Iris Libre

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iris_libre.jpg

Ship prefix: FFNF

Representing Les Forces Navales Françaises Libres/Free French Navy, this faction is largely introduced through the 'Iris of Light and Dark' event. Ships of this faction are generally possessed of fancier rigging compared to other factions, have knightly and/or religious motifs, and often use the iris as a visual motif. They also usually use a white-and-blue color scheme. In stats, they're mildly akin to Royal Navy ships but a bit better balanced between main gun and torpedo. They are aligned with the Azur Lane alliance, having fled their home after the Ironblood conquered it.

A particularly interesting element is that they have a strong emphasis on being used together as a single fleet... and their bonuses include the Vichya, their nominal opponents. This reflects the fact that they used to all be in the same navy and ultimately they all want to be together again.

    open/close all folders

Faction-wide Tropes

  • Alpha Strike: Both of the French faction's Battleships come with their first salvo pre-loaded, allowing for them to get their munitions down range much sooner than their contemporaries. Combine Jean Bart's damage multipliers with Richelieu's and Champagne's innately high Firepower and you can wipe out enemy fleets before they have a chance to react.
  • Artistic License – History: The Iris are a bit moreso the trope than some of the other nations, since the setting takes more liberties with them compared to the other nations and their real-world counterparts. The government prior to the "Fall of Iris" was the Iris Orthodoxy, which appears to have been a Catholic-themed theocracy; the French government that opposed, and was defeated, by Nazi Germany in real life was the Third Republic, which was a decidedly secular democratic republic.note  The Iris as depicted in the game, though, appears to have been inspired more by the pre-19th-century ancien régime than the various governments that defined France in the 1800s and on into the 20th century.
  • Church Militant: Like the Orthodoxy that came before them, they appear to be a theocracy, with a heavy focus on the Scriptures, and their leader being called a Cardinal (even before Richelieu). The Orthodoxy's navy also contained a group called the Templar Knights, and the faction's loading screen mentions that Iris Libre was founded by several of them.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: The faction is referred to as "Iris the Liberty" in the First Anniversary Artbook. This also appeared briefly in the English version when Saint Louis was first added, though was later changed, and their emblem on the faction tech screen still features the name. (This was evidently after the English localization team begged the rest of Yostar, Majuu and Yongshi to use "Iris Libre" instead.) Crunchyroll's English subtitles for the anime also uses "Iris the Liberty". The Chinese server's use of "Iris the Liberty" makes it clear that only the English version uses "Iris Libre".
  • Kill It with Fire: The larger Iris ships tend to show an affinity for HE guns and burn damage.
  • La Résistance: Given they join the Azur Lane alliance and stand against the Ironblood and the Sirens.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: A shared property of nearly all Iris Libre and Vichya Dominion main fleet ships. Along with their Vichya sisters, no Iris battleship or battlecruiser followed the conventional battleship firing rules of one shot plus an additional salvo at first and third limit break until the introduction of Lyon in The Fool's Scales, which ran in August 2023. For Iris Libre, Richelieu has main gun preload and only one additional salvo and Champagne only ever gets one salvo but has incredibly fast reloads. Bearn was perhaps the most normal main fleet ship in either French faction, having a similar gimmick to Zeppy as a carrier with an optional effective light cruiser weapon slot and a guaranteed barrage every 24 seconds if that gun is equipped.
  • The Theocracy: Inherited from the Iris Orthodoxy that came before them and the Vichya, they are led by a Cardinal, have a number of ships with a religious bent, and refer to the Vichya as those who have betrayed the Scriptures.

Destroyers (DD)

    The L'Adroit-class

Forbin

Forbin (Retrofit)
ID: No. 348
Rarity: Rare
Artist: Yano Mitsuki

"I am Forbin, a trainee knight of the Free Iris. Compared to my sisters, I'm still lacking, so please give me your guidance."

