"... I need to defeat those who are stronger than me! Or else, Nothing will change!!"

The Protagonist of the series. Isagi is a second-year student who previously played as a forward for the Ichinan High School football team. Although he dreamed of becoming a world-class striker and leading the Japanese national team to a World Cup victory, failing to lead his team to the national football tournament made him lose hope of ever achieving his goals. That is - until he was chosen to take part in Blue Lock; a mysterious football project where one must throw out everything they had learned previously about Team Spirit in order to become players that only care about pushing themselves forward.

Now, immersed in a ruthless environment and surrounded by dozens of other players with the same goals as him, Isagi decides to chase his dreams once again to try and become the best egotistical striker in the world. Throughout his journey through Blue Lock, Isagi continues to better himself as a football player while developing many new friendships and intense rivalries.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Isagi chooses to play for Germany's Bastard München team. Along with believing that said team will help him develop the best, it's also the team that his football hero, Noel Noa, plays for.

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Having noticed some oddities surrounding Kuon's "mistakes" midway through the Team Z vs. Team W match, Isagi's the one to question Kuon face-to-face if the latter has betrayed the team. Isagi's answered almost immediately by the Wanima brothers that this was indeed the case.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: As he lacks more specific techniques such as Bachira's dribbling or Kunigami's Physique, what makes Isagi stand out inside Blue Lock is his "Spatial Awareness" and analysis of both his opponents and teammates. Many of his biggest moments in games come from careful observation of other players and predictions of what is going to happen during a particular play.
  • Backstory: A brief flashback is seen of Isagi as a young kid watching football on his home television, and seeing how great of a player, Noel Noa, is at the sport. This played a part in Isagi wanting to one day become a pro football player just like Noa.
  • Bash Brothers:
    • Ever since the two of them managed to take down Kira together in the Tag entrance game, he and Bachira are usually seen practicing and playing football together all throughout their time at Blue Lock.
    • He's this with Nagi during the Second Selection where Nagi desires to play with Isagi after the two of them develop a friendly rivalry from the Team Z vs. Team V match.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Isagi's personalities off- and on-field are very contrasting, to say the least. He's usually one of Blue Lock's friendlier personalities (though that doesn't say much), but when he's playing football? Oh boy. From all his comments to Barou during the Second Selection 3v3 game to his threats towards Kaiser and Yukimiya in the Neo Egoist League against Manshine, Isagi just seems like a different person.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Says this in chapter 30 towards Nagi after the latter tried to give Isagi a "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
Shut the fuck up, genius. I'm on a roll right now.
  • Book Dumb: In the extra's from the anime's first episode, Isagi's parents mention how Isagi is so soccer-focused that his grades fell short because of it.
  • Boring, but Practical: Isagi's Direct Shot is a literal straight shot into the goal at high speed. Add on to Isagi's analytical skills and once he's in position, almost nothing is able to stop it. Other than its speed and precision, nothing else really stands out about it. That being said, if Naruhaya's attempts at copying Isagi's Direct Shot showed us, it's a lot harder than it looks to pull off.
  • Call to Adventure: He's the first one to start running towards the entrance of Blue Lock after being convinced by Ego's words to become the greatest egotistical football forward in the world. The other 299 follow just moments after.
  • Challenge Seeker: Isagi quite literally becomes this after Ego introduces the concept of "challenge-centered focus" being the key to achieving "Flow" before the game against Japan's U-20 team.
  • Character Development: Jinpachi Ego's ideals of what a striker should be, mainly through the concept of "ego", deeply influence Isagi, whose initial team-oriented beliefs ended up making him lose his chance of going to Nationals. The idea that a striker should be an egoist changes not only his view towards football but his play style, making him have much more of a drive towards creating goals for himself and not only for his teammates.
  • The Chessmaster: This is ultimately how Isagi puts his talents to use - while his Direct Shot is very much a Situational Sword, his use of Metavision combined with his knowledge of how both his opponents and allies play means that if he plays his cards right, he can cause that ideal situation to happen.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Not exactly a sequel, but the writer of this manga also wrote Kamisama no Iutoori Ni which also centered on a soccer player. Yasuto Akashi and Yoichi Isagi are fundamentally different in that Yasuto is all about helping others and self sacrifice. Meanwhile Yoichi's arc is learning about how to be selfish and egotistical. While Yasuto was going through death games, the potential deaths of careers at Blue Lock somewhat makes it similar. How the two debut and develop is similar but also remarkably different. Isagi debuts a nice, dedicated player who passes the ball under the belief football is played with a team. Akashi meanwhile lets his teammate attempt to score a goal because Akashi was scared and pretended his foot was hurt once his teammate asked him if it was, seeing that as an out from the pressure. Isagi still has football desires but Akashi has been trying to distance himself from the sport. Akashi starts out in his series a coward but as time goes on is more defined by his desire to help others, being called selfless multiples. Isagi starts the series someone who wants to win, but as the series goes on becomes more egotistical, confrontational, and selfish.
  • Determinator:
    • Isagi's been told all his life that team play is the way to play football. However, after being scouted by Junichi Ego to come train at Blue Lock, and hearing Ego's opening It's All About Me speech, Isagi becomes greatly determined to go down the path of becoming the greatest egotistical forward striker in the world. Especially since he had already experienced the failure that team play brought him from losing 2-0 in the Saitama Prefecture High School Finals.
    • If there's even the slightest possibility of winning and getting better, you can be sure that Isagi will chase after it. Even if he's 5-0 down and there's three minutes left in the clock. Even if he doesn't have an unique "weapon" like his teammates. Or even if he's playing against the the five best strikers in the world.
  • Establishing Character Moment: After hearing Ego's speech, he's the first to start running to join Blue Lock; showing that he's perhaps the most determined to become the best egotistical striker.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Isagi's eyes adopt his puzzle piece motif when he's using Metavision.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Isagi has a knack for making these - though that can be attributed to his dream of becoming the world's best striker and Blue Lock's inherent competitive environment.
    • Meguru Bachira, as one of his first friends inside Blue Lock, quickly becomes a rival to Isagi once he's stolen by Rin during the Second Selection. During later events, Isagi's development and the fact he had seemingly outgrown Bachira as a rival is what sparks the latter's ego-fueled attack during their Second Selection match against each other.
    • Rensuke Kunigami, as someone who also became fast friends with Isagi, fits this trope particularly once the Second Selection starts, considering he's left behind by both Bachira and Isagi when they form a team with Nagi.
    • Hyomi Chigiri, as someone that Isagi helped out of being a Broken Bird during the match against Team W, and became friends and rivals towards one another from then on.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He's not that big of a presence on the field, at least compared to some of his physically stronger rivals. But it becomes obvious as other players get to know him better, Isagi is absolutely dangerous on the field, especially when he knows what he's dealing with. His analytical abilities allow him to stay one step ahead of his rivals and support his teammates, and while his Direct Shot isn't anything spectacular, once he's in position, that's all he needs. The best example is during the Second Selection during his second 3-on-3. Out of a group involving Reo, Chiguri, Kunigami, Nagi, and Barou, it's Isagi who dominated the game.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: He dishes this out towards Chigiri during the match against Team W to try to help the latter get over his fear of reinjuring his healed ACL tear. It eventually works.
  • Goal in Life: To become a world-class pro football player that will lead the Japanese national team to victory at the World Cup.
  • Gut Feeling: A lot of Isagi's play-style relies on this where he will rely on his instincts to lead him to where he believes the best possible outcome on the football field will be.
  • Handshake Substitute: During the moment where he's befriending Kunigami following the game against Team X, they bump fist to hype each other up to win the next game.
  • The Heart: Literally and figuratively speaking, Isagi is the main foundation of Team Z due to his analytical skill and mind that allows him to read the field and he gradually develops to be one for the Blue Lock Eleven. This very fact is what got Sae, who initially believed that Japan's Football players as they were, are completely hopeless against the world, saying that Isagi may have what it takes to be the best striker to face the world at the end of the match against U-20.
Sae (To Rin): I was wrong. I thought Japan was unable to to ever give birth to any decent strikers. [..] He even managed to call forth your instincts. The one who's able to change this country's Football... is Yoichi Isagi. An egoist like that might have what it takes. Japan... can still change.
  • Heroic BSoD: Several times early on.
    • Has a bit of one at the beginning of the series where he breaks down into tears after his Ichinan football lost to Matsukaze Kukuo as the loss meant that he failed to move up to playing at Nationals. However, he quickly gets out of it as his spirits brighten back up when a letter comes in the mail claiming that Isagi's been scouted out by the JFA to take part in the Blue Lock player improvement project.
    • He has another one of these moments where he's left disappointed in himself after failing to become the foundation for Team Z due to his chokejob in front of the goal against Team X. Instead of taking on Baro and scoring the goal himself, he ended up passing it off to Kunigami, which he ended up taking a lot of heat as someone who wussed out in front of the goal, and left him feeling like he's a failure as a striker. He gets out of it after a friendly chat with Kunigami afterwards.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Greatly admired the German football player Noel Noa. In his younger years, Isagi would catch football games on TV in order to watch Noa play. Watching Noa's play is what influenced Isagi into wanting to be a pro football player just like him.
  • History Repeats: Isagi quickly realizes following the loss to Team X that he repeated the same mistake he made back during the loss against Kira's Matsukaze Kukuo football team where he chose to pass it during a crucial moment in front of the goal rather than have the courage or confidence to shoot the goal himself. Thus, Isagi realizes that he needs to develop when he's lacking in this department.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Isagi has big blue eyes and an easy-going, cheery demeanor that stands out among the harsher and more intense personalities inside the hyper-competitive Blue Lock project.
  • The Leader: By Chapter 15, which is shortly after he scored the winning goal against Team Y, it's shown that Isagi succeeded in becoming the foundation that Team Z works around. Even though he's arguably the worst player in Team Z at the time (only Igarashi being worse), Isagi's determination makes him a de facto leader among his teammates, normally through setting an example (such as being the first one to try and get extra training in) that pressures other players to step up and follow him. In Ego's words:
Jinpachi Ego: How could they not be fired up when the guy at the bottom passed them up?
  • Meaningful Name: The name Isagi (潔) means "undefiled, pure and righteous". Notably, the kanji's adjective form, "isagiyoi" (潔い), also means "sportsmanlike, manly and brave". Yoichi is made up of the words "world" (世) (Yo) and "one" (一) (ichi). Isagi Yoichi can therefore be interpreted as "World's No.1 Rightful," "World's No.1 Purest," or the most fitting by his given name alone, "World's Best."
  • My Greatest Failure: Early on, Isagi had two moments that hit him hard when he subconsciously chose team-play over shooting the goal himself.
    • At the start of the series, he took losing 2-0 at the High School Saitama Perfecture Finals against team Matsukaze Kukuo pretty hard as it meant that he missed the chance at making it to Nationals. Isagi's Ichinan team lost due to him choosing to pass to his teammate in front of the goal (who ended up missing by hitting the goal post) rather than take the shot himself to at least tie the game 1-1 and send it to extra kicks. However, Isagi gets a second shot to make it to Nationals after being scouted out by Junichi Ego to become one of his players at Blue Lock. It's also because of this failure that Isagi realizes that he needs to be the one confident enough to take the shot in front of the goal himself rather than pass it off to a teammate and hope that they score.
    • The other moment was the chokejob in front of the goal against Blue Lock's Team X. When Baro is able to make it back to help defend the goal for Team X, Isagi ends up passing it to Kunigami, who made the goal instead. The result is Isagi being labeled as a coward for wussing out at not being able to shoot the goal himself, and left Isagi feeling like he failed at both being a striker and becoming the foundation that the disorganized Team Z rallies behind.
  • Team Mom: Isagi is prone to holding this role off-field, since his affable nature lends itself well to the more difficult personalities in Blue Lock. In particular, one can see in the "Additional Time" segment of Episode 23, that he's the one who wakes up the always-sleeping Nagi, helps Chigiri with his frequent leg care and even supports Barou's extreme orderliness.
  • The Nicknamer: He thinks of Niko a "mophead" due to the latter's hairstyle.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Given their similar play-styles, Isagi pretty much tells this to Niko in the final moments of the Team Z vs. Team Y match due to Niko having a moment where he tried to pass it off to Okawa rather than taking the shot himself. Something that Isagi experienced before coming to Blue Lock that led him to going down the It's All About Me path.
  • Odd Friendship: His friendship with Bachira at Blue Lock is shaping up to be this. Isagi comes off relatively really normal while Bachira is a Cloudcuckoolander who takes about "monsters."
  • Oh, Crap!: Given that Isagi's the main character that the series mostly focuses on, you'll see him have this reaction a lot on the football field whenever something goes wrong, or the opponent outsmarts/out-duels him.
  • Power Levels: Starting from the Neo EGOIST League, power levels are introduced where football club sponsors around the world take part in an auction to bid on and finance the players that take part in Blue Lock. The higher the bid determining who the sponsors consider to be the strongest.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Bastard München vs. F.C. Barcha match, Isagi starts off with a ¥17,000,000 bid from Berserk Dortmund, who are said to be Bastard München's main rival in the German League.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Bastard München vs. Manshine City match, Isagi's bid is increased to ¥50,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Bastard München vs. Ubers match, Isagi's bid is increased to ¥150,000,000.
  • Rank Up: Out of 300 players during Blue Lock's First Selection, Isagi starts off ranked 299 out of 300.
    • In the First Selection: Isagi rises up to 274 following the Tag entrance game, but in actuality, he's still in the same spot as the only reason he went up was because of the 25 players who couldn't get past the Tag game. By chapter 15, he rises up to 265 (the highest of Team Z) thanks to the crucial goal that he scored that won them the match against Team Y.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Isagi is named Blue Lock's Rank 15.
  • Rivals Team Up: Does this often with Bachira due to their growing friendship ever since the Tag entrance game.
    • He had an unintentional team-up with Bachira during the Tag entrance game. Seeing Isagi not choose to eliminate the injured Igarashi was enough to convince Bachira that Isagi was someone only interested in going after the strong. Thus, he decides to team up with Isagi to take down someone strong. Bachira goes after Kira having deemed him as the strongest of Team Z, which he catches Kira off-guard by passing it to Isagi. Bachira's gamble paid off as Isagi chose to eliminate the strong Kira by kicking the ball into his face, making Kira the final "it" that loses the game. Isagi doesn't understand why Bachira gambled on a pass to him as Isagi not going along with it would have just left Bachira as the "it" and be eliminated, but Bachira just happily replies back that Isagi looked like someone that would take the shot.
  • The Rival: As the main character, Isagi develops a lot of rivalries amongst the other 299 strikers during his journey through Blue Lock.
    • He has a bit of this with Team Y's Niko as two strikers who utilize their field vision senses to act as the brains for the team. This especially becomes the case when Isagi catches on that the real player to watch out for on Team Y is Niko, which results in the two of them dueling throughout the rest of the Team Z vs. Team Y match.
    • He's this with Barou, with the latter developing an obsession towards the former, trying to steal the ball from Isagi whenever he gets the chance, regardless if they're on the same team or not.
    • He really develops this with Rin Itoshi, who's amongst the best players of Blue Lock that Isagi knows that he needs to overcome. Rin especially didn't take it well when it became clear that his brother, Sae, appears to prefer Isagi over him, which cements the intense rivalry between the two of them.
  • Signature Move: When Team Z takes a moment to discuss with one another what their special football skill is, Isagi struggles to think of what his speciality is.
    • Isagi's instinctive play-style falls into this. When Isagi talks with Kunigami right after the match against Team X, the former explains how the reason he passed the ball to Kunigami to score a goal against Team X was because it unconsciously happened as if it was just a reflex. That he "smelled the goal" if he was to pass it to Kunigami for the latter to score with his signature kick. In return, Kunigami finds that Isagi has the amazing talent of being able to instantly follow his instincts, which given how Isagi explained it, Kunigami views "Goal Scent" as Isagi's signature weapon. After the match against Team Y, Chigiri adds to this claiming that Isagi's signature weapon might be "Spatial Awareness," that plays into his instinctive play-style. That while most players tend to only focus on certain parts of the field, Isagi's able to see what goes on around the entire football field as if he was a god watching over everything, which his instincts kick in to move to wherever he feels is the most necessary.
    • By Chapter 37, Isagi discovers "Direct Shot;" his signature kick at the goal that combines with his "Spatial Awareness" as to where to shoot, and to not think of anything else in front of the goal other than directly taking the shot. Isagi had actually already pulled it off at the end of the match against Team Y (chapter 13), but he wasn't able to replicate or understand it until the end of the match against Team V.
    • During the Neo Egoist League game against Manshine City, Isagi developed Metavision, through which Isagi mixes his well-known penchant for spatial awareness and positioning with an understanding of other players' egocentrism in order to create potential goalscoring situations for himself.
  • Spirited Competitor: Isagi quickly becomes one once he realizes he needs to beat those stronger to actually become a better player. Even as the challenges inside Blue Lock become harder and greater in scale, Isagi is much more excited than intimidated as it fuels him to be the best player that he can be.
  • Taking the Bullet: During the Tag entrance game when an enraged Kunigami was aiming to hit back at Igarashi for hitting him in the head, Isagi ended up unintentionally taking the soccer ball to the chest due to Igarashi taking cover behind him.
  • Tastes Like Friendship: As thanks for the goal assist against Team X, Kunigami shares his steak reward with Isagi during the moment that they're befriending one another.
  • Teach Me How To Fight: Before the match against Team V that will decide Team Z's fate at Blue Lock, Isagi seeks out Baro (who's scored 10 goals for Team X by this point) in order for the latter to teach the former how to better score goals. The result is Baro practicing with Isagi 1-on-1.
  • Team Spirit: In the first chapter, Isagi's a follower of winning as a team. However, due to choking in front of the goal in the Saitama Prefecture High School Finals where he passed the ball away rather than take the shot himself, that's quickly done away with after hearing Ego's It's All About Me speech.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Any time Isagi learns/discovers something new towards becoming the best egotistical football player, it appears as a new piece to an ongoing puzzle that's coming together within his brain. In Chapter 31, Ego describes this as one who goes through an "awakening" each time someone overcomes some sort of barrier.
    • By Chapter 37, Isagi comes to understand the "Direct Shot" puzzle piece that won him the games against Team Y and Team V. That in order to score in front of the goal, he puts all strategies and potential interferences out of his mind except the need to shoot the ball at the best spot of the goal.
    • By Chapter 42, Isagi comes to understand the "Positioning & Impact" puzzle piece that makes his kicking more precise and clean. During a training exercise at the start of the Second Selection where Isagi has to score 100 goals in 90 minutes against a Blue Lock goalie hologram, he learns how to better position his body and foot in order to always hit the soccer ball in the exact spot he wants it to go.
    • By Chapter 87, Isagi comes to understand the "Luck" puzzle piece, and the need to take advantage of such coincidental moments when playing football. This eventually comes into play for Isagi at the tail end of the Blue Lock vs. U-20 match that helps him score the final goal.
    • By the time of the Neo EGOIST League, he comes to unlock and understand "Metavision," which is basically Hyper-Awareness of everything that's going on around the soccer field on steroids.
    • During Neo EGOIST League training with Kunigami, Isagi starts to train up his non-kicking left leg in order to become more ambidextrous. In Chapter 212, he shows off the results of his "Lefty Shoot" puzzle piece training by scoring the first goal against Italy's Ubers with his off-leg, which catches everyone by surprise.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Seen sweaty and without his shirt in the locker room following Team Z's rough loss to Team X.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Tends to not understand the "ego" that he's feeling after crushing his opponents.
    • He's unable to understand why he feels so pumped up after eliminating a football player as good as Kira from Blue Lock. Ego explains it to be the feeling of victory, which continuing to achieve such a feeling will help develop one's "ego."
    • It happens again after scoring the goal that allowed Team Z to defeat Team Y as Isagi stands before the defeated Niko, who was reduced to tears.

"I play soccer while listening to that voice. You can hear it, right? The monster's voice."

One of the series' main support characters. Meguru Bachira is a forward specialized in dribbling, excelling both in its technical and creative aspects. His instinctive play style makes him a force to be reckoned with, but at the same time one that few people can understand, since he attributes his intuition to the "monster" inside him. This monster is also the one behind Bachira's main aspirations of finding other "monsters" to play with, which he quickly finds inside Blue Lock in the form of Isagi.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Bachira chooses to play for Spain's F.C. Barcha team due to being the country known for their high dribbling technique, which is Bachira's speciality.

