A-I
- A-Cup Angst: Yona isn't flat chested, per say. She's a B-cup. She's just annoyed and aggravated that she's not as curvy as Naruko, her past life. She tends to get pissy whenever someone mentions it, intentionally or not.
- A Mother to Her Men: Yona shows signs of this. She serves as The Leader and The Heart. She cares deeply for her friends and comrades, and hurting one of them is one of her Berserk Buttons. She always tells everybody she's not seeking for the Dragons' powers merely for protection, but to have powerful and trustworthy comrades at her side, even sometimes acting as a Mama Bear towards Yoon and Shin-Ah. She's the one teaching them the importance of trust and teamwork. And in turn, they all respect and admire her determination and optimism. This makes a lot sense, giving Yona's experience.
- Accidental Kiss: Yona recalls her first ever kiss, which was with Sasuke. When she was Naruko, a guy bumped her, causing her to accidentally lock lips with him.
- Action Mom: Naruko in the past. This explains where Yona's Mama Bear instincts come from.
- Aggressive Submissive: Yona, who is normally energetic, strong, confident, compassionate, and often times temperamental and violet, is unusually shy and insecure when it comes to romance and love. This is understandable given her Broken Bird status.
- All Amazons Want Hercules: According to Yona, most kunoichi are attracted to strong men, including herself.
- All Love Is Unrequited: Hak has been pining after Yona/Naruko for years. There's a chance that his feelings might be returned one day.
- All-Loving Heroine: Yona. She would go to any lengths and do whatever it is within her power to help anyone in need.
- All Men Are Perverts: Yona believes that most men are weak, horndogs that would jump any women who tempt them by showing them the slightest bit of skin.
- All Women Are Lustful: Yona has the same belief towards women as well. After Hak is caught being in a brothel by her and Yun and is berated by Yun and Kija for being a pervert, Yona "defends" him by declaring that it's partially not his fault he's "weak", and that most women would "froth at the mouth" when any good looking men compliment them. She suspects that the women Hak just left are probably in some private room right now "doing the deed" to Hak's face and compliment. This causes the others to look at her weirdly when they notice Yona knows a lot more about sex than a princess should.
- Allergic to Love: Yona, due to her Broken Bird status. Somewhat Downplayed though. It's not so much that hates love and affection thrown her way. She's just fearful of whether it's genuine or not, and, subsequently, feeling worthless, inadequate, and rejected. This trait of hers is why Hak "inadvertently" refuses her Test Kiss and declines her when she demands/begs him to kiss her a second time because, despite her brave face, deep down she's scared.
- Later on, Yona's Love Revelation Epiphany makes her realize that she must overcome this. Not just for herself, but for Hak, too.
- Almighty Mom: Naruko. What do you expect from an Action Mom who doubles as the World's Strongest Woman? Yona even once comments that mothers are supposed to be scary, and the appropriate response to someone threatening one of her children is to gouge out their eyeballs and tear them limb from limb. This, of course, terrifies the group, especially Yun, but somewhat excites Hak.
- Amazon Chaser: A unconventional example. Hak is still considered the World's Best Warrior and he has loved Yona long before she revealed herself as a Weak, but Skilled Warrior Princess and learning of her past, but he finds her Blood Knight tendencies a major turn-on, often commenting he has the resist the urge to kiss her several times.
- Sasuke as well.
- In general, most shinobi are attracted to strong women.
- Sasuke as well.
- Anchored Ship: Once Yona understands Hak's feelings for her, she holds off from returning his affections until she is able to deal with her emotional issues.
- Animal Motif: Yona and foxes. She's sly, cunning, and shrewd during combat, a trickster, and a Trap Master.
- Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Naruko and Sasuke have moments like these in their younger years, despite them always getting on each other's nerves.
- Badass Normal: Hak is the most normal member of the group, and yet he is one of the strongest (if not THE strongest) person on the team. This is the reason why, when the time came for her to search for allies, Yona wanted to Hak to be on her side because she knew how powerful and formidable an ally he could be.
- Beautiful Dreamer: Yona quietly admits to herself that Hak is a lot cuter and less of an asshole when he's asleep. Unforuntately for her, Hak was awake at this point and teases her for it.
- Because You Were Nice to Me: Yona informs her friends that Jinchuriki have the tendency to emotionally attach themselves to first people who treated them with even a decent amount of kindness. Herself included.
- This is the basis that started Naruko and Hinata's strong friendship because they were only ones out of their peers for a long time to treat each with respect and kindness.
- It is also debatable whether or not this is what improved Naruko and Sasuke's relationship. Before they just used to be rivals that couldn't even stand each other until the day (about a year after their rivalry started) they had an assignment about who they would spend their last moments with. Naturally, neither Sasuke nor Naruko had anyone like that (being orphans and all). After arguing and lamenting about how stupid the assignment is, they both just decide to put one another's names down. Naruko's reasoning was that she wouldn't let Sasuke die until she finally kicks his ass, and Sasuke's reasoning was that Naruko was the only remotely tolerable person alive that he knows. Although, they could be seen secretly smiling afterwards.
- Not to mention, Naruko and Sasuke were the first to treat each other normally without statuses getting in the way (i.e. Jinchuriki and Uchiha, respectively).
- Somewhat implied to be the reason for Yona's friendship with Hak and Soo-Won. They were the only people, besides her father, that she didn't sense any ulterior motives (i.e. anger, resentment, or bitterness) from throughout her life at the castle.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Yona/Hak now, Naruko/Sasuke in the past. Although, the latter was more belligerent, while the former, though still has its belligerent moments, is more on the UST side of things.
- Berserk Button: Several characters.
