Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.

Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.

For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

From the in-progress Echo Rose page I'm making:

  • Brooklyn Rage: Downplayed; Echo is a boisterous New Yorker with self-defensive skills, but at the same time, she's also an empath who strives to help people, despite her rough exterior.

Does this example count?

Edit to avoid double posting:

Would this be better as Occult Detective or Paranormal Investigation?

Once Echo thinks there's a ghost trying to contact her and the Zipper Film's crew, she becomes determined to investigate what happened to this ghost, in order to help her rest in peace. She outright says that this is the sort of thing she does, being an Empath and a Psychic.

From Periphery Hatedom:

  • Shōjo works, especially of the romance variety, tend to get looked down on by fans of Shonen or Seinen (and even Josei) for many of the same reasons "Chick Flicks" get looked down on by fans of more male-oriented films. In a Shonen work, expect a given female fan to either think she lives in a classic Shoujo romance and be subsequently shot down, or hide her like for it out of fear she may be seen as believing cheesy romance cliches. A given Shoujo series might be more forgiven if they embrace more traditionally "shonen" elements like action or downplayed romance.
  • Shōnen series, on the other hand, tends to be viewed by Seinen fans as immature and a sign of a fan's inability to "grow up", especially if they're on the more Idealistic side of the Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism. Some works written for older demographics even show characters subscribing to wildly fanatic beliefs based on what they learned from Shonen (just look at Hiro or the Jovians). It's because of this, when a shonen series is darker than expected or doesn't focus on "orthodox" settings like battle-fantasy or Kid Hero/Ordinary High-School Student adventure, or even embraces wholeheartedly things like down to earth romance, it's commonly thought to be written for a different demographic.
  • The tsundere is probably the most hated of the -dere types. It became so hated in the mid-to-late 2000s when they became increasingly violent and began appearing more. Newer tsundere characters, often generally considered Shana Clones, are also hated by people who prefer 90s tsundere characters such as Asuka Langley Soryu, to the point where there's a Broken Base between "classic tsundere" and "modern tsundere" fans.
  • And beyond any of these, the hate directed at superhero comics from roughly the early 1980s to the mid-2000s by artcomic fans and creators who were convinced that the comics medium would never get artistic respect until superhero comics were DESTROYED FOREVER. It got to the point that Dan Clowes' The Death Ray was given hugely positive reviews by some online critics purely because of how nastily they thought it attacked superhero comics and their fans. (When the comic was reissued a few years later, Clowes himself stated that he didn't hate superhero comics and hadn't intended it particularly aggressively.) It largely died out (apart from a few ageing die-hards) in the mid-2000s when, following the manga boom, artistic graphic novels finally started taking off in the wider bookstore market, with superhero comics still being in existence.

Do these count as general examples? I'm unsure on whether to delete them or not.

Any example speaking about a particular genre as a whole is general.

So the Appeal to Ridicule page lists this as an example

  • Arguments against raising the minimum wage are often along the lines of "You want $10 an hour? Why not make it $100 an hour?" This can be done anytime numbers are involved, and is difficult to unpack in any way other than to call it out as a failed attempt at a Reductio ad Absurdum.

I would think this is more like a Strawman Fallacy, but wanted to ask here instead of just moving it.

If two characters performed a Fusion Dance while holding instruments and the instruments fused with them, would that be Magic Pants?

I would say no, since Magic Pants is pretty explicitly for clothing and only for when the transformation should destroy them which, since I'm betting this is for Steven Universe, is not the case since those fusions have always had things like clothes and possessions merge.

That's what I thought, though in this case I'd like to mention the instruments in question are entirely physical.

Okay, concerning this post, here's the new example I came up with.

  • "The Hand that Rocks the Mabel": Gideon is revealed to have Journal #2, and he's looking for the others

Does it look okay?

This definitely isn't enough context, right? (Not giving the exact page because spoilers, but it's a character page for Steven Universe):

I'd say it's not enough because it doesn't explain HOW it's a side effect.

From Steven Universe: The Movie

  • Memetic Sex God: Steg has quickly grown a reputation like that, with some even joking that "making anyone doubt their sexuality" is part of his powerset. Even Pearl had a rather orgasmic reaction to seeing him. Yes, you read that right, Pearl.

Hasn't this item been cut a while ago?

@Whirl RX: I think that (the Yae Sakura one) can count as a variant of Viewer Species Confusion. It's probably deliberate (?), too.

I need the answer to this, though:

So say, Bob has a Split Personality called "Robert". Robert, while not evil and has similar goals/desires as Bob, is much less inhibited and more ruthless than Bob. If Bob doesn't want to do something because it'll look bad, Robert would do it, and even suggest Bob to go with it.

Would Robert be a Poisonous Friend?

On Characters.Fate Grand Order Extra for Katsushika Hokusai:

  • Men Can't Keep House: Both played straight and gender-inverted. Neither father or daughter is interested in cooking, cleaning, or housework in general, and ignore them completely.

Isn't this just a non-example to say two people, man and woman, can't keep house?

Shipping. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic mentions Pair the Spares examples for fan pairings. But since Pair the Spares isn't a YMMV trope, does it need to happen in the actual work to count?

Speaking of MLP, it was recently (without discussion or approval) used as the page image for Pair the Spares, despite one of the pairings only being Ship Tease and the Spares having no tease, much less relation. Before taking this to Image Pickin' I want to confirm if it requires they be paired in work because the image works if not.

Much of Spell My Name With An S was removed with this edit reason "This trope requires canon inconsistency, not fanon inconsistency." Is that true? I remember the trope being in TRS for this reason, but nothing ever came of that.
