Destroyers (DD)

  • You Are Number 6: Starting with Z23 onward, Kriegsmarine destroyers were only ever identified with their construction designator. The trope is used in the "humanizing robot" style; most of them are content with going by their numeric names.

Z 1 Leberecht Maass (Retrofit)
Commander, your applause! All your problems will be gone if you let me, Z1, handle them!

The personification of the German destroyer Leberecht Maass, the first dedicated torpedo boat destroyer built in Germany after World War I.

  • Bifauxnen: Way, way more so than all the other early Z destroyers. Takamori gives her a very "boyish" voice, her hair is shorter than others, her body language on her chibi sprite is boyish, and aside from her rudder-heels, she's got a very boyish outfit (complete with a kind of Badass Longcoat). Her Rebellious Top Student skin cranks it up even more, as she's just outright wearing what is usually a boy's school uniform.
  • Covert Pervert: While she doesn't say much about the matter, but her oath line basically has her mention being the Eve to your Adam with all the implications that entails. This often surprises people who don't know of it ahead of time.
  • Glass Cannon: Post-retrofit, Maas gets a boost to her Torpedo stat that makes it the highest out of any non-Sakura destroyer. Adding on her skill's 50% damage boost to crits and Bismarck's crit rate increase, Maas can now punch some serious holes in enemy ships.
  • Lethal Joke Character: Courtesy of Maass' skill. Maass is, by herself, just a kind of middling destroyer (much like her real-life counterpart) - her HP pool is decent, and she's got a high Torpedo score for an IB destroyer, but it's still a joke compared to comparable Sakura DDs and she's got a Firepower score equal to theirs (which is to say, crap). But her skill provides a huge 40% buff!... to the Evasion and Firepower of Z destroyers. So all in all, she's worthless, right? Well, she wasn't great... until Divergent Chessboard (or its rerun in CN/JP) came out, and with it, Z25 and the Z23 retrofit. The 1936A DDs like 23, you see, have higher Firepower than normal, at around 100... and then 23's retro bumped hers to 154. Which then gets multiplied by 1.4. This means that paired with Maass, Z23 gains a comparable FP stat to Admiral Hipper while also using the highest-raw-DPS guns in the whole game. In short, once you retrofit Z23, Maass can turn her into a tornado of destruction, and Z46 (or Z25, Z26 or Z2 otherwise) work well to complete the set. Outside of this, though, Maass remains fairly hard to use, at least until you retrofit her (and even then, her buff is most useful asset).
  • Rare Random Drop: She was available at random in the Light construction gacha but has been phased out of it. She drops from 5-1, 8-2 and 9-4 as well as certain event stages.
    • In China and Japan, she has become drop only, forcing one to farm for her if they don't want to use Bullins to limit break or refit.
  • Super Mode: Gets one after her retrofit. Her Destruction Mode-Prototype skill has a high chance for every 20 seconds to release a powerful barrage and temporary increase her own critical damage, as well as provide temporary damage reduction against aerial attacks for the entire vanguard fleet.
  • Support Party Member: Her main skill increases the firepower and evasion of all Z-class ships in the party. It's worth noting this is one of the biggest support buffs in the whole game and goes up to a whopping forty percent at max level. And she has some powerful sisters in their own right with Z23 (especially with refit) and Z46 being the most notable examples. There's also the secondary effect of her refit skill.

Z2 Georg Thiele

Artist: Mkiiiiii33

Voiced by: Maki Kawase

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/z2.png
I am Z2, Georg Thiele, awaiting your orders. However, if your orders are flawed, please allow me to reconsider them. May our relationship be productive.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: While she's usually fairly sharp, she... evidently did not do much research on, or grasp at the moment, how Sakura (read: Japanese) cuisine works in "Swirling Cherry Blossoms".
Thiele: Apparently, you're supposed to eat it with some of this paste spread on it. I believe it's called "wasabi"? I coated the sashimi in an even layer of it, as I believe you're supposed to.
Mikasa: Err, you've put far too much on it.
Suruga: ...Please, Thiele, stop! Don't eat it!
  • A Day in the Limelight: She is, naturally, a significant character in her debut event, "Stars Over The Fjord". She has also taken the role of Eugen's attendant/sidekick, as seen during "Swirling Cherry Blossoms" and "Aurora Noctis".
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: She snarks on Z1 all the time, but she owns a doll she named Z1 and proudly carries it everywhere. It's actually easy to mistake it for a prosthetic hand, since she never seems to take it off, but she indicates that it is indeed a hand puppet. Which she also uses to fire shells with.
  • Beleaguered Assistant:
    • She ends up in this role in a number of the later Ironblood-focused events; she serves as Eugen's aide, and while Eugen is unquestionably competent, she has to put up with Eugen's eccentricities, including her teasing personality. For a perpetual Straight Man like Thiele, this is especially rough.
"So, would the great and omniscient Prinz Eugen care to tell me what happens now that they've found out about our fleet projections?"
    • She's also very worried she'll end up as this to you, and lets you know early on that she isn't going to be tolerant of much chicanery on your part.
  • Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: She seems to have this relationship with Z1 overall, despite what she sometimes says; it's clear she loves her (idiot) sister and would be upset if something happened to her. (And in full context, this is tragic.)
  • Deadpan Snarker: Ohh boy. She can make her British aristocrat friends proud.
"Commander, please try not to be as reckless as Lebe. It would be annoying to have to knock you out, and I don't particularly like getting physical with a superior officer."
"Among all actions that take bravery, this would, in my honest opinion, be the worst kind." note
[concerning the events of "Swirling Cherry Blossoms"] "Thanks to a certain Prinz Inebriated, I didn't get the full details."
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She begins standoffish and rather professional, but warms up to you significantly in her higher affection lines.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Sees herself as the Responsible to Z1's almost insufferable (to Z2's eyes) Foolish.
  • Gathering Steam: After every 10th firing of her main guns, Z2's second skill increases her loading stat slightly and barrage damage significantly for the rest of the sortie, stacks up to 4 times to a 20% increase in loading and a whopping 160% increase in barrage damage.
  • Hidden Buxom: Downplayed but her base skin does make her seem physically younger than she is with a swimsuit sketch and a dress skin showing that she has a decent bustline.
  • More Dakka: Her skill kit emphasizes her barrage rather heavily with one actually buffing its damage in particular. It's borderline Crippling Overspecialization as her normal performance is solid if unremarkable.
  • The Stoic: Thiele is unbelievably stoic. She almost never changes her vocal tone or speech pattern (and even comments on this in an affection line) and more than half of her player lines use the same expression, which can give you the impression her portrait isn't even animated; moreover, the alternate expressions she does have are much more subtle than most. Only when you oath her does her mask of stoicism start to crack... a bit.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Thanks to her experiences with Z1, she's worried this is the case overall, and makes sure the Commander knows she isn't going to be sparing of them if they turn out to be dumb (including mentioning, completely deadpan, that she'll knock you out if you end up being "reckless" like Z1 is).

    The Type 1936-class

Class-wide Tropes

  • Com Mons: An utterly bizarre example. Künne, Galster & Heidkamp are ridiculously common drops from the maps of "Divergent Chessboard" and two of them are obtained as part of the reward structure... and they only appear on DC maps. Galster and Heidkamp are, in fact, the only Common ships not normally available in either the standard gacha or as a drop on permanently-available story maps. Prior to Divergent Chessboard entering the War Archives on various servers, this made them less "common" than many Super Rare vessels. Lüdemann is slightly different due to her being a login reward.
    • Post-archiving, they aren't too uncommon in light construction.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • Their visual design is from a much earlier stage of Azur Lane's development overall; they're really just little girls in shorts or skirts, tube tops, and knock-off Schutzstaffel coats and vague naval hats, and feature none of the decoration, detailing or inferred complex lighting that came to define the look of Azur Lane's shipgirls. None of them, aside from maybe Galster, feature real details on their rigging (or what counts for "rigging") that reflect their ships of origin. Notably, none of the girls have ever gotten any skins, and after doing the art for the four, their artist 桜庭光 ("Loveindoghikaru") has seemingly not been asked back to do more work for the game. As a result, aside from a few very rare event or character story appearances, the modern game post-2017 and post-global launch seems to largely attempt to pretend they don't exist. The one time Z19 and Z21 did appear in a late 2019 loading screen, they were virtually unrecognizable (they're in the lower left, behind Tirpitz).
    • Additionally, their characterization is incredibly thin, even by the standards of early Azur Lane. This particular class entry spent a long time commented out simply because no one bothered to try and trope the girls out for lack of meaningful tropes to apply to them individually because of the sheer thinness of their characters. All the girls have basically one character trait (Künne is crushing on the Commander, Galster is A Sports Girl™, Heidkamp is arrogant, etc) and everything's built around that.
  • Junk Rare: For better or worse. All of the girls to date are on the lower end of the ship rarity system (despite being far less common than many actual SR vessels), they all have the same AP-damage-increasing skill (which, without any other skill assisting it, is a very questionable skill for a Destroyer) and their stats are generally poor (certainly their Firepower is too low to make much use of the buff aura Maass provides). And not a single one has a retrofit. Put together, they're considered some of the game's worst destroyers, despite how comparatively difficult they are to get.
  • Moveset Clone: Far beyond even the Königsberg sisters detailed below. All four of them have the exact same "Piercing Shells" skill which increases AP shell damage by 15-25%, level depending, and have no other skills to differentiate them. They also all use the exact same All-Out Assault barrage. They are also, aside from Luck and a slight adjustment upward to account for rarity for Lüdemann & Künne, completely identical statistically (and naturally, Lüdemann & Künne are as exactly identical to each other as Galster & Heidkamp are). And unlike the K sisters, none of the 1936 girls have a retrofit to give them any kind of variety.

Nice to meet you, I'm Z18! I'm the girl whose smile will reach everyone's hearts~

  • Idol Singer: She basically wants to be one, at any rate, and is themed around trying to be one who uses "smiles" to make people feel better. It's entirely genuine, too, which as she points out makes her a rather odd fit for the modern, miltarist IB.

Z19 Hermann Künne

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/z19.png
Z19 Hermann Künne, reporting for duty! Commander, I'm prepared to fight until the very end!

  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • There's a bit more here than even the others have. Many later "younger-seeming" characters would more follow the "Unicorn model" of not actually actively pursuing the Commander and anything relationship related is implied; Künne is very clearly trying to pursue you from the word go, even at Stranger levels of affection, despite self-identifying as a young girl. There's also implied physicality in her Love line, something which virtually never happens even for adult-presenting ships in the modern game.
    • Also, she treats Z23 as a kind of older sister, despite being chronologically older than her. Only the 1936A-class and beyond do that later on; Lebe (in her later appearances and lines) and Thiele never do anything of the sort.
  • Precocious Crush: She has a fairly obvious thing for Commander from the off. Naturally, it's up to the player whether you bother to reciprocate in any fashion.
Commander, skipping breakfast is bad for your body. I've prepared some cereal and toast for you; if you don't mind, would you like to eat together?

I am Z21, Narvik Z-class destroyer flagship, Wilheim Heidkamp! Since you worked so hard to find me, I suppose I'll have to follow you home.

  • Small Name, Big Ego: Because she got to be flagship once during the Narvik operation, she thinks that makes her one of the greatest Ironbloods alive. It's clearly meant to be something a joke and a contrast to her Normal-rarity nature.
  • Tsundere: As a result of the above. She is drippingly tsundere, in a somewhat more classical way than the very Asuka-inspired Hipper.

