Hanzō National Academy

The Just

Through constant battles with their Hebijo rivals, the girls of Hanzō National Academy forged lifelong friendships - not only with each other as a team, but with their rivals as competitors and equals. Six months ago, the Hanzō girls scored a decisive victory, defeating the Hebijo Elites and driving them into hiding. Since then, peace has reigned at Hanzō National Academy, and the girls have devoted themselves to their training. But the times of peace have changed, as new threats and old are about to converge in a battle royale the likes of which the shinobi world has never seen.

Related to all Hanzo Academy shinobi

  • Berserk Button: Since they formed a bond with the Crimson Squad, they'll get really pissed if you insult any one of them.
  • Big Damn Heroes: There have been some instances of this. The first one was there rescue and retrieval of Hibari from Hebijo. Another was Ikaruga and the others saving Asuka from Murakumo when she was about to kill her.
  • Catch Phrase: "Let's dance!" and "I'll show you a dance cloaked in shadows!"
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Subverted. They throw wash bins at Hanzo for perving on them at the hot springs, but being the legendary ninja he is, he dodges every last one. He does back off when Asuka threatens to "tell grandma". This has happened three times already.
  • The Protagonist: They are the main characters of the series and generally get the most focus.

    Asuka

Asuka

We're the same in so many ways, and yet so different. We come to blows whenever we meet. Maybe it's fate.

Asuka. Terrific Heroine. No Personality.
click here  to see her in uniform.

A second year student at Hanzo National Academy. Her grandfather Hanzō is renowned as a legendary shinobi, and is the academy’s namesake. Given her remarkable pedigree, she has a lot of hidden potential within her and bears a strong sense of justice.

No matter how hard she may try, though, she can never quite bring herself to look as intimidating as she wants to, likely due to her overall bright and positive personality. Over time, she’s become a source of immense moral support for her friends and fellow shinobi.

Her primary weapons are two wakizashis, and her Ninpo are based on toads, as well as having an affinity for Earth.

Date of Birth: 8th of September
Age: 17
Blood Type: A
Height: 155 cm (5'1")
Measurements: B90, W57, H85 (35-22-33)
Hobby: Training
Favorite Food: Futomaki Rolls
Ninja Animal: Toad
Weapon: Dual Wakizashi
VA: Hitomi Harada (Japanese), Felecia Angelle (English)

  • Adaptational Wimp: In the games, Asuka is portrayed as a hot-blooded warrior with a constant drive to improve herself. In comparison to the anime, Asuka is a klutz. She also has a fear of frogs in the anime, which she doesn't have in the games (but she does get over it with a little help from Ikaruga).
  • Animal Motifs: Frogs (note that the rival school consists of Snake Girls). Her ultimate ninpo in Shinovi Versus is to summon a giant frog that she can ride around on briefly.
  • Brown Eyes
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Not nearly as bad as the other girls, to the point where it's nearly nonexistent, but the intro of the anime shows she wasn't always happy with being forced to be a shinobi from a VERY young age. And, while she loves her Grandpa, her parents aren't anywhere to be seen either.
  • D-Cup Distress: Worries that her breasts might be growing too big.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: The only ninja who runs on this more than the orange-clothed blondie himself, Asuka will happily befriend literally anyone, good shinobi or bad shinobi. It's gotten to the point where Homura has realized Asuka doesn't care who she is friends with. Homura herself is a shining example of Asuka's methods, as she (whether she admits it or not) is Asuka's best friend and this friendship was forged through combat.
    • Heck, Asuka herself doesn't need to win in order to apply this trope. Yumi in the Gessen route of Shinovi Versus, who beat Asuka before the latter challenged to a quick rematch, straight out asks if they can be friends after the battle is over.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Asuka specializes in earth attacks in some of her ninja arts. This is especially evident in SK 2.
  • Dual Wielding: Uses two wakizashis.
  • Family Honor: Asuka's main struggle in the anime is living up to her family name (and more specifically, her grandfather's legacy). One interesting symptom is how the pressure caused her to develop a fear of frogs, which she hadn't really had any experience with until ninja school proper.
  • Fingerless Gloves
  • For Great Justice: Being the only character without a Dark and Troubled Past, Asuka's main reason for following the way of shinobi is to protect her friends, her family... basically everyone from the shadows. For her, there is nothing more noble than protecting this world without expecting any thanks in return.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Ikaruga utilizes this trait of hers to get her to overcome her fear of frogs in the anime.
  • Frogs and Toads
  • Friendly Enemies: With Homura.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: She seems to be Good Is Dumb at the start but shows herself to be fairly smart towards Homura.
  • The Hero: Some adaptations assign her this role. In Burst she has the most overall missions aimed at her this playing this somewhat straight.
  • Heroic Resolve: toward her rivals.
  • Hot-Blooded
  • The Idealist: Initially; it doesn't prevent her to take her fights very seriously, though.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Yumi told her that Homura was in love with her, (Something that Yumi concluded on her own) And Asuka didn't seem to mind one bit. She was a bit surprised though.
  • Innocent Innuendo: I've learned a new trick! I can bite two sushi rolls at the same time! They're a little too big for my mouth, though. I can't swallow them both at once...
  • Ink-Suit Actor: She looks like a younger and more bustier version of her voice actress.
  • In-Series Nickname: Homura calls her "Jugs" in the English version of Burst. Hypocritical Humor at its finest, since Homura is only about an inch smaller.
  • Image Song: Futomaki Ninja in Bon Appétit.
  • Kite Riding: Briefly demonstrated it in the anime. The "Hipster" DLC for Deep Crimson has her using one as her way of transportation.
  • The Leader
  • Leitmotif: In the Name of Grandfather
  • Lightning Bruiser / Jack-of-All-Trades: She's a balanced fighter but also boosts good attack and speed and is probably the best overall character to use in combat.
    • The Jack Of All Trades part is actually a significant part of her character — she realizes that everyone else at Hanzo is better than her at something, and constantly trains to try to bridge the gap.
  • Not So Different: Homura and her both have similar upbringings, but the key difference is that Homura was kicked out of her home for defending herself. Had Asuka been in a similar situation, she likely could of ended up like Homura.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Asuka explicitely state during Hebi's arc that ever since she has receveid her name as a ninja (Asuka and all the other girls' names are code-names), she doesn't fear death anymore. Life and death are two sides of one coin, to live is to be prepared to die.
  • Second Year Protagonist
  • Scarf of Asskicking
  • Super Mode: She becomes Shinei no Asuka; it replaces her frog summon in '"Estival Versus'' as her ultimate ninpo.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail
  • Wake Up, Go to School, Save the World
  • Why Did It Have To Be Frogs: In the anime she is deathly afraid of frogs. Unfortunately for her, her family's summon animal is the frog.
  • Zettai Ryouiki

    Ikaruga

Ikaruga

If I can't pass the real test, my walk along the Path of the Shinobi ends. Everything I have established will have been wasted.

Rest assured. You will be disciplined.
click here  to see her in uniform.

A third-year student at Hanzo National Academy, she is the class president and the successor to the Houou family organisation’s shinobi line. However, she is not their biological heir, which has led to numerous feuds with her adoptive brother over who should rightfully bear the family’s legacy.

She was given special classes from a very young age and can perform tea ceremonies and cook fine Japanese cuisine, but when creating new recipes on the fly, her meals are… interesting, to say the least. Though typically gentle, thoughtful and kind, she is also a very proud person; when her emotions flare, no one can lay a hand on her.

Ikaruga's primary weapon is the Hiennote , a family heirloom passed down to her by her father. Her Ninpo is centered around phoenixes, and has an affinity for the Fire element because of this.

Date of Birth: 7th of July
Age: 18
Blood Type: A
Height: 168 cm (5'6")
Measurements: B93, W59, H90 (36-22-33)
Hobby: Reading
Favorite Food: Kaiseki; Japanese tea.
Ninja Animal: Phoenix
Weapon: Nodachi "Hien"
VA: Asami Imai (Japanese), Alexis Tipton (English)

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She is tall, has very long black hair and is the most composed member of the class.
  • Animal Motifs: The Phoenix.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's one for maintaining decency, even to her enemies. However, never insult her honor or her effort to maintain it.
  • BFS: Her Nodachi, which gives her a good long range on her attacks.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Ikaruga enjoys eating hornet larvae boiled in soy sauce. Apparently her father enjoyed them, so she had them many times in her childhood.
  • Class Representative: She's a stickler for the rules. This puts her into some clash with Yagyū
  • The Comically Serious: Her song?
  • Cool Big Sis: Fills this role in age and the responsible emotional-maturity that Katsuragi completely lacks.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was originally from a no-name, poor ninja family. She was adopted in a heritaged family to fill the role of the heir instead of the family's good-for-nothing son, and she's currently in dispute with her (completely insane) big brother over the inheritance of the clan.
  • Dash Attack / Videogame Dashing
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts
  • Expy: Her fighting style resembles like the one used by Jin Kisaragi. Also overlaps with Actor Allusion, as Jin is nicknamed "The Hero of Ikaruga" and he has a cousin (Tsubaki Yayoi) who is voiced by Asami Imai. Even she use an attack that resembles Jin's Reito and his ice attacks, except she use fire instead here.
  • Family Honor: Ikaruga was specifically adopted into a family that would not abide its Ancestral Weapon Hien being inherited by its talentless son, Murasame. According to the anime, there's no love in this arrangement; Ikaruga is simply there to protect the family from shame.
  • Flaming Sword: Ikaruga absorbs her phoenix into Hien using the Superb Phoenix Flash.
  • Fragile Speedster / Glass Cannon: She has low strength and defense, but is extremely damaging with attacks that cover a wide area and can do some damage quick....Very quick.
  • Hime Cut: Sports the traditional hairstyle befitting of a Yamato Nadeshiko, an Ojou and a Lady of War with samurai tendencies.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: While using the Hien Phoenix Dance, Ikaruga leaps into the air, grips Hien between her feet and descends down upon her target, drilling her blade into them as she slides along the ground, causing massive damage. How this is even possible is a wonder in itself.
  • Innocent Innuendo: Length is a factor, of course, but what matters most is durability. One round is never enough. It takes ten times in a row to satisfy me. Of course, they usually break long before then, and the worst ones give you splinters. Good training swords are really hard to come by.
  • Keigo
  • Kill It with Fire: Outright uses the Phoenix Blaze Flash to send a literally flaming phoenix towards her opponent.
  • Lady of War
  • Leitmotif:
  • Lethal Chef: Averted. While the food Ikaruga makes is so hideous one of the manga has to pixelate it, it actually tastes pretty good.
  • Minidress of Power
  • Ojou: Ikaruga is the descendant of a prestigious Ninja clan. Just not directly, however, Ikaruga does appear to be a distant cousin of her adoptive father.
  • Playing with Fire: Ikaruga incorporates the element of Fire into her ninpo.
  • Principles Zealot: She's really big on rules and discipline.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: In her ninja outfit.
  • Rapunzel Hair: She has long, straight, black hair flowing down to her lower thighs.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Katsuragi and Yomi's red oni.
  • Samurai: She's closer to this than ninja.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality: Cool, composed and mature, but still a really kind and gentle girl.
  • Team Mom: Doubly so as she's the only girl of adult age in her gumi (obviously, Katsuragi in SV doesn't count)
  • Toku: Ikaruga performs entertainment like these under the name of KP Kamen (KP standing for "Kami no ke", hair, and "Pattsun", uniformly straight cut bangs). In the localizations, it's "BC Mask", standing for "Black hair with cut straight bangs".
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Her more refined and feminine nature makes her the girly girl to Katsuragi's tomboy.
  • Weapon of Choice: She single-handedly uses a Nōdachi.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: After reading this far down the list you should know why: a formal and polite lady who wields a nodachi styles her hair in a Hime Cut.

    Katsuragi

Katsuragi

Let's see how much you've grown. You know, besides your boobs, 'cause I can already see those.

Queen of sexual kicked-her-assment
click here  to see her in uniform.

A third-year student at Hanzo National Academy. She’s over-the-top and easily moved to tears, yet she has an older sister-like demeanour that’s thoroughly endeared her to the other members of her class.

There are some ways she might be too over-the-top to her classmates, however, as she tends to be very hands-on in an inappropriate manner. And while these "dirty old man" tendencies of hers can be a little embarrassing for her and anyone else around her, she also constantly strives to become stronger than her peers and spares no effort to that end. Sometimes, she becomes so dedicated to this cause that it even makes her come across as a bit stoic…

Katsuragi is particularly skilled in acrobatic and weaponless combat, particularly specialising in kicks augmented by her metal boots. Her Ninpo centers around the Chinese Dragon, and she has an affinity for Wind-element techniques.

