Special Science Group

The Special Science Group, abbreviated as SSG, is the Marines' science unit division led by Vegapunk. The SSG is responsible for the research and development of advanced technology and weaponry for the World Government, including the Pacifista and the Seraphim, which the Government hoped would be able to replace the Seven Warlords system as one of the Three Great Powers.

The SSG's main base of operation is Egghead, where every member also resides.

"One day, I hope to create my ideal world through science. A world in which energy is abundant, available, and free to everyone around the globe!"
Chapter 1068

A mysterious scientist and a huge figure in the One Piece world. Acclaimed as a genius 500 years ahead of his time, he is the designer of the Pacifista series and various other key inventions. According to Oda, he is also the one person in the series who knows the true nature of Devil Fruits.

His Brain-Brain Fruit (Nomi Nomi no Mi) allows him to retain any and all knowledge he learns without limits, whilst making his brain larger. That ability, coupled with his natural genius, makes him the owner of the largest brain in the world both figuratively and literally; in the past, his cranium was twice as tall as him, and by the present day, his brain has grown to fill the entire upper half of Egghead.

In order to work faster, the original Vegapunk (or "Stella body") divided himself into six individuals, called "Satellites," all of whom represent key aspects of his personality. Together, these seven comprise the Navy's SSG (Special Science Group) and operate the labs on the futuristic science hub Egghead. His main original brain is stored in a safe location called "Punk Records" on the upper tier of Egghead's Labophase, linked to him via antenna and syncing with his other selves daily.

Tropes pertaining all of the "Vegapunks" (the Stella Vegapunk and all six Satellites)

"Each one of them is an expert in one of my necessary facets. All six of them together possess one complete copy of my personality. But they can do six times as much!"
Chapter 1067

  • All Your Powers Combined: Played with. Vegapunk created six individuals based on himself to not only increase overall productivity, but each one having a unique personality would allow them all to gain unique knowledge based on their different experiences that could later be added to Punk Records.
  • Ambiguously Human: While the Vegapunks are all sentient and capable of acting independently of one another, the exact nature of their bodies isn't clear since the Satellites have such different bodies. Lilith and York look like regular humans while Edison and Pythagoras seem entirely robotic. Atlas, while looking humanoid, is clearly more robotic as she's able to be repaired after Lucci destroys her. However the fact that they still need York to provide for their biological needs, and the fact that she is capable of eating and using the toilet, does show that they're not entirely robotic either. Shaka, for his part, seems to be one of the more humanoid Punks since he visibly bleeds when York disposes of him.
  • Bottomless Bladder: Justified. The Satellites from 01 to 05 are too busy coming up with inventions to perform basic needs like sleeping, eating or going to the toilet, so it's York's job to do everything for them.
  • Brain Uploading: Vegapunk explains that all the memories of the Satellites are uploaded to his Giant Brain and synchronized daily.
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": Each Satellite is associated with a specific "Kanji" that describes their personality:
    • Punk 01: "正" which means "logical/precise" but also "good/righteous"
    • Punk 02: "悪" which means "evil/flaw"
    • Punk 03: "想" which means "conception/idea"
    • Punk 04: "知" which means "wisdom/analysis"
    • Punk 05: "暴" which means "violence/outrage"
    • Punk 06: "欲" which means "greed/craving"
  • Copied the Morals, Too: Played with in regards to the Satellites. They were each created to embody a specific aspect of the original Stella's personality, but they're still based on his personality. Atlas is based on the Stella's "violent" side, but since Vegapunk himself is not a violent person, Atlas is not especially violent despite being somewhat short-tempered and prone to outbursts, and she even manages to get along quite well with characters like Chopper. Likewise, Lilith is based on the Stella's "evil" side, but while her morality is a couple notches below the others, she doesn't do anything especially evil and even cares quite a bit about her fellow Vegapunks. Justified, since again Vegapunk himself is not an evil person. York is based on Vegapunk's "greedy" side and she is a very greedy person, even betraying the other Vegapunks to live out a hedonistic life as a Celestial Dragon. Justified, since Vegapunk is constantly running short on funds for his projects, and the resulting desire for more money is reflected in York's greedy nature.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Neither the main Vegapunk nor York expected S-Snake could override her programming thanks to a crush on Luffy that she inherited from Boa Hancock. Vegapunk is surprised to find out that the Lineage Factor even includes feelings.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Despite working for the World Government and having experimented on living people, Vegapunk dismissed Caesar because he was disgusted by Caesar's experiments and how dangerous they can be towards innocent civilians.
    • Dragon and Ivankov note that while he's OK with buildings weapons for the World Government, he'd never build an obvious tool of mass murder like the one that wiped out Lulusia.
    • Vegapunk might've been enthusiastic about the Pacifista program, but he was absolutely furious when Saturn demanded Kuma undergo the process as well and surrender his free will in the process. He only relented on his protests when Kuma willingly agreed to the conditions so Bonney's life could be saved. Chapter 1102 reveals that despite Kuma accepting the Deal with the Devil wholeheartedly, he would continue to argue against Saturn and would try to convince the Elder to allow Kuma to keep even a sliver of his humanity and is disgusted at being ordered to install a Self-Destruct Mechanism onto him.
Vegapunk: Removing the human will from a cyborg just turns it into a simple robot!!! Are you asking me to kill this man?!! [...] This is murder, plain and simple!! To perform such an operation would violate all human morality, and-
    • Like many, many, many others, he is outright disgusted by the Celestial Dragons, expressing horror at the fact that York wants to become one.
    • One possibility that was too horrible for him to stomach was the idea of the Pacifistas resembling Kuma being used against Kuma's daughter Bonney. So he secretly programmed all of the Kuma-based Pacifistas to obey Bonney above all others, even the Five Elders, despite understanding this would be considered high treason.
  • Evil Genius: Before his debut, it's not clear whether he's truly evil or not, he's the World's most brilliant scientist and did many questionable things, like vivisecting prisoners or turning Kuma into a living weapon for the World Government (it turns out Saturn forced the latter on him). In his introduction, Vegapunk himself appears to be a benevolent person who just wants to share scientific progress with the world, but he created an evil version of himself who does fit the trope.
  • For Science!: Vegapunk has an interest in every branch of science and spends a lot of time inventing machines. His island is full of groundbreaking inventions including an air conditioning system for the whole island. When Jimbe points out the flaw that comes with everyone sharing their knowledge, including conflicting ideologies, as one mind the original Vegapunk agrees but thinks science wouldn't progress if he lets concerns like that stop him.
  • Frame-Up: In his past, he was set up by rival scientist Caesar Clown to take the fall for the Punk Hazard incident. He publicly took responsibility so that the world government could investigate and arrest Caesar.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: Vegapunk made six copies of himself, each sharing a part of his personalities. Despite the original Vegapunk being male, half of the copies are female, while the other half are male.
  • The Ghost: He is mentioned several times at major plot points and by numerous characters and his inventions appear throughout the story, but he never appears in person, save for his silhouette in Caesar Clown's flashback. Some of his personalities appear at the beginning of the Egghead arc, but the real Vegapunk is revealed only after all his other selves appeared.
  • He Knows Too Much: Due to carrying on the Oharan's research of the Void Century, the Five Elders mark all the Vegapunks for death.
  • Inventional Wisdom: While Vegapunk has an understandable reason for making the Satellites, one has to wonder why he even bothers making the ones based on negative emotions such as 'Evil', 'Violent' and 'Greedy'. Especially since the Greedy one turns against the rest.
