Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I gotcha. One more from Interceptor, but I'll deal with that later.

  • Shield Hero: Malty S. Melromarc is the sociopathic daughter of Queen Mirelia. Happily playing at adventuring, she routinely betrays those with her, accusing Shield Hero Naofumi of rape to ruin him and possibly see him executed while also selling female companions to slavery or brothels. Later assisting with a potential coup to assassinate her little sister Melty, Malty inspires several coups and armed uprisings while repeatedly double crossing all in her path, causing untold bloodshed and even seeing her mother killed so she can take the throne herself.
  • Interceptor: Alexander Kessell is a former expert torturer working for terrorist groups to overthrow the US. Taking over the Pacific Interceptor platform, Kessell massacres everyone there, shooting the head officer in front of heroine J.J. Collins and attempts to launch missiles to wipe out LA. Foiled by Collins, Kessell tries to get back in, trying to break her psychologically by having her father tortured and seemingly murdered. It is revealed Kessell is nothing more than a mercenary hired by terrorist who plans to nuke 16 major cities and kill 300 million people just to get paid.
  • Dracula: Dracula's brides are a trio of seductive women and brutal murderers. Lacking any of Dracula's own redeeming qualities, the trio have fed on blood through the ages, sexually assaulting Jonathan Harker and attempting to drain him before being satisfied by murdering and feeding on a baby Dracula brings for them. The Brides proceed to torture and drain Jonathan to keep him week over and over, later surfacing again to tempt Mina Harker into killing Van Helsing and violently tearing apart van Helsing's horses for sheer spite.
  • In Transit: Colonel Pavlov is a callous Soviet warden who oversees the German prisoners with abject brutality. Having men hanged on suspicion of being in the US and humiliating women by forcing them to strip in the freezing cold, Pavlov has the prisoners beaten, starved and tortured, with any hint of disloyalty brutally punished as well, with a deal with the doctor Natalia to ferret out any missing SS officers. Even after she adheres to the deal, Pavlov sends her lover off to an institution in Siberia, calmly remarking the deal is over.

Shit Tell, I'm very sorry about that.

So here's my next Dead to Rights: Retribution EP. Lighty will be handling the game's final candidate.

Who is He?

Riggs, the main villain of the first six chapters of the game, is a childishly psychopathic middleman working with Temple to cause chaos amongst Grant City, while also working alongside Redwater in his plan to turn the city into a Police State under Temple’s orders.

What has he done?

Manipulating and militarizing the Union gang into helping him hold Temple Tower hostage under the guise of giving back to the poor, Riggs kills plenty of hostages and cops by dropping them off the tower with sadistic relish, while following orders from Temple to make him out to be the hero. Riggs also partners with the Triads in order to cause mass destruction across the city, primarily by supplying them with explosives in an attempt to bomb Grant Central Station and kill everybody inside.

Also working as one of Redwater’s G.A.C. troops, mainly to help spread fear amongst the populace, Riggs secretly plans to kill Redwater to assist Temple’s plan, and is later shown on duty sadistically executing two Union members after finding no use for them anymore now that G.A.C.'s been approved. After Slate reveals to Redwater that Riggs intends to betray him (via a tape recording that Riggs stupidly left behind unprotected), Redwater murders Riggs before that can happen.

Redeeming Qualities?

Zero. All of Riggs’s claims of helping others, especially when he’s working with the Union, are just an act meant to hide his sinister collaboration with Temple. And Riggs only follows Temple's orders to get paid.

Heinousness?

While Riggs is revealed to be nothing but a psycho taking orders from Temple, he happily carries those orders out with glee, willing to cause mass hysteria and destruction amongst Grant City for a simple payday, while indulging in all types of murder and mayhem to make sure Temple’s plan succeeds.

Conclusion

Keep

[tup]Riggs.

Here.

  • I'm the Grim Reaper: Season 3: Dr. Judah is a monstrous immortal elite who helps keep hospital and medical care prices high to prey on the poor. Before the series, Judah helped convince Ante Nora/Scarlet to release the virus Scarlet Rot into the world, leading to 10 percent of the world's population having their organs liquefy and die as a result. Judah also broke and abused Ante and later spitefully destroys the cure for Scarlet Rot in order to create a market for his more long term treatments to be more profitable. In the present, Judah captures Scarlet's friend and tortures him repeatedly for sheer scientific fun. As a final act of spite, Judah burns down the apartment of Scarlet's deceased mother with all their memories, boasting how he now completely owns Scarlet.

