Vichya Dominion

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/300px_vf_1.png

Ship prefix: MNF

Representing the Marine Nationale of France... as operated by the Vichy government of occupied France during the war. This faction was introduced during the 'Iris of the Light and the Dark' event, and nearly all their vessels come from that event. Like the Iris Libre faction, their designs are pretty ornamented, but they typically take a black and red color scheme. They are aligned with Crimson Axis alliance, but not willingly. At heart, they really aren't much different than their Iris Libre brethren, being able to synergize with them (as they all used to be part of the same navy) and much like the IL, "faction" buffs on the ships tend to include both groups.

    open/close all folders

Faction-wide Tropes

  • Big Damn Reunion: After the events of The Fool's Scales the Iris Libre and Vichya Dominion factions formally reunite back into the Iris Orthodoxy.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: They tend to have a darker color scheme to contrast Richelieu's Iris Libre fleet, and they're antagonistic, but they're not outright villains, rather they act on their own code of honor, but because it is diametrically opposed to Richelieu's orders they are labeled traitors to the scripture.
  • Knight Templar: They're literally functioned as this within the Orthodoxy.
  • Les Collaborateurs: From the outside, they're seen as this, but they're more of The Remnant. note
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: A shared property of nearly all known Iris Libre and Vichya Dominion main fleet ships. Along with their Vichya sisters, no Iris battleship or battlecruiser followed the conventional battleship firing rules of one shot plus an additional salvo at first and third limit break until the introduction of Flandre in PR Series 6 in July 2023. In Vichya's case, Dunkerque and Jean Bart have main gun preload but only one additional salvo and Gascogne (and Gascogne Muse) can aim both of her salvoes separately (but reloads both at the same time).
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Befitting their allegiance to the villainous Crimson Axis, a number of them have primarily red and black colour schemes.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Referred to as the Curia of Vichya in the First Annivesary Artbook and Chinese version promo material. Strangely, even the Japanese version tends to refer to them as "Vichya Dominion" when spelling out the name in anglo-roman letters. One loading screen (featuring Jean Bart) can't even decide whether the spelling should be "Vichya" or "Vichiya."

Vauquelin

Artist: Vilor

"Tadaah! Nameship of the Vauquelin-class large destroyers, Vauquelin, has arrived in style! Hey, what's so funny? I may not look strong, but I am! Um, probably!"

  • A-Cup Angst: 'Slow Ahead' has her remarking that she doesn't have the body for a swimsuit like Tartu does.
  • Idiot Hair: Vauquelin has a positively enormous ahoge, perhaps reflecting how despite her attempts to appear very serious, she often doesn't think things through fully, like proposing a joust with Jeanne d'Arc before promptly realizing she would be badly outmatched by Jeanne's swordsmanship. It's her best known trait.
  • Support Party Member: Buffs herself and her sister (only Tartu is in the game currently)

Tartu

Rarity: Elite
Artist: Hecha

"Good day, Commander. I'm Tartu of the Vauquelin-class. ...Huh? Oh, I'm so sorry, I got caught up in thinking about how large the port is..."

  • Cloudcuckoolander: She definitely marches to the beat of her own drummer. In her debut event, Vauquelin has to work fairly hard at keeping her on task, and as a playable shipgirl in port, there's her intro quote above, as well as things like her walking into a tree branch or giving herself a pep talk in her various port lines. Chapter 51 in Slow Ahead is also centered on her pursuit of maturity in such a fashion.
......Oh, sorry, who got MVP again? Oh, it was me?
  • Support Party Member: Buffs french cruisers of both types, incidentally foreshadowing the next event which introduces some more cruisers.

    The Le Fantasque-class

Le Malin

Voiced by: Haruka Shiraishi

ID: No. 394
Rarity: Super Rare
Artist: Kincora

"I am one of the Le Fantasque-class, the poisoned blade which protects Vichya Dominion - Super Destroyer "Le Malin", ready for orders."