  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: Bachira's mother features heavily in his flashbacks, and we see her meeting Isagi's parents at their game against Japan's U-20, but there's no mention or appearance by his father.
  • Animal Motifs: Bachira means "happy bee", which is a perfect description if you consider his personality and his black-and-yellow colored hair.
    • Bachira's dribbling-focused playstyle is reminiscent of a bee: always buzzing around the field and being very hard to catch, even when surrounded. To add onto that, he develops techniques such as the "Bee Shot", where he kicks the ball fast enough to make it hard for defenders to appropriately react.
  • The Bait: In order to score at least one goal against Team X, Bachira decided to take on this role where his play grabs the attention of all the X defenders, which he then passes the soccer ball off to Isagi so that the latter has a free shot at the goal. In the end, Baro catches up to Isagi, who subconsciously passed it over to Kunigami and scored the goal instead.
  • Bash Brothers: Ever since the two of them managed to take down Kira together in the Tag entrance game, he and Isagi are usually seen practicing and playing football together all throughout their time at Blue Lock.
  • Character Development: In order for Bachira to develop to a higher level of football that will allow him to play with other monster players such as Isagi and Rin, Bachira realizes that he needs to let go of playing with his "imaginary monster friend" during the Second Selection.
  • Childish Bangs: Bachira has a very eccentric and enthusiastic demeanor that gives a youthful quality to him, only accentuated by his bob-cut/blunt bangs combination.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He's definitely an odd one and comes off as kind of a looney person who talks about the "monsters" that reside in everyone. Not to mention that he quite literally remained asleep in the middle of Room Z as the Tag entrance game is going on until Igarashi tries to aim for him, which finally wakes Bachira up.
  • Combat Pragmatist: If there's something he can do within the rules no matter how dirty it may appear, he'll be sure to go for it, such as outright trying to kick other players during the Tag entrance game as the only actual rule was the use of hands being illegal.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Only in the sense that the writer of this manga wrote Kamisama no Iutoori and Kamisama no Iutoori Ni, Bachira is a contrast to Ushimitsu Kiyoshiro and Amaya Takeru, even though all three characters start out the same. Ushimitsu and Amaya both start out being the more out there violent new friend that helps a more average protagonist (Yasuto Akashi and Takahata Shun for Ushimitsu and Amaya respectively) for the first chunk of their story, and the protagonists eventually rise to the occasion themselves in their own ways. While the protagonists rise to the occasion they never surpass these friends, in Meguru's case however, Yoichi seems to have surpassed him by the time they finally face each other on opposite teams as enemies rather than friendly rivals. He also isn't as out there as the two besides his first initial appearance where he kicks some fellow Blue Lock members. He's also pushed more to the side as time goes on, while Ushimitsu and Amaya were always major players in every arc they participated in. He slowly loses his standing as a character similar to Ushimitsu and becomes an Amaya at best. Unlike Ushimitsu, whose family is never shown, Bachira seems to be a single parent household. And unlike Amaya, whose parents were shown to be incredibly abusive, she is a loving if struggling mother.
  • Confusion Fu: Bachira's play style can be summed up as this. His creativity and instinct when he has the ball on his feet coupled with his ability to execute highly technical dribbles make him so unpredictable that he can fool even the most analytic and cautious defenders. Isagi notes at one point that it would be impossible for him to outright steal the ball from Bachira in an one-on-one.
  • A Day in the Limelight: In chapter 28 after all of Team Z loses confidence due to going down 3-0 early in the match against Team V, the one remaining hyped up player, Bachira, takes on almost the whole V team himself with his dribbling skills to score the first goal for Team Z. All to inspire confidence back into Team Z to keep playing at high spirits and evolve to greater heights.
  • Distinctive Appearances: He's got yellow highlights on the lower part of his hair.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Bachira first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Exact Words: He follows along with the rules to the exact letter. The only rule of the Tag entrance game was to not use hands, which meant that attacking others was allowed (something that would result in a Red Card in an actual football game). Thus, Bachira kicks Igarashi in the head when the latter tried to make him the new "it," and later in the Tag game, he attempts to do the same to Kira in order to throw the latter off-balance when Bachira is aiming to eliminate him.
  • Friendless Background: We see in flashbacks that he was often bullied and viewed as weird by his peers all the way from elementary to high school. This led him to self isolate and start seeing his "monster" who was the only one to understand him. Bachira even admits he's glad he came to Blue Lock on the basis that he met Isagi and seems more worried about never playing with him again than never going pro.
  • Friendly Rivalry: He becomes buddies with Isagi after they succeed in eliminating Kira during the Tag entrance game. They're usually seen as a duo playing together all throughout the Blue Lock project.
  • Fighting Spirit: After all of Team Z minus the traitor, Kuon, lose the will to keep playing after going down to a early 3-0 deficit against Team V, Bachira's the one Z player that's still hyped as hell to keep playing, which the sight of Bachira's confidence is enough to get everyone else's spirits back up to continue playing.
  • Hearing Voices: A lot of Bachira's actions in football has him following the voice of the "monster" that resides within him, which is basically Bachira following his instincts. Bachira just views instincts as a "monster" living within him.
  • Momma's Boy: Bachira loves his mother dearly, confiding his fears and concerns to her when he was shunned by his fellow peers for his "weirdness". She in turn, comforted him and states her confidence that one day he'll find his inner "voice" and find a friend who will share his love for soccer.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Bachira appears to have no issue walking around nude when he needs to freshen up following a match, much to the shock of his teammates.
  • Power of Trust: Believing that Isagi had the look of someone who would take the shot at eliminating a strong player in the Tag entrance game, Bachira gambles the possibility of himself being eliminated as the "it" by passing the soccer ball to Isagi believing that the two of them can catch Kira off-guard and eliminate him. The gamble paid off as Isagi chooses to accept the pass, and smashes the ball into Kira's face, which resulted in Kira's elimination being the final "it" as time expired.
  • Odd Friendship: His friendship with Isagi at Blue Lock is shaping up to be this. Isagi comes off relatively really normal while Bachira is a Cloudcuckoolander who talks about "monsters."
  • Power Levels: Starting from the Neo EGOIST League, power levels are introduced where football club sponsors around the world take part in an auction to bid on and finance the players that take part in Blue Lock. The higher the bid determining who the sponsors consider to be the strongest.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's F.C. Barcha vs. Bastard München match, Bachira starts off with a ¥32,000,000 bid from Portugal's F.C. Portimion.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's F.C. Barcha vs. Ubers match, Bachira's bid is increased to ¥66,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's F.C. Barcha vs. Paris X Gen match, Bachira's bid is increased to ¥79,000,000.
  • Rank Up: Starts off in entrance Tag game at Rank 290.
    • In the First Selection: He starts off at the top rank of Team Z at 265 before he starts dropping due to his teammates getting goals that allow them to jump ahead of him.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Bachira is named Blue Lock's Rank 16.
    • Following the Second Selection, Bachira just misses out on being amongst the Top-6 as he ends up Rank 7.
  • Rivals Team Up: Does this often with Isagi due to their growing friendship ever since the Tag entrance game.
    • He basically forced Isagi into a team-up during the Tag entrance game.
  • Signature Move: Claims dribbling to be his main football weapon.
  • Slasher Smile: Tends to show these off when he's hyped up.
  • Sweet Tooth: The 2 week day off after the U-20 match has Isagi meeting with Bachira offering a very sweet drink from the cafe that he ordered while waiting for Isagi together with Chigiri, hinting this.
  • When He Smiles: Bachira is known for his crazy smiles but he is capable of smiling genuinely. This is most prominent when during the Second Selection, Isagi was able to keep up with Bachira during his awakening and Rin picked Isagi for his team.

Manga Debut: Chapter 2 note

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_kunigamitransparent.png

"I'm going to be...a football superhero."

The Big Guy of Team Z who has a really powerful kick, and one of the main supporting characters. Kunigami's desire in life is to become a symbol in the world in the form of a football superhero, which he believes to be the football players who stand triumphant after scoring the goal that wins it all. As one of the friendlier strikers of Team Z, Kunigami winds up befriending Isagi early on. Particularly after Isagi helps Kunigami score a goal during their match against Team X.

During the Second Selection, Kunigami ends up getting eliminated, but rather than being kicked out, he's one of the few selected players to be given the option of the Wild Card route that will allow him to continue to stay on the Blue Lock program via a gruesome come-back competition. Kunigami takes the route and wins out, and is put through an intense training program that's said to be Ego's attempt at making a copy of football's current best player, Noel Noa. The result is Kunigami making it through the Wild Card program in time to rejoin Blue Lock for the Neo EGOIST League, but he comes out of it a changed man for the worse.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Kunigami chooses to play for Germany's Bastard München team.

  • Ambiguously Bi: According to the Blue Lock Egoist bible, he checks out both men and women's necks because he thinks the nape of it is the sexiest part of the human body.
  • Backstory:
    • A brief flashback is seen of Kunigami as a young kid watching football on his home television. It's here that Kunigami gained his love for football watching real life "superheroes" win it all for their team.
    • The novel Us, before the battle delves into his backstory since he was a toddler, fleshing out his relationships with family and associates, and his reason in playing football.
  • Berserk Button: Dirty play tends to really rub him the wrong way, such as seeing Bachira have no issues using his legs to kick people in the Tag entrance game since it's technically not against the rules to do so. The fact that Igarashi hit Kunigami in the head with the soccer ball to make him the new "it" while he was off-guard calling out Bachira for his actions was more than enough of a dirty play to piss him off.
  • The Big Guy: Among Isagi's core group of Blue Lock friends, he's the powerhouse of the team. Especially when it comes to his powerful kick that can score goals at far distances. His section in the spin-off novel also describes that since as a child, he noticeably has a larger build than other kids his age.
  • The Bus Came Back: After disappearing for a good chunk of the series following his elimination from the second selection, Kunigami returns at the end of chapter 149 after the Blue Lock vs. Japan U-20 match where he comes back from Ego's Wild Card program to take part in Blue Lock’s regular curriculum again.
  • Character Development: Kunigami's introduced as an all around Nice Guy, but whatever happened in the Wild Card training, he comes out of it a lot edgier.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: He is quite similar to Aoyama Senichi from Kamisama no Iutoori Ni. Aoyama's shown desires to be a hero in the way Kunigamai has, and has expressed strong interest in being a pro player. Aoyama and Kunigami also have a strong kick and kick with the same leg when introduced, but Aoyama's kick is shown in a flashback that started the series to be so wild that the ball goes flying. Aoyama only succeeds when he learns to make it a trick curve shot, while Kunigami's more a cannon shot of a kick. Kunigami and Aoyama also have a similar "Close Friend" relationship to the main protagonist, but Aoyama was childhood friends with Yasuto Akashi. Aoyama and Yasuto Akashi fight because Akashi seems to show no desire to continue with football while Isagi and Kunigami fight because Isagi "abandons" him to play with players Isagi sees as better. While Kunigami and Aoyama go down dark paths in an attempt to be better, it's the context as to why they did so that differs. Kunigami did the Wild Card training and came out of it much more cynical and angry, becoming a dark hero of sorts. Aoyama used his soccer skills to try to save the day, but ends up killing his classmates instead due to the game he was forced to play. Aoyama becomes more traumatized as a result, with his big moment of recignition by his peers ending with them all being killed around him as he basks in their praise. While it is not shown yet what Kunigami went through, Aoyama's path of having to even indirectly kill others is quite similar to Blue Lock's killing of promising careers in football.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Despite becoming a lot more cynical and mean, Kunigami refuses to teach Isagi with potentially developing ambidexterity with his entire body, citing that Isagi simply does not have the body type and he could mess up his current specs if he pushes too hard. Isagi notes this to himself, cluing the audience in that the old friendly Kunigami is still somewhere in there underneath all the jerkiness.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Orange hair with orange eyes.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • In chapter 7, Kunigami got to be the one who scored Team Z's lone goal in the 5-1 loss against Team X due to Isagi passing it to him in the final moments of the game.
    • In chapter 29, Kunigami evolves his shot during the match against Team V in order to score at a much further distance than he was previously able to. Thus, scoring the game's 2nd point for Team Z. The kick itself caused a knuckleball that had no spin on it, which allowed the ball to act out of sorts, and bypassed the goalie.
    • In chapter 33, Kunigami scored the 4th point for Team Z with a rebound finisher during an offensive barrage on Team V's goal that was started by Chigiri and Gagamaru.
  • Determinator: He states his determination to Isagi that even if the gods deem it impossible, and if he's laughed at and called delusional by those around him, he will continue forward to fulfill his dream to become a football superhero.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Kunigami first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Exhausted Eyebags: Gains them since he returns from the Wild Card competition.
  • Goal in Life: When Isagi asks why Kunigami plays football, Kunigami answers that it's to become a "football superhero," which Kunigami believes to be those who became a symbol of the game for everyone to see by being the one who stands triumphant after scoring the goal that wins it all.
  • Handshake Substitute: During the moment where he's befriending Isagi following the game against Team X, they bump fist to hype each other up to win the next game.
  • Heroic BSoD: Experienced this when he lost to Shidou and is kicked out of the second selection...until he found the Wild Card room and took his chance to enter there to stay in the Blue Lock project.
  • Honor Before Reason: He puts playing fair-and-square over everything else, even if such an act puts him as a disadvantage against others. Igarashi quite literally took advantage of this by hitting Kunigami during the Tag entrance game to make him the new it despite being the one who came to Igarashi's defense by calling out Bachira for kicking him.
  • Hunk: He's easily one of the manliest-looking guys in the team, and is good-looking, very well-built and muscular.
  • It's Personal: In the Neo EGOIST League, Kunigami plays extra hard against Shidou in the Bastard München vs. France's Paris X Gen match in order to get back at Shidou for humiliating him in Blue Lock's Second Selection.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While Kunigami does take a dark cynical turn after the Second Selection, his old friendly persona is still buried in there beneath all the darkness, such as him agreeing to help Isagi develop his non-kicking left foot in order to become more ambidextrous.
  • Luminescent Blush: He's not good at handling compliments and frequently gets tomato-faced while trying to deny them. While befriending Isagi, Kunigami blushes in embarrassment at Isagi calling him a great guy.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: Amongst the Team Z players, he's easily the most physically built. Kunigami's introduction even has him shirtless to show off his muscles as he's changing into his Blue Lock uniform in front of Isagi.
  • Nice Guy: He's a particularly nice dude as long as you're not playing dirty. This trait goes away after he returns from the Wild Card door.
F.C. Barcha match, Kunigami starts off with a ¥24,000,000 bid from Japan's Kawasaki Breakerz.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Bastard München vs. Manshine City match, Kunigami's bid is increased to ¥47,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Bastard München vs. Ubers match, Kunigami's bid is increased to ¥50,000,000.
  • Precision F-Strike: Orders Bachira to play by the f#$king rules when the former jumps onto Kunigami's back during the Tag entrance game. He then proceeds to throw Bachira off him.
  • Put on a Bus: By chapter 94, he disappears for a good chunk of the series after being eliminated from the second selection. However, he's one of the few selected players to go down the Wild Card come-back competition route to which Kunigami won out, and entered into a specialized training program before being placed back into the regular Blue Lock curriculum.
  • Rank Up: Starts off in entrance Tag game at Rank 291.
    • In the First Selection: Kunigami rises up to Rank 266 (just one spot behind the Team Z's top rank, Isagi) thanks to the goal he scored against Team X.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Kunigami is named Blue Lock's Rank 50. He doesn't make it through the Second Selection, but due to eventually coming back as a Wild Card, he returns as the 36th player along with the original 35 that passed the Second Selection.
  • The Rival: He and Raichi are usually going at it due to their personas. Raichi being an aggressive angry person while Kunigami is the more level-headed who doesn't appreciate Raichi's attitude.
  • Signature Move: Because of his strong body, Kunigami can kick the soccer ball with such power. Thus, he considers his left foot's shooting power to be his main football weapon.
  • Superhero: In a metaphorical sense, his Goal in Life is to become this regarding soccer. Kunigami views the players that he's seen on television brimming with courage and passion as the real life superheroes.
  • Tastes Like Friendship: As thanks for the goal assist against Team X, Kunigami shares his steak reward with Isagi during the moment that they're befriending one another.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Evolves his shot during the match against Team V in order to score at a much further distance than he was previously able to.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Whatever Kunigami went through in the Wild Card room completely sheds off his Honor Before Reason mentality and what friendliness he once had.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: A brief moment right before the Tag entrance game as he's switching into his Blue Lock uniform. He's also seen sweaty and without his shirt in the locker room following Team Z's rough loss to Team X.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Calls out Bachira for trying to kick people during the Tag entrance game.

    Hyoma Chigiri

Hyoma Chigiri

Manga Debut: Chapter 2 note

Voiced by: Soma Saito (Japanese), Aaron Dismuke (English), Eduardo Curiel (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chigiri.png

"I don't know how long my leg will last, but I want to believe in this new me. I will keep on running until my leg can't keep up anymore."

Known as "Princess" for his long hair and feminine appearance, Hyoma Chigiri is a prodigy forward that played at Rajitsu Tech before becoming one of the participants of the Blue Lock project, and serves as one of the main supporting characters. Blessed with naturally strong leg muscles, Chigiri's main weapon has always been his freakish speed, both with and without the ball on his feet.

However, his stellar potential was cut short early in his career after suffering an ACL tear - one of the worst injuries a football player can have - at a young age; making him afraid of reinjury if he played football as he did before. At Blue Lock, Chigiri is forced to face his fears as his dream of becoming the world's best striker is reawakened and challenged by rivals such as Yoichi Isagi and the rest of Team Z.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Chigiri chooses to play for England's Manshine City team due to the country being known for their speedy players, which is Chigiri's speciality.

  • The Ace:
    • Before joining Blue Lock, he was the star player of the Rajitsu Tech football team, much to the jealousy of his teammates, the Wanima brothers.
    • Due to Nagi's drop off in the Neo EGOIST League, Chigiri ends up as this for Manshine City as he's been the most consistent scorer for the team by scoring at least one goal in each of his matches. This is shown in Chapter 241 where the televised marketing for the Manshine City vs. Ubers match displayed Chigiri vs. Baro as the star opposing players rather than Nagi vs. Baro.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: And sister. Chigiri's response to seeing his mother and sister in the audience stands during the U-20 match is one of embarassment rather than glee.
  • Backstory: The match against Team W goes into his backstory, such as how he used to be a star player for Rajitsu Tech before suffering an ACL tear. It also goes into his past connection with Team W's Wanima brothers, who were his seniors at Rajitsu Tech. The Wanima brothers were at the top of the team hierarchy, but were quickly pushed aside due to not being able to match Chigiri's speed. Once Chigiri's ACL tear happened, the Wanima brothers used every moment they could to taunt and treat Chigiri like crap just to make sure that he never recovers. The result was Chigiri becoming the Broken Bird that he is at the start of the series.
  • Broken Bird: His past ACL tear turned him into this as he's only ever seen depressed and not taking Blue Lock all that seriously at the start of the series. He finally breaks out of his funk during the match against Team W.
  • Character Development: He starts off as a Broken Bird due to his past ACL tear leaving him depressed to the point of not taking Blue Lock seriously. However, after a bit of motivating from Isagi, even pushing Chigiri away for being useless, Chigiri's ego is reawakened to the point of breaking out of his funk in the match against Team W, and becomes highly motivated to make his way through Blue Lock from then on.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Red hair with red eyes.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His ACL tear and bullying from the Wanima brothers left him a Broken Bird before coming to Blue Lock. He eventually gets over it during the match against Team W.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • A lot of focus is put on him for the Team Z vs. Team W match. Particularly, his development to stop being a Broken Bird. Chapter 21 specifically is all about Chigiri breaking loose, and using his speed to score the crucial goal against Team W that ended the game as a 4-4 tie rather than ending as a loss.
    • In Chapter 31 during the game against Team V, Chigiri's the one to score the 3rd point for Team Z after realizing that he can bypass V's fastest player, Tsurugi, due to the latter's Explosive Acceleration weapon only making him faster at the start. Thus, Chigiri kicks the ball a long distance offensively, which Tsurugi gets a head start, but due to Chigiri being able to stay at a constant high speed compared to Tsurugi slowing down, Chigiri catches up to the ball first, and scores.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: As a general rule, Chigiri doesn't like it when others worry about him. The best example of this is when Isagi first starts getting to know him and expresses concern about his leg and attitude to soccer at the time. He often deflects the concern of others by telling them to worry about themselves.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Chigiri first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The sight of Isagi trying his hardest to fight down to the wire against Team W, and even push Chigiri out of the way, is enough to motivate Chigiri to finally break out of his bystander Broken Bird status. Thus, finally showing off his blazing speed at Blue Lock for the first time.
  • Fatal Flaw: His fear of losing everything if his healed ACL tear ends up getting worse somewhere down the line. He gets over it during the match against Team W.
  • Fragile Speedster: Chigiri is quite literally the embodiment of this trope. His play style is almost completely dependent on his immense speed, but having already suffered an ACL tear, he has to deal with the always present risk of re-injuring himself and ending his career once and for all. He had to be switched out during the first few minutes of the U-20 Vs. Blue Lock Eleven match's second half as he lacked the proper stamina to last as long as the other Blue Lockers due to this.
  • Friendly Rivalry: He develops this with Isagi after the latter helped Chigiri reawaken his ego to become the best striker during Team Z's match against Team W.
  • Game-Breaking Injury:
    • In the past, Chigiri suffered from an ACL tear and the fear of losing function of his legs is what made him lose out interest in taking football seriously until the match against Team W.
    • He runs out of stamina during the Blue Lock vs. U-20 Japan match, which results in coach Ego needing to sub him out for Hiori.
  • Goal in Life: The only reason Chigiri accepted coming to Blue Lock is because he's looking for a reason to finally drop out of wanting to be a star football striker after suffering an ACL tear gave him a fear that continuing to play will cause a reinjury that will take away everything from him. However, he regains the desire to become the best striker during the match against Team W.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Due to Chigiri hiding his natural speed from his other Team Z teammates early on, Chigiri was left out of the equation by Kuon when he sold the team out to Team W. When Chigiri stops holding himself back due to Isagi riling him up midway during the match, Chigiri finally showed off and saved the team from being eliminated, surprising both the Wanima brothers-who knew about Chigiri's past ACL tear- and Kuon himself.
  • In-Universe Nickname:
    • The Wanima brothers call him "genius" given that Chigiri's supposed to be a football prodigy. Though they say that out of sarcasm.
    • Many of Chigiri's teammates often call him "Ojou" (which means princess in English) or "Kunoichi" due to his feminine appearance and ninja-like speed.
    • He got the nickname ‘Red Panther’ since the Neo-Egoist League after a local newspaper called him that once.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Fitting for a Bishounen. Aryu (himself a Long-Haired Pretty Boy) even asks what products he uses on his hair when they match up.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name is written with the kanjis for "leopard" and "horse", referring to his great speed.
  • Necessary Drawback: As a counteract to his blazing speed, Chigiri winds up exhausting himself a lot earlier than most other players. This exhaustion causes Ego to have to sub Chigiri out for Hiori during the Blue Lock vs. U-20 Japan match, which Ego calls Chigiri out that such an exhaustion would never have happened had Chigiri been training beforehand (Chigiri was suffering as a Broken Bird at the time).
  • Power Levels: Starting from the Neo EGOIST League, power levels are introduced where football club sponsors around the world take part in an auction to bid on and finance the players that take part in Blue Lock. The higher the bid determining who the sponsors consider to be the strongest.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Manshine City vs. Bastard München match, Chigiri starts off with a ¥30,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Manshine City vs. Paris X Gen match, Chigiri's bid is increased to ¥50,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Manshine City vs. Ubers match, Chigiri's bid is increased to ¥55,000,000.
  • Rank Up: Following the Tag entrance game, he starts off at Rank 267 on Team Z.
    • In the First Selection: Due to the crucial goal he scored against Team W, he goes up to 266 just behind the team's top scorer, Kuon.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Chigiri is named Blue Lock's Rank 44. He's also one of the 35 survivors that eventually passed the Second Selection, which places him within the top-35.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Chigiri routinely does facial care and takes care of his long hair well.
  • The Rival: As fellow speedsters, Chigiri is usually at it with Tsurugi during the Team Z vs. Team V match.
  • Signature Move: His blazing speed not only makes him the fastest player on Team Z, but perhaps even the fastest player amongst all of Blue Lock.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Good-looks runs strong in his family. It's clear that Chigiri got his looks from his mother's side of the family, and even his older sister looks like she could have become a model.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Seen sweaty and without his shirt in the locker room following Team Z's rough loss to Team X.
  • Walking Spoiler: He goes through a Broken Bird character arc early on that completely flips his character.

    Gurimu Igarashi

Gurimu Igarashi

Manga Debut: Chapter 2 note

Voiced by: Aoi Ichikawa (Japanese), Kyle Igneczi (English), Diego Medina (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_igarashitransparent.png

"If I lose, I'll have to become a monk at the temple..."

A second-year forward who comes from a religious background due to being born into the temple life-style. Igarashi was set to inherit the temple when he got older, but hated that he had no say in it. As a result, Igarashi made a promise with his old man to allow him to screw his monk destiny if he succeeds at becoming a pro football player.