- Don't harm the people under Yona's command, especially Yoon and Shin-Ah.
- Don't insult the Dragons by calling them "monsters" or "freaks".
- Soo-Won is practically a walking one for Hak.
- Don't hurt Yona.
- Don't harm the people under Yona's command, especially Yoon and Shin-Ah.
- Betty and Veronica: Sasuke was the Archie to Sakura's coy and smitten Betty and Naruko's Tomboyish and feisty Veronica. What draws the parrellel more is that Sakura is more book smart and intelligent while Naruko shines in the muscle and jutsu department. As time goes on, Sakura becomes stronger and Naruko becomes smarter. Plus, the size of their busts are very different as Sakura is very sensitive about her lack of growth and Naruko has the size comparable to her tomboyish attitude.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Yona. She's highly energetic, friendly, and empathetic. Just don't get on her bad side by either aggravating her or pushing one of her Berserk Buttons as Tae-Jun found out the hard way. As noted by many characters, Yona is scary when she's angry.
- Big Eater: Yona. There's an In-Universe reason for this. Because she uses chakra, she needs to eat more than the average person since food and rest help replenish her reserves. Hak teases her for this, sometimes calling her "a gluttonous princess". One of the first places the guards go to look for her after the king's death is the kitchen because Yona's known to sneak in at times for late night snacks.
- Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Soo-Woon, Hak, and Yona respectively in their childhood.
- Team 7. Naruko (blonde hair), Sasuke (black hair), and Sakura (more pink hair than red), respectively.
- Blood Knight:
- Hak loves fighting. Although, he despises war.
- Yona has glimmers of this as well. It terrifies Yoon and excites Hak. When she talks about how she used beat the boys and girls who were picking on her black and blue, she does this with a serene smile on her face and a murderous aura exuding from her.
- Bodyguard Crush: Hak has one towards Yona.
- Bodyguarding a Badass: Yona asks Hak this word for word while smugly proud when it's revealed that she was the World's Strongest Woman in her past life. Although it's Downplayed now since she isn't as strong as she used to be.
- Book Dumb: Yona deliberately averts being this. Not wanting to make the same mistake as she did when she was Naruko. Especially considering that she can't power through everything due to being weaker than her past self.
- Bratty Half-Pint: Played with. Yona admits that she used to be a brash, loud, trouble-making kid. Though, it was just to hide her pent up frustrations.
- Broken Ace: Naruko quickly realizes that Sasuke was this, and regrets turning a blind eye to it due to her jealousy over his skill level. If she hadn't, then maybe she could have prevented his Face–Heel Turn. This is the main reason why Yona is trying to do better with Hak after Soo-Won's betrayal, so she doesn't make the same mistake again.
- Broken Bird: Yona shows some subtle signs of this, especially in regards to Sasuke, but loses it almost completely after regaining all of her memories. Initially, Hak is only one to recognize this behavior after realizing Yona's desperate need to be as self-reliant as possible.
- Brought Down to Badass: Yona. Seeing as she's a reincarnation of Naruko, she has chakra, though only 1/8th of her usual reserves. She also can't perform the Shadow Clone Jutsu, the Transformation Jutsu, or the Substitution Jutsu. She has to relearn the Rasengan and she could only use Sage Mode for a very short period (i.e. less than three minutes). But with the usage of her chakra and chakra control, she's able increase the sharpness of any weapons she uses to deadly effects. Enough for even an arrow to cleanly pierce through a tree. She also knows sealing techniques, how to make traps, and martial arts, and has years of combat experience under her belt. She's admits that her limited arsenal made her more of a Combat Pragmatist compared to her previous life. This is why Yona is considered a Weak, but Skilled fighter.
- Cannot Spit It Out: Naruto would always regret her inability to convey what she truly feels caused a rift in her relationship with Sasuke. She contemplates if she was honest with herself and with him, then she probably could've prevented his defection.
- Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Heavily implied with Yona. Guile Heroine Yona is The Tease who would happily manipulate both men and women by using their fetishes against them. Though, she doesn't see it as being perverted, but more as a prank or a means to an end. However, when it comes to Hak, she's completely stumped.
- Casual Danger Dialogue: Hak engages in this frequently.
- Childhood Friends: Yona, Hak, and Soo-Won were this until Soo-Won killed Yona's father, King Il, forcing Yona to fake her own death and driving Hak out the castle and turning him into a fugitive.
- The Clan: Naruko was born an Uzumaki who married into the Uchiha clan via Sasuke before her death.
- Clingy Jealous Girl:
- Sakura and the rest of Sasuke's fan club is this, especially when he seems to pay more attention (whether good or bad) to Naruko than he does them.
- Naruko becomes this after she and Sasuke finally start dating.
- Yona is a low-key example. She gets sad and gloomy instead of angry. She starts showing signs of this when her feelings for Hak begins to grow. It's heavily implied that some deep-seated insecurities due to Naruko's past makes her feel unworthy of his undying devotion and affection because she can't find any reasons why he likes her (beyond friendship) in the first place, even though he spells it out for her time and time again on a few occasions. In her mind, she's aware of how popular Hak is with women, and could easily find a woman who's ten times better than her.
- Covert Pervert: Yona, much to everyone's utter surprise because...well...because she's a princess. Having such a behavior should be underneath her. The first instance is when Yoon notices she seems way to into Hak and Jae-Ha's "secret meeting" (it was really a brothel). In reality, they were just hiding from the officers after the two assaulted some earlier. Yona was decidedly disappointed when none of the "good stuff" happened.
