Baam Empire

    In General

  • Angelic Aliens: The Baam resemble Biblical cherubs with their large wings and long hair.
  • All Planets Are Earth-Like: Planet Baam is a Fantasy Counterpart Culture to Ancient Rome, and has gladiator colosseums and the like as part of it's culture. When it's destroyed, the Baam try to seek refuge on Earth due to how similar the planets are (in fact, Baams and humans are near-identical, except that Baams have wings). Later in the series, it's revealed that a small amount of Baam refugees have actually managed to assimilate into New Zealand and make it into their home.
  • Airborne Aircraft Carrier: Guranrol and Cobrard. Both could carry around combat troops and several Mecha Soldiers. The first was equipped with giant missiles and four giant blades that could be turned in giant spinning cutters. The second was equiped with four-headed cobras that fired green lasers and a turret shot tinier missiles.
  • Alien Invasion: The Barmians had no intention of invading Earth and wanted negotiating a peaceful settlement. However, the death by poisoning of their Emperor and the belief of Terrans had assassinated him changed that.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: Averted for the most part. Most Baam want nothing but peace and oppose Olban. Unfortunately, doing so results in them being killed. Olban, Georiya and his other goons play this trope straight.
  • Anti-Villain: All of the Baam antagonists except for Olban and his lackey, Georiya. They're just trying to ensure their people survive.
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: In episode 32, it's said that New Zealand was devastated from a war at some point in the past, but thanks to the support of the Baam Peace Corps, the country was able to get back on its feet. To repay their kindness, New Zealand welcomed Baam refugees and allowed them to have their own colony, Utopia, where both humans and Baamites live in peace.
  • Brainwashed: Very much implied at one episode when Erika was shown a machine that allows her to think of happy thoughts and reduce her stress with her Baam friend Cindy, and Erika's first suspicious response is if it's a machine that will drill up teachings that Humans Are Bastards and should die (it's not) to her brain. This gives the implication that many Baam soldiers (especially those under Olban) were practically indoctrinated to hate humans, making them very fanatic or at best REALLY fearful against humans.
  • Conveniently Close Planet: Averted. After Planet Baam was left in ruins due to a collision between the sun of Planet Baam and a miniature nebullae, the Baams evacuated as soon as possible and scrambled to find new housing. King Leon proposed the idea of Planet Earth being their new home, due to Baam and Earth being alike in nature, and travelled a long distance to negotiate with the UN about settling Baam refugees there. Even though Baam is ninety light years away from Earth, Leon somehow knew of it's existence and that it had a similarities to Baam.
  • Cool Crown: Baam-seijin crowns look like serpents and the tips are designed to explode once they're detached from the headpiece.
  • Culture Equals Costume: Almost all the Baam wear Roman-style clothing and headpieces that have pointed objects in their center. Erika keeps hers on even as she's performing medical operations.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Starbirds dub, they were called the "Volarians".
    • Zig-zagged in the Philippine-English dub. They were changed from Baam to Brahmin, but "Baam" is likely derived from "Brahmin" anyway.
  • Expy: Downplayed, but they have a lot of similarities with The Boazanian Empire from their predecessor series.
    • They're both a race of aliens that have heavily resemblance to the Earthlings except for a tertiary feature (horns for the Boazanians, wings for the Balmites) that run on Schizo Tech and mecha.
    • They both have a Long-Haired Pretty Boy blonde Prince that's been put up to the Earthern Invasion to distract them from the fact that they're secretly the heir to the throne.note
    • Both look down on humans and want to take over Earth for their own means.
      • They both take humans as slaves (though the Boazanians have been enslaving and warring since the dawn of time, unlike the Balmites).
    • They're both Fantasy Counterparts to Medieval European cultures - 17th Century France for Boazania, Ancient Rome for Balm.
    • The plot of both anime is kicked off when their planet's Alien Prince/Alien Princess falls in love with a human.
  • Fantastic Caste System: Richter creates one where traitors to the Undersea castle have their wings cut off, and have to live as slaves.note
  • Fantastic Racism: Richter declares that the Balmites are the superior race, and Balbas agrees. Gurney also holds this view, at first. Raiza also despises the human race and considers Erika a traitor for falling in love with one. Notable aversions to this trope are Erika, Margarete, Cindy, Melvi, Barandock, Ourin and the Baamite La Résistance]].
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: The Baam-Seijin have functional, angel-like, white wings sprouting from their backs. Their wings don't represent their alignment at all, though, they were not portrayed like being inherently good or evil, but like similar to the humans (Always Chaotic Evil was completely averted).
  • Homeworld Evacuation: In Erika's flashback, the Baamites are seen evacuating Planet Baam because of the interplanetary collision.
  • Human Aliens: The Balmians share a resemblance with humans as they can hide their wings at will and blend in on Earth.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Balm, Barm, or Baam? Similarly, is the demonym Balmite, Barmite, Baamite, Baamian, Balmian or Barmian?
  • La Résistance: In spite of Richter receiving an outpouring of support for spearheading the war, a Silent Majority of Baam-seijin want to honour King Leon's wish of everlasting peace and hail Erika as the key to ending the war due to her romance with Kazuya. Unfortunately, due to them interfering in Richter's plans of creating robots and executing Erika, he orders mass execution of any traitors found in the base, resulting in them becoming a Dwindling Party as the episodes progress.
  • McNinja: Baam assassins heavily resemble ninjas (down to the fully-black clothing), despite Planet Baam being Greco-Roman inspired.
  • Meaningful Name: Their name is taken from Brahmin, the highest caste in the Hindu system.
  • Men Are Strong, Women Are Pretty: Played straight with Richter and Erika - he's a Warrior Prince and she's a Princess Classic - but averted with Raiza, who's extremely violent. Even Aizam, the most skilled scientist of Baam, was a warrior in his youth.
  • Named After Their Planet: In the original Japanese version, they're called the "Baam-seijin"note . In the English dubs, however...
  • Otherworldly Technicolour Hair: While most of the Baam-seijin have standard hair colours like the blonde-haired Richter and the chestnut-haired Olban, some Baam like Raiza and Gurney have green hair and others like Barandock and Himley have blue hair. Even Erika's hair (black in canon) is portrayed as green in some supplementary material.
  • Planet Looters: Initially, the Balm sought to live alongside the Earthlings, with King Leon asking Isamu Ryuzaki to aid the housing of 2 billion Balm. However, when the peace talks went horribly wrong, Richter began believing that the humans could not be trusted, and decided to take over the Earth and turn it into a Balmite planet.
  • Single-Species Nations: Planet Baam is full of Baam and only Baam. When they're departing to meet the humans for the first time, Richter expresses distrust about them.
  • Space Romans: A literal example. The Balm Empire's buildings, aesthetics , fashionand culture seem to be modelled of that of Ancient Rome. Richter wears a Roman headdress, and the Balmites' religion resembles Christianity. Kyoshiro even lampshades this.
Kyoshiro: "As the Romans said, if you want peace, prepare for war. Come get some, Balms!"
    • In the Philippine-English dub, their planet is renamed to Planet Brahmin. In Indian culture, Brahmin is the highest caste, which is mirrored in the Balmite's belief that they are the superior race. Though it could be a coincidence, Raiza's style of dressing somewhat resembles an Indian saree.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: The Baamites didn't practice slavery in the past, but after the war with Earth, they turn captured Earthlings into forced labourers. When Margarete has her wings cut off after aiding Erika's escape from the Undersea castle, she is forced to work as one as well.
  • Winged Humanoid: The Baams resemble humans, but they have vast, angel-like wings that they can hide at will.
  • Wing Shield: Quite a few Baam soldiers, including Raiza and Richter, use their wings to shield themselves from gunfire.

Manga (by Noboru Sakaoka)

The heroine of the series. The peace-loving princess of Balm, Erika saw her father Leon assassinated during a peace conference and she mistakenly thought she had a hand in the death of Earth's representative Isamu Ryuuzaki. She's ordered by General Olban to assist her brother Richter in invading Earth for vengeance and atonement, working as a field medic, but ended up struck with amnesia and was recovered by Kazuya Ryuuzaki and fell in love. She regained her memories quickly enough and with heavy heart, returned to her brother, but her love for Kazuya, her supposed enemy and the son of the man she thought she accidentally killed her father, persisted and created conflict with her, as her fellow Baam-seijin, especially Richter, didn't take her relationship well...

