Kessoku Band

    As a whole

  • Color-Coded Characters: Bocchi is Pink, Nijika is Yellow, Ryo is Blue, and Kita is Red.
  • Four-Philosophy Ensemble:
    • Kita is the straight-up optimist — absurdly energetic, lively and cheerful, constantly ready to live the day, while the others represent slight variations.
    • Hitori is mostly the conflicted, with cynic traits — living, well, an inner conflict to absurd levels, but is also very pessimistic and withdrawn.
    • Ryo is mostly the apathetic, with some cynic traits — aloof, sarcastic and mostly being on her own in her thoughts, yet definitely not above making cynical, tactless, snappy and dismissive comments.
    • Nijika is both the optimist and the realist — strong optimist overall, cheerful and friendly, but more levelheaded and balanced than Kita.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Hitori is melancholic — crippingly insecure, pessimistic, shy and withdrawn.
    • Ryo is phlegmatic — introverted, quiet, yet witty and mischievous despite her aloofness.
    • Kita is sanguine — extroverted, cheerful, friendly and somewhat scatterbrained.
    • Nijika is eclectic — overall a sanguine with phlegmatic traits, being outgoing and cheerful yet also incredibly gentle and accommodating, and more levelheaded than the others.
  • Large Ham: All of them qualify for different reasons.
    • Bocchi has her anxiety attack moments quite often, including the scene where she glitches out.
    • Kita is extroverted to the extreme to the point where she has tropes that usually apply to Magical Girls in her folder, including an aura and a special attack.
    • Ryo is closer to a Cold Ham; whenever a topic that she likes comes up she becomes an unstoppable Motor Mouth and will deliver an Exposition Bomb in her unchanging monotone voice.
    • Nijika is an odd example. She attempts to be the band's MC and engage the audience between sets talking in a loud enthusiastic voice, however due to nerves she tends to come off a little flat.
  • Musical Theme Naming: Each member's surname is taken from that of a member of Asian Kung-Fu Generation, specifically the one whose choice of instrument matches her own. Hitori Gotoh is named after Masafumi Gotoh, Nijika Ijichi is named after Kiyoshi Ijichi, Ryo Yamada is named after Takahiro Yamada, and Ikuyo Kita is named after Kensuke Kita. In the case of Kita and Gotoh, the actual roles are reversed however, as Hitori Gotoh and Kensuke Kita are the lead guitarists for their respective bands, and Ikuyo Kita and Masafumi Gotoh are the rhythm guitarists and vocalists.
  • Nice Girl: They're genuinely kind and pleasant individuals overall, with Ryo at worst falling into Jerk with a Heart of Gold territory.
  • Satellite Family Member: Their families' roles in the story primarily revolve around them.
  • Signature Instrument: Bocchi, Ryo, and Ikuyo each play the guitar, albeit Ryo plays the bass. Nijika plays the drums.
  • Technician Versus Performer: Both guitarists Bocchi and Kita respectively fit, since the former is perfectly skilled with the guitar but has Performance Anxiety, while the latter is a charismatic extrovert born to perform, but is hopeless with instruments at first.

    Hitori "Bocchi" Gotoh

Hitori "Bocchi" Gotoh

Voiced by: Yoshino Aoyama
Played by: Mamo Mamono (stage)
Position: Lead guitarist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hitori_gotoh_character_design_2.png

The main protagonist and lead guitarist. Suffering from a complete lack of social ability since childhood, Hitori learned to play guitar in hopes of becoming famous and popular. She gets roped into joining Kessoku Band, and thus begins her difficult journey to come out of her shell and meet new people.

