Satan Jacob/Sadao Maou

Voiced by: Shinobu Matsumoto (Drama CD) and Ryōta Ōsaka (Anime) (Japanese), Jessie James Grelle (English)

Maou is the protagonist and, as his new name suggests, the former Devil King. After being defeated in Ente Isla, he withdrew with his remaining general, Alciel, to a new world where he would recuperate and regroup. Unfortunately, this new world does not possess magic, reducing him to a mere employee at MgRonalds, slowly morphing into a rather nice (if snarky) person.

• Adaptational Nice Guy: The anime downplays the level of his responsibility in and the scale of the atrocities his forces committed. It also leaves out that many of his more heroic actions are actually Pragmatic Villainy: He doesn't return to Ente Isla as soon as he has the chance because he would lose and he cleans up the damage to the city to make a good impression on the hero's group so they won't kill him.
• Affably Evil: Maou is snarky but generous and friendly even when plotting world domination.
• Ambiguously Evil: One of the main questions of the series is what was his real reason for invading Ente Isla. Alciel and other high-ranking demons that have arrived to Japan imply the Demon World was under crisis but Maou himself seems regretful of his previous attitude towards Ente Isla, calling himself obsessed with greed. The real reason is that he's trying to fix the eventual starvation of demon world he inadvertently created when he united the place, and his complete lack of understanding of humans just made things worse when he mistreated them without knowing why it's a bad thing to do so.
• Anti-Villain: When he was back in Ente Isla, despite being an evil overlord he was actually pretty personable. Upon crossing over and starting a new life on Earth, the most evil thing he does, on average, is talk about how he'll eventually conquer the world, by way of climbing the corporate ladder.
• Asskicking Leads to Leadership: He's the lord of all demons because he's the most powerful one around with four subordinates well above almost all humans. They still can't match up to him, despite some of them holding rather impressive resumes of their own.
• Badass Cape: Part of his original clothing he has from Ente Isla.
• Bad Powers, Good People: On Earth, he gets stronger by feeding on the terror and other negative emotions of nearby humans, but he doesn't intentionally terrorize them, and after defeating those who do, he often expends all of his accumulated power to undo the collateral damage.
• Baritone of Strength: His voice noticeably deepens when in demon form.
• Becoming the Mask: When acting as a model employee he comes to understand humans better and to really value this new world.
• Beware the Nice Ones: While he's currently pretty nice, but if push comes to shove he'll remind you why he's the king of the demons.
• Benevolent Boss: Extremely so, above and beyond expectations. Maou demonstrates an unquestionable amount of loyalty to his underlings, and does not hold a grudge for betrayal or usurpation.
• BFS: Can turn his broom/mop into one.
• Bishōnen Line: After fusing with Acies, he can call upon great amount of demonic energy but will remain in his human form.
• Blue-and-Orange Morality: He realizes this while working at a farm owned by Chiho's family. Due to the lack of need of crops, Maou at the time didn't understand why Emi got so riled up about the destruction of her village. Now knowing the arduous work that goes into agriculture that without it there is no society, no civilization. And it was why without him, the demon lands were at constant war.
• Brought Down to Normal: In the final novel, his powers are taken by Emi and he lives a normal human life as Sadao Mado.
• Burger Fool: Averted; he loves his job at MgRonald's and views it as Serious Business.
• But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Maou's forces destroyed Emi's village, but he just gives a vague apology for his lack of understanding about humans back then, as well as lack of complete control over his underlings. He doesn't even know what she's talking about and she isn't exactly forthright on the details.
• Celibate Hero: "Hero" may not be the best word, but the great Demon Lord clearly has no interest in pursuing a romantic relationship of any kind. Sorry, Chiho.
• Character Name Alias: Demon Lord (Maou) Satan becomes Sadao Maou.
• Chick Magnet: Earns the feelings of Chiho, Suzuno and possibly Emi as of the later part of the novels
  • In the later volumes, Maou gets expensive Valentine's Day chocolate from a fellow management trainee. Of course, Hilarity Ensues in the various reactions of The Gang. However, noting that the chocolate is from a very expensive shop and the woman told Maou she was looking forward to White Day when he'd have to reciprocate, Suzuno and Emi are pretty sure that Maou has "done it again" and got someone to fall for him.
• Clark Kent Outfit: Maou's Demon Lord robes do quite a bit to disguise the gigantic Hunk underneath... up to and including changing his chin somehow.
• Clothing Damage: His clothes end up getting torn when he transforms into his true, larger form.
• Clueless Chick-Magnet: Due to him not really caring about romance, he has a tendency of saying lines that could be misconstrued as romantic which added with his affable personality, you get a major chick magnet.
• Compelling Voice: A hypnotic voice is one of the only powers Maou can use with his magic as low as it is and even then not much.
• The Comically Serious: At least while at work - he takes his job very seriously.
• Cool Sword: He received a sword made from his own cut horn near the end of Volume 4...which he then proceeds to remove the jewels attached to it and pawned the jewels off for some cash infusion. After fusing with Acieth Alla, he gets his own version of Better Half.
• Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: It's easy to forget that he's a powerful demon lord after his time on Earth robs him of the dignity and atmosphere such a title as 'Maou' merits.
• Curb-Stomp Battle: In the middle of a fairly even fight between Lucifer and Olba versus Emilia and Alsiel, Maou pops up, slams the injured Olba through a wall or something, teleports to Lucifer and oneshots him with a very powerful punch.
• Cute Little Fangs: He's often visualized with one tiny fang when he's being mischievous. It's more apparent in the manga.
• Dark Is Not Evil: While on Earth, he spends most of his time working at a fast-food restaurant, spending time with his closest friend/former general, and living a simple life.
• Deadpan Snarker: He's quite a sarcastic fellow.
• Death Glare: In his demon form. He literally glares Olba into a wall and makes Lucifer freeze up in fear.◊
• The Devil Is a Loser: Portrayed as rather lazy, uncaring, and focusing on his job at McRonald's.
• Doting Parent: He shockingly becomes this for Alas Ramus. Even willingly buying a color printer for her photos.
• Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Technically, "Maou" means "Devil King". In Ente Isla, humans refer to him in two syllables ("Ma-ou"), thus referring to his title. On Earth, they use the first syllable ("Mao"), thinking it is just his surname.
• Evil Is Petty: After letting Emi stay at his place the night before since she lost her wallet during an attack, the police bring Maou in for questioning regarding the incident. To get released, he calls Emi in to sign for him in the middle of work despite all his other options because it's his duty as an overlord to annoy heroes. Emi actually agrees with his logic.
• Evil Overlord: Formerly, and currently trying to reattain this status.
• Evil Sounds Deep: While in his true, intimidating form, Maou has a rougher voice.
• Flashy Teleportation: As seen in Episode 5, it has black and purple effects.
• From Nobody to Nightmare: Many would be surprised to learn that the devil king had humble beginnings. In fact, he was at the very bottom of the demonic pecking order, until his life was saved by an angel — Emi's mother, Laila. While he was recuperating, she tutored him in various things to pass the time, mainly politics, diplomacy and, most importantly, the proper use of military power. This knowledge was obviously put to very good use. Whoops.
• Genre Savvy: In Episode 5, Maou figures out who the villains are and their motives as soon as he meets them, explicitly comparing them to a B-movie. This is despite only being on Earth for a few months. (Ashiya immediately lampshades this by yelling at Maou for wasting money on movies when they have such a tight budget.)
• Going Native: Takes to Earth life like a duck to water. When he actually does attain enough power to get back to Ente Isla, he forgoes it — he has too many shifts that month. After the battle with Sariel, he does the same thing to fix the collateral damage that their battle caused.
• The Good King: He created the Demon World's first civilization and has shown himself to be a kind and loving king to his subjects. His invasion of Ente Isla is due to him wanting to help save his people and fix his own mistake.
• Good Thing You Can Heal: As a human, Maou sustains some really nasty, and occasionally outright fatal injuries, but fortunately this tends to coincide with a sudden boost in fear from nearby humans, recharging his demonic powers enough that he can recover.
• Growing Muscles Sequence: When transitioning between his human and true form.
• Hellish Pupils: Maou has red, slitted eyes which are about the only trace of his demon nature that carries over to his human form.
• Heroic Build: Whenever he gets his magic back, he also becomes completely ripped and he ends up destroying his shirts in the process (In the anime, anyway — in the manga, while he gets his horns and hooves back, he doesn't get the build the first time it happens).
• Hidden Agenda Villain: It takes some time for Emi to realize, but she doesn't actually know why Maou started the war in the first place and he refuses to tell her, even though it's clear that he isn't just power hungry. It takes around ten volumes for him to finally directly explain it to someone, though there had already been some hints before. Basically, just like on Earth, magic in Ente Isla is powered by emotions. However, after Maou united the demon world, they stopped fearing and hating each other, which largely shut off the production of the energy they needed to sustain themselves. As he explains to Suzuno, he had no intention of wiping out humanity because they needed humanity to fear them. Unfortunately, he failed to understand a few very critical things about humanity as a species, which led to the war going in a very different direction than he intended. Chief among them was that humans need to eat to survive, something he did not understand on an emotional level.
• Hidden Depths: Maou knows a lot more about the other world than he lets on, more so than rest of the main cast. He's generally the first to piece together the situation behind the scenes of the war betweeen Ente Isla and the Demon World.
  • As a human, his impressive work ethic at MgRonald's translates into an equally strong drive to learn all he can about Earth and Japanese society. It's something he also demonstrates back in the Demon World with his attempts to understand how humanity lives.
  • As a demon, he is revealed to be a surprisingly intelligent, charismatic, and compassionate leader who rose to power with goal of ending conflict and suffering in the Demon World.
• Horned Humanoid: The first clear sign that this new world has something wrong with it (from their perspective) is that Satan's horns have vanished. One of his horns has been cut partway through by Emi.
• Humanity Ensues: Once arriving on Earth.
• Hunk: His true form is huge, covered with muscle and gains a much more masculine and even craggy face.
• Karma Houdini: Because he isn't doing anything wrong in the present, Emilia and her allies are unwilling to charge him for his crimes in the past, terrible though they may have been. However, he has shown regret and indicated some intention of cleaning up his past mistakes.
• Large and in Charge: In his true form, Maou is nearly twice the size of most men.
• Large Ham: He can be prone to this when talking to Emi, such as when he announces his new position as shift manager in episode 7.
• Let's Get Dangerous!: You do not want to piss him off when he's fully powered, as highlighted in episode 12 of the anime.
• Lightning Bruiser: In his true form, Maou is as physically powerful as he looks, and can teleport with ease.
• Like an Old Married Couple: The kind of scene he sometimes instigates with both Alciel and Emilia.
• Mage in Manhattan: Maou still has a goal of taking over both worlds. By climbing up the wage slave ladder, apparently.
• Magic Pants:
  • His shirt gets ripped to shreds when switching to extra-large demonic beefcake form, but the top half of his pants survives somehow, and they're still tight when he shrinks again.
  • Also extends to his underwear, which is Lampshaded in episode 12.