  • Affectionate Nickname: Margarete calls her "Ohii-sama"note .
  • Alien Among Us: When she wakes up on Earth as an amnesiac, Kazuya and the rest of Daimovic assume she's a human, and she goes along with it. She's shocked when she remembers that she's a Baam, and tries to leave Earth out of shame.
  • Alien Princess: Second in line to the throne after Richter.
  • All-Loving Hero: Erika believes that hate is a terrible thing, and that there should be peace in place of conflict.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Upon entering Earth for the first time, Erika has no recollection of her memory and as a result doesn't connect well with most other humans, except Kazuya, who saved her.
  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: Erika aided the Baam military in their campaign to colonize the Earthnote , but lost her memories when her spaceship crashed and she suffered a traumatic head injury upon landing. She's discovered by our protagonist, and falls in love with him due to his kindness...until she regains her memories and realizes that their planets are at war.
  • Amnesiac Resonance: Erika can't help but feel like she has some sort of connection to the Mecha Warriors that ravage the Earth. When she gets her memory back, she's horrified to remember that she drew the blueprints for one.
  • Amnesiac Villain Joins the Heroes: While Erika was never truly a "villain" (her role in the Baam military was a medic), she's on the side of the Baam Empire until her ship crashing causes her to forget everything except her own name. When the Baams launch an assault on Earth, she's horrified and contemplates leaving the planet, even though she's in love with Kazuya. She never stops loving him, and eventually joins the side of La Résistance to help him.
  • Assassination Attempt: Near the Grand Finale, Erika pulls one on Olban, declaring that he killed her father and she is going to avenge him. Olban manages to avoid it. Then, it turns out the priest officiating the wedding is Richter, who also tries to kill Olban, only to achieve similar results. Luckily, Richter's third attempt is successful.
  • Assassin Outclassin': During the series finale, all of Erika's love-betraying actions were to put her in a position close enough to Olban and then kill him on spot. Unfortunately, Olban was Properly Paranoid in terms of Erika's sudden acceptance, so he managed to thwart the attempt just in time.
  • The Atoner: Erika became a medic because she was overwhelmed with guilt for shooting Dr. Isamu Ryuzaki, even though she was actually trying to prevent Richter from firing the gun.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Played straight for the most part; even as her ship crashed and she took a heavy fall to Earth, Erika remained unscathed. However, she is visibly charred when she received smoke inhalation injuries from the Mecha Warrior in the second episode.
  • Blood-Splattered Wedding Dress: Not literally, but Erika is about to be executed in her mother's wedding dress, and then wears another when she's about to marry Olban, and we know how that turned out.
  • Blue Is Heroic: One of her Unlimited Wardrobe outfits is a gorgeous blue dress.
  • Break the Cutie: The sheer amount of breaking this poor girl experienced throughout the series is just jaw-dropping.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him:
    • In the earlier episodes, once she realized she killed Kazuya's father, she tried to go back to the Undersea castle, in spite of him begging her to stay and asking for an explanation.
    • One of Erika's biggest feats near the end of the series. To get closer to Olban and accomplish her mission to ensure peace between Earthlings and Balmians, Erika shot Kazuya with a real gun. She pretended she had only been toying with him and that she was willing to get the power from being with Olban, leaving Kazuya utterly heartbroken. If she didn't do that, she wouldn't be in a position to attempt to assassinate Olban and cause the chain of events that led to Olban's death, with their mission accomplished and Kazuya learning the truth.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Erika used to look up to Richter, but after his violent nature took hold of how he acted in the Baam-Earth war, she could no longer associate herself with him. Nevertheless, she still cared for her brother even though he tried to execute her, and begged Kazuya not to kill him when they were on the battlefield.
    • Erika initially obeyed Olban when he told her to participate in the war, but she later came to realize that war wasn't what she wanted and her father would have wanted peace. Her view of Olban is broken for good when Kaya informs her that he's been mind-wiping and killing Baam, and that he killed her father.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Erika takes a calm-headed and gentle approach to situations, unlike Richter, who views violence as a means to an end.
  • Cain and Abel: Erika is the Abel to Richter's Cain, though Richter wasn't always this way. Before arriving to the Earthern moon to have peace negotiations with the Earthlings, Richter expressed doubt about the kindness of the Earthlings, while Erika and Leon told him to look on the bright side and have hope for the future. Though the resolution to allow the Baam refugees to Earth was approved, King Leon was poisoned, and Richter assumed it was the work of the humans as they had given him the cup that had it. To avenge his father, Richter tried to shoot the Earthern delegates in spite of Leon begging him not to, saying it would destroy all chances of peace between the two nations. His final words were begging Erika to stop her brother. Throughout the series, Richter's drive to annihilate the Earth and Erika's desire for peace clash multiple times, driving the two further apart and causing Richter to mourn the sister he once knew and loved as a "traitor". When Richter finds out that it was all Based on a Great Big Lie and it was in fact Georiya, a Baamite, who killed his father (being ordered to do so by Olban so he could have the throne), Richter is Driven to Suicide from the guilt of realizing he took millions of innocent Earthling lives and kills himself.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Erika is in constant fear of telling Kazuya that she played a part in killing his father, while in truth, a lackey of Olban did it, and he makes it look like Richter and Erika did it.
  • Childhood Friends: Erika was best friends with Cindy ever since the two were children.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Sort of. Erika's exact age isn't stated, she's younger than Richter (who was confirmed to be 19 in the Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection), which places her in the "teenager" category. She becomes the leader of Utopia after Barandock's death, and in the Grand Finale, Richter announces that Erika is now the leader of their people as he sets himself up to commit suicide.
  • Costume Porn: Unlike most Daimos characters, Erika gains a new Pimped-Out Dress every few episodes, usually in the form of fancy gowns or wedding dresses.
  • Cute Monster Girl: "Monster" is too strong a word, but Erika is a cute Angelic Alien Princess with a heart of gold.
  • Dead Guy on Display: Narrowly averted. Richter set her up to die by public execution, but some rebels in the Undersea Castle staged a diversion, flooded the base, and helped her flee for Earth.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Her mother is dead and her father was assassinated. To her shock, he wasn't killed by the humans, but by Olban.
  • Disowned Sibling: When Richter learns she's in love with Kazuya, he disowns her and has her put on death row.
  • Driven to Suicide: The guilt of shooting Isamu lingered in Erika's mind so much after meeting Kazuya that she willingly destructs Klein to punish herself. However, it turns out Raiza's claims of the robot's self-destruct feature were empty threats.
  • Dude Magnet: Erika is remarked to be beautiful by Kazuya, Melvi and Olban. While she reciprocates Kazuya's feelings, she's aghast by Melvi's attraction to her and disgusted by Olban's.
  • Execution: This is her ordered fate after Richter finds out she's in love with Kazuya, also sentencing Margarete to the same thing for helping her. While Richter considers it a tragedy because she's still his sister, many Baam onlookers cheer it on and call her a traitor.
  • Expy: Guess which Romeo and Juliet character she's based on?
  • Flowers of Femininity: Erika's hobby is working on flowers. When she's separated from Kazuya, she tends some that are pink and yellow, just like the ones in the garden where they properly met for the first time. Kazuya instantly recognizes them and is elated she remembered them.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Erika first met the humans when she attended peace negotiations with them to house Baam refugees; upon receiving a head injury, she forgot this.
  • Good All Along: Twice.
    • Erika takes responsibility for shooting Dr. Isamu Ryuzaki, but the astronauts who attended the peace meeting verify that Richter did it.
    • When breaking Kazuya's heart to save him, Erika expresses her desire to be Olban's lawfully wedded wife. This disgusts Margarete and Richter, but when they find out that Erika was secretly plotting an Assassination Attempt by using the wedding as a cover, they.
  • Good Princess, Evil Queen: Subverted and played straight. Erika is undoubedtly the Good Princess, but her brother, Richter, is an Evil Prince. Her father, Leon, was The Good King to Baam and shared her desire for peace, but unfortunately, he was assassinated by Olban, who would go on to become a tyrannical King Planet Baron.
  • Hair Color Dissonance: The cover of Daimos artbook portrays her (black in canon) hair as green.
  • Hereditary Wedding Dress: When Richter has Erika sentenced to execution for falling in love with a human, and Margarete as well for abetting her, Margarete makes a last request - she has always wanted to see Erika get married, and wants her to spend her last moments in the dress her mother wore when she married King Leon. To her surprise, Richter grants it. When Margarete is helping Erika put it in, she suddenly "poisons"note  the disgraced Princess, shocking everyone. Margarete proclaims that she poisoned Erika because she "couldn't bear to see her executed like a common criminal", while secretly hoping that by then Erika has fled to Earth.
  • Hime Cut: Erika wore her hair down when she was young, but as an adult, her hair is styled in this way.
  • Hope Bringer: Erika is this to Daimovic and the Baam of Utopia, who know that she carries Leon's will with her. Even the eyes of Kaya (who believed that the Baam were doomed after the death of Barandock) lit up when Erika reaffirmed that she stood for peace and would re-built Utopia.
  • Humiliation Conga: Erika is sentenced to death by firing, while many public onlookers treat it as if it's entertainment. Then, she's forced to play bride to Melvi, Olban's idiotic, drunk nephew, to survive. Then, at Utopia, she's vetted as if she's a criminal when proving herself to Barandock. Luckily, it stops there.
  • Interspecies Romance: She's a Baam-seijin who's fallen for a human. There are people on both sides who oppose this since their Planets are at war, but Kazuya and Erika refuse to let up each time.
  • Lineage Comes from the Father: The anime never explicitly clarifies if Erika and Richter's Royal lineage comes from their father or mother. However, since Roji is dead and Leon is the last Baam monarch standing, this applies. After Leon's death, Olban tries to use the fact that Erika is the last living Baam Royal Family member (Richter at that point was scheduled for Execution) to legitimize his rule by marrying her.
  • Love Hurts: Oh dear God. Sure, Kazuya did suffer through their love, but Erika just got heavier consequences on her side, from being ostracized by a majority of her race, disowned by her brother, and even she starts thinking that she's better off dead or being hated by Kazuya for thinking of killing his father by accident. But their love still prevails in the end.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Erika is amnesiac until she hears the voice of the Baam Admiral General challenging the Earthlings. She realizes it is the voice of her brother, and is horrified when she realizes that he's warring with the planet who's inhabitants took her in and treated her with kindness.
  • The Kingslayer: Attempted. Erika only agreed to marry Olban so that, on the day of their wedding, she could avenge her father by stabbing him in the heart. It doesn't work, but it shocks Richter and Margarete, who realize that she was Good All Along.
  • Mad Scientist's Beautiful Daughter: Erika. Or better said, she's The Evil Prince's Beautiful Little Sister.
  • Meaningful Name: "Erika" is the female form of the name "Erik", which was the name of many Scandinavian kings. Fittingly, Erika is the Princess of the Baam-seijin.
  • The Medic: She worked in the Baam invading force's field medic division before the amnesia hit in. She was a student of the esteemed Dr. Wallin, and Leon's last request to him was that he make a doctor out of his daughter.
  • No One Could Survive That!: There are many instances where Kazuya believes Erika to be dead, even going on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge in episode 19 after the ship she's in explodes (though she managed to leave through an escape pod). However, she defies death every time, determined to have a happy ending with Kazuya.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Erika is a Nice Girl and likes making friends, hence being this. It's not apparent at first, but happens more often when she gains her memories back.
  • The Pollyanna: According to Margarete and Cindy, Erika was this as a child. Cindy recalled Erika saved her from a strong wind as a child, and Margerete tells her the Erika she knew was courageous and brave. After being forced to leave Kazuya, Erika has become a shell of her former self.
  • Princess Protagonist: Downplayed. Erika is the princess of her people, but she's the Deuteragonist, the audience's go-to main character when it comes to the non-human race (Barmians).
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: She wears a pink dress in the Undersea Castle and on Planet Baam. While she was on Earth, she wore a green dress but also had a pink ribbon in her hair.
  • Planet Baron: With the death of Olban and Richter, Erika de facto is this to Small Baam. Subverted since they don't have a planet anymore since Earth has now welcomed them as refugees.
  • Please Dump Me: After remembering she's a Baam Princess, she tries to get Kazuya to forget about her. When it doesn't work, Erika turns to faking her own death, revealing her Baam side to Kazuya in doing so.
  • Politically-Active Princess: Erika uses her position to encourage anti-war sentiments, saying that the Baamites can co-exist peacefully with the humans. After Barandock dies, Erika takes his place as the leader of Utopia, and discusses the safety of the Earthern citizens with the government of New Zealand.
  • Princess Classic: In a polar opposite to her brother, Erika doesn't have a single violent bone in her body and wants peace for all. Even when she took part in the Earthern-Baamite war, it was as The Medic. Though the Baam soldiers warned of her of the risk, she refused to abandon them.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: After regaining her memories as a Princess and returning to the Undersea Castle, Erika wears pink instead of green.
  • Princess Protagonist: She doesn't remember that she's a Princess at the start of the story, but her memories are jogged when Richter sends a message to Daimos, and she recognizes his voice as her brother's. Realizing she's a Balm Princess sends her in a BSoD and she decides to cope by running away.
  • Proper Lady: As expected of a Princess, Erika is polite, formal and diplomatic. Around Kazuya, she's rather different.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Erika has dark, black, straight hair amongst pale white skin. Her eyes are bluish-green, and are very big and shiny.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Erika is calm, rational and believes that reason trumps honour. She believes that violence only worsens situations and increases strife. Richter, however, believes that Baam pride is more important than anything else, and they have a divine right to oppress and destroy the humans for wronging them.
  • Royal Blood: Since she's the Princess of the Balms, she has this through her father, King Leon, and her other, Queen Roji. it's why Olban wants to marry her - to legitimize his rule.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: While Richter leads the assault on Earth, Erika participated in the medical division by treating wounded soldiers, and then led the resistance of Utopia while aiding Daimovic from time to time.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Both Erika and Leon are extremely pacifistic, something many other characters note.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Erika is horrified at the prospect of violence and can't fathom Richter's levels of aggression. Even their appearances contrast - Richter's hair is light and untamed, while Erika's hair is dark and straight, Richter has Tsurime Eyes while Erika's are Moe-like and chibi, Richter dresses rather elaborately while Erika's appearance is so plain that an Earthern woman gets confused for her.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Erika is a proper lady through and through, but she has the willpower of steel that allows her to go through the hardest times or do brave things.
  • Star Crossed Lover: The love between her and Kazuya drives the story. And they're nearly driven apart for good many times.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Averted, she doesn't look anything like her parents. Leon (her father) as a youth had brown hair that was somewhat unkempt while Roji (her mother) had luscious, blonde, curly locks. Erika, on the other hand, has hair that is thin, black and styled in a Hime Cut. Richter, however, looks like the spitting image of Roji.
  • Tareme Eyes: In tandem with her innocous, deredere personality, Erika's eyes are like this.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Like her brother, Erika believes in the Baam religion. She prays before her wedding to Olban.
Erika: "God of Baam, guide these hands around Olban's neck."
  • True Blue Femininity: While on Utopia, Erika gains a new outfit, a blue dress with a hem of a darker shade.
  • Twinkle in the Eye: Erika's eyes by default have gleams in them.
  • You Killed My Father: Two ways:
    • Because of thinking that she accidentally killed Kazuya's father, she tried so hard to invoke this trope to Kazuya, just so he'll suffer less and she thought she didn't deserve him this way. Kazuya proceeded to defy all those, which made her happy.
    • After learning the truth from Kaya, she's enraged with Olban for masterminding her father's death and did her best to give her middle finger to him by plotting his demise at their wedding.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Erika has several different outfits she wears throughout the story.note