  • Adaptational Slimness: While Bocchi in the manga is depicted as having a decent bust when she's not wearing her tracksuit, such curves are not seen in the anime—except in the Imagine Spot by Ryo when she is suggesting the band could capitalise on her looks, where she is suddenly depicted in her manga proportions.
  • Ambiguously Gay: She doesn't have any kind of love life and generally seems more interested in making friends than pursuing romance. She does lie to her online fanbase about having a boyfriend who's good at basketball, but nothing indicates that it's more than just inventing a persona rather than an actual interest in guys. Her feelings towards girls, however...
    • Ryo mentions that dalliances with women are part of being a rock star. Bocchi responds that no woman would want to dally with her rather than saying she’s not interested in women.
    • When she sees Kita for the first time, she gets flustered by (in Bocchi's own words) how cute and pretty she is with sparkles all over her lenses.
    • In Chapter 55, she fantasizes about becoming a pro gamer and getting a cosplayer girlfriend.
    • In Chapter 58, when facing the prospect of having to do her grade again, she fantasizes about it being like an Isekai with her being reincarnated as a cool second year student, and her prior knowledge of tests making her popular with big-boobed extroverts. This fantasy of hers continues into the omake, where the cool isekai Bocchi is showing her skills in chick sexing (as in, a poultry farm context) and the aforementioned big-boobed extroverts in her dream swoon and wish Bocchi would sex them too.
  • Animals Hate Her: Zigzagged; while she has no problems interacting with her dog Jimihen, other animals haven't been so kind to her:
    • A flock of black kites violently attack her during the group's outing to Enoshima, and Ryo theorizes it's because they instinctively look down on her for her weakness.
    • The deer she feeds on her visit to Nara Park during her school field trip are more interested in the food than her, mobbing her and leaving her in a crater again.
  • Book Dumb:
    • Her midterm exam scores are extremely low, which is due to her having a hard time understanding things and having no one to explain. Fortunately, with Ikuyo's help, she barely manages to pass the tests.
    • She's not much better the next year; before her midterms, she has to retake her tests several times to avoid repeating the year until she manages to scrape through on her fourth retake.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Her extreme self-deprecation and anxiety make her come off as very odd and woobie-ish to others. However, her musical prowess is genuine and it's allowed her to form an impressive online following as just a solo artist.
  • Byronic Heroine: She has several traits, being idealized in one way and flawed in others, being passionate, intelligent and very talented when it comes to music, is intensely introspective, suffers inner conflict and has both a cynical and an idealistic side. And yes, despite her strange behavior, she's considered attractive in-universe when she wears more flattering clothing. However, it's an example regarding the emotional turbulence of the character, and in spite of her issues and pessimism she's a Nice Girl.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: In chapter 69 of the manga, she becomes drunk upon drinking Amazake, resulting in her struggling to keep her mind in check and getting violent with Ryo, with Kita noting that she's wilder than drunk Hiroi. Given that Amazake has less than 1% alcohol, Nijika vows to make sure Bocchi and Ryo never try the real thing.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Inverted. She takes criticism harder than the other characters expect due to her social anxiety and has breakdowns over them. However, any criticisms she has received from Nijika and the other members of her band have helped her move forward and develop as both a character and a member of the band.
  • The Cassandra: Early in the story, due to her extreme shyness, when she manages to do things involving people those who know her assume she's lying.
    • When Hitori tells her bandmates she managed to sell all her quota of ticketsnote  the girls don't believe it and start feeling bad for giving her such an impossible task for someone without friends.
    • Later Hitori tells her parents that her friends would come over, when Futari tells them Hitori's friends are real people and not imaginary, and her parents still doubt it with Michiyo asking Nijika and Ikuyo if they got paid to pretend they were Hitori's friends.
  • Cheery Pink: Inverted; she has pink hair and frequently wears a pink tracksuit, but she's definitively the least cheerful member of the cast.
  • Chronic Self-Deprecation: She's convinced that due to her social anxiety, she's a worthless human being in any way possible. For example, when she flubbed her practice live with Ryo and Nijika, she viewed herself to be lower than a water flea and spent the rest of the scene inside a garbage bin. This all ignores the fact that she's an incredibly accomplished guitarist with an impressively big fan base.
  • Classical Antihero: She's a kind person at heart, but also extremely introverted, has issues facing pretty much every situation, and has to overcome her insecurities, cowardice, and fear of everything. And yet, she pushes on and is extremely competent at what she's passionate about.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: While she isn't as openly weird as Ryo is (at least not willingly), she still has an eccentric side due to her absurd shyness and her social anxiety causing her to make very strange leaps of logic. When she is put on the spot and tries desperately to do something socially acceptable, she latches onto the most bizarre train of thought and acts on it, causing her to do something borderline insane and seriously creep out everyone present.
  • Compulsive Liar: She has a habit of lying when she's afraid someone might dislike her if they knew any personal details about her, such as nervously claiming to Kikuri that she doesn't actually play guitar and that she was going to sell her guitar at a pawn shop when they first meet. She also frequently posts lies about herself as guitarhero, such as having sung certain songs she covers on her channel with friends at karaoke (she did not have any friends at that point) or having a basketball team ace for a boyfriend (her romantic life remains completely non-existent even after finding friends).
  • Crippling Overspecialization:
    • Hitori is an amazingly skilled guitarist, especially for someone almost entirely self-taught, but her days spent practicing alone in a small closet mean she has no skill when playing in a band with others. It doesn't help that her other issues make it hard for her to play at her best when around other people.
    • In another sense, Hitori is a great musician all-round but suffers academically and socially. She knows this well, which is why she's extremely anxious about her own future, which ties into her strange case of I Just Want to Be Special.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: Often seen doing this at school.
  • The Eeyore: Due to Hitori's awfully low self-esteem, she tends to think the worst of everything. Even the lyrics she writes tend to be downers.
  • Eyes Always Averted: She has problems maintaining eye contact due to social anxiety. This is deconstructed in the beginning: while she is decent playing solo, her initial difficulties maintaining eye contact with the rest of Kessoku means she's out of sync with Ryo and Nijika, causing her to flub her first team getup.
  • Friendless Background: She's spent much of her life having no friends at all. Thankfully, this changes once she joins Kessoku Band.
  • Hidden Buxom: Her jacket does a great job hiding Hitori's decent-sized chest; this is easier to see when she wore the maid outfit for her class maid cafe. Averted in the anime where she’s as flat as a washboard even when wearing said outfit. The Kirara Fantasia collaboration makes it even more noticeable by giving her a form-fitting outfit that makes it very clear she has the biggest bust in the band.
  • Hikkikomori: In some of her Imagine Spots, Hitori is living in her parents' house well into adulthood (in one case, she mentions that Futari is a mother) for one reason or another.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Zigzagged; she wants anything but having to become a typical member of society. However, her reasons for this aren't because she dislikes normality or values alternative lifestyles, but because she realizes she's incapable of being "normal"—she's cripplingly overspecialized in music, a field often associated with alternative lifestyles, and thus deathly afraid that she will fail to be a "typical" member of society and ruin her life, and she's terrified of having to regularly participate in social situations. As a result, she feels that she has no choice but to start making a living off the band life to avoid this.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: She desperately wants friends and some sort of social life, despite her near-crippling social anxiety — it's why she picked up the guitar in the first place. Unfortunately, her awkwardness and her black hole of self-esteem leads to a lot of self-sabotage, as she tends to overact or react, obsess over worst-case scenarios, and believe she's being too "arrogant" for thinking she could ever find common ground with anyone.
  • Iconic Outfit: The pink tracksuit and her blue and yellow hair decorations are defining enough that a blue and yellow set of squares on a square pink background is still enough to identify Bocchi.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Doubles as Stage Name. Since Hitori never had any of these due to her Friendless Background, Ryo decides to call her Bocchi, from the expression "Hitoribocchi" (all alone). Hitori is completely fine with it, despite Nijika thinking it's rather unflattering.
    • When it becomes clear she is the best individual musician in the band, Nijika expands the "Bocchi" nickname to "Bocchi the Rock".
  • The Load: Downplayed, and really only when it comes to social situations, but due to her crippling social anxiety Hitori can't bring herself to initiate a conversation or to voice her wants and desires. As a result, she'll set up elaborate schemes to try and get other people to initiate the conversation instead, essentially pushing the work of interacting onto others.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Bocchi's Imagine Spots, particularly in the anime, are depicted as highly fanciful, with her doing things like exploding, collapsing into dust, or turning into a giant monster. These moments would be easy to dismiss as jokey, stylistic representations of how she perceives things... except for a weirdly large number of times where other characters explicitly acknowledge them as if they actually just happened. Whether we're supposed to take those acknowledgements any more seriously than the scenes themselves is uncertain. The manga author has noted that Bocchi has an inhuman body.
  • Meaningful Name: "Hitori" and "Hitoribocchi" (from her "Bocchi" nickname) usually mean "alone" in Japanese; "Hitorigoto" translates to "talking to oneself". All easily reflect Hitori's social isolation.
  • Ms. Imagination: Her imagination tends to run wild when she gets especially anxious or self-deprecating, to the point where her friends have to snap her out of whatever Imagine Spot she's gotten herself into.
  • Mythical Motifs: She's frequently compared to a Tsuchinoko, and even calls herself one at one point. The tsuchinoko is a creature that's regarded as halfway between a Youkai and a cryptid, which is fitting with her shyness and how she views her social ineptitude as being so rare for a girl her age that she's practically a tsuchinoko herself. This also ties into her nonexistent self-esteem as the tsuchinoko is a reptile-like creature, implying she sees herself as less than human.
  • Nervous Wreck: At the beginning of the series, this girl is a clumsy and stuttering ball of anxiety that can barely say 'hi' to another person. And even after finding herself in a band like she always wanted, she's so afraid of facing the audience that she spends her first performance inside a cardboard box.
  • Nice Girl: Aside from her extremely introverted personality and pessimism, she really is a kind person at heart who wants to be there for her friends. She's also reasonably polite, despite her lack of social skills.
  • No Social Skills: To say Hitori has poor social skills would be an understatement. She's absurdly introverted and pretty much every social interaction is a struggle due to constantly assuming the worst possible outcome will happen, making her anxious to no end. This is not to mention being in Kessoku Band is the first time she socializes with somebody that's not her family, so she's lacking in experience.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: She wears her pink tracksuit so often that she even wears it over her school uniform.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • When Hitori is trying to get into the mindset of an extrovert, she tries acting like Kita for a moment and starts doing stereotypical normie girl stuff. Her parents see this from the doorway, and they are horrified at how out of character she is, genuinely believing their daughter has been a victim of Demonic Possession. A later episode shows they were completely serious about that, since they plastered her room with protective charms.
    • At one point in the manga, after someone's told the girls they're not really serious about Kessoku, the next time Hitori meets up with the others she's channeling Shikimori, showing remarkable confidence as she throws in her vote for participating in a music festival (being who she is, it quickly collapses at the beginning of the next chapter).
  • Performance Anxiety: Not only is she already a Nervous Wreck who's painfully shy, she's terrified of performing in front of a live audience; her first performance with Kessoku Band results in her playing while under a cardboard box since the very idea of playing in front of a crowd stresses her out. She's gradually getting over it, especially when she becomes focused on playing guitar to the best of her ability.
  • The Quiet One: Hitori isn't one to start a conversation and instead talks mostly when specifically asked for her opinion. She tends to speak more through her inner thoughts than out loud.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Inverted in many aspects; despite having pink hair and being a genuinely nice person, she doesn't have most of the trope's typically positive traits, instead being very insecure, pessimistic and riddled with social anxiety.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: When picking out new outfits to wear, she ends up like this. Her lack of fashion sense is justified due to her poor social skills; she once says "Someone with a 'communication disorder' would never enter a clothing store on her own," while reading about fashion likely triggers her "Seishun Complex".
  • Secretly Wealthy: Downplayed. Unbeknownst even to herself, Bocchi's music covers that she uploads online are popular enough to be monetized with ads. Since the account belongs to her family, they secretly activated the monetization and saved the money for her to use when she needs it. She finds out when they give her 300,000 yen to replace her guitar.
  • Sensitive Artist: While Bocchi the Rock! is a series about rockers, Hitori is without much doubt the best individual performer in Kessoku Band, and is also extremely emotionally sensitive.
  • Shared Family Quirks: The Volume 5 extras reveal that Bocchi's grandmother is somehow even more down on herself than Bocchi, to the point she openly contemplates suicide in front of Bocchi because she thinks she won't want to play with an old woman like hercompare. Bocchi loves her, but she does think she can get a bit negative (which is saying something coming from her). Nijika privately guesses the negativity in Bocchi's family skipped a generation.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: According to her bandmates, whenever she wears clothes that actually suit her she is pretty enough that they could sell themselves on her looks alone. Unfortunately (or fortunately for Hitori), her social anxiety and taste in fashion (or the lack thereof) prevent them from actually trying to capitalize on it. In another episode, Niijika and Kita also gush over how adorable she looks in a school uniform.
  • Shrinking Violet: Severely so, to the point that every social interaction she has is presented as a great struggle. Even she says she has a "communication disorder," a term which, while actually broader in definition, is often used as a by-word for more serious cases of social anxiety.compare
  • Signature Headgear: She almost always wears blue and yellow cube-shaped decorations on the side of her head. She's worn them since middle school, and flashbacks show that she wore very similar hair decorations with the same coloring in kindergarten and elementary school.
  • Stage Name: She covers pop music on a YouTube-esque video-sharing website under the name "guitarhero".
  • Tareme Eyes: Highlighting her extremely meek and shy personality.
  • Terrible Artist: Her drawing of Kessoku Band for promotional flyers that she made in episode 6 is not exactly an art masterpiece. Neither is her later attempt at them for an album cover in Chapter 55.
  • Trauma Button:
    • She hates to be reminded of her lack of social life, and being The Eeyore, her reaction is mostly despair. She calls this her "Seishun (Youth) Complex," which is referenced by the title of the anime's opening theme.
    • The mere reminder of sports festivals is especially traumatizing for her; according to her, sports festivals are the bane of introverts everywhere thanks to their constant promotion of class unity and cooperation. In the anime, thinking about sports festivals causes her to go into a breakdown that lasts through the commercial break, which Nijika lampshades.
    • The yearly class change gets her in a bind: to her way of thinking, it forcibly resets your relationships and you have to rebuild them from scratch, making it hell for introverts - but she doesn't have any relationships to be reset, playing into her primary trauma button. She rates it third on the list of traumatic high school events for introverts, and every year she ends up doing something like locking herself in the toilet at home as she loses herself in her anxiety.

    Nijika Ichiji

Nijika Ichiji

Voiced by: Sayumi Suzushiro
Played by: Miki Ohtake (stage)
Position: Drummer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nijika_ijichi_character_design_2.png

The drummer and founder of Kessoku Band, whose older sister Seika owns the STARRY live house where the band typically convenes. Her dream is to make Kessoku Band a success to make herself and her sister proud.