  • Keeper of Forbidden Knowledge: He is aware of the existence of a technologically advanced ancient kingdom 900 years ago and most of his inventions are in fact directly derived from his research of said kingdom — the very same kingdom that caused the destruction of Ohara for confirming its existence. And he has been using that research to make weapons for (and get funding from) the very same World Government that punishes even the mention of it not just with death but erasure from history.
  • Literal Split Personality: Since a single human life isn't enough to complete all of his ideas, Vegapunk created six versions of himself, each of them representing a part of his personality.
  • Men Are Better Than Women: Shaka is a good-natured and reasonable man, and both Edison and Pythagoras are just goofy-looking guys fixated on their research. The female half of the Satellites, on the other hand, embody Vegapunk's impulses for violence, greed and sloth. While Atlas is merely hot-headed and the "Evil" Lilith is shown to be a good person deep down, York outright wants to join the Celestial Dragons to satisfy her hedonist desires.
  • Mr. Exposition: They provide a lot of explanations to the Straw-Hats (and the readers) about Egghead, the Seraphim and the origin of devil fruits.
    • Shaka informs the Straw-Hats of the "lost kingdom" first mentioned by professor Clover on Ohara, and the one who briefs them on what happened after the Ohara Buster Call, including the fact that Jaguar D. Saul survived and the will of Ohara still lives.
    • Lilith informs Zoro and Robin about Egghead Island climate features.
    • Atlas introduces to Luffy & friends to the titular island and explains the purpose of the island's weather, the functionality of her "Light-Pressure" gloves on holograms, and Vegapunk's inability to mass-produce his inventions thanks to a lack of available technology and funding.
    • Edison and Pythagoras inform the audience about the "Satellites" work food-wise.
    • The original Vegapunk informs the Straw-Hats about the nature of the Devil-Fruits and how the Seraphim function.
    • York explains to the audience about her Evil Plan, how she tricked the other Vegapunks and the Straw Hats, and her connection to the Five Elders.
  • Mr. Vice Guy: Vegapunk is a good person and put his great mind to use but his greed leads to a lot of bad decisions or him arming the wrong faction.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: He's been stated to study everything, from battleships to human cells. He seems to be especially well versed in technology and Devil Fruits; hell, he knows what Devil Fruits really are, something no one else in the world can apparently lay claim to.
  • One-Man Industrial Revolution: Vegapunk is described as so smart that he's 500 years ahead of the world's current technology. Gets deconstructed in the Egghead arc though since he's so smart that almost no other scientists are capable of keeping up with him and the few that did (Caesar Clown, Vinsmoke Judge, and Queen) are far away, nor is there any existing infrastructure capable of manufacturing and mass-producing his inventions, forcing him to make them from scratch. He needs to split himself into six personalities to make the inventions he wants.
  • Opposite-Sex Clone: While the original Vegapunk is a man, half of the Satellites are female.
  • Organization with Unlimited Funding: Averted. Despite working for the World Government, they don't give him the budget to mass produce most of his machines, and even if they did, there aren't enough qualified engineers to assist him. However, in the past he cited funding as the reason he wouldn't join up with Dragon's Freedom Fighters group, noting that despite his vast intellect, there was only so much he could do on the side of such an impoverished military force, and since the World Government was a massive global organization, there were many reasonable people within it who could work towards their shared end goal. Since this was coming on the heels of the destruction of Ohara, it's implied to be the main reason Vegapunk continued working with them afterwards, despite his clear disgust of how they obliterated and besmirched the names of the scholars of Ohara, including his good friend Clover, and the shadiness of some of the projects they had him create, like Kuma's Unwilling Robotization (which only happened because Saturn amended the deal) and the Seraphim. Of course, once the World Government decides Vegapunk has proven too much of a risk and tries to have him and his Satellites eliminated, his concerns for funding go out the window and he (and most of his Satellites sans York) are more than gladly willing to side with Luffy's Straw Hat Grand Fleet almost immediately as things go downhill.
  • Powers as Programs: Dr. Vegapunk's understanding of Devil Fruits allows him to infuse them into inanimate objects, and even duplicate them, as shown in the Artificial Devil Fruits and Seraphim series. He could even duplicate Mythical Zoan Fruits near-perfectly, though he admits that Logia have proven too tricky to duplicate.
  • Psychic Link: The original (Stella) Vegapunk and the Satellites are all connected to the same brain by psychic waves and their memories are synchronized daily. They're also somehow connected by their biological needs of sleeping, eating and using the toilet, all of which are done by York.
  • Punny Name: In Japanese, the word for "brain" or "brain tissue" is nomiso, so following the naming conventions for Devil Fruits, Vegapunk's fruit is the "Nomi Nomi no Mi." The Stella Vegapunk gets Tongue-Tied trying to pronounce it. The pun is Lost in Translation in English, though the joke about Vegapunk being unable to say it remains—try saying "Brain-Brain Fruit" three times fast.
  • Reluctant Mad Scientist: Vegapunk is a good man who desires to help the world, but the only organization in the world who can give him enough funding for his research is the World Government. Thus he works with them despite their actions contradicting his morals. As a result, a great many of Vegapunk's inventions have been misused by his bosses for evil purposes, up to and including the Mother Flame, a Weapon of Mass Destruction.
  • Robot Me: Edison and Pythagoras are robots that represent each a part of Vegapunk, respectively the inventive and the wise side, and present themselves as Vegapunk.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Played with. Before his debut, Vegapunk is always described as an old man, but the first character to present themselves as "Dr. Vegapunk" in the story is a young woman. It turns out that the original Vegapunk is an old man but he created multiple personalities of himself, three of which are female in nature.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Information about Vegapunk is given through flashbacks or word of mouth a few times over hundreds of chapters, every time telling or showing that he's a legendary genius in every scientific field, but remains a mysterious figure until his debut at the beginning of the Egghead Arc.
  • Synchronization: While each Satellite has a distinct personality, they are all linked together. Not only can they communicate telepathically to each other, but all Satellites gain satiety and satisfaction from York doing all their biological duties for them.
  • Theme Naming: The "Satellites," fittingly, are all named after asteroids orbiting around the solar system. The fact that the main body is named "Stella" (as in "Star") indicates that this is intentional.
  • They Called Me Mad!: Through Atlas, he expresses frustration that he could never get funding to mass-produce many of his more benign inventions like holograms and food printers.
  • Unseen No More: Vegapunk is first mentioned at the end of the Water 7-Enies Lobby Arc, in chapter 433, and gets mentioned multiple times over the course of the story, with some character having met him in the past. However, he makes his first appearance in the Egghead Arc, more than 600 chapters since his first mention.
  • Walking Spoiler: Any mention of Vegapunk once he appears in the Egghead Arc very quickly reveals that he split himself into six different versions, all of whom represent different aspects of his personality.
  • World's Smartest Man: He's a genius amongst geniuses, a scientist so peerless that he's centuries ahead of his time, and the Satellites are just as brilliant as the main body.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Despite the fact that the Vegapunks have created the Seraphim which are literal child soldiers, they don't subject them to tests that they aren't ready for, like testing laser beams at them.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Played with. According to Cipher Pol's Rob Lucci, they are the world's "most useful man". However extraordinary circumstances make his elimination necessary despite him being so useful. So Cipher Pol is sent to kill him and the Satellites while taking extra care not to damage his scientific findings. So it's more of a case of Vegapunk outweighing his usefulness rather than outliving it. It's further played with in that the Five Elders are fine with letting York live as long as she can supply them with the Mother Flame.