    Leon

King Leon
Young
Wedding day

The father of Erika and Richter, and the leader of the Baam. He is trying to save his people after planet Balm were devastated by a meteor by looking for a new planet to inhabit. He desired a peaceful co-existence, but thanks to the plot of Olban, he ended up being killed by poison and the Earthlings were blamed.

  • All-Loving Hero: Leon held no hate in his heart for anyone, not even the Earthlings even though they supposedly poisoned himnote .
  • Ambiguous Situation: Did Leon know the Earthlings were innocent, hence why he told Richter not to shoot them? Could he have seen Olban's assassination attempt coming?
  • Assassination Attempt: Leon dies this way, by his tea being poisoned during peace negotiations with the Earthlings. Richter blames the Earthlings for it because it happened at their conference when it was actually Georiya who killed him after being ordered to do so by Olban.
  • Big Fun: He's on the tubby side, but a kind-hearted and sweet old man nonetheless.
  • Dub Name Change: Italian: Generalissimo Lion.
  • Cool Old Guy: Leon is seen as this by many of the Balmites who resist Olban's rule, including Oorin, Gurney, Barandock and Melvi, because his encouragement of peace over war resonates with them.
  • The Good King: He belived that Earthlings and Balmians could live in peace. Even after he was poisoned by Georiya, and Richter misunderstood the situation as the humans poisoning him and tried to kill them as revenge, he begged Erika to stop Richter because killing them would end all chances of Earthlings and Balmians co-existing peacefully. Erika tried to stop Richter by attempting to wrangle the gun out of his hands, but was unable to and he shot Earthling representative Isamu Ryuzaki, kicking off the war.
  • Good Parents: He doted on Erika and Richter very much, and his death broke the latter.
  • Happily Married: We get a flashback of his wedding with Roji, where overjoyed onlookers threw petals as the couple looked at one another lovingly.
  • Hunk: In his youth, Leon resembled one with his muscular jaw, broad shoulders and chiseled body.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice: Leon, in his youth, had a chiseled jaw. Richter inherited it, but he's hardly a force of justice.
  • Meaningful Name: An accidental version in the Italian dub. His name is Lion there, and he is indeed the Sacrificial Lion for the events of the show.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: His death is why Richter thinks Humans Are Bastards, how Erika landed on Earth and how Olban took the throne.