• Maou the Demon King: Maou was king of the demons in Ente Isle before being defeated by Emilia. Unlike most examples he wasn't born into it, but rose up the ranks.
• Married to the Job: The reason he's turned down the Love Confessions thrown his way.
• Master of Illusion: Can disguise himself as someone else to get a surprise attack in on his enemies in his true form.
• Master of the Mixed Message: He doesn't give very clear signals to Chiho. He might sound like he's complimenting her or showing interest one moment, but will immediately and seamlessly continue on to remove all romantic overtones. To her credit, she doesn't sound too surprised whenever he does it, even when she gets her hopes up.
• Maybe Ever After: With Emi in the High School manga. After she finally getting the strength to make a Love Confession and talks with him in private over the rooftops, the two agree to spend more time together to learn more about each other in a way that heavily indicates they're basically dating, and the bonus story has Maou make a comment implying he's not entirely sure himself.
• Men Can't Keep House: Downplayed, but still there: Maou isn't untidy person by any means (especially compared to messy ones like Urushihara, Emeralda or Laila), but he relies a lot on Ashiya doing housework, so when situations required him to live alone in Volume 16 housekeeping ends up being neglected quite a bit. His busy schedule doesn't help one bit.
• Mundane Utility: With glowing red eyes and serious music, Demon Lord Satan uses his mighty but dwindling magical power to figure out what katsudon is.
• My God, What Have I Done?: His attitude towards his invasion of Ente Isla starts changing to this after he starts trying to research humans while in Ente Isla, and decisively becomes this after suffering malnutrition from 3 day's collapse when he initially arrives in Japan. He feels he was too naive in his thought process and his lack of knowledge about humans caused countless deaths among his people and hurt so many people like Emi.
• My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Maou reveals that he's not proud of how most demons are very vicious and cruel. And during the invasion of Ente Isla, he spent his time researching humanity.
• Named After Somebody Famous: No, he's not the Satan; according to him the name is incredibly common among demonkind, much like "Smith" or "Jones" in English-speaking countries.
• New Job as the Plot Demands: In the light novels, before settling down at MgRonald's, he took a variety of odd jobs within the first six months of his self-imposed exile on Earth.
• Nice Guy: Maou, the former Demon Lord. He's kind of snarky, but even in the first episode he's willing to hand over his own umbrella to a girl he doesn't know and doesn't expect to see again.
• Noble Demon: He really embraces his role as the Demon Lord, opposition by the Hero and the sacred church included. However, he refuses to involve innocent people in the conflict and tends to sacrifice his own goals in favor of preventing too much damage from occurring around.
• No Guy Wants to Be Chased: He's mostly uninterested in Chiho, despite her rather aggressive pursuit of him. He doesn't want to hurt her feelings, though, so he plays dumb as long as he can and then when she does confess he's troubled because he's not really sure how to deal with her.
• Not Distracted by the Sexy: Despite Chiho's best efforts, Maou doesn't even seem to notice her rather revealing swimsuit.
• Not What It Looks Like: He attempts to get Emi to finally talk to her mother in Volume 12 by telling Laila that he will only negotiate with her within Ashiya, Urushihara, Alas Ramus and Acieth Alla's earshot, and that he'll try to go home from work with Emi more often, to force Emi to use time at her home to talk to her mother. This ends up backfiring because the sole attempt for the two to talk to each other gets so awkward Emi decides to just stay at Villa Rosa Sasazuka for most days, making it look like she and Maou are getting affectionate with each other.
• Official Couple: With Chiho. Chiho is open to the idea of him marrying Emi as well, however.
• Person of Mass Destruction: His attacks in his demon form can be seen from outer space.
• The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: The former Demon Lord of Ente Isla, Maou's method for conquering the new world he's stranded on is to climb the corporate ladder at Mg Ronalds.
• Pointy Ears: As a demon in the manga and Light Novels, though not in the anime.
• Poke the Poodle: The most evil things he's seen doing, at least on Earth, are calling Emi in to sign for him in regards to the police questioning him in the middle of work despite all his other options, simply because as an Evil Overlord, it's his job to annoy heroes, and later having Lucifer prank call her.
• Pragmatic Villainy: At the very least, he claims that he fixed up the town after the fight with Lucifer because it would make Emi's allies see him as a good person and be reluctant to attack. Given that they were much stronger than him at the moment even if he didn't spend that power, it would be suitably pragmatic even if you assume he really didn't care about the town.
• Punch-Clock Hero/Punch-Clock Villain: If it's his job, he's going to do it to the best of his skills, be it conquering the world or cooking hamburgers.
• Really 700 Years Old: Maou is about three hundred years old.
• Red Eyes, Take Warning: On account of being Satan and all.
• Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Turns out, Satan is a common name for demons.
• Satan: Maou's actual name is Satan, though most people refer to him by title. When he has his magic power, he looks like one of the classic images: cloven hooves, horns, massive bulk and a transformation from Bishōnen to Hunk. Satan is a common name for demons and passed down from the original Demon Lord, who is a historical figure shrouded in myth.
• Satan Is Good: Or rather, Satan Has Good Intentions, Kinda Sucks at Keeping the Ground Troops In Line, and Has the Same Cognitive Biases the Rest of Us Have.
  "Well, I mean... I was really busy during that time. I couldn't be everywhere at once, so... And I'm not trying to say it's not my fault, but... I mean, demons and humans naturally just don't get along with each other, right? And back then I didn't really grasp the concept of humans, so..."
• Selective Obliviousness: Realizes Chiho likes him, but ignores it as best he can. He doesn't love her, but doesn't want to hurt her feelings either. So he just plays dumb.
• Serious Business: Maou takes his part-time job very seriously. In fact, in the anime part of the reason he blew his cover to Emi is that he was considering using magic to heat up some fries after the fryer broke. He was angrier that Lucifer might make him late for work and make him miss being employee of the month than that the latter was trying to kill him and destroyed part of the city.
• She Is Not My Girlfriend: He gets this a lot with Emi. After Alas Ramus arrives, people just think they're married.
• Smug Smiler: A job requirement as a Demon Lord.
• Sorcerous Overlord: Despite the imposing physicality he has in his demon form, Maou favors ranged magic over close combat.
• Stock Light-Novel Hero: Well, to start with, Maou is The Devil (granted, only the latest in a long line of them, but still) and was the most powerful demon back in home world. On Earth, however, he's rather unremarkable with plain black hair and a wardrobe that consists of Unislo and a fast food uniform. He's also quite intelligent and perceptive, having completely mastered everyday living on Earth in virtually no time at all. And finally, he of course winds up with an Unwanted Harem (albeit a small one). The overshadowing joke about all this, however, is that all he wants to be at the moment is to live as a regular part-time employee and Take Over the World by playing society's rules.
• Strike Me Down with All of Your Hatred!: After Emi becomes a bit of an emotional wreck in Volume 6 due to the revelation that her father is alive, Maou said that he probably should go back back to his old bloodshed conquering ways, to at least make Emi able to focus on him and not making her life feel pointless now that one of her primary motivation to kill him is now gone. It doesn't really work since Emi knows that he's not a bloodthirsty conqueror that he tried to portray himself here, especially after staying in Japan.
• Superpower Lottery: His true form provides Maou with unbelievable power, though the exact amount varies depending on how much fear and dismay he has access to.
• Super-Toughness: Even without magic, he's able to weather some pretty powerful blows including magical explosions, being blasted through walls or falling from lethal heights. The attacks hurt, but don't do nearly the damage you'd expect for someone with a mostly human body.
• Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: If you're a human, being shot hurts like hell. Maou found this out firsthand; even accounting for his Super-Toughness, he's still in a lot of pain.
• Take Over the World: Ente Isla and Earth - he's just planning on less destructive methods this time around. The link he somehow establishes between working his way up MgRonald's and taking over the world is flimsy at best.
  • While it's initially taken for granted that this is simply Maou's ambition, the question of exactly why he wants to do it starts to come up the more the other, non-demon characters interact with him. Alciel implies to both Rika and Suzuno that it was because they needed the resources to survive.
    Alciel (to Suzuno): "...I have to say, I envy your refrigerator. Open the door, and I am sure you will find the meat, the milk, the vegetables you bought yesterday. Anything missing from today's menu, you can run to the store to purchase. You can make wonderful dishes, and eat them at your leisure... I, and His Demonic Highness, too, I imagine, invaded Ente Isla in search of such things."
• Thou Shalt Not Kill: After coming to Japan, he refuses to kill.
  • This was always a trait of Maou's. In a prequel light novel regarding his early life in the Demon Realms, Maou is already very reluctant to kill. He would rather convert an enemy leader over to his side than kill them. Even when infiltrating Andramalech's stronghold, he disables the guards and hides their bodies rather than kill them outright, arguing that to kill them would create a bigger furor among the enemy if they found dead bodies littered around rather than knocked-out and tied up soldiers.
• Took a Level in Badass: Due to fusing with Acies, he is able to fight off Archangels like Gabriel and Camael.
• Tsundere: Type B towards Emi. Due to Emi having nearly killed him at the start of the series and her obvious hatred of him, he's reasonable scared of her. But as the series goes on, they start to trust each other more and more. And while Maou refuses to admit it, he does care about her as shown when Emi goes missing for 2 weeks in Volume 8, he was so worried he failed his moped license test. And he refuses to tell Emi his real intention for conquering Ente Isla, knowing that would cause her to doubt herself and be miserable as a result.
• Unskilled, but Strong: He's rarely shown in a situation where he'd need actual skill to take down his enemy when he has to cut loose. That said, with a punch that's about as strong as a nuke, it's not really surprising. This gets him in trouble when people stronger than him like Gabriel arrive.
• Unwanted Harem : Earns the feelings of Chiho and Suzuno and Emi in the latter novels.
• Villain Protagonist: He still intends to retake Ente Isla and now conquer the Earth, but in a less destructive way.
• Wham Line: A somewhat minor one, but the revelation that Maou didn't bring the full brunt of the demons to conquer the world was pretty surprising.
  Maou:“When you humans go to war, does every single one of you march off to the battlefield?”
• What Is This Feeling?: When Emi begins working at Maou's shop in volume 11 he's extremely uncomfortable for reasons he can't explain, especially since she isn't being hostile like normal.
• Worthy Opponent: He admits to himself that Emi is the only person that could see him as an equal due to their nearly similar power.
• Yin-Yang Bomb: A deconstructed example. After fusing with Acies, at first he has magic that is neither Holy nor Demonic. But any attempts to use that power fails and Maou can't absorb any Demonic magic either due to Acies' Holy magic and Maou's Demonic magic canceling each other out. It isn't till Acies absorbs a Yesod fragment that has been bathed in Demonic energy that they get a stable form and even then it's Demonic magic.
• You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Maou explains the obvious traits of Lucifer and Olba's takeover scheme, comparing it to a scheme that's not even used in B-Movies any more.
  • Which is followed by Alciel (who's badly hurt) berating him for wasting their budget on bad movies.

