New Hanzo Academy
A group of first-year students at Hanzo academy who look up to their senior classmates.
Related to all New Hanzo shinobi
- Similar Squad: All of them have the exact same quirks as their senior classmates. Except for Seimei, who has no obvious resemblance to Yagyuu at all.
A 1st-year student at Hanzo. A descendant of Fuuma Kotarou, she comes from a historically righteous and good family. She struggles in school and is a frequenter of supplementary lessons, however she is constantly cheerful and positive. Having the same circumstances as Asuka, she feels a sense of affinity with her.
Wielding chains with shuriken attached to them, she excels at long range slashing attacks.
- Animal Motifs: Monkeys.
- Fangirl: Of Asuka's. She even buys and makes Asuka-themed merchandise.
- Fuuma Shuriken: It's pretty obvious that this would be her signature weapon. She is the descendant of Fuuma Kotaro after all.
- Hot-Blooded: Similar to Asuka
- Irony: While their relation in the game isn't really explained, Fūma's ancestor was historically known for being the sworn rival of Asuka's grandfather. The irony comes from the fact that Fūma idolizes Asuka.
- Jack of All Stats: One of the more well-rounded characters in New Wave.
- The Leader: Of the first-year Hanzo group.
- Little Bit Beastly: Some of her artwork in New Wave show her with monkey ears and tail.
- Long-Range Fighter: Contrast to Asuka's skills in close quarters, Fūma tries her best to master attacking from a distance.
- Scarf of Asskicking: Wears one similar to Asuka nonetheless.
Hijikata
- This is a game where, in order to survive, I cannot afford to lose!
A 1st-year at Hanzo. Using an incident in the past as a motive, she confronts her training with the spirit of Jouzai Senjou in her. She wears her armor for the purpose of protecting her comrades. Be they enemy or friend, she does not forgive anyone who doesn't respect life. Wielding a giant hammer, her fighting style uses large swinging attacks.
- Knight in Shining Armor: Her turnover is based off of this.
- Even more so, personality-wise. Hijikata wants to protect her friends, in anyway she can, for the sake of justice.
- Glacier Waif: Subverted. Looking at her large hammer and heavy armor, one might assume that she's a Mighty Glacier. In actuality, she's quicker than she appears.
- Principles Zealot: Just like Ikaruga, Hijikata also has a habit of enforcing the rules.
- Stone Wall
Ayame
A 1st-year at Hanzo, and the store clerk in Shinovi and Estival Versus. Above all else her own desires take precedence, she's a very relaxed, "my pace" sort of girl. At first glance in middle school, she idolized Katsuragi. She's doing well with her 'I want to harass you' appeal. She wants to kill her past self to move on, which is a very negative way to live. Her fighting style is martial arts without weapons, wielding iron gauntlets and iron boots.
- Ascended Extra: Ayame debuted in New Wave, cameoed as the Shopkeeper in Shinovi Versus, cameoed once again in Estival Versus, and then was Promoted to Playable via DLC. She goes on to join the main cast of Hanzo Academy in Peach Beach Splash.
- Bare-Fisted Monk: Unlike Katsuragi, she fights with both hands and feet.
- The Cameo: She appears in both Shinovi and Estival Versus, running the online shop for the newer games, but she debuted as part of the New Hanzo team in New Wave.
- Fragile Speedster: A complete contrast to her senior counterpart. Ayame is really good at dishing out the hits at a really fast pace, but lacks the stamina to withstand most of the hits she takes.
- I Hate Past Me
- Improbable Weapon User: One of Ayame's attacks has her tossing a giant coin as if it were a discus.
- Leitmotif: Ayame Says Thank You Very Much!
- Promoted to Playable: She got even bigger promotion by becoming a playable character in Estival Versus through Downloadable Content. In Peach Beach Splash, she's playable from the beginning.
- Skinship Grope: She developed this from Katsuragi.