The original body of Dr. Vegapunk.

  • Absent-Minded Professor: While he is still the world's smartest person, the first thing he does after his debut is to accidentally mishandle everyone’s Rocket Boots and launch Luffy and company to the sky, much to Luffy's delight and everybody else's horror.
  • Always Someone Better: Vegapunk's former colleagues in MADS are all brilliant scientists in their own right who could have changed the course of history with their research. Unfortunately for them, Vegapunk is living in the same age as them, so they're remembered as "those dudes who aren't as smart as Vegapunk," which they're all very bitter about. Judge and Caesar Clown team up again after the events of Whole Cake Island because they both envy Vegapunk that much.
  • Ambiguously Evil:
    • Vegapunk works for the corrupted World Government and is said to have done many questionable things, including vivisecting prisoners. The Seraphim he creates are sentient children used by the Navy as weapons—effectively child soldiers.
    • However, he is beloved in his hometown, where he is known for making inventions to help the inhabitants, he kicked Caesar Clown out of the government science squad for unethical behavior and agreed with installing in Kuma the one mission to protect the Thousand Sunny, a pirate ship, and hid first inventions aimed to help his home island.
    • One of his personalities is labeled as "Good", indicating that he does have good side (or at least good relative to the others). At the same time, however, another of his personalities is labeled as "Evil" indicating that the real Vegapunk is somewhere in the middle.
    • His acquaintance with Dragon, especially their conversation at the Ohara ruins, suggests that, at the end of the day, he's a good person and simply seeks to change things for the better his own way, while his allegiance to the World Government is to get the resources he needs, but he's not very loyal to it.
    • When it comes down to it, Lilith (his "Evil" side) isn't actually all that evil compared to any of the actual antagonists. Labeling her as "evil" may be a result of his perfectionism applied to what he sees as his own personal flaws.
  • Bad Liar: When Bonney is interrogating him about why he killed Kuma, she notices a door which Vegapunk frantically says has nothing to do with Kuma. Said door has an outline of Kuma's paw print emblazoned on the front.
  • Best Friend: Kuma. Even though he has other acquintances, Kuma is the only one shown having personal conversations with him. The two had gotten so close in fact, that when Vegapunk eventually wipes out Kuma's personality, he slumps down defeated and cries out in agony.
  • Broken Tears: He cries when he pulls down the switch that erases Kuma’s personality, as he proceeds to slouch down, completely destroyed by the fact that he had to kill his best friend.
  • Casting Gag: Yohei Tadano is perhaps best-known as the JP dub voices of fellow Mad Scientists Rick Sanchez and Heinz Doofenschmirtz.
  • Crazy-Prepared: As Vegapunk is aware that his works and inventions can be horribly misused by the World Government, so he takes precautions (much to Saint Saturn's chagrin).
    • He knows that if he puts a conventional bomb-based Self-Destruct Mechanism within Kuma, it will be inevitably be used by the World Government to hurt people. Plus, turning Kuma's body into a bomb would be the ultimate desecration of his friend's legacy, since Kuma was a Martial Pacifist. Which is why he opts to make the mechanism a shutdown-switch instead.
    • When he finds out Bonney is a pirate, he acknowledges the possibility that in the future Bonney can be killed by the very image of her loving father, Kuma, who gave up his very life to save her, thereby making his selfless sacrifice completely pointless. Wanting to avert such a horrible tragedy from happening, he grants Bonney the highest possible authority in the Kuma-shaped Pacifistas, allowing her to override even Saint Saturn's orders.
Vegapunk: Even if the entire world should be your enemy... Understand this Bonney...Kuma will always be on your side.
    • It turns out that Vegapunk was well aware he may eventually be killed by the World Government...so he set up a Dead Man's Switch to broadcast a prerecorded video exposing 'the truth of the world' to the entire planet.
  • Create Your Own Villain: He created his six satellites, one of which, York, who represents his greedy side, betrays him to become a Celestial Dragon and is the main instigator of the Egghead Incident.
  • Dead Man's Switch: As Vegapunk dies in Sanji's arms, a beeping is heard. A room is then shown with an EKG monitor (which is flatlining) and a monitor playing a video of Vegapunk begins broadcasting to the entire world. In the video, Vegapunk asks everyone to bear with him, and declares what he's about to tell them is "the truth of the world".
  • Didn't See That Coming: His 10-minute delay before starting the broadcast of "the truth of the world" was meant to be a way to let everyone see it. However, he was seemingly unaware of Saturn's ability to summon the other Elders, which leads to all five of them assaulting Egghead in order to stop the truth from being revealed, with the clear implication that they might be able to stop the broadcast before it begins.
  • Didn't Think This Through: He split himself up into six satellites so he could do more work. However, it never occurred to him that one of his satellites, who represent specific parts of his personality, might betray him. York, who represents his greedy side, does just that, killing off two of his other satellites directly or indirectly, and ratting him out to the Government in an effort to become a Celestial Dragon.
  • Distressed Dude: He's kidnapped by York and stored in an underground bunker alongside the kidnapped Cipher Pol agents.
  • Einstein Hair: Being based off Albert Einstein, Vegapunk has spiky hair that denotes his intelligence and eccentricity.
  • Good All Along: Vegapunk's reputation shrouds him as Ambiguously Evil due to the creations of the Pacifistas and Seraphim. However, the Egghead Arc shows that, while he's absentminded and willingly worked for the World Government of his own choice, he's a good man at heart and genuinely wants to use his genius for good for the world.
  • Gonk: Before creating his counterparts, Vegapunk had a humongous head because of his devil fruit, his tongue is long and floppy, and in silhouette he looks like a bowling pin with a tiny apple on top, making him one of the most unique designs in the series.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Sanji notes that Vegapunk is smiling as he expires in his arms, content as his Dead Man's Switch activates and delivers his final act of rebellion against the World Government.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: After the revelation that he programmed Bonney as the highest authority over all Kuma-based Pacifista, Saturn impales Vegapunk with his spider-leg.
  • Internal Reformist: Whereas Dragon created his Revolutionary Army to force change into the world violently from without, Vegapunk chose to work directly with the government, in belief that it too is full of good people worth helping out. After two decades of cooperation, Vegapunk's aim and ideals clash too much with the World Government's, which sends CP0 to eliminate him.
  • In the Back: He gets pierced in the back by one of Saint Saturn's talons in a fit of rage when it turns out he had granted Bonney supreme authority over all Kuma-shaped Pacifistas.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Saint Saturn forces him to completely erase Kuma’s personality, Kuma being his best friend (if not his only true friend) and someone he deeply grew to care about. Saint Saturn also completely dismisses his pleas to at least install a Flip Personality switch on Kuma, further informing him that he is also a scientist and will know if Vegapunk tries to do something behind his back. In the end, Vegapunk is forced to erase Kuma’s personality completely breaking down in tears as he does so.
  • Knee Fold Fall of Defeat: He doesn't fall in battle but he falls to his knees in defeat when he is forced to wipe Kuma's personality and when Egghead gets destroyed by a Buster Call. Both instances directly caused by Saint Saturn.
  • Loophole Abuse: He gets ordered by Saint Saturn to install a Self-Destruct Mechanism within Kuma's body, but Saturn doesn't specify what sort of mechanism he wants installed. Not wanting to desecrate Kuma's body by turning it into a bomb, he installs a kill-switch instead which merely shuts down Kuma's systems and prevents him from receiving any further orders.
  • Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: As benevolent as he has seemingly proven to be during the Egghead Arc, Vegapunk does not seem to realize that creating the Mother Flame, something that can be at least used as a floating superweapon capable of completely destroying whole islands in one shot, for the World Government might not be the best idea. Granted, when the idea comes up that Vegapunk created said superweapon neither Dragon nor Ivankov believe that the man did this intentionally (and firmly refuse to do so), and the good doctor has revealed himself to be an Absent-Minded Professor whose benevolent inventions are often perverted by the World Government (Saint Saturn specifically), which implies that said destructive properties might not be the intended use for the Mother Flame. However, said point becomes utterly moot when one considers the complete destruction of the Lulusia Kingdom under the orders of Imu by using the Mother Flame.
  • My Brain Is Big: As befit of the greatest scientist in the world, his head in the past was absolutely enormous — as a side-effect of the Devil Fruit he ate. In the present day he's cut it off and replaced it with the top of an apple-like hat, which is an antenna that connects to the rest of it. He explains that his brain has become even bigger, becoming the upper part of Egghead, but is no longer connected to him physically.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: He's pretty blatantly the world of One Piece's version of Albert Einstein. On top of physically reassembling a caricature of the famous photo of Einstein sticking his tongue out, Vegapunk also has his distinct Einstein Hair and the reputation of being the World's Smartest Man.
  • No Social Skills:
  • Odd Friendship: Him and Bartholomew Kuma couldn't be any more different and yet the two hit it off almost immediately when they first meet in Egghead.
  • Oh, Crap!: Vegapunk is completely dumbfounded when he watches York, a facet of himself, shoot Shaka down and proclaim that she wants to become a Celestial Dragon of all things.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Vegapunk is usually a peppy and cheerful, if somewhat quirky scientist but after activating the machine that erases Kuma’s personality, he slouches down and screams, completely broken and devastated by Kuma’s loss, showing how close the two have gotten in what little time they spent together.
  • Out-Gambitted: Fitting his status as the World's Smartest Man, Vegapunk outsmarts the World Government on several occasions.
    • Vegapunk saw Saturn trying to use a self-destruct in Kuma as a weapon coming, so he used Exact Words to make it a shutdown instead of a bomb.
    • Knowing the Pacifistas would likely be used against Bonney one day, Vegapunk programmed them to obey her above literally everyone else, the Five Elders and himself included.
    • He knew from the start eventually the World Government would kill him for one of the many things he'd done they wouldn't approve of, so he set up a Dead Man's Switch to trigger if he flatlined. This triggers a broadcast of 'the truth of the world' to the entire planet, something the World Government was willing to wipe out entire kingdoms to a man at the slightest hint it might be revealed. As such, in killing him for researching the Void Century, the World Government would only expose the truth they were trying to cover up.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: A prominent part of his design is a very long tongue that constantly sticks out, acting as an homage to the most famous photo of Albert Einstein. Notably, unlike his head, this doesn't appear to be connected to his Devil Fruit in any capacity and is simply a quirk of his biology, adding to his eccentric design.
  • The Perfectionist: Vegapunk considers his attempt to recreate Kaido's Devil Fruit a complete failure simply because the resulting dragon transformation was colored pink instead of blue.
  • Secret-Keeper: Vegapunk is the only living individual who knows why Bartholomew Kuma decided to go through with becoming an android—information which neither Kuma's friends in the revolutionaries nor even his own daughter Jewelry Bonney ever found out about. Kuma very much wanted his reasons to remain a secret, having Vegapunk specifically promise to never tell Bonney his reasons.
  • Shoot the Dog: Although he's understandably very stingy on giving out details about it, Vegapunk really didn't want to kill his friend Kuma and only did so at the latter's insistence.
  • Signature Laugh: His laugh is "Pe pe pe peh!"
  • Super-Intelligence: While he was already smart on his own, Vegapunk ate the Brain Brain fruit, which let him remember everything he learns. As a side effect, his brain becomes abnormally huge.
  • Thanatos Gambit: Knowing his life could end, Vegapunk prepared for a final transmission in the event of his death to reveal the truth of the world to everyone all over.
  • Token Good Teammate: Although it is implied that he took part in some rather unsavory activities due to being the World Government's leading scientist, Vegapunk is a good person at heart and wants to create a better world for humanity, while each of his former colleagues in MADS (Caesar, Queen, and Judge) represent a different archetype of evil scientist and, when they worked together, the aforementioned three were all baffled by Vegapunk's peaceful ideas like a flower that blooms in gunpowder.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: By creating the Mother Flame, Vegapunk basically made something that Imu intends to use to erase any kingdom in the world that is a threat to the Government. The Lulusia Kingdom was destroyed by the Mother Flame thanks to Vegapunk making the device. Granted, there is the implication that this was Not the Intended Use for the weapon, and it was York that sent it to the Five Elders, but it still counts, since Vegapunk made the weapon.
  • Verbal Tic: He tends to say "Re-Quasar" instead of "Request". This is how Bonney identifies him as the Vegapunk as opposed to another satellite.
  • Video Wills: As Vegapunk comes very close to dying, a prerecorded message of his starts playing throughout Egghead automatically, preparing to reveal "the truth of this world".
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: His response to Kuma's question if his life was a "nuisance" is that he was a good person who will be missed by everyone.
Vegapunk: Your death will be a nuisance… To every person who has ever known and loved you. Listen to me Kuma and listen good. You are a hero!!! To Bonney!!! And to us all!!!

