    Rumia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/th06rumia.png

Youkai of Darkness
Rumia

"Is that so~?"

A darkness youkai and stage 1 boss. She wears a ribbon that's actually a magic amulet that she can't touch. She has the ability to envelope her surroundings in darkness, usually by creating a sphere of darkness around herself. Rumia has the distinction of being the first boss in the series to fight using the modern Spell Card rules.

  • Aborted Arc: Rumia's profile noted that the ribbon in her hair is actually an ofuda which she is unable to remove, strongly implying it to be a seal of some kind. ZUN confirmed in the 20th anniversary comments for Embodiment of Scarlet Devil that this was supposed to have led to a reveal of some kind, but as of yet nothing has come of it, and Rumia has been almost entirely relegated to cameos since her first appearence.
  • Biblical Motifs: To appear more menacing and badass, she has her arms fully extended to her sides at all times, imitating a "the saint was crucified" pose when attacking someone. However, it ends up looking more like a childish Bird Run instead.
  • Bird Run: She always has her arms fully extended to make her look more menacing, but instead it looks more like this trope. Marisa herself states it looks more "like someone discovering the decimal system."
  • Casting a Shadow: As implied by her title, she has powers over darkness. ZUN has gone on record saying he deliberately chose a power that sounds more like it belongs to a Final Boss and gave it to a complete idiot.
  • Creepy Child: She’s especially cheerful when talking about eating people or crucifixionnote , and would be a horrible man-eater if she wasn't so incompetent at hunting.
  • Day Hurts Dark-Adjusted Eyes: Rumia complains in Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red that light hurts her eyes. Whether this is simply because her eyes are adjusted to the dark or because light is an innate weakness of hers is unknown, but she's apparently fine with moonlight.
  • The Ditz: Likely the stupidest character in canon, even stupider than resident idiot Cirno. She can't eat anyone because she blinds herself instead of the target every single time.
  • Dumb Blonde: She's blonde and one of the least intelligent youkai in the series.
  • Innate Night Vision: She is stated to be able to see well enough in the darkness to be able to read Aya's newspaper while Aya herself is unable to see pretty much anything at all. However, it is unknown if this is an actual power of hers or if her eyes are merely completely adapted to the dark due to her spending the majority of her time in her bubble of darkness.
  • Leitmotif: Officially, it's "Apparitions Stalk the Night" but she is also heavily associated with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil's stage 1 theme, "A Soul as Red as a Ground Cherry".
  • Mundane Utility: Her personal bubble of darkness occasionally gets used by other youkai and fairies that hate direct sunlight and/or the heat it brings as a shelter on hot days.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Always seen smiling.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Or just lie down next to a tree and wait for the 'thunk' indicating that she has knocked herself out for you.
  • Required Secondary Powers: She usually surrounds herself in a bubble of darkness that even she cannot see through, causing her to spend most of her time crashing into trees. That said, her night vision seems to be better than most people's, as she is able to read a newspaper in total darkness while Aya can't see a thing.
  • To Serve Man: At least in theory. There is no actual evidence for this, and could easily be simply bluster. The expanded universe states she's too moronic to be able to catch any human.
  • Viewer Name Confusion: Her name is often spelled starting with an L: Lumia.
  • Warm-Up Boss: She's the first boss here (and in the Windows Era) and she uses simplistic attacks that give you plenty of breathing room.

    Daiyousei

Daiyousei/Greater Fairy

A fairy who lives at the same lake as Cirno and is the midboss of her stage. Intended as just nameless Mini-Boss, but become unexpectedly popular among fans, and was consequently semi-canonized as Cirno's Recurring Extra best friend.

  • Mini-Boss
  • Nature Spirit: Since she's a fairy, but there's no canon on what aspect of nature she represents.
  • No Name Given: For note, "Daiyousei" is the name fans give her, sometimes shortened to just "Dai" or "Dai-chan". She is not given any names in canon.
    • ZUN has recently used "Daiyousei" as a term for the sunflower-carrying fairy mooks in 100th Black Market; and when asked about Daiyousei posted a blonde-haired fairy instead.
  • Recurring Extra: What her role is in canon. In the manga, she's sometimes seen in the background as one of Cirno's fairy friends, but never with any kind of importance, and never gets any lines.
    • Her only in-game interactions with Cirno are, ironically, hostile. She sides with the Fairies of Light in Great Fairy Wars and even attacks Cirno in the Extra stage after the other fairies have surrendered, alongside Lilly White; suggesting she may not be on such good terms with Cirno after all.
  • Resurrective Immortality: As with all fairies, she quickly revives if killed.
  • Shrinking Violet: Her depiction in Strange and Bright Nature Deity has her act like this, especially around Reimu.
  • Winged Humanoid: Has golden wings on her back.

    Cirno
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/th06cirno.png

Ice Fairy of the Lake
Cirno

"When it comes to me, I am the strongest!"

An ice fairy who can manipulate the cold who lives at the lake surrounding the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and one of the series most persistent sources of comic relief. Her favorite hobby is freezing frogs and watching them thaw. She boasts that she is the strongest fairy of them all, though considering how weak fairies are in general, it gives you a good indication just how bright she is.

Click here to see her Self-Demonstrating Article.