Yes to riggs. My next Interceptor: Beaver Baker.

Who is Beaver Baker?

The traitor in the Interceptor platform. Beaver assists Kessell getting in to slaughter everyone. Even before this, he's a racist, sexist bore who upon helping Kessell take over the command center, tries to rape Collins, stating it's what every soldier wants to do to a female commanding officer. Stopped only for reasons of pragmatism, Beaver is later locked out and attempts to help Kessell kick the missile launch off. When Shah helps to rig up the Platform to stay operational while sinking, Beaver intercepts him and when Shah tries to appeal to his better judgment, Beaver shoots him in the head.

Things head off to Beaver vs. Collins on the platform, Collins wrapping razor wire around his neck to choke him. When he sneers it won't kill her, she responds gravity will and takes them off the platform, which would normally hang him. Except in this case, the wirejerks and takes Beaver's entire head off.

Mitigating issues?

Beaver is a racist, sexist creep who's every MAGA stereotype distilled into one person. He has a rant over what a Patriot he is, except it's all about how much he hates diversity, women, LGBT people etc. His "I'm a patriot!" before he executes Shah leans a bit hollow...moreso how he's doing it because Kessell's offered him a ton of money.

Except, uh, the US Dollar might be a bit weak after the annihilation of the New York Stock Exchange, but...there we go.

Conclusion?

Yeah, Beaver's an easy one, too.

  • Beaver Baker is a treacherous soldier double crossing his country, a racist and misogynist bigot who despises the diversity of America and wishes to see 300 million killed to carry out his delusions of being a patriot. Beaver assists Kessel in murdering the troops aboard the Interceptor platform and makes clear his intent to rape Collins, later murdering Corporal Shah after Shah's attempts to appeal to Beaver's better nature fall flat.

  • A Rabbit Among Wolves (top of the tree): Cinder Fall, lacking any of Coeur's usual sympathetic treatment, is instead a spiteful and petty lieutenant of Salem. Following the death of Adam Taurus, Cinder is forced to seek a new group for her "army", doing so by going around the Vale underworld, burning alive anyone she can find, and forcibly recruiting the survivors. Intending to either kill or frame Jaune Arc to inflame racial tensions in Vale, Cinder has him shot at the Vytal Festival, instigating a riot; kills his prisoner transport while leaving White Fang symbols behind, causing several more riots in the streets; detonates bombs on the Amity Colleseum, threatening thousands of lives; and sets a trap for Sienna Khan that would force Jaune to watch her die. After killing the Fall Maiden, Cinder then gets enraged by Jaune's survival and promises to exterminate the entire Faunus race, all because Jaune once accidentally called her a stripper.

BTW, with me now being able to pothole Malty and Iwatani in Malty's entry, here's a re-potholed King:

  • The King of Faubley is a grotesque pig of a man who abuses his position to gain new "playthings". Threatening other countries to send him women, the King is a Serial Rapist who takes brides to rape and torture them to death, a fate so horrible that many prospective brides opt for suicide if possible. Upon receiving the women, the King proceeds to "play" with them and have them healed to continue the fun, having 9,999 brides that he has raped and murdered. When the evil Princess Malty Melromarc is sent to him, the hero cannot even watch the horrific recording of what the King does to her, despite Naofumi's hatred of Malty.

Here's the entire tree.

  • The Rising Of The Shield Hero:
    • Web Novel only:
      • Medea Pideth Machina is a sadistic goddess and the ultimate manipulator behind all of the villains in the story. Desiring ultimate power above all, Medea begins destroying 8 worlds to harness the energy of their inhabitants, all while using physical copies of herself to sow the seeds of distrust and chaos throughout the 8 worlds, simply because she enjoys hurting innocents. To compose herself an army, Medea revives and brainwashes the corpses of those killed through her machinations, with the psychopathic Tact being just one of her servants; Medea also has no care for this army, slaughtering them all when they fail her solely to hear them scream. In the end, Medea reveals her plans to extinguish all life in the universe one world at a time simply to boost her power level, before flying into a rage when beaten and simply trying to take down millions with her as she dies. A self-proclaimed sadist who committed her crimes for nothing but more power and always with glee, Medea was the root of every single evil in the story, something she proudly boasted of at every turn.
    • Raphtalia's former owner, named Idol Rabier in the anime, is a sadistic bigot towards demi-humans. After the first Wave of Calamity, he has a village of surviving demi-humans attacked, slaughtering the adults and enslaving the children. Rabier regularly tortured his slaves, causing several of them to die from his treatment of them. Seeking to kill the wanted Naofumi to look like a hero, Rabier tortures Van Reichnott to try and find Naofumi's location, and attempts to do the same to Princess Melty afterwards. Upon being cornered by Raphtalia, Rabier begs for his life to be spared; when Raphtalia grants this request in the anime, Rabier tries to kill her anyway. With the last of his strength, Rabier releases a monster sealed within the town and orders it to destroy everything in sight, willing to put countless lives at risk all to gain glory by killing Naofumi.
    • Light Novel only: Malty S.