  • Berserk Button: Downplayed, but touching her chest is a good way to rile her up to the point of considering using her sword.
  • Challenge Seeker: Expresses an interest in facing off against the Sakura Empire's sword users in a duel in one of her lines.
  • Foil: To her sister Le Mars over in the Vichy forces to the point where it's easier to list what they have in common (Knight motifs, similar headgear on remodel).
  • Nice Girl: Kind and quick to suggest healthy and helpful things and easily tolerates normal pokes, other pokes on the other hand...
  • Support Party Member: If the frontline is all French (Free and/or Vichy forces), she'll lower everyone's damage taken by a small amount.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She is the girly girl to Le Mars.

    The Le Hardi-class

Le Téméraire

Voiced by: Mai Goto

ID: No. 359
Rarity: Elite
Artist: Riichu

"I finally found you! Commander! I'll be in your care... My name? I'm part of Iris Libre, Le Téméraire of the Le Hardi-class!"

A (currently) limited time destroyer that became buildable with the Japanese anniversary update.

  • Expy: Is nearly a dead ringer for the Fate/stay night version of Joan d'Arc as done by her artist, Riichu, with the main differences having two semi-braided pigtails and having more a mage motif. She also seems to have gotten some of her personality quirks as well.
  • Improbable Hairstyle: Jesus. They're big enough to almost be a weapon system unto themselves. Untied, they'd probably go down past her feet. In both of her skins, in which she's sitting, they do indeed touch the floor.
  • Genki Girl: Very energetic about making friends and spending time with them.
  • Stance System: Has one due to her "Berserk Shooter" skill that if placed in the lead spot trades in a chunk of Anti-air and a bit of accuracy for Firepower, evasion and speed.
  • Support Party Member: Reduces damage sustained by the backline if she's active in the party while reducing her own damage from destroyers and light cruisers.

L'Opiniâtre

Voiced by: Mai Goto

ID: No. 395
Rarity: Elite
Artist: Riichu

"I'm the destroyer L'Opiniâtre, a so-called "magician" from Iris Libre. It's a pleasure meeting you. Um, actually, please forget the "magician" part."

  • Irony: She's on the side of Iris Libre, even though in real life, the French never finished her construction and it was the Germans who were supposed to complete her, but never did.
  • Magical Girl: She has an aesthetic a bit like this, crossed with a dash of Magicians Are Wizards. The irony, of course, is that she actually doesn't really believe in magic and certainly has no "magical" talent (unlike, say, a certain Royal Navy heavy cruiser we could speak of...)

    The Le Fantasque-class

Le Triomphant

Voiced by: Sora Amamiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/le_triomphant_al.png
ID: No. 347
Rarity: Super Rare
Artist: Yuugen

"Greetings Commander. Free Iris's 'super-destroyer' Le Triomphant, reporting for duty. A power that surpasses fantasies, Le Fantasque-class is in your hands."

  • Big Eater: According to Slow Ahead.
  • More Dakka: Her "Radiant Iris" skill boosts her reload by a considerable amount, stacking as she stays focused on a single target. By the end of it, she's spitting lead constantly, even with the slower DD cannons (like her own historical 138.6mm).
  • Stance System: Her "offensive" configuration trades a sizable about of Anti-air efficiency for firepower effectiveness when the lead ship. Leveling only increases the Main gun efficiency gained.
  • Super-Speed: She and Le Malin have the highest natural speeds in the game, and with the right gear and running solo (so other ships don't drag the overall speed down), can actually temporarily go past the boundary in the battlefield.

Le Terrible

ID: No. 522
Rarity: Super Rare
Artist: 小吃_chill

"I am Le Terrible, the elegant large destroyer who protects the teachings of Iris Libre. I have come in pursuit of your ideals. Commander, please show me the reason for which you fight."

