Author's Saving Throw cleanup

Go To

I was inspired by the TRS post I made because there's still a mess of gushing and preemptive troping in the examples despite the definition of the trope being expanded. Like this for example:

YMMV.Super Mario 64

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • In the Shoshinkai demo, taking care of Bowser was too easy: all you had to do was swing him by the tail and throw him at one of the bombs. In the final product, this was only the first of three Bowser fights, with the next two becoming progressively more difficult.
    • Once you make it to the top of Peach's castle, the back of it looks entirely unfinished. This was fixed in the DS remake where they covered it with a green hill.

I don't think the first example counts because that was prerelease. It's not like anyone other than the press had access to that version of the game. The second might count though.

Update: As of September 2022, per this TRS thread, examples should be moved from YMMV subpages to Trivia, and they require confirmation from Word of God and/or Word of Saint Paul regarding why the work was changed, so any on-page examples and wicks that don't fit the new restrictions must be removed. In-universe examples do not have this restriction. If the removal of examples on subpages renders the subpage too small, or if there are no valid examples left, Cut List the subpage, and, if there are any valid examples left, move them to the parent page (either the main page for Author's Saving Throw or a work's Trivia subpage).

If removing examples, consider whether they may fit Salvaged Story instead. For removals lacking creator conformation, there is an AST salvaging archive for sorting examples. Please put them there.

This trope required the author to admit that they made the change because of fan complaints. I don't see any of that in the entry.

These are the now-deleted AST entries for YMMV.The Legend Of Heroes Kuro No Kiseki and I'm curious if some these entries count as ISA or not

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • Prior to the Calvard arc's official start, many fans had taken issue with how the Erebonia arc had very minimal reported casualties onscreen despite the focus on war and students attending a military academy, with Cold Steel IV and Reverie in particular barely having any real deaths in general. Kuro I made sure that the shift in tone would be very noticeable with people actually dying onscreen, and Van averting the unspoken "Thou Shalt Not Kill" policy arc protagonists previously had by personally killing Aida onscreen as early as Chapter 1. unsure
    • The return of fishing in Kuro II was quite the positive piece of news for those disappointed with the feature's exclusion in the first game. maybe
    • For those who felt as though field battles were too bare-bones in the first game, Kuro II throwing Arts into the mix was a welcome addition. unsure
    • Granting enemy characters the ability to use S-Breaks has been fairly well-received, as it theoretically adds a bit more difficulty to boss battles. Bosses used S-breaks is common in other Trails games iirc
    • Kuro II introduces Connect Events that cover multiple characters at once, such as one for Feri & Aaron. This is largely seen as a step in the right direction, as a common complaint for Bonding Events and their variations was how the interactions within them are often limited to just the protagonist and the one character who triggered it. seems valid

Found these at Trivia.Deltarune

  • Author's Saving Throw: Deltarune addresses many criticism of Undertale, including the followings:
    • A common complaint was how the Pacifist Run adhered to the Crime of Self-Defense trope, requiring players to not attack creatures intent on murdering you. By comparison, Deltarune takes a more realistic approach, featuring enemies that can only be placated by tiring them out and casting a spell on them. Additionally, while winning fights through violence prevents enemies from being recruited, doing so will not cause the story to diverge from the Pacifist route like in Undertale, unless the player actively seeks out the Weird Route, which requires a much more active and intentional form of villainy.
    • The game is also less condemning of violence against foes with zero redeeming qualities to them. The King outright exploits the characters in a Pacifist Run by claiming to have a Freudian Excuse and being willing to talk it out after his battle, only to sneak attack the characters after he tricks Ralsei into healing him. Ultimately, he doesn't pull a Heel–Face Turn; either he's overthrown by Lancer and his subjects and thrown into the dungeon, or Ralsei realizes the King had tired himself out and uses the Pacify spell to tranquilize him, depending on whether you made a "kill" on regular encounters.
    • One of the complaints in Undertale that Toby Fox agreed with was the player character's movement speed was far too slow. This game allows you to either hold down a key/button to run, or choose the option to auto-run. The slow movement speed is even referred to in-game, as, during the beginning portion, Susie repeatedly complains about Kris walking too slowly if you're not using the game's newly-added run button.

I think the third one is the only one valid since Fox acknowledged the criticism of the "no run button" but I'm unsure of the other two.

Also bumping [up], since I got no response.

[up]Just cut those that don't confirm the creators acknowledged the issue and made the fixes in response.

