Mythology Gag / Dragon Ball FighterZ

Go To

Since Dragon Ball FighterZ is a fighting game based on the franchise, it makes sense that it contains plenty of references. A number of which are showcased in this video.

    open/close all folders
    Movesets
  • Several characters have moves (usually normal attacks) borrowed from older fighting games; for example, Trunks has his slide kick from the Super Butoden games, while Cell has his Rolling Attack from the arcade game Dragon Ball Z 2. Beerus, Hit, and Goku Black, in particular, borrow a few move animations from Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2; this makes a good deal of sense for the latter two since that was their first fully fleshed-out video game appearance.
  • Master Roshi:
    • He has the Evil Containment Wave as a Super Attack. In his reveal trailer, he uses it on Piccolo as Master Mutaito did to Demon King Piccolo.
    • His Special Moves include the Sleepy Boy Technique and Thunder Shock Surprise, two moves that he first used in his Jackie Chun persona against Goku.
    • His 5M/Standing Medium references the Drunken Master technique he also used as Jackie Chun.
  • Yamcha:
    • One of his special moves is the Spirit Ball / Sokidan, a move he used once during the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, and in the non-canon film Tree of Might.
    • And of course, he has his classic Wolf Fang Fist / Rōgafūfūken. His Level 3 Super’s beginning animation (when he shouts the attack name) and ending animation (when he stretches his arms to his sides) is referenced from his fight against Goku in Path to Power.
  • Krillin:
    • One of his moves is him throwing a rock at his opponent, which is most likely a reference to that one time he threw a rock at Goku, as well as when he threw a fake rock off a cliff to win at Roshi's stone retrieval challenge early in his training with him.
    • His use of the heavy Afterimage Technique (one fake Krillin dashes towards the opponent while another, tangible Krillin kicks the opponent from above) is something he did when he fought General Blue.
    • His double ki blast (which can be aimed up) is something he did when he fought Piccolo at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai.
    • His ultimate move is to use the splitting ki attack he used to finish off the Saibamen, with his expression taken straight from the manga.
  • Tenshinhan:
    • When he deflects an attack, he joins his hands and shouts a kiai like when he returned Yamcha's Kamehameha to him.
    • He has a Meteor Attack in which Chiaotzu flies towards the enemy, grabs their back and blows himself up. Just like he tried against Nappa. Tien even screams his name in sorrow afterwards.
    • One of his moves is the Volleyball Play, an absurdly flamboyant move that was featured exactly once when he fought Kid Goku in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai.
    • Another move is the Tri-Beam, which can be fired multiple times like when he tried to fend back Semi-Perfect Cell.
  • Goku (Base, Super Saiyan and Blue):
    • Base Goku's moveset, namely the use of the Kaioken as a Last Stand mechanic, is an interesting example, as during the Saiyan and Namek arc, Goku would show up when the situation was at its most dire to save the day. By being the last character on the team, Goku serves this role gameplay-wise.
    • He Kaioken x20 attack is a series of intense rushdowns, followed by a near-up-close Kamehameha. When fighting Frieza on Namek, Goku's last use of the Kaioken in Z was the exact same series of attacks.
    • He uses Super Saiyan 3 in only one instance, the Meteor Attack in his stock Super Saiyan form. This may be a reference to the powerful but impractical nature of Super Saiyan 3 due to its rapid ki drain.
  • Piccolo:
    • Instead of a ki attack, Piccolo instead stretches his arm across the stage, a move he only used against Teen Goku in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai.
    • One of his special moves is the Makankosappo, or Special Beam Cannon, the move he used to kill Raditz and Goku.
    • Another is creating a cluster of ki balls around the enemy which then fly at them, a move he used on Form 2 Frieza and Android 17.
  • Vegeta (all forms):
    • Base Vegeta's Meteor Attack is the Galaxy Breaker, the same move that he used to kill a paralyzed Nappa after deeming him useless.
    • In addition, one of his attacks is a Command Grab where he picks the enemy off the ground and throws them into the sky. The attack itself is the same grab Vegeta used to set up the Galaxy Breaker he used on Nappa, even featuring a small cutscene of Vegeta looking down on his enemy.
    • Base Vegeta’s auto-combo also includes him pointing his fingers at his opponent and blowing them up, the exact method in which he killed Cui on Namek, and in the same pose no less.
    • If you use Final Flash as a finishing move, the camera may cut to an orbital view of the planet with the attack rocketing off into space. While this happens for any character with a similar move, using Final Flash in this manner will directly reference the manga/anime.
  • Nappa:
    • He can plant in Saibamen to help in battle, referencing the opening of the fight against him in the Saiyan Arc.
    • Another move is to rotate his hand with his middle and index fingers outstretched while the ground explodes. This is the same move he used to destroy East City when he and Vegeta first arrived on Earth.