- Crapsack World: What Yona describes her old world as. To her, her new world/new life is a Crapsaccharine World in comparison. Her old world was a place where most idealistic children would eventually, whether they want to or not, have to take several levels of cynicism and, after suffering through various degrees of trauma time and time again because War Is Hell and, as a result of losing loved ones and/or having their idealistic outlook horrendously shattered, become crazy, evil, or broken adults. Or any combination of the three. Although, there are some individuals that have enough willpower to not end up falling in any of the category. And the reasons they become soldiers/shinobi can range from "I want to be the strongest/the leader in my village." to "I want to protect my family and friends.", or "I want to prove something.", and as tragic as "I want to be useful/have a purpose in life.", or simply, "I don't want to die.", and everything in between. Although, there are some people with very stupid reasons like "There's a guy/girl I want to impress." for becoming a ninja. It gets even worse when the revelation that most shinobi are or were Child Soldiers, starting from kids as old as thirteen to as young as six and, at one period, the average life expectancy was as low as thirty hits in. Orphans and parents Outliving Their Offsprings seem to be the norm because of all the constant fighting. She even lampshades the fact that if there's an extremely high probability of an orphan lying around and killing said orphans could be considered one of the kindest acts of mercy one can give them, then it is not a pleasant world. Being a Child Soldier is one of the worst things a person can be! Nothing but sadness, pain, and tragedy awaits them! The look on her friends' faces when she tells them this says it all. In short, War Is Glorious does not exist. War is absolute hell! Where are the fucking therapists when someone needs them?!
- Oh, that's not even getting into the fact that there are nine Animalistic Abominations, who are, most of the time, sealed inside people called Jinchuriki (Naruko included) for the sole purpose of making them into Living Weapons, causing both Tailed Beasts and most of their hosts to despise and hate humanity for the crappy way they are treated and turning them into various degrees of Broken Birds and/or Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds. And all this started because a an utter monster wanted to resurrect his power-hungry Physical Goddess of a mother.
- Though, Yona does tell them her old world is becoming more like A World Half Full during her time as people are realizing and moving on from the mistakes of the past, and are averting There Are No Therapists.
- Crazy Jealous Guy:
- Sasuke has this in spades when he realizes his feelings for Naruko. Possibly due to his insecurities and his inability to forgive himself for the years of pain he's put her through.
- Averted with Hak because he has reached enlightenment.
- Cry Laughing: Yona does this is in Chapter 5. The Wind Tribe reminds her so much of Konoha that the feelings she kept bottled up for years, suddenly bursts out, reducing her to tears.
- Dangerous 16th Birthday: Just like in Canon, the main plot begins after Yona's father is murdered on the night of her 16th birthday.
- Death Glare: Yona has a fierce one that terrifies anybody that's on the receiving end of it. When Tae-Jun is on the receiving end of one while she's giving him a big "The Reason You Suck" Speech, he almost wets his pants. This is the first instance to everyone who witnessed the scene, especially Hak, that Yona is not the wallflower princess she appears to be.
- Deer in the Headlights: Yona practically has this reaction after Hak kisses her.
- Defiant Captive: Yona, as anyone can attest to. Good luck trying to capture her. And even if someone does, she'll be kicking and screaming all the while. They also better make sure to check her pockets as well, or else, she might still escape, despite being tied up. Yona almost bit one of her corrupt Awa captor's ear off for crying out loud! God! This girl is a terrible captive.
- Despair Event Horizon: It's quite debatable on whether or not Yona crossed this after her death as Naruko. She shows some very well hidden subtle signs of being a Broken Bird. However, further evidence reveals, she hasn't crossed the DEH yet, she was just on one, massively long Heroic BSoD, and she gets over it after regaining her full memory.
- Desperately Craves Affection:
- Yona eventually comes to the conclusion that this and Living Emotional Crutch is what fueled both hers and Sasuke's friendship and eventual romance. She realizes this when she comes registers the fact that her relationship with Hak is much healthier than the one she had with Sasuke.
- It almost leads Naruko and Sasuke into making a mistake of almost having Their First Time when they are both too young and aren't emotionally ready yet. Luckily, they realize this and stop before things get too far.
- Detect Evil: To be more precise, Yona has the ability to sense negative emotions (i.e. hatred, anger, sadness, fear, etc.). She theorizes that it's probably due to her keen empathy after being so used to sensing negative emotions as Naruko, though it is not as potent as in her previous life.
- Driven by Envy: Sasuke was ultimately driven by this during his time as a villain. Naruko and Itachi fighting and persevering as true shinobi despite the overwhelming adversity in their lives was something Sasuke admired. But likewise he was envious because he himself never could find the strength to do the same and instead used things like hatred and revenge for motivation.
- Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Yona sometimes has these whenever unpleasant parts of her past are brought up. Expect her to either go into [[Heroic Safe Mode to keep herself from lashing out, or enter Tranquil Fury mode and verbally or physically bash the person who pushed her Berserk Button.
- Dysfunction Junction: Everyone in the group has some sort of emotional baggage/issue.
- Yona... Oh, Yona. Where to even begin... Yona has too many issues to count. Hak sadly comments that it feels like she makes a conscious effort to close her heart off somewhat and keep others at a certain distance. Not to mention, Naruko's emotionally abused childhood crippled Yona to the extent that she doesn't know what a healthy form of love is and/or is associating love with pain, believing that love can't exist without suffering, making her a somewhat Deconstruction to Oblivious to Love. She's not oblivious because she's dumb, ignorant, naive, or dense. She's oblivious because she never had proper guidance on the issue or has misguided/misleading/twisted ideas/views of the concept.
- Hak is haunted by Soo-Won's betrayal.
