A 2nd-year student at Hanzō Academy, Asuka is the granddaughter of the famous ninja Hanzō, who also serves as the principal of the Academy. Feeling driven to live up to her grandfather's legacy, Asuka is energetic and willing to work as hard as she can, training everyday to master the Path of the Shinobi. Her primary weapons are two wakizashis, and her Ninpo are based on toads, as well as having an affinity for Earth.
Adaptation Decay: Game!Asuka is portrayed as a hot-blooded warrior with a constant drive to improve herself. In comparaison, anime!Asuka is a klutz. She also has a fear of frogs in the anime, which she doesn't have in the games.
Animal Motifs: Frogs (note that the rival school consists of Snake Girls). Her ultimate ninpo in Shinovi Versus is to summon a giant frog that she can ride around on briefly.
For Great Justice: Being the only character without a Dark and Troubled Past, Asuka's main reason for following the way of shinobi is to protect her friends, her family... basically everyone from the shadows. For her, there is nothing more noble than protecting this world without expecting any thanks in return.
The Jack Of All Trades part is actually a significant part of her character — she realizes that everyone else at Hanzo is better than her at something, and constantly trains to try to bridge the gap.
Not So Different: Homura and her both have similar upbringings, but the key difference is that Homura was kicked out of her home for defending herself. Had Asuka been in a similar situation, she likely could of ended up like Homura.
Not Afraid to Die: Asuka explicitely state during Hebi's arc that ever since she has receveid her name as a ninja (Asuka and all the other girls' names are code-names), she doesn't fear death anymore. Life and death are two sides of one coin, to live is to be prepared to die.
Ikaruga is a 3rd-year student at Hanzō Academy, as well as the Class Representative of the Hanzō girl's class. She is a talented girl, daughter of a man in a large financial conglomerate, as well as a prestigious ninja clan. She has been held in high honours she she was a young girl, and trained in the Japanese tea ceremony. She is rather skilled at Japanese cooking, however, her own experimental cooking is another matter.Ikaruga's primary weapon is the Hiennote Flying/Rising Swallow, a family heirloom passed down to her by her father. Her Ninpo is centered around phoenixes, and has an affinity for the Fire element because of this.
Cool Big Sis: Fills this role in age and the responsible emotional-maturity that Katsuragi completely lacks.
Dark and Troubled Past: She was originally from a no-name, poor ninja family. She was adopted in a heritaged family to fill the role of the heir instead of the family's good-for-nothing son, and she's currently in dispute with her (completely insane) big brother over the inheritance of the clan.
Also, her fighting style resembles like the one used by Jin Kisaragi. Also overlaps with Actor Allusion, as Jin is nicknamed "The Hero of Ikaruga" and he has a cousin (Tsubaki Yayoi) who is voiced by Asami Imai. Even she use an attack that resembles Jin's Reito and his ice attacks, except she use fire instead here.
Glass Cannon: Poor defense and fragile clothing, but extremely damaging with attacks that cover a wide area.
Hime Cut: She grows her hair longer because Katsuragi says it's nice. It was said after a violent heart-to-heart.
Implausible Fencing Powers: While using the Hien Phoenix Dance, Ikaruga leaps into the air, grips Hien between her feet and descends down upon her target, drilling her blade into them as she slides along the ground, causing massive damage. How this is even possible is a wonder in itself.
Team Mom: Doubly so as she's the only girl of adult age in her gumi (obviously, Katsuragi in SV doesn't count)
Toku: Ikaruga performs entertainment like these under the name of KP Kamen (KP standing for "Kami no ke", hair, and "Pattsun", uniformly straight cut bangs). In the localizations, it's "BC Mask", standing for "Black hair with cut straight bangs".
Yamato Nadeshiko: After reading this far down the list you should know why: a formal and polite lady who wields a nodachi styles her hair in a hime cut.