Date of Birth: 5th of November
Age: 18
Blood Type: B
Height: 165 cm (5'5")
Measurements: B95, W57, H90 (37-22-35)
Favorite Food: Ramen
Ninja Animal: Dragon
Weapon: Nodachi Boots/Greaves
VA: Yuu Kobayashi (Japanese), Brittney Karbowski (English)

  • Absolute Cleavage: Her ninja outfit.
  • Armed Legs: In Senran Kagura 2, her boots have retractable blades at the heel which she can use to float.
  • Blood Knight: Out of all the Hanzō girls, Katsu pretty much enjoys fighting the most.
  • Blow You Away: Katsuragi incorporates the element of Wind into her techniques.
  • Boobs of Steel: Has the largest bosoms of the Hanzō girls, and her fighting style focuses the most on raw physical strength.
  • Dance Battler: Some her moves incorporate break dancing.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She is fighting to prove herself the strongest and re-establish the lost honor of her family, after her parents refused to kill Kurokage. The catch is that she hasn't seen them for years and they could perfectly have been dead for all this time.
    • It turns out that her parents are alive, but must fight to save them in the Battle Royale.
    • It gets even worse as Katsuragi either has to kill Yozakura to free her parents or they will die if she doesn't. She makes the decision of sacrificing her parents to keep Yozakura alive because she knows that her parents wouldn't want her to make that choice.
  • Difficult but Awesome: Being the type of character she is, she controls rather stiffly compared to the other Hanzō girls. Not only that, it's trickier to pull a long chain of combos most of the time. However, if one were to get the hang of Kat's Foe-Tossing Charge and timing to keep a steady combo, she can be very deadly.
  • Don't Think, Feel.: This is her excuse for entering the cooking tournament in Bon Appetit.
  • Dragons Up the Yin Yang: Her ninja animal is the dragon after all.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Well, it's not as if Asuka put up a lot of resistance toward Katsu-nee's attentions.
  • Everything's Better with Spinning/Spin Attack: Several of Katsuragi's attacks incorporating spinning or drilling motions into them. While the most notable is the Tornado Spindle, one of the most impressive is the Dead Screw Dragon , which involves channeling an energy dragon around her body and spinning while drilling into her target.
  • Expy: A blonde-haired, hotblooded shinobi who loves ramen, is rather perverted, rarely thinks about her actions before she does it, lost both of her parents at an early age, and utilises the Wind element in their techniques? Sounds quite a lot like another hot-blooded, blonde ninja from another series.
  • Extremity Extremist: Almost all of her attacks are kick based.
  • Finger Poke of Doom: Katsuragi's Strike Cannon flicks her middle fingers with enough force to create Razor Wind.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself Man: In the anime, she slaps Ikaruga when she starts to panic about how she can't undo the Shinobi Kekkai barrior.
  • Golden Super Mode: While everyone has this in Burst, as the use of Life or Death mode (Frantic in localizations) gives the girls a surging golden aura, Katsuragi, with her hotblooded nature and love of fighting, as well as golden hair and green eyes, deserves her own personal mention. Why? She looks and fights like a Super Saiyan.
  • Hair Decorations
  • Hypocritical Humor: Doesn't like being groped. She also doesn't like seeing people sexually harass others, despite doing it all the time.
Katsuragi: I'm always up for copping a good feel, but I can't stand seeing sexual harassment. I think you need an ass-kicking, self-defense style!
  • Hot-Blooded: She brings skinship to a whole new level: if someone won't open their heart to her the social way, then it's duel time.
  • Idiot Hero: Subtlety is not her forte.
  • Instant Awesome, Just Add Dragons
  • In-Series Nickname: Katsu-nee (Kat in the English localization), but only by Asuka.
  • Japanese Pronouns: Uses "atai", of all things. It typically indicates straightforwardness (re: Cirno).
  • Kick Chick: Equips greaves by her feet.
  • Leitmotif: Commotion of Blood
  • Magic Skirt: Obviously not seen anywhere, but here's a variation; try a Magic Shirt. Despite it just being a normal unbuttoned shirt, it never reveals her nipples. You could swear the damn thing's glued on.
    • When it's destroyed, she has a bizarre breast-harness under it that shouldn't be able to stay on without the aid of either magic or lots of body tape. To make things even more magic, the thing's very existence contradicts her insistence that she doesn't wear anything under her uniform.
  • Mighty Glacier: High defense and attack but a bit slow.
  • Not Quite Flight: In Shinovi Versus, Katsuragi is one of the few characters capable of limited gliding. While unexplained in anyone else, for Katsuragi, her gliding may actually stem from her Wind abilities.
  • Panty Shot: The source of almost all of them in the anime. She doesn't mind.
  • Rapunzel Hair: She has blond hair that flows all the way down to her waist.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Ikaruga and Hikage's blue oni.
  • Schoolgirl Lesbian: When someone transfers to the ninja class, the first thing she looks up is the size of the newbie's boobs.
    • She outright says that she prefers flirting with girls to romance with guys.
  • Signature Laugh: EEE SHI SHI SHI SHI
  • Skinship Grope: Accepted as a daily occurence in Hanzo. The only one who minds is Yagyū, and only when she does it to Hibari.
  • Stripperiffic: For some reason, she rarely buttons her shirt. This has to do with the fact that Ikaruga slashed open those buttons when she first opened to her. Being unbuttoned is a symbol of relationship.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: in Shinovi Versus, she is is really torn when Yozakura refuses to yield after their fight, claiming she will continue fighting till Katsuragi kills her; the catch is Katsuragi has to win her fight to save her parents. She regains her composure when Hikage tell her she much prefers the Katsuragi who have mindless fun when fighting.
  • Tomboy: She's described as this, but it's more like she's a perverted boy born into a feminine-looking girl's body.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Her hotblooded and brash attitude makes her the tomboy to Ikaruga's girly girl.
  • Tricked-Out Shoes: Not only are her greaves razor-sharp, they can also pull out what are essentially wind spurs.
  • Underboobs: featured gloriously in episode 4 of the anime adaptation.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Her voice is fairly deep for a girl whose supposed to be 18.
    • It actually tends to vary, her deeper voice only seems to come out when she's feeling particularly hot-blooded or shocked
  • Weapon of Choice: Metal boots.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: Her moves are either kickboxing, or this. Her Shinobi Barrier is a wrestling ring.

    Yagyū

Yagyū

Your desires mean nothing. I won't lose.

Nobody touches her precious Hibari
click here  to see her in uniform.

A first-year student at Hanzo National Academy. She’s only just begun her training this year, yet she knows that the shinobi world is ruthless and is fully prepared to accept that way of life. This resolution is born from the considerable power she wields, but it’s approval she seeks above all else; she exists to be acknowledged by her fellow shinobi class members.

Although she’s rather taciturn most days, her need for acceptance occasionally causes her to come across as lonely. Being the same age as Hibari, the two of them have formed something of a sisterly bond, making Hibari one of the few people to whom she’ll willingly open up to.

Her primary weapon is the bladed oilpaper umbrella she always carries on her. Her Ninpo is centered around squids, and she has an affinity for the Rain-element.

Date of Birth: 23rd of December
Age: 16
Blood Type: O
Height: 158 cm (5'2")
Measurements: B85, W60, H83 (33-24-33)
Hobby: Sleeping
Favorite Food: Surume (Dried squid)
Ninja Animal: Squid
Weapon: Parasol
VA: Kaori Mizuhashi (Japanese), Bryn Apprill (English)

  • Always Save the Girl: Yagyū will always save Hibari, no matter how much hell she has to go through to do it.
Yagyū: I don't mind you leaning on me. Anytime you call... I-I'll come running...
  • Berserk Button: Do NOT, in any way, harm Hibari. Doing so is a certified death wish. Even jokingly, as Katsuragi found out in an early scene in SV. Apparently, Yagyū is the only one who can stop Katsu-nee's "friendly" gropings.
  • The Berserker: Especially if Hibari is in danger.
  • Big Sister Instinct: The reason she's so protective of Hibari. Yagyu had a little sister who died in a car accident. Hibari happens to look identical to her so Yagyu became extremely attached to her and swore to protect her.
  • Catch Phrase: Anshin shiro: Hibari wa Ore ga mamoru. ("Fear not: I will protect you, Hibari.")
  • Child Prodigy: She's very young and her shinobi potential is massive. And she has the attitude to match.
  • Combat Tentacles: Some of her normal attacks has her using a squid tentacle, and she can summon one to do the same.
  • Covert Pervert: Where she is usually really stoic, she can have some perverted fantasies about Hibari, usually accompanying with her nose bleeding.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She used to have a little sister named Nozomi, who died in a car accident years ago. The deceased sister looked exactly like Hibari.
  • Declaration of Protection: Frequently, toward Hibari.
  • Evil Eye: Yagyu's eyepatch conceals her right eye. Shiki refers to this as the 'Devil's Eye', a ninja art that seals a Secret Ninja Art into the user's eye, and is repressed with an eyepatch. When the eyepatch is removed, it activates Yagyu's Ultimate Secret Ninja art, causing her eyes to glow a deep crimson an expel cuttlefish tentacles.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She wears it to remind her of her dead sister.
  • Flying Seafood Special: In the Hipster DLC for Deep Crimson, her form of transportation is to fly on top of her squid summon.
  • Girlish Pigtails
  • Glass Cannon: Her defense is very low but her overall attack power is pretty good and her secret arts do a lot of damage and are perfect for fighting multiple enemies. As compared to Ikaruga, she's a bit tougher, but also a bit less damaging — but has useful projectile attacks that Ikaruga lacks.
  • Hates Being Alone: After Hibari transferred to Hebijo to get back the Super Secret Ninja Scroll, Yagyū vowed to get her back, stating she absolutely cannot be without Hibari. Yagyū is not only afraid of losing Hibari, in whom she sees her younger sister who died, but afraid of winding up alone again.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Deconstructed. She lives for approval.
  • Leitmotif: Believe in Yourself
  • Loving a Shadow: She became attached to Hibari because she looks exactly like her deceased little sister.
  • Mystical White Hair: Her white hair hints at her mysterious personality.
  • No Sense of Humor: She is probably the most serious about what it means to be a ninja among the Hanzō students.
  • Ore Onna: Uses exclusively masculine Japanese vocabulary in her normal speech, up to and including the aggressive-masculine "Ore" to refer to herself; this is considered even LESS normal and acceptable than girls using the gentle-masculine form "boku" in Japanese society.
  • Parasol of Pain: Which also hides a sword, at least in anime. In the games, the ribs of the umbrella sprout out blades instead.
  • The Quiet One: Rarely say anything to anyone, except Hibari.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Even with her Girlish Pigtails, her hair still reaches way below her knees.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: With her Ultimate Secret Ninja Art; the eye that is concealed by the eyepatch, specifically.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Hibari and Mirai's red.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: White hair? Check. Red eye(s)? Check. Pale skin? Check. Wears an eyepatch? Check. Stoic and quiet demeanor? Check.
  • Serious Business: Even card games are serious business to Yagyū if Hibari is involved.
Yagyū: -directed at the Joker card which caused her to lose- Unforgivable. This is your fault, you damned jester...
  • The Stoic: She's naturally very calm — sometimes too calm, as she never revealed getting badly injured at one point.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality: Stoic and reserved, but very caring and protective toward Hibari.
  • Tragic Keepsake: A variant. Where her eyepatch didn't belong to any one, she uses one of her dead sister's hair ribbons to tie it.
  • Weapon of Choice: Her umbrella. The trailer shows her performing Daikaruganote  with a delivery truck.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: One of the drama CDs reveal that she is afraid of theme park rides, rollercoasters in particular.

    Hibari

Hibari

My family was always nice to me, even when I made mistakes. All their sweetness toward me spoiled me for years.

Strikes her foes with cuteness and lightning
click here  to see her in uniform.

A first-year student at Hanzo National Academy. Although she was born into a long line of prestigious shinobi, she feels as if her skills are somewhat lacking. Espionage is her strongest suit, but she’s still a bit immature (like most blooming adults are wont to be) and tends to be the troublemaker in her shinobi class.

Still, she works hard in everything she does and is beloved by her entire class due to her single-minded attitude and entirely genuine nature.

With a deceptive fighting style, ever shifting in appearance, her Ninpo centers around rabbits, including Ninto. Hibari's elemental affinity is that of Lightning.

Date of Birth: 18th of February
Age: 16
Blood Type: B
Height: 160 cm (5'3")
Measurements: B80, W55, H73 (31-22-29)
Hobby: Video games
Favorite Food: Any kind of sweets
Ninja Animal: Bunny
Weapon: Ninto
VA: Yuka Iguchi (Japanese), Megan Shipman (English)

  • Ass Kicks You: A few of her attacks utilize her butt. She even has a combination attack with Haruka that basically involves both of them smashing their asses together.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Several of her techniques.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Completely subverted in Bon appetit when she ends up with so many sweets that she and Yomi can literally swim around in them and her ending concludes with the two of them still happily eating long after Hanzo had eaten himself into a coma.note
  • Big Eater: A bit of a glutton despite her small frame.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: By the Big Bad in the Hebijo story.
  • Break the Cutie: In spades in the second and third chapter of the Hanzo story. She actually ends up asking Haruka to turn her into a doll with her final screw up. She gets better, though.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: Her ninja animal is the bunny.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She loves cute things. It probably influenced her Ninpo as well.
  • The Chick
  • Cute Clumsy Girl
  • Cute Little Fangs: In the manga.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Shinovi Versus reveals that not even her life was as peachy as you may think: She never wanted to become a shinobi. However, because she was the only one of her brothers and sisters to receive "Kagan", she was made to pursue the shinobi path, not helped by the fact that no one got ever got mad at her and kept on helping her with a smile, no matter how much she screwed up.
  • Difficult but Awesome: She's extremely weird to play as and a bit silly, as well as a bit hard to get used to at first, but over time she'll become extremely powerful.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: She has a pretty peculiar iris, shaped like a pink flowery cross. Her eyes pattern is the sign of a family technique which allow her to manipulate people's minds; she has yet to master it, though.
  • Expy: She's basically Cute from the Spiral Chaos games, except having a bigger rack, compared with the original.
  • Flying On A Cloud: She rides on Ninto's storm cloud in some of her Ninpos.
  • Genius Ditz: Her skills need improvement combat wise, but when it comes to espionage, she has this area down pat.
  • Genki Girl: Despite constantly doing badly, she rarely feels down for long.
  • Girlish Pigtails
  • Girly Bruiser
  • Goomba Stomp: One of her weak aerial attacks in Burst. Requires precision, but it's well worth it.
    • Taken to the extreme with her ultimate Ninja Art, where she magically grows to gigantic proportions and then stomps the everloving crap out of everything on screen.
  • Face-Heel Turn: Subverted. See Reverse Mole below.
  • Hair Decorations: Her black ribbons.
  • The Heart: Pleaded to her teammates to not defeat the Hebi girls because they have a killswitch in them.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: The Kagan's primary ability is the ability to control both people and objects, allowing Hibari to perform a kind of ninja puppetry.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Hibari never wanted to be a ninja, and never asked for her eyes to manifest as the Kagan. If she could, she'd give everything away if she tried, and desperately just wants to be someone who isn't special.
  • Irony: Hibari's Kagan grants her puppeteer like abilities...meanwhile, Haruka, for quite awhile, wanted Hibari to be nothing more than her puppet.
  • Killer Rabbit: If she is competent enough. Being a playable character, she probably will be.
  • Leitmotif: I have to do something!
  • Living Emotional Crutch: She's Yagyu's entire reason for live.
  • The Load: Significantly underskilled compared to her teammates. It's usually Yagyū who comes to her rescue.
  • Magical Eye: Hibari's family's genetic skill is the 'Kagan', an eye-based ability that manifests as a floral-pattern in the eye around puberty.
  • Pink Means Feminine: There are other characters with pink scheme, but she embodies this trope the best.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Yagyū and Haruka's blue.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Yagyu became fond of Hibari because she looks identical to her deceased little sister.
  • Reverse Mole: Transfers to Hebijo in order to regain a lost item.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Her hair is pink and she's really adorable and cheerful.
  • Shock and Awe: She has to ability to inflict shock damage in some of her attacks.
  • Sweet Tooth: She even ends up swimming in a sea of sweets in her Bon Appétit ending.
  • Telepathy: In the anime, Kiriya taught her telepathy without her knowing about it, which manifested itself around the end of the anime.
  • Third-Person Person
  • Triang Relations: Haruka and Yagyū compete with each other for Hibari's affections.
    • The two challengers meet at a cafe to discuss their experiences with Hibari; suffice so say, it ends with an enraged Yagyu giving chase to Haruka.
  • Weapon of Choice: What does she use? Ninja Magic and a Killer Rabbit.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has pink hair.