  • Eyepatch of Power: A flower shaped one, shaped like the barrage she fires as part of her Terrific Terror skill.
  • Historical In-Joke: She references the collision she had with Le Malin by saying she has already apologized for it. It's also presumably why she is missing an eye since she ended up the more damaged one in the wake of the accident.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: A hat variant in her response to headpats.
  • Sleepyhead: Her "Sunlight, Seaspray, and Sanctity" skin. One of her lines even namedrops Not a Morning Person.
  • Super-Speed: Her skills add up to 14 to her speed stat (which is only rivaled by her sisters).

    The Vauquelin-class

Maillé Brézé

Voiced by: Minami Fujii

ID: No. 523
Rarity: Elite
Artist: Vilor

"Destroyer Maillé Brézé, Templar Knight of the Iris Libre, has arrived! Thou there, plebeian, thou may now sleep soundly knowing I'll defend thy lanes! ...What? Y-you're the Lord Commander?! F-f-forgive my grave disrespect just now!"

  • Hero Worship: Many of her quotes either contrasts the Commander to Richelieu or tries to impress her. This is in reference to their namesakes; Jean-Armand de Maillé Brézé was the nephew of Cardinal Richelieu.
  • Mythology Gag: She's the first and thus far only Vauquelin-class Destroyer as part of Iris Libre, as her sinking occurred two months prior to the fall of France.
  • Stock "Yuck!": Green peppers, stated in a line where she tries to get Vauquelin to eat her vegetables.

Light Cruisers (CL)

    The Jeanne d'Arc-class

Jeanne d'Arc

Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jeanne_darc_al.png
ID: No. 454
Rarity: Super Rare
Artist: MayaG

"If you are familiar with my name, then you should understand the burden that I carry. Jeanne d'Arc of the Iris Libre, shall be under your command."

Personification of the Training cruiser of the same name. She makes an unplayable appearance in the Iris of the Light and the Dark event and debuted as playable in Skybound Oratorio.

  • Barrier Warrior: An interesting take on it. While barrier skills are nothing new, rather than blocking a set number of shots, Jeanne's will absorb damage based on a percentage of her health, as well as granting a small buff based on whether the shield lasts its full duration or not.
  • Expy: Looking at her, one could easily be forgiven for thinking that Saber had somehow become a cruiser, while gaining the abilities of Ruler too. Said Ruler is also the spirit of Jeanne d'Arc and is one of the "Saberfaces" whose design takes cues from the original Saber, with this Jeanne d'Arc also having elements of Ruler in her appearance, especially outfit.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Blonde and very kind-hearted; where her disappointed line while it has a remark about cutting you down if you are the devil, it also has her pleading for you to return to the proper path if you're not.
  • Jeanne d'Archétype: She's named after the heroine of legend, and considers herself the inheritor of the original Jeanne's legacy and duties as a holy warrior.
  • The Lancer: From their interactions she appears to be Richelieu's closest friend.
  • Man on Fire: She'll spend at least the first 30 seconds of every battle engulfed in flames, taking 8 HP damage every 3 seconds, and a 10% chance for the burn timer to reset every time she's hit. In return, she gets a 20% buff to her firepower, torpedo, AA, and evasion stats while she's on fire. For extra Irony points, this is how her namesake perished in real life.

ID: No. 349

Artist: Ooyari Ashito

"Bonjour! I am Emile Bertin from the Free Iris, but you can just call me Emile. I hope we will all get along!"

  • Dance Battler: Is a dancer by nature so it's easy to imagine her doing so in battle.
  • The Fashionista: She seems to be the go to girl for fashionable clothing, such as Richelieu's flattering yet classy swimsuit.
  • Gender-Blender Name: She's named after Louis-Émile Bertin, a famous (male) French naval engineer.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Is Blonde and undoubtedly one of the kinder ships, even giving a gentle rebuke for an inappropriate touch.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Complementing her golden hair, her eyes are a light blue, reflecting her sweet, kindly nature, and her seemingly not realizing how much what she does lifts up those around her.
  • Support Party Member: The bulk of her skills support both French fraction DDs and by having her team up with them, she gets a bit of a boost to her damage against Destroyers and Light Cruisers and speed.
  • Tutu Fancy: Her dress is very pimped out and gets even more decoration after retrofit.