"If I told you that Egghead wasn't the only one, that there was once a kingdom as highly advanced as this that actually existed 900 years ago, would you believe me?"
Chapter 1065

One of Vegapunk's personalities, who represents Vegapunk's logical and calculating part.

  • Boom, Headshot!: Gets shot in the head by York just as he finds where Stella-Vegapunk is being kept prisoner.
  • Cool Helmet: He wears a cool and futuristic Daft Punk-like helmet over his head and is never seen without it.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He magnetizes the boots the Straw Hats put on earlier in order to stick them to the floor, admitting that it would be foolish to grant them free reign before they earn his trust.
  • Expendable Clone: He sees himself as less valuable than the original Vegapunk, saying that the Satellites are there to ensure the Stella escapes safely even if it means their own deaths. Tragically, not only does he die, but the Stella doesn't survive either.
  • Foreseeing My Death: He confides to Dragon that he has deduced through observation, deduction and analysis that he will die soon. Dragon dismisses his concerns, unaware that the World Government has marked him, the original Vegapunk and the rest of the Satellites for immediate termination via assassination.
  • Meaningful Name: He takes his name from Shaka Nyorai, the Japanese name for Gautama Buddha — fitting for someone meant to represent Vegapunk's moral side. Additionally, to fit with the asteroid Theme Naming, he also could have taken his name from 1246 Chaka, an asteroid named after the Zulu king Shaka.
  • Mission Control: Given that he's the most objective and logical out of all the Vegapunks, he's the one who gives orders to the others, which they (minus Lilith) generally follow.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: His design is a pretty clear Shout-Out to Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one of the two members of Daft Punk.
  • Oh, Crap!: Shaka gets visibly worried when Atlas attacks CP0. He yells at her to stand down, but unfortunately she doesn't listen.
  • Properly Paranoid: His conversation with Dragon shows he is aware that He Knows Too Much and that he will soon outlive his usefulness to the World Government, who will promptly arrange for his death when this happens. He is right on all counts. Curiously enough, he is the only Satellite that feels this way.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Being the cool-headed embodiment of Vegapunk's logic, Shaka is the blue oni to Lilith's red oni, who is the embodiment of Vegapunk's evil and chaotic side instead. Lilith very frequently gets pissed at him for being a "do-gooder" but Shaka always shrugs it off.
  • The Spock: He is introduced as the one who represents the purely logical part of Dr. Vegapunk's mind.
  • Spock Speak: Averted. Despite being the purely logical part, he speaks relatively normal compared to Lilith.
  • Token Good Teammate: He is labelled as the "Good" part of Vegapunk's personality in the Viz translation. He calls off S-Shark from attacking the Straw Hats, and is also the one interacting most normally with them. Most tellingly, he is the part of Vegapunk that mostly interacts with Dragon and opposes the World Government.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vegapunk_lilith_anime.png

" I'm obviously not the Stella. That's the main body. I am Punk-02! Vegapunk Lilith, the Evil!"
Chapter 1062

The "Evil" part of Dr. Vegapunk's personality. She spends a big part of her time pillaging passing ships in order to gain funds for Dr. Vegapunk's research.

  • Affably Evil: She actually gets along pretty well with the crew after she allies with them.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: All of her screen-time with Shaka consists of her yelling at him and getting ignored, but she's broken up over his death, just like Pythagoras's.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: She is the "evil" part of Dr. Vegapunk and the second most likely (after York) to go out of her way to hurt people. In the case of the Straw Hats, she first did this by attempting to capture them and then by manipulating them into fighting S-Shark.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: While she's the embodiment of Vegapunk's evil side, she's genuinely cares about her fellow Vegapunks and, during the fight with the Seraphim, she's genuinely worried about Edison. However, said trait is not shared by all Vegapunks.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite being based on the darker parts of Vegapunk's personality, and being more than willing to hurt people or work with the World Government, she's clearly insulted by the idea that the Vegapunks were behind the disappearances of the Cipher Pols sent to investigate Egghead, and is clearly angry and hurt when she learns that York betrayed the other Vegapunks, and got Pythagoras and Shaka killed out of sheer greed.
  • Evil Genius: Invoked. She's based on the evil part of Vegapunk's personality and is just as brilliant as the original. She has no issues with assaulting pirates and stealing their ships.
  • Future Spandex: Fitting with the futuristic aesthetic of Egghead, she wears a skin-tight bodysuit.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She goes from calm to extremely angry with minimal provocation. For example, in chapter 1068, she flips out at CP-0 over the accusations of raiding Cipher Pol ships.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: She has part of her hair that cover her right eye as a visual hint to her deceiving and mean nature.
  • Loveable Rogue: She's bad-tempered and rude, but is still one of the Straw Hats' allies during the Egghead arc.
  • Meaningful Name: In Jewish mythology Lilith is the progenitor of demons. In astronomy, apart from being an asteroid, Lilith is also the dark moon, which presents many challenges to astronomers in its observation and interpretation. Hence, she represents Vegapunk's darkest and most hidden "evil" impulses.
  • Oh, Crap!: She has a completely scared expression when it dawns on her, after Shaka's explanation, that she is in a position where Nico Robin and Zoro can end her in an instant.
  • Red Herring: She introduces herself as "Dr Vegapunk" in her debut, Chapter 1061, setting the audience up for a Samus Is a Girl type of reveal. While this is technically the truth, it's a half truth and, in the very next chapter, it's revealed she is indeed Vegapunk, but part of his Literal Split Personality.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Being the embodiment of the evil and chaotic part of Vegapunk's personality, Lilith is the red oni to Shaka's blue oni, the embodiment of Vegapunk's good and logical side. Whereas Lilith flips out over the slightest provocation, Shaka always remains perfectly logical. As you might expect, this causes them to frequently butt heads.
  • Salvage Pirates: She saves the Straw Hats from the mecha shark only for the sake of looting the Thousand Sunny.
  • Spock Speak: In the Viz translation, she speaks using extremely technical words. In the Japanese original she speaks like an old-man.
  • Tears of Joy: While fending off the Seraphim, Lilith briefly thinks that Edison was destroyed by a Seraphim, and is greatly relieved, with a tear falling off her eye, when it turns out Sanji saved him at the last moment.
  • Token Evil Teammate: She represents the evil part of Vegapunk's personality. It's notable that many of the other Vegapunks are put off by her viciousness at times, and most tellingly, she's the part of Vegapunk most willing to cooperate with the World Government. But unlike York, she's not evil enough to betray her fellow Vegapunks.
  • Treacherous Quest Giver: She tricks Usopp, Franky, Nami, Sanji, and Robin into following her on Egghead, at which point she ditches them and sics S-Shark on them. Trusting someone called Lilith the Evil may not be the crew's brightest moment.
  • Underestimating Badassery: As Shaka calmly explains to her, getting out of her Humongous Mecha and announcing herself as "Dr. Vegapunk" to the pirates she plans to plunder is never a good idea, especially when there are individuals like Zoro and Nico Robin who can swiftly kill her from a distance.
  • Villainous Rescue: When the Straw Hats arrive at Egghead, in chapter 1061, she saves the Thousand-Sunny from a giant Cyborg-Shark with a Humongous Mecha. And then she states her name and affiliation with the World Government, mentions that they were the one who created the Cyborg-Shark and clarifies that she is not here to save the Straw-Hats.

"Eureka! I've just thought of a new invention!"
Chapter 1065

A robot who represents Dr Vegapunk's inventive side. He is constantly thinking up new ideas for invention to the point that he doesn't have time for basic human needs.

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Edison is brilliant at coming up with ideas, but not so good at following them up. But that's why he outsources the data collection to Pythagoras.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Played with. Edison and Pythagoras are the only visually robotic Satellites and work together to come up with most of the inventions. In contrast, Edison is tiny while Pythagoras appears to be big, but he's actually even smaller than Edison and is just piloting a robotic body.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The kanji on Edison's jacket ("想") translates to "Concept/Idea".
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Being the inventive side of Vegapunk, Edison often thinks up of solutions to solve a particular problem or defective invention.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He may have been okay with tricking the Straw Hats into fighting S-Shark, but even he's put off by Lilith's comment about tearing their heads off.
  • Meaningful Name: Apart from being an asteroid, Edison is the surname of the famous inventor Thomas Edison, who, at the time of his death had over 1000 inventions patented to his name. Similarly, Edison is constantly thinking about new inventions to make and represents Vegapunk's inventive side.
  • Oh, Crap!: He and Lilith freak out when Franky uses his Radical Beam on S-Shark.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Edison is the Red Oni to Pythagoras' Blue Oni. The former embodies Vegapunk's energetic creativity while the latter embodies his more cautious wisdom.

