Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Before I get to Strucker and Nadir (eventually tongue ), here's the re-ordered, de-potholed, condensed group:

Novels for adults, copublished by Berkley Boulevard, in rough chronological order Continuity Note

  • Untold Tales of Spider-Man anthology: In the short story "Deadly Force", by Richard Lee Byers, Spider-Man has to deal with a sadistic Serial Killer named the Rooftop Ripper, a few weeks after the death of Gwen Stacy. Spidey is enraged at the Ripper due to his M.O of kidnapping young blonde women, torturing them to death and then throwing their bodies off of a rooftop. Spidey confronts the Ripper, who brags about killing a woman earlier in the night and describes how he gruesomely murders his victims. The Ripper then states he will kill another woman if Spidey fails to stop him. The Ripper uses his super strength and fighting skills to defeat the exhausted and emotionally distraught Spidey who awakens to find the mutilated body of a blonde woman draped over him. Later, Spidey meets a cop at the scene of another of the Ripper's gruesome murders, with the cop saying this is the third victim this week. Spider-Man believes the Ripper is such a vile foe, he considers breaking his oath against killing. However, Spidey ultimately decides against that and is better prepared for the Ripper when he kidnaps another woman, threatening to rip apart the woman and throw the body parts at Spidey, who saves the woman and has the Ripper on the ropes, causing the latter to flee and try to throw the woman off the roof to get Spider-Man off his tail.
  • The Incredible Hulk: What Savage Beast, by Peter David: The Maestro is a corrupt future version of the Hulk and the dictator of a post-apocalyptic world. Hailing from an alternate timeline where the Hulk did not end his reign, this Maestro is just as cruel as the original Maestro was, killing anyone who opposes him and taking any woman who catches his fancy as a Sex Slave. Maestro kidnaps Skooter, a freedom fighter who works for an elderly Rick Jones. Maestro subjects Skooter to a device that forcibly scans Skooter's mind, allowing Maestro to learn the location of Rick's encampment, where he kills every man, woman and even child. Maestro then breaks Skooter's legs and performs taxidermy on Rick for defying him, and takes from Rick a gem called the Timeond, which used to belong to Doctor Strange and allows one to visit other times and dimensions. Maestro uses the Timeond to visit a different dimension, where an intelligent Hulk lives with Betty Ross in secret. Maestro turns back into his Bruce Banner form, murders an elderly scientist named Amos Trotter and takes his place. Maestro, as Trotter, offers to cure the Hulk, in order to get close to Betty, who is about to give birth. Betty gives birth to a child named Brett and Maestro reveals his true colors, kidnapping Brett and returning to his own dimension, where he raises Brett to be as cruel as he is. When the Hulk comes to the Maestro's dimension and gets help from another rebel encampment, Maestro orders everyone in the rebel camp to be slaughtered. Maestro has been using the Timeond to recruit Hulks from various timelines to become his army and plans to go to the Hulk's dimension to ravage it, killing millions in the process. When Brett opposes this genocidal scheme, Maestro tries to kill him.
  • Fantastic Four: To Free Atlantis, by Nancy A. Collins: Warlord Kreeg is introduced having captured a human, and would have executed said human if not stopped; he has apparently taken humans from boats before, and is notable for his hatred of humanity. His main role is taking part in a conspiracy along with Namor's cousin Byrrah to overthrow Namor and place Byrrah in charge. Kreeg manipulates Byrrah into signing several death warrants, and enjoys watching as an execution is taking place. He later has opponents killed and their heads placed on pikes. He plans to "purify" the undersea kingdoms of non-Atlanteans, and declares were on the surface world by, among other acts, having his forces attempt to blow up all the ships (at the least) of 5 major world harbors, including New York Harbor. He also decapitates a subordinate who fails him. While appearing to have good intentions, the fact that he is willing to work with a "surface-dweller" such as Doctor Doom shows that he is nothing more than, as Namor himself says, "a fierce and bloody-minded savage".
  • Iron Man: Operation A.I.M., by Greg Cox: After the supposed death of the original M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing), Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) creates a new version of this monstrosity to help fight against their creations the adaptoids (androids who can copy anyone) who have turned against them. After one of A.I.M's scientists volunteers to undergo this experiment, he is dubbed Modok 1.5 and quickly turns against A.I.M., throwing in his lot with the adaptoids and becoming their master. Modok goes to an A.I.M undersea base looking for the aforementioned experimental energy chip, destroyed around 2 weeks prior, slaughtering the hundreds of A.I.M. scientists who were present. Iron Man and his allies, Captain America, Black Panther and War Machine, go around the world to stop Modok from acquiring the ingredients to make a new energy chip. One of Modok's adaptoid minions, disguised as the Mandarin, attacks an A.I.M space station, brutally massacring everyone on board, and tries to cause the space station to crash into Miami to cover his escape. Modok takes over Stark Enterprises and uses its resources to complete the chip. Then he tells Iron Man his terrifying plan: he will use the chip's power to increase his mental powers and wipe out all of humanity and replace them with adaptoids. He then plans to wipe out all life on Earth—including the adaptoids—before going to space and slaughtering any alien civilization he finds. Declaring himself an "Angel of Death" who has transcended humanity, this new Modok is even more vicious then the original.
  • Spider-Man: Carnage in New York & Goblin's Revenge: Cletus Kasady, the Serial Killer who was psychotic even before he became the chaos-loving creature known as Carnage, ends up in possession of a Psycho Serum which causes anyone subjected to it to go mad with bloodlust. Carnage, after torturing the serum's creator, Dr. Eric Catrall, goes to a party where he violently murders some 20 or so people, and forces Spider-Man to save more. He then cuts a swath through people at a public event to feed the homeless, and attempts to drop the serum in the food for the homeless, which would cause massive casualties. He is stopped, but while escaping attempts to kill a dozen or so people before Spidey saves them. He is captured, but is broken out by a mercenary team and shows his appreciation by playing "the old skin game" with the leader—we are later told he killed 30 or so of the mercenary team—and on his way out cuts one guard's nose off and cuts off the hands of another. He later brutally kills several more people, and threatens to kill hostages if Spidey doesn't show up. Finally, when Carnage's rescuer attempts to launch a pumpkin bomb containing a few drops of Catrall's serum at Spidey, Carnage redirects it into a crowd; the only ones affected are a team of 51 mercenaries hired by Catrall's ex-employee to retrieve the serum. As Carnage watches in delight, the men brutally tear each other apart, while the final 5 are shot by the police.
  • X-Men: Smoke and Mirrors, by eluki bes shahar: Mr. Sinister is once again presented as a heartless Mad Scientist obsessed with eugenics. Mr. Sinister takes the guise of a scientist named Arnold Bocklin and claims to have devised a way to "cure" mutants and take away their powers. However, Sinister covers up the fact that this treatment results in death for the subject half of the time. Sinister has the mistress of a prominent US Senator killed by a mutant, so that the Senator will support a bill that will make this treatment mandatory for all mutants. Sinister also has a team of mercenaries called Black Team 51 kidnap some mutant teenagers from Ohio so that he can experiment on them. Sinister has also been helping the Canadian government revive the Weapon X program and helps them transform an innocent Inuit woman into a killing machine. Sinister later explains his plans to use this cure to commit genocide against the world's mutant population and when that is done, he plans to destroy humanity with a race of new superhumans he will created from the DNA of the mutants he has subjected to his "cure". When the X-Men foil his schemes, Sinister sets his lab to explode before escaping and orders his men to fight the X-Men, not caring if they die in the process.