- Spiritual Antithesis: Katsuragi is a Mighty Glacier whose fighting style specializes in raw power with her grieves. Ayame is a Fragile Speedster who excels in speed and uses more fast paced ninja arts and fighting techniques.
- Unexpected Character: Ayame being the storekeep in the Versus games & a playable character in New Wave was something players were already accustomed to. The unexpected part comes in with her reveal as a playable character in Estival Versus.
- Video Game Perversity Potential: The player can grope her breasts while viewing the store menu, much to her chagrin.
Seimei
A 1st-year at Hanzo. Fundamentally, she sleeps a lot. One day she placed her trust in a foretelling dream she had and enrolled at Hanzo Academy to walk the path of a ninja. She hates noisy people. Wielding a giant rocket launcher and simultaneously firing all barrels, she has a very flashy fighting style.
- BFG: Her gigantic rocket launcher.
- Curtains Match the Window: Blue eyes with blue hair.
- Long-Range Fighter: Uses a bazooka to blast her enemies from afar.
- Pajama-Clad Hero: Her shinobi turnover has her wearing pajamas.
- The Runt at the End: Downplayed. Every other member of her squad has some connection or similarity to the original Hanzo team, but there's nothing that really connects Seimei and Yagyuu.
- Sleep Cute: As stated, she has a habit of sleeping whenever◊ she◊ gets◊ the◊ chance◊.
- Sleepyhead: Her main character trait. She's even prone to sleeping mid-sentence.
- Small Girl, Big Gun: So big she can wrap it in a mat and use it like a full-body pillow.
- Stuff Blowing Up: Uses a rocket launcher to do this.
Muramasa
A 1st-year cat-ear wearing, mechanized robot at Hanzo. Abandoned on the side of the street, Hibari picked her up. From then on she's lived in Hanzo Academy. She loves Hibari and wanted to be useful to her, so she became a ninja. She wields massive Vernier on her arms that deliver shocking blows. Using them, she prides herself in aerial movement.
- Born as an Adult: Teenage version, as she was strangely created to look like a teenage girl.
- Composite Character: She's the combination of Hibari's early robot design, and Haruka's early character design.
- Expy: As The Cutie and a Robot Girl with amnesia, she's reminiscent of Chii.
- Fragile Speedster: Her fighting style, as well as deck skills, are mostly based around speed and getting the first hit.
- Genki Girl: Just as high spirited as Hibari.
- Meaningful Name: Her Vernier fists, which are apparently named for technology derived from Pierre Vernier.
- Ninja Pirate Robot Zombie: She's a ninja robot.
- Not Quite Flight: Vernier throttles are secondary control mechanisms on aircraft and spacecraft (which use vernier thrusters instead) that are meant to allow for greater precision in the air. Muramasa's Power Fists are apparently based on this concept.
- Riddle for the Ages: Exactly who created Muramasa, and what was the situation before Hibari found her? Was she cast aside for being a defective unit? Did something happen to her creator? What purpose was she originally going to serve? Why does she have cat ears?
- Ridiculously Human Robot: Uses this to her advantage to blend in with other humans.
- Robot Girl: The only shinobi who is outright not an actual human being.
- Shock and Awe: She's able to perform shock damage on her foes.
- Telescoping Robot: Her giant robot arms are almost as large as she is, and she somehow keeps them folded in to normal young lady arms.
- Token Non-Human: While all the other Hanzo students are human, Muramasa... well, isn't.
New Hebijo Academy
The newest additions to Hebijo Academy who, like Hanzo, look up to their senior classmates.
- Psycho Rangers: An obvious riff on the New Hanzo girls who all have admiration as a recurring motif (except for Ashiya, who like Seimei has no obvious connection to her predecessor). This team also deliberately switches up the pattern by having its 3rd member (Ibuki) idolize Haruka (the 5th member of the Crimson Squad) and its 5th member (Bashou) admire Hikage (Crimson Squad's 3rd).
Sōji
- What's the best thing I'm good at? Simple. I can go into a fight looking good and come out of it looking better than you.