  • Ascended Extra: Was just a random Plot-Irrelevant Villain in her debut, before eventually developing into one of the major recurring characters in the series.
  • Badass Armfold: Her default pose in Hisoutensoku.
  • Badass Boast:
    • Even back then in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, she tried to do this with "I'll cryo-freeze you together with some English beef!".
    • "I'm the strongest!" in Phantasmagoria of Flower View.
    • She tries to do this for each of the six paths in Fairy Wars, each one quite silly:
      • "I'm Cirno! The freezer of crybabies!"
      • "I'm not scared of youkai or gods! I'll show you what "Recklessness is courage" is all about!"
      • "I'm Cirno! The eternal omiwatari!"
      • "I'm an ice fairy who can pound a nail in with a banana! And this unstoppable fairy's gonna win fair and square!"
      • "Nah, I'm fine going solo. I'm strong enough on my ownsome! Breaking three arrows at once should be faster than breaking them one by one!"
      • "I've been going easy on you 'til now, but now I'm gonna get serious! On a night of spring when the cold returns, it's time for you to run out of sake and freeze to death!"
  • Barefoot Loon: She's childish and generally dimwitted and goes barefoot in the Sangetsusei manga, Double Dealing Character, and Hidden Star in Four Seasons. Being a fairy also implies that she can simply fly around so that footwear is not necessary for her. She wears white socks in earlier installments, however, downplaying it.
  • Berserk Button: “The one who says "idiot" is the idiot!”
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: When drawn by Makoto Hirasaka, she has very noticeable eyebrows.
  • Blood Knight: Cirno's dialogue in Great Fairy Wars seems to imply so. It’s taken further in Hidden Star in Four Seasons, where she’s so hopped up on seasonal energy that she decides to try to conquer Gensokyo and pummel anyone who stands in her way.
  • BFS: In Hisoutensoku, she pulls out a large sword made of ice for some of her attacks. Her strongest attack in said game, Ice Clump "Great Crusher", has her strike her opponent with an enormous (and deceptively fast) ice hammer. Deconstructed, as Cirno can't actually wield these weapons and needs gravity to do most of the swinging.
  • Boisterous Weakling: Declares herself to be the strongest fairy. While definitely not far from the truth (Eiki even notes that a fairy with her level of power is dangerous), she is still severely outmatched by any of the main characters, and confrontations rarely end well for her. And as of Legacy or Lunatic Kingdom, her title as "strongest fairy" is seriously challenged by the existence of Clownpiece, something which causes them to quickly become rivals come Visionary Fairies in Shrine.
  • Breakout Character: The main character of Fairy Wars and is on the cover for a second time — a first for anyone who is not Reimu.
  • Break the Haughty: She's shown to be arrogant, and unlucky.
  • Brick Joke: One of Cirno's first attempts at operating a stall failed when she tried to sell shaved ice that had no flavors in them. By the time Chapter 10 of Visionary Fairies in Shrine rolls around, she again starts a shaved ice stand, this time having learned to add flavoring.
  • Butt-Monkey: Cirno's cocky attitude combined with her relatively weak powers and childish incompetence means she often ends up in humiliating situations. Even ZUN himself is not immune, as a page in the manual for Phantasmagoria of Flower View has a screenshot from the game with the different user interface elements labeled with a number, with Cirno, shown as the rival player, labeled ⑨. In the legend below the image, it said:
    1. Player
    2. Score
    3. Health
    ...
  • Close-Range Combatant: In Hisoutensoku, Cirno's melee attacks are very fast and have good Combo potential, while most of her projectiles are either weak or short-ranged. Subverted in that her most effective strategies rely on her keeping momentum to prevent the target from retaliating, as Cirno loses health fast if her opposition can actually hit her at this range.
  • David Versus Goliath:
    • Pretty much any time she's playable and fighting something that isn't another fairy.
    • Reaches the logical extreme when she takes on Marisa again in Fairy Wars and wins. Granted, Marisa was going easy on Cirno, but scoring a victory against the one who prides herself as "the second strongest in Gensokyo".
    • In Hidden Star In Four Seasons, she challenges the powerful goddess Okina Matara using the worst possible moment for a fairy, which prevents Okina from taking her power and booting her out of her realm. She proceeds to defeat the secret deity, one of the Great Sages of Gensokyo (a rank she shares with the likes of Yukari Yakumo), while being powered down. BY COMPLETE ACCIDENT.
  • Day in the Limelight: Main character and only playable character of Fairy Wars, much to the fandom's surprise. She becomes playable again in Hidden Star in Four Seasons.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Although she does have a few moves that would qualify as single-hit nukes, Cirno's (possibly) greatest strength in the fighting games is being able to dish out tiny bits of damage really fast, since her moveset is full of techniques that hit lots of times.
  • De-power: In Chapter 8 of Visionary Fairies in Shrine (shortly after Hidden Star in Four Seasons), she wanders off during the night. A while later, the Three Fairies find her in a snow bank, having returned to her original form and lost her resistance to heat.
  • Determinator: She appears to die every time she gets hit in Fairy Wars, only to return to life unfazed (though the extra stage ultimately reveals that they were playing by spellcard rules the whole time). You only get a Game Over when her motivation to continue bottoms out.
  • The Ditz: She's very immature and childish in mentality. Downplayed and sometimes subverted in her later appearances. While she's still immature, she's sometimes shown to be smarter than most fairies, and was able to explain to Reimu and Marisa during 'Phantasmagoria of Flower View' that flowers of all seasons had bloomed before, but no-one felt it significant. It was.
  • Dumb Muscle: The Three Fairies of Light seem to have this view of Cirno by the time of Visionary Fairies in Shrine, seeing her as a "useful idiot" who can be tricked into helping them out by appealing to her ego.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: It might seem surprising given how integral it became part of her character, but Cirno was not a Fairy in the original Windows trilogy of games, who were at the time strictly generic Mooks, and was in fact directly referred to as a Youkai in her Perfect Cherry Blossom profile. It wouldn't be until Phantasmagoria of Flower View when she'd be first identified as a fairy, and given her Boisterous Weakling personality that she's had ever since.
  • Expy: As explained in Strange Creators of Outer World, her tanned appearance in Hidden Star in Four Seasons is based off of Dark Sakura from the Marvel vs. Capcom series.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • In Strange and Bright Nature Deity, when playing hide and seek with Daiyousei, she fails to notice the Three Fairies behind her, even though they weren't trying to hide themselves. Made worse when it takes Cirno several seconds to realize that someone is talking to her.
    • In Hidden Star in Four Seasons, she repeatedly fails to notice the seasons changing until the stage boss points it out.
  • The Fog of Ages: Like all fairies, she has difficulty remembering what happened a day earlier, let alone years; her From a Single Cell Resurrective Immortality makes it hard to form coherent memories (her literacy is another thing making her an extreme rarity among her race). She can barely remember the events of Phantasmagoria Of Flower View, and can't recall the specifics even when reminded multiple times. Which is fine by her, as long as she gets to do what she does every single day — play, fly, and challenge others to see if she'll win.
    • That said, every now and then, she remembers details far better than nearly everyone else in the cast. The circumstances in Phantasmagoria of Flower View are a glaring example.
  • The Fool: Whenever she is a main character. In Hidden Star In Four Seasons, she sets off with the goal of conquering Gensokyo, and, while she doesn't accomplish that, she manages — by complete accident — to set up the perfect circumstances for her to challenge and defeat secret goddess Okina Matara. Okina muses that Cirno must be brilliant and that her ditziness must be an act, only to be rather stunned when she realizes that she is exactly as dumb as she appears.
  • Fragile Speedster: As a fairy, she's naturally physically much weaker than even humans from the Outside World, but if she keeps her momentum going, she's capable of taking out the likes of Utsuho.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Is basically friends with the Three Fairies of Light, even if they do come to blows from time to time.
  • Harmless Freezing: Averted. About 1/3rd of the frogs she freezes winds up shattering. Interestingly, some frogs can survive being frozen and thawed with no ill effects. It's implied that the ones that shatter are unfortunate victims of Cirno being a klutz with the ice.
  • Heroic RRoD: Okina informs Cirno in her scenario of Hidden Star in Four Seasons that her tan is a physical manifestation of her seasonal energy going out of control, and if it isn't removed, she'll end up being torn apart by it.
  • Hot-Blooded: Ironic given she's an ice fairy, but she is well known for her almost shonen-hero like passion and the ease with which she gets fired up (or iced up, as Clownpiece put it). Unfortunately for her, this also means she is extremely impulsive and rarely thinks through any of her actions.
  • An Ice Person: She's an ice fairy with powers over cold.
  • Idiot Hero: Fairy Wars has her as the protagonist, and as ditzy as always.
  • Large Ham: Cirno in general, but most noticeable in Fairy Wars.
Cirno: This atmosphere... it smells of WAR!
  • Leitmotif: "Beloved Tomboyish Girl"
  • Meaningful Appearance: She picks up a tan come Hidden Star in Four Seasons as a result of the seasonal energy powering her up.
  • More Dakka: For some reason, her perspective ends up creating more bullets than there are normally because that's how she sees them. Presumably this is to emulate Cirno's weakness by making enemies who would normally be absolutely nonthreatening (like the Fairies) into a legitimate threat. Compare Fairy Wars to the other games and you'll realize that Fairy Wars is possibly the hardest game in the entire franchise. And when you decide to get the gold medal for Spell Cards (which involves you not freezing any bullets whatsoever), that may be ZUN's idea of a joke.
  • Nature Spirit: She's an ice fairy.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain:
    • While the Extra Boss tries to shrug off her defeat at the end of Fairy Wars, pointing out that she was holding back a bit, even she has to admit that Cirno is quite a bit more powerful than she expected.
(Regardless, even fairies aren't to be trifled with...)
(Even if I had pulled out my most powerful lasers, she could've been trouble...)
    • Marisa in The Grimoire of Marisa is impressed with Cirno's Perfect Freeze card and how truly unpredictable it is.
  • Odd Name Out: All other (named) fairies have names consisting of two English words. Even Clownpiece, despite the fact that her name is treated as one word. That being said, her name is properly pronounced as "Chiruno", in which the "chiru" presumably stands for "chill".
  • Off with Her Head!: Not herself, though she threatens to do this to Luna via telling her she'll "have [her] head".
  • Outside-the-Box Tactic: Somewhere between Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and Fairy Wars, Cirno realized that she could freeze not just her own bullets, but her opponent's as well, literally stopping them cold. This is especially notable because this lets her stop bullets without needing Bombs, an invaluable skill that very few characters in the series boast.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: She claims to be the strongest of all fairies. While she's certainly strong for her race, normal fairies are low-level cannon fodder mooks, so that doesn't mean much. Then the debut of Clownpiece (a powerful fairy from Hell) further restricted Cirno to being the strongest fairy in Gensokyo.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Cirno is one of the strongest known fairies, and it's made clear in Hisoutensoku that she's also one of the shortest characters in the series, being smaller than both Remilia, who is about a head shorter than pretty much everyone else, and Suika by a few pixels. In Fairy Wars, her sprite is absolutely minuscule, especially when put up in comparison to the other characters. Whether or not her small stature contributes to her Small Name, Big Ego attitude is unknown.
  • Power Incontinence: She constantly cools the air around her, and anyone touching her could get frostbite. The Three Fairies at one point exploit this to use her as a makeshift air conditioner during summer.
  • Power Stereotype Flip: She's way more Hot-Blooded than her ice powers would lead you to believe.
  • Promoted to Playable: She's originally a stage 1 boss who goes on to have reoccurring appearances throughout the main games usually as a mid-boss, along with starring in her own spin off game that makes use of her freezing ability in Fairy Wars, as well as being a playable fighter in Hisotensoku. She eventually makes an appearance as a fully playable character in the mainline game Hidden Star In Four Seasons.
  • Recurring Boss: Originally the stage 2 Boss of The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Cirno reappears as the stage 1 mid-boss of Perfect Cherry Blossom, and again as the stage 1 mid-boss of Double Dealing Character.
  • Resurrective Immortality: As a fairy, she's an embodiment of nature and won't stay dead, reviving quickly after death. Alluded to in her game, Fairy Wars, as having a "Motivation Meter" instead of lives. She seemingly keeps dying until she becomes demotivated and gives up. The last stage reveals she's being hit by explicitly non-lethal spell cards.
  • Shout-Out: As stated in her Tanned Cirno article in Strange Creators of Outer World, her tanned playable version in Hidden Star in Four Seasons is a reference to Dark Sakura and Evil Ryu from the Street Fighter series, as she's corrupted by an outside influence and is going berserk because of it. Also, ZUN treats her like a different character similar to how Evil Ryu is generally treated as a different character to Ryu despite being the same person in-story. Some examples are specifically calling her "Tanned Cirno" when announcing the characters for Hidden Star in Four Seasons), and having a separate article for her in Strange Creators of Outer World.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: She's the self-proclaimed strongest there is, but while she is incredibly powerful by Fairy standards, that is hardly a massive position in the larger structure of Gensokyo.
  • Spin Attack: The descriptions of her attacks in Hisoutensoku.
Ice Kick: Goes in for a flying spin kick while generating ice all around. There's actually no need for the spinkick, but she thinks it's cool.
Cold Body "Super Ice Kick": A spinning kick from the heavens. The longer this attack hits, the more powerful it is, but Cirno gets dizzy after a while. There's really just no reason for her to be spinning...
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: Some of Cirno's attacks in Hisoutensoku have her generate short-lived melee weapons out of ice, though it's noted that she has no idea how to use them.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Cirno's survival instincts are not the greatest, to be blunt. Since Fairies have Resurrective Immortality, however, whatever consequences this sees never stick.
  • Tomboy: As shown in the name of her theme.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Had a pretty big helping of it in Fairy Wars, where she can 1) freeze the enemy's bullets, 2) use the now-harmless bullets as shields, and 3) abuse her Resurrective Immortality to keep on fighting; many beings in Gensokyo have showcased similar abilities, but never all three at once like Cirno can. She's also been warned by the Yama that she's already pushing the power limits meant for fairies.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She always tries to sell various forms of shaved ice whenever a festival pops by. Sometimes she's reasonable, selling sweet bean shaved ice (a popular dessert in Korea), but at least once (Oriental Sacred Place, Chapter 12) she attempted to sell water-flavored shaved ice. Understandably, nobody wanted to buy any.
  • Villain Protagonist: In Hidden Star in Four Seasons, she's turned berserk like all the other fairies, and decides she wants to try taking over Gensokyo with her newfound power following Stage 1. Though, if Perfect Memento in Strict Sense is to be believed, there are some legitimate grievances to be had between fairies and humans, prompting her the support of Larva.
  • Warm-Up Boss: An ironic example considering she's an ice fairy; Cirno is the first midboss in Perfect Cherry Blossom and Double Dealing Character, plus the easiest to take out without getting hit.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Despite being rather weak in the greater scheme of things, Cirno can come up with very clever uses for her powers in combat.
  • Winged Humanoid: She looks human aside from her ice crystal wings. In fact, they're seraph-style ice crystal wings. Given her powers, they fit.
  • With Catlike Tread: When she is playing hide and seek, she spends most of it loudly yelling about how sneaky she is. It even takes her a few seconds to realize that the Three Fairies are talking to her.