Emilia Justina/Emi Yusa

Voiced by: Yuu Asakawa (Drama CD) and Yōko Hikasa (Anime) (Japanese), Felecia Angelle (English)

Emilia is the Hero of Ente Isla. After defeating Maou, she tracked him down to Earth to stop his inevitable return, and learned just as he did that magic doesn't work too well. Seeing that Maou isn't causing any trouble, she begins to keep an eye on him while working as a call center agent (having faked her age to get it). Frustrated by Maou's apparent abandonment of his evil ways, she's at a loss for what to do.

• Action Girl: Emi appears to have galvanized the resistance to Maou with her sheer strength, determination and charisma. In direct combat, the two are viewed as being roughly equal and well above the likes of Maou's generals or Emi's group. Unfortunately, in the second novel she does come into conflict with someone that is her worst possible opponent even though he's supposed to be on her side and gets taken captive as a result. This gets turned up to eleven due to Better Half's fusing with Alas Ramus, she's the strongest fighter of the group till at least volume nine.
• Action Mom: After adopting Alas Ramus, she's this. Especially as she grown even stronger due to Alas Ramus fusing with her sword.
• A-Cup Angst: Emi is particularly jealous of Chi's... pair of one-pound hamburgers, to say the least, although she hastily tries to console herself by babbling about how being big isn't helpful in battle, and that being small means a cheaper plate armor and greater agility. When Emi first meets Suzuno, she looks at the other girl's chest while sighing in relief that she's "just like me".
  • Adding insult to injury, when Emi's mother Laila is revealed in the novels, her artwork depicts her not only as a very attractive woman but with large and noticeable endowments. Something that did not get passed down from mother to child!
• Adaptation Dye-Job: In the novel, Emi's eyes change from green to red when she powers up. In the anime, they remain the same. This turns out to be an actual oversight on the production's part and was corrected in later episodes. However, the actual shade of green is different from the novel anyway.
• Angrish: She can degenerate into convoluted raving when sufficiently angry.
• Ask a Stupid Question...: When Lucifer appears...
  Emi: "Who is that? Did he do this?!"
  Maou: "Isn't that obvious?"
• Barbie Doll Anatomy: When she is naked, she has no nipples.
• Because You Were Nice to Me: Due to Maou's constant protection, help and realization that he isn't as bad as she thought he was, she slowly grows to love him. It isn't till she hears that Maou is willing to protect her that she allows herself to love him.
• Becoming the Mask: She quickly settles so much into her role that it becomes a large part of who she is.
  • This is true for both her job in the human world, and her role as a hero in Ente Isla. When she finds out that the church betrayed her, and that her father is still alive, she has a Heroic BSoD that lasts most of the next volume.
• Berserk Button:
  • When Emi confronts Maou on acting so nice on Earth while he and his forces caused so much damage in her world, he gives a response of 'Ah, my bad, I wasn't really watching over my forces well enough. ...Besides, humans and demons never got along anyway.' The manner of delivery and the harshness of Emi's reaction vary by medium, but she's clearly pissed that he's not really accepting that much personal responsibility for the death of her father.
  • On a lighter note, she also gets very irritable when it comes to her breast size.
  • Never imply that she's in a romantic relationship with Maou. On second thought, go right ahead; the result is always hilarious.
  • In later volumes, her mother, or anyone mentioning her mother, really gets her worked up.
• Berserker Tears: Downplayed. Emi has a tendency to start crying when she gets truly furious, which does not help her dignity at all.
• Black-and-White Insanity: A mild case but trying to fit her clear-cut, black and white world views into our world composed of many shades of grey is at times very difficult for her. Much like Schwarzenegger's character from Last Action Hero, she's essentially a fantasy character brought into the real world and has a hard time dealing with the rules of reality. This often leads to moments of mild frustration to uncontrollable fury and even full blown sobbing. She gets better as time goes on and starts to accept that things aren't always black and white or good vs evil.
• Black-and-White Morality:
  • At the beginning, as far as Emi sees the world it really is just your classic, cliche "hero fights the evil overlord who is trying to take over the world for no reason" kind of story. However, when she's forced to take another look at the situation she realizes that it's not good versus evil but rather one nation against another and neither one is exactly morally spotless: Maou's generals rampage across the land attacking civilians while the Church leading the fight against him manipulate from the shadows as well as poison, plot and betray their way to power. She's pretty upset when she realizes the world isn't that simple, but gets over it quickly enough.
  • In a way, Emi is stuck in an endless cycle of this in regards to Maou. She's both strong enough to kill him at any point and is also capable of opening the gate to return to Ente Isla if she wanted. She refuses to kill Maou because he actually hasn't enacted any villainy on Earth but she won't return to Ente Isla either because she feels duty bound to keep watch over Maou in case he ever does.
• Braids of Action: Her one braid on her right side.
• Bridal Carry: Maou in his true form saves Emi from a fall this way. She immediately wants him to put her down.
• Broken Pedestal: She becomes very reluctant to trust anyone from the Church after seeing the High Priest Olba for the Sinister Minister he really is, especially after Olba teamed up with Lucifer and went so far as to make an entire mall full of civilians collapse in an effort to kill both Emi and Maou.
• Burger Fool: Due to losing her old job, she takes a new job at Maou's store. She's also an averted example as she doesn't hate her new job either.
• Butt-Monkey:
  • In Ente Isla, Emi has dignity. On Earth, she's the most common butt of jokes. The stairway of Maou's apartment has it in for her, she constantly forgets she's in public when talking about her identity and Maou says it's his personal duty to annoy her.
  • Borders on The Woobie in the later volumes: Her father is alive so one of her whole reasons and emotional supports to keep going is gone. Her mother, Laila, has been behind the scenes the whole time but never bothered to contact her or help her out directly. The Church she dedicated her life to is wholly corrupt and wanted to have her killed so that she was no threat and they could use her legend. Her close friends keep falling in love with demons. And said demons turn out to be more Proud Warrior Race Guy who just happened to get carried away in their conquests. And to top if all off, she begins to fall in love with the demon king herself after volume 12.
• Calling the Old Woman Out: When it becomes clear that her mother Laila has been pulling strings behind the scene, Emi gets upset about her mom causing problems, especially when she won't get in contact with her daughter. When they meet in volume eleven, Emi starts slapping her over and over, much to the shock of everyone present, and has to be pulled away before she can cause even more damage.
• Call to Agriculture: It does help that she always want to be this due to her being a farmer's daughter, but by Volume 12 she starts to seriously entertaining the idea of getting an Agricultural degree. This would also ensure that Emi would stay on Earth longer.
• The Cape: She manages to hit almost every point in the trope. She's honorable enough that she refuses to attack her most hated enemies if they can't fight back and she's virtuous enough to work against former allies and friends to do the right thing. When Suzuno indicates that should the two of them team up to take down Maou, Emi would be able to return to Ente Isla immediately and be a hero, Emi refuses immediately: It would be wrong to work with the faction that Suzuno represents, it would be wrong to attack someone that is doing nothing wrong, Suzuno's group is using antiheroic means at best and she doesn't even care about being rewarded in the first place. That said, however, she's sarcastic and rude in her personal life.
  • Continues in LN#4. In the climactic battle in the novel, she refuses to fight to kill. Emi could easily slaughter the enemy who number in the hundreds but she is tired of killing and does her best to rout the enemy through non-lethal injuries and refusing to outright kill the enemy leader when offered 1-to-1 combat. Luckily, it works out for her with the arrival of her friends and the enemy is cowed without slaughter.
• Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: Emi refuses to admit that she does care about Maou, Alshiya and Urushihara, although it starts to slowly crumble. This comes to a head in Volume 10 where after being forced to work for Olba, the despair of her being alone, helpless and that realizing that on subconscious level she truly enjoyed being with the demon trio, Chiho, Suzuno and Alas Ramus in Japan, made her resolve to be a hero completely shatters and resulting in her begging for Maou to save her. This incident, and with her talking to Maou about it later about why he saved her, ends up being what opens her heart to him.
• Character Exaggeration: Her aggression and hostility in the anime are exaggerated from the original source material. The manga in particular shows her being far more mellow around Maou. This seems to be the personal choice of the anime's director, who is a huge Chiho fan and altered the material to make Chiho more sympathetic and Emi less so.
• Character Name Alias: Hero (Yuusha) Emilia becomes Emi Yusa. Although in her case, this one is actually accidental: she took the surname of the former manager of her apartment who does have the surname Yusa, whom she is grateful to. Kind of like her father taking surname Sato from someone who helped him.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: At least in the eyes of Earthlings — no matter what she says, to Chiho (and later, Miki), she sounds and looks like an angry (ex-)girlfriend who hasn't let go of Maou. This gets funnier when Emeralda, who knew better of their relationship, said the same thing.
• Closed Door Rapport: On Earth, a simple locked door can keep a great heroine at bay and bring her down into tears.
• Cool Big Sis: To Chiho, after Chiho learns of where they are really from. She is quite protective of people in general.
• Cool Sword: Her sword "Better Half", which can only be used by half-angels. This may or may not be a lie by the Church to manipulate her.
• Cruel Mercy: Played for Laughs in a bonus short chapter for the manga. One day Emilia happens to run into Alciel whilst both of them were shopping for groceries and, after seeing how empty his bag was, gives him a packet of chopped pork whilst mocking him for having to accept charity from his mortal enemy. It works.
• Daddy's Girl: She loved her father, Nord, a lot. She even said that to her he was a hero.
• Damsel in Distress: In volume eight she's taken captive because Olba threatened the wheat fields of her abandoned home village. Yes, really. She surrendered to protect some wheat. Justified that she wouldn't trust the angels on the information that her father is alive and that the field is, to her, the last memory of him.
• Deuteragonist: Gets about as much focus as Maou.
• Doomed Hometown: As seen in a Flash Back during Episode 4. Shortly after she's taken in by the Church, the demons attack, and she assumes her father died after her town was sacked. This was the main motivation for her to take up being a hero and destroying the demon forces.
• Drop-In Character: Frequently forces her way into Maou's apartment. This coupled with her frequently nagging him plays a major factor in everyone thinking the two are dating.
• Enemy Mine: She will often join forces with Maou to combat a greater foe, but the two will always find a way to bicker the entire time.
• Et Tu, Brute?: She's on the verge of tears when Olba reveals his treachery, but when Maou takes the opportunity to hurl childish taunts at him she's amused instead.
• Everyone Can See It: Virtually everyone points out that she and Maou seem like they are a couple and the fact that Emi will deny it so extremely doesn't help her case.
• Expressive Hair: Emi's hair antenna tends to whip around or increase in volume exponentially when she's agitated.
• Fantastic Racism: Emi is generally friendly and helpful... Unless she's talking to a demon, in which case she's a petty ball of passive-aggressive anger at best and outright murderous at worst. After all, it's not easy associating with the guys who burned your village to the ground.
  Maou: "Just what the hell do you think we are?"
  Emi: "Bloodthirsty monsters that are worse than cockroaches, that's what."
• Fiery Red Head: Normally calm and collected, but Maou can bring out her fiery side.
• Friendly Enemy: By the end of the first novel she trusts Maou and Alciel not to cause problems or hurt anyone and begins spending a fair amount of time with them. Not that she would ever admit it.
• General Ripper: Terror on Ente Isla? Maou's fault. Terror upon Earth? Maou is involved. Something remotely suspicious? It has to be connected to Maou. Prank calls from work? That is definitely Maou's fault. The culprit behind the prank calls was Urushihara and he currently lives with Sadao, so Guilty By Association?
• Godiva Hair: Emi when in the bath during Episode 4.
• Going Native: Not at first, but after a couple of months and few meltdowns, she loosens up and starts to enjoy life on Earth. She would never admit it of course.
• Good Is Not Dumb: She may be rather naive sometimes, but after seeing what the church is capable of she isn't willing to trust them anymore. A wise decision since even though Suzuno does mean well, her superiors don't. At all.
• Good Is Not Nice: Though she does her best to live up to her title of the hero in every sense that she can, she's also rude, petty and returns a favor from Maou by breaking the umbrella she borrowed, though she does grudgingly replace it later.
• Half-Human Hybrid: The reason Emi was trained to be a Hero is because her mother was an angel, and her father a human. The fact that she exists despite how this is normally supposed to be impossible is a hint that the angels may not be as alien as the humans think they are.
• Hero Antagonist: Her full title on Ente Isla is "Emilia the Hero." and her sole goal is to defeat Sadao, even after she learns that he's living a domestic life. She lightens up after a while.
• Honor Before Reason:
  • She didn't lose as much of her power as Maou did when she arrived on Earth, but she still won't attack him without provocation. At first she claims it's because she wasn't sure that he was really as weak as he seemed, but later says it would be dishonorable to kill someone who can't fight back and that he deserves a better death.
  • Subverted at least once. When Suzuno tries to offer her an alliance, she says she refuses to work with the church anymore after Olba. Suzuno tries to argue that she gave her word to help the church whenever they needed it, but Emi retorts that that offer was given before she knew that they were lying corrupt scumbags and is no longer valid.
