Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Just gonna head things off now since I'm already getting PM's over it: please don't ask me about Deltarune because I haven't had a chance to play it. Also, once I DO play it, I'm not discussing it once the two week window on the demo passes because it's exactly that: a demo. A look at an incomplete game. No one's being discussed until the full game gets a proper release in the future, once that does happen I'll be more than happy to cover any potential candidates.

I thought it was the chapter in a game that would be released in segments, not exactly a demo?

Depotholing Luther.

  • Runaway: Dr. Charles Luther is a genius roboticist and hacker who creates spiderbot assassins, a gun with heat-seeking bullets, and a chip that can turn any regular robot into a weapon; all for sale on the black market to the highest bidder. Luther kills almost everyone he encounters over the course of the movie in increasingly brutal fashion. Additionally, he regularly beats his girlfriend, tries to kill her when she's taken by the police to keep her from talking, and ultimately puts a knife through her skull the second she is returned to him as part of a hostage exchange. His final encounter with Sgt. Jack Ramsay is designed to psychologically torture the cop as much as possible - he kidnaps his son Bobbie, sets up the exchange on top of a high rise to play to Ramsay's acrophobia and vertigo, then releases Bobbie - only to inform Ramsay that his robots are waiting to kill the first person who exits the building.

Shin Megami Tensei IV
#135633: Nov 8th 2018 at 6:03:36 PM

So, for the De-Pot hole. I did some slight changes to those Shin Megami Tensei entries, if Hamburger Time is here, please read them, you wrote them originally, right?

  • Shin Megami Tensei II: Archangels Michael, Raphael and Uriel—lacking any redeeming trait of later incarnations—are the Center Elders of the theocratic Tokyo Millenium. Dividing the city into five districts, claiming they did so in accordance to the division of labor, they favor the wealthy Central District while neglecting, abusing and even murdering the residents of the other four. Brainwashing the workers and prisioners of the Factory District using the song of a siren to use them as slaves and having created the seemingly idyllic Arcardia district, Arcadia is a virtual reality whose inhabitants are biologically unable to leave. When signs of rebellion appear in the Valhalla district, they order the Demon Abaddon to devour it, promising to restore his angelic status but when he is finished, they cast him back into the demon world. When the rebellion lead for the Templar Zayin gains support, they attempt to force him and Aleph to surrender by holding the Holytown District hostage, threatening to cut off their air supply and suffocate them to death. Convinced of their own holiness while making alliances with the demons that they claim to hate and worshipping a false God born of their own fanatism, they earned the dislike of all factions, including their fellow archangel Gabriel.
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey: The greedy Captain Jack proves that even in the demon world, sometimes the worst monster is humanity. A Private Military Contractor loyal to nothing but his own pocketbook (in his mind, it's the only thing with any permanence in the world), Jack is hired by an unnamed client corporation to pillage the demon world of its natural resources, a job he takes a twisted pride in. Though initially appearing as an uneasy ally to the protagonists, it is eventually revealed that he plans to manufacture a demon army for his client and himself, regularly performing painful amputations on any demon unfortunate enough to fall into his clutches and fusing them together into unstable forms that leave them in constant pain. When the protagonist’ ally Jimenez tries to stop the experiments, Jack sends him to be tortured and fused with his demon friend Bugaboo to use him as a slave. When finally confronted by the protagonist and Jimenez, Jack's only action is to scold them for costing him valuable men and equipment before engaging them in a final battle.

  • Shin Megami Tensei IV:
    • The original game: Mr. Tayama began as a small-time Yakuza leader in Tokyo, but in the power vacuum following an apocalyptic war he seized control of the city via commandeering the Yamato Perpetual Reactor, Tokyo's main source of power. He thus established himself as the unquestioned leader of the city. While Tayama protects the citizens from the hordes of demons ravaging the city, he does so mainly for the sense of power it gives him; anyone who questions his rule is killed or worse. Tayama invented a Fantastic Drug, Red Pills, that can be used to pacify demons, but unknown to the people of Tokyo, the drug is made from human brains extracted from innocent people that the Ashura-kai periodically kidnap and raise in a "human farm" until they die. Tayama is also breeding child slaves for this purpose. Though Tayama claims this is for the benefit of the greater population, he has also hypocritically cornered the market on smartphones, through which demons can also be tamed without causing harm to either them or humans, even demolishing an entire neighborhood to maintain his monopoly.
    • Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse: Defense Minister Tamagami, despite him not appearing for long, his actions are responsible in a large part for the dystopian setting of the game. A deranged Japanese Ultranationalist who believed only his country was worthy of superpower status, he called upon demonic power to realize his dream. He forcibly removed the souls of prisoners and replaced them with demon souls to create the National Defense Divinities, which he intended to use to conquer Japan's rivals such as China. He overwrote his personality onto the mind of an innocent woman to allow himself to cheat death, and he created the Yamato Reactor, a perpetual energy device fueled by demonic magic, through which demons entered the human world and ignited World War III. As his last gambit, if his new body were ever killed, he performed a ritual to summon the Japanese Goddess Izanami to exterminate his own people and remake Japan from scratch in his image.