  • Sonic X
    • Within the Archie comic line, many see the Lighter and Softer direction as this in relation to the main comic going through its biggest Audience-Alienating Era. The main thing was that at the time, the main comic had devolved into Love Triangle drama at least once an issue, and stories that had potential to be decent not living up to said potential, while the Sonic X comics, while not without their research faults, were closer to what people actually wanted out of a Sonic comic, with the action, adventure and humor expected out of the franchise at this point. Said Audience-Alienating Era didn't last, however, and one could argue this paved the way for a better future for the main comic.
    • Within the Sonic X franchise itself, the comic is noted for circumventing some of the flaws of its animated counterpart, namely by downplaying the formulaic storylines like making Eggman the center limelight near the end of the series for example, moderating Chris' role in favor of making Sonic and Tails the center limelight like they should have been in the first place since Chris is not the titular protagonist, undoing a lot of the Flanderization that befallen the later episodes of the anime like Amy's Tsundere traits, and adding even more Mythology Gags to the games themselves. In addition in spite of using the English dub as basis, it generally has more witty, less Narm writing that's more consistent with the Japanese renditions.

Anything these can be moved to?

Last week, I removed this example from YMMV.Jojos Bizarre Adventure The JOJO Lands due to the trope not being YMMV and lacking a citation:

  • Author's Saving Throw: A reccurent criticism of Araki's art was the lack of diversity in body types, especially when it comes to fat people, who are amost always designed with Gonkish proportions compared to the rest of the cast. As such, Meryl May Qi being a (mostly) realistically proportioned Big Beautiful Woman was well-received among the people who had held the previous criticism.

RWBYraikou888 re-added it under Salvaged Story with no changes to the text aside from fixing a typo. I don't think it's really an example, as it's not about an unpopular plot element being being improved.

I sent a PM to avoid an Edit War since I did remove the example last time, but haven't received a response despite the troper still being active, so I'd like to get some consensus before removing it again.

Time to bump this thread.

Trivia.Thomas And Friends All Engines Go

  • Author's Saving Throw: For all the flak the series gets on a daily basis, fans universally praise the show's original character of Bruno the Brake Car, who unlike many other examples of autism in fiction is portrayed as authentic and tasteful due to extensive efforts on the showrunners' parts to consult mental health experts for input. The fact that the other characters accept him for who he is and care for him as much as they do each other also received praise from an otherwise very finicky fanbase.

This just sounds like "Writers did something competent" rather than "Writers took feedback from fans to make the show better". Also slight jab at the Thomas fanbase at the end.

I do think the praise this character gets is worth mentioning somewhere, maybe an Ensemble Dark Horse or Shown Their Work entry?

Is this example of Salvaged Story correct?

From YMMV.The Legend Of Heroes Trails Into Reverie

  • Salvaged Story: Reverie has earned praise for spinning some of the most divisive aspects of the Cold Steel arc into well-liked plotlines: The great war in Cold Steel 4 lasting only a few hours and causing minimal bloodshed directly motivates a new group of antagonists (who seek to restart it), Rean has to deal with accidentally becoming an icon for said Erebonian extremists, and his martyrdom complex is finally addressed and deconstructed.

Is this example of Salvaged Story correct?

  • gen:LOCK: The Union were heavily criticised in Season 1 for being generic villains with no backstory, with the series never explaining why they seek to control the world. Season 2's press summary makes a point to mention that the series will gain several Union characters as PO Vs to show their side of the war and why they fight.

It just seems to be "Fans criticise lack of Union info in Season 1; Season 2 gives more Union info" to me.

Given that a completely different team and company produced Season 2 compared with Season 1, I'm not sure we can claim it's responded to fan criticism either (in fact, the fandom has widely panned Season 2, as have individuals from the original company that worked on Season 1).

[up]It's Author's Saving Throw if it's stated as in response to complaints. If it failed to win audiences doesn't make it not an examples unless they didn't actually make the promised fix. Did they state it was in response to complaints?

Under the Author's Saving Throw Examples, AuthorsSavingThrow.Western Animation was removed as a link, replaced with "Western Animation" (no link), as all examples lacked citation. Kimiimaro added the link back, which now redirects to SalvagedStory.Western Animation where the examples were moved.

I believe it is incorrect for list to redirect to different tropes, especially those spilt off due to misuse. Correct?

