Hanzō National Academy
Through constant battles with their Hebijo rivals, the girls of Hanzō National Academy forged lifelong friendships - not only with each other as a team, but with their rivals as competitors and equals. Six months ago, the Hanzō girls scored a decisive victory, defeating the Hebijo Elites and driving them into hiding. Since then, peace has reigned at Hanzō National Academy, and the girls have devoted themselves to their training. But the times of peace have changed, as new threats and old are about to converge in a battle royale the likes of which the shinobi world has never seen.
Related to all Hanzo Academy shinobi
Berserk Button: Since they formed a bond with the Crimson Squad, they'll get really pissed if you insult any one of them.
Big Damn Heroes: There have been some instances of this. The first one was there rescue and retrieval of Hibari from Hebijo. Another was Ikaruga and the others saving Asuka from Murakumo when she was about to kill her.
Pervert Revenge Mode: Subverted. They throw wash bins at Hanzo for perving on them at the hot springs, but being the legendary ninja he is, he dodges every last one. He does back off when Asuka threatens to "tell grandma". This has happened three times already.
We're the same in so many ways, and yet so different. We come to blows whenever we meet. Maybe it's fate.
Asuka. Terrific Heroine. No Personality
A 2nd-year student at Hanzō Academy, Asuka is the granddaughter of the famous ninja Hanzō, who also serves as the principal of the Academy. Feeling driven to live up to her grandfather's legacy, Asuka is energetic and willing to work as hard as she can, training everyday to master the Path of the Shinobi. Her primary weapons are two wakizashis, and her Ninpo are based on toads, as well as having an affinity for Earth.
Adaptational Wimp: Game!Asuka is portrayed as a hot-blooded warrior with a constant drive to improve herself. In comparaison, anime!Asuka is a klutz. She also has a fear of frogs in the anime, which she doesn't have in the games.
Animal Motifs: Frogs (note that the rival school consists of Snake Girls). Her ultimate ninpo in Shinovi Versus is to summon a giant frog that she can ride around on briefly.
For Great Justice: Being the only character without a Dark and Troubled Past, Asuka's main reason for following the way of shinobi is to protect her friends, her family... basically everyone from the shadows. For her, there is nothing more noble than protecting this world without expecting any thanks in return.
The Jack Of All Trades part is actually a significant part of her character — she realizes that everyone else at Hanzo is better than her at something, and constantly trains to try to bridge the gap.
Not So Different: Homura and her both have similar upbringings, but the key difference is that Homura was kicked out of her home for defending herself. Had Asuka been in a similar situation, she likely could of ended up like Homura.
Not Afraid to Die: Asuka explicitely state during Hebi's arc that ever since she has receveid her name as a ninja (Asuka and all the other girls' names are code-names), she doesn't fear death anymore. Life and death are two sides of one coin, to live is to be prepared to die.
If I can't pass the real test, my walk along the Path of the Shinobi ends. Everything I have established will have been wasted.
Rest assured. You will be disciplined.
Ikaruga is a 3rd-year student at Hanzō Academy, as well as the Class Representative of the Hanzō girl's class. She is a talented girl, daughter of a man in a large financial conglomerate, as well as a prestigious ninja clan. She has been held in high honours she she was a young girl, and trained in the Japanese tea ceremony. She is rather skilled at Japanese cooking, however, her own experimental cooking is another matter.Ikaruga's primary weapon is the Hiennote Flying/Rising Swallow, a family heirloom passed down to her by her father. Her Ninpo is centered around phoenixes, and has an affinity for the Fire element because of this.
Cool Big Sis: Fills this role in age and the responsible emotional-maturity that Katsuragi completely lacks.
Dark and Troubled Past: She was originally from a no-name, poor ninja family. She was adopted in a heritaged family to fill the role of the heir instead of the family's good-for-nothing son, and she's currently in dispute with her (completely insane) big brother over the inheritance of the clan.
Also, her fighting style resembles like the one used by Jin Kisaragi. Also overlaps with Actor Allusion, as Jin is nicknamed "The Hero of Ikaruga" and he has a cousin (Tsubaki Yayoi) who is voiced by Asami Imai. Even she use an attack that resembles Jin's Reito and his ice attacks, except she use fire instead here.
Fragile Speedster / Glass Cannon: She has low strength and defense, but is extremely damaging with attacks that cover a wide area and can do some damage quick....Very quick.
Hime Cut: She grows her hair longer because Katsuragi says it's nice. It was said after a violent heart-to-heart.
Implausible Fencing Powers: While using the Hien Phoenix Dance, Ikaruga leaps into the air, grips Hien between her feet and descends down upon her target, drilling her blade into them as she slides along the ground, causing massive damage. How this is even possible is a wonder in itself.
Team Mom: Doubly so as she's the only girl of adult age in her gumi (obviously, Katsuragi in SV doesn't count)
Toku: Ikaruga performs entertainment like these under the name of KP Kamen (KP standing for "Kami no ke", hair, and "Pattsun", uniformly straight cut bangs). In the localizations, it's "BC Mask", standing for "Black hair with cut straight bangs".
Yamato Nadeshiko: After reading this far down the list you should know why: a formal and polite lady who wields a nodachi styles her hair in a hime cut.
Let's see how much you've grown. You know, besides your boobs, 'cause I can already see those.
Master of sexual-kickedherassment
Katsuragi is a 3rd-year student at Hanzō Academy, Katsuragi was among the first to join the Academy out of the current available girls. Hotblooded and boisterous, Katsuragi prefers to "act first and think later". A tomboy through and through, she wears nothing under her school uniform. Disregarding even these, her quirks are many and various. Katsuragi has a weakness for cute girls, and takes much delight in sexually harassing them. She loves ramen so much that she is now famous for being late to class simply to finish eating it.Katsuragi is particularly skilled in acrobatic and weaponless combat, particularly specialising in kicks augmented by her metal boots. Her Ninpo centers around the Chinese Dragon, and she has an affinity for Wind-element techniques.