Upon his arrival at Blue Lock, Igarashi ends up getting ranked as the least skilled forward of Team Z. However, despite being surrounded by monster players on all sides, it doesn't faze Igarashi's determination to survive through Blue Lock. As a member of Team Z, Igarashi primarily played on defense, which his body turns out to be durable enough to stop the soccer ball when it's kicked towards him no matter how hard it's coming at him.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Igarashi chooses to play for Germany's Bastard München team as he feels that it's the best suited place for Japanese players to go to.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After being injured during the Tag entrance game, Igarashi's reduced to begging Isagi not to hit him with the soccer ball, which would make him the "it" that gets eliminated from Blue Lock. As Isagi's about to perform the kick however, he stops his actions as he realizes that he's not going to get any better unless he aims to eliminate the stronger players.
  • Backstory: Igarashi is somewhat of a religious man as he had been born into the temple life. He was destined to inherit the temple and become a monk, but made a promise with his old man to drop it if Igarashi succeeds in pursuing a career in football.
  • Butt-Monkey: He'll often be treated as such given how lesser skilled he is compared to the others. Bachira quite literally got away with kicking him in the head during the Tag entrance game due to the only actual rule being that you couldn't use your hands.
  • Combat Pragmatist: During the Tag entrance game, he hits Kunigami in the head with the soccer ball to make him the new "it" despite Kunigami coming to Igarashi's defense by calling out Bachira for kicking him in the head. Kunigami didn't appreciate the dirty play one bit. He also stole the ball from Bachira during the game against Team X only to quickly lose it moments after.
  • Determinator: The thought of not wanting to live his life stuck to a temple is what drives him to become a pro football player.
  • Distinctive Appearances: Has white hair with black highlights.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Igarashi can be seen amongst the 300 forwards following after Isagi towards the gate to Blue Lock. He's also in the chapter's final group shot.
  • Elimination Houdini: In-universe example having been carried twice through the First and Second Selections.
    • Despite being the last ranked player of Team Z and providing minimal help, Igarashi managed to survive the First Selection due to the whole of Team Z making it to the Second Selection.
    • Igarashi's then carried through the Second Selection due to getting paired up in a team with Ryusei Shidou, who turned out to be the Rank 2 player at Blue Lock.
  • Epic Fail: Steals the ball from his teammate, Bachira, in an attempt to score the goal against Team X himself only to have the ball easily stolen away from him. Some of his teammates were not amused.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: While not outright hated by anyone perhaps barring Ryusei Shidou, he's constantly underestimated, derided, or otherwise treated as The Load both on and off the pitch. Even Isagi, who is the closest to him due to both of them starting off as lower rank players, seems to put up with him out of proximity rather than genuine interest in being his friend.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: His left ankle ends up getting sprained during Blue Lock's Tag entrance game from having a thrown Bachira land on top of him, which left Igarashi a sitting duck unable to move. Isagi could have easily hit the injured Igarashi to make him the "it" that would be eliminated from Blue Lock, but Isagi instead chose to go for the stronger players, which instead resulted in Kira's elimination. Unlike Chigiri who is later revealed to have suffered an ACL Tear in the past, this injury didn't stick too long for him.
  • Goal in Life: His goal is to become a pro football player in order to escape his destiny of living the temple life as a monk.
  • Heroic Spirit: Believes in his own spirit and determination to make it through Blue Lock. Igarashi considers his unyielding spirit to be his main football weapon.
  • In-Series Nickname: He is called IgaGuri by his Team Z teammates.
  • It's All About Me: He falls into this during the match against Team X since there's still a chance for him to make it to Blue Lock's next round as long as he's the one on the team who scores the most goals. Igarashi steals the ball from his teammate, Bachira, to try to score the goal himself only to have it quickly stolen from him due to his lack of skills. He quickly falls into being more of a team player following this Epic Fail.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After stealing the soccer ball from Bachira during the game against Team X in order to try to score the goal himself, Igarashi embarrasses himself by having the ball easily stolen away from him.
  • The Load: He's easily the least skilled player amongst the 300 forwards, which is why he was labeled with the lowest rank of 300-Z when he first came to Blue Lock.
  • Loophole Abuse: Igarashi starts training himself up during the Neo EGOIST League as a player that will be aiming to get fouled, or look like he's been fouled, in order to make opposing players receive Yellow Cards. Basically, he's aiming to master the art of flopping.
  • Mystical 108: At one point, Igarashi's rank was set at 108. Might be a coincidence, but considering his religious upbringing it makes one think.
  • Nothing Personal: Igarashi starts off as the first "it" in Blue Lock's Tag entrance game due to being the lowest rank. The person who ends the game as the "it" will get expelled from Blue Lock. Since Igarashi has no interest in returning to the temple life, he hopes no one holds their expulsion against him as he aims to kick the soccer ball at the other Team Z players to make someone the new "it."
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this moment when he realizes that he sprained his left ankle due to Kunigami throwing Bachira at him.
  • Rank Up: Out of 300 players during Blue Lock's First Selection, Igarashi starts off ranked 300 out of 300.
    • In the First Selection: Igarashi rises up to 275 following the Tag entrance game, but in actuality, and much to his disappointment, he's still in the same spot as the only reason Igarashi went up was because of the 25 players who couldn't get past the Tag game.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Igarashi is named Blue Lock's Rank 108. He's also one of the 35 survivors that eventually passed the Second Selection, which places him within the top-35.
  • Running Gag: A bit of a running gag is that Igarashi's a rough sleeper to those around him, which results in him keeping his teammates awake.
  • Signature Move: He believes that the unyielding spirit he provides for the team when playing football to be this.
  • Screw Destiny: Instead of going down the path he didn't want that would have had him inheriting the temple life that he was born into, Igarashi makes a deal with his old man to pursue a career in football, which Ego's opening speech was enough to convince him to go through with taking on the Blue Lock training program.
  • Stone Wall: One skill that he develops at Blue Lock is that it turns out that his body can withstand football shots no matter how powerful they are. Thus, he can stand and absorb the blow enough for him to steal the ball back for his team.
  • Talking in Your Sleep: He talks in his sleep, much to the detriment of his fellow Team Z teammates given that they all sleep in the same room.
  • The Team Normal: Playing into his lowest rank status, Igarashi's easily the most normal of the Blue Lock players as he doesn't truly have any football skills that help him stand out. Though later on, Igarashi starts to reveal a skill of his own where no matter how hard the opponent kicked the soccer ball, his body is durable enough to stop the ball in its tracks.
  • Those Two Guys: Oddly enough, he ends up in this dynamic with Raichi. Particularly when they're on the bench where the two of them are always arguing, or cheering on their teammates.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Given his temple background, Igarashi's seen to be the most religious of the Blue Lock players, and will go about praising Buddha at times.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: To stand out in the Neo EGOIST League compared to his fellow strikers, Igarashi decides to train himself up in the art of flopping.

Manga Debut: Chapter 2 note

Voiced by: Shugo Nakamura (Japanese), Lee George (English), Diego Estrada (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_gagamarutransparent.png

An odd striker of Team Z who's one of their better offensive players, and has a knack of contorting his body in many ways. Such a trait eventually leads him to taking on the role of being a goalie for Blue Lock.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Gagamaru chooses to play for Germany's Bastard München team.

  • Abnormal Limb Rotation Range: Part of Gagamaru's play-style takes advantage of him being able to bend his body in certain ways.
  • Alliterative Name: Both his first and last name start with G.
  • Butt-Monkey: Gagamaru tends to be one of the players that takes the most body damaging punishment while playing football as he does so in order to win games, but he also has to constantly put up with Naruhaya toying with him.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: He is quite similar to Sanada Yukio from Kamisama no Iutoori in design and general demeanor. While Yukio was known for his temper, Gagamaru is a relatively chill character who has a bit of a poker face. In fact, Raichi Jingo seems to have inherited Yukio's homicidal tendencies. Gagamaru overall takes after Yukio's more comedic and wild aspects.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • In chapter 12, Gagamaru got to be the one to score Team Z's first point against Team Y.
    • In chapter 35, Gagamaru makes the crucial defensive save in front of the goal after the players of Team V tried to rebound Reo's blocked penalty shot.
    • For the Blue Lock vs. U-20 Japan match, coach Ego assigns Gagamaru as the team's goalie under the belief that the latter's ability to contort his body in ways that no other player can is perfect for the goalie role. Sure enough, Gagamaru makes several crucial saves throughout the match.
    • In the Neo EGOIST League, coach Noa takes note of Gagamaru's skills as a goalie, which Gagamaru becomes the new goalie for Bastard München starting from the 2nd match against Manshine City. Like the game against U-20 Japan, Gagamaru makes several crucial saves throughout the Neo EGOIST League.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Gagamaru first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
Manshine City match, Gagamaru starts off with a ¥28,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Bastard München vs. Ubers match, Gagamaru's bid is increased to ¥32,000,000.
  • Rank Up: Following the Tag entrance game, he starts off at Rank 271 on Team Z.
    • In the First Selection: Gagamaru rises up to 267 (just two spots behind Team Z's rank-leader, Isagi) thanks to the goal he scored against Team Y.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Gagamaru is named Blue Lock's Rank 88. He's also one of the 35 survivors that eventually passed the Second Selection, which places him within the top-35.
  • Running Gag: Gagamaru tends to be the victim to Naruhaya's pranks. More specifically, the moments where Naruhaya steals away Gagamaru's food only for the latter to chase after Naruhaya to try to get the food back.
  • Signature Move: Claims that his close-quarter play is his best football weapon.
  • Slipknot Ponytail: Part of his hair is tied up in this fashion.
  • The Stoic: Rarely is Gagamaru ever seen displaying emotions. No matter the moments where it looks like he should be excited or angry over something, Gagamaru will always have that blank wide-eyed stare.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: One of Gagamaru's defining characteristics is his wide-eyed black stare.
  • Wild Child: Implied. Gagamaru is said to have gone off to the mountains for the 2-week day off when Bachira tried to invite him to hang out. His first few days in Blue Lock has him eating with his hands with the rest of Team Z trying to teach him on how to use eating utensils. When asked of the "What goes best with rice?" question in the official twitter's Q&A Trivia, Gagamaru answers "Wild Boar meat, the one that I hunted", and he spends his day off and holidays meditating in a bamboo grove and speaking with the mountain animals. However, considering that Gagamaru has functional social skills and knows how to work with technology, the trope is ultimately Downplayed. He is seen in the mountains in what looks to be the coat of a bear when the message for the Neo Egotist League is sent out.

    Jingo Raichi

Jingo Raichi

Manga Debut: Chapter 2 note

Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Japanese), Aaron Campbell (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_raichitransparent_9.png

A striker on Team Z who has a huge case of Hair-Trigger Temper. Raichi's almost always seen yelling at his teammates if they're doing something he doesn't like. He claims to be great thanks to his "sexy football" offensive play style, but by the time of the match against Team V, he turns out to be rather skilled at defensive play thanks to his strong body build.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Raichi chooses to play for Germany's Bastard München team.

  • Armor-Piercing Question: He really hits Isagi with this at the end of the match against Team X; yelling at him why he passed the ball to Kunigami instead of scoring the goal himself, and why Isagi bothered to even come to Blue Lock if he's not going to follow Ego's It's All About Me methods.
  • Berserk Button: Nothing seems to piss Raichi off more than things not going his way, or people getting in his way. Dirty scheming also seems to really piss him off as Raichi's the one to go after Kuon after the latter betrayed the team.
  • Combat Pragmatist: During the game against Team X, Raichi's the first to initiate stealing the ball from a teammate while everyone was disorganized trying to play for themselves. This goes away for him after the loss.
  • Cross-Popping Veins: Given his Hair-Trigger Temper persona, Raichi tends to get these a lot on his face.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Yellow hair with yellow eyes.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • He gets a bit of this throughout the match against Team V where Raichi's defensive play constantly messes with Reo's rhythm. So much so that Reo ends up not scoring a single goal.
    • In the Neo EGOIST League, coach Noa takes note of Raichi's strong body build and defensive skills by the time of the third league match against Ubers. Thus, Raichi is put into the game against Ubers at the defensive midfielder position, which he makes several key defensive plays throughout the game.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Raichi can be seen amongst the gathered group of 300 forwards when Isagi and Kira first arrive at the JFA building for Ego's opening speech. He's also in the chapter's final group shot.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Tries to hype up his supposed awesome shooting technique in front of his team as his "Sexy Football" move.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: A lot of things tend to piss Raichi off. He'll always be shouting or yelling out in anger at the people around him.
  • Hypocrite: Due to both actions enraging him, Raichi calls out Isagi for not passing to him when it came to Kunigami scoring the lone goal against Team X while also criticizing Isagi for wussing out against Baro and not shooting the goal himself.
  • Implied Death Threat: Not to the point of killing him, but Raichi makes it quite clear that if the traitor, Kuon tries to pull anything during their final First Selection match against Team V, then Raichi will be the one that makes sure that Kuon ends up in a wheelchair.
  • It's All About Me: Given his aggressive persona, Raichi will usually be seen as the one yelling at people as to why they're not playing to make him look better. Early on, particularly in the match against Team X, Raichi shows himself off as one of the main guys of Team Z playing for himself, and even outright stole the ball from his teammate, Isagi. Following the match against Team X however, Raichi goes along with Kuon's strategies for the later games.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being someone that gets pissed off a lot, Raichi does genuinely enjoy it when his team pulls off success.
Ubers match, Raichi starts off with a ¥18,000,000 bid.
  • Precision F-Strike: Will drop these from time to time given his temper.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Given his aggressive persona, his temper will rage out whenever things aren't going his way.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Raichi is named Blue Lock's Rank 95. He's also one of the 35 survivors that eventually passed the Second Selection, which places him within the top-35.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He really goes off on Isagi at the end of the match against Team X calling the latter out for forgetting the rules of Blue Lock. That instead of Isagi shooting the ball at the goal when he was given the chance, he wussed out, and passed it over to Kunigami.
  • The Rival: He and Kunigami are usually going at it due to their personas. Raichi being an aggressive angry person while Kunigami is the more level-headed who doesn't appreciate Raichi's attitude.
  • Rousing Speech: After Team V takes back the lead 4-3 against Team Z during their First Selection match, Raichi's the one who steps in to yell at everyone to keep fighting no matter what, or else he'll kill everyone for wasting his defensive play against Reo that was keeping them in the game. He ends the speech reminding everyone on Team Z that they're all strikers, which gets everyone focused back on the game.
  • Scary Teeth: His teeth are all spikes.
  • Signature Move: Boasts that his awesome shooting technique is his best football weapon. Even calls it his "Sexy Football."
  • Suddenly Shouting: He tends to do this a lot due to his Hair-Trigger Temper persona.
  • Those Two Guys: Oddly enough, he ends up in this dynamic with Igarashi. Particularly when they're on the bench where the two of them are always arguing, or cheering on their teammates.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Raichi tends to do this a lot calling out his teammates who screw up, or don't follow what he says. He especially has this moment when he calls out Isagi twice at the end of the match against Team X. The first being for passing it to Kunigami when Raichi was also free to score, and because Isagi chickened out against Baro by passing it rather than taking the shot himself.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: He turns out to have a knack for defensive play during his time at Blue Lock, which Raichi will cover and latch on to someone so hard that they can't do anything.

    Wataru Kuon

Wataru Kuon

Manga Debut: Chapter 2 note

Voiced by: Masatomo Nakazawa (Japanese), Mark Allen, Jr. (English), Dave Ramos (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_kuontransparent.png

"I will win even if I have to betray others. That's my very own ego!"

The Smart Guy of Team Z who's got good jumping ability due to his long legs. As one of the more intelligent members of the team, Kuon's the one who comes up with the strategies for his teammates to follow. By the time of the match against Team W however, it becomes quite clear that Kuon has other plans going on.

  • All for Nothing: Kuon betrays Team Z only for his efforts to be in vain when Chigiri reveals his speed weapon and scores the tying goal which gets him beaten up by Team W and stuck on a team that no longer trusts him.
  • Arc Villain: He's the main antagonist of the First Selection due to deciding to turn traitor against his Team Z, and attempts to screw them over.
  • Backstory: He gets a bit of this in Chapters 24 and 34 where it turns out that at his school before Blue Lock, Kuon was the only player that was truly interested in working hard to make it to Nationals. Thus, he develops a belief that his teammates are just dragging him down, which plays into why he betrayed Team Z as he believes that said team that he doesn't view to be skilled enough is just going to make him lose in the First Selection.
  • Beneath the Mask: On the surface, he seems like an all-around Nice Guy that acts as The Strategist that comes up with the plans for Team Z. In actuality, he's a scheming jerk who tries to screw over his whole team the moment he decided that Team Z wasn't skilled enough to make it to the second selection round as a team. He does get a bit of redemption in the end though, which doesn't make him a complete jerk.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Despite his betrayal, Kuon ends up having a redemption moment later on by saving Team Z from losing the game against Team V through a red card penalty. He tackles Nagi the moment it looked like the latter was going to score the goal that would have sealed Team Z's fate at being eliminated from Blue Lock.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He gets a lot of focus throughout the matches with Team W and Team V. This is mainly due to the fact that it's throughout this portion of the story that his Evil Plan is put into motion.
    • He gets to score the first 3 goals against Team W throughout Chapters 16 and 17. This was planned on purpose by Kuon where through their scheming, Team W pretty much let him score as the goals are necessary for him to be the one player that moves on to the Second Selection without the rest of Team Z.
    • In Chapter 34, despite only a few minutes remaining in the Team Z vs. Team V match, and him moving on to the Second Selection being all but assured at this point, Kuon decides to redeem himself for the team after witnessing how far Team Z's pushing themselves to win compared to how his past school teammates had no motivation to do so. As a result, Kuon takes a red card penalty by tackling Nagi the moment it looked like the latter was going to score the goal that would have sealed Team Z's defeat.
  • The Chessmaster: He tries to be this against Team Z coming up with plans behind-the-scenes in an attempt to screw them over in order to be the one player who moves on from Team Z by being the guy that scored the most goals. In the end, it doesn't work due to Team Z overcoming Kuon's betrayal tactics.
  • Dirty Coward: He runs away like a coward following the Team Z vs. Team W match rather than face the consequences for his scheming against his team. Though to be fair, the players of Team W were really beating him up under the belief that Kuon didn't give them all the information on Team Z.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Kuon first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His betrayal reveal in chapter 18 really shows the true colors that Kuon was hiding underneath his Nice Guy facade.
  • Evil Plan: Once Kuon starts to assume that Team Z isn't good enough to advance to the second selection round, he puts a plan in motion aiming to screw over his team while he continues on by himself by following the Blue Lock rule where the one who scores the most goals of his eliminated team gets to move on to the second selection without them. His plan involves working alongside Team W and Team V against his Team Z, but in the end, Kuon winds up advancing with Team Z anyway due to having a bit of a redemption moment during the match against Team V that helped Team Z secure the win.
  • Eyes Always Shut: A classic example of a character with his eyes always being shut. Only ever opening up at certain moments.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Feeling that Team Z is not going to last through the first section, Kuon betrays his team in an attempt to be the one member that makes it to the next selection round (There's a Blue Lock rule where the highest scorer of a team that failed the first section gets to move on to the second selection). Thus, he plays with Team W against Team Z, which basically put Team Z down two members, and then he remained off to the side during the Team Z vs. Team V match despite being on the field, which put Team Z down a member.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Kuon comes up with really lame nicknames for the strategies he comes up with for Team Z.
    • Against Team Y, he calls his plan where everyone takes turns to be the main center forward the "I'm the Next 9!" plan.
    • Against Team W, he calls his plan where 3 Team Z players group up to work together offensively for 30 minutes, and then swap out to the next 3-man-team that plays for 30 minutes as the "3x3 All Stars" plan.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After betraying Team Z, Kuon regains a bit of redemption near the end of the match against Team V by taking a red card penalty during a crucial moment where it looked like Nagi was going to secure the win for his team.
  • It's All About Me: After becoming convinced that Team Z can't survive through the First Selection, he ditches the idea of winning as a team in favor of himself as the only one to move on by being the one that scored the most goals for Team Z. He states to Isagi moments after the betrayal that his ego will be to win by betraying others.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • After the Team Z vs. Team W match concludes, the players of Team W proceed to beat Kuon up due to the game ending in a 4-4 tie rather than a victory for Team W. They beat Kuon up under the belief that Kuon schemed against them by by hiding Chigiri's running speed weapon from them that scored the last second goal for Team Z. Raichi also proceeds to beat him up during the lead-up break before the Team Z vs. Team V match.
    • In the Second Selection, Kuon's treacherous actions on Team Z comes back to bite him as its heavily implied that rumors spreading of what Kuon tried to pull in the First Selection led to no one wanting to team up with him. As a result, Kuon was forced to form a leftover 3-man-team with two of his lesser skilled Blue Lock teammates in Iemon and Imamura, which eventually resulted in Kuon's elimination.
  • Nice Guy: Isagi views him as such early on as Kuon's usually seen trying to help others, or act as the voice-of-reason to try to keep Team Z calm and organized... then the match against Team W happens.
  • Only Sane Man: He tries to play this role keeping Team Z calm and organized early on. That all changes when the match against Team W comes around.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Shows this off during his Traitor Shot at the end of chapter 17.
  • Put on a Bus: After surviving the First Selection, Kuon's not seen amongst the 35 strikers that made it to the end of the Second Selection. Thus, making it clear that he got eliminated and kicked out of Blue Lock at some point beforehand. It was revealed in the extra Volume content that Kuon made it through the 100 goal test, and formed a 3-man team with Iemon and Imamura, but all 3 of them ended up getting eliminated during the Second Selection matches.
  • Rank Up: Following the Tag entrance game, he starts off at Rank 268 on Team Z.
    • In the First Selection: Thanks to the 3 goals he scored against Team W, Kuon takes Isagi's spot at 265 at the top of Team Z, a status that pisses even Ego off due to Kuon's dirty methods to get there.
  • The Reveal: The hints were already pretty obvious in chapter 17, which in chapter 18, Isagi's the one who finally calls out Kuon for the possible betrayal after another "mistake" led to Team W tying up the game 3-3 after being up 3-0. The Wanima brothers are the first to point out that Isagi's accusation is correct, which Kuon decides to just go with it, and officially reveals himself as a traitor. Thus, resulting in him switching sides, and turning the game into a 12 on 10 match.
  • Rivals Team Up: Attempts this with other teams.
    • In order to screw over Team Z, Kuon offers a team-up to the Wanima brothers, which they accept. The deal being that in exchange for Kuon scoring 3 goals against Team W in order to have enough of a score lead to be the one player that moves to the Second Selection, Kuon will leak all of Team Z's strategies over to Team W so that they can have an easy win. It ended up not working due to Chigiri getting out of his funk during the match.
    • He attempts this again with Team V afterwards, but they refuse, which given that he's already been outed as Team Z's traitor, it results in Kuon just remaining on the sideline for the Team Z vs. Team V match hoping that just being down one man will be enough to screw over Team Z.
  • Signature Move: Due to his really long legs making him taller than a majority of Blue Lock's players, Kuon considers his jumping ability to be his main football weapon as he can reach up over a lot of other players for headers.
  • The Smart Guy: The one who comes up with the plans for Team Z.
  • The Smart One Turns Traitor: Given that Kuon's one of the smarter players on Team Z that ended up in the role of being The Strategist that comes up with the plans, of course he's the one thinking ahead that Team Z might not be skilled enough to make it to the Second Selection as a team, so he turns traitor, and tries to screw them over instead.
  • The Strategist: Following the loss to Team X, Kuon's the one who took on the task of coming up with strategies to better work together as a team. His strategies also come into play outside the team... but not to Team Z's benefit.
  • This Cannot Be!: Goes through this twice due to things not going according to plan.
    • During the match against Team W, Kuon after his betrayal couldn't believe it that Chigiri was hiding his speed weapon that allowed Team Z to end the game in a 4-4 tie rather than lose the game.
    • During the match against Team V, Kuon is left stunned in disbelief that Team Z is managing to keep up with the First Selection dominating Team V after Team Z managed to crawl back up from a 3-0 starting deficit to tie it back up 3-3. Kuon even starts yelling at Team V as to what the hell they're doing allowing this to happen.
  • Throwing the Fight: In order to have a nice lead as the highest-scoring player that would get to move on to the Second Selection if the team fails the First Selection, Kuon makes sure to secure himself 3 goals in the match against Team W (Isagi, Kunigami, and Gagamaru only had 1 goal each by this point). From this point on, Kuon starts to throw the game for Team Z by purposefully making mistakes to allow Team W to get back in the game and potentially win.
  • Traitor Shot: At the tail end of chapter 17, Isagi spots Kuon giving off a rather villainous smile shortly after Kuon had made several mistakes that turned their 3-0 lead against Team W into a smaller 3-2 lead half way through the game. This makes it clear that Kuon had decided to betray Team Z as he made the mistakes on purpose in order to help Team W win.
  • Turncoat: A part of Kuon's planning revolves around this. The moment he's scored enough goals that would make him the lone member of Team Z to move on to the next selection round if they lose, Kuon joins up with Team W in an attempt to get Team Z eliminated. In the end, it didn't work.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Seen sweaty and without his shirt in the locker room following Team Z's rough loss to Team X.
  • Walking Spoiler: There really isn't much you can say about Kuon without delving into spoilers. Hence, all the spoiler tags. Just that there's more to him than being the guy that comes up with strategies for Team Z.
  • We Wait: Given the 3 goals he scored against Team W in order to be the one player that would move on to the Second Selection if the overall team loses the First Selection, Kuon holds a 2 goal lead over other Team Z teammates that scored just 1 goal. Thus, his plan to try to screw over Team Z in the final match against Team V is to just stand by and wait hoping that putting Team Z down one player by doing nothing will be enough for Team Z to lose, and for his goal lead to hold to the end. However, seeing Team Z's determination to win causes Kuon to take a crucial penalty that allows Team Z to eventually win the game.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: There's a darker Kuon behind his Nice Guy routine. The character recap at the start of Chapter 23 even describes him as such. This is shown in story when it's revealed he struck a deal with Team W to let him score enough goals to advance alone in exchange for intel on the group's weapons and plans, implying that he took up this role explicitly to wait for an opportunity like this.