  • All Drummers Are Animals: Inverted: despite being the cheerful and energetic drummer in the band, she's definitely the sanest member, if not outright the most intelligent.
  • All-Loving Hero: She is very sweet, selfless, and forgiving, shows her genuine kindness to everyone she meets, and is always willing to see the best in others.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As kindhearted and sweet as she is, she still gets pissed off at her sister's antics, even calling her a jerk.
  • Big Sister Worship: She's extremely grateful towards her sister, and creates a band to support STARRY out of gratitude. This is because Nijika was raised by her sister since their mother died young and their father is absent.
  • Brutal Honesty: She is honest by nature and has no issue with sharing her opinions with the other members of her band, such as when she bluntly tells Hitori that she sucks at keeping up with her and Ryo when they first performed together. However, she still apologizes if she thinks she goes too far, and does her best to support everyone.
  • The Cutie: She's cute, short and small, and a bright and cheerful individual without a mean bone in her body, providing others with selfless and gentle support.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!:
    • When she starts learning how to drive in the manga, she can't help but see the accelerator and brake as drum pedals, and the steering wheel as a snare hoop.
    • She starts stressing out while the band's recording their first album and finds herself drumming the rhythm of a song while waiting for her cup ramen to be done.
  • Despair Event Horizon: She crosses it during her childhood dealing with the sudden passing of her mom all alone to the point of not wanting to go to school anymore.
  • Deuteragonist: Not only is Nijika The Heart of the band and Bocchi's First Friend, she's also the second most often-appearing character and the one whose phrase gives the Title Drop.
  • Dope Slap: She gives them quite frequently to Ryo in the manga.
  • Dumb and Drummer: Inverted; she's the drummer but is probably the smartest in her group.
  • Dumb Blonde: Inverted, since she's a blonde and yet the Only Sane Woman here.
  • Expressive Hair: Her triangle shaped antenna is quite lively indeed. It's as if it's got a mind of its own (or maybe it does, since Nijika is able to divine test answers from the way her hair points). Kita eventually learns how to understand it, and can tell what Nijika is thinking just by observing its wiggles.
  • First Friend: Is this to Hitori. While initially she was just looking for a guitarist for the band out of necessity, since recruiting her she keeps supporting Bocchi, being patient with her breakdowns, helping her overcome her social anxiety, and making sure she is included.
  • Foil: To her best friend Ryo. Nijika is outgoing, emotionally expressive and selflessly supportive, but also levelheaded and responsible, Ryo is lazy, Book Dumb, aloof, apathetic and asks for money to be lent to her.
  • Genki Girl: Nijika is a Nice Girl who likes to meet new people and is outgoing, bright, friendly, cheerful, kind, and energetic, though also a more levelheaded example of the trope, who is capable of being mature and serious when needed, and especially compared to Kita, she lacks the extreme energy and extraversion the latter has.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: The fact she's kindhearted, selfless and all-loving by nature does clearly not mean she's an idiot by any means. She's clearly the most responsible, levelheaded and reliable member in the band, and arguably the most intelligent as well.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A very kindhearted individual, who is the only blonde of the band and happens to be The Heart of the same. The color is apparently natural, since her sister and mother share it.
  • The Heart: She is the driving force for the band and the glue that keeps them together with her natural kindness. She was the one who recruited Bocchi when their only guitarist at the time had run off. She makes sure the band moves forward and supports Bocchi when she is discouraged.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She describes herself to Kita as being academically average, though it's implied that she's at least fairly good.
  • Iconic Item: She frequently wears a scarf tied up in a bow around her neck, especially when performing.
  • Idiot Hair: Inverted Trope. She has a notable triangle-shaped strand of hair sticking out of the top of her head that's been compared to a Dorito chip by fans, though she's the most sensible and put-together of her bandmates.
  • The Leader: It was thanks to her efforts that Kessoku Band was able to form.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother died when Nijika was young, and her father was never home; this made her and her sister very close and gave her a deep personal connection to STARRY.
  • Ms. Exposition: Due to her being involved in the operation of STARRY, she's often the person to provide expositions on the business side of the live music scene to the reader/audience.
  • Nice Girl: She is a kind and honest girl who deeply cares for her bandmates, keeps them together and selflessly supports everyone. Furthermore, her decision to form a band was essentially out of gratitude to her older sister for caring for her.
  • Nobody Loves the Bassist: A recurring gag involving her is her dislike of bassists—oddly, not for the typical joke reasons of them being untalented or unneeded, but rather for her believing them to be scumbags. It certainly doesn't help that both Ryo and Kikuri fit her beliefs perfectly.
  • Only Friend: When she and Ryo are first introduced, Ryo states outright that Nijika is the only friend she has.
  • Only Sane Woman: In a band with Bocchi, Ryo, and Kita she is exceedingly well-balanced. Nijika is usually the one who reins everyone in and keeps things under control.
  • Secret-Keeper: She realizes that Hitori is "guitarhero" when she hears her play at her full potential at the end of Episode 8, but promises not to tell anyone.
  • Shared Family Quirks: While in a huff at Seika not allowing them to perform, she reveals her sister sleeps with stuffed animals. It turns out later on that she does the exact same thing.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: She's the shortest member of the band and also the most levelheaded of them.
  • The Smart Girl: While she may come across as somewhat naive due to her incredibly sweet and loving nature, she's probably the most intelligent member among the main cast, and the most levelheaded Only Sane Woman for sure.
  • Tareme Eyes: Which highlight her sweet, soft and cheerful personality.
  • The Team Normal: As the only one in her group who, while reasonably outgoing, is not on one of the extreme ends of the Introvert-Extrovert scale, Nijika stands out as the most normal in that respect.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Red eyes.
  • Thinking Tic: Apparently, she starts bouncing around when solving academic problems, and when she comes across a problem she can't solve, she lets her ahoge's movements solve it for her.
  • Tsundere: Heavily downplayed, but she has shades of a Type B towards her sister and Ryo. She's possibly the nicest character in the series, but Seika's pride and tsundere mannerisms sometimes bring out her more annoyed and snappy side. Similarly, Ryo's antics are a surefire way to rile Nijika up, and the manga has her frequently call Ryo an idiot or wrestle her into submission.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Chapter 3 of Vol. 1 reveals she's not good at singing.

    Ryō Yamada

Ryō Yamada

Voiced by: Saku Mizuno
Played by: Karin Osanai (stage)
Position: Bassist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryo_yamada_character_design_2_4.png

The bassist and the other founding member of Kessoku Band. Asocial, aloof, and bearing an androgynous charm, she has great passion for music, and no sense for money.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: A somewhat different example since she has Boyish Short Hair and an androgynous charm, but she's attractive, aloof, and the tallest band member. Kita has a huge crush on her.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Given her aloof and individualistic nature, she gets annoyed by her parents' very doting antics.
  • Ambiguously Gay: She lists "dalliances with women" as part of the rock star lifestyle traits one must partake in, but she hasn't actually shown any romantic attraction to anyone and seems indifferent to Kita's obvious crush on her.
  • Berserk Button: In the manga, insulting bass seems to be this to her, as seen by her forcing Futari to listen to bass after Futari said that bass (unlike guitar) sounds plain. Later, when Bocchi is buying a new guitar, Ryo is admiring a particular bass. Kita mentions that the bass looks like Bocchi when she's shocked, prompting Ryo to forcefully rub Kita's head.
  • Bifauxnen: Ryo has Boyish Short Hair, tends to wear gender-neutral outfits outside of school, and looks very handsome in a suit, which is best seen during the maid cafe when she dresses up as a butler and has loads of people wanting to order from her. This makes Kita basically fawn over her at all times, and she admits outright that she fell for Ryo due to the latter's "unisex" looks.
  • Book Dumb: Her midterm results were even worse than Hitori's, due to Ryo being the kind of person that crams everything at the last moment, though she is able to get great results if she puts in effort... which usually means she will forget how to do things like playing the bass.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Fitting her androgynous looks.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: For all her quirks, Ryo has near-encyclopedic musical knowledge and is quite happy to share it with her friends. She also rarely messes up playing the bass and is capable of telling by ear that Nijika rushed her intro in the first episode.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: In chapter 69 of the manga, she's dumb enough to believe that Amazake is Sake, resulting in her becoming a violent drunk and picking a fight with a drunk Bocchi.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: It's not clear what's up with her, but she's rather odd, lacking common sense, and comes across as completely tactless, or just plain weird (e.g. when short on cash for food, she states she has no choice but to eat leaves to stay fed; cue her walking into the venue actually eating leaves off of a branch).
  • The Comically Serious: Her usually stoic demeanor tends to contrast with her odd thought process and mischievous sense of humor.
  • Creative Differences: She left her previous band because she was dissatisfied with the more commercial direction they wanted to take.invoked
  • Cuckoosnarker: While she's often shown to have a rather odd thought process, she's also surprisingly sarcastic at times. She has a snappy, if not outright tactless, comment for everything, and she almost always delivers it in a deadpan way.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Kita's crush on her boyish charm is outright declared in Kita's introduction.
  • Female Rockers Play Bass: She is a pretty, aloof female bass player and very keen on rock music (even leaving her first band given they were taking a more pop-oriented approach). Though in the series itself it's averted since all the band is comprised of female rockers.
  • Friendless Background: Of a more subtle case than Hitori's case. She is asocial, which means she's more comfortable with being alone than Hitori.
  • Foil: To all 3 of her bandmates:
    • Hitori - Both Hitori and Ryo are introverts with very few friends. However, while Hitori has a major phobia about being around people, despite her desire to be more outgoing, Ryo actively chooses to be an aloof loner, fitting her cool image, and doesn't look for friends by nature. This is lampshaded when Hitori, Nijika and Ryo introduce themselves in Episode 2: upon hearing Nijika is Ryo's Only Friend, Hitori is a bit excited because Ryo is "just like me", complete with a shoujo-style Imagine Spot... which immediately crumbles as Nijika mentions some of Ryo's pastimes, and Hitori realizes Ryo likes to be alone.
    • Nijika - while her best friend is outgoing, emotionally expressive and selflessly supportive, Ryo is aloof, apathetic and asks for money to be lent to her.
    • Kita - obviously, Kita is the most extroverted and energetic member in the group, and a Fiery Redhead, where Ryo is, again, an apathetic Aloof Dark-Haired Girl and Deadpan Snarker.
  • The Gadfly: She has a tendency to mess with her bandmates for the hell of it. When Bocchi asks Ryo for her opinion about some lyrics, she expresses awe... at Bocchi's practice signatures on another page. Then, when Nijika asks her for T-shirt designs, she sends back an elaborate slideshow full of images of food that segues into a question about what to have for dinner.
  • Genius Ditz: Downplayed; she's not an idiot per se, but she's both Money Dumb (since she grew up rich) and a Book Dumb Ridiculous Procrastinator, and despite coming across as cool, aloof and almost emotionless, she's definitely an asocial, lazy, apathetic and quirky cloudcuckoolander with no common sense. That said, she's very passionate and cultured about rock music, and a gifted musician.
  • Greed: One instance is her suggesting they sell band bracelets for 500 yen a piece note  and the annual membership fee for their fan club would be 10,000 yen. Another time was when after finishing assisting Bocchi's class with their maid cafe, she demands to be paid for her work. In the same episode, she considers commodifying Bocchi since she was cute looking.
  • Hipster: When convinced she's drunk in Chapter 69, she starts complaining about how young people nowadays treat music, wondering what's up with "going viral" and "Tick Tock", and grumbling about them making "weird remixes" and turning songs into background music for going to dances. Kita has no idea what she's talking about, but Nijika comments this is how she always is.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: She constantly makes bizarre excuses in order to not partake in social activities. This includes things such as her grandma's condition taking a turn for the worse (for the 10th time this year apparently, her grandmother is absolutely fine), needing to take her dog to the vet (she has never owned a pet), or her father being in a car crash and now suffering from amnesia. Nijika sees through all of these immediately, but still lets her go even though she cannot understand why Ryo just cannot say it straight.
  • Idle Rich: She's very lazy and apathetic, often lacks willingness to help even Nijika at work, and usually avoids social activities.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: The anime's website and the Crunchyroll subs use "Ryo," while Yen Press's translation uses "Ryou."
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her quiet nature, she certainly likes to push people's buttons and is rather tactless. Examples include repeating Kita's first name because she knows she hates it, calling Nijika's MC'ing garbage to her face, and having a little too much fun at Bocchi's expense while she's visiting her at her classroom's maid cafe for the School Festival. Though, as Bocchi sees by interacting with her, Ryo has a soft spot for people who are earnest and encourages Bocchi to embrace what makes her feel true to herself rather than sell out for others' sake.
    • Also, she's kind of a mooch, very lazy and apathetic, even coming across as selfish for her uncooperative nature. That said, she will help her friends in the end.
  • Money Dumb: Ryo comes from a rich family but she spends most of her allowance on music equipment, leaving her to scrounge for daily needs. We see her trying to use her probably expensive bass to pay for a scenic escalator ticket, and she quickly tries to double it down for 2 bass guitars she had on her for some reason. Bocchi ends up stopping her and loans her the money. Ryo promises her on her honor that she will pay her back, and Bocchi reminds her that she hasn't paid her back for the last time, or the time before that. Nijika promises Bocchi to cut the amount owed from Ryo's next paycheck, and Ryo is devastated because she probably was planning on wasting it all on music stuff immediately.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Although her family is wealthy, she's really bad with money and owes Bocchi for various favors about as often as Hiroi. It gets to the point where she has to start eating random weeds, as she can't afford to eat out.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: A more comedic example, as aside from being an ordinary human in a mundane setting, she fits many of the traits; she has blue hair, is asocial and emotionally stunted, is considered to be very weird by others, and speaks in a monotonous tone of voice.
  • Ridiculous Procrastinator: She's very lazy, and the type of person who does things at the last possible moment; that's why she's also Book Dumb.
  • Rock is Authentic, Pop is Shallow: She's very keen on Rock music, and left her previous band owing to the latter moving to a more commercial pop-oriented approach, implying she believes in this trope.
  • The Slacker: Very lazy and apathetic, doesn't like working and socializing, and is a Ridiculous Procrastinator.
  • The Stoic: Incredibly calm and inexpressive, coming across as almost emotionless. She has a mischievous sense of humor, though.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: She's still stoic and aloof later on, but it becomes more evident that she's ultimately a kind person through her tactless comments becoming less frequent.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Highlighting her stoic and sarcastic personality.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: While calling Ryo "serious" would be a stretch since she's an asocial cloudcuckoolander with no common sense, she somewhat comes across as this when compared to her overbearingly doting parents.

