with Emerald and keeps him as his own.
  • MacGuffin: The Jirachi report in his possession, which he eventually surrenders in return for Anabel's safety.
  • Non-Elemental: His trio of Smeargle
  • Power Copying: Catches a trio of Smeargle after noticing the Painter Pokémon could copy Jirachi's Wish knows via Sketch.
  • Put on a Bus: He gets hospitalized by Guild Hideout early in the arc, where he's unable to aid Emerald with the rest of the Frontier Brains until he challenges the Battle Tower.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: His Smeargle never show up again after they use Wish so Noland can use the bright flash of light to determine where Jirachi would appear via the Battle Frontier's security cameras.

Lucy

Also known as Pike Queen Lucy, she is in charge of the Battle Pike, and favors snake-like Pokémon.

Brandon

A rough, adventurous man in charge of the Battle Pyramid, he is also known as Pyramid King Brandon. Has a particular dislike for Emerald at first.

Greta

Arena Tycoon Greta is the Frontier Brain for the Battle Arena.

  • Adapted Out: Doesn't have Gengar and Breloom.
  • Death by Irony: Refuses to lose by assessment. She loses that way.
  • Genki Girl: She just can't seem to sit still, ever.
  • Super-Strength: It's the only way to explain how she can easily carry Emerald's Sceptile and Dusclops on her back at the same time.

Tucker

The flamboyant Dome Ace of the Battle Dome, he also harbors a grudge against Emerald after their confrontation on the first day.

Spenser

A mysterious tattooed man also known as Palace Maven Spenser. His age belies his skill as one of the Frontier Brains.

  • Adapted Out: Lacks his Arcanine and Suicune.
  • Don't Touch It, You Idiot!: His backstory. Many years ago, he was friends with the old couple who live on Mt. Pyre. One day while they were out of the room, he decided to touch the Blue Orb. Big mistake.
  • Evil Old Folks: Averted: he appears to be this at first, but he just turns out to be a person who has been in contact with Kyogre's orb.
  • The Power of Trust: What he explicitly stated as his facility's specialty.
  • Red Herring: Once suspected by Ruby and Sapphire to be Guile Hideout's identity, until Latios proved otherwise.

Anabel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_2b687dc287b489611fd6de1f92c0e918_29d56aac_1280.png
The Salon Maiden of the Battle Tower and The Leader of the seven Frontier Brains.

  • Adapted Out: Her Lucario, Entei and Latios that she uses in the Battle Tree in the games never appear in the SM arc.
  • Bifauxnen: She has a very androgynous, boyish-looking appearance. In the SM arc, she has a more feminine appearance.
  • Boring, but Practical: Has Raikou use Thunder Shock, typically the weakest of electrical moves. However, she also notes that while it is the weakest, it's a lot easier to control than other, more flashier electrical moves. Plus, it's being used by Raikou, so it's actually far stronger than usual.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Guile Hideout mind controls her when he takes control of the Battle Tower.
  • The Bus Came Back: Returns in the SM arc now as a member of the International Police.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Purple hair and eyes.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Like in the games, she believes in innate talent and is not shy about telling people if they don't have it.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Her Raikou is nowhere to be seen in the SM arc in spite of her appearance in the Battle Tree confirming she still has it in the games.

Jirachi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jirachi_adventures.png

A Pokémon that Emerald sought after. Main Legendary of the sixth chapter, Emerald.

  • Death from Above: Knows Doom Desire.
  • The Empath: It only grants a heart's true desires, meaning if you're lying or if you're unsure of yourself, it won't help at all.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: Steel is its primary type.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: The Third Eye on its stomach.
  • Make a Wish: It can grant three wishes, one for each wish tag on its head. Guile Hideout uses the first one to summon a giant Kyogre-like monster, Emerald uses the second one to restore the petrified Dex Holders and Scott uses the third one to attract at least 100,000 visitors to the Battle Frontier on the opening day.
  • Psychic Powers: Psychic is its secondary type.
  • Reality Warper: The wishes it grants seem to extend to this level of power such as Creating a giant sea monster out of nothing and restoring people who have been turned to stone.

Antagonists

    Team Magma

Maxie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_o6fctctomd1rgvmfqo1_1280_6.png
The Leader of Team Magma, he hoped to use Groudon for his plans.