    The Type 1936 A-class

Class-wide Tropes

  • More Dakka: As noted with Z23 below, a big part of the point of these ships was an attempt to fit what had traditionally been light cruiser armament onto a destroyer that could still keep speed - the result was a ship that mounted, variously, four or five 15-cm TbtsK C/36es, with performance characteristics pretty comparable to the SK C/25s used by the light cruisers of the time. In game terms, this means the 1936-As have a lot more Firepower than other destroyers (usually at the cost of a bit of torpedo power) and can mount guns flagged as "light cruiser" guns. Z23's retrofit, meanwhile, takes the trope to extremes — she reaches base FP levels comparable to top-end CLs like the Cleveland sisters.
  • Not the Intended Use: Funnily enough, thanks to the fact that Firepower is a stat inherent to the shipgirl herself, and not generally the guns they use, it's actually still better to use "standard" destroyer guns on the 1936-A girls because the destroyer guns in-game have better fire rate and somewhat inflated per-shell numbers compared to light cruiser guns to make up for the fact that most destroyers have pitiful FP stats. When you put a gun like that on a girl with 150 base Firepower, the result is, shall we say, explosive.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/z23_7.png
Z 23 (Retrofit)
Guten Tag, Your Excellency. My name is Z23. Let's study and aim for the top together!

The personification of the German destroyer Z23, the first Kriegsmarine destroyer commissioned after the disaster that was the twin Naval Battles of Narvik, where the Wehrmacht overall completed their goals spectacularly... at the cost of fully half of the Z destroyer fleet. Z23 and the 1936-A class (also called the "Narvik" class in commemoration of the destruction of the Z fleet at Narvik) introduced a number of changes to the design, most notably the fact that they now mounted fifteen-centimetre guns as their primary artillery armament - these are guns previously used on German light cruisers. This made the 1936-As more akin to "pocket cruisers" than destroyers.

  • A-Cup Angst: Normally Nimi does not act this way, but there is a rather special but subverted case in episode 2 of Azur Lane Slow Ahead: when Eugen pulled out a chocolate bar from her chest, she looked at her own and wonder if she had the confidence to do the same. Cue the next scene when Laffey locked her arms from behind so that Javelin could try the same trick on Nimi (read: try putting the chocolate bar on Nimi's chest), and it was clear Nimi was totally against it (in vain, obviously). There is also a scene when she tried to wear Lexington's outfit, only to find that her stature is too small to wear it (it is designed for Lexington herself, who is a well-endowed and full-grown woman). In Chapter 69, she finds herself reacting similiarly in a bath with Littorio and Vittorio Veneto, particularly well endowed battleships. It's not so much Nimi is small (by destroyer standards she's nicely sized), but she's comparing herself to bigger women based on heavier shipclasses.
  • Badass Cape: Gains one post-retrofit.
  • Beehive Barrier: Post-remodel, Z23's Destruction Mode skill grants her two rotating energy shields, each can block 5 bullets. It's a bit lacking considering that the average shield skill in Heavy Cruisers can take 8 rounds, but considering she is one of only 5 characters that can deploy shields in this gamenote , and the rest are all Heavy Crusiers, the fact that she is a Destroyer that can deploy shields is downright impressive.
  • Butt-Monkey: In Slow Ahead, expect her to be at the center of whatever misfortune happens in the episode.
  • Collection Sidequest: In the JP and KR versions of the game, she's unlocked as a playable ship only after every other starter ship (Javelin, Laffey, and Ayanami) are max limit-broken, in sharp contrast to other collection sidequest ships which let you pick and choose a few partial limit breaks. Once you get all fifteen "rank" stars, a free copy of Z23 is given as a reward, and future copies can be obtained from the build menu or obtained as drops from the same maps where the other starters can be found.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Loosely speaking with the other starters, and played straight with her other sisters of the same class (Z24 is a big chuunibyou, Z25 has a mild case of sister complex, and so on). According to the manga, she is the responsible one to the other three starters, even trying to at as a sort of Cool Big Sis and even a teacher, though without much success. This gets especially shown off in the Kizuna AI collaboration event, where she's basically the Straight Man to everyone else's antics. (AI included.) With the reveal of her close siblings in the Type 1936A class, it's shaping up that she's the responsible one to them.
  • Historical In-Joke: The drink she's holding in her formal skin is heavily implied to be Fanta Orange (But called merely orange juice to avoid copyrights), which was invented in Germany. This got Lost in Translation for EN as for some reason, it was localized as Apple Juice (which isn't entirely inaccurate as Fanta did come in apple flavor)
  • Hot Teacher: Her teacher skin highlights her decently sizable bust and legs.
  • Jack of All Trades: Nimi is surprisingly good at many things. One of the most prominent instances is how she can be both an idol and a manager at the same time. She can also be a teacher or a waitress... in her skins. Perhaps it was the result of how she had to be the Straight Man most of the time when dealing with others, especially her fellow starters.
  • Mighty Glacier: At least for a destroyer - she has the highest firepower and the lowest speed among the starters, and her Ironblood Pioneer skill increases her firepower even further for a short duration. Her retrofit takes her into Lightning Bruiser territory with a nice Evasion upgrade while giving her a Firepower stat usually reserved for genuine cruisers.
  • Not So Above It All: For all her efforts at being the serious one of the four starters Niimi has a few moments where it's clear that it is at least partly an act. For example, once her retrofit is complete one of her lines has her looking to go find Javelin and play around. Another example is when she's groped in her wedding dress and she tells the commander to save it for after work, but not without letting it slip that she still really likes it.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: She is usually called Zed in the EN version of the game. In Japan, she's usually known as Niimi instead note , particularly in Slow Ahead. She does refer to herself as "Niimi" in the Japanese audio when you oath her (even though the script still reads "Z23"); naturally, the English script doesn't reference this. As time has gone on even the English-speaking fandom has been starting to refer to her as Niimi more and more. Not to be confused with Zed from League of Legends.
  • Only Sane Man: On several fronts. She's often in this role in crossover events when the four starters are often the representative cast for AL itself, and she tends to be the "grounded" one in works like Slow Ahead. She's also become this to her sisters as time has gone on, as it's become clear she's the comparatively "normal" one in relation to the rest of them (who are, respectively, a wannabe demon, a stuffed-animal obsessive, Secret Gamer Trash, and an overly airheaded kawaiiko).
  • Power-Up Letdown: The ability to use Light Cruiser guns on a destroyer sounds awesome until you see how the general DPS drop in using one in most cases.
  • Starter Mon: One of three available starters in the CN and EN servers along with Javelin and Laffey, with Ayanami as the starter collection reward. She is the starter collection reward for the JP and KR servers.
  • Super Mode: Post-remodel, her Destruction Mode skill has a high chance for every 20 seconds to release a powerful barrage, deploy two rotating shields that can block 5 enemy shells each, and increase the Critical Hit rate of her main gun to 100% for 10 seconds, allowing her to tear through enemy ships through sheer damage per shot.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her post remodels skin has a more determined appearance and a Badass Cape. It's downplayed due to how she's serious-looking even in her base art.

I'm the Iron Blood destroyer, Z26! I look forward to working with you! ...All right, that should do just fine as an introduction...!

  • Continuity Nod: Her causal skin has a line referring to other ships with similar skins, Ryuujou and U-96.
  • Exact Words: Her "Anti Torpedo Field" skill mentons a barrage procing "upon (the torpedo shield) being destroyed and timing out"; at first it was assumed to be a typo but it was revealed even if the shield breaks, the barrage will still proc at the point it would time out.

Pleased to meet you, Commander! I'm the one in the exact middle of the 1936A-class destroyers, Z28! My mission is to support you to the best of my abilities!

  • Nice Girl: Always has a cheerful smile and the worst she gets is some warnings about special touches.
  • Support Party Member: Has a mutual synergy with her sisters; she boosts their Firepower, Acc and Anti-Air and if one is in the same fleet with her, she gets a boost to her Firepower, Torpedo, and Anti-Sub stats. She also has a smoke screen skill.
  • Uniformity Exception: Unlike other ships in the Type 1936A class, she has stats more akin to a typical destroyer.

Commander, my fellow fleet members, hello~! I'm the singing and dancing Z35! Pleased to meet you!

  • Idol Singer: Seems to be the token one for the Ironblood faction and idolizes the Lexington class carriers.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Historically speaking, she sank after hitting a German minefield, just like the one she's sitting on.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Upon doing a special touch, she remarks that her affection points for you have dropped. This is not true in-game, however (no matter how many times you touch a girl's breast, their affection won't go down even a bit, the only way the affection can be lowered is to sortie when at zero morale). This might be a nod to idol games where that is the case.
  • More Dakka: Her "Overload firepower" boosts her firepower by up to 30% and Reload up to 200% (near Laffey levels), but has a recoil effect of -100% reload for the cooldown.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Her reaction to any attempt by her sister to join her in being a "Devil Idol" as according to Z36's lines, she vanishes quickly.
  • V-Sign: Does this in her art.

I was born as a destroyer in the Baltic Sea, the Devil Idol Z36! I once sailed in the gulf of Finland, but finally at the hands of the damnable cursed black object... (cough), in any case, look forward to my demonic strength to bring you victory!

The third Chuunibyou member in the game. She got dragged into forming an idol group by Z35. She is bad with eyedrops.

  • Chuunibyou: Devil themed.
  • CloudCuckoolander: Somehow manages to have her head even higher in the clouds than Z35, who refuses to take part in her "demonic rituals".
  • Historical In-Joke: The mine wrapped around her legs is a reference to her and her sister's ultimate fates, as both Z35 and Z36 were sunk when a storm caused them to sail off-course and strike a friendly minefield.
  • Power Incontinence: Her Demon Strike skill allows her to fire a barrage & increase her Torpedo stats to compete with Ayanami. However, the damage boost decreases over time until she fires her barrage again & resets it.

Are you the one who called for me? I am… I hate to admit it, but I was not given a name. For the time being, call me Z46.

The personification of the Type 1936C-class German destroyer Z46... a ship that was lain down but never even launched or hull-completed.