Heavy Cruisers (CA)

"I'm Suffren, the lead ship of my class. There are a few minor differences between me and my sisters, but that doesn't really matter since we're all Suffren-class at the end of the day! Always a pleasure to chat with you, Commander!"

  • Historical In-Joke: Her "Admiral Satan" nickname refers to her namesake, Pierre André de Suffren, who was called such by the Indian sailors he enlisted to replace his lost crew during his many battles with the British navy.
  • Horned Humanoid: She has a pair of horns on her head, probably a reference to her nickname.
  • Sleepyhead: She yawns in several different voiced lines.

    The Saint-Louis-class

Saint Louis

Voiced by: Asami Seto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saint_louis_al.png
ID: Plan 006
Rarity: Priority
Artist: kishiyo

"It is an honor to meet you, shepherd. I am Saint Louis, one who follows your will rather than God's. So long as you don't stray from the path of reason, I shall wield this spear for you."

The personification of the Saint-Louis-class heavy cruiser, designed as successor to the Algérie-class. Her design and construction ended with France's invasion and eventual surrender to Germany. As befitting her namesake, she appears with a spear and in armor.

  • Covert Pervert: Her "Holy Knight's Resplendence" party skin shows a very generous amount of cleavage and has a slit going up high enough that it's impossible to hide that she's not wearing panties underneath, raising some interesting questions about what's going on in her head despite her normally all-covering outfit and outward piety. Her "Alluring Administrator" qipao skin continues with the same conspicuous lack of panties, and while it shows less cleavage than the other skin, it's still fairly revealing in that department too.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Of the entire faction, as she predated the proper debut of Iris Libre by three months in the original Chinese debut. This gets especially funny since, while the other prototype ships required getting experience to unlock them via the corresponding nation's ships, Saint Louis, to this day, needs Eagle Union ships instead. (There weren't even enough Libre/Vichya cruisers in the game to form a full vanguard, period, until "Skybound Oratorio" a full two years later!)
  • Going Commando: As noted above, both her alternate skins have slits on the side that go right past her hips and make it clear she's not wearing panties.
  • Kill It with Fire: Her Reinforced HE Ammo skill boosts her damage with it but lowers ignite chance (static 3% reduction)
  • Lightning Bruiser: Due to her engine boost skill (which adds 3-8 speed based on its level) she's as fast as she is hard hitting. The same skill can give her a boost to evasion of up to 35% to at the start of the battle. That skill is on top of a respectable evade stat for a heavy cruiser. And the prototype 203cm gun associated with her (and is best suited for her) is the fastest firing heavy cruiser gun in the game. And then there's what happens when you sortie her with Richelieu and Tartu...
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: If her eyes' colors are not any indications of her being one of the best damage dealers in the game...
  • Religious Bruiser: Named after the French King and Saint of the same name, her lines have various references, calling you a shepherd (an acknowledgement of leadership due to Biblical references to them leading lost flocks). However her mindset is more on watching out for her allies than smiting enemies.
  • Shout-Out: Both her Reinforced HE Ammo and Engine Boost skills are references to World of Warshipsnote : "Inertia Fuse for HE Shells" captain skill note  and "Engine Boost" consumable note  respectively.
  • Super Prototype: She's the "not limited by naval treaty" successor to the Algerie-class heavy cruisers, which were well regarded by various world powers. Louis herself was going to keep the 203mm treaty-specification guns, but strap on a lot more armor and anti-air weaponry and sport big engines, all taking it way over the 10,000 ton limit (and making her bigger and more ferocious than the pre-dreadnoughts of 40 years prior).

Large Cruisers (CB)

    The Brest-class

Brest

Voiced By: Sayaka Senbongi

ID::
Rarity: Decisive
Artist: kurumi

"I am large cruiser Brest, born upon Iris Libre's hallowed ground. I love hearing all the tales spanning land and sea, and spreading my own tales through song and poem. I look forward to hearing the tales you are bound to weave, Champion".