    Ikuyo Kita

Ikuyo Kita

Voiced by: Ikumi Hasegawa
Played by: Mirai Ohmori (stage)
Positions: Vocalist, secondary guitarist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ikuyo_kita_character_design_2.png

Hitori's schoolmate at Shuka High School. Incredibly extroverted and outgoing, at least compared to her bandmates. She was the band's original guitarist, having joined mostly out of her crush on Ryō, but eventually ghosted them for fear of letting them down with her subpar guitar skills. After an accidental encounter with her old bandmates, she is welcomed back, where she settles on being the vocalist as well as secondary guitarist.

  • All-Loving Hero: While in the band itself she may not have the role of The Heart, which belongs to Nijika, she also counts as this, being a Nice Girl by nature, very friendly to everyone, selfless and helpful, as seen in her taking care of Bocchi and the latter's shortcomings.
  • The Charmer: Kita is ridiculously charismatic, capable of befriending people with ease. This is best seen in episode 11 where she, along with Nijika and Ryo, sell out the maid cafe that they're volunteering for.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed. She is fine most of the time but she does get jealous at Ryo praising or seemingly reading the mind of Hitori, resulting in her trying to impress Ryo so she gets praised as well.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: It's downplayed, but later chapters reveal that while Kita likes hanging out with her school friends she ultimately feels like her life is missing something and that she's just drifting through life. Her admiration for Ryo stems from her pursuing something outside the norm and the reason she joined the band was that she hoped she could find the drive to do the same.
  • The Ditz: Downplayed; she isn't that stupid and she's good at schoolwork to the point of helping the Book Dumb Bocchi study for exams, but she can be hopeless when it comes to music:
    • When she meets Hitori for the first time, she confides in Hitori that playing the guitar is just "beyond her," and she doesn't exaggerate—she picks up Hitori's guitar and explains that she'd thought playing the guitar was just about strumming, and the neck and the frets were just for decoration. She even thinks major and minor chords are essentially baseball jargon. This is why when she returns to Kessoku Band, she has to learn the guitar from Hitori.
Hitori: Her non-comprehension is on a whole other level!
    • She used the allowance she saved up for two years on a "guitar" that only made a low "boom boom" sound. When questioned if she bought a bass, she confidently says that she is not that ignorant because she knows bass guitars have only 4 strings. The girls inform her immediately that some bass guitars have 6 strings, and she did indeed blow all her money on a 6-string bass.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Kita hates being referred to as Ikuyo since it makes her name sound like a pun (Kita Ikuyo can be read as "I'm here! Let's go!"). It can cause her to have a Heroic BSoD along the line of Bocchi.
  • Extreme Doormat: Downplayed. While Kita doesn't fit the usual stereotype of a doormat, thanks to her energy and confidence, she's fundamentally the passive type; she does things mainly because of other people, not because she necessarily likes doing them, usually going along with whatever's most popular. Even when she breaks from that, she still follows someone else, such as joining Kessoku Band because of Ryo. She is capable of committing to something beyond the short-term, but needs support when things start getting difficult. It becomes a big thing in Volume 6 when she's latched onto Bocchi as her role model, and decides she doesn't want to go to university because she wants to catch up to Bocchi, and doesn't want to waste time at university when Bocchi's not planning on going either.
  • The Face: Out of necessity. In a band where half of the members—the socially-anxious Hitori and the asocial Ryō—are manifestly not in any way socially inclined, she's the one who plays this role. However, this is also why she isn't The Heart; Hitori and Ryō are not always comfortable with her extraversion (see Good Hurts Evil). She's also the closest thing Kessoku Band has to a public relations manager, being the only one to consistently post on social media.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her fear of disappointing others. She can't tell Nijika and Ryo she can't play, so runs away. She can't tell her parents about Kessoku Band, so when she reveals she's choosing the band over university, it blows up into an argument that makes her run away from home.
  • Fiery Redhead: Her bright red hair couples well with her extremely extroverted and outgoing personality.
  • Foil:
    • As one can guess, she is basically the exact opposite of Hitori, being an extremely outgoing and friendly person who lives to meet new people and make friends. Though, funnily enough, she and Hitori do have a few things in common, like them both dealing with the stress of disappointing others by either running away or curling into a fetal position, and having dramatic reactions when things get too much for them (although Kita's are within human capability while Hitori's break local reality).
    • To Ryo as well; you can bet that in any given situation their reactions will be the exact opposite of each other. Ryo is an introverted loner who prefers to spend time by herself taking things slow and easy, while Kita is an extreme extrovert who loves spending time with friends and doing challenges just for the sake of trying.
  • Genki Girl: Even more than Nijika, who is still quieter than her, being extremely extroverted and energetic - making Hitori and Ryo somewhat uncomfortable at times, draining them as they are extremely lacking in extraversion and energy, respectively. Kita is very much a party person, constantly active, full of energy and loves meeting new people every day.
  • Good Hurts Evil: Parodied with her "Kit-aura", with "good" and "evil" replaced with extroversion and introversion. She gains a rainbow-colored halo when she emits immense amounts of positive go-getter energy, and any introverts or indoorsy types must avert their eyes as it burns their retinas. It even works on jaded people, as being exposed to her Kit-aura figuratively turns Nijika's sister into ash.
  • Has a Type: Besides Ryo's cool, aloof image, she finds her androgyny to be a very attractive trait.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Reveals in the manga that, alongside her crush on Ryo, she was motivated to join Kessoku Band by her desire to be special in some way, because there's a part of her that feels her normie life is dull, and she was jealous of Ryo for walking her own offbeat path. She doesn't feel she's special yet, even after joining, but she still wants to try and change herself.
  • Large Ham: Incredibly extroverted, energetic and expressive, she's a 100% foil to The Stoic Ryo. Not surprisingly, she's The Face of Kessoku Band.
  • Last-Name Basis: Not only is she referred to by her last name (except by Ryo and her parents), but she also generally calls Hitori "Gotoh-san". She also calls Nijika "Ijichi-sempai". She starts calling Hitori by her given name in episode 12.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: She is very feminine and has a crush on Ryo. And possibly Bocchi.
  • Loving a Shadow: She initially joined the band due to her crush on Ryo, viewing her as a mysterious and aloof senpai, and is baffled when she realizes that Ryo is actually just an asocial weirdo as they hang out more. After finding out what Ryo is really like, she actively tries to repress the realization in hopes that it will preserve her image of Ryo being cool and thoughtful.
  • Nice Girl: Though her extraversion can overwhelm more withdrawn characters like Bocchi and Ryo, she's undeniably cheerful, kind and friendly, with a natural charisma. She's also often shown to be very supportive, caring and loyal to Bocchi.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: She briefly spots this upon hearing Nijika calling for Bocchi when the runaway guitarist tries to leave.
  • One Degree of Separation: She and Bocchi's classmate Sasaki went to the same middle school.
  • Plucky Girl: She's typically a wellspring of wholesomeness, to the point she's depicted having a figurative "Kit-aura", representing the times she accidentally goes overboard into being Sickeningly Sweet.
  • Punny Name: Lampshaded by the girl herself, who points out that her name (in Japanese name order) sounds awfully like "I'm here, let's go!", to her embarrassment.
  • Queer Establishing Moment: She's established right in her first episode to have joined Kessoku Band for her huge crush on Ryo, indicating that she likes girls. Furthermore, she's also the only one of her band who was not affected by the overly affectionate couple in episode 9.
  • The Runaway:
    • At first she abandoned Kessoku Band due to fear of disappointing her band for not knowing to play the guitar. Upon being caught, she apologizes and reconciles with the band.
    • She reveals to the group that she ran away from home in chapter 64, explaining that her parents didn't support her choice of fully committing to the band instead of choosing to pursue a career.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: At the beginning, she abandons Kessoku Band when they were to do their first concert at Starry's due to fear of disappointing them for not knowing to play the guitar, forcing Nijika to look for a last-minute replacement and take Hitori to fill her place. She attempted to do this again when Bocchi reveals she is going to introduce her to the Kessoku Band without knowing her backstory but is caught by Nijika before she could do anything.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Her outgoing energy was inherited from her dad, much to the chagrin of her mother.
  • Singing Voice Dissonance: Normally she speaks in a pretty cheery, high-pitched voice. When singing, though, her voice drops to a lower and smoother tone.
  • The Team Normal: In a different sense than Nijika, who is the most balanced and levelheaded. Kita is the most normal individual for her fashion-conscious nature and her being surprisingly passive. She's far more oriented towards social activities than individual interests.
  • Tsurime Eyes: While she has these eyes, she isn't harsh; instead, they indicate her very upbeat Genki Girl personality.
  • Valley Girl:
    • Downplayed example, but when contrasted to the likes of Hitori or Ryo, or even the more balanced Nijika, she comes off as an absolute trend following, selfie-taking, fashion conscious, extroverted normie.
    • It turns out she exaggerates her particular stereotype in the manga - she absolutely believes that not following along with what others are doing means death, even if she doesn't like it, and throws a tantrum when she doesn't have anything to post on social media.
  • What Are Records?: Upon discovering a floppy disc, she wonders what it is and whether it'll go viral.
  • Written Sound Effect: She manifests one that says "キタ~ン" Translation above her head whenever she begins emitting her signature "Kit-aura".

