"We all have special powers, we're like a little community!"note

Origins SMP is a private Minecraft server run by Wilbur Soot and TommyInnit. The server is centered around the Origins Mod for Fabric, which allows players to choose an origin as to which their characters will be a descendant from, gaining game-altering mechanics which can either hugely impact one aspect of gameplay, like the Merling origin, or slightly change multiple aspects, like the Kitsune origin. Origins come with multiple pros and cons, and the abilities and drawbacks of each one make for something pretty interesting to watch.

The server was created on the 11th of February 2021, with a majority of its members joining that day. The server started its second season on the 27th of September 2021, complete with a new seed and the new 1.18 world generation. As of the 12th of January 2022, the server was reset again, marking the start of the 3rd season.

Current members of the server include Tommy himself and Beautie as Avians, Wilbur Soot as a Phantom, Ranboo as an Enderian, Philza as an Elytrian, Tubbo as a Bumblebee, Nihachu as a Merling, Jack Manifold as a Blazeborn, Slimecicle as a Slimecician, Sneegsnag as an Inchling, Smajor as a Starborne, Fundy as a Fox, James Marriott as a Feline, and Technoblade as a Rabbit, featuring short visits from Jschlatt playing as Fragrance Man, an Arachnid. See the character page for tropes pertaining to specific characters.

Origins SMP contains examples of:

  • Abnormal Allergy: Multiple members have deadly allergies to day-to day-things that heavily impact their experience and gameplay on the server.
    • Wilbur can't be in contact with sunlight for more than a couple of seconds without burning if he's not in Phantom mode.
    • Both Ranboo and Jack are hydroallergenic and can't come in contact with water or rain without taking huge amounts of damage.
    • Ranboo in particular seems to be a sufferer of this trope, for as well as being hydroallergenic, he is also allergic to pumpkins. He is physically unable to consume anything with pumpkin in it, such as pumpkin pie, and cannot wear carved pumpkins on his head. Ridiculously, he can't even see other people wearing a carved pumpkin, allowing for someone wearing one to appear completely invisible to him.
  • Aerith and Bob: Comes with the territory of online nicknames. Compare Tommy, Phil and Jack to Ranboo, Tubbo and Fundy.
  • Alien Landmass: The gigantic, ring-shaped ravine carved into the ground around the central lake. Nobody knows how it got there or what it means, but it apparently goes right through bedrock and is not something that can naturally generate in Minecraft.
  • Apparently Human Merfolk: The Merling origin, held by Niki. She can swim faster, see and breathe underwater, mine faster underwater, and she doesn't sink, but she can't breathe on land.
  • Bee People: Tubbo's origin, the Bee. He can float around, he gets regeneration and saturation near flowers, and he inflicts poison on people he hits, but he can't eat food, he has 3 fewer hearts, and he gets Hunger, Weakness, and Slowness at night or in the rain. He also has a button to instantly kill himself.
  • Bird People: The Avian origin, held by Tommy. He has permanent Slow Falling and runs faster on land, but he can only eat plant-based foods and he has to sleep at a high Y-level. Also applies to Beautie and Freddy.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: The Enderian origin, held by Ranboo. He has endless ender pearls and has longer reach due to long limbs, but she's hydroallergenic, and anyone who wears a pumpkin cannot be seen by him.
  • Celestial Body: The Starborne origin, held by Smajor and Sparklez. They have the ability to launch themselves through the air, fire a laser that deals 3 hearts of damage, and have a number of status effects when outside at night. They also take double fire damage, take more damage when not outside at night, have a chance to get Blindness and Slowness X for 6 seconds any time they take damage, and explode upon death (done by automatically summoning a charged creeper that instantly explodes).
  • Corporate-Sponsored Superhero: Philza is shaping up to become one, taking on the moniker of "Crow Father" after being hired by Innit Incorporated to serve as a superhero for Mortlake.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Tommy has quickly become one, founding Innit Incorporated and having Ranboo create false incidents of crime in order to convince Phil to agree to become a superhero backed by his company.
  • Cunning Like a Fox: Before the rebalancing of the Fox origin, Fundy decided to build a cave filled with chests and barrels of stolen items. Though he was quickly caught, this has transferred over to his new origin through its style of combat, being a Fragile Speedster and ambush specialist, but still being fragile enough that many people can often one- or two-hit him.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Both Wilbur and Tommy had this reaction upon seeing Techno's rabbit-themed outfit for the first time.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Several people's Origins were altered to make the game more balanced, or to cater to the wishes of the individual players.
    • During the first few streams, Tubbo played as a Shulk, an Origin that gives him a bunch of armor buffs and extra inventory slots, with the downsides being increased appetite and an inability to use a shield. However, he wanted an origin that catered better to his interest, and switched to the Bumblebee.
    • The Starborne Origin originally included the ability to summon lightning by punching people. However, lightning strikes destroy items, meaning if someone is killed by lightning, their stuff gets erased. After Scott accidentally wiped Tubbo's inventory twice in a row, this ability was removed, replaced with the shooting star projectile.
    • The Fox/Kitsune Origin was pretty much entirely overhauled, as many of its features were either underwhelming or just straight up broken.note  invoked
  • Epic Fail: Like Philza, who had surfed the void days earlier, Fundy found the holes into the bedrock floor of the world, and decided to drop down into the void and use his Pounce to jump back out. Unfortunately, Fundy's Pounce is based on his velocity, meaning that, when falling, he cannot use Pounce to go up. Meaning that he can't jump out of the void. Meaning that he dies, with all of his stuff on him, by falling into the void, where you have no chance of regaining your items.
  • Fantastic Racism: Played for Laughs. Tommy apparently hates short people, specifically having enmity with Slimecicle, and ordering Crow Father not to help any short people on the server.
  • Friendly Ghost: Wilbur's origin, the Phantom, makes him transparent and able to enter a phantom form, which turns him intangible and fully invisible at the cost of hunger. Being Wilbur, he's also quite amicable towards the other members of the server. Also applies to Shubble.
  • Harmless Villain: Ranboo and Tubbo tried (keyword, tried) to be the villains during Season 1. Despite saying that they were going to be the "bad guys", the only things they managed to do was guilt-trip Scott into buying a house, and sell ammo to Fundy. The rest of their time was devoted to arguing with each other over Tubbo wanting to show people their "villain lair", which was mushroom-themed and just about the cutest base on the server.
  • I Have Many Names: Charlie recites his entire list of titles to Wilbur as his sign off for "Real History", which takes up one and a half pages when written down with a book and quill. The full thing reads as: "Commander in queen, gunky boy, goo, green, viscous and soluble, elongatable, malleable, improperly formed, birther, ball, ball boy getcha balls here, tiny sometimes, gblrllblblblblbllrlrlbll, gunky funky chunky man of many facets and reputable assets taking the world one gunk at a time, looking for a hole to settle down in, slimecicle."
  • Invisibility: Bek's origin, the Chameleon, can turn invisible by crouching. Unlike in-game invisibility potions or the Phantom origin while in phantom form, Chameleons' armour and the items they're holding would turn invisible with them as well.
  • Jack of All Trades: The design philosophy behind the Fox/Kitsune origin. It has a large amount of smaller features and buffs, such as running faster, jumping higher, taking no fall damage, and getting some unique minor abilities, with a smaller amount of larger weaknesses.
  • Lilliputians:
    • Sneeg's origin, the Inchling. He's half a block tall and only has 5 hearts, but he's incredibly hard to hit, and is just as fast as a human and can climb any block, allowing him to have an expansive tunnel system between bases to prank people and easily get between areas.
    • Bek's origin, the Chameleon; she's only a block tall and also only has 5 hearts.
  • Little Bit Beastly:
    • Fundy's origin, the Fox/Kitsune. He's more mobile than other origins, he ignores falling damage, he can see in the dark, he has a pounce ability that doubled the damage of critical strikes, effectively tripling the damage of a strike, he has the Shulk origin's special storage, and he can turn invisible after standing still for a time. On the flip side, however, he's smaller than most other members of the server, thereby having 4 fewer hearts, and needs a lot more food to stay satiated.
    • Also Technoblade, with the Bunny origin. Though he hasn't actually revealed the details of the Origins ability list, he can jump similar to Fundy and he seems to be restricted to eating carrots.
  • Mood Whiplash: After Tommy killed the tiny slime that Charlie claimed he "gave birth to", some of the server members held a memorial service for the slime. Wilbur did a reading of Charlie's history book before inviting him to give a speech.
Wilbur: Charlie, if you'd like to take the floor.
    Niki: That was so beautiful.
Charlie: (sniffs) Yeah, lemme just... Sorry, I gotta collect myself here. As you all know… WHERE THE FUCK IS SNEEG.
  • Mythology Gag: Multiple to the Dream SMP, as expected, since a majority of the whitelisted members are also on that server.
    • Wilbur picked his Phantom origin in reference to the character of Ghostbur.
    • Jack naturally spawning from the Nether and having to escape it, as pointed out by Jack himself, was an unintentional reference to his character on the Dream SMP dragging himself out of Hell.
    • When asked, Tubbo and Ranboo confirmed that their marriage on the other server carried over to this one as well.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Jack Manifold is a Blazeborn, meaning that he's immune to fire damage and actually doubles his damage when he's on fire, along with being immune to poison and hunger, but he's hydroallergenic like Ranboo and his natural spawn is in the Nether.
  • Shout-Out: When Techno chases Phil and Sneeg around for golden carrots, he compares his own behaviour to either Tantalus' post-mortem punishmentnote  or Atalanta's last foot-racenote .
Techno: I'm pretty sure there's a Greek myth that's basically this with apples.
  • Slime Girl: A Spear Counterpart in Slimecicle, who has the Slime origin, which makes him jump higher, treat every block as though it were a slime block and shrink to half size instead of dying (down to the size of Sneeg before he dies), but he exhausts quicker.
  • Token Human: Technoblade, initially, specifically stating that he would not have a Piglin origin due to its lack of actual uniqueness, and stated interest at playing as a Wither- or Ravager-based origin. Eventually subverted as he selects the Hare/Rabbit origin.
  • Unreveal Angle: Employed by Wilbur whilst reading the "Do Not Read" book Ranboo keeps in his house.note
  • Winged Humanoid: The Elytrian origin, held by Philza. He has an elytra that is always on and doesn't take up his chest area, he can launch himself 20 blocks into the air, and he deals double damage when using an elytra, but he can only wear light armor, he takes double kinetic damage, and he gains a stacking debuff when under a low ceiling.