A different company produced the second season. Neither the fans nor the creators of the first season liked the second season, so it doesn't appear to have anything to do with fan criticism of the first season. There were massive shenanigans going on behind the scenes during the production of the first season that resulted in the second season being done elsewhere. As a result, all we really know is that a second company took over to get the second season done. We have no idea what decisions were made about the second season's storyline or whether any were in response to the fandom's reaction to Season 1. Unless there's a source somewhere, the entry just seems like speculation.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania:

  • Salvaged Story:
    • Some fans have criticized the MCU in general for how quickly the world seems to have moved on from The Blip in such a short time. This movie makes a point that there are plenty of people who are still feeling the effects, even if the rest of the world is no longer paying attention, and Hope and Cassie are said to be doing their part to help them.
    • Similarly, some fans harshly criticized the season finale of Ms. Marvel (2022) for the scene where the cops stand up to Damage Control, finding it tone deaf given the public focus on police brutality incidents. Here, Cassie Lang is confirmed to be specifically standing up to police violence, calling an officer out for firing tear gas at peaceful protesters.
    • One of the most prominent criticisms of the first Ant-Man film was its depiction of Darren Cross as a one-note Big Bad with little other development for him as a character. His usage of the Yellowjacket suit was similarly disliked because of how it gave him the same powers as Scott did, making the battle between them rather boring. This film reintroduces Cross as the Laughably Evil M.O.D.O.K, which made his interactions with Scott and his family much more interesting than he was previously. Being a deformed cyborg also means his abilities are very different now, giving his fight with Cassie more of an edge during the climax.
    • The Wasp's outfit from the previous and Endgame received criticism for its green and brown color scheme being too muted, making it difficult to see in darker environments. Hope receives a new costume in this film that has black and honey-yellow coloring, not only making it easier to see, but is Truer to the Text for how the Wasp's suit was depicted in the comics.
    • While it's true that Scott's outing with the Avengers in Germany had bad consequences for them, some people had issues with Hank and Hope being overly antagonistic to Scott in the previous movie, as it felt like it was repeating the same dynamics as the first film without adding much else, especially as they were forcing him to help them bring Janet back from the Quantum Realm. This film begins with Scott and the Pym-Van Dyne family on far better terms, with Hope rekindling her relationship with him and Hank explicitly telling Scott that he's proud of him for what he's accomplished. With Cassie acting as a surrogate granddaughter for Hank, they feel far more like a cohesive family unit now.
    • A lot of people who watched Loki had become frustrated that for all the hype put into Sylvie killing He Who Remains and creating the Multiverse, none of the stories that extensively involved the Multiverse really acknowledged the events of the show. The mid-credits Stinger of this film shows the branching timelines seen at the end of the first season to give a Continuity Nod to the Season 1 finale, while the post-credit scene reveals Loki and Mobius themselves spying on a Kang variant in Victorian England, reaffirming the God of Mischief's connection to the new Big Bad of the MCU.
    • Many fans and critics have noted that the heroes of the MCU seem to hoard their technology, with society appearing more or less identical to the real world despite the development of arc reactors, advanced nanomachines, et cetera. This film explicitly shows Hope running an organization that uses Pym particle technology for various humanitarian and environmental efforts, firmly averting Reed Richards Is Useless.
    • Throughout the Ant-Man films, Hank and Janet have primarily remained as Retired Badass characters who rarely participate in the action outside of flashbacks, which miffed some people who were familiar with their statuses as founding Avengers in the source material. This film gives Hank and Janet a lot more to do, with Janet having a personal connection to the film's Big Bad, and Hank using his army of ants to fight against the Conqueror's forces.

The thing is, this movie was largely panned by critics. Were there people who found these changes to be an improvement?

Kingdom Hearts III: Re𝄌Mind

  • Author's Saving Throw: Several features introduced with the DLC were direct responses to criticisms of the base game.
    • The Final Fantasy characters return after much criticism was laid at their falling Out of Focus as the series had gone on (due to the concept of a Disney-FF crossover no longer being novel and the original characters being popular enough to sustain the series alone), even from Nomura’s own team.
    • Kairi officially graduates to a playable Action Girl after harsh criticism for being a fridged Faux Action Girl in the base game.
    • The Limit Cut sees the Organization members as bosses at their canonical strength after criticism was laid at the easy Boss Rush against them, a decision made to make the game more accessible for newcomers. They also possess unique, reworked gameplay mechanics, attacks, and boss themes (save Dark Riku and Vanitas, who use a cutscene's version of "Forze Del Male" and his already used III rendition of his theme, respectively) when the data bosses of Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix had long been criticized for simply having the same bosses with buffed stats and attacks and the same boss themes.
    • The titular campaign and Data Greeting allow exploration of Scala ad Caelum after players were disappointed that it was almost entirely a boss arena in the game's climax.
    • Aqua, Riku, Roxas, and Mickey have playable segments added following criticism of Sora's omnipresence in the climax.
    • The DLC has an early scene in which Master Xehanort, Saïx, and Xigbar discuss their membership to address player complaints about where some of their members came from, particularly Terra-Xehanort and Xion.
    • Scenes are added to explain Aqua's freezing up after Terra-Xehanort's initial attack, what the Guardians of Light did while Sora fought Master Xehanort, more of Xehanort's motivations to clear up his final Motive Rant, and the whereabouts of other characters during the climax like Demyx and Lingering Will; all points of contention within the fandom.
      • One scene in Scala also depicts Sora as still being hostile to Master Xehanort despite knowing his true intentions by this point, whereas fans had criticized the base game for making it appear Xehanort was Easily Forgiven once he peacefully surrendered.