Starry

    As a whole

    Seika Ichiji

Seika Ichiji

Voiced by: Maaya Uchida
Played by: Misato Kawauchi (stage)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seika_5.png
Nijika's older sister and manager of Live House STARRY in the Shimokitazawa area in Tokyo, where Kessoku Band typically convenes.
  • Aloof Big Sister:
    • Played with. On the exterior she can seem a little cold and her blunt responses may seem a little off-putting. In reality she’s actually just stoic, and cares a great deal about her sister and her band mates.
    • She played this straight when she was 21, keeping her family, including Nijika, at arm's length; it was her mother's death that pushed Seika towards becoming the Cool Big Sis she is now.
  • Aloof Leader, Affable Subordinate: She's the fairly aloof and stone-faced leader of STARRY, while her subordinate PA-san is a friendly Perpetual Smiler.
  • Cool Big Sis:
    • Very much so. Being a manager of a live house, she is calm, firm, and exudes coolness. While they do bicker occasionally, her younger sister Nijika looks up to her a great deal, especially since Seika practically raised Nijika after their mother died.
    • Although they aren’t related she also sticks up for Bocchi quite a bit. When she found out that Hiroi and Ryo had borrowed money from her and had yet to pay her back, she forces them to pay for her immediately.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Played With; she's not as openly sweet as her sister Nijika and can be strict. That said, she's still a reasonably kind and caring - if rather aloof - individual, so she ultimately fits.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: After Seika turns down Nijika's request to host Kessoku again, Nijika runs off while accusing Seika of still needing to sleep with a stuffed animal despite being in her thirties. In the manga, Seika retorts that she's only 29.
  • Idiot Hair: She's got a triangular strand sticking out of the top of her head just like her younger sister. Also like her sister, she doesn't fit the "idiot" part, being a generally responsible adult.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Downplayed. She can be a little bit too strict and frank, and even Nijika gets annoyed at times with her pride and tsundere antics. That said, she is a reasonably nice person at the end of the day, and is a kind and caring Cool Big Sis at heart.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Her insisting that Kessoku Band pass an audition before they play again is harsh, but perfectly fair and is for the good of the band. Nijika gets angry enough to run off, but once she's calmed down, she admits that Seika is right, but didn't have to be "mean" about it.
  • Jerkass Realization: After her mother's death, Seika realized how badly she'd been neglecting Nijika and made an effort to change.
  • Meaningful Name: The "Sei" in her name means "star." It's easy to assume that she named Starry after herself, but this is not the case; it's because live houses are places where countless bands- as many as there are stars in the sky- go to perform.
  • The Only Way They Will Learn: Takes this approach to Kessoku Band. After their first gig, she firmly says that their performance sucked, they were only allowed to play that one time as a favor, and they will not be welcome to play at her club unless they pass an audition, even if they have the money to cover the quota. While this may seem cold, she actually sees huge potential in the girls, and is tough with them in order for them to grow by their own effort.
  • Parting-Words Regret: The last time she talked with her mom before passing away she replied to her mom's suggestion to invite Nijika to one of her live shows with "If I feel like it". Seika now just wonders why she couldn't have just told her "yes" back then.
  • Perpetual Frowner: The reason Bocchi is so intimidated by her is because she’s often seen with a mean scowl.
  • Practically Different Generations: Seika is 29 (30 as of Chapter 29, 31 as of Chapters 63-64) while Nijika is a high schooler. She says they're 12 years apart, separated by a zodiac cycle, in her narration for the Volume 5 extra chapter.
  • Promotion to Parent: As their mother died and their father is never around, Seika essentially became Nijika's caretaker.
  • Secret Test: The audition counts, as she wanted to see if the girls were willing to put in the effort to actually improve. Thanks to their hard effort they passed.
  • Significant Birth Date: December 24th, Christmas Eve.
  • Stepford Smiler: She initially grieves her mother's passing this way, devoting entirely to the band to avert her eyes to the reality that her mom has passed away.
  • The Stoic: In contrast with her Genki Girl younger sister, Seika is a lot more stone-faced and has never raised her voice.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Red eyes, like Nijika.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: Insists that Nijika call her "Manager" while working at the live house.
  • Tsundere: Nijika describes her as this, especially heavy on the tsuntsun. After the girls pass their audition PA-san notes that Seika had an empty time slot that she seemed to have reserved for them, and she of course denies it.
    • When Bocchi tries to buy her a gift she curtly replies that she doesn’t want anything; the moment Bocchi's out of earshot she gives a small smile and calls her a sweet girl.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Which highlight her very serious and stoic personality, as well as her tsundere qualities. Contrasts with the Tareme Eyes of both her more cheerful and energetic sister Nijika and the other young adult PA-san, who is more easygoing and friendly.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She acts annoyed whenver Hiroi shows up yet never bothers kicking her out, and the two often hang out when they go to support Bocchi. Nijika also mentions that Hiroi often stops by to use their shower, which we can only assume is because Seika allows her to.
  • Womanchild: Downplayed; while she acts like a responsible adult, her sister Nijika angrily reveals to everyone that despite being in her late twenties, she still sleeps with stuffed animals to everyone when she refuses to allow Kessoku Band to perform after their terrible first concert. She eventually gets shown with a stuffed animal at home in Chapter 55.

