Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Yes to Batman.

P.S. It's nice to see someone else voicing the opinion of more issues and story arcs kind of being their own stories and that attempts to tie all of them together can be problematic.

'Yes' to Batman

Nice catch on that j, I've seen the film and Joe is a hard no, he's a creepy, abusive dick who agrees to murder someone so long as he gets to sleep with his clients' teenage daughter and does lots of other vile shit. He's not a CM, but he's certainly got the nastiness of one. MB he is not.

Yes to Batman there. Great job!

Also I'll probably have more soon but not liking how many things are pending:

  • Rebuild of Evangelion:
    • Mari Makinami Illustrious is a confident, flirtatious Evangelion pilot. Introduced tricking NERV into allowing her to pilot the experimental Unit-05, Mari manages to use the flawed prototype's self-destruct mechanism to destroy an Angel. Casually ready to accept death during Near-Third Impact, when she survives Mari joins WILLE to help stop Gendo Ikari and NERV, fighting brutally but effectively to reclaim land "purified" with L Contamination for humanity to live on once again. Confronting her old mentor and having her true name "Mary/Maria (of) Iscariot" revealed, she sacrifices her combined Evangelion to allow hero Shinji Ikari a chance to reset and right the world.
  • Space Sweepers: Jang Hyun-sook is the Captain of the "sweeper" ship the Victory. A former Child Prodigy forced into a life of piracy after an assassination attempt on the evil James Sullivan, Jang takes to cleverly winning cargo for her crew until they stumble upon the young girl Dorothy. Outwitting a space policeman to escape with the stowaway, Jang charmingly gathers the universe's sweepers in a plot to trick Sullivan, exposing his plans to eradicate the Earth and getting rewarded handsomely for her efforts.
  • Tenet:
    • The Protagonist himself is the secret leader of the titular organization in the future. Ensuring his own past self's recruitment by a seemingly suicidal test, the Protagonist sends his counterpart on a quest to stop the evil Andrei Sator from using the Algorithm to end the world. Even making a pact with a notorious Arms Dealer and allowing his past self and underlings to fight Sator and his men in public spaces, the Protagonist eventually uncovers Sator's full scheme to launch one final decisive battle against his forces. Stopping Sator even as it costs the sacrifice of his best friend Neil, the Protagonist saves the world and accepts his role in Tenet's founding.

The writeup for Slevin Kelevra (YMMV.Lucky Number Slevin) has a run-on sentence:

Slevin spent years plotting the demise of his parents' killers with Goodkat's help killed the Boss' son and both bosses' book keepers to make them even more paranoid of each other after they had already previously broken up their partnership.

Checking a plot summary, I think it's trying to say:

Slevin spent years plotting the demise of his parents' killers, and with Goodkat's help, killed the Boss' son and both bosses' book keepers to make them even more paranoid of each other after they had already previously broken up their partnership.

I think the last part could use a slight rewording, too. How's this?

Slevin spent years plotting the demise of his parents' killers, and with Goodkat's help, killed the Boss' son and both bosses' book keepers to make them even more paranoid of each other in the aftermath of their broken partnership.

Yes to Moriarty and Batman.

I have a question. Do you guys think we should move The Music Meister to the Multiple Series header on Arrowverse since he is technically on two shows? Even if one is mostly a cameo at the end of an episode.

Also I've got a question which is probably really dumb but... if a character gets over his or her prejudice, would they count for this trope if they are enough of a bastard after?

I have an EP (almost) at the ready but it's a bit of a doozy in length although I've looked over and trimmed wherever I could. I think it's good enough for a first EP, just wanted to cover all the possible factors for and against this character qualifying. Alright, I have an EP for a somewhat obscure source. I offer some optional background music of the character's OST for those who can open a background tab, if you want to. Now to the EP.

So, what's the work?

BoBoiBoy is the Malaysian animated show where the titularly-named elementally-powered Kid Hero and his friends (Gopal, Yaya, Ying and Fang) fight evil aliens and other bad guys. Had a three season run from 2011 to 2016 before its sequel series BoBoiBoy Galaxy launched in late 2016, where they take the fight to space. The character in question appears in both installments.