The wife of Leon, and the mother of Erika and Richter. She died when they were young.

  • Everyone Loves Blondes: Roji had golden locks and was beloved by everyone around her.
  • Happily Married: To Leon. Unfortunately, she would die shortly after becoming a mother.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is likely derived from "Raja", the Indian word for "Emperor". She is the Queen of the Baam, as she's the wife of King Leon.
  • Regal Ringlets: She was the Queen of the Baam and had long, coil-shaped ringlets that almost reached her waist.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Roji's wedding dress becomes a plot point in episode 16, when Margarete uses it to hide the serum to save Erika from execution.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Roji has one to Richter - it's clear where he inherited his hair and facial features from.
  • The Voiceless: Roji never speaks despite appearing in multiple flashbacks.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Roji is barely mentioned outside of flashbacks. She also doesn't have any speaking roles.

Erika and Richter's governess since they were young, and later, Erika's confidant and collaborateur in her attempts to reunite with Kazuya. Margerete is caught by Richter's forces, and as a result sentenced to execution. However, some rebels interrupt it. Margarete then has her wings cut off and is forced to work as a slave, until Barandock's forces rescue her.

  • All There in the Manual: The Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection states that she was the wet nurse and educator of Erika and Richter.
  • Cool Old Lady: Margarete is wise due to her age, and accurately guesses that Erika is in love with Kazuya. She also encourages her to pursue him in spite of her guilt regarding his father.
Margarete: "If he in turn loves you just as much, he will forgive you of everything. Is that not the way of true lovers?"
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Phillipine-English: Rowena.
    • Starbirds dub: Margareta.
    • Italian dub: Margareth.
  • Good Parents: To Erika. She encourages her to follow her heart and do what makes her happy.
Margarete: "The Princess I knew was a trustful soul as well as a courageous Baam."
  • Idiot Ball: In the final arc of the anime, it doesn't occur to Margarete that Erika's reasons for wanting to marry Olban don't come from a place of love. This is despite the fact that Margarete has helped Erika pull off one Zany Scheme after the other, and you'd think by now she's figure out Erika is plotting to kill him.
  • Named In The Adaptation: Margarete is based off the Nurse from the original Romeo and Juliet story. She is the personal servant, guardian (and former wet nurse) of Juliet Capulet, but her real name is never mentioned.note
  • Parental Substitute: Erika and Richter's mother is dead, and it's mentioned that Margarete raised them both from infancy. Even though Richter is cold and abusive to her, she still cares about him and desires his safety, but helps Erika escape to Earth against his wishes. As a result, he orders her execution. She is rescued by Barandock's rebels and taken to New Zealand where she reunites with Erika.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Margarete's dress is pink. Her sash is also pink, but is a darker shade.
  • Please Spare Her My Liege!: To save Erika from Richter's wrath when he found out she was in love with Kazuya, Margarete shields her with her own body and begs this.
  • Promotion to Parent: Since Erika and Richter are orphans, she is this trope. Unfortunately, Richter rejects her as a mother figure.
    • Near the Grand Finale, before Erika is set to marry Olban, she thanks Margarete for raising her as if she was one of her own, and then breaks down crying after telling her that she must never see her again. Poor Margarete is left speechless at Erika's behaviour, until she catches a glimpse of the dagger hidden in the wedding dress. She puts two and two together and realizes that Erika has other plans for Olban.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Erika and Kazuya. Though she was initially against their romance, she later realized he was the one for her, at one point even delivering flowers Erika worked on to him as a gift. She is absolutely disgusted when Erika insists on marrying Olban, repeatedly bringing up her love for Kazuya, as well as the fact that Olban is a tyrannical king who killed her father. It wasn't until she saw the dagger that she realized that Erika's affections for the king were a ruse; she was planning to assassinate him.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of the Baam-seijin Royal Family, Margarete is the only one who helps Erika fulfill her romance with Kazuya, even when she knows it'll get her in trouble.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Erika considers giving up because of Kaya telling her the Awful Truth, Margarete chastises her for her cowardice and reminds her that she is King Leon's daughter.
Margarete: "Does your courage collapse when confronted by a single obstacle, my lady? Be aware of your position."
  • You Are Worth Hell: After reminding her to have courage, Margerete tells Erika she will stay by her side no matter what, as do the rest of Utopia. It brings her to tears.

Undersea Castle

    Undersea castle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/undertheseaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.png

After peace negotations with the Earthlings ended with disaster, the remaining Baamites fled to a hidden based underwater, known as the Undersea castle. It has a population of a few Baamites, a billion more in cryostatis. It's also where the Baamites launch their mechas from.

  • Home Base: Of the Baamites, since after their planet was destroyed, they don't have a home. The Undersea castle contains fighting grounds, hospitals, labratories, prisons, public execution areas and other marks of civilization for the Baamites. Erika and Richter, being royalty, have their own special quarters, as do Raiza, Balbas and Aizam for being Richter's minions.
  • Landmarking the Hidden Base: The Undersea castle has a statue with angel wings at the top, as a reference to the wings of the Baamites.
  • La Résistance: Not everyone in the base agrees with Richter's ideals, and some work to undermine him and aid Erika.
  • Underwater Base: The Baam Home Base on Earth is located on the bottom of the ocean.
  • War Refugees: Not war refugees, but the Baamites's original planet was destroyed after it crashed into another nebula, so this base is their second home, after Small Balm.

Raiza
Reference sheet
Manga (by Noboru Sakaoka)

A female lieutenant of the Balm Invasion Force, Richter's right hand woman. She's fiercely loyal to Richter and continued to support him through his path. She's responsible in creating many Battle Robots to be sent out against Earth, and is knowledgable in science. Apart from creating machinery, Raiza enjoys commanding Richter's forces and torturing prisoners. She only shows her caring side to Richter and Aizam.