  • She also insists of paying her debt even with her financial situation and her friends she owed to is more than willing to forgive the debt.
• Hot-Blooded: Emi gets rather worked up from time to time regarding Maou.
• Human Weapon: Trained by the Church for the specific purpose of eliminating the Devil King.
• Humble Goal: Emi's goal after finally defeating Maou is to return home and plant wheat in her father's house. Olba took advantage of this and threatened to destroy her old home unless she came with him. She accepted.
• Hypocritical Humor: And self aware enough to know it too. After sneering at Maou for being broke and with a mundane life and job, we then cut to her next day at work at a call center, after which she buys some chicken that's on sale and goes home to her normal apartment and watches bad TV before exploding that she's doing the exact same thing Maou is.
• I Choose to Stay: After the first arc, she opts to stay in Japan under the pretense of keeping an eye on Maou. Of course, she's probably not in any hurry to return to Ente Isla, since she'd likely come into conflict with her former allies.
• Idiot Hair: She's not stupid, but she's rash, aggressive, and overly emotional. She is also appallingly ignorant when it comes to theology: even Maou himself is better informed than her.
• Ignored Enemy: Maou takes Emi about as seriously as an abandoned kitten, all pity and no fear, despite the fact that Emi was the one who defeated him and drove him out of Ente Isla in the first place.
• Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Though motivated in part by revenge, she refuses to seek it when she sees her targets aren't actually doing anything wrong. Further, her purity serves as an example to the better parts of the human side and caused the Church to see her as a liability since she'd be appalled by their scheming and corruption. When confronted by the complexity of the situation she refuses to side against Maou... but she also holds onto her moral convictions by stating that he has done wrong and must be brought to justice eventually.
• Inspector Javert: Seems to think Maou is up to something evil and continues to stalk him daily on her free time despite the fact he hasn't been anything but an upstanding citizen since day one of being on Earth.
• Instant Armor: Emi summons her armor and sword via magic.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She treats Maou's group with little to no respect and stalks them in her free time, but no matter how much she doesn't want to admit it, she trusts and cares for them.
• Leg Focus: Most of the Male Gaze shots tend to focus on her legs.
• Like an Old Married Couple: The kind of scene she instigates every single time she talks to Maou and having a 'family fight' when they're against Gabriel.
• Locked Out of the Loop: Emi spends much of the series knowing less than everyone else about Maou, the church, the war between Ente Isla and the Demon World, and even the truth of her own origins.
• Luminescent Blush: Reacts this way in episode 12, when Maou says he can see her breasts after he rescues her. Her entire head is red.
• Magic Knight: She favors direct melee combat, but knows a fair amount of magic as well. When she doesn't have enough power to rely on she can't use her sword to its full extent nor materialize all of her magic armor.
• The Magnificent: Emilia The Hero (or Hero Emilia). She had nicknames such as "Holy Knight Emilia", "The Battle Maiden" and "Goddess Knight".
• Maybe Ever After: With Maou in the High School manga. After finally getting the strength to make a Love Confession and talking with him in private over the rooftops, the two agree to spend more time together to learn more about each other in a way that heavily indicates they're basically dating, and the bonus story has Maou make a comment implying he's not entirely sure himself.
• Missing Mom: She always believed that her mother, Laila, died when she was a baby, but before the church came to take her away her father revealed that Laila is in fact alive. When Emeralda and Albert visit Japan they pass along one of her feathers, saying they were sent to help keep her safe since her mother is worried about her. Emi didn't even know her name.
• Ms. Fanservice: Emi sure does get a generous amount of Shower and Lingerie Scenes, doesn't she?
• Mystical White Hair: When manifesting her angelic abilities, her hair turns white starting at the roots.
• Not What It Looks Like: Emi has a good deal of trouble convincing people that she's not Maou's stalker ex-girlfriend.
• Office Lady: Emi's new job is less impressive than her old one but it pays better than Maou's. Though due to the events of volumes 8 through 10, she was fired.
• Omniglot: Emi is so skilled with languages that it might as well be magic. When greeted in a language she's never heard before she's capable of responding in kind.
• The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Emi tells Maou about a demon that called her because she insists on being the one to defeat him. An unimpressed Maou points out that she probably shouldn't be talking about that in public. When Suzuno tries to offer an alliance to take him down, Emi refuses partially on the grounds that it's something she wants to do herself. It's her responsibility and she doesn't want the corrupt church to profit off his demise.
• O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After she learns that her father isn't dead she lightens up towards Maou despite her best intentions, which freaks him out. When she stops trying altogether and begins interacting with him normally he does his best to avoid her because of how weird she's being, but can't. Then she starts to go into more affectionate (if even just slightly) territory.
• The Paladin: As the great hero of human and archangel blood destined to slay evil.
• Person of Mass Destruction: Given that Maou is this and she can match him, she's also this. She even annoyingly compares herself to nuclear weapons when Emeralda told her not to come back to Ente Isla in Volume 5 or the various nations will fight amongst themselves just to try to secure her.
• Playing with Fire: Emi can summon holy flames to strike her opponent.
• Power Dyes Your Hair: When in battle mode, Emi's hair turns silver.
• Power of Love: Her holy powers are implied to require this to recharge Emi's and apparently this is harder to get than Maou's requirements of restoring his, so Emi has to settle for a special magical supplement made by Emeralda to recharge them in a reasonable timeframe.
• Promoted to Love Interest: In the light novel continuity, she ultimately chooses to let Chiho get with Maou instead of herself. In the High School manga, she instead gets a Maybe Ever After once she confesses to Maou after prodding from Rika, with him agreeing to get to know her a little better.
• Really 17 Years Old: She's 17 years old, but has ID papers stating she's over 20. Part of why she has a slightly better job than Maou.
• Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: The church has been saying that Emi is dead to use her legend to strength their influence over Ente Isla.
• Running Gag: She's the most frequent victim of the rickety (and apparently cursed) staircase outside Maou's apartment, which everybody falls down at some point or another. Mostly because A). she's too stubborn to listen to Maou's warnings and B). It's funny.
• Samus Is a Girl: The Hero is revealed to be Emi in the end of the first episode. Reinforced by the fact we never see her face under the armor and that the narrator uses gender neutral language like 'hero' rather than stating a name. She also uses a unique golden set of armor that she never wears again, as opposed to the more feminine white armor she utilizes for the rest of the series. The manga was less subtle.
• She Is Not My Girlfriend: Emi's blushing and actions do little to help her case that she doesn't love Maou, though Chiho is let in on the secret at the end of the first novel and Episode 5.
• Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: Even though extravagant hair colors are common in this series, this color combination indeed marks her as an important character.
• Skilled, but Naive: She's very powerful and charismatic, but is genuinely shocked to discover that the Church of Ente Isla, which she had worked for her entire life, was corrupt. Maou and her former companions seem to be much savvier than her: Neither Albert nor Emeralda seem all that surprised that the Church was corrupt and Maou picks apart the enemy plot in seconds. Furthermore, she was unaware that Suzuno was another Ente Isla native, which Maou's group knew from the minute they saw her, until Suzuno flat-out told her so to her face; Suzuno herself is absolutely shocked that Emi didn't already know. Further, she later realizes that she doesn't even really know how her own powers work.
• Stalker without a Crush: Emi does regular stakeouts outside of Maou's apartment and frequently shadows him around town on the off chance that one of his daily errands does turn out to be a nefarious misdeed. She is aware of how bad this looks. One point in the later volume she ends up accidentally doing this to Maou and her mother, and remarked that she's getting rusty.
  Emi: And, once again, I spent today being a stalker.
• Stock Light-Novel Hero: The parody is that she's the Hero Antagonist of the story and, thus, an inversion. But otherwise, Emilia fits the role of a Stock Light Novel protagonist including her massive fighting power that allowed her to almost single-handedly defeat Maou's forces. However, because she lacks the main character status, she lacks the rest of the trope's requirements, such as a harem. In fact, by later volume, she is slowly becoming a member of someone else's harem.
• Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
  • In the second episode, she knocks on Maou's door, threatening them with divine punishment. They simply lock the door. They only open it for her after hearing her cry.
  • Catching Chiho after she's thrown by Lucifer from pretty high up ends up breaking her legs.
  • She gets fired from her old job due to being AWOL for several weeks.
• Sympathy for the Devil: Which is why she's having trouble with the whole slaying business.
• Thou Shalt Not Kill: She shows her change in attitude towards demon by not killing a single invading demon in volume 4.
• Took a Level in Badass: Due to Alas Ramus fusing with her holy sword, not even Archangels are a match for Emi anymore.
• Took a Level in Kindness: Due to dropping most of her hatred towards Maou and realizing that demons are more complex than she originally thought, she much more calm around the three demons.
• Tsundere: Emi is conflicted because she remembers the brutal war, but sees Maou being genuinely kind and helpful. It makes it hard to know how to treat him. She has a perfectly legitimate grievance and almost feels betrayed that he's not acting like a villain. What's more, the tsun side of the personality is exaggerated in the anime, leaving her very unlikely to admit that she at least trusts Maou, even if she doesn't like him. When she learns that her father isn't even dead, she drops most of her personal issues against him, though she feels it's still her duty as a hero to oppose him. Volume 12 is where this is slowly going from general interaction Tsundere to a romantic Tsundere.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Curry, she grew obsessed with the food during her one year stay away in Japan before she met Maou again.
• Tyke Bomb: Emi was raised by the church to be their weapon against the demons, given a skewed picture of the world and lied to as convenient in order to make her more obsessive about fulfilling her goals of defeating the overlord. However, when she's out from under their thumb and gets a chance to actually interact with demons on a personal level she sees that they are if not good then at least people. The contrast between her upbringing and her actual morality frustrates her because it leaves her unable to pursue revenge, but she doesn't know what else to do with herself without that driving force.
• Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Before she was taken in by the church she lived with her father and was very sweet and affectionate. Then Lucifer's army burned down her village, causing her to swear vengeance on the demon army.
• Villainous Rescue: Apparently, this seems to happen to her a lot. Either it's Maou letting her stay the night at his home, and give her money for train fare when she loses her wallet, to having Alciel saving her from taking a fatal blow in Episode 5. In volume three she gets to return the favor by driving off Gabriel after he incapacitates and nearly kills Maou.
• Why Can't I Hate You?: Having spent the majority of her life either preparing or actively attempting to slay him and avenge her father, Emi is very annoyed that Maou isn't acting remotely evil enough to justify slaying. And it turns out that not only did Maou not kill her father, he isn't actually dead at all.
• Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Lizards turns out to be this to her, however it's in an unusual way: she just couldn't bring herself to kill one even if the situation might demand it (like in Volume 17 where she might need to kill a giant demon lizard with dementia) due to the sheer amount of butchering and grilling she did to Dragonicks in Volume 0 causing some trauma.
• Willfully Weak: When she said she could kill Maou at any time during their first confrontations, she meant it. However, doing so both seems morally unjustified and would leave her stranded, so she resolves to keep an eye on him until he does do something wrong.
• Work Off the Debt: After Volume 10, she owes quite a good deal of money to Maou after the latter needed to shell out quite a bit in order to mount a rescue operation for her. Technically this is self-inflicted since Maou was only used that sarcastically to get her to work at MgRonalds with him and her friends and parents are more than willing to help her financially, but her pride wouldn't allow her to do that and thus she chooses to work it off herself...and joins Maou at MgRonalds anyway.
• Worthy Opponent: Though Maou doesn't take her seriously a lot of the time, she actually says at one point that while she could have killed him easily, it would be beneath them both to do so when he couldn't fight back. This side of her is downplayed in the anime, leaving it less clear as to why she doesn't attack him when she has the clear advantage in strength.
• Wrong Genre Savvy: She thinks she's in a standard "hero kills the evil demon lord" story. It's actually a comedy with Grey-and-Gray Morality.
• You Can't Go Home Again: She can't return to her hometown, which was burned to the ground by demons, or Ente Isla after the first arc/novel.
• You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: The Church had planned to make her into a Martyr by end of the war; either she would be killed in battle or, if that failed, they'd quietly off her once it was over.
• You Killed My Father: Emi's main motivation for becoming The Hero, since Maou's forces razed her village shortly after her father sent her with some church officials to train and fight against the demons. In the dub, she says she even said this to Lucifer when she took him down in Ente Isla. Finding out that her father is alive puts her in Heroic BSoD since her main motivation is now gone.