  • Breakout Character: Her lazy demeanor, exotic yet adorable appearance, and the contrast of her initial seriousness with her "real" personality, lead her to be the most popular ship by far in the rerun of 'Iris of Light and Dark'. She ended up making it to Crosswave's downloadable content as a playable character and has starred in a video using a 3D model - an honor so far otherwise reserved for fellow breakout character and poster girl Sirius.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Her Listless Lapin skin has her wear a Stripperriffic Playboy Bunny suit that consists of ribbons wrapped around her upper body- with two loose flaps covering her breasts- and a skintight white pantyhose. She is also sitting with her back facing the screen, giving players a view of her hindquarters, which shakes. In addition, she is also (barely) sitting on a Manjuu.
  • Irony:
    • She's part of Vichiya Dominion, even though in real life she defected to the Free French Navy after the Battle of Dakar.
    • For someone who is famous for being The Slacker, she starred in a video about thoroughly washing your hands and gargling, and historically was one of the fastest destroyers ever built.
  • Sideboob: In her Listless Lapin skin, along with a considerable amount of bouncing.
  • The Slacker: If her alternate skins didn't clue you in, she has a massive lazy streak.
  • Stripperiffic: Very much so in the Live-2D Listless Lapin skin, which seems to be made of ribbons wrapped around her, and only has two loose flaps covering her breasts, which move quite a bit. If her back wasn't turned, we'd be getting a peep show every time she breathed.

"I am Templar Knight L'Indomptable, Le Fantasque-class large destroyer. As my name states, this proud knight shall neither cede a single step, nor back down before any foe!"

  • Big Sister Worship: For both Le Malin and Le Triomphant. By contrast she doesn't seem fond of Le Terrible.
  • Black Swords Are Better: She's quite proud of her black lance, and one of her skills is named for it.
  • Historical In-Joke: Her similar hairstyle to Le Malin and hero worship of her may refer to how her bow was eventually used to repair her sister ship after L'Indomptable was scuttled in Toulon.
  • Odango Hair: A trait shared with Le Malin.
  • One-Steve Limit: Her name can also translate as "The Indomitable", not to be confused with the Royal Navy's Indomitable.
  • Tsundere: She addresses the Commander as "pleb" in most of her voice lines. And even in her pledge line she goes tsun.
Is a ritual like this required for me to become yours? And I even have to wear this ring too? ...Very well. Then let us move on to exchanging vows! ...Hold hands? Then go on a date? Wh-wh-what are you talking about? Y-y-you've tricked me, haven't you?!

Light Cruisers (CL)

    The La Galissonnière-class

Artist: Suisai

"Vichya, Sardegna, Iron Blood... and now this place? Ah well, doesn't matter to me 'long as I get to have a good time. Anyway, I'm La Galissonnière from the Vichya Dominion. Nice meetin' you!"

  • Blood Knight: She has to be constantly reminded to stick to plans because otherwise she'd just attack anyone in sight. It's to the point where she doesn't take defeat badly and gets excited at low HP.
  • Cute and Psycho: La Galissonniere is both a major looker and a major psycho, with her willingness to attack anything she sees.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: She has a bloodstained axe and bemoans the fact that she is heavily discouraged from just smashing her rigging right into her enemies' faces. In-game, she has no ability to do any melee attacks, nor does she even get a bonus like Glowworm or Leipzig that encourages her to ram.
  • A Glass of Chianti: In her New Year's skin. She may not be outright evil, but she is bloodthirsty enough for it to count.
  • Handy Feet: She can grab an envelope thrown at her between the toes of one foot. While wearing stockings!
  • Hidden Depths: One of the in-game comics hints that she's really good at cooking curry (and chopping ingredients for said curry), since it was implied that her curry was an instant hit.
  • Spoiled Brat: Her violent tendencies notwithstanding, she can't stand to feel bored for more than a few minutes. She'll even complain about gifts — when you give her a red envelope full of money (a traditional Chinese New Year custom) in her Lush Spring Dream skin, her only response is to complain that you couldn't think of something more novel.
  • Status Buff: Has skills that reduces damage from cruisers, boosts her Speed/Evade in a full cruiser frontline, and boosts her Firepower and Torpedo stats.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Where she keeps your mail in her Lush Spring Dream skin. It's apparently under so much pressure that the envelopes spring out on their own, without her even having to move!

Heavy Cruisers (CA)

"Hey there ~ So you're the Commander? I'm Foch, from the Suffren class. I consider myself quite an experienced strategist, so I hope you'll find me useful ~ Ahaha, anyway, it's a pleasure to meet you ~"

  • Badass Cape: Being an action girl and all.
  • Blade Enthusiast: She's fond of knives, demonstrated by her skill "The Flawless Knife-Thrower" and she's the owner of the Flame Touched Blade that her debut event is titled after.
  • Leotard of Power: One under her uniform, although the way her uniform is designed, it's pretty visible.
  • The Strategist: Her role among the Vichya ships.