    "PA-san"

"PA-san"

Voiced by: Kotori Koiwai
Played by: Haruna Hori (stage)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pa_san.jpg
The public address system engineer of STARRY.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Subverted, she's a fairly calm, dark-haired and attractive young woman, but is actually a very friendly Perky Goth Nice Girl.
  • Aloof Leader, Affable Subordinate: She's significantly more cheerful and friendly than her boss.
  • Creepy Good: Being a Perky Goth she looks like kind of a creep, but she's a good person.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Black hair and dressed in black, but very kind.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 12 of the spinoff is about her trying not to let on about her VTuber life.
  • Everybody Calls Him "Barkeep": She's only referred to by her occupation, i.e. the PA engineer. Her real name hasn't been mentioned yet. It gets lampshaded in Chapter 33 as Nijika and Kita try and fail to remember her name, plunging the poor woman into despair.
  • Hidden Buxom: Most shots of PA-san in the anime and manga depict her as having a relatively small to moderate chest, but a special illustration for volume 6 shows that her chest is actually very big and possibly the biggest in the series.
  • Hime Cut: Part of her goth look, which plays into her calm attitude.
  • Nice Girl: She's kind, easygoing and friendly, despite her appearance.
  • The Night Owl: The reason she dropped out of high school was because she could never wake up early and failed too many classes. It's also the reason why she has her current night job.
  • Perky Goth: She has dark hair, piercings, and her looks scare Bocchi the first time she appears. It is quickly revealed that she's a nice and easygoing girl.
  • Perpetual Smiler: She is usually seen smiling in the background.
  • The Quiet One: Downplayed. She's sweet, expressive and genuinely cheerful and optimistic, but isn't very talkative. This may be due to her submission towards her boss Seika.
  • Tareme Eyes: Though not as pronounced as the other females with them, she still has this type of eyes, highlighting her kind and soft personality, as well as her contrast with the more aloof and stone-faced Seika, the other young adult in the series.
  • Virtual YouTuber: An in-universe example; she does it as an occasional side-thing under the Stage Name Alto Otogi, having originally taken it up so she could laze around and play games. She keeps it hidden from the people around her because she wants to keep up her mysterious persona.

    Nene Ooyama

Nene Ooyama

Bocchi's junior at Shuka High School, who later becomes a part-time worker at STARRY.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has a minor one after hearing she also has to buy about 20,000 yen worth of required equipment on top of buying a guitar, with even a 60,000 yen guitar being several years of her allowance already.
  • Hot-Blooded: Nene manages the impressive feat of being even more energetic than Kita. She's a very enthusiastic girl with No Indoor Voice, and it's evident she carried that passion into being a Passionate Sports Girl when she played basketball. Bocchi and Ryo can't handle dealing with her, and Nijika gets annoyed that she doesn't stop to think, with Kita the only one able to get along easily with her for any length of time.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Nene likes standing out, and wants to find something where she can be the star, because she doesn't get much of a chance to do so in sports due to her height.
  • The Nicknamer: Bocchi is "Hippie-senpai" (due to the clothes she was wearing the first time Nene saw her), Kita is "Selfie-senpai", and Ryo is "Silent-senpai".
  • No Indoor Voice: You can practically hear how loud she is even in the manga. Nijika lampshades this at one point, commenting that even her movements are loud.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Sports is her hobby, and she played basketball for three years in middle school.

    Erena "Ere" Hinata

Erena "Ere" Hinata

A one-time Idol Singer who becomes a part-time worker at STARRY.
  • Fangirl: She stans all kinds of bands, especially Kessoku Band, with Ryo being her favorite member to the point she writes self-insert fics with herself and Ryo. Even the normally unflappable Ryo has difficulty dealing with her.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: She's a downplayed example, as she started playing a bass just so she could be different from the normal fans.
  • Idol Singer: A former member of the underground idol group Angel's Cuticle under the Stage Name Raphael, which broke up after one of their members started university, went wild with her personal life, and had it blow up online.
  • Implausible Deniability: Claims at one point she met up with Nijika and Ryo due to a chain of accidents, except the events she's describing are very much not accidents, like accidentally using their social media to accidentally figure out their location, then going there for a stroll and accidentally finding them. After hearing her out, Nijika wonders what "accident" means to her.
  • Third-Person Person: Talks like this as part of her cutesy behavior, referring to herself as Ere.

SICK HACK

    As a whole
  • Ascended Extra: All of them have bigger roles in Kikuri's spinoff.
  • Goroawase Number: 4989 can be read "shi-ku-ha-ku" - i.e., SICK HACK. Some of their fans have the number on t-shirts.
  • Old Shame: The time Kikuri tried to perform without sake, involving a painful dad joke and an even more painful silence from the audience. It's implied it happened before Eliza joined.

    Kikuri Hiroi

Kikuri Hiroi

Voiced by: Sayaka Senbongi
Played by: Rei Tsukikawa (stage)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/493374.jpg
Bassist and vocalist of SICK HACK, a well-regarded Psychedelic Rock band playing from the FOLT live house in Shinjuku, as well as one of Hitori's first few friends outside Kessoku Band. She is carefree, reckless, and overtly fond of alcohol.
  • The Alcoholic: She's introduced suffering from a hangover, and the moment she alleviates herself of its symptoms, she goes right back to drinking cheap cartons of sake like it's water.
  • Animal Motifs: She will occasionally sprout cat ears on top of her head to evoke the image of a stray cat that keeps coming back; notably, Seika picks her up by the back of her jacket's collar akin to picking up a cat by the scruff of the neck. This shows that she is both mischievious but surprisingly loyal, as she sticks around whether people want her there or not.
  • Anti-Role Model:
    • Played for Laughs. When she describes her "Happiness Spiral" to Bocchi she turns to the audience and encourages kids to try it at home.
    • Lampshaded in Chapter 15 of the spinoff, where Nijika declares Kessoku Band and SIDEROS could someday... not become like her.
  • Attention Whore: She certainly likes to be the center of attention and loves making her performances, whether she influences others positively or not.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Her severe alcohol dependency and general recklessness cause her to be universally looked down upon by the musical world. Her antics often get her band in trouble, whether it's by her mooching of fans, drunkenly accosting the audience, or wrecking their equipment and the entire venue by extension. However, her bass playing skills are the real deal, and her wild ways have made her an amazing performer and gained her a ton of fans. Even the people who normally want her to get her act together have to admit that her lifestyle is pretty "rock".
  • Cool Big Sis:
    • Bocchi refers to her as nee-san (which is how one addresses their older sister in Japanese, but can also be used for an unrelated older woman) and since their first meeting Hiroi has done all she can to support her. She pushes Bocchi to open up and face her fears, and opens up to her about how she was just as shy when she was her age. It’s her sound advice and laidback nature that helps Bocchi let loose and stop fearing her audience, resulting in her playing a lot better in front of a crowd.
    • She attempts to invoke this on Nijika when she asks her to tell Seika not to pick on her. Nijika, who often has to deal with her visiting, gives her a literal cold shoulder and tells her to leave.
    • She attempts to invoke this again during the school festival. While Bocchi's friends and family are cheering for her, Kikuri loudly and obnoxiously waves for Bocchi's attention, when it is clear Bocchi is ignoring her she calls out that it's Kikuri Onee-San. She later quietly praises Bocchi's improvised solo, showing that despite her being a total mess, she is genuinely proud of how far she has come.
    • Yoyoko has a similar nee-san relationship with her, and Yoyoko's jealousy over what she sees as Hiroi spending more time with Kessoku Band is one of the reasons for her rivalry with them.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Despite spending most of the time completely drunk she is still a great musician that earned her reputation.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Purple eyes and purple hair. Notably, she's the only named character in the anime to have this (the only other notable characters to have this are Bocchi's unnamed fans).
  • Cute Little Fangs: Her teeth are jagged like a shark's. When her whole row of upper teeth isn't in view, she has one that sticks out instead.
  • Don't Try This at Home: Inverted. She enourages kids to drink their troubles away even though that's very obviously a bad idea.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Subverted; when Hiroi is Kessoku Band's ride to Enoshima, the girls act as if they're about to die, clearly expecting her to still be drunk. Instead they end up seeing her sober for the first time and she gets them there and back without incident.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Her main reason for drinking is that as long as she is in her "Happiness Spiral" she will not be tormented by her many anxieties for the future or her numerous regrets for the past.
  • Drunken Master: As shown in Episode 6, her constant drinking doesn't stop her from playing well — she's able to improvise the chords to Kessoku Band's original song effortlessly, despite having never seen their first concert at Starry.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Despite her drinking and chaotic nature she takes Bocchi under her wing and acts as a mentor for when it comes to performing.
  • The Eeyore: Yes, believe it or not. In the rare occasions when she is forced to go sober she is even gloomier than Bocchi. She does nothing but mull over things like the Japanese pension system collapse, declining birth rate, rural depopulation, global warming, or even the possibility of her apartment having ghosts. She hates this version of her, which is why she needs a constant supply of alcohol to keep her usual carefree personality.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Hiroi is very open and unashamed about her alcoholism, but she'd never drive drunk, even staying dry for two entire days before a trip.
  • Eyes Always Shut: This is her "drunk" expression, which is also her default expression, due to her being plastered 24/7.
  • Fangirl: She used to be one for Seika's old band. To her disappointment, the band broke up just when she joined the light music club at their university.
  • Fantastically Indifferent: The extras for Volume 1 of her spinoff reveal that her apartment's haunted by vengeful spirits, but she's usually too drunk to be scared.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Apart from Bocchi, Ryo and Yoyoko, most of the main cast are at worst annoyed with her and at best tolerate her. Even Nijika doesn’t bother giving her the time of day because she’s annoyed at her drunken antics. This continues into her spinoff; Eliza mainly tolerates her, while Shima tries to get her under control.
  • Functional Addict: For a given definition of "functional", at least. Despite spending almost every waking moment utterly smashed, she doesn't lose any of her skill with her guitar (and might be better at it drunk), and remains in enough control of her faculties to make it to the end of each day. Other than her unwelcome antics both on-and-offstage and noisiness, her drunk state is most peoples' normal.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Loves to have fun and give it her all, both off and on stage, usually fueled by alcohol. Luckily her drinking habit doesn't seem to negatively affect her musical ability.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She doesn't like herself when she's not drunk, describing her sober self as serious and boring.
  • Hidden Depths: She might act a fool, but Hiroi is actually quite self-aware: she knows her drinking stems from her anxiety of the future. Also, despite being a mooch, she empathizes with Bocchi quite a bit having been similarly anxious when she was younger, Bocchi noticeably had an easier time befriending and opening up to her than most new people she met.
  • Horrible Housing: She lives in a 52-years old run-down apartment with no bath. She has to rely on others (her bandmates, Yoyoko, the Ijichi sisters and, most likely if she has enough money, public bath houses) to be able to do some personal hygiene.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Hiroi introduces herself to Kessoku Band as a genius bassist and bass lover, then immediately laments forgetting her bass at a party the night before and not recalling which party it was. It is lampshaded by Kita who calls out her instant self-contradiction.
  • Impractical Musical Instrument Skills: While not for showmanship like the trope usually ascribes, Kikuri has an idiosyncratic style of playing bass with a shamisen pick.
  • Insistent Terminology: When describing her relationship with alcohol, she describes a cycle of substance addiction word for word, but insists that it's her "Happiness Spiral" and recommends viewers to try it at home.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's a loud and drunken mooch whose antics are pretty obnoxious. However, despite her social indecency, she still does have a good heart and does her best to support her friends, especially Bocchi.
  • Large Ham: Understandably, being so eccentric and also The Alcoholic, her antics are often dramatic, bombastic and over-the-top.
  • Last-Name Basis: Almost everyone who refers to her by name calls her by her surname. The only named character that calls her Kikuri is Eliza.
  • Lead Bassist: Hiroi is not only the only member of SICK HACK to be really established as a character, she's also their lead singer and seems to be the frontman.
  • Liquid Courage: She reveals to Bocchi that she was incredibly nervous before her very first performance, so she downed a bottle's worth of alcohol to calm her nerves. After her first performance was successful, she started doing it before every performance, which is why she's The Alcoholic by the present day.
    • She also serves as a Deconstruction of this trope. Despite the fact that alcohol helps her overcome her social barrier, relying exclusively on getting drunk for every situation is not a healthy method of doing this. When she's sober (like in chapter 69) she's as bad as Hitori in socialization, showing that her solution hasn't solved her anxiety, it's just helping her ignore it and kept her from improving herself.
  • Mr. Vice Guy: Hiroi is messy, obnoxious with her drunken antics, loud and a mooch, but when push comes to shove she always shows up to support Bocchi, even going as far as to go to see her show during a severe rainstorm. Despite being annoyed by her antics, her friends stick with her.
  • Mythical Motifs: She's associated with Oni through the "Onikoro" brand sake she frequently drinks, as well as her "Super Ultra Shuten Doji EX" bass guitar, named after the famous oni Shuten Douji. Fittingly, her Hard-Drinking Party Girl attitude does bring to mind how Oni are classically portrayed as drunken troublemakers.
  • Older Than They Look: She somehow looks just as young as, if not younger than, Bocchi despite being 25 and her alcoholism.
  • Perpetual Poverty: While she earns a good amount of money thanks to her band, she still loses it due to constantly breaking things during or after concerts.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Combined with Eyes Always Shut and Drunken Glow to give her a goofy easygoing look befitting her personality as a fun-loving party girl.
  • Scary Teeth: She's drawn almost exclusively with rows of sharp teeth, indicating her rowdy and wild nature.
  • Shadow Archetype: It's remarked quite frequently that she was a lot like Bocchi growing up, being a musical prodigy who was also stressed-out and socially-anxious. Kikuri represents something Bocchi could easily become in the future, if she took the easy way out of dealing with her problems. In fact, we see in chapter 69 of the manga that when she isn't drunk, she acts a lot like Bocchi does, while Kita comments Bocchi is wilder than Hiroi when drunk.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: In episode 10 of the anime, the Ichiji sisters call her out with Nijika claiming that she often uses their shower and Seika bluntly telling her to pay rent, implying that she has crashed at their place more often than they would like.