It turns out that her parents are alive, but must fight to save them in the Battle Royale.
Difficult but Awesome: Being the type of character she is, she controls rather stiffly compared to the other Hanzō girls. Not only that, it's trickier to pull a long chain of combos most of the time. However, if one were to get the hang of Kat's Foe-Tossing Charge and timing to keep a steady combo, she can be very deadly.
Everything's Better with Spinning/Spin Attack: Several of Katsuragi's attacks incorporating spinning or drilling motions into them. While the most notable is the Tornado Spindle, one of the most impressive is the Dead Screw Dragon , which involves channeling an energy dragon around her body and spinning while drilling into her target.
Expy: A blonde-haired, hotblooded shinobi who loves ramen, is rather perverted, rarely thinks about her actions before she does it, lost both of her parents at an early age, and utilises the Wind element in their techniques? Sounds quite a lot like another hot-blooded, blonde ninja from another series.
Golden Super Mode: While everyone has this in Burst, as the use of Life or Death mode (Frantic in localizations) gives the girls a surging golden aura, Katsuragi, with her hotblooded nature and love of fighting, as well as golden hair and green eyes, deserves her own personal mention. Why? She looks and fights like a Super Saiyan.
Magic Skirt: Obviously not seen anywhere, but here's a variation; try a Magic Shirt. Despite it just being a normal unbuttoned shirt, it never reveals her nipples. You could swear the damn thing's glued on.
When it's destroyed, she has a bizarre breast-harness under it that shouldn't be able to stay on without the aid of either magic or lots of body tape. To make things even more magic, the thing's very existence contradicts her insistence that she doesn't wear anything under her uniform.
Not Quite Flight: In Shinovi Versus, Katsuragi is one of the few characters capable of limited gliding. While unexplained in anyone else, for Katsuragi, her gliding may actually stem from her Wind abilities.
Stripperiffic: For some reason, she rarely buttons her shirt. This has to do with the fact that Ikaruga slashed open those buttons when she first opened to her. Being unbuttoned is a symbol of relationship.
Thou Shalt Not Kill: in Shinovi Versus, she is is really torn when Yozakura refuses to yield after their fight, claiming she will continue fighting till Katsuragi kills her; the catch is Katsuragi has to win her fight to save her parents. She regains her composure when Hikage tell her she much prefers the Katsuragi who have mindless fun when fighting.
Tomboy: On second thought, she's more likely a boy born into a girl's body.
Tricked-Out Shoes: Not only are her greaves razor-sharp, they can also pull out what are essentially wind spurs.
Underboobs: featured gloriously in episode 4 of the anime adaptation.
A 1st-year at Hanzō Academy, Yagyū has considerable talent for her age and schoolyear. She is a taciturn of sorts, revealing little emotion. As a shinobi, is always resolute. She immensely cares for Hibari, her fellow 1st-year, and will go to immense lengths to protect her. Yagyū notably loves squid, always carrying dried squid, her favorite food, on her person. Her primary weapon is the bladed oilpaper umbrella she always carries on her. Her Ninpo is centered around squids, and she has an affinity for the Rain-element.
Glass Cannon: Her defense is very low but her overall attack power is pretty good and her secret artes do a lot of damage and are perfect for fighting multiple enemies. As compared to Ikaruga, she's a bit tougher, but also a bit less damaging — but has useful projectile attacks that Ikaruga lacks.
Hates Being Alone: After Hibari transferred to Hebijo to get back the Super Secret Ninja Scroll, Yagyū vowed to get her back, stating she absolutely cannot be without Hibari. Yagyū is not only afraid of losing Hibari, in whom she sees her younger sister who died, but afraid of winding up alone again.
No Sense of Humor: She is probably the most serious one about what it means to be a ninja.
Ore Onna: Uses exclusively masculine Japanese vocabulary in her normal speech, up to and including the aggressive-masculine "Ore" to refer to herself; this is considered even LESS normal and acceptable than girls using the gentle-masculine form "boku" in Japanese society.
Serious Business: Even card games are serious business to Yagyū if Hibari is involved.
Yagyū: -directed at the Joker card which caused her to lose- Unforgivable. This is your fault, you damned jester...
The Stoic: She's naturally very quiet, which bits her badly when she actually gets badly injured at one point.
Weapon of Choice: Her umbrella. The trailer shows her performing Daikaruganote Traditional Japanese "juggling" involving keeping a ball balanced on a spinning umbrella without letting it get thrown away by the spin. with a delivery truck.
My family was always nice to me, even when I made mistakes. All their sweetness toward me spoiled me for years.
A 1st-year student at Hanzō Academy, Hibari joined at the same time as Yagyū. She comes from a long line of Shinobi, but is rather self-conscious of her own limits as compared to her ancestors. Despite good intentions, she generally ends up as an accidental troublemaker. Due to being comparatively weak in combat (and well aware of it), Hibari makes up for it with her wits. With a deceptive fighting style, ever shifting in appearance, her Ninpo centers around rabbits. Hibari's elemental affinity is that of Lightning.
Kiriya is the Shinobi class instructor at Hanzō Academy. Born to a long line if shinobi, it was decided at an early age that Kiriya would follow suit. Despite having immense aptitude for the way of the Shinobi, Kiriya grew disgusted with the way that shinobi had to risk their lives with each mission, and turned to the teaching department instead. He strives to build his students into full-fledged shinobi. Due to tragic circumstances involving a former student, he tries not to interfere too much with his current shinobi-in-training. Kiriya believes in teaching his students everything he knows, while giving them the independence to be strong on their own.He is a taciturn and strict teacher, but this is because of his high expectations for his students.
Badass: Allegedly, he was an elite shinobi in the past, and the "best of the best". Whatever skills he had besides explosive teleportation are never really shown.