- The Empath: Yona has the ability to sense negative emotions.
- Et Tu, Brute?: Soo-Won's betrayal when he killed King Il. Hak is so hurt by this that he becomes a Stepford Snarker and refuses to get too close to his new comrades.
- Yona, on the other hand, is not as affected as much as Hak is. Maybe because it's not the first time she's experienced a betrayal by a close friend and she's suffered far worse experiences. She considers Soo-Won's betrayal just another bad experience she must endure.
- Experienced Protagonist: Yona. This makes her a very efficient and deadly Weak, but Skilled Warrior Princess.
- Face–Heel Turn: Being The Resenter, Driven by Envy, and the need for revenge over his murdered family and clan all take a part into making Sasuke turn heel.
- Fallen Princess: Yona, although she faked her death, is still technically because her father has been overthrown.
- Fiery Redhead: Naruko's personality and memories in Yona's body. What do you expect?
- The First Cut Is the Deepest:
- A platonic example. Hak was so affected by Soo-Won's betrayal that it turned him into a Stepford Snarker. Yona is concerned with this because Hak is reluctant to get too close to their new comrades.
- This applies to Naruko/Yona as well. In regards to Sasuke. Her What Is This Thing You Call "Love"? or her poor opinion about love in general could be generated back to her toxic relationship with her former teammate or witnessing the peers and adults in her past life poor experiences with love.
- Though, she does admit that the toxicity of their relationship was a two-way street.
- Luckily, Naruko and Sasuke do manage to fix their once broken relationship after the latter does a Heel–Face Turn and becomes The Atoner. They eventually end up Happily Married with a son and daughter.
- Naruko's messy relationship with Sasuke probably highlights the reason why Yona has trouble understanding Hak's feelings for her.
- First Kiss: Hak kisses Yona.
- This is played straight in the fact that it was Hak's first kiss, but subverted with Yona, given her past.
- First Love: Sasuke was Yona's first love in the past life.
- Forceful Kiss: This trope is taken into a somewhat dark turn when Yona asks Hak to kiss her as an "experiment". To get rid of Sasuke's "poisonous love" and understand Hak's feelings for her. When Hak goes in to kiss her, he notices her trembling and opts out because he knows it'll just hurt the princess more than help her. When he refuses, Yona impulsively kisses him. But, like Hak predicted, not a second passed before a single stray tear fall from her eye. Sasuke's "I love you" still haunts Yona/Naruko, and leaving Hak filled with rejection and regret.
- Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: The reason why Naruko has trouble falling in love. She may have forgiven the villagers, but she has not forgotten the hell they put her through during her childhood. Suitors and men didn't give a damn about her when she was a orphaned nobody, but after she defeated Pain and became a hero, now they care and are vying for her affections.
- This also pertains to Sasuke, but for a different reason. After his Heel–Face Turn and realizing how much Naruko meant to him, he's self-aware enough to realize that he had to work hard to earn her forgiveness and put in a lot of effort into making her fall in love with him. This is a major part of the reason he becomes The Atoner.
- Oddly enough, because this is averted with Hak, Yona becomes an Insecure Love Interest. Probably because Hak's the first man to genuinely treat Naruko/Yona with respect and kindness. Usually, she's the one giving more of herself to satisfy people and fighting tooth and nail to gain everyone's respect and acknowledgement. But now that it's the other (sort of) way around (minus the fighting for respect part), she doesn't know how to respond. Yona has found a man who's loyal, selfless, and self-sacrificing and she doesn't know what to do. It's the first time a Love Interest cared about her needs and happiness and isn't just Loving a Shadow. What Is This Thing You Call "Love"? indeed.
- Gender Flip: Naruko is the female version of Naruto.
- Has a Type: Yona claims that she has no interest in weak men, and is only into the strong, confident ones. In actuality, Yona just wants a man who's genuinely kind, loyal, and loves her for who she is. Being strong wouldn't hurt either.
- Hates Being Alone: Yona hates loneliness more than anything. In fact, the thing that scared her more than her father's death and Soo-Won's betrayal was the thought of being left alone in world. Having Hak by her side was a truly welcoming comfort for her, and she is truly thankful to him for that. For staying by her side. Given her past, this fear of loneliness makes a lot of sense.
- Heal the Cutie: This was Hak's first response when he finally notices how sad and lonely Yona is. He laments the fact that he never noticed how broken she is on the inside before and is determined to do right by being the emotional support she could lean on. Yona's relationship with Hak and regaining her full memories is what helps her overcome her broken past.
- Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite being perhaps the kindest person in the story and having saved plenty of lives as both Naruko and Yona, Yona still sees herself as a pathetic failure that can't save anybody. Although, as she regains her full memories, this attitude progressively lessens. Mostly.
- He Is Not My Boyfriend: Yona's response whenever someone questions her relationship with Hak and/or her growing feelings for him.
- She was this way towards Sasuke in the past as well.
- Hope Is Scary: "Love is scary" is more accurate. This is basically Yona's reaction to love and romance. Well, directed towards her.
- Hopeless Suitor: Hak has secretly been in love with Yona ever since they were kids, but kept his feelings a secret, thinking that she had feelings for Soo-Won. Even when he finally kisses and confesses to her, he remains ignorant to her growing feelings for him.
- Hot-Blooded: After Yona is forced to flee the castle along with Hak and is no longer required to keep up the "princess" persona, she shows shades of this. She's passionate, outgoing, energetic, and hyperactive to the point that is has people questioning if she's really a princess.
- I Gave My Word: Despite being in reincarnated as Yona, this is still Naruko we are talking about. "I never go back on my word!"