  • Affectionate Nickname: Addresses the Commander as "Champion".
  • Barely-There Swimwear: Her swimsuit skin, which is even more revealing than her already Stripperiffic default costume.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Brest has blonde hair, and does not have a mean bone in her body—even her upset line is asking the Commander to "compose yourself and press onward".
  • Physical God: Looks the part anyway, considering the enormous godlike rigging and the six massive angel wings behind her.
  • Stripperiffic: Her default costume covers so little of her that it would not look out of place in a lingerie photoshoot, consisting of a string leotard with exposed Underboobs that covers very little of her groin area. Her swimsuit skin is even more revealing, with only a single stripe covering her groin and two stripes covering her breasts.
  • Unfortunate Names: While her name is taken from a French city on the Atlantic coastline, it sounds like something else when pronounced in English.

Battleships (BB)

    The Richelieu-class

Richelieu

Voiced by: Marina Inoue

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/richelieu_al.png
ID: No. 453
Rarity: Super Rare
Artist: Ask

"I am the leader of the Iris Libre fleet, Cardinal Richelieu. If you battle for faith and freedom, I shall bring victory to all of you, Commander."

The personification of the battleship of the same name, named after the famed Cardinal. She makes an unplayable appearance during the storyline of Iris of the Light and the Dark, proclaiming herself the leader of the Iris Libre (and also quite prominent in Jean Bart's memories). She stars in, and became playable in, the Skybound Oratorio event which commemorates Azur Lane's third overall anniversary.