"You don't get fascinating battle data like this every day! This is a once-in-a-lifetime input!"
Chapter 1065

A robot who represents Vegapunk's wise side, and works alongside Edison by looking over the raw data collected for their experiments.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: He manages to deduce that CP-0 used S-Bear's ability to escape from the sea beasts.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Played with. Edison and Pythagoras are the only visually robotical Satellites and work together to come up with most of the inventions. In contrast, Edison is tiny while Pythagoras appears to be big, but he's actually even smaller than Edison and is just piloting a robotic body.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Pytagoras has a kanji on his robot ("知") which translates to "Wisdom".
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: Is crushed by S-Snake while he frantically asks who ordered her to attack them.
  • Meaningful Name: Pythagoras is Vegapunk's wise side and, apart from being an Asteroid, it's also the name of the renowned ancient Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras, of "Pythagorean Theorem" fame (it was known centuries before him, but he was the first one who actually analyzed and explained it rationally), who also discovered "Irrational Numbers" (eg square root of two) through simple analysis of said theorem.
  • Mobile-Suit Human: Downplayed. While it doesn't look human, Pythagoras' body is actually a human-sized mecha that is piloted by his head, which is his true body.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Pythagoras is the Blue Oni to Edison's Red. The latter embodies Vegapunk's energetic creativity while the former embodies his more cautious wisdom.
  • Shout-Out: His design is based on the titular hero of the Japanese show Ganbare!! Robocon.
  • Waddling Head: Pythagoras' true body is actually only his head with four tiny limbs, while his large body is a mechanical one that he pilots.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Compared to the other satellites, Pythagoras isn't given that much characterization before he's unceremoniously killed mid-battle, his death more serving to underline the seriousness of the situation.

Debut: Chapter 1062 (Manga)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vegapunk_atlas_anime.png

"Spend a little more money, and we could control the weather! The world doesn't have enough tech! Or funding!"
Chapter 1062

A giant girl who represents Dr Vegapunk's angry and violent side. She finds Luffy, Chopper, Jewelry Bonney and Jimbei during the Egghead Arc and guides them.

  • Cute Giant: She looks like an adorable child, and Chopper notes that she's about as big as Kaido.
  • Gentle Giant: She is quite big in relation to Luffy's size (Chopper says she's as big as Kaido) and she is quite pleasant to him and his friends. She even seems friendly when she approaches them... and then Luffy punches her.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Since she's the personification of Dr Vegapunk's violent side, it doesn't take much to get her started.
  • Hologram: Atlas's research involves making living holograms or projections of large objects. With some special gloves, she can interact with them.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: She has the unfortunate tendency to jump into battle, without thinking about the consequences. Justified since she is supposed to be Vegapunk's angry/violent side. Against someone like Rob Lucci this proves nearly fatal.
  • Meaningful Name: Apart from being an asteroid, Atlas is named after the Titan who was condemned by the Greek Gods to hold the weight of the heavens on his shoulder and keeping it from crushing humanity. Atlas' current main job is "Violence" i.e. keeping Vegapunk's anger at bay and keeping it from interfering with projects by taking it out on Holographic creatures (that can't really get hurt, since they are made of light).
  • Megaton Punch: Her main attack is a powerful punch. With her "Light-Pressure" gloves, she can even punch holograms.
  • Mood-Swinger: While she's usually friendly and affable, she is still representing Vegapunk's violent side and can become extremely angry in an instant. After calmly explaining Luffy and his allies how the island works, she suddenly gets angry and punches a hologram.
  • Mundane Utility: Apparently a good chunk of her role is to provide exercise for the Vegapunks.
  • Power Fist: She is equipped with a "Light-Pressure" glove that can hurt light, including hologram creatures.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Her massive size makes her very physically imposing, but she doesn’t seem to have any martial arts training: her only named attack in the series is a basic windmill punch. Naturally, this works out poorly for her when she attacks Lucci (who is Strong and Skilled).
  • The Worf Effect: Atlas is presented as one of the tougher satellites, fitting for representing Vegapunk's violent side, but she gets absolutely wrecked by Rob Lucci just to show he's still a major menace. Her defeat also turns the Egghead Arc's mood into a much more serious one.

    Punk 06, "York The Greedy"

Punk 06, "York The Greedy"

Voiced by: Mutsumi Tamura (JP)

Debut: Chapter 1065 (Manga)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vegapunk_york_anime.png

"Mmmm... sleepy."
Chapter 1065

A young woman who represents the "greedy" aspect of Vegapunk's personality. Since the Satellites are often too busy working to bother with basic human needs York performs those functions for them.

  • Acronym and Abbreviation Overload: She goes into periodical "EPS Cycles" — EPS standing for "Eat Potty Sleep".
  • Balloon Belly: Her BMI exceeds 600 from how much she eats, but she's able to become slim again after one trip to the bathroom.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: York at first is set up as the main antagonist of the Egghead arc, being the mastermind of the Egghead Incident and having manipulated both her fellow Vegapunks and the World Government for her own ends. She also created (or at least sent the World Government) the "Mother Flame" weapon that Imu used to destroy the Lulusia Kingdom at the beginning of the arc as well. However, York herself is easily captured by the Straw Hats and their allies, leaving her helplessly begging for the World Government to bail her out from the "psychos", just as Admiral Kizaru and the Five Elders join the fight and leave her out of focus.
  • Big Eater: Justified. York has to perform all the Vegapunks' basic needs, so she eats for all six of them.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Enforced. All the Vegapunks are geniuses but her job is to eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom so that the others don't have to.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: The Five Elders decide to spare her alone because Imu has demanded the Mother Flame be mass-produced and they need at least one Vegapunk to do so.
  • Cute and Psycho: A cute young woman who spends her time eating and sleeping, but has no qualms about sacrificing everyone on Egghead, other Vegapunks included, to achieve her goals.
  • Cuteness Proximity: When she encounters S-Snake, despite knowing the Seraphim are going on a rampage, York reaches for her and comments how cute she is; this mistake makes her an easy victim of the Love-Love fruit. Subverted because it was all a ruse to make the other believe that she's not the traitor.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Out of all the Vegapunks, York is the one with the least screentime and dialogue, seemingly being there for the sake of some Toilet Humor background gags. She turns out to be the one behind all the strange events at Egghead. Everything from tipping off the World Government to kidnapping the Cipher Pol agents to setting up the death game was entirely her doing.
  • Evil All Along: Comes off as a one-off comic relief character at first, but she's the one who betrayed her fellow Vegapunks, turning the Seraphim against them, and sold information to the World Government so that she could become a Celestial Dragon.
  • Evil Genius: While Lilith represents the evil side of Vegapunk, York, who is as brilliant as all the Vegapunks, is actually the traitor and the one who fed intel about Vegapunk to the World Government.
  • Foreshadowing: Throughout the Egghead arc, multiple characters discuss the idea that desire is a deeply powerful emotion and can't easily be overcome even with the help of technology. Fittingly, the Vegapunk built around greed turns out to be the most conniving of the bunch.
  • Genius Slob: York is a slob to the T, spending most of her time sleeping, eating, and pooping. She's no less intelligent than the other Punks, even fooling the rest of them about her true intentions for months.
  • Giant Woman: She's tall enough that even Brook only comes up to her waist, making her the second tallest of the Vegapunks behind Atlas.
  • The Hedonist: Fittingly for being the personification of Vegapunk's greed, York enjoys having to eat and sleep for the other Vegapunks. Though her gluttony leads to wanting to become a Celestial Dragon whilst removing the other Vegapunks.
  • Killing Your Alternate Self: Makes it clear to the Stella that she plans to be the only Vegapunk who makes it off Egghead alive, even killing Shaka herself.
"The world only needs one Dr. Vegapunk."
  • Meaningful Name: Apart from being an asteroid, "York" is also the name of a Brilliant, but Lazy African-American slave who participated and contributed to the famous "Lewis and Clark Expedition" (though reports of his laziness might have been made up to downplay his contributions on the expedition). It's also the name of Herbert York, a famous nuclear physicist who later became a pacifist and helped establish the Comprehensive Test Ban of nuclear weapons during the Geneva Conventions.
  • The Mole: She's been feeding the World Government sensitive intel on Dr. Vegapunk and Egghead for the last three months.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: She acts like a sleepy airhead, but she's found a way to bypass the Punks' daily brain updating to Punk Records, and kept the other Vegapunks in the dark about her plans for three months. Justified, since she is a Vegapunk, but her job — being the one who handles basic needs for the other Vegapunks — doesn't require much brainpower, making her seem far less intelligent than she actually is.
  • Punny Name: York and the kanji for greed, pronounced "yoku," are homophones in Japanese.
  • Smug Snake: She's a certified scientific genius, but her strategic skills leave something to be desired, despite her ego. She sells out the other Vegapunks' research of the Void Century to the Five Elders hoping to be rewarded with a World Noble title, but failed to realize the Elders won't allow anyone who knows to live, informant or not, adding her to the hitlist alongside the other Punks. York attempts to salvage this by taking control of the Seraphim then taking the Stella and Cipher Pol agents hostage while playing the innocent damsel in distress, but this too falls through and she's captured by the Straw Hats. By the time the Five Elders decide to spare her, all she can do is cry and beg for someone to save her (while still smugly taunting her foes in any way she can).
  • Stripperific: Downplayed. York wears long-sleeved turtle neck top with jacket but her belly is exposed and wears very short pants.
  • Support Party Member: Since the other Satellites are often too busy coming up with new ideas and inventions, it falls on York to perform all of their basic needs for them. In her debut chapter, she wolfs down a lot of food, goes to the toilet to relieve themselves, and then sleeps, so that Edison and Pythagoras can continue their experiments uninterrupted.
  • Taken for Granite: While running across Egghead, York approaches S-Snake and gets turned to stone by her devil fruit power. It was done entirely on purpose for the sake of throwing off suspicion, and S-Snake releases York as soon as the others aren't looking.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: In her debut, York has eaten food for all of the other Vegapunks and is commented on to have a very high BMI but, after going to the toilet, she instantly slims down.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Of a different sort compared to Lilith. Despite initial appearances, York reveals the depths of her embodiment of Vegapunk's greed by revealing herself as the one responsible for leaking their research into the Void Century to the Five Elders and betraying the SSG in an attempt to become a World Noble, a group of people who the other Vegapunks found disgusting.
  • The Unfettered: She's so hedonistic that she wants to become a Celestial Dragon, ethics and other Vegapunks be damned.
  • Villainous Glutton: York is the traitor Vegapunk, the mastermind behind the bad events of the Egghead Arc, and is motivated by the desire to live a hedonistic life as a Celestial Dragon.
  • Walking Spoiler: Twice over. Her very nature as one of Vegapunk's satellites is a big spoiler in itself, but it's also hard to discuss her further without mentioning her villainous and treacherous role.