  • Adaptational Villainy: While it's not quite to the extreme as Archie's case, this version of Maxie is still much more ruthless than his game counterpart and ends up becoming outright psychotic up until his return in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.
  • A Father to His Men: Unlike Archie, Maxie treats his subordinates with respect.
  • Ax-Crazy: Post-Sanity Slippage, along with Archie.
  • Benevolent Boss: Honestly, Archie set the bar low enough for him to be this.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Archie in Ruby and Sapphire. Turns into Big Bad Duumvirate midway through the arc.
  • Co-Dragons: With Archie in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, doubling as Evil Duo.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He and Archie are probably among the most underhanded antagonists. They are also among the most successful because of this.
    • They murdered Courtney by burying her alive while she was in possession of the Red Orb to prevent her from stopping the fight between Kyogre and Groudon.
    • After being separated from Kyogre and Groudon, they simply waited for three weeks in the Cave of Origin for the dust to settle, take back the Orbs and start their whole plan all over again while their opponents were tired or dead.
    • Norman died from exhaustion after controlling Rayquaza, but he still set his body ablaze to be sure.
    • They take Winona's hostage in order to make Wallace, the most dangerous obstacle in their plans throw the fight.
    • Feefee evolving into Milotic gave Ruby a Heroic Second Wind? They already had the Orbs and no reason to fight, so they just throw all their Pokémons to stall Ruby and Sapphire, called it a day and tried to run away while promising to come back with Kyogre and Groudon.
  • Demoted to Dragon: In Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, something called for Archie and him to protect the world (referred as an unknown voice). The identity of this voice is not yet established but he and Archie work for this entity.
  • Evil Redhead: He's got a set of red hair to match his red outfit.
  • Friendly Enemy: By the climax of Ruby and Sapphire, he and Archie became this. While they still plan to fight each other to determine the fate of the world, they decided to fight AFTER getting rid of everyone opposing them.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire he and Archie return to try stop the meteoroid from destroying the planet. Also, they seems to have no ulterior motives behind their mission. But he still harbors a nasty side and will do anything necessary to complete his mission.
  • Kick the Dog: After killing Norman, he proceeds to set his corpse on fire and taunt Ruby with his father's corpse.
  • Kill It with Fire: His signature Mon is a Houndoom, which are renowned for the ferocity of their flames. Sure enough, Maxie has his Houndoom light Norman’s corpse on fire.
  • Olympus Mons: He controls Groudon.
  • Not Quite Dead: It is implied that Archie killed him in the fight over Eternity and Instant but in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire it is revealed that he merely lost his body and was sent to the Distortion World and he returns with a new body.
    • Killed Off for Real: However, his temporary body eventually runs out and he disappears for good.
    • Face Death with Dignity: In his last moments in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, he and Archie calmly explain the circumstances of their return to Blaise and Amber. When he finally disappears, his last words to Archie is to acknowledge Archie's proposition to work together again if they will be resurrected a second time and to Blaise, to protect the world.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Him and Archie perfectly fits this in the RS arc, him wearing red and being the headstrong one while Archie wears blue and is collected. This is reversed in the ORAS arc.
  • Sanity Slippage: Goes from Well-Intentioned Extremist to "let's destroy everything just because" along with Archie. Granted, both of them lacked the will to control the Red and Blue Orbs, and they were driven mad by their power. This was completely reversed in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire where he Took a Level in Badass, is a Well-Intentioned Extremist again and had a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Super Mode: Has access to Mega Evolution. Also Primal Reversion when controlling Groudon.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In Ruby & Sapphire, Maxie tried to control Groudon with the Red Orb but was controlled instead. In Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, it is the other way around and he has also recovered from his Sanity Slippage.
  • True Companions: Ironically with Archie in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.

Courtney

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/300px_courtney_adventures.png

(Marge in the Chuang Yi version)

One of the three Three Fires, Courtney prefers to use straight forward ''brutal'' force. Develops an... interesting relationship with Ruby over time.