  • All-Loving Hero: Her MVP line has her praying that the souls of those she has defeated may find rest in the afterlife, showing that she doesn't hold any ill will even for her enemies. In Skybound Oratorio, she even makes a point of trying to save Algérie from the influence of a corrupted Wisdom Cube, despite the latter being on the opposing side.
  • Animation Bump: Her "Fleuron of the Waves" swimsuit Live 2D skin is utterly bonkers compared to previous L2Ds and even other L2D skins that share her own event. She has incredibly elaborate recruit, login and return-to-port animations (which are also longer than any previous skin's at that point), her lip sync is perfect, and she has a huge variety of general animations across all her reactions and lines.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: At the end of The Fool's Scales she is made the pontiff of the reunited Iris Orthodoxy, but in a subversion she rejects and destroys the Crown of the Holy See after realizing it had been replaced by a Siren fake at some point.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite vehemently disagreeing with her sister Jean Bart's decision not to ally with Royal Navy, her secretary lines make it clear she still cares for her in spite of it all.
  • Badass Preacher: She's a Cardinal who's also a battleship.
  • Beneath the Mask: She puts on a strong stoic front for her role as leader, but in her swimsuit skin she shows a less serious side. All in all she doesn't seem to mind this, but appreciates breaks. Even in regards to her position and religious fervour, she's much less fanatical about it than we were initially lead to believe.
Richelieu's Affinity (Stranger) line: The one you are talking to was once despisingly called many things: the calamity that brought on war, the fearsome Cardinal, and the maniac possessed by religious fervor. I ask of you: when you look at me, what do you see in me?
  • Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: Averted; she is eager for the opportunity for herself and her countrymen to fight for your cause. Both sets of countrymen.
  • Covert Pervert: Particularly apparent in her swimsuit skin; she doesn't express any discomfort or anger with being ogled or touched like one would expect from a religious figurehead.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Has a particular affection for Meowficers, a reference to her namesake's well-known love of cats.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Tea. If she were allowed to bring red wine, she'd join the Royal Navy's parties more often.
  • Due to the Dead: Prays for the souls of the departed in her MVP line.
  • Erotic Eating: The return screen for her swimsuit skin has her walk her fingers over to an ice cream sundae, pick a banana out of it and slowly put it in her mouth.
  • Game Changer: With her high stats and powerful skills, she made the French fleet, formerly a niche pick, a viable option pretty much overnight.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: In spite of initially coming across as quite inflexible towards the Vichya Dominion, she was shown to be much more nuanced once she became playable; like a true religious figurehead she's an All-Loving Hero, and her abilities work on Vichya ships as much as one Iris Libre ones.
  • Historical In-Joke: When equipped with her historical Quadruple 380mm (Mle 1935) guns, she has a very small chance of activating a hidden "!?" skill, which removes a shell from each of her volleys for the rest of the battle, referencing an incident in which one of her guns blew up due to faulty ammunitionnote .
  • I Know You Know I Know: Richelieu's hiding things about the Basilica from the Royal Navy. The Royal Navy knows Richelieu's hiding something. Richelieu knows the Royal Navy knows she's hiding something.
  • Kill It with Fire: Her barrage sets enemies ablaze, doing burn damage/debuffing them. Algerie in particular can really take advantage of this. She also does up to 15% more damage with a High Explosive main gun.
  • The Leader: Of Iris Libre, and formerly of the entire Iris Orthodoxy.
  • Married to the Job: Downplayed; she makes herself clear in her Pledge line that she can't be solely devoted to the Commander since she still has her obligations to the Iris Libre. Even so, she swears to keep them safe.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Invoked; her Love Affinity line has her muse on the "distance between people", unsubtly referring to herself and the Commander while she tells them to allow other shipgirls to continue misunderstanding their relationship.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Her rescue of Royal Oak and Argus from an army of Pawns in Revelations Of Dust is this. Implacable and her team, and thus the player, only hear about it after it happens.
  • Religious Bruiser: She's the Cardinal of the Iris Libre, makes several references to religion, and refers to the Vichya as those who have betrayed the Scriptures. As secretary, she makes frequent references to praying for her comrades' well-being. She does bring attention to the reality that her position and her strong beliefs make her a divisive figure, her sister being the most noted casualty.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: She and Jean Bart are polar opposites in almost every way. Richelieu is heavily themed around religion, being named for a real life cardinal (as well as serving as one in the Orthodoxy) and having an ornate white dress & armor, while Jean Bart has a prominent pirate motif with a lot of blacks & reds. While Richelieu adheres strictly to Orthodoxy scripture and is willing to ally with Azur Lane, Jean Bart follows her own honor code even when it defies Orthodoxy teachings and refuses to be strong-armed by the Royal Navy into an 'alliance', especially given their violent history. Even their skill sets are opposite — Richelieu, being a flagship, focuses on team buffing and wide-area barrages that inflict burn status (in the French tricolors, no less) which several other Iris/Vichya ships can key abilities off of, not unlike Nagato, while Jean is a completely selfish, self-buffing damage dealer who focuses on absurdly massive burst spikes to single targets and provides no other utility.
  • Smash Sisters: The above buffs apply just as much to Jean Bart as any other French Ship, meaning her already ludicrous One-Hit Kill potential is now even greater. And while she doesn't have quite the same damage potential as her sister, Richelieu also shares her Main Gun Preload ability on top of a potent barrage, allowing the two to utterly annihilate whatever unfortunate ship spawns against them.
  • Support Party Member: Between buffing all her fellow Iris and Vichya shipgirls and debuffing enemies with the burning inflicted by her barrage, she's a big boon to her fleet.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: She's a little bit put out at having to take Illustrious & Fortune with her for the operation to secure the Basilica, primarily because there's a lot of sensitive intel that she'd rather be kept under wraps and in the circumstances she's likely going to have to share said intel.

    The Champagne-class

Artist: nineo

"I am the personification of Champagne, part of the Iris Libre. Commander, please give me an order—a reason to exist."

The personification of Champagne, part of the third batch of the World of Warships collaboration Research ships.