    Daidōji

Daidōji

click here  to see her in uniform.

A third year at Hanzo Academy, Daidōji is a senior student who is well-respected by the other students. She possesses immense strength and agility and prefers to run into battle head-on rather than hiding in the shadows.

Daidōji typically fights weaponless, instead harnessing the power of her fists.

Date of Birth: 11th of November
Age: 26
Blood Type: B
Height: 170cm (5'7")
Measurements: B100, W58, H98 (39-23-38)
Hobby: Exceeding limits
Favorite Food: Meat
Ninja Animal: Tiger
Weapon: Her fist
VA: Yuu Asakawa (Japanese), Martha Harms (English)

  • Amazonian Beauty: She's extremely muscular. While her outfit does cover most of her body it leaves her torso exposed, which shows off her very large breasts, barely supported by a sarashi, and her well-defined abs.
  • Badass: She showcases her skills by effortlessly pushing back the five girls of Hanzo in the anime.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: She is one of few characters who lacks a weapon of sort. She only fights with the raw power of her fists with occasional kick here and there.
  • Bare Your Midriff
  • Boobs of Steel: She's incredibly strong (perhaps even the strongest) in pure hand-to-hand combat, and has the second-largest bust of all the girls: 100 cm. (Just 1 cm bigger than Haruka!)
  • Contralto of Danger: Very much so!
  • Digital Bikini: Wears a Japanese Fundoshi as her bikini if she receives enough clothing damage or if she's in frantic mode. While normally a thong, in Burst her fundoshi has extra wrappings that cover her cheeks. Likely due to a glitch of some sort, these wrappings often appear as large patches of completely untextured white.
  • Expy: She's basically a female Kujo Jotaro.
  • Heroic Build: She's much more muscular than any of the other girls.
    • Amusingly, her muscles vanish when her clothes are damaged or discarded on Frantic Mode.
  • Honor Before Reason: Daidouji refuses to graduate until she's had a proper match with Rin. Rin died several years ago on a mission. Has no idea that Rin is currently the sensei of Hebi Academy.
  • Hot for Teacher: In the Guren no Hebi manga, there's a piece of joke Side Story Bonus Art featuring Daidouji offering Kiriya-sensei some extra food she just so happened to make with Kiriya wishing she would just hurry up and graduate already. How this figures with Rin's Precocious Crush on him (as revealed in other adaptations) isn't much explored.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Where she is normally just technically this due of her refusing to graduate, the anime shows that she was practically the same size when she was a proper student as she is now.
  • Image Song: The Path Of The Raging Demon in Bon Appétit.
  • The Juggernaut: This woman's monstrous strength also makes her nearly impossible to take down. This is also evident in New Wave where she's an event boss that has to be defeated in one attempt. As you could expect, absolutely nothing will work.
  • Large Ham
  • Leitmotif: What to Protect
  • Megaton Punch: Her signature move. If she catches you on the ground when her HP is in the red, she will use an unavoidable, One-Hit Kill dragon punch.
  • Mighty Glacier: She hits likes a tank and has a lot more health than anyone else, but she is also the slowest character out of the whole cast, so keeping a high hit count with her during a mission is harder to do.
  • Nice Hat: The one that looks like Kujo Jotaro's. Wearing it changes her normally-blonde hair to black, thus creating her signature look.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Her model in Burst has a dark layer of Cel Shading applied to it, something that everyone else lacks. This makes her more intimidating, but it vanishes after she takes Clothing Damage.
    • The dark layer vanishing is fitting, as upon suffering clothing damage Daidouji loses her wild, menacing black wig, revealing her much more feminine golden locks of hair, making her look overall less intimidating.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket
  • Oral Fixation: Eventually started carrying a twig in her mouth.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Her Aerial Ninpo has her unleash one of these, with almost full screen range.
  • Rapunzel Hair
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Suzune's blue oni.
  • The Rival: To the extreme, with Rin a.k.a. Suzune. She refuses to graduate until she has a proper match with Rin. Keep in mind that Rin is declared KIA.
  • Sarashi: She wears the wraps under her jacket; she's also got a set of Sarashi panties.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Her gravure scenes in Bon Appétit.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Several CG images in Bon Appétit show her without her wig and in several regular outfits, and she is gorgeous!
  • Statuesque Stunner
  • Unflinching Walk: Daidōji is the only character who has this as her default speed. The only time she ever runs is when dashing.

    Kiriya

Kiriya sensei

Kiriya is the Shinobi class instructor at Hanzō Academy. Born to a long line if shinobi, it was decided at an early age that Kiriya would follow suit. Despite having immense aptitude for the way of the Shinobi, Kiriya grew disgusted with the way that shinobi had to risk their lives with each mission, and turned to the teaching department instead. He strives to build his students into full-fledged shinobi. Due to tragic circumstances involving a former student, he tries not to interfere too much with his current shinobi-in-training. Kiriya believes in teaching his students everything he knows, while giving them the independence to be strong on their own.

He is a taciturn and strict teacher, but this is because of his high expectations for his students.

Date of Birth: 5th of May
Age: 40
Blood Type: A
Height: 185cm
Measurements: B?, W?, H?.
Hobby: Training students
Favorite Food: Beans.
VA: Keiji Fujiwara (Japanese), Philip Weber (English)

  • Badass: Allegedly, he was an elite shinobi in the past, and the "best of the best". Whatever skills he had besides explosive teleportation are never really shown.
  • Cool Teacher: A shinobi sensei dressed in a black suit, with white hair, whose primary method of coming and going is body flickering, Kiriya definitely qualifies.
  • Expy: He seems to be quite similar to Kakashi. A white-haired ninja master, who is now a stern teacher, raised from his youth to be a ninja, his parents were even ninja as well. He even lost someone important to him on a mission in the past, and it pretty much has affected him throughout the rest of his life. And the lost one turns out to be alive and became a member of the Enemies' Team.
  • Innocent Innuendo: That softness, the white, beautiful shape... That hypnotizing jiggle... That silky texture, the delicate sweetness filling your mouth... It is astounding! ...Tofu. I have a secret passion for tofu. ...Excuse me.
  • Informed Ability: Despite being described as an elite, he's rarely seen doing anything in the games or the anime. And, despite being a shinobi, he seems to be rather easy to trick, having been duped by the Hebijo girls at least twice, and just one clash with Suzune from Hebi left him injured in the anime. Perhaps being retired dulled his skills?
  • My Greatest Failure: He considers saving Rin during her Shinobi test (he saved her from getting shot by a doll before anyone could notice, thus allowing her to pass her test), allowing her to become a full-fledged Shinobi and leading to her dying on a mission a few months later, as the greatest failure of his life.
  • Ninja: He has been doing this for a long time.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: He has the tendency to ignore the sheer presence of the fanservice.
  • Only Sane Man: When faced by his students' antics. He even glosses over Katsuragi's grope-happy tendency!
  • Retired Badass: According to Rin, Kiriya used to be an elite ninja, the best of the best. He's currently working as a shinobi sensei now, because, while missions pose the risk of death, teaching doesn't.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Always wears a pretty nice suit.
  • Smoke Out: At least in anime, he really likes to use smoke bombs to either enter or exit places.

    Hanzo

Master Hanzo

In order to gain true power, you must use both the katana and the shield.

The legendary ninja himself. Also a huge pervert.

The legendary shinobi and Asuka's grandfather. He is a master that is very well known throughout the shinobi realm. Maikaku Special Duty Intel Department's Special Secret Intel Agent. In other words, he's also considered the founder of the shinobi squad.

With the prodigy shinobi's name as the foundation, Hanzo Academy was built for the sole purpose of conditioning future talents in this ancent art.

He is a generally friendly person and is very found of his granddaughter Asuka. He is also the provider of the futomaki that Asuka and friends are often seen eating which he prepares in his shop.

Like his grand-daughter, he has the ability to summon Tree Frogs.

VA: Kanehira Yamamoto (Japanese), Bill Brooks (English)

  • Badass Grandpa: He may be retired, but he still is a legendary shinobi.
  • The Bet: Incite Yumi to defy Hanzo academy. He has to be awfully confident in his grand-daughter's abilities so that nobody will die.
  • Batman Gambit: He purposely instigated Yumi into wanting to declare Shinobi Battle Royale on Hanzo, and confirmed it as Wang Pai, just to help open their eyes to seeing a different viewpoint of good and evil, and was gambling his granddaughter's abilities and safety.
  • Big Good: Being the head of the Hanzo school, he's the closest the series has to one.
  • Dirty Old Man: Originally he didn't really shows shades of these, but later on it started to be become clear that he admires the boobs of young ladies. Though he doesn't go much farther than just groping some of the girls.
  • Flash Step: And Hanzo uses it to grope girls.
  • Exceptionally Tolerant: There must be darkness for light to exist. Take a fondness on Homura (for more than just seeing her in the hot springs even).
  • Kick the Dog: He spends his first encounter with the Gessen girls groping them and stealing the food they were bringing Kurokage. He even mocks Yumi for not being "pure" anymore before leaving. He was deliberately picking a fight, which makes him a Troll.
  • Power Perversion Potential: He knows about it.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Has no problem with Hanzo school students starting to sympathize with Evil Shinobi, and encourages the girls to come to their own conclusions.
  • Secret Identity: Of Wang Pai, the Gessen Elite's teacher.
  • Stealth Mentor: To the girls at Gessen Academy, as Wang Pai.
  • Supreme Chef: Runs a sushi restaurant in his retirement. A damn good one, at that.
  • The Trickster: With a side of Opportunistic Bastard. He tends to take advantage of the girls (especially Asuka) for his own perverse amusement. A good example is an anime special in which he tricks Asuka and Homura into "settling their rivalry" with a series of contests along the lines of "who can fit into their too-small shirt the faster?"
  • The Wonka: Flipping between legendary ninja and raging pervert.

Homura Crimson Squad

The Disgraced

For reasons of their own, the five former Hebijo Elites chose to let their school burn rather than defend it to the death. Six months later, they continue to pay for that decision. Together on the run, they live as renegades, eking out a menial living by day, keeping one open every night. With their school rebuilt and out for blood, it's only a matter of time before they face their final reckoning.

Related to all Crimson Squad shinobi:

  • Catch Phrase: "I sacrifice myself to the will of evil/our dance!"
  • Dark Action Girl
  • Dressing as the Enemy: In the anime, they wear Hanzo academy uniforms to infiltrate the school under all the normal students noses.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Collectively, they finally provide an aversion in Shinovi Versus. Instead of school uniforms, they wear street clothes that, while very flattering, do blend in just fine. They're even actually using them to blend in, what with being exiles.
  • Noble Demon: The Hebijo/Crimson girls are far from being as evil as they seem; in fact, the game goes to lengths to show that they are in fact really close to the Hanzō girls while being much more aware than them that they chose to live in a dark and violent world. Hell, "evil shinobi" means little more than being a mercenary rather than an actual villain.
    • Homura: She fights to feel alive and to protect her Hebijo comrades.
    • Yomi: Apart from her fixation on rich ojou-sama, she's probably one of the sweetest and most friendly of the Hebijo girls. But you have to be a good listener with an affinity for bean sprouts.
    • Hikage: She has multiple opportunities to eliminate Katsuragi, but she never follows through.
    • Mirai: She just want to be recognized, preferably as an equal.
    • Haruka: She genuinely wants to be friends with Hibari.
  • Villain Protagonist

    Homura

Homura

What the hell are you doing, tits-for-brains?! Nobody else can beat you but me!

The Crimson Carnivore of Many Impressions
click here  to see her in uniform.

A former second-year student at Hebijo Academy. She aims to be the very best shinobi, and will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. As an elite Hebijo member, she has immense ability as well as strong leadership skills.

While her voice may sound slightly masculine, her good manners show her true femininity. She is grateful to her friends and relentless toward her rivals, but respects and admires the strong regardless of their affiliation.

She fights by wielding six katanas at the same time. She also carries around a Nōdachi named "Engetsuka" which she can draw out to unleash Crimson Homura. Homura's elemental affinity is fire.