Cool Teacher: A shinobi sensei dressed in a black suit, with white hair, whose primary method of coming and going is body flickering, Kiriya definitely qualifies.
Expy: After he fails to become a Magus, apparently Kariya become a master ninja instead.
He also seems to be quite similar to Kakashi. A white-haired ninja master, who is now a stern teacher, raised from his youth to be a ninja, his parents were even ninja as well. To top it off, he even lost someone important to him on a mission in the past, and it pretty much has affected him throughout the rest of his life.
To top it even more off, the lost one turns out to be alive and became a member of the Enemies Team
Informed Ability: Despite being described as an elite, he's rarely seen doing anything in the games or the anime. And, despite being a shinobi, he seems to be rather easy to trick, having been duped by the Hebi girls at least twice, and just one clash with Suzune from Hebi left him injured in the anime. Perhaps being retired dulled his skills?
My Greatest Failure: He considers saving Rin during her Shinobi test (he saved her from getting shot by a doll before anyone could notice, thus allowing her to pass her test), allowing her to become a full-fledged Shinobi and leading to her dying on a mission a few months later, as the greatest failure of his life.
Retired Badass: According to Rin, Kiriya used to be an elite ninja, the best of the best. He's currently working as a shinobi sensei now, because, while missions pose the risk of death, teaching doesn't.
Smoke Out: At least in anime, he really likes to use smoke bombs to either enter or exit places.
In order to gain true power, you must use both the katana and the shield.
The legendary shinobi and Asuka's grandfather. He is a master that is very well known throughout the shinobi realm. Maikaku Special Duty Intel Department's Special Secret Intel Agent. In other words, he's also considered the founder of the shinobi squad. With the prodigy shinobi's name as the foundation, Hanzo Academy was built for the sole purpose of conditioning future talents in this ancent art.He is a generally friendly person and is very found of his granddaughter Asuka. He is also the provider of the futomaki that Asuka and friends are often seen eating which he prepares in his shop.Like his grand-daughter he has the ability to summon Tree Frogs.
Date of Birth: Unknown
Blood Type: Unknown
Measurements: B?, W?, H?.
Favorite Food: Unknown
VA: Kanehira Yamamoto (Japanese), Bill Brooks (English)
Badass Grandpa: He may be retired, but he still is a legendary shinobi.
Dirty Old Man: Not really so on the Hanzo side of Burst, but definitely on the Hebijo side. In fact, he's the one responsible for the Hanzo students getting their cover blown when they all meet up for the first time at the hot springs and he quite openly peeps on them.
Exceptionally Tolerant: There must be darkness for light to exist. Take a fondness on Homura (for more than just seeing her in the hot springs even).
The Bet: Incite Yumi to defy Hanzo academy. He has to be awfully confident in his grand-daughter's abilities so that nobody will die.
An enigmatic senior student who dons a Gakuran and a dangerous aura. A third year at Hanzou Academy. For some reason she's become a legendary senior student that continues to reign over the school. She's never at school but sometimes she unexpectedly comes back. She has overwhelming speed and power, but despite being a ninja she never tries to conceal herself.Gouging out the ground and splitting the air, her fighting style involves flinging herself at the enemy.
Boobs of Steel: Most likely. She looks really strong, and has the second-largest bust of all the girls: 100 cm. (Just 1 cm bigger than Haruka!)
Digital Bikini: Wears a Japanese Fundoshi as her bikini if she receives enough clothing damage or if she's in frantic mode. While Normally a thong, her fundoshi has a large patch of completely unrendered white that covers her cheeks.
Megaton Punch: Her signature move. If she catches you on the ground when her HP is in the red, she will use an unavoidable, One-Hit Kill dragon punch.
Mighty Glacier: She hits likes a tank and has a lot more health than anyone else, but she is also the slowest character out of the whole cast, so keeping a high hit count with her during a mission is harder to do.
Nice Hat: The one that looks like Kujo Jotaro's. Wearing it changes her normally-blonde hair to black, thus creating her signature look.
The dark layer vanishing is fitting, as upon suffering clothing damage Daidouji loses her wild, menacing black wig, revealing her much more feminine golden locks of hair, making her look overall less intimidating.
Unflinching Walk: Daidōji is the only character who has this as her default speed. The only time she ever runs is when dashing.
Homura Crimson Squad
For reasons of their own, the five former Hebijo Elites chose to let their school burn rather than defend it to the death. Six months later, they continue to pay for that decision. Together on the run, they live as renegades, eking out a menial living by day, keeping one open every night. With their school rebuilt and out for blood, it's only a matter of time before they face their final reckoning.
Dressing as the Enemy: In the anime, they wear Hanzo academy uniforms to infiltrate the school under all the normal students noses.
Noble Demon: The Hebijo girls are far from being as evil as they seem; in fact, the game goes to lengths to show that they are in fact really close to the Hanzō girls while being much more aware than them that they chose to live in a dark and violent world. Hell, "evil shinobi" means little more than being a mercenary rather than an actual villain.
What the hell are you doing, tits-for-brains?! Nobody else can beat you but me!
A former 2nd-year student. Leader of the Hebi Girls, and has a fierce rivalry with Asuka. In addition to six Katana which she wields at the same time, she carries a Nōdachi on her back. In Middle School she wasn't planning on becoming an evil ninja, she was actually from a good ninja clan. Ever since her first year of Elementary school she had been training to become a ninja. Her teacher in Middle School was a kind male University graduate. Every day she was training and under a lot of pressure from her parents, the stress built up. Her teacher was a sort of 'oasis' for her. He would listen to her talk about pointless things, etc. He was a 'special existence' to Homura. In her second year she talked to the teacher about her plans after Middle School. She reveals her family’s ninja secret for him to keep as a secret. Upon receiving this information her teacher then attacked her, revealing to be an evil ninja. This caused Homura to snap, she doesn't remember a thing that happened after that other than a blood stained teacher's face. She says if she hadn't met that evil ninja she might've just been a normal Middle School student. She was thrown out of her home because of this act, her parents didn't even listen to her pleas.Betrayed by people and disowned by her parents she wandered the streets, where she is confronted by a woman who offers her the option to join Hebijo, stating that "The past doesn't matter, Hebijo welcomes anyone. Evil ninja are more tolerant than good ninja."