The tomboyish but well-mannered drummer of SICK HACK.

    Eliza Shimizu

Eliza Shimizu

Voiced by: Sally Amaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eliza_shimizu.png

The guitarist of SICK HACK. Originally lived in England, but moved to Japan three years ago.

  • But Not Too Foreign: While not stated outright, the fact that she has a multi-ethnic name and originally lived in England suggests that she's of both British and Japanese descent.
  • Fangirl: Of VTuber Alto Otogi, though she doesn't know it's actually PA-san.
  • Gratuitous English: Occasionally peppers her Japanese with English phrases, such as "Oh no". In the anime, her English is better pronounced than in most cases thanks to being voiced by the bilingual Sally Amaki.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: In Kikuri's spin-off manga she says that the reason they should go to the beach is because every Kirara heroine should do summer stuff in their manga, and the readers will love the fanservice of seeing the SICK HACK members in swimsuits. Of course Eliza had just spent weeks holed inside writing and drawing Doujinshi so this is probably just her playful personality at work, and Kikuri even asks what a "Kirara heroine" is or who are these readers she's talking about.
  • Miko: She isn't an official miko, but she cosplays as one to help new years celebrations at a temple in Shima's hometown. Of course the temple is buddhist, not shinto, so it shouldn't even have mikos. Despite this she is a huge hit with the locals.
  • Mirror Character: Serves as one to Nijika, being a blonde, energetic, nice girl. That being said she is also a little ditzy and a bit of a Fangirl for a lot of Japanese culture much like Ryo is for music.
  • Nice Girl: Eliza is a kind, cheerful and lively young woman whose first instinct when she sees the Kessoku girls is to ask them to be friends.
  • Nom De Plume: She releases her doujinshi under the name Sushi Zamurai.
  • Occidental Otaku: She only came to Japan in the first place to attend Comiket (going so far as to learn Japanese for it), and happily shows off her keychains of anime characters to Kessoku Band when she introduces herself. She also says what she really wants is to be part of an anime-song cover band. Kikuri's spinoff reveals her hobby is creating Doujinshi.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: She's an Anglo-Japanese woman who has long blonde hair and blue eyes.
  • Significant Birth Date: February 14th, Valentine's Day.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Shima's Tomboy.

SIDEROS

    As a whole
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: A socially awkward leader and vocalist, a Gamer Chick, a Sweet Baker, and an unsettling goth girl, who together form a popular, talented band that's on the rise.
  • Undying Loyalty: While they sometimes grumble and complain, the others admire Yoyoko for her straightforward honesty about her ambitions, her trust in them, and her charisma and leadership skills, and are fully prepared to support her in her goals.

    Yoyoko Ohtsuki

Yoyoko Ohtsuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3063.png

Leader of the metal band SIDEROS, where she is the vocalist and guitarist.

  • Attention Whore: One of Yoyoko's defining traits is her wish to be the one in the spotlight. She's particularly obsessed with how many followers she has on social media. (It's something of a sore spot for her that her mentos and cola vids don't get anywhere near the views of her bandmates' vids; an omake shows her being more popular in Gin and her bandmates' vids than in her own.)
  • Distinctive Appearances: Brown hair with red ends.
  • Fangirl: She's a big fan of Kikuri, and the fact that her idol praises Kessoku Band is the main reason for her rivalry. Kikuri's not above taking advantage to mooch off of her.
  • The Insomniac: Apparently she gets so nervous before lives that she doesn't sleep for three days, the origin of her signature glare.
  • No Social Skills: She's awkward at getting along with people, not helped by her ego, which resulted in her having no friends, as well as her band members constantly switching out until they stabilized with the current lineup.
  • The Rival: Starts seeing herself as Kessoku Band's rival, especially Bocchi's.
  • Signature Headgear: Her floppy black cap.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Pink eyes.
  • Tsundere: Her pride and awkwardness get in the way of admitting her real feelings, even to herself.
  • Unknown Rival: While the band does see her as a musical rival, it isn't nearly as personal as it is for Yoyoko.
  • Wrong Assumption: Yoyoko first hears about Bocchi and Kessoku Band from Kikuri in her spinoff, and interprets Kikuri's description to mean Bocchi's someone similar to herself - too similar, to the point she starts feeling threatened.
  • You Never Did That for Me: When she learns in the spinoff that Kikuri played a street performance with Bocchi to help her sell the tickets for Kessoku Band's show, she immediately complains that she never got to do a street live with her and demands that they do one. In the end, they just go to a karaoke bar.

    Akubi Hasegawa

Akubi Hasegawa

SIDEROS's drummer, a forthright Gamer Chick.
  • Brutal Honesty: Has no issue speaking her mind, particularly when it comes to Yoyoko's foibles.
  • Cool Mask: Typically seen with a black face mask.
  • The Face: The most socially functional of SIDEROS, and the one who gets along easiest with others.
  • Fangirl: Of Kessoku Band.
  • Gamer Chick: Streams herself gaming.

    Fuuko Honjo

Fuuko Honjo

SIDEROS's other guitarist, a cheerful, friendly girl who likes baking and baked goods.
  • Sweet Baker: Cheerful and streams herself baking.
  • Sweet Tooth: Gravitates to cake shops, sweets buffets, etc.

    Yuyu Uchida

Yuyu Uchida

SIDEROS's bassist, a goth girl who's obsessed with the supernatural.
  • Delicate and Sickly: She takes iron supplements, apparently because she has anemia.
  • Goth: She dresses in Elegant Gothic Lolita style, has a penchant for describing ordinary things in disturbing fashion, has a pair of creepy dolls she calls Lucifer and Beelzebub-chan which she says are cursed, and has a particular interest in the supernatural, streaming videos on the subject.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: It's ambiguous whether she can actually sense the unseen or she's just being chuunibyou.
  • Not-So-Phony Psychic: In chapter 74 right as she is describing her new OhTube hustle where she will exorcise spirits and the way for viewers to participate is by coming to a live show with SIDEROS, she gets a genuine premonition. She senses a ghost of a guitarist with a grudge against the world, with messy hair and a worn out pink track suit, and starts panicking how it will soon be near. Of course, this turns out to be just Bocchi who was emitting enough gloomy energy from outside the building.
  • Third-Person Person: Refers to herself as Yuyu.