  • Ascended Extra: She has a very small role in the original games and doesn't appear at all in Emerald, yet has the most development of all the Team Aqua/Magma members in the manga.
  • Back from the Dead: She, Norman and Steven are revived when Celebi sends Ruby and Sapphire to a slightly different timeline.
  • Enemy Mine: Against Groudon, since her desire for seeing destruction had been satisfied.
  • Green Thumb: Grass is not her specialty type, but she is very knowledgeable about berries and plants to the point she can use them as tools and weapons. After Groudon and Kyogre are dealt with, she goes back to tending to them once more.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Though at first she only assists Ruby in order to stop Groudon, she ultimately has one in the end.
  • May–December Romance: It's quite easy to see her relationship with Ruby as the subtle beginnings of this.
  • Mysterious Past: She used to be a Coordinator and a well-adjusted person. It is never explained why she went from that to the cynical and ruthless pyromaniac she is now.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After teaming up with Ruby to stop Groudon and Kyogre she is killed by Maxie and Archie. Subverted in that she is brought back in the end.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She mentioned to Ruby that she went out of her way to learn everything about him by the time they meet again on Mirage Island.

Tabitha

(Mitch in the Chuang Yi version)

Another of the Three Fires, this burly man specializes in putting people to sleep with his Torkoal's smoke.

  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • He gets scared of Archie's Kick the Dog moments, and even saves the Aqua Elite Mook that attacked him when Archie left both of them for dead.
    • Even though he failed, you have to give the guy credit for assisting Flannery in attempting to revive Mt. Chimney after Team Aqua killed it.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He is seen visiting the Lavaridge hot springs as a regular citizen of Hoenn at the end of the arc.
  • Sanity Slippage: He goes insane since he attempted to control Groudon, even if it was for a brief moment. Thankfully, he apparently got better, as he is seen in the epilogue visiting the Lavaridge hot springs.

Blaise

(Mack in the Chuang Yi version)

Third member of the Three Fires. Only appears in this manga.

  • The Bus Came Back: He is the only member of the original Team Magma admins to return in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.
  • Canon Foreigner: He doesn't have a game counterpart.
  • The Determinator: Even after his leader was gone, he kept tabs on the Red and Blue Orb for 4 years until they finally started heading to Hoenn.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Turns to the side of good in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire after Maxie tells him to protect the planet in his Last Words.
  • Master of Illusion: What he's most known for, where he uses his fires to create hallucinations to freak his opponents out.
  • Super Mode: He gains access to Mega Evolution.
  • Take Up My Sword: He inherits Maxie’s Camerupt, Key Stone and Mega Glasses after Maxie disappears.
  • Villain Team-Up: He and Amber team up to revive Groudon and Kyogre in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.

    Team Aqua

Archie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_o6fctctomd1rgvmfqo1_1280_1_8.png
The Leader of Team Aqua, he hoped to use Kyogre for his plans.

  • Adaptational Villainy: This version of Archie is almost unrecognizable from his game counterpart, possessing none of his good traits (they end up being false) and behaving much more straightly evil. Rectified in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, where he begins acting like his game self due to some Distortion World shenanigans.
  • Ax-Crazy: Post-Sanity Slippage, along with Maxie.
  • Bad Boss: His mooks are pretty much tools to him, in a sharp contrast to Maxie; he's willing to kill them even if they've done their parts.
  • Beard of Evil: He sports a pretty impressive one.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Maxie in Ruby and Sapphire.
  • Co-Dragons: With Maxie in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He and Maxie are probably among the most underhanded antagonists.
    • Norman died from exhaustion after controlling Rayquaza, but Maxie still set his body ablaze to be sure.
    • They take Winona's hostage in order to make Wallace, the most dangerous obstacle in their plans throw the fight.
    • Feefee evolving into Milotic gave Ruby a Heroic Second Wind ? They already had the Orbs and no reason to fight, so they just throw all their Pokémons to stall Ruby and Sapphire, called it a day and tried to run away while promising to come back with Kyogre and Groudon.
  • Demoted to Dragon: In Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, something called for Maxie and him to protect the world (referred as an unknown voice). The identity of this voice is not yet established but he and Maxie works for this entity.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Unlike in the games, where he is genuinely Affably Evil. He seems to have lost this trait in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.
  • Face Death with Dignity: In his last moments in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, he and Maxie calmly explain the circumstances of their return to Blaise and Amber. When he finally disappears, his last words to Maxie are to ask him for working together again if they will be resurrected a second time (to which Maxie agrees to) and to Amber, to protect the world.
  • Friendly Enemy: By the climax of Ruby and Sapphire, he and Maxie became this. While they still plan to fight each other to determine the fate of the world, they decided to fight AFTER getting rid of everyone opposing them.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire he and Maxie return to try stop the meteoroid from destroying the planet. Also, they seems to have no ulterior motives behind their mission. But, like Maxie, he still harbors a nasty side and will do anything necessary to complete his mission.
  • Kick the Dog: Archie quite literally kicks away and stomps on Mimi and proceeds to mock its dying body. Poor Mimi.
  • Not Quite Dead: It is implied that he died after he disappeared in the end of the end of the Emerald chapter but in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire it is revealed that he merely lost his body and was sent to the Distortion World and he returns with a new body. However, his temporary body eventually runs out and he disappears for good.
  • Olympus Mons: He controls Kyogre.
  • Same Character, But Different: His personality in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire now resembles how Maxie once was and vice-versa for Maxie as well. It's to a point where even Blaise and Amber has trouble recognizing them. This is justified in that they were fused as one while in the Distortion World.
  • Sanity Slippage: See what happened to Maxie. Same thing here. Also same thing for the reversal like Maxie.
  • Super Mode: Has access to Mega Evolution. Also Primal Reversion when controlling Kyogre.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Like with Maxie, Archie goes from being controlled and driven mad by Kyogre in Ruby & Sapphire to controlling it and remaining sane in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He has absolutely no problem abandoning his underlings, even if they did their jobs.

