Type VIIB

U-47

Artist: Otsuki Koyo

I'm the Type VIIB Submarine U-47. I'm bad with crowds. If you don't need me then I'll go back home.

  • Cold Sniper: She speaks little, appears rather distant and cold, and sinks your enemy from underwater with pretty startling efficiency.
  • Combos: Her main schtick besides being a loner. With her first skill, after scoring a hit on any enemy, subsequent torpedos hitting the same target in a limited time frame can do up to 40% extra damage, it helps that submarine torpedos are fired in consecutive fashion.
  • Cool Mask: Scarf with patterns that look like the jaws of a skeleton.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: U-47 sets up shop in her commander's office because of how quiet it is despite her being, by her own admission, no good for secretarial work. When she reaches "Crush" levels of affection she awkwardly turns down an open invitation to relax in the office whenever she wants as she's becoming anxious when she's alone with the commander. When she hits "Love" she confesses to now be always thinking how badly she wants to be back in the office when she's on missions before telling the commander that she doesn't think she can live without them anymore.
  • I Work Alone: Gets a hunting area bonus and extra damage to battleships if she's the only submarine in the fleet, though it's usually more useful to have a full subfleet.
  • Leotard of Power: Wears an unzipped swimsuit that gives her a Cleavage Window.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: It appears that U47's leotard is one size too small for her to keep the zippers closed.
  • Red Baron: "The Bull of Scapa Flow" which was the nickname of her Commander Günther Prien, and here is the name of one of her skills.
  • Skeleton Motif: The lines on her scarf and her leotard drive a skeleton motif, possibly in reference to her successful raiding history of sinking over 30 ships, including a battleship.
  • Vapor Wear: Her tank top is rather translucent and she's wearing no bra in her summer skin.

U-73

Artist: Yano Mitsuki

U-73 of the Iron Blood, reporting for duty! If there's anything that needs doing, just leave it to me!
  • Cool Big Sister: Fancies herself this but she's not quite qualified for it. On the Chinese server, she explicitly calls herself the commander's big sisternote , but this is omitted in English lines as this is a more implied trope by how she treats him.
  • Mad Scientist: Her "Science Rules!" skin has her playing with / throwing around scientific beakers and her Manjuu playing with fire, although the mini-story portrays that she has some ways to go until she can catch up with Akashi or Yuubari.

Hey! You! That commander over there! How 'bout coming for a ride on my Great Shark? I'll show you real thrillin' time!
  • Badass Biker: Her design invokes this, as her submarine has handlebars that she drives like a motorcycle complete with pedals. One of her skills reflects this as she zooms ahead of the normal position for a time.

Heheh, this means I have a Commander as well now! I'm U-81, my favorite thing is playing hide and seek, and well, if you can't find me, just yell "U-81, I admit defeat!" and I'll have no choice but to come out.

U-96

Sup. I'm U-96, Type VIIC U-boat and member of the famous Vorwärts wolfpack. Hehe, I'll have you drowning in reports of my success soon enough.

The personification of U-boat U-96 — who is, yes, literally That Boat. One of the most accomplished U-boats of the entire war, she is credited with dozens of freighter kills, partook in some of the most infamous wolfpack actions of the war, and was later the focus of one of the most famous submarine films of all time.

  • The Ace: Comes with being That Boat, and she's very aware of it.
  • Critical Hit Class: One of her skills boosts her torpedo critical hit rate.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: on the wall of her casual/gaming skin is a picture of Z46 in a dress; an early look at Z46's idol skin.
  • Gamer Chick: If her secondary skin is to be believed.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Sports them in her regular skin, but loses them in her secondary skin.
  • Hellish Pupils: Her pupils are thin vertical slits, she also has Supernatural Gold Eyes to boot.
  • Stripperiffic: Her gaming skin, which has her wearing a see-through camisole, a small set of panties and not much else.

U-556

I once swore an oath to Neptune Himself to protect Big Brother Bismarck wherever and whenever I was needed!... but there are some things I can't quite do alone... haha...

The personification of Kriegsmarine U-boat U-556, Bismarck's "sibling-in-the-ways" - while they're hardly the same ship class, they were under construction together in adjacent docks at Hamburg, 556 being hull-completed about the same time Bismarck got a final fitting out and got commissioned. When the time came for 556's commission, her captain couldn't find a band... and Bismarck's captain obliged with Bismarck's own band. In return, 556's captain "swore an oath before Neptune" to protect "Big Brother Bismarck" wherever Bismarck needed help.

It was mostly in jest at the time, though it would turn out to be much more serious than anyone realized...