    • His Meteor Attack is to fire his ultimate attack, a ki blast coming from his mouth, which he attempted to use against Goku.
  • Captain Ginyu:
    • Holding Light, Medium, or Heavy Attack while charging Ginyu's Body Change will cause him to damage himself before firing, as a reference to him doing the same before Body Changing with Goku on Namek.
  • Frieza:
    • One of his moves shows him telekinetically lifting the opponent and then blowing them up, just like what he subjected Krillin to on Namek.
    • His Kienzan-esque attack is expected as it's a classic move, but a unique quirk is that after flying off-screen, they'll come back and potentially hurt the player if they aren't careful, just like on Namek. He can follow the attack up into an upward diagonal ki blast, similar to his last-ditch attempt to kill Goku at the climax of the Namek Saga.
    • His Golden Form has a time limit that, when exceeded, reverts him back to his previous form, not unlike what happens in Resurrection 'F'. Also from the film, when his transformation ends, Frieza can command Sorbet to fire a laser at his opponent, causing them to collapse to the ground if it lands.
    • His wake-up Meteor Attack is the desperation attack he used to try and kill Goku on Namek, which has been called "You Must Die By My Hand!" and Last Emperor in other games (Budokai Tenkaichi and Xenoverse 2, respectively).
    • His Nova Strike is a dive attack, just like during his battle with Goku on Namek where he charged it directly into the Kamehameha.
    • His Death Ball super has him pose exactly as he did when he used the move on Goku out of delirium in the first half of their fight on Namek.
    • Several of his attacks have him kick whilst having his arms folded, referencing a moment where he did so against Goku to show off.
    • Another attack of his is telekinetically lifting rocks and throwing them at his opponent, which he did early into his fight with Goku.
  • Future Trunks:
    • His Meteor attack is to throw his oppenent into the sky and fire a ki beam at them, which is how he defeated Future Cell in his timeline after returning to it post-Cell Games.
    • Come Season 4, his Burning Attack super can be followed up with his Shining Sword Attack for an extra bar of meter. In execution, it’s almost exactly like how he killed Frieza.
    • His Change The Future special is the move he used to kill future Android 18 with after returning from the past.
    • His auto-combo has him slicing through his opponent before they explode behind him. The camera positioning is identical to when he nearly did the same to Android 14, who had a few seconds to run at Trunks before his cleaving kicked in.
  • Cooler:
    • Several of his moves allow him to No-Sell energy attacks, and even some energy blast Supers by moving through them and hitting the enemy. In his debut movie, one of Cooler's most impressive moments was flying right through a Kamehameha powered by Goku's Kaioken x20 and attacking him.
  • Android 17:
    • End Game is a more dramatic version of him killing Dr. Gero after being released from his pod. It even ends with him stomping on the enemy as if he was crushing his head.
    • Barrier Explosion is the attack he used to destroy Anilaza's main power source in the Tournament of Power, complete with a dramatic recreation of his barrier-powered punch.
    • Super Electric Strike was created for Dragon Ball Xenoverse in order to give 17 a unique Ultimate Attack; Super Dragon Ball Heroes cemented its status as his signature move by giving it to Park Ranger 17.
  • Android 18:
    • Budokai 3 was the first game to name 17 and 18's Combination Attack from The History of Trunks Accel Dance. In said game, Krillin would also take 17's place if 18 initiates the attack while wearing her Buu Saga attire. In FighterZ said move is used as 18's second special, and just like in Budokai 3, if Krillin is on the team, she'll replace 17 with him.
    • She has a Super Attack where she fires a powerful ki blast into the ground, similar to how she and 17 kill Gohan in Future Trunks' native timeline.
    • One of her moves has 17 come out and give a speech, warning the other player not to have anyone interfere with the one-on-one match between 18 and her opponent, much like their debut during 18's fight against Vegeta. And should the opponent call any of their assists for backup, 17 will blow them up on the spot.
  • Android 16:
    • One of his specials is him grabbing the opponent and self-destructing. This is just like what he tried to do against Perfect Cell in the Cell Games, only this time he actually succeeds in detonating it.
    • One of his ranged attacks is firing his fist like a rocket, which he used against Cell.
    • As expected, his ultimate special is Hell's Flash, where he removes his hands and fires incredibly powerful blasts from his arms.
  • Teen Gohan:
    • If Gohan is on the same team as Goku, his father will appear to help in his one-handed Kamehameha Meteor Attack, just like at the very end of his fight with Cell when Goku helps Gohan from the afterlife. Even when being fired at full power, it is still one-handed as a reference to Cell breaking his other arm. This sequence of events is also used in the Dramatic Finish on Cell on the Wasteland stage.