  • Anti-Air: Her focus as a unit; if Z23 is a normal Light Cruiser in a destroyer frame, Z46 would be an Anti-Air Light Cruiser on a destroyer frame.
  • Artificial Human: ...Sort of. At the very least, she's meant to invoke the image of the trope in comparison to a lot of the other shipgirls - unlike most of the rest of the cast (who are World War 2 ships that actively served in ways that range from mundane to legendary), Z46 only ever existed in theory. She and her sister Z47 were technically lain down, but they never got much further than some basic superstructure work before supply problems and bomber raids constantly delayed their launches. As a result, unlike many of her fellows, her Wisdom Cube is kind of forcing her to exist and she has absolutely no life experience to draw on, unlike other shipgirls who had experiences and were influenced by their circumstances and their crews. This makes her a lot more similar to the prototype ships than the others. Her being voiced by Minori Chihara, who's built a career voicing this type of character, only further hammers it home.
  • Canon Name: It's not strictly enforced, but her questline does lean fairly hard on naming her "Weiss" or a similar color name upon oathing her.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She has a dedicated character quest which is available if you have her in your fleet. It both fills in the progression of her feelings between her affection levels and also helps to fill in a few details about the Azur Lane world as a whole and how your AL operates.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Big-time. When you first get her, she's not completely cold but she's very distant and formal, and in the early parts of her questline borders on being a Robot Girl in terms of her responses and emotional range. By the time you get to 100 affinities, she outright refers to you as 愛する人よ, or "dearly beloved" in Englishnote  and her voice is thick with affection.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: An example that can be simultaneously sweet and also a bit hilarious. When you oath with a girl, you're allowed to give her a new display name. This usually comes across as just a nickname, but when oathed, Z46 explicitly calls this mechanic out, and it's treated like the culmination of her entire plotline, with you finally giving her the name she has longed for. (It becomes hilarious when... the rest of her lines don't change to reflect the fact that she got a name.)
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Usually referenced as Fiize, which is an approximation to "Vier Sechs".note
  • Never Given a Name: Unlike her sisters who are comfortable with their numeric names, Z46 feels quite a bit of angst over hers, spends her personal quest seeking a name, and specifically asks to be given a name if oathed.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: Mystical White Hair, Technicolor Eyes suggestive of Supernatural Gold Eyes, as close to the Artificial Human trope as a shipgirl can get, feels a lot of existential angst over the nature of her existence and lack of a name or identity, and is voiced by Minori Chihara? Yep, that's one for the list, all right.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: Never experienced war, as she was never completed before the war ended.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Once again in a shipgirl sense - her origins are fairly different from many of the other shipgirls, and she has extremely prominent golden eyes which set her apart.
  • Useless Useful Skill: Piercing Shells grants her a 15% damage bonus when equipped with an AP gun. The problem with this is that AP destroyer guns are comically bad due to having unflattering damage modifiers and worse stats, and unlike Z23, Z46 doesn't even have the option to equip a cruiser gun to try and make the skill work. Combined with her expectedly low Firepower stat (even with the buff from Iron Wing Annihilation, she falls short of even Common light cruisers). However since her barrage involves AP shells and the gear lab having an AP DD gun with actually usable stats (bonus points for being her actual supposed guns), there may be some worth in leveling his skill.
  • What Is This Feeling?: She takes in every new experience, given she didn't have a chance to before.

"Oh? I've heard no shortage of heroic tales about you, but you sure look spindly in person. Then again, I suppose it only makes sense for you chessmasters to be more brain than brawn. I'm Otto von Alvensleben, Iron Blood destroyer. Let's see what you can do.

  • Artistic License – Ships: The Type 1937J ships were never actually built, and were never planned to be built at all after it was found their specifications made doing so impossible due to weight constraints. This might be why she is noticeably curvy and bottom heavy compared to most IB destroyers.
  • Scary Teeth: Her teeth resemble a shark's.

"I am Felix Schultz, Iron Blood blueprint ship. Oh, you crave my power? Easy. Just use that rotten brain of yours to please me. You should be grateful I'm even willing to allow you to worship me instead of forcing you to submit unconditionally."

Personification of the Type 1938Ac "ocean-going destroyer" Felix Schultz, she is released as part of the sixth research collaboration with World of Warships

  • Artistic License – Ships: Just like the Type 1937J before, the Type 1938Ac never got the approval to be built because of weight issues. In Felix's case, it was the weight and size of the proposed hybrid steam diesel propulsion which resulted in a wacky artillery arrangement and improper balance of the ship. Also, the "Ocean-going destroyer" is kind of a gimmick; many of the German destroyers like the Type 1934 were not exactly designed to the rigorous sailing environment that is the Atlantic (which severely hindered their operational capabilities) to support the large capital ships, which was what the Type 1938Ac was designed for.
  • Attention Whore: She really wants the Commander to look at her. Like a lot.
  • Lightning Bruiser: After her release, she becomes one of the best tank destroyers for fleet vanguards that need more speed and evasion once you can fully develop her, as well as her damage buff from her skills.

"Heehee, it is you that summoned Emden, isn't it, my darling human? I shall make real your every desire if only you surrender yourself. "Heehee. Submit to Emden. Submit to us.""

The personification of... two separate SMS Emdens, both the legendary cruiser of the Dresden-class as well as the later 1916-era Konigsberg-class cruiser. She is, notably, the very first character in Azur Lane that is a personification of two separate ships.

  • Eyepatch of Power: Both forms of Emden sport rose eyepatches on opposing eyes, with Dresden Emden wearing a white rose in her left and Konigsberg Emden with a red rose in her right.
  • Hidden Depths: In her "Disappointed" line, Dresden Emden blames herself for the Commander's behavior, believing she got carried away in her taunting and made the Commander hate them both.
Oh dear. It seems Emden got carried away. Such a pity... Her only darling human, broken by her own hands.
  • Light Is Not Good: While her white color scheme, soft appearance, and gentle manner of speech would imply otherwise, Dresden Emden is actually quite sinister and domineering.
  • Literal Split Personality: A given considering she is the personification of two different ships. To differentiate, the Konigsberg-class Emden is given quotation marks in her parts of Emden's lines.
  • Marshmallow Hell: In the "Tales From The Count's Castle" mini-event, if you choose to submit to Emden after drawing her in a chess game instead of challenging her again, she drops this line in the aftermath:
"Your induction to the family comes later. For now, just rest your head on Emden's chest and be whisked away to sleep."
  • Tsundere: Konisberg Emden generally acts more snappy, while Dresden Emden is more openly affectionate.
"Don't assume I'm fond of you, pitiable human."
You have the sweet scent of a bud that wishes to blossom, dear human. The kind of scent that Emden adores.

"I'm Elbing, Iron Blood cruiser. I know you're going to shun me since I'm worthless in a battle... You're not going to do that? Ah, right... The only thing I have going for me is how disposable I am..."

  • Born Unlucky: Her career was notably marred by bad luck. She was originally commissioned for use by the Imperial Russian Navy, but was seized by the Germans and launched as part of the High Seas Fleet. From there she only engaged in two battles, and ended up scuttled after taking heavy damage (both from the British and being rammed by one of her allies) during the Battle of Jutland.
  • Historical In-Joke: Her low HP line has her worried she is about to collide with another ship, which refers to how she collided with the battleship Posen at Jutland.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She considers herself a burden to the rest of the girls.
  • The Jinx: She sees herself as this. She deliberately phrases things the opposite of what she actually wants, so in her Love line she says the following:
I'm going to have an awful day today. It's going to rain, the restaurant I booked a table at will close early, same for the movie theater after that, and you'll receive urgent work that keeps you busy all night... That should do it! Thanks for waiting while I recited all that.
  • Parasol of Prettiness: Her base skin has her carrying a parasol. She explains that because everything always happens the opposite of what she wants, she carries it to make sure it won't rain.

    The Königsberg-class

Class-wide Tropes

  • Com Mons: The sisters are three of only five Common-rarity Ironblood ships, and are the only ones aside from Z1 and Z23 who drop on regular story maps (and naturally, both are a lot rarer, and Z1 is available on precisely three maps as opposed to 23's wide availability). You end up seeing them pretty regularly as a result.
  • Covert Pervert: König and Karl have shades of this - when you "special touch" Königsberg, instead of getting angry or embarrassed, she says you aren't doing it right and offers to teach you how to touch a girl "properly" (and note that she says this with a smile on her face and whip in hand). Karlsruhe, meanwhile, just enjoys it and is a little surprised by the sudden good feeling. When picked up in the dorm, she also looks like she's having the time of her life. Köln is the only one who's conventionally unimpressed (and even then, it doesn't really break her demeanor).
  • Hot Teacher: They act much like teachers, except maybe Karlsruhe. In addition, Köln manages the tactical classroom. This is in part a nod to their age - they were all lain down and launched during the inter-war period, and are some of the older ships on the cast. Furthermore, once the Wehrmacht got into full swing, the Königsbergs were used heavily as training vessels to prepare sailors for service on u-boats or other vessels (while those were still being built) - Köln even references this fact at one point.
  • Historical In-Joke: Their uniforms are actually one, compared to much of the rest of the Ironbloods. While the uniformity of outfits among all the navies of AL is Mildly Military at best, a keen observer might notice that the Königsbergs have a look that is actually rather at odds with all the rest of the Ironbloods - they use a different shade of red on their jackets (and these jackets, with their gold trim and tassels, are rather unlike many other Ironblood jackets, being shorter in particular), their uniforms aren't as "wild" as say, the Heavy Cruisers, the design of their caps is subtly different, their ship rigging very notably doesn't look nearly as animalistic as many of their fellows, and you'll even notice some emblems on them, like on Königsberg herself, that doesn't appear on other vessels. This is all a nod to the ships' origins — that is, they weren't built by Nazis. The Königsbergs were all constructed during the interwar period and were among the vessels allowed to Weimar Germany by the Versailles and Washington treaties. They pretty much perforce came along for the ride when the Reichsmarine became the Kriegsmarine and the "Ironblood" became what we see in-game. Their uniforms, therefore, reflect their history and to some degree the navy they used to serve, a conceit which carries forward to Leipzig (see below). This even carries over to Köln's retrofit, which is probably the only Ironblood ship that wears a Reichsadler that doesn't use the same angular styling as the Parteiadler and doesn't seem to be perched on a wreath, though it could possibly be hidden by the shape of her hat.
  • Moveset Clone: Ultimately subverted. The trio of sisters begin with nigh-identical stats except for their Anti-Submarine Warfare stat and their Luck Stat*. But Königsberg has an entirely different skill than her sisters (Reload Command: Cruiser instead of Full Firepower), while Karlsruhe has a retrofit to boost her stats and give her a third skill. Thus, the only real moveset clone was pre-retrofit Karlsruhe with poor Köln, who was wholly overshadowed... until she got a retrofit alongside the Bismarck event. So once you retrofit them both, they all end up quite different from one another... but in their base forms, they're highly similar (and poor Königsberg remains without a retrofit).

So you are the commander? Aren't you a cute one, hehe... I will "take care" of you in the future.

  • Cool Big Sis: Most of the time, unless she goes too far with her teasing.
  • Little Big Sister: While she is a Cool Big Sis most of the time, Köln sometimes have to keep her in line. It's a bit unclear if she's even entirely "serious" about it and not just having some fun at the expense of the Commander and Köln, though.

Hi hi, it's me, Karlsruhe! I look forward to looking with you, commander~

  • Fanservice Pack: She gains more obvious cleavage after her retrofit and shows more of her legs; granted, this still isn't as big an example as some of the other shipgirls.
  • Genki Girl: She is always cheerful and always asking to play.
  • Older Than They Look: She appears to be the youngest by her looks, even though she isn't.

Köln (Retrofit)
You seem like a wise commander...I'm Köln, I shall support you with all my power, so just leave it to me.

  • Art Evolution: Her retrofit uniform is different in quite a number of ways from her base art (and in a number of respects is a marked improvement) - the design of her cap is actually more consistent with Leipzig's, her rigging looks significantly more metallic, she gains shoulder tassels of the sort which were much more common in the Reichsmarine and Kasierliche Marine than the Kriegsmarine, her posture is significantly more confident-looking, and she also gains an animated dialogue portrait, which not even Karlsruhe got (since Karl got her retro prior to animated portraits becoming standard for every new ship or retrofit).
  • Beleaguered Assistant: She comes across as this as secretary - she tries to keep the Commander on the straight and narrow, while also having to deal with her sisters and their attempts to distract the Commander from his duties. It's still a bit milder than most examples, since Köln still (mostly) seems to think well of the Commander, even if she does have some Sassy Secretary moments (like worrying that König is going to "awaken some weird fetish" of yours with her teasing).
  • Bespectacled Cutie: She has a pair of red-framed half-rimmed glasses, and she's the most responsible, straightforwardly demure, and mature of the sisters. Her glasses get traded out for full rimless spectacles in her retrofit.
  • Big Little Sister: She is the most responsible and mature of her sisters, and at times help to keep her big sisters in line.