Vegapunk's Creations

Pacifista

    General

Pacifista

Debut: Chapter 505 (Manga), Episode 399 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pacifista_anime.png

The Pacifista are a series of Human Weapons developed by Marine head scientist Dr. Vegapunk. They are cyborgs built in the mold of the Warlord of the Sea Bartholomew Kuma, who was the prototype for the project. As stated by Sentomaru, the funds required for the construction of just one Pacifista are roughly equal to that of a Marine-issued battleship.

Sentomaru notes that after the timeskip period, PX-5 and PX-7 are outdated models from two years ago, meaning that the Pacifista project has been updated and modified. The new Pacifista units, labeled "MK. III", are far superior to their prototypes, with bubble shields for protection and higher intelligence.

  • Artificial Human: They appear identical to Kuma, but are completely mechanical on the inside.
  • Degraded Boss: They're nowhere as strong as PX-0 (Bartholomew Kuma), who had managed to curbstomp the entire Straw Hat crew in the previous arc and whose appearance and cyborg abilities they copy. This is most likely because they lack Kuma's own Devil Fruit ability, which is admittedly overpowered even by the series' standards.
  • Energy Weapon: Their signature weapon is a beam of light taken from Kizaru's Glint-Glint Fruit.. They can fire them from either their hands or their mouths.
  • Expy: They're very similar to the T-800. Luffy even defeats one in a similar vein to T-800.
  • Ironic Name: Vegapunk came up with their name when he heard Kuma describe himself as a "Weak-Willed Pacifist". He thought the name was fitting since they were to be modelled after a Pacifist and were going to be used to "bring peace" to the world. Unfortunately the World Government ended up using them in a completely different way.
  • Meaningful Name: The name "Pacifista" obviously stems from pacifist, and Vegapunk originally envisoned them to be soldiers who protect people from pirates. The inspiration for their designation originated from a conversation between him and their original model, Bartholomew Kuma, who agreed to this Clone Army idea in order to save his daughter's life.
    Vegapunk: You're a true saint.
Kuma: A saint? No, I'm nothing like that... just a weak-willed pacifist.
Vegapunk: Pe Pe Pe Peh!! I like that!! I think I'll use it for the name of my future soldiers!!
  • Mecha-Mooks: After the time-skip, the Straw Hats have become strong enough to easily defeat a Pacifista, but the latter is still a powerhouse for the average Paradise pirate.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: They are made of a substance harder than steel and as a result, can take staggering amounts of damage before breaking down.
  • The Quiet One: They're capable of speech but seldom do so.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Their lenses glow red when they're about to strike.
  • Robot Me: All of them are cyborg copies of Bartholomew Kuma minus his Devil Fruit powers.
  • Say My Name: What they do when they see a criminal.
  • So Last Season: They're defeated very easily after the Time Skip. Luffy destroyed one in a single punch while Zoro and Sanji defeated the other. It should be noted however that those particular models were outdated.
  • Spot the Imposter: The Straw Hats mistake one for the real Kuma; after they defeat it, however, they realize it's a fake.
  • Stat-O-Vision: Their eyes act as a targeting system that states the name and bounty of the target.
  • The Worf Effect: When the Straw Hats arrive at Sabaody for the first time, they exhaust themselves taking out just one. Right after two years of training, Luffy casually destroys one while Sanji and Zoro quickly destroy another and argue over whose attack was responsible.
  • You Are Number 6: Each unit has "PX-" and a number printed on their necks.

Seraphim

    General

Seraphim

Debut: Chapter 1059 (Manga)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_shark.png

The latest model of Pacifista, developed by Doctor Vegapunk as a replacement for the Seven Warlords. Unlike previous models, they are modeled after other former Warlords, and have the same features as Lunarians, which include the ability to emit and control fire, dark skin with white hair, and black wings.

As the Seraphim are the result of a new project, they're still children who have yet to grow into their full potential, but the power they already possess vastly exceeds the previous Pacifista models, to the point Dr. Vegapunk believes them to be the "strongest form of humanity".