Katsuragi is a 3rd-year student at Hanzō Academy, Katsuragi was among the first to join the Academy out of the current available girls. Hotblooded and boisterous, Katsuragi prefers to "act first and think later". A tomboy through and through, she wears nothing under her school uniform. Disregarding even these, her quirks are many and various. Katsuragi has a weakness for cute girls, and takes much delight in sexually harassing them. She loves ramen so much that she is now famous for being late to class simply to finish eating it.Katsuragi is particularly skilled in acrobatic and weaponless combat, particularly specialising in kicks augmented by her metal boots. Her Ninpo centers around the Chinese Dragon, and she has an affinity for Wind-element techniques.
Everything's Better with Spinning/Spin Attack: Several of Katsuragi's attacks incorporating spinning or drilling motions into them. While the most notable is the Tornado Spindle, one of the most impressive is the Dead Screw Dragon , which involves channeling an energy dragon around her body and spinning while drilling into her target.
Expy: A blonde-haired, hotblooded shinobi who loves ramen, is rather perverted, rarely thinks about her actions before she does it, lost both of her parents at an early age, and utilises the Wind element in their techniques? Sounds quite a lot like another hot-blooded, blonde ninja from another series.
Golden Super Mode: While everyone has this in Burst, as the use of Life or Death mode (Frantic in localizations) gives the girls a surging golden aura, Katsuragi, with her hotblooded nature and love of fighting, as well as golden hair and green eyes, deserves her own personal mention. Why? She looks and fights like a Super Saiyan.
Magic Skirt: Obviously not seen anywhere, but here's a variation; try a Magic Shirt. Despite it just being a normal unbuttoned shirt, it never reveals her nipples. You could swear the damn thing's glued on.
When it's destroyed, she has a bizarre breast-harness under it that shouldn't be able to stay on without the aid of either magic or lots of body tape.
Not Quite Flight: In Shinovi Versus, Katsuragi is one of the few characters capable of limited gliding. While unexplained in anyone else, for Katsuragi, her gliding may actually stem from her Wind abilities.
Stripperiffic: For some reason, she rarely buttons her shirt. This has to do with the fact that Ikaruga slashed open those buttons when she first opened to her. Being unbuttoned is a symbol of relationship.
Thou Shalt Not Kill: in Shinovi Versus, she is is really torn when Yozakura refuses to yield after their fight, claiming she will continue fighting till Katsuragi kills her; the catch is Katsuragi has to win her fight to save her parents. She regains her composure when Hikage tell her she much prefers the Katsuragi who have mindless fun when fighting.
It actually tends to vary, her deeper voice only seems to come out when she's feeling particularly hot-blooded or shocked.
A 1st-year at Hanzō Academy, Yagyū has considerable talent for her age and schoolyear. She is a taciturn of sorts, revealing little emotion. As a shinobi, is always resolute. She immensely cares for Hibari, her fellow 1st-year, and will go to immense lengths to protect her. Yagyū notably loves squid, always carrying dried squid, her favorite food, on her person. Her primary weapon is the bladed oilpaper umbrella she always carries on her. Her Ninpo is centered around squids, and she has an affinity for the Rain-element.
Glass Cannon: Her defense is very low but her overall attack power is pretty good and her secret artes do a lot of damage and are perfect for fighting multiple enemies. As compared to Ikaruga, she's a bit tougher, but also a bit less damaging — but has useful projectile attacks that Ikaruga lacks.
Hates Being Alone: After Hibari transferred to Hebijo to get back the Super Secret Ninja Scroll, Yagyū vowed to get her back, stating she absolutely cannot be without Hibari. Yagyū is not only afraid of losing Hibari, in whom she sees her younger sister who died, but afraid of winding up alone again.
No Sense of Humor: She is probably the most serious one about what it means to be a ninja.
Ore Onna: Uses exclusively masculine Japanese vocabulary in her normal speech, up to and including the aggressive-masculine "Ore" to refer to herself; this is considered even LESS normal and acceptable than girls using the gentle-masculine form "boku" in Japanese society.
Serious Business: Even card games are serious business to Yagyū if Hibari is involved.