Klamp sounds like a yeah, now guess who's back with more 80s edge:

What's the work?

Goku: Midnight Eye is an OVA based on the Cyberpunk manga of the same name. Concerning the titular hero and private detective, who, through an accident of fate gets an electronic eye allowing him to access any computer database in the world and a stick...thing that acts as a pretty badass weapon. The plot has Goku going on various jobs for clients and the manga's starting one/subject of the first OVA brings an impressively nasty baddie.

Who is Hakuryu? What has he done?

Allegedly a legit and wealthy businessman, Genji Hakuryu uses his wealth and good image as a cover for his real way to make money, selling weapons to war criminals all over the world. The police try to gain evidence on him but everytime they send a detective to trail him, their men mysteriously commit suicide. Having taken out four shortly into the work, two more are soon killed as they spy on Hakuryu's hotel room, a mysterious woman mind controlling one to kill the other and then himself. When confronted by Goku, Hakuryu seemingly lets him go, saying he doesn't like killing bu won't stop Goku from committing suicide...only to send his psychic lackey after Goku and trying to drive him to suicide, though Goku breaks her spell by gouging out his own eye, interesting a mysterious being who gifts him with the pole weapon and electronic eye to replace the one Goku just lost.

Hypnotizing Goku's partner, Yoko, Hakuryu tries to have Goku killed by her and one of his mooks. Although Goku manages to escape and kill the psychic woman, Yoko later dies of injuries sustained by Hakuryu's poisonous insects. Now, the real kicker. We witness Hakuryu in a meeting with a General commanding a war against another country. Hakuryu sells him a virus to be transmitted through breeding swans, with the potential to kill hundreds of thousands. Afterwards, Hakuryu meets with his next client, the General of the opposing nation and sells him another massively destructive weapon for 120 million yen. Trying to kill Goku off with his guards and a water trap to drown him, Goku hacks Hakuryu's building computers and redirects the water flow to the room Hakuryu is holding his meeting, washing everyone except Hakuryu out the window to their death. Using the decapitated head of some weird robot fetish droid he fought, Goku blasts the greedy arms dealer through the head, putting an end to his schemes.