  • Animal Theme Naming: Their names are derived from their real counterparts' animal motifs; S-Snake for Hancock, S-Shark for Jimbei, S-Hawk for Mihawk.
  • Artificial Human: Unlike the earlier Pacifista (robots made to look like Kuma), they are clones who were grown from scratch. They were also given Green Blood, allowing them to use abilities from Paramecia devil fruits.
  • Child Soldiers: Even though they're kids, they're used as living weapons by the World Government. Their young age makes a lot of people reluctant to fight them.
  • Clone Army: They are created from the Lineage Factors of the Seven Warlords of the Sea mixed with the Lunarian traits of King to fight for the World Government.
  • The Comically Serious: While the Seraphim are shown to be capable of emotions, they're still very stoic most of the time. Given that they're One Piece characters, this is played for comedy at points.
York: So, S-Snake, I want you to pretend to beat me while they're watching.
    S-Snake (Giving a thumbs-up sign): Okay.
York: And then undo your powers when they're not.
S-Snake (Still giving the thumbs-up sign): Okay.
  • Creepy Child: Don't let the fact that they're kids fool you; the Seraphim are very capable killers.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Despite seeming to have the upper hand for a bit, by the time the story returns in Egghead, they've been totally defeated, and the Straw Hats only have minor injuries at the end, meaning they've hardly slowed them down.
  • Cute Giant: They're all children, but they're all very large — the Straw Hats notice that S-Shark is as big as the original Jimbei despite being a child.
  • Cyborg: They're partly mechanical as they all share the artifical Glint-Glint Fruit abilities that were seen in the previous Pacisfista models.
  • Doppelgänger: The Seraphim appear to be child versions of the former warlords but with some Lunarian traits. They share some of their fighting abilities; S-Hawk even comes complete with a replica of Mihawk's sword Yoru.
  • Energy Weapon: They retain the laser attack from previous Pacifista models, fired from their palms.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Their pupils are star-shaped.
  • Genetic Memory: Vegapunk posits that the Lineage Factor can contain one's memories and experiences, which he uses to give the Seraphim the same fighting style as the person they're based on. S-Snake also inherits Hancock's attraction to Luffy.
  • The Heavy: While the main villain of the Egghead arc is the traitor, the Seraphim, under their command, are the main physical threat that the Straw Hats and their allies face in the Labosphere.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Justified. They're on the side of whichever person in the room happens to be highest on the Pacifista's Authority Hierarchy, which can of course change at any given moment. During the Egghead arc, they alternate between helping and fighting the Straw Hats depending on whether they're listening to CP0 or Vegapunk (and which Vegapunk, for that matter). Rob Lucci is quick to exploit this by taking Sentomaru out of commission, forcing the Seraphim to obey CP0 after he passes out since they cannot be commanded through Transponder Snails.
  • It Can Think: Unlike their predecessors who are more or less mindless killing machines, the Seraphim are capable of independent thought and emotions.
  • The Juggernaut: Invoked. They are meant to become the strongest fighters in the world, and the World Government's top weapon, so they are cloned from some of the most dangerous pirates on the planet, and were then "upgraded" with Lunarian DNA, and augmented with Devil Fruit abilities the originals may not have had; these traits make them powerful enough that they easily can be compared to the original Warlords. Luffy and Zoro recognize the Seraphim as so freakishly dangerous that they're willing to — with the utmost reluctance — form an Enemy Mine with Lucci and Kaku to defeat two of them.
  • Meaningful Name: In the Abrahamic faiths, the Seraphim are the angels closest to God, which fits in with both the "heavenly" naming theme of the World Government and the incredible power that they have. In addition, Seraphim translates to "burning ones", fitting with their control of fire.
  • Mix-and-Match Man: The Seraphim are made of the DNA, blood and powers of three to four people. They are cloned from the people who held the title of the Seven Warlords of the Sea at the start of the series, they're partly made out of King's Lunarian DNA which gave them Lunarian attributes, they're equipped with Kizaru's Glint-Glint laser power which they can fire from their palms, and they're also infused with green blood from Devil Fruit users which gives them the same powers as the original blood owner. While S-Snake and S-Bear got their green blood from the people they're cloned from, S-Shark and S-Hawk got their green blood from other people.
  • Modified Clone: They're clones of the Warlords spliced with Lunarian DNA and upgraded with a Devil Fruit ability, in cases where they didn't have one originally. They're also much larger than the original ones, with S-Shark being as large as the original Jimbei as an adult despite still being a kid.
  • Playing with Fire: One of the traits they share with Lunarians is the ability to create and control fire.
  • Quantity vs. Quality: The Pacifistas are mass-produced while the Seraphim are still in trial but they are extremely powerful. Vegapunk claims they're the "strongest form of humanity".
  • Silent Antagonist: They rarely if ever speak, making them even more dangerous and creepy to their opponents. Justified because their purpose is to be the World Government's strongest weapon, and a weapon doesn't have to talk but simply follow orders.
  • Super-Strong Child: Justified — they were all explicitly made from some of the most powerful people in the world and with the purpose of becoming a Living Weapon. Since they aren't complete, they're still in the child stage. The implication is that once they grow up, they'll be the strongest living things in the whole world. S-Hawk in particular was able to inmediately put Blackbeard, an Emperor, on the defensive with a single attack.
  • Super-Toughness: Their Lunarian genetics makes them far tougher than the Pacifistas. S-Hawk and S-Snake walk away from Amazon Lily without a scratch despite facing off against the Kuja and the Blackbeard Pirates and S-Shark tanks several big hits like Sanji's Diable Jambe and Franky's Radical Beam despite Vegapunk's fears of it being too incomplete to handle such attacks. Luffy explicitly compares their durability to Kaido's (King, their unwilling Lunarian donor, was able to No-Sell blows from Zoro that previously wounded Kaido so long as his flames were up).
  • Superior Successor: They are better at everything the Pacifistas can do with chilling ease. They combine the Lunarian's Superpowerful Genetics, the former Warlords' combat skills and the laser attack from the Pacifista models, with some Seraphim also possessing Devil Fruit abilities. Unsurprisingly, the World Government and the Marines are very willing to cut their losses with the Warlords when they have these new super weapons up their sleeves.
  • Superhuman Transfusion: By taking blood from other Paramecia Devil-Fruit users, refining it into "Green Blood" and making it their main circulation fluid, Vegapunk was able to give the Seraphim Devil-Fruit powers that were suitable for their forms:
    • S-Snake has the "Love-Love" fruit powers that the original Boa Hancock had.
    • S-Bear has Kuma's "Paw-Paw" fruit powers and is able to do the original's Ursa Shock attack.
    • S-Shark has Señor Pink's "Swim-Swim" powers that both enhance his agility, and can be combined with Fishman Karate to devastating effect.
    • S-Hawk has the "Dice-Dice" powers of Daz Bones that allow him to turn any part of his body into a blade, which works nicely with the Master Swordsman skills of Mihawk.
  • Two-Donor Clone: The Seraphim are a new Pacifista model cloned from the Seven Warlords of the Sea, but mixed with Lunarian genetic material from King/Alber, giving them his Lunarian abilities on top of their primary donors' natural talents. They also have Devil Fruit abilities from the Green Blood infused into them, either using the same fruit as their donor (Hancock for S-Snake and Kuma for S-Bear), or those of other captured pirates that augment their natural abilities (Daz Bones for S-Hawk and Señor Pink for S-Shark).
  • Tyke Bomb: They're genetically engineered Super Soldiers created to be the World Government's strongest weapons. According to Vegapunk, they are the strongest form of humanity achievable.
  • Walking Spoiler: Their existence comes with the revelation of the Lunarian tribe and the dissolution of the Warlord system, two important events that happen very late in the story.
  • Weak to Magic: They can tank Gear Fourth hits like nothing while the flames on their back are lit, thanks to their Lunarian heritage. But Zeus manages to visibly char S-Shark even when his flame is lit, suggesting their Lunarian toughness doesn't protect them against non-physical attacks. Seastone also works on them, due to their Devil Fruit infusion.
  • Winged Humanoid: Just like Lunarians, they have a pair of black wings; hence, their name of Seraphim Pacifista.
  • You Are Number 6: Downplayed. Each unit has "PX-" and a number printed on their necks, similar to the earlier Pacifista. Unlike their predecessors, however, each Seraphim is given its own name in reference to which Warlord they originate from. The Kuma Seraphim is called "S-Bear," the Jimbei Seraphim is called "S-Shark," etc.

S-Snake

Voiced by: Kotono Mitsuishi (JP)

Debut: Chapter 1059 (Manga)

Devil Fruit: Artificial Love-Love Fruit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_snake_manga_infobox.png

A Lunarian partly cloned from Boa Hancock.

  • Badass Adorable: Stands out among other Seraphim in that she weaponizes her cuteness, to make her opponents vulnerable to her Devil Fruit ability. She also inherits Hancock's crush on Luffy.
  • Copied the Morals, Too: Vegapunk doesn't just give her Hancock's powers, S-Snake has Hancock's affection for Luffy. When he mistakes her for the original, despite the physical differences, and asks her to depetrify his crew, she complies even when this isn't in her programming. She even mistakes some of Luffy's words as a love confession when they aren't.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Since S-Snake is still a young girl, her Love-Love Fruit's ability to petrify those who feel attraction towards the user is depicted as finding her adorable, instead of lust.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: She's naturally cute, but deliberately plays it up to drop her opponents' guard and render them vulnerable to her Love-Love Fruit.
  • Easily Forgiven: None of the Straw Hats or the Vegapunks seem to hold her killing Pythagoras against her - then again, to be fair, she was forced to follow orders from York, which is what she was brought up to do.
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: S-Snake acts against her commands by freeing everyone she petrified after Luffy asks her to, something Vegapunk notes shouldn't be possible. He could not predict that S-Snake would inherit Hancock's crush on Luffy through her Lineage Factor.
  • Not So Stoic: Despite acting like a mindless machine for most of the time, she's visibly flustered and blushes when Jimbei thanks her for guiding the Straw Hats to the escape rocket.
  • Precocious Crush: She's still a small girl, but she inherited Hancock's crush on Luffy. She even went against her orders to free the Straw Hats and allies she had petrified as soon as Luffy asked.
  • Suddenly Voiced: She speaks for the first time when she's guiding the Straw Hats to the escape rocket that leads to Egghead's upper levels.
  • Taken for Granite: S-Snake inherits the real Hancock's Love-Love Fruit powers, which allows her to petrify other people into stone.
  • Tsundere: S-Snake is just as much of a tsundere as the original Hancock, although unlike her, it doesn't apply to Luffy alone.
  • Where I Was Born and Razed: Played with. The Navy sends her with Koby to Amazon Lily to arrest Boa Hancock, the home island of the woman she's cloned from, but S-Snake herself has never been to Amazon Lily before.

    S-Hawk

S-Hawk

Debut: Chapter 1059 (Manga)

Devil Fruit: Artificial Dice-Dice Fruit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_hawk_manga_infobox.png

A Lunarian partly cloned from Dracule Mihawk, who seems to have taken his donor's sword skills to heart.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: S-Hawk's sword is sharp enough to cut down a large portion of Amazon Lily's mountain in one slash.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: S-Hawk can turn his limbs into blades thanks to Vegapunk studying and replicating Daz Bones' Devil Fruit abilities.
  • Not So Stoic: S-Hawk shows very little emotion most of the time, but is visibly frustrated when fighting Zoro. Zoro even lampshades this, commenting that S-Hawk is "more human" than the real Mihawk.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Fittingly for who he's based on, S-Hawk is able to cut a large portion of Amazon Lily's mountain in just one slash!
  • Sword Beam: He can fire off Rankyaku-like blasts of air from anywhere on his body as well as his sword, thanks to the power of the (artificial) Dice-Dice Fruit.

    S-Bear

S-Bear

Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (JP)

Debut: Chapter 1065 (Manga)

Devil Fruit: Artificial Paw-Paw Fruit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_bear_manga_infobox_1.png

A Lunarian-Buccaneer hybrid partially cloned from Bartholomew Kuma.

  • Fantastic Nuke: Similar to the original Kuma, S-Bear can use the Ursa Shock attack with his Paw-Paw Fruit powers, allowing him to compress air within his paws and release it to create a gigantic explosion.
  • Power Palms: He has the powers of a copy of the Paw-Paw Fruit thanks to Vegapunk, which grants him the original Bartholomew Kuma's ability to repel anything with his palms.
  • Super-Toughness: Stands out among other Seraphim in that due to the race of his template, Bartholomew Kuma, S-Bear has the tough constitution of Buccaneer lineage, on top of his lunarian one.