Yagyū: -directed at the Joker card which caused her to lose- Unforgivable. This is your fault, you damned jester...
The Stoic: She's naturally very quiet, which bits her badly when she actually gets badly injured at one point.
Weapon of Choice: Her umbrella. The trailer shows her performing Daikaruganote Traditional Japanese "juggling" involving keeping a ball balanced on a spinning umbrella without letting it get thrown away by the spin. with a delivery truck.
A 1st-year student at Hanzō Academy, Hibari joined at the same time as Yagyū. She comes from a long line of Shinobi, but is rather self-conscious of her own limits as compared to her ancestors. Despite good intentions, she generally ends up as an accidental troublemaker. Due to being rather weak in combat (and well aware of it), Hibari makes up for it with her wits. With a deceptive fighting style, ever shifting in appearance, her Ninpo centers around rabbits. Hibari's elemental affinity is that of Lightning.
Kiriya is the Shinobi class instructor at Hanzō Academy. Born to a long line if shinobi, it was decided at an early age that Kiriya would follow suit. Despite having immense aptitude for the way of the Shinobi, Kiriya grew disgusted with the way that shinobi had to risk their lives with each mission, and turned to the teaching department instead. He is a taciturn and strict teacher, but this is because of his high expectations for his students.
Badass: Allegedly, he was an elite shinobi in the past, and the "best of the best". Whatever skills he had besides explosive teleportation are never really shown.
Cool Teacher: A shinobi sensei dressed in a black suit, with white hair, whose primary method of coming and going is body flickering, Kiriya definitely qualifies.
Expy: After he fails to become a Magus, apparently Kariya become a master ninja instead.
He also seems to be quite similar to Kakashi. A white-haired ninja master, who is now a stern teacher, raised from his youth to be a ninja, his parents were even ninja as well. To top it off, he even lost someone important to him on a mission in the past, and it pretty much has affected him throughout the rest of his life.
Informed Ability: Despite being described as an elite, he's rarely seen doing anything in the games or the anime. And, despite being a shinobi, he seems to be rather easy to trick, having been duped by the Hebi girls at least twice, and just one clash with Suzune from Hebi left him injured in the anime. Perhaps being retired dulled his skills?
My Greatest Failure: He considers saving Rin during her Shinobi test (he saved her from getting shot by a doll before anyone could notice, thus allowing her to pass her test), allowing her to become a full-fledged Shinobi and leading to her dying on a mission a few months later, as the greatest failure of his life.
Retired Badass: According to Rin, Kiriya used to be an elite ninja, the best of the best. He's currently working as a shinobi sensei now, because, while missions pose the risk of death, teaching doesn't.
Smoke Out: At least in anime, he really likes to use smoke bombs to either enter or exit places.
Badass Grandpa: He may be retired, but he still is a legendary shinobi.
Dirty Old Man: Not really so on the Hanzo side of Burst, but definitely on the Hebijo side. In fact, he's the one responsible for the Hanzo students getting their cover blown when they all meet up for the first time at the hot springs and he quite openly peeps on them.
Exceptionally Tolerant: there must be darkness for light to exist. Take a fondness on Homura (for more than just seeing her in the hot springs even).
The Bet: incite Yumi to defy Hanzo academy. He has to be awfully confident in his grand-daughter's abilities so that nobody will die.
Megaton Punch: Her signature move. If she catches you on the ground when her HP is in the red, she will use an unavoidable, One-Hit Kill dragon punch.
Mighty Glacier: She hits likes a tank and has a lot more health than anyone else, but she is also the slowest character out of the whole cast, so keeping a high hit count with her during a mission is harder to do.
Nice Hat: The one that looks like Kujo Jotaro's. Wearing it changes her normally-blonde hair to black, thus creating her signature look.
The dark layer vanishing is fitting, as upon suffering clothing damage Daidouji loses her wild, menacing black wig, revealing her much more feminine golden locks of hair, making her look overall less intimidating.