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Raiza loves Richter, but he views her as a nuisance at worst. He also treats her like a punching bag and takes out his frustrations on her.
  • Alpha Bitch: In contrast to the sweet-natured Erika, Raiza is a cruel bully who enjoys making others suffer. She also takes pleasure in seeing Richter abuse Gurney, as she was insecure that he would take her position. She also regularly subjects Erika, Cindy and Margarete to harsh treatment.
  • Appeal to Force: Raiza brandishes her whip when she doesn't get her way.
  • Beauty Is Bad: As awful as she is personality-wise, one cannot deny that Raiza is a gorgeous woman, and characters in-universe remark on her desirability. Ironically, the one person who doesn't is Richter, who Raiza is in love with.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: After Margarete "poisons"note  Erika, Raiza comes to the old woman's defense as Richter admonishes her, stating that she understands why she did it - Erika is a noble Princess, and being poisoned is a preferable alternative to die an undignified death through Execution. Richter buys her sincerity, but Margarete doesn't - and she's right to do so, as it turns out Raiza was hoping that Margarete would let her guard down and tell her more about her plans with Erika.
  • Blackmail: Raiza keeps Erika's first escape attempt a secret (as well as ordering the Baam troops to keep silent about it) with the intent of holding it over her head to use as Blackmail later.
  • Blind Obedience: Taken up to eleven. She is so desperate to be of use to Richter that she becomes vehemently angry when he asks someone else (such as Gurney Halleck) to carry out his orders and tries to sabotage them. When Richter does ask her of something, she pulls out all the stops to make sure it goes smoothly as planned - for example, taking a whole flight of battleships with her while burying Erika on Earth because she was certain Daimos would interfere. For what it's worth, she actually did turn out to be correct, Daimos did interfere - because she gave them a heads-up through Margarete. When Richter sees Kazuya at the burial, he's furious and challenges him to a duel.
  • Boyish Short Hair: The official art book of Daimos reveals that Raiza had this hairstyle as a child. However, as an adult, her hair nearly touches the ground.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She's fairly busty, which is partly why Balbas is so attracted to her, and he can't help but stare at her cleavage when she gets close to him. Her breasts also tend to get gratuitous Male Gaze shots.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Raiza despises the idea of anyone who isn't her being close to Richter. When Richter dismisses her in episode 9, she begs him to allow her to stay. She also spies on his conversation with Gurney, and whispers that she would sell her soul just to have Richter's trust back.
  • Commonality Connection: Raiza and Aizam are both scientists. Though he initially stated that Richter was his only friend, the two bond pretty quickly once he's assigned at the Undersea castle.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Constructed a secret base on Earth, which comes in handy when Georiya assumes authority of the Undersea Castle and has Richter and all loyal to him kicked out.
  • The Creon: She wants to see Richter on top and won't accept any other outcome.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: While trying to shoot Olban, her bullet misses, but manages to break the glass. Forced to grab the rooftop to survive, Olban steps on her fingers one by one, and Raiza eventually falls to her death.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has teal-green hair and eyes.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine dub, she was known as Laila.
    • In the Starbirds dub, she was known as Lisa.
    • In the Italian dub, she was known as Laiza/Liza.
  • DreamWorks Face: Raiza makes one whenever she takes pleasure in delivering bad news or manipulating people to her whims.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: She relentlessly assaults Erika, Cindy and Margarete before imprisoning them. When she blames Margarete and says that she should have guided Erika better, Margarete replies that witnessing the love blossom between her and Erika made her realize Baam-Earth peace was possible. When Cindy agrees, Raiza whips her face.
  • Expy: Of Katherine from Voltes V, Daimos's predecessor in the Robot Romance Trilogy. Both are hot scientists that are secretly in love with their respective Prince. They are both gifted at manipulation, take pride in being right hands, manufacture mechas and die protecting the men they love.
    • At the same time, they have many differences - Katherine is a refined Proper Lady, while Raiza uses her assets to get what she wants.
    • Katherine has many moments of sweetness and kindness in spite of being a villain, but Raiza is cruel to everyone that isn't named "Richter" or "Aizam".
    • Katherine and her Prince were childhood friends, while Raiza and Richter are comrades.
    • Katherine eventually became horrified at the atrocities of war and tried to convince Heinel to flee with her, while Raiza refused to abandon her battle and died a warrior's death.
  • Evil Genius: Raiza creates the Mecha Warriors that Richter and Balbas man throughout the series. She even manages to create one that's near-invincible, but it comes with the caveat of killing the pilot.
  • Green and Mean: Raiza's hair and eyes are a glamorous green colour, but she's one of the more sadistic soldiers of the Baam Empire.
  • The Gunslinger: Raiza is mainly seen using a whip. However, once she manages to her hands on a gun, she's surprisingly good with it and successfully mows down Miwa's men to protect Richter.
  • Hidden Buxom: It's not apparent at first, but close-ups and the Shower Scene show that Raiza is very well-endowed.
  • I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!: A literal example. In episode 9, as she's telling Balbas about her plan to dispose of Gurney, the camera pans down to her boobs and stays there for a while.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Raiza or Ryza?
  • Jerkass: She shows a Lack of Empathy to anyone who isn't Richter or Aizam, views her underlings as machines, and jumps at every opportunity to further the Empire's position in the war.
  • Kick the Dog: The first thing she does when Erika is retrieved to the base is angrily berate her and tell her Richter had no idea where she was. She later coerces Erika into piloting a mecha designed to kill the pilot, and whenever Erika plans to escape to Kazuya, Raiza calculates schemes to catch her in the act and use Erika to her advantage.
  • Lack of Empathy: Raiza thinks of Richter and only Richter; everyone else is irrelevant to her. She shames Erika "for making him worry" in spite of Erika suffering amnesia from a traumatic ship crash. This is subverted by her treatment of Aizam, who she shows concern for as he coughs and faints from his illness, and her disgust at Olban for playing with the lives of the Baam in cryostatis.
  • Lady Macbeth: Raiza tries to be this. She's either dismissed by Richter because he doesn't have faith in her skills, or told off for being too violent/reckless.
  • Lady of War: Raiza is hell-bent on winning the war through any means necessary. She is Crazy-Prepared for the most random of scenarios and her weapon of choice is the whip.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Many examples.
    • She sabotages Gurney's spar with Kazuya by sending unrelated gladiators, which force him to invoke his moral code, knowing it will anger Richter and drive a rift between the two.
    • When Erika escapes for the first time, Raiza makes sure to document the act for Blackmail purposes.
    • She forces Erika to pilot Klein, a Mecha Warrior that has a high chance of killing the pilot, threatening to torture Cindy and Margarete if she refuses. She tells Erika that as long as she doesn't flee from the battle, Klein's self-destruct feature won't activate, before deploying her against Daimos. During battle, Erika refuses to fight Kazuya and willingly activates the self-destruct device...only to be sent back to the Undersea Castle in an escape pod.
    • She manipulates Georiya by claiming that Richter forced her to work for him and she actually hates him, but after she has him fooled, she takes off with Richter to safety.
  • Ms. Fanservice: In episode 9, we get a long Shower Scene of Raiza showing off her massive bust and nude body. After the shower scene, the camera reminds you that she has massive breasts by panning down to them. In general, Raiza's clothes are skimpy and emphasize her arms and legs.
  • Morality Pet: In spite of Raiza being a Smug Snake who's devoted to a violent warmonger, she expresses concern for Aizam and his failing health. When he falls from exhaustion, she flies down and catches him. Even before that, the two were seen bonding over their shared love of science.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Raiza's clothing and wings are pink. Even her whip is a hot-pink colour.
  • Sadist: Be it a child like Cindy or an old lady like Margarete, Raiza will take pleasure in their suffering.
  • Satellite Character: We don't know anything about Raiza's history or motivations, all we're shown is that she has a hopelessly one-sided crush on Richter and that she's shameless about mooning her tits to the audience. Even one-off characters like Himley and Gurney get more exposition and development than her. Every appearance of her is always Richter-related, including her death. It is only after she dies that Richter shows some sort of reciprocal for her feelings, stating that the two will be Together in Death.
  • Satellite Love Interest: She very obviously loves Richter, but sadly this love is unreciprocated. Though, Richter's "together in death" line implies that there's something there.
    • Many pieces of meta material like concept art and promotional images depict Raiza in battle armour and as a child, implying that she originally had a much bigger role in the story. Given that the anime was originally supposed to run for 50 episodes (before the network forced it to end at 44), it's likely they were scrapped because of lack of runtime.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: One scene has Balbas entering her room and seeing her showering, he becomes abashed at seeing her Sexy Silhouette and apologizes, before trying to leave. Raiza's unbothered by it, and starts a conversation as if something happened, despite him clearly being Distracted by the Sexy.
  • Smug Snake: Every time she gets one up over Erika, she smirks and glares at her.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Between Richter and his allies (her, Balbas, Gurney and Aizam), she's the only girl.
  • Spear Counterpart: She's essentially Richter in a pink dress, minus the honourable qualities and Morality Pet in Erika. While Richter has a sword, Raiza has a whip, and they both have similar looking battle suits.
    • She can also be considered one to Miwa, as they both believe their crusade in war is glorious, are incredibly petty to their own allies and disregard the lives of their own people for their own benefit.
  • The Three Faces of Eve: Raiza is the hot and sexy seductress, using her body and charms to manipulate things in her favour, in contrast to the innocent, playful child Nana and loyal, loving wife Erika.
  • Torture Technician: Richter appoints her to cut off Margarete's wings and torture her, which she does with pleasure.
  • Whip of Dominance: In some episodes, Raiza uses a whip to punish those of her underlings that she thinks aren't working hard enough. She also uses it to intimidate people who oppose her.
  • Would Harm a Senior: In episode 17, Raiza tortures Margarete and has her wings slit off, in spite of her being the woman that raised Richter and Erika since birth.
  • Yandere: Raiza is so obsessed with Richter that him having platonic relationships is enough to anger her, and some of her lines imply that she views Erika as competition for his attention as well.

    Balbas

Balbas (猛将バルバス )

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toushou_daimos_2.png
Balbas

A big, burly Balm Invasion Force lieutenant that serves as Richter's right hand man, occasionally teaming up with Raiza. He presented himself as a typical brute, but eventually it was revealed that he had a noble side as well.