Alciel/Shiro Ashiya

Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Drama CD) and Yuki Ono (Anime) (Japanese), Anthony Bowling (English)

Alciel is the last of Maou's four demon generals, as well as the most loyal, following his lord's escape to Earth. He tends to be more disdainful of humans than Maou, but because he is utterly loyal he follows his lord unquestioningly....Almost unquestioningly, as he tends to get exasperated at Maou's poor spending habits.

• Affably Evil: He believes more strongly in acting like a proper demon than his boss, but quickly settles into the role of an extremely polite House Husband.
• Apologizes a Lot: He is constantly doing this, feeling he's not worthy of Maou's constant kindness.
• Badass Cape: His general's mantle from Ente Isla. He even goes back to his apartment in the middle of a fight to go put it on. He does it again in episode 12; however, he gets to the battle well after it's been won, and Maou immediately asks why he even bothered to show up at that point.
• Berserk Button: Spending more money than needed. Which is why he's more than a little sore at Lucifer.
• Break Her Heart to Save Her: Does this to Rika in volume 13 when she gave a Love Confession. However, Sariel gave him a pep talk about this issue (and general case of Mayfly–December Romance), that might have started to change his mind.
• Brought Down to Badass: Volume 5.5 shows while Alciel can't help against demons and angels in his current powerless state, he's not in any way incapable.
• Butt-Monkey: Constantly gets sick or injured and always seems to get the short end of whatever shenanigans the gang's involved in.
• Car Fu: Slams Olba into a wall with thrown cars.
• Character Name Alias: Alciel becomes Shiro Ashiya.
• Consummate Liar: Emi calls him over to help clear up the misunderstandings Rika has about her relationship with Maou. Out of nowhere, he spins together a very well put together and consistent story full of emotional appeal that Rika buys hook, line and sinker. Even Suzuno gets swept along by the story despite knowing for a fact that it's at best very metaphorical and at worst complete nonsense. Emi is both somewhat impressed and mildly dreading the outcome of this because she knows that he just saved her ass, meaning she owes him a pretty big favor after this.
• Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He may act dorky at times but he still is one of Satan's generals and he throws cars at people.
• Delicate and Sickly: He seems to be bedridden or sick quite often later in the series. This is thanks to eating too much food with sacred power in it. However, the novel slightly disagrees on this: for high-ranking demon like him or Maou, eating sacred food is like humans eating food with trans-fat or cholesterol: probably bad, but not immediately so. Rather, he's sick due to injuries sustained from Olba/Lucifer fight and the udon just doesn't play well with his stomach in general.
• Demon Lords and Archdevils: The first of Maou's two surviving demon generals.
• The Dreaded: Due to his command of the East invasion force on Ente Isla, the entire eastern continent of Ente Isla is scared of him.
• Dude in Distress: Despite his best efforts, he can't put up a fight against angels in his powerless state and was captured by Gabriel in volume eight.
• Evil Is Petty: He believes that as a demon it's perfectly fine to steal the key from an apartment he just stayed the night. In actually he's quite generous if a bit stingy about money.
• Facial Markings: Has what's more or less a natural Mask of Power in his demon form.
• Hellish Pupils: Like Maou, he retains his slitted demon eyes while in his human form. A bit harder to tell since his eyes are drawn smaller than Maou's.
• Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Maou. They're basically married.
• House Husband: Alciel turns from Satan's devoted servant to Maou's fussy "mother". Maou is in awe of his ability.
• Indy Ploy: After realizing that Heaven is planning to use him as a scapegoat, he quickly creates a plan that lowers the causalities between humans and demons, informs Emi that Maou is coming while keeping the Archangels and Olba in the dark. It went off without a hitch.
• Major Injury Underreaction: Alciel is shot through the chest by Lucifer and uses his final moments before falling unconscious suggesting ways for Maou to save money.
• Marked Change: How can you tell when he has his powers back? Check the face.
• Modern Major General: Alciel's skill as a Great Demon General was competent, given everything we know. However, his skills as a house-husband are second to none. He can sew, cook, and keep a financially strapped household above water. Pretty much any skill that he might need, Alciel will research it, pick it up quickly, and then practice it to a very highly polished level.
• Motor Mouth: When Maou suggests living off only on leftovers from MgRonald's until his next paycheck, Ashiya goes on a full-blown rant which quickly escalates to double speed, complaining about how unhealthy it is.
  "Do you intend to live on hamburgers and fries until then? Is this Super Size Me? All that high-calorie, high-cholesterol food while you're young? I'm looking forward to seeing you ten years from now! Let's just hope your lifestyle doesn't kill you before we make it back. I must apologize for my incompetence, but you were the one who said we should swallow our pride for the sake of our return. You should be the one advocating healthy eating most of all—"
• Nigh-Invulnerability: Can withstand blows from even Emilia's sword with nary a scratch. The novels state that he does not actually have much magical talent, but he proved his worth even amongst the generals just by how hard his body is.
• No Hero to His Valet: Averted, he's one of Maou's most trusted and second oldest follower and he nearly worships Maou.
• Noble Demon: He really seems to thrive on the whole demonic terror image, but even so he's loyal, non malicious and tries to prevent unnecessary damage. He also respects Emilia even if he doesn't like her. Volume 4 states that he was one of the few demons before Maou took over that was willing to talk.
• No-Sell: In the intro the show Albert slams into him and Emeralda petrifies him. They succeed only in pissing him off, with the petrification in particular only lasting about two seconds.
• Number Two: He's Maou's number two in military.
• Oh, Crap!: His reaction when Emi shows up at their doorstep in episode 2.
• Older Sidekick: To Maou who is only about 300 years old compared to Alciel's 1500.
• Really 700 Years Old: Alciel is about 1500.
• Serious Business: Alciel takes saving money very seriously. See Major Injury Underreaction.
• The Smart Guy: He's regarded as Maou's smartest general and he proves it in volumes 8 through 10. He was able to deduce what Heaven's plans were in a few minutes, tell Maou where he and Emi would be in one sentence and inform Emi that Maou is coming without anyone figuring it out.
• Spock Speak: Well-spoken every time he addresses Maou.
• Supernatural Gold Eyes: One of his few remaining demonic traits in his human form.
• Supreme Chef: At least Maou considers him one.
• Team Mom: Male example. He takes a supportive role to Maou, ranging from loyal friend to caring parental figure, and later becomes Urushihara's "caretaker."
• Tender Tears: Any kindness Maou shows to Alciel is enough to move him to tears, believing he is not worthy.
• Undying Loyalty: Alciel is utterly loyal to Maou, though at times he acts as a Servile Snarker or even a nagging House Husband. Pretty fortunate that Maou got to bring him along and not someone like Lucifer.
• The Unfought: He is the only general that Emi didn't get to kill. Heaven uses this fact to create a plan to create the idea that he came back with Demons to take over the Ente Isla and Emi returned from the dead to stop him.
• Unusual Ears: In his true form, he has Pointy Ears.
• Villainous Fashion Sense: Despite being almost killed by Lucifer and having his magic temporarily restored, Ashiya still took the time to go home and get his battle armor and cape before confronting the traitor. Then again, given that he has a tail as thick as his legs and it rips through his pants, so maybe it's best that he does. Later, he ends up missing a battle entirely because he took too long to get home and then to the fight.