"Bonjour. From today, this heavy cruiser of the Vichya Dominion shall now be serving at this port. It's a pleasure to meet you, hehe. If it's not too much to ask, I hope that we can get along well."
—-
  • Alice Allusion: Her second skin is themed after the Queen of Hearts.
  • The Alcoholic: She has a love of liquor, revealed in a special sortie line with one of the other characters (Laffey, Grozny, Gangut), asking them if they could share their drink.
  • Cuteness Proximity: According to the Skybound Oratorio PV video and her dialogue, she is quite fond of Meowfficers and will lose her normal composure immediately when such one is near her proximity. Oathing her will grant her wish to pet those Meowficers as she pleases.
  • Foil: To Bismarck of all people considering they never crossed paths in reality. Both used corrupted wisdom cubes to access great power at the cost of their sanity to help them fight for what they saw as right, but while Bismarck breaks free of it of her own accord, and ultimately dies fighting a battle she knows she can't win against people who actively want her dead, Algérie needs Jeanne d'Arc to beat her up before she comes to, is fighting her countrymen who explicitly don't want to kill her in battle no-one could call, and ultimately survives the experience and retreats to fight another day.
    • She's also one to her conceptual successor, Saint Louis, in their faction choice and HE focuses.
  • Historical In-Joke: Her kit is a slightly different and mildly weaker take on Saint Louis' with one of her skills being the same as the other boat's "Engine Boost" effect but requires manual mode.
  • Identical Stranger: She totally doesn't look like Belfast!. Despite this, they have different artists.
  • Kill It with Fire: Her skill allows her to deal more damage to a burning target and the gun most associated with her, Twin 203mm (Mle 1924) has a slightly boosted chance of inflicting burn.
  • Ojou Ringlets: Spot one, befitting her status among Vichya knights. Her behaviour is also very elegant if not a bit flirtatious.
  • The Rival: Algérie and Zara are this to each other. In one of her Sortie lines with Zara, Algérie suggests a chance to compete to see who's better. This is a reference to Algérie being built in response to the Zara-class cruiser heavy cruisers. They are both very well-endowed ship girls donning very fanservice-y outfits and are notorious flirts.
  • Nice Girl: Flirtatious as she might be, she is genuinely a good girl at heart. Even more so after oath: her lines lean towards a caring, gentle, sweet and supportive wife.
  • The Strategist: She's this for the Vichya Dominion, and in fact, used to be this for the Iris Orthodoxy, before the split.
  • Wine Is Classy: Adding to The Alcoholic trope above, she is frequently sipping a glass of red and offers some to the Commander once they finish work.
  • Worthy Opponent: Richelieu sees her as this on an intellectual level; she's extremely careful to plan and to try to have countermeasures to anything Algérie may try.

Battlecruisers (BC)

    The Dunkerque-class

Dunkerque

Voiced by: Sayaka Harada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dunkerque_al.png
ID: No. 352
Rarity: Elite
Artist: Liduke

"At last the day has come where we can fight side by side… Nice to meet you, Commander. I'm Dunkerque. Please, let me join this wonderful fleet of yours."

