Ask the Tropers:
openAngstAversion before the film comes out Film
So uh on the ymmv page of Avengers Infinity War. This is there:
- Angst Aversion:
- The very real prospect of Thanos being a completely Invincible Villain dealing one crushing No-Holds-Barred Beatdown after another to the heroes while amassing Infinity Stones like they're going out of style — even if his Co-Dragons, the Black Order, seem like prime candidates be the Curb Stomp Cushion in compensation — and where quite possibly The Bad Guy Wins outright by casually unmaking the universe can readily result in this trope for those waiting for the film to find out what happens. However, the presence of the (still deeply secret) 2019 sequel may mitigate it in the form of Like You Would Really Do It, or at least a "Ray of Hope" Ending.
- In particular, fans are not thrilled with the possibility of the surviving Asgardians getting a bridge dropped on them after the events of Thor: Ragnarok.
- Or with seeing the heroic Nova Corps likely getting massacred by Thanos for the Power Stone, after the Xandarians were prominent allies of the Guardians and just barely avoided an Apocalypse How at the hands of Ronan the Accuser (who was wielding the same Infinity Stone, no less).
The thing is this movie isnt even out yet, so this speculating on stuff that might happen. Is this kosher.
openIs this a justifying edit? Film
About a week ago I added this to YMMV.Justice League 2017:
- What An Idiot: The Amazons, Atlanteans, and Humans each took one of the three Mother Boxes for safekeeping.
- You'd expect: The Humans to build a stronghold for their box (or at least place it in an already existing fortress) and keep it heavily guarded, like the Amazons and Atlanteans did.
- Instead: The Humans bury their box under a couple of feet of dirt, in some random forest, and ultimately forget about it.
Yesterday, Doctor Sleep commented it out with the edit reason:
"The humans all came from different "tribes", so they most likely agreed to bury their motherbox in neutral territory so that one wouldn't have power over another."
That sounds awfully close to a Justifying Edit to me, but I figured I'd bring it up here, see what everyone else thinks. Worth mentioning that the movie doesn't say anything about "neutral territory", and even if it did, it's completely irrelevant the point of the entry: burying it under some dirt and forgetting about it. I also don't recall anything about different tribes of humans, just humankind in general, but I could be wrong about that one.
Edited by PrimisopenThe King of Kong Film
Should we keep an eye on The King of Kong and its subpages? Someone seems to be trying to trope the real-life person Billy Mitchell.
openPage with abnormal media categories Film
Deranged Animation is not organized by the traditional Media categories, and some of the works at least are miscategorized. Before I try cleaning, I want to know if the current organization is the appropriate one.
open Does this entry sound like it qualifies for the Yandere trope? Film
In Killer Coach, Bryce becomes obsessed with his student Samantha after they engage in a one-night stand. He wants to pursue a more intimate relationship with her while she tries to create some distance. When she tries to formerly end things with him, he does whatever he can to keep her from getting away. He sabotages her relationship with her ex-boyfriend by showing him footage of their night together and threatens to expose an old case on her mother doing drugs if she tells her mother about their "relationship". He even forces her to reenact their night together, hoping that it will reignite her feelings for him, and almost drowns her when she rejects him in the climax.
openPost on the Film discussion page Film
So there are two posts on Film's discussion page that are bugging me. The first one was a piracy spam post and is no longer there (I'm assuming spammer's been bounced), but the other from 2013 is still there and includes an outbound link to a screenshot.
Does this require any action?
openFamily Unfriendly Aesop in Coco Film
Added this one to YMMV on Coco (while mentioning that it overlaps with Values Dissonance, as the setting is rural Mexico) and another troper deleted it. The aesop of the movie is "family comes first," and in this case, the main character's family forbids all music in the house and out of it and destroys his painstakingly handmade guitar. He eventually agrees that they were right, and is ready to give up music forever if they demand it of him, and although they all come around in the end and realize music is Neato, no one ever acknowledges that hey, maybe this poor kid was right about the whole "family is supposed to support you" thing. It's a great movie, but very, very much framed as a "dreams are great, but family is more important" moral.
Should I just put it under Values Dissonance?
openTropes deleted on certain page Film
I added a word of gay trope and the character in question was confirmed by both the director and the actor, yet it was deleted by another person without any context or comment. Should I put it back up?
openIs it right to split tropes like this? Film
The page for Dead Silence splits off the the spoiler tropes into another folder. Not only is that trying to get around the policy of not spoiler tagging trope names, but that whole list is zero context examples.
open What's this show/film called? Film
As the title says, I don't know this show. My profile picture is the image of what I'm trying to find, and I know it's very fuzzy, but any help would be extremely appreciated. :)
openThe Tearjerker page "A Quiet Place Film
Would it be okay to recreate the Tearjerker page for the movie?
I haven't done one of these before and I don't want to go willy-nilly and recreate it. Also I don't really know exactly what "Miscapitalized Name Spaces" are.
Edited by Minni128open Live action characters in miniature sets Film
Are there any films with live-action characters composed with built miniature sets as the background?
openLocking reason? Film
Coraline's movie page was locked and has not been listed with a reason why. So, what caused it? I'm not even sure this is the right place to ask, but the locked pages article said to come here.