    Okuhito Iemon

Manga Debut: Chapter 2 note

Voiced by: Ryuunosuke Watanuki (Japanese), Anthony DiMascio (English), Héctor Estrada (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_iemontransparent.png

A large striker of Team Z who is basically the Jack of All Trades that can fill any role for the team. Given their need for a goalie, Iemon has no issue with taking on the role for Team Z.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Iemon gets a couple moments to shine as the goalie for Team Z.
    • In Chapter 19 when Team Z is down 4-3 against Team W, Iemon manages to swat away a crucial score attempt from Team W moments after Kuon's betrayal. He then follows it up with a Rousing Speech to get Team Z to continue playing despite now being down 2 players.
    • In chapter 35 during extra minutes of the Team Z vs. Team V match, he manages to block Reo's penalty kick due to catching on that given how they're all egotists trying to be the best striker, Reo would try to score it himself rather than pass it off.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Iemon first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Extreme Doormat: Since he's too much of a Nice Guy to reject it, Iemon accepts being pushed to play goalie for Team Z. It's also shown that he's unable to talk himself out of playing the position, which resulted in him playing goalie for the rest of the First Selection.
  • Flat Character: Being the most generic of Team Z, Iemon's one of the least characterized of the team, which results in him not standing out all that much. Though he does get to display some leadership qualities in the later First Selection matches where he was able to rally the team after they were thrown off by Kuon's betrayal.
  • The Generic Guy: There's not much to him except being the team's all around Nice Guy that can fill any role.
  • Informed Ability: He calls himself a Jack of All Trades type of player that can perform any role. However, you never get to see Iemon play offensively or defensively as he ended up playing as the goalie for the whole First Selection.
  • Jack of All Trades: Quite literally calls himself this when the team is discussing each other's main football weapons.
  • The Leader: Due to Kuon's betrayal, Iemon sort of falls into this role as the one keeping Team Z focused for the final First Selection match against Team V that Team Z needs to win in order to move on to the Second Selection.
  • Nice Guy: Despite being a forward like everyone else at Blue Lock, he fully accepts the role to be Team Z's goalie.
  • Put on a Bus: After surviving the First Selection, Iemon's not seen amongst the 35 strikers that made it to the end of the Second Selection. Thus, making it clear that he got eliminated and kicked out of Blue Lock at some point beforehand. It was revealed in the extra Volume content that Iemon made it through the 100 goal test, and formed a 3-man team with Kuon and Imamura, but all 3 of them ended up getting eliminated during the Second Selection matches.
  • Rousing Speech: After his crucial goal save in chapter 19. He goes off on a speech to rouse the confused Team Z following Kuon's betrayal as the game against Team W's not over yet. That they're only down 4-3, and that they need to go down fighting to at least make sure that they come away with a tie. Thanks to Chigiri having a last second ego reawakening, they manage to end the game in a 4-4 tie.
  • Signature Move: Believes himself to be a "Jack of All Trades" type player. If the team needs a role filled in, he will do his best to play out that role.
  • The Strategist: Following Kuon's betrayal, Iemon takes over as the guy making the plans for the final First Selection match against Team V. He comes up with a plan that relies on Kunigami, Chigiri, and Gagamaru at the front given that they've proven to be Team Z's best attackers up to this point.
  • Someone Has to Do It: Team Z required someone to play goalie, and he agreed to do so just because Imamura asked him to.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Along with Raichi, Iemon got pissed at Igarashi after the latter easily lost the ball trying to do things himself against Team X.

"Let's beat each other up, Isagi. Put both of our dreams on the line. Don't get scared. We're at Blue Lock."

One of the faster strikers on Team Z who relies on running past opponents from their blind spots. Naruhaya entered Blue Lock in the hopes of making a better life for his parentless siblings by becoming a professional football player. He also comes off as someone who seems to be enjoying his time at Blue Lock.

  • Bring It: During the Second Selection, Naruhaya's the one who takes the initiative to challenge Isagi to a match as he believes that Isagi's a fellow "mediocre" player that he can take. It's also because Naruhaya wants Nagi as a teammate.
  • Can't Catch Up: Naruhaya's biggest drawback is his inability to break out of being a "mediocre" player in order to be amongst the more genius players of Blue Lock. This ended up being his downfall in the Second Selection as Naruhaya failed to copy Isagi's "Direct Shot" to try to score the winning goal while Isagi does the opposite by managing to copy Naruhaya's ability to fly by his opponent in order for him to score the winning goal. Thus, showing that Isagi's capable of adapting a new play-style while Naruhaya can't.
  • A Death in the Limelight: Not so much "dying," but more an elimination in the limelight. A lot of Naruhaya's screentime and character focus happens during his Second Selection match where he's paired up with Baro to take on the Isagi/Nagi team, which eventually resulted in Naruhaya not being picked to continue on with them after the loss. Thus, resulting in Naruhaya's elimination from Blue Lock.
  • Determinator: He's determined to make his way through Blue Lock in order to make a better life for his parentless family.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Naruhaya first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Fragile Speedster: While nowhere near as quick as Chigiri, Naruhaya is still one of the faster players of Team Z.
  • Fun Personified: He's almost always shown to be having fun with a big smile on his face.
  • Goal in Life: Naruhaya's goal is to become a rich professional football player so that his parentless siblings can all be taken care of. He then gets the mail invite to Blue Lock.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this moment during the Second Selection when he failed to copy Isagi's "Direct Shot" during his attempt to score the winning goal.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Given Team Z's frustration after their bad loss to Team X, even the happy and excited Naruhaya was left angry at the result. He also has no issue with yelling back at the team's angry-boy, Raichi.
  • Out of Focus: Other than him being the team trouble-maker, such as eating Gagamaru's food, Naruhaya wasn't given any moments to shine as a football player during the First Selection. Naruhaya does eventually get some focus during the Second Selection, but he ends up getting eliminated shortly after.
  • Parental Abandonment: We learn in a flashback that his parents died in an accident, leaving him and his several siblings as orphans. He wants to become the number one player to earn money to ease some of his older sister's burden.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Could make a case that Naruhaya's the fun trouble-maker of Team Z, such as during lunch where he uses his speed to grab some of Gagamaru's food.
  • Put on a Bus: After surviving the First Selection, Naruhaya is eliminated by the Isagi/Nagi team in the Second Selection due to Naruhaya's teammate, Baro, being picked over him to become a member of the winning team. Thus, resulting in the lone Naruhaya getting kicked out of Blue Lock due to the rule that Second Selection teams being reduced to one player results in the one player being eliminated.
  • Rank Up:
    • In the First Selection: Naruhaya is at Rank 272 as a member of Team Z.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Naruhaya is named Blue Lock's Rank 38.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: During his Second Selection match against the Isagi/Nagi team, Naruhaya calls out Isagi for being a fellow "mediocre" player who is unable to do anything himself as he was usually relying on Bachira.
  • Running Gag: He tends to pull pranks on Gagamaru. More specifically, the moments where Naruhaya steals away Gagamaru's food only for the latter to chase after Naruhaya to try to get the food back.
  • Signature Move: Claims that his ability to fly across the field is his football weapon. He does this by running past opponents the moment that Naruhaya is out of sight in a player's blind spot.

    Yudai Imamura

Yudai Imamura

Manga Debut: Chapter 2 note

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_imamuratransparent.png

A striker of Team Z who makes up The Casanova of the team. Imamura was usually amongst the back line serving as one of Team Z's defensive players.

  • Blush Sticker: Compared to everyone else, Imamura's usually seen sporting these.
  • The Casanova: Imamura appears to be a bit of a womanizer as his first thought after Anri takes his phone away is disappointment that he won't be able to talk to any girls. He also compares football to being in love with girls.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He gets a bit of this in chapter 11 where his efforts against the Team Y ball carrier provided an opening for Gagamaru to steal the ball back for Team Z, and eventually led to Team Z's first score.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Imamura first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Flat Character: Imamura's one of the least characterized of the team, which results in him not standing out all that much compared to everyone else on the team other than being the guy that likes girls. The fact that his football weapon is just better speed and technique further plays into his blandness.
  • Informed Ability: He claims that speed and technique are his football weapons. However, he never shows to be anything of note in either area.
  • Oh, Crap!: Shows off a pretty big reaction when he realizes that Team Z is hugely outnumbered defensively during Team Y's offensive Last Ditch Move.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: He tends to be one of the more nicer and level-headed of the team, but given Team Z's frustration after their bad loss to Team X, even Imamura was left angry as he starts yelling back at Raichi.
  • Out of Focus: Amongst Team Z, Imamura easily had the least screen time. A major part of the problem is that Imamura got stuck playing on defense, so he never truly got any opportunity to show off. And unlike Raichi, who eventually proved himself to be a really capable defensive player in the match against Team V, Imamura was just...there.
  • Put on a Bus: After surviving the First Selection, Imamura's not seen amongst the 35 strikers that made it to the end of the Second Selection. Thus, making it clear that he got eliminated and kicked out of Blue Lock at some point beforehand. It was revealed in the extra Volume content that Imamura made it through the 100 goal test, and formed a 3-man team with Kuon and Iemon, but all 3 of them ended up getting eliminated during the Second Selection matches.
  • Signature Move: Claims his speed and technique at football to be this.

    Ryousuke Kira

Manga Debut: Chapter 1

Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura (Japanese), Blake Shepard (English), Elliot Leguizamo (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_kiratransparent.png

"There's no way I can accept those kinds of terms. I... I will not throw away my own team."

A second-year student who previously played as the star forward for the Matsukaze Kukuo football team. In the Saitama Prefecture High School Finals where the winner qualifies to play at Nationals, Kira's team comes out the winner over Isagi's Ichinan team. The result is Kira and his team qualifying for Nationals believing that their team play won the day.

Like all the other potential young forwards, Kira was scouted out by Ego to come to Blue Lock to train up and become the greatest striker. After hearing Ego's opening speech, Kira voices his disgust; not agreeing at all with the idea of making one's self look good at the expense of the team. Despite that, Kira chooses to go along with the Blue Lock project as a means to show that he's rejecting Ego's way of doing things.

  • The Ace: He's first introduced as the ace player of Matsukaze Kukuo High School football team leading them to a 2-0 win against Isagi's Ichinan football team. He's also viewed as one of the strongest players by Isagi when they reunite at Blue Lock, and Bachira even deems Kira as the overall strongest player of Team Z, which is why Bachira aimed to eliminate Kira during the Tag entrance game.
  • Advertised Extra: In the promotion for the Anime, Kira is often featured in promotional material. However, this left out and hides the fact that Kira is the first to be Put on the Bus very quickly among everyone in Team Z as after his elimination, Kira has yet to make another appearance.
  • Beneath the Mask: He seemed like a relatively Nice Guy at first, only for Kira to show a more nasty side of him after he completely falls apart the moment he was eliminated from Blue Lock.
  • Berserk Button: Given how Kira is all about Team Spirit, everything about Ego's It's All About Me methods seems to really strike a nerve with him. Especially since Kira views Ego's words as an insult to Japan's current U-20 football team who've gotten as far as they have thanks to team play. The primary reason Kira even decided to go along with Blue Lock was just to make it clear to Ego that he doesn't agree with the latter's ideal.
  • Bishie Sparkle: Tends to gives off such a sparkle, such as during the High School Finals post-game interview, and when he met up with Isagi outside the JFA building.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: He really starts dropping F-bombs during his enraged elimination ranting.
  • Curse Cut Short: On the verge of dropping a an F-bomb after Isagi eliminates him at the end of the Tag entrance game, Ego appears on the television behind him to cut it short. That still doesn't stop Kira from cursing afterwards however.
  • Death Glare: He gives Isagi one final enraged glare before he's forced out of Blue Lock for good.
  • Determinator: Deconstructed. The main reason that Kira decides to take on Blue Lock is to reject Ego and his It's All About Me methods, and that said methods is not going destroy his future...it didn't go well for him. He now has nothing left for him regarding football.
  • Didn't See That Coming: He never saw the elimination to Isagi coming since Kira believed that he was on friendly terms with him.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: He's unable to understand why Ego would suddenly end his football career when Kira's already known as Japan's "National Treasure."
  • Fatal Flaw: Ego considers Kira's defeatist attitude to be this as the main reason for why the latter lost the Tag entrance game. After Isagi smashed Kira in the head with the soccer ball to make Kira the "it," the ball drops to the ground and there's still 1 second remaining for Kira to save himself from elimination by quickly hitting the ball at the injured Igarashi. However, Kira just stood there in shock and missed the chance he had to save himself as he had already accepted defeat. Thus, Ego claims that a forward is not a true striker unless you're fighting down to the last second, which Kira clearly did not.
  • First-Episode Spoiler: Kira is the first of the named casts to be kicked out of the Blue Lock project as early as the second chapter of the manga (First episode of the anime).
  • Foil: He's this towards coach Jinpachi Ego. Kira being all about team play makes it clear during Ego's opening speech that he doesn't agree with Ego's methods of only having one star player that puts himself over his teammates. This of course puts them at odds.
  • Hope Spot: Kira has a moment near the end of the Tag entrance game where he feels relieved, because it looks like Bachira missed hitting him with the soccer ball. However, the miss turned out to be a pass to Isagi, who uses the opportunity to smash Kira in the head with the ball. The result is Kira being the game's final "it" that loses the game.
  • In-Universe Nickname: For being one of Japan's rising young star football players, he became known as Japan's "National Treasure."
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: He doesn't take Ego's It's All About Me speech all that well viewing it as an insult to the players of Japan's pro U-20 football team, who've gotten as far as they have thanks to their team play.
  • Nice Guy: Portrayed as such getting along quite well with his teammates, as well as with Isagi when they reunite...and then he got eliminated from Blue Lock.
  • Put on a Bus: He gets ousted from Blue Lock as early as the 2nd chapter of the story due to being the one from Team Z that ends up failing the Tag entrance game. He didn't take it well.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Kira completely explodes in anger after Ego announces that he's been eliminated from Blue Lock.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: The whole point of Kira's quick exit from Blue Lock was to make it clear that this story is not a typical team coming together sports manga story. This story is more about pushing yourself forward over others rather than working as a team to claim victory.
  • Sore Loser: He explodes in anger following his elimination in the Tag entrance game finding it unbelievable that Ego would choose to get rid of someone as good as him, even claiming that Isagi or Igarashi should be gone since they're much weaker players. Ego wasn't fazed at all.
  • Suddenly Shouting: After exploding in anger over his elimination, he starts yelling back at Ego.
  • Team Spirit: A firm believer of winning as a team to come out the victor, which puts him at odds with Ego's It's All About Me methods.
  • This Cannot Be!: He really doesn't take his elimination from Blue Lock all that well becoming enraged and unable to understand why Ego would choose to ban one of its best up-and-coming players from ever playing football for Japan's national team.
  • Walking Spoiler: By virtue of the First-Episode Spoiler regarding how quickly he is Put on the Bus from the story as a whole.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: His elimination from Blue Lock resulted in this towards Isagi and Ego.
    • Despite believing that he was on friendly terms with Isagi, Kira was left in a state of disbelief unable to understand why Isagi chose to smash him in the face with the soccer ball to make him the final "it" of the Tag entrance game; resulting in Kira's elimination.
    • He also does this towards Ego calling the latter's actions idiotic for choosing to eliminate one of Japan's best up-and-coming players just because he lost a stupid game of Tag.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Kira's firm belief in Team Spirit would have made him a better fit in a regular sports Shounen manga with a team coming story. But unfortunately for him, the story of Blue Lock as a whole is not a team coming story and he falls short above all the other participants, all of whom eventually show to have their own drives and ego to surpass and better their own selves as players in general in contrast to Kira.

Team X (First Selection)

    Shoei Baro

Shoei Baro

Manga Debut: Chapter 5

Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe (Japanese), Matthew David Rudd (English), Alejandro Orozco (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_baro.png

"We're not here to make friends... you're only here to make me shine. After all, on this pitch...I am the one true King."

A large and imposing football forward who views himself greater than everyone else around him. Being the "King" of the football field while everyone else around him is just the trash "peasants" that are supposed to follow behind his play. Baro quickly shows off as one of Blue Lock's best players when his play easily establishes himself as the leader of the disorganized Team X; leading his team to an easy 5-1 victory against the still disorganized Team Z

Being the obvious top scorer of Team X, Baro eventually gets to move on to the Second Selection. From there, Baro tends to be one of Blue Lock's more noteworthy strikers as he ends up developing a chaotic and unpredictable play-style that revolves around surprising everyone on the football field by suddenly stealing the ball from his teammates.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Baro chooses to play for Italy's Ubers team.