Blood Knight: Homura has stated in the first game that she fights to feel alive. After she got disowned by her parents, she felt she lacked a purpose in life. Fighting allows her to truly feel alive.
Homura:When the people I loved most cast me aside, my heart stopped beating. But when I am in the middle of a fight, I realize that I can still feel alive. Yes. If I'm not fighting as a shinobi, I'm no better than a corpse.
She considers the fact that Hanzō and Hejibo both exist is reason enough for them to fight. When you consider what "evil/dark shinobi" actually means, this is the equivalent of Blackwater Worldwide declaring war on the United States For the Evulz.
Dark and Troubled Past: She was banished from her family due to her killing an evil ninja who attacked her when she was still a middle-school student. She did it as a self-defense, but they shut her out anyway.
I Did What I Had to Do: Rather brutally Deconstructed. Her defending herself and killing the man who was going to kill her results in her being thrown out and loses the chance to become a Light Shinobi and while she defended herself, it's shown she herself does not exactly justify it.
Katanas Are Just Better: Why yes, they are so good that she wields six of them. She carries a nōdachi, which she doesn't normally use unless she becomes Crimson Homura, in which case she primary uses it.
Pet the Dog: Homura reveals she wears frilly pink pajamas, so that Mirai will feel less insecure about her bear-print panties, in addition to telling her that, at Hebijo, seniority doesn't matter, they are all comrades.
We're renegades We can't afford to live in luxury.
A former 2nd-year student. Despite the pleasant demeanor, she's pretty aggressive and unpredictable inside. Yomi lived and grew up in the slums and harbours with great hate for people who're satisfied with life. She watched her own parents die because of their poverty. In the street when she was having a meal, on the TV she heard that Ikaruga's foster father was giving enormous aid to overseas countries. This turned Yomi's hate towards Ikaruga. Yomi doesn't know the full details but it seems that her parents sold her off for their own desires. In the Hanzō arc even until the end she held onto her hatred, but in the Hebijou arc, due to a certain item, she and Ikaruga eventually became friends.Although she's poor she's not interested in money. When Haruka offered her a 10,000 yen reward she turned it down, "as long as I can buy bean sprouts" she said and so she was satisfied with just 20 yen. She herself says that she's had large breasts since she was a child.
Ax-Crazy: Her obsession of bean sprouts and actions against anyone who's wealthy, or comes off as wealthy, gets pretty scary sometimes.
Ikaruga: Wait! You said you had to kill me to complete your mission! What is the meaning of this?
Yomi: Those who sneer at bean sprouts will someday die by bean sprouts. That is the meaning of this.
Berserk Button: Are you a rich princess? Do you find any other delicacy of food other than bean sprouts to be quite delicious? Then congratulations! Yomi will now take your head off!
BFS: Has a gigantic broadsword, which is both thick AND long, and she can extend it even further in one of her ninpos.
Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She's very polite, sweet and always sports a pleasant smile. But, it masks her aggressive and sadistic side.
Bizarre Taste in Food: Due to having grown up in poverty, Yomi has bizarre tastes in foods that she's had to eat to make ends meet, such as cabbage cores, hornet larvae boiled in soy sauce, but even she turns her nose up at earthworms.
Insane Troll Logic: Yomi believes people with money shouldn't be allowed to have good hearts, purely because, as a child, she never met anyone with money who cared about helping the poor like her and her family. She flies into a rage at Ikaruga, who is rather rich, but also takes time out of her day to help the poor after her last encounter with Yomi, which causes her to rethink herself.
Keigo: Always uphold politeness, even when she's delivering beatdown to someone while telling them how much they suck.
Muscles Are Meaningless: In the Hebijo intro for Burst, she's seen lifting weights stacked upon dozens of other weights. This part of her training might be why she's able to carry around her huge sword.
Onee-sama: Yomi convinces Mirai to call her "Onee-sama" (Sis in the localizations) because she's always wanted to be one.
Pet the Dog: To Mirai, when Yomi reveals she wears a stomach band to sleep, to help her over her insecurity with her bear panties.
Pimped-Out Dress: It's a gown, and it doesn't look like a combat gear or for that matter practical. When you've been stuck in poverty and you suddenly have the power to make clothing out of thin air, you would pimp that out too.
Trademark Favorite Food: Everyone in the series has one, but hers is worth mentioning: if something doesn't have bean sprouts in it, she simply doesn't like it. She always talks about bean sprouts, even in battle!
Their actions and reactions stand in direct contrast to their feelings. I seriously don't understand at all.
A former 3rd-year student. She's strong, but doesn't have much motivation to do anything. As such, she keeps avoiding Katsuragi's challenges. Hikage didn't even have emotions as a child. She was abandoned and grew up in a children's home. After some time she escaped the home and joined a thieves gang. The lifestyle and fighting style of the leader of that gang, Hinata, were great influences on Hikage. Other than that she hasn't spoken much else of her past. The knife she wields belonged to Hinata herself. At some point Hikage was recruited into the Hebijo academy where she quickly became a member of the Elite Class in her 1st year. She was the second member to join the Elite Class.
Adaptational Villainy: The anime paints her in a worse light than in the games, where she is more prone of sporting a Slasher Smile and being bit more sadistic. In Haruka's brief explanation of the rest of her team, she claims she is a Child Soldier, where as in games, she was an emotionless orphan who grew with a street gang.
Animal Motifs: Snakes, and she even has a Cobra as her ninja animal.
Dark and Troubled Past: She grew up on the streets, and was adopted by a female gang leader named Hinata who was killed in a fight some times afterward. Her signature knife is a Tragic Keepsake of her mentor.