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Hak confesses that nothing in the world would make him happier than seeing Yona happy. She is deeply touched, moved to tears by this. This triggers the beginnings of Yona's Love Revelation Epiphany because it's the first time (presumably) that a man cared that much about her.
- It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: What's Yona's response to finding out she's the reincarnation of the Red Crimson Dragon? An exasperated sigh.
- Imaginary Love Triangle: Hak thinks Yona harbors feelings for Soo-Won. She doesn't.
- Insecure Love Interest: Yona reveals herself as this. Comes with all the Heroic Self Deprecations about herself and the fact that she doesn't believe she's pretty enough when compared to other women.
- Her first reaction to Hak's kiss is to go into "fight or flight" mode. Since a kiss isn't something someone can beat down, she chose the "flight" response and immediately ran out the room, screaming her head off. When she was discussing what happened with Yoon, he comments that he saw her running away "like a frightened child". And she doesn't react very positively when Hak tries to kiss her a second time as a "test". It's heavily hinted that because of her emotionally stunted childhood as Naruko, Yona doesn't know how to properly react to romantic affections.
J-R
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sasuke. He's a brooding, antisocial Jerkass who becomes subtly more caring and affectionate towards his teammates. Then Itachi happens and then it goes downhill from there, leading to his Face–Heel Turn. Eventually, Naruko is able to knock some sense to him, making him do a long overdue Heel–Face Turn. After Sasuke becomes The Atoner, he and Naruko are Happily Married with a son and daughter.
- Hak also well. Yona basically describes him as such. An ass with a decent side. He's a Deadpan Snarker Sarcastic Devotee who enjoys teasing her and others he's close with, but Yona remarks that he's very kind, loyal, and supportive. Despite his obnoxious attitude, he's a very good man deep down.
- Kissing Cousins: Hak believes Yona has a crush on Soo-Won. She doesn't. She only sees him as a brother.
- Lady and Knight: Bright Lady Yona to Hak's White Knight.
- Lady of War: Yona. Although, she relays more on her "brains" than her "brawns", that doesn't mean she's a pushover. Far from it. Thanks to being Naruko once, she knows martial arts, how to wield knives, how to shoot an arrow (spend her childhood training how to use a bow and arrow), and how to set up traps.
- Like Mother, Like Daughter: This is an unconventional example. Yona ponders the fact that she's more like her past life's parents than her new parents. Just like Kushina, she shows some signs of being a Hot-Blooded Tomboy. This is something she tries really hard to hide and keep under control, so that she doesn't blow her "princess" persona. Even more so when she now has red hair and purple eyes just like her former mother.
- Like Parent, Like Child: She's also a kinesthetic learner like Minato.
- Like Parent, Like Spouse: An unconventional example. Naruko likes men who are strong, confidant, and kind like her first father, Minato.
- Living Emotional Crutch:
- Over time, it becomes clear that Yona and Hak are this for each other. Hak has been Yona's bodyguard and confidant long before they were forced to flee the castle and he's her longest and most trusted friend. However, for the most part, he's the one who keeps her together, serving as her emotional support in times of need, and, in turn, she calms him down and tries her best to keep him from giving into hatred and revenge. What she initially failed to do with Sasuke, and she's trying to absolute best to prevent that from ever happening again.
- Naruko and Sasuke were this for each other in the past. For most of the time Naruko was considered Sasuke's closest and Only Friend and the one person keeping him from going full-on villainy.
- Love Hurts: Naruko was genuinely in love with Sasuke, but it was that same love that caused her a lot of pain, suffering, and grief, especially after he left Konoha. This is one of the reasons why Yona has trouble responding to Hak's affections. Because she isn't hurting by the pain of it.
- Naruko admits she's not entirely free of guilt either. She was well aware of just how lonely Sasuke was and how much he was suffering from his family's death, and she regrets letting her insecurities and jealousy of his skills prevent her from doing anything. She wonders if she had or did a little more, then maybe she could have stopped him from defecting Konoha.
- In the end, Naruko and Sasuke's shared loneliness is what brought them together and caused them both a lot of grief and suffering, yet it was the competition between them that kept them going for the most part.
- They got better in the end, fixing their relationship after Sasuke became The Atoner. They become Happily Married with a son and daughter.
- Love Redeems: You can consider Sasuke ended up with Naruko, after everything he did to her, as this. Although, he may have earned her friendship, that doesn't mean he didn't have his work cut out for him to earn her love.
- Love Revelation Epiphany: Although Yona still remains Oblivious to Love after Hak's kiss and confession, people begin to notice how shy and embarrassed she becomes when she's alone with him or at the prospect of being alone with him, even if she remains unaware of true extent of her own unresolved sexual feelings for him. The only who is remains ignorant of Yona's feelings is, ironically, Hak himself.Yona (thinking to herself and curled up in her bed): "How could he create a dent in her walls so easily? A wall she spent years building up? With just a few words? Why did Hak saying that make her so happy?"
- Love Triangle: Team 7. Sakura is infatuated with Sasuke. Sasuke, while annoyed (and would never admit it), has only ever showed interest in Naruko, although his interest becomes unhealthy for time until his Heel–Face Turn. Naruko, meanwhile, has a complex and competitive yet gradually endearing relationship with Sasuke.
- Loving a Shadow: Yona seems to have a problem with people falling in love with the idea of her rather than who she actually is. This is probably one of the reasons why she got fed up with Tae-Jun "courtship". That and he merely saw her as a object, not a person, and stepping stone to become the next king.