None of these cite any staff stating this was a response to fans, except maybe the first one. it feels like this was just copy-pasted to trivia after it was made, without seeing if the developers said anything about this.

Young Sheldon:

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • The episode that reveals how Sheldon adopted "Bazinga" as his catchphrase also makes it clear that his habit of saying it after pulling not-all-that-funny jokes was itself not all that funny.
    • You can tell just by watching the show that the creators have gone out of their way to not repeat the things that many have criticized The Big Bang Theory for. For instance, the show is presented as a single-camera, laugh track-less dramedy shot on-location as opposed to the outdated, but still widely used three-camera sitcom shot on a sound stage in front of a studio audience. The characters on Young Sheldon are likable and sympathetic despite their flaws, as opposed to the Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonists on Big Bang. (i.e. Sheldon having more redeeming qualities, Mary being less aggressive with her religious beliefs, George Sr. being a normal husband and father instead of the drunken, idiotic, misogynist described posthumously in Big Bang).

I don't think the first one really counts, because I'm pretty sure that "Bazinga" wasn't supposed to be funny. One of Sheldon's character traits is his poor sense of humor after all.

Found these on Trivia.Shin Megami Tensei V

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • After both a long wait time for information and Atlus building a reputation for long gaps between Japanese and Western releasesnote , the game was announced to be simultaneously released worldwide. No Word of God
    • After Lucifer, Lilith, and the Archangels’ polarizing designs in Shin Megami Tensei IV, the trailers confirmed that they would return to their designs from Shin Megami Tensei II in this game. No Word of God
    • Previews note that negotiation has been made a lot less random and more personalized to each Demon, and Demons will no longer run away with your items unless you say something to directly piss them off afterwards. There's also a Magatsuhi Skill for making Negotiation easier, if you need it. Again, no Word of God
    • After the complete lack of a defence stat in Shin Megami Tensei IV proved contentious for turning battles into Rocket-Tag Gameplay, this game will bring back the Vitality stat. Once again, No Word of God
    • Law and Chaos continue their move away from general ideological insanity, with the Law faction generally trying to protect people and put a new Creator on the throne of Heaven, while hoping to have their cake and eat it too with a Creator and free will at the same time, while Chaos is attempting to create a world of diverse and free thought where people make their own choices. Unfortunately, the most Law-flavored ending has you side with Abidel and her hardliner stance, but the ending narration implies the Nahobino is still a lot gentler than YHVH ever was. Need to be said? No Word of God
    • Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is intended to be this for both fans and the game's developers. One of the main criticisms of the original game was its sparse story and the developers being unable to implement most of their ideas, so Vengeance is their way of rectifying that with new story and content, as well as various quality of life improvements such as reworking the infamous level scaling. Also, it finally releasing on other platforms than the Switch is one for the players who felt that the game was being held back graphically by the platform compared to other modern Atlus titles. The rest of this bullet is valid but the bolded part is italicized part has, you guessed it, no Word of God (at least to my knowledge)

Trivia.Splatoon 3

  • Author's Saving Throw: Among the most infamous That One Levels in Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion are the ones where Agent 8 must roll an 8-ball across an obstacle course to a goal. Dropping the ball into a pit means failing the test and losing a life — and you will drop the ball, thanks to the finicky physics and tight paths you have to roll them across. In Side Order, ball-rolling stages return. The first time you enter one, Pearl groans "Not again!" in dismay... only for Acht to tell her to cool it, because these balls can't fall off the stage.
I removed this basing on the fact that this is in-universe dialogue, not Word of God, but it was reverted back with a comment that it's not a misuse. So I'm checking in here to ask. Is this a correct use?