  • Cell:
    • Like Frieza, Cell will telekinetically lift his opponent in the air. Instead of making them explode, however, he slices them up several times. This is how he made the arena for the Cell Games.
    • One of his melee attacks is to wrap his arms around his opponents and crush them, just like he did to Gohan to try and get his hidden power to come out.
  • Adult Gohan:
  • Videl:
    • One of Videl's supers involves Great Saiyaman appearing, going Super Saiyan, and then firing a Kamehameha at the opponent. This is based on when Gohan goes Super Saiyan when watching Videl's beatdown at the hands of Spopovich during the early Buu Saga.
    • While Videl can fly due to Gohan's teachings, she's one of the only characters in the game who doesn't use ki attacks, as she never learnt how to use them during her time as a fighter.
    • One of Videl's moves involves her dodging an attack to allow Adult Gohan, as Great Saiyaman, to come in and punch the opponent to the ground. After this, Gohan performs the entire Super Sentai Stance routine from when he busted the criminals on the highway, complete with the exact same "durrrrr" bell sound from the anime. Videl, of course, makes a remark of how disappointed and embarrassed she is over it.
  • Majin Buu:
    • One of his moves has him Neck Lift the opponent and punch them in the head in the exact same fashion as he did when he killed Babidi.
    • Another move of his is to turn his opponents into chocolate, which he did to Dabura. Notably, every character has a unique cookie form, including DLC characters.
    • His Fat Toss and special where he sits on and pummels his opponent’s face in come from his beatdown of Vegeta and Shin after being revived.
  • Gotenks:
    • When he uses his Spiking Buu Ball Slam, if Piccolo is on the team will help set up the spike. He even comments on how it wasn't really necessary for him to do that afterwards.
  • Kid Buu:
    • If he eats the enemy-turned-into-candy, the pose and his facial expression before he spits it out is taken from the scene where he spat Good Buu out.
    • At the end of his Planet Burst animation, he regenerates himself due to blowing himself up, a nod to how he blew up Earth and survived because of his Healing Factor.
    • His Pearl Flash is a Super Attack that is a mid-air dive attack. The attack is a reference to the scene where Kid Buu beheaded Good Buu.
    • The Human Extinction Attack is actually a technique used by Super Buu. Kid Buu did use it in Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, the first game released as a Dragon Ball game in the West.
    • Preceding his Meteor attack, he shouts at his opponent to damage them, referencing how Super Buu shouted to escape the Room of Spirit and Time when fighting Gotenks.
  • Janemba:
    • His famous dimensional teleport exists as one of his special moves. His other special moves include Hell Gate and Dimensional Hole, two attacks that he used against Super Saiyan 3 Goku.
    • One of his Super Attacks is the stone pillar attack that he attempted to use on Veku.
    • His Meteor Attack is the needle attack that he used against Goku and Vegeta before they fused.
  • Beerus:
    • If he defeats Goku Black or Fused Zamasu with his Meteor Attack, instead of a forehead flick Beerus will instead destroy them the same way he did present Zamasu in the anime.
  • Goku Blue / Vegeta Blue:
  • Fused Zamasu:
    • During his clash sequence, he'll make the same pose as his manga counterpart's Establishing Shot (chapter 22), with his leg raised as a slight change.
  • Hit:
    • His Meteor Attack is a recreation of the beatdown he gives Goku during their tournament match in Super after Hit improves his Time Skip, from striking a stance in the beginning to delivering a flurry of blows to turning his back on the opponent as the opponent goes down.
  • Vegito:
    • One of his Super Attacks is Spirit Excalibur, which originated in Dragon Ball Heroes as Super Saiyan 3 Vegito's finishing move.
    • His level three is the Final Kamehameha. Specifically, it's taken from his first official usage of it (at least named use) from the fight with Fused Zamasu.
  • Jiren:
    • Almost all of his attacks come from his fights with Goku, Hit, Vegeta, Frieza, and Android 17 from the Tournament of Power.
  • Kid Goku (GT):
    • One of his moves is to propel himself with a Kamehameha and headbash into his opponent, which is how he defeated Demon King Piccolo. It also references him using his feet to propel himself into the air when fighting Piccolo Jr. in the following story arc.
    • His Kamehameha has him turn into either Super Saiyan 1 or 3, which he did throughout GT up until his last fight with Baby before unlocking Super Saiyan 4.
    • He also attacks with his Nyoi-bo/Power Pole, something associated heavily with him in his younger Dragon Ball days.
    • His regular Meteor Attack, Dragon Fist Explosion:
      • Regularly it has him pierce through the opponent with the Dragon Fist - itself being also a reference to how he killed Demon King Piccolo - before finishing off with a Kamehameha, much like how he killed Super 17.