- Yona even discusses the trope with Hak in a flashback when conversing about their objects of affections. It boils down to her asking him "What if the girl he has a crush on is nothing but a facade to hide some deep-seated insecurities and a HUGE emotional baggage?" His response? That won't stop him from loving her. When Hak, in the present, finally confesses to her, heavily implying that the girl they were discussing about years before was her all along, this is the main catalyst that transforms Yona into an Insecure Love Interest after her Love Revelation Epiphany. However, she finds it only fair that she fixes herself up by overcoming her past "issues" before she begins to have a serious relationship with him.
- Mama Bear: Yona sometimes acts like this, being very caring and fiercely protective of her friends, especially towards Yoon and Shin-Ah. This sometimes confuses the group when she acts all "motherly" when she's practically the second youngest member of the group. She may be physically younger than them, but she's mentally thrice their age.
- It's eventually revealed that she used to be an Action Mom.
- The Masochism Tango: After noting how healthier her relationship with Hak is, Yona notes how much more dysfunctional hers was with Sasuke in comparison. Yona, though, realizes that perhaps they were too "broken from their loveless childhood" to have a proper relationship.
- Even a stranger mistakes them for a couple and calls them on this type of relationship, even though they vehemently deny being a couple.
"You two are the most broken, dysfunctional couple I have ever met."- Later subverted when it's revealed that Naruko and Sasuke do end up having a proper relationship after the latter's Heel–Face Turn and becomes The Atoner.
- Morality Chain: Yona laments the fact that Naruko was this for Sasuke. Sasuke considered her to be his Only Friend and she imagines that if she had died earlier then that would have shattered the last shreds of his sanity. If he wasn't Ax-Crazy to begin with, then he would've been pushed up to eleven upon her premature death.
- Mutual Envy: Part of what drove Naruko and Sasuke's Masochism Tango. In their younger years, Naruko was jealous of Sasuke's skills while he was jealous of her steadily growing strength as it seemed like (to him) he hasn't gotten any stronger since the Academy.
- My Beloved Smother: Yona really does love her father, King Il. She really does. However, she has found some annoyance with his over-protectiveness and his refusal to let her learn anything or do anything (in his eyes) that could potentially harm her or put her at risk, such as learning to use weapons, learning medicine, or even as simple as going outside the castle grounds. She laments the fact that her father's behavior could sometimes reach smothering levels.
- My Greatest Second Chance: Yona is more aware and sensitive to Hak's hidden inner thoughts and feelings after Soo-Won's betrayal, and doing everything she can to prevent him from becoming He Who Fights Monsters, not wanting to make the same mistake Naruko did with Sasuke In fact, one of the first things she does after the betrayal is to beg Hak not to seek vengeance.
- Nightmare Fetishist: Yona has shown a fondness for horror novels. More specifically survival horror and/or horror/mystery. Before the start of the plot, she secretly wrote and published a couple of horror/mystery manga to earn some cash. Although, she admits that some of her works are based off manga she had read in her previous life. The only thing she's not fond of is ghosts. She is absolutely terrified of them. Which is, noted by both Hak and Yun, quite strange because she's perfectly fine with blood, gore, and torture, but a dead person scares her?
- Non-Action Guy: Yoon is only person in Yona's group who doesn't fight. Though, that doesn't mean he's a pushover. The boy is a genius after all.
- Noodle Incident: Yona had performed some kind of stunt with a rope and hanger that caused her to twist her leg. Judging by Hak's amused and snickering expression every time it's brought up, it must have been something very stupid and utterly laughable. It's implied by Yona herself that this isn't the first time she has done stunts like this to keep herself awake on full moon nights, but it's the first time being caught and injured.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: Yona. She uses her reserved and modest disposition to keep suspicion off her. But really she's cunning and shrewd underneath her facade.
- Oblivious to Love: Yona doesn't catch on to Hak's feelings for her, despite obvious hints. Even when he kisses her, she still remains oblivious.
- This is deconstructed. It's heavily implied that Yona's so emotionally crippled (due to Naruko's terrible childhood) that she can't even recognize when someone has feelings for her, even thinking that Hak kissing her was a Friends with Benefits moment, and she's determined not to let it happen again because it wouldn't do either of them any good.
- This is zigzagged somewhat because Yona is fully aware of love and attraction. A rather twisted view of it. Because of this she's oblivious when it's pointed towards her when she unable to understand that love doesn't have to be cruel and painful. Any romantic affections towards her would cause her to freeze and doubt whether it's genuine or not. Her massive Heroic Self-Deprecation really is a problem she must overcome. And she realizes this herself when she decides to wait to return Hak's affections before starting a serious relationship with him.
- Official Couple: Naruko/Sasuke.
- One of the Boys: Naruko sometimes hung out with Kiba, Shikamaru, and Choji while in the Academy. Yona is even Childhood Friends with Hak and Soo-Won. She even comments that, although she does have some female friends, she gets along better with guys than with girls.
- Only a Flesh Wound: Adverted. Yona really misses the fact she can't shrug off mortal injuries because no more Healing Factor.
- Parental Title Characterization: Yona refers to King Il and his wife, Queen Qi-Yun, as "Father" and "Mother", respectively, but she refers to Minato and Kushina as "Papa" and "Mama", respectively. This former is to due hers and her parents royalty status while the latter is (technically no longer her biological parents) to showcase that she still sees them as her parents and to show how much affection she has for them. Hak is the only one so far that notices the distinction.
- Patient Childhood Love Interest: A rare male example. Hak has habored feelings for Yona for years. He does eventually confess, but because of her reaction, he thinks she will never feel the same towards him. He backs off, not wanting to cause her any more awkwardness.
- Plucky Girl: Just like she was in her past life, Yona is this.