    The Leipzig-class

Class-wide Tropes

  • Sibling Yin-Yang:
    • On full display as a reference to the circumstances of their creation. Leipzig was one of the last vessels fully built and commissioned before the Nazi Party took power, and used somewhat older technologies (like Krupp cemented armor) in her construction, with a general design eye toward being multi-mission and in tune with Weimar naval sensibilities. Nürnberg, meanwhile, was one of the first vessels ordered by the Nazi government (while they were technically still "Weimar" but already had power), was one of the first vessels to use technologies like the Wotan steel that would define later vessels like Bismarck, and was much more heavily armed and built for total war than Leipzig originally was.note  As a result, Leipzig has a uniform and color scheme much closer to the K sisters and Fishy is basically a unique rig, while Nürnberg wears a uniform much more in line with the newer, fascist-era Ironbloods and her companion rig shares far more design attributes with later Ironbloods like Roon or the carriers than with Fishy (and is significantly bigger than him).
    • They even have physical differences outside of the uniforms: Leipzig has golden-blonde hair with a short cut and violet eyes (which leave her looking a touch like a fantasy RPG character), while Nürnberg has silver-grey hair cut short in front but with a pair of long pigtails in the back, bright red eyes, and what appear to be a pair of natural horns on her head, which all reinforce her "classically Nazi" look in contrast to her sister.

Leipzig (Retrofit)
Nice to meet you, Commander. I'm Leipzig… I'm often on the verge of fainting due to malnutrition, but I'll do my best to follow your orders…

  • Artistic License – History: Given her introduction, you'd think she was a frail ship from the start, but in actuality, she served well both during the interwar period and during the war (ending up with, arguably, a more impressive service record than her "improved" sister), and the infamous accident with Prinz Eugen happened mere months prior to the end of the war yet became her foremost defining character attribute. Her referring to Eugen as "Eugen-oneechan" in the JP script & audio and generally treating her like a " senpai" is also a little odd, since Leipzig was the senior of the two vessels in age by roughly seven years.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: By implication. Leipzig openly worries that Eugen is mad at her for the whole ramming incident (when it was at least partially Eugen's fault historically, and Eugen was nearly undamaged while poor Leip nearly got torn in half - the historical Eugen's bow was infamously reported as sticking out of the other end of Leipzig's hull by the end of the collision!) but Eugen herself has made absolutely no comment about Leip either way, across multiple Ironblood and seasonal events and across multiple voiced skins.
  • Collection Sidequest: She's unlocked as a playable ship only after 9 total stars have been obtained from Königsberg-class cruisers note  — a free copy is then given as a reward, and future copies can be obtained from the build menu to help with limit-breaking. This has the benefit of making her tremendously F2P friendly, as she can be obtained and leveled very easily with free resources.
  • Companion Cube: She calls her weapons rig "Fishy". It's definitely a middle ground between the super-cute destroyer rigs and the utterly monstrous rigs employed by her senior cousins.
  • Delicate and Sickly: She has a penchant for fainting when you first meet her. Given her self-introduction, this is almost certainly a nod to her WW2 history, as she was badly damaged in a collision with Prinz Eugen, and just patched up enough to stay afloat, but not enough to resume sea operations, instead of serving as a floating artillery emplacement, shelling the coastline trying to stop the Red Army advance in the Polish coast.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Her retrofit grants her a new skill, which besides some team utility, also grants her an ability that triggers when her health reaches 30%, granting brief invincibility and some increased damage to help turn the tide.
  • Historical In-Joke: Just as with the Königsbergs, she was built during the interwar period* for the Weimar Reichsmarine, which is why her military uniform differs from the "proper" Ironbloods (up to and including her own sister).
  • Orgasmic Combat: Incidental at that. The audio for her starting mission line has the unfortunate luck of sounding, at least to English speakers, like moaning, when in actuality she's worrying about fainting and is hyperventilating.
  • Prone to Tears: Definitively the most sensitive of all the Ironbloods, and early on, especially before you retrofit her, she seems like she's on the verge of tears half the time. This fades a bit post-retro, though.
  • Support Party Member: She is considered to be one of the best front-line passive buffers in the game despite her modest rarity and simplicity in obtaining. As another nod to what was supposed to be her fleet role (and how she was a supportive vessel even after the crash with Prinz Eugen), her Tactical Command skill buffs the Firepower, Torpedo Power and Reload of all cruisers in the line with her by 10% at max level. (To put it in perspective, most other buff auras of this sort buff a single stat for up to 15% - and these are often found on ships of a higher rarity than Leip.) Post-retrofit she gains a new support skill that provides an increase for vanguard fleet movement speed and a damage reduction for directly crashing into enemy ships.
  • Third-Person Person: In Japanese (and thus the JP audio the EN version uses) she sometimes refers to herself like this, but not as consistently as, say, the Erebuses. The EN text removes this entirely.
  • When She Smiles: In the trailer for Inverted Orthant, she seems absolutely delighted to be reunited with her sister, and gives Nürnberg a big, genuine smile to try and cheer her up. It's a million miles away from the gloominess many commanders will remember from when they first met Leip.

Nürnberg

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nurnberg1.png
I am the second ship of the Leipzig-class, Nürnberg. Starting today, I shall serve you to the best of my abilities... Is that acceptable?

  • Big Sister Instinct: Inverted, since she's the second and younger ship of her class. If she's not worrying about the Commander doing something perverse to her, she's worrying about him doing it to Leipzig.
  • Covert Pervert: Arguably, she's got some less than wholesome trains of thought running given how quickly she jumps to accusations of the Commander wanting to be perverse at the drop of a hat. It definitely starts coming out as her Affinity rises, since Nurnberg lets slip that she's getting more and more okay with the idea of the Commander doing things with her.
Affinity (Like): "Ugh, you really were planning something weird after all... At this rate, I... I'll be... Fine with it...?"
Affinity (Love): "Even if you tried to have your way with me, I don't think I'd..."
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: Even moreso than her sister. Nürn has incredibly prominent hips and thighs; moreover, in her default uniform her garters squeeze her thighs in what might be termed A Suggestive Manner™.
  • Historical In-Joke: The reason why she looks so different from her own sister, Leipzig? She was commissioned under the Kriegsmarine, while Leipzig was commissioned during the Weimar Reichmarine period. She also happens to have similar appearaces to Roon more than Leipzig, justified given Roon's development history.
  • Horned Humanoid: In noted contrast to her horn-less sister. The horns have an aesthetic suggestive of Horns of Villainy, but Nürn doesn't really have the temperament to match.
  • Marilyn Maneuver: In her default outfit's art. Realistically, her uniform would actually do a reasonably good job of being modest (and is so in the Inverted Orthant trailer), but her character art just has to have a convenient bit of wind make the skirt billow a bit...
  • The Paranoiac: Constantly worried about and on the lookout for any "weird" (read: perverse) behaviour coming from the Commander, even if it's something as simple as him being on his own she'll accuse him of "waiting for everyone else to leave" first. That said...
  • Prone to Tears: While Leipzig is sometimes accused of this, Nürn is genuinely so, especially in her New Years travel outfit; two different portraits in that skin feature her tearing up!
  • Properly Paranoid: Considering the in-game option to 'Special Touch' (ie: grope) any ship in the roster, Nurn's worries about the Commander being "weird" have more merit than she thinks.

Light cruiser, Mainz. There were plans for me to succeed the Admiral Hipper class, but due to circumstances, I've incarnated in this form. You get the rest without me telling you, right?

  • Artistic License – History: Mainz is even more interesting than the other Ironblood Research vessels in this regard.
    • The "Mainz class", you see, absolutely did exist, two were substantially built (though not commissioned because they were incomplete), and one even sailed, albeit under tow — these are the vessels that history remembers as the Seydlitz and, variously, the Lützow, Petropavlovsk, and Talinn. The Kriegsmarine wanted to take a page out of the idea of the Mogami-class cruisers and launch the remaining Hippers in a "light cruiser" configuration to make it appear that they were still respecting Germany's various naval treaties... with the idea, of course, of immediately popping off the 12-gun six-inches in favor of the standard 203mms once the fighting actually started. The trick is, the two ships were begun sufficiently late ('36 and '37) that by the time their hulls were nearing completion, the fighting had started... rendering the idea of having to comply with treaties moot and making it more logical to just complete them as standard Hippers. The "light cruiser version Hipper", therefore, absolutely existed on paper, in planning, and even to some extent on slipways, but one was never launched in that actual configuration.
    • Compounding things even further is that there were also the M-class light cruiser designs, which were planned to use the same 150 mm guns in a more typical light cruiser configuration, albeit in four twin turret setup rather than six.
    • Because of the above, what is an invention is the name "Mainz"; there is no record of plans to change the naming schema of the vessels had they launched as CLs, and "Seydlitz" and "Lützow" are the only names ever list for the vessels. That said, the German naval tradition dictates that a ship doesn't actually get named until the launching ceremony, and the reversion to the standard Hipper design occurred well before that. "Mainz" is in keeping with standard German light cruiser naming conventions dating back to the Kaiserliche Marine (that is, they are named after major German cities, and there was a KM vessel by that name), but it was never planned for use with any extant, known vessels. Nor is there any indication of whether the Kriegsmarine had intended to utilize that naming scheme for the "light cruiser Hippers". On the one hand every actual light cruiser in their service did carry the name of a German city, rather than that of a war hero (as was the scheme for Kaiserliche Marine armored cruisers and battlecruisers, and for Kriegsmarine heavy cruisers). On the other hand they were meant to be major combatants just like the heavy cruiser Hippers, not merely escorts or scouts like a typical light cruiser, so Seydlitz and Lützow would have remained plausible names even if they had been built with the triple 150mm instead of twin 203mm guns.
    • What makes even more interesting is that Seydlitz has appearred in the game in her light carrier form Weser and Lützow has appeared in the North Union as Tallinn, which makes Mainz similar to battleship!Kaga, in that both she and Weser are essenially the same ship with different configurations (Weser is the "finalized" form, while Mainz is the early prototype).
  • Challenge Seeker: As a ship that only ever existed in theory, she seeks to prove her worth through success in combat, although as her affection increases, this explicitly becomes less of a factor of her personality.
  • Counter-Attack: If her Retaliatory Shield soaks up 6 shells, she fires a barrage in response.
  • Foil: A conceptual one to Wichita, being a downgunned heavy cruiser classified as a light one to her upgunned light cruiser classified as a heavy cruiser.
  • More Dakka: She has a number of barrages which compensates for being stuck with light cruiser guns.
  • Not So Above It All: regarding her Real Men Take It Black stance, as in a Juustagram post she made coffee from Wakamizu, the first drawn water of the year...note  which turned out to be a Pharisäernote .
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Her "special touch" voice line has her propose finishing testing her guns with the commander as her practice target. Downplayed after swearing the oath, in which she tells the Commander to hold their horse.
  • Real Men Take It Black: Two of her idle lines relate to her love for coffee.
Adding milk to coffee is nothing short of blasphemy! The same goes for sugar!!!
  • Stance System: Her Ausgewogen skill gives her, depending on her positioning, either speed, evasion, and damage reduction or crit damage and a special barrage.
  • Tears of Joy: Pay close attention to her expression during her oath scene and you will see a few sheds of tears in her eyes while smiling.