Defrosting Ice Queen: In Shinovi Versus. Katsuragi is astonished when Hikage jokes about groping Katsuragi as a reward for helping with her training.
Emotionless Girl: Hikage is a very strange example of the trope. She claims to have no emotions, and is unable to feel anything. Yet numerous points in the series show that she is very much capable of emotion, she just appears to be unaware of it. As a child, when her mentor Hinata, the closest thing she'd had to a parent, was killed, and Hikage found her body, she broke down crying. A similar situation happened in Burst, when she thought Mirai had been killed, Hikage began to cry as well.
Expy: She looks a lot like Yuuka Kazami, even sharing some aspects of her personality. In fact, there's a lot of fan-art of both Yuuka and Hikage sharing their clothes or being together.
Flechette Storm: Her Aerial Ninpo has her summon a snake-like construct made of knives that she flings at the target.
Fragile Speedster: To contrast with Katsuragi, she is very fast. However her Health is average.
Tragic Keepsake: The combat knife Hikage wields used to belong to Hinata, the leader of her gang and the closest thing Hikage had to a parent. Hikage took the knife with her after finding Hinata dead in a back alley, slashed to ribbons, feeling as if the knife held the woman's soul.
The Rival: Initially she holds the Nothing Personal principle, but after trading enough blows with Katsuragi, she feels that she's in some way aroused by her.
See, I may be a renegade, but I have a secret identity as well.
A former 1st-year student and Gothic Lolita, who looks a bit younger than she actually is. She has a fixation on Yagyū, who was her very first opponent in combat. Mirai was bullied a lot and so became distrustful of other humans. She searched the Hebijo BBS for some friends, but after the influences of a certain incident, she got the wrong impression and thought that she might end up hurting her friends. To prevent this, she ran away from Hebijo; however, her friends caught up and told her how much they loved her. She was the last member to join the Hebijo Elite Class.
A-Cup Angst: Downplayed, but it's there. The fans often joke that it's the #1 reason that she's constantly bullied.
Antagonistic Counterpart: A mirror-match in a number of ways to Yagyū: same schoolyear in different schools, eyepatches of different designs and materialsnote Hers is more mechanical and modern, while Yagyū's is more traditional. in opposite positions, different types of umbrellas, hair color, etc.
BFG: Valkyrie sure counts. It's bigger than she is!
Butt Monkey: She's about as weak as Hibari when it comes to being a ninja, but she acts big and considers Yagyū her rival. Yagyū is a Child Prodigy. Yagyū also tends to ignore Mirai when she appears, being more focused on something else, much of her annoyance.
Lethal Joke Character: In-game only, a pure ranged fighter with the ability to counter attacks just when you think it is safe to attack her at melee range? She is this in spades.
Her Ninja Arts bring more and more dakka as they come. In Burst, it starts with an anti-tank rifle, goes to multiple gatling guns beneath her skirt and ends with combining the firepower from Valkyrie and her umbrella. It follows similar suit in Versus, expect that her final Ninja Art is her pulling out a giant cannon on wheels with multiple guns on its side!
To be honest, I couldn't get my mind off you either. Your cries were so...fulfilling.
A former 3rd-year student. A sadistic Ojou, Haruka likes to pick on weaker people. Perhaps that explains why she seems to have her eyes on Hibari. Her mother loved her excessively, and kept her in the house all the time and treated her like a doll. Her father, who was a doctor, was corrupt and having a bunch of affairs. Haruka was brought to the point where she wanted to burn her house down. Suzune stepped in and stopped her, and taught her puppetry skills. With those skills she forced her father to come forward and admit to his corruption. After that she effortlessly enrolled into Hebijou. She was the first member to join the Elite Class and was already a 3rd year by the time the others joined.
Genius Bruiser: Highly intelligent? Check. Capable of beating foes within an inch of their life? Check. Very sexy? Double check.
Gradual Grinder: She's the only shinobi who's capable of inflicting multiple status effects on her opponents.
I Just Want to Have Friends: She genuinely wants to be friends with Hibari. Although in her case, it's not clear whether she means it in the traditional sense, looking for a lesbian pet rabbit or even both.
Robot Buddy: Ever since Versus, Haruka has a small battle robot hidden in her lab coat. It has piston punches, claws, chainsaws, flamethrowers and a notable AI, considering it's capable of fawning over Haruka.
Sexy Sadist: She's a total sadist and enjoys making sexy-fun of Hibari. One can suspect that there is a rape scene missing in episode 9.
Stripperiffic: Again, her outfit (along with Shiki) is the most scanty one out of the 22 girls. No, Katsuragi doesn't count; that girl wasn't trying to wear much to begin with.
Too Kinky to Torture: Haruka very blatantly enjoys being beaten to the point of having her clothing shredded.
Hebijo Clandestine Girls' Academy was renowned throughout the criminal underworld for its ruthless spies and vicious assassins - until the school burned down in a terrible battle six months ago. Now, from the old school's smoke and ashes, a new leader emerges. Her followers hail from all corners of the shinobi world, each one proud in her own way to call herself "evil." Their first mission: Hunt down the school's former Elites, punish their failure and betrayal, and restore the name of Hebijo to its former glory.
The Bullish and Beastly Brandisher of Black Blazes
You think this is all a game, with rules and fairness and happy endings. You have no idea what a shinobi truly is.
A 3rd year student and the leader of the new group at Hebijo, and a member of the earlier generation before Homura's. She lost her abilities and memory after an accident during a mission. She stands for the Private Ladies Academy of the Serpent and plans to restore Hebijo's honor.
Lightning Bruiser: Miyabi is frighteningly tough. Her high endurance allows her to chase down her opponents, as well as having high offense and attack speed for pulling off long combos. She can also perform very fast launchers capable of sending opponents in the air very quick. Her defense is also very impressive for when she takes a hit. She can actually give Homura a run for her money.