  • The Ace:
    • A really skilled and strong football player who quickly establishes himself as the star of Team X that the rest of the team decides to organize and follow behind as they easily beat Team Z. The Episode Nagi spinoff makes it clear that Baro's X teammates came to hate his solo play, and tried to play the rest of the First Selection games without him. However, Baro continued to score goals in losing efforts, which resulted in him far outscoring the rest of the team to be the one X player who moved on to the Second Selection.
    • In the Neo EGOIST League, Snuffy strategizes around him as the team's star forward, which allows for Baro to score many goals for Ubers.
  • Animal Motifs: The story makes him out to be a hungry predator, always on the lookout for the ball for him to steal so he can score goals. Since he refers to himself as a "King", he's usually associated with a lion. What he doesn't like being called is a "gorilla", which Tokimitsu kept doing during their match.
  • The Apprentice: In the Neo EGOIST League, Italy's Marc Snuffy takes a huge liking to him to the point of basically forcing Baro to become his apprentice.
  • Badass Boast: After scoring his first easy goal against Team Z, Baro makes it clear to everyone around him that he's the King of the pitch, and that all the trash Peasant players around him are only here to make him shine.
  • Berserk Button: Being one upped by his fellow peers, particularly when they don't pass him the ball to score or he keeps getting interrupted from scoring. Also insinuating that he has it easy, when he struggles and pushes himself towards greatness just like anyone else, is another way to get under his skin, as poor Tokimitsu found out.
  • Character Development: Isagi being on the verge of "devouring" him during the Second Selection causes Baro to get knocked off his high-horse where despite being the King, he admits that Isagi gave him his first feeling of defeat at the time. Thus, Baro comes to respect Isagi as a worthy opponent, and they even begin talking to each other more normally rather than Baro always looking down on everyone. This also causes Baro to change up his play-style in order to counter and possibly devour Isagi back somewhere down the line. As part of the Italy Ubers, he has learned to pass the ball to his fellow members instead of always hogging the ball and have them work in tandem with him in order to score goals with his new weapon, the "Predator's Eye".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Baro alone crushes Team Z in the first match of Blue Lock's First Selection due to Team Z never being able to get themselves organized until they managed to score a goal near the end of the game... after Baro had already easily scored 5 back-to-back goals for Team X.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The Team Z vs. Team X match quickly establishes Baro as a huge imposing threat as his play alone brought Team X easy victory against the disorganized Team Z.
  • Genius Bruiser: He's a large and muscular football player along with having the intellect on knowing what to do when it comes to playing football, and do it really well.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He's got a cross-shaped scar above his left ear. Leans more on the Evil Scar side given that he plays the villain role during games.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • The Second Selection shows that he's actually someone that likes to keep his home, or places he stays at, nice and clean.
    • In the two weeks day off after the match against U-20, Baro is revealed to be skilled in bowling and he bowls in his off time.
  • Humble Pie: Isagi almost devouring him during the Second Selection really knocked Baro off his "King" high-horse. So much so that Baro comes to view Isagi as a Worthy Opponent, and even engages in more friendly conversations with Isagi during their downtime.
  • It's All About Me: For Baro, everyone else is just the lowly Peasants that needs to make himself, the King of the football field, look better. This was challenged in the second selection by Isagi, forcing him into a momentary Break the Haughty before he recovers and declare Isagi as his Worthy Opponent.
  • Large and in Charge: He's the biggest and most skilled player of Team X, which led to the rest of the team following his lead. Both Noa and Snuffy consider Baro's potential as a striker to being among the best in the world.
  • The Leader: The players of Team X all end up organizing and following behind his lead for the remainder of the First Selection after Baro shows himself off at the start of the game against Team Z. Later he becomes the undisputed leader of the Italy Ubers, with all of their plays centered around giving Baro opportunities to score goals, just the way he likes it.
  • Neat Freak: Frequently clashes with Nagi over the latter's sloppiness. His Q&A Trivia at Blue Lock Official twitter reveals that he hates untidyness and his type of person is someone who is good at cleaning and has good hygiene.
  • The Nicknamer: He calls other players his "peasants" as they're the ones who are supposed to make himself, the "King," look better.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite Baro being serious most of the time, even he can be caught up in the silliness of his fellow peers:
    • The most common reaction from Baro is him freaking out whenever someone is "messy" in front of him, causing him to blow his top and demanding that the party in question clean up. This is treated comically, as the offenders in question either comply with what he says reluctantly, refuse to do it out of annoyance, or somehow make the mess worse.
    • During the U20 match, Baro scores the third goal and he rips off his shirt in celebration, caught up in the hype of the situation. The referee gives him a yellow card because of it, causing him to comically pull a dumb irritated look as a result.
    • When everyone from Blue Lock has a day off, the majority of the characters stumbles on Baro and his hobby of bowling. He accuses them of "invading" his sanctuary and tells them to scram, which they don't.
    • Baro meets Isagi again in their rematch during the Neo EGOIST League and in his eagerness to say "hello", Baro accidentally headbutts his rival. Both try to maintain an air of indifference...before both clutch their heads in pain.
    • Baro stated that he got red highlights in his hair in celebration of the world considering his worth to be 100 million yen but Aiku, Jyubei and Niko stated that he really did it to show off to Isagi, stating that rather than a King, he's like a "princess" getting ready for the ball. Barou ends up comically choking out both Niko and Jyubei in response, with Aiku barely getting away.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Always has this confident facial expression throughout the First Selection due to being the best player of Team X. It goes away in the Second Selection after Isagi "devours" him, which changes up Baro's character.
  • Power Levels: Starting from the Neo EGOIST League, power levels are introduced where football club sponsors around the world take part in an auction to bid on and finance the players that take part in Blue Lock. The higher the bid determining who the sponsors consider to be the strongest.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Ubers vs. F.C. Barcha match, Baro starts off with a ¥100,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Ubers vs. Bastard München match, Baro's bid is increased to ¥130,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Ubers vs. Manshine City match, Baro's bid is increased to ¥150,000,000.
  • Precision F-Strike: His first line is ordering Isagi to get out of his face or he will f#$king end him.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Baro is named Blue Lock's Rank 18.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: At the end of the match against Team Z, Baro calls Isagi talentless, and not having what it takes to be a true striker, for the chokejob in front of the goal where Isagi passed the soccer ball off to Kunigami rather than scoring the goal himself.
  • The Rival:
    • Starting from their team-up during the Second Selection, Baro and Nagi tend to get under each others skins a lot. The Episode Nagi spin-off showed that their rivalry began as early as the Team V vs. Team X match where they're seen talking trash to one another.
    • He and Isagi also become this to one another after Baro comes to respect Isagi as a Worthy Opponent during the Second Selection.
  • Self-Applied Nickname: Calls himself the "King" that all the other "peasant" players must play for.
  • Signature Move: Due to his physicality, Baro makes for one of the strongest offensive chargers amongst all of Blue Lock's strikers. Once he gets within 28 meters of the goal post, his shot is almost guaranteed to get in.
  • Sole Survivor: Baro's the only player of Team X that passed the First Selection due to being the team's player who scored the most goals.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Baro starts to fall into this role from the second selection onwards once he develops a playstyle that relies on him stealing the ball away from his teammates in order to catch the opposing team off-guard.
  • Took a Level in Badass: His path changes massively from the Second Selection onward.
    • Rather than be devoured by Isagi when it looked like such a case was going to happen during the Second Selection, Baro refuses to give-up, which results in him developing a new "dark" play-style that revolves around him being the unpredictable Joker on the football field that steals from his teammates when everyone least expects it, even the opposing team.
    • He gets trained up by Italy's Marc Snuffy during the Neo EGOIST League to the point of learning how to use "Predator Eye;" a play-style where he shoots at the goal from the blind spots that goalies can't see on the field, such as when their view is being blocked by other players between the goalie and shooter.
  • Verbal Tic: Has a habit of calling others "donkey" and referring to himself as "King". When this is turned on him by Isagi, it pisses Baro off to no end, with him forcing Isagi to apologize and take back the insult. Luckily, this leads to Baro's Character Development and soon "donkey" almost becomes an Insult of Endearment towards Isagi.
  • Worthy Opponent: After their team-up during the Second Selection, Baro comes to respect and view Isagi as the main competition that he needs to devour in order to become better. It's even to the point that he just views Rin as another Isagi.

Team Y (First Selection)

    Ikki Niko

Ikki Niko

Manga Debut: Chapter 10 note

Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (Japanese), David Matranga (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_nikotransparent.png

"You cannot win against me. I'm the one controlling this game."

The striker of Team Y who serves as its brains and shadow leader behind the team's ace, Okawa. Niko eventually takes over as the team's top scorer in order to be the one that moves on to the second selection round. From there, Niko develops more into a defensive player who finds enjoyment in breaking strikers.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Niko chooses to play for Italy's Ubers team.

  • Always Someone Better: A lot of his development centers around how he's basically a lesser version of Isagi that's been one step behind the latter. Becoming an It's All About Me kind of player, Isagi decided that at Ego's entrance speech while it took Niko the First Selection matches to start to go down that path. Him acquiring "Metavision" happens in a later Neo EGOIST League match compared to when Isagi came to understand it.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: In the same vein as Isagi, which makes him the shadow leader of Team Y. Unlike Isagi whose skills and talents are illustrated as puzzles, Niko has a Watchtower Motif.
  • Break the Badass: He takes the loss to Isagi and Team Z pretty hard to the point that he was reduced to tears. Though he does become a better egotist player because of it.
  • Character Development:
    • The loss to Team Z, and his rivalry in the match with Isagi specifically, causes Niko to take the It's All About Me mantra more seriously as instead of being the brains for the team, he takes over as the main scorer of Team Y in order to be the team's one player that moves on to the second selection.
    • By the time of the match against U-20 Japan, Niko starts to enjoy playing as a defensive player as he seems to get a kick out of messing with strikers.
  • Character Tics: He tends to make an "okay hand gesture" in front of his watchful eye to make it clear that he's the one in control.
  • Counter-Attack: The strategies Niko comes up with rely on counter-attacking where after constantly defending, the team utilizes Okawa to go down and score once the team sees an opening to get the ball to him.
  • The Dreaded: Midway through the Team Z vs. Team Y match-up, Isagi's the one who catches on that it's not Okawa that they need to pay attention to, but the shadow leader, Niko.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Niko first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: The defining feature of Niko's character design. Other than a few rare moments, his eyes are always covered by his bangs.
  • Fatal Flaw: He's basically pre-Blue Lock Isagi before the latter became a follower of the It's All About Me mantra, which in the Last Ditch Move against Team Z, it resulted in Niko trying to pass it to Okawa in front of the goal rather than take the shot himself. Given that Isagi experienced such a mistake, he managed to steal the pass before it got to Okawa, which eventually led to Isagi scoring the game winner for Team Z. Like Isagi, Niko gets over this flaw becoming a follower of It's All About Me afterwards.
  • Foregone Conclusion: In the Episode Nagi spinoff, it was already known that Niko's Second Selection team with Tsurugi and Hiiragi was going to lose the 3v3 match against the Nagi/Chigiri/Baro team since in the main series, the latter team ended the Second Selection with Tsurugi as a new teammate that they stole away from another team.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: He injures his foot blocking one of Shidou's shots during the Blue Lock vs. U-20 Japan match, which forces coach Ego to sub him out for Reo.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Like Isagi, Niko has a good sense of what goes on around the soccer field. This allows him to eventually unlock "Metavision."
  • Last Ditch Move: One of Niko's strategies is to have almost everyone on Team Y go on an all-out-counterattack offensive in a last minute, which they use if the game happens to be tied, and need to get a last minute score in.
  • The Leader: During the match against Team Z, it's discovered that Niko is The Smart Guy that is shadow leading Team Y behind Okawa.
  • The Man Behind the Man: On Team Y, he's this to Okawa. Okawa looking like the leader due to being Team Y's best player only for it to turn out that Niko is in the shadows as the true leader of the team.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Given their similar play-styles, Niko's pretty much told this by Isagi in the final moments of the Team Z vs. Team Y match due to Niko having a moment where he tried to pass it off to Okawa rather than taking the shot himself. Something that Isagi experienced before coming to Blue Lock that led him to going down the It's All About Me path.
F.C. Barcha match, Niko starts off with a ¥23,500,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Ubers vs. Bastard München match, Niko's bid is increased to ¥30,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Ubers vs. Manshine City match, Niko's bid is increased to ¥40,000,000.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Niko is named Blue Lock's Rank 63. He's also one of the 35 survivors that eventually passed the Second Selection, which places him within the top-35.
  • The Rival: He has a bit of this with Isagi as two strikers who utilize their field vision senses to act as the brains for the team. This especially becomes the case when Isagi catches on that the real player to watch out for on Team Y is Niko, which results in the two of them dueling throughout the rest of the Team Z vs. Team Y match.
  • Signature Move: To make up for his lack of speed and strength, Niko claims that the plans he thinks up using his eyes and mind are this, such as knowing exactly where on the field he needs to be (eyes), and manipulating where others on the field will end up (mind). Unsurprisingly, that leads to him obtaining Metavision in the Neo EGOIST League arc.
  • The Smart Guy: He's the one that comes up with the plans for Team Y.
  • The Strategist: Niko's the one who comes up with the strategies for Team Y. Though after his team falls behind in the wins department, he falls out of this position as it becomes clear to Niko that his only chance of making it to the second selection is to be the team's top scorer, which he pulls off by overtaking Okawa in points.
  • Sole Survivor: Of Team Y. After Team Y's loss against Team Z, he has become inspired by Isagi to score as much as possible and also aiding the team in the matches after and became the only player from Team Y to get past the first selection.
  • Team Spirit: Despite being in Blue Lock, Niko still appears to follow this at first as most of his play-style relies on helping Okawa score the most goals. He switches to It's All About Me once he realizes that he needs to be the one Team Y player that scores the most goals in order to make it to the second selection round.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Losing the Team Y vs. Team Z match, and Isagi specifically, left a massive impact on him to change himself for the better by becoming more of an offensive player that does the work himself.
    • Since he basically turns into a defensive version of Isagi down the line, Niko eventually unlocks "Metavision" by the time of the Neo EGOIST League.

    Hibiki Okawa

Hibiki Okawa

Manga Debut: Chapter 10 note

Voiced by: Yūki Shin (Japanese), Monty Thompson (English)

A striker of Team Y who's built up to be its best player. However, Okawa ended up not making it out of the first selection due to Niko taking over as the team's top scorer.

  • The Ace: When Okawa was first introduced, he was known as the “Ace of Senno High School,” which results in him being seen as the best player on Team Y.
  • Counter-Attack: A part of Team Y's strategy surrounds this for Okawa where they wait it out until there's an opening to pass it to Okawa, who then charges to the opposing goal to utilize his Signature Move for the easy score.
  • A Day in the Limelight: In chapter 11, he's the one who gets to score a goal against Team Z.
  • Delinquent Hair: The defining detail of his character design is his delinquent-like mohawk hair.
  • The Dreaded: Built up to be this for Team Y given Okawa's high reputation before coming to Blue Lock. Though it's eventually discovered that the one to really look out for on Team Y the whole time was Niko.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Okawa can be seen amongst the gathered group of 300 forwards when Isagi and Kira first arrive at the JFA building for Ego's opening speech.
  • In-Universe Nickname: Had a reputation before Blue Lock as the “Ace of Senno High School.”
  • Oh, Crap!: Shows a major reaction at the tail end of the match against Team Z after Isagi steals a crucial pass meant for Okawa that sends Team Z back on the offensive against a undefended net due to Team Y's Last Ditch Move that sent almost their whole team forward.
  • Put on a Bus: Since Niko ended up scoring the most goals for Team Y, the result was Okawa being ejected from Blue Lock.
  • Satellite Character: Okawa basically had to be sacrificed in order to push forward Niko's development.
  • Signature Move: Has a super-strong shooting technique that made him the top scorer of Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture before coming to Blue Lock.
  • We Wait: Part of Team Y's planning involves Okawa waiting it out until there's an opening for him to counterattack.

Team W (First Selection)

    Junichi Wanima

Junichi Wanima

Manga Debut: Chapter 16 note

Voiced by: Ryōta Suzuki (Japanese), Chris Guerrero (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_junichiwanimatransparent.png

(Junichi makes an angry facial expression)
Keisuke: "Hey DF line!! How about you fuckin' do your jobs and stop them?! Idiots!! That's what my big bro says!"

The silent older brother of the trouble-making Wanima twins that both play for Team W. The two of them share a connection with Chigiri of Team Z due to them having all been on the same Rajitsu Tech football team before coming to Blue Lock. However, the Wanima twins being the seniors were not happy that their role as the stars of the team were taken by Chigiri, who was a newcomer junior. Once they reunite at Blue Lock, they continue to give Chigiri a rough time. Between the brothers, Junichi ended up scoring the most goals of Team W to move on to the Second Selection.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Junichi chooses to play for England's Manshine City team.

  • Backstory: The match against Team Z goes into the backstory of the Wanima brothers before they came to Blue Lock. They were senior players at Rajitsu Tech, and at the top of the football team hierarchy, but were quickly pushed aside due to not being able to match the speed of their junior, Chigiri. Once Chigiri's ACL tear happened, the Wanima brothers used every moment they could to taunt and treat Chigiri like crap just to make sure that he never recovers. The result was Chigiri becoming the Broken Bird that he is at the start of the series.
  • Bash Brothers: Both he and his brother aren’t afraid to get violent both on and off the soccer field as seen when they try to break Chigiri and when they start beating up Kuon.
  • Berserk Button: He gets really pissed off about anything related to fouls, whether it be fouls that get called on him or ones that he feels should have been called done to him.
  • The Bully: He and Keisuke are this towards Chigiri due to them being jealous of Chigiri taking over as the star player on the Rajitsu Tech football team.
  • A Day in the Limelight: They get some moments during the Team Z vs. Team W match due to them going along with Kuon's Evil Plan of screwing over Team Z. Throughout chapters 17 and 18, the brothers manage to score 4 goals against Team Z using their joint playstyle.
  • Dirty Coward: Near the end of the Team Z vs. Team W match once it became clear that Chigiri was over his Broken Bird status, the Wanima brothers resorted to trying to foul him just to make sure that he doesn't end the game in a 4-4 tie. They failed.
  • The Dreaded: The brothers together serves as the best players of Team W that the other teams have to watch out for. Chapter 16 quite literally starts with Team Z studying up on the two of them before their match, which they note that the brothers' joint play-style will be a force to be reckoned with.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Junichi first appears alongside his brother in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: More jerk than evil, but the Wanima twins really care for each other with Junichi himself being saddened that Keisuke had to leave after the first selection and vowed to survive in Blue Lock longer for both their sakes.
  • Facial Dialogue: He speaks in facial expressions as his way to communicate with Keisuke.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: At Rajitsu Tech before coming to Blue Lock, he and Keisuke grew jealous and angry at Chigiri for taking their spot as the star for the football team. It's why they went to maximum effort to make sure that Chigiri never fully recovers from his ACL tear.
  • Jerkass: While they're nothing more than trouble-maker twins that just seem to enjoy trash-talking their opponents, their treatment of Chigiri is highly questionable. He and Junichi go about treating Chigiri like crap just to make sure that he doesn't fully heal mentally from his ACL tear. All because they were jealous of Chigiri taking their spot as the football star at Rajitsu Tech.
  • Never My Fault: They blame Kuon for not warning them about Chigiri, who ends up tying the game that was supposed to be a victory for Team W. Considering that they were Chigiri's teammates, they should have been the ones to warn the rest of the team about him.
  • Perpetual Frowner: His brother is the smiler while Junichi's the frowner. Though Junichi does tend to smile when he gets excited about something.
Paris X Gen match, Junichi starts off with a ¥4,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Manshine City vs. Ubers match, Junichi's bid is increased to ¥8,200,000.
  • The Quiet One: Junichi tends to be the quiet one that Keisuke usually has to speak for.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Junichi is named Blue Lock's Rank 74. He's also one of the 35 survivors that eventually passed the Second Selection, which places him within the top-35.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The calmer Blue to Keisuke's more outgoing red. However, if Junichi gets really excited, he tends to act more like Keisuke.
  • Rivals Team Up: In order to screw over Team Z, Kuon offers a team-up to the Wanima brothers, which they accept.
  • Siblings in Crime: Beating up Kuon would definitely constitute a crime. They also kicked Chigiri down after Chigiri returned from his ACL tear surgery.
  • Sibling Team: Much of their football styles revolves around their teamwork.
  • Signature Move: Together with his twin brother, Junichi, their signature weapon is their eye contact with one another where they can tell what the other brother wants during the game. In addition, they have their pass-and-go playstyle where they perfectly work off one another to make their own unique joint playstyle.
  • Sir Swearsalot: He'll curse whenever he's angry about something, but given that he doesn't talk, Keisuke's usually saying the swears for him at everyone.
  • Slasher Smile: Shows off a major one in chapter 16 after his brother reminds him of their days playing with Chigiri.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Given that he and Keisuke are twin brothers, they have similar details in their character designs, but not to the point of being Always Identical Twins. Their eyes and hair are the most striking similarities. Though Junichi has a spikier top of the hair.
  • Trash Talk: Does this towards Chigiri given their past. Though Keisuke does the talking for him.
  • Trickster Twins: He and Keisuke relish in taunting and messing with people that they believe they got a leg up on. Especially when they're going along with Kuon's Evil Plan.

  • Distinctive Appearances: Unlike his brother, he has hair highlights. In the anime, they're colored green.
  • The Dreaded: The brothers together serves as the best players of Team W that the other teams have to watch out for. • Ironic Echo: After Chigiri tore his ACL, Keisuke throws Chigiri's comment about the Wanima Brothers not having talent to beat him back at Chigiri claiming that Chigiri no longer has talent due to the injury taking away Chigiri's strongest weapon, his speed.
  • Motor Mouth: He tends to talk a lot. Especially given that he has to talk for his quiet brother as well.
  • Never My Fault: Like his brother and the rest of the team, he blames Kuon for the tie in the game against Team Z, never mind that he and his brother knew about Chigiri's capacities before his injury as they were teammates.
  • Perpetual Smiler: His brother's the frowner while Keisuke's the smiler.
  • Put on a Bus: He's eliminated after the First Selection due to his brother scoring the most goals for Team W.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The outgoing red to Junichi's more calm blue. However, if Junichi gets really excited, he tends to act more like Keisuke.

Team V (First Selection)

    Seishiro Nagi

Seishiro Nagi

Manga Debut: Chapter 22 note

Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki (Japanese), Bryson Baugus (English), Héctor Ireta de Alba (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_nagitransparent_2.png

A slacker who doesn't take things all that seriously. In the past, Nagi went to the same school as Reo, which Nagi kept to himself by playing video-games on his phone. One day, Reo witnesses Nagi trap-catch his dropped phone on instinct with his foot as if Nagi's using a football trapping skill. As a result, Reo's convinced that Nagi's an unpolished gem, and forces the latter along for the two of them to play football together despite Nagi having never played any real life athletic sports in his life.

Eventually, Nagi and Reo get the invite to Blue Lock, and manage to both end up on Team V. Along with Tsurugi, the 3 of them show themselves off as the strongest players of the team in the First Selection. Nagi continues to be the slacker of the team, but remains one of the best players due to his football trapping skills. He eventually ends up developing a rivalry with Isagi during Team V's final match against Team Z. So much so that Nagi gains a desire to play football through Blue Lock by teaming up with Isagi for the Second Selection. Thus, leaving Reo behind as the one that now has to catch up to Nagi.

By the end of the Second Selection, Nagi turns out to be so talented that he got named Blue Lock's 6th best overall player. As a result, Nagi gets paired up with Yukimiya as the leaders of Team C for the U-20 tryout matches.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Nagi chooses to play for England's Manshine City team due to a really good football trapper, Bergkamp, having played there.