Iron Blood light cruiser, Regensburg. While I have no particular history to speak of, I'll prove that I'm not so easily controlled by you. Regina, let's show our inferiors what we're made of! (Roooar!)

  • Barely-There Swimwear: Calling her swimsuit skin "skimpy" is a HUGE understatement! In fact, in most official art, it is censored by having her dragon tail cover her crotch area.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Much to her own shock and embarrassment, she is infuriated by the thought of the Commander taking peeks at other girls in the "Love" affinity quote for her "Dark Dragon, Brilliant Beach" costume.
  • Dominatrix: Beyond just dressing like one with her semi-transparent bodyglove, revealing latex singlet, and full-length gloves & boots, Regensburg's job as a rigging tamer and various lines have her oozing dominatrix vibes.
  • Fluffy Tamer: She's referred to as a 'rigging tamer' in her debut event, implying it's her job to break in the monstrous rigs of her compatriots. Of particular note, she was responsible for helping get the three-headed dragon Geryon set up as Bismarck's Type Zwei rig.
  • Hot as Hell: her outfit has themes of both dragons and devils and gets cranked up to 11 to fit her dominatrix personality.
  • Kaiju: Fitting for someone whose job is to break in the beastly rigs of the Ironblood, Regensburg's own rigging, a chained-down dragon/sea serpent named Regina, looks like the kind of thing you would strap onto a battleship rather than a cruiser.
  • The Scrooge: She is a big proponent of saving money wherever it can be saved, and berates the Commander in one of her secretary lines for the lavish spending that goes on at the base. Her post-oath lines and Juustagram post later reveal that she has the habit of storing every coin she earns into her own little piggy bank.

"The name's Yorck – I'm a cruiser. As of today, I'm in your hands. State your orders, and I will make my goals and desires one and the same as your directives. A wonderful arrangement, no? Heehee."

  • Aggressive Submissive: Despite being well-mannered and obedient, some of her voicelines hint at her being quite assertive towards the Commander. She is also featured in an episode of the in-game comic, aptly titled "The Insistent Assistent"
  • Born Unlucky: She was recalled to active service at the start of WW1, sortied only once and was sunk on the way back to port by a German minefield, less than 3 months into the war.
  • Dissonant Laughter: Most of her lines are accompanied by a giggle, including her skill activation line.
Hope you like being chopped to pieces. Heehee♪
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: She is noticeably bottom heavy with her hips visibly wider than her shoulders.
  • Say It with Hearts: How several of her lines are rendered in text including in the original Chinese.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Wears one that shows off her thighs and legs.

    The Deutschland-class

Class-wide Tropes

  • Animal Motifs: Sharks - Deutschland has a mechanical shark tail, while Graf Spee has a real shark tail that she wears armor over, and both have particularly predatory-looking rigging with low-set mouths. Additionally, Graf Spee's regular outfit has a shark mouth pattern on its skirt, while Deutschland has a similar pattern on her Commissar Cap in her own default skin.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Their unique 283mm guns, as impressive as they are, are only a small improvement over the Twin 203mm (SK C/34) 8-inch guns that all heavy cruisers can equip and their abnormal firing characteristics (their shells arc like those fired from the backline and aim for the furthest ship, not the closest like all other vanguard fleet guns) make them much more difficult to use effectively, especially considering how easy it is to simply line up shots that will hit multiple targets with the armor-piercing C/34s (since AP cruiser guns can hit multiple targets), or make use of the wealth of high-explosive options in the 8-inch line for anti-light-armor work. On that note, the 283mm guns in question use AP instead of HE ammo, while the ship's class skill, Pocket Battleship, buffs their damage against destroyers and light cruisers... who usually have light armor, thus making the guns suffer reduced damage from AP rounds. (The idea seems to be that the skill compensates for this and smooths out their damage curve against all targets, but it's even more effective to just strap on one of the many HE 8-inch turrets and have them go to town on light armor ships for 182% effective damage and leave the heavier stuff for the backline as per usual.)
  • BFG: Gameplay-wise. Before the introduction of Azuma, they were the only vanguard ships able to carry the Triple 283mm (SK C/28) turrets - 11-inch guns, larger than any other non-research frontline ship can mount and as large as the smallest backline main battery.note . Prinz Heinrich, introduced later on can use the same gun.
  • The Ghost: Admiral Scheer, the "middle sister" of the three ships, hasn't appeared in Azur Lane yet, which seems a strange omission given how quickly the other two were added, how she appeared to have an entry open for her in the old numerical ship index (at 247) and how popular they've been (Spee especially). Even stranger, Scheer was the most successful of the three, being the most successful capital ship surface raider of the entire war, whereas Spee is primarily famous for being scuttlednote  and Deutschland's career was basically one disaster after anothernote
  • Moveset Clone: Like many early shipgirl classes, the sisters come awfully close to being full clones of each other in gameplay; their skills (including All-Outs), weapon efficiencies and limit break gains are all precisely the same, as are their AA scores and speed. Their firepower, torpedo, evasion and reload stats are all within a mere one-to-four points of each other, as well. The only significant difference is in their luck (Deutsch has twice Spee's) and HP (Spee has a pretty significant HP lead - 350 points or so - on Deutsch).

You are now the great Deutschland's servant. Think of it as an honor. Also, don't answer me "mhm," you will answer me "yes, ma'am" from now on. Understood?

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: She's extremely proud of herself and refers to herself in Third-Person Person every so often. She makes it very clear in one of her lines to NOT underestimate her.
  • Barely-There Swimwear: Her summer skin.
  • Becoming the Mask: Sort of downplayed by way of accidental technical limitations. Although Deutsch learns that she's still fully accepted as a member of the Ironblood at the end of her character story despite some of the issues described below, this doesn't include any kind of update to her voice lines (ala Z46 not getting any new lines if you oath her), and even after the story concludes, she still calls you a filthy animal, still retains most of her bossy personality, but every appearance she makes in content following the release of her CS portrays her as much less fierce and intimidating to others.
  • Blood Knight: Enjoys smashing her enemies, very much. In her Dark Princess outfit she practically dives into Evil Gloating before every fight, and after (if she scores MVP).
  • Character Development: In her character story, after she overheard and barged into a secret meeting to learn that her comrades went along with her Cute and Psycho antics because they accepted her Composite Character identity and did not want to make her feel alienated, her insecurities reduced and she became more open and friendlier to others, and also calmly accepts when people ask her about her "Lützow" identity.
  • Composite Character: A weird kind of deconstruction and zig-zag. Late in her character story, it was revealed that thanks to the fact that Deutschland was renamed "Lützow" after the original, Admiral Hipper-class Lützow was sold to the Soviet Union, and thanks to the fact that Wisdom Cubes help manifest a shipgirl based on peoples' perceptions of the ships (and thus, people constantly confusing the two simultaneously-extant Lützows becomes relevant), the in-game Deutschland we know represents both the Deutschland-class ship number one and Hipper-Lützow at the same time, even though physically she's largely the Deutschland-class one. She herself is cognizant of this fact and developed a painful Inferiority Superiority Complex over it. She deeply feared possible rejection from her Ironblood comrades if they found out.
    • As of Khorovod of Dawn's Rime, The original Lützow becomes playable as a Northern Parliament ship, under her Soviet renaming Tallinn. And if Deutschland was trying to evoke her personality with her hostile, arrogant demeanor, she succeeded with flying colors. Tallinn is outright hostile and domineering towards the Commander in ways that even make Deutschland herself seem nice (prior to the reveleation of her Inferiority Superiority Complex, anyway). It even partially justifies Deutschland's decision to take up aspects of Tallinn's personality to endear herself to her Ironblood allies: Tallinn's voice lines suggest that the only other Northern Parliament ship she gets along with is Kirov, and apparently has a better relationship with Admiral Hipper than any of them. Tallinn also dismisses drinking vodka in favor of beer, further suggesting she is more in touch with her Ironblood roots than her current Northern Parliament allegiance. Tallinn herself seems to want to rub salt in Deutschland's wounds if they are sortied together.
Tallinn: I've always thought your name was a little funny.
  • Cute and Psycho: Acts and speaks like a stereotypical fantasy genre Evil Overlord, with a Slasher Smile to boot. Despite her initial bossy and aggressive lines, she also rather cutely demands to be carried like a princess if she falls in love with the commander.
    • In her character story, it was revealed that her bossy and intimidating personality was a ruse. Due to her Composite Character status, she feared to have her true identity noticed would lead to her becoming a pariah among her faction, thus compelled herself to act in ways she thinks "a typical Ironblood" should act, and gets very defensive when people call her Lützow.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Her summer skin pose definitively skews towards being lewd.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She bristles at being called Lützow. note
  • Evil Overlord: Played with and possibly used as a means to reference the Third Reich. She tries to invoke this image in her every interaction, calling you filthy animal, and is rather bombastic about smashing her enemies.
  • Hand Cannon: She has a handgun that rivals those of Alucard.
  • It's All About Me: Deutschland is a very self-centred girl. Despite her verbally-abusive streak to the Commander, she expects him to drop whatever he is doing and attend to her every need. It is a given though as she is a Sadist.
  • Jerkass: Loves calling everyone a "lowly animal" including the Commander (You). Even in her pledge line, she still makes it very clear that a lowly animal such as you should be grateful to have married her. She's not devoid of any redeeming qualities, however. See Character Development above.
  • Leotard of Power: Not obvious at first glance, but the base of her outfit is a white leotard, upon which the rest of her dress is anchored on.
  • The Napoleon: She gets annoyed whenever her height is brought up.
  • Pet the Dog: She's really one of the more monstrous Ironbloods, being visually monster-like, being very dismissive and commanding of the Commander at first and utterly relishing combat in both her playable voice lines and in events in which she features. However, she absolutely, without question, without hesitation, does love her little sister and will do whatever it takes to make sure she's happy and can get away from fighting for a while if that's what Spee wants. This is taken to humorous levels in Spee's "Maiden's Sunday" skin, wherein she apparently grabs a megaphone and loudly tells everyone in the base not to bully Spee on her Sunday off or there'll be consequences. This also pops up in Spee's Idol skin as one of Spee's lines asks to tell her to not be such a fangirl.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Her smugs may come across as this at first and her's are even more pronounced than Akagi's. However, she's not so much as psychotic as she just relishes in her sadism and arrogance, unlike the latter whom despite not having a much more grandiose version of this trope, you can't help but think that something about her is just "way off".
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: She's not an evil villain, per se. But, she is a selfish, arrogant brat who can be demeaning to everyone save for her beloved little sister. As you raise her affection, though, she begins to delve more into being a Tsundere but she can still be an asshole thorough and thorough, and never foregoes her verbal abuse, arrogance and sadism.
  • Sadist: Even more so than Ajax and Akagi combined. Some of her lines outright indicate that you are her obedient man-servant and/or pet and you should obey her.
  • Showgirl Skirt: You cannot tell on her default skin art, but her skirt/cloak combo opens right below her belly button, revealing a white leotard underneath it. It's more noticeable on her game sprite, and other official art.
  • Slasher Smile: A very, very prominent one on her default portrait alone.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Take great pride in her national naming, and acts like a spoiled royal child. It is actually a ruse to hide her Inferiority Superiority Complex.
  • Smug Snake: She likes showing off how powerful she is and loves the sound of her own voice too much. She seems to have nothing but utter contempt for everyone she calls a lowly animal. To say that she thinks highly of herself would be an understatement. About the only person, she has some form of affection to is her little sister, Graf Spee.
  • Sore Loser: Her lines when being defeated makes it very clear she does NOT take kindly to losing.
  • The Tease: Comes with the territory for being a Sadist. All of her skin features a healthy amount of these but it's much more pronounced in her Summer skin, for obvious reasons.
  • The Vamp: Invoked in her Dark Demon Princess skin.
  • Troubled, but Cute: Due to her Inferiority Superiority Complex.
  • Tsundere: After her affection with you increases, she still acts like a stereotypical Evil Overlord and call you a filthy animal, but uses her bossy commands to rather poorly hide the fact that she fawns over you, such as demanding you tell her your wishes, and eventually commanding you to carry her like a princess.