  • All Men Are Perverts: Balbas is easily wooed by Raiza's breasts.
  • Bald of Evil: In contrast to his counterpart Jangal Rui in Voltes V, who had a head and face full of hair, Balbas is bald.
  • The Brute: In the earlier episodes, Balbas played this trope the full effect, organizing various terror attacks across Earth and hoping to break Daimos. However, when he is capable of empathy, as he felt very sorry for Erika when he was under the assumption that she was tortured by the Earthlings, and felt shock upon seeing Gurney being beaten with a staff, while Raiza took pleasure in it.
  • Captain Patriotic: Balbas takes pride in being a Baamite and states everything he does is for the sake of Little Baam. One of the reasons him and Kazuya bond is because they want to free them from Olban's tyranny.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Balbas dies after being shot, and then stabbed multiple times, by Georiya's goons. The reason he managed to get into close proximity to them is because he wanted to take Kazuya back to Daimovic. Though Kazuya is appalled at his bleeding body, Balbas tells him to keep moving forward and forget about him.
Balbas: "Remember, the fate of a Billion Balmites is in your hands now."
  • Humanizing Tears: In episode 35, Balbas is imprisoned by the Daimovic base (after Genta finds him unconscious on the beach), and expects them to treat him badly. Instead, Kazuya treats him with respect and asks for his co-operation, which Balbas refuses. After he leaves, Balbas is seen shedding tears, admitting he was moved by Kazuya's compassion.
  • Morality Pet: Kazuya becomes his in episode 35. Though the Baamite general starts off as abrasive and confrontational, he is touched by the boy's unflinching kindness, though he tries to suppress it. After Kazuya is attacked by Georiya's goons, Balbas takes off his own bandage and places it on Kazuya's injury to nurse it.
  • Pet the Dog: While Raiza scolds Erika for making Richter worry, Balbas shows concern for her welfare, telling Margarete that she could barely stand on her own when he found her.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Balbas spends most of the series imprisoning, shooting and killing humans, including vulnerable women and children. However, he goes out by risking his life to bring Kazuya to Daimos, his last words bein that it is all for the sake of the Balmites.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Richter. He asks him to take him along when they go to rescue Aizam, who's on a Suicide Mission.

    Gurney Halleck

Gurney Halleck (ガーニィ・ハレック )

Voiced by: Hiroya Ishimaru (Japanese), Angelo Maggi (Italian)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gurneyhalleck2a.png
Gurney Halleck

A Baam-seijin criminal sentenced with life in prison and gladiator fights, only to be released by Richter to defeat Kazuya. However, in process, he ended up respecting Kazuya's fighter spirit and honor and urged for peace between Baam-seijin and Earthlings, which infuriated Richter. After being freed by Erika, as a last act of honor, he sacrificed his life by hijacking Battle Robot Shyfurd and taking it to space, sparing Kazuya from being blown up with its built-in bomb, stating that just like Erika, he believes that the day that the two will reunite and both races coming together in peace will come.

  • Ambiguously Gay: While speaking honourably of Kazuya to Richter, one of his lines is that he can see why Erika finds Kazuya so appealing. He also shields Kazuya with his body while the Balmian gladiators shoot at them both, resulting in him being too injured to fight.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Phillipine-English: Hector.
    • Italian: Garbey Enrich.
  • Famous Last Words: As Gurney flies the Shyfurd into space, knowing he will die when it explodes, Gurney reflects on the vastness of the universe.
Gurney: "Piercing this universe, into the starry sky, this vast and infinite universe is my home..."
  • Go Through Me: Gurney protects Kazuya from the Balmian Mooks this way, believing that it is unfair that they interfere in the fight and put him at a disadvantage. When Kazuya protects him in return, Gurney realizes that he has a good heart, and asks for Richter to cease the fighting.
Kazuya: "Halleck! Why did you save me?"
Gurney: "Just as you love Earth, I love Baam!"
    Kazuya: "What?"
Gurney: "To achieve peace between Earth and Balm, Kazuya Ryuzaki, brave men like you must not be allowed to die!"
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Gurney is introduced to us as a Balmian criminal, but it's later shown that he has a code of honour and believes in a fair fight. When Kazuya is attacked by the Balmian gladiators, Gurney curses them and swears to protect Kazuya with his body.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Gurney is a handsome man and the camera rewards us to shots of him kneeling and stretching, with attention given to his arms.
  • Noodle Incident: We never find out why he was in prison in the first place.
  • Odd Name Out: He is the only Baam-seijin to have a full name that includes a surname.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Gurney dies protecting Kazuya and delivering Erika's message to him.
  • Shout-Out: He is named after the Dune character of the same name.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Gurney has messy, dark teal green hair, and his tight clothing exposes his bared, muscular arms. When he's introduced, we as the audience get a ''lot'' of shots of his bare skin.

    Aizam

Aizam (アイザム )

Voiced by: Makio Inoue (Japanese), Unknown (Italian)

Aizam
Reference sheet

A Balmian reknown scientist, originally ordered by Olban to replace Richter as the invasion force commander, but he ended up swearing his loyalty to Richter instead. His research and improvement forced the Daimovic to implement great upgrades to Daimos, but Aizam hid a severe sickness, overworked himself and got himself into a fatal battle with the upgraded Daimos. Turns out, he wanted nothing more than a warrior's death instead of succumbing to his sickness, something he finally achieved.

  • Ambiguously Gay: His devotion to Richter can be read as this. Moments before he embarks on his Suicide Mission, he tells Richter that for all his life, he was his Only Friend. Richter is left speechless when he says that he would gladly sacrifice his life for his sake.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: In Richter's flashback, the two met when they sparred in a gladiator duel. While both were formidable opponents to one another, Richter emerged victorius.
  • Dub Name Change: Izam in that infamous Philippine-English dub.
  • Expy: Downplayed, but like Raiza, he has some qualities in common with Katherine Rii from Voltes V. Both are esteemed scientists that work on creating complex mecha and their creations manage to badly dent the heroes' mecha. They are endlessly loyal to their respective Prince, and their deaths cause them to go on Roaring Rampages Of Revenge against the humans. In addition, Katherine has a blatantly obvious crush on Heinel, and Aizam's feelings towards Richter come off as Ambiguously Gay.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Richter notices that Aizam frequently coughs ever since he joined the Undersea Castle, but Aizam assures him it's nothing to worry about. Aizam is actually suffering from an unknown illness, but it didn't kill him.
  • Famous Last Words:
Aizam: "Forgive me, Richter! I was of no use! Hahahahahaha!"
  • Go Out with a Smile: This is how he dies. After failing to defeat Daimos, Aizam apologizes to Richter for not being able to defeat him and lets the carnage annihilate him.
  • Hime Cut: The back of Aizam's hair is flat, dark black, neatly trimmed Hime Cut.
  • Evil Genius: Aizam developed his own formula known as Aizaron particles, that strengthen the mecha's armour and nearly break Daimos to pieces, which results in Dr. Izumi having to sacrifice some of the Daimo light and use the Photon Missile. Said Photon Missile was also developed by Aizam, and when Richter finds out that someone in the Undersea Castle leaked his research to the humans, he swears to have them dragged and humiliated.
  • Only Friend: He says Richter is this.
Aizam, before dying: "Farewell, Richter. You were my only friend all my life..."
  • Stepford Smiler: Aizam suffers from an unknown disease, causing him to cough a lot and faints while working. Even though Richter repeatedly expresses concern, he tells him that nothing's wrong and he doesn't have to worry. It is only during his battle with Daimos, where he's determined to defeat Daimos or die with honour, when he tells Richter the truth.
  • Suicide Mission: Aizam has a disease which is implied to be terminal. Instead of succumbing to it, he wants to die on the battlefield, and has secretly been planning his death under Richter's nose.

    Cindy

Cindy

Erika's childhood friend. She collaborated with Margarete in her first attempts to get Erika out of detainment and reunite with Kazuya, but it only got her captured and tortured. Later on, she sacrificed her life to let Margarete go on with her plan to prevent Erika from being executed.

  • Best Friend: Apart from Margarete and Richter, Cindy is the only one who knows the most about Erika, and they're each other's trusted companions.
  • Childhood Friends: Erika and Cindy knew each other since they were young and would play together. Cindy recounted an incident where Erika saved her from a storm while they were flying, and how her courage inspired her to never back down from danger.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: To allow Margarete's plan to save Erika to continue, Cindy attacks the guards, which results in her being arrested and subsequently executed.
  • Kill the Cutie: Raiza orders Cindy's execution after it's found out that she played a role in staging a diversion to save Erika.
  • Nice Girl: So much so that she's willing to stand up to Raiza and tell her off for her brutality.
  • Satellite Character: Cindy essentially orbits around Erika in terms of plot and story.
  • Shipper on Deck: Like Margarete, Cindy encourages Erika to abandon her guilt over "killing" Kazuya's father and pursue him regardless.