Blood Knight: Homura has stated in the first game that she fights to feel alive. After she got disowned by her parents, she felt she lacked a purpose in life. Fighting allows her to truly feel alive.
Homura:When the people I loved most cast me aside, my heart stopped beating. But when I am in the middle of a fight, I realize that I can still feel alive. Yes. If I'm not fighting as a shinobi, I'm no better than a corpse.
Dark and Troubled Past: She was banished from her family due to her killing an evil ninja who attacked her when she was still a middle-school student. She did it as a self-defense, but they shut her out anyway.
I Did What I Had to Do: Rather brutally Deconstructed. Her defending herself and killing the man who was going to kill her results in her being thrown out and loses the chance to become a Light Shinobi and while she defended herself, it's shown she herself does not exactly justify it.
Katanas Are Just Better: Why yes, they are so good that she wields six of them. She carries a seventh katana, which she doesn't normally use unless she becomes Crimson Homura, in which case she primary uses it.
Pet the Dog: Homura reveals she wears frilly pink pajamas, so that Mirai will feel less insecure about her bear-print panties, in addition to telling her that, at Hebijo, seniority doesn't matter, they are all comrades.
BFS: Has a gigantic Claymore, which is both thick AND long, and she can extend it even further in one of her ninpos.
Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She's very polite, sweet and always sports a pleasant smile. But, it masks her aggressive and sadistic side.
Bizarre Taste in Food: Due to having grown up in poverty, Yomi has bizarre tastes in foods that she's had to eat to make ends meet, such as cabbage cores, hornet larvae boiled in soy sauce, but even she turns her nose up at earthworms.
Insane Troll Logic: Yomi believes people with money shouldn't be allowed to have good hearts, purely because, as a child, she never met anyone with money who cared about helping the poor like her and her family. She flies into a rage at Ikaruga, who is rather rich, but also takes time out of her day to help the poor after her last encounter with Yomi, which causes her to rethink herself.
Keigo: Always uphold politeness, even when she's delivering beatdown to someone while telling them how much they suck.
Onee-sama: Yomi convinces Mirai to call her "Onee-sama" (Sis in the localizations) because she's always wanted to be one.
Pet the Dog: To Mirai, when Yomi reveals she wears a stomach band to sleep, to help her over her insecurity with her bear panties.
Pimped-Out Dress: It's a gown, and it doesn't look like a combat gear or for that matter practical. When you've been stuck in poverty and you suddenly have the power to make clothing out of thin air, you would pimp that out too.
The Rival: She's determined to defeat Ikaruga, who (to her) is the face of the upper class.
Trademark Favorite Food: Everyone in the series has one, but hers is worth mentioning: if something doesn't have bean sprouts in it, she simply doesn't like it. She always talks about bean sprouts, even in battle!
Adaptational Villainy: The anime paints her in a worse light than in the games, where she is more prone of sporting a Slasher Smile and being bit more sadistic. In Haruka's brief explanation of the rest of her team, she claims she is a Child Soldier, where as in games, she was an emotionless orphan who grew with a street gang.
Animal Motifs: Snakes, and she even as a Cobra as her ninja animal.
Brilliant, but Lazy: She has everything it takes to be a shinobi, especially the drive to kill. She just don't feel like going the whole nine yards.
Dark and Troubled Past: She grew up on the streets, and was adopted by a female gang leader named Hinata who was killed in a fight some times afterward. Her signature knife is a Tragic Keepsake of her mentor.
Defrosting Ice Queen: In Shinovi Versus. Katsuragi is astonished when Hikage jokes about groping Katsuragi as a reward for helping with her training.
Emotionless Girl: Hikage is a very strange example of the trope. She claims to have no emotions, and is unable to feel anything. Yet numerous points in the series show that she is very much capable of emotion, she just appears to be unaware of it. As a child, when her mentor Hinata, the closest thing she'd had to a parent, was killed, and Hikage found her body, she broke down crying. A similar situation happened in Burst, when she thought Mirai had been killed, Hikage began to cry as well.