- Poor Communication Kills: Yona notes that if she (as Naruko) and Sasuke had just sat down and actually talked to each other without letting their jealousy and insecurities get in the way, most of their Love Hurts Masochism Tango relationship could have been avoided.
- Princess Protagonist: Yona
- Rag Tag Bunch Of Misfits: In short order the Crimson Fire consists of a Reincarnated Weak, but Skilled Warrior Princess who is mentally older than she is physically (not to mention she was a former kunoichi and a jinchuriki who was considered the World's Strongest Woman in her past life), a former ex-general Hunk who is the World's Best Warrior, a Pretty Boy Team Mom, a Sheltered Aristocrat with a Right Hand of Doom, an introverted social outcast with "Uh-Oh" Eyes, and a Chivalrous Perverted masochist with a powerful Extremity Extremist.
- It almost seems like Yona is trying to invoke this trope by saying that they only thing their group is missing is a girl (not counting her) to up the cuteness factor of their team. According to her they are missing The Cutie from the fool, cutie, and genius dynamic.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Yona delivers a massive one to Tae-Jun when she finally gets fed up with his "courtship" of her. Even giving him a black eye to solidfy how frustrated and aggravated she is by his attempts because he just couldn't take the hint that she wasn't interested.
- Rebellious Princess: Yona is an unconventional example. She inwardly monologues how much being a princess is such a drag. Though she does uses some of the perks of being a princess to her own advantages (i.e. having maids and servants do her chores, so she has more time to sneak off and train, or use some of her lessons to disguise the fact that she's training). She does note that if she didn't have the mature mind of her past life, then it wouldn't have bothered her as much.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Naruko was the idealistic, loud, and brash Red to Sasuke's cynical, cool, and stoic Blue.
- Reincarnation: Naruko Uzumaki of the Hidden Leaf Village dies and is reincarnated as Princess Yona of Kouka Kingdom complete with Past-Life Memories and about a quarter of her usual chakra reserves.
- The Resenter: It's heavily implied that Sasuke became this after being Driven by Envy because of the fact that Naruko was growing stronger by the simple need to protect her loved ones and overcoming her tragic past to prosper as a true shinobi, something he couldn't do, instead relying on hatred and revenge as motivator. He was jealous that, deep down, he was living in her shadow.
- Riches to Rags: Yona becomes this after her father is murdered. She goes from living a somewhat carefree life of luxury to living outside the castle and traveling the country on the run with Hak incognito. Though, she's not the least bit bothered by it, mainly due to the fact that she went from Rags to Riches in her past life. She just went full circle.
- Rivalry as Courtship: This was Naruko's relationship with Sasuke in the past. Although, it's more complex than that.
S-Z
- Sarcastic Devotee: Hak is very loyal to Yona and serves as her bodyguard. Although, he has a very snarky attitude and likes to tease her a lot.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Naruko is the Hot-Blooded energetic girl to Sasuke's The Stoic savvy guy.
- Yona shares this dynamic again with Hak being the energetic Tomboy Princess to Hak's Deadpan Snarker savvy guy.
- Second Love: Hak gradually becomes this for Yona, especially after he confesses.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: What Yona describes Soo-Won and Hak as when they were kids. Soo-Won is the nice and sweet Sensitive Guy to Hak's snarky and annoying Manly Man.
- Silk Hiding Steel: What Yona considers herself as with Yona as the "silk" persona and Naruko as the "steel" persona.
- Silly Rabbit, Romance Is for Kids!: Yona seems to have this ideology when it comes to love. She considers love to be poisonous. This could fall in line of her twisted misunderstanding about love or lack of understanding. She drops this attitude altogether after her Love Revelation Epiphany, thanks to Hak teaching her what love really means.
- Single-Target Sexuality: Hak has always been and will always be Yona-sexual. It's not like girls haven't shown interest in him either.
- Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Yona wants a man who is kind, loyal, and strong, and who loves her for who she is, not her status. It's no wonder she falls for Hak.
- Ship Tease: There's quite a lot between Yona and Hak.
- Stepford Smiler: Yona is so good at acting, it's very hard to tell if her smiles are real or not. Only those very close to her can spot the subtle differences in her smiles. It's hinted that Yona may be a Type A. Especially when the topic of orphans and loneliness comes up. Those topics seem to sour her mood somewhat. She somewhat admits to putting up a mask while living in the castle.
- Stepford Snarker: At first glance, Hak appears to be unaffected by Soo-Won's betrayal, even continuing on with his Deadpan Snarker and Gadfly shtick. Yona is the only one that notices that he's hurting a lot more than he outwardly displays, which is why she is watching him very closely, so that he doesn't fall into hatred and despair. Like Sasuke did.
- Stuff Blowing Up: Yona recreates explosive tags. She attaches them to arrows to make them more deadly.
- Yoon is pretty good at making bombs as well.
- Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Hak.
- The Tease: A zigzagged example. Yona is noticeably for pulling of Innocent Innuendos and being unaware she makes the men in her group embarrassed and flustered when she picks a stray piece of food off Kija's face and eats it, or when she casually sits on Hak's lap (because she wanted to reenact a romantic scene for a book/manga she's working on to get a "feel" for the atmosphere). However, when it comes time to infiltrate Yang Kum-Ji's traffic ring, she acts very submissive and coy. When questioned, Yona declares that everybody has a Fetish, and exploiting that fetish is best way to gain their "attention and trust". Justified in the fact, that being a former kunoichi, she probably had to learn a bunch of tactics to get close or deceive her "targets".
- Her realizing that her actions and dialogue with Hak are kinda flirty is a step closer to her Love Revelation Epiphany.