Chiho Sasaki

Voiced by: Nao Tōyama (Japanese), Tia Ballard, Jill Harris ^note For the Simuldub of Season 2 Episode 19 (English)

Chiho is Maou's coworker at MgRonalds and has an obvious crush on him. She sees Emi as a rival due to not understanding the full situation. Contrasting the other three main characters, she's very sweet, innocent and above all completely normal.

• Adaptational Nice Guy: Due to being more favored by the anime director, the anime adaptation is more lenient on some of the grayer aspects of her love for Mao.
• Boob-Based Gag: Plenty of jokes are made involving Chiho's above-average bust size.
  Emi: (Examining Chiho's outfit in episode 3) Her dress is screaming "I'm young, and available!" And the form-fitting cut is there to emphasize her- damn those are huge!
• Bubbly Waitress: Along with being an upbeat and cute character, she's an employee at MgRonalds.
• Buxom Beauty Standard: Her large bust is often noted or commented on as a positive by other characters. When Emi and Suzuno see her in a Modesty Towel, they both can't help but feel inadequate in comparison.
• Character Shilling: The story often goes to remind the reader about how sweet and kind she is, even to the point of blatantly lying about her personality or bending the story around her. For example, she gets jealous of Acies at one point and the story says this is highly unusual for her and only because of how clingy the other girl is being, but up to this point the narrative has been depicting Chiho as someone who reacts to these things very easily and with extreme displays of jealousy concerning anyone she perceives as a rival, most notably Emi.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: Chiho gets easily jealous when Maou is around other girls who might get interested in him.
• Crush Blush: She turns bright red near Maou quite easily.
• Cute Clumsy Girl: She's apparently a first dan archer, but is still rather clumsy at work and breaks things rather frequently.
• The Cutie: Chiho is very sweet, cute and innocent, contrasting the snarky and silly denizens of Ente Isla.
• Demonic Possession: She was at least partially possesed by Laila in Volume 5, who gives her ability to use magic and forged an Energy Bow to help fight Gabriel and Raguel off.
• Did You Just Romance Cthulhu?: She has a crush on a centuries-old demon lord. Maou isn't particularly interested, but doesn't outright say no either and postpones giving an answer.
• Dogged Nice Girl: She often tries to flirt with Maou, but at best he sends some mixed messages. Mostly, he's concerned for her as a subordinate and doesn't really seem to know what to do about her crush, though he doesn't outright say no either. When he's forced to confront the issue head, he admits to himself that he doesn't think the relationship would work.
• Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Every time Maou shoots down her attempts to flirt. Which happens often.
• Everyone Can See It: Everyone seems her crush on Maou and the only reason Maou does know is because she told him.
• Genki Girl: She is very energetic and expressive, especially around Maou.
• Girl Next Door: She shares a workplace with Maou as his junior and is the only normal girl in his life. She's also rather plain-looking compared to the girls who came from Ente Isla.
• Green-Eyed Monster: Her frustration with Alciel being closer to Maou than she is helped power up Lucifer's magic when he was using her as a battery. She even knew that Alciel wasn't any kind of competition romantically, but because she's not close to Maou herself Alciel is nearly killed.
• The Heart: Later volumes have her attempt to create peace between Maou's group and Emi and Suzuno.
• Hidden Depths: She's a first dan archer.
• The Idealist: She's this, always believing that Maou is trying things better, and that demons and humans can coexist. Her "No More Holding Back" Speech to Farfarello in Volume 6 shocked both him and her teammates. Even Emi is annoyed by how convincing Chiho is (since Emi still believed in her mission, even if it was heavily rattled by then).
• Informed Attractiveness: The story goes into a lot of detail about how cute she is, though going by character designs she's really only on par with any of the other female characters.
• Joshikousei: Her Cute Clumsy Girl shtick is in full effect while serving food at MgRonald's.
• Ms. Fanservice: Not so much in the main series, but the ending for episodes 3-5 is just a picture of her in a pretty revealing bikini.
• Muggle Best Friend: She's Maou's coworker and aspiring girlfriend, but unlike most of the people around him, she's just an ordinary girl from Earth.
• Nerves of Steel: Due to her being involved with a lot of Ente Isla's issues, it's not that easy to scare Chiho.
• Official Couple: She is the one that ends up with Maou at the end of the series.
• Right for the Wrong Reasons: She guesses that Suzuno might be an assassin trying to poison Maou, but she's clearly just using it as an excuse to spend time with him, which Emi calls her out on. The fact that she is an assassin and master poisoner is a convenient coincidence.
• Satellite Love Interest: She starts the story as the sole normal high schooler, whose defining characteristic is her crush on Maou and generally only follows around what the rest of the main cast does. Apart from crushing on Maou and being friends with Emi, in terms of her role in the story, she's less an actor and more an observer who is along for the ride. As the Ente Isla business begins to draw closer and closer to home, she decides to work on finding a way to use her talents to be of more help to Maou and her friends in the grand scheme of things and while later on this enables her to act on her own more often, her core motivation of getting to be a big part of Maou's life remains the same throughout the story.
• Secret-Keeper: After episode 5, she is aware of Maou's demonic origins.
• Serious Business: She instantly explodes into Clingy Jealous Girl mode the moment she sees Maou bring a homemade lunch to work. And she doesn't take it very well when she finds out another girl made it, going so far as to call Emi to tell her.
• Smarter Than You Look: She might be an adorable high school girl smitten with the main character and a bit of a klutz, but her ability to gather, piece together information, and making informed conjecture is amazingly high. More than a few characters are caught by surprise when she came up with questions that is relevant to the situation, but something they completely did not expect her to ask, and Suzuno remarked a few times that she would be a great attorney in Ente Isla.
• Smitten Teenage Girl: She develops a huge crush on Maou without knowing anything about him except that he's handsome and competent. While mostly portrayed positively, she does tend to get jealous and possessive.
• Tareme Eyes: Her big, round eyes complement her status as The Cutie.
• The Team Normal: She's the only one of the main characters who really is a normal human from Earth. Gets deconstructed in later volumes as she realizes that her friends have more important matters to do and she can't follow them due to her life on Earth (and Suzuno and Emi starting to have feelings for Maou), causing a great deal of stress.
• Translator Microbes: The "Sonar" spell that Albert tried to locate Emi with targeted her instead^note the spell worked by zeroing in on those who thought of Maou constantly; let that sink in for a minute and it granted her, as a side-effect, the ability to understand the language of Ente Isla like a native speaker would. It's not known if she can read or speak the language, however.
• Unfazed Everyman: Is typically more shocked or distraught by the idea of having competition for her crush than the fact that her crush is Satan. Her comments upon the reveal were that she expected demon kings and angelic heroes to be more impressive and fantastical.
  Emi: "No kidding. Who'd think that a Demon King would work at MgRonald's, Right?"
  Maou: "Like you're one to talk little Miss "Thanks-for-calling-how-can-I-help-you?"!"
  Emi: "Hey!"
• Walking Swimsuit Scene: Episode 10, where Chiho tries to catch Maou's attention while he's working by wearing a revealing swimsuit. It doesn't work.
• Weirdness Magnet: It was thought that it was due to Maou hypnotizing her father, but it was actually due to thinking about Maou.

Lucifer/Hanzo Urushihara

Voiced by: Hiro Shimono (Japanese), Aaron Dismuke (English)

Lucifer is one of Maou's former generals and was believed to have been killed by Emilia. However, he survived thanks to the intervention of Olba and the two began to scheme for what to do after the war ended. He is a fallen angel and wishes to return to Heaven.