Date of Birth: 3rd of January
Age: 17
Blood Type: B
Height: 163 cm (5'4")
Measurements: B87, W57, H85 (34-22-33)
Hobby: Fighting
Favorite Food: Japanese food.
Ninja Animal: Japanese Rat Snake
Weapon: Hextuple Katana / Nodachi "Engetsuka"
VA: Eri Kitamura (Japanese), Monica Rial (English)

  • Ambiguously Brown: Subverted. In-game art and dialogue reveal that she's tanned.
  • Animal Motifs: Snakes, of course (bonus points for Asuka the Frog, above). More specifically the Japanese Rat Snake.
    • Also crabs, judging by her comedy routines.
  • Berserk Button: She really doesn't take betrayal very well.
  • Blood Knight: Homura has stated in the first game that she fights to feel alive. After she got disowned by her parents, she felt she lacked a purpose in life. Fighting allows her to truly feel alive.
Homura: When the people I loved most cast me aside, my heart stopped beating. But when I am in the middle of a fight, I realize that I can still feel alive. Yes. If I'm not fighting as a shinobi, I'm no better than a corpse.
    • She considers the fact that Hanzō and Hejibo both exist is reason enough for them to fight. When you consider what "evil/dark shinobi" actually means, this is the equivalent of Blackwater Worldwide declaring war on the United States For the Evulz.
  • Crime of Self-Defense: See Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was banished from her family due to her killing an evil ninja who attacked her when she was still a middle-school student. She did it as a self-defense, but they cast her out anyway.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Like the Berserk Button entry states, she does not take betrayal very well.
  • Expy: Of Sengoku Basara version of Date Masamune. In fact, there's a pin-up of Homura dressed almost like SB's Masamune, complete with his eyepatch, albeit Homura uses Mirai's one.
  • Foil: To Asuka.
  • Friendly Enemy: She loves to fight Asuka at any given chance, and holds nothing back as Shinobi tradition and respect demand, but after the first day it's obvious her intent isn't lethal anymore.
  • Gratuitous French: Only in the localization, Homura uses the term "joie de vivre", literally "exhilaration".
  • Hot-Blooded
  • Idiot Hair
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Rather brutally Deconstructed. Her defending herself and killing the man who was going to kill her results in her being thrown out and loses the chance to become a good Shinobi and while she defended herself, it's shown she herself does not exactly justify it.
  • Image Song: Break Out Of Your Shell in Bon Appétit.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Why yes, they are so good that she wields six of them. She carries a nōdachi, which she doesn't normally use unless she becomes Crimson Homura, in which case she primary uses it.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Quite fast and inflicts a lot of damage with her 6 katanas.
  • The Leader: It seems that the Hebi girls naturally respect her.
  • Leitmotif: To the Top!
  • Multi Wielding: She wields six Katana simultaneously.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: She does not take well if anyone but she defeats Asuka, going as far as to take revenge on them.
  • Pet the Dog: Homura reveals she wears frilly pink pajamas, so that Mirai will feel less insecure about her bear-print panties, in addition to telling her that, at Hebijo, seniority doesn't matter, they are all comrades.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Especially in her Crimson form.
  • The Rival: To Asuka. A bit (or a lot, depending on who you i.e Yumi ask) of Foe Yay/Ho Yay is there.
  • School Uniforms Are the New Black: Back at Hebijo, she didn't have a special outfit after doing a Shinobi transformation; her combat outfit was the same exact school uniform, but now with wrist guards.
    • After leaving Hebijou, her Shinobi Transformation outfit could pass as Hebijou's winter uniform.
  • The Slow Walk: During her Crimson Homura mode in Shinovi Versus.
  • Super Mode: Crimson Homura. It turns her into Shana!
  • Taking You with Me: In the anime, she vowed to do this to Dōgen. Luckily, Asuka stopped her from going through with it.
  • Tan Lines: Homura has a set defined by her Sarashi, of all things, which means the only time they're visible is when she's wearing something skimpier, such as a bikini.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail
  • Tough Room: Her impersonations really don't leave a mark on her friends.
  • Tsundere: Started as Type-A but after the events on Burst she mellowed out into a Type-B. Her rude side is now reserved for Asuka or anyone who dares to harm her.
  • Weapon of Choice: Six Katana, and she holds them like Wolverine Claws (i.e., like Ciel). During Crimson Homura mode, she wields a nōdachi.

     Yomi

Yomi

We're renegades We can't afford to live in luxury.

Friend of the sprouts. Foe of the rich.
click here  to see her in uniform.

A former second-year student at Hebijo Clandestine Girls’ Academy. She grew up in the slums, and so grew both her longing to live in an affluent house and hatred of those privileged enough to be born into wealth in the first place. She has a special hatred for Ikagura for those exact reasons.

She adopts an exaggerated fighting style by brandishing a sword longer than her entire body and also shooting a cannon. Yomi's elemental affinity is wind. It's also worth mentioning that she LOVES bean sprouts!

Date of Birth: 10th of February
Age: 17
Blood Type: B
Height: 160 cm (5'3")
Measurements: B95, W58, H90 (37-23-35)
Hobby: Sewing
Favorite Food: BEAN SPROUTS
Ninja Animal: Burrowing Ratsnake
Weapon: Broadsword, Double-shot Crossbow, Explosive Mines
VA: Ai Kayano (Japanese), Trina Nishimura (English)

  • Absolute Cleavage
  • Affably Evil: She's rather polite when you first meet her. Even in combat.
  • Animal Motifs: Her ninja animal is the burrowing rat snake.
  • Arm Cannon: Her other weapon is an arm-mounted cannon.
  • Automatic Crossbow: The other Arm Cannons she has is actually a crossbow.
  • Ax-Crazy: Her obsession of bean sprouts and actions against anyone who's wealthy, or comes off as wealthy, gets pretty scary sometimes.
Ikaruga: Wait! You said you had to kill me to complete your mission! What is the meaning of this?
Yomi: Those who sneer at bean sprouts will someday die by bean sprouts. That is the meaning of this.
  • Balloon Belly: In her Bon Appetit ending after resolving her "Lovers quarrel" with bean sprouts throughout the story.
  • Berserk Button: Are you a rich princess? Do you find any other delicacy of food other than bean sprouts to be quite delicious? Then congratulations! Yomi will now take your head off!
  • BFS: Has a gigantic broadsword, which is both thick AND long, and she can extend it even further in one of her ninpos.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She's very polite, sweet and always sports a pleasant smile. But, it masks her aggressive and sadistic side.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Due to having grown up in poverty, Yomi has bizarre tastes in foods that she's had to eat to make ends meet, such as cabbage cores, hornet larvae boiled in soy sauce, but even she turns her nose up at earthworms.
  • Blondes Are Evil
  • Chainsaw Good: Her sword has a chainsaw-like function built into it Deep Crimson onwards.
  • Childhood Friend: It's revealed in the Death Cram story that her & Murakumo were friends back in the slums.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: She seems to be able to cook just fine, even if her ingredients can be bit shady (like wild grass).
  • Cute and Psycho
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She grew up in the slums and her parents died of malnutrition while still caring for her. This caused her bitterness and hatred towards prosperous people like Ikaruga.
  • Drop the Hammer: One of her alternate weapons in Senran Kagura 2 is a giant mallet.
  • Expy: A giant sword, arm-mounted Automatic Crossbow, an Arm Cannon, bombs... she essentially has Guts' arsenal in her disposal.
  • Giggling Villain: When she does, it's either darn cute or just plain creepy.
  • Glass Cannon / Mighty Glacier: Like Ikaruga, but slower. She compensates with her projectiles and explosives.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Yomi believes people with money shouldn't be allowed to have good hearts, purely because, as a child, she never met anyone with money who cared about helping the poor like her and her family. She flies into a rage at Ikaruga, who is rather rich, but also takes time out of her day to help the poor after her last encounter with Yomi, which causes her to rethink herself.
  • Keigo: Always uphold politeness, even when she's delivering beatdown to someone while telling them how much they suck.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery
  • Meido: Her outfit looks like one.
  • Leitmotif: The Quiet Fury
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: In the Hebijo intro for Burst, she's seen lifting weights stacked upon dozens of other weights. This part of her training might be why she's able to carry around her huge sword.
  • Nice Hat
  • Onee-sama: Yomi convinces Mirai to call her "Onee-sama" (Sis in the localizations) because she's always wanted to be one.
  • OOC Is Serious Business: In her Bon Appétit story, the sheer mentioning of Yomi's separation from bean sprouts alone is enough to shock anyone she comes across. It gets to the point where the situation gets treated like some sort of serious breakup.
  • Pet the Dog: To Mirai, when Yomi reveals she wears a stomach band to sleep, to help her over her insecurity with her bear panties.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: It's a gown, and it doesn't look like a combat gear or for that matter practical. When you've been stuck in poverty and you suddenly have the power to make clothing out of thin air, you would pimp that out too.
  • Rapunzel Hair
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Hikage and Ikaruga's blue.
  • The Rival: She's determined to defeat Ikaruga, who (to her) is the face of the upper class.
  • Small Girl, Big Sword
  • Sweet Tooth: Rivals Hibari's in Bon Appetit, so much that she swims naked in a sea of sweets in Hibari's ending.
  • Sword Plant: Her victory animation in Shinovi Versus.
  • Team Mom
  • Theme Naming: Her Ninja Arts are named after terms in Norse Mythology.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Everyone in the series has one, but hers is worth mentioning: if something doesn't have bean sprouts in it, she simply doesn't like it. She always talks about bean sprouts, even in battle!
  • Tsundere: Type-B. It comes out especially often during her interactions with Ikaruga in Deep Crimson.
  • Weapon of Choice: A BFS. Between that and her Western clothing, she'd feel right at home in either a (deranged) European Fairy Tale or a JRPG.

    Hikage

Hikage

Their actions and reactions stand in direct contrast to their feelings. I seriously don't understand at all.

I DO NOT COMPREHEND
click here  to see her in uniform.

A former third-year student at Hebijo Clandestine Girls’ Academy. She’s expressionless and largely wordless, to the point that nobody can ever quite tell what she’s thinking.

She claims to have no emotions, but she’s surrounded by friends who are frank and upfront with their feelings, giving her an almost scientific curiosity about the very concept of human emotion. Her weapon of choice is the knife, which she wields with grace and aplomb. Hikage's affinity is poison.

Date of Birth: 9th of September
Age: 18
Blood Type: O
Height: 160 cm (5'3")
Measurements: B85, W57, H85 (33-22-33)
Hobby: Unknown
Favorite Food: Unknown
Ninja Animal: Cobra
Weapon: Knives
VA: Ryōko Shiraishi (Japanese), Kara Edwards (English)

  • Adaptational Villainy: The anime paints her in a worse light than in the games, where she is more prone of sporting a Slasher Smile and being bit more sadistic. In Haruka's brief explanation of the rest of her team, she claims she is a Child Soldier, where as in games, she was an emotionless orphan who grew with a street gang.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: Hikage is rather.....Odd.
  • Animal Motifs: Snakes, and she even has a Cobra as her ninja animal.
  • Bare Your Midriff
  • Brilliant but Lazy: She has everything it takes to be a shinobi, especially the drive to kill. She just don't feel like going the whole nine yards.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Shinovi Versus loved doing this with her more than Burst.
  • Dash Attack / Videogame Dashing
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She grew up on the streets, and was adopted by a female gang leader named Hinata who was killed in a fight some times afterward. Her signature knife is a Tragic Keepsake of her mentor.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: In Shinovi Versus. Katsuragi is astonished when Hikage jokes about groping Katsuragi as a reward for helping with her training.
  • Dual Wielding
  • Emotionless Girl: Hikage is a very strange example of the trope. She claims to have no emotions, and is unable to feel anything. Yet numerous points in the series show that she is very much capable of emotion, she just appears to be unaware of it. As a child, when her mentor Hinata, the closest thing she'd had to a parent, was killed, and Hikage found her body, she broke down crying. A similar situation happened in Burst, when she thought Mirai had been killed, Hikage began to cry as well. She describes the sensation as "a rainstorm in her heart", and doesn't actually realize that she's crying until Mirai points it out.
  • Expy: She looks a lot like Yuuka Kazami, even sharing some aspects of her personality. In fact, there's a lot of fan-art of both Yuuka and Hikage sharing their clothes or being together.
  • Face of a Thug: Has Hellish Pupils, dresses in a street-gang manner, is a Knife Nut... but not all that bad.
  • Flechette Storm: Her Aerial Ninpo has her summon a snake-like construct made of knives that she flings at the target.
  • Fragile Speedster: To contrast with Katsuragi, she is very fast. However her Health is average.
  • Hellish Pupils: Snake-like, and they are either disturbing to look at or cute to some.
  • Innocent Innuendo: Hikage refers to the couch the player uses to change characters as the "casting couch"...before realizing that means something totally different.
  • Kansai Regional Dialect: Courtesy of her voice actress.
  • Knife Nut: She's very good with her knife, and relish the chance to use it.
  • Leitmotif: Soul of Frenzy
  • Licking the Blade: Signature pose, using her signature knife.
  • No Social Skills: It's revealed that she isn't very good at talking to people and tries her best to overcome this problem.
  • Pungeon Master: Bon Appetit reveals that she is surprisingly good at wordplay and puns.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When she goes into frenzy mode.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Yomi and Katsuragi's red.
  • Robo Speak: Has a moment of this in Bon Appetit when Yomi admits to getting tired of bean sprouts and her only reaction is, "I DO NOT COMPREHEND."
  • Snakes Are Sexy
  • Street Urchin: After she ran away from the orphanage she grew up in, Hikage was pretty much a Street Urchin until she became a member of Hinata's gang.
    • Satisfied Street Rat: Being with Hinata made Hikage feel content in a strange way, the woman treated her differently, and Hikage "followed her around like a puppy" in her own words.
  • Stripperiffic
  • Super Mode: Berserk/Frenzy Mode, which gives her a purple Battle Aura, turns her personality from Emotionless Girl to Ax-Crazy with a Slasher Smile and Glowing Eyes of Doom and changes her attacks to be more fierce. Note that this has also been Turns Red (boss battles), Critical Status Buff (Burst), Stance System (Deep Crimson) and only really been a Super Mode in Shinovi Versus.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes
  • Sword Beam: The Splashing Ninja Art has her throwing these out.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The combat knife Hikage wields used to belong to Hinata, the leader of her gang and the closest thing Hikage had to a parent. Hikage took the knife with her after finding Hinata dead in a back alley, slashed to ribbons, feeling as if the knife held the woman's soul.
  • The Rival: Initially she holds the Nothing Personal principle, but after trading enough blows with Katsuragi, she feels that she's in some way aroused by her.
  • Weapon of Choice: Her combat knife. Better yet, knives in general.
  • What Is This Thing You Call Love?: As mentioned, Hikage is constantly surrounded by girls who are frank and open about their emotions, for better or worse. She has an almost scientific curiosity about the concept and phenomenon.
  • When She Smiles: She often has sadistic smirk, but when she's genuinely flustered, she is cute!
  • Whip Sword: Senran Kagura 2 turns her combat knife into a whip knife.
  • You Gotta Have Green Hair: A green-haired psycho? Is she Yuuka Kazami?