    Hong Meiling
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/th06meiling.png

Colorful Rainbow Gatekeeper
Hong Meiling

"You're not allowed past this point!"

Head gate guard and gardener for the Scarlet Devil Mansion and stage 3 boss, a Chinese master of martial arts and physical combat who controls qi to enhance her attacks. Note that Hong is her family name while Meiling is her given name. Unlike the Japanese names, this usually isn't reversed in translation to English, possibly to preserve an element of foreignness.

Exactly what type of youkai she is has never been made clear, though many fans believe her to be a dragon due to the "dragon" character on her hat, being Chinese, and many of her spellcards being weather-themed (as Chinese dragons are strongly associated with weather phenomena.)

  • Anime Chinese Girl: She has a fully Chinese name, wears Chinese-influenced clothing, is a capable martial artist, and her first Boss Subtitles were simply "Chinese Girl".
  • Badass Normal: One of the prevailing theories is that she's a strong fighter, but not so good with magic and therefore horribly outclassed in spell card duels.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: A very capable martial artist, able to turn away all manner of intruders with her bare hands, at least until Reimu and Marisa came along.
  • Captain Ethnic: Even her subtitle in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is simply "Chinese Girl".
  • Close-Range Combatant: In the fighting games. While she does have ranged attacks, their power and/or range are terrible compared to the rest of the cast.
  • Everything's Better with Rainbows: Her main schtick, aside from being Chinese, is her rainbow-colored bullet patterns. Everything she attacks with is full of colors, even in the fighting games.
  • Flash Step: In Hisoutensoku, it takes the form of Brilliance: "Rainbow Brilliance Palm". Given, it's not as fast as many other flash steps out there, since you can still see it. It is, however, fast enough to put her almost instantly behind the opponent after running them through with a heavily-chi-infused palm strike, followed by a Delayed Explosion of rainbow colored lights.
  • Flunky Boss: In Embodiment of Scarlet Devil she's assisted by fairies during her boss fight.
  • Gate Guardian: She guards the gate of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Prone to napping in the afternoon.
  • Jack of All Stats: Her profile in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense says that she has well-rounded abilities rather than specializing in one particular aspect like other youkai, making her have no true strengths but no actual weaknesses.
  • Joke Character:
    • Meiling was added into Immaterial and Missing Power in an official patch. She didn't get a Story Mode route, and it is almost certainly agreed that she is the worst character in the game, due to her terrible bullet spread. She was very good at irritating people, though, as her melee was tricky to read sometimes.
    • Not so in Hisoutensoku: Although her bullets are still not particularly good, her melee's damage and combo ability improved, to the point where she is actually very dangerous in the right hands. Still not top tier, but definitely not bottom.
  • Ki Manipulation: Her main ability is the manipulation of qi, which is probably what allows her to fly as well as shoot danmaku projectiles.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: In her case, the "kung fu" part is played up and the "wizard" is played down. Her danmaku is mediocre, as shown by her being only a stage 3 boss in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and especially her very weak projectiles in the fighting games, but the same games show that she is a monster if she gets up close.
  • Launcher Move: In the fighting games, the Color Sign: Colorful Light Wind Chime spell card is occasionally portrayed as a mild form of the trope, in that Meiling floats upwards to a slight distance while performing it, launching the opponent into the air; when it's not, it's just a ground-level attack that just throws back the opponent. The Ultimate Color: Colorful Light Chaotic Dance spell card, however, is so far always protrayed as a straight, full-fledged example, with Meiling flying at least halfway up the screen and launching the opponent practically all the way to the top.
  • Leitmotif: In Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, she has "Shanghai Alice of Meiji 17" as her official boss fight theme, but she's more associated with her stage theme "Shanghai Teahouse ~ Chinese Tea."
  • Meaningful Name: Her family name, written with the character 紅, means "crimson/scarlet", which is of course part of the "red" theme of her debut game and features prominently in the Japanese name of the Scarlet Devil Mansion (魔館), which by proxy establishes a firm tie to her mistress and the namesake of said Mansion, Remilia Scarlet. It's also homophonous with the name of a type of Chinese dragon (written with the character 虹) that is associated with rainbows, which is probably where she got her title of "Colorful Rainbow Gatekeeper", the "Rainbow"/"Colorful" Theme Naming of several of her spell cards, and the rainbow-colored bullet patterns and fighting-game attacks.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: One of the nicest members of the SDM, Meiling acts rather cold towards Sakuya in chapter 2 of Foul Detective Satori after the maid is revealed as the first murder suspect.
  • Punched Across the Room: In Hisoutensoku, her Red Cannon, Attack Sign: "Roc Fist", and Fiery Attack "Roc Killing Fist". Each is an upward punch that sends the opponent flying at a very sharp upward angle for a good distance. How far they fly depends on the attack. Roc Killing Fist tends to send the opponent completely off-screen for at least three seconds. Fan depictions sometimes give her the "Chuugoku Satsu", a parody of the Shun Goku Satsu (Chuugoku = China).
  • Shout-Out:
    • During her brief time as a playable character in Immaterial And Missing Power, she has variations of Yun's moves.
    • There's a reason why Krizalid is often shipped with Meiling. Why? One of her moves is a rainbow-colored carbon-copy of Krizalid's.
  • Signature Headgear: A green beret adorned with a golden star. The star has the Traditional Chinese character "龍" on it, which is read and pronounced as "lóng" in standard Chinese and means dragon.
  • Statuesque Stunner: While her exact height has not been given, she's one of the tallest female characters in the series.
  • Tornado Move: Her Color Sign: Colorful Light Wind Chime and Ultimate Color: Colorful Light Chaotic Dance spell cards from the fighting games have her create a whirlpool of ki energy around herself before attacking her opponent.

    Koakuma

Koakuma/Little Devil

One of the many lesser youkai found in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Like Daiyousei, she had no name, dialogue, or profile included with the game, and was instead given her descriptive name by fans. The appellation seems to have been adopted by ZUN himself, but it may just be referring to her species.

    Patchouli Knowledge
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/th06patchouli.png

The Unmoving Great Library
Patchouli Knowledge

"You, clothed in red and white! Don't cause problems in my study."

Librarian and tutor for the Scarlet Devil Mansion household, and stage 4 boss. Patchouli is known as the "One-Week Wizard" due to her mastery of the seven elements of the Japanese calendar week. She is indeed a powerful elementalist, but has poor health, which limits her battle prowess.