Edited by 8BrickMarioopenEdit War start on Rogue One Film
On Rogue One, the Forgot About His Powers example has been removed for being speculative (i.e. arguable), since it's questionable whether or not Vader was aware of the data card being present. Troper NhazUl has added the example back without going through discussion.
Edited by StFanopen The Others and classing something under WMG or Alternate Character Interpretation Film
For some odd reason, I have a theory that Nicole Kidman's character in The Others, Grace, was possibly a collaborator when the Germans occupied the Channel Islands. I'd go into more detail about it but I don't want to spoil the film (even though it is 17 years old). Would this be something that would be categorized under WMG or Alternate Character Interpretation?
Edited by Lawman592openIs this example correct Film
So on Adaptional Villainy in the film section. This is listed there :
- James Bond: While the nefarious leader of SPECTRE, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, is evil, in Spectre, he is depicted as a jealous stepbrother who committed Patricide at a young age just for looking after Bond, and later formed SPECTRE to break 007's morale and life in any way possible. He later drills into Bond's head as part of his Cold-Blooded Torture, showcasing his dark and sadistic nature, and while doing this, he remains eerily calm and soft while doing this, all the while trying to weaken Bond's morale by abducting Madeleine Swann and imprisoning her somewhere inside the old MI 6 building, forcing 007 to a Sadistic Choice, where he can escape the exploding building and have him arrested, but remain wracked with the guilt and pain of not saving Swann, just as he couldn't rescue Vesper Lynd, or he can try to rescue her and risk dying in the explosion. As far as things go, Franz Oberhauser lacks the campyness of his previous versions, replacing them with chillingly realistic crimes and a terrible knack for personal vendettas, cruelty and sadism.
- And as far as SPECTRE is concerned, gone are the old days of campyness. It's now a properly cut-throat organization dabbling in barbaric practices such as slavery, counterfeit drugs, terrorism, regime change, and utilizing a network of well-equipped agents to do its bidding from behind the scenes and to tilt events in SPECTRE's favor. And its leader is a far more ruthless and completely brutal Diabolical Mastermind who kills mooks left, right and center. What's even worse is that SPECTRE even managed to compromise British intelligence via an asset who's ready to hand them over the crown jewels of the world's intelligence services on a silver platter, and with this, they'll have the capability to act on and utilize regardless of who gets destroyed in the process. Overall, Blofeld is FAR MORE monstrous and tyrannical than any of his previous incarnations, and SPECTRE is more malignant and callous than previously depicted, as Blofeld runs it like an absolutely totalitarian dictator.
- A few issues I'm having with this is Original film Blofield is pretty nasty in his own right. To give you some examples:
- He kills Bond's wife on there wedding day just to spite him.
- Tried to escalate the cold war to point of nuclear war.
- Created a laser to wipe out entire countries
- Fed one of his minons to a shark and kills his minions all the time.
So I have to ask is really Adaptational Villainy when the previous version has done just as much or possibly more evil shit than his adaption.
Edited by miraculousopenYou missed a few Circus of Fear things! Film
Hi!
Sorry to bother you but you missed a couple of movies in the Circus of Fear category!
Something Wicked This Way Comes. Not the book. The movie Disney produced.
RL Stine’s Monsterville: Cabinet of Souls. A made for TV movie.
And let’s not forget the Are You Afraid of the Dark episode, The Tale of the Silver Sight.
openNot sure about where information has been coming from for Avengers Infinity War. Film
- Lantern Jaw of Justice: Played with. He's a space tyrant with a god complex, but he still features a well defined jawline that you'd see on the various heroes to illustrate he's a Well-Intentioned Extremist meant to be a Foil to the good guys.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: This version of Thanos is driven to stop what he believes will eventually become an apocalyptic Overpopulation Crisis. By using the Infinity Gauntlet to wipe half of intelligent life, he'll be saving the other half from using up their natural resources faster than those resources can be replenished.
- Freudian Excuse:
- The majority of his species died after an Overpopulation Crisis led them to use up all the natural resources on his homeworld of Titan. Thanos believes it's his duty to stop such a tragedy from ever happening again... even if it means wiping out half the universe to save the other half.
- He was also ostracized during his childhood due to his genetic deformity, which played a major role in shaping his personality.
- Adaptational Heroism: In the comics, Thanos is a Death worshiper who killed half the universe as an offering to his "love". In the MCU, Thanos is a true Well-Intentioned Extremist who believes killing trillions is a necessary evil to "save the universe from itself" and protect trillions more from resource wars, overpopulation, and permanent environmental damage to their own homes.
Where has this information been coming from? I have not found any sources for this anywhere other than this site. I'm tempted to say this might be fake, as the movie hasn't come out yet for starters.
openEnglish titles of two foreign language films Film
There are work pages for That Obscure Object of Desire as well as the most recent winner of the Foreign Language Film Oscar, A Fantastic Woman. However, both are under their original foreign-language titles, Cet obscur objet du désir and Una mujer fantástica. Isn't that a no-no?
This was added to the Harsher in Hindsight entry about Mako:
Though Amara does pass this test, and this movie does what the original didn't and passed the conventional Bechdel test, having several female characters talking to each other on the course of the movie with no conversation being about romance or girly stuff.
It seems to me like a Justifying Edit trying to downplay of one of the most recurring criticisms of the movie. While it's something that might be worth mentioning somewhere (not really sure where to move it), I think it shouldn't be part of the Harsher in Hindsight entry.