- Test Kiss: Yona's "free kiss" coupon to Hak is supposed to serve as this. She was understand why Hak kissed her, and where his feelings stand for her. When he doesn't use it, she feels..."disappointed and cheated", noting how strange it was for her to feel these things when she should be feeling relieved. Hak still has the coupon though.
- Their First Time: It's revealed in Chapter 11 that Naruko almost had her first full-on sexual experience with Sasuke. They "experimented", but never went too far (i.e. merely seeing each other dressed in nothing but underwear, kissing, and groping). They stop because they both realize that they aren't emotionally ready (i.e. trauma and issues like PTSD, severe depression, crippling loneliness, and Sasuke's Inferiority Superiority Complex) and the consequences that may occur if they went all the way (which would open up a whole new can of emotional problems/issues by the way since they were both only thirteen, almost fourteen-years-old at the time and aren't stable/functional enough to raise a child). They agree never to talk about it ever again.
- Considering the fact that they do eventually become married and have a son and daughter means that they did go all the way later in life when their relationship is better, healthier, and more functional.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Naruko was the outgoing and hot-tempered Tomboy to Hinata's shy and demure Girly Girl.
- Tomboy Princess: Yona. She spends most of her childhood training and setting up hidden traps around the palace, using her lessons as an excuse to cover of what she is really doing behind the scenes. It's more accurate to say that the Yona persona is the "princess" and the Naruko persona is the "tomboy". Even Hak, Yoon, and her new companions are surprised that, despite being a princess, Yona has some rather...boyish interests (i.e. doesn't mind camping, is enthusiastic about training and learning weaponry, and making traps). This is probably reason why they, specifically Yoon, question if she's really a princess.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite Naruko reliving a new life, she is this as Yona, thanks to her upbringing and learning the appropriate behaviors and etiquette of a Proper Lady for a princess. She even remarks that she's more girly in this new life whereas, in her old life, she was a full on Hot-Blooded Tomboy. A few of her hobbies even include cooking and gardening.
- Tranquil Fury: This is Yona's default expression whenever she's enraged.
- Trap Master: Thanks to being a notorious prankster in her past life, Yona is this. Case in point, it helps her escape from the castle after her father is murdered by Soo-Won. She rigged the entire palace with traps!
- Trauma Conga Line: All of Yona's past. Enough said! If that isn't enough, she was powerless to stop her new parents' deaths. This is why Yona feels like she's a weak, powerless, and useless princess.
- Trauma-Induced Amnesia: It's heavily hinted that Yona is suffering from this because she's recalling parts of her past she doesn't remember. Such as recollecting having a son and daughter for example, but not remembering with who or when.
- Tsundere: Yona is a Type B. She's generally very loving, sweet and caring, especially towards her loved ones. But she has a hot-tempered, impatient, and violent side that tends to come out on occasions. Even more so when Hak teases her.
- Naruko is a Type B as well. Very sweet, caring, and loyal towards her friends. Unless Sasuke's in the picture, then she turns temperamental and competitive. At least initially.
- Understanding Boyfriend: Hak is becoming this more and more as Yona starts sharing some of her past with him and later the rest of the members of their crew. He's actually sticking by his words of liking Yona, no matter how broken she is on the inside. Possible one of the reasons why Yona starts to fall for him.
- Undying Loyalty: Hak has this towards Yona. So much so that Yona is geniunely surprised and shocked that Hak decides to stay with her, despite the fact that she had kept her identity a secret from him for years.
- Eventually extends to the rest of the Crimson Fire Brigade.
- The Wind Tribe towards Hak.
- Used to Be a Tomboy: A Downplayed version. Yona went from a Hot-Blooded Tomboy in her past life to a Tomboy with a Girly Streak. She did have her girly side in her former life, but giving how she was raised to be a princess, her girly side is played up.
- Verbal Tic: Yona still has the knack of saying "dattebayo" whenever she feels agitated, flustered, and excited even in this new life.
- Warrior Princess: What Yona reveals herself as, much to the surprise of others. Well, it helps being a former shinobi and all.
- Weak, but Skilled: Yona may not be as strong as Hak or the Dragon Warriors and she may be a lot weaker than she was in her past life (she notes that she only has about 1/8th or 1/7th of her former chakra level because she's no longer an Uzumaki and no Kurama living inside her), but she makes it up with tons of former battle experience, the ability set up simple and complex traps, being innovative (such as putting explosive tags on arrows), and using her wits and cunningness. This is why she is considered The Strategist of the group.
- Wham Line: The Reveal that Yona is not just an Action Girl Warrior Princess, she was an Action Mom. The announcement leaves everyone Stunned Silence.Yona: "Kazuki is not my lover. He's my son.
- What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Yona admits that she doesn't understand the difference between romantic love and familial and platonic love. She's very aware that this may be due to her emotionally stunted childhood as Naruko. Her childhood as Yona might have been a little bit better, but she was conscious of the fact that no one at the castle really loved her, besides her father, Hak, and Soo-Won. Hak's kiss just leaves her confused and baffled. This is the main reason why she can't grasp Hak's true feelings for her. She just doesn't understand that his feelings are romantic rather than platonic. Another part of reason could be that Yona's relationship with Hak is different than the The Masochism Tango Naruko had with Sasuke. It could be more accurate to say that she doesn't know what a healthy romantic relationship looks/should be like. To be able to love without being dragged down by the pain of that love. Because of this, Yona was oblivious to all the Unresolved Sexual Tension between her and Hak.
- World's Best Warrior: Hak. The reason why Yona wanted him to stay her ally and friend.
- World's Strongest Woman: Naruko was considered this in the past.