  • All Your Powers Combined: She regularly combines elements to create new/unique attacks and spells. Philosopher's Stone attacks with five elements at the same time. The remaining two, Sun and Moon, have their own spell cards and are later combined into a different one as well.
  • Ambiguously Christian: Performs a traditional Christian prayer in Silent Sinner in Blue to commemerate the launch of Remilia's rocket.
  • Badass Bookworm: Very intelligent and a master of elemental magic.
  • Black Mage: Fits the bill with her Elemental Powers, and wouldn't be out of place in Final Fantasy.
  • The Cameo: Has shown up in more games than any character other than regular Player Characters, but most of her appearances are very brief or occur only in endings or the manual. Part of this is due to her being a convenient Ms. Exposition for both Marisa and the other members of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
  • Costume Evolution: As confirmed by ZUN, Patchouli's dress initially had no dark purple stripes like in the fighting games; What was seen as stripes on her pajamas in her Embodiment of Scarlet Devil portrait were actually meant to be rumples in her clothes. When Tasofro were designing her sprites in Immaterial and Missing Power, they simply rolled with the idea that her dress had stripes, which has since become the norm in many artist depictions of her.
  • Cute Witch: She's a powerful magic user, but also a cute, sleepy girl.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Canon has this as her default personality. Silent Sinner in Blue has this line when confronting Marisa on not-in-stealing-mode terms.
(on the rocket launch) If something happens to our red-white engine, you just might end up being the spare.
  • Depending on the Artist: Her figure is ambiguous under those robes, so artistic depictions vary from childlike to more mature. Her clothes are also subject to this, as explained in Costume Evolution.
  • Elemental Powers: Invoked. She likes to convert her spells to fit into one of seven different elements, associated with the days of the Japanese week, earning her the title "The One-Week Wizard."
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: She has the permanent version in Oriental Sacred Place.
  • Hikikomori: Patchouli rarely ever leaves the library in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Before the events of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, she apparently never left the library for more than a century.
  • In-Series Nickname: Remilia is known to call her "Pache" (usually translated as "Patchy").
  • Kaleidoscope Hair: For some reason, in her appearance as an Extra Stage midboss in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, her sprite is modified to have indigo hair rather than purple.
  • Lady of Black Magic: A dark, inquisitive, and intelligent youkai magician as well as a powerful elementalist.
  • Leitmotif: "Locked Girl ~ The Girl's Secret Room"
  • Long-Range Fighter: In the fighting games she's one of the most proficient projectile slingers. Most of her close-range attacks tend to do a lot of Knock Back, providing her with a decent counter to opponents closing to melee range.
  • Mage Species: She was born a youkai magician.
  • Magic Librarian: She's a witch who's spent about a hundred years in a library.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: A purple-haired youkai magician.
  • More Dakka: Try playing against her in the fighting games on Lunatic.
  • Motor Mouth: This is noted as one of her characteristics in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense. While there's no explicit example of it, presumably she chants quickly for many of her spells, and according to Marisa Patchouli has to be capable of chanting two spells at once for a few of her spellcards.
  • Odd Friendship: While it's hard to see how she has anything in common with Remilia, they do seem to complement each other and have one of the few canonically defined friendships in the series (as opposed to master-servant, sisters, or some other kind of specific relationship).
(rating the cast of Immaterial and Missing Power) "Danmaku would be Remi. Well, I suppose it was less 'danmaku' and more 'body slam', so it feels a little like cheating, but that's part of what makes her interesting."
  • Philosopher's Stone: Apparently has successfully created it, as she uses a spellcard invoking its power in the Extra Stage.
  • Pre-Final Boss: Is the Extra Stage midboss.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She's a gifted spellcaster with purple hair and eyes, with her dress having some of that color.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She looks like a young girl but is really more than a century old.
  • Recurring Boss: Is the Stage 4 boss and reappears as the Extra Stage midboss.
  • Ridiculous Procrastinator: Gloomily admits in Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth that she wanted to exercise and get in better shape, so she sat down and started researching the best exercise methods...
Pachouli: —and I've been researching the most effective method of exercising for xx years already.
Reisen: That's not effective at all. Though I do understand how you feel.
  • Shout-Out: One of her alternate skillcards in SWR and Hisoutensoku is called Emerald City.
  • Signature Headgear: A mob cap with a golden crescent moon on it. It emphasizes the pajamas-look she's got going.
  • The Smart Guy: Though perhaps Too Clever by Half considering she cares for little else besides knowledge.
  • The Snark Knight:
    • Patchouli is at least a little sarcastic and cynical, especially in her lines regarding Sakuya in Subterranean Animism or Immaterial and Missing Power, but she's nevertheless a good and caring friend of Remilia.
    • She also has a hard time taking Alice's doll magic seriously, calling it "playing house".
  • Spectacular Spinning: Non-Directional Laser, though Marisa significantly upped the rotations after she copied it from Patchouli.
  • Squishy Wizard: Genius spellcaster, but she's still a frail ill girl.
  • Throw the Book at Them: Even her melee attacks are usually just spells thrown at close range, but when she does actually hit enemies, she uses her book. This is surprisingly powerful, considering how physically weak she is.
  • What, Exactly, Is Her Job?: Her job in the Scarlet Devil Mansion is "to solve and create problems". What exactly this entails is a bit sketchy. It appears that she lives at the mansion mostly because she's Remilia's friend. She's also capable of curbing Flandre's rampages by summoning rainstorms that keep her from leaving the mansion.

    Sakuya Izayoi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/th06sakuya.png

The Perfect and Elegant Maid
Sakuya Izayoi(?)

"Your time is mine."

Chief Maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and a recurring secondary heroine. Despite being the leader of the maids at the Scarlet Devil Mansion, Sakuya usually has to do all of the work herself because the fairy maids are completely useless. Uses knives and time manipulation to fight and do maid tasks. Much of Sakuya's origin is left to speculation, although it is implied that she may not be human and "Sakuya" may not be her real name.

  • Adaptational Curves: Immaterial and Missing Power gives Sakuya a noticeably larger bust size than in other games, which resulted in various memes about her using breast padding.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Done often in-universe: Akyuu notes there are a godawful lot of theories about her and her background.
  • Ambiguously Human: She's presumably human, but it's implied that she's far older than she appears, though she's refused immortality through consuming the Hourai elixir or becoming a vampire, leading to the conclusion that she uses her time powers to remain young.
  • Animal Motifs: Heavily associated with dogs, due to her her Red Baron title "The Dog of the Devil," which comes from her ferocity and loyalty to Remilia. No less than than three bosses in her playable debut refer to her as such, including Yuyuko's "Dog of the Devil" line.
Lyrica Prismriver: Dog meat, dog meat~
    Sakuya: Human meat!
  • Badass Arm-Fold: Often sports one in the fighting games.
  • Badass Boast: From Double Dealing Character
Kagerou: I wonder, can you defeat me?
Sakuya: Yes, I believe I can.
  • Berserk Button: She doesn't take well to Tenshi implying she's stupid.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Sakuya is usually polite, elegant, and very calm. However, if you try her patience, she may do terrible things to you with her knives.
  • Big Good: For any game where Sakuya is a playable character. If Sakuya is investigating an incident, she's usually doing so at Remilia's command.
  • Blade Spam: While she mostly relies on Flechette Storm, the fighting games give her a melee version with her Soul Sculpture and Inscribe Red Soul spells.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Akyuu says she's "cold-hearted" towards humans (besides the main cast) despite presumably being one, and Eiki even describes it as her greatest character flaw during Phantasmagoria of Flower View.
  • The Bus Came Back: Is playable in Unconnected Markeeters' after her last playable appearance in Double Dealing Character eight years prior.
  • Clock Tower: Her stage in the fighting games. It's the Scarlet Devil Mansion's tower, to be precise.
  • Colour-Coded Timestop: Whenever she freezes time, it's shown as darkened in the shooting games, monochrome in the fighting games, and photo-negative in Silent Sinner in Blue.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Akyuu describes a common rumour that she was a vampire hunter that was defeated and taken in by Remilia.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Loyal beyond question to Remilia Scarlet, to the point she'd stop at nothing to protect her. However, she regains some humanity after seeing Reimu defeat Remilia and, afterward, the two chatter as if nothing ever happened.
  • Depending on the Artist: Just how busty she is varies by work.
  • The Ditz: She has her moments (possibly as a result of her improbable fighting skills for her alleged age), such as trying to buy a broken teacup to replace the one Remilia broke, mistaking ordinary crows for crow tengu (or their underlings), and opening a window while in space (the last one may be justifiable, assuming she's been in Gensokyo for long enough to miss the scientific advancements in regards to space). And apparently not understanding the meaning of the word "mastermind".
  • Easy-Mode Mockery: Performs a highly literal form of it if you beat her on easy mode in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. It basically amounts to "Ok, Ok, you beat me. But I'm not letting you go on to Remilia, since you aren't even playing on normal difficulty! Come back when you've practiced some more." Game Over.
  • Enigmatic Minion: There's little to no information on her past before she entered Remilia's service.
  • Expy: The original blade-throwing maid in Touhou is Yumeko, from Mystic Square; who also happens to serve a 'devil' and is the 5th stage boss. And if we branch out into Seihou, there's Muse, who looks like this.
  • Fantastic Time Management: Often uses her time manipulation power to speed up housework.
  • Fights Like a Normal: The only character in the series who never fights with energy blasts, instead relying exclusively on physical weapons and using her powers only for support purposes.