Admiral Graf Spee

It seems no matter where I go, the war wages on… Commander, Admiral Graf Spee, Deutschland-class armored cruiser number 3, has arrived.

  • Artificial Limbs: Subverted - Until her other skins were revealed (where she has normal human hands), it was thought she had prosthetic arms, much like Z25's right hand. Instead, it turns out that, like her sister, she's just wearing gauntlets, albeit much larger ones that must require some sort of mechanical actuation, as they're far too large to simply operate with her own fingers (a Historical In-Joke to the Deutschlands having a massive pyramid type bridge). Notably, much of her dialogue is bittersweet about how her claws prevent her from ever hugging the commander as if she can't remove them herself. The theme of her alternate skins is getting her out of her gauntlets and rig and letting her finally have a normal day, which also comes up in her character story.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Scuttles herself when cornered by Ajax and Achilles near Rio de Plata in the Pursuit of Graf Spee event; to get S Rank, the Commander must destroy her before she can do so. Also, one of her lines refers to her ultimate fate. note
  • Companion Cube: Her dual-rig is downsized for her two alternate skins, appearing as two mechanical sharks that follow her as if they were dogs.
  • Exit Villain, Stage Left: In the second map of her mini-event, she flees after being reduced to one bar of health.
  • Lethal Chef: One of the St. Valentine's Day loading screens depicts her making chocolate. Admiral Hipper's horrified stare, Z46's look of shock and the fact that the chocolate is glowing implies that she's not exactly the best cook.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Spee started out as a lonely soldier of the sea, on both sides. She believed her claws cemented her position as a weapon and is disqualified from forming intimate relationships with people.
"My hands exist to grasp tightly onto victory...even if it means I cannot hug someone important to me, I can't do much about it."
  • Monster Girl: Turns out she actually has a shark tail and it's not just a mere part of the motif of her class.
  • Morality Pet: Her alternate outfits and the new voice lines she gets therein suggest she's this to a number of the Ironblood shipgirls who serve your Azur Lane; Deutsch is outright made a less frightening person by her presence and loves her dearly, Eugen is the one who taught her to use makeup, and she evidently knows how to get Hipper to loosen up and can cut right through her Tsundere streak.
  • Noodle Incident: In Ajax' questline, it is mentioned that Ajax gifted her a Virgin Killer Sweater.
  • Protectorate: Spee to Deutschland as mentioned in Deutschland's tab, the Ironblood faction to Spee. After Spee warmed to life in the base, those she wanted to protect extends to you, your base and all your other ship girls regardless of faction.
    • Her entire personal story revolves around Spee trying to learn what she wanted for herself, and eventually realized that she is content and happy just living a peaceful daily life and helping others she encountered in this peaceful place. When she mistakenly thought that sirens were about to storm the base, her blood boiled and she swore she will protect this place with her life.
    • Just take a listen to her "Enter Battle" lines in her various outfits.
"For the honor and interests of Ironblood. Glory to Ironblood!" (Default Outfit)
"You mustn't hurt those in the campus." (Her Maiden's Sunday School Uniform)
"For everyone who has been so kind to me......you shall not take another step forward!" (Her Peaceful Everyday outfit)
"You shall not disturb those in this banquet!" (Her Banquet of Unknown Evening Dress)
  • Reluctant Warrior: Somewhat. Unlike her sister, Spee's lines made it clear she does not enjoy combat for the sake of it but considers herself to be a weapon made for war, and therefore to fight is her singular duty. Even after opening up, she'd still do so to protect all she holds dear.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Many times.
    • If you marry her, the scene will involve you hugging her with her claws still on. She is taking in every second of it.
    • All her other skins show her without her claws on usually have lines showing that she is making friends everywhere in the Ironblood family and beyond, including even her former enemy Ajax, who apparently sometimes play tricks on her. If a scene in the personal story of Ajax is of any indication, the two are on good terms.
  • Wolverine Claws: In her default skin and Idol skins, she has a pair of massive, clawed gauntlets. Her High School skin also has one...made of snacks.

    The Admiral Hipper-class

Class-wide Tropes

  • Historical In-Joke: The sisters' different rarity level, as well as their various bust sizes and the jokes around it are nods to their construction history; Hipper was initially built with a straight stem, but later refitted with a curvier clipper bow after doing what were basically her sea trials (Interestingly, the game sort of acknowledges this by increasing her bust size in her Muse form). Subsequently, Blucher was modified to also include this mid-construction, and the later ships were built like this from the get go. There's also the fact of their differing displacements: Hipper and Blucher weighed 18,200 tons at full load, Eugen was 19,050 tons full load, and Seydlitz as well as Lutzow were the heaviest with 20,100 tons clocked at full load (Seydlitz was later slimmed down to 17.139 tons as-designed after her conversion to her Weser carrier form hence her Elite designation, but the displacement would be easily bloated to over 20,000 tons if the Kriegsmarine ever managed to supply her air wing).
  • One Degree of Separation: Downplayed as it hasn't seen in their story proper, but Tallinn's Juustagram post in the Khorovod's Rime event implies that Hipper, Eugen, and Weser cannot recognize their sister after her expatriation to the Northern Union.
    • Either that, or they know, but tries to play it cool so as not to get Tallinn teased by the Soviet ships.
  • Stone Wall: All sisters have some form of skills that enhances defense, either a buff or shields. And yes, this includes Tallinn, who is considered to be in her own subclass in the game as well as in a different faction.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: The sisters really love their alcohol, and while their can drink other types of booze, beer seems to be their go-to drink, playing up their German stereotype even further (even Tallinn, who has been expatriated, still likes to drink it despite her comrades pushing her to drink vodka).

Huh? You're the Commander? Is the situation so desperate that they let just about any random Tom, Dick, or Harry be a Commander!?

  • A-Cup Angst: One of her lines has her telling Prinz Eugen to stop calling her a flat-chested grump with an attitude problem. It doesn't help that she's the only slim figured sister of her family, or that Eugen loves teasing her sister about her bust size. Episode 11 of the anime gives us this exchange:
Prinz Eugen: Oh, my sister, did you lose your optimism along with your breasts?
Admiral Hipper: I'm going to slap you around!
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has short twin side-tails, which compounds her Tsundere main quirk further.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She has a really short fuse, especially whenever Prinz Eugen teases her.
  • Hidden Depths: In her downtime, she's shown to enjoy coffee, is quite knowledgeable about gardening, and is quick to fix a busted stove for Z23 and Laffey without a complaint during one of Valentine's segments of Slow Ahead. Naturally, once someone expresses surprise or compliments her knowledge she immediately races back to tsundere mode.
  • Modesty Shorts: Not too obvious in her standard art, but you can see them. Made clear in Slow Ahead.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: She found a kindred spirit in Nagisa, with whom she shares a lot of traits (and drinks, which as usual is remarked by Eugen on Nagisa's Juustagram post).
  • Stone Wall: Particularly tough though compared to her sister, she trades in some HP for mildly better offensive stats and the "Vice Defense" ("All or Nothing" in Asian versions) skill which halves damage when activated. This might allow her to take more damage than her sister.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Schweinshaxe* and beer (which she shares with her sister Tallinn)
  • Tsundere: Well, she's basically Asuka Langley Souryu with blonde hair, so it comes with the territory.

Blücher

"Heheh☆ It's me, Blücher, reporting in to serve my sweet, sweet Commander♪"

  • Cute Little Fangs: Has a small yet noticeable once if her mouth is open.
  • The Cutie: Extremely kind to the Commander, with a similarly cute appearance to boot. Even Admiral Hipper herself likes her.
  • Devoted to You: Almost every single one of her lines (if it's not a tease towards her sisters) is about how much she loves the Commander.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Sports some just like her sister.
  • Love at First Sight: Similar to Cheshire of the Royal Navy, she takes an immediate admiration for the Commander, falling in love with them in first sight and being utterly dedicated to please them.
  • Love Martyr: Her "Disappointed" line has her admit that something is wrong with the Commander, but she still loves them anyways, hoping things will get better.
  • Nice Girl: Very kind towards the Commander. In fact, she's one of the few ships that if she's "Disappointed", she admits something is wrong with the Commander, but is still in love with them no matter what.
  • The Power of Love: Her skill activation line implies she's using her power of her love for the Commander to activate. In fact, her defensive skill is called "Unstoppable Love".
  • Stone Wall: Comes with the class, but compared with her other sisters (including Tallinn) she has less health but more firepower than them. Additionally, her skill "Unstoppable Love" lets her tank damage up to 30% once her health is below 50%.
  • The Tease: To her sister Hipper. One of her secretary lines has her teasingly ask her to cuddle with the Commander. She also teases Eugen that she'll turn her blonde if she's sortied with her during a boss fight.

Mmm… Are you the Commander? I wonder how long you're going to amuse me. I'm expecting something from you.