     Captain Kaizo and his actions in the series finale

Who is Captain Kaizo?

Kaizo (aka The Legendary Space Rebel) is the adult Human Alien captain of his own team. He has energy powers and features as an antagonist in the finale of the series' final season. (Though he does return in the sequel series, his arc as an antagonist has passed, but his actions then are given after this folder's info.)

Actions: (an attempt to summarise was made, I swear)

Several months earlier, Kaizo dispatched his teammate and younger brother Fang on Earth to retrieve the power bands, under the order to keep his identity secret and use force when necessary. Kaizo then leaves Fang behind, claiming he'd need more time with this mission since the wielders of the power bands were unknown, and that he'd return at the right time. Several months later, when he was already friends with BoBoiBoy's gang (aka the wielders of the power bands), Fang receives a transmission and is AWOL from his friends for some time.

BoBoiBoy and co. gain word from Adu Du and Probe that an old common enemy, Ejo Jo, was coming back so they're ready to fight him again. Ejo Jo did return, far more upgraded and prepared than before. It took four episodes for them to beat him last time, so they seem to be in for a long battle. Suddenly, another spaceship arrives and from it descends a masked man with an energy sword and a purple frog-like alien who destroy Ejo Jo's new Power Armor, decimate his battle robots, and force Ejo Jo's ship to crash-land, all in a matter of minutes. The gang tries to process what just happened until they notice Fang approach the alien newcomers. Adu Du recognises the masked man's logo and is fearful to learn that the Legendary Space Rebel, Captain Kaizo, was in their midst, so he runs away.

After Fang confirms the identities of the wielders to him, an unmasked Kaizo introduces himself and Lieutenant Lahap (the purple one) to the humans, and state that they want their powers. Furthermore, Fang wasn't the person they thought he was. He was actually a Human Alien, had Intangibility powers before Ochobot gave him shadow manipulation, and (according to Kaizo) he was never their friend. When they refuse to give up their powers, Kaizo insists that Fang would take them by force. A reluctant fight between friends diverged into a duel between BoBoiBoy and Fang when the latter defends Kaizo from the former's attacks - but their friends get them to stop.

Kaizo then restrains Fang and is about to punish him with his sword until BoBoiBoy sends a Golem punch his way, but Kaizo blocks it off and forms an energy barrier around his own team. BBB insists on fighting, so Kaizo directs the energy from the barrier and Fang's restraints into his sword, but Gopal, Ying and Yaya can't reach Fang as they have Lahap instead to contend with. When the alien team is close to really hurting them, Fang uses Shadow Hands to seize his friends' power bands and hands them to Kaizo, reaffirming his loyalty and convincing him that the Earthlings weren't their fight. As Fang is about to leave, BBB grabs onto his ankle in protest. When Fang kicks him away and denies their friendship, Kaizo looks satisfied. The two Human Aliens disappear onto the ship.

Team BoBoiBoy get Adu Du to give them a ride on his spaceship, and are launched via escape pod onto Kaizo's ship in space. They demand their power bands back, and Kaizo says he'll allow it if they beat him in a rematch. Kaizo then looks upwards at Fang, invisible above the area. He knew Fang snuck off to steal the power bands, and announces that he better come save his friends before Lahap destroys them. Fang jumps down right before Lahap's blast hits, using Intangibility to make the attack go right through them, but it blasts the wall behind them. Fang returns the power bands to the Earthlings and Kaizo slashes Fang's mask as retribution before pushing them to be sucked out of the ship and onto the platform serving as the Battlefield Training Grounds, where Team BoBoiBoy "will fight to prove whether they deserve their powers - or not". Insert epic fighting.