  • Final Boss: If you're playing on Easy Mode, she's the last boss faced in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.
  • Flash Step: Can do this in the fighting games.
  • Flechette Storm: She even provides the page picture. In extreme cases, her knives can fill the entire screen.
  • Fluffy Tamer: Thinks the Chupacabra in Forbidden Scrollery is cute, and easily handles its speed with her time stop when taking it back to the Scarlet Mansion to be a pet.
  • The Gambler: In the fighting games, her "Vanishing Everything" move is a teleport where "she leaves a card behind, probably to make it look like her own kind of magic". Fanworks often depict Sakuya holding cards or being skilled at poker, and extend her Nay Theism to a belief in "making her own luck".
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: Hand Waved by ZUN saying that she regularly stops time and picks up all her knives to throw them again. Doesn't explain how she can have hundreds of knives on the screen at once, though her Required Secondary Powers may answer that.
  • Knife-Throwing Act: Her entry in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense states that she can hit a fairy maid with an apple on her head right between the eyes from a hundred feet away.
  • Lady of War: She's called "The Perfect and Elegant Maid" for a reason.
  • Leitmotif: Associated equally with both "Lunar Clock ~ Luna Dial" and "Flowering Night".
  • Multiple-Choice Past: Nothing is known about how she came to work for Remilia, and "Sakuya Izayoi" isn't even her real name. Perfect Memento in Strict Sense offers several in-universe theories about her background (the most popular being "vampire hunter"), with the note that it's likely none of them are actually true. ZUN once said that he would reveal Sakuya's past in a future book, but it's been over a decade since then.
  • Mundane Utility:
    • Hey, you'd be a perfect maid too if you could just stop time to do your work instantly. Stopping time supplies another benefit according to Embodiment of Scarlet Devil's afterword — dust won't be raised, thus making cleaning more efficient.
    • She also uses time-acceleration to mature wine quickly, and to acquire out-of-season foodstuffs. For instance, Remilia's favourite cake flavouring is bamboo flowers. Most species of bamboo normally bloom only once every 50 to 100 years.
  • Mysterious Past: No official explanation has ever been given for who or what Sakuya is, how she gained her powers, or why she works as a maid for the Scarlet Mansion. More than that, she even changed her original name after Remilia employed her and bestowed a new name onto her.
  • Mythology Gag: One of her skins in the fighting games is based off Ruukoto from the PC-98 era.
  • Nay-Theist: In Immaterial and Missing Power, Reimu asks her to give a donation to her offertory box, so she may please the gods and have good luck and their blessing, but Sakuya tells Reimu she doesn't believe in the gods (in the sense that she doesn't need their help to make her own way).
  • Ninja Maid: Knife-throwing time-stopping serial killer illusionist ninja maid to be precise.
  • Pinball Projectile: In the fighting games many of Sakuya's spellcards behave this way, but her Light Speed "C. Ricochet" is just ridiculous.
  • Power-Up Magnet: Sort of. When playing as Sakuya in the shooting games, Power-Up items fall more slowly, making them easier to collect.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: While in previous games she'd only worn short white socks, she wears black tights in Double Dealing Character, fitting with her "perfect and elegant maid" image.
  • Recurring Boss: Is the Stage 5 Boss and reappears as the Stage 6 midboss.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Had red eyes in her first appearance and generally blue afterwards. Scarlet Weather Rhapsody has her eyes turning red when she uses some of her more powerful moves, making this trope particularly literal.
  • The Renfield: A presumably human servant to a vampiric mistress, and the only human in the Scarlet Devil Mansion, who serves so faithfully she's sometimes derogatorily called Remilia's dog by other characters. Her duties are heavily implied to include unsavory things like bringing Remilia victims to feed on and preparing meals out of human flesh and blood for Remilia and her sister (it is canon that such meals are served at the mansion and Sakuya is the only maid that would be competent enough to prepare them). Unusually for this trope though, she is not portrayed negatively, being refined and elegant in contrast to the usual bug-eating creeps and harboring seemingly no delusions, and being devoted yet not sycophantic, even lightly chiding Remilia on some occasions, something Remilia often reciprocates. Remilia herself seems to treat Sakuya as a trusted right hand rather than a disposable minion.
  • Reverse Shrapnel:
    • Her Killer Doll spell card, when used by the player.
    • Same thing with her Phantasmic Killer spell card, except different - the knives from this spell card completely leave the screen before coming back to skewer your opponent.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Only showed up in Perfect Cherry Blossom. Of course, it was winter for the whole game.
  • Serial Killer: There's a definite serial killer theme with her spell cards, such as Jack the Ripper and Another Murder.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Both her time stopping skills and her use of knives are a reference to Dio Brando of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and the fighting games give her similar poses to him as well. In her first appearance she even had a spell card named Illusion World "The World", after DIO's Stand "The World". And while she might not be a vampire like DIO, she certainly is very closely associated with two (one of whom even quotes Dio's "Do you remember how many times you have eaten bread?" line).
    • It's also worth noting that Jack the Ripper (referenced in some of Sakuya's spell cards) appeared in Part 1 of the series as one of Dio's minions, and his fighting style allowed him to throw knives in every direction at once.
  • Silver Has Mystic Powers: Her knives are said to be made of silver, the better to fight Youkai.
  • Space Master: An odd case where this is actually a secondary power. As time and space are inextricably linked, Sakuya is able to alter the mansion's interior. In addition to helping with her maid duties, this is also why the stages that make up the latter half of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil are much larger than one would expect from simple rooms and corridors.
  • Spectral Weapon Copy: Due to her Time Master powers, she can use them to fire time-displaced versions of her knives along with the original.
  • Spread Shot: In unfocused mode her attacks usually cover a very wide spread but don't deal a lot of damage.
  • Stage Magician: A number of her spell cards have this theme and her profile says that "Deceitless sleight-of-hand is her pride".
  • Supreme Chef: According to the manual for Perfect Cherry Blossom, Sakuya is incredibly good at cooking.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Perfect Memento in Strict Sense directly states that Remilia's hiring policy for the subordinate fairy maids is quantity over quality — and fairies who can accomplish even Cirno's (human eight-year-old level) abilities are incredibly rare. They are capable of work, but it's only because of Sakuya that anything is able to get properly done.
  • Temporal Duplication: Her "Time Paradox" attack from the fighting games has Sakuya call upon herself from a few seconds into the future to slash at her opponent. If the doppleganger hits, Sakuya does the exact same move as her future self... if the clone misses the attack, however, Sakuya doesn't follow up. According to ZUN's description of the attack, she is able to defy the actions of her future self by creating an all new alternate timeline.
  • Time Master: Sakuya has numerous time related abilities at her disposal. For example, with her "Deflation World" spellcard, Sakuya pulls both the future and past versions of each knife she throws into the present, in effect forming lasers made out of knives.
  • Time Stands Still: Sakuya's most well-known application of her Time Mastery is freezing time. However, in Wild and Horned Hermit Chapter 35, Sakuya explains that she actually can't stop time for other people; she just moves at extreme speeds (with no mass) so that it seems she's able to stop time... This is arguably a semantic difference however, comparable to saying that while she cannot slow down the universal flow of time until it grinds to a complete stop, she's still able to speed up her own personal flow of time until she moves at infinite speed.
  • To Serve Man: Not that she eats humans herself, but the meals she makes for Flandre are stated to have been from live humans. Necessarily Evil, of sorts, as Flandre herself can't rein in her own power enough to avoid vaporizing them before she can drink from them.
  • Undying Loyalty: She's forever loyal to Remilia but not literally, however, as giving up her mortality is apparently the one thing she isn't willing to do for her mistress.
  • Vague Age: Akyuu writes, "She claims to be in her late teens, but this is unlikely judging by her refined manner and the level of her abilities. Rather, she seems to be a human who has been living for hundreds of years."note  Her profile in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil also refers to her as "10-20". Also, in Imperishable Night, Eirin's profile mentions her being surprised to see Sakuya, despite the fact that Eirin shouldn't have met anyone outside of Eientei for the last thousand years or so.
  • Vampire Hunter: The most popular theory on what she was before falling into Remilia's service was that she used to hunt vampires, according to Akyuu. It is notable that Sakuya uses silver knives, silver being a substance vampires are weak to.
  • Villainous Friendship: The exact details of their relationship aren't certain, but she and Remilia are shown to have a very close bond beyond their professional relationship of maid and mistress. Their campaign in Imperishable Night even has them playfully bantering and teasing each other.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Downplayed, but the fact that she and Remilia get quite a bit of playful ribbing in at each other during "Imperishable Night" speaks volumes as to how close they are underneath their professional relationship.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Sakuya's fighting style tends to rely on technique, sleight of hand and large numbers of attacks over raw power. In the shooting games she tends to have a weak but very wide Spread Shot while unfocused, respectable damage while focused, and mechanics which help in going for high scores. In Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Soku she has weak normal moves but powerful spell cards, and is good at maintaining pressure on her opponent long enough to use them.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Has explicitly told Remilia that she is loyal to her until the day that she dies a natural death, but that she does not want to be a Hourai immortal or a vampire. However, if Akyuu is to be believed, her "natural death" will probably not come for a long time yet (being a Time Master does that). Especially if she's old enough for Eirin to have met her over a thousand years ago, yet is still physically equivalent to 20-something years old. Sakuya dying or being prevented from dying is a very common theme in fanworks.