Berserk Button: Don't insinuate that Bebe-tan is just a toy. Minori learns this the hard way.
When Imu and Murasaki were younger, Imu snatched Bebe-tan away from Murasaki so she would stop being so dependent her. The end result was her waking up to see Imu out cold by her feet followed by her father informing her of the cursed spirit power she possesses. Stating that by detonating her mental strength, the ninja art increases the power of the body ten times.
Another instance was when a Hebijo examiner came to her room. When he was about to grab Bebe-tan, her cursed spirit power activated again. When Murasaki came to, her feet were covered by the examiner's blood. It was then revealed to be an entrance exam for Hebijo, which, much to her shock, she passes.
Another thing to also take note is that Murasaki thinks of Bebe-tan as a very closesurrogate sister. Should anyone, and we mean ANYONE, try to take, steal, or rip Bebe-tan apart; she will not have any mercy.
Dark and Troubled Past: She originally didn't want to become a shinobi, but was forced to by her father under the suspicion that she was using her cursed spirit power for her own gain. Soon after, Imu tries to take Bebe-tan away from Murasaki because she thought it was weighing her down. Because of her cursed power, this resulted in her hurting Imu, killing a Hebijo scout, receiving more attention than Imu, and threatened her own family for trying to exploit her power. She's felt that Imu was resentful of her ever since and would rather be around Miyabi.
Miyabi, let me kill them. I'll finish all of them right now.
Miyabi's childhood friend and Murasaki's older sister. She, along with Miyabi, was hospitalized for a full year after an accident that left her in the hospital and is suffering from amnesia cause of it.
Shock and Awe: She can use her staff to stun her opponents in some of her attacks.
Superpower Meltdown: She experiences one during the final mission of the Hebijo story in SV when her cursed spirit power awakens. Suzune even warns Miyabi that Imu has become as powerful as a Yoma at that point. Thankfully, Miyabi is able to save her and she gets better.
The Rival: To a extent, Hikage, though it's one-sided on Imu's part holding a grudge against her for those incidents and challenged her frequently which the green haired girl turned down.
I need to hurt somebody! Now! Badly! More than they can take.!
A first year at Hebijo and a transfer student from Gessen. Ryōna's twin sister and the older of the two. She has a serious complex about her breasts and is the polar opposite of Ryōna. Also contrast to her sister, she's a huge sadist.
Date of Birth: 19th of January
Blood Type: O
Height: 160 cm (5'3")
Measurements: B69 normal / 95 transformed, W56, H90 (27/37-22-35)
Come on. Spank me. Hit me! Call me dirty names, and then ignore me when I cry!
A first year at Hebijo. Ryōbi's twin sister and the oldest of the two. Contrast to her sister, she likes being chastised and scolded, loves showing off her breasts and is a gigantic masochist. She has a freestyle shooting technique mixed with elegant dancing.
Ax-Crazy: She has absolutely no problem with bruising you if you don't bruise her. Not only that, she also has a tendency to unnerve people because of her hardcore masochism. This even makes her sadist sister, Ryōbi, want to avoid her sometimes!
Ryōna: Of course, if you won't hit me OR rub me...then I guess you can die. Yep. I'll need you to die.
Berserk Button: Ryōna will finish you if you know anything about Ryōhime.
Big Breast Pride: Loves to show off her breasts, which are an impressive 98 cm, making her one of the more bustier girls.
Dark and Troubled Past: Shared with Ryoubi. They transferred to Hebijo to exact revenge on Miyabi, who they think was responsible for the death of their big sister, a Gessen teacher, during her mission to kill Miyabi in order stop her from using her power which was feeding yōmas. It was the mission which left Miyabi comatose for years, and during which Rin/Suzune was presumably killed (she was recruited by Miyabi's father).
Serious Business: She will go from a kinky attitude to a serious tone if anyone knows anything about her and Ryōbi's deceased sister, Ryōhime. She disposes of Yozakura when she was on the verge of finding out why they transferred to Hebijo.
Too Kinky to Torture: Well she is a masochist after all. During Katsuragi's substory Katsuragi humors Ryōna and agrees to 'bully' her by groping her breasts, but soon regrets it when Ryōna ends up enjoying it instead of resisting like she expected.
Villains Out Shopping: It may be a hobby of hers, but being Ryōna she's more likely to buy certain items.
Her dictionary doesn't contain the word mercy.
The sensei of Hebijo Academy. Very sexy but cool-headed, her skills as a shinobi are on the highest level. She is very no-nonsense with students. On the other hand, she has no patience for training she regards as reckless, and always looks after her students' safety. For this reason she is considered trustworthy. Hebijo teachers usually deal in sending info and mission briefings to students. Rarely do they conduct actual lessons. She was welcomed to Hebijo by Miyabi's father after her mission with the yōma.
Badass: A rival of Daidouji makes her automatically this.
Face-Heel Turn: She used to attend Hanzou Academy, where she was known as Rin. Like Asuka, she wanted to be a "super ninja" spreading love and peace around the world, and her master, Kiriya, wanted her to succeed. However, on her graduation day, she nearly died from a puppet shooting her, only to be saved from disgrace by Kiriya's intervention. This indulgence on his part backfired after she was declared a shinobi, when she was killed on a dangerous mission... or so the reports said. What really happened was that Hebijou saved her, and she switched her alliance to their cause to follow her own Path of the Shinobi.
Big Bad: For Crimson Girls and possibly Skirting Shadows. In the Hebijo storyline he is explicitly the one responsible for summoning Orochi and assimilating the Hebijo girls to do so, and can be chalked up to being responsible behind Orochi's appearance in the Hanzo storyline as well.
Chekhov's Gunman: He appears very briefly in the Hanzo storyline, without even being named, but every aspect of this scene heavily implies that he's a lot more important than his minor role here is letting on.
Heroic Build: His appearance in the games is never shown, but according to game text he's apparently a tall man with a sculpted physique. He does, however, get an appearance in the anime and Senran Kagura 2 (As shown above).
