Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Here's my write-up for Phantom.

Hidden Phantom is the leader of the Zan'ei Army and the most professional of the Four Guardians of Neo Arcadia. Before encountering Zero in front of an old factory, Phantom scatters bombs throughout the building in an attempt to further hinder the heroes. His desire to help others while destroying Mavericks is strong enough for him to make a final attempt to kill Zero before he dies. After being encountered in Cyberspace over a year later, he decides to test Zero's resolve after having learned that his body is a weaker version of Omega's. Upon defeat, Phantom reacts with dignity, urging Zero to show the world what he's able truly capable of.

I'm going to do something a little different for this effortpost with a few counterpoints that are usually used against ol' Sherlock in The Great Ace Attorney duology.

     Counterpoints and effortpost

He's a dumbass/his deductions don't make sense

This is actually INTENTIONAL on his part, Obfuscating Stupidity to the nth degree, to seem like a Bunny-Ears Lawyer, and while he is a tad scatterbrained at times, he's easily one of, if not the, smartest and most scientifically logical detective thus far. It's even said on his character page which says, and I quote: "Although it is implied that he makes them deliberately wrong to help Ryuunoske improve his deductions, Sherlock is still extremely scatterbrained." as this is quickly disproven by the fact he knew all along Kazuma wasn't dead, and he knows exactly what Mael Stronghart would say during to defend himself, and planted a video camera at the courtroom with not a soul figuring out his technology, allowing him to literally make a fool out of Stronghart (and keep in mind, this is someone who had everything planned out and expelled Holmes from the courtroom, knowing perfectly well what he was capable of early on)...

...while broadcasting every single moment of the trial to Queen Victoria using a holographic phone, who proceeds to demote and put Stronghart on trial leading to his true Villainous Breakdown. He, and by extension Iris, invent gadgets that would be incredibly implausible by late 19th century standards, let alone early 20th century, like the aforementioned holograph recording machine like a super advanced telephone, a camera that takes pictures of an entire shop, a cat door maker, a speedy evidence analyzer, even forensics more advanced than any coroner at the time, and so on. Also, if the narration of the game is any clue, his deductions weren't always like that, proving that he puts on a big front so he can swoop in to save the day and brilliantly take ahold of any situation.

He's too nice/a Guile Hero

Let's see, simply counting the moments where he deceives and lies, he's deceived Naruhodo and Susato, as well as the entire Empire of Japan, about Kazuma Asogi, he lies to Iris Watson about the person she believed to be her father, Dr. John A Watson being not the real Watson, as well as not actually being Dr. Watson, but Klint Van Zieks, and his relation with Japanese!Watson also known as Yuujin Mikotoba, albeit for a reasonable reason. (He didn't want Iris to know she was the daughter of a serial killer) Though he does say Watson was a doctor of medicine which is true for both false Watson and the real Watson, Yuujin. He deliberately holds information from Naruhodo, Susato (which he aids in Dr. Mikotoba's deception of the good doctor being ill, which was really was in fact a ruse to prevent Susato from finding out the meaning behind the dog collar they found in Resolve Case 2), Iris (her parenthood, and the truth behind the Hound of the Baskerville), and often deliberately makes up falsehoods, and messes with Ryunosuke to help him stand on his own as a sort of stealth mentor as well as a trickster mentor.

There's also the fact he lies and conceals the truth about the Reaper of the Bailey from everyone and the significance of Enoch Drebber being an Accidental Witness to Mael Stronghart and Seishiro Jigoku trying to bargain with Genshin Asogi forcing them to kill him, when they really genuinely wanted to keep him alive. Then there's him arresting Soseki Natsume not once but twice, falsely. He's definitely not racist, as his interactions with Mikotoba, Susato, and Ryunosuke show and he knew Natsume was innocent all along of both crimes.

So yeah, I'd say he's bastardly enough.

I tried to explain as much as I could without giving too much away, but I think we have a winner in yet another Sherlock.

Was that a more satisfactory effortpost?

[down][down]I did, he's in the drafts now.

Klavice again you do have enough upvotes for Kazuma, so please write him up.

Scratch that didn't read the bottom of the last page, sorry 😅...