      • If an ally has been defeated, a second variation plays out where he turns Super Saiyan 4 and delivers the attack much like against Hirudegarn in the movie Wrath of the Dragon - a tradition which GT itself is responsible for starting.
  • Super Baby 2:
    • His basic Special Moves include Reverse Shot, an attack that he used against Super Saiyan 4 Goku, and Revenge Final Flash, an attack that he used during his battle with Uub.
    • He has a unique move where he infects a defeated opponent and can use their assists, referencing his parasitic infection ability in the anime. In his reveal trailer, he uses it with Adult Gohan, who was one of his first and most prominent infectees.
    • One of his Meteor Attacks is his memorable Revenge Death Ball that he used several times against Goku and Uub. The other is to turn into a Golden Great Ape, just as he did during his last fight against Goku, and either pummel the opponent or blast them with a Super Galick Gun.
  • Gogeta Blue:
    • His first ranged super is the Big Bang Kamehameha, an attack that originated from his GT Super Saiyan 4 counterpart.
    • His melee super and grab is the Counter-Attack he applies to Movie!Broly when both are fighting in their regular Super Saiyan forms.
    • His Aerial Super is the Stardust Fall, which he uses against Broly in the movie when both are Super Saiyans.
    • His second ranged super is the God Punisher barrage he fired at Broly after evading the latter's mouth blast. Spending an extra bar results in him finishing the super with the Stardust Breaker, his signature move from the Janemba movie.
    • He's able to perform both the Kamehameha and Galick Gun as a regular move, the latter being exclusive to when he's airborne.
    • Another of his special moves is the Multi-Form technique, in which one or none of the clones can fire a Kamehameha or Galick Gun while the rest act as feints - a prank move his Super Saiyan 4 counterpart did on Omega Shenron.
    • His counter and teleport attacks are the Punisher Drive combo he used on Janemba in his original movie.
    • His Level 3 attack is the Meteor Explosion combo attack from the Broly movie. And much like in the source material, spending an extra two bars has him finish the move with an Ultimate Kamehameha.
  • Kefla:
    • Her Level 3 attack is the same dual wave move she used to try and defeat Ultra Instinct Goku during the Tournament of Power. One of her possible quotes when using the move is "It's game over! I win!" which is what she said in Dragon Ball Super right before firing off the blasts.
  • Ultra Instinct Goku:
    • While most of his moves are inspired by battles in which Goku used Ultra Instinct (both the Sign and perfected versions), he has a few that come from different sources. For example, he can surround the opponent with ki balls and then blast him as he did to Roasie, and he has the double energy ball move Goku is seen practicing in Super's first opening (dubbed the Dancing Twin Dragon Blast by Dragon Ball Heroes).
    • Referencing Ultra Instinct's nature as reflexively evading the enemy, UI Goku has multiple Counter Attacks, including one where he uses a charging Kamehameha to "rail grind" an enemy beam and blast them, just like he did to defeat Kefla (which also appears in Blue Goku and Kefla's Dramatic Finish).
    • Additionally, UI Goku can No-Sell low-level Ki blasts simply by walking through them as he did in the Tournament of Power.
  • SS4 Gogeta:
    • His Lightning Hammer combination, the finishing chop blow of his auto-combo, and the Ultimate Impact's Zanzouken segment all reference moves originally done by Super Saiyan 4 Goku.
    • His other moves take several references from all of his game appearances since his debut in Budokai 3.
    • The Ultra Big Bang Kamehameha's charging effects are based on its depiction from Dragon Ball Heroes.
    • The effect on his eyes and expression when performing the Big Bang Kamehameha, as well as his charging of the Ultimate Kamehameha in the Dramatic Finish against Gogeta Blue are taken from the latter's appearance in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
    • Gogeta has a move that grants a Dragon Ball every time it is executed. The order in which you get the balls corresponds to the order in which the Shadow Dragons were killed during Dragon Ball GT.
    • Instead of having a regular beam attack, he has the Bluff Kamehameha he used against Omega Shenron.
    • His x100 Big Bang Kamehameha inflicts 199800 damage. The Dragon Ball manga was first published in North America in 1998.
      • In order to execute it, Gogeta has to successfully taunt his foes 7 times - referencing his attitude and time taken to use the attack's regular variant during the fight against Omega Shenron in GT.

    Alternate Colors
Some of the alternate colors may be a reference to other characters and costumes. In particular, every character's Color 2 is an explicit reference to a different costume they've worn or to a related character:
  • Base form Goku's Color 2 is based off the colors of his dogi worn at the cover of Volume 27 of the Dragon Ball Z manga.
  • Master Roshi's Color 2 is the colors of his more well-known outfit. He also has a Color 9 that copies the colors of the Turtle School gi and a Color 12 based on Jackie Chun's outfit.