Shelly

(Angie in the Chuang Yi version)

One of Team Aqua's Sub-leaders of Sea Scheme.

  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: She abandons Matt in the end, leaving him to drown, which would be a Karmic Death for him considering what he attempted to do to Sapphire and Flannery earlier.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Once her Ludicolo's Nature Power is sealed by Flannery's Vulpix, she hightails it out of there.

Matt

(Ark in the Chuang Yi version)

One of Team Aqua's Sub-leaders of Sea Scheme.

Amber

One of Team Aqua's Sub-leaders of Sea Scheme. Only appears in this manga.

    Deoxys

Deoxys

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_o84s0mculv1rgvmfqo1_1280.png
Two Pokémon mutated from a space virus. They were encountered by Team Rocket and were used to help Giovanni find his missing son. Main Legendary of the fifth chapter, FireRed & LeafGreen.

  • Big Bad: Organism No. 1 is this for the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire chapter, being the cause of the meteoroid threatening to destroy the world.
  • Combat Tentacles: Its arms can transform into two tentacles. It uses them to stab Mewtwo in the chest.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Organism No. 1 gets one by Ruby and Sapphire using Mega Rayquaza where it gets defeated by one Dragon Ascent.
  • Healing Factor: Know Recover.
  • Humanoid Abomination: A pair of alien viruses with an alien morality, that nonetheless take humanoid forms (and can even use opposable thumbs in Normal Forme).
  • I Will Find You: No. 2 took off at the end of FireRed & LeafGreen to try and find its sibling. It hasn't been seen since.
  • Me's a Crowd: They can create clones of itself.
  • Multiform Balance: Attack Form, Defense Form, Speed Form and Normal Form.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Justified. It never really wanted to fight Red, essentially his "father" by blood donation, but the only language it understood was fighting. When the situation is explained and he learns proper ways of talking, he helps the Dex Holders save the airship and the town.
  • Power Crystal: The core in its body. Serves as its weak point.
  • Psychic Powers: They are Psychic-type.
  • Thicker Than Water: As it turns out, Organism No. 2 was cloned from Red's blood, which is why it kept trying to find him and why Red suddenly had a strange feeling in his presence. He fought him because fighting was the only language it knew. When it finally learned how to communicate, it became much more friendly.
  • Uncertain Doom: Organism No. 1 is offhandedly mentioned to have been "disposed of" by Team Rocket once they were done with it, but No. 2 was convinced it was out there somewhere and left to find it. It wasn't until the OR/AS chapters that it turned out Team Rocket had just thrown it away.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Organism No. 2 is defeated and caught by Giovanni, but only because it was exhausted from its battle with Red (where despite handily losing, Red was able to hit its core once). Furthermore, Giovanni used a Poké Ball specially tuned to be more successful in catching Deoxys.