For Herlock Sholmes, why is the decieving bastardly? Lying isn't inherently ignoble. Would the lies endanger people? You say he falsely arrests someone. Was that to protect the person?

I would prefer a proper EP.

On the subject of Sherlock Holmes, I'm kinda considering doing an EP on the original Jeffrey Hope from A Study in Scarlet. Only thing that makes me hesitate is that, while he's certainly smart, Holmes solves the case with minimal difficulty. He did outsmart Holmes once early in the book where Jeffrey didn't fall for a trap Holmes set while still getting his hands on the bait Sherlock set, but that's it.

Kinda wondering if he'd be worth proposing if he's still far more intelligent than the rest of the cast, but notably below Holmes himself.

My third (and hopefully not final) Psych candidate is one who I actually thought about when I first suggested Pierre, but wasn't sure if he qualified for reasons I will get into.

The Work

I EP'ed this show twice, so I won't summarize it again. The candidate this time around is Captain James Tiberius Kirk.

(OK, not really)

The candidate this time around is Frank O'Hara (Played by William Shatner), the estranged father of Juliet O'Hara (Side note: her brother is JOHN CENA!!!!! - no, I couldn't resist it). His first appearance is in the Season 6 episode In for a Penny

The Candidate

The episode sees Shawn and Gus planning a "30th birthday bash" for Jules and they notice a postcard on her desk. She tells them that it is from her father, who she resents for not interacting with her for 30 years. She tells Shawn that she has no intention of reaching out to him, but Shawn being Shawn decides to pay him a visit with the intention of brokering a reunion between the two.

Upon meeting Frank, Shawn is impressed to see that he is a mansion-dwelling millionaire, and he encourages him fix his relationship with Jules. When Shawn tells her what he did, she is pissed at him for going behind her back, and tells him that her dad is actually a con man and criminal, and that mansion wasn't his.

Shawn is shocked at Frank, but the latter assures him that Shawn's words of encouragement convinced him to try an mend his relationship with his daughter. He attempts this by contributing to an investigation on a prison break that happened earlier in the episode (much to Jules' chagrin). While Lassiter believes that the prison break out was their endgame, Frank believes that the criminals needed the prisoner's skills as a safe-cracker for a much bigger score.

Frank turns out to be right when Lassiter gets a call saying that some construction equipment was just reported as stolen. He theorizes that the criminals are going to use the stolen equipment for another break-in in the next 24 hours, and tells Jules to keep a close eye on the leader of the crew, Chad Emigh.

When Shawn gets a call from Jules regarding complaints of construction noise downtown, he decides to hire Frank to help with the case so that he can get back in his daughters good graces. They show up to the scene and realize that a series of underground vaults were broken into and an entire safe was stolen. Frank makes a suggestion that leads Shawn to predict that the criminals are after a rare penny worth 2 million dollars that will be showcased at a Coin Expo.

The SBPD question the head of the Coin Expo, who tells them that they have taken all necessary precautions with security for the coin. Frank suggests to look for an Inside Man in the expo, who is revealed to be the electrician. Chief Vick orders that the entire SBPD stakeout the Expo, but this doesn't work, as Frank fails to catch the criminals (instead causing the cops to tackle random civilians) and the real penny is stolen anyways.

Frank decides to take himself off the case out of humiliation. However, when Shawn looks at the surveillance photos of the crime, he notices a birthmark on one of the thieves necks which leads him to flashback to the same birthmark he saw on one of Frank's friends at the mansion. From this, Shawn realizes that Frank remotely engineered the con.

Shawn confronts Frank and calls him out for prioritizing a heist over his relationship with his daughter. Frank explains that he only thought up the con when he was in the SBPD office, and he saw the coin as an opportunity. Shawn tells Frank that he will give him time to return the coin, else he will tell Jules everything.

Later, Jules gets an anonymous tip about where the coin is. While she is interrogating the suspect, she quickly realizes that her father planted the coin in the suspects room when he talks about how "the window was taken apart and put back together", something her father would do with her window to leave behind gifts. A fuming Jules confronts her dad and tears him a new one and tells him she never wants to see him again.