  • The Alcoholic: While she isn't as bad as Laffey, both her New Year's skin and her Formal Wear skin have her quite drunk. In this case, it's usually played more on the Hard-Drinking Party Girl side of things, though there is a definite, more serious undercurrent to her behavior if you pay attention, especially in her Formal Wear skin.
  • Badass Boast: Her victory quote.
"*Yawns* ... Battleships? Nothing but small fry."
  • Beneath the Mask: She appears apathetic and uncaring because she, by her own admission (when you oath her), felt empty inside when you first met her.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Requests one of Yat Sen's Baozi.. and "enhances" them with Mayonnaise. If asked how it was, Hipper will admit that it was "surprisingly good".
  • Born Lucky: While known as a lucky ship in real life, she resents being called lucky, instead claiming she's just really tough. Interestingly, her Luck stat is pretty high at 78, but not sky-high like you might expect (compare Yukikaze at an almighty 98). Once the commander oaths her she's shown to move beyond this hang-up, as one of her idle lines in her wedding skin has her muse just how lucky she's feeling.
  • Breakout Character: While early SSR/SR (CN and EN's name for the rarity) ships generally became popular, her popularity is such that a number of later Ironblood ships take inspiration from her such as Prinz Heinrich and Agir.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has larger boobs than her older sister, which she enjoys tormenting her about. She especially pokes fun at ships like Hipper, Queen Elizabeth, and Amazon for being blonde, having attitudes, and lacking "assets".
"Is it a tradition for you all to be so flat?"
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: Despite her love of all things boozy, she is infamous for getting tipsy very easily. During her scene in "The Many Lives of Maids" event, she happily downplays this, only to resume being a drunken mess several glasses of wine later.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She asks the Commander in her Oath skin if he did not happen to peek at other girls, She mentions that Commander seems to be very popular due to numbers of mails he receives.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She is rather sarcastic and often takes jabs at the Commander, and given the dialogue with other ships as well.
  • Death Seeker: Implied to be one in her very In Harm's Way combat lines.
"This isn't enough at all. I need more, more......!"
    "Hoho......Interesting......"
    "Hohohohoho......you guys are great......"
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Downplayed. When you oath her, she will tease you like she used to, and then reveals that she is already not as empty inside as she used to be, thanks to you.
  • Dragon Ascendant: For lack of any other clear right hand woman for Bismarck, Eugen appears to take up the mantle of leadership for the Ironblood, though there has yet to be an event to properly show the inner workings of the faction following Bismarck's apparent demise. Inverted Orthant shows that while she is high in the chain of command, she ultimately answers to Friedrich Der Grosse, who, according to Tower of Transcendence, considers herself The Heavy to Bismarck.
    • In her Zwei form Bismarck outright says that one could consider Eugen to be her right hand.
  • Foil:
    • The playable one acts as one to her friend, Prince of Wales. Eugen is extremely apathetic and snarky, likes to tease people, and is Born Lucky. Wales keeps a Stiff Upper Lip, is highly driven, encourages the Commander and her allies to do their best, does her best to cheer people up or encourage others to cheer people up, and is supremely unlucky. They are both named for princes, to boot.
    • To Enterprise. Both are famously "lucky" ships that seemed to lead singularly charmed careers, surviving many battles but being forced to witness their sisters and comrades-in-arms fall to the fortunes of war, with both implied to have a fair amount of Survivor's Guilt over their "luck."
  • Embarrassing Nickname: The non-comedic type. Eugen makes it clear to you she does not like being called "the lucky ship". If you call her by that title, she will ask if you are taunting her.
    • Although not explicitly stated, there are multiple hints this is a sign that Eugen is concealing some amount of angst over her past. note  This also puts Eugen's love of booze in a rather different light.
  • The Gadfly: Tends to tease the commander and other ships. It's her way of dealing with her apathetic nature. If the commander wins her heart, she loses her apathy, but she continues to affectionately tease them.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has short twintails on the side.
  • I Shall Taunt You: After convincing Noshiro to spar with her in a ceremonial skirmish, Eugen hurls various insults at Noshiro's combat capability and even towards the Sakura Empire itself in an attempt to anger her. It was successful.
  • Jumped at the Call: When Bismarck returns at the climax of Rondo at Rainbow's End, dissolves the Crimson Axis, realigns the Ironblood with Azur Lane, and orders a full scale attack on the sirens Memphis notes that Eugen and her fleet is instantly the first to turn and opens fire.
  • Ms. Fanservice: One of the game's standouts. Eugen is sexy and she knows it. All of her character skins show a fair amount of, well, skin in the right places, she's flirty and all too happy to tease people, has little issue with being groped, and all of this is amplified when she's drunk. In Slow Ahead she even keeps her Valentine's chocolate for the commander between her breasts, assuring Javelin that them melting there is entirely the point so she can give herself to him with the chocolate.
  • No Hero to His Valet: She is one of two Ironbloods who doesn't take Bismarck's posturing and will call her out. For context the only other two people who see through Bismarck are Tirpitz and the commander. In contrast, Bismarck herself admits to be the one who has a hard time reading Eugen.
  • Number Two: Seems to be Bismarck's designated second-in-command given her overall leadership of the Iron Blood seen in Aurora Noctis and having sufficient clearance to arrange and co-ordinate allied envoy visits and them getting to see Top Secret stuff in Inverted Orthant on her own say-so. This is also the case in Crosswave.
    • One of Bismarck Zwei's secretary lines has her outright refer to Eugen as her right hand.
  • Odd Friendship: The playable Eugen has one with Prince of Wales, despite being one of the ships responsible for Wales' first great failure. Wales is apparently the one who put her up to wearing her infamous bikini.
  • Sentimental Drunk: Her New Year's skin is what happens when she gets into the Sakura Empire's sake supply. She loses most of her snarkiness (one of her lines has her calling the Sakura Empire "stingy" and wishing they'd bring some liquor from the Eastern Radiance) and would rather just drink with the commander...and anyone else.
    "Commander~ Let's have a drink~ and two more drinks~ ahh...Let's keep going~"
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: While not to the point of shamelessly craving the Commander's sexual attention like Taihou, Eugen nevertheless has no issue flirting, teasing people (including her sister, much to the latter's annoyance) and doesn't mind being groped or dressing/acting lewdly. This is even more pronounced when she's drunk.
  • Sideboob: A recurring element of her various outfits is that most of them reveal an ample amount of the sides of her breasts and make sure that the beauty mark on her right breast remains visible.
  • Skinship Grope: In addition to her being a hardcore tease, Eugen tends to get very touchy-feely with other shipgirls.
  • Stepford Smiler: Possibly. At the very least, Z1 outright accuses her faking her smile too often if you sortie them together.
  • Stone Wall: Has the highest HP among all non-prototype heavy cruisers in the game (more than some battleships to boot), and her Unbreakable Shield skill lets her block a good number of enemy shells, making her very difficult to sink both in PvE and in PvP. This comes at the cost of her offensive stats. This is a nod for all the damage she's sustained and how two nukes were not enough to (immediately) sink her.
  • Stripperiffic: Her summer skin has her wear a barely-there bikini, to the point it's censored in the CN server. Her New Year's outfit has her wearing a rather revealing (sideboob) kimono.

"Are you the Commander? I'm Prinz Eugen, Iron Blood heavy cruiser. Let's shake hands and be friends~ I'm looking forward to having a lot of fun. Heehee~"

  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: In just her art alone, she's made a drawing of spit roasting a manjuu alive, and squishing the manjuu accompanying her too hard, to the point it wrote out a silent cry of "HELP". In her lines, she's often being as flirty as her adult self.

The version of Admiral Hipper augmented by Muse Weapon technology. She's Polaris' guitarist.
  • Fanservice Pack: She's seen with a modest but noticeable bustline, an improvement from her practically flat chest.
  • Rockers Smash Guitars: Her idle chibi animation has her being so embarrassed by something that she elects to smash her guitar just to stop it.
  • Stone Wall: Downplayed rather heavily as this version lost her Vice Defense but has a better functioning shield skill and her other skill is effectively a damage buff.

    The Roon-class

Roon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roon_4.png
I can't believe I'm here now… Hello, my name is Roon. I don't know this place very well yet, so could I please ask you to show me around?

The personification of the Roon, introduced as part of the World of Warships collaboration.

  • Artistic License – History: Wargaming/Lesta made her up, she never existed historically in any form. To explain: Wargaming/Lesta never found any documentation of any Kriegsmarine heavy cruiser designs that use triple turret 203mm gunsnote  that could work as successor to the Admiral Hipper-class, which forced them to design their own ships. They did this by combining a on-paper 1938 Krupp-designed 203mm triple turret they found with a speculative enlargement of the Leipzig-class hull, which was designed to support triple 150mm turrets, as a heavy cruiser. (This is also why Roon in AL looks more than a bit like Leipzig.) And like Mainz above, Roon was the name of a Kaiserliche Marine vessel, specifically an armored cruiser.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Her ammo type switching skill, such a thing does sound awesome, but the fact it cycles every so often can impact her DPS against a bigger enemy. Now if it got reworked to have a way to control it...
  • Ax-Crazy: In battle, it's very clear she's insanely murderous while not showing it out of battle... until you pledge her.
  • Beehive Barrier: Roon has arguably the strongest shield skill among all vanguard ships at the time of her release, generating 3 layers of total 4 rotating shields of different rotation speeds every 30 seconds, each can last until 15 seconds have passed or if they were struck by 8 bullets. The evolved form of this skill activates when Roon enters battle. A number of later ships like Zara would functionally surpass her.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: Part of Roon's rigging includes a mechanical tail that ends in a deadly point. Drawings Terras has done of her since her release suggest it's detachable.
  • Blood Knight: She heavily enjoys ripping apart enemies to pieces.
  • Cute and Psycho: She does have calm moments when acting as secretary, but in combat, she's depicted as having many screws loose. And once you oath her, even her dock-side lines become viewable in a new, frightening light.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She has a soft spot for cute things such as meowfficers.
  • Gathering Steam: Roon enters the battle with lower a reload stat than most heavy cruisers, which means longer time between gunshots and torpedoes. However, her Professional Reloader skill allows her to increase her reload speed as well as change ammo type with every shot of her main guns and the reload bonus stacks, eventually capping at twelve times to a whopping 42% increase. At this point, she turns into a machine gun of a heavy cruiser firing enough shots of both types to effectively tear into just about anything in her way.
  • Historical In-Joke: Despite never existing, even in blueprints, her general appearance is one - she looks a lot like Leipzig, which is likely because when Wargaming made her, her design was based on an enlarged Leipzig-class hull.
  • Jekyll & Hyde: Kind of subverted for there is no distinct split in her personality. She is soft-spoken at the base, gives hugs to all the ships returning from tasks, will cook for you and other ships, declared she wanted to heal your heart, but she also thoroughly enjoys ripping enemies into metal shreds. She also harbour intense envy for the other ships when she falls in love with you, but she doesn't turn hostile to them. She is just...kind of all of these things, combined.
    • Her Chapter in Slow Ahead shows this well as she easily switches from kind and caring to scary and back rather easily.
    • One of her Juustagram posts during Universe in Union show that she's very much aware how scary she can be, saying she's trying to smile at a meowfficer as nicely as she can. The meowfficer is still scared shitless.
  • Megaton Punch: In Crosswave she's shown subdueing her own rigging with a punch and in Slow Ahead, she easily smashes through both a large fallen tree and the Cattery's door that it was obstructing.
  • Power of Love: Subverted - she says something alluding to this when her affection is maxed, but it turns out when pledged that it is actually Power Of Hate instead. Given that she pretty obviously comes to love her commander over time there's also a chance that she runs on both.
  • Psycho Prototype: She is easily the most unhinged out of the World of Warships paper ships, which in the universe of Azur Lane, seem to have been built to fight Sirens.
  • Shout-Out: Both her "Professional Reloader" and "All Rounded Armor" skills are references to World of Warships: "Professional Reloader" is to "Expert Loader" captain skill note  and "Well Rounded Armor" is to German turtleback armornote .
  • Scary Scorpions: Like a scorpion's tail, Roon's rigging emerges from her back, while her four mobile shields surround her like a scorpion's pincer or legs. For bonus points, she is also depicted as a battle crazy Blood Knight who enjoys tearing enemies from limb to limb.
  • Throat Light: Not her own mouth, but rather, her rigging's mouth has some sort of glowing device in it.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pudding, and she is, unsurprisingly, violently protective of it. She makes clear that she will make an effort to extract it from any poor soul dumb enough to try to steal it from her.
  • Wolverine Claws: Very low-key, but if you look closely, you can see her gauntlets have bladed fingertips on both hands. Her party dress reveals that underneath, she has some Femme Fatalons with a red-to-black gradient going on.
  • Yandere: Normally she doesn't exhibit any yandere-like traits, but if you pledge to her, her pledge line shows that she's murderously jealous of other girls. However, she doesn't have any other particular yandere traits and it seems to instead be a result of mixing her already violent, murderous personality with love for her commander, rather than a particular sort of unhinged romanticism.