Expy: She looks a lot like Yuuka Kazami, even sharing some aspects of her personality. In fact, there's a lot of fan-art of both Yuuka and Hikage sharing their clothes or being together.
Flechette Storm: her Aerial Ninpo has her summon a snake-like construct made of knives that she flings at the target.
Fragile Speedster: To contrast with Katsuragi, she is very fast. However her Health is average.
Tragic Keepsake: The combat knife Hikage wields used to belong to Hinata, the leader of her gang and the closest thing Hikage had to a parent. Hikage took the knife with her after finding Hinata dead in a back alley, slashed to ribbons, feeling as if the knife held the woman's soul.
The Rival: Initially she holds the Nothing Personal principle, but after trading enough blows with Katsuragi, she feels that she's in some way aroused by her.
When She Smiles: She often has sadistic smirk, but when she's genuinely flustered, she is cute!
A-Cup Angst: Downplayed, but it's there. The fans often joke that it's the #1 reason that she's constantly bullied.
Antagonistic Counterpart: A mirror-match in a number of ways to Yagyū: same schoolyear in different schools, eyepatches of different designs and materialsnote Hers is more mechanical and modern, while Yagyū's is more traditional. in opposite positions, different types of umbrellas, hair color, etc.
BFG: Valkyrie sure counts. It's bigger than she is!
Butt Monkey: She's about as weak as Hibari when it comes to being a ninja, but she acts big and considers Yagyuu her rival. Yagyuu is a Child Prodigy. Yagyuu also tends to ignore Mirai when she appears, being more focused on something else, much of her annoyance.
Lethal Joke Character: In-game only, a pure ranged fighter with the ability to counter attacks just when you think it is safe to attack her at melee range? She is this in spades.
Her Ninja Arts bring more and more dakka as they come. In Burst, it starts with an anti-tank rifle, goes to multiple gatling guns beneath her skirt and ends with combining the firepower from Valkyrie and her umbrella. It follows similar suit in Versus, expect that her final Ninja Art is her pulling out a giant cannon on wheels with multiple guns on its side!
Difficult but Awesome: Like Hibari she's sort of strange to get the hang of at first, but eventually becomes very strong.
I Just Want to Have Friends: She genuinely wants to be friends with Hibari. Although in her case, it's not clear whether she means it in the traditional sense, looking for a lesbian pet rabbit or even both.
Ojou: You certainly wouldn't have guessed from looking at her. On the other hand, she doesn't like being an Ojou, she craves independence.
Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Seems to be an expert in both chemicals and robotics. Perhaps genetic engineering too, taking the... things in the test tubes in the opening of Burst into account.
Pet the Dog: In her own... strange way, after laughing at Mirai's bear-print panties, Haruka gives her a negligee to help her over her insecurities.
Robot Buddy: Ever since Versus, Haruka has a small battle robot hidden in her lab coat. It has piston punches, claws, chainsaws, flamethrowers and a notable AI, considering it's capable of fawning over Haruka.
Sexy Sadist: She's a total sadist and enjoys making sexy-fun of Hibari. One can suspect that there is a rape scene missing in episode 9.
Stripperiffic: Again, her outfit is the most scanty one out of the 9 girls. No, Katsuragi doesn't count; that girl wasn't trying to wear much to begin with.
Big Bad: For Crimson Girls and possibly Skirting Shadows. In the Hebijo storyline he is explicitly the one responsible for summoning Orochi and assimilating the Hebijo girls to do so, and can be chalked up to being responsible behind Orochi's appearance in the Hanzo storyline as well.
The sensei of Hebi Academy. Very sexy but cool-headed, her skills as a shinobi are on the highest level. She is very no-nonsense with students. On the other hand, she has no patience for training she regards as reckless, and always looks after her students' safety. For this reason she is considered trustworthy. Hebijo teachers usually deal in sending info and mission briefings to students. Rarely do they conduct actual lessons.Details on why she came to Hebiji are unknown, but she helps the school stand out, leaving only a few to question her.