     Mirai

Mirai

See, I may be a renegade, but I have a secret identity as well.

click here  to see her in uniform.

A former first-year student at Hebijo Clandestine Girls’ Academy. While her graciousness in defeat may suggest a certain level of maturity, in truth she can be immature and disobedient. Her lack of maturity is best displayed in her hatred of being ignored.

While it can sometimes be hard for her being surrounded by more mature shinobi, overall she is very happy to be a member of the Hebijo Academy. Her umbrella is a concealed firearm, and she hides other heavy weapons under her skirt.

Date of Birth: 28th of December
Age: 16
Blood Type: A
Height: 150 cm (4'11")
Measurements: B62, W48, H59 (24-19-23)
Hobby: Internet
Favorite Food: Nabemono.
Ninja Animal: Pit Viper
Weapon: Gunbrella and other various firearms.
VA: Saori Goto (Japanese), Lara Woodhull (English)

  • A-Cup Angst: Downplayed, but it's there. The fans often joke that it's the #1 reason that she's constantly bullied.
  • Adorkable: One can't help but admit how adorable she gets when she goes full otaku on people sometimes. Add the fact that she's a diehard Sengoku Super Wars fangirl and she definitely comes off as this.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: She went through constant bullying in the past which made a serious dent in her self-esteem.
  • Antagonistic Counterpart: A mirror-match in a number of ways to Yagyū: same schoolyear in different schools, eyepatches of different designs and materialsnote  in opposite positions, different types of umbrellas, hair color, etc.
  • Attention Whore: Not to an extreme, but doesn't like being ignored.
  • BFG: Valkyrie sure counts. It's bigger than she is!
  • Butt Monkey: She's about as weak as Hibari when it comes to being a ninja, but she acts big and considers Yagyū her rival. Yagyū is a Child Prodigy. Yagyū also tends to ignore Mirai when she appears, being more focused on something else, much of her annoyance.
    • Lethal Joke Character: In-game only, a pure ranged fighter with the ability to counter attacks just when you think it is safe to attack her at melee range? She is this in spades.
  • Cute Little Fangs: To match cat ears and tail on her costume.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She used to be bullied in her old school, causing her to have a sort of inferiority complex.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Her eyepatch looks like the Solid Eye with a Mitsudomoe symbol.
    • She pulls out a massive gun from under her skirt! That's asking Freud for a field day.
      • Pulling the gun on frantic mode reveals than is set on a base which goes under her crotch though.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: She even has the mentality to match.
  • Expy: She's basically a ninja version of Kuro Kagami from Kodomo no Jikan, complete with her cat motives.
  • Eyepatch of Power: The opposite eye from Yagyū's. She wears it to block her vision from the world due of the constant bullying she suffered.
  • Gatling Good: One of her default weapons in Senran Kagura 2 is a portable gatling gun.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Mirai wears very cute, bear-print panties. Haruka finds this hilarious.
  • Grenade Launcher: One of her weapon stances in Senran Kagura 2 is a grenade launcher.
  • Hammerspace: Where DOES she store her anti-tank rifle Valkyrie, anyway?
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She takes the bullet for Homura when Yagyū tries to shoot her in the first game.
  • Hime Cut: Long black hair. Due to being petite, it reaches beyond her hips.
  • Kemonomimi: Her hat has cat ears and also has a cat tail on her costume.
  • Leitmotif: I Know I Can Do It!
  • More Dakka: Her umbrella has machine-gun in it.
    • Her Ninja Arts bring more and more dakka as they come. Her first Ninja art is always an anti-tank rifle, followed up with a belt made out of gatling guns. Her final Ninja Art changes, was it firing her anti-tank rifle in combination of using her umbrella as a flamethrower (Burst), using a Kill Sat (Deep Crimson) or summoning giant cannon on wheels with multiple rifles and gatling guns on its side (Shinovi Versus).
  • Older Than She Looks: This Elegant Gothic Lolita looks 12 years old, but actually is the same age as Yagyū.
  • Parasol of Pain: With a machine-gun attachment no less.
  • Pen Name: For her online novelist identity, she uses "Futsure", which is her name in English pronounced like it was written in Japanese.
  • Petite Pride: Where she does sometimes show the desire to gain larger breasts, she is at least fine with her being flat, saying that people do like them small.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: She's the shortest of the Crimson Girls and manages to pack some serious power.
  • Real Time Weapon Change: She has the ability to switch between her umbrella, a gatling gun, and a grenade launcher in Senran Kagura 2.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Haruka and Yagyū's blue
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning
  • Revenge: She joined the Hebijo Academy as oppose to any good shinobi school so that she can freely take revenge on the people who bullied her in the past. She eventually gives up on it, as she is convinced that she is way better than some bully.
  • School Swimsuit: Her default swimsuit.
  • Small Girl, Big Gun: Whatever gun comes from her skirt, its probably at very least her size.
  • Stealth Pun: Instead of the actual Vaio laptop, Mirai uses a Paio laptop to write her stories on.
  • Stock Shoujo Bullying Tactics: She was mostly the victim of being ignored by others.
  • Theme Naming: Her Ninja Arts are named after stuff from German war history, most notably from World War II.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Of the first generation of girls, at least. Though she can be this to other character.
  • Weapon of Choice: Her umbrella, which has an in-built machine gun. Also, her Victoria's Secret Compartment hides a BFG.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Holds a BFG and a frickin' miniature jet plane.

     Haruka

Haruka

To be honest, I couldn't get my mind off you either. Your cries were so...fulfilling.

The samba dancing puppet mistress. Can't keep a job though.
click here  to see her in uniform.

A former third-year student at Hebijo Acadeny . She’s a sadistic character who acts like the queen of the castle, and her favourite thing in the world is to tease the weak. Yet despite this, she cradles her juniors’ feelings and acts almost like a mother figure to them. This maternal instinct is probably the reason why she is fond of Hibari from Hanzo Academy.

She uses chemical weapons and puppetry, concealing the inner workings of her strategies under her white coat.

Date of Birth: 20th of July
Age: 18
Blood Type: AB
Height: 169 cm (5'7")
Measurements: B99, W55, H88 (39-22-35)
Hobby: Making dolls
Favorite Food: Kombu strips.
Ninja Animal: Japanese Keelback
Weapon: Chemicals, Robotic puppet
VA: Megumi Toyoguchi (Japanese), Teri Rogers (English)

  • Animal Motifs: The Japanese keelback.
  • Affably Evil: Unlike Yomi, her polite nature comes off as intimidating.
  • The Baroness: The Sexpot type.
  • Body Surf: When she's about to fight Hibari she'll usually Body Surf into a lifelike doll of herself (at least, that's how Burst's English translation handles it).
  • Boobs of Steel: She is a top-tier ninja possessing rare skill, and her boobs are significantly greater than the rest of the castnote  (which is saying something).
  • Cat Smile: She's make a rather goofy one in Bon Appétit.
  • Chainsaw Good: Her robot puppet possesses one.
  • Coat Cape: She wears her labcoat this way.
  • Combat Sado Masochist: Implied. Just read the names of her leitmotifs below...
  • Cool Big Sis: She acts more in the lines of big sister mentor to the other girls. Hibari even reminds her of such after she starts having doubts.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Is mentally twisted due to her having been nothing more than her mother's doll.
  • Difficult but Awesome: Like Hibari she's sort of strange to get the hang of at first, but eventually becomes very strong.
  • Dominatrix: And how.
  • Genius Bruiser: Highly intelligent? Check. Capable of beating foes within an inch of their life? Check. Very sexy? Double check.
  • Gradual Grinder: She's the only shinobi who's capable of inflicting multiple status effects on her opponents.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: She genuinely wants to be friends with Hibari. Although in her case, it's not clear whether she means it in the traditional sense, looking for a lesbian pet rabbit or even both.
    • If Shinovi Versus is anything to go by, it's the former. The two are mutually happy to see each other, Haruka asks Hibari for advice, Hibari shows off how strong she's become, and all of Haruka's sexual lust for her is pretty much gone. In the main story anyway. The character stories show that Haruka does still find Hibari adorable, but considering the way the character stories go it's not nearly as unsettling as it was in Burst.
  • Kiss of Death: Her ninja art, DEATH X KISS.
  • Leitmotif: My Dolls
  • Mad Scientist
  • Marionette Master: Her control over dolls is such that she can coordinate them to give enough challenge to the Hanzo girls. And then she attempts to control Hibari. And it works!
  • Mighty Glacier: Has the highest HP of the Hebijo girls, and though her normal attacks are very short ranged, they do a lot of damage. Her Ninpos are also very strong, aside from the basic Ground one.
  • Ojou: You certainly wouldn't have guessed from looking at her. On the other hand, she doesn't like being an Ojou, she craves independence.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Seems to be an expert in both chemicals and robotics. Perhaps genetic engineering too, taking the... things in the test tubes in the opening of Burst into account.
    • Guren no Hebi confirms that Haruka is indeed a genius in genetic engineering as well, having created a carnivorous plant/snake chimera part as a new weapon for Hebijo and part for her own amusement.
  • Pet the Dog: In her own... strange way, after laughing at Mirai's bear-print panties, Haruka gives her a negligee to help her over her insecurities.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Mirai's and Hibari's red.
  • Robot Buddy: Ever since Versus, Haruka has a small battle robot hidden in her lab coat. It has piston punches, claws, chainsaws, flamethrowers and a notable AI, considering it's capable of fawning over Haruka. (As though she'd build a robot that wouldn't).
  • Sexy Sadist: She's a total sadist and enjoys making sexy-fun of Hibari. One can suspect that there is a rape scene missing in episode 9.
  • The Southpaw: Surprisingly, she's lefthanded.
  • Stripperiffic: Again, her outfit (along with Shiki) is the most scanty one out of all 79 girls. No, Katsuragi doesn't count; that girl wasn't trying to wear much to begin with.
  • Team Mom: Sadism aside (somehow), she's (somehow) the one who works hard to keep her friends' spirits up (somehow).
  • The Tease: Likes to use innuendos and double entendres sometimes just to get a reaction out of people.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Haruka very blatantly enjoys being beaten to the point of having her clothing shredded. It helps that it's usually not her real body.
  • Weapon of Choice: Chemicals, carried around in glass tubes, and a robot buddy.
  • Why Do You Keep Changing Jobs?: While the other Crimson Girls manage to keep relatively steady (Part time) jobs, Haruka can't keep one for more than a day.
  • You Are What You Hate: Haruka's Freudian Excuse is that her mother reduced her to a dress-up doll in response to her father practically abandoning their family. Now, think back on all that effort Haruka put in to making Hibari a doll of her own.

Hebijo Clandestine Girls' Academy

The Vile

Hebijo Clandestine Girls' Academy was renowned throughout the criminal underworld for its ruthless spies and vicious assassins - until the school burned down in a terrible battle six months ago. Now, from the old school's smoke and ashes, a new leader emerges. Her followers hail from all corners of the shinobi world, each one proud in her own way to call herself "evil." Their first mission: Hunt down the school's former Elites, punish their failure and betrayal, and restore the name of Hebijo to its former glory.

Related to all Hebijo Clandestine shinobi

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: By Dōgen. The Crimson Squad frees them though.
  • Catch Phrase: "I dance for the honor of evil!"
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Often on the receiving end of this from the Crimson Squad, especially from Homura, who calls them out on being a bunch of violent lunatics who only claim superiority because of their school.
  • Hero Killer: They kill off the other factions as an act of vengeance.
  • Not So Different: They claim the way of Evil Shinobi is entirely different and superior to Good Shinobi, and the world would be better off without Good Shinobis' weakness. They're totally unaware this is a perfect mirror of Gessen's philosophy.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Good god. They're pretty much hell-bent on reforming Hebijo that they disposed of the other three factions to do so.
  • Short-Range Girl, Long-Range Girl: Ryōbi and Ryōna respectively. Ryōbi's playstyle focuses more on long-range combat, while Ryōna specializes in fighting at close quarters.
  • Stupid Evil: Invoked thanks to the brainwashing. Their utter dismissiveness of the merits of flexible thinking and The Power of Friendship look more and more destructively narrow-minded as the plot goes on.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Despite a network of familial relationships and childhood friendships, the group don't have any particular sense of unity and some aren't even that loyal to Hebijo itself, leading to more internal bickering than the other teams. Depending on the story being played, this can lead to the group completely imploding.
  • Trickster Twins: Ryōbi and Ryōna
  • Villain Antagonist

You think this is all a game, with rules and fairness and happy endings. You have no idea what a shinobi truly is.

A 3rd year student and the leader of the new group at Hebijo, and a member of the earlier generation before Homura's. She lost her abilities and memory after an accident during a mission. She stands for the Private Ladies Academy of the Serpent and plans to restore Hebijo's honor.