Hulking Out: Before his boss battle in SK 2, he does this by eating a Yoma fetus when confronted by Rin and Homura.
Killed Mid-Sentence: Is quickly killed by Homura in the Hebijo storyline as he was raving on about how he was going to use Orochi for his own intentions
The shinobi students of the Gessen Girls’ Academy pride themselves on strict discipline and purity of spirit. Their five Elites are all adopted children of the infamous shinobi Kurokage, who fought to purge all evil from the world. Devoted to his dream, these five noble souls wield their light to burn away darkness – by any means necessary.
Knight Templar: Due to their Dark and Troubled Past, they believe all evil shinobi must be destroyed and that any good shinobi who get along with them lose their rights to be called good. This leads to them wanting to have a world with no evil shinobi, their adopted parent's, Kurokage, dream. At least until they actually see in their storyline that not all evil shinobi are downright evil causing them to rethink themselves.
A third year and the leader at Death Cram School. She's the granddaughter of Kurokage, the rival of the legendary ninja Hanzou. As the "snow" in her name would suggest, she has a cool personality. Her parents encountered a ninja and were quickly disposed of, along with the other girls at Death Cram School she was raised by Kurokage. For the purpose of challenging Asuka, the granddaughter of Hanzou who is her grandfather's rival, she takes part in Hanzou's "school festival".Utilizing the movements of her skill in Japanese dancing, she attacks using ice techniques.
Date of Birth: 31st of December
Blood Type: A
Height: 167 cm (5'5")
Measurements: B92, W56, H84 (36-22-33)
Favorite Food: Shaved Ice with red bean flavoring.
Ninja Animal: Spider
VA: Yumi Hara, (Japanese)
An Ice Person: Can generate ultra-sharp ice blades with her powers, and her attacks are able to inflict a 'Frozen' status on her enemies.
Defrosting Ice Queen: While pursuing the signification of Justice during arcade mode, she reaches the conclusion than Justice is Cuteness and decides to dress-up as a Magical Girl (Puri!). Her transformation triggers an Heroic BSOD from her fellow Gessen comrades.
She also loses her Knight Templar attitude after seeing how Imu was ready to risk her life to save an injured Miyabi after Yumi defeated her and then trading blows with Homura who said that she views Asuka as a rival and how they push each other. This all leads to her accepting Asuka and the two of them becoming friends to point where Yumi teases Asuka on her relationship with Homura.
Don't worry. You...You don't have to be nice. I kn-kn-know how I look, all right? I get it!
A third year at Gessen Girls Academy & daughter of the Tairo Corporation CEO. Due to her shy personality, she wears a mask to hide her face. With the mask on, however, she becomes very bloodthirsty. In the event where she isn't wearing her mask, because of her introverted personality and shy nature, she gets very nervous and speaks extremely fast. She will use anything to hider her face (even garbage bags). Her weapons are a large cleaver and spear.Swinging the cleaver downwards very quickly results in an extremely heavy blow.
Huge Schoolgirl: At 172 cm (5'07") tall she is the tallest female playable character so far (not counting New Wave). Slightly taller than even Daidouji, though she happens to look larger as a dramatic effect.
Iconic Item: Her Hannya masknote A Hannya mask is used in Noh theater and Shinto and Buddhist ceremonial dances. They portray the spirits of jealous women and are used to represent the complexity of emotions, which serves as something of an emotional crutch (see Split Personality below). In the New Wave card game, she has an alternate tiger mask that she sometimes carries.
The Un-Smile: Pulls one off after the end of her story mode.
Vocal Dissonance: With her mask off, she speaks in high-pitched and rapid tone. With her mask on, she speaks in a deep, intimidating and serious manner.
The Mighty Matriarch With Massive Mitts
Kicking is for men and girls with no shame. A real lady knows how to use her fists, and look good doing it.
A second year at Gessen Girls Academy. She has a very serious demeanor and isn't very good at understanding jokes. She doesn't approve of twisted things, nor things that get out of hand. When she comes across either of these two things her home dialect/accent unintentionally comes out. On both hands she wields weapons that change size and cover her hands and wrist. Heavy blows are her specialty. She's the oldest of 12 brothers and sisters. With her mother killed during a mission as a shinobi, she had to raise her young siblings by herself. After her father's death a year later, however, Yozakura was separated from her relatives. After escaping, she met with the master black shadow and he told her, "I'll give you the strength to protect what is important to you." She accepted with the condition that she gets to reunite with her brothers and sisters again.
Don't Split Us Up: The oldest of twelve siblings, who was Promoted To Parent after their mother and father were killed in battle. Her desperation to keep her family together led her to become a Shinobi herself.
Oh, right, we're gonna 'fight for our schools,' or honor, or whatever.
A first year at Death Cram School. She speaks like a gal girl and gets into things easily, as well as her ninja friends. She has a lot of playmates. Despite her appearance, she is very studious & IT savvy. Wielding a disc-shaped scythe larger than her body, her attack style is very flashy/gaudy.
Date of Birth: 25th of March
Blood Type: AB
Height: 161 cm (5'4")
Measurements: B95, W54, H83 (37-21-33)
Hobby: Midnight walks
Favorite Food: Tomato Juice.
Ninja Animal: Bat
Weapon: Double-sided Scythe
VA: Ayano Yamamoto, (Japanese)
Badass Bookworm: Shiki has an obsession towards the Heart Sutra. She also insists on reading Mirai's novel after defeating her, and spares her life so she can finish writing it.
Valley Girl: Of the Kogal kind. She is an outgoing and casual girl who is fashionable, wears more makeup than most of the other girls and can be seen chatting on her cellphone quite a bit, so she qualifies. Unlike most examples however she is not dumb. Look at Smarter Than You Look.