    Guile Hideout

Guile Hideout

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/250px_guile_hideout.png
A mysterious armored knight who seeks Jirachi at Hoenn's Battle Frontier for unknown purposes.

  • Blessed with Suck: Guile Hideout's armor Eternity grants him immortality and stops his body from decaying. Awesome, right? However, he can't take it off, lest the decaying starts again and he'd be erased from existence.
  • Call-Back: To the Masked Man. A Canon Character All Along villain with an old man as a Red Herring. In addition, Noland gathers some metal samples from him, just like what Gold did at Ilex Forest.
  • Canon Character All Along: He's actually Archie.
  • Cool Sword: Instant has the power to reflect back any attack with a swipe, making it the perfect offense and defense.
  • Eviler than Thou: Sird forces him and Maxie into a fight to the death for armor that will stop their bodies from decaying. Maxie is noticeably terrified as they turn on each other, as the two had basically become Fire-Forged Friends during their Sanity Slippage, while Archie looks disturbingly calm. Archie wins...
  • Evolution Power-Up: Averted when his Surskit turns into a Masquerain when sent out alongside Walrein due to all the experience he got over the course of the arc...but the Pond Skater Pokémon is grabbed and thrown into the ground by Poli without even doing anything.
  • Mythology Gag: His plans are a lot like Butler's in Pokémon: Jirachi: Wish Maker.
  • Making a Splash: His specialty.
  • Returning Big Bad: Is actually Archie, a member of the Big Bad Ensemble from the Ruby and Sapphire arc.
  • Sanity Slippage: Even worse than before, as now he just wants to destroy everyone in his way and rule the world.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Archie is even worse than before. He loves to call everyone "worthless trash" and will manipulate them as such. He also has a completely selfish plan to Take Over the World compared to his pre-Sanity Slippage Well-Intentioned Extremist plan.

Zinnia

A member of the Draconid Tribe seeking to stop the disaster of the meteorite coming towards the Planet, she attacks Ruby, Sapphire, and Devon in order to steal the Mega Stones needed.
  • Adaptational Karma: Zinnia in the games did not have her stomach impaled by Rayquaza and hyper-beamed at point-blank range.
  • Anti-Villain: Despite her Jerkass Troll attitude, she is ultimately a Well-Intentioned Extremist who wants to save the world and has a solid reason behind why she became the way she is.
  • Big Bad: Appears to be this for the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire chapter, but ends up a subversion, as her goal is actually to save the world, even if she does bad things to accomplish it.
  • Breath Weapon: Her Salamence and Goodra both have this power.
  • Connected All Along: The Salamence of Ruby's and Sapphire's backstory is actually hers. Thus making Zinnia indirectly responsible for the drastic changes of personality of the two Hoenn Dex Holders, and also for the whole mess with Rayquaza which Norman took the blame for. In addition, her infiltrating Team Magma was what allowed them to learn of the orbs far before Team Aqua ever would.
  • The Chosen Wannabe: She believes that she'll be the one to ride Rayquaza into space to destroy the meteorite. This causes her to endanger Ruby and Sapphire, the actual Chosen Ones, which enrages Rayquaza to the point that it impales her with its tail and blasts her into the sea.
  • Death Seeker: Her mission to destroy the meteorite is a suicide mission, which she knows and is even hopeful for since it means she will be Together in Death with Aster.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite playing a part in messing up Ruby and Sapphire's lives, the two of them rather easily forgive and befriend her once she learns the error of her ways.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She joins the good guys in the end once she realizes that the course of action she has taken is the wrong one.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: By Rayquaza after she offends it when she endangered Ruby and Sapphire. Thankfully, she gets better.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Once her backstory and true motivations are revealed.
  • Jerkass: She's a rather unpleasant person and takes great delight being so.
  • Morality Pet: Her Whismur, Aster, who is named after her predecessor / big sister figure.
  • Playing Both Sides: She worked with both Team Aqua and Team Magma, telling them both how to summon their respective legendaries.
  • Rejected Apology: When Mr. Stone gives an apology for Rayquaza and what happened to Aster, Zinnia just thinks he wants forgiveness and isn't actually remorseful.
  • Troll: She loves to mess with Ruby, Sapphire, Steven, and just about anyone she can.