Hobbies: Bathing
Favorite Food: Oyako Donburi

  • The Ace: She was at the top of her class & managed to become the leader of the new elite squad.
    • Broken Ace: She was hospitalized for a year because the Blood Riot powers went haywire.
  • The Baroness: Has sort of the intimidation of the Rosa Klebb type.
  • Berserk Button: She will not tolerate anyone bad mouthing Hebijo's image. She'll cut them down in a matter of seconds.
  • The Berserker: The Blood Riot Art made her become one during a mission involving Yōma.
  • Bifauxnen: She has Boyish Short Hair and is stated to be fairly masculine to the point that she's mistaken for a boy. This gets her so much attention that she concludes that the best way to get away from her man-starved schoolmates is to undergo a Girliness Upgrade.
"All right. It's time to say farewell to my boyish good looks!"
  • Casting a Shadow: Her element, most noticeable with her left arm being covered in dark energy.
  • Childhood Friends: With Imu.
  • Cool Sword: She uses a sword what is essentially the Seven-Branched Sword.
  • Daddy's Girl: She is the only one not under Dōgen's brainwashing as her father is the principal of Hebijo Academy and she does not want him to get fired.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her mother was brutally killed by a yōma in front of her when she was a child, motivating her desire to become a kagura.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: She invoked Blood Riot while her & Imu were on a mission. However, she lost control of her body and soul. This lead to Imu using Blood Reverse.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Miyabi won't hold back on insults. Although, this probably comes from her cold nature.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: To the point where she tries to find a way to be more feminine to get them off her back.
  • Hellish Pupils: Strangely similar to Hikage's design.
  • Ice Queen
  • Image Song: Machiavellism of Despair in Bon Appétit.
  • Instant Fan Club: The "I Heart Miyabi Militia" is the circle of fangirls that Miyabi has to constantly deal with.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude
  • The Leader: Of the new Hebijo squad.
  • Leitmotif: Swear to Dougen
  • Lightning Bruiser: Miyabi is frighteningly tough. Her high endurance allows her to chase down her opponents, as well as having high offense and attack speed for pulling off long combos. She can also perform very fast launchers capable of sending opponents in the air very quick. Her defense is also very impressive for when she takes a hit. She can actually give Homura a run for her money.
  • Modesty Shorts
  • Power Gives You Wings: Her Ultimate Secret Ninja Art and Super Mode gives her six black angel wings during them.
  • Super Mode: She gains one in Estival Versus.
  • Theme Naming: Her Ninja Arts are named after the three canticles of Divine Comedy, of all things (Delightful Inferno, Purgatorio of Good and Evil, Paradiso of The Abyss).
  • Villainous BSOD: Played for laughs in Bon Appétit. Murakumo proceeds to call her by her secret ninja arts and takes her naming sense to her dismay. It aggravates her so much that she, somehow, manages to collapse into a VillainousRROD of all things!
  • White Hair, Black Heart

    Murasaki

Murasaki

The Spiritless Shut-In With A Surprisingly Strident Shriek

Someone. Someone please help.

A Second year student and Imu's younger sister. She is very anti social and spends most of her time in her room playing with her stuffed bear plushy, Bebeby. She is known as the first truant in Hebijo's history because of her introverted nature. Due to an incident in the past, her relationship with her sister had been strained. Despite her timid nature, she possesses a dark power called Root of Calamity that gives her a frightening amount of energy. She also has the ability sense someone's intentions by smelling them. She also happens to have the largest breast out of all the girls in the series.

Murasaki focuses on close-ranged attacks by manipulating the giant shurikens attached to her hair. With her Root of Calamity power, she can also perform darkness based ninja arts. Murasaki's affinity is darkness.

Date of Birth: 26th of October
Age: 17
Blood Type: A
Height: 161 cm (5'4")
Measurements: B105, W59, H88 (41-23-35)
Hobby: Playing with Bebeby
Favorite Food: Onigiri
Ninja Animal: Bear
Weapon: Giant shurikens attached to her hair.
VA: Sayuri Yahagi, (Japanese)

  • Abusive Parents: Her father pulls her hair when she refuses to start her training.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Her ninja animal is the Bear.
  • Berserk Button: Don't insinuate that Bebeby is just a toy. Minori learns this the hard way.
    • When Imu and Murasaki were younger, Imu snatched Bebeby away from Murasaki so she would stop being so dependent her. The end result was her waking up to see Imu out cold by her feet followed by her father informing her of the Root of Calamity power she possesses. Stating that by detonating her mental strength, the ninja art increases the power of the body ten times.
    • Another instance was when a Hebijo examiner came to her room. When he was about to grab Bebeby, her cursed spirit power activated again. When Murasaki came to, her feet were covered by the examiner's blood. It was then revealed to be an entrance exam for Hebijo, which, much to her shock, she passes.
    • Another thing to also take note is that Murasaki thinks of Bebeby as a very close surrogate sister. Should anyone, and we mean ANYONE, try to take, steal, or rip Bebeby apart; she will not have any mercy.
    • Long story short, DON'T DO ANYTHING HARMFUL TO BEBEBY.
      • Murasaki seriously does not like hackers. If you just so happen to be one, run.
  • Brilliant but Lazy: She's very capable of being an excellent ninja. However, she would rather play with Bebeby all day and browse the web than actually train.
  • Casting a Shadow: Her Root of Calamity power allows her to execute darkness based ninja arts.
  • Companion Cube/ Security Blanket: Bebeby
  • Creepy Child
  • Cursed with Awesome: The Root of Calamity power she possesses. Sure it gives her a lot of power, but her sister resented her for it.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She originally didn't want to become a shinobi, but was forced to by her father under the suspicion that she was using her cursed spirit power for her own gain. Soon after, Imu tries to take Bebeby away from Murasaki because she thought it was weighing her down. Because of her cursed power, this resulted in her hurting Imu, killing a Hebijo scout, receiving more attention than Imu, and threatened her own family for trying to exploit her power. She's felt that Imu was resentful of her ever since and would rather be around Miyabi.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita
  • Expy: Bebeby bares a lot of resemblance to the Kumamoto Prefecture mascot, Kumamon.
  • Glass Cannon: Probably the glassiest of cannons. She hits hard, but her defense is rather terrible.
  • Hikikomori: Spends most of her time secluded in her room. Her online username is even "cute_shutin"
  • Leitmotif: For Your Scar
  • The Nose Knows: She has a special skill that allows her to tell what kind of person someone is by their smell.
  • Prehensile Hair: Uses spinning blades attached to her hair for her attacks.
  • Purple Eyes
  • Rapunzel Hair
  • Shrinking Violet: Very soft-spoken and shy.
  • Sphere of Destruction: How her Root of Calamity works.
  • Taking the Bullet: She does this for Imu when Ryōbi tries to shoot her. Fortunately, the shot didn't able to hit anything vital, and was able to survive it.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: As described above in brilliant but lazy.
  • Vocal Dissonance: She's usually soft spoken....right until she gets angry.
  • When She Smiles: Usually seen with a depressed expression on her face. On rare occasions where she does smile, it's adorable.
  • You Gotta Have Purple Hair

Come on. Spank me. Hit me! Call me dirty names, and then ignore me when I cry!

A first year at Hebijo. Ryōbi's twin sister and the older of the two. Contrast to her sister, she likes being chastised and scolded, loves showing off her breasts and is a gigantic masochist. She has a freestyle shooting technique mixed with elegant dancing.

Ryōna's affinity is ice.

Date of Birth: 19th of January
Age: 16
Blood Type: O
Height: 160 cm (5'3")
Measurements: B98, W56, H88 (39-22-35)
Hobby: Shopping
Favorite Food: Chikuwa
Ninja Animal: Pig
Weapon: Quad-handguns
VA: MAKO, (Japanese)

  • Animal Motif: The pig
  • Ax-Crazy: She has absolutely no problem with bruising you if you don't bruise her. Not only that, she also has a tendency to unnerve people because of her hardcore masochism. This even makes her sadist sister, Ryōbi, want to avoid her sometimes!
Ryōna: Of course, if you won't hit me OR rub me...then I guess you can die. Yep. I'll need you to die.
  • Berserk Button: Ryōna will finish you if you know anything about Ryōki.
    • When her & Ryōbi were witnessing Sayuri send off one of the spirits and saw that she was about to do the same to Ryōki, she mowed down the shinobi Kekkai barrior just to get to her.
  • Big Breast Pride: Loves to show off her breasts, which are an impressive 98 cm, making her one of the more bustier girls.
  • Blondes Are Evil
  • Casual Kink: Asking people, especially random pedestrians, to bully her? Yes. Enjoys said infliction of pain? Yes.
  • Cat Smile: Her default expression.
  • Close Range Combatant
  • Combat Sado Masochist: More emphasis on the masochist part.
  • Cute and Psycho: Just look at how adorable she looks with her smile and little tiara....and pistols that are ready to gun you down.
  • Dance Battler: Her fighting style incorporates elements of figure skating.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Shared with Ryoubi. They transferred to Hebijo to exact revenge on Miyabi, who they think was responsible for the death of their big sister, a Gessen teacher, during her mission to kill Miyabi in order stop her from using her power which was feeding yōmas. It was the mission which left Miyabi comatose for years, and during which Rin/Suzune was presumably killed (she was recruited by Miyabi's father).
  • Dissonant Serenity: She somehow finds a way to put on a smile in the most unsettling moments.
  • Don't Try This at Home: Advises the player not to engage in the same act of becoming a tempura like her. Yes. You read that right.
Ryōna: But don't you ever, EVER, try this at home. Even for a trained professional like me, becoming a piece of tempura is highly risky.
  • Everything's Better with Spinning: Due to her freestyle shooting nature. Word of God has stated that her fighting style, as well as design, are inspirations from Swan Lake.
  • Gangsta Style: She tends to do this often.
  • Genki Girl: A rather unsettling version of this trope.
  • Guns Akimbo
  • Gun Fu: Her fighting style also revolves around this.
  • Gun Twirling: She does this in opening and fighting animations.
  • Hidden Depths: Aside from the below, she's apparently a big fan of Swan Lake. Also, she seems to genuinely regret leaving Gessen Academy and considered the elites as friends.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Because of her fetish, a lot of people tend to avoid her, causing her to grow lonely and wanting to have some one who understands her. That is why she feels so attracted to Haruka, as she is more than happy to satisfy her needs.
  • Idiot Hair
  • Jack of All Stats: To a lesser extent than Asuka. Her stats are pretty balanced in all fields.
  • Lady of War: Fights with finesse and grace.
  • Leitmotif: Super Duper Masochism
  • The Masochism Tango: She practically feeds off of this with Ryōbi and Haruka.
  • Meaningful Name: It's possible she was named after the infamous practice of the same name in videogames of exacting violence on female characters on very brutal ways. This is made more likely by her being a notorious masochist.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Wanting to see how it feels to be cooked alive, unremorsefully crushes two random mooks as a giant in the OVA, and her masochistic antics in general make her a likely candidate as one.
  • Orgasmic Combat: Ryōna can be a little too vocal about her lust for pain in fighting.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Her dress is inspired by Swan Lake.
  • Serious Business: She will go from a kinky attitude to a serious tone if anyone knows anything about her and Ryōbi's deceased sister, Ryōki. She disposes of Yozakura when she was on the verge of finding out why they transferred to Hebijo.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She happily jiggles her assets in her win animation.
  • Shared Unusual Trait: Her and Ryōbi both have Heterochromia.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: She and Ryōbi are biological siblings, but look and act nothing like each other. The only outward hint of their relation is their heterochromatic eyes.
  • Stealth Pun: Her ninja animal is the Pig, which is frequently symbolic of gluttony. She's also a hardcore masochist. She's a glutton for punishment.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Well she is a masochist after all. During Katsuragi's substory Katsuragi humors Ryōna and agrees to "bully" her by groping her breasts, but soon regrets it when Ryōna ends up enjoying it instead of resisting like she expected.
  • Trigger Happy
  • Villains Out Shopping: It may be a hobby of hers, but being Ryōna she's more likely to buy certain items.

     Suzune/Rin

Suzune/Rin

Her dictionary doesn't contain the word mercy.
.

Also known as Rin, Suzune is a teacher at Hebijo Academy. She is strict with the other students but they respect her because of this. Once upon a time she was once a student at Hanzo Academy, and her fierce rivalry with Daidōji stems from these times.

Suzune brandishes a Fūma Shuriken in battle, and she wields the four-bladed weapon with extreme skill and dexterity. You don't wan't to misbehave around her! Her elemental affinity is wind.

Date of Birth: 30th of September
Age: 27
Blood Type: A
Height: 160 cm (5'3")
Measurements: B97, W57, H90 (38-22-35)
Hobbies: Teaching
Favorite Food: Beans
Ninja Animal: Hawk
Weapon: Fuuma Shuriken
VA Suzuko Mimori (Japanese), Lydia Mackay (English)

  • Badass: A rival of Daidōji makes her automatically this.
  • Batman Gambit: Her actions in the anime are this, using the Hebijou girls deliberately to inspire the Hanzo girls to turn up their training. She wanted the Hanzo girls to be at their best so the Hebijou girls could defeat them and prove the superiority of the Evil Ninja philosophy... but was less-than-prepared for the Hanzo and Hebijou girls working together.
  • Career-Ending Injury: The ill-fated mission left her with a lingering trauma what prevents her from fighting in the front lines.
  • Determinator: The reason why Daidōji couldn't beat her in the past? Because Rin refused to stay down, no matter how many times she was struck down.
  • Face-Heel Turn: She used to attend Hanzo Academy, where she was known as Rin. Like Asuka, she wanted to be a "super ninja" spreading love and peace around the world, and her master, Kiriya, wanted her to succeed. However, on her graduation day, she nearly died from a puppet shooting her, only to be saved from disgrace by Kiriya's intervention. This indulgence on his part backfired after she was declared a shinobi, when she was killed on a dangerous mission... or so the reports said. What really happened was that Hebijo saved her, and she switched her alliance to their cause to follow her own Path of the Shinobi.
  • Flash Step: She does this instead of dashing.
  • Genius Bruiser
  • Heel-Face Turn: Around the end of Crimson Squad story of Shinovi Versus, she decides to abandon Hebijo Academy so that she can pursue the path of kagura.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the last episode of the anime, she grabs Dōgen in a chokehold and leaps off of the collapsing Hebijo Academy building, to prevent him from activating the Yoke technique to kill her students after failing their mission.
  • Hot Teacher
  • I Owe You My Life:
    • In the anime, it was Dōgen who saved her life, which led her to believe that the Evil Shinobi had some noble qualities to them after all. She was not particularly keen to learn he intended on using her in his own little power plays.
    • In the games, it was Miyabi's father who saved her life, and after she had spend an year recovering, he offered her a job as a teacher. Because she couldn't really return back due of being MIA and because he saved her life, she accepted the offer.
  • Identical Stranger: In her youth, she apparently resembled Homura very strongly.
  • Image Song: Prepare Yourself, Teacher! in Bon Appétit.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Once playable, she is very fast, can take a bit of punishment (even in Frantic Mode), and has very damaging attacks and arts.
  • Leitmotif: Beautiful Former Teacher Blocks Our Path
  • Meganekko
  • Precocious Crush: She used to have one on Kiriya-sensei... and may or may not have it still.
  • A Pupil Of Mine Until She Turned To Evil: See Face-Heel Turn above for details.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Daidōji's red.
  • The Rival: Rin and Daidōji were rival schoolgirls.
  • Sempai/Kohai: She was once Daidouij's Sempai.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Asuka. She was every bit as idealistic as Asuka once had been, but after her almost fatal failure, she joined up with Dōgen/Miyabi's father and began to follow the path of the Evil Shinobi. Since Shinovi Versus, she finally seems to have abandoned this idea and is now setting out on her own path.
  • Walking Spoiler
  • Weapon of Choice: She uses a pair of collapsible Fuuma Shurikens. By fanning the blades out partially and wearing their rings around her shoulders, she looks like she has wings, which is a look that goes well with her hawk partner.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: You Gotta Have Purple Hair.