  • Persona 3: Shuji Ikutsuki was the Chairman of the S.E.E.S., the heroes, as a seemingly kind, bumbling Pungeon Master. However, as the game approached the end, his true colors start to show. He is revealed to have partaken in Koutetsu Kirijo's experiment to revive Nyx, which caused an explosion that killed hundreds, including The Protagonist's parents and Yukari's father. This brought about the Dark Hour, which killed even more. He performed unethical experiments on children to produce artificial Personas, including the members of Strega. Persona 4: Arena Ultimax reveals that he even used Sho, his adopted son, for the experiment. When Sho's Split Personality, Minazuki, tried to kill Ikutsuki in self-defense, he put him in a coma and only bothered putting him on life support so that he might be of use to him again. When the events of Persona 3 begin, he manipulates the S.E.E.S. into killing the Twelve Shadows under the belief that it would extinguish the Dark Hour. However, in actuality, killing the Shadows was what he needed to revive Nyx. Nyx, being the Death Arcana, would wipe out humanity. When he was found out, he reprograms Aigis into helping him capture the S.E.E.S., which consist of teenagers and a ten-year-old boy. When Mitsuru's father tries to stop him, he shoots him dead before preparing to do the same to the S.E.E.S., and would have succeeded if Koromaru didn't stop him. A sociopath who would wipe out all life on Earth, Ikutsuki stands as one of the most vile human beings in the franchise.

While I de-potholed Ikutsuki' entry, I admit not knowing much about him (too much time after I did anything P3 related). Why he is a Omnicidal Maniac?

—-

SMT related but not de-pothole, I did add a small bit to the Belberith entry.

  • Devil Survivor: Despite his limited screentime, the Demon Lord Belberith is the cause of almost all disasters in the game. A demon who inherited the power and memories of the original King of Bel, Belberith swore revenge against God. To do this, he waged war against other demons who inherited the power of Bel and manipulated the Founder of the Shomonkai, making him believe that he was going to protect humanity from God's Ordeal. Under his orders, the Shomonkai causes the weakening of the Barrier between worlds leading to demons to escape to Tokyo, forcing the Japanese Army to lock the city to prevent a worldwide demonic spread, something which causes the death of hundreds of civilians. When he is summoned to the Human world by the Founder sacrificing his own life, Belberith confesses his real intentions, taking revenge on God by killing "all his children" and mocking the Founder for believing in him. In Yuzu's 8th day in Overclocked. Belberith shows his sadism by killing his newest servant after he asked when Belberith would revive his family and then gloating about how he truly did " reunite him with his family".

Keep the depotholes, but do we need any actual changes to the writeups otherwise? Like, I'm not on-board with the rewrite for, say, the archangel trio. I'm seeing, on that one, an unnecessary summary sentence and twice as many typos added to a writeup that didn't need to be rewritten.

Oh, and by the way, since I think a lot of us are crossing into November 9th... I'm going to take care of the Castlevania discussion here after talking with Polar (he'll be handling discussion on the MB thread).

The short of it? Nobody counts yet. The long of it? Dracula has very naked redeeming qualities and a massive Alas, Poor Villain death despite being more than heinous enough and most of the other villains similarly aren't bad enough, aren't developed enough, or simply have redeeming qualities.

Now, the two who would really warrant any discussion at this time... the first, Carmilla, is shaping up to be the Big Bad or one of the top contenders with Dracula out of the picture. She makes a very good first impression — she murdered her master, casually manipulates the other vampires in Dracula's court to eventually betray and kill Dracula, tricks Dracula's forces into attacking a lakeside town which ends with her killing virtually all of Dracula's forces by drowning them in holy water, and ends the season by enslaving Hector to have him build her an army with his powers to bring the dead to life, beating the ever-loving shit out of him to assert her dominance.