  • Yamcha's Color 2 is based on his baseball uniform from early DBZ filler and the Super episode.
  • Krillin's Color 2 is based off the Chinese shirt he wears early in Super.
  • Tien's Color 2 has the Red and Green colors of Dragon Ball and Z, which first appeared when he was under the Crane Hermit.
  • Piccolo's Color 2 has the same color as Demon King Piccolo's clothing from Dragon Ball, minus the "ma" symbol on the front.
  • Nappa's Color 2 gives him the colors in his first anime appearance, the incorrect black and brown, which also resembles Raditz's battle armor.
  • Vegeta's Color 2 (in Base form, Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan Blue) is based off his first appearance in the anime, where he had burgundy hair and armour that was green and orange.
  • Ginyu's Color 2 has the same colors as the Namekian frog he body-swapped with.
  • Frieza's Color 2 is based on his ancestor Chilled from Episode of Bardock and he has another palette that resembles his son Kuriza from Toriyama's gag manga Neko Majin Z.
  • Bardock's Color 2 is based off the Saiyan armor worn by his wife Gine (specifically, the coloration it was given in Extreme Butoden and Fusions); he also has color schemes that give his armor the colors of the suits worn by his former comrades (Tora, Borgos, Shugesh, and Fasha; Colors 2, 3, 4, and 8 respectively) and his sons, Goku and Raditz (Colors 9 and 10).
  • Goku's Color 2 (in both Super Saiyan and Blue) is based off the gi he wore at the start of the original Dragon Ball anime and a red and black outfit that greatly resembles the color scheme of the original anime adaptation.
  • Cooler's Color 2 gives him the same colors as his brother Frieza. There's another color that gives him gold skin, seemingly referring to how Super Dragon Ball Heroes had him achieve the same Golden Super Mode as Frieza.
  • Future Trunks' Color 2 is based on the green sweater he wore during Super.
  • Android 17's Color 2 is based on the outfit he wore during the Android Saga (inverting the situation with his DBZ counterpart, listed below).
  • Android 18's Color 2 is based off her civilian clothing from Dragon Ball Super, and she has another set resembling Bulma's spacesuit from the Frieza Saga.
  • Android 16's Color 2 is inspired by the dark blues of Android 8 from Dragon Ball.
  • Cell's Color 2 is taken from the Cell Jrs. His purple scheme makes him resemble Genome, the Android Berserker character from Dragon Ball Heroes, while his red scheme resembles Genome's "God Perfect" form (his equivalent to Super Saiyan God). Another colour option heavily resembles one of Toriyama's art pieces for him, using a darker green and swapping the yellows for orange.
  • Broly's Color 2 is based on his father, Paragus. He also has a scheme that uses the colors of Goku's dogi, making him resemble Karoly, the Goku/Broly fusion from Dragon Ball: Fusions.
  • Teen Gohan's Color 2 is based off the outfit he wore during the Saiyan and Frieza Sagas (or alternately, the purple and red gi he wore early in the Buu Saga).
  • Videl's Color 2 is based on the outfit she wore after her battle with Spopovich, minus the word "FIGHT" on her shirt.
  • Majin Buu's Color 2 makes him resemble Evil Buu.
  • Gotenks' Color 2 is inspired by Xeno Gotenks from Dragon Ball Heroes.
  • Adult Gohan's Color 2 gives him the same color scheme as Teen Gohan during the Cell Games, with a white undershirt referencing the Piccolo-style shoulder pads and cape.
  • Kid Buu's Color 2 gives him colors resembling his reincarnation Uub as he appeared in GT.
  • Janemba's Color 2 is based on his pre-transformation form.
  • Beerus's Color 2 is based off Whis' clothing, while his other alternate colors make reference to the other Gods of Destruction.
  • Hit's Color 2 is based off Auta Magetta, another fighter from Universe 6.
  • Goku Black's Color 2 resembles Future Trunks' clothing from Super.
  • Fused Zamasu's Color 2 is based on the Zen'o.
  • Vegito's Color 2 copies Fused Zamasu's color scheme - the character that this version of Vegito (Blue) fought.
  • Android 21's Color 2 resembles Dr. Gero (Android 20)'s clothing.
  • Jiren's Color 2 is based on Vermoud, his universe's God of Destruction.
  • Kefla's Color 2 resembles Kibito Kai, another Potara fusion.
  • Ultra Instinct Goku's Color 2 resembles the gi he wore during the last arc of the original manga and Z, and his Color 7 resembles the purple gi from the original Dragon Ball.
  • Gogeta's Color 2 (in both Super Saiyan Blue and Super Saiyan 4) copies Vegito's color scheme.
  • Like his Z counterpart, DBS Broly's Color 2 is based on his own version of Paragus.