    S-Shark

S-Shark

Debut: Chapter 1065 (Manga)

Devil Fruit: Artificial Swim-Swim Fruit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_shark_manga_infobox.png

A young Fishman-Lunarian hybrid who was modeled after Jimbei, current helmsman of the Straw Hat Pirates and a former member of the Seven Warlords.

  • Ability Mixing: He has the power of the (copied) Swim-Swim Fruit, and he's introduced mixing it with the Fishman Karate he inherited from Jimbei.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: While Senor Pink, the holder of the original Swim-Swim Fruit, is no pushover, S-Shark is able to combine the Swim-Swim Fruit's powers with Fishman Karate, meaning he can basically manipulate any solid object like it's — well, water in the hands of a Fishman Karate user.
  • Irony: S-Shark is a Fishman with Lunarian genes and the Swim-Swim Fruit, so he has fire powers and is extremely formidable on land, yet he's weak in water because of his Devil Fruit power.
  • Non-Human Humanoid Hybrid: He's part Lunarian and part Fishman.
  • Oxymoronic Being: He is a Fishman with wings (although they do not appear to grant him flight), fiery elements, the power to swim inside concrete and the weaknesses of a Devil Fruit.
  • Sand Is Water: S-Shark possesses the same Devil Fruit ability as Señor Pink, allowing him to swim in any surface. He can also combine the Fruit's power with Fish-Man Karate's ability to manipulate liquid to draw out the fighting style's full potential even on land. Ironically, due to his Devil Fruit powers, he can't use Fishman Karate in the water.

Vegapunk's Subordinates

    Science Captain Sentomaru

Science Captain "Broadaxe" Sentomaru

Voiced by: Kazue Ikura (JP), Greg Ayres (EN)

Age: 32 (Pre-Timeskip), 34 (Post-Timeskip)

Debut: Chapter 497 (Manga), Episode 401 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sentomaru_anime.png

"He's late. The battleship should've already arrived. Strange... why haven't you contacted me, Uncle Kizaru? If we don't hurry... all of the rookies are going to be wiped out!"

Captain of the Marines' Science Unit, personal bodyguard of the brilliant Dr. Vegapunk, and now a fully fledged member of the Marines. "Broadaxe" Sentomaru rarely uses his eponymous weapon, though when he does it means he's either fighting seriously or just pissed off. He claims that he has the "strongest defense in the world", and his mastery of Armament Haki serves to back up that claim.

He refers to Kizaru as "uncle" (in this connotation, it's like referring to him as a Mafia boss), as he is the Admiral that he is most affiliated with. He initially had a great deal of respect for Kuma, what with him being the test dummy for building the Pacifista, but after the incident at Sabaody, his trust in him has weakened greatly and he refers to him in a derogatory manner, despite Kuma having lost his free will during his conversion to a Pacifista. He claims that he has nothing against pirates, but will still stop at nothing to crush them if that's what his higher ups command.

  • Acrofatic: Despite having the body of a sumo wrestler, he's quite agile.
  • Almighty Janitor: Despite having a low rank among the Marines, Sentomaru easily beats Luffy with his armament haki; fittingly, over the time-skip, he's promoted to a rank that better reflects his strength. He also outranks those who hold Authority Chips in the Pacifista's hierarchy.
  • Bring It: Realizing Kizaru is heading straight for him to kill Vegapunk, Sentomaru just smirks and holds his ground telling him to bring it on.
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": He has the Kanji "Sen" (戦) from Sentomaru (戦桃丸) tattooed on his left shoulder.
  • The Bus Came Back: After leaving the story after the Return to Sabaody arc, he returns during Egghead Arc, as Vegapunk's bodyguard.
  • Can't Catch Up: While he doesn't personally clashed with the Straw Hats after the time-skip, he sends two original model Pacifistas after them... which Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji promptly disposed with one shot each (though Zoro and Sanji both struck one at the same time, either of them would have finished it alone). Given that he's in complete shock by the level of strength that the Straw Hats show and that he doesn't even try to engage them personally makes it pretty clear that while he might also have gotten stronger, he's nowhere near their level anymore. Subverted when Wano retroactively reveals that his Armamant Haki is on a similar level to the likes of Rayleigh and Hyogoro, but by the time the Straw Hats meet him again in the Egghead arc, Sentomaru is gravely injured in a single strike by Lucci, who was himself knocked out for a short while in just 3 hits by Luffy in Gear 5, while doing no damage to the pirate in return.
  • Coat Cape: After the time-skip, Sentomaru wears a coat on his back to indicate his higher rank.
  • Determinator: Despite being gravely injured by Lucci, Sentomaru is able to hold on to consciousness long enough for the Seraphim to help Chopper and Jimbei take Atlas and Bonney up to safety. He also stays conscious long enough for the Seraphim not to provide aid to CP0, until Luffy knocks Lucci out. Even against Admiral Kizaru, Sentomaru refuses to run away and faces the Admiral despite knowing he has little chance and decides to hold off Kizaru as long as he can.
  • Expy: He heavily resembles the Japanese folk hero, Kintaro.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Downplayed. Right after he reluctantly chooses to ally with Luffy on Egghead for the sake of ensuring Vegapunk's safety, Sentomaru is incapacitated out by Rob Lucci. He manages to delay CP0's entry into the Labophase slightly afterwards though, and as he's being nursed in the Fabriophase he commands its evacuation fearing the impending siege by the Marines.
  • I Owe You My Life: The main reason he ultimately chooses to betray the World Government and protect Dr. Vegapunk, is that Dr Vegapunk took him in and saved his life.
  • Insistent Terminology: After the incident at Sabaody, he refers to Kuma exclusively as "PX-0" and "it." This initially seems to be a case of "It" Is Dehumanizing, but in actuality it's because Kuma is no longer Kuma, he cannot return to being Kuma, and Sentomaru wants to think of the Government puppet he has become as a completely different entity to Kuma, who was his friend.
  • The Kid with the Remote Control: Sentomaru has higher authority towards the Seraphim than CP0, which allows him to override their control and actually use them to attack CP0. Therefore, Lucci takes him out immediately in order to gain back control of the Seraphim.
  • Ki Manipulation: He's a master of Armament Haki, able to use the highest level of it, which allows him to hit enemies without touching them. He uses it effectively against Luffy, hurting him despite the latter being made of rubber.
  • Made of Iron: He takes a direct stab wound from Rob Lucci in the chest and remains conscious long enough to help Luffy escape with Atlas. He later takes a brutal beating at the hands of Admiral Kizaru with several laser beam attacks before going down. And he still is able to wake up shortly afterwards to save Bonney from falling to her death after the Admiral sent her flying, but he later lost consciousness after all the damage he took finally taking its toll on him.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is a reference to Kintaro, whom he resembles. One of Kintaro's allies is a bear and Sentomaru controls the Pacifista, who are based off Bartolomew Kuma (which means "bear").
  • Moment of Silence: He offers one to Kuma, when the machine that erases his personality gets activated.
  • Nothing Personal: Says to Luffy that he hasn't anything against pirates, but will follow orders as a Marine.
  • Odd Name Out: For some weird reason, he's possibly the only character in the whole series whose name is fully written with kanji. Most other characters, even those with Japanese names like Sengoku, have their name written in katakana (with the exception of certain characters whose names are written with only hiragana, e.g. Shirahoshi, and Wanoese characters, who often have names written partially in kanji, and partially in kana).
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As a Marine, Sentomaru is an enemy of the Straw Hats but he's a genuinely good person. During the Egghead arc, he makes sure all the workers on the island escape to safety once he realizes that the World Government is planning to repeat the fate of Ohara.
  • Stone Wall: Subverted. He himself only boasts about his defensive prowess and he certainly looks like he'd be a Stone Wall, but he can actually dish it out just fine.
  • Stout Strength: Sentomaru is built like a sumo-wrestler and is a very powerful fighter, being able to use Armament Haki and hurt Luffy's rubber body.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: During the Egghead arc he is forced to choose between his loyalty to Vegapunk and his loyalty to the World Government. After thinking for a bit, Sentomaru chooses to protect Vegapunk, because he owes him his life.
  • Undying Loyalty: Sentomaru is very loyal to Vegapunk, which trumps his loyalty to the World Government. When he is gravely injured by Rob Lucci, during the Egghead arc, he wills himself to stay conscious long enough for the Seraphim to help getting Atlas (who is a part of Vegapunk) carried to safety.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Admiral Borsalino was Sentomaru's mentor and close friend. However, after Vegapunk sides with the Straw Hats and Sentomaru follows the scientist's allegiance, Sentomaru and Borsalino are forced to fight, something they both regret to do.
  • Worthy Opponent: He considers Luffy a competent fighter, as much as he despise him for being a pirate. He bashes fake Luffy's skull in for using his name in vain and calls him an unworthy impersonator.

    (Former) Caesar Clown
A former member of the Science Unit. A scientist, he once worked alongside Vegapunk but was never quite able to match up to his colleague's genius. Due to accidentally destroying the facility at Punk Hazard and repeated ethical violations, he was removed from the Marines and branded a criminal. See his entry here.