Heinousness?

The second OVA has a human trafficker but his crimes are very undeveloped and offscreen and the main villain of that one is a total prick but he has even more resources than Hakuryu and although he molests his adoptive daughter and turns his son into a prototype psychic Serial Killer, is only responsible for a few deaths and has a vague goal of getting psychic powers himself, with no emphasis on what he intends to do with them. This has nothing on the massive amount of death Hakuryu will cause with his arms trade.

Mitigating factors?

His dislike of killing is obvious bullshit, as he sends his psychic subordinate after Goku right after he says this. At best he just doesn't like getting his own hands dirty and it's more than likely just a tasteless joke. It's explicit he has no problem ending life

Verdict

Up to you!

To answer a question a few pages back, the dub version of Gonzo Tarukane was added. It's actually funny, because for a while, I was thinking about suggesting the 4Kids dub version of Arlong, but it's been years since I watched that dub and suffering through the 4Kids dub once was enough.

[tup]Hakuryu

I won’t have many recommendations after this, too much shame.

What is the work?

Puppet is a sequel to Finally Free. No worries, I think this candidate is more deserving than Dark Meta Knight.

What is it?

A lone Dark Matter

What does it do?

Seeking out a Galactica Knight from an alternate reality, the Dark Matter convinces him to help it destroy a monster that has been attack the people of Popstar. Though it’s motivation is called into question when it puts an electric shock collar onto Galactica Knight, threatens to kill him with it if he doesn’t agree to help, and stresses him out to the point he began killing any citizens of Popstar they come across while on their journey to find the monster. Despite having the shock cuff, he doesn’t do anything to stop him from killing the inhabitants.

When they both finally confront the creature, Dark Matter reveals that this was all a Batman Gambit so he could take control of Galactica Knight’s body.

Shoving him into his own mind, Dark Matter mocks Galactica Knight with visions of his past. When he confronts the creature in the center of his own mind, Dark Matter gleefully reveals to Galactica Knight that he killed his family and burned down his village to manipulate years ago. This is Galactica Knight’s Freudian Excuse, his family was killed, but he didn’t know by who, so he just went around destroying planets until he found the one that did it. After giving Galactica this revelation, he mocks him by making him hear the screams of his family and giving him visions of his village burning.

After that, Galactica Knight escapes his mind, it is revealed Dark Matter used his body to killed its monster and set fire that undoubtedly killed many dreamland inhabitants.

This results in Meta Knight killing Galactica Knight when he believed he did it.

He completely gets away with it.

Freudian Excuse or Mitigating Factors?

He used to have identity problems due to his incomprehensible nature confusing even itself, but it has gotten over them. He claimed to have cared for Galactica Knight at one point, but he killed his family and destroyed his home, eradicating the likelihood of this being true. Even if it was, its actions in present show any love it had was gone.

Heinous Standard?

Sets the bar much higher than Dark Meta Knight did. It was willing to cause the deaths of hundreds all for a lazy attack on the Fountain of Dreams.

Conclusion?

Don’t know, I’ll let you guys figure it out.

Going to say no right off the bat because it's a fic based on Kirby and the word "fuck" pops up in it more than once. This does not mesh with the original setting at all.

The fact a search of the word "blood" brings up references to trails of dead bodies being left behind doesn't sell me either.

Hell, every sentence in this story just seems to be about the Dark Matter manipulating the Knight into doing evil things until the Knight is killed and the Dark Matter just escapes, I'm not even sure it's got a proper plot. Look, Koala, none of us want you to leave or feel shame, please just branch out a bit, as has been said below, when looking for works.

[tdown] Dark Matter. The prequel story was at least somewhat close to the tone of the canon series. This one is just way too dark to ever fit in with the real Kirby series.

[tdown] Dark Matter. Word of advice, Koala? Be careful with proposals from Kirby fics. There are much more conducive settings for a CM. I'd recommend searching for fics of works that already have monsters listed.

Hey ACW, if you are putting the Marvel novel villains in order of appearance, Rooftop Ripper should appear last, Untold Tales of Spider-Man came out after Smoke and Mirrors.

Yes to Genji Hakuryu and No to Dark Matter.

Here's what I say with Fan Fiction, you will get far less legitimate monsters from a super G rated franchise like MLP or Kirby, then something aimed at an older audience. The RWBY for example is a better choice, because its not aimed solely at young children.I think you can better results with fan fiction based on shounen anime (Bleach, DBZ, etc), Western comic books (Spider-Man, Batman, etc), sci fi franchises (Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr. Who), fantasy (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc) or even horror (Halloween, Nightmare on Elm street, etc). Those are the franchises that would have Complete Monsters that would make sense for their worlds.

A fan fic that turns Klaw from Black Panther into a monster makes more sense then a fic that tries to turn a minor MLP villain into a serial killer.