  • Big Brother Worship: 556 thinks the world of Bismarck, and is really serious about her promise to do anything to help Bismarck.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • "Scherzo of Iron and Blood" is really just as much 556's story as it is Bismarck's.
    • Additionally, a few days before the actual launch of "Scherzo", she got a dedicated mini-event of her own that serves as a prologue and introduced an entirely new sub-based game mode, seemingly as an experiment, featuring naval mines for the first time as well as more in-depth diving and submarine-stealth mechanics.
  • The Promise: She swore an oath before Neptune to protect Bismarck. She kept it.
  • Stripperiffic: Substantially moreso than 81 or 557; she gives Albacore a run for her money in the Barely-There Swimwear competition. Her party dress, needless to say, is substantially more sensible.

U-557

Artist: Yumesaki Kaede

Type VIIC submarine, U-557, reporting in. My luck isn't so good. Please don't worry too much, just leave me alone... The mission... I'll do it properly.

  • Born Unlucky: She introduces herself by saying she's unlucky, and she's not joking — she has only 18 in her Luck Stat.note
  • Sleepyhead: Doesn't appear in her line, but in her chibi sprite this goes up to the point where she's sleepwalking during combat.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: Does this as one of her idle animations.

U-1206

Commander! Yeah, you! Get back here! You're supposed to greet me! Listen up, I'm the Iron Blood submarine U-1206, and I'll be serving here starting today! And don't forget next time!

  • Animal Motif: A spectral shark of all things.
  • Big Red Button: One of her voice lines has her finding one and deciding to press it, only to immediately panic. note
  • Historical In-Joke: This submarine had the dubious distinction of a malfunctioning toilet leading to circumstances that would result in her sinking, and as such, her search area is shaped like a toilet. Her impulsive personality is also an allusion to this.
  • What Does This Button Do?: Her personality; as she's quick to do stuff without thinking.

    The IXB-class

U-110

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/u_110shipyardicon.png

Voiced by: Manaka Iwami

Artist: Capriccio

Raaaawr. U-110 is a shaaaark. Fear meeee. Mess with me and I'll bite yooouuu.

  • A Day in the Limelight: The Enigma and the Shark, her introductory mini-event which was an AL retelling of Operation Primrose. She ultimately loses to her Royal Navy opposition, but the story has a happier ending than Real Life since she at least escapes alive.note
  • Alternate History: In the Azur Lane universe, U-110 successfully evaded capture by HMS Bulldog, but nonetheless still ended up surrendering the Enigma machine and other cipher decryption materials to her.
  • Animal Motifs: Her rigging is shaped like a shark, she's holding a pistol whose barrel is shaped like a shark, she has a shark-themed hoodie complete with teeth surrounding the opening, and she insists that she is a shark.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In The Enigma and the Shark, she leaves behind the backpack containing the Enigma machine to serve as a deterrent to Bulldog giving chase to U-556 and her. She doesn't quite realize the gravity of this mistake until U-556 asks about the machine's whereabouts.note
  • Genius Ditz: Despite having the mentality of a child, she manages to make a hobby out of decrypting ciphers.
  • Hollywood Encryption: U-110 manages to turn the very involved science of cryptography into a kid's plaything. Granted, we don't actually get to see what sort of data she is working with.
  • Idiot Hair: Her cowlick and bob cut combine to make her white hair look like a bulb of garlic. 110 expresses some annoyance that people don't instead see it as a shark fin.
  • In the Hood: Has a hooded cape with shark teeth circling the opening.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Constantly attempts to convince people she is a dangerous shark and that she should be feared. She usually comes across as just the opposite.
  • Odd Friendship: Some of her lines suggest she's struck one of these with former enemy Bulldog after joining Azur Lane.
  • Random Effect Spell: When called into combat, she will provide one out of a list of six possible buffs to every Ironblood ship you control, both beneath the surface and above.
  • Silly Animal Sound: Whenever she's pretending to be an intimidating shark, she'll belt out a "raaawr" ("gaoooo" in Japanese) which is closer what a big cat's roar would be. note
  • Threatening Shark: Inverted — U-110 is about the least threatening shark-themed character you'll find, despite her efforts.
  • Verbal Tic: Has a habit of drawing out voooooowels, particularly at the end of her seeeeeentences. Raaaawr.

I'm the hunter that prances across the open seas, U-37! ...Huh? Is the commander here always this spaced out? Well, I've given you my name already, so catch ya later~!

  • Historical In-Joke: She mentions she's not the submarine featured in the 49th Parallel film, despite also being called U-37.
  • Support Party Member: She buffs up every other Ironblood submarine present in the fleet.

Type IXC

Hmm... you're the commander 'round here, eh? I'm U-522, Iron Blood submarine, reporting for duty. Anyhoo, heard this here port's like a party. I'm eager to join in on it. Heheheh~

  • The Tease: She's always teasing the commander, telling him she has caught him ogling at her and that maybe they should get to know each other more intimately, although she said it as a joke as she'll drop the tease act if you do the special touch.