What is the work?

Fortress and Fortress 2: Re-Entry is a duology of dystopian sci-fi films starrring Christopher Lambert as John Brennick, who is imprisoned for "crimes against the state" in a Hellhole Prison owned by the evil Men-Tel Corporation. They're enjoyable for what they are, although the second suffers some Sequelitis with an astounding lack of gore and likable characters.

In the former, Brennick and his wife Karen are arrested for violating the one-child policy and trying to flee into Mexico. They are both sentenced to the "Fortress", a prison built deep in a desert complex where prisoners mine for ore, there is No OSHA Compliance whatsoever, prisoners are killed or tortured for the smallest infractions (even thoughtcrimes such as erotic dreams are verboten), and rape is apparently rampant. The prisoners are also implanted with what amounts to an Explosive Leash to control their movements. Better color in the designated lines, or your torso will be blown open. That's not even getting into what happens to the female prisoners, who are reduced to Breeding Slaves to create a new generation of hybrid humans so that Men-Tel can better control them. Warden Poe, played with delightful smugness by Kurtwood Smith, appears to take joy in crushing Brennick's spirit, but ultimately is revealed to be a pawn of ZED, the Men-Tel Artificial Intelligence computer system, which destroys him when he "outlives his usefulness" for refusing to harm Karen.

Which brings us to the candidate, who only appears in the second film.

Who is Warden Teller? What has he done?

Ten years after escaping the Fortress, Brennick is hiding in the woods of Canada with Karen and his young son Danny. Brennick is clearly working with the resistance, meeting with several key figures to plan their next move. However, they've been found, and although Karen and Danny manage to escape, Brennick is captured. He awakens to find himself on a new prison, Fortress 2, which is soon revealed to be in orbit around the Earth when an unruly prisoner is executed by being spaced. Brennick, the only man who ever escaped one of Men-Tel's prisons is taken aside by the Warden of this facility, Peter Teller. He explains that he ordered Brennick's capture in Canada, sending a black ops team across the border for that purpose. See, ten years ago Teller was the Director of Prison Facilities for the entire Men-Tel Corporation, making him Warden Poe's boss in hindsight. He was demoted as a result of Brennick's escape, and he wants payback. He also promises Brennick that as soon as he captures his wife and son he will send them to the same prison, showing him satellite footage of the pair journeying through the woods.

Brennick and the other prisoners are again subjected to numerous hazards, with Brennick and a few others ordered to repair some solar polars on the satellite's exterior. An asteroid storm soon hits them, killing one prisoner who couldn't make it back in time. We're treated to the usual rigamarole as Brennick probes the system for weaknesses, first attempting to stow away in a cargo crate and hitch a ride back home with a supply shuttle. Brennick is immediately captured, and sentenced to "The Hole": a small cell on the sattelite's edge with a huge window exposing him to the sun's unshielded heat and radiation, then the freezing cold as the prison faces away from it. Teller even forgets about Brennick, having to be reminded by ZED that he already outlived most prisoners by 7 hours, so Teller lets him go. Teller makes several more attempts to kill Brennick, such as getting him in a room with another prisoner wielding a blowtorch who already got into a fight with him before. A guard who owes Brennick a favor nearly gets killed in the crossfire, but Teller just makes up a story that the cameras were malfunctioning.