Due to his Breakout Character status amongst readers of the series, Nagi was eventually given his spin-off series. He serves as The Protagonist of Blue Lock - Episode Nagi, which follows him and his Team V's journey through Blue Lock.
  • Accidental Athlete: Nagi becomes a football player because Reo saw him jump from the stairs to catch his phone and saw that he has good reflexes and a potential to become a great player.
  • The Ace:
    • Nagi's easily the best player of Team V as he was the team's top scorer.
    • In the Neo EGOIST League, Chris and Agi try to establish Nagi to be this for Manshine City. Nagi opened up in a big way by scoring a four volley super-goal against Bastard München that netted him a high starting auction salary. However, Nagi's refusal to develop further than his connection to Reo resulted in a drop off to the point that he scored no goals in the following matches against Paris X Gen and Ubers, and his auction salary was greatly reduced as a result. Due to Nagi's drop off, Chigiri ends up being viewed as Manshine City's ace, which is shown by the televised marketing for Manshine City vs. Ubers displaying Chigiri vs. Baro as the opposing stars.
  • Backstory: Chapter 23 delves into his backstory where Nagi and Reo went to the same school before they came to Blue Lock. Reo, who's seeking out an unpolished gem that will help him win the World Cup, stumbles across Nagi playing a video-game on his hand-held in their school stairwell. Reo accidentally bumps into him, which causes Nagi's hand-held to go flying. However, Nagi manages to catch his hand-held before it smashes to the ground utilizing a football trapping skill on instinct. This is despite the fact that Nagi's never played an athletic sport in his life. As a result, Reo becomes convinced that Nagi's an unpolished gem, and forcibly convinces Nagi into playing football with him in order to turn Nagi into a great player.
  • Bash Brothers:
    • He and Reo are usually always playing off one another.
    • He's this with Isagi during the Second Selection where Nagi desires to play with Isagi after the two of them develop a friendly rivalry from the Team Z vs. Team V match.
  • Breakout Character: Ever since their introduction, both Reo and Nagi grew very popular among readers for their shared backstory, appealing designs, and contrasting personalities that give them a unique dynamic. This all culminates to the two having just as much screen time and importance as the main four Team Z players (Isagi, Bachira, Kunigami and Chigiri) and eventually receiving a spin-off centered about them, with the story being the events of Blue Lock from Nagi's Point of View and what led to Nagi sticking by Reo's side.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy:
    • Nagi has a strong talent and innate skills that would make him a good fit for football but Nagi himself has no interest in anything troublesome and he is only interested in playing because Mikage got him invested. This completely changes after his defeat against Team Z with Isagi.
    • The "Additional Time" skit from the anime's 20th episode shows him to be this in academics as well (at least when it comes to World History). Despite sleeping through all of his classes, it's shown that he's second only to Reo when it comes to test scores, to the surprise of Reo.
  • Character Development: A lot of Nagi's character development throughout the series is him getting out of his slacker routine to become interested in football as he makes his way through Blue Lock. Starting from the Team Z vs. Team V match, Nagi becomes a lot more motivated and determined to take football seriously due to the friendly rivalry that he develops with Isagi. It starts after Nagi spots for the first time Reo struggling at what to do after Team Z managed to tie the game back up against them 3-3, which for the first time ever, Nagi takes the initiative to move first rather than having Reo tell him what to do.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Nagi doesn't look very threatening, always appears half asleep by default, and knew nothing about football before meeting Reo. Despite all of this, he is borderline unstoppable on the field with his trapping skills and is practically guaranteed to score at least one goal per game.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • He is the main protagonist of the titular Episode Nagi spin off.
    • In chapters 26 and 27, Nagi scores the first 2 goals against Team Z after showing off his trapping skills for the first time, and team play with Reo, to start the game up 2-0.
    • In chapter 32, Nagi sees Reo struggling for the first time in his life at football, which Nagi takes the initiative for the first time ever as he starts to realize that football is interesting, and desires for Reo to give the ball to him. The result after Reo gets him the ball is Nagi pulling off an improbable trap-and-score next to Team Z's goal that gave Team V back the 4-3 lead.
  • The Dreaded: The trio of Nagi/Reo/Tsurugi are built up as the best of Team V. By the time of the final First Selection match against Team Z, Nagi had already scored 7 goals throughout the previous matches.
    • The duo of Nagi and Reo even more so due to their history and teamplay.
  • Friendly Rivalry: He has this with Isagi ever since Nagi wanted the two of them to play together during the Second Selection, and because Nagi respects Isagi as a football player.
  • Hands-Off Parenting: Nagi's Q&A Trivia released in the Blue Lock official twitter reveals that his parents are Laisses-Faire parents with Nagi himself being fairly self-sufficient. Episode Nagi also reveals that Nagi is living alone and renting an apartment close to his highschool because of it.
  • Hidden Depths: Episode Nagi reveals that he takes care of a cactus plant he named "Scissors".
  • Number Two: Serves as Reo's #2 guy. Though this starts to not be the case once it becomes clear that Nagi has surpassed Reo as a football player and gone on ahead, which results in Reo as the guy trying to catch up.
Bastard München match, Nagi starts off with a ¥88,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Manshine City vs. Paris X Gen match, Nagi's bid suffers a decrease to ¥43,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Manshine City vs. Ubers match, Nagi's bid suffers another decrease to ¥40,000,000.
  • Rank Up:
    • In the First Selection: By the time of the match against Team Z, Nagi has scored the most goals of his team to be at Rank 221, which is the highest First Selection rank amongst the players from Team V to Team Z.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Nagi is named Blue Lock's Rank 7.
    • By the end of the Second Selection, Nagi's named one of the six best Blue Lock players at Rank 6.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • During the Team Z vs. Team V match, Nagi calls out Isagi for wasting his chance in front of the goal, and questions why Isagi and Team Z keep fighting when they're clearly the lesser skilled team. However, all that Nagi's words ended up doing was piss of Isagi and awaken the latter's "ego" even further.
    • Gives one to Reo after their match during the Second Selection when Reo continues to complain about Nagi not choosing him after Nagi tries to console him. This leads Nagi to not only argue how Reo's way would stunt their growth as strikers, but to call out Reo for his behavior and that he's the one to forget their promise, not Nagi. He ends it off with saying that he no longer cares about mending their friendship and that Reo's became more annoying than he's worth.
    • Gives a brief but cutting one to Bachira during the Fourth Stage of the Second Selection, criticising him for how often he's been distracted, and that he shouldn't expect Isagi to take him back if he continues his underwhelming performance. This serves as the catalyst Bachira needs to stop relying on the "monster" inside him.
  • The Rival:
    • Starting from their team-up during the Second Selection, Nagi and Baro tend to get under each others skins a lot. The Episode Nagi spin-off showed that their rivalry began as early as the Team V vs. Team X match where they're seen talking trash to one another.
    • There's also a part of him that views Isagi to be this since the latter dealt Nagi his first true loss on the football field at the end of the Team V vs. Team Z match, which motivates Nagi to want to play better.
  • Signature Move: His trapping skills. He can catch the ball in any way to set himself up for a move, or to score the goal.
  • Skeleton Motif: The visualization of his ego tends to appear as a threatening human skull. Most likely because Nagi's slacker persona makes him come off as someone who appears to be somewhat dead.
  • The Slacker: Before meeting Reo, Nagi lacks much motivation in life and has little interests in anything but gaming so he could avoid troublesome things. This changes when he joined the Blue Lock program and he finally found something to fight for in life after facing the frustration of loss against Isagi in the first selection.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: During the duration of the second selection, Nagi reveals that he isn't too well-versed in football like most of the other participants were, having only played football for half a year and lacked the years long experience that the other participants had, but his innate talent and reflexes means that he was able to catch up as fast as he could to others and he was ranked 6th among the best players by the third selection as a result.
    • In the Neo-Egoist league, unfortunately, this has been pointed out by Chris Prince, England's coach, that Nagi's lack of experience will hinder him down in the future and he needs to find his own creativity and play on his own accord than to follow after Reo and Isagi's lead like he used to.
  • Worthy Opponent: He views Isagi as a player that he needs to overcome.

The young rich Child Prodigy heir to the Mikage Corporation. Growing up, Reo had been given everything by his parents to set him up to be the next head to run the family business. However, the lack of challenge in his life inspires Reo to instead become a football player in order to win the World Cup. Despite Reo also being good at sports, his parents rejecting such an idea only pushed him towards football even further. One day at school, Reo witnesses his classmate, Nagi, pull off a football move to save his dropped phone despite having never played an athletic sport in his life. As a result, Reo's convinced that Nagi's an unpolished gem, and proceeds to push Nagi into playing football with him.

Eventually, Reo and Nagi get the invite to Blue Lock, and manage to both end up on Team V. Along with Tsurugi, the 3 of them show themselves off as the strongest players of the team in the First Selection. Given that he's a sports prodigy, Reo shows himself off as one of the better all-around players of Blue Lock. However, due to Nagi growing a rivalry with Isagi to the point of wanting to play together with him in the Second Selection, the result is Reo being left behind. As a result, this leaves Reo as the one playing catch up having realized that Nagi's gone on ahead without him.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Reo chooses to play for England's Manshine City team as along with liking the teams of said country, he sees England as the one that smells the most like money.

In the Blue Lock - Episode Nagi spin-off series, Reo serves as the Deuteragonist. Given his connection to Nagi, the two of them begin their work through Blue Lock as players of Team V.
  • Academic Athlete: The Q&A about Reo's best subjects in the official Blue Lock Twitter reveals that Reo is best at all subjects available in his school, making him one.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed. The anime potrays him in a more antagonistic light, such as him openly declare revenge on Isagi and Nagi due to the latter ditching him to join teams with the former; or an anime-exclusive dialogue showing him with no remorse, even mocking Kunigami when he is eliminated during the Second Selection.
  • Backstory: Chapter 23 delves into his backstory concerning his life as the Mikage Corporation's heir, along with Reo and Nagi going to the same school before they came to Blue Lock. Reo has lived the rich but boring life as the heir to the Mikage Corporation, which he seeks challenge and thrill in his life by deciding to become a football player in order to win the World Cup, and to find a gem for himself that will him push towards winning the World Cup. He then believes to have found such a gem after accidentally bumping into Nagi in the school stairwell, which causes the latter to drop his gaming device. Nagi manages to save said gaming device on instinct using a trapping football skill with his foot despite having never played any sports, which convinces Reo that he's found his unpolished gem that he's going to mold himself into a great football player. Thus, he forcibly convinces Nagi to play football with him.
  • Bash Brothers: He and Nagi are usually always playing off one another.
  • Breakout Character: Ever since their introduction, both Reo and Nagi grew very popular among readers for their shared backstory, appealing designs, and contrasting personalities that give them a unique dynamic. This all culminates to the two having just as much screen time and importance as the main four Team Z players (Isagi, Bachira, Kunigami and Chigiri) and eventually receiving a spin-off centered about them with Reo as the Deuteragonist.
  • Can't Catch Up: After seeing Nagi deciding to team up with Isagi and Bachira for the second selection and then hearing that Nagi got chosen as part of the top 6 players of Blue Lock, Reo realized that Nagi has grown to be someone that he needed to surpass and if he doesn't try to surpass him now then he won't be able to stay by Nagi's side.
  • Character Tics: Has a habit of sticking his tongue out to mock opponents. Also counts as Foreshadowing to his Chameleon Copy weapon.
  • Chick Magnet: Episode Nagi shows that Reo was very popular with the girls at his and Nagi's highschool due to his good looks and being the sole heir in a wealthy family. For Reo's part, he doesn't care much about the attention he gets from girls since having everything handed to him for his whole life made him bored of anything too easily obtained.
  • Child Prodigy: Thanks to being rich, Reo has the school grades and athletic skill to be one of the smartest students and best sports players at a young age. However, it's left him with a feeling of being bored, which he suddenly decides to go in a different direction by becoming a football player in order to win the World Cup.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Purple hair with purple eyes.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Reo shares the limelight with the protagonist, Nagi, of the titular Episode Nagi spin off.
  • Determinator: Along with his determination to win the World Cup on his own efforts, he strives towards it to get back at his parents for rejecting such a goal as they just want him to continue running the Mikage family as a rich businessman.
  • The Dreaded: The trio of Nagi/Reo/Tsurugi are built up as the best of Team V. By the time of the final First Selection match against Team Z, Reo had already scored 6 goals throughout the previous matches.
    • The duo of Nagi and Reo even more so due to their history and teamplay.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Mikage first appears in the final group shot ready to take on Blue Lock.
  • Fiction 500: The Mikage's are a very rich and powerful corporate family with an asset total of 705.8 billion yen. The Mikage's are also sponsoring for the Blue Lock project in light of it's success for the Neo EGOIST League.
  • First-Name Basis: Invoked example. In Episode Nagi, he insisted for Nagi himself to call him by his given name Reo, and Nagi stuck to calling him Reo since. This also applies to the other participants who get to know him over time as they all refer to him by his given name than surname, playing it straight.
  • Goal in Life: He's inspired by the sight of football players winning the World Cup to the point of wanting to win one of his own. His parents rejecting such a dream to the point of only wanting their son to continue as the next company businessman for the Mikage family ends up making him even more determined to become a football player.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He becomes very jealous of Isagi after Nagi chooses to join his team in the Second Selection. He even spends much of their match against them man marking Isagi to make Nagi see that he made the wrong choice.
  • Heroic BSoD: Reo's left stunned in shock when Nagi decides to ditch him to play with Isagi during the Second Selection. Though he does quickly get out of the funk when he decides to form a team with Kunigami and Chigiri in order to get Revenge on Nagi and Isagi.
  • Humble Pie: Reo goes through quite the humbling experience from the Team Z vs. Team V match onward where he seemed like he was on the top of the world only to start taking things more seriously at Blue Lock after losing against Team Z, and the losses he experienced during the Second Selection that almost resulted in his elimination. He gets to a point where he even starts to interact more friendly with Isagi and company.
  • Jack of All Trades: Reo is an all-rounder player who can fit in just about any role. This is what prompts and gives Mikage his own brand of egoism in being able to "copy" any move in near 100% accuracy.
  • The Leader: Fills this role as the leader of Team V.
  • No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: The core of why he got into football in the first place: Having been a rich kid with everything handed to him, he was bored with his life and sought to actually earn something.
  • Not Good with Rejection: His parents rejecting his idea to become a football player that will eventually win the world cup left him feeling frustrated for the first time in his life. This is mainly because it was the first time that Reo was ever rejected of having something and gave him the feeling that he finally found something that can challenge him.
Bastard München match, Reo starts off with a ¥40,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Manshine City vs. Paris X Gen match, Reo's bid suffers a decrease to ¥36,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Manshine City vs. Ubers match, Reo's bid suffers another decrease to ¥34,000,000.
  • Rank Up:
    • In the First Selection: By the time of the match against Team Z, Reo has scored the second most goals of his team to be at Rank 222, which is the second highest First Selection rank amongst the players from Team V to Team Z.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Reo is named Blue Lock's Rank 10.
  • Revenge: During the Second Selection, he desires this greatly against Nagi and Isagi. Nagi for ditching him, and Isagi due to taking Nagi away from him.
  • Rich Boredom: Part of his backstory and what leads to No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction for him. Due to having everything handed to him as a rich kid, he felt bored at how easy it is to get things handed to him that he seeks for a challenge to enrich his life.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Lampshaded in his Spin-Off novel. Being nearly perfect in academic, athletism, good looks and a wealthy upbringing with everything being given to him, yet Reo never flaunts about it. He's also said to form good acquaintanceships with his peers at school.
    • Also Zig-Zagged when it comes to his football skills, as he overestimated himself before the match between team V and team Z. His wealth however, is only brought up in comedic moments.
  • Signature Move: As a football prodigy that has close to perfect skills in every aspect, Reo's weapon is his ability to copy and use anyone's moves for himself.
  • The Strategist: One of the most tactically minded players in the facility to the point of basically manipulating Team V into appointing him captain through his own cunning. He would lead team meetings and come up with plans for individual games with little to no push back from anyone and coordinated the powerhouse trio of himself, Nagi, and Zantetsu well enough to earn them a perfect win record up until their match with Team Z.

    Zantetsu Tsurugi

Zantetsu Tsurugi

Manga Debut: Chapter 22 note

Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu (Japanese), Matthew Elkins (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_tsurugitransparent.png

A Dumb Muscle striker who tries to act and look smart. Tsurugi established himself as one of Team V's better players after Reo and Nagi thanks to his powerful left-footed shot and explosive speed. As the 3 best of Team V, they develop a playstyle that plays off each other's strengths and weaknesses.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Tsurugi chooses to play for France's Paris X Gen team as he believes it to be the smart choice.

In the Blue Lock - Episode Nagi spin-off series, Tsurugi serves as one of the main supporting characters given his connection to Team V.
  • Backstory: The spin-off series delves into his backstory where he was made fun of by his school classmates for his dumbness, which is why he tries to act smart. In addition, due to not being able to read a transportation thanks to his dumbness, this caused Tsurugi to decide to just run to every location. This results in him realizing that he's actually good at running, and decides to take up a sport, such a football.
  • Berserk Button: He gets pissed if people who don't know him decide to make fun of him, such as Chigiri calling Tsurugi a dumbass during the Team Z vs. Team V match.
  • Black Sheep: His backstory paints a picture that he ended up with the dumb gene of the family compared to his much smarter parents and siblings.
  • Butt-Monkey: Due to his dumbness, Reo tends to call him stupid a lot, which Tsurugi just accepts given that Reo's their team leader.
  • Character Tics: Given that he wears glasses, he tends to adjust it a lot.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Tsurugi gets a lot more screen time in the Episode Nagi spin-off series given its focus on Team V's journey through Blue Lock, which delves more into Tsurugi's character as he plays alongside Reo and Nagi.
    • In chapter 27 after Tsurugi steals the ball away from Chigiri, he got to score the 3rd point against Team Z to go up 3-0.
  • Demoted to Extra: At first, Tsurugi's built up as one of the 3 best players of Team V along with Reo and Nagi. However, following the Team Z vs. Team V match, he's quickly pushed to the background while Reo and Nagi go on to be two of the more developed side-characters of the series.
  • The Dreaded: The trio of Nagi/Reo/Tsurugi are built up as the best of Team V. By the time of the final First Selection match against Team Z, Tsurugi had already scored 5 goals throughout the previous matches.
  • Dumb Muscle: Compared to Reo and Nagi, Tsurugi makes up the dumb one of the trio where he acts smart when in actuality, he doesn't know what he's talking about, which usually results in Reo having to correct his errors. However, he's got the football skills to make up for it. So much so that Tsurugi was actually ranked first in Blue Lock's Tag entrance game for Team V.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Tsurugi can be seen amongst the gathered group of 300 forwards when Isagi and Kira first arrive at the JFA building for Ego's opening speech. He's also in the chapter's final group shot.
  • Foregone Conclusion: In the Episode Nagi spinoff, it was already known that Tsurugi's Second Selection team with Niko and Hiiragi was going to lose the 3v3 match against the Nagi/Chigiri/Baro team since in the main series, the latter team ended the Second Selection with Tsurugi as a new teammate that they stole away from another team.
  • Hidden Depths: He seems to really care about staying healthy and taking in the right nutrients to the point that he makes sure to keep the team slacker, Nagi, healthy for their matches. The spin-off reveals that Tsurugi's parents are both dentists, which paints a picture that his parents' good hygiene rubbed off on him.
  • Necessary Drawback: The downfall of Tsurugi's speed is that while he gets a quick burst at the start that makes him faster than Chigiri, he slows down as his run goes on. Thus, because Chigiri can stay at a high constant speed through his whole run, it allows him to eventually catch up to Tsurugi.
  • Power Levels: Starting from the Neo EGOIST League, power levels are introduced where football club sponsors around the world take part in an auction to bid on and finance the players that take part in Blue Lock. The higher the bid determining who the sponsors consider to be the strongest.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Paris X Gen vs. Manshine City match, Tsurugi starts off with a ¥8,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Paris X Gen vs. F.C. Barcha match, Tsurugi's bid is increased to ¥23,000,000.
  • Rank Up:
    • In the First Selection: By the time of the match against Team Z, Tsurugi has scored the third most goals of his team to be at Rank 223, which is the third highest First Selection rank amongst the players from Team V to Team Z.
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Tsurugi is named Blue Lock's Rank 53. He's also one of the 35 survivors that eventually passed the Second Selection, which places him within the top-35.
  • The Rival: As fellow speedsters, Tsurugi is usually at it with Chigiri during the Team Z vs. Team V match.
  • Signature Move: Tsurugi's main football weapon is his Explosive Acceleration, which he gets a quick burst of speed when he starts running. The quick starting burst makes him faster than Chigiri for a brief time.
    • He also has a powerful left leg shot, which he tends to shoot from the right side of the field in order to take advantage of it.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Inverted. Hilariously, he actually tries to invoke the Stoic Spectacles archetype with his behavior, but due to being a massive moron who keeps using words he doesn't understand in the wrong context, he can't convince anyone that he is anything but the Dumb Muscle of team V.
  • Super-Speed: Due to his Explosive Acceleration, he's the fastest player on Team V to the point that he can can keep up with Team Z's fastest player, Chigiri, for a brief time.

    Nameoka Ryo

Nameoka Ryo

Manga Debut: Chapter 1 (Episode Nagi)

Voiced by: Subaru Kimura (Japanese)

A forward who played for the Aomori Dadada high school football team, which was known to be good enough to take on National level teams. Ryo and his team was hired by Reo's father to crush his son's dreams of being a football player, but they were caught off-guard by Reo and Nagi's combined prodigy skills during the match, which resulted in Ryo's team losing.

Like many other young forwards around Japan, Ryo was selected as one of the 300 strikers to take part in the Blue Lock training program. He instantly seeks out revenge against Reo and Nagi once he realizes that he's been paired up on the same team as the ones who defeated him.

Ryo only appears in the Blue Lock - Episode Nagi spin-off series.

  • The Ace: He was Aomori Dadada's star football player before coming to Blue Lock.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Due to how he doesn't appear in the First Selection as a player of Team V in the main series, it's obvious that Ryo was the one who got kicked out of Blue Lock during Team V's Tag entrance game.
  • Jerkass: Acts like such towards Reo and Nagi; looking down on them and their teammates as a bunch of scrubs. Though he does admit that the two of them have skills after his Aomori Dadada team was caught off-guard.
  • Put on a Bus: Just like Kira for Team Z, Ryo was kicked out of Blue Lock early due to being the Team V player who got ousted in the Tag entrance game.
  • Revenge: At Blue Lock, Ryo seeks revenge against Reo and Nagi for the earlier Aomori Dadada loss. So much so that he only goes after trying to eliminate Reo or Nagi during the Tag entrance game.

Characters Introduced in the Second Selection

    Rin Itoshi

Rin Itoshi

Manga Debut: Chapter 40

Voiced by: Kōki Uchiyama (Japanese), José Ángel Torres (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_rintransparent.png

"To crush Itoshi Sae is what my football's all about."

The younger brother of Sae Itoshi and the current #1 player at Blue Lock due to being the fastest player to complete the Second Selection's 100 goal test. By the end of the Second Selection, Rin got to keep the Rank 1 status from then on as Ego names him the best of Blue Lock's Top-6 players.

As someone who's only focus is to surpass Sae, Rin's plan is to use Blue Lock and its players as stepping stones in order to duel his brother as Japan's U-20 team representative. He also gets teamed up with Shidou as the leaders of Team A for the U-20 tryout matches. Overall, Rin doesn't take the lesser skilled Isagi all that serious at first, but as the two of them continue to make their way through Blue Lock, their rivalry gains in intensity.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Rin chooses to play for France's Paris X Gen team.

