Characters / Dragon Force Tristan Empire

Go To

Tristan is one of the most powerful nations in all of Legendra, second only to Fandaria. Due to their harsh climate, relatively few people tend to stay there. However, the kingdom is ruled by a dictator who is in full control of the military. From an early age, only the strongest are enrolled into Tristan's military. If a person is not in the military, they are forced to work in the fields in order to produce enough food for the soldiers. The only way to leave the empire or the military is by death. Relatively few are able to defect to the other kingdoms.

Agriculture is the main source of income in Tristan; the country usually produces enough food for its own needs, with very little to export. Due to the harsh winters, a heavy emphasis is placed on farming in order to keep the kingdom well-stocked all year round. Besides farming, the only other occupation for its inhabitants is military service.

Located near the north of Legendra, Tristan has the biggest territory of all the surrounding nations. The empire is surrounded by the ocean on the north, east, and west sides. Attacking armies can only enter Tristan through the south, making it a well-guarded nation.

     Junon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dragon_force_art_4.jpg
Class: Knight
Junon's nation is second only to Goldark's in might. Junon's past is masked in secrecy. It is rumoured that, at an early age, Junon was taken and trained in the old ways by the military commanders of that time. Due to Junon's ice-cool leadership and deadly sword technique, opposing armies now call the commander "The Black Knight of Masked Death".
  • Action Girl: One of the most powerful ones.
  • All Amazons Want Hercules: Implied when Leon mentions he'll probably need to wrestle her arm before she accepts his proposal.
  • Anti-Hero: Embarks on her quest primarily motivated by Revenge. This slowly changes as her Character Development kicks in.
  • Babies Ever After: With Leon, in his epilogue.
  • Badass Family: Junon's father died in combat with Goldark 10 years prior, and Junon is out to avenge him. Bonus points for taking up his classic armour and helm, and "haunting the battlefields as the Black Mask of Death".
  • Battle Couple: With Leon, against Scythe in the Final Battle.
  • Big Damn Kiss: With Leon in her epilogue.
  • Black Knight: Ultimately subverted.
  • Character Development: Junon starts as an angst-ridden, revenge-driven queen, resists the temptation of Faust to wield Eclisis to achieve her goals, and learns to bury the hatchet with Goldark to focus on beating the real Big Bad, Madruk.
    • To elaborate, her mentor from the previous Dragon Force (each of the monarchs gets one), Faust, takes Eclisis from its usual bearer, Zanon (or Goldark if you finished Zanon's sidequest), and tempts Junon with its power. Bonus points for Junon angsting over her father's death at Goldark's hands, and Eclisis being a VERY easy way to get her revenge. She gets better, though, and refuses the offer. In Faust's last appearance to her, he goads her into a fight, and dies when she runs him through. Likely a Suicide by Cop on Faust's part, seeing as how he previously showed enough skill to split her helmet open without so much as scratching her face.
  • Cool Mask: Though it's actually a helmet.
  • Damsel in Distress: Utterly subverted. Ryskim intended to capture her in his second appearance during her campaign only to fail completely as she is far stronger than any of the other targets in the other rulers' campaigns. He then attacks the castle she is currently stationed in. This is the only time Ryskim has a sprite on the world map field.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Though with a huge dash of angst and initially motivated by Revenge.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: In spades.
  • The Dreaded/ Names to Run Away from Really Fast: "The Black Knight of Masked Death".
  • Gender Reveal: Played with. The player knows she's a woman from the start of her campaign, but none of the other monarchs do. Leon in particular is pleasantly surprised when he finds out.
    • In Wein's scenario, upon Junon's capture he is astounded to find out Junon is a woman after an altercation knocks off her mask. Junon then tells Wein that her father brought her up as a man and when she inherited the crown of Tristan, she kept up the ruse for her people's morale.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: In her campaign, she has this reaction when Wein suffers a Heroic BSoD following the defeat of his kingdom and Goldark kicking his ass after he tried to spy on his army.
  • Happily Married: To Leon, in both their epilogues.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Once she loses hers, anyway.
  • The Hero: If the player chooses Tristan, of course.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Can equip the Stargem Sword from the Snow Shrine.
  • Hot-Blooded: With the PS2 voice acting, to a degree.
  • Lady of War: A magnificent example.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: The PS2 remake doesn't even bother hiding the fact that Junon is a woman, going so far as to give her a blatantly female voice, and show her unmasked on the kingdom select screen.
  • Legacy Character: Tristan's monarch, The Black Knight of Masked Death.
  • Magic Knight: Junon starts with Flame Cannon, and gets Meteor Storm at level 5.
  • Official Couple: With Leon.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge/ You Killed My Father: Junon wants to kill Goldark at the start because of this. When it's revealed (also at the beginning) that the diplomatic envoys Tristan sent to Highland were all killed thanks to Fandaria's machinations, Junon teeters on the edge of another RROR against Wein, before being talked out of it by The Good Chancellor.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Yup, under that scary black armor, there's a rather cute woman.
  • Shoulders of Doom: Complete with Spikes of Villainy, only Junon's not exactly evil.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: One of the most foul-mouthed monarchs. One of her battle quote has her call the enemy she's engaging a cretin, and she calls Leon a bastard when he tries to get the jump on her in her bedroom.
  • Sword Beam: Sonic Wave, her final skill, lets her throw five of those at the enemy.
  • True Blue Femininity: Her epilogue shows she ditched her imposing black armor for an elegant blue dress.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Junon's hair is blonde in cutscenes, but a rather striking orange in her portrait (sans helmet). The PS2 remake fixes this.

     Myuriko
As the only person that Junon confides in, Myuriko's friendship and counsel on domestic matters are highly valued.

     Ayrios

     Cinna
Class: Magician
Cinna left Palemoon to join Tristan's army because of its reputation. Despite her weak eyesight, she can still destroy formidable foes with her magic. Junon greatly appreciates her magical abilities.

     Scar
Class: Fighter
Scar is an outstanding swordsman who has only lost one battle: to Scythe of Fandaria. She spared his life, but left him with a reminder of his defeat. One day, he hopes to return the favour.
  • Dark and Troubled Past/ Shellshocked Veteran: Revealed in his backstory: Scythe brutally murdered his entire band of bandits when they tried to rob her. Why did they do such a stupid thing? Because she was disguised as a rich noblewoman at the time. Why was Scythe doing that? because she wanted to kill them just For the Evulz.
    • Understandably, The above event forms the basis of Scar's vendetta against Scythe, to the point where he asks Junon to specifically let him fight Scythe if they meet her. He will even desert to the other kingdoms just for a chance to fight Scythe.
      • Then subverted when you realize that it doesn't make any difference to the game if you do not pit Scar against Scythe in battle. He still carries on his merry way without even complaining about any missed opportunities.
  • Flash Step: Learns Cross Flash.
  • Meaningful Name: Has a horizontal scar across his nose bridge. Very likely received during his Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Razor Wind/ Sword Beam: Sonic Boom/Blast.

     Ortega
Class: Fighter
With his excellent leadership qualities, Ortega organized a band of mercenaries that helped those willing to pay their inflated prices. After being defeated by Junon, he joined Tristan's army.

Gustav's mercenaries (Gustav, Ramzal, and Kidd)
Class: Knight (Gustav), Fighter (Ramzal), Thief (Kidd)
A group of mercenaries hired by Fandaria to assassinate Junon.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: Three very common classes with a low number of troops and average stats. Like Ortega above, Gustav only learns one spell at level 5.
  • Warm-Up Boss: One of the game's easiest. A newbie player won't have much trouble beating them.