Vocal Dissonance: Look at Shiki's face. Those sharp eyes, the Beauty Mark, even her transformation showcasing a Grim Reaper theme, her ninja costume which seems to be made of garterbelts only, none of this would prepare you for the voice she has - it sounds like that of a small child.
The Puerile Pancake Pitching Pipsqueak
Duh! We were playing pretend! Don't you know that when you teach a new game, you always let the newbie win first?
A first year at Death Cram School who is extremely immature despite her age. She loves to play around/enjoy herself and is a simple-minded child. Yozakura diligently tries to discipline/teach her manners. Using a bucket and frying pan her attacks are tricky, it looks as if she's using magic.
Lethal Joke Character: Minori has the lowest stats in SV, making her one of the weakest. Just like Mirai and Hibari though, she has a unique ability that allows her to store a piece of candy in her bucket, rack up some combos and deal serious damage afterward.
Yumi's grandfather as well as Master Hanzo's rival, Black Shadow. He acts as the guardian for Yumi and the other girls and hopes that his "all evil ninja are bad" way of thinking doesn't steer them to the same path he once walked.
Well-Intentioned Extremist: Hell-bent on annihilating all evil ninja after losing his family; begin to re-examine his beliefs toward the end of his life when thinking about what kind of legacy he want to leave to his adopted girls.
Ikaruga's elder brother & a fourth year at a prestigious economy university. He's jealous of his sister's talent, often taking an antagonistic role towards her, despite her many attempts to build a more stable relationship between them. Because of his jealousy, he wants to prove himself to both her and their family.
Beauty Equals Goodness: He was first seen on the anime where in line to his status as antagonist, he has a positively deranged aspect◊. Contrast it with his official render for Deep Crimson◊ where he's a player character and looks really handsome.
Character Development: Shinovi Versus shows him making an active effort to get along with Ikaruga more, to the point where he attended a seminar intended to strengthen sibling bonds.
Harmless Villain: He greatly dislikes Ikaruga for being their family's inheritor of the blade Hien and wants to take it back from her by force, but he's too laughably weak to do anything to her. However Ikaruga still feels conflicted about the situation as she simply just wants to get along with him. She even refers to him as Onii-sama.
Inferiority Superiority Complex: He's quite insecure about how he pales as a shinobi to Ikaruga, and constantly tries to prove himself to be better than she is. He does end up taking comfort with the fact that he can say he's smarter than she is with him graduating a business course in college.
Joke Character: Very much so in Senran Kagura 2. Most of his combos end with him somehow screwing things up
Lethal Joke Character: Surprisingly though, Murasame is actually quite useful as a support character. One example is his heavy aerial attack (head-diving straight down and getting stuck), which has so much Mercy Invincibility, it can be used to avoid some attacks.
The Unfavorite: His family thinks he's good for nothing and not capable of inheriting their heirloom katana Hien. Which was why they adopted Ikaruga who was far more talented, to inherit the blade and succeed the family as a strong shinobi. He is not pleased with this, and tries to take Hien from Ikaruga, believing he is the rightful inheritor of it. Though his efforts are always futile.
A girl that appeared in Kyoto along with Kagura. After being chased by the Yoma, she meets Asuka and her friends. She vows to protect Kagura with her life. She fights by using iron balls on both feet that can expand in size.
Muggles: Is an ordinary highschool boy who is unaware of the fact that Asuka is a Shinobi.
Red Herring: It seemed like Asuka was genuinely interested in him, but in the end she ultimately decided to avoid him completely so that she could focus on becoming a shinobi.
Welcome to the Kagura Thousand-Year Festival, young Shinobi.
The wife of the eponymous Hanzo Academy’s founder and Asuka’s grandmother. Strong enough to put even Hanzo in his place, Sayuri is a tremendously powerful woman who still has a soft spot for her granddaughter. Lately, she’s been traveling around the country alongside the Mikagura sisters as a priestess for the festival. She was also once the target of Kurokage’s affections, over which Hanzo routinely fought him over years and years ago.
Date of Birth: 1st of January
Blood Type: B
Measurements: B75, W60, H69.
Hobbies: Travel and fashion
Favorite Food: Rice cake stuffed with bean jam
Ninja Animal: Toad
VA: Reiko Suzuki (Japanese)
Fountain of Youth: She's able to make her appear younger. Which is contrast to Kagura.
The eldest daughter of the three Mikagura sisters. She has the spirit of a true Tokyoite. While sometimes strong-minded, her sex appeal remains prominent. She dislikes effeminate and cutesy things. If there’s a commotion somewhere, she’s prone to butting in and raising her own brand of hell. No matter how tense a situation gets, though, she has a sense of humor about her and uses her laughter to break across to the other side.
The middle child among the Mikagura sisters, Hanabi acts and speaks just how she thinks. An energetic and athletic girl, she’s not one for subtlety in her thinking, only able to think in a straightforward manner. Asking her any tough questions just might end up making her literally blow up. When it’s all said and done, while she’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, she’s nonetheless self-aware of her actions and feels bad when she does something wrong. She also happens to be well versed in all things pertaining to gunpowder. As for her weapon, she uses a gigantic hammer.
Lame excuses are for babies and if you can’t concentrate well enough, that’s just a sign of how good you really are. I think we know who wins this argument.
Kafuru is the youngest of the Mikagura sisters. A girl with a selfish and calculating streak, she often speaks to others in a condescending manner, riling them up. Whether it’s through her fluent use of Internet slang or clever use of baby talk, her mockery knows no bounds. That being said, she knows better than to try and adopt those same mannerisms with her sisters, though she is known to tease Hanabi from time to time. She has a chest that’s neither big nor particularly small.
Ryōbi and Ryōna’s older sister. She died in a past battle against the yōma, however has been revived in the wake of the “Kagura Thousand-Year Festival.” In addition to her shotgun shield, she also uses her coffin as a weapon. Since she hasn't been completely brought back to life per se, she derives much pleasure from hearing Buddhist sutras being told.