• Allergic to Routine: Volume 5 shows that Lucifer joined Maou as he felt bored by how Heaven never changed.
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Wages war on mankind, slaughtering entire villages in the process. Robs people to feed on their fear. Blasts holes through his own former allies in order to fulfill his own selfish goals. Picks up a girl's lost wallet and goes through it for information. And of course, it's this last one that disgusts people. Especially when Emi learns he used up her food coupon. In the LN, it's extended a bit further: She doesn't care until she realizes that Lucifer used up her food coupon. That was the last straw.
• Batman Gambit: He helps Olba and Sariel increase the size of the moon, knowing full well that the reaction it would provoke in the human populace would restore Maou's power.
• Big Bad Wannabe: Tries to throw a coup against Maou in order to return to Heaven, but after about five minutes of success, Maou begins sucking in all the power of the fear and despair around them and taking it away from Lucifer, who realizes he's way out of his league. He gets flattened as soon as Maou gets done with damage control.
• Butt-Monkey: After his defeat on Earth, he tends to be dismissed and treated as the butt of jokes. He calls everyone out for treating him like a jerk even for situations where he genuinely didn't do anything to deserve it.
• Curtains Match the Window: He has purple eyes and hair.
• Defeat Means Friendship: After losing to Maou in episode 5, he's seen living with them and helping them out in episode 6.
• Demon Lords and Archdevils: Maou's second surviving demon general.
• Deadpan Snarker: He regularly mocks the group.
• Dirty Coward: Acts smug and arrogant when in control of a situation, but the minute the tables turn, he becomes a sniveling wimp. Best exemplified when a fully-powered Maou is staring him down. After joining Maou, this trait seems to have gone away.
• Dude Looks Like a Lady: Pretty feminine looking, especially in the anime.
• Easily Forgiven: Betrayed Maou, shot Alciel in the lung, destroyed Maou's heart, attempted to drop Chiho to her death and launched an indiscriminate attack on the city. Further, his army was the one responsible for the destruction of Emi's village. However, after giving him a really nasty punch to the face, he's accepted back into the protagonist team by Maou and Emi overlooks it. Zigzagged as, while they seem to have no issues with him being in the group, he's treated with zero respect.
• Even Evil Has Standards: Even he is disgusted with Olba's hypocrisy in calling Emi out for teaming up with Maou when Olba was just working with Lucifer to kill them both.
• Fake Defector: Lucifer pretends to join in with Olba again in episode 12, providing the magic Olba needs to pull the moon closer to earth with the knowledge that the plan would backfire spectacularly.
• Fallen Angel: Lucifer has black, feathery wings. Though he has fallen, he wishes to return to Heaven and seems to feel the best way to do this is by being a dick and terrorizing people. This is also why he doesn't get sick from eating food with Sacred Energy inside.
• The Friend Nobody Likes: Maou views Lucifer as his responsibility and spares his life after the attempted betrayal, but that doesn't mean he has to like him.
• The Gadfly: He loves to tease people's weak points.
• Good Wings, Evil Wings: Lucifier has black wings for being a Fallen Angel. Which is why the others are shocked when he reveals that he can still have white wings.
• Heaven Seeker: His original goal was to go back to heaven. He later he decides that Heaven is their apartment.
• Hellish Pupils: Just like Maou and Ashiya, he has them.
• Hidden Depths: Though he may be a lazy NEET most of the time, he has shown the ability to give some pretty intelligent insight in serious situations (take Volume 8 of the light novel for example). There's also the fact that he can be exceptionally cunning if he wanted to be, like in episode 6 and 12 of the anime.
• Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His long bangs cover the right side of his hair. Shows how Lucifer is not one to be trusted.
• Hikikomori: Because he's wanted for all those robberies in the first novel, he has to stay inside all the time, so Maou just starts calling him a shut in as cover. He actually isn't afraid to go outside or anything, but he adjusts far too well to a completely indoor lifestyle. He even shuts himself into Maou's closet later.
• Hollywood Hacking: Averted. He can connect to Emi's personal station at her work and contact cellphones using a laptop, both of which are reasonable things to accomplish with programs like Skype, which he is seen using in the anime. He even calls out Maou in the manga for thinking he can simply hack into whatever he wants with a computer that's two operating systems behind because that's what happens in the movies.
• Hoist by His Own Petard: Loses in the first arc because after beating a powerless Maou, he decided to get a little too flashy and terrified the huge crowed around him, restoring Maou's powers. Not even an accident: There was no reason to cause that much damage, but he likes breaking stuff.
• Immortal Immaturity: He's so old he can't remember his precise age, but is easily the least mature of the main cast.
• Insane Troll Logic: His idea of winning his way back to Heaven is by terrorizing and killing innocent people. It turns out to actually make sense in context. Heaven wants Maou dead for following in the Great King Satan's footsteps and Emilia dead for both being the daughter of an angel and holding a piece of Yesod. From the way the rest of the angels act throughout the light novels, it's obvious none of them care about the lengths they have to go to succeed in doing that.
• It Amused Me: His loyalty is fickle because he only joins a side to relieve himself of boredom, and would quickly turn on them when he gets bored again. Best shown in Volume 0-II. Him becoming a NEET is probably the best thing possible since the Internet seems to be a permanent solution to his boredom.
• Jerkass: He's sarcastic, rude, selfish and keeps trying to spend what little money Castle Maou earns.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Later in the Light Novels, he warms up Alas Ramas after she defends him from Suzuno and Emi's scolding, taking to babysitting her and scolding the other characters for saying inappropriate things she might emulate. And even shows that he does care about the group.
• Lazy Bum: Loves his new lifestyle as a Neet and tricks Olba because he likes his lazy life. Gabriel sarcastically said that Lucifer's job is that of "first-class philosopher".
• Let's Get Dangerous!: In Volume 8, he pulls no punches fighting off Camael and Libicocco alongside Suzuno in order to protect Chiho and her school.
• Manchild: He seems to be the most immature of the cast and as he is a fallen angel he is quite old.
• Meaningful Name: Lucifer means "Morning Star".
• Mr. Exposition: Due to being a fallen angel, he regularly explains to the cast about the various angels that come to attack them.
• Neet: Maou, Ashiya and Emi are helpful enough to highlight this for potential employers.◊ In episode 11, Emi calls him one after throwing something at him when he tries to get out of helping Maou with selling stuff their landlady mailed home.
• Nigh-Invulnerability: He survives a magically powered punch from Maou, the impact of which was visible from space, with nothing but a badly bruised and swollen face.
• Obfuscating Stupidity: Despite acting as a lazy slacker, volume 5 proves that he's much smarter than he acts. In Volume 18 he surprises both Laila and Farfarello with complex analysis of political situation between the Church and the Northern Continent.
• Oh, Crap!: Episode 5, Lucifer's face when Maou decides to finish the job himself [1]◊. Priceless. Also falls under This Is Gonna Suck.
• O.O.C. Is Serious Business: He surprises a lot of people in Volume 15 given how serious he took his job in fixing the spaceship required to invade Heaven.
• Parental Abandonment: His father Satanael died trying to protect proto-demons and stopping immortality research against his mother Ignora, while his mother abandoned him in Demon World.
• Playful Hacker: Developing a fascination with modern technology, Lucifer apparently picked up some computer skills.
• Pretty Freeloader: After getting defeated by Maou, Lucifer winds up crashing with and mooching off of Maou and Alciel.
• Psycho Supporter: Easily the most amoral character in the main cast. He's the one credited with burning down Emi's village and, as something of a favor to her, Maou basically offered her Lucifer's head on a platter at the end of the first arc if she wanted it. She didn't. After, he's kept from doing any damage largely by the fact that he likes being lazy and idle too much to bother switching sides again.
• Psychopathic Manchild: In his first appearance, he reveled in the sounds of terror he caused and treated the fight with Maou and Emi like it was a game while he indiscriminately destroyed everything around him.
• Purple Is Powerful: Has dark purple hair and his magic usually takes this form.
• Really 700 Years Old: Though we're never given a specific number, since he's forgotten just what his age actually is, although given the revelation of angels' history, it's probably somewhere close to 10,000 years. On paper, he's eighteen and doesn't even look that old.
• "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives a subtle one to Gabriel in volume 5 pointing out that Gabriel is just a fool that doesn't think for himself.
• Redemption Demotion: Actually inverted twice. Gabriel states that Lucifer was much weaker when he joined Maou than he was as an Archangel. And after joining Maou's side after volume 1, he's shown to be a very shred character and has helped a lot with his intelligence and power.
• Red Eyes, Take Warning: Surprisingly, not him being evil. But if his eyes turn red (and his hair turns silver), it means that Miki Shiba has visited him. For some reason, her presence has adverse effect on him.
• Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: In the Bible, Lucifer is the name of a Babylonian King who fell from grace.
• Satan: Well, sort of. Along with Satan Jacob, "Lucifer" is one of the many names of the Devil in the religious texts.
• The Slacker: He likes to live a lazy lifestyle.
• The Smart Guy: In a different way than Alciel. Due to his understanding of technology and of Heaven, he usually gives the cast the tools and information to combat the latest threat.
• Smug Snake: Arrogantly gloats over a seemingly powerless Maou and plays around. Plays around too long, in fact, and in far too flashy a manner, which ends up backfiring drastically. When a fully-powered Maou is staring him down, Lucifer goes from smug and arrogant to trembling with fear before him in the blink of an eye.
• The Starscream: Conspires with Maou's enemies to fulfill his own goal of reentering heaven. Unfortunately for him, Maou is far more powerful and once the tables have turned he's absolutely horrified and in way over his head. Lucky for him that he's in a mostly comedic series.
• Taking the Bullet: In Volume 8, he holds back a fireball that was going to kill Chiho and Suzuno. While he survived, he was taken out of the fight as a result.
• Took a Level in Kindness: The later volumes show that while he might not show it, Urushihara does care about the group. Even Taking the Bullet for Chiho and Suzuno in volume 8.
• Troll: Look at his face when he hacked Emi's computer, he clearly enjoyed messing with her.
• Vague Age: So old that he lost count.
• Villain Ball: He would have won during his Villain Team-Up with Olba if he didn't deliberately go out of his way to cause as much collateral damage and terrify as many innocent people as he could, especially since fear and despair restores Maou's powers.
• Winged Humanoid: Of the vanishing sort.
• Yin-Yang Bomb: Due to being a fallen angel, he has the ability to use both holy magic and demonic magic.

Crestia Bell/Suzuno Kamazuki

Voiced by: Kanae Itō (Japanese), Alex Moore (English)

Crestia was the First Interrogator of the Reformation (the "Inquisition", in an older definition) of Ente Isla, something she does a poor job of hiding. On Earth "Suzuno" poses as Maou's new next-door neighbor from a traditional family.