BoBoiBoy and Fang combine attacks, using a fire golem, a water golem and a shadow golem to finally break through his defenses. Kaizo's mask cracks and he flies into a wall of his ship. Despite appearing tattered and beaten, he lands on his feet, and with a snap of his fingers, all three golems collapse. Kaizo predicted that such an attack would sap them of their strength. Despite their exhaustion, they seem poised to fight again. Then Kaizo says that wouldn't be necessary, and admits that they've proven themselves worthy of their powers, as finding worthy wielders for the powers was their mission all along. When Lahap reminds that they were going to give the power bands to their own teammates, Kaizo invites Team BoBoiBoy to join his team for a grander mission. They're later seen having returned to Earth after denying the invitation, pondering Kaizo's warning that others will find them too, so they better prepare. Fang is allowed by his captain to stay with his friends. TAMAT

Can he think on his feet? Is he magnificent?

He's a very agile fighter, going toe to toe with BBB's swifter elementals to the extent of shattering their Elemental Weapons (which doesn't happen often). He's got swordsmanship, strategy and keeps a cool head through and through, even when fighting multiple opponents at once, sidestepping or blocking their attacks with a smirk. Despite his arrogant demeanor, he's always a step ahead of everyone, he can even deduce when his own brother's out to "betray" him. In the midst of battle, he casually compliments BBB's fighting resolve and even encourages his opponents, wanting more of the thrill of battle. He's practically laughing with joy at the peak of the fight, saying he's been waiting for a battle like this.

note The sequel series has the heroes joining Kaizo's grander mission on their own; saving Power Spheras from abuse by evil aliens. Kaizo reappears when Fang fetches him to help them fight one such foe, the massive Jugglenaut, and his fighting ability is still just as ruthless though more focused, regardless of his upgrade. He's also seen on an undercover mission on a Space Pirate base, and he's capable of flipping between his serious stone-cold demeanor to the jovial persona of the pirate janitor "Kassim". The results are hilarious, but he finds it less than funny. Despite the comedy, it adds Master of Disguise to his skills. So far he's never been outsmarted.

Regarding his personality in Galaxy, he's less of the sarcastic sadist and more aloof and serious instead, still just as committed to missions. Kaizo demanding Fang to not interfere with him fighting Jugglenaut all by himself may appear as arrogance - or as a guise to uphold his "Legendary Space Rebel" reputation while not wanting Fang to get hurt, which is made more evident in his concern masked by anger when he does. To put it shortly, he's got a Sugar-and-Ice Personality; the former being subtly unmasked in later installments. Supplementary material, but this message he sent for Fang's birthday gives a good impression of the way that Kaizo cares.

Is he a bastard?

Some of Team BoBoiBoy say a fair amount of conflict could have been avoided had Fang said Kaizo was his brother, but his jerkish behavior may have not helped either way. Some of Kaizo's aforementioned strategy involves manipulating others. He forces Fang to prove his loyalty to him by taking out his human friends, and expresses little sympathy in punishing him, almost lethally, when he disobeys. When Kaizo knows Fang acts to defend his friends from danger, he uses that to his advantage by putting them in threatening situations.

There is the factor of condescension that I was concerned would affect his chances, but Kaizo's case of smug isn't as bad as Ejo Jo's. It's debatable which of the two is crueler, but Kaizo's occasional insults to the heroes such as "weaklings", "brats", "disappointing" and "not worthy" aren't far from what they've heard before; Ejo Jo's degrading was far more gratuitous, not to mention his Evil Laughter, while Kaizo has(/had) a sinister chuckle instead. He drops most of the insults later anyway, but his morality's still pretty shaky, he's not one to shy away from what others would consider cruel, as explained below.

Kaizo believes Violence is the Only Option in the mission of protecting power spheras. Even when he means well, BoBoiBoy and friends disagree with his methods for being too extreme, and he understands. Maybe it was offscreen character development or spending more time with his brother in the Time Skip between the original and Galaxy series, but Kaizo's grown out of his condescending behavior while still being on top of his game. Not more bastard than he is pragmatic, he fake-befriends an Affably Evil Space Pirate mook (as Kassim) who genuinely believed him to be a friend, only for him to outcry his betrayal when Kaizo turns on the pirates, since they were enemies he exploited for the mission.