  • Cool Teacher: He mentored Erika in medicine.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He is intentionally neglected medical care after arriving to Earth, as Erika begs Miwa to save him to no avail.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Ourin, Worin or Wallan?
  • Older and Wiser: He's been a mentor to Erika ever since she was young, and Leon requested him to teach her how to become a doctor.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Wallan helps Erika escape the Undersea Castle after her scheduled Execution, but is injured in the way. As him and Erika are intercepted by Miwa, she begs him to save Wallan, only for the cold-hearted General to shout abuse at her and refuse to. Wallan dies, and Erika is distraught, having experienced her first-ever instance of Fantastic Racism from the humans.
  • So Proud of You: He is proud of Erika for saving a lot of lives using her medical knowledge and is sure she'll be a great doctor.

Reference sheet

Formerly the chief advisor of Admiral Leon, he was promoted to General and later King in order to commence the assault to Earth to ensure a home for the Balmians. In truth, he orchestrated the death of Leon and later Isamu to seize power for himself and to rule Balm with an iron fist on his own terms.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Even though he killed her father, he wants to make Erika his bride so he can legitimize his rule as the King of the Baam. Erika plays along with it, but on the day of their wedding she reveals a knife hidden in her clothing and tries to kill him, before declaring that she would rather die than marry a coward like him.
  • All Men Are Perverts: Erika initially assumed him to be a friend of her father's, but he later reveals he has strong romantic feelings for her and wants to marry her.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: As the king of Small Baam, Olban maltreats his people, and according to Kaya, bloody incidents happen every day because of him. He reduced the Baam Peace corps to extinction because they carried King Leon's will for peace, and he also seeks to colonize Earth.
  • Assassination Attempt: Both Erika and Margarete try to take him out in the Grand Finale. Richter does too, and finally kills him after multiple tries.
  • Bad Boss: He barks at an underling for telling him it will take six months for the brainwashing process to Mind Rape all of the Baam in cryostatis, demanding that they speed it up.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He foresaw that someone might try an Assassination Attempt on him while preparing for his wedding, so he prepared a body double (which Richter ended up killing). He has a device connected to his heart monitor that will set Small Baam to crash if it detects it stops beating.
  • Dirty Old Man: Is old enough to be Erika's father (and likely watched her grow up, being Leon's adviser), yet has a crush on her.
  • Dub-Induced Plotline Change:
    • In the original Japanese version, Olban brainwashes the Baam into being mindless slaves, but in the Starbirds dub, he turns them into cyborgs.
    • In the Italian dub, he is a General, not a King.
  • Dub Name Change: Italian: Generalissimo Olban.
  • Evil Laugh: Olban. In the English dub, he laughs at Daimos for being unable to penetrate his space station's shields. Later he does it again when Kazuya gets distracted by Margarete's death and suddenly finds himself under endless barrage from defensive turret.
  • Fat Bastard: He's fat, middle-aged and a greedy, selfish King.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: By organizing the death of Leon, Olban is why Richter tried to get revenge by killing Isamu, thus starting the Earthern-Baamite war.
  • Manipulative Bastard: During Leon's council meeting with Earth's forces to negotiate an emigration, Olban had his right-hand man Georiya poison and kill him while framing the Earthlings for the crime. The death of the Baamite Monarch instigated a war between the two planets, which Olban took advantage of to consolidate his rule.
  • May–December Romance: Olban has the hots for Erika, who's the same age as his nephew.
    Olban: "Doing well, are you?"
Georiya: "Oh, yes! Thank you, my lord, since coming to Earth I haven't so much as caught a cold..."
Olban: "Shut up, you idiot. I haven't the slightest bit of interest in your health problems. I want to know about my flower. The beautiful flower that will lift me up from the bloody day to day struggles."
Georiya: "Ah, that flower! Just a little more patience then I'm sure I can deliver it as soon as possible in all its splendour."
Olban: "I see. Well, be gentle. You are not to ruin that beautiful flower."
Georiya: "Yes, my lord. I'll take your words to heart."
  • Mind Rape: Does this to the Baamites in cryostatis so that they can be mindless underlings to him.
  • Planet Baron: Olban is the authoritative of both Little Baam, and the undersea castle.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Though Richter is a rival to the throne, he doesn't have him killed because he needs his skills in warfare to overtake the Earth.
  • Properly Paranoid: Olban had a body double prepared in case someone attempted to assassinate him the day before his wedding. The double was killed by Richter, and Olban later ordered for his arrest.
  • The Sociopath: Olban is such a sociopathic narcissist that he has a trigger ready to kill off a billion Balmians, even though their population was already reduced to small numbers from their planet exploding and the Earthern-Baamite war. Even as a ruler, he was cruel to the Baamites and maltreated them through brainwashing and purges, while sending Erika and Richter away so that they would be oblivious to his tyranny.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: While Leon was a just ruler, Olban only cares about consolidating his power and quelling oppositions. To make sure that all of Baam is obediant to him, he subjects the cryostatisized Baam to Mind Rape. His main method of dealing with rebels is to kill them/intimidate them into silence.

    Georiya

Georiya (ゲロイヤー)

Voiced by: Kazuya Tatekabe, Paolo Poiret (Italian)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/georiya_daimos.png
Georiya

Olban's trusted henchman, complicit in all his plotting and crimes. In truth, he was the one that had Admiral Leon killed and was the one who killed Isamu and made it look like an accident committed by Richter and Erika. He continues to carry on Olban's orders without any remorse to what happened to his people.

  • Amazing Technicolour Population: Georiya's skin is gray. It looks most unusual since most Baam-seijin have pale skin, though Gurney Halleck also has a similar complexion.
  • Arch-Enemy: Two, in fact.
    • Richter. Both Olban and Georiya were never on his side and merely viewed him as a pawn in their scheme to colonize Earth, due to his skills as a Warrior Prince. After Richter fails, Georiya is sent to replace him as the Undersea Castle's General.
    • For a short while, he's Kazuya's, after replacing Richter. He takes pleasure in tormenting the human over his love for Erika and attempts to paint him as a traitor to his own kind. This ends when Richter kills Georiya to avenge Leon.
  • The Dragon: He is Olban's dragon, though out of fear of him rather than admiration or respect.
  • Hate Sink: From his hideous appearance to his bootlicking of Olban to his unrepetant cruelty; there is not a single good thing about Georiya. When he overtakes the Undersea castle, he becomes even more ruthless than Richter and the killings rise en masse under his reign, and he also coaxes Erika to marry Olban. Not to mention, Georiya is the one who poisoned Leon, starting all the events of this series.
  • Karmic Death: Georiya slaughtered Richter's father; near the Grand Finale the Prince himself slaughters Georiya.
  • Malicious Slander: When Kazuya is summoned to the UN and accused of being a traitor by Miwa because he allegedly had relations with a Baam-seijin woman, Georiya takes this opportunity to bring shame to the Ryuuzaki name, and brings in legions of mecha to terrorize them, claiming he was sent to aid Kazuya. One beatdown by Daimos later proves he was just bluffing.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Georiya has it out for the Jewish people, despite the anime never mentioning Judaism or making any reference to it. In episode 39, he is seen practicing with a bow and arrow, and shoots the arrow right into the heart of two Star of David symbols. The anime never brings this up again or explains why Georiya is anti-semetic in particular when other episodes establish that he wants to eliminate the human race in general.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Georiya stuffed the Undersea Castle with spies so that when Richter would outlive his usefulness, he'd have no loyal allies to come to his aid.
  • Sadist: He views Kazuya as a fool for falling in love with a Baam woman and does everything he can to ensure that Kazuya looks like a traitor to the Earthlings.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Erika and Olban. However, this is mainly because Olban threatened him with consequences if he didn't bring Erika back to him alive.
  • Stupid Evil: Gloats to Richter, a Warrior Prince, that he killed his father. Predictably, it ends with Richter destroying him. He's also quick to believe Raiza when she states she always hated Richter, even though his spies would have told him she's nothing but a complete suck-up.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He has white hair and his actions played a role in driving Richter to suicide.