    Remilia Scarlet
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/th06remilia.png

The Scarlet Devil
Remilia Scarlet

"The moon tonight is red. You will know death."

Vampiric mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and Final Boss of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. She is the source of the mist that blotted out the sun, because sunlight is harmful to her. (It turns out she can just use a parasol, though.) Feared by many youkai, she is incredibly vain and proud despite her relatively low position in the hierarchy of Gensokyo, (falsely) claiming to be a descendant of Vlad Tepes himself and is very open about her being one of the few youkai that still eat humans, though she rarely takes enough blood to kill them.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her hair is pale blue, verging on white when ZUN draws her. The fighting games give her purple hair.
  • The Artifact: Remilia and her associated Cast Herd are very much remnants of when Touhou was primarily a farcical riff on otaku-culture popular at the time, rather than a more concrete setting built around Japanese myth and folklore. Consequently, she has no real backstory or relations to the larger setting ZUN developed in later works, and while she does appear from time to time has been kept mostly Out of Focus since 2009.
  • Badass Boast: "I'm Lady Remilia, the strongest, fastest creature on Earth", from Silent Sinner in Blue. That's quite extreme even for a Touhou character and her travel companions immediately make fun of it. While probably exaggerated, it may not be as far-fetched as it seems, given that vampires are said to be one of the most powerful types of devils, with strength comparable to that of oni, and speed comparable to that of tengu.
  • Battle Aura: The fighting games reveal she is capable of manifesting a blood red aura, which she can use to attack her enemies in different ways. For example, creating infinitely stretching, explosive chains.
  • Benevolent Boss: Despite occasional childish tendencies, Remilia is shown to be consistently nice to employees of Scarlet Devil Mansion - treating Sakuya, Patchouli and Meiling in a friendly manner, and never punishing any of her servants beyond scolding them. Perfect Memento in Strict Sense states that her servants are allowed to leave at any time (yet most end up staying), while in Strange and Bright Nature Deity she allows her maids to relax out of consideration for their mental health.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Childishness and lame names for spellcards aside, Remilia is one of the most dangerous youkai in Gensokyo to the point of prompting the Spell Card system to be made to regulate future disputes. Plus, aside from her immense power, she is repeatedly shown to be very observant and intelligent when she wants to be.
  • Blood Knight: Her "rampaging however she pleased" to the point even other youkai were sick of it is outright stated to be the cause of the Spellcard Rules in the Who's Who artbook; suggesting that Remilia was quite violent before the rules came into effect. That same artbook then states she immediately caused the Scarlet Mist incident just so she could try the new combat rules out herself.
  • Bloody Murder: Grimoire of Marisa reveals that she can control and use blood to attack in some of her spell cards. Blood is amazing!
  • Brick Joke: In Curiosities of Lotus Asia and Imperishable Night Remilia denies that she sleeps in a coffin, saying they're for dead people. Seven years later Remilia's bedroom makes its first manga appearance, containing a four-poster bed... with a coffin on it.
  • Bullying a Dragon: As a vampire Remilia has a lot of the weaknesses vampires are known to have, but Akyuu's article for her explicitly warns the reader to not even try to exploit them. Remilia cannot be killed normally, and the only thing that would be accomplished is pissing off a powerful centuries old vampire. This would be after somehow managing to get past the likes of Meiling, Patchouli, and Sakuya who are themselves no slouches.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She may look and occasionally act like a bored child, but Remilia is a highly intelligent and powerful youkai who's considered one of the Gensokyo authorities for good reason.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: In Marisa's scenario, as well as a Shout-Out to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
Marisa: So, how many times have you drank blood?
Remilia: Do you remember how many times you've eaten bread?
Marisa: Thirteen. I prefer Japanese food.
  • The Chessmaster: She can be quite the planner when she commits herself to it. In both Immaterial and Missing Power and Scarlet Weather Rhapsody she immediately deduced the culprit and manipulated the events of both games to ensure Reimu or someone else would see to it that it was resolved. She also notably figured out what Yukari's full plan was pretty early on in Silent Sinner in Blue, something not even Eirin was able to accomplish.
  • Chuunibyou: Despite being very powerful already, Remilia tends to hype up how cool she is to the point where it comes across as silly. In particular, it's suggested that her "power to manipulate fate" is something she made up so that she can avoid admitting when she lost.
  • Creepy Child: While Touhou artwork is notably vague, Remilia looks and acts like she is in her early teens at most - this does not make her any less dangerous to cross. The "creepy" part is downplayed, though, with her sister generally being the more unsettling of the two.
  • Cross Attack: She has two attacks that involve creating a giant energy cross from her own body. Grimoire of Marisa says that there is really no deep meaning behind it as the cross is simply formed due of her spreading her arms while doing the spellcard.
  • Deflector Shields: In the fighting games, her Parasol of Prettiness doubles as a temporary shield that can block anything for a few seconds.
  • Detachment Combat: She can dissolve herself into a potentially unlimited swarm of bats.
  • The Dreaded: According to her original profile, her "charisma" mainly comes from the fear both humans and other youkai have of her.
  • Ex-Big Bad: She starts off as the main antagonist of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and sticks around afterwards, but is no longer causing trouble now that she's opted to simply use a parasol whenever she goes outside.
  • Failure Gambit: Some sources suggest she intended to lose during the Scarlet Mist incident and that the whole thing was a ploy to get Sakuya to make friends outside the mansion.
  • Fake Special Attack: The "ability to manipulate fate" is such a subtle and vaguely-defined power that Flandre apparently thinks it's not even real. According to her, Remilia made it up to make it look like she is always in control. Certainly wouldn't be out of character for her, but it's also possible Flandre just doesn't know any better.
  • Famous Ancestor: She claims that Dracula was her ancestor, but ZUN says she's bluffing. Since Remilia is one of the only Touhou characters whose exact age is known (she was born in 1503), we know that she was born just 27 years after Vlad Tepes' death. If we presume he became the vampire Dracula at the exact time history recorded his death, that would mean she'd have to be very closely related to him indeed if her claim had been true. Thus, if she'd bothered to do the research, Remilia could have made her lie more impressive by claiming to be "Dracula's daughter."
  • Final Boss: Because she's the stage 6 boss of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, she's the final hurdle in that game.
  • Flash Step: Her Demon Lord Walk move lets her disappear for a quick moment and smack the opponent if they're close enough. Her dash mechanics in the fighting games are also different from those of other characters - rather than moving continuously in one direction she makes a quick hop whenever the button is pressed.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Following her rudimentary Heel–Face Turn. She's known for being a "light eater" who doesn't kill people when she feeds.
  • From a Single Cell: Her weaknesses are partially offset by the fact that she can regenerate, even if there's only a little bit of her left.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Most of her spellcards' names try too hard to be dramatic and awe-inspiring with the words "night", "demon", "devil", "blood", "fate" and other such evil buzzwords being used quite liberally. The ones that don't... just plain suck, like Demon [Remilia Stretch] or, we kid you not, Scarlet Devil [Scarlet Devil]Note.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Her eyes glow brightly when she uses spellcards in the fighting games.
  • Guest Fighter: One of the playable Touhou characters in Nendoroid Generation.
  • Healing Factor: She can regenerate even if most of her body is destroyed, as long as about one of the bats she splits into survives. Considering she can spawn an unlimited number of bats, she might as well be able to regenerate From a Single Cell. When she tried to touch the incomplete Moon rocket in Silent Sinner in Blue, her hand was almost completely charred away, and she healed it back to normal without a second thought.
  • Hellish Pupils: Common in fanart. In canon however, her pupils seem to change depending on her mood as seen in her portraits in the fighting games or in Foul Detective Satori.
  • I Know You Know I Know: In Silent Sinner in Blue, when Ran tells Remilia that Yukari is planning to invade the Moon, Remilia immediately starts looking for a way to get there before Yukari — which was exactly what Yukari expected her to do. Turns out Remilia eventually realised this but didn't care.
  • I Meant to Do That: According to Flandre, Remilia's "fate manipulation powers" aren't real - she just tries to look cooler by claiming random things to have been part of her plan all along.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Though many Touhou characters exhibit this trope, Remilia exemplifies it, impetuous, selfish, and frequently doing things purely for her own amusement. She may have centuries of wisdom, but she also still has a childish desire to stay entertained. ZUN notes that "Creatures of her kind forfeit their growth and maturity in exchange for eternal life. In other words, she can live forever because she never grows up."
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • She's known as The Scarlet Devil because she's a light but messy eater - she doesn't drain all of a person's blood when she feeds, but her dress is usually stained red afterwards.
    • Patchouli calls her "Remi".
  • It Amused Me: In Silent Sinner in Blue, she realized that Yukari was trying to manipulate her into attacking the moon, but went along with it anyway simply for fun.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Remilia can be incredibly arrogant and haughty, but she does deeply care about Sakuya and Patchoulli as her friends.
  • Kill It with Water: Like her sister (Flandre), Remilia is weak to flowing water, including rain.
  • Large Ham: Whenever she's embracing her dramatic side she tends to play up her vampiric nature.
  • Leitmotif: "Septette for the Dead Princess"