Since there was no evidence to support an arrest, Chad had to be let go. However Shawn deduces that his group is going to rob The Santa Barbara Bowl, which Jules confirms based on ticket stubs found in Chad's room. Shawn tells Frank not to come for the stakeout, saying that if Frank wants to mend his relationship with his daughter, he must "throw himself at her feet and beg for mercy".

However, Frank shows up anyways, to apologize to Jules for his actions, and tells her that he really was present at many of her childhood functions (even listing specific occasions). He never told her because he felt she was doing fine under her step-father and he didn't want his presence to embarrass her. Jules assures him that while she was disappointed in him, she was never embarrassed.

As Frank leaves the van, he recognizes a suspicious man and alerts the team. Shawn then notices a radio van with a non existent radio station. Frank comes up with a plan to catch the thieves – let the criminals carry out the act and return to the van, but they won't know that Lassiter is driving them to the police station to be arrested. Frank's plan works, the thieves are finally caught.

At the birthday bash, Shawn confronts Frank about the whereabouts of the real penny, to which he confesses that an associate is 'restoring' the real penny to police custody as they speak.

He only shows up in one future episode (Here's Lassie, at the very end), where Shawn apparently sent him a message saying that he wanted to propose to Jules and was looking for his approval. Frank approves - on the condition that he is honest with her.

Magnificence

He shows his ability to scheme as he plans a heist (apparently on the fly) and at the end of the day, no one suspects him of anything. The only reason why Shawn figures out his scheme is because he is hyper observant. When Shawn threatens to tell Jules the truth, he manages to frame Chad, even if he is released shortly after, and still no one suspects him. While Jules figures out what he did, even she is fooled at first, and is only suspicious after the suspect being interrogated uses a very specific phrase. Frank also comes up with the final plan to catch the criminals once and for all.

Bastardry

He is a con man who is living in another persons house. He also frames another criminal for a theft, to save his relationship with his daughter. Also, him prioritizing cons and money over his daughter is presented as an unambiguously low act.

However, he justifies the mansion squatting by saying that is belongs to a corrupt CEO, and he was planning on leaving it the way he found it. He also genuinely wants to reconnect with his daughter, and part of the reason why he never reached out to her was because he thought her step-father was doing a good job as is.

Mitigating Factors

This might be a big one. When Jules figures out his plan, his first reaction is to book it. However, I think he had a more dignified reaction than Pierre did when Shawn was "botching" his investigation, and like Pierre, he redeems himself and bounces back.

Also, I think that Jefferson Hope would probably count. He's had of the police before they call in Holmes, after all.

Alrighty, since Gravedigger for Black Lightning (2018) / Arrowverse seems to be a unanimous "Yes", here's the write-up. Feel free to tweak it as you see fit.

  • Tyson Sykes aka Gravedigger, the first recorded metahuman and Great-granduncle to Jefferson Pierce, is the brains behind the Invasion of Freeland in Season 3. Having been used as a living weapon by the U.S.-government for decades, Sykes eventually grew tired of being a tool to a country that constantly dehumanized him and defected to Markovia. Convincing the Markovian government to forcefully extract all metahumans from Freeland to supposedly use them as weapons, Sykes's true plan is to create a safe and independent nation, where all gifted individuals can live in peace and without fear of prejudice. Committed to letting nothing get in the way of his goals, Sykes is willing to brainwash and even kill anybody who gets in his way, not being afraid to get his own hands dirty on numerous occasions. Despite several setbacks, Sykes never loses his composure or sight of his overall goals. Even after he gets stripped of his powers and his plans are foiled, he manages to make it out alive, getting closure after decades of violence when seeing his actions contribute to the dissolution of the A.S.A. Charming, charismatic and earning his Codename by giving every single one of his killed enemies a proper burial, Gravedigger stands out from all the villains Jefferson faced in his career as Black Lightning.

    • Death Weavers: Sando, an echo with the appearance of an elderly beggar, is in truth one of Ramarro's Co-Dragons. Proposing reasonable bindings to his marks and disguising any eccentricities under the explanation that it protects him from the call of the homesong, Sando ingratiates himself to Cole by repeatedly helping him avoid capture. Sando uses this trust to manipulate Mira into a situation where she can be captured without risking damage to her physical body, and initiates another deal with their ally Desmond to trick Cole into leading him straight to Destiny.