• A-Cup Angst: She typically hides it a lot better than Emi does, but she does hit Maou and shoots a glare at Chiho after Maou makes an unfavorable comment about Emi's small breast size in the light novel.
• Anti-Hero: She genuinely desires peace above all things, but is the first in line to commit assassinations, sabotage and acts of terrorism to bring it about. Without her and those like her terrorizing the western continent's kingdoms into actually working together, they would have fallen to Lucifer before Emi was even ready to take the field.
• Antiquated Linguistics: Thanks to studying the wrong things, her speech is very archaic and formal.
• Badass Preacher: Crestia is a member of the Clergy and is able to defeat angel grunts by herself.
• Became Their Own Antithesis: She realizes in volume 2 despite her ideals, that she's more similar to the Corrupt Church then she would like to admit. Which leads her to a Heel–Face Turn.
• Berserk Button: Later in the novel, do not mess with her vegetable garden.
• Bilingual Bonus: "Suzu" is the Japanese word for "bell".
• Combat Haircomb: She takes off her hair pin to transform it into a massive mallet.
• Confessional: She sets up one for Maou in Volume 9, where he confessed why he actually led and invasion and how he screwed up.
• Cuteness Proximity: She's quite smitten by a stray cat Maou picked up in Volume 7. Enough to get her own art page, even.
• Dirty Business: As a member of the Reformation, she's willing to get her hands dirty for the greater good. In the novel, she destroys a power transformer to shut down the trains in order to help Maou power up to fight against Sariel, though she's stopped by Lucifer in the anime where Maou instead gained his power from people fear of the Moon coming close.
• Embarrassing Nickname: Due to her short statue and precieved poor eating habit by Northern Continent standards, Din Dem Urs nicknamed her Mini-Scythe. She does not like this in the slightest.
• Everybody Knew Already: Maou, Alciel and Lucifer knew the moment they met her that she was from Ente Isla, and, what's more, they knew for the exact same reason Suzuno thought Emi must have. They didn't even have to discuss it among themselves. Emi and Chiho, however, were in the dark until she slipped up more directly.
• Fish out of Temporal Water: Suzuno actually did quite a deal of research on Japan once she got the opportunity. Unfortunately, all of it came from period dramas, samurai movies, and Showa-era documentaries.
• Fish out of Water: Unlike Maou or Emi, she's completely unfamiliar with modern Japanese customs or practices and is utterly baffled about things like trains due to studying more old fashion material.
• Fist Pump: When Suzuno decides that Emi is the absolute master of social convention in Japan, she begins copying her. Emi spills her cream before putting it into the coffee and Suzuno copies that as well, making a triumphant fist while cleaning it up since she got it 'right.'
• Foreign Queasine: In Volume 0, when Emilia's party were in Wathewlama, Crestia showed a lot of interest in lizards and lizard cuisine. She accurately describe how the Dragonicks are cooked, preserved, and what to drink with when eating them. Olba is quite exasperated by her passionate interest in them. She also works hard during the grilling and distribution of Dragonicks meat during Olba's plan because she can't wait to eat them too.
• Funny Background Event: Keep an eye on her when she's not in the limelight of a scene. She'll either be emulating people's actions down to the errors or reacting to new stimuli with awe.
• Heel–Face Turn: She ultimately sides with Maou in his fight against Sariel, after seeing how cruel the latter was, and how differently Maou acted on Earth.
• I Did What I Had to Do: She wrecks the Tokyo power grid and shuts down all the trains, reasoning that the commuter's rage would power up Maou. It works.
• I Let You Win: Her fight against Maou in Volume 2/latter part of the anime is her putting up a token resistance to fool Sariel into thinking that she's still on his side. The problem is that Maou drained his power reserve faster than expected. In the novel this results in Suzuno having to take drastic measure to repower him by blowing up power transformers and stop train services, using the fear and rage genearted by the commuters to restore his powers^{In the anime, however}Lucifer stops her from doing that and uses the fear of the moon to power Maou up instead. The difference is due to Lucifer and Olba not being involved in Sariel's fight in the novels.
• Ironic Nickname: Her nickname during the inquisition was the Deathscythe. However, her weapon is a hammer not a scythe.
• Kimono Is Traditional: She wears very traditional clothing and speaks extremely formally because she screwed up her research of Japanese culture and history. After Volume 10 she starts wearing some modern clothes due to Maou's suggestion.
• Learnt English from Watching Television: She learned about the Japanese language and culture from old period dramas. This leads to her acting and dressing very formally.
• Letting Her Hair Down: When she takes her flower hair pin off to turn it into her hammer.
• Living with the Villain: Yes, that dorky Girl Next Door is a trained killer. At least until she joins Maou and Emi's side. It is also revealed that the Maou residence knew from the start that Suzuno was from Ente Isla and was planning to kill them, but didn't really care because she was giving them free food in the process.
• Love Confession: Tried to give one to Maou in Ente Isla but is preemptively shut down. She still hasn't given up.
• Master Poisoner: Emi hints that she shouldn't bother: Maou and Ashiya are being friendly, but they're still demon lords. They'll catch on if she tries anything. In episode 11, a Flash Back shows some leaders of a heretical human group who drink some wine, only to then find out it was poisoned by her. She's also been poisoning Maou's household by infusing their food with sacred energy, but none of them actually cared because it wasn't enough to hurt them apart from Ashiya (while Urushihara actually gained some power boost, being fallen angel and all), who ate too much of it. Hey, it's still free food right?
• Morph Weapon: The flower hairpin in her hair is actually her personal weapon: a massive hammer that is almost as big as she is tall transformed from a unassuming hairpin.
• The Mole: She was planted into Maou's apartment building in order to investigate Emi and to attempt an assassination on Maou if necessary.
• Nay-Theist: Throughout the novels she comes in contact with many important figures from the bible and each time she realizes that they really aren't worthy of being worshiped. Hilariously, she mentioned a few times that the one she might end up worshipping instead is Chiho, of all people.
• Older Than They Look: Looks young but is actually 20 something.
• Punch-Clock Villain: Despite being good at it, it's shown in flashbacks that she hated every minute of her job in the Church, and even asked Olba why they had to kill.
• Punny Name: Her Japanese name, Suzuno, is a pun for her Ente Islan surname, Bell, since suzu means bell.
• Self-Serving Memory: When Chiho and Emi get rather apprehensive at the idea of visiting a reptile exhibit, Suzuno casually wonders if you can eat any of them then relates a story about how when she was traveling someone offered her lizard meat and she was unable to refuse. Listening to the tone of her voice and what she says, you'd think it was just a novel experience that ended up being pretty tasty. Watching the replay of the event, she's clearly disgusted at the idea, extremely hesitant and finds the food revolting. The funny thing is that this is inverted in the novels. See Foreign Queasine above.
• Smart Ball: She's completely oblivious regarding modern Japanese culture, but when she sees Maou decorating the storefront for Tanabata to increase customers she instantly deduces the type of magic ritual he just performed, even though it's one she would not be familiar with as a resident of Ente Isla. Well, magic rituals kind of are the Church's thing.
• Straight Man: Due to her nonsense personality, she's usually amazed at the rest of the cast's petty arguments.
• Stronger Than They Look: Easily carries a box of udon Maou struggles with. In a Flash Back during episode 11, she is seen wielding a giant hammer, which helps to explain her strength. Volume 5 explained that she used holy magic to augment her muscle, allowing her to easily lift a fridge by herself, while Maou struggled to lift his with Ashiya's help due to needing to conserve his magic.
• These Hands Have Killed: In a Flash Back during Episode 11, we see that she has killed people, although it was due to her job as Inquisitor. When she started questioning the morality of her job, asking Olba why the Church never made negotiations with the heretics in the first place, he shrugs her off by telling her to focus on the task at hand.
• This Is My Name on Foreign: Her name is "Crestia Bell" and her Earthling alias is Suzuno, which contains the kanji for "bell" (suzu).
• To Be Lawful or Good: She's a lead member of the not quite dismantled Inquisition (Law) but has long gotten sick of it at all and admires Emilia's (Good) methods, a scenario that comes to a direct internal conflict near the end of the second arc. It looks at first like she's choosing law by siding with her superiors Sariel and Olba, but she actually wants Maou to beat her and continue on to defeat Sariel as well. When she realizes Maou is too drained to even beat her, she stands aside and attempts to sabotage Sariel.
• Trademark Favorite Food: She loves Udon.
• What the Hell, Hero?:
  • Gives this to Olba wondering why the Church never accepts responsibility and doesn't even try to meet the "heretics" half-way. He just tells her that she shouldn't question orders and gives her a list of more heretics to kill.
  • Then pretty much every member of the main casts gives her one after the other in the last episode. Claiming how she fights for good but yet betrays people that care for her and does things she knows are morally wrong. In her case however it actually takes its toll till she decides to do a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Then finally gives one to Sariel, stating how he offers a false peace and claims to be good but does all these horrible things.
• Yamato Nadeshiko: She acts extremely formal and traditional. Not necessarily because she's actually like that, but because her head has been filled with ancient ideas about Japan and old dramas. Even after being corrected about modern society, she's already gained a preference for acting/speaking formally, being traditional and wearing kimonos.
• You Are in Command Now: She becomes the de facto leader of the Church after Volume 10.

Dullahan

Maou's cheap bicycle that he uses to get to work. Dullahan is so called by Maou because it derives from the Japanese saying to "lose one's head" indicating to be fired. Maou was fired from several minor jobs during his first few months arriving in Japan before getting hired at Mg Ronalds. Becoming familiar with the Earth legend of the Dullahan, the headless horseman, Maou named his mighty bike steed this as a reminder to him not to ever get fired again. There have been three Dullahans in the story so far.

• Dullahan-I: Maou blessed this bike with a prayer not to ever be fired again. Unfortunately, Dullahan-I fell in battle against Sariel and Suzuno at the end of Volume 2 (Episode 12 of the Anime).
• Dullahan-II: A much upgraded and more powerful bicycle model gifted to Maou by Suzuno as a reparation for the death of the first Dullahan. Dullahan-II sports a reflector from the original Dullahan to gift it with the undying spirit of the first mighty steed who sacrificed his life for his King.
• Mobile Dullahan III: A Honda Gyro-Canopy scooter (called a Gyro-Roof in the novels) used by the Devil King Maou during his rescue of Emi, beginning with Volume 8.