  • Artistic License – Ships: In short, classifying her either way as a battleship or battlecruiser is historically controversial. The French always considered the Dunkerque-class to be battleships, while the British often considered them battlecruisers. Very broadly, like the Scharnhorst-class, most modern views lean on the side of battleship as their builders considered them to be, but the fact is that Dunkerque did have a very thin armored belt and probably does warrant her medium rated armor in Azur Lane.
  • The Atoner: She makes it quite clear that she didn't like being part of the Vichy Regime, wishing that the army had been able to hold out longer, mentioning that she's quite happy to finally be able to fight alongside her former enemies, and hoping that doing so will make the Royal Navy forgive her, even just a little, while also saying she doesn't blame them for her sinking.
  • Beef Gate: A special case. In the "Light and Dark" Extra Stage of the Iris of Light and Dark event, one of the patterns involves Dunkerque shooting a very powerful salvo aimed directly at your flagship, with enough power to heavily damage her or sink her outright and thus causing your defeat. You'll know it's coming when a timer with a "Preparing" blurb appears over her head, and the only way to stop this is to deal enough damage to Dunkerque in order to interrupt the preparations (denoted by a "guard bar" that appears underneath her lifebar for just this segment). As Dunkerque will prepare a game-ending salvo three times in total, the player needs to have a very powerful burst-focused fleet that can do that much damage three times over that relatively short period of time in order to survive this segment, unlike the other segments where the player can simply learn the bullet patterns and avoid them with practice. This effectively excludes players who don't have the right very high level ships with the right gear enhanced enough times from clearing the event. Of course, all of this can by bypassed by a fleet that can simply sink her before she ever gets a chance to fire her special attack.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The first half of "Iris of Light and Dark" revolves around her last stand at Mers-el-Kebir, during "Operation Catapult".
  • Disc-One Final Boss: It first looks like sinking Dunkerque will stop the resistance at Casablanca, but nope, Jean Bart raises the flag of rebellion right after you do.
  • Dual Boss: With Jean Bart in the Extra Stage of the Iris of Light and Dark event.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Dunkerque's red irises are nothing new in the world of Azur Lane, but a closer look at her character art reveals that she has blue pupils. This even carries over into the Slow Ahead anime.
  • Marshmallow Hell: She tries to invoke this trope when she reaches her highest affection (Love), by offering the Commander her bosom should the Commander feel the need to blow out the accumulated stress. It is up to the Commander to take on her offer or not. She is rather well-endowed to boot.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Alongside Jean Bart and Richelieu, Dunkerque is the only battleship or battlecruiser in the game with Main Gun Preload, meaning that unlike every other battleship, they start with their main guns loaded. In exchange, much like monitors and aviation battleships, they only get two volleys from their guns (but also like aviation battleships, they get 170% efficiency on their main guns, instead of 125% to 135% efficiency like most normal battleships and battlecruisers), but the preloaded shot makes them very effective against roaming Siren fleets and makes slow-firing guns like quad turrets much more useful in their hands. Her skill set leans more towards mob clearing with her special barrage.
  • Nice Girl: She is a nice girl by nature and tries her best to be friendly. She even hopes that the Royal Navy will forgive her for not joining them, even though they sunk her.
  • Supreme Chef: When it comes to making sweets, no shipgirl in the fleet is her equal.
  • Sweet Tooth: She is very fond of sweets and it can be seen in her art.

Battleships (BB)

    The Richelieu-class

Gascogne

Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gascogne_al.png
ID: Plan 012
Rarity: Priority
Artist: Liduke

"Gascogne, activation confirmed. Statement of purpose: deliver unto my maître freedom and victory. Gascogne, entering service to fulfil this mission."

The personification of the cancelled 4th Richelieu-class Gascognenote , introduced as part of the second round of the World of Warships collaboration.