Badass: A rival of Daidouji makes her automatically this.
Face-Heel Turn: She used to attend Hanzou Academy, where she was known as Rin. Like Asuka, she wanted to be a "super ninja" spreading love and peace around the world, and her master, Kiriya, wanted her to succeed. However, on her graduation day, she nearly died from a puppet shooting her, only to be saved from disgrace by Kiriya's intervention. This indulgence on his part backfired after she was declared a shinobi, when she was killed on a dangerous mission... or so the reports said. What really happened was that Hebijou saved her, and she switched her alliance to their cause to follow her own Path of the Shinobi.
Dark and Troubled Past: Shared with Ryoubi. They transferred to Hebijo to exact revenge on Miyabi, who they think was responsible for the death of their big sister, a Gessen teacher, during her mission to kill Miyabi in order stop her from using her power which was feeding youmas. It was the mission which left Miyabi comatose for years, and during which Rin/Suzune was presumably killed (she was recruited by Miyabi's father).
Defrosting Ice Queen: While pursuing the signification of Justice during arcade mode, she reaches the conclusion than Justice is Cuteness and decides to dress-up as a Magical Girl (Puri!). Her transformation triggers an Heroic BSOD from her fellow Gessen comrades.
Don't Split Us Up: The oldest of twelve siblings, who was Promoted To Parent after their mother and father were killed in battle. Her desperation to keep her family together led her to become a Shinobi herself.
Valley Girl: Of the Kogal kind. She is an outgoing and casual girl who is fashionable, wears more makeup than most of the other girls and can be seen chatting on her cellphone quite a bit, so she qualifies. Unlike most examples however she is not dumb. Look at Smarter Than You Look.
Vocal Dissonance: Look at Shiki's face. Those sharp eyes, the Beauty Mark, even her transformation showcasing a Grim Reaper theme, her ninja costume which seems to be made of garterbelts only, none of this would prepare you for the voice she has - it sounds like that of a small child.
Beneath the Mask: Pun very much intended. The rude, abusive girl who wears the mask is actually a ridiculously shy moeblob underneath.
For SCIENCE: She tries to get Shiki's support to practice and get some inspiration for the romance bits of her newest manga. Shiki flies for her life.
Iconic Item: Her Hannya masknote A Hannya mask is used in Noh theater and Shinto and Buddhist ceremonial dances. They portray the spirits of jealous women and are used to represent the complexity of emotions, which serves as something of an emotional crutch (see Split Personality below). In the New Wave card game, she has an alternate tiger mask that she sometimes carries.
Token Mini-Moe: She's even shorter than Mirai, though she has more well developed body like the rest of the girls. Her bust being even bigger than Hibari's. You can say that she's an Oppai loli.
Well-Intentioned Extremist: Hell-bent on annihilating all evil ninja after losing his family; begin to re-examine his beliefs toward the end of his life when thinking about what kind of legacy he want to leave to his adopted girls.
Ikaruga's elder brother. He's jealous of his sister's talent, often taking an antagonistic role towards her, despite her many attempts to build a more stable relationship between them. Because of his jealousy, he wants to prove himself to both her and their family.
Beauty Equals Goodness: He was first seen on the anime where in line to his status as antagonist, he has a positively deranged aspect◊. Contrast it with his official render for Deep Crimson◊ where he's a player character and looks really handsome.
Harmless Villain: He greatly dislikes Ikaruga for being their family's inheritor of the blade Hien and wants to take it back from her by force, but he's too laughably weak to do anything to her. However Ikaruga still feels conflicted about the situation as she simply just wants to get along with him. She even refers to him as Onii-sama.
The Unfavorite: His family thinks he's good for nothing and not capable of inheriting their heirloom katana Hien. Which was why they adopted Ikaruga who was far more talented, to inherit the blade and succeed the family as a strong shinobi. He is not pleased with this, and tries to take Hien from Ikaruga, believing he is the rightful inheritor of it. Though his efforts are always futile.