     Dōgen

Dōgen

One of the investors behind Hebijo Academy, Dōgen is secretly hell-bent on raining terror across all of Japan. He has the grounding of a shinobi warrior and has mastered the art of manipulation.

Driven by his lust for power, he aims to resurrect ancient demons to do his bidding.

Hobby: Unknown

VA: Jurota Kosugi (Japanese), Phil Parsons (English)

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the games and manga, he's blonde. In the anime, his hair is black.
  • Big Bad: For Crimson Girls and possibly Skirting Shadows. In the Hebijo storyline he is explicitly the one responsible for summoning Orochi and assimilating the Hebijo girls to do so, and can be chalked up to being responsible behind Orochi's appearance in the Hanzo storyline as well.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He appears very briefly in the Hanzo storyline, without even being named, but every aspect of this scene heavily implies that he's a lot more important than his minor role here is letting on.
  • Cutscene Boss: In the Hebijo storyline he is effortlessly cut in half by Homura during the visual novel section.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: As if it wasn't obvious already.
  • Heroic Build: His appearance in the games is never shown, but according to game text he's apparently a tall man with a sculpted physique. He does, however, get an appearance in the anime and Senran Kagura 2 (As shown above).
  • Hulking Out: Before his boss battle in SK 2, he does this by eating a Yoma fetus when confronted by Rin and Homura.
  • Implacable Man: No matter how many times Homura allegedly kills him, he manages come back every single time.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: Is quickly killed by Homura in the Hebijo storyline as he was raving on about how he was going to use Orochi for his own intentions
  • Mysterious Backer: His motives are a mystery even to the Hebijo school officials.

Gessen Girls School

The Immaculate

The shinobi students of the Gessen Girls’ Academy pride themselves on strict discipline and purity of spirit. Their five Elites are all adopted children of the infamous shinobi Kurokage, who fought to purge all evil from the world. Devoted to his dream, these five noble souls wield their light to burn away darkness – by any means necessary.

Related to all Gessen School shinobi:

  • Catch Phrase: "Sink into the dreams of sleeping souls!"
  • Dark and Troubled Past: All of them were adopted by Kurokage after their shinobi parents were killed by evil shinobi; hence their unforgiving attitude toward the bad faction, and their initial Knight Templar hostility toward Hanzo for their friendship with Homura's group.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Though he tried to raise them well, the girls never seemed to understand that he was trying to explain that his past worldview was wrong, and decided to take it upon themselves to fulfill his abandoned dream.
  • Happily Adopted: Everyone who isn't Yumi, his biological granddaughter. Kurokage really cares about his adopted daughters, and they love him back.
  • Hero Antagonist
  • Knight Templar: Due to their Dark And Troubled Pasts, they believe all evil shinobi must be destroyed and that any good shinobi who get along with them lose their right to be called "good". This leads to them wanting to have a world with no evil shinobi, their adopted parent's, Kurokage, dream. At least until they actually see in their storyline that not all evil shinobi are downright evil causing them to rethink themselves.

  • Defrosting Ice Queen‎: While pursuing the signification of Justice during arcade mode, she reaches the conclusion than Justice is Cuteness and decides to dress-up as a Magical Girl‎ (Puri!). Her transformation triggers an Heroic BSOD from her fellow Gessen comrades.
    • She also loses her Knight Templar attitude after seeing how Imu was ready to risk her life to save an injured Miyabi after Yumi defeated her and then trading blows with Homura who said that she views Asuka as a rival and how they push each other. This all leads to her accepting Asuka and the two of them becoming friends to point where Yumi teases Asuka on her relationship with Homura.
  • Expy: Of Shiki Ryougi.
  • Honor Before Reason: As the grand-daughter of Kurokage.
  • I Can Still Fight‎: It takes an intervention from Kurokage to prevent Yumi and Asuka from killing each other.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Indeed!
  • Ice Queen: Literally, as she is based on the Ice queen from classic japanese folk tales.
  • Image Song: Pretty Prisoner in Bon Appétit.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: Her kimono.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Lampshaded by Shiki that she can be a little harsh sometimes, but deeply cares for her team.
  • Kimono Fanservice
  • Lady of War: Fights with the utmost of grace.
  • The Leader
  • Leitmotif: For Master Kurokage

  • The Rival: Yumi believes Asuka is no longer fit to become a good ninja for allowing Homura to live.
  • Silly Reason for War: By the end of the game, she knows the reasons behind her personal vendetta against Asuka are shallows, but as a shinobi she has to fight to the end.
  • Stone Wall: She has the lowest offense of the other team leaders, but she manages to compensate for it with her high defense.
  • Super Mode: She gains one in Estival Versus, replacing the summon of her giant spider as her ultimate Ninpo.
  • Winter Royal Lady

    Murakumo

Murakumo

The Mysterious and Meek Masked Maiden
click here  to see her in uniform.

Don't worry. You...You don't have to be nice. I kn-kn-know how I look, all right? I get it!

A third year at Gessen Girls Academy & daughter of the Tairo Corporation CEO. Due to her shy personality, she wears a mask to hide her face. With the mask on, however, she becomes very bloodthirsty. In the event where she isn't wearing her mask, because of her introverted personality and shy nature, she gets very nervous and speaks extremely fast. She will use anything to hide her face (even garbage bags).

Her weapons are a large cleaver and spear. Swinging the cleaver downwards very quickly results in an extremely heavy blow. She also has the ability to summon her pet wolf, Daigoro, along with other wolves, in her ninja arts.

Date of Birth: 8th of October
Age: 18
Blood Type: B
Height: 172 cm (5'7")
Measurements: B96, W58, H85 (38-23-33)
Hobby: Drawing manga.
Favorite Food: Rice cake.
Ninja Animal: Wolf
Weapon: Spear and giant cleaver
VA: Hisako Kanemoto, (Japanese)

  • Adorkable: Not only does she love drawing manga, but she also happens to be a huge Sengoku Super Wars fangirl.
  • Attack Animal: She uses a pair of wolf summons in combat. Whether they count as Noble Wolves or Savage Wolves probably depends on where you stand with relation to Murakumo herself.
  • Beneath the Mask: Pun very much intended. The rude, abusive girl who wears the mask is actually a ridiculously shy moeblob underneath.
  • Berserk Button: If you manage unmask her but she then re-masks herself, she will take revenge on you for doing that.
  • BFS: Her gigantic blood-stained cleaver.
  • Dash Attack / Videogame Dashing
  • Don't Look at Me!: She'll usually tell people to do this if her mask is off.
  • Family Honor: The reason why she was adopted second time was because the head of Tairo Corporation did not have worthy heirs (Murakumo is just a distant relative) and adopted her because he saw Houo Organization do the same with Ikaruga. She didn't take it that well and hated Ikaruga for this.
  • Fatal Flaw: Taking off her mask in general. She would've killed Asuka if it hadn't been for Ikaruga swiping her mask off. Without it, she pretty much covered her face and left herself defenseless for Katsuragi to scare her off.
  • For SCIENCE: She tries to get Shiki's support to practice and get some inspiration for the romance bits of her newest manga. Shiki flees for her life.
  • Glass Cannon / Fragile Speedster
  • Huge Schoolgirl: At 172 cm (5'07") tall she is the tallest female playable character so far (not counting New Wave). Slightly taller than even Daidouji, though she happens to look larger as a dramatic effect.
  • Iconic Item: Her Hannya masknote , which serves as something of an emotional crutch (see Split Personality below). In the New Wave card game, she has an alternate tiger mask that she sometimes carries.
  • Knife Nut: Carries a large butcher's cleaver into battle, which she treats as though it were An Axe to Grind.
  • Leitmotif: Masked Princess
  • Motor Mouth: A symptom of anxiety that arises when she doesn't have her mask.
  • Shrinking Violet: So absolutely, desperately shy that, if she can't have her mask, she'll hide her head with a trash bag.
  • Short-Range Long-Range Weapon: By Ryobi, in the New Hebijo storyline.
  • Shout-Out: Two of her mangas she has written are named "Mask of the South" and "Do 2D Girls Dream of Electric Toasters?".
  • Split Personality: Rude and bloodthirsty when she has her mask on; puts Hibari to shame on the moeblob race without it.
  • The Un-Smile: Pulls one off after the end of her story mode.
  • Vocal Dissonance: With her mask off, she speaks in high-pitched and rapid tone. With her mask on, she speaks with an affected Contralto of Danger.

    Yozakura

Yozakura

The Mighty Matriarch With Massive Mitts

Kicking is for men and girls with no shame. A real lady knows how to use her fists, and look good doing it.

A second year at Gessen Girls Academy. She has a very serious demeanor and isn't very good at understanding jokes. She doesn't approve of twisted things, nor things that get out of hand. When she comes across either of these two things her home dialect/accent unintentionally comes out. On both hands she wields special gauntlets that change size and cover her hands and wrist. Heavy blows are her specialty.

She's the oldest of 12 brothers and sisters. With her mother killed during a mission as a shinobi, she had to raise her young siblings by herself. After her father's death a year later, however, Yozakura was separated from her relatives. After escaping, she met with the master Kurokage and he told her, "I'll give you the strength to protect what is important to you." She accepted with the condition that she gets to reunite with her brothers and sisters again.

Date of Birth: 5th of April
Age: 16
Blood Type: O
Height: 159 cm (5'3")
Measurements: B90, W53, H82 (35-21-32)
Hobby: Cleaning
Favorite Food: Rice crackers.
Ninja Animal: Wild Boar
Weapon: Giant Gauntlets
VA: Kaori Ishihara, (Japanese)

  • Animal Motifs: Her ninja animal is the wild boar.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Her ninja outfit is a kimono-like two-piece ensemble that shows off her belly.
  • Cherry Blossom Girl: An interesting, somewhat darker play on the trope. Her name means "Cherry Trees in the Evening".
  • Close Range Combatant
  • The Comically Serious: Couldn't understand a joke if you dangled it in front of her face.
  • Don't Split Us Up: The oldest of twelve siblings, who was Promoted To Parent after their mother and father were killed in battle. Her desperation to keep her family together led her to become a Shinobi herself.
  • Duel to the Death/I Can Still Fight/Death Seeker: While fighting Katsuragi.
  • Expy: To Kanna Tanigawa from Ano Natsu De Matteru.
  • Extremity Extremist: She uses only punch-based attacks, which are in direct contrast to Katsuragi's kick-based attacks.
  • Ground Punch: One of her attacks.
  • Hand Blast: At higher levels of activity, Yozakura's gauntlets start releasing concussive shockwaves. Two of her Ninpo fire large blasts of energy.
  • Hidden Depths: Yozakura is very good at being a caretaker for others. This is evident in her flashback where she's able to take care of her 12 younger siblings all by herself and her role as a mother figure toward the rest of her team. She also ask the Instructor, in New Wave, if he/she has any siblings of their own.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Yozakura has very weird standards; she isn't against groping, so long its done right. The two times she says you can grope someone are behind closed doors with the one you love... or on a mission with unsuspecting guard. Because doing it all the time 'cheapens the whole thing'.
    • Also, she states kicking is only for men or uncouth girls; feminine women punch things instead.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: Hell Paradise Ten Thousand Hand Fist
  • Leitmotif: Floral Freedom
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: She has about eleven other siblings, with her saying that she and the rest of her siblings were born in a span of nine years.
  • Mighty Glacier: Very good health and offense, but very slow movement and attack speed.
  • Promotion to Parent: After her mother died, Yozakura was forced to act as a parent to all of her younger siblings. She was demoted when her father died.
  • Power Fist: While already devastating, her gauntlets can double in size to fire blasts of energy.
  • Rapidfire Fisticuffs: Enhanced by a pair of Power Fist gauntlets.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Minori's red oni.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: The last of her Ninpo releases a giant pair of energy fists that will swing around and smash anything in range.
  • Team Mom: In the earliest part of Shinovi Versus' Gessen storyline, there's some friendly dispute between her and Yumi over who the team leader actually is, since Yozakura is clearly this.
  • Telescoping Robot: Notice how large her gloves are already? They can grow even larger.
  • Tricked-Out Gloves: She uses giant iron gauntlets to fight (imagine Power Fist meets Arm Cannon or Pile Bunker, minus the spike). She likes her weapons so much than she go to great lengths to prove their effectiveness to a skeptical Yumi.
    • Apparently, her previous weapon was the spear.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair
  • You Killed My Father: She shares a more complex variation on this trope with Katsuragi.

    Shiki

Shiki

The Swanky, Stylishly Sassy Socialite

Oh, right, we're gonna 'fight for our schools,' or honor, or whatever.

A first year at Death Cram School. She speaks like a gal girl and gets into things easily, as well as her ninja friends. She has a lot of friends that she likes to hang out with and won't pass up the opportunity to go shopping. Despite her appearance, she is very studious & IT savvy. Wielding a disc-shaped scythe larger than her body, her flashy attack style involves hacking foes and summoning bats. Shiki also specializes in poisoning her adversaries.