  • Aggressive Negotiations: In The Fool's Scales, Gascogne, at the behest of Clemenceau, successfully ordered a very angry and mutinous Jean Bart to stand down lest she attempt more "persuasive methods."
  • The Dragon: Of Skybound Oratorio. She is the one who gives Algerie the corrupted wisdom cube (think of what happened to Bismarck), is the one relaying orders from High Command and ultimately the Crimson Axis's last throw of the dice before losing the Basilica.
  • Fun with Acronyms: The English name for her swimsuit skin is "Tropical Environs Acclimation Service Equipment". Otherwise known as TEASE.
  • Gratuitous French: An interesting variation: while her written lines always use 主 (omo, nushi or aruji, depending, and meaning "lord", "master" or even "owner"), her spoken lines consistently use maître ("master") instead, with her intro line even offering a brief note about it.
  • Holy Halo: She has a floating metallic halo that certainly looks the part.
  • The Juggernaut: One of the few 'zombie' ships available in the main fleet rather than the vanguard. Her innate durability, combined with the ability to regenerate a large portion of her health each battle while increasing her evasion, means that she will rarely, if ever, sink.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter:
    • She's completely unique among battleships in that you can aim every one of her volleys - other battleships have their first volley aimed, and then the additional volleys are aimed automatically. Like Jean Bart, Dunkerque, Georgia, and the aviation battleships, she pays for this by only getting two volleys instead of the three that most battleships and battlecruisers get. The second difference comes from the fact that she's the only battleship in the game where her extra salvo comes from her skill and not granted from level break/development level break, which means that she's the only battleship in the game with multiple salvos right from level 1.
    • Her research requirements are also unique. Like Saint Louis, she requires Eagle Union tech points. However, she also requires a certain number of Iron Blood tech points. Her Combat Data Collection missions are also unique in that they can get XP from Main Fleet ships of multiple nations: Vichya, Iris Libre, and Iron Blood. This is to balance out the fact that, when she was added to the game, the entire combined "Iris" side had two main fleet ships besides her, both of which were event locked. Unfortunately for English server players, all but one of Iron Blood's main fleet ships were also event locked on their server for several months after her release until Divergent Chessboard was also archived on the English server, and Iris Libre's sole main fleet vessel (Richelieu) is also event-locked.
  • Mighty Glacier: Not quite to Friedrich's level in terms of pure stats (as she's one rarity lower), but she still heavily outweighs folks like Hood or Tirpitz in terms of HP... and thanks to her first skill, she might well be tankier than ol' Freddy in practical terms, as she gets a heal for 8% of her total HP when she dips below 50%, and can get this twice per battle. Not per map, mind, per battle. However, she does still have typical battleship evasion and is as much of an oil hog as any SR battleship.
  • Mysterious Waif: Even Richelieu has no idea who she is, let alone that they're supposed to be sisters.
  • Our Angels Are Different: You can say that again. She has a lot of angelic motifs, but they're combined with Robot Girl sensibilities - she has a mechanical halo behind her head at all times, she has a pair of... pauldron-like things that are very evocative of wings and which simply float at her shoulders with no apparent supports (and no other shipgirl has something like this), her appearance uses divine gold and white throughout, and she bears a spear-staff-thing that has a massive cross on the end.
  • Post-Final Boss: Of Skybound Oratorio, preventing Richelieu, Jeanne, and Illustrious from chasing Algerie while delivering a message to Richelieu from an "elegant spy" that Jean Bart has recovered from wounds sustained during her apparent sinking at the end of Iris of Light and Dark.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: Short, blue hair? Check. Robo Speak? Check. Unnatural eye color? Check. Emotionless Girl until she gains more of her own personality through The Power of Love? Check. Mysterious Waif with an unknown familial connection to another character? Check. And the clincher, angel motifs complete with a blue and white color scheme? Yep. Gascogne is about as unsubtle a RAE as they come.
  • Robot Girl: She has the appearance of one (well beyond other shipgirls) and also talks and behaves like one; her affection progression is more or less her learning to process emotions. Her oath line is significantly more emotive because she's finally learned what love is and can genuinely express her love for you.
    • Her swimsuit skin reveals the robotic hands she has in her normal skin are just gloves.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Of a Japanese sort. As part of her Robot Girl nature, she typically speaks using a lot of technical or formal military terms that are enormous blocks of kanji when written out, and utilizes only the bare minimum of hiragana necessary to maintain grammatical rigor, never utilizing less formal modes of speech or variants of diction that use more kana and less kanji.note  Only in her oath line does this begin to fade a bit, as she talks more like the delighted young woman she is at that moment.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Like a few other "unbuilt" shipgirls (especially among the Ironblood), she has golden eyes that are meant to seem otherworldly.

Gascogne (Muse)

Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gascogne_muse_al.png
ID: No. 418
Rarity: Super Rare
Artist: Liduke

"Gascogne module change process complete. New directive: sing for the world. Master's order is my will."

The version of Gascogne augmented by Muse Weapon technology. She's Polaris' lead vocalist and band leader (at least informally). Unlike her normal self, she's buildable (and is weaker than research version).
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Much like her normal version, she starts with two shots loaded and you can aim both of them. Additionally, her shells are always muse shells (the red muse shells are equivalent to HE and the blue to AP), so she can use the normal shell firing Triple 406mm (BL 16" Mk I) with no penalty.
  • Robot Girl: Generally she's still this like her normal version, although she's quite a bit more talkative. She does, however, manage to put in enough emotion for her singing voice. Her skill activation is also a lot more emotive than usual, and, like her normal version, she gets a lot more emotive in her oath line.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Support Party Member: Her "Leader of the Band" skill buffs all Muse ships' Firepower, Torpedo, and Aviation stats after she fires her gun for 10 seconds. It can stack twice.

Jean Bart

Voiced by: Marina Inoue

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jean_bart_al.png
ID: No. 353
Rarity: Super Rare
Artist: Ask

"I am the state-of-the-art, yet also last-of-my-kind battleship: Jean Bart. I'm guessing you, "your majesty," will be setting my course from now on… Hmpf. Show me what you're capable of."