  • GT Goku's Color 2 has the coloration of his orange gi, and like with Ultra Instinct, his purple gi is his Color 7.
  • Super Baby 2's Color 2 copies the colors of Vegeta's normal outfit from GT.
  • This also extends to support characters: like Tien, Chiaotzu gets an outfit based off his original appearance, Android 17 gets colors based off of his park ranger outfit from Super, and Zamasu gets the same colors as Shin, the Eastern Supreme Kai from Universe 7. If the long-haired Videl is selected, Adult Gohan will have his Saiyaman helmet on, and if Colour 2 is selected for either costumes, he dons the color scheme of Great Saiyaman 2.

    Character Interactions
Depending on the starting characters on each team and the arena, cutscenes will play that harken back to key scenes from the series. Depending on who wins afterwards, a "Dramatic Finish" will play that does the same:
  • Goku vs. Frieza on Planet Namek: Frieza kills Krillin, triggering Goku's transformation into a Super Saiyan. If Goku wins on Destroyed Namek, he'll fly away. An enraged Frieza will attempt to kill Goku with a final last-ditch attack, which Goku counters, killing Frieza. Following the manga, Goku will then look upon the crater resentfully.
  • Teen Gohan vs. Cell at the Cell Games Arena: Cell crushes Android 16's head underfoot, triggering Gohan's ascension into a Super Saiyan 2. In a combination of the two beam-struggles between Cell and Teen Gohan in Z, if Gohan wins on Wasteland, Cell will become desperate and fires a full power Kamehameha. Goku then tells Gohan telepathically to show him their power and he'll fire the Father-Son Kamehameha that obliterates Cell.
  • Goku vs. Kid Buu in the Land of the Kais: If Goku wins, he will throw a Spirit Bomb at Buu and then detonate it, destroying Buu before wishing him to come back as a good person in the next life.
  • Goku vs. Beerus in Space: Following the climax of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, if Beerus wins, he will hurl a Sphere of Destruction at Goku while the latter is falling unconscious to Earth. The call of his friends awaken him and enable his Super Saiyan God powers one last time, allowing him to destroy the Sphere of Destruction before resuming to unconsciously fall, at which point Beerus grabs him by his arm and remarks he's "a fascinating fellow".
  • Trunks vs. Frieza in Rocky Field (Noon): If Trunks wins, he will kill Frieza much like how he killed him when he returned to the Earth as Mecha-Frieza.
  • Yamcha vs. Nappa in Rocky Field (Noon): If Nappa wins, Yamcha's infamous Saibaman hug will be reenacted before Nappa remarks how pathetic he is for not managing to overpower even one Saibaman. If Yamcha wins, however, he blasts the Saibaman back at Nappa, causing the latter to re-enact the pose.
  • Krillin vs. Nappa in Rocky Field (Noon): Cutscene intro of the fight features Krillin using Scattering Bullet against Nappa and his Saibamen like in the Saiyan Saga, but with only Nappa dodging the blast.
  • Goku vs. Broly in Space: If Goku wins, he'll perform the "miracle punch" used to defeat Broly in the first movie.
  • Adult Gohan vs. Broly in the Wasteland: If Gohan wins, he, Goten and Goku show up and perform the Family Kamehameha to kill Broly, Broly's last words being "KAAAAAAAAKAAAAAROOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!"
  • Bardock vs. Frieza in Space: If Frieza wins, he'll kill Bardock with a Supernova just like he did when he blew up Planet Vegeta. If Bardock wins, Frieza attempts the same trick, but Bardock destroys it, turns Super Saiyan as he did in Episode of Bardock, and blasts Frieza away with a ball of energy that explodes, killing the space tyrant.
  • Trunks vs. Fused Zamasu in West City (Destroyed): If Trunks wins, he evades Zamasu's attacks and uses the "Spirit Bomb Sword" to cut him in half while saying that humanity won't lose to someone who thinks only of himself. This is a recreation of the end of the Future Trunks Saga from Super, except that it lacks the part where Zamasu comes back as an Eldritch Abomination.
  • Vegito Blue vs. Fused Zamasu in West City (Destroyed): If Vegito wins, Zamasu delivers his "I am justice! I am the world!" rant as Villainous Breakdown sets in...only for Vegito to shut him up with a punch to the face and finish him off with the Final Kamehameha. This scene is based on their fight from Super, except that Vegito de-fused before he could land a killing blow.
  • Base Goku vs. Base Vegeta in Rocky Field (Noon): If Goku wins, they reenact the first beam struggle in the series, with Vegeta flying into the sky and attempting to blow up the Earth with his Galick Gun, which is countered by Goku's Kaioken Kamehameha. Goku then bumps the Kaioken to times four, overpowering Vegeta and defeating him. Afterwards, Goku stands posing like he did after the fight. All of this is a near-perfect recreation of the moment.