Date of Birth: 25th of March
Age: 15
Blood Type: AB
Height: 161 cm (5'4")
Measurements: B95, W54, H83 (37-21-33)
Hobby: Midnight walks
Favorite Food: Tomato Juice.
Ninja Animal: Bat
Weapon: Double-sided Scythe
VA: Ayano Yamamoto, (Japanese)

  • Badass Bookworm: Shiki has an obsession towards the Heart Sutra. She also insists on reading Mirai's novel after defeating her, and spares her life so she can finish writing it.
  • Beauty Mark: On the bottom right side of her lips.
  • Cute Witch/Hot Witch: One half of her Shinobi outfit's theme.
  • Dumb Blonde: Defied. She tells Yagyu that "just 'cause I'm blonde doesn't mean I don't notice things, you know?"
  • Genius Bruiser/Warrior Therapist: Shiki has extensive knowledge of many ninja arts and techniques. With that knowledge, she's able to deduce what kind of techniques her opponents possess and how they can use them. Additionally, Shiki's very good at giving her team advice whenever they need it.
  • Grim Reaper: The other half of her outfit's theme.
  • Hidden Depths: While some of the girls are definitely this, Shiki runs with this trope. Externally, she appears to be just a very dumb valley girl who loves fashion more than being a Shinobi. As her story is revealed, however, we find out that Shiki is not only very intelligent, she embraces her grandfather's philosophy as much as the other girls, and recites the Heart Sutra as it gives her comfort.
  • Leitmotif: For Serious
  • Nice Hat: One that shoots bats nonetheless.
  • The Nicknamer: She just loves to give cute little nicknames to the other characters. Yaggie, Murmaid, Homurrabi etc.
  • Playful Hacker: The IT-savy girl for the Gessen team. Gets owned by Mirai in her arcade mission, though.
  • Poisonous Person: She can inflict a 'Poison' status with her attacks.
  • Sexy Whatever Outfit: Her outfit is basically a Stripperific version of a Witch Outfit mixed in with Grim Reaper themes.
  • Sinister Scythe
  • Smarter Than You Look: More serious than what her looks (a fashion-obsessed girl who loves to play with her friends) may suggest.
  • The Social Expert
  • Theme Naming: Her Ninja Arts are puns based on different Buddhism sayings.
  • Valley Girl: Of the Kogal kind. She is an outgoing and casual girl who is fashionable, wears more makeup than most of the other girls and can be seen chatting on her cellphone quite a bit, so she qualifies. Unlike most examples however she is not dumb. Look at Smarter Than You Look.
  • Vapor Wear: Her turnover outfit seems to be made of her bats, completely going nude to summon them all to attack for her in her Ultimate Ninpo. Just like Morrigan Aensland.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Look at Shiki's face. Those sharp eyes, the Beauty Mark, even her transformation showcasing a Grim Reaper theme, her ninja costume which seems to be made of garterbelts only, none of this would prepare you for the voice she has - it sounds like that of a small child.

Duh! We were playing pretend! Don't you know that when you teach a new game, you always let the newbie win first?

A first year at Death Cram School who is extremely immature despite her age. She loves to play around/enjoy herself and is a simple-minded child. Yozakura diligently tries to discipline/teach her manners. Using a bucket and frying pan her attacks are tricky, it looks as if she's using magic.

Date of Birth: 14th of February
Age: 15
Blood Type: AB
Height: 144 cm (4'8")
Measurements: B86, W50, H75 (34-20-30)
Hobby: Napping
Favorite Food: strawberry cake.
Ninja Animal: Hamster
Weapon: Magic bucket and frying pan
VA: Hiromi Igarashi, (Japanese)

  • Beware the Silly Ones: Sure she's the most childish and least intimidating one of the bunch, and she also has a tendency of playing around more than taking things seriously. However, absolutely none of this makes her a pushover.
  • Cute Little Fangs
  • Difficult but Awesome: Comparable to Hibari. She has an odd fighting style with short combos, but master her sweet stocking ability and she becomes a force to be reckoned with.
  • Frying Pan of Doom: Her other weapon she uses.
  • Genki Girl
  • Girlish Pigtails
  • Girly Bruiser
  • Improvised Weapon: Fights with an Hamtaro-themed bucket, a frying pan and candies.
  • Leitmotif: Let's Play!
  • Lethal Joke Character: Minori has the lowest stats in SV, making her one of the weakest. Just like Mirai and Hibari though, she has a unique ability that allows her to store a piece of candy in her bucket, rack up some combos and deal serious damage afterward.
  • One of the Kids
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Yozakura's blue
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's even shorter than Mirai, though she has a more shapely, well developed body like the rest of the girls. Her bust being even bigger than Hibari's. You can say that she's an Oppai loli.
  • Sweet Tooth: And how!

    Kurokage

Kurokage

Yumi's grandfather as well as Master Hanzo's rival, Kurokage. He acts as the guardian for Yumi and the other girls and hopes that his "all evil ninja are bad" way of thinking doesn't steer them to the same path he once walked. Like his granddaughter, he has an elemental affinity to ice.

  • The Faceless
  • Flash Step: And Kurokage uses it to play tag with his granddaughter.
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast: Black Shadow.
  • One-Man Army: Yumi outright believes he can destroy an entire army.

  • The Rival: Philosophically, to Hanzo.
  • Vigilante Man: This defined Kurokage when he became a renegade shinobi; he constantly killed evil ninja wherever he saw them, which was against the code of good ninja.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Hell-bent on annihilating all evil ninja after losing his family; begin to re-examine his beliefs toward the end of his life when thinking about what kind of legacy he want to leave to his adopted girls.

Other Characters

    Murasame

Murasame

Murasame is the son of the Houou family and Ikaruga is his adopted sister. He failed to become the heir of his family's legacy due to a perceived lack of shinobi skills - something his sister has in abundance, which he used to resent her something fierce for. He wishes that the two of them could put their differences aside, but every time they are together they seem to argue. He's a fourth year at a prestigious economic university where he proves himself to be an excellent businessman.

His weapon of choice is a chain-sickle - and since he won 6th place in a weapon proficiency championship it has not left his side.

Date of Birth: 6th of June
Age: 22
Blood Type: O
Height: 180 cm
Measurements: B?, W?, H?.
Hobbies: Outdoing Ikaruga
Favorite Food: Curry
Ninja Animal: Unknown
Weapon: Kusarigama
VA: Hiroki Yasumoto (Japanese, Anime), Kanehira Yamamoto (Japanese, Game), Scott Freeman (English)

  • Ax-Crazy: Well, he did break into his adopted sister's bedroom, and tried to hurt her just to take back their family heirloom by force... twice. He can also fly off the handle sometimes. (He's gotten much better, though).
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: He was first seen on the anime where, in line with his status as antagonist, he had a positively deranged aspect. Contrast it with his official render for Deep Crimson (some time after his Heel-Face Turn) where he's a player character and looks really handsome.
  • Character Development: In Shinovi Versus he starts making an active effort to get along with Ikaruga more, to the point where he attended a seminar intended to strengthen sibling bonds.
  • Fiction 500: While the family is prominent in the world of ninja, they are equally prominent in the world of finance. While he sucks at being a shinobi, he excels at business, which his father recognizes.
  • Gender Swap: In Estival Versus there will be a female version of Murasame available, identical in almost every way to standard Murasame except with visible cleavage. April Fool's!
  • Giving Someone the Pointer Finger: Gives a Phoenix Wright style one to Ikaruga and Yomi.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He was an excellent example back in the day, burning over the resentment of being a no-talent that had to be replaced. He successfully managed to convince himself that Ikaruga stole Hien from him. (He just as notably worked himself out of this).
  • Harmless Villain: Back when he was still consumed with his grudge over Ikaruga displacing him as heir to the family's Ancestral Weapon Hien, he once broke into Ikaruga's room and foolishly challenged her for Hien. She dropped him through a trapdoor.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: He's quite insecure about how he pales as a shinobi to Ikaruga, and constantly tries to prove himself to be better than she is. He does end up taking comfort with the fact that he can say he's smarter than she is with him graduating a business course in college.
  • Japanese Sibling Terminology: Despite his grudge against her, Ikaruga still feels conflicted about the situation as she simply just wants to get along with him. She even refers to him as Onii-sama.
  • Jerk Ass: Despite character development, he's still full of himself.
  • Joke Character: Very much so in Senran Kagura 2. He's got a massive case of What the Fu Are You Doing?, suffers the exact same Clothing Damage mechanics as the girls (down to a single pair of white bikini briefs), has only one special and one Combination Attack (in which Ikaruga does most of the work), no Shinobi Transformation to speak of, and still manages to be a pompous twit nonetheless. In a world with competent and lethal shinobi, he can somehow manage to hold his own.
    • Lethal Joke Character: Surprisingly though, Murasame is actually quite useful as a support character. A lot of his attacks have Mercy Invincibility (which normally occurs for the rest of the cast only during their specials); one example is his heavy aerial attack (head-diving straight down and getting stuck up to his neck), which has so much MI, it can be used to avoid multiple attacks.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Deep Crimson naturally assumes you know about his Heel-Face Turn in Shinovi Versus.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Word of God stated that Murasame gets the same sexy treatment that the girls get. He even mentions perusing certain material in order to get the form right for Murasame's fanservice scenes.
  • Old Save Bonus: You can unlock him in Deep Crimson with data from a Burst save. Otherwise, he's DLC.
  • Progressively Prettier: He has two major phases of design, (1) deranged Beady-Eyed Loser and (2) Mr. Fanservice.
  • Promoted to Playable: Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson marks his first playable appearance, as well as the first male to be playable in the series.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: In Shinovi Versus he mentions that the family is a major donor to the school and so he can practically waltz his way in to the secret ninja school by simply name-dropping himself. This is presumably how he snuck into Ikaruga's room earlier in the series.
  • Stock Ninja Weaponry: He uses a Kusarigama with (perhaps) some skill.
  • The Unfavorite: His family thinks he's good for nothing and not capable of inheriting their heirloom katana Hien. Which was why they adopted Ikaruga, who was far more talented, meaning her to inherit the blade and succeed the family as a strong shinobi. He was not pleased with this, and tried to take Hien from Ikaruga, believing himself to be the rightful inheritor. His efforts were always futile.
  • Upper-Class Twit: Even after his Heel-Face Turn, he's still a pompous twit. If he doesn't know who you are (even if you happen to be Master Hanzo himself), he'll assume your name wasn't worth knowing in the first place.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He wears an open coat, which is his only outfit.
  • What the Fu Are You Doing?: Playable or no, his parents weren't exactly wrong when they decided he was lacking in talent. In Deep Crimson, a lot of his combos involve him attacking wildly, kicking dirt, tripping over his chains or getting wrapped up in them. Heck, he'll whack himself in the head during his Idle Animation.

Asking her any tough questions just might end up making her literally blow up. When it’s all said and done, while she’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, she’s nonetheless self-aware of her actions and feels bad when she does something wrong.      Kafuru

Kafuru

The half-pint princess of snark herself.

Lame excuses are for babies and if you can’t concentrate well enough, that’s just a sign of how good you really are. I think we know who wins this argument.

Kafuru is the youngest of the Mikagura sisters. A girl with a selfish and calculating streak, she often speaks to others in a condescending manner, riling them up. Whether it’s through her fluent use of Internet slang or clever use of baby talk, her mockery knows no bounds. That being said, she knows better than to try and adopt those same mannerisms with her sisters, though she is known to tease Hanabi from time to time. She has a chest that’s neither big nor particularly small.

With her ability to use water to her advantage, Kafuru can annihilate a wide area foes. She can even summon her dolphin in some of her ninja arts.

     Orochi

Orochi

The Final Boss of Skirting Shadows, and the final stage of Crimson Girls. In Shinovi Versus, Orochi is revealed to be a Yoma summoned by Dōgen to be used as a weapon of war.
  • Boss Rush: In Crimson Girls, you must fight each of the possessed Hebijo students after defeating Asuka.
  • Demonic Possession: Does this to the Hebijo students in Crimson Girls, requiring Homura to defeat her comrades in order to set them free. Implied to also be the case in Skirting Shadows.
  • Demoted to Extra: The closest thing it gets to an appearance in the anime is a three-minute cameo as Dōgen's Ninpo, "Giant Serpent".
  • Eldritch Abomination: Where to start? It seems to be one-third humanoid giant, one-third dragon, and one-third Humongous Mecha. Four of its five necks have no heads on them, instead ending in great masses of bloodstained katanas. It has two bizarre mechanical appendages that can only be described as giant tennis rackets covered in bloodstained katanas. On its central neck is the head of a mecha-dragon, covered in bloodstained katanas, and in the head's mouth is a human face, contorted with rage. Oh, and the sound of its roar is mixed with a baby crying.
    • Eldritch Location: Its insides, see Womb Level below. It's a weird red version of the normal world with odd features like floating interfaces in the background and rotating gears on the floor. It also has inexplicable grassy meadows and you can hear Orochi's heartbeat wherever you go.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: In Crimson Girls, regardless of which character you select the mission with, you will always control Homura during the brief "meadow sequences" leading to the fight against each possessed Hebijo student.
  • Giant Space Flea Out Of Nowhere: You thought that Crimson Homura was the final boss of Skirting Shadows? Nope! Have a Eldritch Abomination instead.
  • Orochi: Probably one of the more horrifying renditions of the good old eight-headed serpent.
  • Tail Slap: A really powerful one at that. In Burst, it can shred through half of your clothing bar in one strike.
  • Wave Motion Gun: One of its attacks is a massive laser beam that can only be avoided by remaining airborne or hiding in a specific spot.
  • Walking Spoiler: There is a lot what can be said about her(?) and one of them isn't expected.
  • Warm-Up Boss: Oddly enough, the tutorial for Crimson Girls pits it against Homura in a nightmare sequence.
  • Womb Level: In Crimson Girls, the final mission takes place inside its body.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Orochi's brief appearance in the anime looks like five gigantic white worms with Lamprey Mouths, four eyes and claws growing around the mouth and its body being covered in flames.