  • Alpha Strike: As one of only three ships that can pre-load a cannon salvo, she excels on nodes that spawn large enemies right out the gate... and she also gets a massive steroid to the first volley of every salvo she fires, another massive steroid to manually aimed shots, and if she's equipping her historical cannons, she gains 30% crit chance and 50% additional crit damage. With the right gear, buffs and a little lucknote , she is fully capable of one-shotting even powerful enemies like Oceanas and Peace Breakers, saving you a lot of health and hassle.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The second half of "Iris of Light and Dark" revolves around her last stand at Casablanca, during "Operation Torch."
  • Anti-Villain: As the leader of the Vichya Dominion knight templars, she is technically allied with the Crimson Axis, though not by her own choice. Her faction are also the antagonists of the "Iris of Light and Dark" event, though the conflict is just as much about clashing ideals between her & her sister's "Iris Libre" as it is actual hatred towards the Royal Family.
  • Autobots, Rock Out!:
  • Aww Look They Really Do Love Each Other: With Richelieu. A lot of her hang ups can be traced back to her own feelings of being the morally inferior sister, yet when the two sides are reunited Jean Bart is the one holding Richelieu's cape tails when the latter is declared the new Pope.
  • Came Back Strong: Historically she was never completed during World War II and used mainly as a turret platform, but as a shipgirl, she's finally complete. However, in-story Jean Bart, suffered the same handicap that plagued her in real life when she faced Massachusetts.
  • Combat Pragmatist: She cares not for the knightly honor the other Iris girls tend to go on about. This is also reflected by her Main Gun Preload limit break bonus, allowing her to always shoot before any other battleship.
  • Critical Hit Class: Her "Final Shot" skill increases the critical hit rate and critical hit damage of the Quadruple 380mm (Mle 1935) if she has it equipped. Combined with her "Pirate's Soul" skill which increases damage of her first salvo as well as all manually-aimed salvos, scoring a critical hit on the first, manually aimed salvo can do a staggering 4.4 times the normal damage! This allows her, with some luck and with additional damage buffs, to inflict or nearly inflict an One-Hit Kill on even powerful Elite enemies, including tanky Siren bosses.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: She has a skill upping her manual aimed shot damage (on top of the normal boost); this combined with other buffs and using her preferred weapon, an exceptional amount of damage can be done.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At first, her working for you is rather teeth-clenched but as her affection goes up, she feels comfortable enough to fall asleep by you.
  • Dual Boss: With Dunkerque in the Extra Stage of the Iris of Light and Dark event.
  • Final Boss: Of the Iris of Light and Dark event.
  • Friend to All Living Things: The Slow Ahead! manga depicts her as this in that despite having a perpetual frown, animals love her. And even if she raises her voice at the destroyer girls, she cares a lot about them and doesn't want to see them sad.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Given she's named after the famous 17th century French privateernote .
  • Handicapped Badass: In-story Jean Bart's 2nd battery was not working and was also immobile due to her unfinished status.
  • The Heretic: She has always lived her life according to her own rules and beliefs which is the crux of her feud with Richelieu. In The Fool's Scales this independence gets her Excommunicated by Clemenceau (as part of her ploy to take down Marco Polo). Richelieu promptly revokes the Excommunication when she reunites the two factions, restoring her privileges and her honour.
  • Hidden Depths: Behind her braggadocious bravado and all the talk about the honor of the Templar knights lies someone crippled with by an Inferiority Superiority Complex towards her sister, Richelieu. The fact that she's, for all intents and purposes, a cripple doesn't help.
  • Historical Badass Upgrade: During the real Naval Battle of Casablanca, Jean Bart was barely able to fire 7 rounds, not salvos, before her only turret was jammed by a hit from Massachusetts.note  That said, it was still pretty brave of the crew of Jean Bart to engage in a naval battle against the US Navy while being basically nothing more than a half-finished and immobile turret platform.
  • Historical In-Joke: Despite being the same class as Richelieu, her rigging is different, with the main difference being her 2nd turret missing all the exterior housing and ornaments, this is a nod to her unfinished 2nd turret.
  • Honor Before Reason: Despite being a Combat Pragmatist that doesn't care for the honor Richelieu and her faction speak of, she still holds her own code of honor as one of the Knight templars of the Vichya Dominion.
  • I Die Free: Despite her country's hatred towards the Crimson Axis, she cannot forgive the long history of animosity with the Royal Navy & won't accept rolling over to ally with Azur Lane, especially since the "alliance" was effectively forced at gunpoint and anyone who refused was sunk. Her final order to the remaining Vichya ships is to sink themselves as she herself goes down.note
    • Not Quite Dead: Skybound Oratorio reveals she's alive; Le Terrible reports that she was rescued and is currently under Iron Blood custody undergoing repairs.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: In her secretary dialogue for her "Uninhibited Bloodstone" costume, she would rather be sitting in a quiet corner of the Ironblood party drinking alone. She even complains that the sheer pompousness of the party makes her drinks taste bad.
  • The Lad-ette: Refers to herself using the pronoun ore, and says outright in her "Uninhibited Bloodstone" costume that she would rather be out sortieing than standing around and looking pretty at a soiree.
  • Last of Her Kind: She was the last battleship commissioned during World War 2.note
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Alongside Dunkerque (and later Richelieu herself), Jean Bart is the only battleship or battlecruiser in the game with Main Gun Preload, meaning that unlike every other battleship, they start with their main guns loaded. As mentioned in a few other places, she excels at sniping big targets (bosses and Sirens in Siren fleets).
  • Of Corsets Sexy: To add to her pirate look.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She's often depicted with a frown. However...
  • Pirate Girl: Her fashion sense is decidedly pirate-inspired and her skill is even called Pirate's Soul. It befits her namesake, a famed Privateer. Naturally, in her summer skin, she wears a traditional pirate's tricorne.
  • Sibling Rivalry: In-story Jean Bart. Overlaps with The Rival with Richelieu, whom she considers a traitor. Ultimately, she actually feels she's the one that betrayed Richelieu.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Not that she wasn't good looking already, but putting on a flattering dress and some jewelry really brings out her stunning looks in her formal "Uninhibited Bloodstone" dress.
  • When She Smiles: She's usually a bit of a grump, but we get to see her smile at last in the EN 2nd Anniversary video.
  • Worthy Opponent: Massachusetts is one to her.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Cockroaches, according to the Slow Ahead! manga.
  • You Remind Me of X: Says this in her "Stranger" affinity quote. She is most likely referring to Richelieu.
Jean Bart: "Your smile makes me think of her... She's someone I wanna hate, but can't bring myself to."