It's eventually revealed that Teller has been working to turn Fortress 2 into a Kill Sat, betraying his own bosses in the process (Teller has this spiteful relationship with his boss and stepmother that really isn't worth getting into). Also revealing that one of the resistance members Brennick was working with was a mole all along, he uses the Kill Sat to blow up a group of Russian prisoners who tried to escape on a spaceship, then orders Brennick to be spaced and his two remaining allies confined to The Hole. Because Brennick is an immortal highlander (just kidding) he floats towards another entry tube and repressurizes the airlock with no lasting injuries. Brennick deliberately destroys a section of the ship so ZED cannot fix it herself (okay, it's a computer, but she uses a woman's voice). This gives Brennick time to hijack the Kill Sat launch protocols as Teller and his remaining officers attempt to manually seal off the damaged section, and target the solar panels, destroying the ship with Teller on it. Brennick is offered a pardon by Teller's boss in exchange for rescuing her.

Heinousness?

Worst in both movies. Teller is retroactively made into the Greater-Scope Villain for the first film, which means he bears responsibility for the insanity in the first Fortress as well. And given the way that he runs this second prison, there's no way no how he's not in the loop on Warden Poe's conduct. Teller himself is a nasty piece of work, frequently telling ZED to forgo the usual Restraining Bolt on the prisoners because violence is enjoyable "on occasion". And no, the prisoners aren't just of the Asshole Victim persuasion. The first film demonstrates pretty clearly that people get sentenced for crimes ranging from homicide, to bouncing checks, to trying to have a child with your wife after your first was stillborn. All Crimes Are Equal is the norm here. That aside, he also tries to have a guard killed. Plus, conspiring to send a child to this place is a low that not even Warden Poe stooped to. The youngest prisoner in the first film seemed to be 18 or so.

Mitigating factors?

Well, there's no agency issues here. ZED isn't in control of this prison. Teller is, and he isn't in any way a cyborg or a Tragic Villain. He's a fully organic man and apparently, the son of Men-Tel's CEO.

There is an interesting moment where he's perusing the profile of Brennick's wife with his chief guard Sato standing beside him. Sato himself goes out of his way to treat the prisoners as badly as possible as well, but when he mentions that he'd like to "get a piece of that", Teller reacts with an annoyed shrug, saying it's hard to find decent personel. It would take a leap to qualify this as an Even Evil Has Standards moment though. Brennick stops an Attempted Rape in the first film, and in the second film the group of Russians try to force him to "borrow" them one of his female friends. Oh, did I mention that Teller and his men can see through the prisoners' optic nerves? They know what's going on.

Aside from that the man grows his own strawberries. What's not to like?

Conclusions?

Teller hits all our standards. Film is dreck, but eh.

Yes to Teller.

Look, this candidate almost has my name on it.

What is the Work?

Captain America is a long-running Superhero Story about one of the most iconic patriotic superheroes.

In the "Home of the Brave" & "Out of Time (2017)" Arcs, Rampart, a racist militia led by Maximillian Babbington, nukes the USA into near-oblivion before ruling over the ruins.

Who is King Maximillian Babbington, and what has he done?

Babbington starts out as the leader of the White-Supremacist group Rampart, having previously had his men take a police station containing several children hostage.

After Captain America prevents Rampart from hijacking a festival, Babbington lures Cap into a trap before using hundreds of nuclear warheads to decimate the USA to 10% of its former population—with many survivors being disfigured—and encasing Cap in ice to put him on display.

In 2025, when Cap is awakened by resistance members, the USA has become a fascist regime, where allegedly inferior people are branded as such. People are killed for so much as gathering together.

When confronted by Cap and the rebels, Babbington tries to put Cap under his thrall, only for Cap to neutralize him and have him imprisoned while Cap and his allies attempt to rebuild.

After New York is bombed for a second time in the wake of Babbington's overthrowing, Cap goes back in time to prevent the first nukes from being fired in the first place. Babbington tries to have Cap frozen again upon realizing that there is an unfrozen Cap, only for Cap to destroy the sub and the nukes, sacrificing himself, while his previously frozen self survives.

Mitigating Factors?

Babbington is a racist and power-hungry elitist who cares only about his personal gain and his racist viewpoint.

There is no indication whatsoever that his decision to tell Cap and his allies where his first strike was is at all motivated by altruism. In fact, it seems more like an attempt at self preservation.

Heinousness?

Within the comics, we have Nazis who use cosmic cubes and death rays, Nazi scientists who perform hideous experiments, and a Feminazi who tries to sterilize people.

However, for all the Nazi (and other) atrocities in the comics, it doesn't appear that anyone else nukes an entire country into near-oblivion and reigns with an iron fist over the ruins.

Verdict?

Solid Contender.