    Melvi

Melvi (メルビ)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/melvi_daimos.png
Melvi
Reference sheet

Olban's frivolous nephew, usually seen being drunk and using his links with his uncle to order people around. He snatched Erika from Richter using that, but no sooner afterwards, he reveals himself to be actually cunning and good-hearted, opposing his uncle's iron fist and seeking to pave way for peace between Balmians and humans. He's in cahoots with Barandock, who lives in the liberated area. He was unfortunately short-lived, but managed to inherit his will to Erika.

  • The Alcoholic: Results in some Funny moments when even in the most serious of situations, Melvi refuses to put down the liquor. After he rescues Erika from Miwa's base and takes her to the Undersea Castle, he takes a huge swig of the bottle while walking down the stairs as Erika grabs on to him, and takes more when negotiating with Richter about the fate of Erika.
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: Melvi announces to Richter that he cannot execute Erika because he wants to make her his bride, and threatens to ask Olban to make it official between the two should he object. It's actually a front - Melvi is a Shipper on Deck for Erika and Kazuya, because he believes the two can bring peace and stop the war, but he had to convince Richter to let her go somehow.
  • Composite Character: Melvi has characteristics of Benvolio and Count Paris from the original Romeo and Juliet story.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He throws shade at Richter for being an incompetent leader.
Melvi: "If there are rebels in the base, how can he handle conquest of the Earth?"
  • The Ditz: Melvi, being The Gadfly, enjoys presenting himself as this to Richter.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Richter says this about him to Raiza.
Richter: "I had to grow up holding his hand."
  • Handsome Lech: Melvi is built like a Greek statue and has a handsome face, alongside unkempt hair. After he rescues Erika, he remarks to her that she's gotten more beautiful than the last time he saw her and laughs. He also proposes marrying Erika to Richter's anger.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Melvi's right eye is covered by his messy hair, though there are times when he shows the rest of his face.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Melvi or Melbi?
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He's on point when he said Richter fumbled the bag as the Undersea Castle's leader, because he failed to assess the issue of dissenters in it. This becomes especially evident after Georiya overthrows him with the help of the spies he planted in it.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Raiza wants Melvi killed this way, because she fears that if he reports Richter's incompetence to Olban, he will be disgraced and possibly lose his position. Unfortunately, it works.
  • Mr. Fanservice: When he's introduced, we get a lot of close-ups to his arms and pectorals. When he stands up, it's apparent how little clothing he's actually wearing.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Richter remarks that Melvi is child-like and uses his position to get away with not taking his duties seriously. Melvi is well-aware, and milks it for all it's worth. He even lampshades about how he's "The Emperor's frivolous alcoholic nephew".
  • Leg Focus: He has very shapely, thin legs.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Dies in the same episode he's introduced, his last words being that he hopes that in the future, peace will be achieved.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Erika and Kazuya. He teases Erika about her crush after rescuing her from Miwa, laughing when Erika doesn't deny it.
  • Sultry Bangs: Melvi is introduced as a flirtatious Upper-Class Twit who remarks that Erika has gotten prettier since he's last seen her in his drunken state. He's also shameless when it comes to Fanservice.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He's almost the same height as Richter, has wild, untamed dark locks that crown his head and dresses like a Roman gladiator. His carefree nature and Good All Along status also add to this appeal.
  • Totally Radical: Despite being a rank higher than Richter, Melvi doesn't care for speaking formally and addresses everyone around him the same way, regardless of what position they hold.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Here and there. Melvi's hair is styled to some degree, but it's obvious from his lasseiz-faire attitude that he doesn't do much to maintain it.

    Gildo

Gildo

Another of Olban's right hands, who ensures his plans go smoothly. He despises Kazuya and wants to turn Erika into one of his own underlings.

  • Ace Pilot: Gildo flies a mecha that causes significant damage to Daimos and Daimovic, managing the paralyze the giant robot.
  • Blackmail: Gildo threatens to tell Olban about Erika's plan of using a tranquilizer gun containing a microfilm if Erika doesn't work for him.
  • Dressed to Oppress: He is amongst Olban's trusted employees and wears a military suit.
  • Karmic Death: Gildo replaces Erika's tranquilizer gun with a real one, which she unknowingly shoots Kazuya with. Erika uses the same gun to kill him.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Gildo spies on Erika and learns of her plan on using a stun gun on Kazuya when Olban orders her to kill him. While Erika's back is turned, he exchanges the stun gun with a real, loaded gun. Erika has a My God, What Have I Done? moment once she realizes that she put a bullet through Kazuya. She later kills Gildo with the same gun.
  • Replacement Goldfish: For Georiya after his death, being Olban's right hand man. However, he does't make it either.

Utopia

    Barandock

Barandock (バランドーク)

Voiced by: Kenji Utsumi (Japanese), Unknown (Italian)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/barandok_2.png
Barandock

A Balmian leader of Utopia, a sanctioned place in New Zealand where humans and Balmians live together in peace and seeking to spread the philosophy worldwide. He gave Erika shelter and aided Daimos in secret since exposing their presence would put them in peril from both humans and Balmians. Unfortunately his cover was blown, but he also inherited his will to Erika.

  • Fisher King: As said by Erika, when Barandock died, Utopia died with him.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Upon meeting Erika, he has her subjected to rough treatment by his goons, though he later apologizes.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In episode 32, Barandock gets shot by Miwa while begging for peace, and tells the rest of the Baamites and humans of Utopia to evacuate to another shelter he built, while staying in Utopia's base. Though he's already bleeding from his wounds, while witnessing Daimos being trapped by the Baamite's Robeast, he presses a button that causes the base to explode, which manages to free Daimos, at the cost of his own life.

Small Baam

    Small Baam
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/small_balm_daimos.png
Small Balm

The temporary planet of the remaining Balmites in cryostatis, ruled by King Olban.

  • Dub Name Change: It's either referred to "Small Balm" or "Little Balm" in different translations.
  • Futuristic Pyramid: It's an artificial planet that orbits Jupiter and hosts a billion Baam in cryostatis.

    Himley

Himley (ヒムレー)

Voiced by: Ryūsei Nakao (Japanese), Unknown (Italian)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/himley.png
Himley

Balbas' little brother and part of Small Balm's peacekeeping force, which came under fire due to clashing with Olban's megalomaniacal way. When Georiya had his parents (and to an extent, Balbas' too) murdered out of 'treason' by his secret police, Himley was about to report such injustice to Olban, but ended up learning that Olban was behind everything. He managed to relay everything he knew to Richter and his men, but Georiya's men caught up to him and then he died protecting Raiza to make sure Richter lives and save Balm from Olban.

  • Blue Is Heroic: Himley has dark blue hair and clothing, and unlike his brother, who serves a vengeful Alien Prince, he serves the Small Balm's peacekeeping force.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: After Georiya reveals that he planted several spies across the Undersea castle, Raiza and Himley attempt to alert Richter. While they're being chased by Georiya's goons, one of them attempts to shoot Raiza, but Himley covers her with his body and succumbs to his injuries.
  • Spanner in the Works: Olban's plan for world domination started to unravel when it was overheard by Himley, Balbas' little brother, who was about to report about the cruelty of Georiya towards Anti-Olban peace movements, which was ordered by Olban in the first place.
  • You Killed My Father: The final straw for him to turn against Olban was when Georiya had a town massacred for holding rebels. Amongst the victims were his mother and father. Himley then tried to tell Balbas, who didn't believe him at first, but when he found out his little brother was telling the truth, he saw red and swore to make Georiya pay.

    Kaya

Kaya (カイヤ)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaiya_6.png
Kaya

A former employee of Olban's castle who was witnessed Olban's true intentions, and seeks to inform the Baam Resistance on Earth about it.

  • Exact Eavesdropping: It sure is convenient that Olban and his minion were talking about their top-secret evil plan around the same time that Kaya was pushing a trolley outside their room. It's even more convenient that the door was slightly open and none of them noticed him peeking.
  • Expy: Kaya is one of General Dange as they're both aliens who came to Earth and tell the main characters about the cruelty of the alien empires they descended from, before dying afterwards.
  • Gender-Blender Name: At least in the West, "Kaya" is considered a feminine name.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Kaya or Kaiya?
  • Sacrificial Lion: Kaya never stood a chance, as he's badly injured upon landing and can only sparsely speak to Erika about Olban.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Kaya escaped from Small Baam to Utopia, with the intention of informing Barandock of Olban's true intentions. By the time he arrives, Barandock is already dead, and he's out cold from his injuries. He tells them that Olban killed Leon, before dying.