"I am the third of the Richelieu class, the never-completed Clemenceau. Unlike Richelieu and Jean Bart, who made a name for themselves, I was abandoned during that great war. However, my lack of history or honors is also my greatest asset – that's right, nobody ever notices the shadow lurking behind the curtains. Heehee~"

  • The Chessmaster: During The Fool's Scales, she successfully manipulates Marco Polo and is able to undermine her scheme single-handedly.
  • Cleavage Window: Both her default and sports skins feature a very generous one. Especially prominent on her default skin, where her breasts are covered by little more than parts of her cape.
  • Consummate Liar: Proves to be this during The Fool's Scales, where she managed to fool both Jean Bart (into thinking she was genuinely being ordered to attack her own countrymen) and Marco Polo into believing that Clemenceau was genuinely willing to go along with her plans.
  • Fake Defector: She pretends to switch sides to Marco Polo in order to undermine her scheme from within.
  • False Friend: Subverted, despite undermining Marco Polo from within and ruining her plan she claims that their friendship was genuine. According to her, to stop Marco Polo from potentially becoming an unwitting mass murderer/world destroyer is for Marco Polo's own good, and there is an indication in the epilogue that Clemenceau hides the defeated Marco Polo while claiming she is dead.
  • Foil: To both of her non-prototype sisters.
    • Richelieu is the public face of the Iris Orthodoxy, while Clemenceau admits to not liking the spotlight, preferring to work behind the scenes. Richelieu is also an All-Loving Hero Both of them have a barrage skill that reduces the firepower of enemies hit by them, but Richelieu's overall skillset allows her to be a Support Party Member towards both Vichya Dominion and Iris Libre shipgirls at the cost of Richelieu having to be deployed as flagship to function optimally, while Clemenceau's overall skillset is entirely self-focused, requires you to sortie only Vichya Dominion vanguard shipgirls to get full effect, without having to deploy Clemenceau as flagship.
    • Jean Bart is brash, loud and headstrong and a Perpetual Frowner, while Clemenceau is patient and even-tempered, even in the midst of a crisis, as well as being a a Perpetual Smiler. Both of them are offensive powerhouses with skillsets that focus on buffing themselves, but Jean Bart does not require you to deploy her with Vichya Dominion vanguard shipgirls, while Clemenceau works best if you have a full vanguard of Vichya Dominion shipgirls.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Subverted; those are Clemenceau's colors, and while her methods may be shady, her intentions are not, as she is the one who demolished the potentially world-ending plot of Marco Polo.
  • The Spook: She takes pride in being the mysterious third sister of the Richelieu-class, as she herself admits that she enjoys working behind the scenes. Even Kronstadt and the Northern Parliament's robust Information Bureau have very few details on neither her nor the Tribunal that she is a part of.
  • The Spymaster: As a member of Iris's secretive Tribunal, Clemenceau has access to its expansive information network and thus is privy to all sorts of secrets from around the world.
  • Staff of Authority: She carries a large black staff with a gold design on it. She uses it to unleash Blanc, the Horseman of Conquest, to stop Marco Polo.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her facial features are quite similar to both of her sisters, making their relationship obvious.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Despite everything she has done and planned, Clemenceau does express some sympathy for Marco Polo at the end of The Fool's Scales.
  • Underboobs: The cut of her dress gives her this.
  • Vapor Wear: Not only is it clear she's unfamiliar with the concept of bras, if not for her cape it would be debatable if Clemenceau is even wearing a top.