  • Life Drain: In the fighting games, Remilia has this in the form of "Vampire Kiss", a special attack. Also made into a status effect, of all things. "Vampire Of The Millenium" will grant this power on you for 10 seconds for all your attacks, but will also lower your defense by 10%.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Remilia has boasted that vampires are as powerful as oni and as fast as tengu, a claim which seems entirely accurate. She is less eager to point out that they have lots of easily-exploited weaknesses to compensate.
  • Lost in Translation: What the West knows as the black tea is called red/scarlet tea in the tea's birthplace of China, and consequently in Japan; it even uses the same kanji as her game (紅), hence why she is so often seen drinking tea.
  • Maid Corps: She has one. Apart from Sakuya, though, it's composed entirely of fairies, meaning they don't get much actual work done.note  Presumably it's just to show off.
  • Master of All: From Perfect Memento in Strict Sense:
"Vampires have tremendous physical abilities and magical power: they are able to uproot a thousand-year-old tree single-handedly, to run through the human village within the blink of an eye, to summon many devils with a single word, to turn into bats or even mist to intrude anywhere they please, and they can recover within a single night even when their body is blown away, so long as their head is intact. Some youkai have abilities to this level of power, but only vampires are known to possess all of them."
    • Strange Creators of Outer World states that before the Spellcard rules she was rampaging however she pleased to the point even other youkai got sick of it; suggesting they were powerless to stop her due to her abilities.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Her theme is called "Septette for the Dead Princess". She's not a princess, nor dead, and the song isn't even a septette.
  • No-Sell: Like most final bosses, her last spell card is immune to bombs. If you do try to bomb her during her final spell, she turns into a swarm of bats and avoids any damage.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: More like Obfuscating Ignorance. In general, she prefers to just have fun or do things she finds interesting even if they're harder or just plain nonsensical:
    • In Silent Sinner In Blue, she figured out on her own that she was being used by Yukari as a decoy, but played along anyway.
    • In both Immaterial and Missing Power and Scarlet Weather Rhapsody she figured out profile information for both the incident culprits fairly quickly. In the former, she noticed Suika's presence and was aware of her involvement all along; in her story, Suika directly calls her out on knowing about her but feigning ignorance in hopes of "a human" (likely Reimu) noticing on their own. note  In the latter, she figured out that Tenshi was in a place where it would be impossible for her to avoid the sun, so in truth her whole scenario is basically her having Sakuya drag various people to the mansion to kill time while Sakuya learns facts of the incident in doing so. Her last opponent is none other than Yukari, who summarizes Remilia's whole MO to her face while said vampire keeps playing dumb right up until they fight, after which Yukari agrees to go handle it on Remilia's behalf. note  This also means she was trolling Reisen, who had gone there earlier to consult with her only to get beat up.
  • Odd Friendship: Good friends with Patchouli, somehow.
  • Ojou: She's a rich girl who lives in a huge mansion with lots of servants. Although while she does have a mansion and servants, it is unclear exactly how rich the Scarlets are. None of the mansion's inhabitants seem to be getting paid anything, and anyways there are not that many ways for Remilia to flaunt any possible wealth in Gensokyo.
  • One-Man Army: Implied. Being a vampire already makes her a Master of All, but considering that the reason the Spell Card rules were put in place was because none of the other youkai could stop her from rampaging, plus the fact that everyone in Gensokyo is powerful in their own right, then it really says something about how formidable Remilia is when not playing by the rules.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Vampires in Touhou are classified as a sub-species of devils (悪魔, akuma) and share the same bean weakness as oni.
  • Parasol of Prettiness:
    • She's known to have one to protect herself from sunlight, and it shows up in some of the game's endings. Present in the latter fighting games, where it acts as a temporary shield.
    • And in up-to-date Hisoutensoku, having one parasol in your deck allows her to fight outdoors. Without this, her battle fields are restricted.
    • Back to Immaterial and Missing Power, she can only appear in night stages, even if you select a day stage.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Although she's well known for her arrogance, Akyuu states that she does have a kinder side. During one incident a human from the village was severely injured, but was allowed to stay and recuperate in the Scarlet Devil Mansion until they were well enough to leave.
    • She's also good friends with Patchouli and has a close bond with Sakuya.
  • Psycho Pink: Her dress and her mob cap are light pink and she's the main antagonist of the sixth game.
  • Public Domain Artifact: Has an attack named after Odin's spear Gungnir. Remi's is an energy spear made of danmaku.
  • Punched Across the Room: Archdemon: "Remilia Stretch". Fighting games. 1 second charge up. Get hit by this, and you can say good-bye to about half your life bar.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She's a powerful fighter who has purple hair in the fighting games.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Remilia was born in 1503, making her 500 years old at the time of the game's release. Her apparent age varies Depending on the Artist (ZUN's official art is too simplified to really say) but she's never drawn looking older than early teens at most.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She's a force to be reckoned with, her eyes are red, and she's responsible for blocking out the sun.
  • Redundancy: Remilia named one of her strongest attacks (we're not joking) Scarlet Devil [Scarlet Devil]. ...Wow.
  • The Reveal: ZUN revealed that the vampire in Reimu's Perfect Memento in Strict Sense profile who caused a major incident before the spell card system was indeed Remilia Scarlet. ZUN also adds that the Scarlet Mist incident was partly a pretext in order for Remilia to use the newly established spell card system as soon as possible.
  • Royal Brat: Pretty classy outwardly, but her attitude can be as childish as her appearance. In Silent Sinner in Blue, she even has a baby booster seat complete with a small table for her own personal use in the rocket ride to the moon.
  • Secret-Keeper: Presumably the only other person apart from maybe Flandre who knows the exact details of Sakuya's past and how she entered into service with her.
  • Shout-Out:
    • References Dio's talk with Zeppeli in Phantom Blood while talking with Marisa.
    • It's also worth noting that her "fate manipulation" and association with a shade of red brings King Crimson to mind.
    • Her Demon Lord Cradle move in the fighting games is very similar to Demitri Maximoff's Demon Cradle move, down to the name.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Compared to her younger sister Flandre, she's much more calm and collected. Not that that's saying much.
  • Signature Headgear: A mob cap tied with a red ribbon. What's more is that Remilia can make mob caps look dignified.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Broadly speaking, as she is the Final Boss, but outside of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil she doesn't have much presence and has been pretty Out of Focus since 2009, where she was a playable character in Touhou Hisoutensoku. That said, it turns out that her wanton rampaging was the reason the Spell Card system which defines the Windows Era of games was implemented. Not her with the other residents of the Scarlet Mansion, not even her and Flandre, only her.
  • Spin Attack: A considerable number of her physical attacks involve spinning. 'Course, those tend to be her heavier hitting ones too.
  • Superpower Lottery:
    • The ability to manipulate fate is... odd, to say the least. This ability could potentially make her easily one of the most powerful beings in Gensokyo, since everything would happen precisely how she wants to. However, it mostly seems like she is limited to only giving destiny subtle nudges, if even that - Flandre seems to think she just made her power up.
    • Apart from fate manipulation, the other powers Remilia has as a vampire include Super-Strength, Super-Speed matching that of a tengu, and an extraordinary Healing Factor.
  • Sweet Tooth: She adds a lot of sugar to her tea, at least in Strange and Bright Nature Deity.
  • The Turret Master: Her shot type in Imperishable Night. She plants her turrets when focusing, then recalls them when unfocusing again.
  • Use Your Head: Fond of using head-first body tackles on her enemies in the fighting games. Notable because she will move at great speeds when doing this.
  • Vague Age: It's not exactly clear when Remilia underwent her vampire conversion and the art leaves her physical age ambiguous. She's been portrayed as being anything from in her tweens to her teenage years.
  • Vampire Lolita Archetype: Remilia is the first and most well-known example. Ruling as the mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, she's a 500-year-old childlike vampire who controls fate and is known as the Scarlet Devil as when she feeds, the blood of her victims stains her dress scarlet. She claims to be descended from Vlad III Dracula, but it's a blatant lie.
  • Vampire Procreation Limit: Downplayed. Her bites may cause light-headedness, but are far from fatal or soul-draining, thanks to her weak appetite.
  • Vampires Are Rich: Debatable. She does own a large mansion in her namesake and tries to project the image of an upper-class lady, but it doesn't seem like she's actually paying any of her fairy maids or even Sakuya.
  • Vampire Bites Suck: Apparently Remilia is quite messy when she drinks, spilling much more blood than she needs, hence her being known as the "Scarlet Devil" as the blood tends to get all over her dress.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: She is capable of shapeshifting into a bat.
  • Weakened by the Light: Is weak to sunlight, like many vampires.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: She's weak to sardine heads, shattered holly branches, and roasted soybeans. The last one might come from the fact that the Japanese name for vampires roughly means "blood-sucking oni", with oni often being weak to them in the folklore.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: Her ability to manipulate fate, although there is no explanation whatsoever for how it works, other than some brief speculation by Akyuu that she changed Sakuya's fate by changing her name. It's so vague, in fact, even In-Universe her own sister Flandre thinks Remilia's just making it up to look cool and save face.
  • Winged Humanoid: She would be able to pass herself off as a human if it weren't for her bat wings.
  • Your Vampires Suck: Remilia actually likes cross imagery, and can't fathom why she should be weak to them. Her spell card "Red: The Nightless Castle" appears as a towering crimson cross. She also seems to be perfectly fine with holy water. One of her win quotes in the fighting games is to ask Reisen to make her some holy water dumplings.