  • The Ace:
    • Overall, Rin is the strongest and best player among the Blue Lock participants as a whole.
    • In the Neo EGOIST League, he shares this role with Shidou due to Loki coming up with a strategy where he built two Paris X Gen teams that utilize Rin and Shidou as the star forwards of seperated groups within the team. Most likely due to the fact that Rin and Shidou are too incompatible to play together. The way this works, Loki will start the game with a team that utilizes Rin as the star, but midway through the game, Loki subs out the Rin team for a new team that has Shidou as the star.
  • Accidental Athlete: Rin's awakening as a football player starts when he instinctively jumped into the field and try to mimic his brother during one of Sae's matches as a child, accidentally scoring in the process. Sae saw Rin's talent from that one moment and encouraged him to play football with him.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Rin has a similar knack of this like Isagi, only at higher levels. Unlike Isagi, Rin was able to back up all of his plans and analysis on how to fight his opponents due to having a better physical build and stamina to accomplish them.
  • Big Brother Worship: Rin clearly admires Sae and often times he compares the other participants that none of them could match up to Sae's genius. Even after Sae completely beats him down after his return from Spain, Rin still see's Sae as the person he needs to surpass.
  • Big Little Brother: Downplayed. He's a couple inches taller than Sae.
  • Breakout Character: Rin grew popular at such a quick pace since his introduction not just for his design, but also due to proving to be a bigger threat to the rest of the Blue Lock participants and becoming one of Blue Lock's strongest players that Isagi needed to surpass along his backstory and conflict with his brother, Sae.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The half-time break during the Blue Lock vs. U-20 Japan match spends a few chapters delving into Rin's past and his broken sibling relationship with his brother, Sae.
  • The Dreaded: Along with being the best player at Blue Lock, Rin together with Aryu and Tokimitsu form a 3-man-team in the Second Selection that is easily made out to be the strongest.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His Chapter 40 introduction has Rin confidently deciding to practice with two soccer balls as a warm-up right before going through the door to start the Second Selection. Kicking the two balls around the room to purposefully make them hit one another mid-air makes it quite clear to everyone that Rin is going to be one of Blue Lock's top-tier players.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It absolute sickened Rin that his brother, Sae, ended up being more impressed in Isagi over him after the match against U-20 Japan. The result is Rin developing a hatred for Isagi to the point that Rin officially names Isagi to be his main rival at Blue Lock.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Rin turns out to be one of the best English speakers amongst the Japanese Blue Lock strikers, which his fellow teammates even try to get Rin to tutor them.
    • Rin's favorite animal are owls as revealed in the Blue Lock Twitter's Trivia and Q&A.
  • It's Personal: Considering his stoic personality, Rin's motives tend to run along this trope.
    • Rin's anger toward his brother comes from a deep place of hurt after the latter gave up on their shared dream of being the world's best strikers. When other characters try to touch on this topic, he almost explicitly invokes this trope.
    • After the U-20 match ended with Sae singling out Isagi as the main player of the Blue Lock team, Rin's rivalry with Isagi seems to inherit a more personal vendetta on his part.
  • Mentor Archetype: He's this to Nanase as teammates on Paris X Gen. Nanase came to Rin begging the latter to take him in as an apprentice to train him up since Nanase knows that he's weak. Nanase even claiming that he will swear loyalty to Rin as a passing support for the latter. Rin wants nothing to do with Nanase at first, but eventually goes along with it after noticing that Nanase has the potential to be an ambidextrous player.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Downplayed Trope. In the official Blue Lock Twitter's Trivia and Q&A, Rin is revealed to be a fan of horror movies and he spends his day off either playing horror games or watching a horror movie.
Ubers match, Rin starts off with a ¥36,000,000 bid from France's P.X.G.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Paris X Gen vs. Manshine City match, Rin's bid is increased to ¥180,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Paris X Gen vs. F.C. Barcha match, Rin's bid is increased to ¥198,000,000.
  • Parental Title Characterization: More like sibling title characterization. Rin normally refers to his brother as Nii-chan, but as their relationship turns South, he switches to Aniki or just call Sae by his name outright, which is noticeably more distant.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Rin is named Blue Lock's Rank 1. Even by the end of the Second Selection, Rin is named one of the six best Blue Lock players, and keeps his Rank 1 status (mostly thanks to being one of the only two Blue Lock players that scored a goal against the World Five team).
  • The Rival: Is one to the rest of the Blue Lock participants due to him being the most skilled and strongest player.
    • Rin tends to get easily riled up by Shidou whenever they're together. The two of them are almost always going at one another, especially during Blue Lock's U-20 tryout matches where the two of them going at it tends to devolve into fist fights.
    • On his end, he eventually declared Isagi as his very own rival after seeing Sae respecting and praising Isagi's own talent at the end of the U-20 match.
    • Outside of Blue Lock, Rin see's his own brother as one.
  • Stock Shōnen Rival: Rin has a lot of your typical Shonen-manga rival character traits like being aloof, arrogant, sarcastic and revenge-driven. He also seems to be going down a more dark path once Isagi surpasses him to some degree and is also furious other people recognize Isagi's potential more than they recognize Rin's.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He shares the same unique under-eyelashes and green eyes as his older brother, Sae Itoshi.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: He really didn't take it well that despite how much Rin wants to prove himself to his brother, Sae, said brother ended up being more impressed in Isagi.
  • Took a Level in Badass: During the match against U-20 Japan, he successfully manages to enter a "flow" state for the first time that basically looks like a darker version of the "flow" state that his brother, Sae, can enter.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Rin used to be a cheerful and optimistic boy with a strong admiration and idolization of his brother. However, he changed to his current serious and cynical mindset after being on the receiving end of a Curb-Stomp Battle from Sae after he returned from Spain and now made surpassing Sae his goal.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Well, brother, to be exact. Rin wanted, above else, his brother's praise and approval that he could be a great soccer player in his own right.

    Jyubei Aryu

Jyubei Aryu

Manga Debut: Chapter 43 note

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_aryutransparent.png

A pretty-boy striker who puts a lot of focus on how "stylish" the things he sees are, and was the #2 player at Blue Lock during the Second Selection due to being the 2nd fastest striker to complete the 100 goal test. Aryu's tall height due to his long legs makes him a force to be reckoned with as it gives him a reach that no one else at Blue Lock is capable of pulling off. Such skills with his long legs eventually results in Aryu becoming one of the best defensive players at Blue Lock.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Aryu chooses to play for Italy's Ubers team believing that the Florence Cathedral is calling to him.

  • Bishie Sparkle: Given his "stylish" persona, Aryu's head is usually seen giving off a sparkle.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Aryu is an odd sort of player who is very obsessed with being "stylish". However, Aryu is very skilled as a Football player and overall scored second in the first stage of the second selection.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Has a complex about his first name, which he views as old-fashioned and his one unstylish point.
  • The Dreaded: Along with Rin and Tokimitsu, the 3 of them form a 3-man-team in the Second Selection that is easily made out to be the strongest.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Aryu can be seen amongst the gathered group of 300 forwards when Isagi and Kira first arrive at the JFA building for Ego's opening speech. He's also in the chapter's final group shot.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's obsessed with being "stylish", so he's naturally one of these, even asking Chigiri what he uses on his hair.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Probably named after Yagyu Jubei.
Paris X Gen match, Aryu starts off with a ¥5,000,000 bid from Japan's Urawa Rubies.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Ubers vs. F.C. Barcha match, Aryu's bid is increased to ¥25,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Ubers vs. Bastard München match, Aryu's bid is increased to ¥35,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Ubers vs. Manshine City match, Aryu's bid is increased to ¥45,000,000.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Aryu is named Blue Lock's Rank 2. Though he does lose that #2 status after Ego names the true top-6 at the end of the Second Selection.
  • Signature Move: His extremely long legs makes him one of the taller players of Blue Lock, which allows for Aryu to reach for the ball in such ways that other players can only dream to ever pull off.

    Aoshi Tokimitsu

Aoshi Tokimitsu

Manga Debut: Chapter 43 note

Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_tokimitsutransparent.png

An incredibly nervous striker who tends to be really negative about all that's going on around him, and was the #3 player at Blue Lock during the Second Selection due to being the 3rd fastest striker to complete the 100 goal test. Despite the flaws in his persona, Tokimitsu proves himself to be one of the physically strongest and high-stamina strikers seen at Blue Lock.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Tokimitsu chooses to play for France's Paris X Gen team.

  • The Ace: Once you see him on the field, you could see why he'd be the 3rd ranked player in Blue Lock when he was introduced. Isagi has called him a "muscle bullet", with his shoulder charge ending most confrontations with opponents. Having yet to lose a direct and fair confrontation, coupled with his surprising quickness, ball handling, and seemingly bottomless stamina (he was the least exhausted during the 4v4 match with Isagi's team for example) make a powerful combination. This is even more impressive considering most Blue Lock players go for more flashy or technical plays but Tokimitsu handles them just fine.
  • Cowardly Lion: Tokimitsu is almost always seen as a Nervous Wreck but he is the third person to have cleared the first stage of the second selection with Aryu and Rin finishing earlier than he did and there's no denying he is skilled.
  • Demoted to Extra: Out of the 3 members who made up Rin's Second Selection team, Tokimitsu gets the least amount of focus in later chapters, being completely sidelined after Second Selection.
  • The Dreaded: Along with Rin and Aryu, the 3 of them form a 3-man-team in the Second Selection that is easily made out to be the strongest.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In Chapter 1, Tokimitsu can be seen amongst the gathered group of 300 forwards when Isagi and Kira first arrive at the JFA building for Ego's opening speech.
  • Fanboy: As a fan of football, Tokimitsu's quite knowledgeable of the football pros that he and his teammates have to go up against.
  • Nervous Wreck: His establishing character moment has him muttering pessimistically over his situation and being jittery. Even outside the field, Tokimitsu is easily nervous and shy.
  • Nice Guy: Tokimitsu tends to happily get along with anyone he's currently interacting with, especially off the football field. He is seen comforting his teammates quite often, one notable example being comforting Aryu after Aryu's berserk button was pressed. He is also the most flabbergasted by Isagi's team's much more selfish players, especially Baro who is actively antagonizing Isagi.
Manshine City match, Tokimitsu starts off with a ¥10,000,000 bid from Japan's Urawa Rubies.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Paris X Gen vs. F.C. Barcha match, Tokimitsu's bid is increased to ¥23,000,000.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Tokimitsu is named Blue Lock's Rank 3. Though he does lose that #3 status after Ego names the true top-6 at the end of the Second Selection.
  • Super-Strength: A lot of what makes Tokimitsu so intimidating is he's a fast guy but also incredibly strong. He has yet to lose in a contest in strength, with even Baro barely being able to budge him once Tokimitsu goes on the path. The only time he has been seen being stopped is when multiple players made illegal and desperate tackles together. When Baro is pissed off by Tokimitsu, he grabs onto Tokimitsu's jersey to try and drag him to their starting positions but he is unable to get Tokimitsu to budge at all, which visibly unnerves Baro who is known for having some super strength himself. Later in the match, they fight over the ball and while Tokimitsu is completely terrified of Baro, Baro can not get Tokimitsu to move and Tokimitsu passes the ball seemingly more out of fear of Baro than Baro actually making it so that Tokimitsu can't continue to play. It should be noted, again, that Baro never outright beat Tokimitsu in a strength contest without committing illegal plays with other players.
  • Signature Move: His immense strength and infinite stamina that causes him to not get exhausted easily makes Tokimitsu a huge force to be reckoned with. Even a monster such as Baro struggles to out-muscle Tokimitsu.

    Ryusei Shidou

Ryusei Shidou

Manga Debut: Chapter 88

Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura

Position: Forward

An Ax-Crazy striker introduced during Blue Lock's Second Selection. Shidou tends to be really aggressive towards other strikers, even fighting them, just to try to make his own heart "explode" in excitement. However, he has the skills to back up his actions as he's named one of Blue Lock's 6 best players by the end of the Second Selection, being the #2 overall. He also gets teamed up with Rin as the leaders of Team A for the U-20 tryout matches. Eventually, his play ends up getting noticed by Sae, which Shidou is recruited into Japan's U-20 team to play against the team put together by Blue Lock.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Shidou chooses to play for France's Paris X Gen team.
  • The Ace:
    • He is one of the best and skilled players in Blue Lock and was able to keep up with Rin without sweat. However, being an Ax-Crazy Blood Knight also got him at odds with Rin himself.
    • In the Neo EGOIST League, he shares this role with Rin due to Loki coming up with a strategy where he built two Paris X Gen teams that utilize Rin and Shidou as the star forwards of seperated groups within the team. Most likely due to the fact that Rin and Shidou are too incompatible to play together. The way this works, Loki will start the game with a team that utilizes Rin as the star, but midway through the game, Loki subs out the Rin team for a new team that has Shidou as the star.
  • Ax-Crazy: He is a violent Blood Knight, too violent for even Ego to completely handle that he had to be locked away temporarily.
  • Blood Knight: To the spades, he is the most fight-happy participant among everyone in Blue Lock.
  • Bound and Gagged: Due to breaking out in a fight with Rin, Shidou ends up being the guy that shows off Blue Lock's punishment system...which is to be bound and gagged in a straightjacket as if he's a locked-up crazy person in a prison cage.
  • Depraved Homosexual: He is a quite violent and unhinged person, willing to seriously injure anyone he finds annoying and not "explosive" enough, while his interactions with Sae are laced with flirty exchanges and suggestive innuendos. At one point he admits to falling in love with Sae, then asking him for the phone number with a blush on his face and later even wanting to move in together with him.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His introduction during the Second Selection. The Reo/Kunigami duo come across him beating up many other Blue Lock strikers.
  • Expy: Visually, his design is near identical to Eyeshield 21's Hiruma Yoichi.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: For a stretch of "friend", his Ax-Crazy tendencies doesn't endear him to the rest of the surviving participants in the Blue Lock project by the third selection. Not even the U-20 could even fully handle him and only Sae was able to reign Shidou in.
  • Large Ham: He'll shout out his excitement any time something goes great for him, even speaking in sexual terms as if the excitement is making him feel aroused.
Ubers match, Shidou starts off with a ¥20,000,000 bid from Netherlands' Ajajax.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Paris X Gen vs. Manshine City match, Shidou's bid is increased to ¥25,000,000.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Paris X Gen vs. F.C. Barcha match, Shidou's bid is increased to ¥100,000,000.
  • Rank Up:
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Shidou is named Blue Lock's Rank 111.
    • By the end of the Second Selection, Shidou's named one of the six best Blue Lock players at Rank 2 (mostly thanks to being one of the only two Blue Lock players that scored a goal against the World Five team. The other being the best Blue Lock player, Rin).
  • The Rival: It's easy for Shidou to rile up Rin. The two of them are almost always going at one another, especially during Blue Lock's U-20 tryout matches where the two of them going at it tends to devolve into fist fights.
  • Significant Birth Date: Shidou's birthday is in July 7, it's also the day Tanabata is celebrated.
  • Worthy Opponent: Despite his Ax-Crazy persona, Shidou tends to show respect to any football players that are capable of truly getting him excited. He even came to Isagi's defense against Rin after Isagi overtook Shidou and Rin (Blue Lock's #1 and #2 players respectively) due to being under the "flow" effect for a brief moment at the tail end of the U-20 tryout match that Isagi took part in.

    Reiji Hiiragi

Reiji Hiiragi

A striker who likes to read tarot cards on his phone. While Hiiragi remains as a background character in the main series, he gets some focus in the Episode Nagi spinoff where he appears as Niko and Tsurugi's teammate in the Second Selection that goes up against the Nagi/Chigiri/Baro team.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Hiiragi chooses to play for England's Manshine City team.

  • A Day in the Limelight: A background Blue Lock striker who gets some focus in the Episode Nagi spinoff. Hiiragi plays a major speaking role in the 3v3 Second Selection Match when his team goes up against the Nagi/Chigiri/Baro team after the latter trio lost to Rin's team in the main series.
  • Facial Markings: The most distinctive thing about his character design is the mole under his eyes on each of his facial cheeks.
  • Foil: Nagi's monologue establishes Hiiragi as one to Isagi. Both are The Smart Guy of their respective team, has contrasting personality on and off the field like a flip switch. The main difference is while Isagi constantly think of ways to counter his opponents on the fly and evolves alongside them, Hiiragi strictly follows the informations he's obtained, which can be outdated.
  • Foregone Conclusion: In the Episode Nagi spinoff, it was already known that Hiiragi's Second Selection team with Niko and Tsurugi was going to lose the 3v3 match against the Nagi/Chigiri/Baro team since in the main series, the latter team ended the Second Selection with Tsurugi as a new teammate that they stole away from another team.
  • Fortune Teller: He relies on virtual tarot cards on his phone to predict how enemy strikers playing against him will turn out.
  • Jerkass: He doesn't think much of his teammates, Niko and Tsurugi. Especially after they start losing in the 3v3 Second Selection game against the Nagi/Chigiri/Baro team because Niko's information on their opponents turns out to be outdated because they've gone through changes since the last time they met, and because Tsurugi's too much of an idiot to play with. Throughout the match, he also gives the Nagi/Chigiri/Baro team a rough time.
  • Out of Focus: He only makes brief background appearances in the main series to the point of not having a single line of dialogue.
Paris X Gen match, Hiiragi starts off with a ¥5,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Manshine City vs. Ubers match, Hiiragi's bid is increased to ¥9,000,000.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Hiiragi is named Blue Lock's Rank 22.
  • Tarot Troubles: Hiiragi has his phone with him where he likes to bring up virtual tarot cards on it to have some fun with his fellow strikers such as pulling up the "Devil," "Hanged Man," and "Death" cards to describe Chigiri, Baro, and Nagi respectively. Nagi sends it back at him by loading up the "Fool" card to describe Hiiragi.
  • This Cannot Be!: His team with Niko and Tsurugi starts off with a commanding 3-0 lead against the Nagi/Chigiri/Baro team, but once the latter team learns how to overcome their weaknesses, they get reverse thrashed losing 3-5, which Hiiragi's unable to understand why this happened.

Karasu gets paired up with Otoya as the leaders of Team B for the U-20 tryout matches. His unique ability of analyzing his opponents' strengths and weaknesses causes Karasu to fall into being more of a midfielder role that supports other teammates.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Karasu chooses to play for France's Paris X Gen team.

  • One Degree of Separation: He and Hiori are part of the same youth Kansai team before being invited to join the Blue Lock project.

  • Straight Man: In comedic situations from the Third selection onwards, he plays as one to the Blue Lockers as a whole at times.
  • Signature Move: Has high ball-keeping sense, and his ability to analyze his opponents' strengths and weaknesses to the point that he knows who the strongest and weak-link are, makes Karasu out as one of the most intelligent strikers at Blue Lock.

    Eita Otoya

Eita Otoya

Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi

A talented striker who's named Blue Lock's 4th best overall player by the end of the Second Selection. Otoya gets paired up with Karasu as the leaders of Team B for the U-20 tryout matches.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Otoya chooses to play for Spain's F.C. Barcha team due to it being the country of passion.

  • The Casanova: A few times, Otoya mentions interests in wanting to pick up girls.

  • Famous Ancestor: Hiori mentions that Otoya is descended from ninja's and has the training and physique to show.

    • By the end of the Second Selection, Otoya's named one of the six best Blue Lock players at Rank 4.
  • Signature Move: Has a fast stealth move that allows Otoya to quickly get behind his opponent unnoticed.

    Kenyu Yukimiya

Kenyu Yukimiya

Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi

A talented striker who's named Blue Lock's 5th-best overall player by the end of the Second Selection. Yukimiya is on limited time due to having an optical illness that could result in him eventually going blind. Despite that illness, he remains determined to become the best striker in the world. In the Third Selection, Yukimiya gets paired up with Nagi as the leaders of Team C for the U-20 tryout matches.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Yukimiya chooses to play for Germany's Bastard München team.

  • Backstory: Chapter 172 delves into his backstory regarding the discovery that he has an optical illness, and his will to become the best striker in the world despite said illness.
  • Cool Shades: The defining feature of Yukimiya's character design is his single lens eye-goggles whenever he's playing football.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He starts to get more focus by the time of the Neo EGOIST League due to choosing to play for the same Bastard München team as Isagi.
    • Isagi gave Yukimiya the opportunity to score the game-winning goal in the Bastard München vs. Manshine City match.
  • Determinator: Despite his optical illness, Yukimiya remains determined to accomplish his dream of becoming the best football striker before his illness causes him to go blind. This can sometimes veer into Detrimental Determination levels, as Yukimiya's desperate desire to stand out causes his plays to become rash. Ego and Isagi calls him out on this immaturity.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Once the Neo EGOIST League gets going, Yukimiya starts to show jealousy towards Isagi due to how much attention the latter is getting despite the fact that Yukimiya is ranked higher. However, he gets over it during the match against Manshine City when Isagi provides him the moment to shine at the tail end of the game.
  • Jerkass to One: Normally Yukimiya is amicable towards both his teammates and rivals alike, though he is shown to pick on Isagi a number of times as the latter has more attention than him despite ranking lower. This gradually goes off after the match with Manshine City, as he acknowledges Isagi as a Worthy Rival, and apologizes to the latter for his actions.
Manshine City match, Yukimiya starts off with a ¥29,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Bastard München vs. Ubers match, Yukimiya's bid is increased to ¥36,000,000.
  • Pretty Boy: He's seen as quite the good looker to the point that all the chicks fawn over him. Yukimiya was also once sought after to become a male model because of his good looks, but he rejected going up in the modeling field due to his desire to become a star football player.
  • Rank Up:
    • After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Yukimiya is named Blue Lock's Rank 23.
    • By the end of the Second Selection, Yukimiya's named one of the six best Blue Lock players at Rank 5.
  • The Rival: He develops a rivalry with Isagi during the Neo EGOIST League due to the growing jealousy of seeing Isagi getting all the attention as teammates on Bastard München.
  • Signature Move: Has two.
    • His dribbling excels in 1-on-1 situations far better than the other players at Blue Lock, even against his fellow top-6.
    • His signature kick at the goal is a "Gyro Shot," a high-arcing kick with such a strong spin on it that it causes the ball's midair arc to turn really sharp. He later upgrades the kick into a much sharper arcing "Sword Screw" shot.
  • Took a Level in Badass: His "Gyro Shot" upgrades to a "Sword Screw" shot at the tail end of the Bastard München vs. Manshine City match by implementing what he observed from Chris Prince's "Knuckleball" shot, and adding it to his own signature kick.
  • Worthy Rival: Seeing how Isagi continues to surpass his limits despite being "lower" than Yukimiya's ranking, as well as Isagi aiding Yukimiya score the winning goal against Manshine's team, causes Yukimiya to regard Isagi in a whole new respectful light, voicing out loud that the young striker is worthy of being his rival.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: A variant and a Downplayed Trope. Yukimiya suffers an optical illness that would render him blind in time. Unlike the case of Chigiri, Yukimiya knows that he is on the verge of becoming blind that not even his own prescriptions to slow it down could fully prevent it, and as such, Yukimiya wants to keep playing and reach his dream as a great football player before the day comes that his sight is robbed by his illness.

     Nijiro Nanase

Nijiro Nanase

A striker introduced in the Third Selection who appears to be one of the lesser skilled players at Blue Lock. Nanase plays alongside Isagi during the Blue Lock vs. U-20 Japan tryout matches.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Nanase chooses to play for France's Paris X Gen team.

  • Alliterative Name: Both his first and last name start with N.
  • The Apprentice: As teammates on Paris X Gen, Nanase begs Rin to take the former in as an apprentice, and even swears to act as a passing support to Rin as the main striker. Rin doesn't agree at first since he doesn't view Nanase as a good player, but he starts to go along with it once he realizes that Nanase has the potential to be an ambidextrous player.
  • Country Mouse: Nanase has a countrylike dialect when Isagi spoke to him in the original Japanese text, hinting that Nanase comes from the countryside of Japan.
  • The Load: He's viewed as one of the weaker players at Blue Lock, which doesn't allow him to stand out much. That starts to change by the Neo EGOIST League when Rin notices that Nanase is ambidextrous.
  • Nice Guy: He is friendly and supportive. Nanase's friendliness along with Hiori's calm nature has Isagi note at how refreshing it is with them after having to deal with hostile and cold players (Barou and Rin).
Manshine City match, Nanase starts off with a ¥3,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Paris X Gen vs. F.C. Barcha match, Nanase's bid is increased to ¥16,000,000.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Nanase is named Blue Lock's Rank 99. He's also one of the 35 survivors that eventually passed the Second Selection, which places him within the top-35.
  • Signature Move: He's introduced not having a special weapon due to being considered one of the weaker Blue Lock players. However, while training on Paris X Gen, Rin helps Nanase discover that he's ambidextrous.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Rin helps train him up during the Neo EGOIST League, which is where Nanase discovers that he has the potential to be an ambidextrous player.
  • Undying Loyalty: In order to survive through the Neo EGOIST League, Nanase swears to loyally follow Rin as the latter's passing support on Paris X Gen.