"Your will be done, Commander. I am battleship Flandre, Your ship, Your subordinate, Your servant. Bestow upon me Your orders."

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Post-Oath, she's come to enjoy being pet on the head.
Headpat Line: "That feels so good..."
  • Blind Obedience: Defied. In her Love Affinity line, Flandre affirms that she's serving the Commander so faithfully because it genuinely makes her happy to do so, rather than simply out of blind loyalty.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Of the "beloved master" variant. A post-Oath Flandre, even after asserting herself and being encouraged to follow her own will properly, still continues to devote herself fully to the Commander because she's come to love him and serving him makes her happy.
  • Undying Loyalty: Her devotion to the Commander is the core of her personality, such that even at low Affinity she tells the Commander to not worry.
"It is the duty of Your ships to be commanded and to obey. This, I understand. Do not worry."
  • Verbal Tic: Her use of "You" and "Your" emphasizes her subservience to the Commander. Her post-Oath lines use "you" and "your" to reflect her accepting the Commander's wish for her to assert herself.
(Post-Oath Secretary line) "You wish for me to be the bird that flies freely, not one that is confined to a cage... Even if that bird wishes to remain at your side, you can allow that, right?"

"I am the aircraft carrier, Joffre. I was constructed to face off against Iron Blood carriers during the great war, but due to various misfortunes, I was fated to a life of continually being laid down and halted again, never getting to see the light of day. I have no doubt that was yet another of my many trials."

  • Berserk Button: Doing perverted things and using the Iris Orthodoxy's teachings to justify it.
  • Cool Sword: She wields a black rapier with gold trim.
  • Hates Everyone Equally: By her own admission.
Because I am one who judges sinners, in a sense, I hate everyone. All humans are born sinners, after all.
  • Hellish Pupils: Ironic given her angelic motifs, she has these sorts of eyes.
  • Horned Humanoid: She has mechanical horns, likely hair ornaments, in her pigtails. As was mentioned above, this is rather peculiar considering her overall motif.
  • Knight Templar: Even by the standards of other Iris and Vichya ships she is quick to judge.
  • Kuudere: She's cool, aloof, and speaks in a gentle monotone. On the contrary, her higher affection dialogue and her "Ensorcelled Snow White" costume reveal that she's actually rather playful and bit of a tease.
  • Nice Girl: Despite her judgmental tendencies, she's actually quite friendly and is quick to offer assistance.
  • One-Winged Angel: Becomes this in the "Angel of the Iris" event on hard difficulty. Upon defeating her or reducing her health bar enough, she gains her signature black wings and drastically alters her attack pattern.
  • Stance System: Her Sacraments of Illusion skill. If she is above your flagship on the combat screen, she will launch a special airstrike using fighter planes; if she is below your flagship, she will launch a special airstrike using torpedo bombers.
  • Winged Humanoid: She has black wings, which she describes as being sacraments of the Iris Orthodoxy. Howe was able to touch them during the "Angel of the Iris" event as an exchange gift for sharing cookies with Joffre.
Howe: Oh? My, oh my... They seem illusory but still have a nice, feathery feel...