  • Base Goku vs. Frieza on Planet Namek: If Goku wins, he knocks Frieza back, and while Frieza is recovering, charges a Spirit Bomb and throws it at him. Frieza attempts to block it, but he is overpowered by the attack. Afterwards, Goku collapses from fatigue, before looking at the player with a smile, just like how he did when the group thought they had defeated Frieza.
  • Gogeta Blue vs. Janemba in the Land of the Kais: If Gogeta wins, he powers down to normal Super Saiyan and finishes Janemba off with a Stardust Breaker, recreating the climax of their fight in Fusion Reborn. The camera then changes to the POV of the ogre that became Janemba, who awakens and runs away on seeing Gogeta.
  • Gogeta Blue vs. Broly (DBS) on Planet Namek (Destroyed): If Gogeta wins, their climactic battle is recreated with Broly going Super Saiyan and Gogeta preparing to finish him off with a Kamehameha, only for Cheelai to use the Dragon Balls to wish Broly back to Vampa at the last second.
  • Goku Blue vs. Kefla in Space: If Goku wins, a recreation of the climax of their fight in the Tournament of Power plays, where Goku activates Ultra Instinct Sign, then dodges Kefla's energy waves and finishes her off with a Kamehameha.
  • Goku and Frieza vs. Jiren in Space: If Goku wins, the climax of the Tournament of Power is recreated with him and Frieza sending Jiren through the ground and landing in Rocky Field. Goku and Jiren then shake hands and agree to fight again.

    Intros and Outros
  • Intros:
    • Goku's transformation effect in his fight intro resembles his transformation at the end of the first Dragon Ball Z OP.
    • Vegeta's transformation scene perfectly mirrors when he first became a Super Saiyan in the manga.
    • Gohan's SSJ2 transformation is identical to his first one in the anime.
    • Ginyu's intro has him and the Ginyu Force strike their famous poses while their tag partners just stand and stare at them, similar to Frieza's initial reaction to their antics following their introduction. Ginyu also strikes his trademark fighting poses whenever he summons one of his subordinates; for bonus points, one of these is the "Resurrection Fighting Pose" from Super's adaptation of Resurrection 'F'.
    • Goku and Vegeta's transformations into their Super Saiyan Blue forms are lifted from their respective scenes in Resurrection 'F' and its corresponding arc in Dragon Ball Super.
    • Goku Black arrives clad in smoke and transforms into Super Saiyan Rosé in a scene heavily reminiscent of both his initial introduction and his first transformation in the anime.
    • In his Dynamic Entry, Beerus makes the same facial expression he had on the poster for Battle of Gods.
    • Hit's default intro animation faithfully recreates the Time-Skip effect from the Super anime. The scene itself is also ripped right from his interaction with Frost after losing to Vegeta.
    • Base Form Goku's intro has references to the first opening of the Z anime, including entering the stage on the Flying Nimbus, and jumping down in a way that resembles Gohan landing on the Flying Nimbus.
    • Videl's entry pose with Adult Gohan is taken directly from Wrath of the Dragon, where they appeared as Great Saiyaman and Great Saiyawoman.
  • Outros:
    • Kid Buu's victory animation has him blowing up the planet. The scene is based off his first attempt to blow up Earth.
    • The face-shot of Black's victory animation is taken from the key visual of the Future Trunks arc.
    • GT Goku's victory animation is on Shenron's head above the clouds during sunset, which references the ending of GT. He also sports the Nyoi-bo/Power Pole, which he only did in tandem with his GT outfit in The Path to Power movie.
    • Ultra Instinct Goku's victory pose is taken from the Universal Survival Arc's key visual.
    • Super Baby 2's victory pose references this unit from Dokkan Battle.

    Quotes
  • When starting up against Nappa, Yamcha will allude to that one time he fought a Saibaman.
  • If Kid Buu happens to be Adult Gohan's teammate, Gohan may comment on how Kid Buu is not trying to absorb him, referencing the time Super Buu absorbed him to become Ultimate Buu.
  • One of Vegeta's regular victory quotes is his "Super Vegeta" remark to Semi-Perfect Cell, complete with the look of a Super Saiyan Grade 2.
  • When Frieza fights against Cell, the latter will mock him by remarking how he lost to Trunks as Mecha-Frieza.
  • If Vegeta, in his Super Saiyan Blue form, fights Goku Black, his in-game quotes change to lines he said during his fight with him, such as how Black isn't deserving of the power he has since it isn't his.
  • In one of Ginyu's win quotes, he calls himself "a soldier so elite that even crying children are silent in [his] presence!"; this is a reference to the Ginyu Force's theme song from Dragon Ball Z Kai, which contains the lyric "We even silence crying brats!"