  • Artistic License – History: Much like Roon, the Champagne-class is completely made up by Wargaming. In World of Warships, she is essentially a copy of Gascogne's hull with the armaments of the never-finished Alsace-class battleships.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Downplayed. While she keeps her eyes closed most of the time, she opens them with some regularity. She does so more frequently in her New Year's skin.
  • Meaningful Name: While she's far more likely to have been named after the historic region of Champagne than the sparkling wine it is famous for producing, she nonetheless extolls the virtues of drinking wine.
Champagne: Immerse yourself in the liberating quintessence of wine, for the mind requires reprieve. Man is naught without repose.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Has a massive boost to the reload times of her salvoes (up to 40% at skill level 10), and has a guaranteed additional barrage when firing them. However, unlike every other Battleship in the game, she gains no additional main gun mounts even at maximum Development level — meaning she only fires one round of shells every time she reloads. The aforementioned buffs usually make up for this. Furthermore, the additional rounds of shells other battleships fire cannot be aimed, so against quickly-moving targets or bosses with lots of smaller ships surrounding them, they can prove to be of little benefit.
  • People Puppets: Somewhat. The two massive hands in her rigging have puppet strings connecting to the rest of its parts. Thus, while her body isn't being directly manipulated by the strings, their movements are still going to determine where and how she moves.
  • Power Fist: Her victory animation shows her equipping the massive hands in her rigging in this manner and punching with them. Sadly, this is merely Rule of Funny and she cannot use them in any way during combat.
  • Proverbial Wisdom: Is fond of speaking in metaphors and flowery, poetic language. Just get a load of her opinion of Valentine's Day:
Champagne: "People who seek happiness eagerly anticipate gifts. Those who desire warmth pin their hopes on confessions. Minds starved for affection become enraptured by dulcent smells. Existences tainted with excitement cannot refuse the sweetness of acceptance."
  • Rule of Symbolism: Has a cross on her forehead and a crown of thorns.
    • She wears the Tavernier Blue inverted in her Wedding Dress.
  • Stance System: She will receive different buffs to her stats based on the ammo type of her equipped main gun.
  • Taking the Bullet: If she is not the flagship, she will absorb some of the damage that your flagship takes.
  • Vapor Wear: There is no chance any bra has room to exist under her positively microscopic dress straps. The lady has less chest coverage than Albacore!

"Iris Libre's first carrier, Béarn, reporting to you. To be able to work with you is my honor, Commander, please do order me as you see fit."

  • Companion Cube: She is very attached to the book she always carries and scoffs at L'Opiniâtre's claim it's a magic tome. She admits it's just a diary that she writes her experiences down in.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Her bangs are Noticeably slanted to one side.
  • High-Class Glass: She wears a monocle on her left eye.
  • Historical Badass Upgrade: The historical Béarn's aircraft were never launched in combat, and she spent most of the war being shuttled around to various ports and bringing gold bullion to the United States and Canada to pay for armaments under the "Cash and Carry" policy. Her comparatively slow speed for a fleet carrier would limit her throughout her career.
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: While not evident in her standard outfit, her Summer Lifeguard skin reveals that Béarn has quite the set of hips on her despite her petite frame, being visibly much wider than her shoulders.
  • Minidress of Power: Her dress is so short it offers a very generous panty shot.
  • Older Than They Look: She's actually a contemporary of Hermes and Houshou, the first carriers of the Royal Navy and Sakura Empire.
  • Sexual Euphemism: It's not hard to read her Love line as such, when she declares that she'll do as the Commander requested and teach him the "Sacrament of Love".

"I am aircraft carrier Painlevé, and I stand here only because of wishes. Making our wishes come true isn't easy – it comes with sacrifices and regrets. But despite all that, we can never stop wishing."

  • Different as Night and Day: From Joffre. While Joffre is quick to judge, cynical and has an edge to her, Painlevé is sweet and hopeful.
  • Vapor Wear: It's very obvious from the cut of her skirt that she isn't wearing underwear.