A 1st-year Hebijo. Hailing from a distinguished evil ninja family, she was taught from a young age that strength is righteousness. She has a tendency to overestimate her own ability, anyone can see that she is obviously a narcissist. However, she doesn't realize this herself. She wields a chain-like whip with various sized sickles attached to it to slash her opponents.
- Attention Whore: Her cards were made to invoke this kind of effect.
- Berserk Button: Sustaining any amount of physical damage really makes her angry.
- She also doesn't take losing very well either.
- Expy: Zigzagged. Like Homura, she comes from a prominent family, but was never disowned. They both also value power, though Homura craves it because she's a Blood Knight who fights to feel alive while Souji was taught Might Makes Right.
- The Fighting Narcissist: Likes to brag about her abilities during and after a fight. This does lead to her getting a thick head sometimes.
- Jerkass: Even when she isn't being all narcissistic, she still manages to rub people the wrong way with her bad attitude. To further underscore how much of a jerk she is, Sōji doesn't make Homura look nicer by comparison, Homura is nicer by comparison.
- The Leader: Of the New Hebijo Squad.
- Might Makes Right: "Strength is righteousness".
- Narcissist: A big one. A very big one.
- Perpetual Smiler: Almost all of her cards depict her with a smile, mostly the psychotic type.
- Promoted to Playable: Alongside Yuyaki and Leo, Soji is playable in Peach Beach Splash.
- Slasher Smile: She makes this A LOT.
- Suddenly Voiced: Soji is the third New Wave character, in NW history, to be voice acted.
- Tsundere: In her Paradise Episode in Peach Beach Splash, she compliments all of her opponents on their skill after beating them. As she realizes she's being nice to them, she quickly backtracks in classical Tsundere style.
- Unknown Rival: To Homura, who beat her in the class president elections and then in an actual fight. Soji has been seeking revenge ever since. In Peach Beach Splash they meet again. But at that point, Homura has completely forgotten about her.
- Weapon Specialization: She uses a sickle whip.
Chitose
A 1st-year at Hebijo. Originally from the slums, her parents sold her off. She is extremely distrustful of others, comparable to Yomi's past. She considers ninja to be consumable goods and would not balk at throwing away even her own life.
She wields a giant matchlock rifle that shoots evil bullets.
- BFG: Her matchlock rife.
- Casting a Shadow: The bullets she shoots are strangely made of dark energy.
- The Cynic: Her Dark and Troubled Past made her unwilling to trust people at first.
- Death Seeker: Downplayed. Chitose believes that ninja are expendable, herself included.
- Declaration of Protection: She vows to do this for the The Instructor.
- Evil Weapon: Or, well, evil bullets.
- Expy: Again, zigzagged. She hails from the slums like Yomi, but while Yomi's parents died while maintaining a loving relationship with their daughter, Chitose's parents decided to sell her to someone else.
- The Gunslinger: Her weapon is a matchlock rifle.
- Perpetual Poverty: Similar to Yomi's past, Chitose, and her family had very little resources to get by on a daily basis. Unfortunately, this may imply why her parents sold her off out of sheer desperation.
Ibuki
A 1st-year at Hebijo. She adores Haruka and she will do anything to please her. Her strength, appearance, and family are all extremely ordinary, and she claims that she has the most common sense at Hebijo, however when she's with Haruka she expresses her true hidden feelings.
Using large "M" shaped scissors, her fighting style is to cut up opponents.
- Animal Motifs: Dogs. She's earnest, loyal and has ear-like hair flaps that makes her resemble one.
- Combat Sadomasochist: The only character who can give Ryōna a run for her money.
- Hypocritical Humor: A running gag when it comes to her:
- Looks down on Soji and Ashiya for being vain and Basho for being a Reluctant Warrior, insisting she's the only normal one. Yeah, her.
- Mocks Ayame for being so obsessed with Katsuragi. She isn't the one to be talking about obsession.