Klimt's Night

    Ame

Ame

One half of the musical duo Klimt's Night, serving as their composer and songwriter. In person, she's an extremely shy and withdrawn girl.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She's reclusive, withdrawn, and struggles to communicate with others, but nevertheless she's an accomplished songwriter and composer, drawing on multiple genres.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Keeps her eyes hidden under her hair and hood.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Used symbolically; she wears a pair around her neck.
  • Hikikomori: She can venture out if she has to, but she admires Bocchi for being able to go outside regularly.
  • Nervous Wreck: She basically can't cope with any form of attention or social interaction.
  • No Social Skills: Severe social anxiety makes it very difficult for her to interact with others.
  • Shrinking Violet: On the most extreme end of the scale, to the point where she can barely communicate with others, whether through speaking or writing, and keeps her face hidden.
  • Shrouded in Myth: She's a complete mystery to the public, with no info on her out there, including her age and name.

The Gotoh family

    Hitori's parents

Michiyo and Naoki Gotoh

Voiced by: Rie Suegara (Michiyo) and Junji Majima (Naoki)
Played by: Mizuki Saito (Michiyo) and Miki Sawada (Naoki) (stage)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bocchi_parents.png
Respectively, Hitori's mother and father.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Naoki has black hair in the manga, as opposed to his purple hair in the anime. By Volume 6, it's been changed to match the anime.
  • Doting Parent: Both of them in their own way tend to dote on Hitori. While her mother is very gentle and sincere when it comes to encouraging her, her father tends to be quite excited and is often shown with Ocular Gushers whenever his children achieve something.
    • This is especially made clear in episode 12/chapter 21, when Hitori apologizes for breaking the guitar she's been borrowing for the last three years. Instead of being upset, Naoki merely explains that those things happen, before giving her the 300 thousand yen she had earned from uploading guitar covers to the family's youtube channel, not realizing that the whole family shared that account, all while telling her how proud he is that she's amassed such a big following... before berating her for lying to her fans about having a basketball ace for a boyfriend.
  • The Faceless: Naoki has his face obscured most of the time; while sometimes his mouth is shown, his eyes remain unseen.
  • Good Parents: Both of Hitori's parents are shown to be nothing but supportive of her. This extends to Futari as well; one of the first things their father does when he buys a video camera is shoot an adorable home movie of his youngest daughter playing with their dog. It's really telling that even in her darkest delusions about her future, Hitori can't imagine her parents not taking care of her.
  • Keet: In a stark contrast to Hitori, her father is a very cheerful guy.
  • Nice Guy: They are overall very kind and pleasant people as seen in their interactions with Hitori's friends, and are very caring despite some Innocently Insensitive moments (which are understandable, given that Hitori's social anxiety hits absurd levels).
  • Older Than They Look: Subverted. Michiyo thinks she can disguise herself as a high school student, but people can tell she's only pretending.
  • Parents as People: While clearly well-meaning, a lot of the good-natured teasing they do to Hitori (such as telling Nijika and Kita they'd thought she'd been imagining or hallucinating having friends coming over, or had rented them from a service) exacerbates her social anxiety.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Michiyo shares Hitori's pink hair and fits the trope better than Hitori does, being more cheerful and outgoing.
  • Speaking Like Totally Teen: Michiyo has a desire to appear as a "forever 17 year old", thus in the manga she often tries to sound hip by speaking in 90's teen slang which just sounds out of place, until she learns some actual modern slang which makes her sound even more absurdly out of place.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Hitori and Futari both strongly resemble their mother.

    Futari Gotoh

Futari Gotoh

Played by: Nanami Oka and Arisa Tsukui (stage)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/futari.jpg
Hitori's younger sister, who is more social than her.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: She fits the role as she often remarks on Bocchi's lack of social life, much to the latter's annoyance.
  • Brutal Honesty: Futari has a habit of being extremely blunt about her older sister's lack of any social life, much to the latter's despair. Justified since she's only five years old and is mostly just being Innocently Insensitive due to having no filter.
  • Cheerful Child: Five-year-old Futari is very outgoing and cheerful, in stark contrast to her older sister.
  • Family Theme Naming: Hitori means "one person/alone" in Japanese, so naturally her sister is called Futari which means "two people".
  • Food as Bribe: She only leaves Bocchi alone with her friends when her sister allows her to have ice cream in order to get her away.
  • Meaningful Name: Futari's name means "two people", and she's far more extroverted than her socially awkward and anxious older sister, Hitori.
  • Nice Girl: Though she has no filters being a child, she's a very nice kid who loves her family and cares a lot about her sister.
  • Practically Different Generations: Futari is ten years younger than her older sister.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Futari shares Hitori's pink hair and fits the trope better than Hitori does, being more cheerful and outgoing.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: She is cheerful and extroverted in contrast to her older sister, who is pessimistic and introverted.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Futari strongly resembles her sister and mother.

Other Characters

    The two Bocchi fans

The two Bocchi fans

Voiced by: Kana Ichinose (Fan 1) and Miyuri Shimabukuro (Fan 2)
Played by: Yajirimaon (Fan 1) and Hikaru Sonoda (Fan 2) (stage)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bocchi_fans.png Fan no.2 (left) and Fan no. 1 (right)
Two girls who attended Bocchi's street concert and quickly became her fans.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Both of them have brown hair and brown eyes, with Fan 1 having a slightly darker shade of both compared to Fan 2.
  • Fangirl: They quickly become one to Bocchi.
  • No Name Given: Neither of them has had their name revealed. They are simply known as Fan no. 1 (Fan 1-Go) and Fan no. 2 (Fan 2-Go). They even simply introduce themselves this way in chapter 31.
  • Those Two Girls: They're always seen together.
  • Undying Loyalty: Since becoming fans of Bocchi, the duo has been there to support Bocchi every time she does a concert. They are even present in The Cameo Kessoku Band has in Slow Loop's episode 10.

    Gin-chan

Ginjirou "Gin-chan" Yoshida

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Miura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ginjirou_bocchi.png

The 37-year-old manager of FOLT, the live house where SICK HACK typically performs. He might look intimidating, but he's surprisingly friendly beneath his rough exterior. His favorite genre is punk rock.

  • Ambiguously Gay: His orientation is never discussed. However he acts rather effeminately, does makeup videos for the internet, and is a regular at a bar filled with male couples.
  • Exhausted Eyebags: He's drawn with dark lines under his eyes.
  • Face of a Thug: He manages to frighten Nijika with only a brief glance in her direction, but he's actually a kind and energetic man who's eager to introduce himself to Kessoku Band when they first arrive. Hiroi calls him a "middle-aged softie".
  • Keet: He might be 37, but it certainly doesn't show in his exuberant personality.
  • Nice Guy: He's kind, friendly and cheerful, despite having an intimidating look in his eyes.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: His videos on Shinjuku FOLT's channel focus on makeup and fashion.
  • Significant Birth Date: January 1st, New Year's Day.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Kikuri punches and breaks a wall after her show (and particularly after Bocchi invites her to her school festival performance), he informs her, in the sweetest voice, that she's liable 10 000 yen for damages. The manga has him Say It with Hearts.

    Mrs. Ijichi

Mrs. Ijichi

Seika and Nijika's mother, who died in a car accident prior to the start of the series.

  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Prior to her death, she was a good mom who was supportive of Seika's dreams and consoled Nijika when she was neglected by her sister, with both sisters fondly remembering her.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has the same blonde hair as her daughters and is a kind and loving mother.
  • Last Request: Prior to her unexpected death, she asked Seika to be there for her, not ignore her and be a good sister to Nijika.
  • Motherly Side Plait: She had her hair styled in the infamous dead mom hair before her passing.
  • No Name Given: Her given name is unknown.
  • Open-Minded Parent: She's remarkably supportive of Seika playing in a band even if she's often not home, but gently asks her to be there for Nijika.
  • Posthumous Character: Died in a car pileup eight years prior to the start of the series.

    Kita's parents

Kita's parents

Kita's parents.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: Kita's mom is prone to letting her imagination run wild, such as mashing together what she's heard about Hitori and Ryo to conclude that Hitori is a dangerous punk wanting to take away her daughter. She has a reputation in the family for misunderstandings.
  • Education Mama: Kita's mom wants her daughter to pursue a more serious career, and thinks her dedication to the band is because someone's trying to take advantage of her.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: Kuruyo's against Kita devoting herself to the band instead of pursuing a career, thinking her daughter's reasons are superficial.
  • Knight Templar Parent: Used for a gag. Kuruyo has barbed wire and a bear trap set up for "Gotoh-san".
  • Locked Out of the Loop: A large part of the drama in Kita's arc in Volume 6 is because she never had a proper conversation with her parents about Kessoku Band (including it being an all-girl group), as they were more focused on her studying for a government job. When Kita makes it clear she's serious about the band and doesn't want to go to university, she gets into an argument with her mother and ends up storming out of the house, leaving her mother to try and figure out what's going on from the little bits of info she can piece together.
  • Open-Minded Parent: While Kita's mom is reluctant, Kita's dad is willing to see what a Kessoku Band show is like (admittedly because he wants his wife and daughter to sort things out so he can eat Japanese food again).
  • Parents as People: Kita thinks her mother's strict, but in truth she's just worried about her daughter's future, and has a tsundere streak.
  • Punny Name: Just like her daughter Ikuyo, Kuruyo's name combined with their last name sounds like a sentence, in her case "I'm here, here I go".
  • Tsundere: Kita's mom claims that Kita doesn't need to come back home and that she doesn't care, yet she keeps making her favorite foods.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Like her daughter, Kita's mom has these, but for her they're closer to the traditional use, representing her role as a fantasy-forbidding mother.