     Yo Hiori

Yo Hiori

A Blue Lock striker who was trained up to be a football prodigy by his parents, and played on the same youth team as Karasu before joining the program. Hiori's introduced in the Third Selection playing alongside Isagi during the Blue Lock vs. U-20 Japan tryout matches, which he shows off his really good passing skills. Despite his skills, Hiori remains disinterested in the sport as a result of his parents treating him as a tool to push forward their own goals, which Hiori decided to go to Blue Lock just to get away from them.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Hiori chooses to play for Germany's Bastard München team.

  • Abusive Parents: Of the emotional variety. The poor kid only played soccer and got better at it because he wanted to please his parents. But it turns out they only conceived Hiroi in order to live through him because both of them are former atheletes who always scored second in life and want to experience being 1st place by proxy. His parents got into frequent fights about the other raising Hiori "wrong" and threatened to divorce each other if he didn't become a gold medal worthy player with Hiroi overhearing one particulary nasty fight and hearing all of this. When Hiori fell down the stairs as a result and hurt his foot, rather than acknowledging that their arguing inadvertently hurt their son, they panicked about his "worth" being affected. Hiori, at a young age, realized that his parents saw him as a tool, not a person. After this his motivation for playing soccer then changed from pleasing his parents to simply trying to keep his family together. In the current story, Hiori has grown so sick of his parents that he can no longer stand their company and joined Blue Lock simply to get away from them.
  • Backstory: As described in chapter 206, Hiori is the product of two athletic parents, who got 2nd place in their respective fields, deciding to work Hiori to the bone to become a perfect football athlete. This path resulted in Hiori being completely disinterested in life as it's clear that he doesn't really like soccer. Especially after realizing that his parents don't see him as a son, but as a tool to push their own goals forward.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Like Isagi, Hiori is a pretty chill guy off the field. However, he does have a hidden disdain towards his own parents and he wishes that they were dead.
  • Character Development: Hiori starts off as an unmotivated boy just using Blue Lock as a means to get away from his questionable parents. However, he starts to become more passionate towards playing football the more he watches Isagi's play throughout the series. By the time of the Neo EGOIST League, watching Isagi play football hypes Hiori up so much that it becomes his goal to make Isagi the King. Thus, finally giving Hiori a passion for the sport.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Chapter 206 is all about him, which delves into Hiori's Backstory.
    • In the Neo EGOIST League, Hiori's the player who gets focused on when he's finally subbed in near the end of the Germany's Bastard München vs. Italy's Ubers match. It's here that Hiori's Undying Loyalty as a passing support to Isagi is truly established, which leads to Hiori making a crucial no-look pass that allows for Isagi to score the game-winning goal.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Even though his parents trained him up to be a football prodigy, he doesn't have much interest in the sport due to knowing how his parents just see him as a tool to push forward their own agendas. Thus, other than not wanting to live in his home with two parents that don't view him as a person (choosing to play at Blue Lock just to stay away from them), he questions what he actually wants to do in life.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Hiori's visual senses are high to the point that he's another Metavision user, which allows him to see everything that's going on around the football field.
  • Imagine Spot: While playing a shooter game, Hiori, sick of his parents, imagines shooting them to pieces and wanting them to die.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Has blue eyes fitting his kind personality, and also fits his Meaningful Name, with his last name has the kanji for "ice". Also delves to Icy Blue Eyes for the aforementioned reason, and he is more tactiturn and analytical than his outward appearance suggests.
  • Nice Guy: Like Nanase, he is established to be friendly and nice. Nanase's friendliness along with Hiori's calm nature has Isagi note at how refreshing it is with them after having to deal with hostile and cold players (Barou and Rin).
  • One Degree of Separation: He and Karasu are part of the same youth Kansai team before being invited to join the Blue Lock project.
  • Parental Neglect: His parents don't treat him as a human being, but rather as a tool that they're molding into a perfect athlete. When Hiori injured his foot on the home staircase, his parents were more worried about the injury messing up his athletic skills rather than asking if their son's okay. He's become so annoyed by the expectations that his parents set for him regarding the need to become the best football player that Hiori would rather stay at Blue Lock than have to deal with his parents.
Ubers match, Hiori starts off with a ¥20,000,000 bid.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Hiori is named Blue Lock's Rank 27.
  • Signature Move:
    • Hiori's signature skill is knowing the exact spot that's best to pass the ball.
    • He shares the same Metavision skill as Isagi that allows him to see everything that's going on on the football field.
  • Sweet Sheep: As per of his Meaningful Name which is written with the kanji for "sheep", Hiori is mild-mannered, friendly and compassionate to his teammates.
  • Undying Loyalty: He becomes this to Isagi by the time of the Neo EGOIST League due to being hyped up and impressed by Isagi's play throughout the series. So much so that it becomes Hiori's goal to make Isagi the King of football.

  • A Day in the Limelight: He and Saramadara get a brief moment in the volume extras where Chigiri tries to talk with them before the tryout match against Isagi's team. However, Chigiri was unable to get along with them.
  • Momma's Boy: He takes his grandma's words to "not talk to strangers" to heart that he even does it at Blue Lock to not speak to Chigiri when the latter tries to introduce himself to Shiguma.
  • Out of Focus: Despite the hype of being picked for the Blue Lock vs. U-20 Japan tryout match against Isagi's team, Shiguma ended up not getting any moments to stand out during the game. Part of the issue is that Chigiri couldn't really get along with him before the match to work as teammates.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Shiguma is named Blue Lock's Rank 55. He's also one of the 35 survivors that eventually passed the Second Selection, which places him within the top-35.

     Yukio Ishikari

Yukio Ishikari

A striker introduced in the Third Selection who's the tallest amongst all players at Blue Lock.

In the Neo EGOIST League, Ishikari chooses to play for Italy's Ubers team.

  • The Big Guy: Given his towering height, Ishikari fills this role for almost any team that he plays for.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Ishikari doesn't start getting moments on the field of playing football until the Third Selection. However, he can usually be seen in the background towering over everyone before then, such as in the very 1st chapter when the 300 high school strikers all arrive for Ego's opening speech.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Ishikari is named Blue Lock's Rank 13.

Ranze Kurona

A striker that made it to the Third Selection, but was only ever seen in the background. Once the Neo EGOIST League rolls around, Kurona chooses to play for the same Bastard München team as Isagi. He's the first to accept Isagi as the main striker of the team, which results in Kurona becoming Isagi's main passing support throughout the Neo EGOIST League.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Zig-Zagged. While he appears late in the original series, in Episode Nagi he is prominently visible in the crowd right before the First Selection.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Kurona has long been introduced since the Third Selection as one of the players who joined Shidou's team at some point of the Second Selection, but it's only in the Neo EGOIST League that he is finally brought to focus and fully fleshed out.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In the main series, Kurona is first spotted in the Second Selection waiting room after the 100 goal test. Since Kurona was the 4th fastest to make 100 goals, he can be seen when Isagi arrives as the 15th to finish scoring 100 goals. It's not until the following Neo EGOIST League that Kurona's finally given a proper introduction.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: He runs out of stamina along with getting a leg cramp trying to keep up with Isagi throughout the Germany's Bastard München vs. Italy's Ubers match, which results in Kurona needing to be subbed out of the game.
Manshine City match, Kurona starts off with a ¥24,000,000 bid.
    • Following the Neo EGOIST League's Bastard München vs. Ubers match, Kurona's bid is increased to ¥34,000,000.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Kurona's named Blue Lock's Rank 4. Though he does lose that #4 status after Ego names the true top-6 at the end of the Second Selection.
  • Scary Teeth: He's got sharp spiked teeth. Raichi calls Kurona a shark because of it.
  • Signature Move: His ability to make sharp body turns, which makes Kurona an effective dribbler.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Isagi as teammates on Bastard München. Kurona's perfectly fine with being the passing support for Isagi in the role as the main striker.
  • Verbal Tic: Has an habit of saying a single word twice before actually saying a longer phrase, or simply repeating words at the end of a sentence. For example, saying "Counter. Counter. Time to counter." in Chapter 212, but it's happened quite a few times since he became more prominent in the story.

    Jin Kiyora

Jin Kiyora

A striker that made it to the Third Selection. Once the Neo EGOIST League rolls around, Kiyora chooses to play for the same Bastard München team as Isagi. He ends up remaining on the bench through the first three games of the Neo EGOIST League, but when the final big match against Paris X Gen rolls around, Kiyora finally gets a chance to play.

  • Adaptational Dye-Job: He has malachite green eyes and dark green hair in the manga, but his Early-Bird Cameo in the anime has red eyes and black hair instead. Illustrator Nomura later explained that at the time of production, they had yet to set on a color palette for Kiyora and these changes will be corrected in subsequent seasons.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In the Neo EGOIST League, Kiyora remained on the bench until it looked like Noa was finally going to sub him in during the Germany's Bastard München vs. Italy's Ubers match. However, Isagi interrupts as he wants Hiori in the game since they've already developed chemistry with one another, which Noa eventually accepts. This forces Kiyora to remain on the bench, but Noa makes it clear to the former that he will get his chance at a later time.
  • Day in the Limelight: Has prominent appearance in the match against PXG, and episode Nagi spinoff.
  • Dance Battler: His primary playing style. His acquired skills in breakdancing, pairing with his small statue making his body rather flexible. In a training against Nagi, he's able to catch the latter off guard numerous times due to this unpredictability.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: First appears at the end of the Second Selection having made it to the finish line as the last addition to the Nagi/Barou/Chigiri/Zantetsu team. He starts to get more focus in the Neo EGOIST League due to choosing to play for the same Bastard München team as Isagi.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his outward appearance, it's listed in his profile that his hobby is breakdancing, and he likes provocations during matches.
  • Messy Hair: The most notable thing about Kiyora's character design is his unkempt hair.
  • The Quiet One: Very rarely does Kiyora talk, and the few times he does speak, he's a man of few words.
  • Rank Up: After making it out of the Second Selection's starting 100 goal test, Kiyora is named Blue Lock's Rank 21.
  • Verbal Tic: His Japanese dialogue has him ending sentences with copulas written in katakana, showing some kind of accent. He also occasionally omits "h" sounds in his words, notably ai in place of hai for "yes".

"You will not become the greatest strikers in the world unless you have the ego to match. My purpose here is to create such a player in Japan... from the corpses of 299 players... one hero will rise in all his glory!!"

An eccentric and innovative football coach who puts an emphasis on "ego," an ideal where one must put yourself before your teammates in order to become the best there is. Ego is the grand creator behind the Blue Lock player improvement project, which is a massive pentagon-shaped football facility that has been designed to turn someone into the greatest egotistical striker forward in the world. Something that Ego believes to be the key missing piece that Japan's pro football team has been lacking for many years.

Putting his plan into motion, Ego scouts out 300 young teenage forwards from all around Japan to come to Blue Lock, which they go about training and competing against one another until just one player remains. The player who survives the whole way through Ego's Blue Lock will thus be crowned the greatest striker, and will be the one who leads Japan to finally win the World Cup.

  • Berserk Button: Ego's made it clear he doesn't tolerate cheating, or betraying the team. Being a standout individual to become the best striker in the world is one thing, but trying to become the best striker by cheating or betraying your team sets him off. His normal calm yet brutal attitude vanishes when he tears into Kuon when Kuon tried to sell out his team not once, but twice! His face is drawn in shadow save for his mouth and eyes to show that he was not pleased in the slightest.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: To a certain degree some evil exists in Ego's Blue Lock program and his methodology. However, when he had the chance to talk to Kuon after Kuon betrayed the team and tried to weasel out of trying in the next game by coasting off his three goals, Ego was not amused. He went as far as to call Kuon the filthiest scum in the entire Blue Lock facility.
  • Foil: He's this towards Ryousuke Kira, one of the 300 forwards that Ego scouted out to come to Blue Lock. Kira being all about team play makes it clear during Ego's opening speech that he doesn't agree with Ego's methods of only having one star player that puts himself over his teammates. This of course puts them at odds.
  • Game Changer: Part of the reason that he was able to convince all 300 of the young forwards he scouted to take part in Blue Lock is because they've never heard of a coach who prioritizes pushing down others to make yourself great over working as a team to win in football. He causes close to 300 players to try to change their fate by going down a path where they ditch everything they know about team play in order to become the best egotistical striker who puts himself above everyone else.
  • Get Out!: Basically says this in the opening speech to his 300 players if they reject his methods by believing that something out there is better than becoming the best striker in the world, such as playing together a team. This was especially the case with team-player Kira, who he ordered to F-off after said player lost the Tag entrance game.
  • Goal in Life: His job is to discover and train up a football forward with a huge enough ego capable of becoming the best striker in the world, and leads Japan's pro football team to complete victory at the World Cup.
  • Impossible Genius: He's an intellectual genius who programmed Blue Lock, a futuristic football facility that's capable of figuring out everyone's stats, and comes with top-notch human-sized AI programs that can act as the stand-in goalie for his players.
  • Info Dump: He usually has to do this a lot given that he has to explain how Blue Lock works to everyone (including the readers).
  • It's All About Me: Ego's whole plan regarding Blue Lock is centered around this theme. He wants to find a player with an ego great enough to put themselves over everyone else while leading the team to victory. To be the one who has the strength and courage to shoot the goal himself rather than pass it to a teammate when the pressure of everyone watching is bearing down on their shoulders.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Despite how borderline villainous his methodology towards creating the best striker is, he isn't wrong when he bluntly states that the spirit of teamwork is useless if not a single player can score the points, considering Japan's inability to win the World Cup. "The Reason You Suck" Speech he gives Kira after his elimination despite its brutality also highlights Kira's legitimate flaw in prioritizing teamwork over actually achieving victory.
  • Large Ham: He's one heck of a social speaker breaking out into long and energetic speeches just to get his point across. His egotism truly shines when he's speaking.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is Ego, and his overall goal is to coach up the "egotism" within his players.
  • Men Can't Keep House: He's more focused on his Blue Lock project rather than keeping his surroundings clean, which his main supporter, Anri, is usually around to clean up after him.
  • Mentor Archetype: As the football coach training up his 300 Blue Lock forwards. Throughout the story, Ego provides them a lot of useful advise and information related to football that helps them become better players.
  • Mission Control: He's the one who watches over the training at Blue Lock. Ego very rarely appears in person as he's usually seen on television screens working from his computer in order to provide his players their tasks and training.
  • Mr. Exposition: Given that only Ego knows how his Blue Lock project works, he's usually the one put in this position having to explain how everything works, especially towards the 300 young strikers that he scouted out.
  • Mysterious Past: Seems to have been a professional player in the past, yet none of the younger characters in the present seem to recognize him, not even the self-proclaimed football nerd Tokimitsu. Made more bizzare by the fact that the current best player in the world actually goes out of his way to praise Ego's skills from the time Ego was still an active player.
  • The Nicknamer: He tends to call his 300 strikers as "unpolished gems" given that they're all up-and-coming football players who need to be polished up.
  • Poverty Food: He prefers to eat ramen in the current day. Mostly because he had a strict diet in his younger days, and didn't get to eat such food back then. Thus, he eats delicious ramen to catch up on what he missed.
  • Precision F-Strike: Has no issues with dropping F-bombs. He tells Kira to f#$k off after said player lost the Tag entrance game, which eliminated Kira from going any further in Blue Lock.
  • Ramen Slurp: He's a big ramen eater in the current day, so he's usually seen performing this action.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Dishes this out several times.
    • When Kira's words about playing as a team starts to turn the 300 strikers against Ego, the latter remains unfazed, which he proceeds to call them all out at how pathetic the state that Japan's future in football seems to be heading for them. He admits that while football in Japan is top-notch in organization skills, they're still just second-rate in everything else. Ego makes it clear to everyone to get lost if they believe in bonds and friendly team play when none of that matters as long as the best player is out there scoring the most goals.
    • When an angered Kira orders Ego to take his It's All About Me words back claiming that such words are an insult to Japan's U-20 football team who've gotten as far as they have thanks to team play, Ego just doesn't care as said team is still just a bunch of trash nobodies who've never won a World Cup.
    • When Kira is eliminated from Blue Lock due to losing the Tag entrance game, and explodes in anger at not being able to understand why he was eliminated, Ego goes off on him. Ego calls out Kira for having already accepted defeat when there was still 1 second remaining on the clock, and could have re-established his body after Isagi hit him with the soccer ball to save himself from elimination by hitting the loose ball at the injured Igarashi. Ego claims that a forward is not a true striker unless you're fighting down to the last second, which Kira clearly did not. Thus, he tells Kira one final time that this is his loss, and to f#$k off.
  • Retired Badass: Such a great player when he was still active that Noah actually singles him out as a remarkable player.
  • The Rival: In a conversation with Isagi, Noah reveals that he and Ego were past rivals.
  • Rousing Speech: Strangely enough, he's actually really good at providing speeches, such as his words being able to convince up to 300 young Japanese forward strikers to ditch all that they've learned about football up to this point, and take part in his Blue Lock training program to become the best and most egotistical striker in the world.
  • Slasher Smile: Tends to show off this kind of smile whenever his psychotic ego kicks in, such as whenever he sees that things are going his way regarding his Blue Lock work.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Along with being a genius, he also happens to be wearing glasses.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: He seems weirdly similar to Akira Midousuji from Yowamushi Pedal (especially when he smiles), with both of them being tall, lanky individuals with mocking personalities and pragmatic approaches to victory. The key difference is that Midousuji believes in victory at all costs, while Ego does have some level of morals and while he is not against crushing the opponent without mercy, he strongly believes it should be done with true skill and power, without the use of underhanded tactics.

    Anri Teieri

Anri Teieri

Manga Debut: Chapter 1

Voiced by: Eri Yukimura (Japanese), Kasi Hollowell (English), Lupita Leal (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluelock_anritransparent.png

"If this situation remains the same, Japan will never... we will never win... the World Cup."

A member of the Japan Football Association who desires to one day see her country's football team as the champions of the world. To reach this goal, Anri births the idea by hiring Jinpachi Ego as Japan's new coach to create the ultimate striker for Japan through his Blue Lock project. From then on, she works alongside Ego at Blue Lock working through the 300 young football forwards all aiming to become the greatest striker.

  • Beleaguered Assistant: She's not even supposed to be Ego's assistant, but acts like one to placate him, and due to Ego's focus only ever being on the Blue Lock project, she ends up having to take on menial tasks, like cleaning up Ego's messy work room, and having to constantly clean the sports clothes of the Blue Lock players.
  • Butt-Monkey: Ego tends to belittle or toy with her a lot, whether it be because he calls her out anytime she tries to understand his Blue Lock project and gets it wrong, or because she has to clean up after him. She also gets very little respect from the other JFA board members.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Her sizable chest often gets her a lot of male attention, and they're often played for fanservice, being the target of Male Gaze shots. This is Downplayed in the anime, where many of these scenes were removed.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her hair and eyes are both in the same shade of red.
  • D-Cup Distress: She's annoyed at how she's often dismissed as a Brainless Beauty or Lust Object due to her large breasts, such as the men of the Japan Football Association only focusing on her chest whenever she talks at meetings
  • Determinator: She's extremely determined in her goal of improving the Japanese national team, becoming devoted to the Blue Lock despite how little support she gets and how difficult Ego is to deal with.
  • Foil: Towards the JFA's President Buratsuta, who is completely satisfied with keeping Japan's underperforming pro football team the way it is as it already brings in lots of money for the JFA. Meanwhile, Anri doesn't care about the money, investing it into Blue Lock in order to make a player for Japan that will finally lead them to victory. This of course puts the two of them at odds.
  • Goal in Life: The goal she's striving for is to see Japan finally win a World Cup.
  • Info Dump: She basically acts as the JFA spokesperson when it comes to explaining to people why Blue Lock is necessary to push Japan's football to the next step. Her words are basically what convinced Sae Itoshi to stick around in Japan as he gains an interest to see the great football forward that comes out of Blue Lock.
  • Ms. Fanservice: The series makes it no small secret that she has a nice figure, and she's often subjected to Male Gaze shots. Chapter 15 even starts with a full-on shot of her butt. And while she usually wears modesty clothing, she tends to be seen in skimpy outfits on cover pages and color spreads.
  • Number Two: She serves as Ego's main support when it comes to helping him with his work at Blue Lock.
  • Office Lady: A hard-working JFA office woman who's actually trying to make Japan's pro football team better. She also has the looks, which pleases the other members of the board, much to Anri's own detriment at times. She's also in charge of dealing with Blue Lock's administrative and legal matters and often check in on the participants from time to time.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: While there isn't any information of her being a former football player, it's clear that she's very passionate about the sport. The only reason the Blue Lock Project began was because of her frustration in Japan’s performance at the 2018 World Cup.
  • Punny Name: Her name is phonetically identical to Thierry Henry, a famous former Football player.
  • Resort to Pouting: She pouts when Ego calls her answer stupid as to what a football "awakening" is.
  • Rousing Speech: Actually a decent public speaker when she acts upon it. When Anri's holding a press conference in front of many interviewers regarding the introduction of the Blue Lock project, she makes it loud and clear why it's necessary to sacrifice many young talents in order to make the one hero that will lead Japan to victory. Many of the interviewers remain confused, but another that was watching was the talented football player, Sae Itoshi, who was impressed enough to decide to stay in Japan to see how the Blue Lock project turns out.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She is the reason why the Blue Lock project was created in the first place and had gone to find Jinpachi Ego in order to improve Japan's performance in Football. Her Rousing Speech when holding a press conference to introduce the Blue Lock Project actually inspired and convinced Sae, who had already been disappointed at how weak and stagnant the performance of Japanese football players are, to stay in Japan so he could see the end result of the project's success. Without Anri, the story may never have begun at all.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Zigzagged in the case that while female family members of the participating characters do appear, Anri is the only major female character throughout the series due to her goal of wanting to bring Japan's football team to go all the way to the top.
  • Supporting Leader: As the JPA board member who pushed for Blue Lock, she's technically in charge of the whole thing but plays a supporting role, even basically acting as Ego's assistant.
  • Token Good Teammate: She's this towards the JFA being the only member of the board who actually wants Japan's football team to go all the way rather than just remain satisfied that the team is already bringing in satisfying profits from being just good enough to qualify for tournaments.