- In New Link she calls Ryona a "weirdo" for her masochistic tendencies. The Instructor quickly points out she's the same.
Ibuki: Sometimes she says weird stuff about liking pain and wanting to get beaten, but she's a nice girl. I'm the same, you say? I don't think so.... - Genki Girl: Always happy and energetic, especially when her beloved Haruka is involved.
- Master of None: Ibuki's strength is said to be average. In New Link she's horribly aware of this and considers herself to be the weakest of the team.
- Only Sane Man: Or so she thinks.
- Shear Menace: Her weapon of choice are a pair of giant "M" shaped scissors.
- Slave Collar: Considering that she looks up on Haruka, this might be the intention of her collar.
- Suddenly Voiced: Ibuki is the sixth New Wave character, in NW history, to be voice acted.
Ashiya
A 1st-year at Hebijo. The self-proclaimed disciple of an unidentified God with the cardinal number suffix of 666. She adopts a haughty attitude towards whomever she comes into contact with. For that reason she has few friends. She herself is aware of her attitude and although she is using her full strength to better herself, she fails every time and gets even more aggravated.
She wields three chakrams, which she deftly uses to cut up her opponents.
- Blasphemous Boast: She does this a lot.
- Break the Haughty: She does this to herself. She's aware of her attitude problems and uses all her power to try and improve herself... and fails. Always.
- Cloud Cuckoolander: Ashiya is usually in a world of her own. She acts as if she is some sort of being from the deepest depths of Hell, while referring to everyone as mere humans.
- Cool Crown
- Evil Redhead
- Expy: She's basically a female version of Gundham Tanaka, but without the hamsters.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: Downplayed. While the new Hebis are her friends, she wishes she could have a lot more.
- Number of the Beast: Her god's cardinal number suffix is 666.
- Religious Bruiser: She apparently worships a god who may or may not be Satan.
- Rings of Death: Her chakrams count as these.
- The Runt at the End: Downplayed. Like Seimei, Ashiya lacks any connection to the original Hebis.
- Stone Wall: She has the best defense out of the other New Hebis, but lacks good attack power.
Bashō
A 1st-year at Hebijo. She enjoys reading poems in quiet places. She has a calm and carefree personality and is charmed by Hikage's mysterious atmosphere. When she's nervous, sometimes the tone of her voice goes strange.
Her fighting style involves using a large brush, which conceals a sword to stab enemies, and ink character ninja arts.
- Art Attacker: Not only is her weapon a giant paintbrush, but she also knows art-based attacks.
- Art Initiates Life: Her ability the Ink Ninja Art; with it she paints ink symbols to bind enemies or summon iron griddles for attacking.
- Cowardly Lion: During battles, she's clearly scared shitless the entire time, but she stands her ground.
- Cultural Rebel: Her family is strict and are known for using their paintbrush techniques for Bloody Murder attacks, but Basho is shy and uses her techniques for support instead.
- Fanservice Pack: Gets the treatment in her cards as she's drawn with curves far more comparable to Haruka than her canon measurements.
- Not the Intended Use: The Ink Ninja Art of her family is used to create Bloody Murder attacks by using the fallen blood of their enemies, but Bashō is a Reluctant Warrior that hates hurting others. She does learn how to use it defensively by using the ink symbols to bind enemies.
- In New Link she discovers she can use her ink symbols to summon teppanyaki ingredients, The Instructor has to remind her that she's supposed to deal with yoma and shinobi, not food.
- Reluctant Warrior: Bashō is a sweet, rather meek girl who wants to read poetry and calligraphy. Too bad for her that she naturally possesses the Ink Ninja Art of her family and her Jerkass parents pressured her into joining Hebijo.
- Shrinking Violet: She's just as bad as, if not worse than, Murakumo at this.
- Suddenly Voiced: Bashō is the second New Wave character, in NW history, to be voice acted.
- Sword Cane: Hides a sword inside her large brush.
- Warrior Poet: She likes reading poetry and calligraphy.