Roon (Muse)

Artist: Byzzul

  • Beehive Barrier: Similar to her regular counterpart, she too can summon shields, one of which soaks up shots, while the other harms enemies on contact
  • Fanservice Pack: Looks a considerable degree more buxom than usual to the point where she only seems smaller than Muse!Taihou than quite dwarfed.
  • Idol Singer: In the "Universe in Unison" event, as part of the duet act Verheerender with Taihou.
  • Leitmotif: Kanjou LOYALTY*, shared with Taihou as part of the Verheerender duet act.
  • Loud of War: Combination of this and Power of Rock or Disco Tech, thanks to her rigging seemingly having been obtained from Band Land.
  • Necessary Drawback: Largely averted; she has the same stats at level 100 or higher as her original self at Development level 30 and packs a largely more practical if offensive leaning kit. However her base stats at level 1 is the same as a freshly built Roon (which is in some ways, weaker than a normal unit).

Prinz Heinrich

Hello there, Commander~! I'm the P-class armored ship, Prinz Heinrich. My little friend here is called Eisen... Hey, Eisen! Introduce yourself to the commander normally... Wait, how many times have I told you not to chew on others' clothes?!

  • Animal Motif: Rabbits; the two ends of the hair bow she wears on top of her head move and act like rabbit ears, and the swimsuit skin introduced in the December 2022 Beachside Vacation event is called "Rabbit on Watch" with bunny ears attached to the ball cap that matches her bright red lifeguard style swimsuit.

  • Artistic License – History:
    • Not quite as bad as Roon, but Heinrich still takes liberties, needless to say, as she was never actually built (which normally would make her a research ship rather than a regular one; she's similar in this vein to the Kii-class); the P-class called for a design of twelve heavy cruisers (or rather, panzerschiffes considering its status) to be built as part of Grand Admiral Erich Raeder's Plan Z rearmament, but the vessesl were cancelled wholesale before the war even began, in part due to severe design deficiencies. Primarily designed as a successor to the Deutschland-class after the preceding D-class cruisers were cancelled, the P-class incorporated design features from both classes, including the infamous 283 mm main guns in two triple turret configuration (as seen in Heinrich's rigging). Further, like Mainz and Roon, Prinz Heinrich was the name of a Kaiserliche Marine vessel (and interestingly, all three are cruisers, with Roon and Heinrich being armored cruisers which were sort of the predecessor of heavy cruisers). Manjuu also did, sort of, what they did with Suruga in giving a name to a ship that never had one, though unlike Suruga, "Prinz Heinrich" was never even formally ordered. (The name does follow the logic and Theme Naming generally used, though - German heavy cruisers were mostly named after important German historical figures, (or in the case of Roon and Mainz, resurrecting old Imperial German Navy ships) as in the case of Deutschland- and Admiral Hipper-class ships. And thus, the P-class = Prinz Heinrich.)
    • There is one more sticky wicket here, however; the original Prinz Heinrich had been explicitly named for the brother of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Prinz Albert Wilhelm Heinrich von Preußen. As Ol' Willy and his family were rather unpopular with the Nazi leadership (and perhaps even less popular with the German public) by the 1930s and 40s, it seems highly unlikely that any Kriegsmarine vessel would ever bear the name of any member of the Hohenzollern family. It's much more likely she would have been named after a WWI or 19th-century German military figure, or if completed a bit later (as detailed under Friedrich's entry) after a figure from the Holy Roman Empire.
  • BFG: She can use the same Triple 283mm (SK C/28) turrets that the Deutschland class can use, though in her case it could be argued that it is preferable to better guns due to coolown issues with her main offensive skill, which has a 7 second cooldown between activation.
  • Blood Knight: Gets quite excited (in a Genki Girl way) about the prospect of a good fight and a chance to show what she can do.
  • Companion Cube: Her rigging, which she calls Eisen. Her chapter in Slow Ahead suggests its personality is akin to an overenthusiastic dog, though one that can carry a sleeping Laffey.
  • The Ditz / Book Dumb: Look, she's enthusiastic but isn't... the brightest bulb in the lamp. She's not much of a reader, often struggles to pay attention to what's being said to her, and in general barrels through fights and whatnot on instinct more than with any tactical acumen. She also struggles quite hard to study, whenever that comes up. That said, she isn't stupid - she can still identify threats and (usually) knows how to make sure her friends stay out of trouble - but trying to apply military discipline or strategic thinking to her usually goes Very Poorly. Often to Strasser's frustration, since she's usually the one directly above Heinrich in the chain of command in story events.
  • Going Commando: Dishwasher1910 confirmed on Twitter that Heinrich doesn't wear panties, meaning that with her breasts on display the way they are, she just flat out doesn't wear underwear.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Never does anything to intentionally provide fanservice despite her attire and ample curves. (A couple lines in her New Year's skin implies she's not totally unaware of how she looks, though.)
  • Underboobs: A striking thing about her design is that her top doesn't fully cover her, and so as per Going Commando, her underboobs are pretty visible.

Heya, I'm P-class armored cruiser Prinz Adalbert. All P-class ships are a force to be reckoned with, at least according to Heinrich. So yeah, if you need some nasties taken care of, just gimme a call~

  • Artistic License – History: She inherits pretty much everything that her sister has on this front, all the way down to being named after another Hohenzollern, which again, the NSDAP would probably have sooner set themselves on fire than do. Granted, here there's also a little more justification - aside from the ship name simply being extant (bonus points for Adalbert being a modified version of Heinrich the armored cruiser), Heinrich Wilhelm Adalbert von Preussen was in fact the originator and founder of the fleet that would, by turns, become the modern German navy. So it's possible the Kriegsmarine might've ended up using the name, if enough of the naval staff made a fuss of wanting to honor the navy's history, though the Nazi leadership likely would've taken steps to distance the name from the (wildly unpopular) Hohenzollerns.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: While she's more serious than her sister in plot events (though that's not hard), she still has some trouble focusing, especially as your secretary at port. She herself is aware of it, but she also just kind of rolls with it.
Heya, Commander, I got those documents you asked for... Took longer than you expected? Yeah, uhh... I ran into Magdeburg and went jogging with her, then Heinrich and I played with Eisen, and after that... Yeah, I kinda lost track of time...
  • Girlish Pigtails: In noted contrast to her absolute lion of a sister. Adalbert's hair is done up in a pair of shortish (if bushy and voluminous) pigtails that don't reach her shoulders, and even if she let her hair down, it doesn't appear it'd go all the way down her shoulderblades. It also matches her rather innocent personality as a playable ship.
  • Nice Girl: She's very friendly and is always making rounds on the base to see if anyone requires assistance.
  • Not So Above It All: Her maid cafe skin has a lot of shades of this; once she's off the clock (and perhaps has a little of The Good Beer in her), she's able to be even more flirty and teasing than Heinrich, and a good deal more conscious about it, while in a normal work setting (e.g. her default skin) she's a lot more down to earth than Heinrich, if still rather casual.
  • Wrench Wench: Far moreso than any other Ironblood shipgirl, Adalbert's entire aesthetic is based around this. This is actually part of the contrast with her sister, as Heinrich would never have the discipline for mechanical work of that sort, but her voice lines and promotional art suggest she gets into it fairly often.
  • You Look Familiar: She looks a lot like her sister, to the point that some accuse her of just being a copied design with a different hairstyle and outfit. Dishwasher, for his part, asserts that the similarity is specifically intentional (and was basically part of the commission from Manjuu) and they're meant to appear much more like twins compared to other "sister ships".

Full art
I am Iron Blood cruiser Hindenburg. Shipgirls such as I are apparently known as "blueprint ships"... a title I couldn't care less about. As long as you prove your might and don't bore me, I will obey the contract we've made.

Personification of the Hindenburg, she is released as part of the sixth research collaboration with World of Warships

  • Artistic License – Ships: Hindenburg is pretty much a Roon variant built into a different hull. To elaborate: While both are designed with Krupp's triple 203 mm turret as the foundation, Roon is based off an enlarged Leipzig's hull in 3-turret configuration as per Leipzig's design. On the other hand, Hindenburg uses a modified Admiral Hipper-class hull (specifically Prinz Eugen) in which Wargaming just decides to pop in the turret in place of all four of Eugen's own turrets, along with several modifications (in World of Warships, Hindenburg lacks an enclosed admiral’s bridge, the use of the older Dop. L. C/31d mounts for the 105mm secondary battery, and the improper use of 20mm instead of 30mm short-range anti-aircraft guns to complement the medium range 55mm medium-range guns).
  • Deal with the Devil: She considers her work with the Commander as this, to the point of giving the nickname of "Contract Binder"
  • Fiery Redhead: Has extremely bright red hair but never raises her voices, instead her dialogue comes as cold and hammy.
  • Hidden Depths: Post-oath, while still cold and non-chalant, she does not seem to mind to use her tail to the Commander for something like giving mails
Hindenburg: A letter for you. Take it... Yes, I gave you it with my tail rather than my hands. And what of it?
  • Ms. Fanservice: Just look at her, did we really need to explain the obvious? Especially someone created by Yunsang?
  • The Nose Knows: Her sortie line for Roon flat out says she's dangerous, and she's quite right about that. Which is amusing considering that Hindenburg is technically Roon's "sister" to a certain extent as explained above.
  • Obviously Evil: May be even more obvious than freaking Friedrich der Große of all ships! What, with her ram-like demon horns, her wings and her tail? Not helping matters is that her color scheme is Red and Black and Evil All Over, with her red hair and black outfit. Did we mention that her rigging looks utterly demonic?
  • Vapor Wear: She's clearly not wearing a bra under that outfit... unless the thing that covers them is the bra itself.

    The Ägir-class

Ägir

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gir_0.png
I am Ägir, named after the very same mythological ruler of the sea. Though, compared to a god who smote adversaries with storms and crashing waves, my way of dealing with my enemies is much more subdued. Ahahaha.

  • The Alcoholic: Much like many of her Iron Blood compatriots, she is an avid consumer of beer.
  • Artistic License – History: Like her fellow World of Warships collaboration shipgirls, Ägir was little more than a planned project for a high-speed, super-heavy O-class cruiser, which were essentially an enlarged P-class panzerschiffe hull as a battlecruiser. With her setup in Azur Lane, she is essentially a Composite Character between Odin (using a CB version of the latter's gun) and Prinz Heinrich in large cruiser form (amusingly, the original SMS Odin and Ägir were part of the same Odin-class coastal battleships/defense ship, and had it not for Wargaming giving her 305 mm guns to differentiate her from her "sister" ship Siegfried, the original O-class design called for essentially using the Bismarck-class's 380 mm guns. Let that sink in for a moment.)
  • Chuunibyou: She takes immense pride in her name and acts in a manner befitting of a mighty lord of the sea. Some of her voicelines (especially at higher affection) betray this, however, revealing her to be a bit of a dork and a Tsundere.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Her L2D maid outfit includes some rather direct hand gestures as well as some 'torturing' of a Manjuu with her finger.
  • Dressed Like a Dominatrix: Her sheer black bodysuit leaves very little to the imagination, and some of her animations has her crack out a whip. Ägir herself, however, is not so much of a domineering person. Instead, she is a more mature version of Prinz Eugen and her teasing personality.
  • Hellish Pupils: One thing that distinguishes her from her peers is the slit pupils in her golden eyes, as if to add more demonic flair to her overall intimidating appearance, to say nothing of her monstrous rigging.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Ägir is an alternate spelling for Aegir, a jötunn and the personification of the sea in Norse Mythology. She even lampshades her namesake in her introductory line. Her personality draws from it in a few ways like a love of drinking.
  • Vapor Wear: Her Iron Blood's Dragon maid skin makes it clear she is NOT wearing any panties.