Now, with that said, Carmilla isn't quite bad enough yet, but her arc is far from over. So far? No redeeming qualities, whatsoever, and I'll be keeping a sharp eye on her for future seasons.

The other nasty vampire, Godbrand? Is a viking vampire with a clear history of wanton bloodshed (he dreams of the days he slaughtered everyone in sight) who's fully on-board with the betrayal plot, plots with the other vampires to slaughter most of humanity and cull the rest into breeding farms, and to blow off some steam, leads a few other vampires to absolutely massacre a town, down to the kids (particularly, Godbrand partakes in gleefully eating children alive).

Redeeming qualities? Zip. Arc over? Yes — Isaac kills him before his character can really amount to anything. Unfortunately, I think Godbrand just flunks the standard. He's awful, but the widespread massacres and carnage is absolutely nothing new to the series whatsoever, with all of Dracula's forces down to the random goons having been shown massacring countless innocents since the first season. Godbrand's unique in that he's got a clear personality and a role in the plot in contrast to irrelevant mook bosses like Blue Fangs or Slogra/Gaibon, but his actions don't stick out enough and he's otherwise killed off before he can make much of an impression.

So? I say we wait until the third season. Any contentions?

Also, I wanted to ask: on the Theme Parks section of the "Other" page, we have a subsection dedicated to Knotts Scary Farm and two other entries; both from Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights. Should we condense those two entries under a subsection as well?

Ex:

  • Halloween Horror Nights:
    • "Clowns 3D": The clown simply known as Sweet Licks was once a normal businessman and entrepreneur, who ran the company/attraction Sweet Licks Family Fun Center and Ice Cream Emporium with his two adult children. However, after the vilification of clowns through horror media, dressing up as clowns to entertain people became a difficult business practice, as no one wanted to shop or even visit their attraction anymore. To make matters worse, the country developed a demand for low-calorie food, resulting in very little people being interested in Sweet Licks's treats. The company fell on hard times, and Sweet Licks became so obsessed with working that he stayed inside the cold factory for years until parts of him became permanently frozen. Filled with rage, Sweet Licks snapped and began killing humans, then turning them into "all natural, high protein ice cream". He then used his attraction to lure in and trap visitors, who he proceeds to kill by hanging from meat hooks or fill with ice cream until they burst, collecting their organs and vomit to use as ingredients. He uses pickaxes and chainsaws to both attack guests and mutilate still-alive victims and other clowns. As guests try to flee, he attacks them again and defeats them.
    • "Maximum Carnage": In this 2002 maze attraction based on the comic, the story is altered the story so that Carnage won, killed most of the world's heroes, and took over the planet. Throughout the maze, the guests see bodies of the heroes Carnage killed, including Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Captain America. Eventually, Carnage sends his henchmen after the guests.

I personally feel that Godbrand just makes it, but I can live with him not counting. But I do agree that Carmilla is definitely worth keeping tabs on.

And yes to King Cold. I'm honestly pretty glad that this fanfic actually let him do more than just exist for the sake of showing how badass Trunks is, and have him live up to his potential. I swear, the guy's one of Dragon Ball's biggest examples of They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character alongside Raditz, Goku's goddamn brother that they did absolutely nothing with.

If Raditz was just a random Saiyan nobody would care. I think Toriyama was in Early-Installment Weirdness, being "look how evil the Saiyans are when they don't even give a shit about their own kin!" and "Darth Vader's reveal was pretty dope", he just got distracted with the later Saiyan Saga/Frieza Saga before he could seriously do stuff with it

Found this under "Spider-Man Noir":

  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Octavius thinks lobotimizing people and keeping them locked up is humane, but killing them without respect is animalistic. He also doesn't see any point in being gratuitously cruel towards his slaves, even the mindless ones, noting, "Any working animal requires basic conditioning, but I shall always recommend the most humane treatment. A healthy, well-cared-for creature always gives the best return. We are not monsters, Doctor Connors."

From what I remember, there are no real standards on Otto's part. The guy is a horrific racist trying to act all self righteous about cruelly experimenting on and enslaving innocent black people. Similarly, I'm pretty sure him not wanting to kill them was because he valued them as the fruits of his research and viewed Crime Master wanting to kill them as a waste of his hard work.

Again, I haven't read the Noir comics in a while but I genuinely don't remember anything even remotely resembling a truly redeeming quality from Noir!Ock.