Possible mitigating issues?

note He wasn't always this cold. He was much happier with his parents, governors of planet Gogobugi, until Bora Ra and his Tengkotak gang attacked to seize their Power Sphera, Enerbot. Kaizo and 2-year-old Fang evacuate with the sphere while their parents' fates are unknown. When Bora Ra catches up with them and hurts Fang, Kaizo uses Enerbot, using his energy powers for the first time, but he indirectly injures Fang and holds his unconscious brother in regret. They are rescued by Maskmana, who fends off Bora Ra long enough for them to escape. Maskmana gives young Kaizo advice against letting his anger control him, and Kaizo starts training. So that's one breakdown - but I'm excusing it since Kaizo was likely just 11 years old.

Regarding an Ambiguous Situation

The competition

More prominent antagonists have arcs of villainy span for more than 3 episodes before they fall. Case in point, Ejo Jo note  and BoBoiBot, who turned out to an Effective Knockoff of the unstable hero even after he turned out to be a Sucksessor, so BoBoiBoy needed time to unlock a new element to defeat him note . Although Kaizo's arc was only 3 episodes, he's the first contestant against Team BoBoiBoy who entirely got what he wanted in the end, even if he wasn't a villain outright.

Final Verdict?

I think he qualifies [tup] This guy confused the hell out of me 5 years ago, the existence of this trope helps explain some things [lol]

The minimum I recommend watching to see this guy in action is the final episode of the original series as given here. Only one with decent English captions tongue and definitely brings out a lot of the Blood Knight, Anti-Hero and other qualities I see him qualifying as MB for.

Since everyone seems to approve of Six, I'm gonna make a write-up for her:

Aliens vs. Predator (2010): Specimen Six is an unusually intelligent Xenomorph who escapes from her captors in Weyland-Yutani before freeing several of her brethren, including the ancient Queen known as the Matriarch. Armed with her wits and strategic prowess, Six cuts through entire swaths of Marines in defense of her hive while bolstering their ranks by harvesting civilians. Making her way to the Yautja ruins, Six single-handedly kills two Young Blood Predators and impregnates one Elite. Although captured once again, Six quickly escapes and molts into a Queen herself, having exacted revenge on her captors and built a new hive to rule over.

Yes to Kaizo, good job on the first EP. Being concise is tough the first go, you got out all the details and that's the important thing. I can forgive the healthy ego and changes in personality throughout appearances given he both ends on a high note and is clearly capable of respecting worthy adversaries and plays his hands quite well.

Good job on the writeup pika, thank you for doing a good job on the length!

Thanks for the nice feedback, I really appreciate it grin. Kaizo was the first guy who popped in my head upon reading about the trope so it had to be done evil grin. I just have a few questions to ask before I hit the sack. Although I can probably answer two of them myself, I'd appreciate hearing back from others.

  1. What subpage would Kaizo's writeup go on? On trope pages, examples for this show go in an "Asian Animation" folder. The work's subpages are indexed in "Other Media". I believe the answer would be to put him in "Other Media" under the asscaps header "Asian Animation".
  2. Should Kaizo's writeup consist of his actions in the series finale as well as the sequel series or not? Only in the former was he an antagonist, but I covered the Galaxy installment as well for good measure. I think the majority of the writeup should be of his bastardry from the series finale with one sentence on how he's still competent in later installments.
  3. This is the question I can't answer myself: regarding (for both MB and CM) discussion dates. I suppose "major upcoming [media]" is what hindered me but there's an upcoming work from the same creators of BoBoiBoy called Mechamato (yet to have a page) and I was wondering if I could place a date for it. Not a specific one due to lots of pandemic delays but currently scheduled to 2022. Would it be fine to make an Other Media folder on that sandbox to put it in? Thank you.

Are you afraid?

He'll go on Other Media and we can make a section for Asian Animation; For the purpose of his writeup just focus on the finale stuff; That's fine, just reserve it and mark "2022" for release date until an exact one is set down.