    Flandre Scarlet

The Sister of the Devil
Flandre Scarlet

"I've been sleeping in the basement. For about 495 years."

Younger sister of Remilia Scarlet and the extra stage boss. She possesses the power to destroy anything at will, but due to her immaturity and mental instability, she's been kept locked up in the mansion basement for around 495 years. Despite this, she doesn't usually try to escape, and is actually quite fond of her older sister. Foul Detective Satori shows that she isn't as immature or unstable as she looks, allowing herself to be locked up in the basement because she had all her needs and wants taken care of. This revelation surprises even Sakuya, who was under the assumption she was locked up unwillingly.

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: In order to prepare her for her fight against Yuuma in Sunken Fossil World, Okina sends Flandre to fight every other character featured in the game so she'd be less weak against flowing water.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She ends up being the true heroine of Sunken Fossil World, being the one to defeat Yuuma thanks to Okina's scheming.
  • Ax-Crazy: Downplayed; she's introduced in her first appearance as an unstable force of destruction, though she is at least willing to follow the setting's Spell Card rules during her boss fight. Later appearances show that she's generally very stable and cognizant, though she does have a violent streak that occasionally comes out.
  • BFS: Lævateinn is described as a massive flaming sword in The Grimoire of Marisa.
  • Big Sister Worship: She's stated to admire Remilia (her older sister).
  • Blood Knight: She loves being able to flex her power, both within Spell Card rules and without, and will jump at the chance to fight a strong foe. Her motivation for going through with Okina's schemes to defeat Yuuma is best exemplified with the following pre-battle quote with her:
Flandre: "I'm no hero of justice. I just want to destroy the indestructible. Especially you, who no one else can destroy! Here I come!"
  • Breakout Character: Flandre is an incredibly popular character with the fandom, in spite of spending the better part of two decades being relegated to cameos and voiceless appearances in compilation games, owing to her status as the first Extra boss in the Windows era and the iconic nature of her Leitmotif. This finally paid off when she played a major role in the first arc of Foul Detective Satori, then becoming effectively the true protagonist of Sunken Fossil World, ultimately becoming the second character who's not a mainline heroine to win the annual Character Popularity Poll. Even ZUN admitted to being surprised at just how beloved she had become.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: When Marisa faces her in the Extra stage, Flandre offers to play with her for "one coin", because "you can't continue". Continues are indeed disabled on the Extra stage.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Flandre's earlier depictions showed her as being excitable and naive, an aimless force of destruction that can be easilynote  placated by playing with her, and kept secured in the mansion's basement. Then comes her return in Foul Detective Satori and she makes plain just how cognizant she is. She is childish, certainly, but not dim: she's perfectly aware that everyone thinks she's locked up down there, but because she's able to live stress-free, she's fine just letting others think that. In truth, she knows full well that, if she really wanted, nothing could hold her.
  • The Bus Came Back: After her initial set of appearances from 2002-2009 (Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red, Shoot the Bullet, and profiles in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense and Grimoire of Marisa), she disappeared for about a decade before appearing as a boss character in Violet Detector (more specifically, her dream self did), then appearing with Remilia in The Grimoire of Usami, then getting a significant role in the first arc of Foul Detective Satori, and then becoming a playable character in Sunken Fossil World.
  • Characterization Marches On: What little characterization Flandre was given in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil through her dialogue and profiled portrayed her as a violently unstable Creepy Child who had to be kept under lock-and-key at all times just to prevent her from going on a rampage, and as a result of her life-long imprisonment was too innocent to understand how dangerous she was. Foul Detective Satori ignores this completely and portrays Flandre as fully cognizant and sane, instead being a bloodthirsty borderline-sociopath who stays locked-up willingly because all her needs are tended to. She if anything now comes off as more mature than Remilia does.
  • Creepy Child: A seemingly upbeat girl who also is implied to be some degree of a high-functioning sociopath.
  • Cross Attack: She has an attack called "Counter Clock" that creates X-shaped spinning gears to attack the opponent.
  • Disadvantageous Disintegration: The ability to destroy anything sure as heck doesn't leave any blood for Flandre to drink when she blows someone up.
  • Dissonant Serenity: She's generally pretty calm and upbeat... which does nothing to lessen the creepy factor when she keeps that same demeanor while casually blowing stuff up.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Her ability, along with her immense physical strength, tends to leave all of her playthings destroyed. She considers destroying a meteor hurtling toward the mansion as unimpressive.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: "Four of a Kind" has her split into multiple Flandres, likely using the same principle as Remilia's ability to split into an infinite number of bats.
  • The Dreaded: Those outside the Scarlet Devil Mansion who know of Flandre are generally so fearful of her unstable personality and destructive potential that they just presume she was kept a prisoner in the manor's basement, because of course that's just what you do with creepy sociopaths like her. (She's not, she just doesn't like going outside). Even Marisa is shown to be extremely wary of encountering Flandre in her sojourns to the Mansion, and she typically has no problem dealing with at times world ending threats with gusto.
  • Fight Off the Kryptonite: Flandre's scenario in Sunken Fossil World consists of Okina teaching her how to fight around running water (or running oil, in this case) so that she can face Yuuma.
  • Gemstone Assault: Fitting the unique theme of her wings, her unique bullets take the form of crystals.
  • Genki Girl: Always craving a new playmate.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Woman!: She does this to Reimu in Sunken Fossil World in the penultimate fight to the True Final Boss in her route, being absolutely disappointed seeing the miko who defeated her acting so despondent and seemingly running from an enemy. It takes Reimu fighting her to a standstill for Flandre to be satisfied that Reimu's still got it, before Reimu explains to her that the only reason she bowed out against Yuuma was that it was physically impossible for her to win.
  • A God Am I: Proudly declares herself a God of Destruction in Sunken Fossil World.
  • Graceful in Their Element: After spending all of Sunken Fossil World having to avoid running water and oil, the second half of the Final Boss fight involves running... blood. As you might expect, Flandre's handicap being flipped ends poorly for Yuuma.
  • Healing Factor: Like Remilia, she heals from wounds very quickly.
  • Hikikomori: In Foul Detective Satori, Flandre explains that she doesn't feel much need to leave her basement, since she gets food delivered and there's no bothersome sunlight.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Even more so than Remilia. Whereas Remilia can act mature when the situation requires it, Flandre never does. On the other hand, it's actually justified in Flandre's case, as she's been locked away from society for the last five centuries.
  • Invisibility: Secret Barrage "And Then Will There Be None?" has her go invisible. Well, the post-battle dialogue says she's invisible, but in-game you'd still be able to hit her if she was actually on screen.
  • Kill It with Water: Shares Remilia's weakness to running water, though in Sunken Fossil World she gains a higher resistance to it thanks to Okina.
  • Leitmotif: "U.N. Owen Was Her?", probably the most popular leitmotif of the series, since it must hold some kind of record for most remixes of any piece of music anywhere. ZUN himself has remixed it.
  • Little Miss Snarker:
    • Of what little we see of Flandre's actual personality she's actually quite snide and clever. She points out that Aya's article about her had an ending that didn't at all involve her or the actual story; and makes fun of her sister's pretentious behavior about manipulating fate and being a know it all.
    • She is shown in Foul Detective Satori gleefully teasing Sakuya about being the culprit, and also when she reveals she doesn't like truffles.
  • Madwoman in the Attic: She's been shut down in the Scarlet Devil Mansion's basement for 495 years, since her birth. Foul Detective Satori plays with this somewhat - her imprisonment is entirely voluntary, but her only reason for not going on a rampage amounts to her needs being tended to and not wanting to deal with sunlight.
  • Master of All: She can do more or less everything that Remilia can (minus her possible ability to manipulate fate), and is even stronger than she is.
  • No-Sell: Like all Extra bosses, she's unaffected by Bombs.
  • No Social Skills: Her social skills aren't the best due to being stuck in the basement most of the time.
  • Ominous Music Box Tune: Her Battle Theme Music, U.N. Owen Was Her, prominently features this among other child-like instruments, most notably in the pre-chorus/bridge.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: In a series that runs on ludicrously powerful girls beating the crap out of each other, Flandre surpasses nearly all of them in sheer damage potential. Even Marisa makes it a point to avoid her whenever she's at the Scarlet Devil Mansion to steal books, which is impressive considering the things she's faced.
  • Playing with Fire: In the series she attacks you with her fire sword Lævateinn.
  • Pre-Final Boss: She's the penultimate boss of the Yorigami sisters' scenario in Sunken Fossil World, the two having been transported to the Scarlet Devil Mansion by Okina in order to serve as implied target practice for Flandre.
  • Promoted to Playable: One of the playable characters in Touhou Gouyoku Ibun ~ Sunken Fossil World.
  • Public Domain Artifact: Has an attack named after Laevatein, the "Wounding Wand of Loki". This is commonly thought to be the oddly-shaped staff Flandre carries in her portrait, although the Grimoire of Marisa describes the attack as an enormous Flaming Sword. Most fans usually assume that the massive flaming sword is generated from the staff when Flandre wishes so, which makes some sense, and the interpretation Sunken Fossil World goes with.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Younger than Remilia by five years, making her around 495 at the time of the game.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has red eyes and the ability to destroy anything by destroying its "eye".
  • Riddle for the Ages: Why do her wings look like that?
  • Scary Teeth: In Foul Detective Satori she is shown to have a pretty mean and intimidating pair of chompers.
  • Self-Duplication: One of the powers she possesses over her sister is making duplicates of herself.
  • Self-Restraint: As Flandre explains in Foul Detective Satori, she only stays in the basement because she wants to be down there.
Flandre: I wouldn't say I was "locked up." The sunlight doesn't reach down here. I get food and everything else brought right to me. I was just comfortable, that's all. [grins] I mean, I can destroy anything I want. You couldn't lock me up if you tried to.
  • Shatterpoint Tap: Her power to destroy anything functions this way. She senses the "core" of a person or thing (she calls it an "eye") and teleports it into her hand, then crushes it, causing its owner to explode into bits on the spot.
  • Shout-Out: Flandre's survival card and the title of her theme both refer to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None.
  • Signature Headgear: Just like her sister, she wears a mob cap tied with a red ribbon. However, unlike Remilia, who can pull off the feat of looking refined wearing a mob cap, Flandre's headwear merely tends to emphasize how childish she looks.
  • Smarter Than You Look: In Foul Detective Satori, she easily deduces the fact that Sakuya couldn't have been the culprit that attacked Patchouli, when she says that Sakuya isn't one to do anything halfway. She knows that Sakuya would have finished off Patchouli just to be safe rather than leave anything to chance, so she busts out of the basement along with Sakuya to find the real culprit.
  • Sociopathic Hero: In Sunken Fossil World, Flandre is still an Ax-Crazy, literally bloodthirsty Blood Knight with zero real morals of any kind, but is still one of the lead heroines thanks to being Okina's counter for Yuuma.
  • Stronger Sibling: Is much stronger than her sister Remilia, but lacks her cunning and experience.
  • Superboss: Extra Stage boss of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: Though her primary use of her curved staff is to produce a giant flaming sword, she can also use it as a bow that fires crystals.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: Flandre doesn't get to use her main power that much as it involves just blowing the target to smithereens, something that a vampire has very little use for as that means she can't suck their blood, not to mention that the nature of combat in Gensokyo makes such a power all but useless in a spell card duel. However, this makes her the best possible match against Yuuma. Since Yuuma can just absorb her enemy's attacks, having a power that involves blowing someone inside out means that she cannot just eat Flandre's attacks to nullify them. Yuuma can't talk her down either, as Flandre is only there to see if she can defeat Yuuma when no one else could.
  • To Serve Man: Since she has trouble drinking blood by herself, Sakuya makes human-composed dishes to provide her sustenance. Flandre herself is unaware of this.
  • Vague Age: Like Remilia, her exact physical age isn't ever given, although it's presumably lower than her sister's.
  • Viewer Name Confusion: While "Flandre" is pretty widely accepted in the Western parts of the fandom, no one else is certain how to spell it. The fact that "furandouru" wouldn't be pronounced much like "Flandre" probably helps. "Frandle", "Frandre" and "Frandoll" are the most often seen alternate spellings.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: Like her sister, Flandre can also shapeshift into a bat. Oddly enough, her unique wings don't carry over to bat form. In Sunken Fossil World its used as her air dash.
  • Weakened by the Light: As a vampire, she's weak to sunlight.
  • Winged Humanoid: While she otherwise appears human, she has what are best described as Christmas lights wings. Explicitly stated to be useless for flying, but being in a world where even a mild magic proficiency allows for flight, Flandre has no problems staying airborne anyway.
  • Worthy Opponent: Has this in Sunken Fossil World towards Utsuho and Reimu, being the only two opponents Flandre faces that she doesn't actually defeat so much as battles to a draw, and their post-battle mugshots don't even show battle damage like the rest. She acknowledges the two personally on top of that, wanting to keep fighting Utsuho before Okina pulls her away, and holding Reimu in especially high regard when they meet again, aghast that Reimu would be showing weakness of any kind. The epilogue heavily implies Yuuma is this now as well, as she's perfectly happy to fight her again since she can just revive if Flandre kills her.
  • Your Vampires Suck: Flandre also seems to like cross imagery - in Shoot The Bullet Aya's notes on her second spell card say that "she just came out and played with it..."

    Rin Satsuki

Rin Satsuki

The game's Dummied Out character, which ZUN had to cut from the game due to a lack of time. All there is about her are her name and two Spell Cards in the game's code.

  • Blow You Away: One of her Spell Cards would have been a "Wind Sign".
  • One-Steve Limit: The limit has sort of been broken, with Subterranean Animism introducing Rin Kaenbyou, albeit in her case Rin is spelled 燐 instead of 麟.
  • Petal Power: One of her Spell Cards was going to be a "Flower Sign".
  • Player Character: She was going to be a playable character just like Reimu and Marisa, as confirmed by ZUN when he was asked about her at Anime Weekend Atlanta 2013.
  • Uniformity Exception: She would have been this had she not been cut from the game. Every main series game except for the versus shmups and obviously the first game has characters appear as a boss or midboss before they can be Promoted to Playable in a later installment (even Marisa was subject to this, being a boss in Story of Eastern Wonderland before becoming playable in all subsequent entries). Rin Satsuki would have broken the rule by debuting as playable.

Alternative Title(s): Embodiment Of Scarlet Devil, Touhou Embodiment Of Scarlet Devil