Submarines (SS)

    The Surcouf-class

Surcouf

Rarity: Elite
Artist: Yunsang

"Salut~ I'm Surcouf! Why do I have submarine equipment despite the fact I have the physique of a cruiser? Hey now, that's all wrong! I may not look like one, but I'm a fully-fledged submarine! Anyway, I'll be counting on you from now on~"

  • Attention Whore: A downplayed example with her swimsuit skin, where she constantly asks the Commander to take photos of her, rub lotion on her, and she knowingly grabs her large thighs for the Commander's eyes to keep focused on her. She's still clearly interested in the Commander's activities however and even asks about his day in the menu screen.
  • Bland-Name Product: Her bikini skin depicts her with a "Brada" branded shopping bag full of products. The bikini itself has a dead ringer for the Chanel logo, differentiated only by a faint sharpening of the middle of the "C"s.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: She likes to sleep and slack off, but is a good fighter if her questline is anything to indicate, meaning that her team really feels it when she steps up.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Her questline makes this trope clear: She is The Slacker and rather odd at times.... yet at combat everyone else has nothing but good things to say about her performance.
  • Fanservice Pack: Double subverted. Her second shopping outfit covered up how much skin she showed and didn't leave any evidence of having a large bust, while her succeeding swimsuit skin gave her a very revealing bikini and even upped her cup size.
  • The Fashionista: Manages to display this even in her summer skin, which is rather lacking in fabric. She has a shopping bag near her with the word "Brada" on it, and the connector on the side of her bikini bottom looks an awful lot like the Chanel logo.
  • Hidden Buxom: Not the case with her default skin, but her shopping skin leaves no evidence of how buxom she is as per her swimsuit and default skin.
  • Historical In-Joke: Why is Surcouf a buxom Ms. Fanservice instead of cute Moe girl? (Which she herself acknowledges as weird). The actual Surcouf was the largest submarine built amid her time.
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: As far as her swimsuit skin is concerned anyway, where despite not being one of the chubbier ships, she still has major assets in terms of hips and thighs, which her skin overtly places on with its animation and default pose of her outright grabbing her thighs to grab the Commander's (and player's) attention. She is very aware of the fact that she has a mature physique compared to other submarines but is still one regardless, as per her introductory quote. This is a reference however to the actual submarine being one of the largest in the world at the time, if not the largest.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Much like other ships by Yunsang/Mr. Cloud, she... fills out her outfit very well, needless to say.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She is aware of her looks and is noted to be fond of showing off. Her reaction to the Commander grabbing her breasts is "if you wanna fondle 'em, just say so first~". Her swimsuit skin (with an obligatory NSFW warning) takes it to an entirely new level, telling the commander to take photos of her bikini, rub lotion on her, and she even invitingly tugs on her bikini when offering the Commander to touch her.
  • Sleepyhead: Her introductory quest line has the Commander constantly waking her up.
  • Square Race, Round Class:
    • True enough to her "underwater cruiser" title, her skills pertain mainly to surface combat (her barrage doesn't trigger until she surfaces) and enhancing the front line's accuracy. Contrast most other subs, who usually have torpedo skills and selfish aiming buff skills. Even her tendency to show off is rather atypical of a sub. She even has a heavy cruiser gun (one unique to her) as opposed to the destroyer-grade ones other subs use.
    • She's even odd in her faction as while she's named after a privateer (Robert Surcouf), she acts in no way the part and even professes to not care that much for piracy.
  • The Tease: She very obviously enjoys teasing the Commander with her attractiveness and alluding to doing interpretably-lewd things without being serious about them (like mentioning a "nap in the grass together" in her friendly line), although at higher affection and on oathing, she can't hide her genuine attraction for the Commander. Several of her swimsuit skin lines has her ask the Commander as well to take photos of her and rub lotion on her in a suggestive manner.
  • The Slacker: While not absolutely lazy, she's someone who is fond of taking it easy, which is best reflected in her bike skin acting very casual and dialing back on her teasing (but not completely).
  • Wingding Eyes: When groped in her swimsuit skin, Surcouf reacts very positively in the form of her eyes pulsating with hearts very strongly.