  • Goku Black:
    • Goku Black generic quotes are taken from his first time transforming into Super Saiyan Rosé (Dragon Ball Super, episode 56)
My very being towers above all... All things... The whole universe!
"Well? What do you think of this color? Is it not beautiful?
    • While simple at first sight, Goku Black's "Greetings, Son Goku" are the first words he ever spoke to Goku in the anime. (Dragon Ball Super, episode 50)
    • Goku Black's line of his body desiring Goku was part of a conversation with Future Zamasu. (Dragon Ball Super, episode 57)
  • If Base Vegeta tags in for a downed teammate, he'll remark that he has no use for an ally who can't move, referencing when he killed Nappa.
  • Jiren:
    • One of his generic victory quotes has him expressing disappointment towards whoever he is fighting, commenting he expected better out of them. This is taken word-for-word from when Top/Toppo is defeated by Vegeta, with Jiren saying said quote towards the man for his defeat (Dragon Ball Super, episode 126)
    • The introductory line against Hit is taken from him trying to ambush Jiren after fighting Goku for the first time (Episode 110), while his victory quote of "your pride as an assassin means nothing to me" is from episode 111.
The assassin from Universe 6...what do you want?
    • Using his level 3 Super on Goku, Vegeta, or Hit has him say different things, all based around quotes he said when he defeated said character.
  • Videl:
    • Pitting her against Teen Gohan will cause her to remark at being able to fight the Gohan who defeated Cell, and not mentioning it to her father. This references her discovery that it wasn't her father Mr. Satan who defeated Cell, but a young Gohan, her eventual boyfriend and husband.
    • On a more minor note, she will also note that it'll be a pleasure to fight against Gohan's father Goku, even calling him sir out of respect.
  • SS4 Gogeta references the hypothetical fusion, Tiencha, in his victory quote when teaming up with Tien.
You should try fusion sometimes, Tien Shinhan. You know what? You could get Yamcha to fuse with you!

    Story Mode
  • When you finally save Adult Gohan, he's passed out and lying on the Destroyed City stage, almost similar to where Future Gohan's corpse was found.
  • During a special cutscene between Yamcha and Piccolo, the former starts to pray to God while Piccolo remarks that God is Dende. This is a reference to a scene from the Buu Saga, where Krillin did the same thing during the tournament lottery and Piccolo reminding Krillin that he's practically praying to Dende. However, Piccolo's dialogue was changed in the localized version (because the line it's referencing wasn't in the anime dub, since they never referred to Dende as a god, just "Guardian of the Earth") and in the English dub, he simply comments on how he can see why Bulma picked Vegeta over Yamcha.
  • When Cell and Nappa meet, Cell roasts Nappa for being so weak that he can't even go Super Saiyan. Nappa replies that Super Saiyans are legends and not everyone can become one, to which Cell fires back: "It would appear there's a bit of a bargain sale going on for Super Saiyans." This is a callback to the Buu Saga when Vegeta discovers Trunks and Goten can become Super Saiyans and comments incredulously that it's like a "Super Saiyan bargain sale".
  • Speaking of Nappa, during one of his Link Events, he angrily points out how much Vegeta has changed since he last saw him and exclaims "What's he gonna do next, wear pink?!" Vegeta has, in fact, wore pink. Specifically, the pink "BADMAN" shirt Bulma gave him at the beginning of the Android Saga. He wasn’t happy about it, but still.

    Other
  • The name of the Sparking Blast power-up comes from DBZ's first theme song "Cha-la Head Cha-la", which starts and ends with Hironobu Kageyama shouting "Sparking!"
  • The Arcade section of the lobby is designed like Muscle Tower, a Red Ribbon Army base from the original Dragon Ball series.
  • The different Arcade Mode ladders are named after various training areas throughout the series, such as Snake Way (the path that led to King Kai's planet), Extreme Gravity Spaceship (which Goku trained in while traveling to Namek), and Hyperbolic Time Chamber (from the Android saga).
  • Android 21 certainly follows the footsteps of Arc System Works' other Final Bosses, Justice and ν-No.13-, as all three are females who have an artificial body. In addition, her Super Attack, Photon Ray, is a sweeping laser, which is very similar to Justice and Dizzy's Imperial Ray.
  • The character art for Base Form Goku and Vegeta is drawn in a way that resembles the more rounded art style used by Toriyama during the Saiyan arc.
  • Several fusion characters (Vegito, both versions of Gogeta, and Fused Zamasu) gain less ki than normal. This is a reference to how their fused forms consume lots of energy, to the point of shortening the duration of the fusion. SS 4 Gogeta and Fused Zamasu have a lesser penalty due to the former's Super Saiyan 4 form (which consumes less energy than Super Saiyan Blue) and the latter's immortality.
